Pochettino tells USA to ‘keep believing’ after progressing to World Cup knockouts
Pochettino tells USA to ‘keep believing’ after progressing to World Cup knockoutsMauricio Pochettino says his USA side and their supporters must “keep believing” after making it two wins from two games at the World Cup.The hosts beat Australia 2-0 in their second game of the tournament and have now confirmed their place in the knockout stages.“I think we need to keep believing and approach every single day like we did from day one,” USA boss Pochettino said after the game. “Believing that we can win. Knowing that we need to work really hard, building our journey every day to the next game.“It’s not changed much, my view or my dreams or what I am seeing. It’s much better when you show good performances and win the games. I think it makes everything easier. “But at the same time it’s to keep believing. Before we were talking after one game and three points. Now it’s two games, six points. Now we need to go for the next one and be sure that we are going to arrive in a good condition like we arrive in the last two games. “We need to work hard, be responsible, be disciplined, keep being very tough with ourselves to push to be better and better every day, not to be relaxed.“The IQ that I have in my players in the squad is so high above the average. That is why I know, with our help, because we as a coaching staff are very demanding, we are going to keep the same way.”

World Cup star becomes first player sent off under new ‘Vinicius Law’
World Cup star becomes first player sent off under new ‘Vinicius Law’Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior was in action for Brazil on Sunday, and he scored in a 3-0 victory over Haiti. It’s been a strong World Cup so far for the 25-year-old, who’s scored twice in two matches for the Selecao. However, it was not only because of his goal against Haiti that Vinicius’ name was in the headlines on Sunday morning. As per Diario AS, he was also mentioned after the first case of a player being sent off for covering their mouth whilst speaking to an opponent – a rule that was implemented by FIFA in the lead-up to the World Cup, known as the “Vinicius Law”.The player in question was Miguel Almiron, who was shown a straight red card following a VAR check after it was found that he covered his mouth to speak to one of the Türkiye players in stoppage time at the end of the first half.History of ‘Vinicius Law’Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty ImagesAlmiron is the first player to be shown a red card under these circumstances since the law was introduced. Earlier this year, FIFA confirmed that measures would be taken to avoid a repeat of the situation that occurred between Vinicius and Gianluca Prestianni, who covered his word when speaking to the Real Madrid man during the Champions League tie against Benfica.Vinicius accused Prestianni of hurling a racial insult in his direction, but given that the Argentine had covered his mouth, it was impossible to prove this. However, in the end he admitted to making an anti-gay insult, which landed him a six-match suspension. In the end, Almiron’s red card did not cost Paraguay, as they held on to seal an impressive 1-0 victory over Türkiye – a result that has confirmed that Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler will be heading home after the group stages are over, with his nation failing to qualify from Group D after back-to-back defeats.

Report – Al-Hilal Set Sights on Roma Star Duo
Report – Al-Hilal Set Sights on Roma Star DuoRoma could face a summer exodus despite returning to the Champions League after almost a decade of absence. According to Calciomercato, Gianluca Mancini and Lorenzo Pellegrini have found themselves on Al-Hilal’s list of targets.Paulo Dybala may not be the only big-name departure. Wanted by Juventus and Napoli, La Joya has yet to extend his contract at the Stadio Olimpico. Moreover, Roma have been reluctant to meet his salary demands, throwing his future in Italy’s capital into further doubt. In addition to Dybala, whose contract is due to expire in less than two weeks, Roma could part ways with long-serving midfielder Pellegrini. Indeed, the 30-year-old’s deal runs out at the end of June. Though contract renewal talks are ongoing, there’s no breakthrough on the horizon. As for Mancini, he has just over a year left to run on his contract. Formerly linked with a move to Inter, the Italian center-back could continue his career in the desert palace, with Simone Inzaghi keen to bring him to Riyadh. Our take on Roma stars & Saudi Pro League movePellegrini has lost his first-team status at Roma. Despite amassing 24 Serie A appearances last term, his influence has dwindled. Approaching the twilight of his career, the former Sassuolo man could favor a move to Saudi Arabia, as it could be his last chance to land a lucrative contract.Al-Hilal can offer him around €10 million net per season, a salary he cannot expect to get from Roma. The same applies to Mancini, though the Saudis would likely have to splash out around €25 million to convince the Giallorossi to sanction the transfer.

Could the Tennessee Titans go from worst to first in 2026?
The Tennessee Titans made headlines on Friday after signing Jeffery Simmons to a record-setting three-year $105.8 million extension. After the signing, Simmons talked about his belief in the new coaching staff and the organization, and how he hopes to help build the Titans into contenders. Eva Geitheim of Sports Illustrated looked at their chances of that happening sooner rather than later and gave the team a chance to go from worst to first in 2026.No. 4 - Tennessee Titans2025 record: 3–14Last division title: 2021It’s easy to imagine the Titans improving off two consecutive three-win seasons, but it’s difficult to see them snatching the division at this point. Cam Ward still has a long way to go in his development, and while that doesn’t necessarily stop teams from contending, there are still a lot of unproven elements on this Titans team. The Titans rank in the top four on this list because they are part of an AFC South division that has historically been weaker. With the Jaguars, Texans, and even Colts contending for a playoff berth last season, however, it might be harder than ever for the Titans to make the jump.Geitheim does hit on Cam Ward’s development as a significant factor, and that absolutely is, but also fails to mention the improvements on the defensive side of the ball. The Titans invested heavily on that side of the ball during the offseason and have the look of a unit with the potential to dominate, a factor that would help Ward and the offense tremendously as the season develops. When you couple the new-look defense with a schedule that sets up perfectly for a young team, there is a chance that Tennessee could surprise in 2026 and should not be overlooked. This article originally appeared on Titans Wire: Tennessee Titans: Could they go from worst to first in 2026?

NFL analyst compares Brendan Sorsby's skill set to Giants QB Jaxson Dart
Former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been at the center of attention across both the college football and NFL landscapes over the past week.Sorsby spent four seasons at the collegiate level, playing at Indiana and Cincinnati. He was projected to be one of the top players at his position in the 2026 NFL draft, but instead entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and signed with Texas Tech despite having the opportunity to turn pro.Sorsby officially joined the Red Raiders in January. The NCAA subsequently launched an investigation into potential sports bets he may have placed, including wagers on his own team during his time at Indiana. The quarterback allegedly wagered more than $90,000 across his four collegiate seasons. A court ultimately ruled him eligible to play for Texas Tech in 2026 after serving a two-game suspension, but Sorsby decided to part ways with the program and focus entirely on the NFL.Sorsby has entered the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft following his departure from Texas Tech. The New York Giants could emerge as a dark-horse candidate for the talented quarterback, as many observers note that Sorsby’s playing style resembles that of current Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart in several ways.Ted Nguyen of The Athletic recently highlighted the similarities and differences he sees between the two.Sorsby’s skill set reminds me a lot of Jaxson Dart’s, except Dart’s deep accuracy is much better. Both are tough, athletic option quarterbacks who prefer throwing outside. Dart came from a system that needed him to get through multiple progressions and stretched the field with downfield shots. Stylistically, they are similar, but Dart was the better prospect, didn’t have off-field issues and was a late first-round draft pick. Sorsby is a second-round, developmental pick, but his off-field issues will affect his stock.Sorsby could quickly make an impact in the NFL given his talent and athleticism. He was widely regarded as one of the top signal-callers in college football during his two seasons at Cincinnati, where he amassed 5,613 passing yards and 45 touchdowns.Despite the recent off-field drama, the former Cincinnati star is expected to receive a significant opportunity in the NFL. He is projected to be among the first players (if not the only player) selected in the NFL Supplemental Draft in July, and his playing style could continue to mirror Dart’s at the professional level. This article originally appeared on Giants Wire: NFL analyst compares Brendan Sorsby's skill set to Giants QB Jaxson Dart

Lazio Considering Sensational Swoop for Former Roma Attacker
Lazio Considering Sensational Swoop for Former Roma AttackerLazio are reportedly plotting a move for unsettled Udinese forward Nicolo Zaniolo, who burst to the scene as a Roma player.Nicolo Zaniolo: Career Path & Season StatsThe 26-year-old is a versatile attacker who developped his game at several Italian academies, including Genoa, Fiorentina, and Inter Milan, before joining Roma in 2018. The Massa native immediately established himself in a key role at the club, but his momentum was interrupted by back-to-back ACL injuries. Moreover, Zaniolo’s off-pitch antics made him a controversial figure in the Italian capital. The Giallorossi eventually sold him to Galatasaray in January 2023. After forgettable loan spells at Aston Villa, Atalanta, and Fiorentina, the second striker put his career back on track at Udinese this season, contributing with six goals and seven assists.Lazio Interested in ZanioloThe Zebrette thus opted to buy the player from Galatasaray for €5 million, but according to La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Fabiana Della Valle, his future in Udine remains uncertain. The Italian international was promised a salary raise from his current €1.2 million, but Udinese’s management have yet to fulfil it.Therefore, Zaniolo may try to push his way out of the Friulian club this summer, with Lazio emerging as his top suitor. As the source explains, Napoli had also enquired about the 26-year-old, but the Biancocelesti are considered the most interested admirers, as Gennaro Gattuso is a fan of the player. Why Zaniolo to Lazio Remains ComplicatedThe left-footed star is requesting a yearly salary of at least €2 million. However, Della Valle admits that the deal remains difficult, chiefly because Udinese would have to share the transfer fee with Galatasaray due to a 50% sell-on clause. The Zebrette’s asking price is believed to be €18-20 million, while Lazio are operating on a net-zero balance this summer, which should further complicat matters for the capital club. It should also be added that Zaniolo had personal issues in the past with Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni.

Bengals have lofty hopes for Myles Murphy in 2026
CINCINNATI, OHIO - JANUARY 4: Myles Murphy #99 of the Cincinnati Bengals takes the field prior to the game against the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium on January 4, 2026 in Cincinnati, United States. (Photo by Lauren Leigh Bacho/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Cincinnati Bengals made a number of moves this spring to bolster their defense, with the defensive line being the primary focus. Dexter Lawrence II, Jonathan Allen, and Boye Mafe were all added up front to deal with the rough-and-tumble AFC North. However, the club is also looking for big leaps from some other former high picks from recent Draft classes. Shemar Stewart needs to show more in year two, but the team is also holding high hopes for Myles Murphy. In speaking with the Bengals Booth podcast, hosted by Dan Hoard, defensive coordinator Al Golden is seeing the fourth-year pro making more steps this spring. “I think this year, we’re seeing another level of him this spring, and obviously, just continue that path,” Golden told Hoard. “And those plays (ones he left out there last year), he’s too talented. He’s too long; he’s too strong for those plays not to come if he continues this positive trend that he’s on right now.”After being drafted in the first round back in 2023, Murphy has waited his turn for a larger role. He has seen increased snaps towards the end of both 2024 and 2025, responding with four sacks in the final eight games last year.As for Murphy’s late-season surge in 2025, Golden weighed in on that, too, noting: “He knew exactly where his technique was, where he needed to be. He executed at a really high level in the plays that came.”The Bengals have a few players they would like to ink extensions with before the 2026 season begins. While DJ Turner, Dax Hill, Chase Brown, and others are on the list, so is Murphy. Because of some early-career inconsistencies, the team decided not to give him the fifth-year option, but it has been made known that they would like to keep him around long-term.While some believe the team should have exercised that option, there are reasons Cincinnati chose not to go that route. And, with a more active offseason than usual, Murphy is using 2026 as a “prove-it year” to the Bengals and the rest of the NFL ahead of 2027 free agency.Cincinnati’s defensive line was a beleaguered group last year, but it has suddenly become a crowded position group. Aside from the veterans that were added, Cincinnati also added Cashius Howell in the second round of the draft this year, and has some other young talents trying to make the roster. It’s a big year for Murphy—both in terms of aiding the Bengals’ defensive rebuild and in his career trajectory. If he proves Golden correct and continues to improve this year, it will be a big boost to the Cincinnati defensive unit.

Grant House no longer feels like an outcast after settlement in NIL lawsuit vs NCAA
INDIANAPOLIS — After years of feeling isolated on pool decks, Grant House said competing has become enjoyable again. The Bright, Indiana, native spent the past five years at the center of one of college sports' most consequential legal battles, but now says the conversations surrounding him have changed."It's definitely a lot more fun," House said after competing on Friday during the TYR Pro Swim Series at the Indiana University Natatorium. "It's a lot more enjoyable to go through and have two-way conversations and not just feel like outcasted or side eyes walking on the deck for like the last five years," he said.House served as the lead plaintiff in the House v. NCAA class action lawsuit, which resulted in a $2.8 billion settlement allowing Division I schools to directly share revenue with athletes. As schools adjusted to the changes, including new roster limits that reduced opportunities in sports like swimming, House became the target of criticism. Now, just more than a year after the settlement was approved, the former Arizona State swimmer said those conversations have shifted."It definitely feels like a more community sense," House said. "I think a lot of people have kind of understood after some time it wasn't my personal attack on things, but just something I was a part of and wanted to give more opportunities to athletes."Instead of reacting to headlines, House said more people have taken the time to understand why he became involved in the lawsuit."They're starting to have better conversations and more educated conversations as well," he said. "Not just reading headlines and understanding House as an actual person."That change has made traveling to meets and interacting with fellow swimmers, coaches and reporters feel different than it did during the lawsuit.House said one conversation this week especially stood out. A national team teammate spoke with him about the lawsuit, praising House for what he accomplished despite the adversity."'Cause now he can benefit from it," House said. "It's really neat to see that come full circle."While the shift didn’t happen overnight, conversations like the one with his teammate have shown him attitudes are beginning to change."It took longer than I expected," House said. "But I guess doing something for the first time ever in the history of the world takes a little bit of time, maybe longer than you think."Jessica Garcete is an IndyStar sports reporter. This article originally appeared on Indianapolis Star: House vs NCAA: Grant House enjoying competing again after NIL lawsuit

Pro Football Focus graded their top edge defenders from the 2025 NFL season, and Houston Texans star Will Anderson leads the pack with a grade of 93.1. Meanwhile, Denver Broncos edge Nik Bonitto ranks 15th with a 79.2 ranking, shared with Khalil Mack. PFF writer Ryan Smith detailed Bonitto’s growth and where he can improve: run defense.“Bonitto has improved his PFF overall grade in each year, from 52.4 as a rookie in 2022 to 79.2 this season," Smith wrote for PFF. "While there is still room to improve as a run defender, he’s established himself as one of the game’s best pass-rushers, generating 81 pressures and an 86.5 PFF pass-rush grade this season.”Will Bonitto leap out of the 70s and grade out in the 80s in 2026? If he takes Smith’s advice, there's a strong chance he can. The Broncos are looking to contend again in 2026 and behind, and they will need Bonitto if they want to get it done.Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! World Cup 2026: US assures itself a spot in knockout stages with win over Australia
The Americans are headed to the knockout stages.Friday’s 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle means the U.S. is advancing in the World Cup no matter what happens in Thursday’s game against Türkíye.Whether they advance as the top team from Group D or the No. 2 won’t be determined until very early Saturday morning or next week. But either way, they’ll still be standing when the tournament field shrinks to 32.The U.S. continued to turn pressure into own goals. Coach Riera names short Frankfurt term a big misunderstanding
Albert Riera has named his short stint as Eintracht Frankfurt coach a big misunderstanding and issued criticism on the club and the players.“We just weren’t meant for each other. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Spaniard Riera told Slovenian TV channel Sportklub.Riera was appointed as successor of Dino Toppmöller in early February but they parted ways after the season in which Frankfurt missed a European berth for the first time in six years by finishing eighth in the Bundesliga."I don't know if someone else would have done better, we will never find out," Riera said.He said he got on well with sporting director Marküs Krösche but that he wouldn't chose any Frankfurt player for his next project and that his previous Slovenian club Celje had more talent in this respect.Riera irritated with his brash personality and coaching decisions such as not nominating Mario Götze into match squads shortly before the 2014 World Cup winner had his contract renewed. He claimed in the interview that names were more important than results for the club and that he would have never managed to get the kind of players he would have wanted for the new season."Club policy stipulates that the coach has no say in scouting or team selection. That’s not the right environment for me, and I knew we couldn’t work together in the long term,” he said.Austrian Adi Hütter is the new coach in a return to Frankfurt, having already been in charge 2018-2021.

Oxford United sack head coach Bloomfield
Matt Bloomfield was appointed Oxford United head coach in January [Getty Images]Oxford United have sacked head coach Matt Bloomfield following their relegation to League One.The 42-year-old replaced Gary Rowett in January and despite some encouraging results and performances in the second half of the season, he was unable to keep them in the Championship.Oxford said Bloomfield had "represented Oxford United with professionalism and integrity"."We would like to thank Matt for his efforts and wish him every success in the future," a club statement added. "The process of appointing a new men's first team head coach will begin immediately, and the club will provide updates in due course."Oxford relegated after two years in ChampionshipBloomfield 'confident' of keeping Oxford jobOxford United appoint Bloomfield as new head coachBloomfield had been out of work since he was sacked as Luton boss in October 2025. He was appointed by Oxford at a time when they were 23rd in the Championship, three points adrift of safety, coming in after Rowett had overseen a dismal spell of one win in 10 matches.Bloomfield began his managerial career at Colchester United before taking over from Gareth Ainsworth at Wycombe Wanderers in 2023.After leading the Chairboys to the League One automatic promotion places amid the challenge of big-spending Birmingham City and Wrexham last season, he left to take over at Luton. But Bloomfield was unable to prevent the Hatters from suffering back-to-back relegations to the third tier and was dismissed after an underwhelming start to the season, with the club 11th in the table.Speaking after Oxford's relegation was confirmed in April, Bloomfield said he was confident of keeping his job."I've enjoyed my time at the club. It's obviously not been the outcome that we wanted for the season," he said."We've been pleasantly content with some of the improvements we have made but ultimately we wanted to stay in the league."I've not given much thought to my job and the bigger situation and ultimately, as a manager or head coach, all you can do is focus on being the best you can be."Oxford were relegated to League One in April after two seasons in the Championship [Getty Images]Oxford looked capable of pulling off a "great escape" in late February and early March when they won three games in a row to move up to 21st.However, just two wins in the following eight matches saw them lose ground on the sides above them.Relegation brought an end to a two-year spell in the second tier after they won promotion via the League One play-offs in 2023-24.Why now?Analysis - Jerome Sale, BBC Radio Oxford sports editorThis decision would not have been a surprise six weeks ago - just after Oxford's relegation to League One had been confirmed.Matt Bloomfield's arrival in January as successor to Gary Rowett didn't come with much fanfare and his impact was gradual not immediate. He experimented with different systems, and certain players didn't fit when he ultimately settled on one. Results did improve, but ultimately not by enough to beat the drop. The team just ran out of steam in the final days. But that still leaves the question: Why now, not then?Since the end of the season there's been a shift at the top of the club. Dusan Bogdanovic came in as chairman, an ex-pro player and agent, and whilst his experience in the English game is limited, there is every reason to expect him to want to be more hands on with the football side of the club than his predecessor. So far there hasn't been a single signing for next season, a situation which needs to change imminently. This was probably as late as they could leave a managerial change without the potential of recruiting for the wrong head coach. And finally on the timing, I can only assume they have a replacement in mind, perhaps their availability plays into this. They may have been relegated, but Oxford United remains a club with ambitions and one in a hurry. In the past month they have triggered mechanisms to expedite the judicial review process into their plans for a new stadium. They took a risk on Bloomfield being able to keep Oxford in the Championship, but as with Luton the previous year he narrowly failed. They have decided not to take a chance on him in League One.Sacking a head coach is the easy bit. As always when you change a manager, the real gamble and the real test comes with the appointment of the next guy.Latest Oxford United news, analysis and fan viewsListen to Oxford United content on BBC Sounds

Jose Mourinho giftwraps ideal €100m midfielder for Liverpool
Jose Mourinho giftwraps ideal €100m midfielder for LiverpoolBig changes are coming to Liverpool’s midfield this summer. We could see Alexis Mac Allister move on for example - with the Argentina World Cup winner only under contract until 2028. No talks currently exist over a new deal and without an agreement the 27-year-old’s transfer value is going to head south. In a similar boat - and with an even shorter contract duration - is Curtis Jones. Out of contract in 2027 - and with no new deal on the horizon - the England international is set to be sold to Inter Milan. That would open the door for Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola to enter the market for a high-quality midfield replacement.Tchouameni has got no guarantees at Real MadridAnd according to a new report in TEAMtalk developments at Real Madrid could giftwrap a long-term target for Liverpool.Aurelien Tchouameni, 26, has been with Los Blancos since 2022 - when he turned down a move to Anfield in favour of the Bernabeu.Having won two Champions League titles the time has come for the France international to leave.Liverpool and Manchester United on alertMadrid have informed the midfielder that his long-term prospects at the Spanish capital club are in doubt - with Liverpool and Manchester United now reported to be on alert. It’s claimed that the Reds and their North West rivals have been in contact with Tchouameni’s camp ahead of the window opening.Tchouameni is seen inside Anfield as an immediate upgrade - with complications arising in the chases for domestic targets likes Alex Scott and Adam Wharton. No space at the Bernabeu for TchouameniMadrid have completed the signing of Bernardo Silva from Manchester City and look set to land Enzo Fernandez on a big-money deal from Chelsea. Chases are also live for Mateus Fernandes and Rodri. That would squeeze Tchouameni ever further down the pecking order under the incoming head coach. With so many new players coming to the club sales will be necessary and in that context Tchouameni fits the bill.Tchouameni has two years left on his deal with Madrid valuing their player at around €100m. That is a lot to ask but for that money Liverpool know they would be signing one of the very best midfielders around with a proven pedigree.

USC football opposing player scouting report - Kendre Harrison, Oregon
USC football's most consequential game of 2026 is the Oregon game. ESPN looked at the tight end who will challenge USC's defense: Kendre' Harrison."Oregon lost a key player at tight end in Kenyon Sadiq, who was selected No. 16 in the NFL draft. Though returning tight end Jamari Johnson provides stability after tallying 510 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 2025, Oregon also added the five-star Harrison, the No. 15 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class. Harrison, a two-sport star, gives the Ducks another high-upside and highly athletic option at a position of need entering the season."A dual-sport athlete and ranked basketball prospect, Harrison brings a rare blend of size and athleticism. Even as an early enrollee, he stood out physically at Oregon's spring game. On tape, he is a long strider who is deceptively fast for his size. He can high point the football effectively and create production after the catch. Though still developing and needing to adjust to the physicality of the college level, he projects as a major red zone option who can box out defenders on jump balls as if he is back on the hardwood."USC's defense has been outflanked when it has played Oregon in recent years. The Trojans have not been able to hold the Ducks under 30 points. If USC can hit that benchmark, the Trojans would have a significantly better chance of winning a game they frankly cannot afford to lose. If USC wants to take a significant step forward as a program, it must beat Oregon. Beating Oregon includes containing Kendre' Harrison when these teams clash. This article originally appeared on Trojans Wire: Oregon football's Kendre Harrison will force USC to be airtight on D

🤨 Changes on the cards? Scaloni could shake up the XI v Austria 🇦🇷
🤨 Changes on the cards? Scaloni could shake up the XI v Austria 🇦🇷Lionel Scaloni is already mapping out Argentina’s strategy to face Austria in Dallas. After the win over Algeria in the opener, the coach from Pujato is preparing several changes to the starting eleven that will take on the Central European side. According to information from Olé, the first change will be at right-back. Nahuel Molina will return to the starting lineup in place of Gonzalo Montiel, who had been dealing with a slight muscular issue. The rest of the back line will remain unchanged, with Facundo Medina firmly established on the left flank.Changes in midfield? The real puzzle for the coaching staff is in midfield. Although the world champion trio seems untouchable, Thiago Almada could lose his place in the starting eleven after rotating heavily in the last training session. To replace him, Scaloni is weighing two tactical options. The first is to add a possession-oriented midfielder such as Exequiel Palacios or Leandro Paredes. The second, and more likely, is to include Nicolás González to help contain Austria’s powerful right-sided duo.Waiting on Julián ÁlvarezFinally, the attack still carries its usual question mark. Lautaro Martínez has the edge as the starting center-forward, while Julián Álvarez continues working toward full fitness so he can contribute important minutes off the bench. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. With Spain needing a World Cup reset, many thought Yamal would be back in the starting lineup, but he said that will not be the case just yet.“I’m fine, I’m feeling good, but it’s too soon, it’s unnecessary; I’m still settling in – it’s not the right time to play a full match yet – but I can play for as many minutes as the manager wants,” Yamal told Spanish public television TVE on Friday.“I want to be on the pitch; at the end of the day, even if you know you can’t play for 90 minutes, you always want to get out there and help the team.”This new golden generation of Yamal, Pedri, Ferran Torres and others is hoping to inspire Spain to their second World Cup title, following back-to-back round-of-16 exits in recent editions.Spain’s Lamine Yamal looks dejected after their goalless draw with Cape Verde [Claudia Greco/Reuters]Saudi Arabia high on confidenceWhile Spain’s confidence might be low after the first game, the mood in the Saudi camp is great.Their 1-1 draw with former world champions Uruguay was a “booster for our psychology”, said coach Georgios ‌Donis, who only took over the team two months before the World Cup.Despite having limited time with the squad, Donis’s Saudi Arabia did well to walk away with a point, keeping themselves alive in the hunt for the knockouts. After the unexpected result against Cape Verde, Spain will not be taking Saudi Arabia lightly. After all, the Saudis caused a major surprise in the 2022 World Cup’s opening round, defeating eventual champions Argentina. The Asian giants, making their seventh appearance in North America, registered their best result in 1994 with a run to the round of 16.Spain vs Saudi Arabia predictionStats provider Opta’s supercomputer has handed Spain a whopping 86.7 percent probability of winning against Saudi Arabia, who have a mere 4.3 percent chance of winning. There is a 9 percent probability of a draw.Initially, Spain were the frontrunners for the World Cup triumph, but after their opening match goalless draw, they have slipped to fourth in Opta’s prediction list, with France now the most favourite (15.43 percent). Now, Spain have a 12.04 percent probability of winning the tournament.Spain vs Saudi Arabia: Livestream, kickoff timeSpain: LA1, PLAY, DAZN Mundial (6pm, Central European Summer Time)Saudi Arabia: beIN SPORTS MAX 5, beIN SPORTS 4K HDR, beIN SPORTS MAX 1, TOD, beIN SPORTS MAX 3, beIN CONNECT (7 pm, Arabia Standard Time)United Kingdom: BBC One, BBC iPlayer, ITVX (5pm, British Summer Time)United States: Universo, FOX, FOX One, Telemundo App, Telemundo Network, Peacock (noon, Eastern Daylight Time)Fans of Saudi Arabia celebrate after their team took the lead against Uruguay at Miami Stadium on June 15 [Alex Slitz/Getty Images/AFP]How does the group stage work?Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Cape Verde are in Group H.They all have a point each, with Uruguay on top due to the highest team conduct score. Brazil have completely lost their fear factor – Carlo Ancelotti must find a new way
Long after Brazil’s 3-0 win over Haiti had eased to the pace of a training game, and Carlo Ancelotti was actually playing some of the positives down, there was suddenly a rush of energy near the press conference room. People were hurrying over, in a way they weren’t quite doing for Matheus Cunha or even Vinicius Junior. In the corridors leading up from the Philadelphia Eagles’ dressing room, where the post-game media duties were taking place, were a proper constellation of stars. All of Romario, Bebeto, Rivaldo and Kaka were just... milling around, waiting to go somewhere. They were so idle, in fact, that they were happily posing for the multiple requests for selfies. People were of course doing the cradle celebration to Bebeto, who was only too delighted to smile along. Now with silver hair, the former striker was resplendent in a blue suit and pink tie, making him look like a Republican senator. On his lapel, though, was one reason for all the fuss. He and Rivaldo had little pins of the World Cup itself, given they’ve actually won it.Romario wasn’t quite dressed like that, since he is working for Brazilian television. The star of USA 94, in fact, conducted the flash interview with Vinicius.Vinicius Junior isn’t fazed by much, but perhaps an interview with Romario did it (AP)While the Real Madrid forward is hardly fazed by much, you can imagine how intimidating it could be to be interviewed by a legend who has done what you never have but an entire nation is desperate for.And that, as well as all the buzz around legends, raises something else about this Brazil team. It was already written in these pages last week that the famous yellow shirt has lost its allure. That goes hand in hand with how this team – at least as a concept – have lost their fear factor.Sure, you are still wary of them. You wouldn’t want to face them in the knockouts. But are you really scared of them? Are you intimidated by what they can do to you in an instant, in the way Romario or Bebeto could? You can see all of that old awe in the very wonder at their presence. They inspire delight because of how devastating they used to be.Even in victory, this Brazil team aren’t as intimidating as previous iterations (Getty)The likes of Cafu, Rivaldo and Bebeto still have an aura about them (Reuters)One of many tricks such stars pulled is that they actually played in dour sides – in both 1994 and 2002 – but what lasts in the memory are the moments of magic; those flashes when they’d suddenly illuminate and decide a match in seconds. That’s what this shirt used to represent. It was spectacle, sparkle and... stardust. It was awesome, as they say here, but in the truest sense of the word. You were afforded a rare glimpse of a higher level of player. You feared what they could do to you. This was Brazil. Now, they’re just another good team, with some stars. If England were to face them in a potential quarter-final in Miami, could they really be considered favourites? And there is more to this than just how the globalisation of football has made us so much more familiar with the best in the world. The 1994 Brazil team were actually pretty dour, but the moments of magic live long in the memory (Getty)Brazil haven’t even had a properly good World Cup since they last won it.Little wonder they’ve lost their fear factor. In the 24 years since Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho all won it – and the other two “Rs” were also here tonight in even more elevated circumstances – Brazil have got past the quarter-finals just once. And that ended up being the worst experience of the lot, as a home World Cup clouded by so much nervous energy collapsed into that 7-1 humiliation against Germany. They’ve otherwise been beaten by France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Croatia in relatively staid eliminations. The former winners present in Philadelphia aren’t just heroes, then. They’re ghosts, whose success haunts every team. You can see some of this – the sense of some kind of mythical quest – in one of the main obsessions around the team. They are still looking for the messiah, the singular figure arising out of their history to carry the team again.Neymar’s time as the golden boy of Brazilian football has passed (Reuters)So it is that Neymar is in the squad almost as a totem, with Endrick now the chosen one. The majority Brazilian crowd were desperate for his eventual introduction from the bench, especially when Raphinha went off injured. Endrick offered real spark and then scored, only for the strike to be ruled out for offside. One of Ancelotti’s most important responsibilities with this team might be to temper all of that, to bring the kind of balance that his famous composure lends itself to. Here, he had to explain why Rayan initially came on.The win over Haiti otherwise duly showed how this Brazil aren’t quite one level or the other. They don’t look elite as a side, but there is quality in moments. They are exceptional in certain positions, but so mediocre in others. They put on a bit of a show, but that in a game where it was still occasionally difficult not to turn to your phone for distraction. Maybe the most important development, however, is how they are picking up momentum as Ancelotti gradually figures things out.Carlo Ancelotti is slowly figuring things out as Brazil boss (AP)Vinicius made it two goals in two, while scoring another that was classically Vinicius. How many times have we seen him outstrip a defence to finish like that?He may not yet have the aura of his predecessors present here tonight, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that he’s one of the best in the world. The same could be said of Alisson for his position, and the goalkeeper even added to the show with one fine turn.Gabriel and Marquinhos are both so secure at centre-back. Bruno Guimaraes is sought-after in the engine room, and – for all the focus on the midfield – were the workmen of 1994 and 2002, like Mauro Silva and Kleberson, really better?Cunha, meanwhile, may have offered Ancelotti that solution up front, with two very different types of goal.Matheus Cunha may have offered Ancelotti an answer to one of his problems (AP)The first showed a poacher’s instinct. The second was the type of thrashed high finish he has already made a trademark for Manchester United.Just when you thought the chance had gone, Cunha produced something. Maybe it will be like that for the team as a whole.Typically, though, just as one solution presented itself, another problem arose. Raphinha went down injured, when he’d been so impressive in stretching the game.Ancelotti addressed this in the same tempered way. Maybe it will be the story of their campaign. No, Brazil do not have that fear factor. But they do have something, and it can grow.

Nick Woltemade optimistic of World Cup breakthrough despite limited Germany role
Nick Woltemade optimistic of World Cup breakthrough despite limited Germany roleDespite having slipped down the pecking order in the German national team, Nick Woltemade remains optimistic about getting his special World Cup moment during the tournament.“That’s what the national team coach tells me. The tournament is hopefully still long for us. I’m working hard for my chance,” Woltemade told RND.Woltemade has been on the bench for Germany’s last two games – a 2-1 friendly win over the USA and a 7-1 World Cup opening victory over Curacao – but remains positive.“This doesn’t unsettle me, I can deal with it. Overall, the past year has been crazy for me; it has changed my life,” said the Newcastle United forward.“When I stood on the pitch with the whole team before the match against Curacao and we sang the anthem, I was smiling from ear to ear because it is so big and beautiful to be part of the biggest stage in football.”With four goals in six matches during Germany's World Cup qualifying campaign, Woltemade has already shown what he is capable of in the national team shirt.“The goals gave me a lot of confidence. I know my contribution to our successful qualification, and I’ve shown my ability at that level. But I’ve always been aware that other phases can come as well,” he said. Both Kai Havertz and Deniz Undav are currently ahead of the former Stuttgart forward in the pecking order for the striker position.Germany face Ivory Coast in their second World Cup match on Saturday evening.

Congress wonders as the Iran war draws to a close: Was it worth it?
Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., speaks with reporters before a Republican lunch at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, June 16, 2026. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)2026-06-20T12:04:50Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The question hangs in the halls at the Capitol: Was it worth it?Congress, which never authorized the war against Iran yet never fully objected to it, now must grapple with the consequences of President Donald Trump’s nearly four-month conflict: the lives lost, the billions spent and the national security fallout that has reordered the political dynamics in the Middle East.Ask senators what they think about the deal Trump struck to end the war, and they do not search too far for words.“Pathetic. Failure. Inevitable conclusion of a combination of never making the case to the American people, flawed strategic vision, lack of grasp of the regional dynamics,” said Delaware Sen. Chris Coons, a Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.“How many ways, can I say, bad, bad, bad?”Yet Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, a past chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said that because of the president’s actions, “We are safer today.” “You can criticize — Oh, he didn’t totally win,” Johnson said. “Well, that was always going to be very difficult.” As Trump moves on to the next phase, it is left to the Congress to pick up the pieces: explaining the war to voters back home, restocking the military arsenal that has run low from bombing runs and trying to ensure the fragile ceasefire holds as the United States seeks to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions and work toward an uneasy peace. Read More More money for the PentagonDefense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the rounds on Capitol Hill this past week as lawmakers consider Defense Department funding as part of the Republican majority’s next big budget package. The White House has asked for a remarkable $1.5 trillion for the Pentagon this year, on top of the extra money that Republicans delivered as part of the Trump’s tax cuts package last year.Republicans are mulling a sizable $350 billion plus-up for Hegseth on par with the White House’s budget request that the GOP could pass on its own, through the reconciliation process that allows majority rule over potential objections from Democrats. Senators, meanwhile, are seeking to set some guardrails on Hegseth with a provision to block a portion of his travel fund until the Pentagon delivers various reports. One such report is on an investigation into the strike on an elementary school in Iran that killed more than 165 people, a flashpoint at the start of the war. Officials have said they believe the U.S. was responsible for the strike and that it was based on faulty intelligence.Questions swirl over what’s next in IranLawmakers are still processing what just happened after Trump swiftly signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran and opened a window of 60-day talks toward ending Tehran’s nuclear program.“I understand the president’s trying to find a peaceful solution to this,” said Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., who serves on the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence committees. “I commend him for that. But we’ve got a lot of questions.”Senators are particularly concerned about the tentative deal’s provision for a potential $300 billion fund for the “reconstruction and economic development” of Iran. To many skeptical Republicans, that money sounds similar to the planeloads-of-cash narrative they used against the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal, which offered a slim fraction of that amount, some $1.7 billion overall. To this day, Trump tells an exaggerated story of how that payment to Iran, for U.S. military equipment it never received, was made.“The only concerns I have are the money and the conditions,” said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. “If we send a trainload, a shipload, it’s gonna age as well as that,” he said. Circumspect over what was gained and lostOver and again Congress tried and failed to exert its authority under the war powers act to halt the U.S. military action in Iran. The House ultimately passed a war powers resolution that sought to force an end to the war after a small number of Republicans joined the Democratic measure last month. The Senate has voted nine times, including this past week, but failed to reach the majority needed. At the same time, Congress did not affirmatively authorize the war with a use of force resolution, as has been done in certain other conflicts, including the Iraq War.“I’m glad that the conflict has finally ended and hope the ceasefire holds,” said a statement from Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But Shaheen said the country must be clear-eyed about what has come about. Not one of the president’s objectives has been achieved, she said, and Iran won significant concessions.“The American people are paying the price with higher costs in every aspect of life and tens of billions in tax dollars spent,” she said.Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said it’s hard to see what leverage the U.S. gained to force Iran to a better negotiation. “You want to be able to give the benefit of the doubt,” she said. But Murkowski said, “I think we’re in a place where there is a deal that has been signed, but it doesn’t appear to me that it puts us in that much of a different position than prior to the beginning of the war.” ___Associated Press writer Mary Clare Jalonick contributed to the report.

Curacao's trailblazer doctor on football's big stage
One woman and 47 men: that is the gender split for head of medical staff at the men's 2026 World Cup.Dr Suzanne Huurman is only the third-ever female team doctor in the 96-year history of the tournament as head of medical staff for Curacao's national men's side - the World Cup's smallest-ever team by population and size. In 2010, Dr Celeste Geertsema worked with the New Zealand men's national team and became the first female doctor for a participating team at the South Africa World Cup, while Dr Silja Schwarz has been a team doctor for Germany men's side since 2023. When Fifa explained to Dr Huurman she was the only female head of medical staff in the 2026 World Cup, she didn't think much of it. "I didn't realise in the beginning because it's so normal to be the only, or one of the few, women in the room."But I hope to see more women soon because there are a lot more women out there who are capable."BBC Sport speaks to Dr Huurman around the challenges, the opportunities and what is needed to increase female representation in football.Brazil-born Dr Huurman has worked with Real Madrid, Go Ahead Eagles and PSV Eindhoven as well as being medical lead for the Netherlands Under-16 boys and doctor for the Dutch women's handball team.Curacao, a Caribbean island of about 158,000 people, is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is culturally Dutch-influenced but not a full sovereign state. They qualified for the 2026 World Cup unbeaten, with seven wins and three draws.Dr Huurman is not intimidated by working in a male-dominated field although she explains there are challenges. "If you show them you're capable and you're good at what you do, then it's easy that they accept you because it's about quality and performing. If they see you're capable and you have the same goals, it's straightforward," she said."But you have to prove yourself. It's hard to get in because in the beginning you always have a lot of people that say no, this cannot be possible. How can women work in a male environment?"With Curacao, the whole federation was completely male - no females, not only in the medical team but anywhere. We travel with 49 people - players and staff. I'm the only woman."Watch live as Ecuador take on Curacao in KansasOh, brother! The sibling rivals lining up for different World Cup teamsA 7-1 defeat but the Curacao fans are just happy to be thereWhat are the challenges? Dr Huurman studied medicine in the Netherlands in 2008 and she recounts the gender split on her course as female heavy. She said: "When I studied medicine, it was around 70-75% women and the rest were men."I did my speciality in sports medicine in 2014 and then it skewed the other way - it was only 20-30% women. So it was in this [sport] speciality that I saw the difference."Female doctors did not support every squad at the 2023 Women's World Cup, with England and Sweden among the nations represented by male team doctors. When asked why there are so few female doctors working within football, Dr Huurman identified the 'always-on' culture as a barrier. She said: "It's not only your capabilities - if you're a good professional that's one thing, but it's the travel, the lifestyle which can affect your personal life."If you have a family [or] you're pregnant, you will be out of work for a certain period – and you cannot time it perfectly with a professional football season. There must be someone who can cover. And that's hard as you want to be there for the team. "It's not only in football, but the whole elite sports world, which is demanding 24/7."What more can football do? In 2026, in an effort to accelerate change, Fifa introduced new rules for women's tournaments. The regulations state at least one member of medical staff must be female and at least one coach must be a woman. At the match between Curacao and Germany, for the first time in men's World Cup history, there was an all-female medical team - Fifa match doctor Dr Emma Lunan, Curacao head of medical Dr Suzanne Huurman, Germany team doctor Dr Silja Schwarz, emergency medicine doctor Dr Carrie Bakunas and Dr Kerry Peek, the injury spotter.Dr Lunan told Fifa: "Hopefully this is a springboard to show that expertise in sports medicine and performance medicine is not dependent on your sex or gender and the opportunities to progress can be based on your competence."Dr Huurman thinks the new regulations are positive. "When I started with Real Madrid in 2020, I worked with the women's team and after that I switched to the men's. When they started the women's team, all the staff except me were male," she said. When asked how football could improve, Dr Huurman suggested considering agile-working options."I know countries like Sweden have a rotating system with different doctors – week one, one doctor, week two, a different doctor and so on. This flexible-working approach might suit female doctors better, although elite sport is not used to it yet - they are used to having one permanent doctor with one team."For women who are told no, Dr Huurman urged females to prove themselves: "I heard it a million times - you cannot do this because you're a woman - especially in professional football. "But if you prove your quality and you're a good professional, you can do it. "Known as the Blue Wave, Curacao made history last Sunday when they scored their first-ever World Cup goal against Germany in Houston. However, their celebrations were short-lived, as the four-time winners cruised to a 7-1 win.Curacao will look to increase their goal tally against Ecuador and Ivory Coast in their remaining group games, and Huurman says the squad remains upbeat."We are optimistic for our next two games," she added. "They're happy, they're focused. I saw Spain drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, so you never know."Play BBC Sport's new World Cup predictor gameWorld Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

John extends Buddies stay after playing through pain barrier
Declan John "was playing through a painful injury and put off his surgery" last season to help St Mirren avoid relegation, manager Craig McLeish has revealed as the left-back was rewarded with an extra year on his contract. The 30-year-old Welshman, who initially joined on a short-term deal in November 2024, is now contracted to the Scottish Premiership club until summer 2028.McLeish described it as "a fantastic piece of business" to extend his stay further."Declan is a really important player for us and I think he's one of the best full-backs in the league," he told St Mirren's website. "He brings so much experience and leadership on and off the pitch and is a core part of our experienced group of players."He was playing through a painful injury and put off his surgery to try and help us over the line. I think that speaks volume of Declan as a character and I'm delighted to have him for the longer-term."John played for Cardiff City, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Rangers, Swansea City, Sunderland, Bolton Wanderers and Salford City before moving to Paisley and making 62 appearances, scoring three times and contributing 11 assists. He said he is "not far away" from a return to full fitness and added: "The club has shown really good faith in me over the last couple of seasons. "I think I've done quite well over my time at the club and it's nice for the club to come forward and offer me the extension."

Mikel Merino returns to full Spain training
Mikel Merino returns to full Spain trainingThe Arsenal midfielder has played limited minutes in Spain’s past three matches after returning for the Champions League final.Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty ImagesMikel Merino has returned to full training with Spain after completing two individual sessions on an programme designed to manage his recovery from the foot injury that kept him out for four months.Merino missed 28 matches for club and country after fracturing a bone in his foot. Mikel Arteta described the problem as a “rare” injury, and the midfielder did not return for Arsenal until the final match of the season, the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.Spain have taken a cautious approach since his return. Merino has played no more than 29 minutes in each of their past three matches, two friendlies (22′ and 29′) and one match at the World Cup (19′).Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty ImagesFor Arsenal, the update is encouraging after Merino missed a significant part of the title-winning campaign.Merino’s availability remains important for Spain, but given there were doubts that he would even be fit for the tournament, the priority has been to avoid asking too much of him too soon. His return to normal training now moves him closer to a full role after several carefully managed appearances.Photo by Coral Scoles-Coburn/Getty Images

Vargas World Cup debut strengthens Atletico’s belief in $7m midfielder
Vargas World Cup debut strengthens Atletico’s belief in $7m midfielderDiario AS report that Atletico Madrid have reaffirmed their confidence in Obed Vargas (20) following his World Cup debut for Mexico against South Korea, with the 2026 tournament serving as an early validation of the club’s decision to bring him to the Metropolitano in January. The Mexican midfielder came off the bench to play 20 minutes, nearly scored, and visibly altered the game’s rhythm at a point when South Korea had begun to assert control.Atletico Madrid reaffirm interest in Obed VargasAccording to Diario AS, those inside the club have been encouraged by what they saw from Vargas in that cameo appearance – not only the near-goal but the intensity and directness he brought to a match that had begun to drift away from Javier Aguirre’s side. The report describes Atletico as feeling reaffirmed in their original assessment: that they signed a player capable of delivering in the present as well as appreciating significantly over a longer horizon. The performance is being read internally as confirmation of the profile they recruited rather than as new information that has materially changed the club’s plans for him. Vargas has a contract with Los Rojiblancos until 2030, and Diario AS note that he has secured a Spanish passport ahead of the 2026-27 season, which removes any non-EU registration complication and gives Simeone full flexibility in how he deploys him.Who is Obed Vargas and what has he shown at the World CupVargas is a Mexican central midfielder who came through the Seattle Sounders academy, signing a homegrown deal in December 2021 and going on to make over 90 MLS appearances for the club. His consistency and development in that environment attracted sustained European attention before Atletico sealed a deadline-day transfer in early February 2026, with reports in MLS circles describing the deal as worth approximately $3-3.5 million upfront, with incentives potentially pushing the total beyond $7 million and a 25 percent sell-on clause retained by Seattle – a club-record outgoing fee for the Sounders. His World Cup display against South Korea encapsulated the qualities that drew Atletico to him in the first place: ball-winning aggression, tempo-setting, and the ability to impose himself on a match quickly. Diario AS describe him as having been intense and technically sharp during those 20 minutes, producing a volley that the goalkeeper was only just able to keep out. Mexico qualified from the group stage, meaning Vargas will have further opportunities to build on that debut. What this means for Atletico Madrid’s summerVargas’s World Cup timing matters beyond the performance itself. Atletico’s summer has been shaped by significant movement through the squad, with reported plans to move Julián Álvarez on and active talks to strengthen in other areas. In that context, Vargas holding his own at a major international tournament while contracted through 2030 consolidates rather than complicates Atletico’s midfield picture – he is not a transfer target to be pursued but an asset already in house whose value the club are watching grow in real time. The key structural question heading into 2026-27 is whether Vargas earns consistent minutes under Simeone or finds himself used as rotation cover. The Spanish passport resolves the registration issue entirely, so the decision will rest purely on football grounds. What next for Obed Vargas?Diario AS note that no specific decisions have been taken about his immediate role, but the tone of the reporting suggests the club are in no hurry to send him elsewhere. The next meaningful development will be how Vargas performs if Mexico advance deeper into the tournament – further prominent minutes would only sharpen the internal debate about his place in Simeone’s first-team plans from the start of the season.

Warriors 'progressing' in Kristaps Porzingis contract extension talks
The Warriors are searching for bargains this offseason as the team hopes to fill out their roster while maintaining as much cap space as possible to bring in a star-caliber player. For that reason, Anthony Slater of ESPN reported that Golden State was interested in reuniting with Kristaps Porzingis on "a short-term deal at a reduced rate from the $30.7 million he played for last season."Following that report, NBA insider Marc Stein revealed that both sides are "indeed progressing" in extension talks, which would bring Porzingis back to the Bay Area. This new contract is likely to be at a much lower rate than the three-year $116.2 million extension the Latvian center is eligible to sign. While a deal hasn't yet been completed, the progress should encourage Warriors fans, as it seems the former NBA champion is interested in playing at a discount instead of testing the free agent market. But this could certainly change as Golden State's summer includes many moving parts. This article originally appeared on Warriors Wire: Golden State 'progressing' in Kristaps Porzingis contract extension talks

Iowa football offers 2029 DB Earnest Winters III

Thoughts on a 9-7 Rangers win
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JUNE 19: Ezequiel Duran #20 of the Texas Rangers gestures toward his dugout after hitting an RBI single during the sixth inning against the San Diego Padres at Globe Life Field on June 19, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images) | Getty Images Rangers 9, Padres 7And like that, the Rangers’ losing streak ends.Didn’t look that way at first, though, did it?Uncharacteristic wildness from Jacob deGrom in the first inning, capped off by a Ty France grand slam, meant the Rangers were down 5-0 before they ever came to the plate. The France bomb was church, it seemed like. But not to your resilient Rangers. Bottom of the first, there’s an E1, a couple of walks, a cavalcade of doubles, a couple of infield singles…And like that, the Rangers are up 6-5. We feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The cold pricklies have been banished, at least for the moment. One of the fun things about baseball is that you see a lot of fun and unusual stuff if you watch long enough, get to experience weird things.Like two teams combining for 11 runs in the first inning. After the first, things calmed down, of course. The Rangers outscored the Twins 3-2 the rest of the way. It was a low-scoring affair, really, after the first.deGrom retired 15 of 16 batters in one stretch. Of course, the one batter he didn’t retire was Ty France, who hit a home run. And the batter who broke up that stretch was Ty France, who doubled. That was followed by an intentional walk and an F9 to end the inning, and deGrom’s day.Six hits allowed by deGrom, half of them by France. Three walks, one intentional. Nine strikeouts. It looks like a pretty decent outing, if you don’t look at the runs allowed. The Rangers have now allowed 63 runs in 75 first innings this year, including 25 home runs.Openers for everyone, maybe?Jakob Junis and Jacob Latz combined to finish things out, with Junis allowing a run in the eighth and prompting Skip Schumaker to bring in Latz for a four out save.Wyatt Langford put up a 3 for 5 night, including a 430 foot homer in the eighth.Langford is now slashing .258/.300/.447, with a 108 wRC+, despite his awful start to the season.Langford’s homer is the seventh longest ball hit at the Shed this season. 11 of the 12 farthest balls hit this season have been since the start of the Houston series on May 26.Jacob deGrom hit 99.5 mph with his fastball, averaging 96.9 mph. Jakob Junis touched 93.9 mph with his fastball. Jacob Latz’s fastball maxed out at 95.1 mph.Wyatt Langford’s home run was 107.1 mph, and he had a 104.5 mph double. Brandon Nimmo had a 105.8 mph double and a 102.7 mph. double. Jake Burger had a 105.7 mph double. Josh Jung had a 105.3 mph single. Ezequiel Duran had a 103.5 mph single. Alejandro Osuna had a 102.1 mph double. We can think positively now, at least for a little bit, and hope this continues through the weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s bid for Ipswich Town job dealt crushing blow
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s bid for Ipswich Town job dealt crushing blow Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suffered a damaging setback in his bid to land the Ipswich Town job.Leading candidateEarlier this week, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Solskjaer was a leading candidate to replace Kieran McKenna in the Ipswich Town dugout.McKenna, who worked as a member of Solskjaer’s backroom staff at United, announced that he would be stepping down as Ipswich boss just weeks after leading them back to the Premier League.McKenna was strongly linked with the Fulham position but opted against making the switch to Craven Cottage, nor any other team, as he wants to spend more time with his family. He was under contract with the Tractor Boys until 2028, having put pen to paper on a new deal in the summer of 2024.In a statement, McKenna insisted that it was the right time for him to part ways with Ipswich after securing a third promotion in the last four years with the side.Alongside Solskjaer, Gary O’Neill was named as the other leading candidate to take over at Portman Road. Now, David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed that Ipswich have picked O’Neill ahead of Solskjaer.Solskjaer blowOrnstein reveals that Ipswich are working to finalise the appointment of O’Neill, who is set to join them from Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg.“A deal to bring in O’Neil, 43, as Kieran McKenna’s replacement is in the final stages and, if all goes to plan, the aim is to announce the Englishman next week.”“Ipswich’s talks with BlueCo, which owns Strasbourg and fellow Premier League side Chelsea, have been positive. It is likely O’Neil will be bringing close associates Tim Jenkins and Neil Critchley with him from the French side.”“O’Neil has developed a strong reputation within the industry for his work at Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Strasbourg.”Ornstein has confirmed Solskjaer was genuinely considered, but it looks like he’ll have to wait even longer for his return to management.online pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. Real Madrid midfield superstar turned to Ancelotti for help after difficult phase
Real Madrid midfield superstar turned to Ancelotti for help after difficult phaseThe 2025/26 season was a difficult one for Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham, who was unable to find his best form both under Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa.Even with the England national team, where expectations remained sky-high, the midfielder struggled to rediscover the level that had made him one of the world’s most influential players during his first couple of years in Spain.Bellingham seeks out Ancelotti for helpNow, according to AS, Bellingham turned to someone he trusted above all others: Carlo Ancelotti, in search of answers after a turbulent period. The Italian manager had overseen the finest football of Bellingham’s career, and the England star wanted to hear his advice again. Above all, he sought guidance on how to navigate his complicated relationship with England boss Thomas Tuchel.Bellingham reached out to Ancelotti for help. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images)Bellingham’s conversation with Ancelotti came at a moment when doubts were beginning to emerge around his role with the national team. Tuchel’s uncompromising approach had already become clear ahead of the World Cup, with players such as Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold paying the price after being left out of the squad. The Real Madrid midfielder wanted perspective from a coach who understood both elite football and the demands of managing dressing rooms. Ancelotti’s experience and calm approach proved invaluable.A difficult seasonLike much of Real Madrid, Bellingham endured a frustrating campaign. Shoulder surgery and muscular problems interrupted his momentum, while two managerial changes only added to the instability around him. He struggled to find his place and, at times, looked far from the dominant force he had been during his first season in Spain.Yet signs of recovery appeared towards the end of the campaign. Gradually, the midfielder began to resemble the player who had taken La Liga by storm.Back to his best with EnglandBack to his best. (Photo by Francois Nel/Getty Images)Bellingham’s first World Cup appearance with England offered further evidence that he has rediscovered himself. While his goal attracted headlines, his overall influence on the game stood out even more.He once again looked like the heartbeat of the side, dictating play and driving England forward. His performances have silenced some of the doubts that had emerged, including questions raised by Tuchel himself regarding his role and importance.Central to Mourinho’s Real MadridThose close to Real Madrid are delighted by the resurgence. Inside Valdebebas, Bellingham is viewed as one of the pillars of Jose Mourinho’s new project and remains untouchable within the club’s plans. There is a strong belief that much of the Portuguese manager’s success will depend on getting the very best from the England international. After months of uncertainty, Bellingham appears to have found his way back. And according to those around him, a crucial phone call to Carlo Ancelotti helped set him on that path.

Scientists Propose Black Holes Don’t Exist, Are Something Much Stranger
Welcome back to the Abstract! Here are the stories this week that shook the Earth, birthed a universe, exploded in space, and sought the fountain of lepidopterological youth.First, a wave from a disastrous earthquake journeyed to the center of the Earth and back, revealing a phenomenon that has never been seen before. Then: a recipe for a gravastar, a light shower of heavenly cremation, and the secrets of butterfly elders. As always, for more of my work, check out my book First Contact: The Story of Our Obsession with Aliens, or subscribe to my personal newsletter the BeX Files. The wave that literally moved a nationPark, Sunyoung et al. “ScS-triggered slip on megathrust interfaces after the 2011 MW 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake.” Science. The devastating Tohoku-Oki earthquake, which struck east of Japan in 2011, generated a seismic “shear” wave so powerful that it bounced off Earth’s core and hit the surface again 13 minutes later, permanently shifting all of mainland Japan about a quarter-inch east of its original position, according to a new study. While it is common for seismic waves to ricochet off Earth’s core, scientists have never detected a wave smashing back into the planet’s crust before. But when global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurements kept indicating that Japan seemed to have shifted slightly east after the quake, scientists realized with “surprise” that a core-reflected wave was the likely cause of the “slip event,” reports the study. “We report an extraordinary observation of ground motion in Japan after the…Tohoku-Oki earthquake attributed to a multiplate-interface slip event triggered by a shear wave that traveled to the Earth’s core and back,” said researchers led by Sunyoung Park of the University of Chicago.“This slip event, spanning two plate boundaries, has the broadest rupture area of any single event yet documented,” the team continued. “Its overall length is similar to that of mainland Japan (~3000 km), exceeding the mainshock rupture length by six to seven times and more than doubling that of the 2004 great Sumatra earthquake.” Even though the seismic uppercut was far less intense than the original quake, the near-simultaneous arrival of the wave across such a huge area caused a slip between continental plate boundaries. As a result, mainland Japan moved about six millimeters toward the Pacific Ocean, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but scientists have never observed a single seismic event moving a large landmass in this way. The discovery not only reveals a mind-boggling new phenomenon, it serves as a heads-up in preparing for future colossal quakes and assessing their aftermath. The core-reflected wave “is a previously unrecognized source of seismic hazard, which can potentially (re)activate the mainshock area and the broader surrounding megathrust interfaces,” the team concluded. In other news…What else can you make with collapsing matter?Jampolski, Daniel, and Rezzolla, Luciano et al. “Formation of gravastars.” Physical Review D.Just when you thought black holes couldn’t get any trippier, along comes a “gravastar.” These objects are hypothetical alternatives to black holes that do not contain a singularity or an event horizon, beyond which normal physics breaks down. Instead, physicists theorize that a massive star could collapse into a different type of compact object, dominated by dark energy, which could trigger the birth of a mini-universe inside of it, according to a new study.“Because a gravastar possesses neither a singularity nor an event horizon, and since its compactness can be brought arbitrarily close to that of a black hole, it has long been argued that it would be difficult to distinguish it from a black hole,” said authors Daniel Jampolski and Luciano Rezzolla of the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Germany.A comparison of black holes and gravastars. Image: Finq“We here present, for the first time, a model for the creation of a static gravastar following a gravitational collapse of a spherical cloud of matter,” the team added. The study models a pathway to the formation of a gravastar by imagining a uniform dust cloud collapsing toward a point at the center called a “de Sitter region,” which begins to expand. The inward collapse of the cloud and the outward repulsion of the de Sitter region, which is essentially an expanding mini-universe, results in an equilibrium state that would be virtually indistinguishable from a black hole to outside observers like us. Finally, a hypothetical object for people who think black holes are not weird enough. Bonus points for the study’s brainy asides, such as this one: “Obviously, if a quantum-gravitational description were possible, the zero-size de Sitter bubble would be naturally replaced by a Planck-size bubble.”Like, duh! Stardust to stardust, radioactive ashes to radioactive ashesKoll, Dominik et al. “The timing of the last r-process event near Earth from interstellar 60Fe, 244Pu and 247Cm deposition on Earth.” Nature Astronomy.Speaking of the weird corpses left behind by massive stars, Earth is constantly getting sprinkled with their radioactive remains. That’s the finding of a study about a deep sea rock dredged up from nearly 16,000 feet under the Pacific Ocean that scientists found is bedazzled with the ashes of dead stars. The rock is a chunk of ferromanganese crust, which forms on the ocean floor from minerals that precipitate from seawater. The rocks also capture rare heavy elements—such isotopes of plutonium, iron, and curium—that can only be sourced from cataclysmic cosmic events, such as explosive supernovae, or collisions between existing stellar corpses called neutron stars.Lead author Dominik Koll with a sample of the ferromanganese crust. Image: Helmholz Zentrum DresdenUsing this rare record, scientists detected radioactive isotopes that suggest Earth has been passing through the fallout of an ancient “kilonova” that occurred when two neutron stars merged more than 100 million years ago. These kilonova mergers, also known as “r-process events,” leave a distant isotopic signature that includes the radioactive isotope plutonium-244, which the team detected in the rock.“Our measured interstellar signatures suggest the occurrence of an old and rare r-process event leading to a diffuse [plutonium-244] background inside and outside the Local Bubble,” which is the term for our region of the galaxy, said researchers led by Dominik Koll of Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. “The trajectory of the Solar System through the Galaxy could impact the recorded r-process radionuclide abundance on Earth or the Moon.” In other words, we are all just casually wafting through the smoke of stellar pyres in our orbit around the galactic center. Hope that adds a little cosmic spice to your day. May you live to the ripe old age of one year Foley, Jessica et al. “Evolution of increased longevity and slowed ageing in a genus of tropical butterfly.” Nature Communications. We’ll close, as all things should, with butterfly Methuselahs. To better understand the processes that drive aging and longevity, scientists looked to the Heliconius family of butterflies, known as heliconians, which are known to live substantially longer than its close relatives, though their lifespans hadn’t been previously examined in depth.Heliconius butterflies. Image: Repeating Patterns of Mimicry. Meyer A, PLoS Biology, Vol. 4/10/2006, e341The team was surprised to learn that these butterflies can live for nearly a year whereas their close relatives in their “tribe” live for mere weeks, revealing a “25-fold variation in recorded maximum lifespan across the tribe,” according to a new study. “This range far exceeds previous estimates, and is among the largest ever recorded for such closely-related taxa (with comparable differences reported only for two groups of fish: rockfishes, and roughies,” said researchers led by Jessica Foley of the University of Bristol. Indeed, if humans exhibited this range of lifespan diversity, plenty of us would be living past 1,000 years old.The team also discovered that Myscelia cyaniris, which is not a heliconian, is “the longest-lived butterfly species to date based on data from butterfly exhibitors with a maximum reported lifespan of 380 days,” confirming that many butterfly families have evolved extreme longevity.Unlike their close relatives, heliconians feed on pollen, which suggests that this special diet is part of the secret to their senescent success. While this discovery sounds like grounds for a grift aimed at the anti-aging movement, let it be known that eating pollen only works as an elixir for butterflies. The pollen can’t make you live forever. Death comes for us all. Happy Summer Solstice! Thanks for reading! See you next week.

Will Sri Lanka A 'target' Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in tri-series final? Captain makes big statement after ugly clash
Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige has said his team will not be focusing on India A batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Sunday's tri-series final, despite the teenager being involved in an on-field confrontation during the teams' previous meeting.Sri Lanka A secured a place in the final after beating Afghanistan A by 103 runs and will now face India A in Dambulla. The last meeting between the two sides ended in a tense Super Over. Chasing 14 runs from the final three deliveries, Sooryavanshi could not take India A over the line and later got involved in a heated exchange with Sri Lanka A players. The incident ended with the youngster pushing Vishen Halambage. However, Arachchige said the episode is now behind them."The boys are not targeting anyone or anything. We are just enjoying ourselves. In a close game like a Super Over, emotions come out. That's normal," Arachchige told Sportstar. The Sri Lanka A skipper also backed his side ahead of the title clash."With the batting, there is no issue. And with the bowling, every fast bowler and spinner is doing very well. I think we are in good shape," he said.India A will head into the final looking to bounce back from that defeat to Sri Lanka A, with Sooryavanshi once again expected to be one of the main attractions in the summit clash. It remains to be seen whether both teams have moved on from that episode, but the focus will firmly be on Sooryavanshi, both for his temperament and his batting on Dambulla's slow surfaces. The 15-year-old, who was recently named in India's senior squad for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, has already enjoyed a breakthrough IPL.He had a record-breaking IPL 2026 season, smashing 776 runs in 16 matches at a staggering strike-rate of 237.31, including 72 sixes.Coming to Sri Lanka after riding the IPL high and a maiden India call-up, Sooryavanshi has found the slow pitches in Dambulla a bigger test, with the conditions curbing his natural strokeplay. The flamboyant left-hander has not quite been able to convert his starts. In four matches so far, he has scored 14, 44, 21 and 38.

Top 3 potential NFL breakout fantasy players from the AFC North
The Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, and Browns have a combined eight players inside the top 60 overall ADP. These guys are, of course, must-draft options. But who are some under-the-radar breakout candidates? The first is a likely “breakout” purely based on current market value. Rashod Bateman (WR98 / overall-273 ADP) is only one spot ahead of the Titans’ 26th-ranked D/ST. Yet the former first-round pick still has a little pop in an otherwise thin wideout corps led by Zay Flowers. Bateman is only two years removed from finishing as the overall WR40. In a passing attack that has nowhere to go but up, the overlooked Bateman has a realistic shot at top-55 numbers.Who will win Cincy’s #3 WR battle? It’s between Andrei Iosivas (WR108 / overall-300 ADP) and fourth-round rookie Colbie Young (WR135 / overall-359 ADP). As you can see, neither is appealing. However, with Tee Higgins missing 12 games these past three seasons, there’s a decent chance that Iosivas or Young will earn deep-league-streamer status at some point. Whoever gets the Week 1 nod for the #3 WR role will be at least a mini breakout candidate. Finally, while Bengals RB Tahj Brooks did not impress as a 2025 rookie, only Samaje Perine stands between him and the coveted handcuff job. Perine will turn 31 in September. Starter Chase Brown is coming off a 311-touch campaign. Neither Brooks (RB105 / overall-396 ADP) nor Perine (RB74 / RB255 ADP) is deemed “draftable. But if Brooks shines in camp, he would be a must-draft stash with significant breakout potential. If he flops, then the aging Perine would be a lower-ceiling breakout option. This article originally appeared on Touchdown Wire: Top 3 potential breakout fantasy players from the AFC North

Red Sox Minor Lines: Brayan Bello hit around in Worcester
Worcester: L, 3-9 (BOX SCORE)Brayan Bello allowed seven hits, three runs, walked two, struck out five, and let his pitch count get up to 88 (with just 49 strikes) without getting out of the fifth inning. The line by itself was fine for most pitchers. It wasn’t fine, though, for a guy already on a contract extension that many thought, myself included, solidified him as the future at the number two or three slot in the big league rotation. And, listen, Bello did keep the WooSox in the game. The offense even hung around. Tyler McDonough hit a homer in the fifth, the WooSox only had two at-bats with runners in scoring position but scored a runner with one of them, and Matt Thaiss had a clutch RBI knock, It wasn’t until Seth Martinez allowed five IronPigs (Phillies AAA) to score in the eighth when Iggy Suarez conceded the game and had Nate Hickey pitch the last out, officially turning this into laugher status.Portland: W, 6-2 (BOX SCORE)Gage Ziehl’s redemption arc continued against the Patriots (Yankees AA) on Friday night. He struck out nine and allowed four hits on two runs (one being a homer) as the bullpen carried the game the rest of the way scoreless. The Sea Dogs enjoyed a 5-for-10 night from the bottom of their lineup including a 3-run home run from nine-hole hitter Abhram Liendo. The Sea Dogs scored five in the second inning which would make Ziehl’s outing a lot more stress-free. Stanley Tucker is also on a nice five-game hit streak since joining the Double-A squad.Greenville: L, 2-4 (BOX SCORE)Greenville had just four hits on the night on the Jersey Shore (Phillies High-A) and just two of their starting nine had knocks, but that’s all the offense they needed behind Kyson Witherspoon’s five innings in which he struck eight Blue Claws out. Joe Vogatsky added five before Steven Brooks slammed the door. Ronny Hernandez, the catcher who’s been spending some time at first base, had what would become the put-away shot in the sixth inning with his sixth home run of the season.Salem: W, 7-6 (BOX SCORE)After losing ten consecutive games, the RidgeYaks have now taken two in a row from the Nationals. This was a high-scoring affair that was just 3-1 after six innings. The Nats’ three defensive errors came back to haunt them as the RidgeYaks also bid them death by a thousand paper cuts, essentially singling them to death. Mayers’ eleven outs in relief, striking out six, was also huge. For those of you still in front of a screen for the Red Sox, last night was a late night. Today will be the same, with first pitch at 10:10 PM. So, have a slumbering Saturday.

USMNT’s potential World Cup path after Group D win might lead to a realistic semi-final finish
Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesThe USMNT have turned a strong Group D start into a knockout path that suddenly makes a World Cup semifinal feel realistic.Nothing is locked in beyond first place in the group.Still, the first look at the bracket is exactly why beating Australia mattered so much.USMNT’s potential World Cup path opens after Group D winThe current snapshot has the USA lined up with a route that would avoid many of the tournament’s biggest names until the final four.As things stand, the USA’s path to the semifinal is Bosnia in the Round of 32, then New Zealand or Czechia in the Round of 16, before a quarterfinal against Congo DR, Ghana, Austria or Uruguay. That is the reward for beating Australia 2-0 in Seattle and watching Paraguay’s win over Turkey confirm the Americans as Group D winners with a game to spare. It also places them, for now, away from Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Morocco, and several other heavy hitters sitting elsewhere in the bracket picture. The caution is obvious. Groups E through L still have to play their second games, and every team in the tournament still has one final group match left after that.Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty ImagesThat means the standings can move quickly. A goal difference swing, a surprise third-place qualifier, or a favorite slipping to second could change the route before the Round of 32 field locks.USMNT’s potential World Cup path makes a medal game believableThe door is open enough to take seriously. The USA has not reached a World Cup semifinal since 1930, so any talk of a medal game should come with perspective. This still requires three knockout wins, pressure handling, and probably one opponent with more tournament pedigree. But the setup is far friendlier than a path through Brazil, Germany, or the Netherlands before the semifinals. Bosnia would be a manageable opening assignment, and New Zealand or Czechia would give the USA a real chance to dictate the tempo in the next round. The quarterfinal is where the run would become real. Uruguay would be the most dangerous name from that projected pool, while Ghana, Austria, or Congo DR would still bring enough pace and physicality to punish any sloppy night.Home soil matters here. The USA has already beaten Paraguay and Australia, controlled long spells without Christian Pulisic against the Socceroos, and generated the kind of stadium energy that can tilt knockout moments. They’re also guaranteed to play all knockout games until the semis in the West Coast (San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles), which is perfect given where their training base is.The bracket can still move before it hardens. For the first time in this tournament, though, a USMNT semifinal run sounds like more than patriotic hope.Read more:Why Lionel Messi is the only player in the World Cup with four gold patches on his jerseyUSA fans ‘shake’ Seattle’s Lumen Field celebrating World Cup goals, seismic graph confirmsFans shocked to find Harry Maguire giving away World Cup stickers in New York

Germany star "open" to summer move amid links to Man United, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid
Germany star "open" to summer move amid links to Man United, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real MadridFelix Nmecha is “open to leaving” Borussia Dortmund this summer, according to TEAMtalk.Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the clubs said to be monitoring the 25-year-old midfielder. The report claims that intermediaries are currently exploring the market and potential destinations on the player’s behalf, laying the groundwork for a possible summer move. They have reportedly indicated that, despite Nmecha being under contract until 2030 and having no release clause until 2027, a deal could be possible for around €60 million this summer. However, this contrasts sharply with a recent Bild report, which claimed earlier this week that it would take an offer of at least €120 million – double the amount – to convince Dortmund to sell Nmecha this summer.Currently, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder is focused on international duty with Germany at the World Cup, having started and scored in their opening 7-1 win over Curacao. Nmecha and Germany are set to face Ivory Coast in their second group-stage game on Saturday evening.

Rose guided Eagles to county, CVC Lake boys tennis titles
Following legendary coaches can be a daunting task.Michael Rose became just the sixth coach in Geneva’s 60-year tennis history this past season.“We felt the pressure,” he said. “There’s lots of expectations, and there was a great coach [Scott Torok]. To win the county tournament, a tough CVC [Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division], get two doubles teams to the district and finish second at a tough tournament [Mount Vernon Invitational], it felt like a great season.”For his efforts, Rose was selected the Ashtabula County Boys Tennis Coach of the Year for the 2026 season, as voted on by the county coaches.“All the credit goes to the boys,” he said. “I just happened to steer them in the right direction.”Rose took over for Torok, a longtime coach who retired in March.“Coach Torok and I have different personalities,” Rose said. “Coach did a great job of getting them ready for the season. I wanted to bring my own energy with the tradition that had been set.”Before the season started, Geneva conducted a play-off to determine spots on the court.“Geneva has always had a tradition of doing this, so we kept that part of the tradition,” Rose said. The Eagles captured the boys county championship for the first time since 2019.LJ Stark and Myles Colgan, Geneva’s first and second singles, respectively, and the doubles teams of Logan Willsey and Isaiah Rose and Shayne Miniard and Wyatt Jones also won county titles.“Since all-county was earlier in the season [April], we felt it was a good launching part to determine the things we needed to win on,” Rose said. “To win it is special for our seniors.”Once the Division II sectional started, Stark and Colgan teamed for one doubles team, while Willsey and Rose comprised the other one.“As the season goes on, we review what the players want to do, since the postseason is more about individuals,” coach Rose said. “Both doubles teams advanced to the district, so it proved to be a great decision.”At Canfield, Stark and Colgan claimed first, while Willsey and Rose placed fourth to reach the district.Stark and Colgan won a first-round district match in Akron, before ending their season in the next round. Both Stark and Colgan enjoyed playing for Rose.“Coach Rose was very good about preparing for us in practice, keeping our fitness up, as well as our technique,” Stark said. “Throughout the season, he made sure we kept our level heads, celebrating after wins, but also making sure to let us know we have more work to do.”Stark and Colgan are both continuing their education and tennis career at Mount Union.“Coach Rose was very helpful, especially in the offseason, keeping us fit and ready to go for bigger matches during the year,” Colgan said. “He was also very important in our processes of college recruiting, always willing to help and give advice.”Regarding next season, Rose said the Eagles will be a vastly different team.“We had seven seniors this season, so we’ll be young,” he said. “We’re graduating LJ and Myles, who did a great job of leading.“We’ll have plenty of great competition in the area, but our guys will put in the work, and we look forward to seeing them improve each day.”
