WWW.NATURE.COMThe ancestors of eukaryotic cells contained a mix of genes from various microbesNature, Published online: 17 June 2026; doi:10.1038/d41586-026-01739-7Reconstruction of the ancestral gene repertoire of eukaryotic cells reveals traces of a series of close, long-term interactions with diverse microorganisms, and a role of viruses in gene exchange. The findings challenge the view that eukaryotic cells evolved from a simple merger of just two organisms.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

THEONION.COMNation Proud Of Self For Watching, Enjoying Original MovieWASHINGTON—Patting themselves on the back for seeing a film that was neither a sequel nor a prequel, the U.S. populace announced Wednesday that they were proud of themselves for watching and enjoying an original movie. “Learning the names of characters I’d never heard of before wasn’t easy, but ultimately I’m glad I did my part to support the arts,” said 34-year-old Darren Mosley of Davenport, IA, echoing the views of moviegoers across the country who braved unfamiliar faces, storylines, and settings to give a film seemingly devoid of any preexisting IP a fair shot. “Honestly, I can’t believe I made it through two and a half hours without a single mention of Nick Fury or the Force. But for a movie without a “2” or “3” in the title, this was actually pretty good! It’s too bad studios don’t come out with this sort of fresh, original story more often, because I can totally see myself watching one every five years or so.” At press time, the nation was reportedly devastated to learn that the movie it had just watched was an adaptation of a novel by the same name. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPatrick Dorgu identifies ideal position as Man United’s plan for him emergesPatrick Dorgu identifies ideal position as Man United’s plan for him emerges Patrick Dorgu’s close confidants have unveiled his surprise preferred position, even as Manchester United’s plan for him ahead of next season emerges.New dimensionWhen United signed Dorgu last year, the intention was to utilise him in the full-back positions. Under Ruben Amorim, he was chiefly deployed as a left-wing-back in the manager’s preferred 3-4-2-1 setup. He showed promising signs but never really settled. The highlight of this was when Amorim claimed that Dorgu radiates anxiety whenever he gets on the ball. One of Michael Carrick’s first calls upon taking charge of the team was deploying Dorgu in an advanced left-wing role. The tactical decision paid instant dividends. Dorgu found the back of the net in Carrick’s first game, a victory over cross-town rivals Manchester City. The Denmark international then produced a sensational strike against Arsenal, though his upward trajectory was subsequently curtailed by an injury that sidelined him for a number of weeks.Dorgu was back on the score sheet on the final day of the Premier League season as United beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0. He’ll be aiming for a fourth consecutive competitive goal when he starts a game in 2026/27. Another strike would extend his impressive run to four on the bounce. The former Lecce man completed the season with four goals and as many assists. Had he not sustained an injury, there is no telling how many more goal contributions he would have racked up.Dorgu has shown just how effective and dangerous he can be on the left of the attack but according to the Manchester Evening News, those close to him believe a different position suits him more.Preferred roleTyrone Marshall writes, “The intriguing aspect here is that some people close to Dorgu actually believe the right-wing is his best position and where he may eventually be at his best.”“That is a fascinating prospect given his displays on the left for United.”United are thought to be targeting reinforcements on the left side of the pitch, in both defensive and attacking roles. Marshall, however, says that if a left-winger is the priority, Dorgu could end up featuring more at left-back.He will provide competition and cover for Luke Shaw.During his stint with Lecce, Dorgu registered 24 appearances at left-back and a further 14 on the left flank. He also featured on 11 occasions as a right-winger and made three outings at right-back.Featured image Mike Hewitt via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMaple Leafs hire former LA Kings coach Jim Hiller to replace Craig BerubeTORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs hired Jim Hiller as the 41st head coach in franchise history, bringing back an assistant with the club from 2015-19.The 57-year-old Hiller replaces Craig Berube as part of an offseason overhaul led by new general manager John Chayka. Most recently, Hiller served as head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, compiling a 93-58-24 record over parts of three seasons. The Kings fired Hiller on March 1 following an 8-1 loss to Edmonton.Hiller served as an assistant coach with the Kings for two seasons before being promoted to head coach.A native of Port Alberni, British Columbia, Hiller spent 11 seasons coaching junior hockey, including stints with the WHL’s Tri-City Americans and several teams in the British Columbia Hockey League, before moving to the NHL ranks. The Leafs fired Berube on May 13 after two seasons, following a first-to-last turnaround this past season. After finishing atop the Atlantic Division in 2024-25 and making it to the second round of the playoffs, Toronto fell to last in the division and 28th in the NHL.His firing came 10 days after Chayka was brought on board to replace Brad Treliving. Chayka called the Berube firing “an opportunity to start fresh,” and said the team would go through a wide-ranging search.Along with making some new front-office additions, Chayka traded goaltender Joseph Woll and depth defenseman Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers for blue-liner Emil Andrae, goalie Samuel Ersson and a third-round pick in the NHL draft.Toronto owns the No. 1 pick in the draft, a first since taking Auston Matthews atop the 2016 draft.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYankees receive great 85% trade odds on oft-linked Twins $6.7 million catcherYankees receive great 85% trade odds on oft-linked Twins $6.7 million catcher originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Yankees are a team that's eyeing a few different positions at this year's MLB trade deadline. Shortstop is a need with the Anthony Volpe disappointment, and the bullpen is always a need. But the catcher position, with catchers hitting a collective .541 OPS entering Wednesday's games. Austin Wells and the backups haven't been good enough. Adding a catcher in a trade makes too much sense for the Yankees.Fortunately, an update from ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel revealed some encouraging news on their odds to swing a trade for a catcher that's often been linked to the Yankees. That catcher is Minnesota Twins $6.7 million veteran Ryan Jeffers.Yankees get good news on Ryan Jeffers trade with 85% update"Ryan Jeffers, C, Minnesota Twins. Chance of being traded: 85%," Passan and McDaniel write. "The Yankees are the obvious match."With the Yankees being in dire need of catching help, and Jeffers making a ton of sense as a right-handed platoon partner at worst with the lefty Wells, this trade fit might be one of the more obvious ones this summer.Jeffers will be a free agent after the 2026 season comes to a close, so he's only a rental, which should not only help make him more affordable but also make him more likely to be dealt.MORE: Yankees’ Ryan McMahon problem has a $25 million release solution This ESPN duo gives Jeffers an 85% chance of being traded, which is some strong odds that should be welcome news for the Yankees as the clear top fit for Jeffers. While he might be on the injured list right now, assuming he can come back healthy for the second half of the year and the postseason, the Yankees would be getting a catcher who had a .295 average with a .949 OPS in 122 at-bats this season before injury.Jeffers would be a phenomenal trade pickup for the Yankees this season, and with the odds of a deal being 85%, the Yankees' chances to land Jeffers appear to be high.More MLB news:5 reasons to believe in Jordan Walker's breakout for CardinalsEx-MLB GM projects White Sox to sell at trade deadline despite 2026 successTarik Skubal being traded by Tigers would help him in free agencyCubs’ cost to trade for Tarik Skubal from Tigers revealed by ex-MLB GMPhillies extending Cristopher Sanchez to his $107 million deal was genius0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrump sparked fury like no other when he removed Stonewall’s Pride flag. Here’s why it hit so hard.It was an “all hands on deck” situation. That’s how Lambda Legal fellow Nephetari Smith described it. The Trump administration’s abrupt removal of the rainbow flag from the Stonewall National Monument in February – under the guise of adhering to “government-wide guidance” – sparked a frenzy of activity within the civil rights organization as activists, politicians, and nonprofits across the country demanded action. Within a week, an expert team of Lambda Legal attorneys had filed a lawsuit demanding the restoration of the flag. After only two months of litigation, they won. And now, only two months later, Lambda Legal has already released a video series on the journey. Every day at LGBTQ Nation, we write about horrific actions taken by this administration to silence and erase LGBTQ+ people. These acts continue to cause tremendous physical and emotional harm, yet it has been years since we’ve seen the wrath of the LGBTQ+ community burn so brightly as the day that flag came down. The move seemed to cut through Donald Trump’s barrage of rash actions that constantly overwhelm our news feeds, inspiring a collective outrage like none other. Never have I received more emailed statements in a single day, and it felt like a long time since any of us had seen activists and politicians this riled up. Related Vandals tore their Pride flag in two. Activists turned it into a surprising symbol of resilience. What was it about that particular move that struck such a nerve? Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Of course, progressive activists, politicians, and organizations have relentlessly fought back against Trump’s many anti-LGBTQ+ policies, refusing to let his “flood the zone” strategy wear them down. Their grit has led to some critical wins for LGBTQ+ people and has sent a clear message to the administration that no matter how barbaric his and his party’s attempts to erase us become, we’re not going anywhere. But among the battles against gender-affirming care bans, Don’t Say Gay laws, forced outing policies, and bathroom bans, something felt different about the fight to return the Pride flag to Stonewall. It was more emotional, more rage-filled, more mobilizing. Our whole team felt it. “We can’t have our one flag at our one monument on our one flagpole? It was like, enough.”Steven Love Menendez That rainbow emblem, understood around the world as a symbol of belonging, holds an almost incomprehensible level of power for an inanimate object. It’s why activists fight so hard to fly it, and right-wingers fight so hard to ban it from public spaces. Its weight is undeniable. Its presence or absence, addition or removal, can change the entire aura of a place. The flag “serves as a beacon of hope and light for people that are still struggling,” Stonewall flag caretaker Steven Love Menendez, who has devoted the past decade to fighting for a permanent Pride flag installation at Stonewall, told LGBTQ Nation. “It lets them know that there’s a community of people behind them that has their backs.” Symbolically costly After elected officials raised a Pride flag on a temporary flagpole, activists raise the flag on the permanent flagpole at the Stonewall National Monument in New York City Feb. 12, 2026. Thousands gathered at the monument to see the flag raised after President Donald Trump had ordered the flag to be removed in February. | © Seth Harrison/The Journal News / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Smith knew immediately she wanted to be involved in the lawsuit. As a New Yorker, she has long felt a deep connection to the place that launched the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. She remembers how meaningful it felt to visit the Stonewall Inn during her college years, when she was still coming to terms with her queer identity. “I remember having a conversation with this queer person I met who was 65 or 70, and at 21, I’m the only queer person in my family. I just remember being so floored meeting someone who had been queer for so long and was so unashamed and had this comfort with their own identity.” Only a year out of law school, she described how “amazing” it felt to work on something so historic alongside a team that is “deeply connected to what is happening and responding to it so quickly and expertly.” The older, more experienced attorneys involved in the case, she explained, had strong ties to activists in the community, which “facilitated being able to work so quickly and so efficiently.” “In addition to, of course, the law just being very much on our side.” But Trump and his cronies have never been all too concerned about the rule of law. Yet, the administration caved quickly. Perhaps Trump officials could not have anticipated the potency of the fury. Perhaps for once, they actually accepted they had made a mistake. “The irony is quite unbearable. You’re removing a symbol of queer resistance from the site that exists because queer people were persecuted by the state.”Callum Blades Callum Blades, a lecturer in political psychology at Bournemouth University who studies the emotional significance of flags, told LGBTQ Nation that some symbols hold so much cultural weight that nothing can penetrate their power. “There are symbols that become too embedded in the broader cultural sphere to be demonized,” Blades explained. “There’s 50 years of cultural history behind [Stonewall]… and it appears in mainstream films, history books, and is recognized quite globally.” The administration’s decision to settle, Blades posited, “might tell us the limits” of its anti-LGBTQ+ fearmongering strategy. “It was too symbolically costly,” he said. “The Stonewall monument, it does occupy that different cultural position… The imagery of a Pride flag being physically removed from that location is always going to generate media coverage that even people who are sympathetic to Trump might find uncomfortable.” “The irony is quite unbearable,” he continued. “You’re removing a symbol of queer resistance from the site that exists because queer people were persecuted by the state. I think people felt that instinctively… It demonstrated in quite a concrete way that history being commemorated at that monument isn’t considered settled or safe by this administration.” Smith emphasized that the removal of the flag was a clear symbol of the administration’s quest to erase LGBTQ+ people from the American story. “To see that symbolically,” she said, “gives an additional visual cue to what is going on.” Menendez sees it as “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” “Like, we can’t have our one flag at our one monument on our one flagpole?” he told LGBTQ Nation. “It was like, enough.” A halfway win Thousands watch as the Pride flag is raised at the Stonewall National Monument in New York City Feb. 12, 2026. Local officials and activists raised the flag after President Donald Trump had ordered the flag to be removed in February | © Seth Harrison/The Journal News / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images After President Barack Obama designated Stonewall as a national monument in 2016, Menendez contacted the superintendent of national monuments and proposed doing a Pride Month flag installation involving 250 flags around the park. He has spearheaded that project on a volunteer basis ever since. For a long time, he’d also install a temporary flagpole bearing the Pride flag, but permits allowed it to remain only for Pride Month. “This is our landmark. This is the heart and soul of the movement where it all began.”Steven Love Menendez “I immediately saw how much people loved it, would take pictures with it. It was a meaningful symbol for them… So each year when I did the flag installation around the park for Pride Month, I would ask to keep up that flagpole inside, and every year the answer was no. But bearing in mind that those four years were the first Trump administration… Then when the Biden administration was coming in… suddenly the answer was yes.” “The pole has two little side flags where you can put smaller ones,” he explained, “and we would put trans, two-spirit, and just rotate different flags in the community so that everyone felt represented, everyone felt seen, and that’s how the flagpole was functioning during the four years of the Biden administration.” Then Trump returned to the Oval Office. First, his administration removed all references to trans people from the Stonewall Monument’s website. Then, officials banned the Progress and trans Pride flags from flying in the park. And finally, the administration removed the traditional rainbow flag. Lambda Legal’s lawsuit focused narrowly on convincing the courts to return the six-striped rainbow flag, which Menendez says now flies in the park beneath an American flag, as the settlement required. Menendez called it a “halfway” victory. “This is our landmark. This is the heart and soul of the movement where it all began… We should show different iterations of flags, we should make everyone feel represented… I feel like in the lawsuit they should have fought for us to have the freedom to fly whatever flags we want inside.” Flags, Smith explained, “carry enormous emotional weight for people’ and send a message “about who belongs, who is seen, and whose history is considered legitimate.” “Maybe the reason behind the public outcry was that removal was saying the opposite, that this history is contestable.” And with so many variations of Pride flags still banned, Menendez believes that message continues to be sent about the most marginalized members of the LGBTQ+ community. Smith, in fact, believes there’s a reason that the outcry was not quite as loud when, in 2025, the National Park Service banned the Trans and Progress Pride flags from the monument’s Pride Month display (something Menendez has circumvented this year by discovering that the fence around the park is actually city-owned and thus he can attach the flags to it). View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Queer Review (@thequeerreview) “Trans rights have been attacked relentlessly with very little political blowback within the coalition that Trump needs to maintain,” he said. “I think there’s something psychologically interesting there. The attacks on trans people have been quite remarkably effective precisely because trans people remain, for many Americans, abstract. It’s easier to construct a persecutory… that no one’s ever met or seen; you can just believe and project any image you want onto it.” For the love of the flags | Shutterstock The LGBTQ+ community seems to have an infinite number of flags. An infographic shared earlier this month by LGBTQ Nation shows dozens of flags focused only on variations of asexual and aromantic identities. There’s a flag for leather pride, ally pride, nonbinary pride, and polyamory pride. There’s pansexual, bisexual, and lesbian pride (and even a separate flag for butch lesbian pride). The list goes on, and new flags are introduced all the time. Some folks, both in and outside the LGBTQ+ community, think it’s all too much, that it has made queer people a source of mockery, and that one or two flags are enough to encompass everyone. But there’s a reason these flags continue to proliferate in a way they don’t in other communities. “It speaks to something really important about how the community relates to symbols of identity compared to nationalist flag culture,” Blades said. “When you look at the original rainbow flag and trace the evolution, including the trans flag, intersex inclusive flag, progress flags, these various identity flags, each new addition acknowledges there’s something within the broader community that’s not yet fully seen. It’s an ongoing reparative gesture, a refusal to leave anything in the position of being unacknowledged. “There are genuine debates about this in the community on whether that dilutes the symbol’s power or if it reflects real political tensions around race and inclusion that need to be named as well. Those are legitimate conversations, but I think the impulse behind it is to make the symbol more accurate. I think it’s quite beautiful, really, and quite worth defending, trying to ensure that level of inclusivity and always making progress and space for different identities and different people to feel included.” Pride flags, he explained, do “something quite unique compared to a lot of political symbols.” Groups often co-opt existing flags to serve their own agendas, like how the American flag has come to symbolize conservative values. But in this case, flags serve as “rallying points” to bring a community together that might not have found each other any other way. “The LGBTQ+ flags come from the bottom up, the grassroots. They already represent a community rather than trying to force a community onto a flag.” Smith points out that, unlike other marginalized communities, LGBTQ+ people may feel especially isolated because they may find themselves the only queer people in their families. Flags signify there are people out there like them. “Race, that’s something that you can see… Part of how [queer people] build community is how we communicate symbols to each other.” No place like this PROVINCETOWN — 08/22/24 — Steven Love Menendez, of Harlem, New York, rides his bike down Commercial Street with a peace flag. | © Merrily Cassidy/Cape Cod Times / USA TODAY NETWORK Once, while working in the park, Menendez spotted a young trans person trying to take a selfie with the Progress Pride flag in the background. He offered to take a photo for them, and as he did so, the person began to cry. “They said to me, ‘I’m here for a visit, I’m on vacation from Texas, we don’t have a place like this.’” “Some people want to discount the flag and say, ‘Well, what does it mean? It doesn’t really mean anything,” Menendez said, “but it really is important to so many people.” Under an administration so hostile to LGBTQ+ rights, Pride flags, it seems, have come to take on even more meaning. The presence of a flag, and the existence of Stonewall specifically, is a source of comfort to many, a signal of safety, and a reminder to those who are suffering that there is an entire community out there that supports them and is like them. In a way, these visual cues might just make it possible to keep going. How else, after all, will we find each other? How else will we know there are people out there still fighting? How else can we know that people still care? In other words, it seems it’s not that the flag is more important than other battles; it’s that the flag makes it possible to fight them. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Seattle Orcas fared in Major League Cricket 2025Seattle Orcas endured a disappointing Major League Cricket 2025 campaign, finishing fifth in the six-team standings with three wins from 10 matches and a net run-rate of -1.842. After losing their first five matches, the Orcas staged a brief revival with three consecutive victories, but ultimately fell short of a playoff spot. The season began with a series of setbacks, including a crushing 93-run defeat to Texas Super Kings and narrow losses against MI New York and Los Angeles Knight Riders. Just when their campaign appeared over, Seattle bounced back impressively with consecutive wins over MI New York, LAKR and San Francisco Unicorns to keep their hopes alive. However, defeats to Washington Freedom and Texas Super Kings in their final two games sealed their elimination.Seattle's campaign was marked by inconsistency. Their batting produced some memorable performances, particularly through Shimron Hetmyer, but the side struggled to put together sustained momentum and often found themselves on the wrong side of close contests.Season record: 10 matches, 3 wins, 7 lossesLongest losing streak: 5 matchesLongest winning streak: 3 matchesBiggest defeat: Lost by 93 runs vs Texas Super KingsBiggest victory: Won by 5 wickets vs Los Angeles Knight RidersFinal position: 5thMatch-by-matchMatch 4: Lost to Washington Freedom by 5 wicketsSeattle's season began with defeat after they posted 145/9. His highest score of 88 was one of the few bright spots in a difficult season.Shayan Jahangir, 202 runsJahangir provided useful starts at the top, scoring 202 runs at a strike rate of 143.26. His ability to strike regularly gave Seattle an attacking option in the middle overs.Gerald Coetzee, 5 wicketsCoetzee managed five wickets in five appearances and produced best figures of 3 for 34. His pace and aggression added variety to the attack.Jessy Singh, 5 wicketsThe pacer featured in nine matches and collected five wickets, often taking on the difficult role of bowling at the death.Sikandar Raza, 5 wicketsRaza contributed with both bat and ball, claiming five wickets in seven innings and offering useful all-round balance to the side.Season verdictSeattle Orcas' 2025 campaign was a tale of missed opportunities. Their five-match losing streak at the start of the tournament left them with too much ground to make up, even though they responded with three successive wins in the second half of the league stage.Shimron Hetmyer's explosive batting and Harmeet Singh's consistency with the ball provided positives, but the lack of sustained performances and repeated batting collapses proved costly. The Orcas showed enough fight to suggest they can be competitive, but they will need greater consistency and stronger starts if they are to return to the playoffs in future seasons.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup 2026: Vozinha to reunite with mother at next Cape Verde game after congressman steps in to solve visa issuesIn a World Cupalready littered with tremendous moments, none was more unexpected than the performance of Cape Verde goalie Vozinha. The 40-year-old endured an onslaught of pressure from Spain, but never broke, helping his team secure a shocking 0-0 draw against one of the biggest favorites in the event. Vozinha received many accolades following the star-making appearance. He was named the Man of the Match after notching seven saves against Spain, and saw his social media following completely explode after a national audience saw his performance and tenacity. World Cup 2026: Daily schedule | Group schedule, results | StandingsBut one very important person was unable to watch Vozinha in person. Due to visa issues, Vozinha's mother was not allowed into the United States in time to watch Cape Verde's first game in the 2026 World Cup. The goalie revealed as much following the draw, saying he was emotional after the contest because his mother was unable to be at the game. But that issue was resolved ahead of Cape Verde's next game. In a statement Wednesday, Brooklyn Congressman Hakeem Jeffries said he was moved by Vozinha's story, and worked with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to ensure Vozinha's mother had her visa issues resolved and all fees waived. Because of that, Vozinha and his mother are expected to reunite when Cape Verde takes on Uruguay on Sunday. Vozinha, whose actual name is Josimar Dias, will have a lot to live up to in the contest. Following the team's draw against Spain, expectations will be high when Cape Verde takes the pitch again. No matter how well Vozinha plays moving forward, it will be tough to top the Spain game. In addition to the contest being Vozinha's first-ever game in the World Cup, it was also Cape Verde's World Cup debut. Prior to 2026, the team had never participated in the event. Thanks to Vozinha, the team pulled off a shocking result. While that moment is unlikely to be topped, Vozinha might enjoy the game against Uruguay even more knowing his mother will be at the stadium watching her son play.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJared Verse final message to former Rams teammates: "Beat the Seahawks!"In today's NFL with a robust free agency period and teams more willing to make splash trades than ever before, it sometimes feels as if there isn't as much hate in this league. Oh yes, fans still are flowing with haterade, but I'm talking about the hate shared between rival players. This is not the case in the NFC West... specifically between the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. For those teams, the sensation of hate is alive and well. Apparently, the hate runs so deep it matters even when a player leaves. Such is the case for now-former Rams defensive end Jared Verse. Earlier this offseason, Verse was traded away from the Super Bowl-contending Rams to the Cleveland Browns (who are very much not a Super Bowl-contenting team) in a deal to acquire Myles Garrett. Verse surely has plenty to say, which he did with Browns broadcaster Nathan Zegura. You can watch the whole interview here if you are curious, but I will highlight one specific thing Verse said. Verse addressed the team himself before the news broke to the rest of the country, and he left them with one final message:“And I told them the most important thing, ‘Make sure’ – and I'm not going to cuss – ‘Make sure you beat the Seahawks. That’s all I care about.'"Jared Verse has only played in five career games against the Seahawks, but those five were more than enough to build a lifelong hatred of Seattle. Earlier this offseason, Verse made his feelings about the Seahawks known loud and clear."I genuinely don't like them. Like, l got a disdain in my heart for them. Like, I hate them. I don't like the Seahawks at all. There's nothing I like about them. I don't like their players. There's nobody I like about their staff. I don't like them.”Makes sense why Verse doesn't like Seattle. After all, the Seahawks made fools of Verse and the Rams defense twice last season, including the NFC Championship game where Verse himself mentioned they were thrown off their gameplan because they did not expect Sam Darnold to play so well early on in the game. Not sure I would admit such a thing if I were him, but I know I'd be salty about it if it happened to me. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVaibhav Sooryavanshi being targeted because others are jealous of his rise; 'they will poke him more'NEW DELHI: Former India batter Manoj Tiwary believes teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi needs to learn how to handle provocation on the field after his recent altercation with Sri Lanka A players during the ongoing tri-series in Dambulla. The incident took place after India A lost a Super Over thriller to Sri Lanka A on Monday. Television footage showed the 15-year-old pushing Sri Lankan spinner Vishen Halambage before senior player Niroshan Dickwella intervened. Reports suggested Halambage had been sledging Sooryavanshi throughout the series. While the Sri Lankan player was sanctioned, the Indian youngster escaped punishment.Tiwary said the attention surrounding Sooryavanshi's rapid rise means rival teams will try to unsettle him."Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has to understand a little. There will always be verbal battles against us on the pitch, because there are many countries that are jealous of us. So, they will provoke you. The way Vaibhav Suryavanshi's IPL campaign went, and the way he is moving forward and getting everything, so they will poke him more. The way a 15-year-old is progressing, they are jealous of it. So, we have to prepare him for it," the former batter said on Cricbuzz.Different paths to successTiwary said Sooryavanshi now faces an important decision regarding the image he wants to create in world cricket."It is upto him what kind of image he wants to create in the cricketing world. One path is like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, who are generally calm people, they answer through performances. The other route is like Virat Kohli, people who are aggressive. Now he needs to decide how people want to perceive him. Anger is important, but it is important to point it in the right direction," he continued.Tiwary also felt the controversy may have affected the youngster's batting after he managed only 38 runs against Afghanistan A."No one will take action against him for this, but he must realise what he has done. No one wants to see an emerging player be involved in pushing and shoving. The more he plays, the more he will understand about the conduct in the field. But under any circumstances, he should not go outside the laws of the game. People are watching him, and his behaviour will be noted. He scored only 30-40 runs today, so it is affecting him, as he did not score as much he should have," Tiwary concluded. Bahutule backs youngster to learnIndia spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule, who has worked closely with Sooryavanshi at age-group level and with Rajasthan Royals, described the incident as unfortunate and backed the youngster to move on from it."It was an unfortunate incident, but we don't know how he was provoked because I know him, and Vaibhav is a very composed kid, but I'm sure there are experienced coaches there who will guide him," Bahutule said in the press conference ahead of the second ODI between India and Afghanistan."Sri Lankan players should also be educated on how to behave," Bahutule added. The former Mumbai skipper expressed confidence that the teenager would mature with experience."He will learn, he is a young kid with a lot of responsibility of representing India. I'm sure he will not repeat it and such incidents can be avoided," Bahutule said.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEXCLUSIVE | Chris Waddle: ‘If Marseille want to challenge PSG, then they have to get their house in order’EXCLUSIVE | Chris Waddle: ‘If Marseille want to challenge PSG, then they have to get their house in order’Retired England international and Olympique de Marseille winger Chris Waddle sat down with Get French Football News to discuss his former club and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It’s another rebuild for Marseille. Can you explain why the club lacks stability? It always has. I was lucky to catch them in a good patch under Bernard Tapie. We won the league three years [in a row] and reached the Champions League semi-finals and final. Obviously, we didn’t win it, but we got to a semi and a final. They won the Champions League in 1993 and then got relegated. Then they came back up and hovered around the league; they went good again, and then they went bad again. It’s Marseille. It’s as simple as that. You don’t know what you’re going to get, season to season. There’s a big turnaround of players: players coming in, players going out. A very disrupted dressing room. Some players were let go because they were fighting and arguing. It’s a very passionate football club, on the field and off the field. There are going to be a lot of stories coming in and out of Marseille, but if they want to challenge Paris, then they have to get their house in order. They need to get stable players and players that are on board, and not chopping and changing every transfer window. That’s the key: you can’t have the turnaround that Marseille’s had over the last two to three years. You can see why managers have left – sacked some of them, obviously – they’ve thought, ‘I want to get out of here.’ You don’t know what’s happening; a player could be gone next week, a new player could be arriving, and you’re thinking, ‘What’s going on?’ When I was there, there was a lot of turnaround. But Bernard Tapie had a picture [in his head] and knew what he wanted to do. And yes, we did change managers, but he had an idea of why and where we were going. But at this minute in time, the club just seems to buy four or five players, and then in January, another five come in. And you can’t get a settled team when you keep chopping and changing players and coaches; you need to have a picture of where you’re going, and it might take two or three years, but you can’t expect to buy success by buying five players and then getting rid of five players. It ain’t gonna happen. What did you make of Roberto De Zerbi joining Tottenham?I was pleased. I like him. I think he did a good job at Marseille. I think it was a hard job. I think he’ll admit that it’s very demanding. Marseille expect to win everything, and I think eventually it took its toll on him. He must have thought, ‘I’m sick of the turnaround here. I want a settled team. I’ve had enough.’ [And] to get the Tottenham job, he must have been delighted. Like Marseille, it’s a big club. A lot of turnaround, but I’m sure he can stabilise it. I think Tottenham are a bit more laid-back than Marseille. So I think he’ll get time to build a team and not have it dismantled. I thought he did well at Marseille. It wasn’t an easy job chasing Paris. To do the Marseille job, you’ve got to have thick skin, as they want to have success yesterday. Who are your favourites to win the World Cup?I think Spain or France will win it. I think Spain will be able to handle the conditions better than most European teams. Spain is a very hot country. They play a game of possession, and they can go through the gears when they need to. They’re technically gifted. I just think it’ll suit them, the conditions and everything. Listen, I’m not saying they’re out-and-out [favourites]; they’ve won it; let’s go home. They can have bad games like everybody else. I think France again, a lot of the players play at a good level of football. They’ve got some really top players, and they’ll be disappointed if they don’t win it. It’s not about saying ‘Can we get to the semis? Can we get to whatever?’ Teams like Spain or France will be looking at the tournament and looking at the teams in it and saying to each other, ‘If we don’t get to the final at least, we’ve been disappointing.’ When you see Didier Deschamps making space for a creative maverick like Rayan Cherki in his squad, do you think England remains too reserved a national side? We’ve had five number 10s in the squad at one stage. We’ve had Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Jude Bellingham, and Morgan Rogers. We’ve had a lot of number 10s who’ve had opportunities, and some didn’t make the plane, like Phil Foden. Palmer and Foden. Eze’s going to be a player to come on, I think. Bellingham to start. I’d say on form this season, Rogers should start. So we’ve got quite a few number 10s now. I think the problem facing England will be. Can we defend well? I’m not too convinced of the back four. I think going forward, we’re alright. We can cause problems, but I think the big thing for England will be the conditions. I think the key will be with the subs. Will they be able to come on and reach the level or make the level even higher? So [Thomas Tuchel] could be calling on players to give a good half an hour to change the game. A lot of people will say, ‘Can it be that hot?’ It is. This is going to have a massive say on the tournament, and you’re going to be looking at teams that can handle the heat. I look at the squads, and I look at the conditions, and I just think that Spain and France should be able to handle that very well. I’d be very surprised if one of them don’t win it. What did you make of Thomas Tuchel’s selection? There were a couple of players I was a bit surprised by. Djed Spence was a surprise choice. Reece James is a talented right-back who can play in midfield, but he’s been injured a hell of a lot throughout his career. Defensively, Dan Burn, what is he, 34 now? Jordan Henderson, a very good pro. These must be [picked because they’re] very good for the changing room, character-wise. I think we could all write down twenty number 10s, but you’re not going to pick twenty number 10s. He’s analysed the squad; he’s looked to see who the leaders are and what players are popular in the changing room. I think players like Henderson and Burn might not even get a game, but they must be good in the dressing room. They’re experienced, and he saw something in them. I like Thomas Tuchel. I think he’s picked a squad to win matches rather than pick who the media want. He’s not been afraid to leave big-name players out. I’ve been impressed with that. Just a couple of questions for me. Why’s Lewis Hall not there, who’s had a great season at left back? Or even Tyrick Mitchell at Crystal Palace, who won the UEFA Europa Conference League – a natural left wing-back. So there are a couple of questions, but I’m sure every country has people like me who question their squads. If Thomas Tuchel wins it, we’ll all say he got it right. If we get to the semi-final or even the quarter-final, I think he’ll have done well. If we get knocked out in the group stages – which I don’t see happening – then there will be some serious questions for him. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLSU Tigers secure massive addition with elite edge rusher Chris WhiteheadLSU‘s recruiting hot streak hit a daily double on Wednesday as the Tigers continue to rack up big-time commitments.Four-star running back Trey Martin got things started with his announcement for the Bayou Bengals, followed by four-star edge rusher Chris Whitehead telling Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett he has also committed to the Tigers. A top-50 prospect nationally, Whitehead was coveted from coast-to-coast with offers from Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina and dozens of other programs. He was set to officially visit the Buckeyes this weekend, but instead put his name on the commitment list for Lane Kiffin and Co.Whitehead visited Baton Rouge back in April, then returned Tuesday for another unofficial visit with his family. “What stands out the most is what Lane Kiffin is building down there,” Whitehead’s father told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong prior to the trip. “I think he’s building a powerhouse.”The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder is the No. 48 overall prospect and No. 6 EDGE in the class, according to Rivals, and he is the second top-10 player at the position to commit to LSU in the past 10 days. Four-star K.J. Green (No. 55 overall) committed to the Tigers on June 7, just a few days after five-star Jaiden Bryant flipped his pledge from LSU to Miami. Whitehead’s commitment continues a run of commitments that started with Green and now includes nine new pledges in the past 10 days. LSU’s class, which hovered around the fringe of the top-25 after Bryant’s decommitment, now sits at No. 9 nationally with the fewest commitments of any school in the top 10. Scouting Chris WhiteheadRivals National Scout Cody Bellaire writes this about Whitehead as a prospect:“Knifing edge defender whose athleticism jumps off the screen as a pass rusher and space player. Tremendous burst and the ability to get skinny between blockers to make plays in the backfield consistently. Verified 6-foot-4, 230-pound edge defender with 34-inch arms that lives behind the line of scrimmage. Effective pass rusher that wins with burst and active hands. Has the ability to get upfield and bend the corner effectively. Closes space quickly when working in the open field and is comfortable playing to the flat. Need to see more from him at the point of attack to set the edge consistently, but has the frame to add mass and get stronger. Has the ability to be an effective pass rusher early on in his career at the next level, but will need to continue developing his body in order to reach his ceiling as a complete edge defender.”This developing story will be updated.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat 162-0 means in MLB and why fans keep trying itPhoto by Tom Wilson/MLB Photos via Getty ImagesBaseball fans may have seen the 162-0 challenge mentioned online, with perfect-season attempts, fantasy roster builds and MLB The Show-style simulations all built around the same impossible target. The concept is straightforward. Pick a team, play through an entire season and try to win every game.In MLB terms, that means finishing a 162-game MLB regular season with 162 wins and zero losses. It is not a realistic target in actual baseball. It works because the rule is simple, the challenge is repeatable and the standard is almost impossible to reach. What does 162-0 mean in MLB?162-0 in MLB means a team wins every single game of the regular season. It does not include the playoffs, the World Series or any exhibition games. The focus is only the regular-season schedule. The number comes from the modern MLB calendar. MLB moved beyond the old 154-game schedule in the early 1960s, with the American League adopting 162 games in 1961 and the National League following in 1962.No MLB team has ever come close to a perfect 162-game season. The MLB single-season wins record is 116, shared by the 1906 Chicago Cubs and the 2001 Seattle Mariners. The Cubs finished 116-36 in a 154-game season. The 2001 Seattle Mariners finished 116-46 in a 162-game season. That gap explains why 162-0 belongs more naturally as a challenge than a real prediction. Even the best regular-season team of the 162-game era still lost 46 times. The maths makes the idea even clearer. With a 99 percent per-game win chance, a team would still have only about a 19.8 percent chance of going 162-0.That is because the team would need to hit that 99 percent chance 162 times in a row. Real MLB teams are nowhere near that level of certainty.Baseball’s unpredictability is the point. One bad start, one cold lineup, one tired bullpen or one mistake in the field can ruin the run.How do you play the 162-0 challenge and what is the best strategy? The easiest way to attempt a 162-0 challenge is through an MLB The Show-style Franchise Mode-style challenge.Start a franchise, choose a team and play or simulate the full regular season. The aim is to finish without a single defeat. Some players use standard rosters and realistic settings. Others lower the difficulty, edit rosters or build a super team before starting. The strict version is simple. Lose one game and the run is over.A more casual version allows restarts, easier settings, roster editing or full manual control. That makes the challenge more accessible, especially for players who want a quick repeatable run.The biggest mistake is focusing only on power hitters. A 162-game challenge needs depth everywhere.Starting pitching matters first. One elite ace is not enough when a team needs five starters to survive a full season. The bullpen matters just as much. A weak relief group can turn a winning game into a failed attempt in one inning.Defence should not be ignored either. Poor fielding gives away extra outs, and extra outs are exactly how perfect-season runs collapse. The best roster balances power, contact hitting, speed, strong defence, bench depth, multiple reliable starters and a bullpen that can protect close leads. That is much easier in a video game than in real MLB. Actual teams deal with injuries, travel, slumps, rotation gaps, bullpen fatigue and random one-run losses. That is why 162-0 works as a game challenge. It is not about realism, it is about chasing baseball’s most impossible regular-season target one attempt at a time.Read more:LA Dodgers star Mookie Betts plays viral 162-0 MLB game with Ryan O’HearnDansby Swanson’s struggles at the plate laid bare by alarming batting average statNew 76ers executive accused of bringing ‘bad juju’ to Philadelphia after untimely baseball incident0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAgent: Texas Tech nudged Brendan Sorsby to apply for supplemental draftSo why did quarterback Brendan Sorsby decide to enter the supplemental draft? As his agent tells it, Sorsby believed Texas Tech wanted to move on from a difficult situation.Appearing Wednesday on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, agent Ron Slavin explained Sorsby's decision to waive his remaining college football eligibility by withdrawing his lawsuit and heading to the NFL."It just came down to too much pressure from everybody else on Tech, and Brendan still wanted to play at Tech," Slavin said. "This wasn't Brendan Sorsby not wanting to play college football. This was Brendan Sorsby just being advised by the school that, 'I think it's time for you' — you know, we had seven days left to file for the supplemental draft and didn't know where this thing was gonna go. So, we won in court. We did our job on our side, but, for whatever reason, the world melted down like college football was ruined forever."Although Slavin eventually pegged the decision as a 50-50 split between Sorsby and Texas Tech "just to make everybody happy," it's clear from the overall interview that Slavin (and, by extension, Sorsby) believes Tech got skittish."When we made the decision to hire Jeffrey Kessler, you know, he's the Harlem Globetrotters," Slavin said. "You know, he doesn't lose. And the NCAA, unfortunately, is the Washington Generals. So, you know, that's kind of how we stood on it. And we still haven't — we didn't lose. That's the thing."Still, Texas Tech wasn't comfortable in continuing the fight, especially after it went from Sorsby vs. the NCAA to the Big 12 vs. Texas Tech."Texas Tech didn't want to go through the process and jeopardize a situation where the Big 12 makes up rules as they go, and says, 'He can't play in the Big 12 championship game,' or the CFP comes out and says he can't play the CFP," Slavin said. "Then he played a season for nothing. And with seven days before the supplemental draft, you know, Tech thought it was in Brendan's best interests to move forward with that instead of — I mean, the other thing is you have a roster of 90 kids. So those 90 kids are — they're affected too. So that was where Brendan was, like, 'I don't want to screw these guys over, either, with, you know, get through the season, we go 12-0, and then they pull the rug out from us.'"It really was the most prudent decision. Despite Sorsby's win in court, the Big 12 had filed suit against Texas Tech and the NCAA had requested an appeal with the goal of having a decision in place before the start of the 2026 college football season. If Sorsby hadn't applied for the supplemental draft, he would have risked encountering all sorts of judicial mayhem if he'd stayed at Texas Tech.Ultimately, he would have risked being not only a man without a team in 2026, but a man without a league.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe NHL’s ‘Heated Rivalry’ Offseason Dilemma: How to Capitalize on Hockey’s Pop Culture MomentHockey, well, hockey romance, is booming. Canadian streamer Crave’s breakout hit Heated Rivalry — one of the most talked about shows of the last year — became a pop culture phenomena. The queer hockey romance drama not only took social media by storm in late 2025, it made certified stars out of its at-the-time unknown leading actors, Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie and the source material, a string of novels by Rachel Reid, bestsellers years after release. The Jacob Tierney-created show became appointment television, a rarity in the streaming age.More from The Hollywood Reporter'Empathie' Wins Grand Jury Prize, 'The Pitt' Named Best Drama at Banff World Media FestivalStanley Cup Final Scores Largest TV Audience Since 2019These Sports Shows Aren't Playing the Game You Think They Are Romance readers were likely not surprised — this thought-to-be niche sub-genre is actually a booming sector of the genre. Many months after it broke out, Heated Rivalry is adding to the bottom line of its parent company, as News Corp CEO Robert Thomson told analysts on May 7, “We continue to see feverish interest in Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry in print and digital, and even in countries in which ice hockey is not a mainstream sport.” Meanwhile, Off Campus, the latest hockey-centric show to hit streaming, has also become a hit for Prime Video in the month since its release. The show, based on Elle Kennedy’s book series, had been in development for years, and much like Reid’s novels, had a loyal fanbase pre-show. It quickly became the streamer’s third biggest debut ever. The rise of hockey romance has given the sport something that the likes football and basketball have long had — a real pop culture moment. That’s not to say hockey’s never been in pop culture — The Mighty Ducks, of course, cannot be ignored. But Heated Rivalry’s release came at the perfect moment for the sport of hockey, and Off Campus went on to cement its place. Now the question is how the National Hockey League, and the Professional Women’s Hockey League, plan to capitalize on the moment. NHL execs, however, should take note that Heated Rivalry will be much less kind to its fictional league in season two. But more on that later. Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander (left) and Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov in episode five of ‘Heated Rivalry.’Sabrina Lantos/HBO Max Social media, particularly TikTok, had already started homing in on professional hockey players in both the NHL and the PWHL when Heated Rivalry premiered. There was, and are even more so now, a slew of fandom style TikTok edits the NHL’s young talents — San Jose Sharks players Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith each boast considerable fanbases of young women on social media — making the words “boy aquarium” nearly unavoidable on the app. The Olympics were on the horizon and would be fruitful for the U.S. men’s and women’s hockey teams, as they both took home gold. “Sometimes the stars just need to align,” NHL chief communications officer and senior EVP Jon Weinstein tells The Hollywood Reporter on a recent Zoom. “Right now, the stars are aligned.” The executive speaks from Raleigh, North Carolina, in town for the 2026 Stanley Cups Finals between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights. The Hurricanes would go on to win the series 4-2 in game six this past Sunday. For those working in hockey, there’s never been a doubt that it would breakthrough; it was always about finding the right vehicle. “We know hockey has the ability to transcend its traditional audience and attract people. It just takes storytelling and personalities and the connection to culture in order to do that,” a representative for the PWHL tells THR.Grace Zumwinkle and Taylor Heise, members of the PWHL’s Minnesota Frost, celebrate following the Women’s Gold Medal match.Bruce Bennett/Getty Images “These shows are really helping make the sport feel more familiar and accessible and giving people permission to engage with hockey even if they don’t know every rule or have decades of history with the game,” add the rep. For some fans, the PWHL felt like an easier entry point new to the sport. Unlike the NHL, the women’s professional league is only three seasons old and still expanding. The league has added teams in Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose ahead of the upcoming 2026-2027 season. New fans can get up to speed on all things PWHL through a YouTube series dubbed “PWHL 101” to get new fans up to speed. The PHWL has seen immense growth recently, but it’s hard to pin that down to a television show given its nascent phase. Women’s sports viewing has been on the rise, and the 2026 Olympics women’s hockey gold medal game between the U.S. and Canada set a viewership record to become the most-watched women’s hockey game ever, according to Nielsen. It averaged 5.3 million viewers across USA Network and Peacock, peaking at 7.7 million viewers during the game’s final minutes. The NHL has several things it points to for its own recent growth — the 2026 Olympics and its Four Nations Face-Off. The league touts record attendance and ratings in the U.S. Game six of the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals, where the Hurricanes claimed victory, drew 5.9 million viewers. It was the most viewers for any game six since 2019. TNT Sports noted that its viewing among women, who make up a large part of both Heated Rivalry’s and Off Campus’ fanbases, grew 63 percent year to year for its NHL playoff games. The league seems confident that new fans are coming from these avenues. “Heated Rivalry brought a new fan base to hockey,” NHL president of content and events Steve Mayer says.Jaccob Slavin of the Carolina Hurricanes holds the Stanley Cup.Bruce Bennett/Getty Images The NHL says they’re aiming to get people to the rink because once they’re there, the league feels confident they’ll “hook them” and create new loyal fans. “You never know what it will take to get somebody to actually come and watch, and Heated Rivalry, no question, got a lot of people talking. [It] got a lot of people curious about hockey,” Mayer continues. “We truly believe that once they saw how great the game was that they stayed.” There’s no misunderstanding at either of the leagues, however. Heated Rivalry started this wave on television due largely to the show, not just the sport. “So much has to do with the quality of the show, and Heated Rivalry is an amazing show. It’s so well done,” says Mayer. Heated Rivalry’s popularity started to bleed into other facets of hockey culture early into its run. Hockey podcasters, of which there are plenty, began taking notice, but none before What Chaos! hosts Pete Blackburn and DJ Bean, along with their producer Shawn DePaz, took an early interest.DePaz (left, producer) and Bean (top right, host) and Blackburn (right, host) from the What Chaos! podcast.Courtesy of What Chaos! Podcast “I think I just caught it on my algorithm,” Bean says. This was before the Canadian series even had its international distribution in HBO, and it was set just to air on Bell Media’s streamer Crave. They started a mantra on their show — just get them to November 28, Heated Rivalry’s premiere date. It’s to be noted that Tierney himself has appeared on the podcast more than once, which should be a good indication of how they’re approaching the show. Naturally, this engagement brought new fans to the Bostonians’ show. “Forget whatever it’s done for our audience. We love that it’s improved the hockey scene,” says Bean. “It so quickly escaped containment and became something that everyone was watching and everyone was talking about. It had an extreme gravitational pull,” Blackburn adds. “The show itself was one of the best shows that we’ve seen, and it felt like it just fully had a choke hold on the entire world for a month and a half.”Heated Rivalry’s popularity brought the world of hockey romance front and center. Much like Tierney, who learned about Reid’s books through a Washington Post article on niche subgenre, the NHL first came to know about its popularity through books. In the world of romance novels, hockey romance is a booming business, propelled mainly by BookTok, a section of TikTok dedicated to book influencing. These hockey romance books get adapted for the screen, as Heated Rivalry and Off Campus did, and that leads many productions to engage with the professional leagues during the development process. The NHL knew about Off Campus, which uses its team names the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers throughout the series. Heated Rivalry, however, opted to go another path.Logan (Antonio Cipriano), Garrett (Belmont Cameli), Dean (Stephen Thomas Kalyn), and Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks) in ‘Off Campus.’Liane Hentscher/Prime Mayer says the team is now “really close” with Tierney, but noted that he and his producing partner Brendan Brady didn’t approach the league before the show aired. “They wanted to make an authentic story to the book. Yes, there’s NHL in the book, but they wanted to do their own thing. We respect that. We truly do,” the executive says. In Heated Rivalry, the television show, the men’s professional league was rebranded the MLH. The executive says they know of another project coming from Netflix, seemingly pointing to the recently announced adaptation of Hannah Grace’s viral novel Icebreaker. “Everybody’s trying to get into the hockey space,” says Mayer. “There’s going to be many more. I’m telling you, we’re getting pitched left and right.” The NHL knows that they’re witnessing a phenomenon unfold in front of their eyes, and they’re welcoming it. “Heated Rivalry started the wave, and the waves just keep going. Off Campus is incredible as well,” says Mayer. He believes this shows that the momentum is there. But as new fans pour in, the spotlight moves away from how to get fans in and the reality of keeping those fans, particularly queer fans. In 2023, the NHL banned the use of pride tape, along with pride jerseys and other speciality jerseys worn during games and warmup. The league later reversed the pride tape decision. Weinstein pushes back when asked about how the league plans to keep these fans that are coming from a queer series given the league’s history, asserting the “perception and reality don’t match” on the topic. Fans of Reid’s books know that season two could pose a tricky position for the NHL, who is ready to go “all in” on the new season. In The Long Game, Shane Hollander (Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Storrie) have finally leapt from situationship to relationship, and the book’s main tension shifts to the emotional tole of hiding a serious relationship and the fictional league’s poor response to their relationship once they are out. Storrie (left) as Russian hockey player Ilya Rozanov and Williams (right) as Canadian hockey player Shane Hollander in ‘Heated Rivalry.’HBO Max/Bell Media Reid, for all intents and purposes, casts the fictional league’s commissioner as the rightful big bad villain of Shane and Ilya’s story. The NHL is aware of what’s to come, and Weinstein remains unconcerned for the real NHL and its commissioner. “The book is about a fictional character,” he says. “We want every person to feel like they belong in hockey.” Mayer does have a thought about that storyline. “There is one burning question that we all had,” he says. “Who will play the commissioner?”Best of The Hollywood Reporter24 of the Most Shocking Character Deaths in Television HistoryThe Cast of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' Then and Now'Yellowstone' and the Sprawling Dutton Family Tree, ExplainedSign up for THR's Newsletter. APNEWS.COMDangerous flooding from Tropical Storm Arthur, first of the Atlantic season, threatens Gulf CoastA convention attendee walk through the rain outside the George R. Brown Convention Center, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in Houston. (AP Photo/Kevin M. Cox)2026-06-17T15:02:32Z MIAMI (AP) — A disorganized cluster of storms that had been plaguing the Gulf Coast for days came together to form Tropical Storm Arthur on Wednesday — the first tropical cyclone of the season in the Atlantic basin.Flash flooding was the main threat from Arthur, a weak tropical storm that the National Hurricane Center in Miami said would be short-lived. Maximum sustained winds were around 40 mph (65 kph), with little change in strength forecast before it is expected to dissipate by Wednesday night or early Thursday. The storm hung over coastal Texas on the same day a World Cup match was being played between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Houston. The stadium is covered, and no plans were announced to move or reschedule the match.National Hurricane Center director Michael Brennan said during a briefing that flash flood warnings were already being issued in the Houston metro area, with more likely to follow across the region, even after the center of the storm passes. “The main threat from Arthur is going to be a prolonged, multiday, heavy rainfall event that could produce dangerous to life threatening flash flooding,” Brennan said. A teenager appears to have drowned in a flooded retention pond outside Houston, authorities said Tuesday evening. A group of teens were playing near a construction zone and an adjacent retention pond when a 15-year-old boy entered the water, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said on social media. Rescue workers found his body using sonar technology following an extensive search. Read More “This incident serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers associated with floodwaters, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall,” the post said.Flooding was likely through Friday over parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and the Florida Panhandle, the hurricane center said. The tropical storm is expected to produce rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters), with isolated higher totals near 20 inches (50 centimeters). The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. Swells generated by Arthur are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the northwestern Gulf Coast for the next couple of days. Tornadoes are possible through Thursday. The center of Tropical Storm Arthur was located Wednesday morning about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east-northeast of Port O’Connor, Texas, according to an advisory. The storm was moving northeast near 9 mph (15 kph), and an increase in forward speed was expected.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

APNEWS.COMGeorgia Republican legislative leaders reject governor’s call for 2028 redistrictingPeople demonstrate during a special legislative session at the state capitol, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in Atlanta. (AP Photo/Mike Stewart)2026-06-17T04:20:58Z ATLANTA (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Georgia said Wednesday that they won’t redraw congressional and state legislative districts for the 2028 elections during a special session called by GOP Gov. Brian Kemp.In a letter to Kemp, Republican House leaders said changes to Georgia’s maps should take place only after a deliberative process providing the public ample opportunity for input. They also noted that legal challenges are still ongoing against some of their current districts. The decision marked a setback for both Kemp and President Donald Trump, who has urged Republican-led states to redraw congressional districts to their advantage.THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia is the next Southern state where Republicans are convening to redraw voting districts in ways that could diminish the political power of Black and other nonwhite voters after the U.S. Supreme Court gutted Voting Rights Act provisions that helped shape existing boundaries in racially diverse states. The General Assembly convenes Wednesday in a special session called by outgoing Gov. Brian Kemp in response to the court’s Louisiana v. Callais decision, which struck down Louisiana’s congressional map as an illegal racial gerrymander. Kemp, who is in the final months of his second term, deviated from other governors who fast-tracked new congressional maps for the November midterms partly in response to President Donald Trump’s pleas to shore up the party’s chances at maintaining control of Congress. Kemp instead wants Georgia lawmakers to draw districts for the 2028 elections. Yet the governor moved ahead of his Southern counterparts by asking the Republican-controlled Assembly to redraw its own boundaries, as well. Read More That would make Georgia the first state to apply Callais to its legislature and demonstrate the cascading effect of the high court’s decision across Southern states with the nation’s highest proportions of Black voters and Black lawmakers. The issue is especially salient in Georgia, where the Capitol complex includes a statue of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and sits blocks from where the slain civil rights icon lived, preached and led the movement that yielded the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Still, neither Kemp nor Republican legislative leaders had unveiled proposed changes as of Wednesday morning, frustrating Democrats and activists who plan daily demonstrations throughout the session.“They have not been transparent,” said state Rep. Tanya Miller, a Black legislator from Atlanta who is the Democratic nominee for attorney general. “Something as fundamental as voters getting to choose their leaders ought not to be done in the dark, ought not happen in back rooms.”Several Republican lawmakers said Wednesday morning they still had not seen proposed districts, and Kemp’s office had not scheduled any public remarks from the governor.House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones, a veteran of earlier redistricting efforts, said Tuesday that the outcome “will be a legislative prerogative” — a notion Kemp aides confirmed. But Jones said that even as a top-ranking Republican on the committee that would consider new maps, she hasn’t “been in any room creating maps.” Asked directly who is drawing new districts, she replied: “I don’t know.” Conservative justices gave the green lightBefore Callais, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was understood to require maps — for Congress, state legislatures and local legislative bodies — that gave historically marginalized minorities a reasonable chance to select candidates of their choice. Nationally and in Georgia, those so-called “opportunity districts” have disproportionately elected Black and other nonwhite representatives. For example, about a third of Georgia’s 180 state representatives are Black. Latino, Asian and other minorities bring the total nonwhite share to about 40% — roughly reflecting the state’s overall population. Georgia’s U.S. House delegation has five districts out of 14 total where the electorate is majority or plurality nonwhite. All elected Black Democrats in 2024. With the Callais ruling, issued earlier this spring, a conservative majority of justices concluded that jurisdictions drawn with racial makeup in mind are discriminatory and violate the U.S. Constitution’s equal protection clause. The justices declared that apportionment should be “race neutral.”Their stated reasoning did not hinge on party interests, and federal courts have said partisan gerrymandering is constitutionally permissible. But in Southern states, especially, party loyalty dovetails considerably with race and ethnicity. So the decision has allowed Republicans — a party dominated by white people — to redraw maps to goose likely GOP districts by redistributing nonwhite voters who tend to support Democrats. That, many civil rights activists and experts argue, makes it impossible for Southern legislatures to be genuinely “race neutral” when drawing boundaries. Emory University professor Carol Anderson compared Callais and the resulting redistricting push to poll taxes and literacy tests imposed by white Southern conservatives — and blessed by the Supreme Court — during the Jim Crow era. “They used racially neutral language for policies that were clearly racially targeted,” said Anderson, who is also a board member of Fair Fight Action, a group organizing against the Georgia redistricting. There are risks for Kemp and RepublicansIt’s not guaranteed that Georgia Republicans can get what they want from new maps. Partisan gerrymandering involves redistributing voters — packing certain citizens into fewer districts or dividing them across more districts. Around metro Atlanta, spreading nonwhite, Democratic-leaning voters across more districts could make more seats seem to lean Republican. The risk, however, is that more battleground districts emerge because white metropolitan voters are trending less conservative, which could give Democratic candidates of any race or ethnicity more chances to win. That’s perhaps not a major factor in the Georgia state Senate, which already is considered gerrymandered for Republicans. But it could be a consideration when drawing state House and U.S. House maps. Kemp is effectively asking Republicans, especially in metro Atlanta, to redraw their own boundaries and take on new, unfamiliar territory. Trump started the fight before the Supreme Court decisionNationally, a partisan redistricting battle started last year when Trump urged Republican-controlled states to redraw congressional boundaries to shore up the GOP’s narrow House majority in Washington this November. Texas answered the call first.California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democrats in Sacramento answered with their own gerrymander that voters later approved. A succession of states followed. The outcome would have been close to even had the Virginia Supreme Court, controlled by conservatives, not struck down new Democratic-drawn maps approved by the state’s voters. All told, Republicans think they could gain as many as 16 seats from their redistricting efforts while Democrats think they could gain six seats from new districts in California and Utah. That still may not be enough for the GOP to hold a congressional majority, given Trump’s lagging approval ratings. But it could mitigate Democratic gains and set Republicans up well for 2028 and beyond. BILL BARROW Barrow covers U.S. politics for The Associated Press. APNEWS.COMAncient teeth from Siberia rewrite the plague’s timeline, dating back to over 5,500 years agoThis 2006 image from Angela Lieverse shows the skull of a young girl who was buried with victims of the plague in Siberia. (Angela Lieverse via AP)2026-06-17T15:02:18Z NEW YORK (AP) — Scientists have found the oldest known evidence of the plague, which sparked deadly outbreaks dating back about 5,500 years ago — some 200 years earlier than previously thought. The disease has sickened humans for thousands of years and wiped out a significant chunk of Europe’s population in the 14th century during what’s known as the Black Death. Though rare, the plague is still around today and is treated with antibiotics. “To understand our own history, we believe that understanding the history of plague is extremely important,” said study co-author Eske Willerslev, an evolutionary geneticist with the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Willerslev and other researchers looked for traces of plague-causing bacteria in remains from four cemeteries near Siberia’s Lake Baikal. They found remnants of plague DNA in teeth from 18 ancient hunter-gatherers. Dating the carbon in the bones revealed that the plague triggered two outbreaks, with the first cases detected around 5,500 years ago.The team found that the prehistoric plague developed in stages and infected several small families. It likely spread from marmots — large native rodents — when people ate their raw organs or touched infected hides during butchery. The disease also traveled between people through coughing and sneezing, the authors said. Many of those who died were young children aged 8 to 11. Three young girls were buried side by side, two of whom were likely cousins. An aunt and nephew were found together, but her niece was in a different shared grave, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Read More “People were around to bury the dead who knew who these people were when they were alive. And that’s a really human element to all of the scientific work,” said study co-author Ruairidh Macleod, who studies ancient DNA at the University of Oxford. Kids may have been at greater risk because their immune systems weren’t as strong, researchers said. The presence of multiple victims suggests that the prehistoric plague was capable of causing both individual cases and outbreaks, said geneticist Aida Andrades Valtueña with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. She had no role in the study.Researchers found that this type of ancient plague evolved long before bubonic plague, which was responsible for the Black Death that struck medieval Europe. But there’s evidence that earlier plagues were just as deadly. The disease decimated not only crowded cities, but also small, nomadic hunter-gatherer groups.Knowing this can help us “understand the steps that the bacterium took to become the deadly pathogen we know today, and that can provide clues on how pathogens may emerge in the future,” Andrades Valtueña said in an email.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. APNEWS.COMRetail sales up a strong 0.9% in May, underscoring the resilience of the US consumerA employee works at a cash register in a grocery store in Schaumburg, Ill., Thursday, May 14, 2026. (AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh, File)2026-06-17T12:40:23Z NEW YORK (AP) — Shoppers stepped up their spending in May and surpassed expectations as temperatures warmed and gasoline prices leveled off. Retail sales rose 0.9%, up from a revised 0.4% gain in April, according to Commerce Department data released Wednesday. Sales got a boost from generous government tax refunds in both April and May, though economists say that cash cushion is starting to fade. Excluding sales at gas stations, retail sales in May rose 0.7%. The figures aren’t inflation-adjusted so higher prices likely helped boost sales. But economists point to healthy spending with increases that were broad-based. Business at clothing, accessory and furniture stores all posted sales gains. Online sales rose 1.5%. There were a few weak spots. Electronics and appliance stores and department stores both registered slight sales declines. The data offers only a snapshot of consumer spending and doesn’t include activities like travel and hotel stays. The lone services category – restaurants – registered a 0.1% decline. That might have reflected how high gas prices forced shoppers to cut back on driving to eating establishments, according to Sam Tombs, chief U.S. economist at Pantheon Macro. But the so-called control group—which excludes food services, autos, building materials and gas station sales and is used to calculate economic growth—rose 0.7%. That suggests solid spending, economists said. Read More Consumers are the engine of the American economy, driving most of the nation’s economic growth. And the latest retail sales report underscores that spending has remained resilient so far this year despite rising prices. Solid increases in hiring have also buoyed spending, economists said.“The stronger-than-forecast and broad-based gains in May retail sales show that consumers continued to spend strongly despite higher gasoline prices in the month,” Nationwide Chief Economist Kathy Bostjancic writes. “The large tax refunds and overall tax reductions for households this year and the recent strengthening in employment growth helped buffer the negative drag from higher gasoline prices.” Tombs was more cautious about the spending outlook. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.5% last month, after big gains of 0.6% in April and 0.9% in March. There is a tentative deal to end the Iran war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but even after oil starts flowing again from the Middle East it could take awhile for the supply crunch to ease. Gas prices fell about a penny overnight to $4.02, down 11% from a month ago, according to motor club AAA. The national average for a gallon of gasoline has not been below $4 since March, according to AAA. “While the deal is encouraging, our industry is still holding its breath,” said Steve Lamar, the CEO of trade group American Apparel & Footwear Association. ”Our question now is, will this agreement be strong enough for our global industry to begin recovering?” Lamar noted that unplanned costs continue to squeeze profit margins, with companies facing higher expenses for ocean freight, air cargo and packaging. He said that even under the best-case scenario, it will take time to stabilize. The spike in gas prices this year due to the Iran war may alter some behavior, peace deal or not. Even as gas prices continue to retreat, analysts say some shoppers will stick to habits they picked up as prices soared, like filling up the car at big box stores where they can get discounts. Visits to gas stations operated by big box chains like BJ’s, Costco and Sam’s Club, which offer discounts to members, began to accelerate in early March, aligning with a sharp rise in fuel prices, said R.J. Hottovy, the head of analytical research at Placer.ai, which tracks people’s movements based on cellphone usage. APNEWS.COMWarsh to face spotlight as Federal Reserve likely to leave interest rates unchangedFederal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh speaks during his swearing-in in the East Room of the White House, Friday, May 22, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2026-06-17T04:01:06Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve will enter the Kevin Warsh era Wednesday, as President Trump’s pick to lead the central bank oversees his first policy meeting and holds his first news conference. Yet Warsh isn’t expected to immediately usher in significant policy changes. The Fed is likely to keep its key rate unchanged Wednesday at about 3.6% for the fourth straight meeting, economists say. Fed policymakers could change their post-meeting statement so that it no longer signals the central bank’s next move will be to reduce interest rates. Such a change would suggest it could keep rates unchanged for an extended period — or even raise them if inflation stays elevated. Wednesday’s highlight is likely to be the press conference Warsh will hold in the afternoon, which Wall Street investors, economists, and quite likely the White House will closely watch to see how Warsh conducts himself. Warsh was previously an investment banker, a member of the Fed’s board of governors from 2006-2011, and a visiting fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution. Fed-watchers will look for clues to the answers to some key questions: What, if anything, will he signal about where interest rates will head next? How does he think the Fed should address the elevated inflation stemming from the Iran war and its boost to gas prices? Will he change the Fed’s communication practices, and how? It’s possible, for example, that Warsh could cut the number of press conferences each year from eight — one after each meeting — to four, or one after every other meeting, which was the approach taken by former chair Ben Bernanke when he inaugurated the post-meeting press conference. Warsh has said he would like the Fed to lower its public profile and reduce its commentary on the economy, which he thinks can lock in Fed officials to supporting specific policies for too long, simply because they’ve expressed their support publicly. Read More Yet reduced communication — whether through fewer press conferences or other means — risks alienating the public and financial markets, which have grown used to clear guidance on where the Fed is headed. Warsh also faces a sharply different economic environment than when he appeared to campaign for the job of Fed chair last year. Back then, he was outspoken in favor of lower interest rates, as Trump has demanded. He pointed to the development of AI as a technology that could vastly expand the economy’s ability to produce goods and services cheaply, which would over time bring down inflation. Even then, many economists were skeptical of his claim. At least in the short run, analysts note that soaring investment in semiconductors and computing equipment is contributing to higher inflation. Indeed, since the Iran war began Feb. 28, inflation has accelerated to a three-year high of 4.2%, lifted mostly by costlier gas stemming from the Iran war. The Fed typically fights higher inflation by raising its key interest rate to cool spending and growth. Trump has announced an initial peace agreement that could bring the three-month conflict to an end, but it’s not clear if peace will hold. And even if oil flows freely out of the Middle East again, it could take months for prices of gas, groceries, and items such as airline fares, to cool. Already, inflation according to the Fed’s preferred measure has topped its 2% target for more than five years. At the same time, hiring has picked up in recent months, removing a key rationale for cutting rates. In January, the Fed forecast that it would reduce rates twice this year, as part of its quarterly economic projections. A big reason for those potential cuts is that employers were shedding jobs and policymakers worried that the unemployment rate would rise. The central bank typically cuts its key rate to spur economic growth and hiring. But earlier this month a government report showed that hiring jumped in May, when employers added 172,000 jobs, the third straight month of solid job gains. Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has repeatedly demanded that the Fed cut its key rate. Yet in recent weeks as inflation has picked up, he has said he wants “Kevin” to be independent and make his own decisions. But he also said earlier this month that the Fed shouldn’t raise rates, despite higher inflation. Trump repeatedly attacked Warsh’s predecessor, Jerome Powell, for not cutting rates deeply enough. In January, the Department of Justice even launched an unprecedented investigation into Powell over brief testimony he gave last July about a building renovation. A federal judge threw out the DOJ’s subpoenas in the case and the government dropped the investigation. The move largely backfired, as Powell decided to stay on the Fed’s board of governors even after his term as chair ended May 15. He can serve a separate term as governor until January 2028. By staying on, he has denied the Trump administration an opportunity to fill an additional seat on the seven-member board. Powell is expected to vote on the Fed’s rate decision Wednesday. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMConservatives freak out over cheerful message from gay/straight alliance teensA high school Pride Month display telling students to “Have a Gay Summer!” sparked conservative outrage across the country after an angry parent shared a photo of the message on social media. In the photo at Massachusetts’s Dartmouth High School, the bright-colored letters are taped to a bulletin board, along with two Pride flags, a photo of Marsha P. Johnson, a photo of Harvey Milk, a photo of Alan Turing, and a grid of rainbow Post-it notes containing positive messages like “love yourself” and “you’re amazing.” Related Happy Straight Pride Month! Wait… let me double check my notes “This is NOT ok,” wrote parent Lynne Turner on social media, alongside a snapshot of the display. “It needs to be removed and an apology needs to be made to the children and parents of Dartmouth kids. Schools are supposed to educate and prepare students for successful careers, as well as give them skills for life.” “DHS, pushing gay ideology on our youth is NOT your place!!!” Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Turner continued to update her post as she communicated with school officials. She said the principal told her the board was created by a student-led Gay/Straight Alliance group and approved by the group’s adult sponsor. “He does not have a problem with it because he feels that the messages are positive on the sticky notes…. He said the bulletin board will be up for another week, until school gets out.” She continued, “I let him know the photo is online and I told him the problem many of us have is not the positive affirmations on the small sticky notes, but in the big words telling everyone to, ‘Have a Gay Summer’. This message is NOT inclusive, it is suggesting their gay orientation for everyone, or for ‘gay’ acts to occur over summer. I also suggested that some people see this as grooming…” She said the principal did not agree that it was grooming and also said he “highly doubts that someone walking by the bulletin board will want to become gay.” “I responded that I think it does promote becoming gay, or considering being gay… and joining the club… especially for kids who feel like they don’t really fit in other places, or are lonely,” Turner said. “I told him I thought the large words were inappropriate, and that he should make a public apology and change the words.” The principal refused, she said, adding that she has now moved on to campaigning for the superintendent. GOP state legislative candidate Chester Tam reposted Turner’s message and added his own disapproving thoughts about the bulletin board. “Public schools are funded by all taxpayers and their job is to teach kids academics and critical thinking,” Tam said, “not promote specific sexual identities or activist messaging on the walls. A plain ‘have a great summer’ sign works just fine. One-sided ideological stuff like this is where a lot of reasonable people draw the line.” In the replies, he also claimed the message wasn’t inclusive to all students. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMA trans woman complained about her suffering in jail. Days later, guards found her dead.A transgender woman and community fixture in Birmingham, Alabama was found dead in the city’s jail last week, part of a pattern of neglect and deplorable conditions in the facility, trans advocates say. Another inmate died just three days later after an attempted suicide, according to city officials. Kalena “Peaches” Croskey, a 32-year-old Black trans woman, was found unresponsive during a routine check at Birmingham City Jail last Thursday afternoon and couldn’t be resuscitated, WTVM News reported. Related Federal judge blocks Trump administration’s plan to send 14 trans women to men’s prisons Jail staff tried to save her life and called for medical assistance, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office/ Croskey was later declared dead at the scene. TAKE Resource Center, a local trans advocacy organization, mourned the young woman’s passing. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “She brought light, laughter, and joy into every space she entered,” the group said in a statement. “Despite the many challenges she faced throughout her life, she never allowed those struggles to define her. Whether she was singing her favorite Beyoncé songs, voguing to the beat, creating glamorous makeup looks, or simply making others smile, Peaches found ways to experience joy and share it with those around her.” Croskey’s death was followed on Sunday by a suicide attempt by another inmate in the facility. That morning, jail staff found a 35-year-old man in an apparent act of self-harm. Birmingham Fire and Rescue took him to a local hospital, where he was evaluated and later released back to the jail, WTVM reported. After returning, Sweazer was placed on suicide watch, officials said. But just over three hours later, jail staff found the man unresponsive in his cell. Staff attempted to resuscitate the inmate, and he was returned to hospital, where he died later. According to city officials, a preliminary review found that jail staff followed established procedures in both Crokskey’s and the second inmate’s deaths. The Birmingham Police Department is conducting its own investigation. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has yet to announce the cause of death in either of the back-to-back cases. While it was unclear where Croskey was held in the Birmingham jail, initial reports from the city, repeated by local news outlets, identified Croskey as male. “This loss is not accidental,” TAKE Resource Center said of Croskey. “It is a tragic reminder of the failures within the carceral system. The lack of adequate mental health resources, combined with negligence and systemic shortcomings in our system, continues to cost lives.” Croskey had been held at the Birmingham jail since April 21, on charges including disorderly conduct, public intoxication, criminal mischief, and two counts of third-degree assault. TAKE Resource Center founder and executive director Daroneshia Duncan-Boyd, a close friend of Croskey’s, shared the challenges she faced in the deteriorating jail, including bullying by other inmates, lack of access to specialty medications, a failure to prioritize medically necessary appointments, inedible food, pest infestations, broken windows, and the absence of air conditioning in the facility. “Despite living with untreated mental illness and having to navigate this world alone in your trans identity, you still managed to bring so many people joy,” Duncan-Boyd said to her friend in a post to social media. “The love you had for me is something I can’t fully put into words. Once again, a system has failed you.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRed Sox’s offensive collapse proves they need a reload, not a rebuild at trade deadlineRed Sox’s offensive collapse proves they need a reload, not a rebuild at trade deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. With the 6-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last night, the Red Sox are now 29-41 on the season, and are still 5.5 games behind the final spot in the AL Wildcard. While they are holding in this area, their chance to make the playoffs gets slimmer and slimmer. What’s costing them these games is their offense, which really only shows up in the ninth inning, but it’s too little too late. While this year may be a wash, it doesn’t mean they need to blow up the team and enter a rebuild.Boston’s offense has been terrible © Thomas Shea-Imagn ImagesThis has probably been one of the worst offenses the Red Sox have ever put together in their franchise’s history. They are 0-38 when trailing going into the ninth, and when they go down by three runs, it pretty much means game over. What’s funnier is the Red Sox have one of the best offenses in the ninth inning. However, since they don’t do anything in the first eight, it really doesn’t mean much.On top of that, they are one of the worst when it comes to leaving runners on base. Last night’s game was totally winnable, but Boston left 13 men on base. If they want to win games, they need at least one more consistent slugger to get their offense going.Reload instead of rebuild © Paul Rutherford-Imagn ImagesBecause of this whole season, some people are expecting Boston to just sell everything at the deadline, and rebuild around Roman Anthony, Garrett Crochet, and some of their other young stars. However, while it shouldn’t be the total opposite, it should be near it. The Sox should trade a few people though, like Aroldis Chapman, and maybe Garrett Whitlock. Those two could command a lot at the deadline, and Boston can use what they get to reload next season. Jarren Duran, Trevor Story, IFK and a few others could round out the list too, all suggested by MLB insider Jeff Passan. This would give Boston a lot of roster space to work with, and fill in the holes around their stars who really are irreplaceable. If they can get some true studs to help them, they could salvage this season, or they could be totally ready to contend next year.MORE MLB NEWSGiants putting Willy Adames on market could give Red Sox their missing offensive starRed Sox may have chance to bring Rafael Devers back after Giants put him on trade blockConnelly Early’s struggles could put his Red Sox future under the microscope sooner than expected0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Texas Super Kings fared in Major League Cricket 2025Texas Super Kings enjoyed another strong Major League Cricket campaign in 2025, finishing second in the league stage with seven wins from 10 matches and a tournament-best net run-rate of +1.603. Led by the prolific Faf du Plessis and backed by a potent bowling attack, TSK emerged as one of the most consistent sides of the season before falling short in the playoffs.Texas began the tournament with three consecutive wins and recovered well from a mid-season wobble that saw them lose back-to-back matches against San Francisco Unicorns and Washington Freedom. They responded strongly by winning four of their final five league matches, including a dramatic one-run defeat to the Unicorns that proved to be their only setback during that phase.Rain denied TSK the opportunity to challenge Washington Freedom in the Qualifier, but they received another chance through the Challenger. However, their title hopes ended when MI New York produced a commanding chase to deny them a place in the final.Season record: 10 matches, 7 wins, 3 lossesLongest winning streak: 3 matchesBiggest victory: Won by 93 runs vs Seattle OrcasBiggest defeat: Lost by 7 wickets vs San Francisco Unicorns and Washington FreedomFinal position: 2nd in league stageMatch-by-matchMatch 2: Beat MI New York by 3 runsTexas Super Kings began their campaign with a tense victory. TSK posted 220/6, only for Washington Freedom to complete the chase with two balls to spare.Match 15: Beat Los Angeles Knight Riders by 52 runsTexas bounced back in style, making 196/8 and restricting LAKR to 144/7 to return to winning ways.Match 21: Beat MI New York by 39 runsTSK posted 223/4 and then produced a disciplined bowling effort to limit MI New York to 184/9, strengthening their playoff credentials.Match 23: Beat Washington Freedom by 43 runsA rain-reduced five-over contest saw Texas make 87/2 before restricting Washington to 44/4. The victory helped them maintain momentum heading into the final stages.Match 25: Lost to San Francisco Unicorns by 1 runOne of the closest matches of the tournament ended in heartbreak. Chasing 149, Texas finished on 147/7 and fell agonisingly short by a single run.Match 28: Beat Seattle Orcas by 51 runsTexas closed out the league phase on a high, posting 188/4 and bowling out Seattle for 137 to finish second in the standings.Qualifier: Match abandoned against Washington FreedomPersistent rain forced the Qualifier to be abandoned after the toss. TSK missed out on a direct route to the final and were pushed into the Challenger.Challenger: Lost to MI New York by 7 wicketsTexas posted 166/5 but were outplayed by MI New York, who chased down the target with an over to spare to knock TSK out of the tournament.Top performersBatting starsFaf du Plessis, 468 runsThe Texas captain enjoyed a magnificent season, finishing as the team's leading run-scorer with 468 runs in 10 innings. Faf du Plessis led from the front with the bat, while the bowling unit featuring Noor Ahmad, Adam Milne and Akeal Hosein provided the foundation for another successful league campaign. However, rain in the Qualifier and a defeat to eventual champions MI New York in the Challenger meant TSK's title ambitions remained unfulfilled. Despite the disappointing finish, a second-place finish in the league stage and another playoff appearance reinforced their reputation as one of the strongest teams in the competition.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 11 Visualizações 0 Anterior

There are plenty of players who fit the bill, one of whom comes from the Chicago Cubs.Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN linked the Red Sox to Cubs infielder Matt Shaw, who they project has a 40% chance of being traded, as a potential trade fit. The German team — which secured a 7-1 victory over Curaçao in its first World Cup game on June 14 — reportedly spotted a copperhead snake as they trained at W.
