OXFORD — Ole Miss women's basketball was able to reload its roster at the expense of other SEC teams.Jada Richard and Talaysia Cooper are the top players for coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin since the season ended from the transfer portal, ranked No. 3 nationally by USA TODAY Sports.Senior guard Talyasia Cooper starred at Tennessee over the past two seasons. She averaged 16.0 points and had a team-high 104 assists in 2025-26.Richard is a junior who started 35 games at LSU in two seasons. She averaged 9.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game.Richard and Cooper's status as former SEC rivals has led to some fun moments in summer workouts. Ole Miss beat Tennessee 94-81 last season despite 30 points from Cooper. The Rebels lost 78-70 to Richard and LSU. Richard had eight points."It's a lot of fun because we trash talk a little bit about what should have happened last year," McPhee-McCuin said. "Now we're all on the same team."Richard and Cooper had the same reason for transferring to Ole Miss: Coach Yo."I love her spirit," Richard said. "There's something about Coach Yo. The NCAA Division I Cabinet unanimously approved an age-based, five-year eligibility model on Tuesday that's set to replace an existing model that's allowed four seasons of competition over five years with no age restrictions.Granted the change isn't final until the D-I Cabinet's meeting concludes on Wednesday, but the rule change is poised to go into effect for all prospects initially enrolling full-time in college in fall 2027 or later. For incoming 2026 class members and current student-athletes with eligibility remaining, Division I schools will apply whichever eligibility model is most beneficial for each individual.Student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year will have no additional eligibility, although it’s expected that some will seek fifth years anyway via lawsuit.The age-based model will start student-athletes’ eligibility clock when they first enroll in college full-time or at the beginning of the academic year following their 19th birthday, whichever takes place first. The existing eligibility model has drawn criticism in recent years due to the manipulation of the waiver system and the surge of athletes in their mid-20s creating roster logjams. Dybantsa could become one of the NBA’s most unstoppable shot-creators. At 6-foot-9, he has a special blend of athletic tools the way he bends, shifts, and explodes with the ball in his hands. Dybantsa led the nation with 25.5 points per game while breaking Danny Ainge’s 48-year-old BYU freshman scoring record with a 43-point eruption. He gets to the rim at will, cooks in the midrange, draws fouls at a high rate, and displays point forward potential. After weeks of deliberating between Dybantsa and Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Dybantsa likely got the nod because he’s significantly taller and comes with less baggage. In Washington, the pressure will be alleviated off AJ early in his career, now that he's teammates with two veterans in an All-Star-caliber big man in Anthony Davis and point guard Trae Young. The Wizards could even be quite competitive early on in Dybantsa’s career, especially if their existing young players get even better: Alex Sarr already looks like an effective two-way big, while guards and wings like Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Bilal Coulibaly have all shown flashes at one time or another. In a deep draft class, there's sure to be plenty of relevant rookies for fantasy basketball managers going into 2026-27. Yahoo analyst Dan Titus will be sharing his live grades for each pick in the top-14 during the first round, updated after each pick. No. 1 Pick: Washington Wizards — AJ Dybantsa, F, BYUDybantsa joins a Washington team where he can contribute immediately. At 6'9" with a 7'0.5" wingspan, Dybantsa’s size and athleticism will translate well at the next level. He averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game in his only collegiate season. His 3-ball needs work (33.1%), but otherwise, he’s one of the best offensive talents in his class. Teaming up with a playmaker like Trae Young will be good for him, and he’ll complete what’s becoming a formidable frontcourt with Kyshawn George, Alex Sarr and (potentially) Anthony Davis. I like Dybantsa’s ability to get to the rim and he should be a draftable fantasy asset from jump. Nice pick, Wiz.Grade: A

The Washington Wizards have selected BYU forward AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. The selection culminates months of speculation over who would go first overall in one of the most anticipated drafts in NBA history. Dybantsa, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Duke forward Cameron Boozer and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson were widely projected as the top four prospects in the draft. But the decision for the Wizards was reported to have come down to Dybantsa or Peterson.Ultimately, they chose Dybantsa, an athletic, two-way forward with superstar upside. Dybantsa wasn't an All-Defensive selection in the Big 12, but he was impactful on that end of the floor. He possesses the size, athleticism, mobility and motor to develop into a high-level NBA defender who can guard multiple positions. In short, there's little not to like about Dybantsa's NBA prospects. He projects to slot in as a multi-tooled offensive weapon from Day 1 and possesses the drive and upside to develop as a defender and a 3-point shooter. If he does, he projects as a multi-time All-NBA selection as a pro.

He was widely projected to go in the top three — and for good reason. He's coming off one of the most prolific freshman seasons to date. Boozer became the ACC Rookie of the Year, the ACC Player of the Year and the consensus National Player of the Year in his lone season with the Blue Devils.He scored 20-plus points in 23 of his 38 games, eclipsing the 30-point mark four times. Boozer helped Duke win ACC regular season and tournament titles and enter the NCAA tournament as a No. 1 seed.Boozer's father exceeded expectations as a second-round pick who went No. 35 overall in 2002. He played a combined 15 seasons for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2002-04), Utah Jazz (2004-10), Chicago Bulls (2010-14) and Los Angeles Lakers (2014-15), averaging 16.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.Even more will be expected of his son Cameron, a potential needle-mover for the Grizzlies.

The Arizona Cardinals will not be adding quarterback Brendan Sorsby to their team in 2026. After applying to enter the supplemental draft, the league responded to Sorsby saying they were not accepting him and that there will not be a supplemental draft. That can put to bed any talk of any more quarterbacks, which means the Cardinals are stuck dealing with Jacoby Brissett's contract dispute. Here is what the league wrote in a letter to him:Dear Mr. Sorsby: We are in receipt of your Petition for Special Eligibility, dated June 16, 2026 (“Petition”). As announced earlier today, the League has elected not to conduct a Supplemental Draft this year. Under our Collective Bargaining Agreement, the League retains sole discretion to determine whether it is appropriate to conduct a Supplemental Draft in any given year. The League has not conducted such a draft for several years and, prior to your submission, the League had no plans to do so this year, as no other player has sought entry. Your Petition—filed three business days before the deadline, without any supporting information or documentation, and only after abandoning your recent litigation efforts to avoid NCAA sanctions—does not provide a basis for the League to alter those plans. The issues presented by your Petition are too significant, and too closely tied to the League’s core integrity interests, to permit meaningful review within the timeline presented. The sole reasons identified in your Petition for seeking entry into the Supplemental Draft are that you have been “declared ineligible” by the NCAA, have “exhausted all of [your] avenues to continue in the NCAA,” and “want to now play in the NFL.” The Petition provides no information regarding the basis for, or timing of, the NCAA’s decision. Public sources, however, indicate that in May 2026 the NCAA issued a determination declaring you permanently ineligible from participation in college athletics, based on a sustained pattern of improper gambling activity during your collegiate career at three different universities. The League does not have the complete record of the NCAA’s investigation, and you did not provide any such materials with your Petition. Available information nonetheless indicates that, over the course of your collegiate career, you knowingly engaged in repeated and significant violations of NCAA rules designed to preserve the integrity of athletic competition. Reported conduct includes placing wagers on your own team and teammates and, to avoid detection, establishing or funding accounts in the names of intermediaries who placed bets on your behalf. There are also reports that you may have violated state criminal law. Your Petition does not address these matters. Nor does it demonstrate accountability for your conduct or indicate whether, or how, you would adhere to the League’s rules and policies governing the integrity of competition. Instead, even after receiving notice of the NCAA’s decision rescinding your college eligibility in May, you sought to avoid the consequences of that determination through litigation rather than accepting responsibility for your actions, and you pursued entry into the NFL only after abandoning those efforts. As Commissioner Goodell has emphasized, participation in the NFL is a privilege that carries with it significant responsibilities, including accountability. By all accounts, you are a talented player with the potential for future success. We encourage you to focus on preparing for possible entry into the NFL through the 2027 NFL Annual Draft. The league was not satisfied with Sorsby's application or the fact that he didn't address his addiction or how he intends on avoiding further problems, as NFL players are not allowed to gamble on football. The league essentially believed that Sorsby was trying to run from the consequences of his actions. He is able to participate in other professional leagues, but because he was not entered into the supplemental draft, he is not eligible to sign with any team until after the 2027 NFL draft, for which he will be eligible. Sorsby's attorney said they will use the courts to try and be able to play in the NFL. While there was a lot of debate about if he'd go first or second, Washington ended up landing on AJ Dybantsa at No. 1 overall. Peterson is the first Jayhawks player to be picked in the NBA draft since both Johnny Furphy and Kevin McCullar Jr. were selected in the second round in 2024.Peterson earned All-Big 12 Conference second team honors this past season at KU, in addition to being named to the all-freshman team. Health issues led to him missing some time during the campaign, and appeared to play a significant role in why his place among the top prospects in this NBA draft class came into question. He’s someone Utah and its fans can trust if the basketball is in his hands in the final seconds. With the Jayhawks, he reached the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament and the round of 32 of the NCAA tournament.Cons of Utah selecting Darryn Peterson in 2026 NBA DraftThe major concern that’s surrounded Peterson during his year with KU and during the pre-draft process has been his health. Would he be able to go through the pre-draft process at full strength? Would NBA teams that had the chance to pick him feel comfortable with what they were able to learn about what happened with the different issues that came up while he was at Kansas, and his ability to move forward as a featured piece of their organization?Peterson averaged 20.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game across 24 appearances, but amid that he did miss 11 games. There were ways that the Jayhawks benefited from other players having to step up in his absence, like senior guard Melvin Council Jr. emerging. But they are currently awaiting the return of one player in specific who they haven't seen healthy all season: Romy Gonzalez.His season was paused when he experienced shoulder discomfort at Spring Training in February. He received a PRP injection and underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure to clean up his shoulder joint. The procedure landed him on the 60-day injured list. Gonzalez has been on a rehab assignment with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. He was pulled from Portland when a hip flexor flare-up caused him discomfort. He was cleared to return to baseball activities and joined the Triple-A team in Worcester on Tuesday. Atlanta did something a little surprising Tuesday night in the first round of the NBA Draft.Many figured the Hawks would go with size and choose 7-foot-3 Aday Mara out of Michigan at No. 8 overall to get a jumbo center in the fold.Instead, they opted for 6-4 lead guard Kingston Flemings from Houston.It's not a bad pick, but with CJ McCollum re-signing for next season, it made sense that Atlanta would opt for size to shore up their frontline to complement Jalen Johnson and Jonathan Kuminga.Flemings, however, is the long-term solution at point guard for this young team, meaning the organization put a larger emphasis on additional playmaking.This suggests the Hawks wanted more on-ball help for Johnson so they don’t overtax their All-Star forward, prioritized lineup symmetry and will possibly look to add size later in the draft or in free agency.Regardless, Atlanta is a team to track next season.Flemings is a ridiculously intriguing young lead guard who can score at three levels, has strong court vision and reliable decision-making, even at such a young age.Will he have a huge impact on the Hawks in Year 1? Probably not, but that's not the play here. This is a long-term vision the Hawks are initiating and rightfully so.

Alfred / The San Diego Union-Tribune via Getty Images) Manager Craig Stammen announced in his pre-game media session on Tuesday, the promotion of LHP JP Sears to make his season debut with the San Diego Padres after the team placed starter Lucas Giolito on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.Stammen reported that Giolito spoke up about the soreness in his elbow after his last appearance against the Texas Rangers. It is reportedly similar to the soreness he felt last season before missing the rest of the year on the injured list. The Padres will push Randy Vásquez back a day, and Sears will start tomorrow against the Atlanta Braves, with Vásquez going the first game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.Giolito joins Germán Márquez, Matt Waldron, Nick Pivetta, and Jhony Brito as starters on the injured list. Both Márquez and Brito are completing their work to return from injuries, with Brito pitching two days ago and Márquez nearing the end of his rehab assignment. Waldron just began his rehab assignment with El Paso this past week.Giolito signed with the organization on April 22, making his season debut May 17 after an abbreviated ramp-up to the season. His velocity, diminished this season, sits 2-3 mph below his norm, and he has been hit frequently, pitching in 29.2 innings over seven games with a 5.16 ERA. The team has used an opener for him in his last two games.Sears, acquired at the trade deadline last season, has a history as an innings-eater in his MLB career. His previous ERA, before pitching for the Padres, sat between 3.50 and 4.50 from 2022 to 2024. He finished last year with a 5.04 ERA overall, 4.95 with the Athletics before the trade and 5.47 in his five starts with the Padres. For 2026, Sears has started for El Paso in Triple-A and leads the team with 62 strikeouts, but also has a 7.92 ERA in his 14 starts and 63.2 innings. The dry air and elevation in the Pacific Coast League are not conducive to the effectiveness of pitchers. He could be more successful at Petco Park, with the damp air and being at sea level. Sears features a seven-pitch mix with a four-seam fastball that sits in the low 90’s. His command and movement might look very different in MLB parks.With Giolito to the IL, both Márquez and Brito could get opportunities to push their way onto the roster. Sears and the two returning pitchers give the team some depth and options as they decide what their moves will be at the trade deadline. With a starting pitching staff ranked 28th in MLB, the Padres need to improve the starting rotation if they are to remain in contention for the playoffs.
