Pocono Cup Series Starting Lineup: Where Every Driver Will Start Sunday
The NASCAR Cup Series starting lineup is set for Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway, and Denny Hamlin will lead the field to green.Hamlin won the pole for the Great American Getaway 400 presented by VisitPA.com, putting the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on the front row at one of his best tracks. Kyle Larson will start second, giving Sunday’s race a heavyweight front row at the Tricky Triangle.Pocono qualifying matters. The 2.5-mile track is unlike anything else on the NASCAR schedule, with three distinct corners and long straightaways that force teams to compromise on setup. Clean air, track position and strategy can all swing the race quickly.Sunday’s race is also scheduled to begin earlier than originally planned. NASCAR moved the start time to 1 p.m. ET due to potential weather concerns later in the afternoon.Pocono Cup Series Starting LineupDenny HamlinKyle LarsonDaniel SuárezTy GibbsChase BriscoeChris BuescherErik JonesJohn Hunter NemechekWilliam ByronRyan BlaneyJoey LoganoAlex BowmanMichael McDowellAustin HillCole CusterTyler ReddickAustin CindricZane SmithAJ AllmendingerJosh BerryRicky Stenhouse Jr.Christopher BellChase ElliottRoss ChastainRiley HerbstCarson HocevarTy DillonConnor ZilischTodd GillilandNoah GragsonShane van GisbergenAustin DillonCody WareDaniel DyeRyan PreeceCasey MearsBrad KeselowskiBubba WallaceDenny Hamlin Starts Up Front at One of His Best TracksHamlin has long been one of the drivers to beat at Pocono, and Saturday’s qualifying run gave him another strong starting point at the Pennsylvania track.Starting first gives Hamlin an immediate chance to control the opening stage, but Larson will line up alongside him with plenty of speed of his own. Behind them, Suárez, Gibbs, Briscoe and Buescher all qualified inside the top six, setting up an intriguing mix of contenders near the front.Several playoff-caliber drivers will have more work to do. Christopher Bell starts 22nd, Chase Elliott starts 23rd, Ross Chastain starts 24th and Bubba Wallace starts 38th.Weather Could Still Shape Sunday’s RaceThe lineup is only part of the story entering race day.NASCAR moved Sunday’s start time up to 1 p.m. ET because of potential rain and thunderstorms later in the day. That gives officials a larger window to complete the 160-lap race, but teams will still have to manage strategy carefully if weather becomes a factor. At Pocono, races can already come down to fuel mileage, pit timing and track position. With weather now part of the equation, Sunday’s race could become even more unpredictable.

Jett Lawrence wins Thunder Valley 450 Moto 1 ahead of Lucas Coenen
LAKEWOOD, Colorado: Jett Lawrence survived intense competition from Hunter Lawrence and Haiden Deegan for most of Moto 1 before gaining an advantage with a handful of laps remaining. He finished more than five seconds ahead of Lucas Coenen, who was making his Pro Motocross debut.Moto 1 at Thunder Valley Motocross Park was the most competitive contests seen in several seasons as Jett earned the holeshot, Hunter slipped into his brother's tow, and Deegan mounted multiple charges for the victory after passing four riders in the first two laps.Jett was never given a moment to rest as Deegan closed to within his back wheel repeatedly. Part of the reason for his speed, however, was a line choice that may have been out of bounds.During one of those pressure-filled moments, Deegan slid out and crashed from second on Lap 8. He crashed again later during that lap and handed third to Lucas Coenen, who was making his debut in the Pro Motocross series.Hunter closed the gap in the middle stage of the race, but Jett found another gear and pulled a two-second gap with four minutes remaining. Soon after, Hunter crashed and handed second to Coenen.Hunter fell into the grip of Deegan as they raced for the final spot on the podium.Coenen started the race seventh and persistently marched forward to mount a late-race challenge on Jett.Deegan crossed under the checkered flag in fourth, but his race line was under review by the American Motorcycle Association (AMA).Jorge Prado rounded out the top five.Moto 1 results

Judge orders Trump administration to restore National Park changes at sites that ‘disparaged’ US
President Donald Trump walks to board his limousine at the North Portico of the White House, Saturday, June 13, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)2026-06-13T14:08:46Z A federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to restore sites changed under an executive order calling for the nation’s museums, parks and landmarks to not display elements that “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living.”The preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley in Massachusetts also orders a pause on any additional changes, writing that the plaintiffs have shown that these efforts are meant “to rewrite the Nation’s history with a white-out pen.”“History cannot be faithfully told while excluding the experiences of communities whose contributions, struggles, and achievements form an important part of our Nation’s story,” the judge wrote. The Trump administration must also provide a status report every week describing the progress they’ve made with these changes, the judge wrote.“Under the guise of promoting American dignity, this Administration seeks to share a limited history by ordering the removal of all signs, displays, and interpretive exhibits at National Parks that do not align with its preferred narrative, thereby telling half-truths,” Kelley wrote. The order comes in response to a February lawsuit filed by conservation and historical organizations over National Park Service policies that the groups say have forced park service staff to remove or censor dozens of exhibits that share factually accurate and relevant U.S. history and scientific knowledge, including about slavery and climate change. Many of the changes were at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park, where the administration removed exhibits on the lives of nine people enslaved at the site in the 1790s under George Washington, the first U.S. president. Other changes included removing a sign at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Arizona describing basalt bubbles because it had an image of a visitor holding a Pride flag while films on labor history were removed from the Lowell National Historical Park in Massachusetts. Read More President Donald Trump signed the executive order “restoring truth and sanity to American history” at the nation’s museums, parks and landmarks last year. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum later directed removal of “improper partisan ideology” from museums, monuments, landmarks and other public exhibits under federal control. An email seeking comment from the Interior Department was sent Saturday. Alan Spears, senior director for cultural resources for the National Parks Conservation Association, one of the organizations that brought the lawsuit, said the ruling will help protect national parks from the administration’s effort “to erase history and science at these one-of-a-kind places.”“National parks belong to the American people and censorship of any kind goes against the values these places represent,” he said.Bill Wade, executive director for the Association of National Park Rangers, another organization that brought the lawsuit, said this is especially good news for National Parks employees who “have prided themselves for being able to provide truthful, accurate and unbiased information.”

A woman’s hypothermia death in Pittsburgh after her release from ICE custody is ruled a homicide
This photo provided by the Michel Family shows Daphy Michel, an asylum seeker from Haiti who died March 2, 2026 in Pittsburgh, in the wake of her release from federal custody. (Michel Family via AP)2026-06-13T18:54:35Z A medical examiner has ruled the death of a Haitian asylum seeker after being released from federal custody a homicide. An attorney representing her family said he expects her relatives to sue Immigration and Customs Enforcement in connection with her death.Daphy Michel, 31, died March 2. She was found at a bus shelter. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office found her cause of death to be hypothermia and ruled the manner a homicide, “indicating the death was caused by the actions of another individual” and should not be interpreted as a declaration of criminal guilt, the office said in a statement. The office released its findings Friday.Michel was a native of Haiti who was seeking asylum in the U.S. after arriving at the southern border in 2022, said Joseph Patrick Murphy, her family’s attorney. She was granted humanitarian parole based on urgent humanitarian need, but she did not live to see a hearing scheduled for two weeks after she died, he said. The medical examiner’s office said Michel was a vulnerable adult “suffering from untreated severe mental health issues and a significant language barrier” at the time of her release on Feb. 27, the office said. She was arrested last summer for yelling at imaginary people due to her psychiatric challenges, Murphy said. She spent six months in Washington County Jail where she underwent multiple psychiatric examinations as she awaited her first hearing, he said. Read More A magistrate said he could not hold her for trial for threatening imaginary people, Murphy said. Afterward, ICE arrested her in her cell, put an ankle monitor on her and took her 25 miles (40 kilometers) away to Pittsburgh, where she sat at a bus shelter for days in winter, he said.“She was in September clothes and it was February, and the weather overwhelmed her and she went into hypothermia,” Murphy said. The medical examiner’s finding of homicide is different from a criminal charge, meaning “somebody did or failed to do something that brought about her demise,” Murphy said. He said he expects Michel’s family to file a lawsuit against ICE in connection with her death. In an email, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Lauren Bis said, “ICE had NOTHING to do with this woman’s death. She passed away THREE days after ICE encountered her.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. She called Michel “an illegal alien from Haiti” who was placed in removal proceedings after her arrest.Michel had all her belongings and a fully charged phone when she was released, with public transportation available, Bis said. ICE learned the day after Michel died that her ankle monitor “had been tampered with,” but county medical examiner staff “refused to cooperate or even talk with” ICE officials, she said.ICE called the U.S. Marshals Service, who retrieved the ankle monitor but were refused information about Michel’s condition, Bis said. ICE learned of her death via news media, she said.In a statement, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato called Michel’s death “a tragedy and appears that with a little humanity, it could have been completely avoidable.” U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., said her death was preventable and that “she deserved care, shelter, language access, and medical support.” ICE is no longer reporting the deaths of detainees within 30 days of their release from custody, ending a 2021 Biden-era policy. Health experts say the change will reflect fewer deaths than actually occur without addressing issues in medical care.___Dura reported from Bismarck, North Dakota. IND vs AFG: Outstanding! Shubman Gill takes one-handed blinder in 1st ODI - Watch
NEW DELHI: Indian captain Shubman Gill produced a stunning moment in the rain-shortened first ODI between India and Afghanistan at Dharamshala, pulling off a one-handed screamer that lit up the match as India tightened their grip in a 25-over contest. The catch came at a crucial stage as Afghanistan were trying to recover after a chaotic middle phase, but Gill’s sharp reflexes ended another key breakthrough attempt in style. The dismissal happened in the 21.4 over when Harsh Dubey tossed one up just outside off. Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar attempted a big shot, only to get a thick top edge that ballooned towards slip. Gill reacted instantly, diving to his left and sticking out one hand to complete a sensational grab, ensuring control as he rolled over on the ground. The batter was out for 0 off 2 balls, and India continued to chip away at the Afghan lower order.Watch:— BCCI (@BCCI) At the end, India bundled out the visitors for 194 in 24.5 overs.Gill reacted instantly, diving full stretch to his left and grabbing a one-handed stunner.Afghanistan had earlier been powered by a brilliant 102 off 51 balls from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who dominated the powerplay and middle overs with 8 fours and 8 sixes. However, once he fell at 142, the innings unravelled quickly. India’s bowlers kept striking at regular intervals. Arshdeep Singh picked up two early wickets, while debutant Gurnoor Brar impressed with three scalps, including Rashid Khan and the final wicket of Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi. Harsh Dubey also claimed three wickets, removing key batters Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Ghazanfar.Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed two wickets, while Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar supported the attack in a disciplined effort. Despite Gurbaz’s explosive century, Afghanistan collapsed from 142 for 3 to 194 all out, losing their last seven wickets for just 52 runs.

Dana White confirms bonus increases for UFC Freedom 250 at the White House
Photo by Mat Hayward/Getty ImagesSunday could prove to be a profitable one for a number of fighters taking part in the event.UFC 250 takes place on the White House lawn on June 14, with the MMA organisation putting together a card to mark 250 years of American independence. The event’s main billing is the lightweight title unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje. The two heavyweights headline following Alex Pereira’s clash with Ciryl Gane for the interim belt. All those names are likely to be among the top earners, but every fighter now has an opportunity to take home even more from UFC Freedom 250.The UFC is overhauling its approach by removing win bonuses from every contract. As a result, fighters now receive their entire fight purse upfront rather than having to rely on bonuses or victory pay.And it will be even more noticeable at events like this weekend’s, with payouts coming before any extra White House performance bonuses and sponsorship revenue is added in.Photo by Mat Hayward/Getty ImagesUFC White House performance bonuses soar to new heights under Dana WhiteThe UFC has already announced a $1 million crypto bonus for Freedom 250, but that’s not the only incentive available to fighters this weekend.Speaking at Friday night’s pre-fight press conference, held at the Lincoln Memorial, Dana White confirmed significant increases to the ‘Fight of the Night’ and ‘Performance of the Night’ bonuses. For UFC 300 in 2024, those bonuses were bumped up from $50k to $300k. Now, they’re even higher – this year’s $100k awards have jumped to $400k for FOTN winners and $425K for POTN recipients. The extra funding isn’t coming out of the UFC’s pocket either. White said the increase is thanks to a sponsorship deal with Liberty Financial.Alongside these payouts, UFC Freedom 250 has a reported budget of over $60 million. That figure covers everything from fighter pay to production costs and includes an exclusive crowd of just 4,300 VIPs on the White House South Lawn. There will also be a Fan Fest at The Ellipse outside the National Mall, where over 80,000 fans are expected throughout fight week. The bonus news will be especially welcome for Justin Gaethje. He already has a reputation as one of MMA’s most exciting fighters and has picked up some form of bonus in 13 of his first 15 UFC bouts.Read more:UFC Freedom 250 press conference delayed due to bad weather, sparking cancellation fears among fansJosh Hokit exposes contract terms and isn’t holding back on Alex Pereira’s remarksDana White relieved after judge gives green light to UFC Freedom 250 at the White House

Carving out a role a steep climb for Las Vegas Raiders’ Shedrick Jackson
Aug 23, 2025; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Shedrick Jackson (4) against the Arizona Cardinals during a preseason NFL game at State Farm Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images | Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images On pure speed alone, no other wide receiver on the roster can approach what Shedrick Jackson brings to the table in that regard. Blazing to a 4.25-second 40-yard dash time at the Auburn Pro Day as Jackson prepped for the 2023 NFL Draft, that kind of scintillating speed is a familial trait, as his great uncle and fellow Auburn and Raider product Bo Jackson was even more fleet of foot. In comparison to other Las Vegas Raiders wideouts, Dont’e Thornton Jr. (second year, 4.30 40-time at the NFL Combine), veteran Phillip Dorsett (eighth year, 4.33 40 at the combine), rookie Malik Benson (4.37 40 at the combine), undrafted rookie Jonathan Brady (4.39 40 at Indiana’s Pro Day), and Tre Tucker (fourth year, 4.40 40 at the combine) are the other blazers on the current 90-man squad. Being fast is great. But it won’t be the sole determining factor for Jackson’s roster chances under a new head coach in Klint Kubiak. Especially with others having jets, albeit not the same realm as Jackson. The Auburn product did have flashes last season in minimal offensive work (22 total snaps on offense in 2025) and is providing fleeting moments of impressiveness in the Raiders first mandatory minicamp session this past Tuesday.By The NumbersShedrick Jackson, Wide Receiver2025: 5 games (zero starts), 5 targets, 4 receptions, 56 yards, 1 touchdown; 1 carry, 3 yards. Career: (2023-25), 10 games (zero starts), 6 targets, 4 receptions, 56 yards, 1 touchdown; 1 carry, 3 yardsBut ensuring those aren’t flukes is key. Which makes the third-year undrafted free agents quest to land on the 53-man roster a steep uphill climb. Wide receiver Shedrick Jackson and a handful of rookies among top standouts in #Raiders minicamp practice Tuesday morning.https://t.co/EgZWmIDHtv— Levi Edwards (@theleviedwards) June 9, 2026Jackson spent six seasons with Auburn (2018-22) with the 2021 season being the most productive: In 13 games totaling 40 receptions for 527 yards and one touchdown. In total, the Alabama native saw action in 53 games netting 66 receptions for 874 yards and one touchdown, alongside one carry and rushing for 12 yards. Not surprisingly, Jackson went undrafted and signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. After yo-yoing with on and off the Bengals active roster and practice squad his rookie season, Jackson was outright releasd in September of 2024 and the Raiders scooped him up in late December of that year before inking a reserve/future contract for the 2025 season. Once again, Jackson played the active/practice squad shell game but did haul in his first-career touchdown catch — a 25-yard dart from then-quarterback Kenny Pickett — in a Week 14 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos. This offseason, the 6-foot-1 and 198-pound 26-year-old is one of 12 wide receivers vying for not only a 53-man roster spot, but also practice squad considerations. However, Raiders wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni stressed last week, at this point in time, there are no established roles at the position group and it’s a wide open competition. Let’s quickly take a look at projected starters: Tucker, Jalen Nailor, Jack Bech. Behind that group are most likely Benson, Thornton Jr., and Dareke Young. From a size/speed perspective, Jackson is an intriguing talent. But ditto for Thornton Jr., who is a freakish 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, with 4.30 speed. That noted, Thornton, the Raiders’ fourth-round pick (108th overall) in the 2025 draft didn’t play a lick on special teams — zero snaps as a rookie, in fact. That’s where Jackson’s opening is. But he’s got strong competition in that regard. Young, a free agent addition from the Seattle Seahawks, brings familiarity with Kubiak and special teams prowess. And that’s likely where the fifth or sixth wide receiver on the depth chart will primarily play: Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis’ groups. Don’t think any #Raiders fans had “Kenny Pickett to Shedrick Jackson TD in early December” on their bingo cards this summer pic.twitter.com/TmbZccXnrE— Nick Walters (@nickwalt) December 8, 2025Young brings the imposing size (6-foot-2 and 224 pounds) and speed (4.44 40-yard dash) alongside tackling ability that made him an elite gunner during his time with the Seahawks. He also showed he can be an effective kick returner when given opportunities (10 returns for 322 yards including a long return of 60 yards) and it’s that high football IQ and versatility that makes him an ideal addition to the special teams unit — a group looking to rebound after a terrible overall performance that saw former coordinator Tom McMahon fired in-season last year. A core special teams role is Jackson’s cleanest path to a 53-man roster spot and he’ll have to likely showcase he’s a better option in that regard than Young. Jackson, who is a year younger than Young, is no stranger to special teams work logging 38 snaps with Cincinnati in 2023 and 39 this past season with Las Vegas. But when compared to Young, a fifth-year veteran, the participation rate is paltry as the Raiders’ offseason addition logged 156 special teams snaps with the Seahawks and 697 total in the four seasons in the Pacific Northwest. Jackson must out-work and shine brighter than Young and others to become indispensable in DeCamillis’ eyes as a member of coverage units. Like Young, Jackson brings plenty of size and speed to the table as a gunner. It’d also be in Jackson’s best interest to get as many reps as kick and punt returner — two groups Las Vegas needs to elevate. Showcasing the speed and vision as a return man increases roster hopeful’s chances of earning a roster nod. Making the roster decision makers, be it Kubiak or general manager John Spytek, life difficult by having to choose hard cuts is what the NFL offseason is about, though. It’s those easy cuts when teams go from 90-man rosters to the regular season 53 where decision makers don’t bat an eye. And how hard of a decision it is to keep or get rid of him is on Jackson’s shoulders.

(AP) — There appeared to be thousands of empty seats scattered throughout Levi's Stadium for the World Cup match between Qatar and Switzerland on Saturday. On an unseasonably warm June afternoon by Bay Area standards, with the temperature at kickoff around 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius), many of those vacant seats were on the east side of the stadium that typically can get very hot for much of the year. With the Swiss fans clad it bright red, they blended in with the empty red seats. On Friday, FIFA blamed the empty seats during the World Cup match between South Korea and the Czech Republic in Guadalajara on fans who watched from the concourses. For NFL games at Levi’s Stadium, crowds are often late arriving because of tailgating outside the venue in the heart of Silicon Valley, but it is not allowed for World Cup matches. That made for smooth entry Saturday as small lines formed outside several hours before kickoff.Levi's Stadium holds 68,500 for NFL games but can be expanded to more than 70,000 for soccer. Brazil and Colombia drew 70,971 two years ago in a group match at Copa America. The stadium in Santa Clara staged the Super Bowl only four months ago.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup

It will be their Elite Camp on June 21, and per Chris Nee of Noles247, 2028 defensive lineman Chase Foster will be competing in it.He's been to Tallahassee several times already. Foster's first trip to visit FSU came in July of 2024 for their Seminole Showcase. Since receiving an offer from the Seminoles last May, he's been back on campus twice. One was for Florida State's victory against the Alabama Crimson Tide last year, and he returned in April for an unofficial visit.Over 20 programs have extended scholarships to Foster. Rohit Sharma scripts history, becomes only the second Indian opener to...
NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma added another remarkable chapter to his glittering career on Saturday, becoming only the second Indian opener after Virender Sehwag to score 16,000 international runs across formats. The landmark came during the first ODI against Afghanistan in Dharamsala, with the veteran batter needing just six runs to enter the exclusive club. Rohit reached the milestone in his 384th innings for India, having accumulated 15,994 runs as an opener before the start of the game. The achievement places the former India captain among some of the greatest openers in cricket history. Overall, Rohit became only the seventh batter to cross the 16,000-run mark as an opener in international cricket.Joining an elite group of opening greatsRohit now stands alongside legendary names such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Chris Gayle, David Warner, Graeme Smith, Desmond Haynes and Sehwag. Sri Lankan great Jayasuriya tops the chart with 19,298 runs, followed by Gayle (18,867) and Warner (18,744).Sehwag remains India's most prolific opener with 16,119 runs in 400 innings across 332 matches. Rohit's milestone is all the more remarkable considering that batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, despite scoring over 34,000 international runs overall, amassed 15,335 runs as an opener and narrowly missed the 16,000-run club. Before the Afghanistan ODI, Rohit had scored 11,577 runs in 282 ODIs, 4,301 runs in 67 Tests and 4,231 runs in 159 T20Is, the latter two formats from which he has since retired.Another milestone falls in DharamsalaThe day brought another notable achievement for the former Indian captain. When Rohit reached three runs in the innings, he surpassed South African legend Jacques Kallis' ODI tally of 11,579 runs.Kallis accumulated his runs in 328 ODIs between 1996 and 2014, while Rohit moved past him in his 283rd one-day international. Rohit is now at 8th spot in the all-time list led by Tendulkar with 18,246 runs.Having already established himself as one of the most destructive white-ball batters of his generation, Rohit's latest feat further cemented his place among the game's all-time greats.Even after retiring from Tests and T20Is, the 39-year-old continues to scale new heights, with his consistency and longevity ensuring that records keep tumbling in Indian colours.

2027 guard Frashad Tisby recaps recent Auburn visit
It has been a busy week for Auburn basketball and the future of the program. Head coach Steven Pearl attended the NBPA Top 100 Camp earlier this week and took a look at 2027 prospects Beckham Black and Lewis Uvwo. The Tigers also have their hopes of landing talented 2027 three-star small forward Frashad Tisby. He recently did an interview with Rivals' Jamie Shaw and discussed his visit to Auburn. In the article by Shaw, Tisby was complimentary of Auburn. He talked about how he has been watching the Tigers with Steven Pearl as head coach over the past year. Tisby has taken notice of how Auburn uses Tahaad Pettiford as the main scorer. "I would come in as the secondary playmaker. I fit their playstyle because I can handle the ball and get my teammates involved," Tisby said in his interview with Shaw.Auburn could use a good playmaking wing player like Tisby on its future roster. For the Tigers, having a player making at the wing position would make them harder to defend. He is rated a three-star prospect by both 247Sports and Rivals. Overall, he is the No. 125 player for the 2027 recruiting class. He plays high school basketball at Cross Creek High School in Augusta, Georgia, where he led his team to a state championship. He scored 16 points in the win.At his height of 6-6, he has shown the ability to get to the basket and finish at the rim. His offensive skillset is not limited, though, and Tisby has range beyond the three-point line. His length and athleticism also make him a talented defender as well. Tisby is a good shot blocker around the basket and can also recover if the person he is defending were to get past him. Other than Auburn, he also has offers from Harvard, Marquette, and South Carolina, among others.Contact/Follow us @TheAuburnWire on X (Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Auburn news, notes, and opinions. Germany fighting the heat in World Cup training
WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA - JUNE 12: Julian Nagelsmann, Head Coach of Team Germany reacts with his player Joshua Kimmich during a Team Germany training session at W. Dennie Spry Soccer Stadium on June 12, 2026 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. (Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images) | Getty Images Germany are not having an easy time at the World Cup due to the extremely high temperatures of their base camp.Julian Nagelsmann and his team have set up shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. According to Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the heat index there hit a staggering 41 degrees Celsius, which translates to 105 Fahrenheit. In order to combat the sweltering heat, kit suppliers Adidas have now provided the players with special cooling vests, while special fans were set up to spray cooled water vapor on the players. Paramedics were also naturally on standby in case of an emergency.Nagelsmann, meanwhile, is trying to address the discipline of the players. He reportedly encouraged the team to stay out of the air-conditioned rooms as much as possible to acclimatize themselves with the temperatures of the host nation. However, the opening match against Curaçao is taking place in Houston, which will be indoors and in air conditioning.Should Germany advance to the knockout stages, they will also most likely continue the tournament in America, with the only other potential options being Vancouver and Mexico City. Germany would need to advance as a third placed team to play at either. The other options are Santa Clara, Kansas City, Atlanta, Arlington, Seattle, and Foxborough.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts

FIFA World Cup: 2 local boys get on-field opportunity of a lifetime
Inside Decatur’s Watch Fest Thursday, two local little boys were practicing their on-field appearance at the World Cup next week.“I’m going to be crazy,” joked 9-year-old Nathan Faya. “Enthusiasm!”His friend, Kristofer Johnson, 10, giggled and agreed. They spoke to Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco who was at Watch Fest to report on the economic impact of the games.Kristofer’s mom, Kristina Johnson, said they play for a youth team connected to a nonprofit called Soccer in the Streets. The organization aims to make soccer more accessible in Metro-Atlanta. The organization had an opportunity to pick two kids to escort teams onto the field during the World Cup matches in Atlanta next week, and Kristofer and Nathan won the lottery pick.“They were blessed to be picked, and they were so excited about it because they are down-hard soccer fans,” said Kristina Johnson. She said an opportunity like this could be monumental for a child.“I think it’s gong to be a real life-changing experience for them to see, OK, this is what I can be, become,” said Johnson. The boys considered that idea themselves. Without skipping a beat or looking up from his ice cream cup, Faya told Francisco, “I guarantee it.”[DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks][SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Intensity key to US dream World Cup start, says captain Ream
US captain Tim Ream said intensity and passion proved essential as they ran rings around Paraguay (JAMIE SQUIRE)United States captain Tim Ream told AFP an "intense" training camp was vital to his team's dream World Cup start, as a 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay turbo-charged the co-hosts' hopes of unlikely glory. The US squad has spent three weeks with coach Mauricio Pochettino since assembling for pre-tournament friendlies. Preparation racheted up several gears last weekend as they arrived at their California base camp.Carrying the high expectations and intense scrutiny of being joint hosts -- along with Mexico and Canada -- the US players and staff struck a relaxed pose in front of media through the build-up.But Ream admitted tensions had run higher behind the scenes, insisting that same passion proved essential as they ran rings around Paraguay Friday night."We've been together for almost three weeks, and training has been intense -- there's been some tense moments, amongst ourselves," Ream said."That's just a sign of guys who are ready to go, ready to get after it, and we showed that today from the very beginning" of the Paraguay win, he said.Ream did not specify the nature of those fractious "moments", but said by the time his team took to the field in front of 70,000 fans, "I didn't have to say too much today -- we'll leave it at that."The emphatic scoreline puts the US in a strong position to progress from Group D, with games against Australia on Friday and Turkey the following week still to come.In his post-game press conference, Pochettino emphasized the importance of having his full 26-man roster together for an extended period of training. It is a luxury he has not often been afforded since taking the job nearly two years ago."We were desperate one year ago to work with the whole team, and we didn't have the possibility," said Pochettino."Because we know very well that if you have the possibility to work three, four weeks with a whole group that you believe can arrive to the World Cup, these type of things can happen, no?"Since Pochettino took the national team role in 2024, players have had to juggle club commitments, and recover from injuries, while several key players including Christian Pulisic chose to rest during last summer's Gold Cup."They need to know us, we need to know them, to understand what we expect from them. When you only have a few days to reunite and to play, you only select players, but you cannot coach players," said Pochettino. The victory was watched by 16 million people on Fox -- a record for a US soccer match on English-language TV.It has sent triggered a spike in ticket prices for upcoming US games, and had some fans and pundits wondering if their team could win the whole thing. While not going quite that far in his post-game statements, midfielder Weston McKennie said his team have no intention of letting that intensity fade."This is something that we don't want to over-celebrate. Because we want this to be the normal for us, and the normal expectation that we have for ourselves," he said.Ream added: "It's easy to do it one game, you then have to back that up with another game. And then another game.amz/rcw

Aston Villa Star Sending Transfer Signals To Serie A Club: What Should Emery Do?
Aston Villa Star Sending Transfer Signals To Serie A Club: What Should Emery Do?Italian outlet Calciomercato have dropped a bit of a bombshell regarding Emiliano Martinez. The 33-year-old goalkeeper is currently away with Argentina preparing for World Cup duty, but his mind seems to be elsewhere. Reports from Italy claim he has quietly informed Juventus that he is willing to take a pay cut to make a move to Turin happen. Currently picking up around €9m a year at Villa Park, the stopper is ready to slash those wages just to get the deal over the line.Aston Villa news: Emiliano Martinez closes in on Juventus switchIt is a massive development. Juventus are now planning to touch base with Aston Villa officials in the coming days to turn this into something concrete. Martinez’s camp isn’t hiding it, either; they have made his desire for the switch completely obvious. Turning 34 in September, the Argentine views a Serie A adventure as the final major chapter of his career.Personal terms are practically sorted, but the Italian giants still need Unai Emery to play ball. Juve want him on the cheap, ideally for next to nothing. Villa, however, value their number one at €12m. With three years left on his current contract, there is absolutely no reason for the Midlands club to get bullied at the negotiating table.Aston Villa’s decision looms largeBIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND – MAY 15: Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa celebrates with the fans after the Premier League match between Aston Villa and Liverpool at Villa Park on May 15, 2026 in Birmingham, England. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images)He has now reportedly shaken hands on a three-year deal worth roughly €5.5m a year. That is a massive drop from his current packet. He is fresh off lifting the Europa League in Istanbul, so his stock is through the roof right now. Juventus are clearly desperate. They missed out on their other primary keeping targets, which hands Villa all the leverage. Holding out for a fee between €10m and €15m is just basic common sense, given his world-class pedigree.Losing him without a proper backup plan would be total madness. Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin keeps getting mentioned in dispatches, but a €20m price tag feels way too steep for a club needing to balance the books and build squad depth. Villa would be far wiser targeting a younger, hungrier keeper. Someone Emery can mould, rather than splashing out another marquee fee on a finished product. Dragging this saga out all summer while the World Cup plays out will only toxicify the dressing room right when pre-season training gets underway. Aston Villa need to dictate the tempo here, pocket the cash, and move on.

Could Sergei Bobrovsky elevate the Sabres to NHL Stanley Cup contenders?
Could Sergei Bobrovsky elevate the Sabres to NHL Stanley Cup contenders? originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.If the Buffalo Sabres want to stop chasing the Stanley Cup and start chasing handshakes, the answer might be hiding in Florida.A recent report from The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun may have revealed an intriguing path forward: Florida Panthers superstar Sergei Bobrovsky. The Carolina Hurricanes are just one victory away from capturing their second Stanley Cup in franchise history, but according to LeBrun, they nearly acquired the 37-year-old netminder at the trade deadline. The deal reportedly stalled because Carolina refused to include a first-round pick.On the surface, that feels like a remarkably modest asking price for a goaltender who carried his team to three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances and back-to-back championships. Then again, skepticism was understandable.Bobrovsky was coming off the roughest regular season of his decorated career, finishing 27-23-1 with a 3.07 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage—numbers that looked nothing like the Vezina Trophy winner fans have come to expect. But statistics rarely tell the entire story.MORE: Report: Panthers Attempted To Deal Sergei Bobrovsky To Hurricanes At 2026 NHL Trade DeadlineFlorida spent the season absorbing blow after blow before it ever had a chance to find its rhythm.Captain Aleksander Barkov suffered a torn ACL that wiped out his entire NHL season. Although he returned to lead Finland to a gold medal at the IIHF World Championship, the Panthers spent months without the heartbeat of their lineup. The blue line wasn’t spared, either. Seth Jones broke his collarbone, forcing him to miss 26 games and leaving Florida without one of its biggest additions during a pivotal stretch of the schedule.Up front, Brad Marchand was eventually shut down for the remainder of the season after battling through injuries, further adding to a casualty list that swelled beyond 500 man-games lost.By the time Florida was officially eliminated from playoff contention, the damage had become insurmountable. A roster built to chase another Stanley Cup spent the final weeks simply trying to reach the finish line.Viewed through that lens, Bobrovsky’s numbers become far easier to understand. He wasn’t playing behind the deep, relentless Panthers teams that dominated the previous two post-seasons. More often than not, he was trying to keep an undermanned roster afloat.MORE: Sabres Goalie Named Among NHLers Who Could Use Fresh StartJudging him solely by his stat line while ignoring the circumstances is an incomplete evaluation.Ironically, Buffalo’s own season illustrated why context matters. For much of the regular season, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon formed one of the NHL’s steadier tandems, providing dependable play as the Sabres captured the Atlantic Division. They limited costly mistakes, made the saves they were expected to make, and thrived behind a disciplined defensive structure. When Luukkonen missed time with injuries, Lyon largely answered the call.It was enough to win in October, November, and March. It wasn’t enough in May.The Stanley Cup Playoffs demand something different. They demand a goaltender capable of stealing a game when defensive structure breaks down, momentum swings, or an opponent controls an entire period.Montreal found that difference-maker in Jakub Dobeš. His timely saves repeatedly shifted the balance of the second-round series, helping push the Canadiens to a decisive Game 7 victory.Buffalo never found that same level.Lyon delivered several memorable performances during the Sabres’ six-game first-round win over the Boston Bruins, but he couldn’t sustain that form against Montreal. Luukkonen, meanwhile, was unable to seize control of the series when his opportunity arrived.Instead of riding a hot hand, the Sabres spent their biggest games searching for one.Sometimes that’s the difference between advancing and cleaning out lockers.Bobrovsky may be 37, but great goaltenders have a habit of extending their prime when the games matter most. His résumé is filled with moments that few active netminders can match, and even if there’s only one more deep post-season run left in him, it could be exactly what Buffalo needs. For a franchise still chasing its first Stanley Cup, the appeal extends beyond wins and losses. It represents a chance to finally turn the page on decades of frustration and perhaps, at long last, quiet the lingering echoes of 1999—a wound that has never fully healed in Western New York.Maybe Bobrovsky isn’t the perfect answer. But if the price is slightly overpaying for a UFA goaltender, passing on a proven champion could prove far more costly than taking the chance.More NHL NewsPatrick Roy is the best NHL coaching candidate for the Maple LeafsJets pass on Caleb Malhotra meeting at NHL Combine, sparks questions on potential fall in draftWith each NHL Stanley Cup final point, Hurricanes’ Nikolaj Ehlers proves the Jets wrongMitch Marner isn't allowed to pick and choose when he talks about his past with the Maple Leafs4 NHL teams who can trade for Red Wings' Dylan Larkin following his trade request

Part of the outdoor arena built on the South Lawn contains an overhead canopy to combat these concerns. If the weather becomes dangerous, however, the event will be delayed. This includes any lightning strikes or severe winds, for example.Has a UFC fight ever been outdoors? While UFC CEO Dana White generally tries to avoid outdoor venues because of weather concerns. That being said, the Freedom 250 is not the first UFC event to take place outdoors. That honor belongs to UFC 112, which took place at a temporary venue in Abu Dhabi in 2010. Back then, the title match featured Anderson Silva and Demian Maia. There was no rain at that event, but it was a historically dry season featuring dust storms in the United Arab Emirates.

Nancy Pelosi refused to remove trans rights from landmark Hate Crimes Act despite pressure
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is set to retire in 2027 and recently spoke about her decades-long career advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. “Anything that we accomplished, whether it was fighting HIV and AIDS, ending discrimination, passing hate crimes legislation, or ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ would never have happened without outside mobilization,” she humbly told the Washington Blade. “Our inside maneuvering was important, but we couldn’t do our best job without the community. Every chance I get, I thank them for their patriotism because they make democracy function.” Related Nancy Pelosi’s LGBTQ+ legacy: A complete look The Blade called Pelosi “one of the most influential champions of LGBTQ rights in American politics,” recognizing, among other things, her HIV/AIDS advocacy, as well as the roles she played in passing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and in repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Pelosi said the Hate Crimes Act was a defining success for both her and LGBTQ+ people “because it forced people to confront the real consequences of hate.” She also said she refused to remove trans protections from the bill, no matter how much advisors pushed. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “People told me, ‘You can pass this in a minute if you take out trans,’” Pelosi said. “I said, ‘I won’t pass it in 100 years because I’m not ever taking out trans.’ We passed it with trans protections included.” Pelosi also spoke about how combatting the HIV/AIDS crisis was a central reason she first ran for Congress in the late 1980s. “My first words on the House floor were that I had come here to fight HIV and AIDS,” she said. “People asked why I would make that my first statement. To me, that reaction showed just how much discrimination still existed and how much work remained to be done.” “When we were trying to bring the Democratic convention to San Francisco, people were saying they couldn’t come because of HIV/AIDS,” she added. “What emerged from that moment was community-based advocacy, community-based care, prevention, and research. Every success we had sprang from the community itself.” She also believes the epidemic, despite its atrocities, did ultimately bring greater LGBTQ+ acceptance. “When families learned that a son or daughter was HIV-positive and gay, barriers started to break down. Love prevailed in many cases. I actually give HIV/AIDS some credit for the acceptance of marriage equality because people began seeing these issues through the lens of family.” She continued to bring credit back to the LGBTQ+ community for its progress, even when asked how she hopes her role in the movement will be remembered: “People were dying, and the community demanded action. I hope people remember that the progress we made came from the very vocal participation of LGBTQ people and their allies. I was honored that they trusted me to carry that fight in Congress.” A timeline of Pelosi’s LGBTQ+ advocacy laid out by Uncloseted Media demonstrates just how much Pelosi fought for LGBTQ+ people, including marching in the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in October 1987 and helping obtain permits to display the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt on the National Mall. More recently, she has spoken out against the Trump administration’s treatment of trans people. “I have a grandniece who is trans, and she’s scared to death,” Pelosi told Advocate in 2025. “It’s just the saddest thing… Over my career, I’ve witnessed the progress the LGBTQ+ community has made in terms of social acceptance, so it’s just alarming and sad that trans rights remain a focal point of the administration’s attack. The trans issue is what they have glommed onto. They want to strip trans individuals and their families of essential services… Democrats must stand unequivocally with the trans community. The message has to be: We are with you. You are not alone.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Shubman Gill enters elite club, becomes fastest Indian to...
Shubman Gill added another chapter to his remarkable rise in international cricket by becoming the fastest Indian to 3,000 ODI runs during the opening match of the three-match series against Afghanistan in Dharamsala on Saturday. The India captain reached the landmark in his 61st innings, eclipsing Shikhar Dhawan's previous Indian record of 72 innings. Only former South Africa opener Hashim Amla, who achieved the feat in 57 innings, has reached the milestone faster, making Gill the second-quickest batter in ODI history to 3,000 runs. The latest milestone further underlined Gill's growing stature as one of the premier batters in world cricket.Gill, who made his ODI debut against New Zealand in January 2019, has enjoyed a prolific start to his one-day career. The right-hander reached 3,000 runs with an average comfortably above 55 while maintaining a strike rate close to 100, highlighting his ability to combine consistency with attacking strokeplay.Former South Africa opener Hashim Amla continues to hold the world record, having reached 3,000 runs in just 57 innings. Gill's effort places him ahead of a distinguished group that includes West Indies' Shai Hope and Pakistan batters Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq, all of whom took 67 innings to get to the milestone. The Punjab batter also surpassed former India opener Dhawan, whose 72-innings effort had stood as the national benchmark for several years.Gill's latest achievement adds to an already impressive ODI résumé that includes eight centuries and numerous match-winning performances. The 26-year-old has established himself as a cornerstone of India's batting unit across formats.Earlier in the match, debutants Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar took three wickets apiece, but Rahmanullah Gurbaz's quickfire 102 powered Afghanistan to 194 in their rain-truncated opening ODI against India in Dharamsala on Saturday. The contest was reduced to a 25-overs-per-side affair due to relentless rain earlier in the day.Dubey was slightly expensive but returned figures of 3/47 from his allotted five overs, while Brar remained disciplined and finished with figures of 3/27 in 4.5 overs. However, Afghanistan's effort ultimately proved insufficient as skipper Shubman Gill struck an unbeaten 84 to headline India's seven-wicket victory in the rain-truncated contest. Chasing 195 in the 25-overs-per-side match, India reached 195/3 in 22.5 overs after Afghanistan had been bowled out for 194 in 24.5 overs.

World Cup: Qatar stun Switzerland in injury-time as Bundesliga quartet feature
World Cup: Qatar stun Switzerland in injury-time as Bundesliga quartet featureBorussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi played the entire game in Switzerland’s disappointing draw with Qatar. Freiburg’s breakout star Johan Manzambi made his World Cup debut as a substitute, while Fabian Rieder from Augsburg and HSV’s Miro Muheim also featured in the second-half.Kobel was called into action inside the first two minutes when Edmilson Junior suddenly found himself clear in goal. Dortmund’s shot-stopper finally went into a major tournament as Switzerland’s number one after former Gladbach and FC Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer retired from international football. At the other end, Switzerland’s first two chances fell to Dan Ndoye, who was one of the only three players in the starting lineup with no Bundesliga experience. Remo Freuler is another one yet to play in Germany’s top-flight league, and he was instrumental in the first goal of the game in the 21st minute.Qatar’s goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada was penalized when he smashed over Bologna’s central midfielder. Former Gladbach and Schalke striker Breel Embolo converted the resulting penalty-kick as he grabbed Switzerland’s first goal of the tournament, as he did four years ago against the country of his birth, Cameroon. The Europeans were in full control of the game as Kobel only had to make one more save before the half-time break. Edmilson, who was also eligible to play for Belgium and Brazil, was once again the player with the shot on target.Abunada went on to make decent saves to deny Ndoye and former Augsburg star Ruben Vargas before Michel Aebischer’s attempt was blocked on the goalline. Al-Rayyan’s custodian also had to make more saves in the second-half as Switzerland broke their record of most shots in a World Cup game. However, it took one moment for Qatar to earn a precious point. Leonesa’s Homam Al Amin, who is the only player to ply his trade outside Qatar Stars League, produced a superb delivery as the 35-year-old center-back Boulaem Khoukhi beat Kobel with a powerful header in the 94th minute. As a result, all four teams in Group B are level on points and goal difference. Murat Yakin’s Switzerland will hope to put behind the disappointment when they face Bosnia & Herzegovina, while Qatar play against co-hosts Canada.

Two Hopedale seniors share nearly 'picture perfect' end to high school careers
WORCESTER — While Phoebe Carroll and Mia Casey soaked in their team’s come-from-behind win over Georgetown in a Division 5 state semifinal on June 10, the two Hopedale High seniors found themselves on the cusp of an historic milestone. With their softball team’s latest MIAA tournament triumph, Carroll and Casey needed one more victory on June 13 to secure three straight state championships in three different high school sports this school year.“Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to win one (championship),” Casey told the MetroWest Daily News on June 10. “I’ve been fortunate to win two this year, with my best friend (Carroll) on the team. I don’t think I’ve wanted anything more.”“I don’t even know how to put it into words,” Carroll added. “It’s unreal.”Unfortunately for Carroll and Casey, the unimaginable only nearly happened on Saturday. With a 4-2 loss to fourth-seeded Maynard in the Div. 5 state final, No. 3 Hopedale left Worcester State’s Rockwood Field one win shy of its first state title in program history.Nevertheless, Carroll and Casey concluded their senior year with state titles across two sports (volleyball and basketball) and reached a state final in another — softball.“(We’ve been) maxing out our seasons as long as we can,” Carroll told the T&G. “Making the most of (all the time together) and making all these memories while we can. It’s been really fun.”“It’s been everything I could have imagined, honestly,” Casey said. “Just growing up, I’ve watched my siblings win state championships, so that’s always been my goal. And we’ve come close in my like past years so then my senior year, winning two in a row and then making it to my third one has been crazy. I’m happy no matter what, even though we didn’t win. It’s still a big accomplishment that I’ll definitely remember forever.”Armed with a new head coach and a slew of seniors this past fall, the Hopedale girls’ volleyball team earned a No. 1 seed in the Division 5 state tournament and a spot in the state final for the first time in program history. Then, on Nov. 15, 2025, the Blue Raiders swept seventh-seeded Smith Voke to claim the D5 state crown.A smash from Casey on the final volley of the game caused Hopedale’s opponent to hit the ball out of bounds and send the Blue Raiders into a frenzy.“The big thing that (Carroll and Casey) brought, besides their leading on the court and their play, … was they were strong and athletic players that the other kids wanted to emulate,” said Hopedale first-year volleyball coach Gary Patch. “They liked to compete.”Competing for the Hopedale girls’ basketball team this past winter, Carroll (a T&G Hometeam All-Star for volleyball and basketball) and Casey helped their team reach the Division 5 state championship game for the first time since 2022.With a game-high 23 points from Carroll, who scored over 1,000 points for her career and won a state title as an eighth grader, the Blue Raiders beat Drury, 48-35, on March 15 and once again hoisted a MIAA state championship trophy above their heads.“(Carroll) did everything,” Hopedale girls’ basketball coach Jason Rojee said. “In terms of the basketball court, Phoebe was the centerpiece of what made everything go.”As for Casey, Hopedale’s dynamo from off the bench?“(Casey) showed up a lot during the tournament,” Rojee said. “She definitely was a spark for us. She’s tough, she’s gritty. That’s where her asset came in big time.“Both of them are quality leaders and tough kids.”A day later, Carroll and Casey turned in their basketball jerseys and shoes for softball mitts and uniforms.“The next day they had softball tryouts. The next day,” Rojee said. “They’re the cliche of ‘No days off’ (think Bill Belichick); they’ve legit had no days off.”With Carroll, a three-year starter in the outfield, and Casey, a three-year starter at shortstop, leading the way, Hopedale (14-11) earned a No. 3 seed in the Division 5 MIAA tournament. The Blue Raiders reeled off postseason wins over Smith Academy (18-1 score), Hopkins Academy (7-0) and Granby (12-0) earlier this month before they found themselves trailing Georgetown by two runs in a Div. 5 state semifinal on Wednesday.Hopedale then erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-4 lead and when Carroll corralled the final out in left field, she and Casey found themselves on the brink of history thanks to a 9-6 victory over Georgetown.“It’s a pretty remarkable story overall,” Hopedale softball coach Jim Casey told the T&G on Friday. “Those two having the chance to do a three-peat is pretty unbelievable.”“I’m not surprised that those two are the ones that are going for it,” Rojee told the T&G on Thursday. “It’s ridiculous. Can’t imagine that being (done) many times, if it all. They’re great kids. The entire softball program has been knocking on the door for a couple of years, too.“Just hope they got one more in them.”On Saturday, Maynard’s Maddy Karlon struck out 13 and allowed one earned run on five hits over seven innings to propel the Tigers past Hopedale, 4-2, in the Division 5 state final.Hopedale’s Emily Atwood struck out eight and gave up four runs (two earned) on nine hits while Carroll collected a hit and Casey grabbed an RBI.As Carroll and Casey walked away from Worcester State’s Rockwood Field following the game, the two reminisced about their storybook senior year at Hopedale High.“The whole school year has just been so special,” Carroll said.“Picture perfect ending,” Casey concluded.—Contact Tommy Cassell at tcassell@telegram.com. Why Ole Miss trusts struggling ace Hunter Elliott vs Troy in CWS elimination game
OMAHA, NE — In its first time staring down elimination, Ole Miss baseball is turning to its veteran star.Hunter Elliott will start for Ole Miss against Troy in the College World Series on June 14 (1 p.m., ESPN). Because both teams lost their opener, the loser of the Rebels vs Trojans will be eliminated.Elliott, a junior, spoke June 13 at Ole Miss' open practice at Creighton University's campus. He isn't changing his approach because of the stakes. Ole Miss is 7-0 when Elliott starts an NCAA Tournament game over his career."I don't think the mindset is going to change much," Elliott said. "I think that's why a lot of people sometimes fail in win-or-go-home situations. Because they think they've got to change what they've been doing all year."Hunter Elliott has struggled down stretch for Ole MissElliott is the face of the Ole Miss baseball program, but his statistics this season are down from the lofty standards he's set. Elliott is 5-3 with a 5.15 ERA. In 2025 he was 10-3 with a 2.94 ERA.Ole Miss won Elliott's start in the Auburn Super Regional, but he lasted just 4⅓ innings, allowing two earned runs and walking four and with two strikeouts.Even though Elliott has been the Friday starter all season and started the first game of regionals and super regionals, Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco went with Taylor Rabe to open the College World Series vs North Carolina. In his last six starts, Elliott has pitched 28 innings with a 7.71 ERA. Elliott has honed in on what specifically he needs to fix while facing a good Troy offense."I need to get ahead in counts a little better," Elliott said. "I need to control the first pitch. Throw a lot of first-pitch strikes. The main thing is get ahead and put guys away. I didn't do that great the last start."Statistics don't capture the extent of Elliott's worth. He is the last remaining player for the 2022 national championship team and started the game that clinched Ole Miss' first title.Bianco called Elliott one of the guttiest players to wear an Ole Miss uniform after the super regional, and said it's what makes Elliott good in big moments."He's an ace in every sense of the word, but I think the true aces are the guys that just win when you run them out there," Bianco said. "They seem to have success even when they don't have their best stuff. Even when things maybe don't go their way."Sam Hutchens covers Ole Miss for the Clarion Ledger. Early mistakes prove costly for Falcons' in state tourney loss
AKRON – When you get to the state tournament, everything is bigger and magnified. The Fairfield Union baseball team, playing in its first state tournament in 40 years (1986), didn’t let the moment become too big, but the Falcons certainly had their share of jitters in the first two innings in a Division IV state semifinal against Bishop Fenwick.Fairfield Union committed four errors in the first inning, and Fenwick took advantage by scoring six runs. The Falcons were able to settle in the rest of the way, but it was too much to overcome in a 7-2 loss June 13 at Akron’s 7 17 Credit Union Park.“The nerves were there, weren't they?” Fairfield Union coach Scott Burke said. “You come to the final four and play a team like Fenwick, and they are going to make you pay for your mistakes. We tried to do things perfectly, and nothing goes well when you try to be perfect. We needed to do what got us here. We didn’t handle their early offensive pressure.”More: Five days in Akron with three softball teams left a lasting impressionIt was the end of a dream season for the Falcons, who finished 24-7, including Mid-State League-Buckeye Division, district, and regional championships, which was the first time they accomplished those feats in more than two decades.“We just weren't playing our best, and playing on a new field, we committed four errors, and the nerves got the best of us,” Fairfield Union senior shortstop Ashton Waldrop said. “It’s heartbreaking, and this is obviously not the outcome we wanted, but this has been an amazing season. We changed the program and made new beginnings for the young guys, so I am excited for the future.”Fenwick scored an unearned run in the first inning and was able to plate five runs in the second with three hits, but two of the runs were scored on a bases-loaded balk and a wild pitch. The Falcons' nerves showed because they finished the game with three balks.Even though the Fairfield Union defense and pitching settled in, allowing only one more run in the final five innings, the Falcons’ offense struggled to get the whole game going.Fairfield Union finished with only two hits, both from senior center fielder Garrett Dilcher, who had two triples. The second one in the sixth inning knocked in two runs. Ashton Waldrop and Alex Burke both reached on back-to-back walks with two outs before Dilcher delivered his triple down the left field line.Fenwick finished with eight hits. Cameron Silcott started and lasted two innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on four hits. Eli Wolfe came on in relief in the third inning and pitched four innings, giving up one run on three hits, and Joe Blankenship pitched a scoreless seventh inning. All three of those pitchers are juniors and will return next season.“We have some guys that are really down right now, but we tried to tell our guys that people in our community supported this group, which hasn’t done this in 40 years," Burke said. "We had a great turnout, and they rallied around these kids. We have to look at the big picture and not just today. We had a great season and did things we haven’t accomplished in a long time.”Tom Wilson is a sports reporter for the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette. Hawaii pitching coach Keith Zuniga leaving for USC
University of Hawaii pitching coach Keith Zuniga is leaving the Rainbow Warrior baseball team to lead USC’s pitching staff.Zuniga will replace Sean Allen, who resigned as the Trojans’ pitching coach last week to become Lamar University’s head baseball coach.“I know he’s grateful for the opportunity, and he’s going to do his thing,” pitcher Isaiah Magdaleno said of Zuniga. “Great coach, great guy. … He’s got connections to Southern California. He’ll fit right in. … He deserves it. He’s going to do a great job. Being able to create bonds with everybody, I feel that’s what he does best. I know he’s going to do big things over there. It’s good for him and his family to move up the ladder in coaching. After college ball, hopefully it’s the pros for him.”Zuniga is widely regarded as one of college baseball’s top pitching coaches. In each of his three seasons at UH, the ’Bows were one of four Division I teams to place in the top 20 nationally in earned-run average. This season, the ’Bows are third nationally with a 3.45 ERA. Big West opponents hit a league-low .216 against the ’Bows. In 2023, Zuniga replaced Mathew Troupe, who became pitching coach at Loyola Marymount. This past season, Zuniga developed an effective front-to-back staff. Magdaleno, who was UH’s closer in 2025, emerged as an award-winning, series-opening starter. This past week, Baseball America and Perfect Game each named Magdaleno to All-America third team. Hekili Robello, who redshirted in 2025 after transferring from Santa Rosa College, impressed as a weekend starter and diligent student. Relief pitcher Tsubasa Tomii was named to the 2026 All-Big West first team. The ’Bows will have a reorganized coaching staff when they officially move from the Big West to the Mountain West on July 1. Earlier this week, head coach Rich Hill confirmed that Dave Nakama, UH’s hitting coach the past five seasons, was leaving the program.

‘Fifa is a dictatorship’ fumes Gary Neville after World Cup offside controversy
Gary Neville has labelled Fifa “a dictatorship” after a failure to release a VAR replay used to decide a tight semi-automated offside call during Switzerland’s draw with Qatar at World Cup 2026.In the first half of the Group B clash, Switzerland were awarded a penalty when Remo Freuler was clattered by Qatari goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada. Replays suggested that Freuler may have been offside from Breel Embolo’s header forward before he was fouled but a VAR review determined the original decision should stand.Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler but the Swiss star may have been offside during the build-up (Reuters)However, the specific replays used and the lines drawn by the semi-automated offside system to determine that Freuler was indeed onside weren’t shown, leaving fans to take the decision on trust. And while working as a pundit on the game for ITV, ex-England international Neville was fuming at Fifa’s lack of transparency around the decision-making process.Speaking at half-time, Neville said: “Offside. We all think it here. Everybody will think it at home. Fifa are the host broadcaster, they’ve got the evidence of the semi-automatic decision that they can show us. Why are they not showing us? “They did this in the last tournament. Fans are already distrusting of Fifa and technology to start with. There is a massive question mark over that because that is offside in my eyes until they prove me different.”"Why are they not showing us?.. we are all thinking it" 🤔Neville, Wrighty and Big Dunc debate the potential offside in the build-up to Switzerland's penalty pic.twitter.com/TVOZ5LkXMu— ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 13, 2026Once ITV’s rules expert Christina Unkel confirmed that Fifa have the replays, with the offside lines drawn, but simply chose not to show them, Neville went a step further.“It’s like a dicator. Honestly, it’s a dictatorship, this,” he fumed. “The idea that they hold this evidence internally and don’t show fans of countries that are playing in tournaments. It’s absolutely ridiculous.“Honestly to not show the evidence of an offside... Prove to us it’s offside. Show it straight away. Why not the transparency?”Switzerland scored the penalty but Qatar equalised late on (Reuters)Gary Neville was left fuming at Fifa’s decision not to release the replays (Getty)Unkel, host Mark Pougatch and fellow pundits Duncan Ferguson and Ian Wright all appeared to be in agreement with Neville’s bafflement at the replays not being released, with Wright particularly strident. “With the semi-automatic line, why haven’t we seen that?” he queried. “You know what, we actually don’t even need to see it, we see it in the Premier League every week, he looks offside, I just can’t understand it. They do what they want. They’re sitting in the office. It’s scandalous.”Embolo converted the penalty and Switzerland went on to dominate the match but somehow failed to score a second goal, with Abunada making a number of fine saves. And the Swiss were made to pay when, in injury-time at the end of the match, Qatar snatched an unlikely equaliser. Qatari captain Boualem Khoukhi headed home Homam El Amin’s 94th-minute cross to spark wild celebrations among Julen Lopetegui’s squad, as the Asian side earned their first-ever point at a World Cup.

Kouts pitcher Billy Miller shuts down Rossville in Class 1A semi-state
LAFAYETTE — Rossville baseball had the unenviable task of trying to solve Kouts flame thrower Billy Miller.Few have been able to touch the sophomore this season.Through two seasons, Miller has allowed just eight earned runs in more than 106 innings pitched. Last season, he led the Mustangs to a Class A state runner-up finish.By the time 10th-ranked Rossville got to Miller at Loeb Stadium on Saturday, June 13, the Hornets already were in a big hole.Rossville mustered five hits, but Class 1A No. 1 Kouts was equally as impressive offensively as Miller's right arm on the mound in a 9-1 Class 1A north semi-state semifinal victory.Nolan Britt tagged Miller twice, including a run-scoring single in the fifth to bring Eli Barnes across the plate. Rossville ends the season 19-12, including its third regional championship in the past 10 seasons.More: After regional heroics, Central Catholic baseball loses on walk offSam King covers sports for the Journal & Courier.
