WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMThis gay dad felt incredible love & acceptance on his 65th birthday with his entire familyScott Ammarell’s kids came up with the idea for a “white party” celebrating their dad’s birthday on a chartered cruise in Turkey last year. It was the magic-hour culmination of “how loved I felt during the entire week,” he says. The cruise marking the gay dad’s 65th trip around the sun was eight days and seven nights, along Turkey’s west coast in the Aegean Sea. Related How this racecar driver went from flag marshal to building an all-LGBTQ+ racing team “We would sail during the day and find stops for swimming and adventure. At night, we anchored in various bays — on three nights, near a town so we could have dinner on shore and sample the cuisine. We also had several excursions to areas of interest, like mud baths and ancient towns. We spent a lot of time in the water.” The weather, he says, was perfect all week, though unseasonably warm. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “Hence spending a lot of time in the water!” he adds. What made the outing truly special for the longtime Chicagoan, who now administers a housing program for low-income families in Columbus, Ohio, was spending time with members of his chosen family. On the cruise, which included Ammarell’s three kids, their partners, a niece, and four good friends, gay and straight. “They’ve been my core support over the last two decades as I left my marriage and learned to live as my authentic self.” “While this is not the complete group, it is a beautiful representation of an accepting, supportive, and, above all, loving family.” Ammarell says he and his wife decided to split because their relationship “wasn’t working.” That gave him “the freedom to explore who I really was.” “I figured out that I was gay.” Ammarell’s kids were 14, 12, and 9 at the time he came out — a process he called “gradual and complicated,” and possibly traumatic for children at any age. But “they mostly took the news in stride. There have been a few bumps along the way, but they are all very accepting now,” he says. It’s easy to see why, in Ammarell’s modest, gracious descriptions of his birthday sail and loving family. Asked how his guests took advantage of the romantic setting, Ammarell replied, “My three children and their partners were the only couples on the boat, and I’m sure they took advantage. The night of my party, there was a lot of dancing, and I definitely witnessed some canoodling among them!” Of what his kids call “the best vacation we have ever taken as a family,” Ammarell says, “I still smile every time I look at a picture or think of it.” “The ‘chosen’ family aspect of the trip really shined through, and I do believe we are all much closer as a result.” Asked about his own romantic interests, the 65-year-old shares, “I do not currently have a partner, but I am still open to finding love.” There’s always room for more in a chosen family. “I am blessed beyond measure to have this group in my life,” the gay dad says, “and wish that all of us in our wonderfully diverse community will know the love of such a family.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -

Golden State55. New York 56. Chicago 57. Atlanta 58. New Orleans 59. Minnesota 60. Washington Who are the top prospects in 2026 NBA Draft?Cameron BoozerAt 6-foot-8 and 253 pounds, Boozer is the most polished player in the class. He scores from the post with both footwork and power, hits 40% of his 3s on high volume, and has enough handle to run offense as a point forward. He shifts between those modes based on what the defense gives him, and that adaptability led to a 35-win season at Duke and the Naismith Player of the Year. The worry is that he's not a vertical athlete and the foundation of all that production — overpowering smaller defenders — gets diminished against NBA length. Plus, he's a modern tweener on defense, lacking the explosiveness and size to protect the rim full-time and the lateral quickness to switch onto guards. With the bloodline of two-time All-Star Carlos Boozer, the team that drafts him is betting that skill, adaptability, and a track record of winning at every level all lead to superstardom. — Kevin O'ConnorAJ DybantsaDybantsa could become one of the NBA's most unstoppable shot-creators. At 6-foot-9, he has a special blend of athletic tools with the way he bends, shifts, and explodes with the ball in his hands. Dybantsa led the nation with 25.5 points per game while breaking Danny Ainge's 48-year-old BYU freshman scoring record with a 43-point eruption. He gets to the rim at will, cooks in the midrange, draws fouls at a high rate, and displays point-forward potential. What will determine his upside is whether he can become a knockdown 3-point shooter, as well as a more impactful defender to take full advantage of his physical tools. But the native of Brockton, Massachusetts, has a tremendously high floor with his scoring skill alone. — O'ConnorDarryn PetersonPeterson is a buttery smooth scorer with a blend of fluid body control and positional size that gives him the ingredients to become an elite NBA player. At the high school level, he was a dynamic playmaker who used his burst to get into the teeth of defenses and generate buckets for himself and his teammates, while also showing off the kind of shot-making that draws comparisons to Hall of Famers. At Kansas, he thrived in an off-ball role, stroking jumpers out of movement actions and showing he can scale up or down depending on what a roster needs. Even when he isn't scoring, he's a high-impact defender who causes chaos off-ball and has the 6-foot-10 wingspan to switch screens. The concern isn't his game. It's his body. He missed 11 of 35 games and pulled himself out of others due to cramping, capping off one of the weirdest freshman seasons in recent memory. — O'ConnorCaleb WilsonWilson is the most gifted athlete in the draft class. He's 6-10 with springs for legs. When he's flying above the rim, finishing through contact, and chasing down every shot in his area code, he looks like a future franchise cornerstone. But the conversation changes when you watch his jumper because he hasn't shown any consistency as a shooter at any level. Still, even without the jumper, he has star upside. — O'ConnorMikel Brown Jr.When Brown is in the zone, he has an unstoppable pull-up jumper, an ambidextrous finishing ability, and the quick reads to rifle passes before the defense has time to react. He had a 45-point breakout performance in February after a back injury dogged him all freshman year and then ended his year later in the month. The absences muddy the evaluation and leave real questions about his consistency that may not get answered until he's fully healthy. — O'ConnorHow does the latest mock draft look?Check out the NBA Draft Guide for Kevin O'Connor's latest two-round mock draft and Big Board, featuring scouting reports on the top 100 prospects.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSouth African holds world’s oldest ultramarathonMore than 20,000 runners took part in the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon earlier this month, a nearly 55-mile (89 kilometers) race between the South African cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The Comrades race has been held every year since 1921, pausing only during World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unusual due to the fact that it changes direction every year, meaning that on an “up-run” year, runners must climb 5,905 feet (1,800 meters) to Pietermaritzburg, which is 650 meters higher than coastal Durban. The race’s long history means it has also become symbolic of South Africa’s desegregation process following the end of apartheid: “You would have these scenes in the 1980s of a white runner sharing a bottle of water with a black runner, which was such a small gesture, but such a huge thing in that society that was so divided,” one South African sports journalist told The Guardian. South African long-distance running also recently enjoyed another significant milestone when Cape Town became the eighth city to be granted the status as a World Marathon Major and the first in Africa.— Paige Bruton0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGeorges St-Pierre wants Justin Gaethje to retire: 'Health is the priority'Georges St-Pierre knows a thing or two about retiring on top.Add former UFC dual-champion St-Pierre to the list of fighters who are urging Justin Gaethje (28-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) to hang up his gloves after upsetting Ilia Topuria to claim the lightweight title at UFC Freedom 250 last Sunday.St-Pierre vacated his UFC welterweight title after a controversial title defense over Johny Hendricks in 2013, but returned four years later to submit Michael Bisping and capture the UFC middleweight title in November 2017. He called it a career then and never entertained fighting again."He's the kind of guy that works really hard and he comes back from adversity," St-Pierre said of Gaethje on "The Break Talk." "It's really inspiring to see what he has accomplished. You might not like what I'm going to say, but if I were him, because I like him, retirement. I heard Demetrious Johnson said it, but that's what I would do. That would be an amazing ending. What else does he want to accomplish? He did it all."Gaethje refused to commit to retirement after promising his mom that he wouldn't discuss the topic. However, "The Highlight" recently revealed to Joe Rogan that he plans on trucking on, and St-Pierre would like him to reconsider."Of course, for money. If you stop now, you're under the impression that you're leaving money on the table, maybe because you're fighting for a title," St-Pierre said. "And I'm sure he can still beat a lot of guys. Maybe he can still go on a roll because he still can do it, but health, I think, is the priority."And also the fact that when you're a professional athlete in combat sports, it's very hard to retire on top because you're always tempted to see, 'Oh, I can do one more, one more, one more,' and you probably can do. But man, what a magnificent way to end a career it would be for him."This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Georges St-Pierre advises UFC champion Justin Gaethje to retire0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBen Johnson is confident Caleb Williams will handle stardom betterCaleb Williams had some very special moments at USC, and he was clearly the best quarterback in college football during his tenure. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRoma supporters launch anti-Greenwood petition: ‘We oppose the signing’Roma supporters launch anti-Greenwood petition: ‘We oppose the signing’A petition aiming to stop Roma from signing controversial former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been launched by supporters online, who feel that the Englishman is ‘one of the most divisive figures in modern football’.Roma supporters launch petition urging club not to sign Mason GreenwoodRoma have been strongly linked with a move to sign former Manchester United forward Greenwood in a €50m deal from Marseille, where he has spent the last two seasons.Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United and was arrested by the Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman, sexual assault and threats to kill in early 2022. He was released on bail pending further investigation two days later.Greenwood was arrested again in October of 2022 for breaching the conditions of his bail agreement, allegedly contacting his accuser. He was then charged with attempted rape for an incideent that allegedly occuured in October of 2021, and for engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour from November 2018.In February of 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and the discovery of ‘new material’.Greenwood has not played for Manchester United nor the England national team since his original arrest in early 2022 despite his contract running until the summer of 2025. He was sent out on loan to LaLiga side Getafe for the 2023-24 season and was then purchased by Marseille in a permanent deal in July 2024.GETAFE, SPAIN – MARCH 02: Mason Greenwood of Getafe CF looks on during the warmup in the LaLiga EA Sports match between Getafe CF and UD Las Palmas at Coliseum Alfonso Perez on March 02, 2024 in Getafe, Spain. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images)Now, with Marseille left needing to sell players to comply with financial fair play regulations, and with Roma in need of attacking reinforcements ahead of the 2026-27 season, there have been reports from multiple reports in Italy that the Giallorossi are keen to bring the controversial Englishman to the Stadio Olimpico in a deal that could be worth around €50m.This is a move that has left the Giallorossi fanbase divided and some supporters have launched an online petition in an attempt to stop the club from signing the 24-year-old this summer. The petition has gained close to 500 signatures in its first day.It reads: “We oppose the signing of Mason Greenwood by AS Roma.“This position is not based on personal hostility or a belief that people cannot rebuild their careers. It is based on the conviction that every football club has the right—and the responsibility—to choose who represents its badge.“Greenwood has been involved in multiple serious off-field controversies, including disciplinary issues with the England national team and allegations of domestic and sexual violence that generated worldwide attention. Regardless of later legal developments, these events continue to shape his public image and make him one of the most divisive figures in modern football.“AS Roma has consistently promoted campaigns against gender-based violence and in support of respect and equality, including initiatives such as “Amami e Basta.” Signing a player so closely associated with such controversies would create an unavoidable conflict between the club’s public commitments and its actions.ROME, ITALY – MAY 04: Fans of AS Roma show their support prior to the Serie A match between AS Roma and ACF Fiorentina at Stadio Olimpico on May 04, 2026 in Rome, Italy. (Photo by Paolo Bruno/Getty Images)“The consequences extend beyond football. Sponsors, community partners, women’s football, youth development, employees and supporters—especially survivors of domestic violence—would all be affected by the message this decision sends.“From a sporting perspective, no individual player is irreplaceable. European football offers many talented alternatives who do not carry the same reputational burden. Choosing Greenwood would expose the club to unnecessary commercial, public relations and institutional risks.“This is not a question of redemption. It is a question of representation. Every signing reflects the values a club chooses to stand for.“We respectfully urge AS Roma to abandon any pursuit of Mason Greenwood and to remain faithful to the principles that have earned the respect of supporters around the world.“AS Roma deserves players who embody its values, not players who undermine them.”0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFlorida Panthers all-in trade for Brady Tkachuk is bold, but it might not be smartOTTAWA, ON - APRIL 25: Brady Tkachuk #7 of the Ottawa Senators takes a break during a stoppage in play against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game Four of the First Round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 25, 2026, at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, ON, Canada. (Photo by Richard A. Whittaker/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Florida Panthers are a much scarier team than they were a week ago. The NHL was stunned on Sunday by the news that the Ottawa Senators were trading Brady Tkachuk to the Panthers in exchange for three first-round picks (two in 2026 and one in 2027), as well as a second-round pick in the upcoming draft. It’s a mammoth deal that unites the Tkachuk brothers on one team, gives Florida the scariest three-line offensive depth chart in the NHL, and seemingly puts them on a collision course with another Stanley Cup run. The near-universal reaction to the trade was some variation of “they’re going to be unbeatable for years.Just one problem: the Stanley Cup isn’t won on paper. In making the deal, we have a Panthers team that is accentuating its strengths, but also opening up its weaknesses even further. They are now a team that is wholly reliant on a handful of superstars to get the job done, killing what little depth they had in the process. As easy as it is to opine that Florida is now “unbeatable,” they have some significant issues holding them back.No. 1: What is this team doing in goal? There is a mammoth question mark in net for Florida as they prepare for the 2026-27 season. Veteran legend Sergei Bobrovsky is coming off a down season, but still remains the best clutch playoff goaltender in the NHL by a significant margin. The goaltending problem is compounded by the fact that backup Daniil Tarasov is also an unrestricted free agent. If the Panthers try to re-sign him it would be with the understanding that he would become the starter, which means he’s going to want starter money — and that’s an iffy prospect because Tarasov hasn’t neccesarily shown the ability to be “the guy” in net. That brings us back to Bobrovsky, and any hopes that Florida would get him to take a hometown discount are out the window. Bob is reportedly looking for a multi-year, $42M deal at age 37, wanting something in the $6-7M AAV range is simply impossible for the Panthers, as is any dream of making another trade to somehow land Connor Hellebuyck from the Jets. That’s because …No. 2: The Panthers have put themselves in a dangerous cap positionFlorida was in good shape prior to the Brady Tkachuk trade to be able to make some smart deals and bolster their roster at several positions. Instead, this deal essentially made the Panthers stronger at their best position, without allocating resources to their other needs. As it stands, the Panthers have $7.5M in open cap space and significant holes they need to patch. The goaltending is a mammoth problem, but so is their back-line depth. This Brady Tkachuk deal could have priced them out of both making a deal for Hellebuyck, as well as reliably retaining A.J. Greer — who will have suitors in the open market. This is compounded by the fact that they have now opened up multiple high-value prospects to being poached through RFA, with teams knowing the Panthers are in a vulnerable cap spot.Ben Steeves showed enormous AHL promise this season while playing for the Charlotte Checkers. Steeves made his first All-Star Game and registered 45 points in 72 games. The 24-year-old forward figured to be part of the Panthers’ long-term plans, but now he could easily be signed for a mid-level contract that would put him out of range that Florida could match, but not give them great compensation either. The same could happen with Mikulus Hovorka. If the Panthers want to actually solve their net problem by trading for Hellebuyck, it will require clearing salary. Reports are that the team nixed any discussion of Anton Lundell to the Senators in the Tkachuk deal, which could mean they intend to hold him for a separate trade — but that doesn’t sound great either from a roster perspective. Let’s assume they find a way to get Hellebuyck for Lundell (and something). They will have essentially traded one of the best young forechecking centers in the NHL for Brady Tkachuk, changing their forward dynamic — while getting only slightly better in goal. That seems like a really iffy tactic.No. 3: … if they’re healthyThe huge caveat to the Panthers’ chances is “if they’re healthy.” It’s a refrain you tend to hear a lot when it comes to the Florida Panthers. They would have won this year “if they were healthy,” they will win for the next four years — “if they can stay healthy.”Florida can’t stay healthy. This isn’t a genie that can be stuffed back in the lamp. Numerous skaters at numerous positions have established injury concerns, and the physical way the Panthers play isn’t going to make that easier. Sam Bennett hasn’t played a full regular season in a decade. Matthew Tkachuk is still coming back from surgery. Brad Marchand was hurt in 2025-26, and he’s also 37-years-old. None of these are really issues in isolation, but there are going to be injuries when you go so profoundly all-in on stars while requiring them to play physical, Florida Panthers hockey. Imagining a world where the Panthers are always healthy just isn’t a reality at this point. Will their injuries be as bad as last season? Probably not, but something will pop up and the depth has never been more thin than it is right now.The Brady Tkachuk trade is a make-or-break for next seasonFlorida pushed all its chips to the middle, and they’re going for it. On paper, the roster looks absolutely terrifying, with the Panthers leveraging their winning pedigree and their state’s tax-free status to assemble a unit that nobody else could. The issue is that they have left themselves open on various fronts to see it all go up in smoke.Brady Tkachuk is a good player, but he’s not his brother. The Panthers made a superstar-level trade for a player who isn’t a superstar. The hope is that Brady will have a Mitch Marner-esque breakout now that he has fresh scenery, but that is wishful thinking. The likelihood is that he will be a very good player for Florida and add to the team’s overall ethos — but it’s difficult to fall head-over-heels in love with the trade, considering what they have lost and will lose because of getting Brady Tkachuk.Like any all-in deal: If they win the cup next year it’s worth it, anything less will have made this trade a failure.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJets fans choose their top rookie for 2026Jun 10, 2026; Florham Park, NY, USA; New York Jets edge David Bailey (31) warms up during minicamp at Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Mandatory Credit: John Jones-Imagn Images | John Jones-Imagn Images The Jets made a lot of noise in the 2026 NFL Draft. The team made four selections in the top fifty using a combination of its own picks and others acquired in trades. Big things are expected from this rookie class. The Jets are looking for four immediate starters.Which rookie will have the best season? That’s what we asked in this week’s SB Nation Reacts survey. It is logical that Bailey would have the highest expectations. He was the top player picked in the class after all. The Jets believe that Bailey can be a foundational pass rusher who can change the defense.Interestingly the player who got the second most votes was D’Angelo Ponds, who was selected after a pair of pass catchers, Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper. It’s striking to see a second round pick get more votes than a pair of first rounders. I still kind of get it, though. Cooper and Sadiq need to fight for targets in a group led by Garrett Wilson. Ponds could be primed to make an immediate impact.Bet on the game with FanDuel Sportsbook, SB Nation’s official sportsbook partner!0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘Zyada soch mat’: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi reveals coach’s message before record-breaking knock in Tri-Series finalNEW DELHI: India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi revealed how a timely conversation with his coach helped him overcome a difficult phase and return to his destructive best in the Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla. The 15-year-old smashed a breathtaking 94 off just 29 balls, including the fastest List A half-century in history off only 11 deliveries, as India A thrashed Sri Lanka A by 66 runs to lift the title. But the record-breaking knock came after a lean run in the tournament and mounting scrutiny over his form and temperament following an on-field altercation during India A’s previous meeting with Sri Lanka A.“When runs were not coming, I sat down with Hrishi [Hrishikesh Kanitkar] sir to discuss a few things and he gave me a free hand to play freely,” Sooryavanshi told Sportstar after the final.“These conditions were slightly different, so it threw some challenges initially. So, I was trying too hard, but wasn’t able to execute the plans. That’s when he told me, ‘tu apna natural game khel, zyada soch mat’ (you play your natural game and don’t think too much about anything else). That motivated me and I continued to back myself and I’m happy that things worked out well,” the teenager said.‘There was no pressure on me’Coming into the summit clash, Sooryavanshi had managed only 117 runs in four innings and had struggled to convert starts on the slower surfaces in Sri Lanka. However, the left-hander insisted that pressure never entered his mind despite the criticism surrounding him.“There was no pressure on me,” Sooryavanshi said. “When I walked out to bat, the idea was to execute what I had planned for in the first ten overs and then take it forward. It worked…”His astonishing assault effectively settled the contest inside the first ten overs. India A raced to 132 in just nine overs before eventually posting 377/9. Sri Lanka A were then bowled out for 311 in 47.1 overs.Sri Lanka captain hails SooryavanshiSri Lanka A skipper Sahan Arachchige admitted that Sooryavanshi’s blitz put his side on the back foot immediately.“Sooryavanshi played a brilliant innings. We managed the innings nicely thereon but let it slide in the last two overs,” Arachchige said.“When we are chasing a big score, top order can fall cheaply. It happens. Young guys have played well, seniors have scored too. It's been a good tournament,” he added. With an India T20 debut awaiting later this month, Sooryavanshi’s latest masterclass served as another reminder that even during difficult periods, trusting his natural instincts remains his greatest strength. 1319092220 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

WWW.404MEDIA.COAre Public Libraries Becoming Children’s Libraries? This story was reported with support from the MuckRock foundation. Earlier this year, an Alaskan assembly member found himself in hot water for introducing a resolution that would have prohibited the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Public Library System from making books and other media available to anyone if deemed “harmful to minors” by the borough manager. The proposal wasn’t well received. Public records obtained from the Borough Clerk’s Office and shared with 404 Media show that the proposal was wildly unpopular. In emails to assembly members, constituents implored the resolution's sponsor Michael Bowles to withdraw it, calling it an “audacious and idiotic” attempt at destruction by way of “bureaucratic nightmare.” One constituent likened it to a proposal to “make all libraries children's libraries.” Another said its adoption could result in countless other books being removed that “are not sexual in nature” but which may contain “passing references to sex or adult themes.” A week went by before Bowles withdrew the request, seemingly to recalibrate. The Mat-Su Sentinel reported in May that the assembly member introduced and again withdrew a resolution that would have forced the system to pull the book Let’s Talk About It: The Teen’s Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human from shelves. This teen book has been in the adult section of Mat-Su’s borough-run libraries since 2023 when it was relocated from the teen section following a challenge. 404 Media has obtained records from dozens of public libraries, which include Requests for Reconsideration of Materials forms (RFRs) and official decision letters to challengers, along with draft versions of updated collection development policies. Much has been written in the last five years about the blatant efforts to suppress access to books that could contain any remotely challenging ideas or that deviate even slightly from cis white heterodoxy, but there’s been little talk about what that means from the rest of us. What my reporting confirms is that there are more books intended for children and young adults in adult sections because challengers didn’t believe it was appropriate for children and young adults to read about people of color and/or people who are queer, trans, or both, while also showing that a large-scale reorganization of public library collections is currently underway, that its application varies by state and locality, and that it’s been very hard to measure because it’s totally chaotic. Records obtained from one South Carolina public library system show that between June 2024 and August 2025, more than two dozen young adult books were relocated to the library’s adult section. Before that, the system had already resectioned more than two dozen other YA titles. The ACLU sued Greenville County Public Library System in 2025 for its board-adopted policies from 2024.Most letters from the library’s executive director didn’t include any reason for the relocation. However, more recent letters reference the library’s updated collection development policy. One frequently challenged title caught up in the mix at this library was The Hate U Give a YA book published in 2017 about a teenager who has to witness her friend—an unarmed Black man—be murdered by a police officer during a traffic stop. In 2024 at the Greenville County Public Library System, the book was challenged and retained before, in 2025, the book was again challenged and relocated to the library’s adult section. What happened in between these two events, the library’s board adopted policies making this and other books easier to remove. The majority of U.S. anti-library laws introduced from 2022 to now have largely focused on school libraries. Only a few states have laws that affect municipal and county public libraries, and so far, most of these efforts have either failed to pass or were struck down by governors. That’s not to say state governments haven’t found other ways to do censorship. As of now, at least two states have mechanisms tying public library funding to content restrictions. One of them happens to be South Carolina, which has a legislative requirement that threatens to strike the system from its budget unless the system certifies with the State Librarian that they don’t keep books in the children, youth or teen sections that could be of "prurient interest” to a 17 year old. A more aggressive version of state library-agency rulemaking comes from Alabama. In 2024, the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) amended its administrative code to withhold funding to public libraries that don’t do enough to restrict minors’ access to “sexually explicit” or otherwise “inappropriate” material, and has only continued to broaden its scope since. APLS has since gone on to broaden the criteria for what is “sexually explicit” before adding a provision to treat content dealing with the “concept of more than two biological genders” as inappropriate for youth sections. Tuscaloosa Public Library released records to 404 Media in response to a public records request that included tracked edits to the library’s 2025 collection development policy—initially based on a 2022 version—to meet APLS funding requirements. These changes appear to have been accepted. A line about the library welcoming community feedback on collection development, which an editor appeared to question, was also retained. The motives behind these changes to collection policies and funding incentives raise serious questions about who public libraries are for in America. William Rodick, who researches representation and culturally responsive teaching in Pre-K and primary education for the nonprofit EdTrust, says the mass relocation of diverse books from developmentally appropriate sections of public libraries into adult sections is a form of “intellectual condescension,” or the idea that young people aren’t capable of dealing with hard topics through literature.“That becomes manifest by removing opportunities for demonstrating honesty for students,” Rodick told 404 Media.Rodick says that students already have disproportionate access to spaces outside of classrooms where students can access reading materials. Regardless of where they’re getting their books, students of color and students who are LGBTQ+ aren’t presented in the majority of the books they do have access to—much less so now than just a few years ago. “And when they are presented, quite often those representations are stereotypes through really negative portrayals that are certainly not going to use the kind of motivation students need to engage with reading,” Rodick said. “The fear that I have is that at some point, we are going to see even greater disparity in outcomes than we already do for literary rates because of perpetual inaccess to quality materials.”Literacy rates have been trending downward for young people for a while. When the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released its Nation’s Report Card assessment in early 2025, it caused a stir, because one of the major takeaways was that more than 60 percent of fourth graders don’t read proficiently. Another was that the gap between the country’s strongest and weakest readers is widening because the lows are getting lower. Meanwhile, in 2020, about half of Americans between the ages of 16 and 74 were found to have low literacy skills. Nadja Young is chief brand officer with MetaMetrics, the company that developed the widely-adopted Lexile Reading Framework because it measures both reader ability and text complexity to match readers with books that are appropriately challenging. She says the focus for upper grades in high school is really about vocabulary in contexts that are authentic."Reading whole books absolutely helps to build that stamina," Young told 404 Media. Yet shrinking attention spans and fast-moving curricula are pushing schools toward teaching excerpts over whole books, to the point that college instructors observe that students are finding an expectation to finish a whole book for a college course novel. For The New Yorker this month, Becca Rothfeld literally wrote an essay about the immaturity of modern American books, likening them to “the literary equivalents of the social-media profiles that teen-agers (and adults who have never quite outgrown teen-age tics) compulsively check and update.” There are, of course, other factors to weigh when making widesweeping generalizations about literacy rates in adults. Young notes that adults with dyslexia, neurodivergence, and English language learners have historically and continue to have difficulty finding books they can parse that also honor their maturity and intellect. Lexile only measures a text’s complexity, not the content or themes a book contains. And yet, books are being relocated based on content or theme. Whether text complexity is an afterthought or conflated with content or theme is only something the most prolific censors can know."I don't think we could take the stance that it's going to bring the population up or down because as long as these books are still in the library somewhere, people can find them and the librarians can help direct them," Young added.Tasslyn Magnussun, an independent researcher and consultant with organizations like PEN America and EveryLibrary was an early chronicler of the current rise of modern-day book banning. She says book relocation in public libraries is really just a roundabout way of eliminating diverse representation from children’s literature entirely. “We may end up with collections that have weird pockets of literature in them, but I think the more likely scenario is the books won’t circulate,” Magnussun told 404 Media. When library books don’t circulate, they’re more likely to get weeded so the library can circulate new titles based on their collection policies. Collection policies, however, are being rewritten across the country to eliminate intellectual freedom and privacy for minors by targeting titles that can fit into a broad category called “sexually explicit,” which is synonymous with “harmful to minors.” This, Magnussun says, prompts publishers to argue that books with same-sex couples, transgender protagonists and people of color encountering racism, brutality—even genocide—don’t sell, because libraries are getting rid of them. Where the hypothesis holds up, Magnussun said, is that a young person’s constitutional right to access information is dependent on where they live and whether the adults in their lives recognize them as having free will or not. For adult sections of libraries, a disproportionate number of young adults will need some form of parental permission to check out books that deal with sensitive subjects that, like it or not, teens deal with. Unfortunately, the modern-day parental rights movement is predicated on a belief that children are the property of their parents, and therefore parents, “should be able to do anything they want to them,” including restricting their right to read and explore their interests to their fullest potential. Instead, Magnussun says, adults are blocking children from accessing developmentally appropriate material in instances that deal with sensitive subject matter. She takes YA books that grapple with hard topics, like suicide and child sexual abuse as examples, as these are issues censors frequently cite in RFRs for why a book should be relocated. The illusion of control is obviously not working and will have devastating consequences for the rest of us, which people do not want and vehemently reject. This means the answer likely lies somewhere between meeting your kids where they’re at, even when where they’re at bears no resemblance to the Devil You Know. Which is scary and sucks, but that’s also what parenting is, and which a lot of parents don’t seem to get.“We talk about parents’ rights, but what we really need is parent remedial education,” Magnussun added.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMarkéta Vondroušová, 2023 Wimbledon champ, suspended four years for refusing to take drug testMarkéta Vondroušová stunned the tennis world in 2023 when she became the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon. But the former Wimbledon champ now finds herself unable to compete for the next four years after refusing a drug test.Vondroušová was suspended for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Monday after refusing to submit to a drug test, the agency announced. The incident occurred in December, when a tester visited Vondroušová’s house. Vondroušová said the random visit caused an “acute stress reaction.” That, combined with Vondroušová being under heavy stress and fearing for her safety, resulted in the tennis star’s clouded judgement, leading her to refuse the test, she claimed in a statement in April. Vondroušová claimed that the tester arrived outside the specific window Vondroušová was given and said the tester did not properly identify themselves. The ITIA held a hearing in April and had an independent tribunal make a decision on Vondroušová’s punishment. The tribunal handed Vondroušová a four-year suspension. In a statement Monday, the ITIA said it understands testing can be stressful, but is necessary to ensure the competition is “fine.”“We understand that the testing process is uncomfortable, and acknowledge that it is an additional burden for players whose jobs already come with a high level of pressure and scrutiny, but it is essential to protect fair competition.”Additionally, the ITIA said that unpredictable testing — which is allowed outside scheduled windows — is “an essential tool.”“Unpredictable testing is an essential tool to protect clean sport. “The independent tribunal ultimately supported that principle. This case is an important reminder that players can be tested at any time, in any place, and that refusal comes with significant risk.”Under ITIA rules, a refused test is the same as a positive test, which led to Vondroušová’s suspension. She’s not allowed to participate in, coach at, or attend events organized by “or sanctioned by the ITF, WTA, ATP, the Grand Slams, or any national association” while suspended, per the ITIA.Vondroušová’s 2023 win at Wimbledon was her first — and only — Grand Slam win in her career. Since then, she’s made the quarterfinals at three Grand Slams, but has not progressed past that round.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat does Nelly Korda need to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame?Nelly Korda could – this week – become the first American to play her way into the LPGA Hall of Fame since Juli Inkster in 1999. Korda is two points shy of the 27 needed to qualify for what many consider the toughest Hall in sports. In fact, the list of LPGA legends who aren't in the LPGA's Hall is jarring, including Laura Davies, Meg Mallon, Dottie Pepper, Hollis Stacy and Cristie Kerr. A victory at this week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeline would give Korda three legs of the calendar grand slam and put her in the Hall of Fame.Regular LPGA events are worth one point and majors are worth two. Korda has four wins this season, including major championship victories at the Chevron Championship and U.S. Women's Open.Should Korda not win again the rest of the season, she's likely to earn two points at the end of the season for the Rolex Player of the Year award and Vare Trophy for low scoring average. Korda's 68.26 average is currently more than a full stroke lower than her closet competitor, Hyo Joo Kim.Lydia Ko was the last player to get into the LPGA Hall of Fame in 2024 when she captured Olympic gold in Paris. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDayton basketball: New assistant hopes to build on UD's Chicago pipelineJun. 22—Fourteen years ago, Nick Irvin gave Dayton Flyers men's basketball fans the first scouting report on a player who would become one of the most beloved players in program history.Kyle Davis committed to Dayton in August 2012. Doug Harris, of the Dayton Daily News, talked to Irvin, who had coached Davis with the Mac Irvin Fire and was about to coach Davis in his senior year at Morgan Park High School in Chicago, about the first recruit in a 2013 class that would leave school as the winningest class in UD history."It's a joy watching him play," Irvin said then. "He's a one-man press. He's all over the floor. He's going to get you the big steal or big rebound or you can tell him, 'Look, man, I need a basket. Can you get it? I don't care how you get it — you've just got to get it.' And he's going to get it, even if it's the hard way. That's the type of player he is."In 2026, with Irvin now continuing the Chicago-to-Dayton pipeline but as an assistant coach on Anthony Grant's staff, Irvin talked again to the Dayton Daily News about Davis."He was a hard-nosed player," Irvin said. "He refused to lose. He gave it everything he had on the basketball court."Dayton announced the hiring of two new assistant coaches, Irvin and Jordan Talley, on May 14. The additions followed the departure of associate head coach Ricardo Greer for a job at Pittsburgh.Greer's specialty was recruiting his hometown, New York City. Irvin could have the same impact in Chicago."There's a lot of history here with Dayton basketball and Chicago," Irvin said. "Kevin Dillard played here and did a phenomenal job. Josh Parker played here and did a phenomenal job. Getting the pipeline back from Chicago to Dayton, I'm going to strongly help to do that and try to will the Chicago area back to Dayton."Asked if his Chicago roots helped him get the job at Dayton, Irvin laughed and said, "It probably did, but at the end of the day, I can recruit anywhere. I don't mind if it's Chicago, California, Arizona. But that strong pipeline to Dayton, that's where it's at, and I'm gonna do my part to generate that."Irvin also coached another big Dayton name at Morgan Park, Josh Cunningham, who started his career at Bradley before playing three seasons with the Flyers from 2015-18."Fearless, tough, refused to lose," Irvin said of Cunningham, "and the thing with Josh is he used to be more on the perimeter, then he transitioned to playing down low. That helped his game tremendously, because he used to shoot a lot of 3s, but it got to where he could really be unstoppable. He won me two state championships. He was the force behind everything."Finding players like Davis and Cunningham is now the goal.Irvin spent the previous four seasons on Bobby Hurley's staff at Arizona State but lost that job when Arizona State did not renew Hurley's contract in March."I learned a lot from (Hurley)," Irvin said. "Not only is he a great coach, but he's also a great friend of mine. We're like brothers. I'm all about how you treat the kids and players, and (Hurley) and coach Grant have similarities in how they treat the players. This transition was easy in that way."Irvin's college coaching career started in 2020 when he took a job as an assistant coach at Western Illinois. He coached the previous 12 seasons at Morgan Park, winning at least 20 games every season and compiling an overall record of 301-70. Morgan Park won Class 3A state championships in 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2018.Irvin made the jump because he promised his dad, Mac, who died in 2011, and his mom, Louise, who died in 2019, that he would one day coach college basketball.McGlother "Mac" Irvin was a Chicago coaching legend. He was a basketball star at Tilden High School in Chicago in the 1950s. In 1992, he founded the Mac Irvin Fire, a Nike-sponsored team that became one of the most prominent club programs in the country.Mac and Louise had five sons and a daughter. Nick, 47, is the youngest."They wanted to have five players on the court and a sub," Nick said. "That was the plan. It's great, too, because all of us were into basketball. We've got a passion for it. We help each other out. When I was coaching high school ball, they came to the majority of my games. They used to critique the way I coach and everything, and it helped me as a coach because I value their opinion."The oldest sibling, Byron, 59, played in the NBA for three seasons. Another sibling, Lance Irvin, was the head coach at Chicago State from 2018-21.All of Nick's brothers and his sister paved the way for him."It's been a blessing for me," he said. "To this day, we're a tight-knit family."Nick played college basketball at Fresno State before returning to Chicago and starting his coaching career with the Mac Irvin Fire."I had no choice," Irvin said. "Basketball has always been my path all my life. My dad started all of us out. It's just been in my DNA from birth. When he first held me in his arms in the hospital, he said, 'You're going to be a basketball player or basketball coach.'"Now Irvin will take that passion to Dayton. He joins the program as Grant enters his 10th season. The Flyers have five returning players and nine newcomers, all of whom are now on campus. Cincinnati transfer Jalen Haynes was the last player officially added to the roster on the UD website earlier this month."I like the team," Irvin said. "I'm still getting to know the majority of them, but I like what we put together."Irvin last experienced UD Arena in 2023 when Arizona State beat Nevada in the First Four. He also attended games in Dayton when Cunningham played for the Flyers. He has followed Grant's career since Grant's first head coaching gig at Virginia Commonwealth."I'm very excited," Irvin said. "I've known about the program almost all my life. Great coaches, great fan base. The community so far has been great. I just can't wait for the season to get going, and hopefully, we'll make a big run."0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMToday in White Sox History: June 22On this day one year ago, Grant Taylor joined some select Chisox starter-reliever company. | (Photo by Colton Hall/MLB Photos via Getty Images) 1913Behind Ed Walsh’s shutout, the White Sox beat the St. Louis Browns, 2-0, in the second game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. It was the team’s 1,000th victory. Outfielder Shano Collins drove in both runs for the Sox in the win.Walsh’s shutout was actually the second attempt at 1,000 wins for the White Sox. In the doubleheader opener on this day, Jim Scott tossed a complete game, 85 game score (among the 250 or so best scores in White Sox history) with five hits, one walk and a club-record 15 Ks (including six straight) — yet still lost the game, 2-0. Death Valley Jim didn’t help his cause in the ninth, when his throwing error led to St. Louis’ second run. However, the opener loss was all on the Sox offense and its two singles; the unit didn’t get a runner to second base until the eighth inning, and only two got that far all game.1938White Sox outfielder Hank Steinbacher became the second player in franchise history to rap out six hits in a game. Steinbacher went 6-for-6 (five singles and a double) with two RBIs and three runs in Chicago’s 16-3 win over the Senators at Comiskey Park. The outburst raised his batting average to .337, and he finished the season at .331.The other six-hit game for the White Sox had come all the way back in … 1936.1958Some 45 years after winning Game No. 1,000 in franchise history, Ed Walsh Day was celebrated at Comiskey Park. The Sox honored their Hall of Fame pitcher, who recorded 195 wins, with a ceremony whose proceeds went to help pay his medical bills. Urban “Red” Faber and Ted Lyons were among those who attended.Less than a year later, the man who won 40 games in 1908 was dead of cancer. 1975In just his fifth game of the season and first-ever start for the White Sox, Jesse Jefferson threw 5 ⅓ no-hit innings against the Minnesota Twins to highlight a 9-2 romp at Comiskey Park. Jefferson’s nightcap masterpiece spurred the anemic, 26-38 White Sox to a doubleheader sweep in front of 23,299.In the second inning, Twins rookie (and future Minny manager) Tom Kelly lined a grounder through the box that Jefferson instinctively attempted a kick-save on; the righthander recovered the ball and threw Kelly out, but landed hard on his right wrist.Still, Jefferson powered through nearly four more innings before yielding a single to left field by future Hit Man Eric Soderholm. A double-play ball to third base should have gotten Jefferson out of the inning, but second baseman Bill Stein threw wildly to first and prompted manager Chuck Tanner to yank Jefferson; Cecil Upshaw finished out the game, going 3 ⅓ innings for his first save of the season (and what turned out to be the final save of his nine-year closing career).1983Noted team prankster, pitcher Jerry Koosman, somehow “discovered” Gaylord Perry’s false teeth on the mound at Comiskey Park during a game against the Mariners. He offered to return them, but Perry declined. The White Sox won the game, 6-3.1986Two days after the firing of Tony La Russa, Jim Fregosi signed on as White Sox manager. The Sox has lost seven of La Russa’s final 10 games as skipper, burying the club in the AL West race.“The team is 9 1⁄2 games out, that’s nothing,” Fregosi said. “I don’t see any reason we can’t turn things around and compete in our division. This is a young club, there’s talent here. There’s some speed, there’s defense and there’s power. We have to put it all together.”The White Sox briefly did put it all together under Fregosi, winning 11 of his first 15 games and clawing back to 38-43 and 6 1⁄2 back. However, they would get no closer, finishing 72-90 and in fifth place, 20 games behind. Under Fregosi, the White Sox did improve, however, going 45-51.1993On Carlton Fisk Night, the veteran set the major league record for games caught, at 2,226, breaking the old record held by Bob Boone. Teammates surrounded Fisk on the field for pregame ceremonies and presented him with a motorcycle that they chipped in $500 each and bought for him. The cycle was driven to home plate by Bo Jackson. Then the Sox went out and beat the Rangers, 3-2, on a game-winning single in the ninth inning by Lance Johnson, with Donn Pall getting the win in relief. Fisk went 0-for-2 in the game, and sent his jersey to the Hall of Fame afterwards.2010What would stand as the hottest winning stretch of the 21st century continued with a 9-6 win over Atlanta, moving the White Sox one game better than .500. The game featured a bizarre play that factored in the win: With two outs in the fourth inning and the Sox ahead, 6-3, Alex Ríos tapped a grounder that worked its way inside third baseman Brooks Conrad’s jersey, ending in an infield single. Paul Konerko then singled, and Carlos Quentin homered to make the jersey mishap cost the Braves.2025 By saving a 4-2 win at Toronto, Grant Taylor became the third White Sox pitcher since 1969 to start the opener of a series and earn the save in the series finale. It was also Taylor’s first MLB save.Taylor had started the game on June 20, pitching one scoreless, hitless inning as the opener. For his save two days later, Taylor gave up a hit but threw a scoreless frame to improve the White Sox to 25-53.Francisco Barríos first achieved the feat, in 1976, followed by Dennis Lamp in 1982.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 4 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMJD Vance is watching his presidential ambitions go up in smokeWhen JD Vance signed on to be Donald Trump’s running mate in 2024, he had to know what he was in for. After all, Trump stood by while an angry mob threatened to hang his last vice president, Mike Pence, (and reportedly expressed his support for the idea). But Vance must never have bet that his slavish devotion to Trump would leave him in such a dire position. It was a bad bet. Related JD Vance says sports teams “don’t have to do” Pride Nights anymore because “Trump won” Vance is now experiencing the well-worn truism that loyalty is a one-way street with Trump. The vice president is being set up as the fall guy for the inevitable failure of a peace agreement with Iran. Moreover, he’s become the handy target for infuriated MAGA followers who can’t bring themselves to lay the failure of the Iran war at the president’s doorstep. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Vance’s calculation in accepting the vice-presidential nomination was probably two-fold. First, he would be positioned as the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination when Trump’s second term ended (a risky bet in and of itself, since Trump may not want to relinquish the Oval Office). The other consideration was Trump’s age. After all, Trump is the oldest person ever elected to the presidency, and he’s not exactly a paragon of physical fitness. Should Trump die or become incapacitated, hello, President Vance. As a junior senator with less than two years in office, Vance wasn’t exactly the obvious choice for the number two spot. But he took obsequity to new heights in his quest to ingratiate himself with Trump, whom he once called “cultural heroin.” The Yale-educated Vance began to rail against “elites” and launched vicious attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, even though he once attended a pride parade. He also palled around with Trump’s sons, Eric and Donald Jr., who reportedly recommended Vance to their dad. When Trump was riding high, Vance was an eager and willing attack dog. But Trump has grown increasingly weak, largely because of the Iran war. When he’s threatened, Trump always finds a scapegoat. Now it is Vance. Trump couldn’t be blunter about it. In talking about the effort to sign a peace deal with Iran, Trump made one of his classic joke-no joke comments. “If it works out, I’m going to take the credit,” Trump said. “If it doesn’t work out, I’m blaming JD.” Trump has also commented, in front of Vance, on Vance’s opposition to starting the Iran war instead of just agreeing with Trump. Unfortunately for Vance, there’s little reason to think it will work out. Everything about the deal outlined so far stinks of capitulation. Iran is coming out of the war stronger than before, with a massive strategic advantage in controlling the Strait of Hormuz. For this humiliation, the U.S. is willing to broker a $300 billion investment in Iran while unfreezing $50 billion in assets. By comparison, Trump blew a gasket when then-President Obama brokered a deal with Iran that contained the country’s nuclear ambitions but gave Iran a paltry $1.7 billion in return. (Trump ripped that deal up in his first term.) As the chief negotiator for the deal, Vance is in a ridiculous position. He has to pretend that the deal is as fabulous as Trump pretends it is. He also has to contend with the most difficult part of the proposal, which includes ensuring Iran doesn’t develop a nuclear weapon. Worst of all, Iran holds all the cards. It shut down the Strait of Hormuz again because Israel continued its attacks in Lebanon against the extremist group Hezbollah, which Iran supports. Theoretically, the ceasefire applies to Israel and Hezbollah as well, even though neither party was involved in the agreement. Just to make things worse for himself, Vance has been grousing about Israel’s actions in a way that is eerily reminiscent of the student protesters that the Trump administration has been trying to deport. He complained that just as the negotiations are making headway, “All of a sudden, there is a major explosion that goes off in a civilian population center in Beirut, and a lot of people who have nothing to do with Hezbollah lose their lives. That’s not acceptable.” Comments like that widen the rift in the GOP between supporters of Israel and the anti-Semites who are increasingly a presence in the party. As a reminder, Vance refused to criticize young Republicans who casually used anti-Semitic, racist and homophobic language in their chats. He described criticism of the group as “pearl clutching.” This should be a peak time for Vance, with the publication of his new book about his journey to Catholicism. Unfortunately, it’s also an opportunity to resurrect Vance’s recent criticisms of the pope and the Vatican. In a long, generally friendly interview with Ross Douthat of The New York Times, Vance actually had to say the words, “I’m not fighting with the pope.” That’s not exactly the message you want to send when you’re trying to parlay your Catholicism for a presidential campaign. Of course, Vance’s presidential ambitions aren’t looking so great at the moment. Lots of MAGA won’t be happy with him because of the Iran negotiations, even if they succeed. Worst of all, his boss isn’t all that encouraging about his White House prospects either. Leaked reports suggest that Trump doesn’t think Vance has what it takes, especially compared to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Maybe Vance is learning what everyone else already knew: Throwing away your principles to ingratiate yourself with Trump is ultimately a losing game. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFantasy Baseball 2-Start Pitcher Rankings: At least 5 hurlers warrant strong consideration as streamers this weekFantasy managers will be treated to a deep list of two-start options this week. Even without an obvious headliner, there are at least five pitchers who warrant strong consideration and a few others who make sense in the right situation. On the hitting side, the Red Sox and Mets should meet the needs of anyone who is looking for immediate help.Two-Start Pitchers (listed in order of preference)Zebby Matthews, Twins, 15% (vs. LAD, vs. COL): Matthews has logged a 4.78 ERA that has been heavily influenced by a pair of 7-run disasters. The 26-year-old has notched a quality start in each of his other five appearances, and his 34:9 K:BB ratio is an impressive mark. Homer prevention has been the main problem for Matthews, both this season (1.7 HR/9 rate) and throughout his brief career. If he can survive a start against the high-scoring Dodgers at the outset of the week, he could thrive against a Rockies offense that typically struggles on the road.Andre Pallante, Cardinals, 42% (vs. ARI, vs. MIA): Pallante has always ranked among the league leaders in groundball rate, and is showing some skill improvements this year by producing a career-best 19.3% strikeout rate. Because he gives up plenty of contact, the right-hander will always be a weak option in the WHIP category. But he has become a serviceable innings eater on a team that has played better than expected, which makes him a viable option in 12-team leagues for two home starts this week.Anthony Kay, White Sox, 13% (vs. CLE, vs. KC): Although he struggled in a tough matchup at Yankee Stadium last time out (4 IP, 4 ER), Kay has produced respectable results (3.77 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 40:14 K:BB ratio) in nine starts since the calendar flipped to May. The southpaw finished six innings just twice this season, and the combination of a poor 7.0 K/9 ratio and inability to work deep into games gives him a low ceiling. That being said, he has favorable matchups this week, especially with the Guardians working without José Ramírez.Mitch Keller, Pirates, 31% (vs. SEA, vs. CIN): Keller is having a disappointing season that includes his worst ERA since 2021 and worst WHIP since 2022. While the right-hander must take responsibility for a small drop in his strikeout rate, the biggest reason for his struggles is a 63.1% strand rate that is the second-worst mark among qualified pitchers. Keller won’t make the cut in many leagues this week due to his bust potential, but with two starts at his pitcher-friendly home park, he is a better option than many will realize.Merrill Kelly, Diamondbacks, 41% (@ STL, @ TB): Kelly took a step backward in an inconsistent season when he gave up six runs on 11 hits over 5.1 innings against a mediocre Angels lineup last time out. The veteran has allowed two or fewer runs in half of his 12 starts but unfortunately surrendered five or more runs on five occasions. The result is a 5.81 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and a poor 42:28 K:BB ratio. Kelly is the ultimate boom-or-bust option in a week where he has mid-level matchups.Zack Littell, Nationals, 9% (vs. PHI, @ BAL): There are a few reasons to pass on Littell, who ranks second in baseball in homers allowed and lacks strikeout abilities (5.2 K/9 rate). But it’s worth nothing that since May 1, the veteran has gone 6-2 while posting solid ratios (3.83 ERA, 1.13 WHIP). Being backed by a high-scoring offense gives Littell some win potential, which means that he can be considered by managers who are desperate to make a move in that category.Grant Holmes, Braves, 25% (@ SD, @ SF): Holmes’ most recent start was cut short due to a weather delay, which may have been for the best given that he had allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over two innings. The right-hander has been the definition of a rotation filler this season, logging unimpressive ratios (4.33 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) while failing to work past the fifth inning in six of his past eight starts. Holmes has favorable matchups this week, which makes him usable for those in deep leagues who have modest expectations.Kumar Rocker, Rangers, 8% (@ MIA, @ TOR): Rocker is coming off arguably his worst start of the season, when he allowed six earned runs (seven total) over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Twins. The former top prospect remains a below-average starter in most areas, including his swing-and-miss abilities (7.3 K/9 rate) and control skills (3.9 BB/9 rate). Although his matchups this week are favorable, Rocker lacks the skills to climb high on this week’s deep list.Kyle Leahy, Cardinals, 4% (vs. ARI, vs. MIA): Overall, Leahy has no real strengths and one glaring weakness. The first-year starter has average control and below-average strikeout ability. He could likely survive those skills if opposing hitters weren’t regularly tagging him with hard contact. Until Leahy lowers his 11.5% barrel rate and 92.6 mph average exit velocity, he belongs on waivers in every mixed league.One-Start StreamersIn order, here are the best streamers for the week, with their start date and Yahoo roster rate in brackets.Gage Jump @ SF (Wednesday, 39%) Griffin Jax vs. KC (Wednesday, 35%) Troy Melton vs. HOU (Thursday, 30%) Noah Cameron @ TB (Wednesday, 37%) Sean Burke vs. BOS (Tuesday, 24%) Walbert Ureña vs. ATH (Friday, 43%) J.T. Ginn @ LAA (Friday, 48%) Michael McGreevy vs. ARI (Thursday, 33%) Jeffrey Springs @ SF (Thursday, 16%) Stephen Kolek @ CWS (Friday, 38%) Eric Lauer @ MIN (Monday, 15%) Matthew Liberatore vs. ARI (Wednesday, 8%) Sean Manaea vs. CHC (Wednesday, 16%) Keider Montero vs. HOU (Friday, 16%)Favorable Monday-Thursday hitting matchupsRed Sox @ Rockies, vs. Yankees: Not only do the Red Sox play four games over the next four days, but they also get to ply their trade at offense-inducing Coors Field against a Rockies staff that ranks last in baseball with a 5.53 ERA. The team lacks an obvious streamer, but those in deep leagues can try Marcelo Mayer (4%). Caleb Durbin (11%) also deserves credit for turning around a poor season with a recent hot stretch.Mets vs. Cubs: New York should produce some strong volume plays when they face four right-handed starters over the next four days. Outfielders Carson Benge (45%) and A.J. Ewing (16%) both bat from the left side, making them the top players to add. They are especially appealing in categories leagues, thanks to their steals potential.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFantasy Baseball Hitter Waiver Wire: Advanced-stats pickups to take advantage of key Week 14 matchupsIt’s a busy week with nearly half the league playing seven games. We still want to stream our hitters against the Rockies, Nationals, Angels, White Sox and Orioles pitchers. However, the Orioles have a few starting pitchers like Kyle Bradish, Trevor Rogers, Shane Baz and Brandon Young who have been pitching better lately. Below is our weekly adjusted scores for pitchers to see the team luck factors and skills we should be paying attention to. The one that might adjust over time will be the Astros, with Hunter Brown back into the mix.Week 14 adjusted pitching scores (worst to best). (Photo by Corbin Young/Yahoo Sports)Teams With Seven Games in Week 14Diamondbacks (4 at STL, 3 at TB)The Diamondbacks face five right-handed starting pitchers in Week 14. The Cardinals have been better than expected from a K-BB% perspective. Meanwhile, the Rays continue to pitch well. Volume will be favorable for the Diamondbacks’ hitters, but playing on the road might make the matchups more neutral.Red Sox (3 at COL, 4 vs. NYY)The Red Sox project to face three right-handed starting pitchers, including favorable matchups against the Rockies. They’ll miss Cam Schlittler, but the Yankees still have solid starting pitchers. Marcelo Mayer and Masataka Yoshida might be the biggest playing-time losers this week. Cubs (4 at NYM, 3 at MIL)The Cubs project to face five right-handed starting pitchers in Week 14. It’s a mixed bag of matchups, including a few tougher options in Nolan McLean, Freddy Peralta, Jacob Misiorowski and Kyle Harrison. Tigers (4 vs. NYY, 3 vs. HOU)The Tigers will face five right-handed starting pitchers in Week 14. Two of the lefties come early in the week via Carlos Rodón and Ryan Weathers. Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith have been sitting against lefties, though they only faced two since June 1. Astros (3 at TOR, 4 at DET)There are six right-handed starters coming up for the Astros. They’ll miss Tarik Skubal, but face Framber Valdez as their only left-handed starting pitcher on the schedule in Week 14. Their only strong-side platoon option that should gain playing time is outfielder Joey Loperfido. Royals (4 at TB, 3 at CWS)The Royals will have five right-handed starting pitchers in Week 14, including two in their first series against the Rays (Shane McClanahan and Ian Seymour). Michael Massey and Kameron Misner are the strong-side platoon options, though Massey started against two of the six left-handed starters. Mets (4 vs. CHC, 3 vs. PHI)Jesús Luzardo is the only left-handed starting pitcher who projects to face the Mets in Week 14. Jared Young, Brett Baty and MJ Melendez should benefit from a right-heavy slate. Yankees (3 at DET, 4 at BOS)This looks like a weak-side platoon week for the Yankees’ hitters. They’ll face Framber Valdez and Tarik Skubal in the first series. Then they face Connelly Early, Peyton Tolle and Jake Bennett, so that’s five left-handed starting pitchers that project to face the Yankees. This could be a deep-league boost for Amed Rosario and Anthony Volpe. Phillies (4 at WSH, 3 at NYM)The Phillies should face six right-handed starting pitchers in Week 14, with Foster Griffin as the only lefty on the slate. Since Gabriel Rincones Jr. has been called up, he has sat against all three left-handed starting pitchers. Justin Crawford seems to be platooned, as he only started against lefties in two of seven games since June 1. Cardinals (4 vs. ARI, 3 vs. MIA)Like other teams, the strong-side platoon options should benefit the Cardinals in Week 14. The Cardinals project to face six right-handed starting pitchers. Lars Nootbar (more on him later) and possibly Nathan Church will be the biggest beneficiaries. Rays (4 vs. KC, 3 vs. ARI)The Rays will face five right-handed starting pitchers. They’ll face one lefty in the first and second series of the week. Rangers (3 at MIA, 4 at TOR)Patrick Corbin looks like the only left-handed starting pitcher to face the Rangers in Week 14. Fire up Joc Pederson for some pop in deeper leagues. Blue Jays (3 vs. HOU, 4 vs. TEX)MacKenzie Gore is the only left-handed starter on the slate for the Blue Jays. Jesús Sánchez and Yohendrick Piñango (more on them below) should be the main beneficiaries as strong-side platoon options. Nationals (4 vs. PHI, 3 at BAL)The Nationals project to face five right-handed starting pitchers, with Jesús Luzardo and Cristopher Sánchez as the only two lefties on the slate. Luis Garcia Jr. is the only Nationals’ hitter who seems to be in a strong-side platoon. Shallow to Medium-League Hitter Pickups Alec Bohm, Phillies (42% Rostered)The Phillies face the Nationals for four games, ranking second-worst in the adjusted score. That indicates the Nationals’ pitchers have been brutal in nearly every pitching metric. Since June 1, Alec Bohm has been hitting better. Bohm hit three home runs with 17 RBI, one steal and a .299 batting average since June 1. After Bohm’s home run totals have been trending down over the past two seasons, with 15 in 2024 and 11 in 2025, he already has nine in 2026, projecting for 15-16. Though Bohm’s 3.4% barrel rate per plate appearance is down by over one percentage point, he hit four of 10 season-long barrels since June 1. Add Bohm in shallower leagues to stream in Week 14. Bryson Stott, Phillies (43% Rostered)Earlier in the season, Bryson Stott was being deployed as a strong-side platoon option. Like Bohm, Stott has been hitting better since June 1. Stott has a .290 batting average, zero home runs and four steals since June 1st. His .353 BABIP since June 1 is boosting his batting average, though his season-long batting average should regress closer to .250-.260. Stott has been pulling the ball more often (40.5%) into the air (16.1% pulled air rate). That coincides with Stott boasting a career-best 5.2% barrel rate per plate appearance, two points above his career norm. He is making small but notable approach changes. Though Stott isn’t as valuable in OBP leagues, he should be added and streamed in BA leagues. Cole Carrigg, Rockies (17% Rostered)Cole Carrigg was a top waiver pickup last week in deeper leagues. The Rockies will play three games in Colorado against the Red Sox and three at the Twins in Week 14. Boston and Minnesota rank inside the bottom 12 in the adjusted scores, suggesting we should stream hitters against them. Since Carrigg was called up on June 9, he played every day in center field. Though Carrigg’s lower batting average (.250) doesn’t wow us, three home runs and three barrels in the early sample garner our attention. Carrigg hasn’t been known for his power, but he swings the bat fast (74.6 mph bat speed) while pulling the ball into the air often (29%). Fantasy managers will want to scoop him up in shallower formats for some outfield help because there’s power and speed within the profile. Andrés Giménez, Blue Jays (14% Rostered)Andrés Giménez is hitting better, with a .294 batting average, one home run and four steals since June 1. Giménez has been more aggressive, given his career-high 43% chase rate, though his 77.2% contact rate is similar to his career average. The matchups against the Astros and Rangers could be challenging in Week 14. Though Giménez hits in the bottom of the Blue Jays’ lineup, he should be a medium to deep-league consideration for batting average and speed. Nasim Nuñez, Nationals (11% Rostered)There’s a league where I’ve been rolling with Nasim Nuñez at a middle infield spot for stolen bases. Earlier in the season, Nuñez’s batting average was awful, but he was stealing. Since June 1, Nuñez has a .404 batting average and four stolen bases, boosted by a .528 BABIP and six stolen bases. Nuñez already has 28 of the Nationals' 79 stolen bases (35.4%) this season. Most projection systems have Nuñez for 40-45 stolen bases. Ride Nuñez’s BABIP high as a hitter pickup for batting average and steals. Deep-League Hitter Pickups Lars Nootbaar, Cardinals (5% Rostered)We highlighted Lars Nootbaar last week after his return from injury. Since Nootbaar returned, he sat in all three games against left-handed starting pitchers. The Cardinals project to face six right-handed starters in Week 14, making Nootbaar a priority option in deeper leagues. Nootbaar is swinging the bat slightly harder (73.9 mph) and hitting four barrels with two home runs this season. The Cardinals face the Diamondbacks and Marlins in Week 14. Both teams rank in the bottom 10 in the adjusted scores, hinting at us wanting to stream against them. Nootbaar is more valuable in OBP leagues and should be a target for power in deeper formats. Josh Bell, Twins (10% Rostered)Josh Bell has been solid this season, with eight home runs and a .240 batting average. Bell continues to barrel up the ball with a 7% barrel rate (2026) and 8.6% (2025). He has been hitting well since June 1, rocking a .343 batting average and four home runs. Bell rocks an 8.3% barrel rate with a .396 BABIP since June 1, suggesting a mix of luck and skills in his favor. Look toward Bell for power and batting average in Week 14. Jesús Sánchez (6% Rostered) and Yohendrick Piñango (1% Rostered), Blue JaysThe Blue Jays have faced six left-handed starting pitchers since June 1. Jesús Sánchez and Yohendrick Piñango both played against one of the lefties since the beginning of June. Sánchez (1 HR, .256 BA) and Piñango (1 HR, .262 BA) have been solid since June 1, but the plate appearances have been limited. Both Sánchez (8.1% barrel per PA) and Piñango (5.1% barrel per PA) have power. Since the Blue Jays project to face six right-handed starting pitchers in Week 14, Sánchez and Piñango should warrant deep-league consideration to pick up and stream.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to Heat or Celtics gets final NBA Draft deadlineBucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to Heat or Celtics gets final NBA Draft deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Basketball fans will not have to wait long before they finally know where Giannis Antetokounmpo lands this offseason. The top two teams have been apparent: the Brad Stevens-led Boston Celtics and Pat Riley's hungry Miami Heat. When will the trade drop? It revolves around the timeline of the NBA Draft.Antetokounmpo trade to Celtics or Heat will happen before NBA DraftPer a report of ESPN's Shams Charania on Get Up, a resolution on the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade will happen before the NBA Draft."Sources tell me a trade and a resolution is coming for the Milwaukee Bucks with Giannis Antetokounmpo before the NBA Draft on Tuesday night. The Bucks are in serious conversations with two finalists, the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics. Both teams are Giannis' preferred trade destinations, but both of these packages are different deals. The variance of these deals is drastic. It's dramatic," the NBA Insider disclosed. As of the moment, Brad Stevens and the Celtics have firmly decided on placing Jaylen Brown as a trade asset to sweeten the agreement with the Bucks. Whether or not they do land the Greek Freak in this trade, it has also been reported that the duo of Jayson Tatum and Brown will be broken up. The Celtics are set on trading away Brown this offseason to another team despite of the trade outcome with the Bucks. Derrick White has also been a recurring name in these conversations."These have been intense negotiations,The Bucks engaged in conversations at the deadline. They've been open for business since the draft combine in May. They've narrowed in on these two teams right now. Giannis, my understanding right now, he is ready to be traded. Either Boston or Miami, and we'll see what happens over the next 24 hours," Charania added. For Pat Riley and the Heat, a few names have been pushed in for Antetokounmpo to get paired up with Bam Adebayo. Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and their 13th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft have all been offered to the Bucks. The biggest drawbacks have to be their contracts. Herro will become an unrestricted free agent by the end of the 2026-27 season, Jaquez is also in the same situation while Ware still has a club option that spans until 2027-28.The balance of the league is at stake in the next day. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat Magnussen’s NASCAR Debut Really Revealed: “F*** Around and Find Out”Kevin Magnussen was barely off pit road after the Anduril 250 at Naval Base Coronado before Noah Gragson was in his face.Gragson, already changed into street clothes, had waited for Magnussen on pit road and launched into a roughly 90-second confrontation.Magnussen’s response: “Get the f*** out of my face,” followed by repeated instructions to “f**** off.”A PR rep eventually stepped in to separate the two, with Gragson finally walking away.It made for a vivid scene. But the paddock screaming match wasn’t really about two difficult personalities finding each other on a tight street circuit. Two racing cultures arrived at the same corner from completely different directions, and neither of them was wrong by the laws of their own world. What Actually Happened, and Why It Was InevitableThe trouble began on Lap 25, when Magnussen braked later than Gragson into a corner and hit the back of him. The two then banged doors along the straight, with Gragson aggressively blocking as they scrapped over 32nd place – a battle that stretched across several laps, with Gragson at one point moving Magnussen in the chicane. When a caution flew shortly after, Magnussen got on the radio: “I’m stuck behind this guy. I don’t know who he is.”Later, approaching Turn 4 with a handful of laps left in Stage 2, Magnussen went up the inside of Gragson and tipped the No. 4 Ford into the wall, even appearing to throttle up in the moments before contact. Gragson hit the wall, broke his right-front toe-link, and was done for the day.Gragson’s grievance, put plainly on pit road: “You guys come over here, you f*** drive off into the corner, just because you got fenders on it.”He’s not entirely wrong by NASCAR‘s own logic. The unwritten code governing mid-pack racing in the Cup Series is, you don’t wreck someone running 30th in an early stage when neither of you has anything meaningful to gain. It’s a unsaid contract that keeps the sport functional when 39 cars share the same patch of asphalt for three hours. The problem is that Magnussen didn’t arrive carrying that contract. In F1, you arrive carrying carbon fibre and a set of stewards’ regulations. Contact is catastrophic – financially, structurally, competitively. The race craft that gets rewired into every open-wheel driver over a decade in the sport is built around millimetre-precision and zero-tolerance for touch. When Gragson bumped him in the chicane, Magnussen processed it the only way his instincts knew how: as a provocation requiring a measured, deliberate response. That response just happened to involve sending Gragson into the wall. What Magnussen’s Reaction Actually Tells YouThe more interesting half of the story is what came after. In interviews following the race, Magnussen said: “I have great respect for everyone except that guy. I’ll get over it. I actually like this kind of racing.”He wasn’t rattled and he wasn’t apologetic, and he certainly wasn’t performing composure for the cameras. He was energised. He told reporters Gragson had said a “whole lot of things I can’t say on camera,” before adding: “He was playing a bit stupid out there. He could’ve had a good race, but he chose not to. I felt like I was in a fistfight the whole race through.“It’s tough racing. You can’t mess around, you’ll find out.”Magnussen claimed the fastest lap of the race by almost eight tenths of a second, meaning the pace was genuinely there. He ran inside the top 20 for a large portion of the event, snagged the bonus point for the fastest lap late in the race, and finished 27th only after staying out on old tyres in a gamble on a caution that never materialised. If he ever came back with a working knowledge of the social code that governs stock car racing – when to push, when to let a position breathe, how to bank goodwill for later – that combination of pace and aggression could be genuinely worth watching. Whether he’d see the point in learning it is a completely different question.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMavericks hire former Michigan champion Dusty May as new head coachThe Dallas Mavericks shocked the NBA world Monday morning, agreeing to sign Michigan Wolverines coach and recent NCAA champion Dusty May to replace Jason Kidd as their head coach, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. This comes recently after the Mavericks were said to be monitoring both May and Duke head coach Jon Scheyer.Although Scheyer has a connection with Mavericks star Cooper Flagg, May proved to be easier to pry from his school than Scheyer. Additionally, May's Michigan Wolverines saw plenty of talent depart for the 2026 NBA Draft, as key contributors Aday Mara, Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. are all expected to be first-round selections, which certainly could have played a role in his decision. Either way, May is on to his first NBA job and will get to work immediately with the draft just one day away. This article originally appeared on Rookie Wire: Mavericks hire former NCAA champion Dusty May as new head coach0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCeltics' Derrick White in trade rumors that go beyond GiannisCeltics' Derrick White in trade rumors that go beyond Giannis originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Boston Celtics are apparently heavily involved in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade negotiations with the Milwaukee Bucks. Those rumors suggest it would take a package headlined by Jaylen Brown to get Giannis to Boston. The Celtics apparently could go beyond that this offseason, too, if they want.Derrick White is being targeted by other teams that apparently think Boston is open for major business. The Minnesota Timberwolves want White, writes Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic in a new article on Monday."Minnesota has been most aggressive in pursuing White, the Celtics’ defensive mastermind who has the experience and the savvy to help Edwards and the Wolves break through in the West," Krawczynski writes. "White turns 32 next month and saw his 3-point shooting percentage drop considerably this season, but so far the Celtics have rebuffed the Wolves’ advances."MORE: Celtics' Jaylen Brown trade offer for Giannis takes shapeIt's obvious why the Timberwolves would want this -- they had serious point guard struggles in 2025-26.Anthony Edwards is a great playmaker, but he doesn't need to initiate offense all the time.Donte DiVincenzo's injury made things tougher, too, and really emphasized what a player like White might do in Minnesota. For the Celtics, though, this would be a tough one. It would depend a ton on what they could get in return, and it's not clear the Wolves would have the kind of pieces Boston would want.Whether the Celtics get Giannis or not, giving up White is a totally different equation. Don't count on it happening, but apparently teams think there's enough of a chance that they're going after the talented point guard.MORE: Why Bucks trading Giannis before the draft makes sense0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 3 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

APNEWS.COMSupreme Court reinstates murder conviction in case of Etan Patz, missing New York City boyThe U.S. Supreme Court is seen, June 11, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mariam Zuhaib, File)2026-06-22T13:55:44Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday reinstated a murder conviction in the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz. The justices, by a 6-3 vote, granted an appeal from New York prosecutors who had urged them to undo a federal appeals court decision that overturned the verdict. The three liberal justices dissented.Prosecutors had been preparing to try the man, Pedro Hernandez, for a third time. His first trial ended in a mistrial. The unanimous panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed Hernandez’ murder and kidnapping conviction in the second trial because of how the judge had answered a question from jurors. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had called the basis for overturning the conviction “a slender reed” that essentially ignored a five-month-long trial with 66 witnesses. The justices agreed, in an unsigned opinion, that federal courts should not second-guess state courts under a 1996 federal law that was intended to reduce federal court oversight of state criminal trials. “The Second Circuit exceeded its authority in holding that Hernandez is entitled to relief,” the justices wrote. Hernandez, 64, has been serving a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.Bragg hailed the high court’s decision. “This office has remained steadfast in its pursuit of justice for Etan and the Patz family and will continue to stand by this important conviction,” Bragg, a Democrat, said in a statement. Read More Hernandez’ lawyers said they were “terribly disappointed” by the ruling. “We firmly believe that an innocent man is in jail for a crime that he did not commit,” attorneys Harvey Fishbein and Alice Fontier said.Hernandez admitted to the crime under police questioning, but his lawyers say he confessed falsely because of a mental illness that sometimes made him hallucinate. They emphasized that the admission came after police queried him for about seven hours before reading him his rights and recording the interview. Hernandez then repeated his confession on tape, at least twice. Etan vanished while walking to his downtown Manhattan school bus stop on May 25, 1979. Hernandez worked at a nearby convenience shop at the time, but the Maple Shade, New Jersey, resident didn’t become a suspect until 2012. Etan was among the first missing children ever to appear on milk cartons, and the anniversary of his disappearance became National Missing Children’s Day.Hernandez already has been tried twice. A jury deadlocked in 2015, and then a different panel of jurors convicted him at a 2017 retrial. During deliberations, the 2017 jurors asked a complicated question: If they decided Hernandez didn’t confess voluntarily when he hadn’t been read his rights yet, must they disregard his other confessions? The then-judge responded simply, “the answer is no.” The jury went on to convict. In overturning that verdict, the appeals court said the jury’s question should have gotten a more fulsome answer, including the possibility of discounting all the confessions. ___Associated Press writer Jennifer Peltz contributed to this report from New York. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBroncos roster: LB Justin Strnad (No. 40) returns as a key starterBroncos Wire's 91-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at seventh-year inside linebacker Justin Strnad, No. 40. Before the Broncos: Strnad (6-3, 245 pounds) attended Wake Forest for four years from 2016-19. As a member of the Demon Deacons, Strnad played in 46 games, making 244 total tackles (145 solo, 99 assisted, 22.5 tackles for loss), eight sacks, four interceptions, 10 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. After college, Strnad was selected by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round (178th overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. Broncos tenure: Strnad missed his entire rookie season after being placed on the season-ending IR with a wrist injury. In 2021, Strnad saw action in 16 games (five starts), making 36 total tackles (23 solo, 13 assisted) in his first taste of pro action. Strnad saw limited action on defense in 2022 and 2023, making only 10 total tackles in that time. His first real long-term service came in 2024, where he started eight of 17 games, making 73 total tackles (48 solo, 25 assisted, eight tackles for loss), three sacks, and three pass deflections. In 2025, Strnad was the beneficiary of an injury-riddled linebacker room (Drew Sanders-foot, Dre Greenlaw-thigh) and he began the season starting alongside Alex Singleton in the middle of the field. When Greenlaw was suspended following the Broncos' miraculous 33-32 win over the New York Giants (a game in which Strnad had a crucial interception), Strnad again took the field. Strnad played in 16 regular season contests (eight starts), as well as Denver's two playoff games, making 62 total tackles (24 solo, 38 assisted, five tackles for loss), 4.5 sacks, three pass deflections and an interception last fall. Prior to the start of 2026 free agency, the Broncos re-signed Strnad on a three-year, $18 million contract.Chances to make the 53-man roster: Near lock. Strnad will be a starter in the middle of the field alongside Alex Singleton, thanks in large part to the team releasing Greenlaw. While Singleton will likely wear the green dot in 2026, Strnad is a solid partner in crime who always seems to be flying around the field.Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRedrafting the 2025 NBA Draft lottery: 76ers pick Kon Knueppel over V.J. EdgecombeThe Dallas Mavericks were finally able to escape the Luka Doncic trade fallout thanks to No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg, who put together a marvelous Rookie of the Year-winning season in 2025-26. The Duke product was the clear top prospect heading into the draft, but plenty of question marks followed him. Some teams found the missing pieces to their young cores while others struck out with high picks. Thus is the crapshoot of evaluating young, unproven players. Now that we've got a year's worth of sample size and the 2026 NBA Draft is upon us, it's worth looking back at how everything shook out in 2025. Here's a redrafting of the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, starting in Dallas with the obvious pick.No. 1 Dallas Mavericks: Cooper Flagg, FOriginal pick: Cooper Flagg, FFlagg is a franchise-changing talent who led Dallas in points (21) and steals (1.2) as a rookie. He flashed rare positional versatility and became the first teenager to score 50 points in a game. It's only a matter of time until he's one of the best players on the planet.No.2 San Antonio Spurs: Dylan Harper, GOriginal pick: Dylan Harper, GHarper thrived as De'Aaron Fox's backup point guard and outplayed the veteran for much of the playoffs. The Rutgers product is physical enough to get to the rim whenever he wants and crafty enough to finish from virtually any angle. If he can develop a consistent jumper, he'll help San Antonio contend for championships for years to come alongside Victor Wembanyama.No. 3 Philadelphia 76ers: Kon Knueppel, GOriginal pick: V.J. Edgecombe, GThis one's controversial since V.J. Edgecombe had a stellar rookie year. It just speaks to how special Knueppel was. The Duke product averaged 18.5 points and shot a blistering 42.5% from 3. The spacing he provided offensively, along with his surprisingly passable defense, is largely why the Hornets made a leap under second-year coach Charles Lee.No. 4 Charlotte Hornets: V.J. Edgecombe, GOriginal pick: Kon Knueppel, GEdgecombe is a special athlete who looks to be a perfect backcourt mate with Tyrese Maxey. While he's already a quality defender, Edgecombe fared better offensively than most expected as a rookie, especially as a shooter. Edgecombe shot over 35% from 3 and if he can continue to make strides there, he'll be an elite two-way player. No. 5 Utah Jazz: Ace Bailey, FOriginal pick: Ace Bailey, FIt's hard to evaluate a Jazz team that had no interest in winning or even playing competitive basketball in 2025-26. Nevertheless, Bailey had his moments, though not enough for a player who once had No. 1 pick hype. His length and shotmaking ability are enough to keep him here, though.No. 6 Washington Wizards: Derik Queen, COriginal pick: Tre Johnson, GNew Orleans gave up 2025 No. 23 pick Asa Newell and what eventually became the eighth pick in the 2026 draft for Queen. It was certainly a costly decision, but not one the Pelicans entirely regret. Queen led New Orleans in rebounding and looks to be the team's center of the future. No. 7 New Orleans Pelicans: Jeremiah Fears, GOriginal pick: Jeremiah Fears, GFears improved as the season went along and finished the year on an offensive tear, averaging 22.2 points a game over the final 10. He has strides to make as a shooter and playmaker, but his craftiness as a ball-handler alone makes him worth New Orleans' continued investment.No. 8 Brooklyn Nets: Collin Murray-Boyles, GOriginal pick: Egor Demin, GWhile Murray-Boyles doesn't have the highest upside, he's a standout defender with sound basketball IQ that frequently finds him open on cuts and rolls to the rim. He won't be a focal point offensively but he's a quality role player who contributes to winning. Brooklyn needs more of those.No. 9 Toronto Raptors: Tre Johnson, GOriginal pick: Collin Murray-Boyles, FJohnson is not entirely blame for his inefficient rookie year. The Texas product didn't have quality point guard play for much of the season, and as result didn't get the open looks a perimeter scorer like him needs. Perhaps Trae Young helps elevate his game in Year 2, should Young decide to stay in D.C.No. 10 Houston Rockets: Cedric Coward, GOriginal pick: Khaman Maluach, C (traded to Phoenix Suns)Coward led a depleted Grizzlies team in points (13.6) and rebounds (5.9) as a rookie. He likely won't be asked to play such a prominent role again, but it's a positive sign he was able to immediately produce under the bright lights. He's a role player worth piecing around whatever young star the Grizzlies are able to land next.No. 11 Portland Trail Blazers: Kasparas Jakucionis, GOriginal pick: Cedric Coward, GJakucionis found sparse playing time behind Davion Mitchell and Dru Smith as a rookie. Still, he found his stroke as a 3-point shooter and flashed the playmaking ability to be Miami's point guard of the future. Jakucionis just needs to make strides as a defender and finisher around the rim.No. 12 Chicago Bulls: Maxime Raynaud, COriginal pick: Noa Essengue, FThe lowly Sacramento Kings needed somebody to produce down low in 2025-26, and Raynaud answered the call. The Frenchman averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds as a rookie. He showed nice touch around the rim and has a smooth jumper. He'll need to improve defensively to be a full-time starter in the NBA going forward, however.No. 13 Atlanta Hawks: Ryan Kalkbrenner, COriginal pick: Derik Queen, C (traded to Pelicans)Kalkbrenner had an outstanding rookie year for Charlotte. The second-round pick went 75% from the field and led the Hornets with 1.5 blocks per game. While he's 24 and not a great athlete, his 7-foot-2 frame provides value at the rim on both ends of the floor. He'll be a valuable backup for years to come.No. 14 San Antonio Spurs: Carter Bryant, FOriginal pick: Carter Bryant, FBryant sticks with the Spurs after becoming a trusted member of Mitch Johnson's rotation late in the regular season. He's in a great place for his skillset as a 3&D player. It wouldn't be shocking to see Bryant eventually take the role that won Keldon Johnson Sixth Man of the Year this past season. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Redrafting the 2025 NBA Draft lottery: 76ers pick Kon Knueppel over V.J. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrump’s gay niece says his “downward spiral” is becoming “impossible to hide”Donald Trump’s gay niece said on Sunday that her uncle’s mental health is in a “downward spiral.” Journalist Steven Beschloss asked Mary Trump about the president’s ragged appearance at the recent G7 summit. “He appeared bloated and wandering in a daze. He seemed genuinely out of it,” Beschloss said. Related Columnist mocks Trump for endless failed attempts to present himself as a strongman Mary Trump said she believes “this is simply the direction things are heading.” “He’s experiencing constant narcissistic injuries,” she said, “and nothing terrifies Donald more than humiliation. The problem for him is that nobody humiliates Donald more effectively than Donald humiliates himself.” Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today She sees her uncle, she said, as “psychologically exhausted” from using so much energy “protecting his fragile ego and trying to fill… the black hole of need within him.” “He’s still an empty, unloved man,” she said, adding that it’s “becoming impossible to hide” his fatigue from trying to appear confident. She also agreed with Beschloss that America’s allies no longer seem to be pretending Donald Trump is any sort of strongman. Beschloss pointed to a moment during the G7 summit when the president declared himself “the boss,” and folks in the room laughed. “Capitulating to Donald has always been the wrong strategy,” Mary Trump replied. “Now they’re finding ways to manage him instead.” They then began to discuss the significance of the 2026 midterms, and Mary Trump touted her new progressive PAC, Mary Trump’s Transcend PAC. “We launched it because this is our moment,” she said. “History shows that when things are darkest, opportunities for transformational change emerge.” She said she is vetting candidates with her wife, Ronda Cress, and they will announce their first endorsements in July. They are planning to start with 6-10. “The victories [against the GOP] must be overwhelming and unmistakable,” she emphasized. “We’re committed to directing as much money as possible toward candidates and causes while keeping overhead extremely low,” she said, noting that “this is not a short-term project.” “We’re thinking beyond 2032 because the dangers we face are deep and enduring.” The PAC states on its website that it is looking for candidates “who offer a transformative vision for America’s future, including: imposing real accountability for government corruption and criminality; taxing billionaires; regulating big tech and AI; advocating for real climate solutions; strengthening our civil rights protections; guaranteeing meaningful voter access and fair representation; reforming our institutions; increasing wages; and, rebuilding and fortifying our education, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure systems.” Beschloss called it “an ambitious agenda.” “It is,” Mary Trump replied. “People are struggling, and they deserve to know why. More importantly, they deserve to know that solutions exist.” The pair also chatted about the president’s reflecting pool project, a mess that Beschloss called “the perfect metaphor for this moment.” “The reflecting pool, now covered in green algae after a fourteen-million-dollar renovation that included floating blue paint and contractors connected to campaign finance scandals,” he said. Mary Trump wholeheartedly agreed. “Donald has turned yet another American institution into a swamp through incompetence, corruption, disregard for science, and preference for profit over the public good. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Jaylen Brown's name has been in trade rumors in the past, but this time feels different. The Boston Celtics want Giannis Antetokounmpo, and they're apparently willing to deal a package centered around Brown to make it happen. That's not just some outside noise about Brown's fit with Jayson Tatum. It's legitimate reporting from multiple outlets on the reality that Brown could be sent to the Milwaukee Bucks if the Bucks say yes to the offer. That raises a fascinating Brown dilemma, too -- if the Bucks take a different offer, how does Brown feel about having been shopped? If he's unhappy, the Portland Trail Blazers might be interested. That report came somewhat out of nowhere on Monday morning. This is what The Athletic's Sam Amick wrote:"League sources say the Portland Trail Blazers would have serious interest in Brown if the Celtics made him available," Amick wrote as part of a new article on Monday. "The Blazers have been among the suitors for Antetokounmpo since the February trade deadline but appear to be on the outside looking in at the moment."MORE: Celtics' Jaylen Brown trade offer for Giannis takes shapePortland is a proud franchise that hasn't quite put everything together in recent seasons, but they've got a lot of talent. There's enough youth and draft assets as potential appeals for Brown, but the Trail Blazers also have productive current players that could interest Boston, too. They could certainly assemble a fascinating package.Would Brown make sense in Portland? They are getting Damian Lillard back from injury for 2026-27 and are likely viewing themselves as a team that wants to contend. Brown would fit that goal.Any deal of Brown to Portland seems like it would need other dominoes to fall first, but just the concept itself is a fascinating one to emerge.More NBA news:Why Bucks trading Giannis before the draft makes senseThis is what a Timberwolves trade for Derrick White would look likeHow Grizzlies' Ja Morant trade depends on GiannisWarriors want Kawhi Leonard, but there's a problem0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAstros' Yordan Alvarez makes disappointing Home Run Derby decisionAstros' Yordan Alvarez makes disappointing Home Run Derby decision originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Houston Astros might not be having the best season overall, but Yordan Alvarez is putting together one of the best years of any slugger. He's surely going to make the AL All-Star team this season and will likely be the starting DH as well. But while Alvarez is likely to make the All-Star Game roster, will he participate in the Home Run Derby with his eye-catching power?Unfortunately, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Alvarez has made his decision, and he doesn't plan to participate in the derby this season.Astros' Yordan Alvarez will not participate in Home Run Derby"I'm still open," Alvarez said about participating in the Home Run Derby. "But not this year."While he might be open to participating in the derby some year, that isn't going to happen this season with the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. With Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park being the site of the derby in 2026, which is a hitter-friendly park, especially for lefties, it would've been very fun to see what he could do during the derby. But, he's passing on the chance to participate in the derby this season, despite being more than deserving to be a participant.MORE: Angles can demand more in trade for Reid Detmers than Tigers can for Tarik SkubalThis season, Alvarez has 25 homers with a .322 batting average and an MLB-best 1.067 OPS and 193 OPS+.He might not be the home-run leader, with Kyle Schwarber at 29 homers after four in two games against the New York Mets, but Alvarez's 25 homers lead all AL hitters, and he would be a top candidate for the derby. But, as this report from Rome notes, Alvarez is passing on the chance to participate in this season. It's a bit disappointing, as it would've been fun to see him compete for the Home Run Derby crown this season.More MLB news:Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani might not be able to pitch during MLB All-Star GamePhillies reportedly turn down Bryce Harper's outfield offer to help at trade deadlineTigers’ projected trade return for Tarik Skubal from Braves would be a top-100 prospect and moreGiants are 'pessimistic' they can trade Rafael Devers or Willy AdamesTwins' Byron Buxton trade update is bad news for Phillies, Braves0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOrioles' 1.72 ERA potential All-Star may 'vanish' before trade deadlineOrioles' 1.72 ERA potential All-Star may 'vanish' before trade deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Baltimore Orioles are not guaranteed to be sellers at this year's trade deadline. But if they are, one or a few of their top relievers could be switching uniforms in August. One of Baltimore's best arms out of the bullpen seemingly rose to dominance out of nowhere. Before this season, the right-hander was a journeyman who played for three teams in 2025, including the Orioles. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote that the 32-year-old could be a trade candidate, but there are concerns about how he can perform moving forward. "Through 30.2 innings pitched, [Rico] Garcia has a .123 BABIP against. This is patently absurd," Miller wrote. "Not only did he enter this season with a career BABIP against of .308, but in MLB history, the lowest recorded BABIP in a single season of at least 30 innings pitched was Alex Vesia's .143 mark in 2021." For those unaware, BABIP stands for batting average on balls in play. It appears Garcia, the Orioles reliever in question, may be getting lucky on the mound. Garcia allowed just one hit in the first 19 innings of the season. That's clearly unstanable and was bound to change. Still, he's allowing just 3.7 hits per nine innings. MORE: How Pirates lost on maddening interference call for final out vs. Rockies"Furthermore, Garcia had a 5.27 ERA and zero saves in 70 career innings pitched in the majors prior to 2026. At least when Fernando Rodney randomly had that 0.60 ERA age-35 campaign in 2012, he had been a high-leverage, occasionally successful pitcher in the past," Miller added. "Garcia, on the other hand, appeared out of the blue in his 30s and might vanish just as suddenly." Should the Orioles be worried about possible regression? Chances are, yes, they should. Garcia's trade value may never be higher. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM4 NBA stars who could be traded during draft, including Spurs' De'Aaron FoxThe 2026 NBA Draft has arrived, giving at least 60 young players their start at the highest level of professional basketball. It could also lead to some established NBA stars shifting allegiances. As the first significant chapter of the offseason, the NBA Draft is a prime opportunity for teams to get ahead of some roster changes they're anticipating when free agency opens on July 6.Could we be in for another league-shifting trade on draft night? Let's take a look at some potential targets.De'Aaron Fox, San Antonio SpursFox had a brutal NBA Finals while Dylan Harper, the franchise's future at point guard, outplayed him for much of San Antonio's playoff run. The former Sacramento Kings star is under contract for the next four seasons with an average salary of $55.4 million, so moving him won't be easy. However, the two-time All-Star is only 28 and has elite athletic traits, so perhaps a team like the Houston Rockets could covet him.Jimmy Butler, Golden State WarriorsButler's title-chasing opportunity with the Golden State Warriors got cut short by a torn ACL he suffered in January. His return for the 2026-27 season remains uncertain, increasing the urgency for Golden State to make a move around 38-year-old Stephen Curry. The Warriors could look to deal Butler's expiring $56.8 million contract for a couple role players who could help fill out a roster that's gotten stale over the years, particularly in the backcourt.Paul George, Philadelphia 76ersIt's been largely a disastrous run for George in Philadelphia. He's played only 78 games over the last two seasons due to injuries and an anti-drug suspension, collecting over $100 million in the process. With the 76ers beginning to build around younger stars Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe, it doesn't make much sense to hold onto George and even Joel Embiid. However, with George signed through 2027-28, a deal may be hard to find unless Philadelphia is willing to attach player or draft capital.Kawhi Leonard, Los Angeles ClippersThe Clippers have been consistently good but not good enough with Leonard leading the way. Leonard has an expiring $50.3 million contract that should be relatively easy to move, barring any league punishment over the Aspiration scandal that's been clouding the franchise. If the Miami Heat strike out on Giannis Antetokounmpo, perhaps they go after Leonard, whose two-way ability is exactly what Erik Spoelstra values most. This article originally appeared on For The Win: 4 NBA stars who could be traded during draft, including Spurs' De'Aaron Fox0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση
