SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBoost for Arsenal as Spalletti Wants Lazio Left-Back at JuventusBoost for Arsenal as Spalletti Wants Lazio Left-Back at JuventusJuventus head coach Luciano Spalletti has reportedly identified Lazio full-back Nuno Tavares as a player he’d like to add to his squad.Juventus Could Part Ways with Andrea CambiasoThe Turin-based club is currently undergoing a revamp at the top managerial level. CEO Damien Comolli has announced his departure at the end of a disappointing campaign, with Giovanni Carnevali set to replace him. Once the new officials assume their posts, the Bianconeri’s transfer business can begin. After failing to qualify for the Champions League, Juventus could be forced to sell at least one key player, and many believe it could be Andrea Cambiaso, who has suitors among the European elite.Juventus Keeping Tabs on TavaresAccording to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Italian’s replacement at the Allianz Stadium could be Tavares, a profile admired by Spalletti. The transfer market expert quashes rumors linking Juventus to Tottenham Hotspur’s Destiny Udogie, who will be a key player for Roberto De Zerbi. He also doesn’t expect any of Grimaldo, Matteo Ruggeri or Emerson Palmieri to arrive. However, Pedulla insists that the Bianconeri have yet to open a dialogue with Lazio, who refused to sell the Portuguese player to a Saudi club (namely Al-Hilal) last summer.Arsenal Monitoring Tavares SituationTavares joined the Biancocelesti in the summer of 2024, initially on loan from Arsenal. The Italian capital side then exercised the option to buy him for €6 million last summer, but the Gunners retain a significant sell-on fee (worth 35-40%), so they have taken a keen interest in the 26-year-old’s future.Would Lazio Sell Tavares? The Aquile have already signed a new left-back in Alfonso Pedraza, who will join on a free transfer when his contract with Villarreal expires at the end of the month. However, most sources have expected Lazio to keep Tavares and instead sell Luca Pellegrini, who has been linked with Como and Hull City.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAncelotti has designed a specific plan to get the best out of Real Madrid superstar with BrazilAncelotti has designed a specific plan to get the best out of Real Madrid superstar with BrazilVinicius Jr. will carry enormous expectations into the 2026 World Cup, and Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti appears to have designed a tactical setup specifically to maximise the Real Madrid star’s strengths.According to GE Globo (h/t Madrid Xtra), Ancelotti intends to use Vinicius in a hybrid role during the tournament to bring the best out of him.Freedom to attack from his preferred positionThe 25-year-old will operate from the left wing when Brazil have possession, allowing him the freedom to attack defenders in the spaces where he is most dangerous. However, when Brazil drop into a defensive shape, Vinicius is expected to move centrally and act as the team’s reference point for counterattacks.Ancelotti has a special plan for Vinicius. (Photo by Wagner Meier/Getty Images)It is a role that would suit him perfectly. Vinicius has never been inclined to track back and help out defensively and, whether Matheus Cunha or Endrick play as the striker, they can cover for him.It is the exact role in which he has produced many of his best performances for Real Madrid over recent years, becoming a decisive figure in both domestic and European competitions.Ancelotti knows better than most how effective Vinicius can be when given freedom in attacking situations.During their successful spell together at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Brazilian developed into one of the most feared forwards in world football.Good news for Real MadridVini will be key for Brazil. (Photo by Darrian Traynor/Getty Images)Real Madrid fans will love what they are hearing about how Ancelotti plans to use Vinicius. There has been criticism in the past that the Madrid star does not play at his best for the Selecao, but in Ancelotti, he has someone who knows how to bring the best out of him.The World Cup represents a major opportunity for Vinicius to further cement his status among the game’s elite players.Brazil have big dreams under Ancelotti, and if they are keen to reconquer the throne, Vinicius will have to play a key role in it.Let’s wait and see if Ancelotti’s plans bring the best out of Vinicius for Brazil.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBaltimore Ravens’ Derrick Henry returns to Yulee roots to give backAn NFL football player with ties to our area is once again giving back to his community. Courtesy of his All Two Foundation. Baltimore Ravens player Derrick Henry gave bicycles, scooters, backpacks, autographs, and other prizes to children in his native Yulee, FL. “Oh yeah, I love being a blessing to the community, being a blessing to kids,” said Henry. The first 300 kids inside the Yule Sports Complex Gymnasium received the prizes. Henry was a running back and quarterback when he played high school football in Yulee. “I’m gonna be able to like zoom around in a new cooler way,” said 12-year-old Lila Swim about her new scooter. Being able to receive a bike was especially heartwarming for 11-year-old Cayden Holcey. “Like he’s with his grandmother for the summer. She does not have transportation, so I was able to network and bring him a bike. Have fun, and it’s a blessing. Derrick Henry is a blessing to this community,” said Shalene Raysor. “I’m feeling very happy and thankful that Miss Sharlene got me here. I’m very happy for myself that I even got something cause I would’ve never been here without her being here,” said Holcey. Perhaps the biggest gift of all went to a young man —$10,000. toward his college education. “I wanna do it in Baltimore, hopefully Nashville, and Alabama,” said Henry. “You can always do more. God has blessed me tremendously. I just wanna be a blessing back to the community. I wanna do it especially for my high school where I grew up,” he added. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArkansas basketball wing Isaiah Sealy injures knee, requires surgeryFAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas basketball sophomore Isaiah Sealy sustained a knee injury in a recent practice that will require surgery, according to a social media post from head coach John Calipari. Calipari said that the Razorbacks do not know the current timeline for Sealy's return. "I am disappointed for him because he has gotten so much better and spent time working on his game," Calipari wrote on the 'X' app. Sealy played sparingly across 19 games during his freshman season. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 2.9 points and 1.3 rebounds while shooting 50% from the field. In his collegiate debut against Southern, Sealy scored 12 points, going 6 of 6 at the free throw line. He made an impact in Arkansas' win over Mississippi State with six points and three blocks, gathering extended minutes due to Karter Knox and D.J. Wagner injuries.Fortunately for Calipari, Arkansas will have strong depth at Sealy's position. Billy Richmond III is back, and a pair of five-star freshmen are already on campus in the forms of JJ Andrews and Abdou Toure. Those three were likely ahead of Sealy in the pecking order for minutes prior to this injury. Sealy was a consensus four-star recruit coming out of Springdale High School in the 2025 class. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKingussie beat Newtonmore in fiery final to retain MacTavish Cup[BBC]Kingussie retained the MacTavish Cup with a 2-0 defeat of local rivals Newtonmore in a bad-tempered final at Bught Park in Inverness.A busy but unproductive first half boiled down to a single save at either end - Kingussie's Bob MacGregor denying Iain Robinson, then Kenny Ross thwarting Ruaridh Anderson.Within two minutes of the restart, 55-year-old Ross - who was man of the match - produced an spectacular stop from Dylan Borthwick's effort. As the hour approached Newtonmore captain Robinson was floored, sparking a melee involving more than a dozen players as the game became markedly more fraught. Then Savio Genini - 30 yards out on the left - smashed the ball past Ross for Kingussie's opener. With 10 minutes remaining, Lee Bain had the ball in the net for what looked like Kingussie's second but his effort was disallowed. The second goal did eventually come in the 10th minute of stoppage time when captain Ruaridh Anderson, his left leg bandaged and blooded, made the defining strike that confirmed a first trophy for Kingussie manager Ronald Ross in his debut season. In the MacAulay Cup quarter-finals, Skye dispatched Lovat 4-0 at Balgate and Oban Camanachd saw off Bute 3-0 at Mossfield.Kyles conceded first to hosts Aberdour from two leagues below and only progressed 2-1 with a late winner.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

Grace Ballinger backed up Andrews' efforts with 3-49.Second-placed Hampshire, meanwhile, registered their second highest ever List-A total to beat Somerset by 39 runs.Francesca Sweet top-scored with 57 from 52 deliveries, while Rhianna Southby contributed 53 and Maia Bouchier 50 as Hampshire posted 303-7.Spinners Liv Barnes and Lola Harris claimed 3-54 and 2-56 respectively, their performances the only highlight of a below-par Somerset showing in the field. The home side made a good fist of chasing, Anika Learoyd and Bex Odgers scoring 87 and 77 respectively and staging a second wicket stand of 161 in 25 overs to threaten an unlikely outcome. But Amanda Jade Wellington returned figures of 3-52 and Georgia Adams 3-45 as Somerset, well-placed at 199-1, were eventually dismissed for 264 in 46.3 overs.Classy centuries from both Meg Austin and Katie George led Warwickshire to a 20-run victory over lowly Lancashire and a third straight success.Austin (116) and George (127) put on 166 for the third wicket which, despite the excellence of Lancashire opener Eve Jones (113), proved a match-winning partnership as the visitors fell short on 294 in reply to the hosts' 314-7.In Saturday's other game, Durham defeated Essex by 46 runs as teenage seamer Trudy Johnson wrecked the hosts' top order with a three-wicket burst. The 19-year-old finished with 3-28, including wickets in successive deliveries, to restrict Essex to 245 - 47 short of their target - despite half-centuries by Flo Miller and debutant Nancy Harman, signed on a short-term loan from Hampshire.Earlier, a century partnership between former Essex all-rounder Mady Villiers, who struck 76 from 70 and visiting skipper Hollie Armitage, with 69 from 78, put Durham in control at 199-2.Spinner Sophia Smale (4-51) pegged them back by dismissing both batters in quick succession but, despite losing six wickets for 56, Durham's total of 291-9 proved to be adequate.Match report details supplied by ECB Reporters' Network, supported by RothesayNotifications, social media and more with BBC Sport0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Real Madrid boss Arbeloa close to Premier League appointmentFormer Real Madrid boss Arbeloa close to Premier League appointmentFormer Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa is inching towards an imminent return to management, in the Premier League. This comes amid the understanding that the Spaniard is in advanced negotiations to replace Marco Silva at London-based outfit Fulham.Arbeloa is of course fresh off his first taste of senior management, after being cast into the world football limelight as Xabi Alonso’s successor at Real Madrid. The Spaniard was appointed only through the summer, with his struggles to impress having seen Florentino Pérez and co. opt against offering Arbeloa an extended deal.As alluded to above, though, the ex-defender’s reputation has evidently not taken too much of a hit elsewhere across Europe. As per a report from market insider Matteo Moretto, Arbeloa is on course to be named the new head coach of Fulham over the days ahead:‘The conversations between Fulham and Álvaro Arbeloa are progressing smoothly.‘Following the contacts maintained in recent days between the representatives of the Spanish coach, Óscar Ribot and Luis Alonso, and the London club, both parties continue to bridge positions with optimism.‘There are still a few details to resolve, but the feelings are positive and there is confidence that the negotiations can continue to progress in the coming days.’Conor Laird – GSFN0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRangers add Ross, option CurveloSCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA - FEBRUARY 18: Pitcher Joe Ross #16 of the Arizona Diamondbacks poses for a portrait during photo day at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on February 18, 2026 in Scottsdale, Arizona. (Photo by Chris Coduto/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of pitcher Joe Ross from AAA Round Rock, the team announced today. To make room for Ross on the active roster, the Rangers optioned Luis Curvelo to AAA Round Rock. To make room for Ross on the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated pitcher Michel Otanez for assignment. The Rangers are in a lengthy stretch of games, and after Luis Curvelo’s one inning, three run outing last night, the Rangers apparently decided that he needed to be replaced by a fresh arm. Thus, we have the addition of veteran righthander Joe Ross.Ross, 33, is the brother of Tyson Ross, who you may remember pitched for the Rangers in their forgettable 2018 season. Ross started the season in the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was designated for assignment, cleared waivers, and ended up pitching for their AAA team for a while. He was released in mid-May and signed with the Rangers, who sent him to Round Rock. After allowing three runs in his first outing of 1.2 IP for Round Rock and a run in his second outing, Ross has had five straight scoreless appearances, totaling 8.2 IP, with six strikeouts against no walks.Curvelo getting sent down was not surprising, though I thought he might be sent down to make room for Alejandro Osuna, if Corey Seager and/or Evan Carter were too banged up to go today, but not so much so that an injured list move was necessary. Osuna left yesterday’s Round Rock game in the fifth inning, presumably due to Carter having to leave the Rangers game yesterday after hurting his oblique. As for Otanez, he was claimed on waivers over the winter, and managed to outlast several other 40 man roster members, but the axe finally swung for him. He’s not pitched well at Round Rock, with 37 Ks against 25 walks in 26.1 IP over 25 games, and a 6.15 ERA. The Rangers will now have to trade, waive or release him.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRobert Lewandowski: Fresh twist in United’s pursuit of Barcelona aceRobert Lewandowski: Fresh twist in United’s pursuit of Barcelona aceManchester United scored the third-most goals in the Premier League last season, but they remain linked with attacking reinforcements this summer. The Red Devils are looking to add more experience to the No. 9 position, despite investing a small fortune in Benjamin Sesko last summer. The Slovenian enjoyed a decent start to life at Old Trafford, registering 12 goals and one assist in 32 appearances across all competitions for the English giants in the 2025/26 season. Benjamin Sesko Stats by Coach At UnitedSource: Transfermarkt. Sesko enjoyed a strong second half of the campaign before his season ended with an unfortunate injury against Liverpool. The Slovenian has displayed signs that he is adapting to the rigours of English football, but there is a belief that United need more cover in the No. 9 position ahead of a busy season. Joshua Zirkzee has struggled to live up to expectations and remains linked with an exit this year. His possible departure could accelerate a move for a new striker, and a previous report relayed by The Peoples Person suggests that Robert Lewandowski has emerged as an option for the job. A long-term United targetLewandowski was one of the finest marksmen in the world in his prime, but he is in the twilight of his career. The Polish striker ended his stay in the Bundesliga in 2022 to move to Barcelona and initially enjoyed an impressive run at Camp Nou. However, the 37 year old displayed signs of regression last season, although he still managed 19 goals and three assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. Nevertheless, the player’s contract expires at the end of this month and he has already announced that he will part ways with the LaLiga champions. Lewandowski’s availability on a free transfer this summer has turned heads at several clubs across the continent. The Pole is a long-term target for United as well, and was previously wanted by Sir Alex Ferguson. The Red Devils now have the opportunity to secure his services for free, but it appears that he is not on their wish list for the summer. United seeking different profileAccording to Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall, Lewandowski does not match the profile of the striker United are looking for this summer. When asked in a Q&A with MEN whether the Red Devils could consider signing the Pole on a two-year deal, Marshall responded: “I can’t see this happening.”“United do want an experienced back-up for Sesko, but someone of a lower profile than Lewandowski, who would still command huge wages and is such a big name he would probably expect to start ahead of the Slovenian.”“He’s a great player and his record last season was still good, but at 37, there is no way he fits into United’s structure or the style of play Michael Carrick wants.”Final ThoughtsUnited have moved away from signing ageing superstars who contribute little to the club’s future, so a move for Lewandowski makes little sense. Instead, the Red Devils could consider bringing former academy graduate Danny Welbeck home if they are seeking to add an experienced hitman to their squad this summer. online pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrentford Lead Race For This Everton Striker Target: What Should Moyes Do?Brentford Lead Race For This Everton Striker Target: What Should Moyes Do?Brentford have moved fast. Very fast. The West London club have actively accelerated their pursuit of Parma striker Mateo Pellegrino, effectively leaving Everton and Newcastle United trailing in their wake.Brentford lead race for Mateo Pellegrino as Everton lag behindAccording to Italian outlet ParmaToday, as relayed by Sport Witness, the South American forward has attracted attention across the Premier League after a rapid rise in the Serie A. It is quite a feat. Pellegrino only arrived at Parma from Velez Sarsfield in January 2025, yet he adapted almost instantly to European football. He did it the hard way, too, grinding out results inside the notoriously rigid, defensive system deployed by manager Carlos Cuesta.A return of 15 goals during his time in Italy, nine of which arrived during the 2025/26 campaign, has cemented his reputation as a proper, dependable finisher. Sport Witness reports that while Newcastle and Everton were busy gathering information and placing the physical frontman on their respective shortlists, Brentford simply bypassed the scouting phase. They initiated direct contact this week.Parma are ready to do business. The Italian side must balance their budget before the transfer window slams shut, meaning a lucrative sale is firmly on the cards. Brentford are currently sitting in the driving seat.David Moyes faces a familiar Everton transfer headachePARMA, ITALY – MAY 24: Mateo Pellegrino of Parma Calcio during the Serie A match between Parma Calcio 1913 and US Sassuolo Calcio at Stadio Ennio Tardini on May 24, 2026 in Parma, Italy. (Photo by Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images)Money is tight at Goodison Park. A recent legal blow ordering a massive £35 million compensation payment to Burnley has severely dented the club’s financial power, ruling out any hope of a direct bidding war.Yet, David Moyes desperately needs firepower. The squad requires a robust, physical presence upfront to support the attacking line if they have any genuine ambitions of challenging for European qualification spots next season. Passive monitoring will not cut it. Moyes cannot afford to sit back and watch domestic rivals steal a march while the pre-season preparation period looms.Snatching Pellegrino from Brentford‘s grasp requires immediate, aggressive negotiation. If the capital club secure a formal agreement with Parma, Everton must pivot instantly to alternative targets. Squad depth is non-negotiable for a gruelling Premier League calendar. Balancing the books whilst adding reliable goal scorers is a massive ask, but it is the exact reality staring Moyes in the face.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

In nearly a decade, Franklin was able to make Penn State a force to be reckoned with, even becoming the favorites for a national championship in some circles, before things went horribly wrong. An awful start to the campaign led to Franklin being fired just a few months into the season, but Virginia Tech soon came calling, and Franklin obliged. Now, the focus is on improving further in the coming campaign and turning his vision into a reality. But not everyone seems to be on board. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Good Is The USMNT? And How Bad Is Paraguay?CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA - MAY 31: Falarin Balogun of United States celebrates after scoring his team's third goal during the international friendly match between United States and Senegal at Bank of America Stadium on May 31, 2026 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe United States men’s national team’s performance in Friday night’s 4-1 was stylish, dominating and even historic. And yet for longtime USMNT fans and new arrivals the same who knew vaguely of the program’s history, there was a common sentiment: Is this real? While 1990s Teri Hatcher would indeed reply in the affirmative, the nagging disbelief is relatable. After all, this was the highest-scoring World Cup final performance in program history and its first three-goal win since the inaugural tournament in 1930.But in an expanded World Cup Field, where the United States also received Pot 1 seeding as a co-host nation and played before a deeply partisan home crowd, the urge to recalibrate and throw water on the moment is also probably wise, given that amazing performances – was well as awful ones – often disguise a teasm’s true quality. And you can also only consider one team’s level if you also have an accurate sense of the other. How Good Is The USMNT?In the basic sense, it’s probably fair to say American fans should be re-adjusting their expectations upward, for two reasons. The first is that Friday night’s performance pretty clearly showed that everything that came before from this group under Mauricio Pochettino was experimentation, with the primary focus of building to these three matches. You don’t attack with the level of clarity and precision the Americans showed without a deliberate sense of your identity that has probably been known within the side for several weeks now, even as Pochettino tinkered around the fringes right up until the final tune-up friendly on June 6.FORBES | By Ian Nicholas QuillenWhat Empty Seats At World Cup In Guadalajara Do And Don’t Tell UsMany of the nerves among American fans in the buildup likely stemmed from performances whose unevenness owed to that inevitable tinkering. And while Pochettino – who has serious European credentials – has always known another job will await him after the USMNT, previous domestically developed head coaches haven’t had the same freedom.U.S. fans are partly to blame for that dynamic. In the previous World Cup cycle, manager Gregg Berhalter enjoyed his height of support in the summer of 2021 prior to the 2022 World Cup, directly because he excelled that year in regional competitions against Mexico and other domestic rivals. His ability to defeat those teams had few ramifications for his true World Cup prospects against diverse global competition. But it was very important in terms of getting the base on board. The second reason fans should probably raise their expectations is because, while it’s hard to identify quantitatively, the vibes surrounding the USMNT in the aftermath of the failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup have skewed considerably more negative than the relative optimism of 1994 through 2014.Some of that has been growing, legitimate recognition among the American public that its talent is still limited relative to the truly elite nations. But part of it is also status related; It has become a mark of knowledge and credibility among some soccer fandom circles to demean the USMNT as an entity in favor of more storied international sides or club teams.Take the comparison that Pochettino himself has embraced, the 1980 Miracle On Ice. Most American soccer fans wouldn’t hesitate in saying that the United States winning the World Cup would clearly be a much bigger shock than the group of literal amateurs upsetting the greatest ice hockey team on watch at the 1980 winter games. The only problem is that oddmakers, who know probability better than most of us, disagree significantly. The Americans were initially installed at roughly 50-to-1 odds to win the 2026 World Cup, depending on the bookmaker. That’s an exponentially better chance than betting analysts say oddsmakers would’ve given the 1980 American ice hockey team (likely in the 1000-to-1 range). It’s also better odds than teams that have actually won major international tournaments, such as the 150-t0-1 Greece side that won the 2004 European Championships. How Bad Is Paraguay? The second part of this equation is that, now matter how strong the United States looked on Friday night, it’s equally true that Paraguay looked just as poor. And it’s probably fair to consider that when evaluating the USMNT and temper excitement a little.Even with the supposedly injured Julio Enciso’s surprise inclusion into manager Gustavo Alfaro’s XI, the Albirroja registered only two shots on target over the course of the match, and completed an astoundingly poor 73.4% of their passes. That lack of attacking bite came even despite a three-goal halftime deficit, when there was very little to lose by sending numbers forward after the break. Those who want to be exceptionally bullish on the Americans will point out that Paraguay qualified out of Conmebol, one of the toughest regions on earth.FORBES | By Ian Nicholas Quillen10 World Cup Managers (Besides Pochettino) With Contracts Up In 2026But the environment of South American qualifying – where two matches occur in a brief 10-day window, with many teams’ stars also facing grueling travel from other continents just to take part – are considerably different than that of a congruous tournament where all teams have a couple weeks of training to build into form. The former is far more favorable to Paraguay’s extraordinarily defensive posture. As a whole, fixtures in South American’s 18-match round robin averaged only 2.03 goals per contest, a rate well below even the most dour World Cups ever played (Italia 1990 - 2.21, South Africa 2010 - 2.27). And Paraguay’s matches were even cagier, teams combining to score only 1.33 goals per match.Put another way, Alfar’s squad had a positive goal differential and averaged less than a goal per game.Paraguay may not be as bad as Friday’s result suggested. But their game model is certainly less pliable to tournaments where teams have time to build attacking chemistry. And once they went behind 2-0, If you’re coming from American football, it was akin to a triple-option running team falling behind by two touchdowns by the second quarter. This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeclerc ‘ashamed’ after latest crash ruins Barcelona GP qualifyingCharles Leclerc said he felt “ashamed” after crashing for the third time in eight days in Barcelona. The Monegasque careered into the barriers at turn four on his first run in Q3 at the Circuit de Catalunya, ending his pursuit of pole position and leaving him 10th at best for Sunday’s race. The 28-year-old hit the barriers in qualifying at his home race last weekend before being knocked out of the race as he trundled nose-first into the wall.He blasted brake issues for that crash and chose to change them on his Ferrari ahead of this weekend to match those of team-mate Lewis Hamilton. But Leclerc, whose Ferrari suffered significant damage, offered no excuses for his latest crash, saying: “There’s no excuses and there’s nothing of that (brakes).“I feel very ashamed, after the last three weekends that have been particularly difficult for me… this weekend, I think everything felt really, really good.“In these days I need to deliver and I feel very ashamed in general.”Leclerc signed a new long-term Ferrari contract ahead of his home race last weekend. He sits fourth in the driver standings this season, 15 points behind Hamilton as Ferrari’s wait for a first win since Mexico City in 2024 goes on.Leclerc added to Sky Sports: “The feeling with the car was amazing and I didn’t deliver. If anything, it’s a lot worse than that; I put it into the wall.“So there’s no excuses. I just felt ashamed. Obviously it’s part of our job to come after a session and speak in front of the cameras but when these things happen, especially after the last few weekends that have been particularly tough to find performance in general, I just feel ashamed.”0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima -

Why not pay tribute to that legacy at the White House?Cris Cyborg, a former UFC champion and MMA legend, and Miesha Tate, a retired UFC star one-time rival of Rousey’s, both shared their views with USA TODAY Sports about the situation."The UFC is one of the best at raising the platform for women’s competition,"’’" Cyborg, 40, said by text message. "“"The UFC pays women champions more than highest paid WNBA players and has constantly pushed for an equal opportunity for both men and women to compete."The White House card doesn’t have one 'undercard' on the event. June 23 is right around the corner and there are a number of different options this front office can look at as they move forward in the process. The Sixers have some needs that have to be addressed as they move forward into the summer. They could always use help on the glass, help off the bench, and need to figure out a way to fortify the second unit. New President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey and his staff will undoubtedly turn over every rock as they look to make the right decisions.A mock draft put together by HoopsHype has the Sixers selecting Houston big man Chris Cenac Jr. who averaged 9.5 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting 48.5% from the floor. He isn't much of a 3-point shooter, but he can do a lot of different things on the floor. He will be a rotation player right away at the next level. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSoftball - Pine Bush falls in marathon AAA state championshipOh what might have been.Pine Bush had a potential title-clinching run erased in the seventh inning and could not push across five more runners in scoring position over the next five frames. The Bushmen ultimately lost to Lancaster 4-3 in 12 innings in the state Class AAA softball championship at Grand Slam Park in Binghamton on Saturday, June 13.Section 9 champion Pine Bush finished at 20-4. Lancaster moved to 16-5, repeating as AAA champs. For a brief shining moment, Pine Bush and its supporters believed the Bushmen had scored what could have been the run that won a state title. Courtney Flynn was standing on second base, the product of a bunt single and stolen base. Two outs passed when Autumn Gove cued a short liner that bounced just in front of the first-base bag and into right field for a double that scored Flynn for a 4-3 lead. But an appeal from the Lancaster coaches, an umpires' conference and reversal - deeming the ball foul - negated the hit - Gove ultimately struck out, and the game plodded on well into extra innings.Pine Bush would ultimately put five runners into scoring position in extras but could not produce the tie-breaking run. Lancaster, too, was denied a title-clinching run in the bottom of the seventh but Pine Bush right fielder Silvana Zamonsky gunned down Ava Konieczny trying to score on sacrifice fly, catcher Payton Croce applying the tag.Pine Bush's luck ran out in the twelfth. Pitcher Avery Ogden hit Konieczny in the elbow - the umpires, again, conferred whether the No. 10 batter had leaned into the pitch but deemed she hadn't. Koniecczny stole second and took third on a passed ball. Leadoff righty hitter Abigail Dimino worked the count to 2-2 and then used an inside-out swing to line a ball toward the right side - the ball eluded the reach of right-handed first baseman Emma Boffalo, and Konieczny's speed provided Zamonsky with no opportunity to reach home in time.PINE BUSH WINS FRIDAY SEMIFINAL: Softball - Pine Bush rallies late for state AAA semifinal victorykmcmillan@th-record.comX / Twitter: @KenMcMillanTHRThis article originally appeared on Times Herald-Record: Pine Bush softball falls in marathon AAA state championship0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.404MEDIA.COScientists Discover Vast Ancient ‘Necropolis’ Teeming With Strange New CreaturesWelcome back to the Abstract! Here are the studies this week that died in the deep, let nature call, tossed a galactic salad, and became interstellar voyeurs.First, there’s a whale necropolis under the sea that is packed with ancient carcasses and teeming with new species. Then: a bygone world preserved in poop, the fruits of the universe’s labor, and a zoom lens for distant planets. As always, for more of my work, check out my book First Contact: The Story of Our Obsession with Aliens, or subscribe to my personal newsletter the BeX Files. A visit to the cetacean cemeteryPeng, Xiaotong; Zhou, Peng; Song, Xikun; Bianucci, Giovanni; Du. Mengran et al. “A 5.3-million-year-old deep-sea whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone.” Nature.Scientists have discovered an unprecedented underwater “necropolis” that contains the remains of hundreds of whales that died over the past five million years, scattered across 745 miles.During dives in a deep sea submersible, researchers spotted whale bones submerged under more than four miles of the Diamantina Zone in the Indian Ocean, making this site the geographically largest, deepest, and oldest whale necropolis ever found. The graveyard is also teeming with species that may be “new to science” and subsist on these fortuitous “whale falls,” according to a new study.“The discovery of whale-fall communities in the Diamantina Zone at depths exceeding 6,700 meters establishes one of the deepest known whale-fall ecosystems in the ocean, extending the known depth range of such habitats by more than 2,500 meters,” said researchers co-led by Xiaotong Peng of China’s Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering.“This area has a deep and extensive accumulation comprising five modern natural whale-fall communities and 476 fossil cetaceans recorded,” the team said.Peng and his colleagues first spotted the necropolis during dives in early 2023 using the Fendouzhe submersible, which is capable of bringing crews to depths of nearly seven miles. The team quickly realized they had tapped into a scientific motherlode, complete with an immense fossil archive of extinct animals—mostly deep-diving beaked whales—along with recent whale falls that still support thriving ecosystems of crustaceans, molluscs, worms, and microbes.“Bone-eating worms, gastropods, vesicomyid bivalves and brittle stars dominate the megafauna (more than several centimetres in size), reaching local densities up to 2,840 individuals per square metre,” the team said. “Most recovered taxa may be new to science.”As for why this vast necropolis formed, beaked whales may be attracted to these deep waters due to the abundance of prey sources, such as squid and fish. Some might accidentally dive so deep that they experience decompression sickness or fatal exhaustion, becoming bonus bodies for seafloor ecosystems. The sinking carcasses are then funnelled into the Diamantina Zone because of its V-shaped topography, serving up a figurative feast for scientists (and a literal one for marine biota).Various remains in the necropolis. Image: IDSSE“As beaked whales are known primarily from rare strandings, their abundance, distribution and ecology remain poorly understood overall,” Peng and his colleagues concluded. “Our discovery of an accumulation of skeletal remains…provides an unparalleled source of information on these largely enigmatic cetaceans.”Mariners have long dreaded ending up in Davy Jones’ locker, the proverbial resting ground of drowned sailors. It turns out that whales have a whole locker room down in the deep, where the bodies of countless leviathans blossom into fleeting hotspots of life.In other news…Bathroom blast from the past Murchie, Tyler J. et al. “Ground squirrel coprolites preserve complex archives of ancient environmental DNA over 700,000 years.” Nature Communications. The Klondike region of Canada’s Yukon territory is famous for the 19th-century gold rush that led hopeful prospectors to riches, ruin, and early graves. But now, scientists have found a very different type of valuable nugget in Klondike soil—ancient squirrel poops made by ancient squirrel bums as early as 700,000 years ago.Scientists sequenced ancient environmental DNA (aeDNA) from these permafrosted scats, thereby opening up a poopy portal into the past. The fossilized feces, known as coprolites, contained genetic traces of mammoth, saber-tooth cat, horse, and bison, suggesting that these Ice Age rodents may have gnawed on the corpses of much larger megafauna. The coprolites also preserved DNA from hundreds of plant species, several insects, and a bevy of microbial and fungal strains. “The diversity and abundance of aeDNA recovered from the permafrost preserved, ground squirrel coprolites presented here underscores the immense value of Arctic rodent middens as repositories of Quaternary ecosystems,” said researchers led by Tyler J. Murchie of the Hakai Institute and McMaster University. “The ecological and evolutionary power of coprolites would appear to exceed that of both bone and sediment.”As a bonus, the team refers to the rodent behind each coprolite as the “defecator,” in case anyone is seeking inspiration for a disgusting superhero concept. Eat your galactic green peas Gupta, Maitrayee et al. “Blueberry and Green Pea galaxies live in low-density environments.” Astronomy & Astrophysics. The fruits of summer gardens are beginning to ripen here on Earth, but what about the pea patches and berry bushes of outer space? In a new study, astronomers examine a sampling of so-called “Green Pea” and “Blueberry” galaxies, which are small and compact systems that have extremely high star formation (“starburst”) rates. Images of blueberry galaxies. Image: SDSS and Yang et al.Named for their green and blue hues, these starry objects are thought by some scientists to be similar to the first galaxies that lit up the universe during the epoch of reionization more than 13 billion years ago, making them useful analogues of primordial galactic evolution.“Within the diverse tapestry of galaxy populations, Green Pea and Blueberry galaxies represent particularly intriguing classes,” said researchers led by Maitrayee Gupta of the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The galaxies “present an opportunity to gain a unique perspective” on the processes “driving cosmic reionisation,” the team added. To that end, Gupta and her colleagues observed a selection of these galaxies and found that they “predominantly reside in isolated, low-density environments” which means that their intense starbursts are not driven by interactions with galactic neighbors, such as mergers. Instead, the team concluded that these recent starbursts are driven by internal processes, “reinforcing their role as nearby analogues of young, low-mass galaxies in the early Universe.”If you’d like a more substantive galactic meal than peas and blueberries, may I recommend the Fried Egg Galaxy or the Hamburger Galaxy? Cap it off with a Milky Way for dessert. Journey to the magic spyglass in spacePalos, Mario F. et al. “Curved Space Telescope: E-sail concept to the solar gravitational lens focal region.” Advances in Space Research. There is a sweet spot in the outer wilds of the solar system, about 650 times the distance between Earth and the Sun, where it is theoretically possible to peer across interstellar space and spot surface features of exoplanets—including continents, oceans, or perhaps signs of life. This phenomenon, known as the solar gravitational lens, is caused by the Sun’s gravity warping light from distant sources, essentially making it a stellar magnifying glass. It could be an incredible observational tool, but schlepping all the way out into the solar sticks is a huge challenge that has inspired a host of futuristic spaceflight concepts. Concept art of an exoplanet observed through the solar gravitational lens. Image: Slava Turyshev/NASANow, scientists have proposed sending “an E-sail propelled spacecraft” called the Curved Space Telescope (CST) powered by the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emitted by the Sun. The probe would cruise through the solar system by deploying metallic tethers that tap into the solar wind and generate thrust from repulsion effects with its particles.“One of the most interesting scientific objectives for a mission like CST would be the search for proof of extraterrestrial life,” said researchers led by Mario F. Palos of the University of Tartu. The team added that risky maneuvers, like slingshotting close to the Sun, would not be necessary for this mission, unlike previous proposals along these lines.E-sails have never been tested in space and it’s anyone’s guess whether we’ll ever be able to send a mission to this interesting frontier. Still, it’s amazing to think about capturing close-ups of aliens on faraway exoplanets through a starry lens. Thanks for reading! See you next week.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRohit Sharma surpasses Mohinder Amarnath, becomes oldest male cricketer to ...Former India captain Rohit Sharma added another record to his career on Saturday, becoming the oldest male cricketer to play a One-Day International (ODI) for India.Rohit achieved the milestone during the rain-shortened first ODI against Afghanistan at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. At 39 years and 75 days, he went past former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath, who was 39 years and 36 days old when he played his last ODI for India in 1989.The record is limited to men's cricket. Overall, the oldest Indian to play an ODI remains former India women's fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, who played her final ODI against England at Lord's in 2022 at the age of 39 years and 303 days. No Indian cricketer has represented the country in ODI cricket after turning 40.Rain delayed the start of the match by more than four hours. The game, originally scheduled to begin at 1:30pm, eventually started at 5:45 PM and was reduced to 25 overs per side. The 39-year-old is also expected to be part of India's ODI World Cup campaign next year. If he plays in the tournament, Rohit could become the first Indian cricketer to feature in ODI cricket after the age of 40.In the match, India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first against Afghanistan. Persistent rain delayed the toss before officials decided on a 25-overs-per-side contest. The ongoing series is the first bilateral ODI series between India and Afghanistan. The second ODI will be played in Lucknow on June 17, while Chennai will host the final match on June 20.Before this series, the two teams had met only in ODI World Cups and Asia Cups. India had won three of their four meetings, while the other match ended in a tie.India entered the match having lost three of their previous five ODIs, while Afghanistan came into the series on the back of four consecutive ODI victories. Last week, India defeated Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in a one-off Test.India handed ODI debuts to left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey and fast bowler Gurnoor Brar. While Rohit returned to the international setup, Virat Kohli was unavailable because of a hamstring injury.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM48-ball mayhem! Rahmanullah Gurbaz rewrites history with ton vs IndiaRahmanullah Gurbaz rewrote the record books with a breathtaking 48-ball century against India in the rain-shortened first ODI at Dharamsala. The hundred was the fastest ever by an Afghanistan batter in ODI cricket, surpassing all previous Afghan records. It was also the quickest century of Gurbaz's ODI career, his ninth overall in the format, and the fastest ODI hundred ever recorded in an India-Afghanistan encounter.Gurbaz eventually departed for a sensational 102 off 51 balls, an innings packed with power and aggression. He struck eight fours and eight sixes before Nitish Kumar Reddy ended his remarkable stay at the crease. The right-hander had already made headlines earlier in the innings when he raced to a half-century in just 25 balls. That effort became the second-fastest ODI fifty by an Afghanistan batter, behind only Mohammad Nabi's 24-ball fifty against Sri Lanka in Lahore in 2023. Mujeeb Ur Rahman's 26-ball fifty against Pakistan in Colombo completes the top three.Best conversion rate from 50s to 100s in ODIs56.25 - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (9 hundreds)43.48 - Calum MacLeod (10 hundreds)42.86 - Daryl Mitchell (9 hundreds)41.82 - Quinton de Kock (23 hundreds)41.22 - Virat Kohli (54 hundreds)(min. 7 hundreds)Fastest ODI fifties for Afghanistan (by balls faced):24 balls - Mohammad Nabi vs Sri Lanka, Lahore, 202325 balls - Rahmanullah Gurbaz vs India, Dharamsala, 202626 balls - Mujeeb Ur Rahman vs Pakistan, Colombo, 2023Gurbaz's fireworks also helped Afghanistan register only their second century partnership against India in ODI cricket. The previous three-figure stand came during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Delhi, when Azmatullah Omarzai and Hashmatullah Shahidi added 121 runs. His stunning innings came in a match that had already seen India hand ODI debuts to left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Harsh Dubey and fast bowler Gurnoor Brar. With rain reducing the contest to 25 overs per side, Gurbaz made full use of the shortened format, taking the attack to the Indian bowlers from the outset and producing one of the most destructive innings by an Afghanistan batter against India.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPiastri 'pretty mind-blown' by overturned penaltyWith Pierre Gasly's third place reinstated, Oscar Piastri moves back level on 58 points with McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in the drivers' championship [Getty Images]McLaren's Oscar Piastri said he was "pretty mind-blown" about the decision to overturn Pierre Gasly's penalty for pit-lane speeding in the Monaco Grand Prix.Gasly was returned to third place in the race after initially being dropped to seventh following a successful appeal by his Alpine team. But the stewards' verdict revealed an error with measuring the pit-lane speed limit. This affected a number of other drivers, who were also penalised."I'm pretty mind-blown by the decision," Piastri said, "because how you can reverse a decision that was ultimately wrong, but when other people have been penalised for the same thing and served a penalty in the race, how you can then change one penalty, knowing that probably five or six other races have been impacted by that, is astonishing."What happened and how?George Russell was given a drive-through penalty for failing to properly serve his pit-lane speeding penalty [Getty Images]Gasly and Piastri were two of five drivers penalised for breaking the pit-lane speed limit. The others were Mercedes' George Russell, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Gasly's team-mate Franco Colapinto. All but one of the penalties was for going 0.1km/h over the speed limit; one of Gasly's was for a 0.4km/h transgression.Russell ended up being demoted to 12th place from third after picking up a drive-through penalty, a punishment for not correctly serving his speeding punishment at a pit stop. That cost him 15 points in his title fight with team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who won the race. The Briton urged stewards during a red-flag period not to impose the drive-through and deal with it after the race because there was obviously something odd going on, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.Ferrari managed to avoid Hamilton suffering for his penalty as it was served during a safety-car period. Piastri lost at least one place - to Gasly - when he served his. Colapinto was in any case out of the points. The stewards' verdict in Alpine's 'right of review' case into Gasly's penalty acknowledged that the pit lane had been measured as being longer than it was possible to drive it.As the limit is measured by the time it takes for drivers to travel a certain distance, it incorrectly calculated drivers as speeding when in fact none had exceeded the 60km/h limit. The report also said that after the third penalty was awarded in the race, the stewards asked officials whether something unusual was going on, and were told nothing was. This was despite the issue having been raised with governing body the FIA during the weekend by teams. The decision to expunge Gasly's penalty demoted Red Bull's Isack Hadjar from the podium, and Piastri from fourth to fifth. What are people saying?George Russell headed to stewards' room during the red-flag period at last weekend's Monaco Grand Prix to ask if they could review his penalties after the race [EPA]Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren have all given notice of an intention to appeal against the Gasly decision.Piastri added: "I've obviously lost a position, but you can only imagine how George is feeling - so I could not believe my eyes."Yes, I lost the position to Pierre because I served the penalty, so technically I should be P3. But then, technically George should be P3, and the whole thing is now a mess."[It's] quite the predicament they've got themselves into, and I don't know how you get yourself out of that one, because now the precedent is 'you don't serve the penalty, you take it to court, you wait probably a few months to decide the race', and who the hell wants to go racing like that?"'Perplexed' is the word I would use."Before you could kind of say: 'Bad luck, it was wrong, but it was wrong for everybody, and everyone was treated the same.'"Now it's very much how you judge that. I don't think the race result will be cancelled, but yes, it's quite the situation that's unfolded."Gasly said: "What I'm going to say is that it should not be right to penalise me for something that we haven't done just because others got penalised."If a potential mistake was done one time, two times, three times, it's not a reason to do it a fourth time. So I think just to draw the line here."An F1 statement said: "We measured the relevant areas in the pit lane identically to the 2025 event and followed procedures in the usual way. "However, the process has identified a measurement discrepancy. Like everyone in the sport we strive for the best results and, as always, any improvements or refinements that are identified as being required in light of this situation will be implemented."Fight is on for Hamilton as he and Russell reset successfullyRussell beats Hamilton to Barcelona poleWhat's going to happen next?Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said the team had consulted lawyers about their situation and they are in conversations with the FIA on the matter.Wolff said: "We were on the phone with our lawyers to look at what can we do for George. A drive-through, if it didn't happen at the end, is equivalent of 20 seconds' race time. What would 20 seconds race time have meant for his result?"Do we think that we realistically have a position, a chance of reverting the result? I don't think so, but we definitely have to give it a go if we see that there is a millimetre of chance to do so and bring him back to whatever it was before."McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said it was "a very complex case and we do feel we should consider appealing".The situation raises the possibility that Russell could lose the championship as a consequence of an error by race officials. But there is already precedent for that happening. In Abu Dhabi in 2021, race director Michael Masi incorrectly applied the rules during a safety-car period at the end of the race, and his actions led directly to Lewis Hamilton being overtaken on the last lap by Max Verstappen, and the championship passing from the Briton to the Dutchman. At that time, Mercedes challenged the decision but their protest was rejected. There were questions about how the FIA conducted that scenario on that day, especially as it was later admitted that Masi had committed a "human error" and was sacked. But stewards realised there was nothing within the rules that they could do to alter the result. In this case, there seems to have been a series of failures of communication within the FIA and between the FIA and the official timekeepers provided by commercial rights holder F1.Teams raised the issue of the pit-lane speed limit during the weekend and their comments were ignored. Those conversations were, it seems, not passed to the stewards, nor to the timekeepers. And extraordinarily, when stewards asked the race director during the race whether there were any concerns about the measurement of the pit-lane limit, they were told there were not, even though there were some in the FIA who were aware of concerns there might be.The situation also raises issues about how teams react to in-race penalties in the future. Many - such as pit-lane speed limits - cannot be appealed against by regulation. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDodgers Could Target All-Star on Trade Block at DeadlineThe Los Angeles Dodgers are heavily linked to superstar Tarik Skubal as the Tigers player they can target if Detroit becomes a seller, but someone else could be an option as well. The MLB world naturally will always link the Dodgers to the biggest name, and Skubal is the headliner in his trade rumor mill.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation)However, if the Dodgers decided to leave their biggest strength on the roster untouched, second baseman Gleyber Torres could be an option to make the infield younger.Torres is on a one-year deal, his $22 million qualifying offer, with no more team control beyond this year; he is in a similar boat to Skubal, though he is theoretically more retainable due to his value in free agency being noticeably lower than the two-time Cy Young winner.May 8, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers Executive Vice President and General Manager Brandon Gomes, left, talks with manager Dave Roberts (30) before the game against the Atlanta Braves at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesTorres’ availability is not theoretical; if the Tigers continue to swim well below .500, he could be part of a fire sale, according to insider Jeff Passan. The Tigers, entering Saturday’s slate of games, are 29-41 and 5.5 games back on an American League Wild Card berth. They are getting Skubal back after he missed a month due to shoulder surgery, and they have won seven of their last 10 games. View this post on InstagramA post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation)If their upturn keeps going, they may hold all of their expiring trade chips in the hopes of a late-season push.If things don’t keep improving, Torres and Skubal will have to enter the picture, and while the pitcher has been talked about at nauseym, let’s break down what Torres could offer to an infield that could use some juice. How would Gleyber Torres fit on the Dodgers?Jun 2, 2026; St. Petersburg, Florida, USA; Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (25) fields a ground ball in the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Mandatory Credit: Jonathan Dyer-Imagn ImagesTo be clear: there is no tangible report of the Dodgers eyeing Torres, but when looking at the MLB landscape, he could be an option. Torres would actually fit like a glove — he is known for his eye and patience at the plate. While his power is down compared to his usual figures, he has a 123 wRC+ and is hitting .276, his best average since 2019. His second base play is solid as well, and his bat would offer an upgrade on paper to Tommy Edman, who can move into more of an outright utility role. He works many long at-bats, and if he is right, his presence is annoying to any pitcher in the postseason, as Torres will drive up any pitch count. Also, he would be put into an optimal spot in a lineup with so many different weapons and approaches. Why would the Dodgers not trade for Torres? There are two key reasons — first, $22 million is a lot to add to the payroll. If the Tigers could take on part of that to help the Dodgers’ salary sheet, it would increase the odds of a deal, but it might require a slightly larger prospect package. Also, it essentially waves the white flag on Hyeseong Kim and Alex Freeland playing a key role this year unless there are injuries. The organization is high on both of them, and it is hard to see them putting another cog into an infield jam with so many players that they like. Also, regarding the regular-season roster size, it would mean moving on from one of Alex Call, Miguel Rojas, or Kike Hernandez, assuming all are healthy at this point, which will certainly not happen in either Rojas’ or Hernandez’s case. For this reason, a trade for Torres likely only happens if injury requires it, but if that injury does come to the position player group, he will be at the top of any list.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKirk Herbstreit: Brendan Sorsby injunction sets ‘sickening’ precedent for college footballCredit: Lubbock Avalanche-Journal; The Dan Patrick ShowThe injunction allowing quarterback Brendan Sorsby to play for Texas Tech this fall after serving a two-game suspension highlights the growing role the court system plays in decisions about eligibility and rules in college football, one that ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit worries could set a “sickening” precedent for the sport. While Sorsby has openly admitted to a gambling problem and the NCAA banned him as a result, a judge in northwest Texas effectively superseded all of that to reinstate Sorsby anyway, citing the harm that would be done if he could not play football. In an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show on Friday, Herbstreit expressed concern that the sport’s rules are becoming easier to manipulate than ever.“It’s sickening that if you don’t hear what you like, you can just go to your local judge and find the answer that you want,” he said. “I just don’t know where this ends. If this is where we are right now, pretty much you can do whatever the hell you want to do in this sport, and if anybody says anything, just find a local judge to tell you the answer you want to get.”Like his Fox Sports counterpart, Joel Klatt, Herbstreit questioned the teeth any NCAA ruling can have after the Sorsby ruling and others, such as a successful lawsuit by Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss that allowed him to play a sixth season of college football despite the NCAA declaring him ineligible.Worse yet, Herbstreit said, the fact that these cases are heard in local courts creates a perception that judges are biased.“I think the biggest thing for me, and I think for all of us that follow college football, is who’s the governing body over the sport, and what power does that governing body have, if any?” Herbstreit explained. “The NCAA, when they found out about this, they ruled him ineligible. And like we’ve seen in many other cases, when somebody finds out that the NCAA didn’t give them the answer they want, they go, ‘OK, no problem. We’re just going to go to our local jurisdiction, local judge, and finds out if we can make this happen.'”Despite Texas Tech’s argument that it is helping Sorsby by bringing him back into the football program, Herbstreit sees a system that cares little for players. As the College GameDay panelist explained Friday, college football now has schools “bribing” players by turning NIL into pay-for-play, ignoring the material lessons that team collegiate sports are supposed to provide, and then giving these players a free-for-all in the legal system to maneuver through their careers however they want.“We’re not preparing these kids for real life,” he said. “I think we’re all OK with them making money, but I think the concern is where this is heading five years from now, ten years from now, with, I think, there’s going to be a lot of issues with these guys when that bag doesn’t keep coming, and they have to go get a job. And what do you do now?”The post Kirk Herbstreit: Brendan Sorsby injunction sets ‘sickening’ precedent for college football appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat World Cup? New York gripped by Knicks frenzyThe MetLife stadium, located in neighboring New Jersey but serving New York, will host its first fixture of the global soccer showcase Saturday when Brazil entertain Morocco (ANGELA WEISS)It was Knicks vs. the World Cup in New York on Saturday, and only one winner. The city was at a fever pitch as the hometown basketball team sat on the brink of a NBA Championship win -- pushing the Brazil vs. Morocco game deep into the shadows. The World Cup "is going to be fun... but right now, I'm a New Yorker, so we're going for the Knicks, basketball! Let's take this win. And after that, we can think about the World Cup," said actor Robert Chen, 32, next to the Brooklyn bridge FIFA fan zone. The MetLife stadium, located in neighboring New Jersey but serving Big Apple-based World Cup fans, faced a major test of its rail link to Manhattan."For those traveling throughout Manhattan, prepare for gridlock in Midtown," Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned Saturday, telling MetLife-bound fans to allow four to five hours for the journey.Morten Vold, 37, wore a Brazil jersey as he headed to the stadium and praised the organization at the city's bustling Penn station where Morocco, Brazil and Knicks fans rubbed shoulders with dozens of national guard troops and police reinforcements."I previously looked up where to go and saw a video about it in the transit app," said Vold, from Bergen, Norway, who insisted he would cheer his home team after Saturday's match. But he called the $98 price for a roundtrip ticket "insane compared to what it costs normally."Away from the station, New York was a sea of Knicks orange as the team closed in on what will be their first title in 53 years if they win the clash with the San Antonio Spurs being played away in Texas."Everyone is kind of craving this victory, and it's excitement in the air... it's contagious," said Knicks fan and Queens-based street cart vendor Angel Diaz, 42."We're gonna have to take one thing at a time, and we're gonna do the Knicks first, and then we go back to the World Cup," added Diaz, who said the city would be "out of control" if the Knicks seal the deal.Hundreds of thousands of fans were expected to descend on central New York for remote viewing of the fifth game of the NBA Finals series with the Knicks leading the San Antonio Spurs 3-1.Police turned out in force for the first four games, both home and away, and officers were expected to flood Manhattan to deter the vandalism that marred earlier fixtures.Soaring temperatures and the threat of thunderstorms could also put a dampener on festivities.- Knicks 'over-shining' -In an industrial section of Brooklyn, the manager of a Socceroof indoor five-a-side arena, 24-year-old Lucas Matuszewski, said that "obviously the Knicks, as they should, are over-shining" the World Cup. "Basketball is so beloved in the city of New York."Scotland fan Graeme Buckingham, 53, a fisherman from Banff, described the level of football fever as "poor" in New York, while nearby a hawker sold Knicks championship T-shirts outside the Wall Street stock exchange."I'd expected probably a bit more, a bit more fans. But as you see, it's basketball. They're not really into their soccer, are they?" he said as he prepared to travel to Boston with the Tartan Army for Scotland's inaugural match against Haiti. "Looking at New York, there was a sign there outside a pub today, Mexico v. South Africa -- Champions' League. They didn't even know the tournament."But there were signs that businesses were bracing for a delayed onset of football mania.Vanessa Whalen, the owner of the Black Bull pub in Brooklyn, said "I do think it's going to get hectic and crazy without a doubt, and especially at this pub, because we're a football pub." The convergence of hundreds of thousands of Knicks fans with football fans risked transport chaos. While Madison Square Garden is not hosting Saturday's clash, there will be a viewing party for 3,000 fans outside the storied venue that sits directly above Penn Station. The two games also clash with festivities around the Puerto Rican Day parade on Sunday, and a concert at MSG.gw/ksb0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRed Sox Reveal Roman Anthony Has Torn Ligament In Throwing HandRed Sox Reveal Roman Anthony Has Torn Ligament In Throwing Hand originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Boston Red Sox fans have grown incredibly frustrated with the vagueness with which star outfielder Roman Anthony's injury has been handled. It has been more than 40 days since he was placed on the injured list with a right wrist injury. In that time, Anthony has already missed 32 games with no return in sight.NESN reporter Adam Pellerin provided an injury update on Anthony before Game 2 of Boston's series against the visiting Texas Rangers. "There have been more questions than answers in terms of the injury prognosis," Pellerin said. "It's been confirmed that it is a small tear of a ligament in his right ring finger."Anthony himself told reporters that, despite rumors of delays throughout his rehab, he is on pace to meet the average return timetable. Whether there have been setbacks or not, the unusually long duration of the 22-year-old's injury has been rubbing fans the wrong way. Pellerin went on to say that, despite the fact that we now know what the injury is, fans really do not know much more. "There is no word on any additional imaging," Pellerin added. "Of course, there is no timetable for his return, no word if there will be another injection of the cortisone shots, and surgery has not been mentioned at this point. "So we continue to watch and wait to see what Roman Anthony's status is moving forward.".@adampellerin has the latest on Roman Anthony's injury ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/ySW8NHAtrO— NESN (@NESN) June 13, 2026More MLB: Red Sox Will Get Contributor Back Soon, Rehab Assignment In Portland0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMManchester United Are Close To Signing This West Ham United Talent: Decent Signing For Carrick?Manchester United Are Close To Signing This West Ham United Talent: Decent Signing For Carrick? In a recent report, Fichajes revealed that Manchester United are close to signing West Ham United talent Mateus Fernandes. It has been mentioned that the Red Devils are eyeing a €92m move to sign the Portuguese talent this summer.Fernandes’ Impressive Form In English FootballFernandes managed to catch the eye at times with his performances at the centre of West Ham’s midfield last season. However, he failed to help them avoid relegation from the Premier League. The 21-year-old participated in 38 matches for the Hammers in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net four times and securing four assists in the process across multiple competitions. The Portuguese sensation is currently one of the most gifted midfielders in the Premier League. Therefore, Man United would do well to get a deal done for him later this year. His current contract at the London Stadium will expire in the summer of 2030, which could make it tough for the Red Devils to land him on the cheap in this transfer window.LONDON, ENGLAND – MAY 24: Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United applauds the fans after the Premier League match between West Ham United and Leeds United at the London Stadium on May 24, 2026 in London, England. (Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty Images)Will Fernandes Be A Good Signing For Manchester United Boss Michael Carrick?Fernandes doesn’t mind working hard for his team defensively when needed. He can shoot the ball with venom from long range and has got the eye to play some decisive passes in and around the opponent’s penalty area. The Portuguese sensation can even contribute by scoring and creating a handful of crucial goals for his team. Fernandes is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as a defensive midfielder or as an attacking midfielder if required. He is already quite familiar with the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at the Mancunian club.We can expect Fernandes to improve the quality of Man United head coach Michael Carrick’s midfield in the long run. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at Old Trafford in the coming seasons. At 21, Fernandes has got a bright future ahead of him and would be a decent signing for the Red Devils to pull off in this summer transfer window. He will also help Man United compete across all fronts over the next decade.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 8 Views 0 Anteprima
