Steven Spielberg Claims IMAX Best Way To Experience Josh O’Connor’s Soulful Yet Vulnerable Eyes
NEW YORK—Urging audiences to see his new film on the biggest screen possible, Disclosure Day director Steven Spielberg claimed in an interview Friday that IMAX provided the best way to experience Josh O’Connor’s soulful yet vulnerable eyes. “In order for you to feel swept away in those deep emerald pools the way I intended, you really have to see it in IMAX,” said Spielberg, revealing that he had shot the film with high-resolution IMAX cameras specifically to capture every detail of O’Connor’s simmering gaze. “As an artist, I can’t control how people view my art, but I really designed this film to be an immersive experience where the audience can just let go and be transported by Josh O’Connor’s warm, pensive glances. On a standard screen, you’re missing at least 50% of the subtle shifts between blue and green his breathtaking irises take on.” Spielberg added that the IMAX format was also the only one large enough to fit Josh O’Connor’s ears. Water-gate: Fifa’s lucrative World Cup breaks are ruining the spectacle
This hydration break is powered by Powerade,” roared Fox Sports commentator Ian Darke, as the first game of the World Cup stopped after 24 minutes so players could take on water. The temperature in Mexico City was 23C, constituting a relatively mild day in the Mexican summer. But if we’ve learnt one thing over the past few weeks, it’s that this is not a tournament to miss out on a fast buck.Fox Sports, of course, used the three-minute break to show lucrative advertising. Powerade is Fifa’s official sports drink, and once it had its moment on screen, Fox cut to adverts for AT&T (telecoms), Michelob Ultra (light beer), Lowe’s (home improvements) and FanDuel (sports betting). When the break ended, it cut back to find the players preparing to restart. Why anyone needs three minutes to glug some water has not been explained. Mexico’s head coach Javier Aguirre talks with his players during the hydration break (AFP/Getty)At which point, the momentum of a high-paced, entertaining first game was killed. Inside the stadium, the roars that greeted the Mexican anthem and their team’s opening goal were replaced by music. The stands began to empty as fans left their seats, presumably to get their own food and drink, while “dance cam” took over the big screens. There will be games when water breaks are necessary during this World Cup. But Fifa’s decision to blanket all 104 fixtures with mandatory hydration breaks is an extraordinary, unprecedented step. The governing body claims the stoppages will “ensure the best possible conditions for players”. A more cynical explanation is that Fifa’s broadcasters stand to increase their bounty from a World Cup that is already being squeezed for every penny it’s worth. “I don’t like it,” said US coach Mauricio Pochettino, when asked about the prospect of water breaks during America’s first game against Paraguay on Friday. “I only like it when the conditions are extreme. But when the conditions are good, it is unnecessary.”“I hate it,” tweeted Carli Lloyd, the great US women’s player. What was all the more jarring was that this bizarre moment took place inside the historic Estadio Azteca, a footballing cathedral, on the game’s most hallowed turf. It is the place where Pele won the 1970 World Cup, where his perfect pass to Carlos Alberto drew a line across the pitch. It is the place where Diego Maradona conjured the greatest goal ever scored at a World Cup, where the “hand of God” broke dreams. Mexico beat South Africa in the opening game of the World Cup (AP)Standing on the touchline before kick-off for ITV Sport (which did not show ads due to Ofcom restrictions), Ally McCoist was almost moved to tears to be so close to football history. And yet it was ironic that the ground has been renamed for this World Cup as the bland, lifeless “Mexico City Stadium” to adhere to Fifa naming conventions. Given this tournament’s lust for money, it’s a surprise the Azteca wasn’t renamed after one of Fifa’s partners: The Coca-Cola Stadium. The Hyundai-Kia Arena. The Marriott Bonvoy Thunderdome. Fifa, it should be pointed out, had already bowed to Fox Sports long before this tournament began. Fox wanted to sue Fifa for moving the Qatar World Cup from summer to winter. To avoid an ugly and potentially costly legal fight, Fifa agreed to sign off the rights to the 2026 World Cup in a cut-price deal that saw Fox Sports take the entire tournament for $500m, back in 2015. Fox struck lucky, then, when the tournament turned out to be on home turf in North America, and then expanded to 48 teams and a record 104 games. The broadcast rights are estimated to be worth $1.5bn, and Fox took them for a third of that price. So Fifa’s decision to split every game into quarters offers more reasons for Fox to cheer. There could be 208 in-game ad breaks, and Michael Johnson, a research analyst covering the US sports industry for S&P Global, said each advertising slot “could potentially command those Super Bowl-level prices within that seven to probably $9m range”. If water breaks are retained for the 2030 World Cup, which will be staged in the Mediterranean heat of Morocco, Spain and Portugal, competition among broadcasters and streaming giants will be fiercely lucrative for Fifa. The entire format of the oldest, most popular sport in the world has essentially been transformed overnight, on its greatest stage. The breaks are being used by coaches as tactical timeouts, and both managers could be seen dishing out instructions on the touchline while their players refuelled. US fans might not grumble, given they are used to similar formats in American sports, but they are being deprived of what makes football a spectacle, namely its pace of play.Is any of this necessary? Fifa president Gianni Infantino has hailed the financial might of this World Cup, with revenues set to exceed £10bn for the first time. Is there any need to push for more, and more, and more? Water breaks come at a cost to the game. But as ever, Fifa only answers to the god Mammon.

Real Madrid star looking forward to life under Jose Mourinho
Real Madrid star looking forward to life under Jose MourinhoThe 2025-26 season was another forgettable one for Real Madrid, not only because they were unable to add any more trophies to their cabinet, but also because of the constant turbulence the team faced with all the managerial changes and the media spotlight on the team. Some players from the Merengue team would still have the chance to salvage something from this year, particularly the ones who would be representing their respective national teams in the World Cup. Meanwhile, the pain of other players who also missed out on the World Cup because of the last season would be even greater. One such player who falls in this category is the defender Eder Militao, who saw his chances of making it to the World Cup crumble when he suffered his latest serious injury in April. As MARCA has reported, the Brazilian center-back appeared in an interview with SportyNet and talked about his injury, missing the World Cup, and Mourinho’s arrival.Talking about the international competition, the defender opened up on how difficult it was to miss out on it, but had still made his peace with the situation:“It’s tough, yes. Raphinha, Endrick, Bruno Guimarães… they all messaged me to ask how I was doing. Of course we wanted to be there; we worked for it, but I’m supporting them one hundred percent.”“Missing the World Cup is very painful, but you also have to think about your career. I could have gotten injured even while being with the national team. I accepted it and leaned heavily on my family.”“It’s sad to see yourself left out of the squad, but I’ve also become just another fan. I support the team as much as possible, watch the matches, and try to send positive energy.”Militao also talked about his injury and how it has changed him as a player:“It happened when I was going to finish off a cross. As I turned to shoot, I felt something strange. At first it didn’t seem serious. I walked to the dressing room, they ran tests, and nothing conclusive showed up. Then the diagnosis came.Obviously, having so many injuries affects you psychologically, but it also gives you experience. Before, I was a very explosive player; now I’m more mature and don’t rely as much on speed.”The center-back spoke highly of the former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is currently in charge of the Brazilian national team:“He is still the same person — a great coach and a great father figure. Training sessions are demanding, and he is always looking for ways to improve. Madrid and Brazil are similar. Both are the best at what they do. The pressure is high, but it’s healthy pressure. It’s the price of being at the biggest teams.”Meanwhile, he also praised Jose Mourinho and was looking forward to start training with him:“He is a great coach. I’m looking forward to next season. In personal life, there are ups and downs. The important thing is to be mentally well. If your mind is in a good place and your family is doing well, everything flows much better.”It is really sorry seeing a defender as capable as Eder Militao constantly being hounded by injuries. One can only hope that he would get over these physical problems as soon as possible, and return to availability for Real Madrid, where he would be playing in a significantly changed backline from the last season.

How much Juventus have to pay after parting company with CEO Comolli
How much Juventus have to pay after parting company with CEO ComolliJuventus have officially parted ways with CEO Damien Comolli, who has left his position at the top of the club’s hierarchy by mutual consent, but the Bianconeri are still obliged to hand over a significant severance package to their former director. How much do Juventus have to pay Comolli in severance?Comolli joined Juventus one year ago, initially as the club’s general manager before being promoted to the title of CEO in November.Reports indicate that tensions have been brewing between Comolli and head coach Luciano Spalletti, who joined the club less than a fortnight before Comolili was promoted to his role as CEO.Though Comolli handed Spalletti a new contract extension back in April, there have reportedly been disagreements over transfer decisions and suggestions that a failed pursuit of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was the final nail in the coffin for the Juve executive.Juventus have already confirmed that Giovanni Carnevali has taken over as the club’s new CEO.SASSUOLO, ITALY – DECEMBER 06: Giovanni Carnevali, US Sassuolo Calcio CEO, looks on prior to the Serie A match between US Sassuolo Calcio and ACF Fiorentina at Mapei Stadium Citta del Tricolore on December 06, 2025 in Sassuolo, Italy. Trump’s biggest & worst lies aren’t about the “rigged” 2020 election
In his June 9 interview with Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet the Press, Donald Trump returned again to his loathsome “Big Lie” that he won the 2020 presidential election due to massive fraud in the states that declared Biden as the winner. Ever since November 3, 2020, Trump has sung this Faustian leitmotif far off-key as a constant refrain to excite and re-energize his sycophantic base and to protect his certifiable, fragile narcissist ego from total collapse. Related Donald Trump’s contempt for female journalists is indicative of a much larger problem Fraudulent elections are, according to political scientist Lawrence Britt, one of the 14 enumerated characteristics of fascism: 1. Powerful and continuing nationalism, Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today 2. Disdain for the recognition of human rights, 3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats [of the country’s problems] as a unifying cause, 4. Rampant sexism, 5. Supremacy of the military, 6. Controlled mass media, 7. Obsession with national security, 8. Religion and government are intertwined, 9. Corporate power is protected, 10. Labor power is suppressed, 11. Disdain for intellectuals and the arts, 12. Obsession with crime and punishment, 13. Rampant cronyism and corruption, and 14. Fraudulent elections Trump checks the boxes in Britt’s characteristics, but of the last one, not only did he pressure election officials in various states to give him unearned votes (like in Georgia), but he also pressured his first-term Vice President Mike Pence not to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. Trump not only attempted to illegally fix the election in his favor, but he also reprises his perpetual “Big Lie” whenever his endorsed primary and election candidates face defeat. Though Trump’s “Big Lie” accused the Democratic Party of “rigging” the 2020 election, all his lies have been big and dangerous, with possibly the biggest being his promise to “Make America Great Again.” On Meet the Press, Welker asked Trump about his so-called “weaponization fund” from which he intends to give large amounts of money to supporters whom he has deemed as having been unfairly treated by Biden’s Department of Justice, namely, those arrested on insurrection charges for storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021. “They had FBI agents ushering them into the building,” argued Trump on Face the Nation. “They had FBI go into the building. Those people are walking around, they’re looking, ‘Oh, isn’t this nice?’ They weren’t in—they were being ushered into the building. The people were destroyed by dirty cops and by weaponization. Many of those people should be compensated.” Welker replied, “All right, this is, just to be very clear, there’s no evidence of what you’re saying…” Trump responded, “There’s a lot of evidence….There’s tremendous evidence. There’s nothing but evidence.” Welker said, “Well, it’s not been presented in a court of law.” Trump then said, “The election [of 2020] was rigged. It was a dirty election.” He went on to accuse Democrats of stealing the recent Los Angeles mayoral election primary away from his endorsed candidate, Republican reality TV personality Spencer Pratt. After some give-and-take on the California primary, Trump returned to his standard attack of demeaning women journalists of color by accusing Welker. He said, “They’re crooked just like you’re crooked, your press is crooked. And Meet the Press is crooked.” Welker replied, “To be fair, I’m not crooked. But let’s continue.” Trump then said, “You’re either crooked or you’re stupid.” Following his insults, Trump stormed off the stage and out of the NBC studios. Trump seemed to get his “Big Lie” methods from other of his admired autocrats. Adolph Hitler infamously said, “The great masses of the people will more easily fall victim to a Big Lie than to a small one,” and, “The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.” Trump (encapsulated in his alt-right, alt-facts, alt-universe), like other authoritarians, uses “Machiavellian” tactics in his single-mindedness, cunning, plotting, and unscrupulous — often vicious — actions to advance his career, enact his policies, and enhance his power. To Trump, the ends certainly justify the means, no matter who gets hurt. Throughout his business career and into his presidency, Trump has simultaneously vilified the courts while using lawsuits as a means of intimidation to get his way and to vanquish his opposition. He continually threatens to employ libel laws to sue the “crooked and lying” media. We will most likely see more of these threats emerging from Trump’s Ministry of Propaganda (a.k.a. “White House Office of Communications”). The major wealthier media outlets have the privilege and ability to stand up to Trump’s coercion, though some choose not to when they are dependent on Trump and his administration to grant them mergers or buyouts of other media companies. Some of the smaller organizations who run on very tight budgets and depend on volunteer labor have no such privileges. For many of these smaller outlets, even the threat of a harassing lawsuit will result in their self-censoring. The problem is that the Big Lie is now so embedded within the far-right-facing MAGA insignia that it represents a call to action, a call to take the country back to an uncontested white Christian nativist nation, the U.S. equivalent of a Nazi-era Aryan race where non-Aryans must either be “put in their place,” expelled, or terminated. The outcome of Trump’s lies have resulted in over a million people dead from a pandemic, widespread economic collapse, increasing wage and health inequalities between the super rich and everyone else, and insurrectionists attempting to hold the government and our democratic institutions hostage. And for what? For a narcissistic sociopath to gain and hold onto power through appealing to white grievance politics. The post-Trump Senate impeachment trial in 2021 brought no degree of justice since the perpetrator has now returned to the scene of the crime (the Oval Office) with more power than ever. As his public ratings have plummeted to new depths, it seems perfectly clear that his fellow colluders and actors in perpetuating the Big Lie will suffer consequences come November. I’ve been struck time and time again by Trump’s lies and deceptions throughout the past post-factual nine years since he first announced his campaign for the presidency. Most of us have read by now that The Washington Post recorded 30,573 “untruths” during his first term (averaging approximately 21 invalid claims a day). The most egregious claim, which had deadly consequences, was the “Big Lie”, which resulted in his staunchest supporters launching an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Trump’s second term is no different for this Misstater-(Liar)-in-Chief. As the lies continue piling up, as his attempts to grab more power and wealth through grifting soars, he again has attempted to redraw maps and redefine the very definition of “winning.” President Donald Trump, as the clinically compulsive liar that he is, shouted yet another of his big lies that he and Netanyahu decided to go to war with Iran because it served our country’s self-interest due to the “imminent threat” Iran posed to the United States and to the world community. But there was no imminent threat. Trump lied that Iran was very close to producing a nuclear weapon. That is not true. And now, Trump is literally asleep at the wheel (or at least at his desk in the Oval Office). Enormous problems endanger our nation and the world: wars, inflation, unaffordable healthcare and childcare costs, ever-rising energy prices, a global climate crisis, poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, starvation, spreading diseases, destructive animal parasites, democratic instability at home and abroad, gun violence, and so many others. Instead of tackling these problems head-on as a president of the United States must, Donald Trump has been fixated instead on his vanity projects of constructing an expensive and unnecessary White House ballroom, refurbishing the Reflection Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, covering the roads between the Lincoln Memorial and the Potomac River, erecting the tallest victory arch (the Arch de Trump) near Arlington National Cemetery to overcompensate for Trump’s failed manhood, and other tacky and completely illegal extravagances. How long will it take for Trump’s supporters to finally realize they have been duped by this con-artist who sold them his snake-oil-of-a-campaign-and-presidency of little value, which has had disastrous consequences? How much longer can Trump’s enablers, both his passive and active supporters, understand that they are hurting the country and sacrificing their own integrity and sense of dignity for the mere promise of a few shiny coins of glittering gold and the hot glow of fleeting power? When voters relinquish their freedom for some sort of promised security, we are left with nothing at all. Depressed Shams Charania Breaks Scoop That He Has No One
CHICAGO—Having confirmed the shocking development with numerous top-level sources, a depressed Shams Charania broke the news Thursday that he has absolutely no one. “Per multiple industry insiders, I can confirm that I’ve driven away everyone who ever cared about me in this world, and now I’m all alone with my miserable self,” the dejected, unshaven NBA reporter and insider wrote in a post on X published at 1:17 a.m., adding that while rumors at the beginning of the season had briefly linked him to several casual friendships, those talks ultimately collapsed and left him to languish on the open market despite his having signaled openness to terms on virtually any acquaintanceship structure, even a low-risk, one-year commitment with a mutual opt-out. “You give everything you have to this business, and for what? It all turns to shit in the end, just pure shit. And now I’m hearing rumblings that, well, I’m a complete piece of shit myself. According to sources, my colleagues hate me, everyone I know hates me, and I fucking hate myself. More as the situation develops.” At press time, Charania was said to be further demoralized upon learning that his big scoop had been extensively reported on by Chris Haynes three days prior. Olive Garden Unveils New ‘We Invented Spaghetti’ Slogan
ORLANDO, FL—In an effort to attract first-time clientele and bring back old fans, Italian American restaurant chain Olive Garden unveiled its new “We Invented Spaghetti” slogan Friday during a call with investors. “We want Americans to know that when you’re at Olive Garden, you’re not just getting a delicious meal at an unbeatable price, you’re also stepping foot into a little bit of history and seeing where the most popular pasta type in the world originated,” company president John Wilkerson said of the slogan, which will reportedly be rolled out alongside a $35 million television ad campaign that features smiling patrons digging into steaming plates of the long cylindrical pasta while a voiceover intones: “Spaghetti—Olive Garden came up with it. You just get to enjoy it.” “The story goes that late one night, many years ago, our co-founder Mark Given needed something to soak up all the tomato sauce and meatballs his cooks were making. He figured a long, thin pasta type would be just the thing. So, yeah, that’s how spaghetti was born. Many have also asked why our Bolognese is so authentic, and the truth is we thought that up ourselves, too, way back in 1983. The secret to the delicious sauce is a generous amount of corn syrup.” In tandem with the new slogan, Olive Garden announced its intention to initiate a lawsuit against Barilla, De Cecco, and San Giorgio for unauthorized infringement of its intellectual property. EPA Approves Use Of Napalm As Pesticide
WASHINGTON—Saying they saw no reason to limit any potential agricultural use of the flammable combination of gelling agents and gasoline, officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved napalm as a pesticide Friday. “Following a thorough review, the EPA has found that napalm, with its ability to burn at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, is highly effective for both weed management and pest control,” said Administrator Lee Zeldin, who sought to assure the public that the highly incendiary liquid, which removes unwanted insects, fungus, rodents, raccoons, and deer with the press of a flamethrower trigger, posed no threat to human health whatsoever. “The evidence shows commercial farms lose far fewer crops to pests once all wildlife in the area has been thoroughly fire-bombed. We also urge napalm’s widespread adoption in small backyard gardens, where slugs and snails can be easily engulfed in a ball of flame.” The move follows a statement from the EPA last month encouraging farmers to control rabbit populations by lining the perimeter of their fields with land mines. Study: Crying Not Linked To What You Said But The Way You Said It
BLOOMINGTON, IN—Scientists may be one step closer to answering the question of whether you are ineloquent or just an asshole after participants in a study of your communication skills confirmed Friday that their crying was not linked to what you said, but to the way you said it. “The words themselves aren’t mean, but your harsh tone makes us feel like you think we’re stupid,” said visibly distressed sources, adding that they would never even consider talking to you like that. “There is so much judgment in your voice when you say stuff like, ‘Oh, you actually went to the gym today,’ or when you ask if we’re gonna change clothes before going out. And sometimes you add a little laugh like it’s a joke but it’s not a joke. It’s embarrassing to cry over trivial bullshit, but can you please just, like, try to be kinder?” Following the study’s conclusion, participants announced their intention to examine whether you talk to your boss like this or just the people you claim to love. Former NFL Pro Bowler drops true bomb on why Knicks fan should respect Victor Wembanyama instead of throwing eggs
Former NFL Pro Bowler drops true bomb on why Knicks fan should respect Victor Wembanyama instead of throwing eggs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. After the New York Knicks pulled off a remarkable comeback win over Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, the Spurs superstar reportedly encountered a hostile reception outside the team's hotel in Manhattan. According to Shams Charania, several eggs were thrown toward Wembanyama as the Spurs walked back to their hotel across from Madison Square Garden following the game. One egg seemed to splatter on a street sign inches from Wembanyama’s head, and he was seen checking his clothing for residue. No arrests were reported in connection with the incident, but the incident sparked reactions across the sports world, including from former NFL Pro Bowler T.J. Houshmandzadeh.“If Wemby turns around and smacks the sh*t outta one of them, it'd be a problem,” Houshmandzadeh said. “Because as soon as he smacked the sh*t out of somebody, they're gonna they're gonna be ready to sue. There's a lot of dudes that if you hit them with an egg they turn around and they're gonna put hands and feet on you.“At the end of the day, it's a basketball game. It's a game where you throw eggs at Wimby. They helped y'all win. What are y'all mad at him for? Y'all should be happy. Y'all should be sending him gifts. He helped y'all win. At some point now when they go back to New York, they need to make sure the fans can't even line up at the hotel. They gotta eliminate all that because something can happen.”Even longtime Knicks supporter Stephen A. Smith condemned the behavior, labeling the fans responsible as "punks" and saying they should face arrest for throwing an egg at Wembanyama. The confrontation came shortly after one of the Spurs’ most devastating defeats of the season. They dominated early, racing to a 41-22 advantage after the opening quarter and carrying a 27-point lead into halftime after scoring 76 points in the first two quarters. However, the momentum completely shifted after the break. The Spurs managed only 30 points in the second half, which ultimately opened the door for the Knicks to erase the massive deficit and complete one of the most memorable comeback victories in NBA Finals history.More NBA news:5x NBA All-Star says Spurs failed Victor Wembanyama in historic collapse vs. KnicksVictor Wembanyama finds himself at center of ugly postgame sceneMitch Johnson’s blunt Victor Wembanyama take proves why Knicks had no answer in Game 3NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal shares savage honesty about Victor Wembanyama-Jalen Brunson incident that Knicks fans won't likeGregg Popovich had one message for Victor Wembanyama, Spurs before pivotal NBA Finals game

Brendan Sorsby mess makes Reggie Bush story look like peanuts
The Brendan Sorsby controversy which swallowed this week in college football has been so explosive because its reach into the recent history of the sport is so pervasive. Rick Neuheisel was punished for participating in an NCAA Tournament pool. Other athletes have been banned for betting very small sums of money, far less than what Sorsby did. USC's Reggie Bush didn't commit anything close to the ethical violation Sorsby did. Yet, the hammer came down hard on the Trojans. Texas Tech, in contrast, is escaping real punishment.College football journalist Chris Low tweeted, "Remember when Reggie Bush once had to forfeit the Heisman Trophy for accepting improper benefits from agents (a rent-free home) and USC had to vacate a national title?"The more time passes, the more absurd the severity of those USC punishments looks. So much has happened since then which has put the NCAA's witch hunt against the Trojans in perspective.Jerry Sandusky at Penn State. Art Briles at Baylor. Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. Now this with Brendan Sorsby. The Reggie Bush story isn't in the same league as those figures and the scandals they were involved in.We can all appreciate, with the passage of time, just how unfair the NCAA and Paul Dee actually were. Some things age well. Others don't. We can all see that the NCAA's punishments of USC and Reggie Bush have not aged well at all. This article originally appeared on Trojans Wire: Brendan Sorsby scandal makes USC, Reggie Bush a total nothingburger

Series Preview: Padres open 9-game road swing at up-and-down Orioles
Fernando Tatis Jr. #23 of the San Diego Padres swings the bat against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on June 2, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The sense of relief when Fernando Tatis Jr. lined Chase Petty’s middle-middle slider just over the wall in left for a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Cincinnati Reds was palpable at Petco Park.It not only sealed a much needed series win for the Padres (35-32, 2nd in NL West), their first since May 22-24 against the Athletics that was followed by dropping four straight, but also was the fifth walk off win of the campaign. Three of the previous four times San Diego was able to continue that momentum into the following series and win it, which will be needed as they embark on their second-longest road trip of the season. It begins with a three-game set at Oriole Park at Camden Yards against a Baltimore (33-37, 4th in AL East) side that has bounced back from falling to a season-low eight games below .500 on May 20 by going 12-8 since. The O’s have won three, tied two and dropped one series, and have recorded all three of their walk off wins over that stretch.Fernando A-Go GoFor as much as breaking his home run drought was a major story for Tatis when he crushed his first of the season in game 56 of the campaign, one can point to the first game of the series against the Dodgers on May 18 as the beginning of his turnaround. At that point, he was hitting .232 and had just finished going 1-for-12 with a single and a walk in the Padres series sweep at Seattle.Since then, Tatis has raised his batting average 49 points to .281 for the season and ranks fourth among qualified hitters across the Majors with a .376 average in the past 21 games. His 32 hits are tied for most in the Majors over that stretch with Shohei Ohtani. Also, they more than doubled the next two Brown and Gold batters combined (Jackson Merrill at 15, Ty France with 13), and Tatis scored a team-high nine runs. Another encouraging number is that his strikeout percentage has been 14.0%, after over the first 45 games of the season it was 24.4%.Orioles on an UpswingBaltimore has been up-and-down for most of the season, never winning more than three games in a row (they’ve done that four times) while also losing three or more games consecutively five times. The O’s have won their last two, splitting their four-game set hosting the Seattle Mariners by notching wins of 7-2 on Wednesday and 7-5 on Thursday — those stopped a four-game losing spell.Offense has been their calling card, ranking seventh in the Majors and second in the AL with 331 runs. Off-season acquisition Pete Alonzo has continued to provide pop with a team-leading 15 home runs and 44 RBI, while Adley Rutschman ranks second with 39 driven in and Gunnar Henderson has swatted 13 over the fence.Third-year third baseman Blaze Alexander has made the most of his change of scenery since arriving from the Arizona Diamondbacks via trade, leading the team with a .285 average. Over the last 20 games his average has been .391 and his 13 RBI are tied with Rutschman for third behind Colton Cowser (14 of his 23 RBI for the season) and Alonzo (16 RBI).Pitching Match-upsFriday, June 12: RHP Griffin Canning (0-4, 6.34 ERA) vs. RHP Shane Baz (3-6, 4.09 ERA)Since allowing six runs in both his second and third appearances, Canning has dialed it in and allowed three runs of fewer in his last four. His last start was arguably his best, a no-decision against the Mets on June 6 where he allowed one run on three hits in five innings with six strikeouts and a walk. With the most innings pitched (77) amongst O’s starters, Baz has allowed two or fewer earned runs in his last four starts, though his last time out he got tagged for four unearned runs in a 6-4 loss at Toronto on June 7. The knuckle curve is his primary out pitch, which he’s gotten 39 of his 66 strikeouts with this season along with a 29.2% whiff rate overall.Saturday, June 13: RHP Randy Vásquez (5-4, 3.63 ERA) vs. RHP Trey Gibson (1-1, 4.24 ERA)After a fast start to the season, Vásquez has taken three of his losses over his past four starts, during which he’s allowed 13 of his 28 earned runs for the season. He’s pitched at least five innings in 10 of his 13 starts, but two of those “fewer than” outings have also come over his last four.Recalled on June 8, Gibson made his Majors debut earlier on May 3 at the Yankees, and has gone at least 4 2/3 innings in all three of his starts for Baltimore. With Triple A Norfolk, he’s made nine starts with a 3.55 ERA and has a 38/19 strikeouts to walks ratio.Sunday, June 14: RHP Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.33 ERA) vs. LHP Trevor Rogers (3-6, 6.15 ERA)Since allowing 19 earned runs over his first seven starts, Buehler has allowed 11 over his last six and reached the fifth inning in five. His current streak of three starts with two or fewer earned runs allowed is his longest with the PadresRogers had a stretch of seven starts where he allowed four or more runs in six games, but has allowed just one and three runs in his most recent two, and has gotten into or through the sixth inning in his last three starts. He mixes five pitches, and ranks in the 82nd percentile with a 33.8% chase percentage, led by whiff rates of 30.3% on the sweeper and 25.7% on the changeup.

Victor Wembanyama under ‘aura farming’ fire after Spurs’ Game 4 meltdown in NBA Finals
Victor Wembanyama under ‘aura farming’ fire after Spurs’ Game 4 meltdown in NBA Finals originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs find themselves facing elimination after falling behind 3-1 in the NBA Finals series. The young superstar endured a difficult finish in Game 4, missing 10 of his last 12 field-goal attempts and failing to convert two crucial free throws down the stretch.Following San Antonio’s heartbreaking one-point defeat, sports analyst Nick Wright placed much of the blame for the collapse on Wembanyama.“They guy who (was) supposed to be the best player in the world, and in the 2nd half of that game after trash talking and what the kids would call aura farming, and letting everyone know how in their head he was,” Wright said in the latest episode of his podcast.“He went 3 for 14, looked absolutely winded and in a 4th quarter, where Stephon Castle, who’s younger than him went 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Dylan Harper, who’s younger than him, went 2 for 2 from the free throw line, he went 1 for 4 including 2 misses in the final hundred seconds up 1 of a finals game.”However, criticism of Wembanyama may overlook the extraordinary expectations he has carried since being selected first overall in 2023. Through his first three NBA seasons, he has produced historic numbers, averaging 23.4 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.5 blocks per game.Wembanyama still finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds in Game 4. However, the Knicks’ defense tightened after halftime, limiting him to just eight points in the second half as New York completed an incredible comeback.Despite the disappointing loss, there are reasons to believe Wembanyama can respond in Game 5. He recently became the youngest player in NBA history to score more than 500 points in a single postseason.Game 3 also provided a blueprint for success, as Wembanyama dominated with 32 points and 6 assists in that game, proving how difficult he is to defend when the Spurs’ offense creates proper spacing. That performance also proved that the Knicks can struggle to contain his impact when the Spurs execute their game plan effectively.More NBA news:5x NBA All-Star says Spurs failed Victor Wembanyama in historic collapse vs. KnicksVictor Wembanyama finds himself at center of ugly postgame sceneMitch Johnson’s blunt Victor Wembanyama take proves why Knicks had no answer in Game 3NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal shares savage honesty about Victor Wembanyama-Jalen Brunson incident that Knicks fans won't likeGregg Popovich had one message for Victor Wembanyama, Spurs before pivotal NBA Finals game

Olympic and worlds medalist runner Tsegay banned 4 months in season-ending doping case
MONACO (AP) — Two-time world champion runner and Olympic medalist Gudaf Tsegay was banned for four months in a doping case, track and field authorities said Friday, effectively ending her season. The 29-year-old Ethiopian — who once held the indoor world record in the women’s 1,500 meters — had failed to ask in advance to use a medication for a diagnosed health condition, the Athletics Integrity Unit said in a statement.Tsegay tested positive last December for Letrozole, for which she later produced “supporting medical documents and evidence,” the AIU said, acknowledging “she would have received a (therapeutic use exemption) if it had been requested in advance."She is suspended through September, missing all meetings on the global Diamond League circuit and the first Ultimate Championships in Budapest from Sept. 11-13.Tsegay became world champion in the 5,000 meters in 2022 and followed that up by winning the 10,000 at the worlds a year later. She took Olympic bronze in the 5,000 in Tokyo in 2021.At the 2024 Paris Olympics she ran in the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 but did not medal.Letrozole can be used in the treatment of breast cancer for postmenopausal women and also control the effects of steroid use. It was the substance that led to a ban for Italian tennis player Sara Errani in 2017.___AP sports: https://apnews.com/sports

Stanley Cup Final: John Tortorella says Golden Knights will force a Game 7: 'I'm going to leave my clothes here'
The Vegas Golden Knights are leaving North Carolina in an unexpected position: Down 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Final. But Golden Knights coach John Tortorella knows his team will be back. And the only way they can do that, is to win Game 6 and force a Game 7.Tortorella essentially guaranteed that would happen following the team’s 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5. After the contest, Tortorella told reporters he was going to “leave my clothes” in North Carolina, implying that he intends to return to the city for a Game 7. Tortorella also said, “We’ll be back here,” another sign he expects to win Game 6. A Game 7 would be exciting for hockey fans, but new territory for the Golden Knights. The team has yet to face a Game 7 during their playoff run this season, winning their first two series in six games before sweeping the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference finals. During the team’s nine years of existence, it has played in four playoff series that have gone to a Game 7. The Golden Knights are 2-2 in those series. Notably, the team did not play in a single Game 7 during the 2022-23 season, when it won the Stanley Cup. In order for the team to force a Game 7, it would need to win Game 6, of course. The Golden Knights will look to do that Sunday, when the Stanley Cup returns to Vegas one more time.A win would send the Golden Knights back to North Carolina for Game 7, and would allow Tortorella to pick up the clothes he left behind.

Random Ramsdom: Mandatory mini-camp not so mandatory
Woodland Hills, - June 08:Rams head coach Sean McVay at Rams practice on Monday, June 8, 2026. (Photo by David Crane/MediaNews Group/Los Angeles Daily News via Getty Images) g | MediaNews Group via Getty Images Sean McVay canceled his team’s mandatory mini-camp in a move similar to what Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers also recently did. Why did McVay cancel the mini-camp? You can do your own research, but I would think he feels the team got enough work in recently, or because he wants to give the team a break before the NFL season cranks up.It’s interesting and I am not sure how many people will point back to this break whether the Rams are doing well or poorly, but it’s interesting and it’s Rams news so we’re using for today’s Random Ramsdom! It’s Friday, I want to thank everyone for the comments, the input and for checking out this website. We made it to Friday. Be safe and enjoy it!Rams cancel their mandatory minicamp (nbcsports)“Head coach Sean McVay told the team’s players, via multiple reporters, on Thursday that he has canceled the mandatory minicamp that was scheduled for next week. The team was slated to work on Monday and Tuesday before McVay announced the change in plans. While the team will not be holding the minicamp, McVay said that Monday will still be the final day of the program.“Why the 49ers Cancelling Minicamp is the Right Move (si.com)“Just imagine they conducted minicamp as planned, and a few players get dinged up with a hamstring strain. It would derail some of the positive feelings that derived fromOf course, injuries are a part of the game. There is no avoiding it. But I think the fact that the core players on the 49ers are older and have an injury history plays a significant role as well.Last year, the 49ers didn’t cut minicamp because they knew they had a bunch of rookies and young players. They were the priority last offseason, especially coming off a poor 2024 season.“

Gerrard? McInnes? What next for Rangers if Rohl leaves?
[SNS]With players due to report for pre-season training in the next week or so, Rangers could well be looking for a third manager in a year.RB Salzburg are reportedly in talks with Danny Rohl to become their new head coach and, while that guarantees nothing, Rangers fans are already thinking about what next season could look like without the German.Despite Rohl hauling Rangers back into the title race after a torrid start under Russell Martin last season, losing four of their last five games to finish third undermined his authority with many fans.Interest from Germany and now Austria in the 37-year-old has been rumbling for a while, and it might suit both him and Rangers to end their eight-month relationship. If that does come to pass, what comes next at Ibrox?A return for Steven Gerrard? A move for Hearts head coach Derek McInnes? Or a wider search for the person who can revive Rangers?Latest Rangers news, views & analysisIs Shankland finally the striker Scotland have been waiting for?Could Gerrard return to Rangers again?Gerrard said he was "very close" to returning to Ibrox when Martin was sacked last October, before Rohl was appointed instead."There were a few things I was uncertain about," the former Liverpool captain said in November last year. "And if I'm going to take a challenge that big and that important - I've got that affection and connection with Rangers - for me to take that on again it had to be perfect and I had to be 100% ready."One thing Gerrard was said to be "uncertain" about was working under the Rangers hierarchy at the time, including the sporting director Kevin Thelwell. Gerrard has never been explicit about this, but with Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart both dismissed in the wake of a terrible start to last season, the Liverpool legend would be walking into a different club.Rangers have not directly replaced Thelwell, which might suit Gerrard who would likely want a bigger say about recruitment. He also struggled to have the same impact at Aston Villa and Saudi club Al-Ettifaq as he managed at Ibrox, where is he is still lauded by fans for delivering their last title in 2021."I think I suit a certain job; the passionate crowd - I need to try and feed off that," Gerrard told The Smith Brothers' podcast in December."Something has to match my skillset, if you know what I mean. I am looking for the right match. Rangers was perfect, I was really close to going up there again."Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and his consortium's willingness to keep investing in the squad would also be attractive to Gerrard, who grew frustrated at what he felt was a lack of backing towards the end of his first tenure. Will McInnes be considered?Due to his experience and success in Scottish football, and playing history with Rangers, McInnes has often been talked about as a potential manager for the club.He rejected the chance to become manager once before, opting to stay at Aberdeen back in 2017. That was during a time when Rangers were toiling as a club and the Pittodrie side were Celtic's main challengers. But it might be an equally big job for the Ibrox hierarchy to persuade him to leave Hearts nine years on, given his historic first season at Tynecastle. They were minutes away from a first league title since 1960 before succumbing to a late defeat by Celtic, who clinched the Premiership crown. Before Rohl took charge in October, McInnes was asked about the vacancy but was clear he was committed to Hearts, even before their remarkable title tilt went into overdrive."I love it here," he said. "It's been a long time for me coming here. I always thought this was a job that I wanted to be at. I'm working with some good people. "I mentioned a few there, the support from [sporting director] Graeme Jones and the board, but the players have been first class in terms of their efforts day in and day out, and, I think for us, we feel we can be successful here, we really do."McInnes has a strong relationship with Jones, and given the backing from Tony Bloom and his data analytics company it would be hard to walk away from a job.Particularly with Hearts entering Champions League qualifiers next month. What about someone else?Plenty of Rangers fans will think narrowing options to Gerrard or McInnes, known candidates, is self-defeating.There could be lots of options out there who have worked abroad and had success, who Rangers should consider in the event Rohl does leave. While that is undoubtedly true, there is not a long list of so-called 'outsiders' to Rangers coming in and bringing the level of success which is demanded.Dick Advocaat would be one of the few. There is a unique, almost intangible quality which makes a successful Rangers or Celtic manager. An understanding of the demands, the Glasgow dynamics and a certain presence are essential. It is at least part of the reason why both Celtic and Rangers often go back to managers who have either lead the club before or at least played for them.Martin had played for Rangers and did not have those qualities, which shows it certainly does not always work.Rangers may want to find their own Ange Postecoglou or Jens Berthel Askou. But with the club finishing third in their first year of new ownership and on a five-year league title drought, the hierarchy could be forgiven for narrowing their search.Visit our Rangers page for all the latest news, analysis and fan viewsGet Rangers news notifications in the BBC Sport app

When will you know that the Colts are in for a good season?
I think the earliest sign that we may be at minimum competitive, is seeing Daniel Jones play a good quarter of football in the preseason. I’d actually be okay with two good series. But just because it is the earliest sign, will his health be the single most important indicator of a successful season? Besides, I’m talking about how a guy looks in preseason, which doesn’t translate into regular season success. It is probably best to determine just what would constitute a successful season. I put out a poll sometime ago, asking if you would prefer the Colts winning and re-sign Ballard, or are you hoping that the season is bad enough to see him relieved of his duties. 70%ish, said that they preferred the season that was successful enough to retain the GM. I think that sort of season requires a division win and a home playoff victory. So, although feeling good about Jones’ health may be the earliest sign that we could be in the mix, does his success make you feel like we have a good team? Many were skeptical after watching him torch the league for 10 games. Bad competition and a defense that did very little to impose their will on opposition offenses, were the most common factors in this skepticism. Some believe that we were exposed by the Steelers and that we would not be able to sustain our lofty level of offense, when facing the better teams. We all likely have our own measuring stick for our expectations and many have already made their determination as to how the season is going to look. If you have a vision of us being bad, it is likely going to take more for you to see us being good. If your vision is already on the positive side, you may be more apt to seeing just a couple of things go our way. There are some things I will be looking at, but I’d like to know yours as well.I know we have talked about the first five games being much stronger this year, than last year’s. I am going to reduce that down to the first three. A 2 – 1 record against the Ravens, Chiefs and Texan would be a pretty good indicator that the Colts are on track. It may not be the biggest indicator, as no team is who they will eventually be, in the first three weeks of the season, but if we a scoring 30 and keeping the Jackson, Mahomes and Stroud led offenses at arms length, it should eliminate some of the “bad competition” narrative of last year. The double up on this would be a win against a Texans team that has had our number since Ryans’ was hired. We may also be showing that bad starts do not have to be a Colts staple.I also believe that for fans to believe that we are good enough to make some noise, a couple of games where the defense is the driving force of a win would go a long way. Not just a late stop to hold on to a 31 – 30 lead, but a game or two against what appears to be a quality offense, where we make them look rattled. Maybe a nice five sack, four turnover outing? Even a couple of games where we make an offense look one dimensional and not so hot with that dimension, would be a welcomed sight.Another confirmation of seeing the 2026 squad shed some of the baggage of previous years, would be ending the Duvall curse. Week 8, November 1st, sees us travel to Jacksonville to see us try to make Homer Simpson’s workplace billboard read zero. Jacksonville could be the cream of the South this year. They are Jekyll and Hydeish, but Jekyll always is waiting for us and often, it is not close. Should the Colts go in there and end that drought, with even a squeaker, or a Lawrence less effort, we could believe that things might actually be going our way.If none of those options get you fired up enough to place a 100 dollar bill at 25 – 1 (after we have looked good), you will probably point to last year and need to see us at our best in December and January. That is a completely reasonable outlook, because another one of those things we need to see is the anti-wilt. Losing to the Browns late in the year, when a win would secure a playoff spot, would be an indication that nothing has changed. Moving companies might actually reach out to Ballard and Steichen to get a jump on the process. So what is going to get you to the point of believing that the Colts could play in the AFC Championship game or beyond?I’m already there.Going 2 – 1 or better in the first 3 weeks against tough competition.Seeing the defense carry us to a couple of wins.Carrying a good record into week 8 and beating the Jaguars.Playing our best in December and January.Once the current staff has been replaced. No poll, just something to consider and chime in about.

Is Jayson Tatum rooting for the Spurs in the NBA Finals? Celtics star finally reveals
Is Jayson Tatum rooting for the Spurs in the NBA Finals? Celtics star finally reveals originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Knicks moved within one victory of an NBA championship after edging the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 in a dramatic Game 4 at Madison Square Garden. The hard-fought win gave New York a commanding 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals, putting them on the brink of their first title in decades. Meanwhile, the young Spurs squad now faces a difficult challenge as it attempts to keep its championship hopes alive. As the Finals continue to captivate basketball fans, several NBA stars have weighed in on the matchup and shared their thoughts on the series. Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum joined Dan Roberts of Front Office Sports on Thursday, where he also spoke on which team he is rooting in the NBA Finals."I'm not rooting for anybody, I'm also not rooting against anybody,” Tatum said. “I think it does help that I've won a championship already, so (it) helps me sleep a little better at night. L I just enjoy watching good basketball games.”Game 4 was painful for the Spurs because of how dominant the team looked early on. The Spurs entered halftime with the largest halftime lead ever recorded by a road team in NBA Finals history. They also set a new Finals record for the most three-pointers made in a single half, knocking down 14 shots from beyond the arc. However, the Spurs squandered the largest lead ever blown in an NBA Finals game, allowing the Knicks to complete a stunning comeback and steal the victory. Including both NBA Cup and NBA Finals matchups, the two teams have faced each other seven times. The Spurs own a 1-5 record in games where it built a lead of at least 10 points, while it is 1-0 when its largest lead stayed below double digits.Heading into Game 5, much of the pressure will fall on Victor Wembanyama. If the Spurs hope to extend the series and force a Game 6, their franchise star will likely need to deliver a magnificent performance on both ends of the court. The Spurs will also require near-flawless play from De'Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell, whose perimeter scoring and decision-making could be crucial in keeping their season alive.More NBA news:Victor Wembanyama under ‘aura farming’ fire after Spurs’ Game 4 meltdown in NBA FinalsVictor Wembanyama finds himself at center of ugly postgame sceneMitch Johnson’s blunt Victor Wembanyama take proves why Knicks had no answer in Game 3NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal shares savage honesty about Victor Wembanyama-Jalen Brunson incident that Knicks fans won't likeGregg Popovich had one message for Victor Wembanyama, Spurs before pivotal NBA Finals game

Nico Schlotterbeck breaks silence on reported Real Madrid interestReal Madrid are set to begin the 2026-27 season with a significantly changed backline than the one they had for the 2025-26 season. Two members of the last season’s backline, Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, have already said their goodbyes to the Merengue club, while two new signings for this area have already been confirmed, i.e., Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries. However, the summer transfer window is still yet to be opened, and would last for quite a long time, during which more defensive reinforcements might arrive for Jose Mourinho. This is particularly the case as the Portuguese manager wants another player who can play well both as a left-back and a center-back, and Josko Gvardiol and Ricardo Calafiori are currently the favorites for this role.Meanwhile, the Merengues are also keeping a broader list in case they are unable to land either of these two players, and the German center-back Nico Schlotterbeck is present at the top of this list. He recently renewed his contract with Borussia Dortmund, but a clause would allow him to leave for a side outside of the Bundesliga for €50 million.Currently, the defender is in North America, with the German national team, vying for the World Cup. As Diario AS has reported, he was recently asked about this interest from Real Madrid. Schlotterbeck admitted that he is aware of such news, but still ensured that he was fully focused on the World Cup:“Yes, of course you hear about those things through the media, but basically, as I said a few weeks ago, all the focus right now is on the World Cup and on the first match.”Gvardiol and Calafiori are definitely more exciting options, especially as they are still young, and can play both on the flank and in the center of the defense. However, Nico Schlotterbeck would still be a decent alternative if Real Madrid are unable to land either of them.

Giants get interesting trade update on breakout .823 OPS slugger
Giants get interesting trade update on breakout .823 OPS slugger originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The San Francisco Giants are not having the best season whatsoever, though June has gone a lot better than the previous two months so far. But, overall, the way things are trending, it's looking like the Giants are going to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline. In such a scenario, it's going to be fascinating to see who is available and who isn't.With the MLB trade deadline a little under two months away, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand shared an interesting update on .823 OPS Giants breakout infielder/outfielder Casey Schmitt that will make the team's trade deadline plan very interesting.Giants get interesting Casey Schmitt trade update"Schmitt has been the Giants' best payer in 2026, so trading the 27-year-old might not be in the cards for San Francisco," Feinsand writes. "But Schmitt would be an attractive trade candidate for many teams given his versatility in the field, and given his breakout offensive season, the Giants could look to capitalize on his value if they decide to become big sellers."The Giants trading Schmitt would be a very interesting decision, and he's 27 years old, under club control through 2029, and having a breakout season.Normally, trading someone with an .823 OPS who isn't too old and is under control on cheap deals would be a player that teams would avoid trading. But, for the Giants, moving on from Schmitt this season, landing a strong return, and capitalizing on his trade value is something at least worth seriously considering. While yes, Schmitt has been great this season, his career OPS of .667 before this season, and 87 OPS+ is, at the very least, a little concerning.MORE: Cubs’ cost to trade for Tarik Skubal from Tigers revealed by ex-MLB GMIt would not be a total surprise if the 2026 season were a bit of a fluke season for Schmitt, which would make trading him now imperative for the Giants. If San Francisco could get the best bang for their buck by trading Schmitt, a controllable player having a breakout year, it could land a solid prospect or two in exchange for him this summer from a desperate team. While it might sting to trade someone who is finally breaking out, considering the value they could get in return for Schmitt, trading him would make sense.Feinsand tabbed Schmitt as a trade candidate who's raising his value, and when will Schmitt's value be higher than it is now? Buster Posey should seriously entertain a trade of Schmitt, as striking while the iron is hot might be key for this team long-term.More MLB news:5 reasons to believe in Jordan Walker's breakout for CardinalsEx-MLB GM projects White Sox to sell at trade deadline despite 2026 successTarik Skubal being traded by Tigers would help him in free agencyYankees’ Ryan McMahon problem has a $25 million release solution Phillies extending Cristopher Sanchez to his $107 million deal was genius

Broncos' Jonathon Cooper now faces felony charge after domestic violence accusation
Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper, who was arrested last week and charged with a misdemeanor after his girlfriend accused him of domestic violence, is now facing a more serious felony charge.Court records show that Cooper faces a felony charge of second-degree assault, according to 9 News in Denver.Cooper and his girlfriend were both arrested when police were called to an incident in which his girlfriend said he grabbed her by the throat, while he said she took his phone.Broncos coach Sean Payton said yesterday that he has talked to Cooper but hasn't addressed the entire team about the incident. Payton said the league takes the lead on matters like this."I think the league has done a good job of coming in and really taken over that responsibility," Payton said. "We had a long visit with Coop and now the process plays out. The league obviously will be very much involved in that. We'll stay abreast. . . . When it's the offseason or the weekends, no news is always good news. Knock on wood, we've had a long stretch where that's been the case, and now we'll stay as informed as possible. We'll follow the league's guidelines, and I'm sure a lot of that will be led by the local authorities' guidelines. So we'll pay attention to all of it."Cooper could face a suspension under the league's personal conduct policy. If he is suspended, he will lose a game check for each game he misses. That incentivizes Cooper not to do anything to delay the process, as his salary is $67,500 per game this season, but jumps to $721,667 per game next year.

New Zealand great Williamson says 'right time' to retire from international cricket
New Zealand great Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket (MICHAEL BRADLEY)New Zealand's most prolific run-scorer and arguably greatest batsman Kane Williamson announced his immediate retirement from international cricket on Friday in the middle of their series against England. The 35-year-old former skipper called time ahead of the second Test at The Oval next week. He played in the Black Caps' defeat in the first Test at Lord's, making 0 and 18."I've thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it's become clear now is the right time," he said."I've always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I've given it my all in every match I've played for New Zealand."Continuing with anything less wouldn't be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms," added Williamson. The timing of Willamson's announcement, one match into a three-Test series and with a 2026/27 season featuring series against India and Australia to come, was a surprise. But Williamson, speaking later Friday in London, said: "When I look at the dressing room now and I see the talent, and the journey that I think this team's looking to go on, it just feels like the right time for me to step away."I feel really good about it," added Williamson one of the 'Fab Four' batsmen of his generation, alongside India's Virat Kohli, Australia's Steve Smith and England's Joe Root.He made his international debut in 2010 and played 378 games for his country, finishing as New Zealand's all-time leading run-scorer with 19,346 including 48 centuries and six double-centuries.Williamson played 110 Tests, hitting 33 centuries on his way to 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06.His leadership style was much admired and he captained the side in all three formats during a golden period from 2016 to 2024.During that time, New Zealand made two World Cup finals, three semi-finals, and won the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.- 'Legend' -New Zealand coach Rob Walter paid tribute to Willamson by saying: "Anyone who's had the privilege of working with Kane understands he is a very special player and person."His numbers and batting skills speak for themselves, but it's what he means to this Black Caps team, as well as world cricket -- that will be his legacy."Williamson's retirement is a blow to New Zealand's hopes of levelling the England series, with Walter telling reporters in London: "You don't lose Kane Williamson off the team sheet and get stronger, because he's a legend." Walter, meanwhile declined to say who will take Williamson's place at No 3 at the Oval. Henry Nicholls is the reserve batsman in the squad but Rachin Ravindra could move up from No 4.Williamson's list of accolades is immense, including being named the ICC Cricketer of 2015 and Test player of the year in 2019, while also winning the domestic Sir Richard Hadlee Medal on a record four occasions.New Zealand great Hadlee hailed him as "a wonderful player and fine leader"."He's demonstrated a willingness to continually advance his game to the highest level in all three formats and he rightfully finishes as one of the best players of his era," he said."The way he prepared himself physically and mentally was perhaps the most impressive part. He was always committed to working hard and developing his technique to ensure he was ready to be a world class player."He's been an unflappable leader and the architect of some of our greatest moments in cricket."mp-jdg/ea

U-19 World Cup heartbreak spurred me: Yashveer Goud
When 18-year-old left-arm spinner Yashveer Goud did not make the Indian side that lifted the U-19 World Cup in February this year, it felt like his hopes had been crushed. Still, four months after that setback, another chance came his way. The leftarm spinner has been included in the Indian U-19 ODI squad that will tour Sri Lanka on July 4.Meanwhile, another city cricketer V Pratiksha has been selected to the Indian women’s U-19 ODI squad that will tour Sri Lanka.Yashveer is thrilled to have been picked. “Yes, I was very disappointed when I was not picked for the U-19 World Cup team earlier this year. It took some time to get out of it. But I realised that I needed to work harder and I did that. Now I got selected for this tour and it is like a dream. I don’t have words to describe the feeling. My parents – mother Vani and father Rajkumar – are my biggest support and they are very happy,” said the youngster.Currently a second-year B.Com student at Bhavan’s Vivekananda Degree College, Sainikpuri, he is aiming to represent India at senior level one day. However, due to the tour, he will be forced to miss the first edition of TG20. He has been named in the Hyderabad E-Champions squad.Yashveer, who previously played gully cricket on the streets of Amberpet, started his formal cricket journey at the age of eight at Daniel’s Cricket Academy. After spending six years training there under coach Kamlesh, he later moved to Bhavan’s College and began working with Krishna Mohan. After earning a place in the State U-16 team via open trials, his progress gathered pace quickly. He also made an important contribution to Hyderabad’s first title win in the BCCI Junior men’s U-19 Vinoo Mankad trophy. The useful lefthand batter, who looks up to Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, is keen to take full advantage of this opportunity.

'I'm going to have fun either way' - Canadian fans navigate split loyalties in World Cup
[Reuters]Nikola Vukelic is torn on who to cheer for in Canada's first Fifa World Cup game against Bosnia. The Toronto resident has been a football fan for most of his life, supporting local clubs in his home country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Witnessing the Bosnian national team defeat fan-favourite Italy to qualify for this year's World Cup was "surreal", he said. But Vukelic has also called Canada home since 1999.So, Vukelic's strategy is to mix his Team Bosnia jersey with Team Canada shorts on Friday to watch the match at home with friends near Toronto's BMO stadium, where Canada's opening game is set to take place. The game's victor does not matter much to him. "I'm going to have fun either way," he said. Many Canadians, like Vukelic, are used to navigating dual identities. More than 35% of the population - or 13 million people - identify as having multiple ethnic or cultural origins, according to the last census. That multiculturalism has been on full display on the streets of host cities Toronto and Vancouver in the lead up to the World Cup, where watch parties are being held in an Australian bar by Turkish fans, in the parking lot of a Balkan specialty food store, and at an Iraqi-owned hookah lounge – to name a few.A World Cup guide for new football fansEverything to know about Canada's men's team at the 2026 World CupIt has also been a selling point for Canadian football officials ahead of the North American tournament, which in the lead up has been complicated by US visa policies, travel bans and politics. In his opening remarks at this year's Fifa World Congress in Vancouver, Canada Soccer President Peter Augruso said the country's diversity stands out "in a world that can feel divided"."Here, the world doesn't just visit," he said. "The world lives, works, learns, and thrives together."Nikola Vukelic says he will be sporting both Team Bosnia and Team Canada gear as he watches Canada's FIFA 2026 World Cup opening game against Bosnia. [Supplied/Nikola Vukelic]For Adis and Amir Mrakovic, the Bosnian-Canadian owners of Mrakovic Fine Foods in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke, Canada's inaugural match against Bosnia is a "perfect storm", Adis said. "And we're right in the middle of it," his brother Amir added. The pair first came to Canada in 1994. Their father started the family business soon after, selling smoked meat products. Over the coming years, the store grew in size and began serving foods to the wider Balkan diaspora – they're particularly known for their grilled ćevapi kebabs – and has now become "a staple in the community", Adis said. The Mrakovic brothers watched Bosnia's road to the World Cup with excitement, but not too many expectations. The national team had not qualified for the tournament since 2014 and was facing fierce competitors like Austria and Italy."It was a shock for everybody," Amir said, when Bosnia defeated Italy in penalties at the fateful 31 March qualifying game, where the winner was set to face Canada in the first group round of the World Cup.Amir and Adis Mrakovic are hosting a World Cup party with a Bosnian flavour [Supplied/Adis Mrakovic]The brothers quickly decided to host a large watch party for the coming Canada-Bosnia match outside their Etobicoke store, complete with a 26-foot screen, a DJ and of course, grilled ćevapi. They are expecting hundreds of attendees, some travelling from as far as Montreal. The event is not meant to just celebrate Bosnia, they said, but also their Canadian identity. "We felt an obligation to bring people together," said Adis. His brother, Amir, added that the best case scenario for the game is a tie.Across the city in Toronto's Little Italy, the Azzuri's loss was met with stunning disappointment, as many in the city's Italian diaspora were looking forward to watch their ancestral home take on their adopted home.A week after Italy's loss, dozens lined up to swap their Team Italy kits with Team Canada ones at Cafe Diplomatico, an Italian restaurant that has doubled as a gathering place for Canadian football fans for decades, as part of a promotional campaign by Canada Soccer. When fans arrived to the front of the line, organisers told them that they did not have to give up their Italian jerseys after all, but could hold on to both - a revelation met with tears by some, Canada Soccer's spokesperson Paulo Senra told the Canadian Press at the time."It's very rare to be in a country like ours where you're allowed to have multiple homes in your hearts," Senra said.Toronto's Italian diaspora was stunned when Italy was eliminated from the World Cup by Bosnia and Herzogovina, who will face Canada in the World Cup on Friday [Getty Images]Excitement is also brewing across the country in Vancouver, home to several match-ups including Australia versus Turkey, New Zealand versus Egypt and Switzerland versus Canada. While Australia and Turkey may be geographically far apart, both country's fans will be gathered at the same Vancouver bar on Sunday for a watch party hosted by a local Turkish band. Ilyas Kayran, a member of Istanbul the Band, told the BBC that rivals cheering side-by-side is a normal sight in the western Canadian city. "This is Canadian identity," he said.Even Canada's own national team is a reflection of the country's diversity. Their captain and star player, Alphonso Davies, was born in a refugee camp in Ghana before his family emigrated and settled in Edmonton, Alberta, where he launched his playing career. It's the third time the country has qualified for the tournament - this time as a co-host - and first on home soil. They face long odds but the squad hopes to be the first Canadian team to reach the tournament's knockout round.Among the three host nations, Canada arguably has the smallest role hosting the global tournament of the world's most popular sport. While Mexico has three cities participating, Canada only has two. Both are hosting 13 matches each compared to the sprawling 78 taking place in the US.The price-tag for Canada, however, is still steep. The Parliamentary Budget Officer, an independent parliamentary watchdog, estimated the cost to taxpayers to be just over C$1bn ($720m; £540m) – or C$82m a game.Like other host cities, the cheapest tickets to attend Canadian games cost several hundred dollars, prompting criticism from fans who feel priced out from enjoying the tournament in-person in cities where the cost of living is already high.Hundreds of tickets remain unsold in both Vancouver and Toronto, and hotel and Airbnb demand in both cities is also lowerthan what was anticipated. But federal and provincial Canadian officials have embraced their hosting duties. Adam van Koeverden, Canada's FIFA Sherpa and secretary of state for sport, called it a "once-in-a-generation opportunity". As have fans like Vukelic, who admitted that the Bosnia versus Canada game he is highly anticipating is too costly to attend in person. That hasn't stopped him from soaking up the World Cup spirit and the "buzz" it will bring."The only thing we have to be careful about is the traffic here," he said half-heartedly. "Other than that, Toronto is ready for this."Watch: Is the US ready to host the 2026 World Cup?Messi, Maradona or Pele? DRC minister says US Ebola rules are disrupting its World Cup return
The NewsDR Congo’s sports minister said US Ebola travel restrictions are going “too far” after they kept him waiting in Europe under a 21-day entry rule and forced changes to his country’s first World Cup plans in 52 years.“All our players play in European competitions. They have not been in DR Congo recently,” Didier Budimbu told Semafor, saying he did not understand Spain’s decision to call off DR Congo’s World Cup warm-up against Chile this week over Ebola concerns. The match was moved to Orléans, France, and played behind closed doors, putting DR Congo inside a wider set of African concerns around the World Cup, including a FIFA-selected Somali referee denied entry to the US this week. The minister said he is waiting in Europe to clear a 21-day quarantine before entering the US. Eleven technical staff members completed the same process and received US visas from Belgium this week. “We have to comply with the laws of the countries hosting us,” Budimbu said, though he criticized the rules, saying Kinshasa is more than 2,000 kilometres from the outbreak zone in eastern DR Congo and has no Ebola cases in the capital.DR Congo’s national team was welcomed in Houston yesterday by Jay Bhattacharya, head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and CDC port health staff after arriving from a training base in Europe, following a reported temperature screening on the plane. The team had changed its preparations to limit exposure risks, including canceling a planned training camp in Kinshasa.Know MoreDR Congo last played at the World Cup in 1974, when the country was called Zaire and became the first sub-Saharan African side to reach the tournament. He said qualification back in March was celebrated even in cities in eastern Congo held by Rwanda-backed rebels. “Whether we like it or not, football brings us all together,” he said. But the government’s plan to bring about 300 supporters from Kinshasa has been cut back. Budimbu said Congo is now relying more on Congolese abroad, with a few well-known fans sent to Europe to wait out the 21-day window, including “Lumumba,” who went viral at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco for standing motionless through matches.DR Congo has been under Ebola-related pressure since May 15, when an outbreak was declared in the east. The Bundibugyo strain has infected more than 600 people and killed more than 120, with no approved vaccine or therapies. Three days after the outbreak was declared, the US halted visa services in Kinshasa and restricted entry for non-US citizens recently in DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan, making travel harder for Congolese supporters. Budimbu said government-purchased World Cup tickets will be allocated to Congolese abroad.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Rookie hitters steal the spotlight
For the second week in a row, hitters are stealing the waiver-wire spotlight. This week’s group is dominated by youngsters, as every hitter option is a rookie. There is also a terrific list of one-start streamers for those who need to make a late push in a head-to-head league.Hitters to addCarson Benge, OF, Mets, 48%: After Benge was mentioned in this column last week, he went out and had a 5-hit game against the Padres on June 7. The rookie was excellent in May (.801 OPS) and even better so far in June (.910 OPS). Benge has a nice blend of power and speed (7 HR, 10 SB), and as the Mets’ leadoff hitter, he should score plenty of runs. He has also hit .303 since May 1. He should be added in 3-OF leagues.Cole Carrigg, OF, Rockies, 6%: With 142 steals in 331 minor league games, Carrigg became one of baseball’s best base-stealing threats as soon as he arrived to the majors on June 9. The speedster could also be an asset in the batting average category, as he was hitting .338 in Triple-A this year and will have the benefit of playing half his games at Coors Field. His long-term usefulness remains in question, however, as outfielders Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak should come off the IL at some point in June. But those who need speed should add Carrigg and worry about his long-term viability later.Braden Montgomery, OF, White Sox, 37%: In comparison to Carrigg, Montgomery offers a more balanced profile but less potential to dominate a single category. The 2024 first-round pick has played in just 177 minor league games but was dominant this season by hitting .314 with 10 homers and a .970 OPS in 56 contests. He may have more staying power than Carrigg, as the White Sox have a greater permanent need in the outfield. The two prospects are similarly desirable in fantasy leagues, with managers basing their preference on the skill set they require. It’s also worth noting that Montgomery’s hot start — he owns a 1.444 OPS and hit a walk-off homer in his MLB debut — will earn him immediate opportunities.Bryce Eldridge, 1B, Giants, 25%: One of baseball’s most powerful prospects, Eldridge has found his stride in the majors. The 21-year-old has hit .426 with a 1.266 OPS since May 29, and a Giants offense that has been let down by multiple veterans and ranks 19th in runs scored is now being sparked by its youngest members. He put an exclamation on his coming-out party when he hit a walk-off grand slam against the Nats on June 10. Eldridge is a must-add player in 12-team leagues and can be considered in 10-team formats while he is swinging a hot bat.Pitchers to addNoah Cameron, SP, Royals, 46%: Cameron had logged a 5.55 ERA as of May 10, but over his past four outings, the right-hander has recorded a 1.13 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 27:3 K:BB ratio. Those are eye-popping numbers from someone who was once a notable prospect and produced a 2.99 ERA and 1.10 WHIP as a rookie last season. One of the hottest pitchers in baseball, Cameron needs to be rostered in 10-team leagues until he cools off.Dustin May, SP, Cardinals, 32%: May was mentioned in this space last week, and he is an even more appealing option after he tossed six shutout innings against the Mets on June 9. Following two disastrous starts to open the season, the right-hander has logged a 2.89 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 59:17 K:BB ratio across his past 11 outings. He has allowed just three homers over that stretch, which makes sense given his solid 47.5% groundball rate. Like Cameron, May has become an option in 10-team leagues.Alex Lange, RP, Royals, 24%: After Lucas Erceg proved unable to hold the closer’s role, Royals manager Matt Quataro pivoted to a ninth-inning committee. It seems that those plans didn’t last long, as Lange has earned four of the team’s past five saves. The former Tiger isn’t a dominant reliever, as is evidenced by his 4.06 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 34:18 K:BB ratio. But he may be just good enough to hold the role for a while, which makes him an option in leagues where saves are scarce. He’s my No. 2 waiver wire reliever this week, behind Rangers reliever Jacob Latz (43%), who was covered in last week’s article and still has a roster rate below 50%.Hitters with favorable weekend matchupsZack Gelof, 2B/3B/OF, Athletics, 23%: Gelof has played regularly of late, as a reduced strikeout rate has helped him to post a respectable .266 average. He has always had an intriguing blend of power and speed that was limited by his frequent whiffs, and this season he has produced eight homers and six steals in 173 at-bats. The multi-position asset could be part of three high-scoring games this weekend, when the below-average pitching staffs on the Athletics and Rockies meet up for a series at the homer-happy Las Vegas Ballpark.2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One: The group stage is here, make your picks now!Jackson Holliday, 2B/SS, Orioles, 40%: Throughout his brief career, the left-handed hitting Holliday has fared well against right-handers while being overmatched versus southpaws. As such, he will be well-positioned for success this week, when he plays a home series against three unimposing San Diego righties. Although the 22-year-old hasn’t excelled since he returned from a season-opening IL stint, he has still managed to accumulate three homers and three steals in 21 games.Pitchers to stream this weekend (ranked in order of preference)Cade Cavalli vs. SEA (Saturday, 33% rostered)Noah Cameron vs. HOU (Saturday, 46%)Griffin Jax @ LAA (Saturday, 29)Trevor Rogers @ SD (Sunday, 49)Trevor McDonald vs. CHC (Saturday, 11)Michael McGreevy @ MIN (Sunday, 36)Jack Leiter @ BOS (Friday, 37)Grant Holmes @ NYM (Sunday, 30)Stephen Kolek vs. HOU (Sunday, 22)Randy Vasquez @ BAL (Saturday, 35)Joey Cantillo vs. DET (Saturday, 26)Sean Burke vs. LAD (Friday, 23)Connor Prielipp vs. STL (Saturday, 8)Rhett Lowder vs. ARI (Saturday, 7)Colin Rea @ SF (Sunday, 12)

College World Series Bracket Breakdown: How Alabama Baseball Matches Up in Omaha
Jun 8, 2026; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Alabama third baseman Jason Torres (32) and Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn embrace as the Crimson Tide players and coaches celebrate their 7-2 win over St. John’s to earn a trip to the College World Series. Torres hit a grand slam in the final game. | Gary Cosby Jr. / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Alabama Crimson Tide have reached the College World Series for the first time since 1999, but you can bet that they aren’t satisfied with a mere appearance. Advancing isn’t going to be easy, however, considering the gauntlet that lies ahead.Of the eight teams in Omaha, five are from the SEC and Alabama is on the side of the bracket will only other conference members. The Tide opens play with Oklahoma, who finished 11th in the SEC to the Tide’s fourth place finish. The other two teams are Georgia, who won both the regular season and tournament championships, and Texas Longhorns that finished second in the conference. The other team fro the Southeastern Conference, Ole Miss, is on the other side with Troy, West Virginia, and North Carolina. The Rebels are considered to be in the easier side of things, avoiding meeting any of their conference foes until the final round.Game one: A rematch with the Oklahoma Sooners These two met in early April, with the Tide taking two of three in Norman. Both teams have changed a lot over the past two months, but obviously will be familiar with each other’s style of play and personnel. Alabama was hot down the stretch while the Sooners stumbled to the finish line in SEC play, but Oklahloma made it into Regionals and took down second overall seed Georgia Tech in an exciting series, then traveled to Kansas and took down the Jayhawks in Super play.OU hit .289 as a team with 83 home runs, 100 doubles, 17 triples, and 124-146 stolen bases. Those marks are almost all ahead of the Tide’s .258, 80 home runs, 101 doubles, 10 triples, and 86 stolen bases in 94 attempts. Oklahoma pitches to a 5.15 ERA with a .236 batting average against with 264 walks, and 596 strikeouts. Alabama carries a 4.08 ERA with a .245 batting average against, 210 walks, and 532 strikeouts.Oklahoma will likely start Cord Rager against the Tide in the World Series game, after not pitching against Bama in the earlier series. Alabama is most likely to go with Tyler Fay, who has opened every series for the Tide this season. Rager is 5-3 with a 5.20 ERA in 64 innings pitched with 81 strikeouts, 19 walks, and 50 hits allowed. Fay is 11-4 with 4.37 ERA over 103 innings pitched while allowing only 85 hits, 24 walks, with 121 strikeouts. Individually for the Sooners, Dasan Harris leads the team with a .362 average and 18 steals in 19 attempts. Deiten Lechance is hitting .332 with 15 home runs, 62 RBI, and 12 doubles. Camden Johnson has a .309 average with nine home runs, 47 RBI and has swiped 28 bases in 31 tries. Brenden Brock is a .293 hitter with 12 home runs, 52 RBI and 27 bags in 30 attempts. Trey Gambill also hits .293 with 12 doubles and has stolen 16 bases. Oklahoma has some pop and a lot of speed for the Tide to deal with.Game two: Either Georgia or Texas The Bulldogs and Longhorns will battle, boasting two of the top offenses in the country. Each team has a clear number one pitcher as well. For Georgia, Joey Volchko is the likely starter against Texas and should face off against Dylan Volantis for Texas. Volchko has a 10-2 record with a 4.07 ERA over 17 starts and 86 innings. The big right hander has allowed 78 hits with 45 walks and 104 strikeouts. Volantis, last season’s National Freshman of the Year, is a big lefty that dominated this season. The sophomore starter has a 10-1 record with a 2.03 ERA in 88 innings, with 126 strikeouts, a .192 batting average against, and has allowed only two home runs all year.Georgia mashed their way to a .326 team batting average with 123 doubles, a nation leading 174 home runs, with a .439 on base percentage and .629 slugging mark. The team struck out 497 times and walked 334 times with 124 hit by pitches. The list of offensive stars is long for the Dogs. Georgia pitching has a 4.92 ERA with 273 walks, 653 strikeouts, 82 home runs allowed and a .242 batting average against. SEC Player of the Year, and the favorite for the Golden Spikes Award, catcher Daniel Jackson leads the way with a .396 average, 31 home runs, 13 doubles, 86 RBI, an absurd 1.339 OPS and 26 stolen bases in 28 tries. Centerfielder Rylan Luju hits .374 with 15 doubles, 13 home runs, 45 RBI, and 13 stolen base. Tre Phelps logs in with a .364 average, 10 doubles, 19 home runs, and 58 runs driven in. Part time player Michael O’Shaughnessy has 21 home runs and 50 RBI with a .296 batting average. Shortstop Kolby Branch has a .297 average with 19 home runs, 18 doubles, and 58 RBI. The list goes on and on. Texas is almost as strong offensively as the Bulldogs, but has better pitching. The Longhorns hit .298 as a team with 103 home runs, 109 doubles, a .521 slugging percentage, and a .420 on base percentage. Texas pitchers have a team ERA of 4.08 with 192 walks, 658 strikeouts, and a .225 batting average against.Freshman outfielder Anthony Pack leads the ‘Horns with a .359 average plus 11 home runs, 16 doubles, 52 RBI, and 23 stolen bases. Centerfielder Aiden Robbins comes in with .342 average, 24 home runs, 64 RBI, and 12 stolen bases. Catcher Carson Tinney checks in with a .333 average with 22 home runs, 12 doubles, 10 stolen bases and 58 runs driven in.Looking AheadIf the Tide plays the Longhorns, the matchup should be Adams for the Tide against Ruger Riojas or perhaps Luke Harrison. Bama faced both in Austin earlier in the season, and more success against Harrison in their lone victory of the series. Both are tough matchups and I would think Riojas would get the nod. Adams pitched six shutout innings against the Horns, allowing only five hits with seven strikeouts in one of his best performances. If the Tide faces Georgia, they will most likely send Zane Adams to face Caden Aoki. Aoki is 9-1 with a 4.04 ERA in 19 games with eight starts, while striking out 104 in 78 innings. Adams is 8-4 with a 3.96 ERA over 88 innings, allowing 90 hits with 27 walks and 98 strikeouts. If Alabama play Georgia they cannot get in a shootout with them, that’s a game the Tide can’t play. The first priority is obviously to win game one. Alabama knows that whichever team they face, they will be in for a battle. Having not played Georgia and knowing what the Longhorns bring, Texas is probably the preferred matchup. The Crimson Tide faces Oklahoma on Saturday, June 13 at 2:00 PM CT, airing on ESPN.Roll TideBama Baseball Fever, Catch It!

Ted Cruz tried to insult James Talarico’s masculinity. It backfired immediately.
Since Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D) became the state Democratic Party’s nominee for U.S. Senate, the GOP has focused almost exclusively on discrediting him by attacking his masculinity and accusing him of being gay or trans. And the jabs don’t seem to be slowing down. Earlier this week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) appeared on Fox New and joined the chorus of conservative voices claiming that Talarico is simply not man enough to be a senator. Related The GOP’s actual strategy against James Talarico? Call him a fa**ot “I gotta say, if you were making a list of 1,000 adjectives to describe this guy, ‘masculine’ would not be one of them,” Cruz said of Talarico. “I mean, this guy, if a stiff breeze came by, it would blow him over like a feather. This is also a guy who – his campaign – he ran a vegan, no meat campaign because meat is destroying the world. He’s opposed to oil and gas. This is the Democrat party!” Talarico faces Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) in the general election and has shown signs that he could win. In response, Republicans have been calling him transgender because he supports trans rights; saying that he is dating a man (he is not); and calling him a “freak” and a “creep,” words often used to attack LGBTQ+ people. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Elections Stay ahead of the election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. Subscribe to our Newsletter today White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said last month that Talarico is the Democrats’ “first transgender senate candidate” and then told Fox News host Jesse Watters – who has a long history of discussing his personal insecurities with masculinity on air – that Talarico is “clearly transitioning into a female.” Miller joked that Talarico “doesn’t belong in the Senate but in a cabaret show,” which was a homophobic joke since gay people are often associated with musical theater. Folks on social media have ruthlessly mocked Cruz both for thinking that attacking Talarico’s physical strength is a useful tactic and also for thinking he, himself, could be considered a beacon of masculinity. Many pointed out that Cruz fled the state for Mexico during a terrifying winter storm in 2021 that knocked out power and gas to millions, stranding Texans without heat, water, and shelter. The anti-LGBTQ+ senator was shamed for flying to Cancun with his family as his constituents suffered. Others slammed Cruz for criticizing someone else’s masculinity after he maintained staunch support for the current president, despite the fact that he insulted Cruz’s wife’s appearance in a 2016 social media post. But according to Stephen Miller, Texans are “some of the toughest, roughest, strongest men and women,” so they will naturally vote for “a real conservative, patriotic, god-fearing, and truly be loved statewide figure” like Paxton instead of “somebody with that much soy” like Talarico. ‘The strongest team since 2006’ – Paul Pogba on the standard of the 2026 France squad
‘The strongest team since 2006’ – Paul Pogba on the standard of the 2026 France squadConsidered one of the hot favourites to win the World Cup, France remain a team whose true standard is difficult to gauge. For whilst the individual players in the squad are undoubtedly among the best in the business, their collective performances sometimes reveal a weakness that, if exploited by their opponents, could prove costly for Didier Deschamps’ men.Paul Pogba (33), who won the World Cup with this very same team eight years ago, however, is not worried. On the contrary, he considers this to be the best version of Les Bleus in 20 years.“It might be the strongest team since 2006, given all the talent we have,” said the midfielder in an interview with L’Équipe. “I think there’s an even better team than in 2022 and 2018 in terms of individual quality. But this is a World Cup: it’s not just talent that will come into play. We all know this is one of the strongest nations, given the season the players have had and the fact that the Ballon d’Or winner is French.”A status synonymous with “extra pressure” for the AS Monaco player, who makes no secret of his interest in Portugal, Spain and Brazil either. Be that as it may, if the French team were really as strong as they were in 2006, there is every reason to believe they would once again be among the favourites to play a leading role in this World Cup.And the good news is: this time, they’re unlikely to face their Italian nemeses.

The 12 La Masia talents Hansi Flick will call for pre-season preparations – report
The 12 La Masia talents Hansi Flick will call for pre-season preparations – reportBarcelona’s pre-season could become a major opportunity for La Masia, with Hansi Flick preparing to work with a long list of academy talents during the summer. With several first-team players involved at the World Cup, Flick will not have his full senior squad available from day one. That opens the door for young players to train under him and even get a chance to take part in some friendlies during pre-season.According to SPORT, 12 youngsters are expected to work with Flick during the preparatory period. This includes the likes of Hamza Abdelkarim, Orian Goren, Toni Fernandez, Guille Fernandez, Jofre Torrents, Tommy Marques, Shane Kluivert, Oscar Gistau, Ebrima Tunkara, Ibrahim Diarra, Xavi Espart and Alvaro Cortes.Shane Kluivert will get a call-up. (Photo by Warren Little/Getty Images)Flick has always placed considerable trust in La Masia prospects as a manager, and this allows him to look at some of these talents at close quarters.La Masia gets another platformHamza is one of the most exciting names after arriving from Egypt, and he will join pre-season after being away on World Cup duty with his nation.Jofre Torrents, Toni Fernandez and Guille Fernandez are already well known inside the club. Tommy Marques is also highly rated and has been in the first-team scheme of things for some time now. There will also be attention on Shane Kluivert, who is the son of the legendary Patrick Kluivert. Then, there is Xavi Espart, who has already shown enough versatility and maturity under Flick.Alvaro Cortes, meanwhile, gives the coach another defensive profile to assess after already making his first-team debut.Ebrima Tunkara will do the pre-season. (Picture credit: Instagram/@ebrimatunkara10)The most exciting name on the list, without a doubt, is Ebrima Tunkara, who was one of the standout performers at the recent U17 European Championship.Flick can shape futures quicklyPre-season can change everything at Barcelona.Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, Gavi, Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal are recent reminders that a young player only needs the right moment, the right mentality and the right coach to progress through the ranks quickly. Not everyone on this list will make the first team. That is normal. Some may go on loan, some may stay with Barca Atletic or Juvenil A, and some will need more time. For these 12 youngsters, this summer is an audition. For Barcelona, it is another chance to discover who might be ready sooner than expected.

After NCAA decision, UND coach Eric Schmidt says 'you don't run and hide; you meet it head on'
Jun. 12—GRAND FORKS — Less than a week after the NCAA leveled penalties on the UND football program for what the organization deemed a tampering recruiting violation, Fighting Hawks head football coach Eric Schmidt stood in front of hundreds of recruits and their families Thursday afternoon. The second-year head coach has about 300 high school athletes across 16 states and Canada and about 45 college football coaches representing about 20 different programs at the Pollard Center and Memorial Stadium this week in what Schmidt says is the biggest camp they've put on at UND.So how does Schmidt plan to continue his recruiting momentum amid the NCAA's decision?"You don't run and hide; you meet it head on," Schmidt said. "I think anybody that has been recruited by our staff understands that we're going to do this thing to win our league, win a national championship, and we want to do it honestly, with integrity."Any questions recruits have or parents have ... we're not even waiting for questions. We're saying, 'Hey, this is what happened. This is what we believe in.' We're going to live with the decision. We're going to move on from it. We're not going to complain about it. At the same token, we're going to do everything we can to make sure that we're doing what we can do to make sure that North Dakota is getting the kids here that we want within the rules."According to the NCAA report, UND assistant coach Travis Stepps had "impermissible recruiting conversations" with an athlete from another school who was not entered in the transfer portal. The athlete, who Stepps had a previous relationship in recruiting, reached out to UND in hopes of leaving his current junior college. The athlete eventually transferred to Lindenwood.UND self-reported the violation, which the NCAA raised to Level II status and handed out a $25,000 fine, a one-week ban on communication with recruits, a 3% reduction in official paid visits, a one-game suspension for the offending assistant coach and a year of probation. After Schmidt and UND athletic director Bill Chaves offered official statements on the matter last Friday that expressed both an acceptance of the NCAA decision and a frustration with the penalties, the football program quickly returned to the constant churn of the recruiting cycle.UND's camp this week features 2027, 2028, 2029 and even a few 2030 prospects hoping to be seen by the varying levels of college football coaches, ranging from UND coaches at the FCS level to a school like Minnesota Duluth at the Division II level and a school like Mayville State of the NAIA level.Schmidt said UND is happy with the large number of prospects, although he doesn't want the camp to grow any bigger."To be this attractive to this many kids tells you something," Schmidt said. "Our assistant coaches were able to get the message out to kids, and we're making sure we have relationships with the best kids in the Upper Midwest. For us, it's the right number. We don't want to get any bigger, so the kids can come here and feel like they get the best bang for their buck — get evaluated and get enough reps to not just have to stand in line all day."The nature of the UND camp hasn't changed much over the years, although the program now possesses the facilities to show off to campers and their families."Kids are constantly walking around, and we have a lot of our players here wrapping up workouts, so we want to showcase the best environment where kids from wherever in the Upper Midwest feel the energy, effort and focus ... the attention to detail and everything that is next level," Schmidt said.UND's camp includes a mix of combine-like testing and drills."We're really trying to get a baseline as far as what their athletic ability is ... how fast they are, how well they generate power in a short amount of time, how they change direction," Schmidt said. "With the evaluation piece, we also want to see who has some contact courage. That's really important in football. Who's willing to put their face on it and move people? We also want them to learn some things that they can take back to their high school teams, and ultimately it's going to make them a better player, and it's going to make their high school team better, too.Schmidt said it's important to him to give area players the opportunity to be seen by the varying level of college coaches."A kid from Bottineau ... I want him to be able to get seen by a coach from Duluth or Mankato because it's probably not going to happen the rest of the year," Schmdit said. "We want kids from the region to be able to get the exposure to be able to have opportunities to play football past high school. It's obviously UND's camp, and we want to do a good job of getting evaluations on all these kids and get the guys who fit our traits, but we want to do a great job of making sure (campers) feel like they got a great experience here, that they're welcome here."

Rockets star Alperen Sengun headlines Turkey’s 2026 FIBA roster
Continuing a trend from recent offseasons, Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun will again play for his native Turkey in an international competition. In 2026, Sengun is headlining Turkey’s roster for the upcoming FIBA World Cup European qualifiers, for which two games are scheduled on July 2 and July 5.For those who qualify, the next FIFA Basketball World Cup will take place in 2027. With a 4-0 record, Turkey currently leads Group C and is in strong position to eventually qualify.Coming off his second straight NBA All-Star appearance, Sengun — who turns 24 years old in July — is in line to be the clear star on this year’s Turkish squad. He was also the centerpiece in 2025, when Turkey earned the silver medal at that year’s FIBA EuroBasket competition. From a Rockets standpoint, Sengun’s consistent involvement in international play brings both risks and opportunity. An ill-timed offseason injury is the greatest fear, though it’s worth noting that those can also happen in a non-official capacity. Just ask Fred VanVleet, who tore the ACL in his right knee during a September 2025 scrimmage.More realistically, the risk is that while playing year-round basketball, a player might run low on energy due to not taking sufficient time to rest and recover from the grind of an NBA season. Then again, the opportunity is that by playing in an international competition over the summer, Sengun is likely to report to the Rockets’ training camp in September in peak physical condition. That could allow him to hit the ground running when the 2026-27 season begins in October.More: NBA player poll: Rockets star Alperen Sengun deemed ‘most overrated’Turkiye has announced its preliminary roster for the upcoming FIBA World Cup European qualifiers, with Alperen Sengun leading the way 💪🔥Full Turkiye roster details: https://t.co/gipqvPg5G9pic.twitter.com/2uUB88Tgja— BasketNews (@BasketNews_com) June 11, 2026This article originally appeared on Rockets Wire: Rockets star Alperen Sengun headlines Turkey’s 2026 FIBA roster

Should these Cincinnati Reds be buyers, or sellers?
Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Reds fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys. The 2026 Cincinnati Reds are in last place in the National League Central division, again. They’re a team that owns a dismal -54 run differential, a mark that’s the second worst in the NL behind only the Colorado Rockies. In fact, that’s worse than every single American League team, too. So, it’s just the Reds and the Rockies when it comes to how badly teams have been outscored so far this season. Not good! This Reds club, though, is still 32-35, just a trio of games under the .500 mark. And in the age of the superexpanded megaplayoffs, they sit just 3 games back of the final Wild Card spot as the NL playoff picture takes shape. That’s knowing that they’ll be getting ace Hunter Greene back within the next four weeks, and knowing they’ll get superstar Elly De La Cruz back in another week or so.Then they’ll get back closer Emilio Pagan. They just got back slugger Eugenio Suarez. The totality of what their record, run differential, etc. shows they have been so far in 2026 is vastly different than what they should, in theory, expect to have ready for the stretch run this season.Teams don’t get the privilege of waiting until the final month to make all of their moves, however. The trade deadline – set this year for August 3rd – means teams must accurately gauge how good, or how bad, they expect to be during the playoff push well in advance of actually playing those games, and decide whether what they have is worth further investment (or worth tearing down for future gains). So, where does this Reds club stand? Should they really go get more players, be buyers and chase this season’s dreams? Please take our surveyOr, should they sell off some of the short-term pieces that haven’t helped them get over the hump once again in 2026?That’s the topic of debate this week here at Red Reporter. Let us know in the survey above which direction you think Cincinnati should lean this trade season!

Judge denies class action lawsuit to challenge DOJ’s collection of trans kids’ medical information
Maryland District Court Judge Julie Rubin has denied a request to turn a challenge against one of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) requests for trans youth’s private health information into a class action lawsuit, which would have allowed the case to quash the subpoenas seeking private health records nationwide. Trans advocates are fighting the DOJ’s campaign of subpoenas, which they say is an effort to end gender-affirming care through “fear.” Related Federal judge rips into Trump administration lawyers & refers them for disciplinary proceedings “This is pure intimidation,” said Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for LGBTQ Rights (NCLR), who represented the families in the case. “This administration has targeted this very small group of families, families with transgender kids. This administration does not like transgender people. They want to stop this healthcare, and they are abusing their power to literally try to intimidate and harass doctors and parents in order to further that political goal.” The motion was brought by 11 families, represented by lawyers from NCLR and GLAD Law, and Judge Rubin’s decision was released after a hearing on Tuesday. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The class-action lawsuit was an attempt to consolidate the litigation resulting from the over 20 administrative subpoenas issued by the DOJ. Hospitals that provide gender-affirming care to minors have been pressured to release extensive details about their providers, patients, and any treatments. That has now escalated with the DOJ seeking court orders to enforce the subpoenas and empaneling a grand jury to issue criminal subpoenas. As it stands, every subpoena must be challenged in court individually, putting pressure on families, hospitals, and advocacy groups to play subpoena whack-a-mole to protect patient data. The movants – those filing the motion – asserted that “absent classwide protection, DOJ will continue extracting transgender minors’ private health information hospital by hospital, faster than any individual can move to quash.” A similar motion for a narrower class certification focused on New York hospitals is pending in a different court. Had the class been certified, it would have meant that the subpoenas issued nationwide could be quashed without individual cases and without the risk of inconsistent rulings. Judge Rubin, while denying class certification, showed sympathy for the movants and is one of the multiple judges who already quashed a DOJ subpoena earlier this year, specifically the one targeting Children’s National Hospital (CNH) in D.C. She ruled that the subpoena represented “overreach untethered to any lawful purpose.” The DOJ claimed in the Tuesday hearing that the subpoenas were “part of a nationwide investigation into the off-label use of puberty blockers and hormones for minors.” However, it is worth noting that prescribing medication off-label is not a crime and is commonly done when, for example, aspirin is prescribed to help reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes. The DOJ also argued that the judge could not grant the certification because “there is no precedent for a single district to exercise nationwide supervision over the department’s subpoenas.” Ultimately, the judge’s denial of certification turned on a technical question of whether certain statutes were applicable. “The question then is whether Rule 23, and the class action vehicle, is applicable here,” Judge Rubin wrote in her decision. “The court is not persuaded that it is.” The judge seemed to agree that there was a need for some sort of relief, as shown by her previous decision to quash the DOJ’s subpoena, but had to stop short of certifying the class. “Movants’ request for class treatment is simply an ill fit for the matter before the court and the relief they seek. The court will therefore deny the Motion to the extent it seeks class certification.” Minter noted during his appeal for the certification that “this happens to be about this specific group of families, but this could be any family in any state targeted for any reason (because) this administration decides it doesn’t like something and it’s against a particular type of health care.” There was still a win for the movants in this case as, while the class certification was denied, Rubin did reaffirm the decision to quash the DOJ’s subpoena to CNH without mincing words, saying, “The Government seeks to fulfill its policy agenda through compliance born of fear. Moreover, in the view of the court, the CNH Subpoena is the classic impermissible fishing expedition.” In those individual cases against subpoenas, the plaintiffs have repeatedly succeeded in having the DOJ’s subpoenas quashed when taking them to court. Most recently, a federal judge has temporarily blocked all California hospitals from producing documents in response to DOJ criminal subpoenas. California is currently reviewing Assembly Bill 1930, which was filed in response to these subpoenas and would prevent California hospitals from releasing information in response to them.
