Trump Decries Lack Of U.S.-Made Products Lodged In American Rectums
WASHINGTONAngrily claimings the populace had neglected its patriotic duty to support domestic manufacturing, President Donald Trump issued a statement Tuesday decrying the lack of U.S.-made products lodged in American rectums. Sad how much cheap Made in China GARBAGE is still being stuffed into peoples asses while Great American flashlight and curtain rod makers suffer, Trump wrote in a fiery Truth Social post, adding that real Americans should be absolutely sure any long, cylindrical objects they had obtained for anal penetration were manufactured in the United States before inserting them. Same goes for imported cucumbers and carrots. Every one you get stuck in your rectum is a dollar stolen from proud American farmers! Back in the 1950s we lodged PURE AMERICAN STEEL in our backsides, but now we settle for chintzy Chinese knockoffs with NO FLARED ENDS. Its a national disgrace! And dont try to say you just fell on that permanent marker made in Mexicoyou should have had the handle of a beautiful American-manufactured feather duster crammed up there already! Many top economists criticized the presidents statement, claiming Trumps tariffs on foreign objects would not boost domestic manufacturing and would instead only leave American asses empty. The post Trump Decries Lack Of U.S.-Made Products Lodged In American Rectums appeared first on The Onion.

As Trump battles elite colleges, House GOP looks to hike endowment tax by tenfold or more
A passer-by walks along a path on the campus of Brown University, in Providence, R.I., Monday, Oct. 12, 2020. (AP Photo/Steven Senne)2025-05-06T17:17:16Z WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trumps feud with Americas elite universities is lending momentum to Republicans on Capitol Hill who want to increase a tax on wealthy college endowments by tenfold or more.House Republicans already were considering a hike in the tax on college endowments earnings from 1.4% to 14% as part of Trumps tax bill. As the president raises the stakes in his fight with Harvard, Columbia and other Ivy League schools, lawmakers are floating raising the rate as high as 21% in line with the corporate tax rate. It appears no decisions have been made.In a letter blocking Harvard from new funding on Monday, the Trump administration drew attention to the schools largely tax-free $53 billion endowment, noting its bigger than some nations economies. Trump previously said he wants to see Harvard stripped of its tax-exempt status as he presses for reforms at colleges he accuses of indoctrinating students with radical left ideas. Similar rhetoric has been echoed by Republican lawmakers who question why wealthy colleges get tax breaks that businesses dont.In a letter to Brown University last month, Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas, who has proposed legislation with the higher rate, said lawmakers are concerned about the priorities of universities that operate in a largely tax-free world. He questioned whether their endowments contribute to the public good.Republicans appear to be chipping away at the long-held notion that colleges provide the kind of public benefit that deserves to be protected from heavy taxation. And its happening just as the House looks to cut or offset $1.5 trillion in spending as part of the presidents sweeping tax bill. Endowment taxes were introduced in Trumps first administrationColleges werent taxed on their investment gains until Trumps 2017 tax package, which applied a 1.4% levy to schools that enroll at least 500 students and have $500,000 per full-time student in the bank. A proposal floated by the House Ways and Means Committee in January called for a 14% endowment tax. Now lawmakers are looking at a 21% tax, among various options. As a senator, Vice President J.D. Vance proposed going further, to 35%.In 2023, the current tax generated $380 million from 56 colleges.Raising the tax to 14% would generate $10 billion for the federal government over 10 years, according to budget documents. On its own, it would have little impact on the Houses goals for slashing government spending. The momentum for an increase reflects a broader attack on higher education, said Steven Bloom, an assistant vice president of the American Council on Education, which represents the presidents of hundreds of colleges. Its not a lot of money, so that cant be the motivating factor, Bloom said.Multi-billion dollar endowments draw new scrutinyColleges see their endowments as stability for the future. The wealthiest ones run massive investment portfolios, and they usually draw about 5% of their returns to cover scholarships and other operating costs.Critics say colleges have been allowed to amass huge, tax-free returns while charging students as much as $95,000 a year for tuition and fees. They point to Harvard, Yale and others with tens of billions stored away. In total, roughly 50 colleges have endowments worth more than $1 billion, while the vast majority are much smaller. The tax proposals heighten financial uncertainty for colleges, including some that already are drawing deeper into endowment reserves to make up for federal funding cuts or grappling with budget gaps amid enrollment decreases. At Davidson College, the most modest proposal would add $11 million a year to the schools tax bill, which was about $1 million last year, President Douglas Hicks said in an interview. That amount of money would be astronomical for our budget, he said.Davidson is among a small group of colleges that dont consider students income in admissions and agree to cover their full financial need. Hicks said the proposed tax hikes would take away the equivalent of full scholarships for up to 200 students. If leaders are trying to reform higher education, there are much better incentives, Hicks said. Middlebury College in Vermont, a campus of about 3,000 students, cited the potential tax increase as a factor contributing to recent financial uncertainty. The school faces a budget deficit amid a dip in graduate school enrollment, but its opting not to pull more from its endowment over concerns of a tax hike.Endowment tax increases that are currently under consideration could raise our tax bill from $1 million to $12 million, university leaders wrote in an April update.___The Associated Press education coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. Supreme Court allows Trump ban on transgender members of the military to take effect, for now
The Supreme Court at sunset in Washington, Feb. 13, 2016. (AP Photo/Jon Elswick, File)2025-05-06T18:13:36Z WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed President Donald Trumps administration to enforce a ban on transgender people in the military, while legal challenges proceed. The court acted in the dispute over a policy that presumptively disqualifies transgender people from military service. The courts three liberal justices said they would have kept the policy on hold.Just after beginning his second term in January, Trump moved aggressively to roll back the rights of transgender people. Among the Republican presidents actions was an executive order that claims the sexual identity of transgender service members conflicts with a soldiers commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in ones personal life and is harmful to military readiness. In response, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a policy that gives the military services 30 days to figure out how they will seek out and identify transgender service members to remove them from the force. Three federal judges had ruled against the ban.In the case the justices acted in Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Benjamin Settle in Tacoma, Washington, had ruled for several long-serving transgender military members who say that the ban is insulting and discriminatory and that their firing would cause lasting damage to their careers and reputations. The Trump administration offered no explanation as to why transgender troops, who have been able to serve openly over the past four years with no evidence of problems, should suddenly be banned, Settle wrote. The judge is an appointee of Republican President George W. Bush and is a former captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps. Settle imposed a nationwide hold on the policy and a federal appeals court rejected the administrations emergency plea. The Justice Department then turned to the Supreme Court. The policy also has been blocked by a federal judge in the nations capital, but that ruling has been temporarily halted by a federal appeals court, which heard arguments last month. The three-judge panel, which includes two judges appointed by Trump during his first term, appeared to be in favor of the administrations position. In a more limited ruling, a judge in New Jersey also has barred the Air Force from removing two transgender men, saying they showed their separation would cause lasting damage to their careers and reputations that no monetary settlement could repair.

Associated Press finds no definitive evidence to change credit for famous Vietnam War photo
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Nick Ut, center, flanked by Kim Phuc, left, holds the" Napalm Girl", his Pulitzer Prize winning photo as they wait to meet with Pope Francis during the weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square at The Vatican, May 11, 2022. (AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia, file)2025-05-06T18:34:08Z Months after the release of a film that questions who took an iconic Vietnam War image of a naked girl running from a napalm attack, The Associated Press said Tuesday it had found no definitive evidence to warrant changing a nearly 52-year-old photo credit. The AP released a 96-page report its second examination in less than four months about who actually took the Pulitzer Prize-winning photo credited to Nick Ut that became one of the defining images of the 20th century. A documentary shown at Sundance in January, The Stringer, asserts that it was actually shot by another man, Nguyen Thanh Nghe, but that credit was given to Ut, an AP staff photographer. The AP concluded that it was possible Ut took the photo, but it was unable to be proven conclusively due to the passage of time, absence of key evidence, limitations of technology and the deaths of several key people involved. At the same time, AP found no proof that Nguyen took the photo, the report said.We left nothing uncovered that were aware of and weve done it with a great deal of respect to everybody involved, said Derl McCrudden, an AP vice president who heads global news production. It makes no difference to us if we changed the credit, but it has to be based on facts and evidence. And there is no definitive evidence proving that Nick Ut did not take this picture. The APs latest study involved further interviews, examination of cameras, building a 3D model of the scene and studying photo negatives that survive from June 8, 1972, the date of the photo. Stay up to date with similar stories by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. The report revealed inconsistencies on both sides. The prize-winning photo was apparently taken on a Pentax camera, not a Leica as Ut had long claimed. Nguyen told AP he was not working for NBC that day, as was earlier asserted. Of 10 people on the scene that day that the AP reached, Nguyen is the only one who believes that Ut didnt take the picture, the report said. The report said that believing Nguyens story would require several leaps of faith, including believing that the only time he ever sold a photo to a Western news agency it turned out to be one of the most famous images of the century. An attorney for Ut did not immediately return an email Tuesday. Ut has strongly maintained that the photo is his. ___David Bauder writes about media for the AP. Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty wont run in the Preakness, dashing Triple Crown possibility
Sovereignty, ridden by Junior Alvarado, crosses the finish line to win the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby horse race at Churchill Downs Saturday, May 3, 2025, in Louisville, Ky. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)2025-05-06T17:44:38Z Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty will not run in the Preakness Stakes, officials announced Tuesday, ending any chance at a Triple Crown for a seventh consecutive year.We received a call today from trainer Bill Mott that Sovereignty will not be competing in the Preakness, said Mike Rogers, executive VP of 1/ST Racing, which operates the Preakness. We extend our congratulations to the connections of Sovereignty and respect their decision.Mott told Preakness officials the plan will be to enter Sovereignty in the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel of the Triple Crown, on June 7 at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. Mott on Sunday morning had foreshadowed skipping the Preakness in the name of long-term interests. We want to do whats best for the horse, Mott told reporters at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Of course, you always think about a Triple Crown, and thats not something were not going to think about. This is the fourth time since Justify won all three races in 2018 that the Preakness will go on without a true shot at a Triple Crown. The two-week turnaround from the Kentucky Derby to the Preakness and changes in modern racing have sparked debate around the sport about spacing out the races. Prominent owner Mike Repole earlier Tuesday posted on social media a proposal to move the Belmont to second in the Triple Crown order, four weeks after the Kentucky Derby and sliding the Preakness back further with the aim of keeping more of the top horses involved.___AP horse racing: https://apnews.com/hub/horse-racing STEPHEN WHYNO Whyno has covered the NHL, Washington Capitals, the NFLs Washington Commanders and horse racing for The Associated Press since 2016. twitter facebook RSShttps://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Senator Demands Investigation into Trump Admin Signal Clone After 404 Media Investigation
On Tuesday a Senator demanded the Department of Justice investigate the serious threat to U.S. national security posed by TeleMessage, a company that makes aa Signal clone used by the Trump administration which 404 Media revealed was hacked on Sunday, with the hacker obtaining the content of some users messages and group chats. The news is the latest piece of fallout from the TeleMessage hack and the Trump administrations use of Signal, or insecure modified versions, more broadly. On Monday NBC News reported that another hacker had targeted the same company, and TeleMessage suspended service in response to the breaches.Communications from several federal agencies, including the most senior national security officials, have been recklessly entrusted to TeleMessage, a foreign company that purports to offer agencies a secure tool to archive messages sent using Signal, the popular secure messaging app, Senator Ron Wydens letter reads. The Washington Post first reported the existence of the letter. It would be hard to imagine a less secure way for U.S. government agencies to retain employee messages than decrypting, copying to, and processing those messages on a poorly secured server operated by a foreign company, the letter adds. TeleMessage is an Israeli company that was acquired by Portland, Oregon company Smarsh in 2024.Do you know anything else about TeleMessage? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.TeleMessage makes modified versions of Signal and other communication apps like WhatsApp and Telegram and adds an archiving feature to them which copies messages sent across the service. This can be a useful, or sometimes legally necessary, service for government agencies and regulated industries like financial institutions. Adding that archive capability, however, undermines the security of robustly encrypted messaging apps like Signal and introduces significant risk. As 404 Medias reporting on the hack shows, those threats are far from theoretical and very much real. The hacker provided 404 Media with some TeleMessage users message contents; the names and contact information for government officials; usernames and passwords for other parts of TeleMessages infrastructure; and screenshots that indicated what companies or agencies may also be TeleMessage customers. The hacker said the whole process took about 15-20 minutes. In a New York Times article before 404 Media broke news of the hack, Tom Padgett, the president of Smarshs enterprise business, said we do not de-encrypt, meaning messages werent decrypted while being collected for archiving, the letter says. These claims are plainly false, the letter adds. 404 Medias coverage found that some archived Signal messages were in plaintext, meaning they were not encrypted and were obtained by the hacker.Government agencies using TeleMessage have given their users something that looks and feels like Signal, the most widely trusted secure communications app. But instead, senior government officials have been provided with a shoddy Signal knockoff that poses a number of serious security and counterintelligence threats, the letter says.It remains unclear whether the design of this system was merely the result of incompetence on the part of the foreign company, whose senior leadership are former intelligence officers, or a backdoor designed to facilitate foreign intelligence collection against U.S. government officials. Regardless, TeleMessages dangerously insecure design should have been discovered long before the companys app was installed on the phone of the Presidents national security advisor and, presumably, other senior White House officials, it continues. The TeleMessage episode started when Reuters photographed then-U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz using TeleMessages version of Signal, 404 Media first reported. The letter then directly urges the Department of Justice to investigate, saying TeleMessage appears to have misled the federal government about the security of its products by claiming to provide end-to-end encryption when it does not; and for an investigation into the counterintelligence threat posed by the company, including whether the company has shared U.S. government communications with the Israeli government, and whether the Israeli government played any role in the products dangerous design.Smarsh did not immediately respond to a request for comment.A copy of an Smarsh FAQ sent to customers obtained by 404 Media says it is not possible to register new users. Users that were logged out for their Apps will not be able to login again.

The DEA Once Touted Body Cameras for Their Enhanced Transparency. Now the Agency Is Abandoning Them.
by Mario Ariza ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. The Drug Enforcement Administration has quietly ended its body camera program barely four years after it began, according to an internal email obtained by Propublica. On April 2, DEA headquarters emailed employees announcing that the program had been terminated effective the day before. The DEA has not publicly announced the policy change, but by early April, links to pages about body camera policies on the DEAs website were broken. The email said the agency made the change to be consistent with a Trump executive order rescinding the 2022 requirement that all federal law enforcement agents use body cameras. But at least two other federal law enforcement agencies within the Justice Department the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are still requiring body cameras, according to their spokespeople. The FBI referred questions about its body camera policy to the Justice Department, which declined to comment. The DEA did not respond to questions about its decision to stop using the cameras, saying that the agency does not comment on tools and techniques. Reuters reported on the change as part of a story about budget cuts for law enforcement offices. One former federal prosecutor expressed concern that the change would make life more difficult for DEA agents. The vast majority of times I viewed body camera footage is based on allegations from a defense attorney about what a cop did, said David DeVillers, former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. And I would say 95% of the time it absolves the cop of wrongdoing. The Justice Department started requiring that its federal agents wear the devices in 2021 in the wake of the protests over George Floyds death the previous summer. We welcome the addition of body worn cameras and appreciate the enhanced transparency and assurance they provide to the public and to law enforcement officers working hard to keep our communities safe and healthy, then-DEA Administrator Anne Milgram said in a Sept. 1, 2021, press release announcing the use of the cameras. In May 2022, then-President Joe Biden issued an executive order expanding the use of body cameras to all federal law enforcement officers. In January, the incoming Trump administration rescinded that order, along with almost 100 others it considered harmful. In early February, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, was one of the first agencies to get rid of its body cameras. Subsequent videos show plainclothes immigration agents making arrests with no visible body cameras. The DOJ wrote in a 2022 Office of Inspector General management report that the cameras were a means of enhancing police accountability and the publics trust in law enforcement. Studies have consistently shown that departments that use body cameras experience a drop in complaints against officers, according to the nonprofit Police Executive Research Forum, though its not clear if the drop is due to improvements in officer behavior or to a decrease in frivolous complaints.Eliminating these videos is really taking away a tool that weve seen be of benefit to law enforcement practices, said Cameron McEllhiney, executive director of the National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement. Its also a great teaching tool, besides keeping community members safe from the potential misconduct that could occur. The DOJ put a lot of money into the body camera initiative. In August of 2021, it awarded Axon, the company that dominates the body camera market, a $30.4 million contract for cameras and the software to handle the evidence they created. The contract, according to Axon, remains active. But only about one-sixth of it has been paid out, according to federal contracting data. The most recent publicly available version of the DEAs body camera policy dates to December 2022. It only required agents to wear the devices when they were conducting preplanned arrests or searches and seizures that required a warrant. It also only required DEA officers to wear their body cameras when they were working within the United States. Agents had 72 hours after the end of an operation to upload their video evidence, unless there was a shooting, in which case they were instructed to upload the video evidence as soon as possible. The policy laid out in detail how and by whom evidence from the cameras should be handled in the event officers used force, and it authorized the DEA to use the video evidence when investigating its own officers. The DEA had planned to implement the policy in phases so that eventually its officers nationwide would be wearing the devices when serving warrants or carrying out planned arrests. In its 2025 fiscal year budget request to Congress, the agency asked for $15.8 million and 69 full time employees, including five attorneys, to enable the DEAs phased implementation plan of nationwide use of Body Worn Cameras. Records obtained via Freedom of Information Act request by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington show that the Biden-era DOJ had an ambitious plan to capture agencywide metrics and data about the efficiency and use of body cameras by its law enforcement officers.Laura Iheanachor, senior counsel at CREW, said that before federal law enforcement started wearing body cameras, several local police agencies had declined to participate in federal task forces because doing so would have forced their officers to remove their cameras. Its a protective measure for officers, for the public, Iheanachor said. And it allows state and federal law enforcement to work together in harmony.

(Elizabeth Williams via AP)2025-05-06T16:54:42Z NEW YORK (AP) Jury selection resumed for a second day in the sex trafficking trial of Sean Diddy Combs as a federal judge and lawyers worked Tuesday to find a dozen New Yorkers who believe they can be fair despite any opinions they may have developed about the music mogul.Prosecutors say Combs exploited his fame and fortune to sexually abuse women and destroy young lives while defense attorneys say he engaged in sexual activity with consenting adults. The majority of prospective jurors questioned on Tuesday morning were disqualified after lawyers for Combs and prosecutors cited flaws in their answers to questions designed to see if they can be fair and unbiased.Several who were eliminated from the jury pool had seen or heard media reports related to the case, including some who said they saw a video in which Combs was hitting and kicking one of his accusers in a Los Angeles hotel hallway in 2016. AP AUDIO: Jury selection in the Sean Diddy Combs sex trafficking trial proceeds for a second day AP correspondent Julie Walker reports on day two of jury selection in the Sean Diddy Combs sex trafficking case. But one man who had written on a questionnaire that the video left him with the impression of an angry hostile person who is entitled was not dismissed from the jury pool. After the video aired on CNN last year, Combs apologized, saying, I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. Im disgusted now. Judge Arun Subramanian was seeking to build a pool of 45 prospective jurors from which a panel of 12 jurors and several alternates can be chosen. Nineteen were chosen on Monday and six more by noon Tuesday. Opening statements are scheduled to be presented on Monday for a trial projected to last up to two months.Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to a five-count indictment charging him with leading a racketeering conspiracy from 2004 to 2024 that resulted in various crimes, including kidnapping, arson, bribery and sex trafficking. The Bad Boy Records founder has been held without bail since his arrest at a Manhattan hotel last September.
