U.S. Olympian Caroline Harvey earns latest accolade in being voted IIHF female player of the year

Mandatory Credit: Amber Searls-Imagn ImagesAmber Searls/Amber Searls-Imagn ImagesThe accolades keep coming for Caroline Harvey, with the U.S. national team and Wisconsin defender named the International Ice Hockey Federation’s female player of the year. The honor caps a year in which the 23-year-old Harvey cemented her claim in being her generation’s most accomplished player.Harvey was the overwhelming favorite in receiving more than 77% of the votes, the IIHF said. She finished ahead of Switzerland forward Alina Muller (9.1%), who scored her second career bronze medal-clinching goal at the Milan Cortina Games in February. Harvey’s U.S. and Badgers teammate Laila Edwards and Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin finished third with 4.5% of the votes. To top it off, the IIHF honor comes the same day Harvey is expected to be selected with the first pick in the PWHL draft being held in Detroit. From Pelham, New Hampshire, Harvey is the first defender and second American to earn the IIHF honor, joining Hilary Knight, who won the inaugural award in 2023.In making her second Olympic appearance, Harvey won gold and was named the tournament’s MVP at Milan. A month later, she won her third NCAA championship with Wisconsin, while also being voted this season’s Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner as college women’s hockey’s MVP.With two goals and seven assists in seven games at Milan, Harvey finished the Olympic tournament tied for the most points. At Wisconsin, her 64 points (18 goals, 46 assists) set a single-season school record for most points by a defender, and Harvey finished tied for third in points.

Cyclones bring energy and mentorship to Des Moines youth
Jaylen Raynor and members of the kids at Levitt Club break down a huddle with, "Cyclones!" | Jared Larson DES MOINES – Carver Elementary School’s gymnasium was recently transformed into a field of mentorship and athletic development as Iowa State football players spent Monday afternoon leading drills and building relationships at the Boys & Girls Club. The event held at the Ellis I. Levitt Club, was supported by T-Mobile, aimed to provide local youth with a memorable experience while reinforcing the university’s deep ties to the Ames community.“Healthy Lifestyles and Character and Leadership are two of our core pillars incorporated into daily programming at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa,” Kim Peter, Corporate and Donor Engagement Coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa said. “On Monday, Club kids at Levitt Club enjoyed participating in a football clinic led by members of the Iowa State Football team. The seven stations offered kids the chance to practice drills and skills while interacting with local athletes who are role models for their sport. We’re grateful to T-Mobile for facilitating this three-way partnership and enriching our Summer Club experience!”Zaimir Hawk, a redshirt junior defensive lineman, reflected on how the club shaped his childhood and he felt compelled to return as a mentor.“Honestly it means a lot because I’m a former Boys & Girls Club member so just to be able to be a part of this just means a lot to me because I always wanted to be a part of something like this when I was younger,” Hawk said. “So just to be able to give back to the community and everybody else that supports us is a wonderful thing. Honestly, that was the first time I ever went outdoors and camping—it put me outside of my comfort zone. I think that that’s what a lot of kids need nowadays is to be put out of their comfort zone to be able to know what they’re capable of because that’s what every human needs especially at a young age.”Regarding the talent he saw on the field today, Hawk added:“Watching the kids do the D-line drill, watching the confusion then the ‘Ah OK I get it.’ Watching them work hard and just finishing through no matter how it looked… They were just happy at the end of the day. If I’m being honest, a lot of these kids had a lot of potential. We need to recruit at the Boys & Girls Club.”Several transfers were in attendance, including Jaylen Raynor (formerly of Arkansas State), Braden Smith (Tarleton State), Tristan Exlin (UT Permian Basin), Evan Boyd (Michigan State), and Trevor Fortenberry (Copiah-Lincoln CC). Their involvement with the 60 young participants likely turned those children into the newest members of the Cyclone fanbase.“It’s a lot of fun to come out here, get involved with the community with some of my teammates just to have some fun and get some kids active and moving around… Trying to continue to pour into the community. They pour so much into us with the support on every Saturday. [The fans] are super passionate. They’re loving. They’re consistent. They always show up and show out. I’m excited to get into the stadium this fall and play in front of them.”“I’m looking forward to being on the home side of Jack Trice when they do the Juicy Wiggle,” Raynor adds. “It wasn’t too fun on the opposite sideline when everybody’s doing the same dance and you’re down. Right now we’re just focused on improving each day… we’re going to continue to try to focus day by day and stack those days to the point where we’re ready for the season.”For Aiden Flora, who played high school football 30 minutes west of Carver Elementary, the camp was truly close to home.“It’s awesome, these kids look up to us,” Flora said. “When we were little, we looked up to football players, like us too. It’s awesome giving back to them. Hopefully we can spread some happiness in their lives.”Jerry Brantley, board president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa, a college football player himself at Coe from 1999 to 2003, highlighted how the seamless interaction between the players and the children created a unique environment for teaching skills and fostering confidence.“This is a special day for these kids. Being able to have your local college athletes come—these athletes that have dedicated time, resources and energy to developing their skills, but not only that, their leadership and their character. Those are tenets that we like to teach here at the Boys & Girls Club. Just having the opportunity… knowing that there are adults who care… I saw one kid almost knock the player down hitting the bag and man, she had some power. It was just a day I think they will remember forever.”“The interactions I saw from the players, I felt like they were part of the Boys & Girls Club staff, like they’ve been doing this their whole life,” Brantley adds. The partnership was facilitated by T-Mobile, which is continuing the legacy of community involvement previously established by US Cellular. Jenae Bradley, a regional manager for T-Mobile, explained that the goal was to help children build confidence and create a lasting bond with the athletes. “Hopefully when they see those Iowa State Cyclones on the field this fall, they’ll feel really connected and remember this day,” Bradley said. The day concluded with a shared sense of pride, as Zaimir summed up the spirit with five words: “Go Iowa State. Go Cyclones.”

Kentucky football joins the race for a 2029 quarterback Ryder Flugence
It was early March, the kind of Houston morning where the heat hasn't fully committed yet but you can feel it coming, and the deep-ball line at the Rivals Combine was already backed up by the time class of 2029 prospect Ryder Flugence got his rep. He's hard to miss in that line—6 foot 5 with a frame that still has room to grow into itself, but it wasn't the height that got attention. It was the throw. Easy lower half, no wasted motion, and a ball that left his hand on a line and just kept carrying, the way the good ones do, until it dropped into a receiver's hands forty-some yards downfield like it had been on rails the whole way. I wrote his name down that morning and underlined it. I knew right then this was a name to remember.Three months later, it isn't just me remembering it. It's half the SEC. The Kentucky Wildcats are the latest to get in line, and Will Stein didn't waste time once he saw what I saw: a developmental frame with the loose, easy actions that are nearly impossible to teach, attached to a player who's barely played a full season yet. That's the part of this story that should grab Big Blue Nation by the collar: the SEC staffs chasing Flugence right now are chasing the same throw I watched live in Houston, not a finished product. They're betting on the trajectory. That trajectory starts with the frame. At 205 pounds with three years of high school left to add to it, Flugence has the kind of length you can't manufacture in a weight room you either have it or you're projecting someone into it, and evaluators always prefer the former. What stood out watching him live, the same thing that shows up on tape, is that he already plays smaller than his size. His feet reset under pressure instead of bailing outside the structure, which is the harder trait to find in a quarterback this tall—most long-framed passers take years to learn how to stay compact in the pocket instead of getting stiff and panicked when the first read disappears. Flugence has clearly been coached, or simply wired, to avoid that trap already. It doesn't just stop at QB, his experience on both sides of the ball has already set a separator that is shaping his solid foundation. That two-way background tends to show up as instinctive ball skills and spatial awareness—the kind of feel pure pocket passers without a defensive or receiving background often have to be taught from nothing.None of this comes with a deep résumé yet, and it's worth saying plainly. Flugence spent 2025 as Boerne Champion's backup, finishing the season with 570 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions on 61.4 percent passing in spot duty—production that came in flashes, not as a full-time starter, highlighted by a fourth-and-1 touchdown plunge that helped clinch a playoff berth in November. This is a traits evaluation more than a production-based one right now, and there isn't enough tape yet to know how he'll handle a full season of high-level competition. But the same was true of plenty of quarterbacks who turned into exactly what their traits promised once they got the reps to match. He carried himself in Houston the same understated way his words suggest he sees all of this—no theatrics between reps and no main-character energy in a setting full of teenagers performing for college coaches. That tracks with how he talked about this stretch of his recruitment when we caught up with him on the road this summer. "It means a lot to me," he said. "I am so thankful that the Lord has allowed and blessed me to be in all of these positions I have been able to be in, and I truly say that none of this is possible without the Lord. I feel that it is a testament to the work I have been putting in from day one, when I realized I wanted to play football at the next level and want to be good at it." That's a credit-spreading, work-first answer from a player whose recruitment is moving faster than almost anyone else's in his class—the kind of grounded response scouts notice before they ever get back to wins and losses. It's also exactly why Kentucky's pursuit reads as more than a relationship play. Will Stein has built his head-coaching case on turning talented arms into finished products—Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel both arrived in Eugene with real ability and left as Heisman finalists with cleaner, faster decision-making than when he got them, and he laid that same groundwork earlier in his career with Garrett Wilson at Lake Travis High School, not far from Flugence's own Hill Country backyard. New offensive coordinator Joe Sloan brings a parallel résumé from the other sideline, having called the plays for Jayden Daniels' Heisman season at LSU, an offense that averaged better than 45 points a game that year. Flugence framed the appeal almost the same way himself. "I think the level of coaching and the style of the offense stand out," he said. "Both Coach Stein and Sloan have a great history with quarterbacks and preparing them for the next level. Their offense is very multiple and is great for preparing quarterbacks for the next level." For a player this early in his development, "multiple" matters—it means he won't be locked into one launch point or one read structure before his footwork and processing have had a chance to catch up to his arm.The field assembling around him backs up just how widely that profile is being read. I would say the schools standing out to me are Alabama, Texas Tech, Georgia, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Baylor, in no particular order. Flugence said a list that sits on top of an offer sheet that also includes TCU, Vanderbilt, and UTSA, among others. What jumps out about that group isn't just its size; it's the variety. SEC pro-style builders like Alabama, Georgia, and Texas A&M see the same translatable length and arm talent that Big 12 programs like Texas Tech, Baylor, and Oklahoma are chasing in their own faster-paced systems. A prospect who draws that kind of stylistic spread of interest this early is usually one whose tools are considered scheme-proof—good enough that the projection holds up no matter how the ball gets to him. What he says he's actually looking for in a landing spot lines up almost exactly with the pitch Kentucky is making. I'm looking for a school that I can be at for all the years I am in college; an offensive scheme that fits me; a coaching staff that cares about me and wants to see me thrive; a highly academic school; and to be around people who love the game and want to be successful.Strip that down, and it's continuity, scheme fit, coaching investment, academics, and competitive environment—five boxes that map almost one-to-one onto what stability under Stein and Sloan is selling. I keep coming back to Houston. One throw doesn't make a quarterback, and I knew that even as I underlined his name. But evaluation is mostly pattern recognition—you watch enough arms to know which ones make you stop scrolling your phone, and that one did it for me in March the way it's apparently doing it for recruiting coordinators across the SEC right now. Whether Flugence ends up at Kentucky or somewhere else on that list, the throw that stopped me cold on a Houston practice field is the same one that's about to make this the most-watched recruitment of the cycle in the Hill Country and Kentucky is now in the hunt of it.This article originally appeared on UK Wildcats Wire: Kentucky football offers 2029 quarterback Ryder Flugence

A Belgium victory would put R. Garcia’s side in prime position to secure qualification ahead of their final group game, while Iran, who have never progressed beyond the group stage in six previous World Cup appearances, know that a draw or better would keep their historic knockout ambitions alive. With goal difference currently separating nothing, every goal counts.VerdictBelgium are expected to have too much quality for Iran at SoFi Stadium, with Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku capable of unlocking a defence that conceded twice against New Zealand. A Belgium win to nil at the best available price offers genuine value given their defensive solidity and Iran’s reliance on set-piece moments rather than open-play creativity.Belgium vs Iran Match PreviewBelgium enter this fixture carrying the weight of expectation that has followed them to multiple World Cups. Under manager Rudi Garcia, the side drew 1-1 with Egypt in their opener, a result that was not catastrophic but underlined that this Belgian generation cannot afford complacency. With De Bruyne pulling strings from midfield and Lukaku leading the line, Belgium possess the attacking firepower to punish Iran’s limited European exposure, particularly through wide areas where Jeremy Doku’s pace should cause real problems.Iran, managed by Amir Ghalenoei, arrive at this fixture under extraordinary logistical pressure. U.S. authorities require the squad to enter the country the day before each match and depart again the same evening, leaving almost no time for preparation or recovery between fixtures. That disruption is a genuine handicap against a side of Belgium’s calibre. Nevertheless, Iran showed character in drawing 2-2 with New Zealand, with Mehdi Taremi providing the experienced focal point up front that Ghalenoei’s setup depends upon. The tactical shape of this game is likely to favour Belgium’s possession-based approach. Iran will look to sit deep, remain compact and hit on the counter through Taremi and Mehdi Ghayedi, but against a Belgium side with Thibaut Courtois in goal and an experienced defensive core, breaking through on the counter will be a tall order. The key question is whether Belgium can convert their expected dominance into goals efficiently enough to avoid a nervy finish.Team FormBelgium – Last 5: Egypt (H): Drew 1-1 (FIFA World Cup) Tunisia (H): Won 5-0 (Friendly) Croatia (A): Won 2-0 (Friendly) Mexico (N): Drew 1-1 (Friendly) United States (A): Won 5-2 (Friendly) Belgium’s form across their last five outings makes for encouraging reading in attack, with pre-tournament friendlies yielding a 5-0 win over Tunisia and a 5-2 victory against the United States. The 1-1 draw with Egypt in the World Cup opener tempers enthusiasm slightly, though it came against a well-organised African side in a high-pressure opener. Garcia’s team have the firepower; the question is whether they can be more clinical in a second group fixture that carries significantly more weight.Iran – Last 5: New Zealand (H): Drew 2-2 (FIFA World Cup) Mali (N): Won 2-0 (Friendly) Gambia (N): Won 3-1 (Friendly) Costa Rica (N): Won 5-0 (Friendly) Nigeria (N): Lost 1-2 (Friendly) Iran’s recent record looks reasonable on paper, with wins over Mali, Gambia and Costa Rica before the tournament, but the quality of opposition in those friendlies is modest. The 2-2 draw with New Zealand showed that Ghalenoei’s side can score but also concede, and a pre-tournament loss to Nigeria highlighted vulnerabilities against physically imposing opposition. Facing Belgium’s pace and technical quality is a significant step up.Team NewsBelgium’s squad for this tournament retains its experienced backbone. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal, while the midfield continues to be built around Kevin De Bruyne and captain Youri Tielemans. Romelu Lukaku, Belgium’s all-time leading scorer with 90 international goals in 126 caps, leads the attack, supported by the pace of Jeremy Doku. Leandro Trossard and Charles De Ketelaere provide further attacking depth should Garcia wish to rotate from the opening draw against Egypt. In defence, Zeno Debast and Arthur Theate provide a relatively young centre-back pairing, though both have gained valuable Champions League and club football experience. Maxim De Cuyper, who has contributed four goals in 19 caps, offers an attacking outlet from left-back. Belgium are expected to be close to full strength for this game, with no significant injury concerns reported ahead of kick-off.Iran’s squad, meanwhile, is drawn predominantly from domestic clubs, with Persepolis and Tractor each providing four players and Esteghlal contributing three. Captain Mehdi Taremi, with 60 goals in 105 caps, remains the focal point of Iran’s attack and is expected to start alongside Ghayedi and Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh in the forward line. Veteran defender Ehsan Hajsafi, Iran’s most-capped player with 146 appearances, anchors the defensive structure despite approaching the end of his international career. Saeid Ezatolahi screens the defence in midfield and will be crucial in disrupting Belgium’s rhythm.Predicted LineupsPredicted XI (4-3-3): Courtois; Castagne, Debast, Theate, De Cuyper; Onana, Tielemans (c), De Bruyne; Doku, Lukaku, TrossardPredicted XI – squads to be confirmed.Predicted XI (4-5-1): Beiranvand; Rezaeian, Kanaanizadegan, Hajsafi (c), Mohammadi; Jahanbakhsh, Ezatolahi, Torabi, Ghoddos, Mohebi; TaremiPredicted XI – squads to be confirmed.Key Tactical MatchupThe central duel that is likely to shape this game is Kevin De Bruyne operating between the lines against Saeid Ezatolahi’s attempts to screen Iran’s back four. De Bruyne, with 37 international goals in 119 caps, has the vision and delivery to unlock deep defences with a single pass, and Belgium’s recent scoring form, including nine goals attributed to De Bruyne across recent matches, underlines his threat. Ezatolahi’s role will be to press high and limit De Bruyne’s time on the ball, but if Belgium’s full-backs advance and stretch Iran’s shape, De Bruyne will find pockets of space that Iran’s domestically based defensive unit will struggle to deal with consistently across 90 minutes.Best BetsBetfred5.0Welcome BonusBet and Get New Bettor Bonus of £50 in Free Bets BET NOWHighbet 4.9Welcome BonusBet £10 and Get a £20 Free Bet BET NOWParimatch4.8Welcome BonusSports Welcome Offer Bet and Get for a £20 Free Bet BET NOWMain Pick: Belgium Win @ 4/9 Belgium are heavily favoured for good reason. Their squad depth, the presence of De Bruyne and Lukaku, and the logistical difficulties Iran face all point towards a home-side victory. Iran drew with New Zealand rather than winning, which limits the psychological uplift from their opener, while Belgium need three points to put themselves firmly in control of Group G qualification. At 4/9, the price is short but reflects a match Belgium are expected to win.Goals Market: Under 2.5 Goals @ 1/1 Despite Belgium’s attacking quality, Iran are likely to set up in a deep block designed to frustrate and limit space. Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Egypt in their opener showed that goals are not always forthcoming even against beatable opposition. The Under 2.5 goals line at evens carries genuine appeal, with Iran’s defensive organisation capable of keeping the score tight even if they ultimately succumb to a narrow Belgian victory.Scorer Market: Romelu Lukaku Anytime Scorer Lukaku has four goals across his last five appearances for Belgium and, as the focal point of their attacking line, he will be the first port of call for chances inside the area. Iran conceded twice against New Zealand and will face a sustained aerial and physical threat from Lukaku throughout. Check the best available price with leading operators ahead of kick-off.Bet Builder: Belgium Win and Under 3.5 Goals A narrow Belgium win, potentially 1-0 or 2-0, fits the expected match pattern: Belgium controlling possession, Iran sitting deep, and the scoreline reflecting dominance without being a rout. Combining a Belgium victory with under 3.5 total goals combines the main match winner market with a goals constraint that reflects how this game is likely to unfold, and the combined price should offer better value than either leg alone.Belgium vs Iran Betting OddsThe best available Belgium vs Iran betting odds across leading operators are as follows:Belgium Win – 4/9Draw – 4/1Iran Win – 8/1Over 2.5 Goals – 10/11Under 2.5 Goals – 1/1 Belgium are clear favourites at 4/9, with the draw a distant 4/1 and an Iran victory rated a long-shot at 8/1. The totals market is evenly balanced around the 2.5 line, reflecting uncertainty about whether Belgium can break Iran down freely or whether Iran’s defensive structure will keep the game tight. How to Watch and How to BetHow to Watch Belgium vs IranBelgium vs Iran kicks off at 19:00 BST on Sunday 21 June 2026 and is broadcast live in the UK on ITV and ITVX. Hansi Flick and Barcelona delighted with teenage striker’s progress
Hansi Flick and Barcelona delighted with teenage striker’s progressFC Barcelona are increasingly convinced they made the right decision by securing Hamza Abdelkarim’s permanent transfer before the start of the 2026 World Cup.The Egyptian striker has quickly become one of the tournament’s most intriguing stories after making history as the youngest Arab footballer ever to appear at a World Cup. At just 18 years old, Abdelkarim’s inclusion in Egypt’s squad raised eyebrows, particularly given that he has yet to feature for either Barcelona’s first team or Barça Atletic. However, those inside the club have long believed in his potential, according to AS, with Flick and Barcelona delighted by the progress he has shown.A signing Barcelona were eager to secureShowing great potential. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)After spending six months on loan at the club, Barcelona’s sporting department recently agreed to pay €1.5 million to Egyptian side Al Ahly to complete the striker’s permanent transfer. The deal was finalised shortly before the World Cup, and the club now feels increasingly vindicated by that decision.Abdelkarim impressed during his time with Barcelona’s Juvenil A (U19) side, scoring six goals in eleven appearances and establishing himself as one of the most promising young forwards in the academy system. His rapid development has also caught the attention of first-team manager Hansi Flick. On Flick’s radarFlick is closely monitoring the teenager’s progress and could include him in Barcelona’s pre-season training camp in England if Egypt do not progress deep into the World Cup.The German coach is particularly interested in assessing him firsthand during the summer preparations.Flick is keeping an eye on Abdelkarim’s development. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde/Getty Images)With Barcelona still searching for a long-term solution at centre-forward and Ferran Torres potentially absent due to international commitments with Spain, Abdelkarim could even emerge as the club’s main striker during parts of pre-season.That opportunity would offer him a valuable chance to demonstrate his qualities at senior level.Barcelona’s development planBarcelona’s intention is for Abdelkarim to spend next season primarily with Barça Atletic while gradually earning opportunities with the senior squad. The club views him as a natural goalscorer with strong finishing instincts inside the penalty area. However, coaches are also working on expanding other aspects of his game.Particular focus is being placed on improving his understanding of team play, developing his link-up and combination play, and enhancing his decision-making outside the penalty box.The technical staff believe these refinements could significantly accelerate his progression towards first-team football. For Flick and Barcelona, the coming weeks could provide an invaluable opportunity to assess just how quickly the Egyptian striker can make the leap towards senior football.

Maritime data company says stranded ships have begun transiting the Strait of Hormuz
2026-06-18T15:44:43Z Major shipowners have begun moving vessels through the Strait of Hormuz since the U.S. and Iran signed an agreement Wednesday, according to maritime data company Lloyd’s List Intelligence. In a media briefing, Richard Meade, editor in chief of Lloyd’s List, said for the first time in 110 days, ships owned by major companies are transiting the strait after effectively being marooned there since February. The strait is a critical passageway for the world’s oil and natural gas. Its closure has created a historic energy crisis. They did not give data on how many ships have passed through the strait as of Thursday. Tankers controlled by major ship owners Grimaldi Group, Cosco, Knutsen and NYK have passed through the strait. And two Iran-flagged, National Iranian Tanker Company-owned, sanctioned crude oil tankers have entered the strait, according to Lloyd’s List. Phillip Belcher, marine director of Intertanko, a trade group for global independent tanker owners, said the main central route of the Strait of Hormuz is still closed and has an estimated 80 mines that need to be cleared. But ships have been passing through the smaller northern route, which goes through Iranian waters, and the southern route, which goes through Omani waters.“Those two routes now seem to be fully open,” Belcher said.LLoyd’s list estimates 550 merchant ships will need to prepare to exit the gulf, including 160 tankers, 200 bulk carriers, 60 container ships and 10 vehicle carriers. Trump Warns U.S. Will No Longer Protect G7 From Threat Of Jigsaw
ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, FRANCE—Claiming their failure to help America would now leave the nations incredibly vulnerable to the danger of shotgun carousels, President Donald Trump warned the G7 summit this week that the U.S. will no longer protect them from the threat of the serial killer Jigsaw. “We asked you all for support, and you didn’t listen, so when you find yourself with a reverse bear trap on your face and a red countdown timer ticking down, don’t you dare call America, because we won’t help you,” said Trump, cautioning foreign allies that he would no longer authorize any preventive ordinances to prevent John Kramer from kidnapping them and forcing them to cut the key to their shackles out from their own skin. “I’m sure you’d love our very powerful military to come bail you out, but you’re all going to have to handle that tricycle-riding puppet by yourself. Believe me, Jigsaw will put your countries through a lot of little games. Everyone in the G7 better start practicing crawling around in barbed wire, because thanks to your inaction, that’s where your countries will be in the near future. I know you think that Jigsaw is dead, but he just wants you to think that.” At press time, Trump had reportedly bragged to G7 leaders that he was in talks to broker a peace deal between the U.S. and Freddy Krueger. Alabama to reportedly face Big Ten program in neutral site series
According to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, Alabama will reportedly begin a two-year neutral site series this upcoming season against a Big Ten program, the Iowa Hawkeyes. The first matchup between the two will take place from inside Casey's Center in Des Moines, Iowa, with the rematch coming in Mobile, Alabama during the 2027-28 season. Ex-England star weighs in on FIFA Hydration Breaks following Alexi Lalas backing
Hydration breaks have proved controversial during the FIFA World Cup -Credit:Eddie Keogh - The FA, The FA via Getty ImagesFormer England defender Wayne Bridge has weighed in on FIFA's contentious hydration breaks, just days after ex-U.S. Men's National Team star Alexi Lalas declared he had no issue with them. The World Cup is now in full swing, with Bridge likely thrilled after watching England kick off its campaign in Dallas with a commanding 4-2 victory over Croatia. Wednesday's action also brought embarrassment for Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, who were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo.Among the most hotly debated topics surrounding the tournament has been FIFA's implementation of hydration breaks, with stoppages scheduled at the 22nd minute of both halves, effectively transforming a 90-minute soccer match into a four-quarter contest, via The Mirror US.Cristiano Ronaldo struggles as Portugal tie with DR Congo in World Cup openerFIFA World Cup referee under investigation for alleged 'white supremacy' gesture -Credit:Alex Livesey, Getty ImagesThe breaks have drawn sharp criticism from soccer fans, who argue the interruptions can derail a team's momentum, giving opponents the opportunity to regroup after sustained pressure.Furthermore, some fans have suggested FIFA's hydration breaks are less about protecting players from the intense heat and more about creating additional TV commercial opportunities.Several World Cup venues are domed and air-conditioned, making hydration breaks arguably unnecessary. Nevertheless, earlier this week, Lalas stated he had no objections to the stoppages, noting they "benefits players and advertisers."Posting on X, Lalas wrote: "I have no problem with hydration breaks. It benefits players and advertisers."Win/win. Yes, it changes how you play/coach/watch, but so did substitutions, 3 pts for win, VAR, etc. Evolve and adapt. There will be a generation whose version of the beautiful game includes quarters."To listen to the latest episode of 'All Out Soccer' - CLICK HEREYet not everyone is on board with the hydration breaks. Wayne Bridge, who represented the Three Lions at two World Cups (2002 and 2006), has reservations about their introduction. The former Chelsea and Manchester City fullback acknowledges the heat-related reasoning behind the breaks, but warns they could give certain sides an advantage by disrupting the natural rhythm of games.Speaking exclusively via Freebets.com, Bridge told Mirror U.S. Sports: "I think it's obviously for the welfare of the players because of the heat mainly."As a fan, you probably just want to get on with the game. As a player, I used to always hate having half-time - you're on a roll, you're going, then all of a sudden you're sat down for 10-15 minutes, and you've got to get going again. If you're in the game, I'd rather it just keeps flowing. Unless it's going really bad and you need to sort something out."I like the game to flow. Will it suit some teams? It'll probably suit the teams that are really in control of the game, that are comfortable passing it around and keeping possession. In terms of the sport itself, I'd rather not have it. I think fans wouldn't, and as a player I just want to get on and play the game."

Will Lamine Yamal start against Saudi Arabia? Spain think Barcelona star ready to play 45 minutes
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 15: Lamine Yamal of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Cabo Verde at Atlanta Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is reportedly pondering starting Barcelona star Lamine Yamal against Saudi Arabia on Sunday at World Cup 2026.Yamal came off the bench for 17 minutes in Spain’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in their opener but did look lively on his return from injury.According to Cope, the chances of Yamal starting against Saudi Arabia are “increasing” as Spain’s medical staff believe he is able to play 45 minutes. However, there is a risk of relapse which means Spain must be very careful with the teenager.Spain are also thinking about starting Yamal because De la Fuente is expected to make changes to his team after an underwhelming start to the tournament.Dani Olmo and Alex Baena are also options to come into the starting XI, with Gavi potentially dropping out.De la Fuente has said previously that Yamal is in “perfect shape” but Barcelona certainly won’t want to see the national team take any risks at all with the forward.

‘Mr. Waianae’ established a culture that made the community proud
Decades after their football careers ended, former players still are following the lessons from “Mr. Waianae.”Larry Ginoza, one of the most successful coaches in Hawaii high school football history, died this past Saturday. He was 89.As Waianae High School’s head coach for 20 seasons through 1984, Ginoza won 189 games, third most on Oahu behind Cal Lee and Wendell Look. The Seariders won four Oahu Prep Bowls, including the inaugural championship in 1973, and nine OIA titles.“Everyone knew how good he was as a coach,” said Kurt Gouveia, who had a dual role as quarterback and free safety for the Seasiders. “But he also was a great man. The man’s going to be missed a lot. He was stern but fair. He understood we were teenagers and we were going to make mistakes. But he taught us how to work hard and learn from our mistakes. And he was important to our community. He was Mr. Waianae.”Ginoza relied on a wishbone offense, attacking defense, and a code of conduct and style. The Seariders sat in silence on the bus rides to Honolulu Stadium or Aloha Stadium. The players wore black cleats and white socks.“If you score a touchdown, you give the ball to the referee,” former quarterback Michael Beazley said. “If the ref’s not around, you put the ball on the ground. You celebrate with your teammates on the sideline and you leave the other team alone. You don’t piss them off.”Win a game, shake hands with the opposing team. Lose a game, the Seariders congratulated the victors.“But,” Beazley said, “we didn’t experience too many losses.”With every successful season, the next generation hungered for its turn.“When we were in elementary school, we all wanted to play for Waianae,” former lineman Tom Tuinei said. “We all wanted to be Levi Stanley and Tui Ala. They were the guys who came before us. They showed us the way.”Entering his freshman year, Tuinei said the focus was to earn playing time. Ginoza offered a long-range plan.“In actuality, he was setting us up for later in life,” Tuinei said. “He taught us to be humble. When things go hard, you have to keep pushing. He built up your character. I was in trouble, but you push through, and that becomes part of your character. Work hard, try your best, don’t give up. He really cared for the young men of Waianae. He taught us well. He was so good at saying a lot in a little.”And Ginoza made sure his players did their best in all areas. Deficient grades kept players in study hall instead of practice.“If you don’t practice, you don’t play,” Beazley said. “You’ve got to get it right in the classroom. Coach said there’s no way you can be a good teammate and be productive if you’re a knucklehead in the classroom. By the time (a player joins the team), you know what to expect.”Back in the 1960s, there was a hardscrabble side to Waianae.“One way in, one way out,” former All-State safety Nathan Palakiko Fletcher said. But from his first Waianae season in 1965, Ginoza established a culture that would illuminate the best of the Leeward community.“We got more than football from him,” Beazley said. “The whole community was winning when football was winning. The school was winning.”More than 100 players showed up for training camp. Ginoza was pained to make cuts, believing that after-school energy was best spent in a structured activity.Ginoza also tried to make sure the roster was composed of 96792 residents.“There was no recruiting,” Beazley said. “You just take in the backyard guys and put it together. We were just kids playing and enjoying football and loving it.”Ginoza’s program did not go unnoticed. The top OIA coaches at the time — Leilehua’s Hugh Yoshida, Kaiser’s Ron Lee, Radford’s John Velasco, and Castle’s Don Mahi — bonded with Ginoza. Despite Kaiser and Waianae being rivals — they met three years in a row in the OIA title game — Lee borrowed Ginoza’s pre-game routine.“I really watched how Larry coached,” Lee said. “I learned a lot on how he ran his program. Larry was way ahead of his time. The discipline, the preparation. We tried to simulate his style.”The Seariders might have been the original social influencers. As Beazley related, “I have good friends from Waimanalo tell me, ‘Mike, they used to pack us up and take us to Waianae football games. They loved the brand.’ And they didn’t even know anybody in Waianae at the time.”Beazley added: “It was special to be on that team. When you go around outside Waianae, you can’t wait to meet new people. You’re waiting for people to ask you: ‘where are you guys from?’ We were proud to be from Waianae. It’s like that cheer: ‘We’re from Waianae, everywhere we go, people want to know, who we are, so we tell them …’ Those were special times. Coach G was a special coach.”Retired sports editor Clyde Mizumoto had a front-row view of Ginoza in the 1970s.“Beneath that gruff, and somewhat intimidating exterior, was a warm and welcoming man,” Mizumoto recalled. “I was warned by a veteran sports staffer before going to a practice for a summer all-star game in 1974. ‘Good luck trying to get anything out of him.’ I was somewhat anxious as this was my first assignment as a part-time staffer for the Advertiser.“I introduced myself, and Coach patted the stands next to him indicating to sit. And we talked, while he offered comments on the players. It was the beginning of a great relationship with this coaching legend. I once asked Coach how he was able to motivate the players — making sure they stayed out of trouble, did well in the classroom, played hard on the field. He had a simple answer: “We (coaches) have what they really want … and that’s to play football for Waianae. That’s plenty (motivation).”Hawaii Prep WorldFor high school sports record books, visit .

Acceptance of gay people improved a lot in the 2010s, but it’s stagnating in the 2020s. Why?
Gallup Poll released global survey data on the state of gay and lesbian rights, and it’s pretty clear that we’re now in the midst of not just a national stagnation, but a global one that is affecting the lives of tens of millions of LGBTQ+ people. Gallup has been asking people around the world, “Is the city or area where you live a good place or not a good place to live for gay or lesbian people?” since 2006, meaning they now have 20 years of data to look at. This roughly follows my career in LGBTQ+ media, by the way: I got my first job writing for a queer website in February 2007. Related This anti-trans law didn’t need to pass to shut down classroom discussions Currently, 40% of people say their area is a good place, while 44% say it’s not. This is a significant improvement over the 23% who said that their area was a good place in 2006 and the 53% who said it was not. | Gallup Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today To be clear, this question isn’t an exact statistic measuring how many queer people are safe worldwide. First, mostly cishet people were surveyed because they’re just the vast majority of the population, and they are the people who are least likely to know what conditions LGBTQ+ people are living under. Second, the question focused just on “gay or lesbian people,” which excludes a large part of the community, although it’s unclear how aware straight people would be of that fact. Last, it’s not clear what “a good place” even means in this context. Obviously, it doesn’t mean “gay and lesbian people are treated just as well or better than straight people” since that’s true nowhere in the world. So, at best, the question is asking if the discrimination and oppression queer people face in one’s locality is somewhat less than what queer people face elsewhere, based on the respondents’ imagination of what it’s like to be queer wherever they live, compared to, say, Russia or the U.S. More likely, though, respondents were just answering based on whether they personally are OK with having gay people in their area. So this poll can offer some insight into broad trends, but don’t take it too literally. Gallup showed poll results separated by countries that have legalized marriage equality and those that haven’t. The countries that legalized it saw a significant increase in the percentage of people saying their locality is a “good place” from 2006 to 2015 (39% to 73%), while the remaining countries saw some growth in the period after that (16% to 26%). Most countries and regions that legalized same-sex marriage by the mid-2010s, with the U.S. legalizing it nationwide in 2015. | Gallup It’s also notable that Gallup is not legally allowed to ask this question in some countries. Several countries banned either homosexuality or “LGBTQ+ propaganda” in the 2020s or increased the penalties for it, which means that the stagnation is likely worse than what is seen here. Also, the 2020 results are likely skewed because COVID prevented Gallup from conducting in-person interviews and from surveying certain countries altogether. Broken down by country, legalizing same-sex marriage was correlated with an increase in positive attitudes towards gay and lesbian people in the three years before and after legalization. Because the increases came both before and after marriage was legalized, it’s less that public opinion caused or was caused by marriage being legalized and more that, as public opinion moved in our favor, societies became more aware of how denying a basic right to a historically oppressed minority for no reason other than their identity is a bad thing and also that governments recognizing equal rights for queer people in a highly visible way shifted some people’s attitudes as well. These things are coproductive. | Gallup But this all comes back to the question of the stagnation seen since around 2020 and why that happened. One reason could be that there was just always going to be stagnation in attitudes towards gay people after marriage was legalized. In the 2000s, a lot of LGBTQ+ people saw marriage rights as either unachievable or at least a very difficult fight, more difficult than, say, getting anti-discrimination protections would have been. But here we are in the U.S. in 2026 with over 10 years of marriage equality and no law from Congress banning anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, with the latter unlikely to happen any time soon (the president has long been opposed to such legislation). Marriage was not the hardest thing to get; it was actually one of the easier things because it places very few demands on individuals who are not queer themselves. It was a right that was denied to a discrete population that doesn’t affect pretty much anyone outside of that population, other than people acknowledging that it happened. It was also a large and visible sign of acceptance of queer people. But by 2019-ish – the year that Austria, Taiwan, and most of Mexico legalized it – it had already happened in most places where it was going to happen any time soon, which meant that fewer people after that saw evidence of conditions improving for gay people. A second factor is the global movement against trans rights, which really gained speed in the U.S. in 2021 when red states started banning gender-affirming care and sports participation after previously not caring about those issues. In the U.K., the Tavistock and Forstater cases (in 2020 and 2021, respectively) drew significant media attention to anti-trans attitudes (J.K. Rowling famously came out as a TERF in response to the Forstater case). The U.S. and the U.K. remain highly culturally influential worldwide, in part due to the size of their economies and in part because English is the lingua franca, giving native English speakers an advantage in international discussions. The rise in fascist attitudes is global. They’re sharing ideas online. So it’s unlikely that increasingly negative attitudes towards trans people would remain confined to the U.S. and the U.K., or would only target trans people and not the larger LGBTQ+ population. Last, the world has changed drastically since 2020, and not just with respect to LGBTQ+ rights. The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound effect on how people see each other, and time spent on social media increased significantly throughout the 2010s. Passive social media that feeds users content, like TikTok and Instagram Reels, grew in popularity in the 2020s, and outrage and negativity are rewarded on such platforms because they drive engagement. Meanwhile, other social media networks like Facebook and X – the latter of which still rules a lot of professional journalists’ worlds – turned to the right. This list isn’t exhaustive. It’s just some observations from a news junkie who has been following these things for two decades. But it’s something to consider as we enter the next decade in this global story. Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester to have season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester will undergo season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome and is expected to be sidelined for eight to 10 months.Thoracic outlet syndrome is a disorder that occurs when blood vessels or nerves in the space between the collarbone and first rib are compressed. That can lead to neck and shoulder pain, numbness or tingling in the fingers, and arm weakness.Priester's thoracic outlet decompression surgery will be performed on Monday in Dallas by surgeon Dr. Gregory Pearl and will involve the removal of the first upper rib on the right side.Priester said he hopes to compete for a rotation spot next spring.“After doing all the things that we had gone through to try and fix this problem without surgery, we’ve just kind of gotten to a point where these things aren’t working, so we’re going to get surgery and make sure we clean this up and so that for the rest of my career this isn’t an issue,” Priester said before the Brewers game against Cleveland on Thursday. The Brewers called Priester back from his minor league rehabilitation assignment on June 12 to evaluate the next steps in his recovery.“I feel really confident that (I’m) going to come back even better,” Priester said.Priester was a key cog in the team’s rotation a season ago when he went 13-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 29 appearances, including 24 starts, for a team that made it to the National League Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Priester was expected to play a major role again this season in a rotation that so far has been led by hard-throwing Jacob Misiorowski and newcomer Kyle Harrison. Priester has not pitched in the majors this season.Priester said he wanted “to check every box” before deciding on surgery. The condition caused considerable control issues during the rehab stints, Priester said.In five rehab games at Triple-A Nashville, two in Arizona and one at High-A Wisconsin, Priester had a 15.75 ERA and 2.88 WHIP in 16 innings, with 24 walks, 18 strikeouts, four hit batters and six wild pitches.“When the brain and arm are communicating the right way because of the nerves that are pinching in there, it makes it nearly impossible to actually create a result that’s repeatable,” he said. “It was great that we had gotten the pain to go away with the nerve blocks, but essentially, we couldn’t alleviate all the symptoms.”Priester said the full recovery time for the surgery is expected to be eight to 10 months, but the 25-year-old is confident he can beat the timeline. “I’m still a pretty young guy that may be able to make that a little bit quicker, be diligent with the work and be ready to compete for a spot in spring training next year,” Priester said.Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler underwent a successful thoracic outlet decompression surgery in September 2025 and made an earlier-than-expected return. Wheeler made his debut this season on April 25 and has a 6-1 record with a 2.01 ERA.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Palestine FA does not endorse Republic of Ireland v Israel
The Republic of Ireland's home Nations League fixture with Israel has been moved to a neutral venue and behind closed doors [Getty Images]Palestine's Football Association (PFA) has said it does not endorse the Republic of Ireland's Nations League game with Israel being moved to a neutral venue. On Friday, it was confirmed by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) that the fixture would be played away from the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on 4 October after Uefa granted approval for the game to be played behind closed doors at a neutral venue.Pressure to boycott the fixture has built as protests took place outside the Dáil (Irish parliament), while May's friendly with Qatar was twice disrupted when tennis balls featuring the Palestine flag were thrown onto the pitch. A 'Stop the Game' campaign has also been launched by the group Irish Sport for Palestine. When confirming the game had been moved to a neutral venue, the FAI quoted a statement from the Palestine FA saying that it "affirms its respect for the decision" made by the FAI to move the game to a neutral venue."The Palestinian Football Association expresses its appreciation for the principled positions taken by the Football Association of Ireland in support of the rights of the Palestinian people and Palestinian athletes," the FAI quoted the Palestine FA as saying."The Palestinian Football Association also affirms its respect for the decision made by the Football Association of Ireland within the framework of its sporting and international obligations, in a manner that enables it to continue fulfilling its noble mission of serving football and promoting the values of justice, solidarity, and mutual respect." However, the Palestine FA said on Thursday that it "wished to clarify" that it has not issued any statement "endorsing, approving or supporting the decision to proceed with the match"."Any interpretation suggesting the PFA has given its blessing to the fixture does not accurately reflect our position," it said.Republic of Ireland v Israel to be played at neutral venueDespite having faced calls to boycott the games, the FAI insisted it will fulfil the fixtures as pulling out of the matches would have "a profound impact on the whole of Irish football".It said the result of not fulfilling the games would be the forfeiture of six points which could lead to relegation to League C in the Nations League and an impact on the team's Uefa and Fifa rankings, highlighting "the converse of these impacts would apply to Israel", increasing their chances of Nations League promotion and Euro 2028 qualification. In Thursday's statement, the Palestine FA added it had "long-standing principle" of respecting that each association can make its own decisions, but reiterated it does not endorse the game being played and said "our position regarding Israeli football remains unchanged and unequivocal"."While the PFA respects the right of every association to determine how it navigates its own sporting, legal, and regulatory obligations, such respect should not be misconstrued as endorsement of any particular decision," it added. In a Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 about 1200 people were killed and 251 abducted to Gaza.More than 70,600 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then, according to the Hamas-run health ministry - with more than 1,000 Palestinians reported killed in the West Bank. The Palestine FA said it "continues to pursue accountability through Fifa and other international sporting bodies for Israel's persistent violations of Fifa statutes", stating that athletes had been killed in the conflict and sporting infrastructure had also been destroyed, as well as the "devastating impact of Israel's war on all aspects of Palestinian life".It added: "The PFA rejects any characterisation that could be interpreted as providing political or moral cover for Israel's continued participation in international football while these grave violations persist. "The PFA would not, and will not, be party to any effort that normalises these realities or contributes to the sportswashing of crimes committed against the Palestinian people."Israel and the Republic of Ireland are also scheduled to meet at a neutral venue for Israel's home Group B3 match on 27 September. The Football Association of Ireland has been contacted for comment.

College sports wants Congress’ help. Why Indiana Sen. Todd Young voted against bill
The Protect College Sports Act, legislation meant to introduce and codify sweeping reforms related to college athletics, passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee on Thursday morning. It now heads to the Senate floor. The bill passed out of committee by a 19-9 vote. Indiana Republican Sen. Todd Young voted no, his decision reflecting Big Ten concerns over the bill.A spokesman for Sen. Young told IndyStar, “Senator Young hopes that additional changes can be made to the bill to address concerns raised by the Big Ten.”Co-sponsored by Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Washington), the Protect College Sports Act represents Congress’ most substantial success so far in a yearslong effort to bring legislative reform to college athletics. Since before the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders in college sports — including the NCAA, member conferences and schools, and other major players — have lobbied for national solutions to what have become state and regional problems.Several pieces of legislation have been introduced across the last several years, only to fizzle long before reaching the floor of either chamber. The SCORE Act, introduced last year in the House of Representatives, gained some traction and passed out of committee, but was never brought to the floor.Which makes Thursday’s news meaningful. Moving the Protect College Sports Act to the Senate floor, while not a guarantee of any outcome, potentially takes the bill past a threshold no other such piece of reformative legislation has yet been able to cross.Cruz told Yahoo! Sports’ Ross Dellenger on Thursday that Cruz believes Sen. Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) is committed to introducing the bill to the Senate floor soon. The bill provides a legal framework for a host of potential reforms and protections for college sports. It grants limited antitrust protection to the NCAA, places limits on certain things including potential conference realignment, builds safeguards meant to protect non-revenue and Olympic sports, addresses potential broadcast rights reforms, and more.It enjoys significant backing, and not just among leaders in college sports. This week, the NFL, its players’ association, the National Basketball Players Association and Major League Baseball all voiced their support for the bill. Two key constituencies not in lockstep on the bill voiced their own concerns Thursday. In a joint statement issued just after 10 a.m. Thursday, the Big Ten and SEC — far and away the two most powerful conferences and arguably two greatest power centers, full stop, in college athletics — suggested they still hold significant reservations over the bill.“From the outset, we identified a set of essential revisions to the PCSA necessary for the long-term sustainability of college athletics,” the statement read. “We have worked with both majority and minority staff to advance those revisions, which focus on better supporting student-athletes and stabilizing the college sports environment. We continue to believe revisions are needed to secure our support for the bill.“Despite our sustained engagement and good faith efforts, these critical revisions have not been accepted.”The statement went on to note the “several Commerce Committee members that share our concerns and support these recommendations.”Young is one of several members of the committee representing a Big Ten state, including one of three Republicans. He is the only Republican member of the committee whose state contains multiple schools in the conference.Allowing for those reservations, Thursday’s news is still significant. It marks the first time a bipartisan bill on the subject has reached this point in the Senate and, should it be brought to the floor, it would be the first such legislation to reach that stage, in either chamber. The bill could be brought to the Senate floor as early as July, though that timeline remains fluid. This article originally appeared on Indianapolis Star: Protect College Sports Act vote: Why Indiana’s Todd Young voted in Big Ten favor

    Hearts buy Fagan-Walcott from York
[Getty Images]Hearts have signed former Dundee and Dunfermline Athletic defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott from York City for an undisclosed fee.The 24-year-old, who has agreed a four-year contract, was at the time Tottenham Hotspur's youngest-ever player when he made his debut in the Champions League round of 16 defeat by RB Leipzig in 2020.But last season he helped York win the National League title, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in 37 appearances.Overall, Fagan-Walcott has scored 14 times in 79 games for the club he joined nearly two years ago from Cardiff City. The London-born defender first arrived in Scotland on loan to Dundee from Spurs in 2021, but his time at Dens Park was cut short by injury after just two games. He joined Cardiff on his release by Spurs but only made one start and two substitute appearances and was sold to York after a successful six-month loan spell. Before then, Fagan-Walcott had also had a loan spell with Dunfermline, making 15 appearances and scoring three goals in the latter half of 2023-24 season for the Championship club.He becomes Hearts' fifth signing of the summer and comes the day after head coach Derek McInnes left to join Rangers.

George Watts, former Tennessee cross country, track coach, retires from ETSU
George Watts announced his retirement as East Tennessee State's director of track and field and cross country on June 18 after a career that included 26 years coaching at Tennessee and four competing for the Vols in the late 1970s.Watts spent the last 14 years at ETSU and will continue working there in a part-time role as a distance coach."You can't have a program without surrounding yourself with talented, hard-working coaches. I feel very lucky to have had some great staff who came ready to work every day," Watts said in a school release. "I'm most proud of the student-athletes for the effort they put in every day. You don't always know when the next great one is going to come along, but quite often it's just as exciting to see that person who scores for the first time in their career, or unexpectedly wins an event on their last throw. Those are the moments that make coaching so enjoyable."Watts was a runner at Tennessee before becoming a coach, winning four SEC championships and earning all-American honors for cross country in 1977 and for the indoor three-mile run in 1978.He started his coaching career in 1985 as an assistant for men's cross country and track. He was promoted in 1992 to head coach of men's cross country and assistant head coach of men's track. In 2009, he added associate head coach for women's track to his responsibilities.Watts oversaw NCAA outdoor titles for the men's track in 1991 and 2001 as well as the program's only NCAA indoor national championship in 2002. His teams won 11 SEC titles during his tenure, racking up 42 All-American honors. At ETSU, Watts coached one men's track all-American and one women's indoor all-American."George has had an impact on so many young people's lives as a coach, especially when it comes to records and athletic achievements, but more importantly, he has had an incredible personal impact on the people within his program and our department," ETSU athletic director Richard Sander said.Emmett Siegel covers Tennessee baseball for Knox News. Pirates Mocked To Select High School Shortstop In MLB Draft
Pirates Mocked To Select High School Shortstop In MLB Draft originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Pittsburgh Pirates have the fifth overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft and could look to add an impact prospect to the system.Pittsburgh could go in a variety of different directions, whether it’s pitching or a hitter, or from college or high school. The Pirates have been linked to plenty of different prospects, but ESPN MLB analyst Kiley McDaniel shared his latest mock draft and had the Pirates selecting Jacob Lombard a high school shortstop from Gulliver Prep in Florida.“The Pirates are a lower-payroll team with playoff aspirations, but the college players available aren't talented enough to move them off the best talent,” McDaniel wrote in an article published on Thursday. “In addition, I would only give Lombard to a team with a history of picking and developing players who will need a contact improvement and/or swing tweaks. Konnor Griffin is a nice recent example. Lombard's profile is similar to that of 2025 No. 4 overall pick Ethan Holliday at the same stage, but with even more athleticism/upside.”Lombard would add a high-end infielder to the system, who likely would take a couple of years to reach the majors. At Gulliver Prep in the 2025-26 season, he hit .477 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs in 117 plate appearances, as the contact skills are there, while he’s also a solid fielder. The 2026 MLB Draft is set for July 11-13 in Philadelphia.More MLB: Pirates' Paul Skenes Tumbles In Latest Pitcher Power Rankings

Fox host makes bizarre comment about Hillary Clinton being “a female”
Inflammatory Fox host Jesse Watters spoke on The Five about how the only reason Hillary Clinton will be remembered in history is because she’s “a female.” “These are the times to be alive. Historians will look back in 100 years. They’re not gonna look at the fake news stuff… They’re gonna see the big stuff, the world-defining moments, the rewiring of world trade, crime, the economy, the border, what we’re doing internationally… Hillary Clinton is going to be a footnote, and it’s just ’cause she’s a female.” Related Conservatives freak out over cheerful message from gay/straight alliance teens His fellow panelists did not agree, but Watters doubled down. “It’s true! What has she done? She’s just a female, that’s it. A female that does what men do.” Democrat Jessica Tarlov, who often appears on the show, mentioned Clinton’s roles as First Lady, a U.S. Senator, and Secretary of State. “That’s just a job… She did a terrible job. Just like many men have done terrible jobs at those same jobs.” Tarlov replied, “Rarely do I say this is beneath you, but it’s actually beneath you.” “You’d be surprised,” Watters retorted. The rest of the panelists laughed as Tarlov appeared horrified. Watters: Hillary Clinton is going to be a footnote. It's just because she's a female. What has she done? She’s just a female. NHL clears Mike Babcock to coach the Oilers after review of his Columbus tenure
NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL said Thursday it completed a review of Mike Babcock’s tenure in Columbus, cleared him to coach the Edmonton Oilers if they opt to hire him. The league launched an investigation at the request of the NHL Players’ Association in light of the Edmonton Oilers’ interest in hiring Babcock. The league in a statement said even in the least favorable light, there was no basis to restrict Babcock’s employment. It was not immediately clear if or when the Oilers would name Babcock coach. They have been looking for a replacement since firing Kris Knoblauch following a first-round playoff exit that came after back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Final.A message sent to union representatives was not immediately returned.Babcock, 63, has not coached in the NHL since 2019, when he was fired by Toronto 23 games into his fifth season in charge. The Blue Jackets hired him on July 1, 2023, and Babcock resigned in September after his requests for personal photos from players in an attempt to get to know them drew criticism as an invasion of privacy. The NHL dropped its planned investigation at the time because Babcock stepped down. It got underway this week after the final endedBabcock coached Detroit to the Stanley Cup in 2008 and has made two other trips to the final, along with guiding Canada to Olympic gold medals in 2010 and ’14.___AP NHL: https://apnews.com/NHL

Ex-Red Sox Pitcher To Undergo Season-Ending Suregry
Ex-Red Sox Pitcher To Undergo Season-Ending Suregry originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Boston Red Sox traded Quinn Priester to the Milwaukee Brewers last season, and he ended up being a dominant arm for them. However, his season is over this year, before he made a single start. The Red Sox originally acquired Priester from the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he pitched in just one big league game for them. He had a 5.40 ERA for the WooSox in 2024 after the trade. He made one start for the WooSox last season before he was dealt to the Brewers. For the Brewers, he had a 3.32 ERA in 29 games and was one of the best starters on the team. The Brewers won 21 of the 29 games he pitched in, and he was expected to be a key member of their rotation this year. However, he had been dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome symptoms since spring training and started the year on the injured list. After trying everything, Priester will undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery on Monday, per himself via MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. It is expected to take him eight to ten months to get back to 100%, but he is confident that he will be back by next season, and he will come back even better.Priester noted that the team tried everything to get him back on the mound this season, trying to avoid surgery. They were able to relieve some of the pain he was having, but he was unable to command the baseball like he did last season. The Brewers are once again one of the best teams in baseball, but will have to finish this season without Priester. While Prister is out, another ex-Red Sox arm is dominating for Milwaukee. Kyle Harrison has pitched like an All-Star this season, and he, Priester and Jacob Misiorowski could be a dominant trio next season.More MLB: Red Sox's Chad Tracy Shoots Down 'Radical' Change Despite Offensive Woes

2027 5-star LB commits to Texas A&M over Notre Dame, LSU
Texas A&M's pursuit of 2027 five-star linebacker Kaden Henderson came down to the final moments, as Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman made things interesting, even receiving a prediction to land with the Fighting Irish just days before his commitment announcement. On Thursday, Henderson officially announced that he will commit to Texas A&M on the Pat McAfee Show.Throughout his recruiting process, Henderson's strong relationship with coach Mike Elko and new linebackers coach Travis Williams sealed the deal for the blue-chip defender, who reportedly wants to play in the SEC. While the LSU Tigers were also in the mix, the Aggies' final pitch likely sealed the deal, especially from an NIL perspective, given his development track in Elko's defense.Trusting the recruiting experts, including AggieYell insider (subscription required) Joseph Hastings, Texas A&M should have been considered throughout the process, even after Notre Dame came into the picture. Quoting Hastings, the Aggies entered Wednesday as a slight favorite, and paried with fellow AggieYell recruiting expert Jackson Callaway, both analysts became even more confident less than 24 hours before Henderson's commitment. Joining three-star linebacker Aston Whiteside, Henderson is expected to sign with the Aggies in early December, and after landing four linebackers in the 2026 recruiting class, Texas A&M's future LB room is set in stone, outside of adding players from the transfer portal if needed. According to Rivals, Kaden Henderson is the 21st-ranked prospect in the 2026 class, the No. 1-ranked linebacker, and the No. 2-ranked prospect in Florida.BREAKING NEWS: @KadenHenderson_ is committing to Texas A&M #PMSLivepic.twitter.com/B1si85iweK— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) June 18, 2026Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Moise Kean: Club chief refuses to rule out sale of Man United striker target
Moise Kean: Club chief refuses to rule out sale of Man United striker target Manchester United may have been handed a massive boost in their bid to bring Italian striker Moise Kean back to the Premier League. While a striker is not a key transfer priority, it remains a position that United might look to address this summer. Whether Benjamin Sesko‘s deputy, Joshua Zirkzee, stays or leaves remains unclear, but there is a strong possibility he will depart after two successive failed attempts to engineer an exit.Should Zirkzee leave, he will need replacing, but who steps in?Given the position is not a pressing concern, active links to striker targets have been few. There have been rumours that experienced names such as Danny Welbeck and Robert Lewandowski could come in to serve as mentors for Sesko. There have also been some links to younger striker options such as Karl Etta Eyong and Moise Kean.Of those options, if Fiorentina’s Kean is the favoured choice should Zirkzee move on, United have now been handed a significant boost on that front.Moise Kean placed in the shop windowSpeaking to the media on Thursday, Fiorentina chief Fabio Paratici refused to rule out a potential Kean exit.On whether the striker stays or leaves, he said via Laviola:“As for Kean, he’s absolutely an asset to Italian football and Fiorentina. Everyone knows how fond I am of him; I’ve seen him grow from when he was 9 years old to the Champions League. I even sold him once under my management.“I’m fond of him, like all the players I’ve had. But we’re in a transfer window. We hope and want him to be our number nine. But not all football clubs are masters of their own destiny on the market, except the top five or six in the world. I think this is a sincere and realistic response for our fans.”Rather than pushing the narrative that Kean is untouchable, Paratici is clearly placing him in the shop window.Kean sale could be key to Fiorentina’s rebuildAfter a turbulent 2025-26 campaign that saw La Viola embroiled in a relegation battle, Fiorentina face a significant rebuild.Kean, whom former Italy striker Christian Vieri labelled a “phenomenal” striker, is among their most saleable assets, and a sale would go a long way towards funding that overhaul.Whether United move to capitalise remains to be seen.Yes, his stats last season were underwhelming; Kean only scored eight goals in 26 games, but his numbers in the 2024-25 campaign were brilliant: 19 goals in 32 appearances showed how deadly he can be. He can be a capable alternative to Sesko up top.INEOS attempted to sign him last summer and fell short. Now Fiorentina are offering them another chance to get the deal done.Featured image Timothy Rogers via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. ESPN NFL Analyst Urges AFC Team To Sign Ex-Patriots WR Stefon Diggs: 'Seems Like A No-Brainer'
ESPN NFL Analyst Urges AFC Team To Sign Ex-Patriots WR Stefon Diggs: 'Seems Like A No-Brainer' originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Free agent wide receiver and former New England Patriots pass-catcher Stefon Diggs has been linked to the Kansas City Chiefs numerous times this spring.ESPN NFL analyst Aaron Schatz urged a different AFC West team to sign Diggs in an article published Thursday though."Diggs was the dependable No. 1 target who helped the Bills' Josh Allen significantly improve. Then he was the dependable No. 1 target who helped the Patriots' Drake Maye significantly improve. So why wait for Fernando Mendoza's second season to get him a dependable No. 1 target who can help him significantly improve?" Schatz asked. "The Las Vegas receiver depth chart is severely lacking, and Diggs was still good enough to finish second among wideouts last season in ESPN Analytics' receiver score.
