MLB Commissioner: Giants botched Pride Night cap guidance, leaving players unclear on opt-out
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a letter to Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley that the San Francisco Giants failed to properly explain to players that they were allowed to decline to wear rainbow-themed caps during the club's annual Pride Night earlier this month.Several members of the Giants, including starting pitcher Landen Roupp, added Bible verses to the themed cap, prompting a warning from the league that writing on the caps is a violation of league policy.RELATED: SF Giants players draw backlash after writing Bible verses on Pride Night capsHawley penned a letter to Manfred in which he expressed "grave concern” over the warning to the players. Hawley called the warning “dubious” because he feels MLB is already promoting a political viewpoint by having Pride-themed uniforms.Hawley posted Manfred's response to his letter on social media Monday..@MLB Commissioner writes to me and admits they were wrong to threaten the Giants players over Bible verses and promises never to fine or discipline these players - or any players for their religious beliefs pic.twitter.com/rnPy2F7fyR— Josh Hawley (@HawleyMO) June 22, 2026In it, Manfred noted that because some players aren't comfortable wearing Pride-themed uniforms or caps, the league adopted a policy in 2023 of prohibiting clubs from using special uniforms, caps or equipment in their celebration days except under very narrow circumstances, such as special patches honoring deceased members of the baseball community. That same year, the Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have some of the largest LGBTQ+ communities in the U.S., were granted an exemption from the new rule and were permitted use of pride emblems on caps and uniforms on Pride Night “provided that no players or uniformed staff would be required to wear them, and that the team would speak to the players to make sure they were comfortable with the apparel.”RELATED: 'Trump won': VP JD Vance criticizes Giants' Pride Night controversy, Sen. Scott Wiener responds“Unfortunately, this year the Giants' communication with players was inadequate and not clear,” Manfred wrote in his letter to Hawley. "Some players apparently did not understand that they had the option to wear their normal uniform and elected to add messages to their hats bearing the pride logo as a result.“The Giants players were allowed to wear the hats with biblical references for the entire game. After the game had concluded, my office issued a routine oral warning about the uniform policy violation — unfortunately, it was issued before we became aware of the Giants' lapse in communication,” Manfred added. “The players were neither fined nor disciplined, nor will they ever be.”

College basketball insider reveals how modern era impacted Dusty May decision to leave Michigan for NBA
Months after cutting down the nets as a national champion, Dusty May left Michigan for the NBA. He is taking over as the Dallas Mavericks’ head coach in a move that made waves across college basketball.May is the first sitting college coach to take an NBA job since John Beilein did so in 2019 when he left Michigan to become the Cleveland Cavaliers’ head coach. That means it’s the first such move since NIL and the transfer portal became parts of the landscape, and CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander said the modern era played a role in May’s decision.During his time in Ann Arbor, May spoke about the challenges coaches face in the new era. In fact, he recently said he didn’t “feel like a national champion” because of how quickly the staff had to pivot to the transfer portal. While Norlander said May had the mentality to navigate the ever-changing space, the lack of clarity and “guardrails” was a key part of the move to Dallas."I spoke to a source close to Dusty May … it IS the college environment that is pushing him to this decision."College Basketball Insider @MattNorlander reveals what really led to Dusty May leaving college hoops for the NBA. pic.twitter.com/4ZewhwxbZc— CBS Sports College Basketball (@CBSSportsCBB) June 22, 2026“Spoke to a source close to Dusty May just a short while ago and it is the college environment that is pushing him to this decision,” Norlander said Monday after the news broke. “It’s not an easy one. It’s an extremely difficult one. He met with Dallas on Saturday when they made their final pitch and, essentially, offered him the job. He took all day Sunday to make that decision. Decided late last night that yes, indeed, it will be the case that he is going to take the Dallas job.[ $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage ]“… But ultimately, the state of college sports and where things are with a lack of guardrails and a lack of, like, really true, firm infrastructure is a major catalyst – in addition to the obvious. If you’ve got the chance to coach an NBA franchise and the Dallas Mavericks. Cooper Flagg could prove to be one of the five best players in the NBA by the end of his rookie contract, potentially. Then, why wouldn’t you take a swing at that if offered the opportunity?”Matt Norlander ‘not surprised’ Dusty May left for NBADuring his two years at Michigan after leaving Florida Atlantic, Dusty May helped spearhead a historic turnaround. The Wolverines went 64-13 overall record during his time at the helm, including a 37-3 record during the 2025-26 season. That ended in Indianapolis with the program’s second-ever national championship. However, rumors swirled around May and the NBA throughout the offseason. Although he agreed to a contract extension at Michigan, he reportedly did not sign it. Still, Matt Norlander cited a previous conversation with May about NBA aspirations and said the feeling was he would go to the league at some point. To do so soon after winning a title, though, was part of the reason it was such a surprise.“Did we think we were going to get to the point where he was taking an NBA job in 2026? No,” Norlander said. “But I did think that if he was going to be able to keep Michigan consistently relevant, a Top-10 team, I thought we’d be here in this spot next year because I think Michigan under Dusty May would have been one of the best teams in the country, obviously. So I’m not surprised to see this. These are champagne problems, let me be clear about this.SUBSCRIBE to the On3 NIL and Sports Business Newsletter“It’s just not easy being a head coach of a power conference program, football or men’s basketball, women’s basketball, in college sports these days. There’s just so much that comes with it. Now, some coaches are better equipped and wired to handle it than others. Dusty May is equipped and wired to handle it, but you’re trading one set of problems for another by taking a crack and taking a swing at going to the NBA. So I’m not surprised whatsoever.”

Brady Tkachuk introduced by Florida Panthers, discusses the trade to his brother's team
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Brady Tkachuk was in the stands with his family when the Florida Panthers won Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025, and he couldn't help but wonder what the moment felt like down on the ice.If the Panthers win another Cup anytime soon, he'll find out.Matthew Tkachuk's brother got his formal introductory news conference from the Panthers on Tuesday, two days after Florida landed him in a trade with the Ottawa Senators, and it was clear that sharing a locker room with his older sibling — who is about to enter his fifth year with the club — is part of the excitement surrounding this move. But it's not just the family ties that attracted Brady Tkachuk to Florida. He simply thinks this is the best place for him now.“To be a part of a Stanley Cup-winning team is something that has always been my motivation and they have the pedigree," Brady Tkachuk said. “Every time playing them, and after the game, it’s all about winning. There’s nothing about individuals or individual success. The sole focus in here is about excellence. And they’ve shown the last bunch of years of how excellent of a team they are and their sole focus is a Stanley Cup.”Brady Tkachuk — who was Ottawa's captain and expressed plenty of appreciation toward the Senators for what he learned in his eight years with that franchise — could join one of the deepest groups of forwards in the NHL.The presumed other eight top forwards on Florida's depth chart going into next season — Matthew Tkachuk, Aleksander Barkov, Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, Sam Reinhart, Eetu Luostarinen, Anton Lundell and Carter Verhaeghe — have combined for more than 1,800 goals and nearly 2,500 assists in their careers. “I know how I felt being on the other end of it, going against the depth that they have,” Brady Tkachuk said. "And every line, it's a worry out there that they can take over a game on any given night. It’s not just the forwards. It's the whole entire team. They're such difference-makers ... just an unbelievable team and I’m excited to just get to know the guys and be part of this group."Panthers hockey operations president and general manager Bill Zito, upon hearing that answer, even pointed out that in certain scenarios Brady Tkachuk could find himself on a third line in Florida. His newest acquisition nodded in approval — knowing he's going to be surrounded by tons of talent.“That fan part of me, I'm so excited just to watch the hockey,” Zito said. “It's going to be a lot of fun.”The trade went down on Sunday, a day when the family was gathered for the baptism of Matthew Tkachuk's daughter and with their father, Keith Tkachuk, about to reveal another surprise — that he had finally been selected for induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.A big day for the family, a big day for the team. “When a player of Brady’s stature, ability, and most importantly, character becomes available, you do what you can to try to acquire players like that and fit them into the group,” Zito said. “When we had talked on the phone, I said, ‘It’s like a jigsaw puzzle and you’re the piece that fits into the puzzle.’ And at the same time, it’s the perfect puzzle to fit around that piece. I believe that.”___AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl

Iowa High School Sports Association clears eighth graders for varsity eligibility. What it means
The Iowa high school sports landscape is changing, as eighth graders will soon be able to begin their high school athletic careers a year early. The changes come after the Iowa State Board of Education approved emergency rules on June 18. The rules will take effect Aug. 1, ahead of the 2026-27 school year. The new rule is intended to increase participation in certain sports, particularly at smaller schools across the state. "I think what we may see is schools being able to field JV teams, freshman teams that they haven't been able to field before," said Tom Keating, executive director of the Iowa High School Sports Association. "It gives kids a little bit more opportunity to play developmentally. Instead of sitting on the bench maybe in a varsity uniform, they get a chance to play at a lower level."Although Keating and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Executive Director Erin Gerlich were involved in the passage of House Bill 2591, they met with the Board of Education before the emergency rules were drafted and provided input. Now, it's their job to help schools prepare for this change."Our role now is to help our schools navigate this," Keating said. "It's just important for us to help our schools get comfortable with it and get in a position where they feel like they can implement it."Under current rules, eighth graders are already eligible to try out for varsity baseball and softball teams because both sports take place during the summer. School districts will have the option to adopt the policy, but they will not be required to do so. Right now, schools are simply trying to understand the new rules and how it might impact their programs, or even the junior high schools in their areas. "There's a lot of anxiety because there are a lot of unknowns," said Keating. "Once the unknowns become known, things will calm down and the anxiety kind of subsides a little bit and people feel a little more comfortable with the implementation and how to navigate it."Iowa is far from the first state to adopt this policy. There are 24 other states who currently allow eighth graders to compete on high school teams. Keating said he has already sought advice from athletic administrators in those states. The best advice he's received?"Start small," said Keating. "Don't try to swallow the whale. Take it, take it one step at a time. You'll learn as you go along where you can open things up and where where you can provide more opportunities."To help schools understand the change, Keating and Gerlich have created a Q&A document and scheduled a webinar with athletic directors to explain the new rules and help schools make informed decisions. The emergency rules mark the beginning of a new era of Iowa high school sports, but the process is far from complete."The rules that were passed on the 18th may change," said Keating. "But for now, they are what they are."This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Iowa High School Sports Association clears eighth graders for varsity participation

Falcons secure offensive core, extend Kyle Pitts through 2029
Falcons secure offensive core, extend Kyle Pitts through 2029 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Atlanta Falcons have made it clear that tight end Kyle Pitts remains a cornerstone of their future, agreeing to a three-year, $54 million contract extension that keeps the former first-round pick in Atlanta for years to come.According to Pitts’ agency, the deal carries an average annual value of $18 million, making him the third-highest-paid tight end in the NFL behind George Kittle ($19.1 million annually) and Trey McBride ($19 million annually). The extension comes five years after the Falcons selected Pitts with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, making him the highest-drafted tight end in league history. While questions about his long-term future surfaced earlier this offseason, Atlanta ultimately chose to invest heavily in one of its most dynamic offensive playmakers.Pitts is coming off one of the best seasons of his NFL career. He finished the 2025 season with career highs in receptions (88) and targets (118) while totaling 928 receiving yards and five touchdowns across 17 games. His 88 catches ranked 10th among NFL players, and his 928 receiving yards led all Falcons pass catchers. The 25-year-old also became just the second tight end in franchise history to lead Atlanta in receiving yards in multiple seasons, joining former Pro Bowl tight end Alge Crumpler. Pitts previously surpassed 1,000 receiving yards as a rookie in 2021 and rebounded in 2025 after several injury-affected seasons.Falcons make long-term investment Atlanta’s decision to extend Pitts continues a trend of locking up its young offensive stars. Earlier this offseason, the Falcons signed wide receiver Drake London to a lucrative long-term extension, signaling the organization’s commitment to building around its core playmakers. With Pitts, London, running back Bijan Robinson, and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. forming the nucleus of the offense, the Falcons believe they have the foundation necessary to compete in the NFC for years to come. Now, after years of speculation surrounding his future, Pitts has both the financial security and organizational backing to continue establishing himself among the NFL’s elite tight ends.More NFL news:A.J. Brendan Sorsby could have one long shot option left: Junior College Football
After the NFL dealt Brendan Sorsby a devastating setback, his path to professional football appears to lead only to the 2027 NFL Draft. With no supplemental draft scheduled for 2026 and Sorsby no longer part of the Texas Tech Red Raiders football program, his options are limited. His attorney could pursue legal action against the NFL, but that route appears unlikely to gain traction. One long-shot alternative would be for Sorsby to continue playing in 2026 through junior college football, commonly known as JUCO football.Often referred to as “Last Chance” football, JUCO is not entirely outside the realm of possibility. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) governs junior college athletics separately from the NCAA, with the exception of California schools, which fall under the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).MORE: NFL decision on supplemental draft leaves Brendan Sorsby out of options for 2026There is precedent for players turning to JUCO after their college careers hit major obstacles. Cam Newton, for example, enrolled at a junior college after Florida dismissed him from the program. He later transferred to Auburn, where he won the Heisman Trophy and led the Tigers to a national championship.Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby (2) runs the ball to the end zone for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a NCAA men’s football game between the Cincinnati Bearcats and Baylor Bears, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati. Bearcats won 41-20.How Sorsby Could Play JUCO — But It’s a Long ShotAfter the NCAA denied Sorsby’s eligibility and the NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft, JUCO remains a slim possibility. To pursue that path, Sorsby would likely need to apply for and receive eligibility clearance from the NJCAA. Even then, the odds appear long, as the organization would need to evaluate his eligibility in light of his previous NCAA participation. The NJCAA would also have to consider the circumstances surrounding his NCAA bylaw violations related to gambling activity. Newton’s situation differed significantly because Florida dismissed him from the program, but his NCAA eligibility was not permanently voided. Sorsby, by contrast, lost his eligibility due to violations of established NCAA bylaws.MORE: Big 12 may not be done in court with Texas TechIf the NJCAA were to deny him eligibility, Sorsby could still choose to pursue legal action. Given the legal challenges already surrounding his case, that outcome would not be surprising.Nov 29, 2025; Fort Worth, Texas, USA; Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby (2) runs with the ball during the game between the Horned Frogs and the Bearcats at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn ImagesSorsby’s Other OptionsAccording to his attorney, Sorsby is currently evaluating potential legal remedies involving the NFL. In practice, however, that would be an uphill battle. The NFL can point to established policies and precedent supporting its position, making a successful challenge difficult.Beyond legal action, Sorsby could explore opportunities in leagues such as the UFL or Arena Football One. Neither option would allow him to play during the 2026 season because their schedules have already concluded. However, if maintaining football activity before the 2027 NFL Draft becomes a priority, those leagues could still provide a path forward. At the end of the day, Sorsby made several gambles—not only with the wagers that led to his suspension, but also with his football career. Had he accepted the NCAA’s ruling rather than continuing to challenge it, he may have improved his chances of receiving consideration for a supplemental draft. Now, Sorsby must deal with the consequences of those decisions.

New Bills stadium delivers on the hype, brings the wow factor
ORCHARD PARK - The price tag to build the new Highmark Stadium, right around $2.2 billion at last check, made it the most expensive construction project in Western New York history.Having taken a tour Tuesday morning following the pomp and circumstance of the official ribbon cutting, the place looks exactly like you’d expect for something that cost $2.2 billion.Spectacular is the word that comes to mind, and while everything is going to be much more expensive for fans compared to the old place which is in the process of getting torn down across Abbott Road, no one is going to be disappointed with the experiences they are about to have.Bills new stadium makes an immediate impression“It's awesome,” said former Bills quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly who was on hand for the ceremony where New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, team owner Terry Pegula, and former owner Ralph Wilson’s wife, Mary, were among those who simultaneously cut the ribbon which declared the building open.“I've been in here three or four times now,” Kelly continued, “and I've gotten to walk in the locker room, I've been in there and it's amazing and I can't wait for opening day. Even though you know they're going to have a couple of preseason games here, I can't wait to see them open up on Sept. 17th.”Tuesday began with a media tour of the building, followed by speeches from the dignitaries, the ribbon cutting, media interviews, and then a food and beverage party in one of the main hospitality areas in the lower concourse which was attended by hundreds of invited guests.Inside the vision behind the Bills new Highmark StadiumOne man who was not seated at the main dais was former Bills linebacker Scott Radecic who, after his playing career ended turned to architecture and became a founding partner and global director of Populous, the world’s leading architecture firm specializing in sports and entertainment venues and the one Pegula chose to build the stadium.Radecic played for Penn State’s national championship team in 1982, then entered the NFL as a second-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1984 draft. After three seasons he joined the Bills in 1987 where he played three years before finishing his career playing six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.Almost from the moment Radecic took on the Highmark Stadium project, he knew the place was going to be special. During his speech Tuesday, Pegula recalled traveling to London where he visited Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and once he saw it, he asked Radecic, “Can you build me this?”So Radecic did and looking at the finished product, you could see the pride he had, given the significant role he played in designing it.“I’m in my 35th year now of doing this, there have been lots of really magical projects, and some have been for former teams whether it's been for Penn State or for the Indianapolis Colts,” Radecic said. “But this has got to be one of my top projects to be able to deliver a brand new building, for Populous, to the people of Western New York.“To come back to a team that I used to play with and be a part of what that future fan experience is going to be, knowing that the stadium will help to create moments and experiences, create memories that young people will have with their mom and dad, grandma, grandpa and all that type of stuff, it's really extraordinary. It's an extraordinary building, it's as good as anything in the world, and it's right here in Orchard Park, New York.”Bills players get upgraded spaces built for advantageObviously, giving the fans every possible amenity is a big priority, but as a former player, Radecic pays special attention to the needs of the players whenever he builds a stadium and he is thrilled to deliver work spaces that will give the Bills a true homefield advantage.“I remember playing here in 40-degree rain and the minute you go out onto the field early just to warm up, and you get on the ground, next thing you know you're wet,” he said. “So we have designed as part of the home team locker room, the largest home team warm-up area of any stadium in the National Football League.“And the reason we did that was on those extreme days, you want to make sure that every player has done all their warm-up to their best so that when they come on the field, they're ready to play. We didn't want the weather or the grass or the wet or anything like that to be any type of a negative influence on not being prepared.”The area is big enough for Josh Allen to throw 50-yard passes, and there are exercise spaces, hot and cold tanks, sauna and steam rooms, and, “Anything that a player needs for the before game warm-up or the after-game recovery, and I feel like some of that has come from those experiences I had of being in those 40-degree rainy days and remembering what that was like and thinking, ‘How do we make sure that every player is always going to be prepared, no matter what the weather conditions are?’”Kelly, who was one of the Bills’ star players during Radecic’s tenure here, said he loved the fact that the Bills are going to a grass field which, Radecic said, is a hybrid bluegrass mixture that thrives in this climate “and will hold up well.” And having been down on the field late last week at a time when the wind was howling in Orchard Park, the same storm that caused power outages in the region, Kelly said, “The last time I walked out on the field it was pretty windy outside, and I felt nothing but a breeze. Who wouldn’t want to play in that?”Bills stadium design focuses on fan comfort and accessThe hospitality areas are as you would expect in a 21st-century new build venue - they are over-the-top luxurious with every creature comfort imaginable. But the ordinary fan who will be sitting out in the main seating bowl and not in a suite with exclusive access to clubs will be pampered as well. The open-air concourses are wide, easily navigable and contain ambient heating fixtures that will lessen winter’s frigid bite late in the season. The concession areas are ample, and there are numerous self-serve places where you can swipe a credit card to gain access to certain food items and beverages and help yourself without having to wait in line to check out.“The way we designed the concourses, we've put all the amenities on the outer perimeter so that as you walk any of the concourses, you can just turn your head and you can see the field so you're always connected,” Radecic said.“The old stadium, once you left the seating bowl you could not see the field. We wanted to give everybody who's in the building, no matter where they are in the building, give them that connection to the field of play, to a scoreboard, to a video board, to something. And no matter where you are, you have that experience. And I think that's just going to be a game changer for people over the next couple of decades.”Bills prioritize sound and connectivity over giant screensOne thing fans will notice is that the main video boards above each end zone are not humongous as say, places like Los Angeles, Dallas and even Baltimore. John Polka, vice president of stadium development, said that was by design because the Bills want their fans engaged with the game rather than staring up at the JumboTron. The bigger priority was to install the very best sound system, plus make sure WiFi connectivity was premium level. The regular seats seem just a little snug, especially for a heavier person, but the leg room seems improved from the old stadium which will make egress and ingress easier when you need to leave your seat. Also, the height and verticality of the stadium is a stark difference from the old stadium, and that means that even fans sitting in the upper deck will feel like they’re hovering over the field.“Think about the intimacy of the seating bowl, it feels like you're walking into the old Roman Colosseum,” Radecic said. “Everybody's on top, it's vertically on top of (the visiting team) and it's really intimidating.“We're in an outdoor stadium but this building is going to help keep people just a little warmer and just a little drier than they've ever been for the last 50 years. It's really just a magnificent building for a great fan base and we're excited for them to come in and start to enjoy it.”Sal Maiorana has covered the Buffalo Bills for more than four decades including 37 years as the full-time beat writer/columnist for the D&C. Guardians fall in power rankings as offense misses its star bats
Guardians fall in power rankings as offense misses its star bats originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. While the Cleveland Guardians have been near or at the top of the division all season long, they lost some big pieces a little over a week ago. During the June 13 game against the Detroit Tigers, the Guardians lost Jose Ramirez to a fractured left hamate bone, Angel Martinez to a fractured left foot, and Chase DeLauter after he fractured a rib. Last week was the first time this club was without all three, and it certainly showed. They struggled to get much of anything going, but they were up against some stiff competition. MORE: Rockies' 'intriguing' trade candidate is perfect deadline target for GuardiansGuardians fall in power rankings as offense misses its starsThe Guardians faced the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers earlier in the week. They could only muster one win in the three-game series on the road, moving on to another road matchup against the Houston Astros. It was the same result here as well, as Cleveland could only grab one win, making for a losing week. With this, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter has bumped them down a few spots, from No. 8 to No. 11 in his latest power rankings. "The Guardians lost Jose Ramirez, Chase DeLauter and Angel Ramirez all to injury two weeks ago, and their first week without them in the lineup did not go well. They scored 21 runs in six games, with eight of those coming in Saturday's win over the Astros."The offense has surely taken a hit, and while they woke up a bit on Monday in the first of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox, who they are neck-and-neck with in the division, they still lost 6-5. They will look to get that back on Tuesday before returning home to take on the Seattle Mariners, who have also fallen a few spots in the rankings after a .500 week. These hospice nuns have no trans patients. Trump’s still helping them fight a trans-inclusive law.
President Donald Trump’s Justice Department has joined a lawsuit filed by an extremist religious freedom organization on behalf of nuns at a Catholic hospice in New York, challenging a state law requiring nursing facilities to affirm their patients’ gender identities. The suit was filed in April by Colorado law firm First & Fourteenth, which is currently co-counsel with the Christian nationalist organization First Liberty Institute on another “religious discrimination” case in a U.S. District Court in Colorado. Related Religious law firm convinces nuns to sue state over trans-inclusive law “The sisters do not want to litigate. They want this resolved, and they want to focus on their ministry,” L. Martin Nussbaum said in April as the lawyer spearheading the suit in the nuns’ name (despite their stated desire to stay out of court). The Dominican Sisters operate a 42-bed end-of-life care facility called Rosary Hill Home in Westchester County. According to the nuns, patients at their cancer hospice are typically under their care for two to three months — they know they are dying when they arrive. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Assistant Attorney General for the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, Harmeet K. Dhillon, said in a statement announcing the department’s participation in the lawsuit. “States should take notice that they cannot require Americans to abandon their religious beliefs in the name of woke gender ideology,” she said. “For more than a century, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne have provided free palliative care to indigent [very poor] cancer patients in their last days,” said the head of the DOJ division that Trump has weaponized in his anti-trans crusade. “New York’s law would force these religious women to choose between their faith and their license if they wish to continue serving the dying.” That choice seems to have been imposed on the nuns by the preemptively filed lawsuit. The law in question — The Long-Term Care Facility Residents’ Bill of Rights for LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers and People Living with HIV, signed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) in 2023 — mandates that long-term care facilities in New York give patients access to bathrooms, hospital beds, and other amenities that align with their gender identities. No complaint has been filed against the sisters over the law, the state has not taken any action against them, and the nuns maintain they’re never cared for a transgender patient. In April, the sisters applied for an exemption to the law, but did not hear back immediately. At least one religious exemption has been provided by New York’s Department of Health, which administers the law, to the Church of Christ Scientist over the same concerns. Despite those facts, First & Fourteenth convinced the sisters to sue, characterizing the state health department’s explanations of the law as formal “warnings” that the sisters were breaching it. In an interview with the National Catholic Register publicizing the case, First & Fourteenth’s Nussbaum said one health department letter accused the sisters of refusing “to assign a room to a resident other than in accordance with the resident’s gender identity,” denying a trans resident use of a bathroom that aligned with their gender identity, and “willfully and repeatedly” failing to use a resident’s preferred name or pronouns. A state agency website, however, shows zero complaints against the Rosary Hill Home, and Nussbaum himself admits the sisters have never had trans people that they know of in their care, even as the Catholic Church says that any such people would need to be treated with respect and compassion.“We don’t even have such patients,” Nussbaum said in the sisters’ name. “It’s the state requiring these holy nuns to bend the knee to an ideology contrary to their faith.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Scotland and its Tartan Army eye historic World Cup breakthrough against five-time champion Brazil
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Andy Robertson and his Scotland teammates have watched their fans march through the streets of Miami and Boston, celebrating baseball games with beers and bagpipes as if they were attending a soccer match.Scotland wants to give the Tartan Army much more to celebrate on Wednesday, when it faces Brazil in a World Cup match at the home stadium of the NFL's Miami Dolphins. The team knows it won't be an easy task.“Everywhere they go, people fall in love with them,” Robertson said. “You've seen how much the whole of the city of Boston fell in love with the Tartan Army. I think they're gutted to know they've left. Now obviously they've come down to Miami to try and make the same impact. And I think they've had that same impact, obviously, at the baseball (game) again last night walking through the streets and everything."Come tomorrow night. If we manage to beat Brazil ... I'm sure maybe a couple of beers will be drunk by the Tartan Army. That's for sure.”Scotland is hoping to qualify for the knockout stage at the World Cup for the first time following eight previous group-stage exits. The Scots got off to a good start to their first World Cup in 28 years, beating Haiti 1-0 in their opener for their first win on soccer's biggest stage since 1990.Following a 1-0 loss to Morocco, Scotland is third in Group C with three points, needing a draw or potentially a narrow loss against Brazil to make it out of the group stage.“When it comes to the game, we are in control of our own destiny at the minute,” Robertson said. “We've still got a game to play. We've already got three points. What we know is if we get a result tomorrow, we'll be 100% through. So we have to focus on that.”Brazil forward Neymar could potentially return from a right calf injury for the match, but Robertson said getting through the juggernaut squad will be tough regardless of who suits up.“It's not really if we want to face Neymar. If we want to face Vinícius Júnior. If we want to face Endrick. If we want to face (Gabriel) Martinelli,” Robertson said. “I could go on and name every player on the Brazil squad. They have so much quality. We just have to prepare and try to play the best we can because we know they have quality on every single possession. And we know if they have to make substitutions, they have quality.”Scotland has never beaten Brazil in 10 meetings and is winless in eight previous World Cup matches against South American opponents. Brazil has lost only one of its last 16 World Cup group matches against European teams.Scotland coach Steve Clarke grew up admiring Brazil after watching the dominance of the 1970 team featuring Pelé. He noted he's excited to face the powerhouse that he grew to love.“But tomorrow night,” Clarke said, "we have to not love Brazil and love Scotland more."___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/FIFA-World-Cup

William Eklund trade grades: Who won Sharks and Senators deal?
In a week full of some crazy NHL deals -- see the Brady Tkachuk trade and the big Simon Nemec swap -- we've got another one: talented young winger William Eklund is being shipped to the Ottawa Senators. The San Jose Sharks are getting at top-10 pick back in the swap at Friday's 2026 NHL Draft. WOW.It's an intriguing deal on both sides as the Sharks continue to build around a young core that includes Maclin Celebrini and Will Smith, but what about Eklund? Apparently, he wasn't in the cards. So who won this deal? What are the details? As always, let's break it down and hand out grades to the Sharks and Senators:Senators and Sharks trade detailsSharks get: 2026 first-round draft pick (No. 9 overall)Senators get: F William Eklund, F Kasper Halttunen and C Brandon SvobodaSenators trade gradeWOW. Ottawa loses Brady Tkachuk and replaces him with a player who feels like one with more room to grow. Eklund comes off back-to-back 50-point seasons, and he'll be 24 this year after he was the seventh overall pick in 2021. Maybe the Sens don't feel they're going to get a win-now player at No. 9, so they went with a young, emerging talent instead and filled up the farm team with Halttunen (not a top prospect) and Svoboda. But the focus here is Eklund. If he can fully reach his potential, this will be a pretty good trade... as long as the No. 9 pick isn't a game-changer. GRADE: B+Sharks trade gradeHmmm. Was Eklund and his $5.6 million AAV too much for a player who maybe isn't living up to his potential? And maybe the No. 9 pick is a cheaper way to fill his spot? That's my thinking here. Perhaps it's freeing up cap space to make a run at some vets to help the Sharks take the next step. I just was surprised the franchise gave up on Eklund. But if they become a postseason team for the first time in years, it'll be worth it. GRADE: BThis article originally appeared on For The Win: William Eklund trade grades for Sharks and Senators deal

NCAA approves landmark five-year eligibility rule
In a move that stands to change the foundation of college sports as fans know it, the NCAA approved an age-based eligibility model that will put a hard cap on the amount of time student-athletes can compete in collegiate athletics. The new system implements a five-year eligibility window, which starts either upon full-time enrollment at a university or the start of the academic year after a student-athlete's 19th birthday, whichever comes first.Reports indicate that while there will be exceptions, they will be limited to circumstances like religious missions, maternity leave and military service. Redshirting will essentially no longer be part of the college sports landscape under the new rules, which are expected to be confirmed during the final day of the Division I Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.NCAA DI Cabinet has unanimously voted to adopt the age-based eligibility policy, sources tell @YahooSports - a historic moment.Policy starts an athlete’s clock upon (1) initial enrollment in college or (2) start of academic year after 19th birthday (whichever occurs earlier).— Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) June 23, 2026The new eligibility rule is expected to be applicable to incoming freshmen. Josh Hokit refuses to back down from controversial Michelle Obama comments in first interview after UFC Freedom 250
Josh Hokit made plenty of noise — as usual — after his win over Derrick Lewis at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House. But rather than his performance gaining attention, it was Hokit's post-fight interview that garnered headlines in the days after the event.Known for his brash character work and controversial interviews, the heavyweight contender initially appeared to speak without a persona following his second-round stoppage of Lewis. That was, until he closed out his in-cage interview with Joe Rogan by calling the former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, “a man.”Speaking Tuesday on "The Ariel Helwani Show" in his first interview since the fight, in a rare appearance as himself rather than a character, Hokit declined to apologize and said he has no regrets about the comments he made on UFC's arguable biggest platform ever."I thought I was giving her a compliment," Hokit told Uncrowned. "Michelle Obama, being a man, that's like, she knows how to deal with adversity. She knows how to work hard like a man; when the times get tough, the tough keep going."I thought it was a perfect opportunity to show the world how great this country is with the freedom of speech. You can go somewhere and you say something like that, and you die. And I'm not suicidal, by the way; I'm in good spirits. I'm a little under the weather right now, but other than that, I'm good. And so in other parts of the world, you say something like that, and you're not here to speak to Ariel Helwani, you know?"Hokit, 28, hasn't been shy to trash-talk anyone and everyone since arriving in the UFC late last year. Considering the large viewership UFC Freedom 250 figures released by Paramount, and the attention the event drew as a White House spectacle, Hokit's latest remark generated his most blowback yet. But that doesn't mean he regrets it."There's a certain side that pokes at another side and there's no outrage there. And so I thought it was a perfect time to take a jab," Hokit said."That's one thing about my career. I’m never going to — I think I was watching a [Henry] Cejudo video and he was like, ‘That’s one thing I regret, is all the stuff I did [to promote fights].’ Or you hear people backtrack — even the [Sean] Strickland post-fight speech [after the Khamzat Chimaev fight], where he was like, 'I'm trying to sell the fight, and I don't mean the things I say.' You'll never hear me backtrack from what I say."UFC CEO Dana White was among the many voices to condemn Hokit's comment. White called the remarks “nasty” and “nonsense” the morning after UFC Freedom 250, then echoed those thoughts again Saturday after UFC Vegas 119, distancing himself from Hokit's "disgusting" remark but also reiterating that White believes in free speech.Ultimately, Hokit has become a top UFC contender at heavyweight despite the controversy, extending his undefeated promotional record to 4-0 with his latest win. Hokit said 2026 has already been a million-dollar year for him in the UFC and that neither White nor UFC CBO Hunter Campbell reached out to him about his post-fight comments. As for everyone else, he's not concerned. If Hokit had made a remark like that in his past life while on the NFL's San Francisco 49ers practice squad, he knows he wouldn't have expected to keep his spot on the roster."That's why I respect [White] so much," Hokit said. "That's why I wanted to fight in the UFC, because you got bosses like that. If I would have said that in the NFL, I don't have a job anymore. That's why I respect them so much. Yeah, they could always feel some type of way, I respect their opinions, but we do got freedom of speech. So it is what it is. I don't like what other people say, but I’ve got to deal with it, I’ve got to live with it.""At the end of the day, I don't care [if anyone's upset]. Now, I'm not trying to piss off the Dana Whites and Hunter Campbells. But they would also message me if they really felt like a certain way. They could comment and stuff like that, but if they really felt a type of way, they would message me. All the other people, they weren't there when I was down. They weren't there when I was broken. So, I could care less what anybody thinks. I'm here to make a splash and back up my words. If anybody feels some type of way, they know where to find me."

Kyle Pitts, Falcons agree to new 3-year deal

(Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Atlanta Falcons polarizing 2021 draft pick is here to stay. Kyle Pitts and the Falcons reached an agreement on a three-year, $54 million contract, with $36 million fully guaranteed. This is the largest three-year contract for a tight end in NFL history. The #Falcons and star TE Kyle Pitts have agreed to terms on a 3-year, $54M contract. Pitts will not play on the $15M franchise tag and instead receives $36M fully guaranteed over the next two seasons. The deal was negotiated by David Mulugheta of @AthletesFirst and Andre Odom. pic.twitter.com/s6Yf7siLX4— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) June 23, 2026While this may be the largest three-year contract handed out to a tight end, this deal puts Kyle Pitts 3rd in average annual value (18M) behind George Kittle (19.1) and Trey McBride (19). It is also 3rd in total value, behind those two. Pitts was in line to make $15M playing on the franchise tag this year, but Ian Cunningham and his team wanted more long-term security than that, and it’s hard to fault them. While Pitts skeptics are quick to point out what he can’t do, they have a hard time naming someone who can replace what he can do.2025 was a return to form for the player who took the league by storm as a rookie. He functioned as the team’s second-best receiving option and took over when Drake London had to miss time. With Kevin Stefanski calling the shots, Pitt’s involvement in the offense could take another leap. No, Kyle Pitts isn’t an elite inline tight end, but his ability to get vertical on defense and generate explosive plays makes up for it. It should also be noted that with Austin Hooper and Charlie Woerner rostered, the team will have enough solutions for inline duties. Phase 2 of the Kyle Pitts era is highly anticipated, and at age 25, as Doc Holliday would say, he’s in his prime.

Aston Villa make Morgan Rogers stance crystal clear as Man United lurk
Aston Villa make Morgan Rogers stance crystal clear as Man United lurk Aston Villa’s position on a potential sale of Morgan Rogers has emerged, even as the likes of Manchester United weigh up a swoop for the player.Rogers interestRogers is a man in great demand this summer following another stellar campaign for Villa. The 23-year-old, who is currently in the United States with the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, moved to Villa from Middlesbrough for £8m in 2024. He signed a new six-year deal with Villa in November after a sensational maiden campaign in which he won the PFA’s young player of the year award.Rogers made 55 appearances across all competitions for Villa last season, contributing 14 goals and 11 assists. This tally includes 10 goals and six assists in the Premier League. The attacking midfielder, who can also be deployed on the left, was named as the player of the tournament in the Europa League last season after helping Villa to their first major trophy since 1996.Rogers’ talent has caught the eye, but United’s interest has been given added impetus by his pre-existing relationship with Michael Carrick, stemming from their time together at Middlesbrough.Villa are said to want £80m – £100m for Rogers. Arsenal are also said to be big admirers of the Villa man and a recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the Emirates would be his preferred transfer destination.Sky Sports have now issued an update on Rogers’ situation.Rogers latestSky Sports confirm that United are one of the parties keeping tabs on Rogers, alongside Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.However, his suitors are line to be massively disappointed.“Aston Villa are believed to have made it clear to interested clubs they would not welcome any bids for Morgan Rogers this summer and as a result have not put a clear price on the England star’s value, Sky Sports News understands.”Unai Emery’s side are adamant that they do not want to sell Rogers. This message has been passed on to other clubs. While the situation may look difficult at present, the Rogers saga is far from resolved, with further developments almost inevitable. Villa, it seems, are deliberately holding back, unwilling to play their hand prematurely.Featured image Dan Mullan via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. NFL world reacts to Falcons giving Kyle Pitts new $54M contract
The Atlanta Falcons have reportedly agreed to terms with tight end Kyle Pitts on a new three-year contract. The team franchise-tagged Pitts at the start of the offseason, but the former top-five pick will instead sign a three-year, $54 million deal, which includes $36 million in guaranteed money.Pitts led the team in catches (88) and receiving yards (928) last season, and stepped up big when Drake London was injured. London received a four-year, $141 million extension two weeks ago, and now Pitts is locked in for three more seasons. The 25-year-old entered the league as one of the most hyped-up tight end prospects this league has ever seen, and somehow he lived up to that hype as a rookie. Why Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe World Cup records aren’t that impressive
Photo by Pat Elmont and Karl Bridgeman - FIFA/FIFA via Getty ImagesThe 2026 FIFA World Cup is setting the stage for a Golden Boot race for the ages as all-time records fall like dominoes – and we have not yet reached the end of the group stages – but it all just feels a bit meh. Lionel Messi currently leads the way with five goals from his first two games for Argentina, while Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland sit just behind with four goals each.It has been a remarkable fortnight of goalscoring from the game’s biggest stars. Messi has become the competition’s all-time top goalscorer with 18 goals; Mbappe will not be far behind, already matching Miroslav Klose’s 16 goals in as many games, topping France’s all-time goalscoring charts.Elsewhere, Harry Kane has matched Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals for England with a double against Croatia and Erling Haaland is already leading the way for Norway.Cristiano has now joined the party, notching two goals against Uzbekistan, a tally which he will no doubt add to if Portugal top Group K. At the time of writing, they would face Paraguay in the Round of 32. Yes. Paraguay.NFL Superstar Tom Brady asked the question: “Best World Cup ever?”While the ongoing goal-fest may make it seem that way, what do we actually expect when we’re seeing the world’s most elite footballers matched up against the likes of Uzbekistan, Panama and – I’m not just saying this because I’m an England fan – Scotland?Negative impact of FIFA World Cup changes Unfortunately, breaking these records has just become inevitable and will continue to be broken with ease thanks to FIFA’s insistence on fixing things that were never broken. The new 48-team format has undoubtedly increased the potential for goals as the world’s greatest pick off the lower-ranked teams. The finalists will also have to play more games than ever before, this year’s World Cup winners will need to play eight games rather than seven, an even greater opportunity to add to the goal tally.USA’s breakout star of the tournament, Folarin Balogun summed it up.He said: “I think it’s annoying. Seeing players like Messi, Mbappe, Haaland – they’re so inevitable. I think they’re scoring a goal a game, sometimes more.“For me, it’s just about trying to get to that level – to be inevitable as well.””I think it’s annoying. Seeing players like Messi, Mbappe, Haaland – they’re so inevitable. I think they’re scoring a goal a game, sometimes more.“For me, it’s just about trying to get to that level – to be inevitable as well.”Photo by John Dorton/USSF/Getty ImagesAt just 24, he may well get that chance, as unlikely as it may seem, reports suggest a 64-team format has already been mooted at FIFA headquarters, however unlikely. But would you actually put it past them? The game becomes more and more of a money spinner by the year, and what better way than to bring in another 16 nations?I absolutely buy into the fact that football is the global sport and everyone should have access to it, but that starts at a lower level. The World Cup is supposed to be the greatest players on earth battling it out for the most coveted trophy in sport. It’s supposed to be closed off to the elite.Unfortunately, that is no longer the case and as we watch some of the greatest players to grace the game blast through these remarkable records, it’s no longer as impressive as it once was. Like most things in football these days, it just isn’t the same.Read more:World Cup team boss says ‘football is lost’ as $4.3bn issue laid bareLamine Yamal’s agent sets $1.3bn record at the World CupPeter Schmeichel explains why Lionel Messi’s record-breaking World Cup goal left him ‘frustrated’

England XI vs New Zealand for 3rd Test confirmed: Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson among the four changes made
NEW DELHI: England have made four changes to their playing XI for the series-deciding third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, with captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson returning to the side. Jamie Smith and Shoaib Bashir have also been recalled, replacing James Rew, Jordan Cox, Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker. The changes come after England's disappointing 253-run defeat in the second Test at The Oval, where a heavily altered lineup failed to chase down a target of 463. New Zealand's victory levelled the series at 1-1, setting up a winner-takes-all finale.Stokes and Atkinson missed the second Test after breaching the team's midnight curfew following England's win in the opening Test. The pair were present during an incident involving an ECB security staff member and a Saracens rugby player, which led to an investigation. However, a disciplinary hearing later cleared both players of any violent conduct. The ECB stated that Stokes was not involved in the altercation, while Atkinson was the victim of unprovoked attacks and did not retaliate. Both players did receive written warnings for breaking team conduct rules.Ahead of the Trent Bridge Test, England coach Brendon McCullum rejected speculation that his relationship with Stokes had become strained following the controversy."We talked about that this morning," McCullum said. "I said, 'do you know where this has come from, the conversations around our relationship over the last six months?' He said 'no, I have no idea as far as I'm concerned.'"— englandcricket (@englandcricket) McCullum stressed that the two remain close and continue to work together effectively. "There is [are] going to be times where we discuss things and we debate things. We've always ended up making decisions together... Robin Roberts, Geno Auriemma return to WNBA booth for 30th anniversary with 'a whole different script'
Geno Auriemma and Robin Roberts before an exhibition game between Connecticut and the New York Liberty in 1998. (photo by Bob Stowell/Getty Images)Robert W Stowell Jr via Getty ImagesNearly three decades after introducing a national viewing audience to the WNBA, Robin Roberts and Geno Auriemma fielded a common request to 1990s icons. How about a reunion to honor the league’s 30th anniversary? ESPN Senior Vice President of Sports Production Tim Corrigan asked. The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame members delivered identical answers: If the other said yes, they would do it. Which is how Roberts and Auriemma came to join veteran play-by-play commentator Beth Mowins as one-time color analysts on the call for the July 7 game between the Dallas Wings and New York Liberty (8 p.m. ET, ESPN). The duo will reunite as one of the ongoing 30th anniversary tributes amid exploding growth in the WNBA. They called two seasons together for ESPN/ABC, the only company to air games since the league’s inception, with play-by-play lead Roberts continuing on as the early voice of the league alongside other analysts. Expect there to be plenty of color upon their reunion, this time in upgraded high definition. On the 29th anniversary of their first call on ESPN — the Utah Starzz defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 102-89 at home on June 23, 1997 — Roberts landed an early dig on a meandering path down memory lane. “Geno, will you be prepared this time?” the “Good Morning America” co-host asked. “I remember you showed up and you had a napkin with a couple of notes. But you made it work.” Before they team up again on Tuesday, July 7, look back @RobinRoberts & Geno Auriemma covering the inaugural #WNBA season in 1997 🏀 pic.twitter.com/a1FpxVQD2P— ESPN PR (@ESPNPR) June 22, 2026Auriemma, then a one-time NCAA champion coach at UConn, recalled through laughter having to learn pronunciations ahead of ESPN’s first telecast because they had never seen most of the players before. There were fewer TV channels in general, limited broadcast windows for women’s basketball overall, and the opportunity to readily stream or search online information online remained decades away.“Now they’re all household names,” Auriemma said. Three are Auriemma’s most recent star-studded alumnae. Breanna Stewart, an unprecedented four-time NCAA champion at UConn and three-time WNBA champion, is off to another MVP-caliber campaign for the Liberty (11-6). The Wings (11-6) feature the most recent No. 1 overall picks, Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd, who won UConn’s 13th and most recent national title together in 2025. “I don't have to coach them,” Auriemma said. “So I can say all the things I've always wanted to say about them. So I'm looking forward to it.”Roberts remained close to the game after her Emmy Award-winning career as an ESPN broadcaster, celebrating the league’s successes and often sharing its biggest news on the morning show. Her Rock’n Robin Productions company announced a documentary on the expansion Toronto Tempo last week, and released one on late Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt earlier this year. She became an equity investor in the Liberty in October and is a regular at Liberty and Connecticut Sun games. The journalist in her is taking the assignment seriously, to the point that she said she feels like a coach taping and rewatching games. Many of her GMA staffers, including one young producer, are massive WNBA fans there to help her in the lead-up. Or maybe even on the air.“It might be a little bit like ‘Devil Wears Prada,’ I might have a little earpiece in my ear with her feeding me some info,” Roberts said. “I know that there will be some heightened interest. The audience watching now, it's different. Before you could get away with maybe not knowing your stuff as much. This is a very, very savvy audience.”When Roberts and Auriemma announced their first game together in 1997, it was the second game of those teams’ existence. Interest was high for a league hawked by NBA Commissioner David Stern, but dropped off in the 2000s as teams folded. The environment is different even since the 25th anniversary. There will be a record 18 teams by 2030 as the league expands, including to a 50-game schedule next year. Viewership is at all-time highs, with games regularly nabbing 1 million viewers on various networks. A Fever-Liberty matchup in June set the 2026 high-water peak of 3.02 million. And social media takes everything to an entirely different level. Auriemma knows the only way they’ll make that many waves is if either of them says something “outrageous,” which he acquiesced might happen. Roberts felt it was a disservice to the audience not to have a third, more seasoned veteran of the game in the booth. Mowins will be there to guide the ship, allowing Roberts and Auriemma to add “fun and some flavor,” Auriemma said, while reminiscing on how the league began and how it arrived here. “I just want to be in the moment,” Roberts said. “I think that’s the thing that Geno and I really excelled at that time. I think sometimes you can get too much in your head.” She’ll soak in the regular sight of a sold-out crowd at Barclays, recalling that not long ago, the top bowls of NBA arenas were curtained off due to low ticket sales. This year, more than half the league is averaging at least 10,000 fans per game, with four cracking the 14K mark, according to Across the Timeline. (Three teams are selling out arenas with a capacity of 7,000 or less.) Auriemma won’t need to name-drop men to make his point. “In order to legitimize what we were doing back then, we had to compare every player to an NBA player,” Auriemma said. “Now we can talk about them in their own right and compare them to each other, the great players in the league. So we've got a whole different script to work with now.”Once they each heard the other had confirmed their nostalgia-fueled event, Roberts said they were more focused on where to eat dinner the night before and head out to drinks afterward. Auriemma may make notes on that dining napkin again. But unlike when he was simply trying to figure it all out 30 years ago, he can fall back on a wealth of knowledge. Even if it still might careen off course. “I do remember, one time, I said, ‘Hey, Robin, remember we went to lunch today at Roberto's? That's a great place, wasn't it?’” Auriemma said. “And you go, ‘Yeah, I really liked it.’ And [Corrigan] is in my ear going, ‘Shut the hell up and talk about the game.’“Now that we are older, we can say whatever we want, Rob.”Chipped in Roberts: “What are they going to do, fire us?”“Yeah, what are they going to do,” Auriemma said, “fire us?”

England player ratings vs Ghana: Who failed to perform in drab World Cup draw?
England were held to a frustrating goalless draw against Ghana in their second World Cup group-stage match in Boston on Tuesday. After so much optimism following the entertaining 4-2 win against Croatia, it was a draining afternoon for Thomas Tuchel’s side this time around in a result which leaves Group L, and specifically top spot, in the balance. Following a drab first-half, Bukayo Saka and Elliot Anderson had decent openings in the second-half before Harry Kane spurned the best opportunity of the match late on. But the Three Lions struggled to create many chances against a dogged, defensive Ghanaian outfit, coached by ex-Man Utd assistant Carlos Queiroz. The result, which means England have drawn their second match in their last four major tournaments, means both England and Ghana are level on four points ahead of their final matches on Saturday: England face group minnows Panama and Ghana take on Croatia. Here’s how the England players rated after their 0-0 draw against Ghana: England Jordan Pickford – 6 Did not have a single save to make but was perhaps fortunate to escape without sanction after a collision with Ghana substitute Prince Kwabena Adu outside the penalty area. A welcome clean sheet after conceding two goals against Croatia. Reece James – 6 Teamed up nicely with Noni Madueke on the right again but was slow and predictable with the ball at his feet. Was it the sort of game where England missed the ingenuity of, say, Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back? Ezri Konsa – 7 Made a crucial intervention from Antoine Semenyo in the box at the end of the first-half and looked more assured after his shaky World Cup debut against Croatia. Was he lucky not to give away a penalty in the second-half? Perhaps. Marc Guehi – 6 Replacing Manchester City teammate John Stones in the starting XI, Guehi slotted in seamlessly. Should start at the back for the foreseeable, such is his poise and pace. Had a header cleared off the line in stoppage time. Djed Spence – 7 The surprise starting pick over Nico O’Reilly, Spence was solid on his first World Cup start. While he didn’t actually face a single one-on-one battle with Antoine Semenyo, he did cover well to deny Marvin Senaya after his second-half burst into the box. Djed Spence was solid on his World Cup debut for England (Getty)Elliot Anderson – 6Struggled to influence proceedings in the same way as he did against Croatia, but perhaps inevitable given Ghana’s shape. Didn’t do enough with a free header at the back post on 61 minutes. Declan Rice – 6 Most influential player on the pitch in the first-half, with a first-half free-kick and header over the bar, but did pick up a needless booking. Set-piece deliveries were, perhaps, a tad predictable. Noni Madueke – 6Again, won the battle of the wingers, but wasn’t as impactful as he was against Croatia. Bright on the right-hand side and carved out more opportunities than Gordon on the left. Could lose his spot to Bukayo Saka. Jude Bellingham – 5 Struggled to make an impact going forward, but did make a perfectly timed tackle to deny Semenyo a run on goal. A bit stale, nonetheless. Anthony Gordon – 4Quiet last week, the Barcelona winger actually started sharply but faded massively and backed out of an aerial contest with Senaya defensively, which almost cost England a goal. He did have the first shot on target of the game in the 57th minute, but Gordon will be lucky not to lose his starting spot for Marcus Rashford against Panama on Saturday. Anthony Gordon struggled to influence proceedings (Reuters)Harry Kane – 5 Overtook David Beckham (watching on in the stands) in the all-time England appearance list... but that was just about as good as it got for the England captain on Tuesday. And that glorious late chance, skying high with his left foot with the goal at his mercy, will haunt him. An off day. Substitutes: Bukayo Saka - 7. Had a really good sight on goal after coming on, but his header ballooned over. Also worked keeper Asare with a shot rifled towards the corner. Is he fit enough to start against Panama? Nico O’Reilly - 6. So unlucky not to score after rising highest in the box late on, but his header rattled the crossbar. Morgan Rogers – 6. Looked bright when he came on for Bellingham and may well get his chance from the start against Panama. Eberechi Eze - 5. Gave the ball away cheaply, which presented a chance for Ghana on the break. Didn’t do much attacking-wise in his 20 minutes on the pitch. Marcus Rashford - 7. The main question is: why did it take Tuchel until 82 minutes to bring him in? Immediately looked threatening on the left: direct and brave on the ball. Should start against Panama. Marcus Rashford looked bright when he came on (AP)Ghana Benjamin Asare – 8 Marvin Senaya – 7 Jonas Adjetey – 7 Jerome Opoku – 7Gideon Mensah – 6Thomas Partey – 6 Thomas Partey up against England on Tuesday (PA)Inaki Williams – 7 Caleb Yirenkyi – 6Kwasi Sibo – 6Antoine Semenyo – 5Antoine Semenyo underwhelmed for Ghana (AP)Jordan Ayew – 6 SubstituesAbdul Fatawu - 6 Prince Kwabena Adu - 6Kojo Peprah Oppong - N/AAbdul Rahman Baba - N/A

Liverpool now on final stage of blockbuster €100m deal
Liverpool now on final stage of blockbuster €100m dealLiverpool are on the final stage of a blockbuster €100m deal. The Reds hope to push this over the line ASAP.Yan Diomande is the no.1 target at Liverpool and it looks more and more likely that they'll get him. If Richard Hughes and company can justify the price tag RB Leipzig set, that is.The Athletic suggests that's not entirely guaranteed. A €100m offer was rejected, though it's entirely possible that the structure of that bid was what ruined Liverpool's day. What we do know is that Liverpool feel Diomande is worth roughly €100m. Finding a way to get Leipzig to agree with that is the final stage of completing a deal, as Media Foot claims that an agreement with the player is already in place. Now, that's certainly not a formal, signed agreement. Instead, Liverpool have the verbal agreement of Diomande and his representatives ahead of a move.It suggests that Paris Saint-Germain are no longer a major factor here. It also suggests that the price tag is all that's preventing this one from being done and dusted. And so the next few weeks are massive. Liverpool will want to talk Leipzig down to €100m, possibly in full. Leipzig will either want far more than that or for the Reds to disappear and leave them alone. But if Liverpool can win this little battle, the player is theirs. They've done more of the work here and only the difficult bit is left. What a signing this could be.Yan Diomande: Situation SummaryRB Leipzig Career and PerformanceAs of 23 June 2026, Yan Diomande is a 19-year-old winger for RB Leipzig. Since making a prominent move from CD Leganés in July 2025, the electric Ivorian attacker has taken German football by storm. Operating primarily on the right flank, his explosive dribbling and clinical finishing made him a foundational centrepiece for his club. During a sensational 2025/26 breakout campaign, Diomande recorded 33 Bundesliga appearances, racking up 12 goals and eight assists. His stellar individual displays earned him the prestigious Bundesliga Young Player of the Season award and have triggered massive summer transfer interest from Liverpool.Diomande is currently in North America representing the Ivory Coast national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Handed a starting role by manager Émerse Faé, the winger earned Player of the Match honours in their opening 1–0 Group E victory over Ecuador on 14 June 2026. Despite a narrow 2–1 defeat to Germany on 20 June, he remains a key figure in their pursuit of the knockout stages.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Milwaukee Brewers – Nick Lodolo vs. Brandon Sproat
WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 23: Nick Lodolo #40 celebrates the win with Elly De La Cruz #44 of the Cincinnati Reds after throwing a complete game shutout against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on July 23, 2025 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Jess Rapfogel/Getty Images) | Getty Images On the plus side, the Cincinnati Reds got an excellent start from righty Brady Singer on Monday during the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. After completely falling on his face to begin the 2026 season, the pending free agent has turned things around lately, pitching to just a 1.64 ERA in 22.0 IP across his most recent four starts, his 23/9 K/BB every bit as important as the overall results. The bad news, of course, is that he’s pitching his way into prime ‘get traded’ form as the Reds continue to lose games they put themselves in position to win. Singer’s great start last night didn’t hold up as the Reds failed to score off Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff, and they eventually lost 2-1 in extra innings on a Tony Santillan wild pitch. The Aristoreds!Anyway, they’ll turn things over to another veteran who has struggled both with blisters this year and with overall success in Nick Lodolo. They need him now, more than ever, if they’re going to dig themselves out of last place in the NL Central and back into the playoff chase. The news of the day, of course, is the return of Elly De La Cruz. He was activated this morning at Will Benson’s expense, and he’s in the lineup hitting 2nd for the Reds already. Notable in the roster shuffle was the team’s decision to keep Edwin Arroyo up despite a suddenly crowded middle infield, but it’s Arroyo in the lineup at 2B tonight over the struggling Matt McLain. Keep an eye on that going forward!Brandon Sproat will start for Milwaukee, while it’ll be Lodolo throwing the game’s first pitch at 7:10 PM ET.Lineups for both clubs below. Bradley point guard out for season with knee injury
PEORIA — The Bradley Braves lost a prized acquisition from their offseason rebuild Tuesday when projected starting point guard Georgi Gerganov was ruled out for the season with a major knee injury. The 6-foot-4 European star from Bulgaria suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a non-contract drill in a BU team workout. He was set to get 30 minutes per game at point guard and run Bradley's offense in tandem with Peoria native and sophomore guard Dietrich Richardson.Richardson, the 6-foot-7 former Manual Rams star, will likely now take on the starting role at point guard while BU searches through the summer for answers to the position. The Braves have one roster spot available and two unused scholarships, which they could potentially use to bring in an older, veteran guard who can provide some depth at the position. But the program's NIL budget is likely spent, so options might be limited.Gerganov is a Sliven, Bulgaria, native who averaged 21.3 points per game on 36.6 minutes for pro team BC Botev in the Bulgaria National Basketball League during the 2025-26 season. He was an emerging star in Europe who delivered 5.5 rebounds per game, 5.8 assists, 2.3 steals and shot 45.8% from the field and 33.3% from 3 last season. He played for the Bulgaria National Team in the 2025-26 World Cup, facing Holland.
