THEONION.COMDavid Chase Confirms Tony Soprano Died At End Of Every EpisodeNEW YORK—At last providing a definitive answer to fans’ endless speculation, Sopranos creator and executive producer David Chase confirmed Tuesday that Tony Soprano died at the end of every episode in the series. “People have been asking me for a clear answer for a long, long time, so here it is: Yes, all 86 episodes of the show end with Tony Soprano dying,” the seven-time Emmy winner says in a newly released director’s cut of the behind-the-scenes documentary Wise Guy: David Chase And The Sopranos, revealing that the fictional mob boss was fatally shot, strangled, stabbed, bludgeoned, incinerated, and blown up over and over again throughout the show’s six-season run. “In the first episode, he drowns in the swimming pool. It happens off-screen, of course, but Tony’s 86 deaths are always implied. He is unkillable—well, not unkillable, per se—but the man cannot die. It is the curse of Tony Sorprano. Honestly, I can’t believe I have to spell that out for people. He dies during every episode’s closing credits and is reborn during the opening credits of the next.” Chase went on to add that it was “pretty obvious” if fans simply listened to the lyrics of “Woke Up This Morning.” The post David Chase Confirms Tony Soprano Died At End Of Every Episode appeared first on The Onion.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 21 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
THEONION.COMWoman Dives Headfirst Into Thrilling Adventure By Blindly Purchasing Different Apple VarietyDALLAS—In a bold risk that strayed from her usual habits, local woman Emily Lentz reportedly dove headfirst into a thrilling adventure Wednesday by blindly purchasing a different apple variety. “What crazy times might this Cosmic Crisp have in store for me? I choose to accept its enigmatic offer with open arms,” said Lentz, noting that it had been a year since she tried trying a bite of dragonfruit at the farmers market and her life was due for an unhinged journey. “Well-behaved women seldom make history, and I want to someday be able to gather my grandchildren around me and regale them with the story of how I bought some Pink Ladies without doing any research or sampling beforehand. Even though I have no idea if these apples would taste good in a pie or cobbler, I’m choosing to defy all instincts and just embrace the beautiful mystery they have in store.” At press time, Lentz had reportedly woken up driving 95 mph on the interstate in a stolen car after sampling a single Granny Smith. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMU.S. Open: 100 in a row — Adam Scott's remarkable major streak reaches triple digitsSouthampton, N.Y. — Shortly before this month's Memorial, Adam Scott located Jack Nicklaus to pose for a picture. Scott is about to compete in his 100th consecutive major, which is a pretty astounding achievement even when you consider that Nicklaus topped it. "One hundred," Scott said to Nicklaus, "I feel like it's an eternity. And you've got 46 more! I don't think I'll make that." Nicklaus chuckled as he told the story earlier this month, then paid tribute to Scott's remarkable longevity. "To be prepared and be able to play and stay healthy so you can play is quite an achievement," he said, and he would know, having played in every major from the 1962 Masters to the 1998 Open Championship. And now, Scott is about to join his three-figure territory. Play Golf Pick ‘Em now to make your predictions for the U.S. Open!Golfers have the longest careers of any pro athletes — that's what happens when you're not getting hit or constantly sprinting every day of your professional life — but even by the lengthy standards of a golf career, what Scott is doing right now is absurd. He's avoided injury and the pitfalls of a capricious sport, he's won his way into tournaments and qualified his way in. The only time he hasn't played in four majors in the last quarter-century is when he, and the rest of the golf world, sat at home during what would have been the 2020 Open Championship. Adam Scott played in the 2001 Open Championship, and hasn't missed a single major since.GERRY PENNY via Getty ImagesFor his part, the 45-year-old Scott recognizes the magnitude of the achievement, even if he downplays it a bit. "I think there's some luck in it, but I think I've had generally great advice around me from a physical and training standpoint that's kept me healthy and pretty much injury-free," Scott said earlier this year prior to the Cadillac Championship. "My head's still really in, like I should be able to compete and win these things, so maybe I don't see it as much of an accomplishment. But I guess if you ask someone who is at two majors, it seems like a long way away."In his very first major of the streak, the 2001 Open Championship, Scott placed T47. Since then, he's amassed 20 top-10s, including a victory in 2013 at the Masters. He's placed in the top three seven times, and he's still throwing down red numbers — he finished T10 at the 2024 Open Championship, and last year at the U.S. Open, he was one stroke off the lead heading into the final day at Oakmont. TournamentWinsTop 5Top 10Masters125PGA Championship036U.S. Open013The Open Championship036"It's absolutely incredible," Rory McIlroy said at the Memorial. "I think to even just play 100 majors throughout your career is an amazing achievement, but to play 100 in a row … I just think about the level that you need to be at, and no injuries." There have been close calls. Scott broke his hand shortly before the 2008 U.S. Open, but managed to play anyway, finishing T26. He needed to go through qualifying to reach the 2018 U.S. Open. And he joined the 2024 U.S. Open field as an alternate, ranked 61st when the top 60 were automatic qualifiers. He was added to the field after the suicide of Grayson Murray. . Plus, it's worth noting that the departure of numerous ranked players for LIV has helped ease Scott's path. He's only entitled to an annual exemption into the Masters; he has to play his way into the other three, either by ranking or by strong performances in prior majors. He only has one top-10 performance in the 2020s and one win over that span, the 2020 Genesis three weeks before the world shut down. That means he's needed to play his way into every major through consistent week-to-week performances to stay within the appropriate ranking cutoffs, usually in the top-50 to top-60 range. But hey, once you're in the clubhouse, it all counts. The closest active player to Scott's record? That would be Jordan Spieth, at 52. In other words, Spieth is still 12 years away from matching Scott's record. For the record, Scott would match Nicklaus' streak at the 2038 Masters. For now, though, he'll settle for just winning this week. "Part of me doesn't want to be the guy yet who just has all these other things that aren't based around winning events," Scott laughed. "I would rather win some stuff, and let's celebrate winning the U.S. Open, than just playing in it."0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDo Leeds need Byram and Wober if the club is 'going places'?[Getty Images]BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope has been discussing Leeds United's official released and retained list on the Don't Go To Bed Just Yet podcast, highlighting that Illan Meslier will "probably never go to a club of the same ilk again".The goalkeeper bid farewell to Elland Road after a seven-year spell following the expiration of his latest contract."His message to the fans very much reflected what we spotted at the end of the final home game," Pope said. "He was taking it all in while sitting on the ball in the rain wearing his kit. It was a 'this is it' moment for him."This club will always be a part of him. It is the classic case of a number of players who will leave Leeds United and probably never go to a club of the same size or ilk again. It is sad for him but we wish him all the best."On Sam Byram, who featured in the list of retained names, Pope added: "He only made a few appearances last season, but he showed there is enough there for him to be at least a reasonable back-up."He still looks the part, he still reads the game really well and he is able to adapt to both sides of the pitch as well. It makes sense to add another year onto his contract and then maybe sell him for a bit more."This is a great club to be around at the moment. He will want to be at a Premier League club that, let's be honest, looks like it is going places."On Max Wober's situation, after returning from a season-long loan at Werder Bremen, Pope said: "He hardly played last season. He didn't really fully recover from an injury and then he started playing again in April."He is still under contract so technically he is coming back to Leeds United, but he clearly isn't wanted and isn't rated enough otherwise they wouldn't keep loaning him out."To be quite honest, I had almost forgotten about him. I don't see him suddenly getting a chance at the club. I would be very worried if he was the second-choice left-sided player next season."Listen to the full podcast on BBC Sounds0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDraft Analyst Links Detroit Lions to Brendan SorsbyThe Detroit Lions have one of the NFL’s most stable quarterback situations, which is exactly why a recent suggestion involving supplemental draft prospect Brendan Sorsby caught some attention. With Jared Goff under contract through the 2028 season and firmly entrenched as Detroit’s starter, quarterback is not viewed as a pressing need in Allen Park. Yet one draft analyst believes the Lions could be a logical landing spot for Sorsby if the young signal caller officially enters the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft. The idea is not about replacing Goff. It is about planning for the future.Lions Named Among Potential Fits for Brendan SorsbyDraft analyst Justin Melo recently identified five NFL teams that could make sense for Sorsby, including the Lions, Buccaneers, Colts, Jets, and Cardinals. The 22 year old quarterback is expected to apply for the supplemental draft after his collegiate career was derailed by gambling-related issues that generated significant public scrutiny. The supplemental draft provides an alternative pathway into the NFL for players who become eligible after the traditional draft process has concluded. Teams can bid future draft selections in an effort to acquire eligible prospects. While Sorsby remains an intriguing developmental quarterback, the bigger question is whether Detroit would be willing to spend draft capital on a position that appears secure.Jared Goff Is Still the Lions’ Franchise QuarterbackAny discussion involving another quarterback must begin with Goff. The veteran has helped transform Detroit into a perennial contender since arriving in the blockbuster trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. Under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and now Drew Petzing, Goff has thrived in Detroit’s offensive system. The Lions rewarded him with a long term contract extension, signaling their belief that he remains the quarterback capable of leading the franchise toward a Super Bowl. That reality makes it difficult to envision Detroit investing significant resources into a quarterback prospect unless the organization views him as a long term developmental asset.Still, Melo believes there is logic behind the idea.“Goff is under contract through 2028, but acquiring a young backup wouldn’t be a bad idea,” Melo wrote. What the Lions Have Behind GoffThe Lions currently have veteran Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Luke Altmyer behind Goff on the depth chart.Bridgewater provides experience and leadership, but at 33 years old, he is not viewed as a long term solution.Meanwhile, Altmyer arrived in Detroit as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft. Coaches have already praised his ability to quickly absorb Drew Petzing’s offense, making him an intriguing developmental prospect. That reality may lessen the urgency for Detroit to pursue another young quarterback. The Lions have consistently shown confidence in their ability to develop players within their system, and early reviews of Altmyer’s progress have been encouraging.Would Brendan Sorsby Actually Make Sense? The argument for adding Sorsby centers around value rather than immediate need.Quarterbacks remain one of the league’s most valuable assets, and teams are always searching for developmental players who can either become future contributors or increase their value over time. However, Detroit’s current roster construction suggests the organization is focused on maximizing its championship window. General manager Brad Holmes has repeatedly emphasized building through competition and maintaining roster flexibility.Using future draft capital on a quarterback who may never see the field could be difficult to justify, especially for a team with several areas that may require depth additions throughout the season. That does not mean the Lions will ignore Sorsby entirely. Like every team in the league, Detroit will undoubtedly evaluate the quarterback and determine whether the talent outweighs the potential risk.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWho are the Croatia players England should look out for?[BBC]The durable core of Croatia's side continues to defy the ageing process.Their third place at the 2022 World Cup followed on from being runners-up four years earlier. Six players remain from the 2018 tournament, in which they beat England in the semi-finals, with the majority of the regular midfielders and forwards now well into their 30s.Ranked 11th in the world, Croatia will once more provide a stern test for England in Wednesday's Group L opener.BBC Sport takes a look at five key players England need to watch out for.Luka VuskovicTeenager Luka Vuskovic excelled on loan at Hamburg in 2025-26 [Getty Images]Club: Tottenham Hotspur Age: 19 Position: Defender Caps: 5 Goals: 1The 6ft 4in teenager greatly enhanced his reputation on loan in Germany in 2025-26 as promoted Hamburg finished 13th.Vuskovic was shortlisted for both the Bundesliga player of the season and rookie of the season awards, as voted for by fans, clubs and selected media. He could be the main beneficiary if Croatia play with a three-man defence - his four starts for his country prior to the World Cup all came in the middle of a back three and he scored in the March friendly win over Colombia. Head coach Zlatko Dalic said in April that Vuskovic "will be one of the pillars of our national team for the next 10 years".Fifa World Cup 2026: What you need to know about CroatiaGet football news sent straight to your phoneJosko GvardiolClub: Manchester City Age: 24 Position: Defender Caps: 48 Goals: 4Gvardiol only returned on 13 May after a four-month absence caused by a fractured shinbone in his right leg during a Premier League draw against Chelsea. He started all 14 of Croatia's games across the past three major tournaments, with their opening Euro 2020 defeat by England marking his first start for the national side. It made him Croatia's youngest ever player in a major tournament, aged 19.Gvardiol was hailed as "the best centre-back in the world" by Croatia's head coach Zlatko Dalic during the 2022 World Cup. He played every minute for Croatia in Qatar and gave them the lead with a diving header in the third-place play-off victory over Morocco. He will likely play in central defence if Croatia opt for a back three or else at left-back in a 4-2-3-1 formation.Luka ModricLuka Modric scored in a friendly win over Slovenia earlier this month [Getty Images]Club: AC Milan Age: 40 Position: Midfielder Caps: 198 Goals: 29Croatia's captain and talisman has recovered from a fractured cheekbone on 26 April to stay on course for his 200th cap this summer. He was heavily relied on to dictate the team's tempo in 2025-26 and played his most league minutes (2,788) in a season since 2010-11 with Spurs.A glorious 13 years at Real Madrid began ignominiously when he was voted 'worst signing of 2012' in a poll by Madrid-based sports daily Marca. But Modric more than proved his worth - claiming 28 trophies, including six Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles at Real.Petar SucicClub: Inter Milan Age: 22 Position: Midfielder Caps: 17 Goals: 1An emerging force, Sucic has won the domestic double in his first season in Italy and become a regular in central midfield for Croatia. Leicester City's one-time £9.7m record signing started all seven of Croatia's World Cup games in 2022, scoring twice in a group win against Canada. Kramaric scored 15 goals for Hoffenheim in 2025-26. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSparks return home to play Olivia Miles, Lynx#10 Kelsey Plum of the Los Angeles Sparks defends against the Minnesota Lynx on July 10, 2025 in Los Angeles, CA.LOS ANGELES -- It's been a mixed week for the Los Angeles Sparks. They had a three-game winning streak going into the weekend. It was their first time being over .500 13 games into the season since 2020. Things were looking up.And it all came crashing down at the tail end of their road trip. The Golden State Valkyries continue to be a thorn on the Sparks' side, limiting them to 58 points, their lowest scoring output of the 2026 season. While they're still at .500 (7-7) and they have won three of the last four games, it was not a happy trip back home. But there's not much that can be done except to shake it off and move on to the next round."Go to rest and get back at it tomorrow," Sparks forward Dearica Hamby said after their loss on Monday against the Valkyries. "We got Minnesota (in) two days."Yes, it doesn't get any easier for the Sparks as they face the current top team in the league, the Minnesota Lynx (11-3). Winners of nine of their last 10 games, the Lynx didn't miss a beat even with Napheesa Collier out, who has yet to play a game this year. The Lynx may have lost a lot of very good players in Alanna Smith (free agency to Wings), Jessica Shepard (free agency to Wings), Bridget Carleton (expansion draft to the Fire), and Natisha Hiedeman (free agency to Storm). But they gained a few good ones as well. One of them is their rookie, #2 overall pick of this year's draft, Olivia Miles. There was no doubt about Miles' ability; she had been a top prospect for years. But not sure anybody (but her) saw this coming. Again, no Collier so far this season but Miles has dazzled and led the Lynx to the best record in the league. Pundits expected some dropoff but the Lynx never budged from anything. Miles is averaging 18.1 points per game to lead the team as well as 5.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.5 steals. Because everyone loves to discuss end-of-year awards in the second month of a five-month regular season, here's a take from this humble Sparks beat writer: Miles is not only a Rookie of the Year favorite but also a legit Most Valuable Player candidate at this moment.Courtney Williams was playing point guard for the Lynx in the last two seasons but she has moved to her natural position of shooting guard and it has paid dividends. Williams has more room to work with and is free to roam around. She is averaging a career-best in scoring (16.5 points) and field goal percentage (.495). Kayla McBride has been consistent as ever and is producing her usual perimeter offense (14.2 points). Free agent signing and second-time Lynx player Natasha Howard is back to an increased role to the tune of 17.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest. And with Phee out, Nia Coffey has filled in admirably with career-highs in scoring (8.7 points), rebounding (5.9 rebounds), assists (2.1 dimes), blocked shots (1.4 blocks), and minutes played (26.2 minutes per).Every team strives to be where the Lynx is. Coach Cheryl Reeve has them on top offensively and defensively this season. The heartbreak of the 2025 postseason has made them tougher than ever. That's where the Sparks want to be. While they have a sterling road record at 5-2, they've had trouble at home with a 2-5 slate. To be a top team, the Sparks need to win in L.A."Winning at home is imperative," Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike said last week. "And it's not just because you need a win at home but when it gets down to the season, you're playing for home court advantage because there is an advantage there. We have a very iconic arena as well. There's so much here that the fans bring. It's important that we are able to generate and maintain the focus that it requires to win at home. Because we've shown that we can win on the road. The system is a bit more insular when you're on the road. So we want to be able to create that same focus, laser focus, when we're at home to be able to win."They've already had a difficult time winning in Los Angeles. It's made harder with Minnesota coming in. It's next level with Cameron Brink out for the game due to a left ankle injury suffered in San Francisco. And another obstacle if Kelsey Plum doesn't play, who's deemed questionable because of a lower left leg injury. The team is 1-2 without Plum in the line-up.Still, with or without Plum, Hamby needs to get back to her scoring ways; she's been held to single digits the last three games after scoring double digits for 39 straight games before that. Ogwumike is averaging 12 rebounds her last four games. Ariel Atkins has been great defending the perimeter but has struggled to make a three-pointer recently (2 for 17 in her last four games, .118). If the game gets close, Erica Wheeler can be counted on to make the big shots. And Rae Burrell has given the team a shot in the arm from the bench; she's averaging a career-high 10.6 points per game this season. The Sparks may be at .500 but they are capable of beating a team like the Lynx. It would be huge for their confidence. Can it be done? That's why basketball games are played on the court and not on the internet.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMost LGBTQ+ people say they’re hiding more at work as corporate America is dialing back supportA new poll from Harris coinciding with Pride Month indicates that LGBTQ+ employees are feeling the same chill the current administration’s attacks on DEI and the community itself are having on American society more broadly, with a majority of LGBTQ+ workers saying they are now self-censoring at work. 62% of LGBTQ+ employees have noticed at least one meaningful change in how their employers communicate about LGBTQ+ staff or issues, including more cautious language, more focus on legal compliance than belonging, and less internal or public communication around diversity and LGBTQ+ issues. Related Costco tells shareholders not to cave under right-wing pressure to ban DEI The findings suggest that LGBTQ+ support at work is not disappearing in one dramatic move, analysts say. Instead, many employees see it becoming quieter, more cautious, and less visible. That silence is starting to affect how workers judge their employers, the poll shows. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “Corporate silence does not feel neutral to employees,” says Tim Osiecki, director of thought leadership and trends at The Harris Poll. “When companies get quieter about LGBTQ+ support, LGBTQ+ workers may read that as a signal about whether leadership will stand by them when the conversation gets harder. That can affect how open they feel at work, how much they trust leadership, and whether they see a future at the company.” The poll surveyed more than 3,000 employed U.S. adults, including 650 LGBTQ+ employees and 2,432 non-LGBTQ+ employees. Dialed-back support from the top has employees self-censoring, the data indicates. 64% of LGBTQ+ employees say they have self-censored or changed their behavior because of the current social or political climate around LGBTQ+ issues at work. That includes avoiding personal conversations, staying quiet when LGBTQ+ issues come up, or becoming more careful about what they share with coworkers. Four in 10 LGBTQ+ employees say workplace conversations about issues that impact LGBTQ+ employees are declining, or never even started. A company’s reaction to the current political climate affects LGBTQ+ employees’ trust in their workplace, the poll shows. 80% of LGBTQ+ employees say they are less likely to trust a company that becomes quieter about LGBTQ+ inclusion, and 68% say they would leave a company if they felt it no longer supported LGBTQ+ employees. Less support could translate to lost LGBTQ+ talent, as well as other staff concerned about how their company supports all employees. Among non-LGBTQ+ employees, 62% say that their workplace’s treatment of LGBTQ+ employees says something about how it treats employees overall, while the same number say they trust leadership more when inclusion efforts are consistent, even during backlash. 60% say support for LGBTQ+ employees makes the workplace feel more welcoming for everyone. “Support for LGBTQ+ colleagues is a broader signal of how the company treats people overall,” said Osiecki. “For employers, this is not just about Pride Month or internal communications. It is about trust, leadership credibility, and whether employees believe the company’s values hold up under pressure.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMU.S. Open: Picks to win include the obvious and not-so obviousWho's going to win the 126th U.S. Open? Can we pick Shinnecock Hills? Because it's going to.There have been five U.S. Opens held there. Exactly three players have finished under par, making it the dream course for the USGA, which gets full-on euphoric seeing over-par rounds.Play Golf Pick 'Em now to make your predictions for the U.S. Open! The course isn't supposed to play anywhere close to easy this week, with winds gusting and, consequently, greens drying out. With that said, here are our picks to win:Jay Busbee: Scottie SchefflerSure, he's in what qualifies for him as a slump — "only" one win for him this year. But Scheffler is in position to claim the career grand slam, and on his birthday, no less ... two facts you're sure to hear about all week. This course sets up well for his strengths off the tee, and he's smart enough to think his way around it when sheer brute force won't do. Scheffler wins, claims the career grand slam, and then we can go back to wondering if Jordan Spieth and/or Phil Mickelson will ever complete the career grand slam. (No.)Ryan Young: Cameron YoungLook, it's time. Cameron Young, who almost always seems to be in the mix, will claim his first major championship title this week. The man has been incredibly consistent, with six top-10 finishes and a pair of wins already this season, and climbed up to No. 3 in the world. He even led the Masters briefly earlier this year before finishing in third, and he finished in fourth last season at the U.S. Open after having to play his way in. He's going to break through eventually. What better place to do that than at home in New York?Jay Hart: Russell Henley To win at Shinnecock is going to take some extreme scrambling, and there is not a better scrambler in the game right now than Henley. Pair that with his driving accuracy — hitting 71.89% of fairways off the tee, tops in all of the PGA Tour — and Henley is set up well to win his first ever major. And don't think this would be a Cinderella story … Henley is, after all, ranked No. 5 in the world.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

Their nine-man side fell 2-0 to cohosts Mexico in a chaotic contest in Mexico City.As they fly to the United States, both bruised teams will hope to bounce back and stay in the hunt for the knockout stages at the 48-team tournament. Here is all to know about the Czechia vs South Africa matchup:Under-pressure Czechs can’t afford a loss against South AfricansCzechia’s rugged, set piece-reliant game failed against South Korea’s fluid, possession-based football despite captain Ladislav Krejci scoring the opening goal. With Group A table toppers Mexico posing a more complex challenge in their final group fixture, the Czechs know their best chance of securing three points will be against Bafana Bafana on Thursday.“Against South Africa, we have to get it right,” defender Jaroslav Zeleny said.“Mexico will probably be a tougher challenge afterwards, so we have to give everything in the match against South Africa and absolutely make sure we win it.”Czechia players pose for a team photo before their World Cup 2026 opening match against South Korea [File: Paul Childs/Reuters]Before the Czech Republic and Slovakia became separate countries, confederated Czechoslovakia was for many years one of the best teams in Europe and finished World Cup runners-up in 1934 and 1962. Since then, the Czechia’s record has been poor with only four tournament appearances and progression to the knockout stages only once – a quarterfinal run in 1990.The Czechs, back at the tournament after 20 long years, need a much-improved performance to keep their World Cup dreams alive in North America.South Africa out to silence critics after Mexico disappointmentWith millions of fans watching from across the world, South Africa played Mexico in the tournament opener, bringing back memories of the 2010 edition’s opening game. But unlike the result in their home World Cup opener 16 years ago, South Africa suffered a crushing defeat this time. And while that was not unexpected against a solid Mexican side playing in front of a partisan home crowd, what disappointed fans back home was the poor display by the South African team. Two red cards, two goals conceded and a below-par fight drew widespread criticism in South Africa with everything from the individual displays to the tactics of their coach, Hugo Broos, under the spotlight.Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio shows a red card to South Africa’s midfielder Themba Zwane during the 2026 World Cup Group A match against Mexico [Yuri Corte/AFP]“Something that I’ve picked up is that South Africans are happy when you win, but when you lose, you are the worst. That is a fact,” winger Thapelo Maseko said.“We have big players with heart, and if there is anyone out there doubting this team, they’d better think again.”After impressive results by their African counterparts – Morocco, Cape Verde, Egypt and the Ivory Coast – the pressure is on Bafana Bafana to play catch-up.Czechia vs South Africa predictionStats provider Opta’s supercomputer has given the Czechia a 54.9 percent probability of winning this fixture. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDetroit Lions Minicamp Watchlist: Injuries with Residual ConcernsPreviously on Lions Wire, I listed ten players to watch in Lions minicamp who are recovering from injury. Now, here are Lions' players who have recovered from significant injury, but carry lingering question marks. #1 Thomas Harper, SInjury: Two concussions (December 2025)Thomas Harper concussion video-Takes hip to head in 1st clip which I suspect is main cause of concussion. -3 plays later takes another hit and appears to stagger getting up. Left game after that.-2nd concussion of szn which almost certainly puts him out for season finale pic.twitter.com/DC1zYzb1qp— Jimmy Liao MD | Detroit Lions Morning Rounds (@JimmyLiaoMD) December 28, 2025Thomas Harper concussion video-Hard hit to side of head-Clear, obvious signs of concussion with difficulty getting up and wobbly when standing. Will be out for game. pic.twitter.com/qSuHXKcXcc— Jimmy Liao MD | Detroit Lions Morning Rounds (@JimmyLiaoMD) December 5, 2025As you can see in the injury videos, both of Harper’s concussions have the same mechanism - lowering his head and taking a leg to the right side of his helmet. There are multiple concerns moving forward:A possible lowered concussion threshold.A prolonged absence with the next concussion. The need to change his tackling technique which could decrease his effectiveness.Look for Harper to focus on a heads-up tackling technique during practice.#2 Ennis Rakestraw, CBInjury: Shoulder surgery (August 2025)This third-year CB gets the dubious distinction of being on both Part 1 (current illness) and Part 2 (shoulder) of the minicamp watchlist. After two straight seasons marred by injuries, Rakestraw has reportedly added some bulk to his frame to help deal with the physical nature of the NFL.#3 Levi Onwuzurike, DTInjury: ACL surgery (~May 2025)After signing a 1-year free agent deal with $3.5M guaranteed in the 2025 offseason, Onwuzurike underwent ACL surgery about a month later. The curious timing of how that played out made me question the Lions’ interest in retaining him after his contract tolled. The fact that the Lions are giving him a chance means that the ACL recovery must be going smoothly. However, there can be a lag in full recovery from an ACL, which might make the difference between Levi making the roster or not.#4 Giovanni Manu, OLInjury: Knee (October 2025)A practice knee injury wiped out the rest of Manu’s 2025 season. There are no details regarding the knee injury, but residuals are always a possibility - especially if cartilage was involved. Entering his third year, this could be make-or-break time for him.For nine more players on the watchlist, see Lions 2026 Minicamp Watchlist: Residual Concerns..For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDon’t be fooled. NFL isn’t saving college sports. It’s protecting itself | OpinionWould you look at that, the NFL has decided to weigh in on the great college sports debate. It should come as no surprise to anyone that the multi-billion dollar corporation benefiting greatly from college football's free farm system has decided that, yes, college sports — which, practically speaking, means college football — needs federal help to keep its house in order. Federal assistance that will limit player earning power, and movement. The very things the NFL tries to quash during every Collective Bargaining Agreement with its players. Toppmeyer: Foreign tennis players could hurt college QBs' payday. Here's whyOp-ed: Federal antitrust protection is only workable path to saving college sportsThe NFL, NFLPA and NBAPA all sent letters to Congress on Tuesday, June 16 extolling the virtues of everyone working together in peace and harmony to find answers to fix college sports. The players associations of the two leagues support the Protect College Sports Act because it provides medical and healthcare benefits, a less publicized but important factor in the bill. The NFL, everyone, has its own agenda. I’m no mind reader, but my guess is the NFL isn’t too thrilled about drafting players who are — how can I say this? — more hungry for money and social fame than the grind of football. The free farm system of decades past has become a babysitters club of the biggest and brightest divas. The NFL is wasting developmental time getting a group of pandered, me-first players acclimated to you’re about ready to get your ass kicked in a real job. It’s a short leap from no rules to no accountability. And the NFL just can’t have that.Life was easier for all involved when the No. 1 question recruits had for college coaches was how quickly can you get me to the NFL? Players wanted to compete at the highest level of football, and wanted to earn in the process. Now the first question college coaches hear is how quickly can I make my first million? Or millions.Reaching the NFL, playing with the best of the best, has become secondary. When the drive and desire to be and play with the best is stagnated by cash and attention at the college level, the NFL product suffers. There’s a reason the NFL has a three-year rule for entry into its exclusive league. You can’t enter the NFL Draft until you’re three years removed from high school graduation.Again, that’s not an NCAA rule, it’s an NFL rule. Why, you ask?Because the NFL gets free development from college football. If the NFL had no age requirement, it would be dealing with the same maturity issues now plaguing college football — to say nothing of eliminating the critical benefit of players who leave campus three years later with a completely changed physical body and a greater understanding of the game.UNC's dilemma: Jordon Hudson's FOIA crusade adds more chaos to UNC's Bill Belichick messNFL bound: Brendan Sorsby drama ends, but not before tearing college football apartBut there’s the NFL, in its infinite wisdom, sending a letter to Congress that says, “Healthy, stable, and thriving collegiate athletics is essential to the future of American sports, including Olympic sports. By utilizing proven models like the voluntary pooling of media rights under the Sports Broadcasting Act, which supports broad, fan-friendly distribution of NFL games, this legislation will support college athletics and ensure fans will be able to access their favorite games across today's changing media landscape." I’m gonna puke. The NFL, the most successful professional sports league on the planet, knows damn well pooling media rights is a crapshoot. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t. It works famously for the NFL because it has 32 mouths to feed, not 138 — and the 138 also have Olympic sports to supplement. It works for the NFL because a limited amount of games create demand for an elite product. You know, like the limited amount of Big Ten and SEC games creates demand for their product.Ask the NFL if it wants Congress in its business, half demanding a free and open market, and the other half desperate for collective bargaining. Ask the NFL if it wants Congress to inform the league that it will pool media rights with the United Football League, and the Arena League and its various counterparts, to supplement their growth and expansion. The NFL doesn’t care about Olympic sports, the NFL cares about football. Their product has become more difficult to manage in the NIL era, and throwing their weight at anything that could limit earning and movement for college players is a win. Player movement is a big problem, easily the No. 1 issue facing college football. Free movement drives up salaries, and roster salary caps have exploded from Ohio State’s $20 million investment in 2024, to Texas, LSU, Oregon, Ohio State and a few others in the $40 million range two years later. This has nothing to do with NIL, and everything to do with free player movement. The NFL has heavy restrictions on free player movement — first round picks are locked in for as many as five years — and the last thing it needs is a bunch of free-wheeling players joining their league with thoughts of movement. Because it may not happen immediately, but the current NFL CBA ends in 2030, and a strong percentage of players in the league will have gone through the Wild, Wild West days of college football. And suddenly, the bargaining dynamic changes. The last thing the NFL’s billion dollar ATM wants or needs is a player strike. It’s a lot easier to get 1,700 players to strike because they want greater movement flexibility (or more money) than it is for college football players to coalesce and get more than 14,000 to walk out.So yeah, the NFL isn’t exactly doing this out of the goodness of its saving American sports heart. It’s doing it selfishly.Which places it in the same boat as everyone else in this twisted game. Matt Hayes is the senior national college football writer for USA TODAY Sports Network. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHands off: Liverpool send ’emphatic’ message to Real Madrid and PSG over ‘fantastic’ stalwartHands off: Liverpool send ’emphatic’ message to Real Madrid and PSG over ‘fantastic’ stalwartLiverpool have sent a firm message to several European heavyweights who are reportedly considering a summer swoop for one of their key players. One of the few positives from the 2025/26 season for the Reds was the performances of Dominik Szoboszlai, who was consistently reliable throughout the campaign even despite being redeployed as an emergency right-back on several occasions.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYJamie Carragher described the Hungarian’s displays in recent months as ‘fantastic‘, and with just two years remaining on his contract, some of Europe’s biggest clubs are seemingly beginning to sense an opportunity to raid the Merseysiders for him.Liverpool emphatically refusing to consider selling SzoboszlaiAccording to a report from TEAMtalk, the Liverpool midfielder has attracted the attention of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, but in an ’emphatic’ message to that quartet, Anfield chiefs are adamant that they won’t entertain any offers for the 25-year-old.The Hungarian is viewed internally as a ‘cornerstone’ of Andoni Iraola’s squad, and club officials remain confident that a new contract will be agreed with the player in the foreseeable future, perhaps even before the start of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustSzoboszlai would merit a bumper new contract at LiverpoolSzoboszlai reportedly had an agreement in principle regarding a commitment to a long-term contract back in January, but no such deal has yet been confirmed, leaving his future somewhat in the balance now that we’re into the summer. He still has two years remaining on his current terms, so there isn’t a pressing urgency to resolve his situation as of yet, but it’s also something that Liverpool won’t want to linger into 2027, especially after months of back-and-forth with Ibrahima Konate failed to yield an agreement. The Frenchman’s exit – along with those of Mo Salah and Andy Robertson – will free up just over £700,000 from the weekly wage bill at Anfield, and a portion of those funds could justifiably be put towards making our number 8 one of the best-paid players at the club. Figures from Capology show that nine teammates for next season earn more than his £120,000 per week. While the situation remains unresolved, the likes of Real Madrid and PSG will continue to hover annoyingly like a persistent wasp, just waiting for their moment to spot a potential opportunity to pounce for Szoboszlai.Liverpool must remain steadfast in their refusal to sell the Hungarian, and ideally they can soon agree a new contract to bring him in line with the top earners at Anfield, a status of which he’d be worthy based on his performances over the past year.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COM“Singing activist” Gregory Marks’ had a long career helping LGBTQ+ people mournWhenever people ask Gregory Marks, “When did you come out?” it earns a laugh from the retired opera singer. “I’ve always been out. I didn’t have a dramatic reveal or a tortured confession. I was simply a fat queer kid who knew exactly who he was,” he tells LGBTQ Nation. Related “Crying in my arms”: People are moved to tears as these dads come to Pride to play catch And what he wanted to do: sing. “I was always a performer — onstage in school plays, singing in choirs, dancing in show choir, and playing piano and flute. My mother took the flute as an early sign that I might be ‘a bit off,’ and she wasn’t wrong,” the longtime San Franciscan says. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today His career as a professional opera singer began long before he ever stepped on a stage, however. “It started in my father’s butcher shop. My dad was a Portuguese immigrant with a distinctly European sensibility — gentle and artistic. Every Saturday morning, while he trimmed meat and greeted customers, we listened to the Texaco Metropolitan Opera broadcasts together. He would patiently tell me the stories, and I was absolutely transfixed. Those mornings were my first masterclasses.” Marks followed up those lessons with a music major at San Francisco State University, where he joined the College Opera Guild and saw every production at San Francisco Opera, including, in 1977, the very first performance by Luciano Pavarotti singing his legendary rendition of “Nessun Dorma” in Turandot. After earning a master’s in music, Marks joined the San Francisco Opera Chorus, “where I spent 24 glorious seasons as a proud union chorister singing with the greatest artists of the late 20th century.” It was his time with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, however, that earned Marks his favored moniker: “Singing activist.” “Being a ‘singing activist’ is one of the great joys and privileges of my life. It’s the moment when my literal voice becomes my political voice — when the sound coming out of my body aligns with what I believe in, what I fight for, and who I am. Singing becomes more than music. It becomes testimony,” Marks says. His first real encounter with singing activism happened hours after Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were shot at City Hall in 1978. “I was at the candlelight march that ended on the steps of City Hall, where the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus sang publicly for the very first time. They performed Mendelssohn’s Lord, Thou Art My Refuge. Not exactly a queer anthem, but the very act of a gay chorus singing in public, on that night and in that moment, was pure defiance. It was the birth of the gay chorus movement, and it was the first time I understood that singing could be a form of resistance.” Mourning in song was a necessary ritual into the 1980s and 90’s, at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in San Francisco.“As an opera singer then, I sang at more funerals and memorials than I can count. If I didn’t sing for my friends, who would? Music became the only way I could express my grief, my rage, and my love. But they were wrapped in beauty, because beauty was the one thing the virus couldn’t take from us.” In 2013, Marks’ career and activism and his dad’s Saturday morning opera lessons aligned when he and a team from the Gay Men’s Chorus commissioned composer Andrew Lippa to write the oratorio, I Am Harvey Milk. “It was the greatest piece I ever had the privilege to sing with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus,” Marks says. “To witness a work like that being born, and to know it would become part of our community’s musical DNA, was one of the greatest joys of my life. “I Am Harvey Milk isn’t just music,” Marks says. “It’s memory. It’s activism. It’s a love letter to a man who changed the world, and to the movement that rose from his courage. Every time I’ve sung it, I’ve felt Harvey’s spirit in the room — hopeful, stubborn, joyful, and absolutely unwilling to be erased.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'I would have dropped Vaibhav Sooryavanshi': Sanjay Manjrekar slams teenager after on-field clashFormer India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has weighed in on the recent on-field altercation involving teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, stating that he would have left the youngster out of India A's latest match against Afghanistan A as a disciplinary measure. The incident took place earlier this week during the fourth match of the Tri-Nation A Series between India A and Sri Lanka A. Tensions boiled over after Sri Lanka A clinched victory in the Super Over. Television footage showed Sooryavanshi charging towards the Sri Lankan players and shoving Vishen Halambage following the conclusion of the match.Reports later revealed that Halambage had been sledging the 15-year-old throughout the series. Despite that, Manjrekar maintained that physical confrontations on the cricket field are unacceptable and should carry consequences.“If I was India A coach or manager I would have left Vaibhav Suryavanshi out for this game v AFG. Only to let him know that’s it’s not OK to get physical on the field. Whatever the provocations,” Manjrekar wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The situation escalated when Halambage approached both Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge after Sri Lanka A's Super Over victory. The confrontation intensified before Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella stepped in and helped calm tempers. 131793211According to Cricbuzz, Halambage had repeatedly targeted Sooryavanshi with verbal remarks during the series. One of the comments directed at the youngster was: “Go home, this is not the IPL.”Meanwhile, Sooryavanshi's difficult run in the Tri-Nation Series continued in India's match against Afghanistan A. The left-hander scored 38 off 28 deliveries but once again failed to convert his start into a significant innings. He survived an early dismissal when a catch was not cleanly taken and was handed another reprieve soon after through a dropped chance. However, after finding some rhythm, he eventually gifted his wicket away. The youngster has yet to register a half-century in the tournament, with scores of 14, 44, 21 and 38 in four outings despite arriving for the series on the back of a sensational IPL 2026 campaign.Recently, Sooryavanshi earned a place in India's senior T20I squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England, becoming the youngest player ever selected for the national team and surpassing a 36-year-old record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar. The teenager enjoyed a remarkable IPL 2026 season, amassing 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.31 and collecting multiple individual awards along the way.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMU.S. Open 2026: Jackson Koivun leads the 20 amateurs competing this week at Shinnecock HillsThere are a whopping 20 amateurs in the field this week at the U.S. Open, and a win for one of them isn't totally out of the question. It just hasn't happened in a very, very long time. An amateur has won the U.S. Open fives times in the event's history, most recently with John Goodman's win in 1933. Now, close to 100 years later, golf is very different. But there are several amateurs in the field this week at Shinnecock Hills outside of New York who are worth keeping an eye on. Jackson Koivun is the top-ranked amateur in the world, and he's going to turn pro after this week. He's helped lead Auburn to two national titles, and is currently ranked No. 28 in the world in true strokes gained. He also holds a 68.89 scoring average, which is the best in NCAA history.Play Golf Pick ‘Em now to make your predictions for the U.S. Open! There's also Miles Russell, a high schooler who won his local qualifier with Charlie Woods on the bag for him. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRich Eisen a fan of Dolphins rebuild so farEAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY - DECEMBER 7: De'Von Achane #28 of the Miami Dolphins scores a touchdown during the first quarter against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on December 7, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Kathryn Riley/Getty Images) | Getty Images The 2026 version of the Miami Dolphins will look vastly different than the team of the last few seasons. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is gone. Wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are gone. Bradley Chubb is gone. Minkah Fitzpatrick is gone. And so on, and so forth…While some in the media are questioning the direction of the team under new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, one prominent national radio host thinks the Dolphins are going about their latest rebuild attempt in the right way. Yesterday, on the aptly named Rich Eisen Show, Eisen and his co-host, Chris Brockman, discussed Miami’s offseason moves. While Brockman couldn’t understand some of the Dolphins’ moves — namely the Jaylen Waddle trade — Eisen spoke positively about what Sullivan has accomplished in his short stint with Miami thus far. “Why am I just thinking the Dolphins are getting what they’re doing right?” questioned Eisen.“I wouldn’t sit here and say that the Dolphins aren’t eager to win or doing the right thing because they let Jaylen Waddle go. It kind of makes sense,” continued Eisen. “Tear it down to the ground and start up again.”Eisen also defended Miami giving running back De’Von Achane a big money extension despite the fact that the team let so many other stars depart. “He’s a home-run hitter… I love Achane. I wouldn’t trade him [in] a million years — and they’re not going to. And they didn’t. That’s the one you hold onto.”While it can be difficult to be a fan of a rebuilding team — we, as Dolphins fans know that all too well — hearing a highly respected sports journalist and broadcaster like Rich Eisen take up for Miami should give supporters hope that the organization is headed in the right direction… even if that broadcaster is a diehard New York Jets fan.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMyles Garrett not pressing Aaron Donald to return, but Andrew Whitworth isIf Aaron Donald made his phone number public, he would get hundreds of thousands of texts from Los Angeles Rams fans begging him to come back. One person who’s not pressuring him into a return, though, is the same person who caused Donald to even consider coming back.Ever since the Rams acquired Myles Garrett from the Browns, rumors of Donald’s return have swirled. But Garrett isn’t urging the three-time Defensive Player of the Year to come out of retirement. Garrett said on the “New Heights” podcast that he doesn’t want to press Donald, allowing him to “find that spark” himself."I don't want to press him," Garrett said when asked if he’s talked to Donald about a return. "Because I want him to find that spark."That’s when Andrew Whitworth chimed in and said he’s texting Donald every day about playing again.“I’m pressing him full court,” Whitworth said. “I’m just telling y’all right now. I text him every day.”Garrett said Donald left the game of football fulfilled, so he’s not sure what else he could possibly accomplish in the NFL."He walked away from the game feeling so fulfilled, just like, 'Man, I've done everything, I've won everything, I've beat everybody.' It's like, 'All right, I don't need anything more,’” he said. That being said, if Donald decides to suit up again, Garrett will happily welcome him to the defensive line."If he looks up and he's like, 'Huh. I might need another one.’ And he's like, 'MG, you wanna run it?' Sure, why not?” Garrett said.Even though the Rams don’t necessarily need Donald, he would certainly make them better. A defensive front that features Garrett, Donald, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, Poona Ford and Byron Young might just be the best in the league, potentially putting the Rams over the top as the Super Bowl favorites.Eric Dickerson thinks Donald should stay retired because he’s got nothing left to prove, but winning a second ring would be the perfect Hollywood ending to his illustrious career. This article originally appeared on Rams Wire: Rams' Myles Garrett not pressing Aaron Donald to return for 20260 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘There is no acrimony, no anger’ – Lens sporting director reacts to Pierre Sage’s Crystal Palace move‘There is no acrimony, no anger’ – Lens sporting director reacts to Pierre Sage’s Crystal Palace moveDespite leading RC Lens to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and winning the Coupe de France, Pierre Sage will not be on the touchline at the Stade Bollaert as the club prepare to host UEFA Champions League football.Instead, he will be at Selhurst Park. It was confirmed on Monday that Sage is the new Crystal Palace manager. He left Lens after just one season – a highly successful season – but despite the surprising turn of events, the Ligue 1 club’s sporting director, Benjamin Parrot, said that there was “no acrimony, no anger” towards the new Crystal Palace manager. He added, “Our daily life is about managing offers, managing potential departures, potential arrivals. Before in football, that only concerned players but in the world of modern football, that also includes managers.”Parrot said that there were also no “regrets” that more of a financial effort was not made to retain Sage. “We wish him the best. We won’t forget what he achieved. We will still be positive about this magnificent season and now it’s time for what comes next,” added Lens’ sporting director. What comes next for Les Sang et Or is Dino Toppmoller. The German, the former manager of Eintracht Frankfurt, has been brought in to replace Sage and lead the club ahead of their European campaign next season.GFFN | Luke Entwistle0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMFox hosts force JD Vance to eat “pickle cake” as part of bizarre anti-gay jokeJD Vance was on Fox News’ The Five yesterday to promote his book about religion. As the segment ended, host Jesse Watters – who is obsessed with performing heterosexual masculinity – noted that it was National Fudge Day, said that that’s “too gay,” and so instead he had the vice president eat an unusual cake. “It’s National Fudge Day for the VP but I thought it would be too gay so I did pickle cake instead,” Watters said. “I’m not sure if I got it right.” Related Pete Buttigieg slams JD Vance repeatedly: “He tends not to be very successful” Vance laughed at the elaborate gay joke. “And enjoy your pickle cake,” Dana Perino said as she thanked Vance for appearing on the show. The pickle cake itself went viral about a month ago after a New York City pastry shop posted a picture of the cake to social media. The New York Post covered the cake as a product of social media, noting that pickles are trending in 2026.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
WWW.404MEDIA.COICE Appears to Be Buying Immigrants’ Tax Identifiers from a Data BrokerImmigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) appears to be purchasing records related to immigrants’ tax identifiers from a data broker, potentially skirting a court order that banned ICE from sourcing such information, according to Senator Ron Wyden and government procurement records reviewed by 404 Media. The contract, worth nearly $10 million, is related to ITINs, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, which is the identifier many undocumented people use to file their taxes rather than a Social Security number (SSN).“It looks for all the world like Trump is trying to skirt the law and a court order to fuel his mass-deportation campaign,” Senator Wyden told 404 Media in an emailed statement after reviewing the procurement records. “A court has already struck down an agreement between the IRS and Homeland Security to illegally share ITINs and other personal information. A contract to buy that same information from private data brokers is a clear end-around both taxpayer privacy laws and a court order.”💡Do you know anything else about this contract? Do you work at a company handling ITINs? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.The contract, signed on June 5 with Thundercut Technology LLC, is for “ITIN data subscription and analytics for HSI agents in fraud investigations.” It is not clear what exact data is part of this subscription—be that names and addresses of people who have ITINs, or just the ITINs themselves—but ITINs are an important identifier that the IRS gives to undocumented and other people who cannot get a SSN. Undocumented people pay tens of billions of dollars in taxes. ‘Fraud’ has been a common justification for ICE’s activity during the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign. Part of ICE’s and other parts of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) large scale operation through Minnesota last year was to investigate claims of fraud among Somalian immigrants. Nearly 90 percent of HSI, encompassing more than 6,000 officials, have been reassigned from the subagency’s normal responsibilities, like investigating money laundering or child abuse, to immigration enforcement, according to data obtained by the Cato Institute.Screenshots of the procurement record. The contract is for $9,968,353.56. Thundercat is an established vendor and often resells other companies’ technology or surveillance tech to the U.S. Thundercat did not respond to a request for comment, and it is not clear which company Thundercat may be reselling a product from in this instance.Over the last year or so ICE has been trying to get access to data held by the IRS on undocumented people. The two agencies originally came to an agreement in April 2025, in which the IRS would give ICE taxpayer identification numbers and last known addresses on more than 1.2 million people, Politico reported. In November a judge temporarily blocked that data sharing, saying the practice was “unlawful,” NBC News reported. In February, a second judge blocked it again, saying the arrangement may “significantly raise the risk of misidentification of taxpayers,” FedScoop reported. A report from the Taxpayer Inspector General for Tax Administration found that the IRS failed to consistently and accurately match taxpayer information with ICE’s own records, Politico reported this month. The IRS admitted it inappropriately shared information with ICE, the report added.ICE and other parts of DHS have repeatedly purchased access to data rather than collecting it themselves or sourcing it via a search warrant or similar legal mechanism. Both ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have purchased smartphone location data. 404 Media previously reported ICE purchased access to a tool called Webloc that lets the agency monitor phones in entire neighborhoods. ICE previously bought access to phone, water, electricity, and other utility data before that data selling stopped. This practice of buying data rather than sourcing it with a court order is sometimes referred to as the data broker loophole.“The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was on the verge of closing this loophole before Trump killed the agency and blocked that new rule from going into effect. The next administration should close that loophole for good,” Senator Wyden’s statement added.DHS acknowledged a request for comment more than a week ago but ultimately did not provide a statement.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Yaxel Lendeborg impresses during pre-draft workout with WarriorsWith the NBA draft quickly approaching, it is still a mystery as to what Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the Golden State Warriors have planned for the No. 11 overall selection in next Tuesday's draft. Throughout draft season, the Warriors have been linked to a flurry of different prospects. In each mock draft, the Warriors appear to be attached to a new name. Yet, one player appears to be standing out after a recent pre-draft workout. According to Anthony Slater of ESPN, the Warriors brass that was in attendance for Yaxel Lendeborg's pre-draft workout in the Bay Area were impressed by the Michigan Wolverine wing. Via ESPN: Michigan wing Yaxel Lendeborg was in San Francisco last week. Mixed into a group of otherwise second-round prospects, Lendeborg unsurprisingly impressed those in attendance, team sources said, solidifying an internal belief that he's a 6-foot-9 plug-and-play frontcourt option for a team that desperately needs skilled size. "The fit is so obvious," one team source said.Read Slater's full piece with ESPN here.Lendeborg has been one of the top prospects to head to the Bay Area for a pre-draft workout. Following his on-court work, Lendeborg spoke with members of the media and discussed what he would bring to Golden State, along with his fit alongside Steph Curry.Yaxel Lendeborg spoke to the media after working out with Golden State, revealing his plans to impact the team during the 2026-27 season.📸 Jeffrey Becker, Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images https://t.co/plsyHSTrvfpic.twitter.com/SNAubfolZ2— Warriors Wire (@TheWarriorsWire) June 14, 2026Lendeborg, at 24-years-old, is one of the older prospects likely to be selected in the lottery in the 2026 draft class. The Warriors won't take Lendeborg off the board because of his age, but "it will be part of the calculus when the Warriors are on the clock," per Slater. Via ESPN: Lendeborg's age, team sources said, doesn't disqualify him. He's a real option at the 11th spot. But it will be part of the calculus when the Warriors are on the clock, especially in a loaded lottery where a few intriguing prospects several years younger should fall.Prior to leading Michigan to a national championship, Lendeborg played three seasons of junior college basketball and two seasons at UAB in the American Conference. When Lendeborg got to Michigan, he flourished under Dusty May, becoming a consensus All-American and the Big 10 Player of the Year. With the Wolverines, the 6-foot-9 forward averaged 15.1 points on 51.5% shooting from the field and 37.2% from beyond the arc to go along with 6.8 boards, 3.2 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.1 steals per contest. Lendeborg will continue be a name to monitor heading into the first round of Tuesday's NBA Draft. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMaple Leafs hire their next head coach, and the pressure is already onThe Toronto Maple Leafs have officially found their next bench boss. On Wednesday, the organization announced the hiring of Jim Hiller as the franchise’s new head coach, ending a lengthy search that followed one of the most disappointing hockey seasons in the team’s recent history. Hiller becomes the 41st head coach in Maple Leafs history, taking over a club that is suddenly facing a very different reality than it was just a few years ago.For nearly a decade, Toronto was viewed as one of the NHL’s most consistent playoff teams. That all changed this past season when the Maple Leafs endured a disastrous campaign that left them near the bottom of the standings and ultimately resulted in the franchise winning the NHL Draft Lottery. Now, the organization is hoping Hiller can help lead the turnaround.MORE: Mitch Marner hit with familiar ‘disappeared’ criticism after Golden Knights’ lossStrong Resume Behind the BenchMar 11, 2019; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach Jim Hiller talks to head coach Mike Babcock on the bench in the third period against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Scotiabank Arena. The Lightning beat the Maple Leafs 6-2. Mandatory Credit: Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY SportsThe 57-year-old arrives in Toronto after spending the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Kings organization. After beginning as an assistant coach, Hiller was promoted to head coach during the 2023-24 season and remained in the role through 2025-26.During his time behind the Kings’ bench, Hiller posted an impressive 93-58-24 record across 175 games, good for a .600 winning percentage. His teams consistently remained competitive and established a reputation for structured, disciplined hockey. Before joining Los Angeles, Hiller spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders. Toronto fans may also remember him from his previous stint with the Maple Leafs organization from 2015-16 through 2018-19, when he served as an assistant coach. During those four seasons, the Leafs reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs three times.Pressure Comes With the JobNo coaching position in hockey comes with more scrutiny than in Toronto, and Hiller is stepping into a situation filled with expectations despite the team’s recent struggles. The Maple Leafs are attempting to transition from one of the league’s biggest disappointments back into a contender. Winning the draft lottery provides hope for the future, but turning that potential into wins will be Hiller’s responsibility.Toronto believes it has found the right leader to guide the next chapter of the franchise. Now comes the difficult part: proving that the organization can quickly return to relevance and eventually back into the Stanley Cup Playoff picture. For Hiller, the challenge begins immediately.— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories on The Big Lead —0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior

The Spanish-Georgian suffered his first-ever loss, as he retired on his stool before the final round against Justin Gaethje. In the aftermath, Crawford took aim at Topuria, who previously expressed a desire to box the modern great.Conor McGregor after breaking his leg in 2021 (Getty)“This the guy that said he would knock me out and whoop me and Shakur [Stevenson] at the same time?” Crawford tweeted, alongside three laughing emojis.McGregor, despite having traded barbs with Topuria in the past, defended his fellow mixed martial artist, replying to Crawford: “What the f*** are you saying? SPORTS.YAHOO.COM💣 Juve-Salah? Milan eye Ugarte, Lazio-Real coup: today's deals 🤑💣 Juve-Salah? Milan eye Ugarte, Lazio-Real coup: today's deals 🤑Messi’s hat-trick against Algeria stole the spotlight (and who knows, maybe he could have his say in the Ballon d'Or race too), but the transfer market remains one of the most important topics for Serie A.Let’s take a look at today’s biggest transfer news.Juventus, Spalletti would like SalahJuventus need players of real quality, and after failed moves for Alisson and Bernardo Silva, Luciano Spalletti would welcome Mohamed Salah’s arrival in black and white.According to La Stampa, the relationship between coach and player is excellent, but the costs remain prohibitive (which is why Roma reportedly turned down the idea of signing him): in fact, the salary guaranteed to him by the Saudi Pro League is unmatched.Milan, Amorim suggests UgarteAfter Eintracht Frankfurt’s slowdown over sporting director Markus Krösche, Milan have started evaluating several profiles requested by Ruben Amorim: according to La Gazzetta dello Sport one new idea is Manuel Ugarte. The costs for Hjulmand (also suggested by the coach) are very high, while the outlay for Ugarte’s transfer fee would be significantly lower, given that he is on the way out at Manchester United. The midfielder earns €4.1 million net and is under contract until 2029.Inter, De Vrij could say "No" to a renewalAs reported by Sky Sport, Inter have offered Stefan De Vrij a contract extension, but he has reportedly put the proposal on standby: his goal is to get more playing time. The defender - adds Fabrizio Romano - has four offers from abroad: three from Europe that would allow him to be a starter and another from Saudi Arabia. Inter, moreover, are very close to signing Provedel, as confirmed by his agent.Napoli, renewal offered to McTominayCorriere dello Sport writes that talks over McTominay’s renewal are progressing, albeit slowly and with some differences over salary. The shared idea is to continue together and extend the deal until 2030, likely with an option through 2031 added on. There is optimism coming from Napoli, even though a gap between offer and demand remains.Roma, fresh contacts for GreenwoodAs reported by Fabrizio Romano, Roma have had fresh contacts with Greenwood, who knows he is Gasperini’s No. 1 choice. Marseille, however, are asking for €50 million plus €5 million in bonuses because Manchester United hold a very high sell-on percentage. The Giallorossi hope that asking price can come down and, above all, to raise funds through the sale of Soulé. Roma also know that before July, offers could arrive for Koné, who is valued at €45/50 million (according to Pedullà).Lazio, Galassi arriving from Real MadridAccording to Gianluca Di Marzio, Lazio are close to completing the signing of Bruno Galassi, a 2007-born midfielder who made 11 appearances this year for Los Blancos’ Primavera side. The player will arrive on a free transfer, with a 50% sell-on clause, according to the portal LaLazioSiamoNoi.Fiorentina, meeting over Kean staying onAs reported by the specialist outlet FirenzeViola.it, there will be a meeting between Kean’s agent (Alessandro Lucci) and Paratici to lay the groundwork for the striker to remain at Fiorentina.Only a major offer from a club playing in the Champions League could make the club and player waver; for now, no offers have arrived and no interest has come close to the €62 million release clause. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'England must win or I've wasted my time,' says artistA football fan says England must win the World Cup or he would have wasted his time creating the team's Three Lions crest on a beach using stones.Toby Clark, from Lowestoft, Suffolk completed the badge, after weeks of planning and eight and a half hours of work, in time for the opening day of the tournament on Thursday. He then had to spend a further two hours restoring the crest, which measures 6m by 8m, after a "vehicle of some kind" drove over it.England kick-off their tournament at 21:00 against Croatia in Dallas, and the artist joked that his efforts would have been for nothing if the team's soccer stars fail to return home with the 18-carat gold trophy.Clark is a passionate England fan who never gives up an opportunity to celebrate the Three Lions [Luke Deal/BBC]"Whenever I get the opportunity at World Cups or Euros, I always do an England crest," he said."They are going to win, obviously there's no other option – I want us to bring it home, otherwise I've wasted my time."Let's say they do win it, I'll do a portrait of them all down [on the beach]."Clark previously produced a chalk version of the crest for England's semi-final defeat against Croatia at the 2018 World Cup.For his most recent creation, he used a template, a grid and some string and "stamped out the sand by foot"."Everyone seems to love it, even people who are not big football fans can still appreciate the time it took and the effort and the passion," he added."But I'm not going to be doing any more restoration work on it. I've seen the tide come up this high before, so it'll fade and die."John and Rachel Goode, from Ipswich, are looking forward to England's run in this year's World Cup [Luke Deal/BBC]Clark is not the only football fan celebrating the country's soccer stars ahead of their opening game.John Goode, 64, and his daughter Rachel, 28, have decorated their home on Norwich Road, in Ipswich, with 60 metres of bunting and eight large England flags."[The reaction] has been really positive, there's been lots of smiles and we've had people stop and have photographs," said John."I think it is nice to support the team and show your patriotism, and I'd like to see more flags even from other countries — Portugal, Scotland, teams like that."It took the Goodes about three hours to decorate their home in Ipswich ahead of England's opening World Cup match [Luke Deal/BBC]John is not convinced the Three Lions will win the World Cup this time round, but Rachel says following England is about more than them being successful."It's just the fact that it brings the country together for a little while and people put everything aside and think 'Come on England'," she said."We will see how far we can get, but if we get a nice, easy goal early on, I think we'll be OK and we'll dominate [tonight's] game."Do you have a story suggestion for Suffolk? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYoungest U.S. Open golfer lives out his dream at Shinnecock, mingles with Bryson, SpiethSOUTHAMPTON, New York — Some U.S. Open players could list Tiger Woods' win at the 1997 Masters as their first vivid golf memory.Miles Russell's first was also Woods' win at the Masters ... in 2019.Russell, the No. 1 junior golfer in the country, is the youngest of the 156-player field at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island."I'm going to treat it like if it was an AJGA (American Junior Golf Association tournament), where I'm just trying to come here and play good golf and see where my game lines up with some of the best players in the world," he said Wednesday. Those putting together tee times had a little fun: Russell, a 17-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida, is in a group on Thursday and Friday with Padraig Harrington, the 54-year-old U.S. Senior Open champion who is the oldest in the field. How to watch 2026 U.S. Open: Full schedule, TV/streaming info, golfers to watch, coverage guideScottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are among the challengers to J.J. He remembers "bits and pieces" from watching highlights."My first kind of golf memory from watching it was maybe (Jordan) Spieth in 2015 at the Masters," he said. "I think really remembering it was Tiger in 2019."Russell stars on Bryson DeChambeau’s YouTubeRussell is already getting used to the spotlight. He joined Bryson DeChambeau for a video on the two-time U.S. Open champion’s YouTube channel that has nearly three million views since December."I was walking down the range the other day, and (DeChambeau) was hitting balls," Russell said Wednesday. "He stopped what he was doing, came over and said hi and just chatted for a minute. It was pretty cool."Another surreal moment: hitting balls next to Spieth."I looked up to him as a little guy," Russell said. "That's just really cool. I think it's probably even cooler for my parents."Already this year, Russell made his first PGA Tour cut — 50th at the Puerto Rico Open in March. "You watch them play, and you're, like, man, this guy plays pretty boring, and at the end of the round, you're seeing the score, and he shoots like 65. You're like, I did not see you shooting 65 out there, but it's just so kind of ho-hum and a lot of fairways, greens."The 17-year-old said it hasn't hit him that he's already living out what he wants to do for his adult life. He loves golf because of the game's challenge. There are few, if any, greater challenges than a U.S. Open at Shinnecock."It's going to be a good test," he said. "I think not overdoing it in the first few days even though you're here at a major and you're really excited, because this is what you worked for and dreamed for."Ranking the 2026 U.S. Open field: Full list of 156 players at Shinnecock Hills Golf ClubThe 156-player field at Shinnecock is chock full of star power and intriguing storylines. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Detroit got a good one': PWHL stars react to Hilary Knight tradeIt’s inevitable, really, when younger hockey players join the U.S. Women’s National Team. Eventually, those players pull up a picture, and there they are posing and smiling with teammate Hilary Knight back when they were kids and she was the face of a generation of women’s hockey players.Suffice it to say that a whole lot of Michigan kids will have those snapshots too, because PWHL Detroit acquired Knight by trade Tuesday, making the star the face of the first-year franchise in the process.“It’s funny, it’s come full circle,” said defenseman Megan Keller, who grew up in Farmington Hills and earned the PWHL’s Defender of the Year Award on Tuesday. “These are the players that inspired you to chase after your dreams, and now you get the opportunity to be teammates with them. It’s pretty cool.”PWHL Detroit and GM Manon Rheaume acquired Knight from fellow expansion team PWHL Las Vegas in a sign-and-trade by dealing the third overall pick in Wednesday’s PWHL Draft. That leaves the Detroit team without a first-round pick, though it still picks 15th overall in the 12-team league. While the trade was completed Tuesday when a trade freeze lifted, reports of the deal leaked last week.Knight, 36, has been a Team USA regular since cracking the roster as a high school senior in 2007. Then through a four-year career at Wisconsin that included two national championships while playing for the national team, she emerged as a star. Knight has played in five Olympics, winning gold twice — including this past Olympics in Milano Cortina, a team she captained — and silver three times. In Milano Cortina, a goal in the gold medal game made Knight the Olympic recordholder in career goals (15) and points (33). At the World Championships, Knight and Team USA have won 10 gold medals and five silver. Four times she led those tournaments in scoring, and twice she was named the best forward in them.More: Kirsten Simms' hockey journey comes full circle at PWHL DraftAn integral part of Knight’s story, however, is her attention to the sport’s next generation — those photos with young hockey players who will play long after her are just one element of that.Since joining the senior and professional ranks in 2012, Knight has been an outspoken advocate for players’ rights and sustainable growth in women’s hockey, including the establishment of the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association in 2019, which boycotted fractured professional leagues to form one unified PWHL.The PWHL — and its Detroit expansion team — would not exist without Knight and the efforts of her peers.“Her impact off the ice is huge,” Boston Fleet goaltender Aerin Frankel said, clutching trophies as the league’s Goaltender of the Year and Billie Jean King MVP. “I mean, she’s a huge reason why this league is here, and she’s been a trailblazer for women’s hockey forever, for my entire career. I’ve always looked up to her. She’s an incredible goal scorer and such a smart player, but most importantly, a great captain and a great leader.”In Detroit, Knight will play for her second expansion team after a one-year stint with the Seattle Torrent (technically third, if one counts a paper transaction to Las Vegas). Those early reports of Knight's trade caused a bit of a stir.“As these teams went through the process, they’ve had lots of conversations about lots of players and some trades and that sort of thing,” said Jayna Hefford, the PWHL’s executive vice president of hockey operations, on Tuesday. “And so obviously that was something that we heard early on, but nothing was approved by the league until today when the trade lift happened at 9 a.m.”For Knight, the past couple of years may have been turbulent, but a star of her caliber can do a lot to aid the league in breaking into new markets.“I think the beauty of the PWHL is we’re a single-entity league,” said Amy Scheer, the PWHL’s senior vice president of business operations. “And we get to do things that is in the best interest of all 12 teams. We want parity in our league. We want every game to be competitive, every shift to be competitive, and so we don’t have to conduct our business the way every other league does.”Former teammates say that Knight’s leadership will be a big help for PWHL Detroit.“Someone like Hilary is someone that can bring teams together,” Frankel said. “She’s an incredible leader, she’s led on the highest levels and the biggest stages of the Olympics, world championships. She’s just a legend in every category. I think to have someone like that in the locker room that you can look up to and that you can lean on is, I mean, there’s no one like (her), so it’s really a treat for Detroit.”“She’s an incredible player, incredible teammate,” added Keller. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be her teammate for over 10 years now. It feels like an eternity, but a great leader, great ambassador for our sport and in the community. So Detroit got a good one. I know my hometown will like her a lot.”cearegood@detroitnews.com@ConnorEaregoodThis article originally appeared on The Detroit News: PWHL stars wowed by Detroit trade for 'legend' Hilary Knight0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 5 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSudan women’s soccer team defies war and prejudice to make historic return to international stageTheir red jerseys, a stark contrast against the green pitch of Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, marked a historic moment for Sudan. Most were teenage girls, some having fled war, others having never experienced an organized soccer league or set foot in a major stadium. Yet, their presence signified Sudan’s first appearance in international women’s soccer since a devastating civil war erupted in a nation where female participation in sports has long been contentious."My goal is to lift up soccer in my country," 17-year-old team captain Nura Mohamed told The Associated Press, her voice brimming with determination. "It’s a beautiful, unique feeling because, at the end of the day, I just love playing."While the men's World Cup captivated audiences on the other side of the globe, Sudan’s under-17 women’s national team embarked on a challenging journey to Morocco last week. Their mission: qualifying matches for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The inexperienced squad, however, faced formidable opponents, suffering heavy defeats against Comoros, conceding 30 goals across two matches. Tears flowed freely after the final whistle, even as a dozen cheering fans offered their support.Sudan's women shake hands with their opponents (AP)The disparity was stark. Sudan’s team, primarily composed of schoolgirls, faced an older, fitter, and more experienced Comoros side, many of whose players compete in Europe. Unable to assemble a senior women’s squad in time, Sudan’s soccer federation entered the younger team to avoid forfeiting their place in the qualifiers, with the girls having only begun training weeks prior. "The difference between us and the others is huge. We cannot yet compete at the highest level," Burhan Tia, a veteran Sudanese soccer coach overseeing all of Sudan’s women’s national teams, remarked after the first match, a 17–0 loss.Despite the on-field struggles, this team embodies a profound hope for Sudan's future. The nation’s women’s soccer infrastructure collapsed when civil war erupted in 2023. For federation officials, debuting this young squad in Casablanca, after years of conflict, represents a crucial step in preserving women's soccer in Sudan. "Some traveled long distances just to attend training. Many are separated from their families, yet they continue to work hard and pursue their dream," Manal Ali Bushra, a businesswoman who heads the women’s soccer committee, told the AP. She added that the federation is working on infrastructure projects, including a planned sports city and stadium renovations in safer regions, though she declined to discuss the women’s program budget.Coach Tia understood the immense challenge of rebuilding a shattered team. "First, I had to find girls who played soccer. Then, once I found girls who played, I had to make sure they were the right age," he explained. "Then I needed to convince their parents to let them miss classes for training." With the league suspended, his scouting efforts spanned schools across Sudan and extended to neighboring Egypt, where many families had sought refuge from the war. He recruited 10 players from teams and academies in Cairo, with the remainder drawn from Sudanese cities. Tia lamented his inability to recruit from conflict-hit areas like Darfur or Kordofan, known for producing top athletes, due to players lacking identification documents and the war-torn transportation networks. The team warms up in the changing room (AP)On the field, the players’ inexperience was evident. Basic positioning, holding the offside line, and maintaining tactical discipline proved difficult, with players frequently looking to the sidelines for guidance from their coaches. The backdrop to this sporting endeavor is the United Nations-described "world’s worst humanitarian crisis" in Sudan. The 2023 power struggle between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces escalated into a brutal conflict marked by mass killings, rape, and ethnic violence. Over 40,000 people have been killed, and more than 14 million displaced, with famine and disease rampant. This war halted all sports activities, including the women’s soccer league, which had only been officially established after the 2019 revolution that ousted Omar al-Bashir. His three-decade Islamist rule imposed Public Order Laws that rights groups said severely restricted women’s freedoms. Even post-revolution, prominent Sudanese preacher Abdulhay Yousif condemned the women’s football league as an attempt to undermine religion.Liv Tønnessen, a political scientist researching gender politics in Sudan, highlighted the historical context: "The idea of women running, jumping, sweating, and even something as simple as their bodies being visible in motion, was seen by Bashir’s Islamist regime as producing fitna, which in a Sudanese context was understood as sexual or moral chaos." She added: "So when women step onto a soccer pitch, they are directly confronting that entire logic. They are not just present in a male-dominated sports arena, they are moving freely in it, on their own terms."The team has defied war and prejudice (AP)Beyond institutional hurdles, the players also faced a barrage of sexist abuse online. On the national team’s social media accounts, many commenters mocked their heavy defeats, with others posting the phrase "go back to the kitchen" in multiple languages. The team’s existence is also intertwined with complex politics. While Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s military government has permitted international soccer trips for teenage girls, the U.N. has documented sexual and gender-based violence by the Sudanese Armed Forces, which he commands. Tønnessen views this state backing as a calculated effort by the military to project legitimacy, signaling that the state is functioning normally and aligning itself with the spirit of the 2019 revolution. However, Hala Al-Karib, a prominent Sudanese women’s rights activist, dismissed critics who suggest the team is merely a tool for a more progressive image on women’s rights. "The main challenge for me is a reform of the federation," she told the AP, citing a lack of investment in and support for women’s soccer in Sudan.Back on the field in Casablanca, the weight of politics, war, and societal debate momentarily faded, leaving only a group of teenagers chasing a ball, embodying resilience and a fragile hope for a better future.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 5 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMConservatives outraged that a governor appointed a trans rights supporter to an LGBTQ+ boardConservatives are up in arms over the fact that Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) appointed a trans rights supporter to the state’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board. Kellen MacBeth, the founder and president of LGBTQ+ advocacy group Equality Arlington, has “a long history of pushing gender transitions for minors,” according to right-wing outlet The Washington Free Beacon. Related GOP congressman says Talarico is “a barely straight Buttigieg” so he shouldn’t be around kids Equality Arlington advocates for the rights of trans and nonbinary students and has spoken out against the Trump administration’s anti-trans policies. Macbeth also wrote a letter advocating for best practice gender-affirming care for trans youth. This year, Equality Arlington also launched the Arlington Trans Youth Quilt Project, for which trans kids ages 5 through 19 created quilt squares to answer the question, “What does Freedom to Be mean to Me?” The group also advocates for discrimination policies that protect LGBTQ+ people, especially trans people. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The Free Beacon wrote that MacBeth’s appointment proves Spanberger’s “embrace of left-wing gender activism” and claimed it “contradicts the rhetoric Spanberger offered on the issue while campaigning as a ‘moderate’ Democrat.” The publication pointed to the fact that Spanberger said she believes the issue of trans kids in sports should be addressed by schools on a case-by-case basis, rather than relying on the state or federal governments to enact sweeping legislation. Despite the Free Beacon’s view of Spanberger’s moderate campaign, her GOP opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, repeatedly accused Spanberger of being obsessed with trans rights. Earle-Sears ran multiple ads attacking Spanberger for her support of trans rights. One of the ads ended with a slogan reminiscent of the 2024 presidential campaign, saying that Spanberger is “for they/them, not for us.” The ad cited Spanberger’s vote in Congress for the Equality Act – which would ban anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination at the federal level – and falsely said that it would “allow men in girls’ sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms.” School sports are not addressed in the Equality Act. Moreover, no Democrat supports adult men joining girls’ sports teams; they generally want trans girls to have access to the same education, including sports education, as cis girls do. Another ad accused Spanberger of wanting to “let children change genders without telling their parents,” a reference to the fact that many on the left believe that schools should let kids tell their parents they are LGBTQ+ on their own instead of mandating that teachers report their students’ identities to their parents, which can put students in danger. “It really angers me to hear these lies about who I am,” Spanberger responded at the time. “I believe we need to get politics out of our schools and trust parents and local communities.” Throughout the campaign, Spanberger maintained her belief in equality for all Virginians, but did not allow Earle-Sears to force her to focus exclusively on trans rights over other issues important to Virginians. The Free Beacon slammed Spanberger for appointing others to the board who have “a record of left-wing activism.” Virginia’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board consists of 26 members, including 21 nonlegislative citizen members, at least 15 of whom must identify as LGBTQ+. The current board contains several conservatives appointed by the virulently anti-LGBTQ+ former Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R).
