NBA Draft: What Michigan F Morez Johnson Jr. brings to the Dallas Mavericks

He proved to be among the best defenders in the entire country this season, and has the size and the tools to continue offering the same at the next level.Johnson was a staple of the Wolverines’ interior defense during their National Championship run, averaging 1.1 blocks and 0.7 steals per game, good for a near-five percent block percentage and 1.7 steal percentage, with a great 5.7 defensive box-plus-minus to wrap it all up, according to Sports Illustrated.Against Johnson this past season, opposing players shot 33 percent on 155 shot attempts, notably just 25 percent on jumpers. Johnson doesn’t just stick to bigs either, as with his 7-foot-3 wingspan, he was able to guard the perimeter at a high rate this past season, easily switching 1-through-5, disrupting pick-and-roll situations, knocking bigs off their spots, deflecting passes with his long arms and sticking with guards due to his movement.Morez Johnson steals entry, drives and finishes on Hannes Steinbach.Hannes and Morez are contrasts as finishers. Hannes elevates off 1 foot a bit quicker, but he favors touch angles and floaters too much.Morez, ironically, has better touch but still craves a bump. Rightly so. pic.twitter.com/0cEPCQxy5m— Chucking Darts NBA & Draft Podcast (@ChuckingDarts) June 13, 2026Offensively, he averaged 13.1 points per game on 62 percent shooting overall in 2025-2026. He proved capable of taking over games, notably finishing with 19 points, 11 rebounds and an assist in his homecoming at Illinois this past season. But more consistently, Johnson shot 62 percent on post-ups, scored the bulk of his points on cuts at a 75 percent clip and he converted 72 percent of his shots at the rim.MOREZ JOHNSON JR. THROWS IT DOWN!This game is a dunk-fest 🤯 pic.twitter.com/bKT5bk0CJ5— CBS Sports College Basketball 🏀 (@CBSSportsCBB) March 8, 2026Nonetheless, his biggest strength is his rebounding. Johnson came down with 7.3 rebounds per game this season. In big moments, his motor never faltered, and he used his gritty play-style to crash the boards and bring down anything he could find. While his shooting may not be 100 percent ready for the NBA, he can make an immediate impact on the glass that will earn him minutes early on in his career.Morez Johnson motor sequenceCrash + putback dunkPressures at halfcourt, helps create TODemands ball in post, gets fouledEnergy tweeners like MJJ need to capitalize on every touch. Steinbach defended him well in post this half, but MJJ didn’t stop rim hunting. Good stuff. pic.twitter.com/gF04yQSdwA— Chucking Darts NBA & Draft Podcast (@ChuckingDarts) June 13, 2026As for areas of improvement, Johnson is a weak primary ball-handler, averaging 1.2 assists per game to 1.3 turnovers per game for a negative assist-to-turnover ratio of .85. He also took only a handful of threes in his college career, taking none at Illinois before shooting just 35 at Michigan, going 12-for-35 on the season. Finally, Johnson has grown immensely as a free throw shooter, but there is still room for improvement in that area as well. He was a 61 percent free throw shooter a year ago in Champaign, and he drastically improved to 78 percent with the Wolverines. Given the small sample size, Johnson will need to show NBA teams he can continue to grow from the charity stripe, especially given his play style as an aggressive, physical interior player who is surely going to draw fouls at the pro level.Johnson’s physical profile easily makes him one of the most intriguing rookies in the NBA next season; he had the highest maximum vertical (39 inches) among forwards at the NBA Combine, eclipsed an 8-foot-11 standing reach and was measured at 6-foot-9 without shoes. He is also a proven winner at every level he has played in, winning a sectional championship and Southland title as a senior in high school, winning a gold medal in the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup and winning the National Championship at Michigan.Simply put, Johnson is a game-wrecker who has not reached anywhere close to his potential. That is what makes him an exciting prospect.

Bowen Byram trade grades: Who won the Blackhawks and Sabres deal?
The Buffalo Sabres are deep with defensemen and face losing Bowen Byram after this year thanks to free agency. So of course he was going to be a big name in trade talks, which led up to this point: He was dealt on Tuesday to the Chicago Blackhawks in yet another deal involving top picks in the 2026 draft. For the Blackhawks, it's a huge step in the right direction for a team hoping to be a playoff squad in the near future. And for the Sabres? They'll get some draft capital and a player, with the assumption that their blueline can withstand the loss of Byram.Who won this trade? What are the details? As usual, let's hand out some trade grades for the Hawks and Sabres.Sabres and Blackhawks trade detailsSabres get: 2026 first-round pick (fourth overall), 2026 second-round pick, D Louis CrevierBlackhawks get: D Bowen Byram, F Jordan GreenwayBlackhawks trade gradeChicago lacked a true No. 1 blueliner. Now? They paid a ton to get one, but given that he's only 25 and he's coming off a career season, this is the kind of move you want to make to take a young core to the next level. You have to wonder what's going on in the 2026 NHL Draft that's causing young, rising teams to trade their picks, but the point here is fairly simple: If the talent wasn't going to be there at No. 4, then you trade for a young two-way defenseman who will be in Chicago for the long term. GRADE: A-Sabres trade gradeTrading away an expiring contract at a position where you have strength is some good business for the Sabres. Losng Byram for nothing would have been rough. And the return is really good. The No. 4 pick could give them an instant impact player, while the ginormous Crevier (6-foot-8) had a pretty good year (seven goals, 25 points) in his third NHL season. An all-around good trade here. A.J. McKee: Fight IQ key to beating Salamat Isbulaev at PFL San Diego
A.J. McKee believes victory will depend on one big factor when facing undefeated Salamat Isbulaev.McKee (24-2), a former Bellator champion, takes on Isbulaev (10-0) in the main event of PFL San Diego (ESPN2/ESPN+) – which takes place Saturday at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Although the undefeated record might intimidate some, McKee sees it as a plus. He believes Isbulaev is lacking in experience, and that will show during their lightweight clash."I think the fight IQ is what makes the difference in that situation," McKee told MMA Junkie Radio. "I've had almost triple the amount of fights. So the fight IQ, the awareness, I think those are going to be big keys that are going to implement a big change in this fight. Yeah, that's going to be a big key, just being able to assess where I'm at, what's going on and being comfortable in every position. I don't think he's going to be comfortable on the feet. And if he is, then we're going to have some fun. I know he's going to want to take me down. That's just what he does. That's kind of his game plan. But I also don't think he's fought anybody with the ground game that I have or the scrambles. I think if, and when, we do hit the ground, the chain wrestling, the grappling. I think he's going to be surprised at what's being thrown at him on top of the striking."On top of bringing twice as much professional experience as his opponent, McKee also sees some flaws in Isbulaev that he can exploit."There's some loopholes in his game," Isbulaev said. "There's some flaws in his game as well as anybody's game. That's the amazing thing about mixed martial arts. I think he's good, but I don't think he's that good. I don't know what his game plan is; he's got a lot to prepare for as well. I think this is one of those fights where it's just like, I just got to go do what I do best, and that's kick ass and take names, go a hundred miles an hour, and just break him."This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: A.J. What Caleb Wilson said after being drafted by the Chicago Bulls
Caleb Wilson was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the No. 4 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft on Tuesday, June 23, in Brooklyn. The former UNC basketball star spoke with Lisa Salters following being selected, surrounded by his parents Jerry and Sabrina Wilson at Barclays Center. The Atlanta native set UNC freshman records for the highest scoring average (19.8 ppg), 20-point games (17) and reached double figures in each of his 24 games as a Tar Heel. He became the first UNC player to score 20 or more points in six straight games and earned All-American honors. His 9.4 rebounding average and 11 double-doubles are second-most for a Tar Heel freshman behind Antawn Jamison."That kid got here by hard work, believing in himself and having a great support system," Wilson said. "I kept tunnel vision, kept working, now I'm starting to see red."UNC's first top-five selection since 2005, Wilson was a one-and-done star in Chapel Hill and was the first UNC player to lead a team in points (19.8), rebounds (9.4) and assists (2.7) per game. He started 24 games for the Tar Heels before a pair of hand injuries ended his season, missing the final nine games of the year with a broken bone in his left hand and a broken thumb in his right hand. "I feel great," Wilson said. "I feel like that happened for a reason. I'm grateful for the opportunity to play in the NBA. I feel like if that would've never happened, I wouldn't be in the position I'm in now."Anna Snyder covers Duke for The Fayetteville Observer as part of the USA TODAY Network. Washington Wizards select AJ Dybantsa No. 1 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft
In what is considered one of the most talented classes in recent memory, the Washington Wizards selected BYU small forward AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick of the NBA Draft. Heading into Thursday's draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Wizards were believed to be deciding between Dybantsa and Kansas phenom combo guard Darryn Peterson. The Utah Jazz then took Peterson at No. 2. The Memphis Grizzlies selected Duke forward Cameron Boozer at No. 3. Boozer is following in the footsteps of his famous father, Carlos Boozer, who also played at Duke before a successful NBA career. At No. 4, the Chicago Bulls chose North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson. Dybantsa appeared to say a quick prayer after his name was announced, then went on stage to greet Commissioner Adam Silver and slipped on a black Wizards hat that matched nicely with his black suit. He will join a Wizards team that has struggled to find its footing in recent years, making only one playoff appearance in the last eight seasons due to a series of misfires on the roster front. But the Wizards will be looking for a fresh start with a team built around Dybantsa, star point guard Trae Young — who agreed to a four-year, $212 million deal earlier this week — and big man Anthony Davis, who the Wizards traded for in February.Dybantsa averaged 25.5 points last season at BYU, highlighted by a 43-point effort that broke BYU's freshman scoring record. At 6-foot-9 and 217 pounds, Dybantsa has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant, who happens to be his favorite player. Durant grew up in the Washington area. The Wizards desperately need Dybantsa to prove he can make them contenders in a competitive Eastern Conference that just saw the New York Knicks win their first NBA title in 53 years, and then saw superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat. The last time the Wizards had the No. 1 overall pick was in 2010, when they took point guard John Wall. The five-time All-Star had a solid career that was ultimately derailed by injuries. Wizards fans will be hoping Dybantsa has a better tenure. Some thought Peterson had the most talent in the class, but the guard missed 11 games during the season because of injuries and illness, potentially creating some questions that Dybantsa didn't have.In taking Wilson, the Bulls drafted a player from North Carolina in the first round for the third time. It worked out pretty well the first two times.Chicago selected Michael Jordan with the No. 3 pick in 1984, and the Hall of Fame guard led the franchise to six NBA championships in the 1990s.The Bulls took Coby White at No. 7 in 2019. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 15.4 points in six-plus seasons with the team before he was traded to Charlotte in February. Many experts believed any possible chaos or surprises in the draft would start at the fifth pick or later, because Dybantsa, Peterson, Boozer and Wilson were widely considered to be the top four prospects. With that No. 5 pick — which the Los Angeles Clippers acquired the rights to after a trade with the Indiana Pacers — the Clippers took Illinois guard Keaton Wagler. In his lone college season, in which he led the Fighting Illini to the Final Four, Wagler shot 40% from 3-point range, 80% from the foul line, and averaged 4.2 assists per game. But what might have tipped the scale for the Clippers was his size. He stands 6-foot-5 without shoes, making him one of the tallest guards in this draft class. The draft host Brooklyn Nets then went with Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. at No. 6.

Carlos Queiroz jokes ‘VAR went for a coffee’ for Ghana penalty claim
Ghana boss Carlos Queiroz joked that the video assistant referee must have gone for a coffee after claiming England escaped a penalty and red card in Tuesday’s World Cup clash. After both teams won their Group L openers, the well-drilled Black Stars sat back and frustrated Thomas Tuchel’s men on an overcast afternoon in Massachusetts.England dominated possession and had 19 shots as the game finished 0-0 at Boston Stadium, where Ghana’s appeals for a late penalty for Ezri Konsa’s challenge on Prince Adu fell on deaf ears. The substitute had been hurt shortly before that in a collision with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who was awarded a free-kick rather than penalized.Ghana head coach Queiroz looked towards a FIFA official in the post-match press conference and said: “I’m not sure VAR is still working in the World Cup. We still have VAR? It’s working?“I have some doubts about that because another penalty that they need give to Ghana, a clear penalty against England (was missed).”American official Armando Villarreal was VAR for Tuesday’s match in Foxborough, where Said Martinez of Honduras was referee.Queiroz continued: “We had our chances to the point that they’re lucky. They’re very lucky.“Once again, VAR went for a coffee. It’s natural, I would like to also take my coffees once in a while, but it was a clear penalty, red card.“You have any doubts about that? You guys who saw the game have any doubts about that or is it only me that was in the game?“At the end of the day, that’s why I say it was a fair result.“They play more time with the ball, we fight more, we fight better, we create our chances, they have chances at the end.“I think they are happy and I am happy also with the draw.“I’m sorry for my sarcasm, but if I say these kind of things seriously they punish me, so I hope you understand that I’m joking.”

Social media reacts to Caleb Wilson's 2026 NBA Draft Selection
The 2026 NBA Draft rolled around Tuesday night, with former UNC superstar Caleb Wilson projected as a highly-anticipated lottery pick. When the fourth overall selection rolled around, Wilson became a Chicago Bull, following in the footsteps of fellow North Carolina alum and NBA GOAT Michael Jordan.Wilson quickly rose to collegiate basketball stardom early during his lone season in Chapel Hill, giving the Tar Heels that difference-maker they needed to contend in a much-improved ACC. Wilson ended his season averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, with double-doubles a commonality. Two separate injuries prematurely ended Wilson's season, but long after he proved himself as a future NBA Draft pick. Analysts debated Wilson's projected selection heading up to the Draft, with debate he could overtake fellow lottery picks AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer, but Chicago is the best possible landing spot for Wilson. With highlight-reel dunks, a strong rebounding ability, lockdown defense and versatility to play anywhere 1-5, Wilson is NBA-ready. Detroit Tigers, Game 79: One thing I loved, one thing I didn't
Freelance writer Andrew Graham gives his quick takes on the Tigers' 4-3 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday:One thing I lovedLet's be romantic about baseball and love Ben Malgeri getting his first MLB hit in his debut after getting called up earlier on Tuesday. And Malgeri didn't waste any time to do it. The outfielder came up for his first at bat in the bottom of the third inning with Zach McKinstry standing on first base and hit the first pitch he saw, a fastball on the outside edge that Malgeri sliced into right field. McKinstry moved to third and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. So, on top of getting his first major league hit right away, Malgeri got the Tigers' offense in scoring position to pounce on an error. He ended up scoring a run later in the inning, too.Detroit needs any jolt it can get, and it's a great moment for Malgeri and his family in the stands, to boot. See, how can you not be romantic about baseball?Malgeri gets his first MLB hit on the first pitch he sees! pic.twitter.com/6MFuEByq1i— Detroit Tigers (@tigers) June 23, 2026One thing I didn'tThe bottom of the sixth inning unfolded into a prime chance for Detroit to punish the Yankees and retake a lead that had been coughed up in the top of the frame. Dillon Dingler hit a leadoff double to the left-center gap and Matt Vierling legged out a double to score him on a hit to the left field corner as Cody Bellinger didn't play it cleanly.Instead, the heart of the Tigers' order and two pinch hitters struck out, struck out, walked, and then grounded out to first.First was Riley Greene, who got behind 1-2 and struck out swinging on a 2-2 slider. Then the Yankees changed pitchers and Spencer Torkelson faced right Fernando Cruz. Torkelson got out to a 3-1 count, then struck out swinging on a splitter after Cruz dotted the bottom rail with a fastball for strike two. Then AJ Hinch opted to pinch hit a pair of lefties, Kerry Carpenter for Jahmai Jones and Colt Keith for Hao-Yu Lee. Carpenter walked, as Cruz seemingly wanted nothing to do with the lefty, putting runners on first and second. With no place to put Keith, Cruz had to pitch to him, going down 3-0 before coming back with two strikes to fill the count. Keith fouled off one pitch then pulled a ground ball to first base for an easy out as Detroit clawed back a run but couldn't score another with a runner on second and no outs. The inability to get the breakthrough hit — or really the parade of hits that follow — has plagued this offense for much of this year, and that sixth inning was a textbook example. To boot, Detroit got doubled off from the outfield on the base paths in the seventh inning. NBA Draft: Thunder trade for Iowa star Bennett Stirtz at No. 16 with Grizzlies, who load up on picks in opening round
The Oklahoma City Thunder landed Iowa star Bennett Stirtz in the first trade of the night on Tuesday. The Thunder selected Stirtz with the No. 16 overall pick in the NBA Draft on Tuesday, thanks to a late trade they made with the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies briefly got the No. 17 overall pick, but dealt that away to the Detroit Pistons almost immediately to move back to No. 21. That netted them three additional future second round picks. While the full list of picks that the Grizzlies secured is not yet known, the organization ended up gaining five second-round picks to move back just five spots.Stirtz averaged 19.8 points and 4.4 assists per game last season with the Hawkeyes. He transferred into Iowa City from Drake, following head coach Ben McCollum after he made the jump last summer, too. The All-Big Ten guard played nearly 38 minutes per game and helped the Hawkeyes reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987. They ended up falling to Illinois in that round of the tournament. The move came just days after the Thunder sent Aaron Wiggins to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for two future second-round picks, the first in 2030 and the second in 2032. That trade could end up saving the Thunder more than $60 million. The Thunder also selected Michigan big man Aday Mara at No. 12 overall on Tuesday night. The 7-foot-3 center was the best true big man in the draft class, and could be a possible answer for San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama in the Western Conference. Wembanyama and the Spurs beat the Thunder to reach the NBA Finals earlier this year, ending the Thunders’ hopes for back-to-back titles after their championship in 2025.The Pistons ended up getting Stanford guard Ebuka Okorie at No. 17. Okorie averaged 23.2 points per game while shooting nearly 47% from the field with the Cardinal. Memphis went just 25-57 last season, the first under head coach Tuomas Iisalo, and missed the playoffs. This post will be updated with more information shortly.

Detroit Pistons trade up in NBA Draft to No. 17, grab G Ebuka Okorie

Ghosts of Gijon linger as new World Cup format encourages collusion
Algeria face Austria on Saturday, 44 years on from the "Disgrace of Gijon" (Stu Forster)Algeria have waited 44 years for a shot at World Cup revenge against Austria, but the clash is one of many in the final round of group games where sides could settle for a mutually beneficial outcome.Austria's 1-0 defeat to West Germany at the 1982 World Cup has lived on in World Cup infamy as "the disgrace of Gijon" after the teams played out a result that would take both through at the expense of Algeria on goal difference. After worldwide condemnation and a fruitless formal complaint by Algeria, FIFA decided that in subsequent tournaments the final two games in each group would be played simultaneously. But the expansion to a 48-team tournament, and with it the return for the first time since 1994 of some third-place sides progressing to the knockout stage, has opened the door to questions over the sporting integrity of the competition once more.Four points is almost certain to be enough to go through at least as one of the eight best third-placed sides from the 12 groups.Australia and Paraguay face off on Thursday locked on three points after both beat Turkey and lost to co-hosts the United States. A stalemate in Santa Clara near San Francisco would allow both to progress."I think you’re cheating the game in a way if you’re looking to just call a truce with 10 minutes to go. That doesn't seem right in my opinion," said Australia defender Jason Geria."We could both progress with a point, that's evident, but I don't think it's in us to just concede or just take the foot off the gas."Egypt's meeting with Iran in Seattle on Friday is another where both could benefit from just a point.Iran have overcome huge challenges due to the conflict between Tehran and the USA to remain unbeaten in their opening two games.A third draw would likely be enough to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in Iran's history as at least one of the best third-placed sides.A point could also be enough for Egypt to win Group G, so long as Belgium do not beat New Zealand by more than two goals. On top of the possibile collusion between sides to obtain a favourable outcome, another change to FIFA's rules for this World Cup already means the third group game will be a dead rubber for far more nations. For the first time head-to-head records instead of goal difference is being used as the tiebreaker for countries level on points.Mexico, USA, Germany and Argentina are already guaranteed to win their groups, while Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan and Panama know they are out.- 64-team World Cup inevitable? -There is a further discrepancy in that teams playing in the final groups to finish will have a far better idea of what is required to be one of the best third-placed sides. With three points from their opening two games, Scotland face Brazil in Miami on Wednesday in one of the first groups to finish not knowing if a narrow defeat will be enough to progress from the group stages for the first time.By contrast, Algeria and Austria will know exactly what is needed when the final group games kick off on Saturday. The difficulties presented by narrowing 48 teams to 32 has already led to suggestions that a 64-team World Cup is inevitable. That would allow the traditional format of the top two from four-team groups to progress to the last 32.The Athletic reported last year that the idea has already been floated by a delegation of influential South American leaders ahead of the 2030 World Cup.Although the proposal has been met with resistance, an even bigger tournament may prove financially irresistible for FIFA.The largest World Cup in history is still missing two of the globe's biggest commercial markets in China and India, while four-time winners Italy failed to qualify for a third successive tournament.Despite concerns over a dilution in quality, the World Cup's expansion has provided some of the stories of the tournament. Cape Verde can still qualify after drawing with Spain and Uruguay, Curacao held Ecuador to earn a first World Cup point, while the bagpipe-playing, kilt-wearing hordes of Scotland's Tartan Army charmed Boston and drank its bars dry.The price to pay for an imperfect format may be to come this week as the group stages lurch to an anticlimactic conclusion.kca/gj

Congo fan who stands as living statue of independence leader Lumumba makes it to World Cup
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) — Congo’s famous living statue finally made his World Cup debut on Tuesday.Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, who gained fame during the Africa Cup of Nations for posing as a statue of Congo’s assassinated independence leader Patrice Lumumba for the entirety of games, attended Congo's match against Colombia after missing its opener against Portugal because of Ebola quarantine requirements.Lumumba Vea, as the sharply dressed supporter is known for his resemblance to the slain leader, was at his seat about an hour before the game at Estadio Akron. He wore a bright red jacket and tie, yellow shirt and blue pants. When the game began, he stood motionless on a pedestal behind the Congo bench with his right arm raised. He did not want to be interview but nodded and smiled when asked if he was happy to have finally made it to the World Cup.Congo played Portugal to a 1-1 draw last week in Houston.Nkuka Mboladinga also missed Congo’s World Cup playoff match against Jamaica earlier this year — when his nation secured a return to the tournament after 52 years — because he was unable to get a visa in time. He had traveled to Kenya and then Ethiopia in a bid to get a visa for the game, which was also played in Guadalajara.Nkuka Mboladinga became a social media sensation at the Africa Cup for posing as a statue of Lumumba on a pedestal with his right hand raised and standing still throughout games.Lumumba was an activist who helped to end Belgium’s colonial rule over Congo in 1960. He became the newly independent country’s first prime minister and was seen as one of Africa’s most promising leaders, but he was assassinated within a year during a struggle against a Belgian-backed secessionist movement in the mineral-rich Katanga region.A Belgian court in March ordered a 93-year-old former diplomat to stand trial for the slaying. Etienne Davignon, who previously denied wrongdoing, is the last living among 10 Belgians suspected of involvement in the killing and has been charged with “participation in war crimes” for his role in the “unlawful detention and transfer” of Lumumba.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup

Why Raptors drafted Allen Graves after he was a bench player at Santa Clara
Why Raptors drafted Allen Graves after he was a bench player at Santa Clara originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Toronto Raptors ended up staying put at No. 19 in the 2026 NBA Draft. And with their first-round selection, they chose Allen Graves -- who was a bench player at Santa Clara. It's a bit confusing on paper, because how can a player go from being sixth man at Santa Clara to being a first-round NBA Draft pick?Well, you have to be Graves.MORE: Giannis legacy with the Bucks remains intactWhy did the Raptors draft Allen Graves?Graves may not have started games at Santa Clara, but he finished them. He's one of the draft's best all-around players. At 6-foot-7, Graves does pretty much everything well, and so the Raptors weren't concerned that Santa Clara decided to use him as a sixth man and not a starter.Graves shot 41% from 3-point range, which is obviously a huge skill by itself no matter what else works out.He can score, he can defend, he can shoot -- that's what the Raptors see.So yeah, he comes from a mid-major. But that's a school that has recently sent Jalen Williams and Brandin Podziemski to the NBA in the last five years. The Raptors will hope Graves grows into a starter for them. And to do that, he might not have needed to do that much in college, apparently.More NBA news:This is what a Timberwolves trade for Derrick White would look likeWarriors want Kawhi Leonard, but there's a problemHow Heat can unite Giannis with his brothersKnicks had a superstar opportunity but didn't go for itHow Bulls drafting Caleb Wilson ends the Patrick Williams bust story

Alabama basketball guard Labaron Philon selected in 2026 NBA Draft
For the first time since 2023, the Alabama Crimson Tide have a player headed to the NBA via the NBA Draft. As was widely expected in the lead-up to the draft, former Crimson Tide guard Labaron Philon became a first-round pick on Tuesday. The Philadelphia 76ers selected him with the 22nd overall pick. The 6-foot-4 guard is the first Alabama player drafted since Noah Clowney was selected with the 21st overall pick by the Brooklyn Nets in 2023. Brandon Miller was previously selected with the No. 2 overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets that year. Philon was a two-year starter for the Crimson Tide who initially declared for the draft after his freshman season in Tuscaloosa. He ultimately withdrew and returned for his sophomore season, in which he averaged 22 points, five assists and 3.5 rebounds a night while playing in33 games. The Mobile native shot 50.1 percent from the field and made 39.9 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. Philon initially signed with the Kansas Jayhawks in 2023 before requesting a release from his National Letter of Intent. He then committed to Alabama in April 2024. Philon was ranked the No. 32 overall recruit in the class of 2024 by ESPN and 247Sports, which also ranked him as the No. 3 point guard in the nation. NBA Draft: Spurs gamble on shot-blocking Kentucky F Jayden Quaintance to pair alongside Victor Wembanyama
The San Antonio Spurs arrived to the NBA Finals ahead of schedule this season after knocking off the reining champion Oklahoma City Thunder. When they got there, they weren’t ready as the New York Knicks staged repeated comebacks to beat the Spurs in five games for the NBA championship. On Tuesday, they added size, length and shot-blocking up front with the 20th pick in the draft in selecting Kentucky forward Jayden Quaintance. But Quaintance may not be able to contribute immediately or consistently as a rookie.Quaintance played just four games at Kentucky as a sophomore after transferring from Arizona State due to a devastating right knee injury that he sustained in February 2025 that included an ACL tear, meniscus tear and a fracture. He returned to live basketball with Kentucky in December, but was limited to four games with the Wildcats due to ongoing complications with the knee injury. The Spurs are betting on his recovery and his upside to be a defensive force alongside Victor Wembanyama on the front line. In 24 games at Arizona State as a freshman before his injury, Quaintance averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.1 steals per game. If he can recover and return to that form, he could pair with Wembnayama for perhaps the most intimidating defensive front line in the NBA. With the pick, the Spurs are demonstrating patience and a long-haul view rather than overreacting to their shortcomings that surfaced against the Knicks.

Memphis trades back twice from 16 to 21, gets five second-round picks while Oklahoma City, Detroit move up
This is a nice bit of work by the Memphis front office — they moved back five spots in the NBA Draft and picked up five second-round picks. It's also a little confusing, a multi-step process, all of it broken by Shams Charania of ESPN.First, Memphis agreed to swap the No. 16 and No. 17 draft picks with Oklahoma City, and the Thunder threw in two second-round picks so they could move up and select Iowa point guard Bennett Stirtz. The Memphis Grizzlies select Bennett Stirtz with the 16th pick! pic.twitter.com/GnhRVlw6YM— NBA Draft (@NBADraft) June 24, 2026Memphis wasn't done. It then agreed to swap the No. 17 pick with Detroit for the No. 21 pick — and the Pistons gave the Grizzlies three more second-round picks.Detroit then drafted Stanford point guard Ebuka Okorie, an interesting fit because he is the best driver in this class, and bringing him in off the bench behind Cade Cunningham keeps putting pressure on the rim. That said, Okorie's finishing and decision-making when he gets into the paint need to improve. With that No. 21 pick, the Grizzlies selected Karim Lopez, the first Mexico-born player ever taken in the first round, who played professionally in New Zealand last year. He's a big body and an aggressive rebounder who will come off the bench for the Grizzlies.Memphis already got its big draft win of the night, selecting Cameron Boozer with the No. 3 pick. The young Grizzlies front line is now Cedric Coward, Boozer and Zach Edey (once healthy), that's a quality young group to start building around.

‘Getting My Revenge’ – Songchainoi Chases Redemption In Rematch With Numsurin At ONE Friday Fights 160
Songchainoi Kiatsongrit has been through the fire, pushed a ONE World Champion to his limits, and now he has one burning priority before he gets another shot at the gold. The Thai dynamo faces arch-rival Numsurin Chor Ketwina in the main event of ONE Friday Fights 160 in Asia primetime on Friday, June 26, at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.View this post on InstagramThe two Thai atomweights are no strangers. They first clashed at ONE Friday Fights 122 in 2025, a contest that ended in a majority decision loss for Songchainoi and snapped his nine-fight winning streak.Songchainoi’s road since that first defeat to Numsurin has been one of steady, determined rebuilding. He bounced back with a win to close out 2025, then stepped onto the biggest stage of his career at ONE SAMURAI 1 in April this year, pushing ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Nadaka across five hard rounds before falling short on the judges’ scorecards. It was a performance that proved he belongs at the very top of the division, and one that left him with both lessons to absorb and motivation to burn.Songchainoi reflected:“Losing to Nadaka taught me a lot of lessons. I know I have to go back to the gym and train even harder if I want to get another crack at him.”View this post on InstagramBefore he gets another crack at Nadaka, he must deal with Numsurin. The 25-year-old Songchainoi from Kiatsongrit Muay Thai Gym carries a 10-2 ONE record and a career ledger of 60-20, built on relentless pressure and punishing punching power that has made him one of the most feared atomweights in the weekly event series. He knows exactly how their first meeting unraveled, and he has spent a long time thinking about why.He said:“I’m stoked to get this rematch with Numsurin. It was a shame losing that first fight because I got careless. I let my guard down, and he caught me with a solid right hook that dropped me for a count. That completely flipped the momentum.”View this post on InstagramNumsurin, however, is no ordinary opponent. The 30-year-old from TDed99 brings a 105-21 striking record and a 6-2 ONE mark into this rematch, including his own failed challenge for the inaugural ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Championship. Songchainoi has been through the fire at the highest level and arrived stronger for it. But the mental toll of that first promotional loss ran deeper than just the result, and the support of those closest to him proved just as important as any session in the gym.He said:“After losing to Numsurin, I was pretty devastated. I’d never lost to anyone in ONE before, so I might have been a bit too overconfident. When things went sideways, my mental state took a pretty hard hit. But I got so much support from my family, my girlfriend, and everyone at the gym. They really helped me get through that tough time.”View this post on InstagramSongchainoi Promises A Different Outcome On June 26Songchainoi Kiatsongrit is not interested in making excuses for what happened at ONE Friday Fights 122, and he is not about to let anyone else make them for him either. When the subject of that defeat comes up, the Thai standout is very clear. He got careless, he paid the price, and the responsibility sits entirely with him. But that accountability comes paired with a cast-iron belief that the rematch will end differently, built on the durability and chin that have carried him through 80 professional fights. He said:“When people say Numsurin got a fluke win, I don’t really look at it that way. It was on me — I was the one who got careless. Mistakes happen in this sport.“I’m confident I’ve got the better chin and the greater durability. It definitely won’t be easy for him to knock me out. Words are cheap, we’ll have to see about that once we’re in the ring. But I’m confident I’m getting my revenge.”View this post on InstagramThe stakes on June 26 involve much more than pride and personal rivalry. With the ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Title now firmly established and both fighters having already tasted the championship stage, whoever wins this rematch puts themselves in pole position for another shot at the belt. He offered:“This fight is massive for both of us. It’s basically a battle for the top contender spot to see who gets to face Nadaka next. I’m incredibly focused on getting this win so I can build my momentum back up for another title shot. Now that the promotion is putting the belt on the line, becoming the champion is the only goal I care about.”View this post on InstagramSource

The 6-foot-9 wing shot 32.6 percent from 3-point range in New Zealand last season, though he still has room to develop the rest of his game. For now, Lopez slots in behind fellow rookie Cam Boozer and forward Cedric Coward on the Grizzlies' depth chart.History of Mexicans in NBA DraftPrior to Lopez, only once in NBA history was a Mexican-born player drafted in the NBA, as Eduardo Najera was taken in the 2000 second round, No. 38 overall, by the Houston Rockets, but was later traded to the Dallas Mavericks that night. Besides Najera and Lopez, every other Mexican-born player to play in the NBA went undrafted.Horacio Llamas was the first Mexican to play in the NBA, as he went undrafted in 1996 and later signed with the Phoenix Suns. Gustavo Ayon and Jorge Gutierrez both went undrafted in 2007 and 2012, respectively, and it took a few years before they made their NBA debuts. There is a notable Mexican-American player who was a first round picks in the draft, as the Miami Heat took Jaime Jacquez Jr. with pick No. 18 in 2023. Additionally, Juan Toscano-Anderson went undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft. However, both Jacquez and Toscano-Anderson were born in California.

Texas basketball’s Dailyn Swain drafted 15th overall by the Chicago Bulls

Mandatory Copyright Notice: Copyright 2026 NBAE (Photo by David L. Nemec/NBAE via Getty Images) | NBAE via Getty Images With the 15th overall pick in 2026 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls picked Texas basketball TK Dailyn Swain. He’s now the Longhorns’ 21st player to hear his name called in the first round.Prior to his selection, Swain entered this year’s draft as a chin-scratching, but tantalizing, wing prospects in the 2026 class. He has his single season at Texas to thank as he rose nearer and nearer the top of the draft boards.Swain began his college career at Xavier. However, Swain would eventually part ways with the university to join Texas men’s basketball head coach Sean Miller in his first year leading the program. A change of scenery would do wonders for Swain; nearly on day one, he became one of the team’s focal points, as Swain, at 6-foot-7, average 17.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 54.2% from the field. By season’s end, Swain led the Longhorns in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and minutes played. And as a result, Swain become the only player in a Division 1 conference to lead his team in all the previously mentioned categories. He was also cited as just the third player in the past three decades to average at least 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game in a season, according to Texas Athletics. In his final NCAA season, Swain and his teammates managed to end the season in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, as the SEC named him “Newcomer of the Year” and to its second-team all-conference team. Swain was also a finalist for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. It seems NBA scouts have not underestimated Swain’s size and strength. And while his shooting along the perimeter could improve—and with NBA-quality conditioning and coaching staff, it almost undoubtedly will improve in the coming years—it’s Swain’s raw athleticism, aggressive defensive approach, and his roles in playmaking that likely sold him to staffers associated with the sport’s highest level of play.

NBA Draft 2026: Defending champion Knicks trade back with Lakers, who pick Cameron Carr at No. 24
The NBA champion New York Knicks made a move at the 2026 NBA Draft. They dropped back exactly one spot, exchanging the No. 24 pick for the Los Angeles Lakers' No. 25 pick. The price of the pick swap will reportedly be only cash considerations from the Lakers. The Lakers proceeded to use the No. 24 pick on Baylor wing Cameron Carr, the No. 23 player on the big board of Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor. With Los Angeles always looking for shooting around Luka Dončić and in need of athleticism overall, it seems to be a natural pick.More on Carr from O'Connor:You could have watched every Tennessee game for two years and genuinely not known that Carr existed. Then he transferred to Baylor, and led the team in scoring, shot nearly 40% from 3 on high volume, and looked like a 3-and-D role player who also has blossoming skills off the dribble. With NBA genes in his blood, as the son of former player Chris Carr, Cameron has the skills to make it in the NBA. But at 184 pounds with not a ton of games under his belt, he's going to get introduced to the NBA's physicality in a way college basketball never did.The Knicks then took Spanish wing Sergio De Larrea, whose NBA ETA is TBD but presents an intriguing long-term value at 20 years old. He's ranked at No. 20 on the big board and is currently playing in the ACB Finals for Valencia.O'Connor's breakdown:De Larrea is a tall playmaking wing with major feel and a knockdown jumper who thrives within team concepts. He suffered a dislocated shoulder that ended his 2024-25 season and removed him from draft boards, but it ended up a blessing in disguise since he returned with a bigger role and stronger production for a great team in the EuroLeague. With size, smarts, and defensive versatility, he could carve out a role in the NBA if his international skill can translate. There's no telling what either player will turn into in the NBA, but the trade is part of an offseason in which the Knicks are trying to keep their championship squad as much as possible without going over the second apron, which team owner James Dolan has treated as a non-starter.

Ranking Big Ten recruiting classes via average commit distance
The Big Ten remains at the forefront of the recruiting world. As commitments continue to fly in this summer, the league continues to see its top programs stack impressive pledge lists. But which schools are scoring more commitments from prospects closer to home? With the conference now going from coast to coast, there’s plenty of “Big Ten backyards” that programs need to protect. Rivals takes a look at which Big Ten recruiting classes are the closest to home on average:1. IowaAverage Commit Distance: 240 milesIn-State: 46%Rivals Industry Team Ranking: No. 42It’s no surprise to see Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes target local talent. Six of the 13 commits in the class thus far are inside Iowa state lines. That includes the two highest-ranked prospects in the fold: Three-star LB Gavin Strecker and three-star TE Jaxx DeJean. There’s also three Illinois recruits in the class, with legacy three-star DL Tommy Riordan headlining that trio.2. IndianaAverage Commit Distance: 314 milesIn-State: 19%Rivals Industry Team Ranking: No. 30The pull of Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers is now far greater and will surely lead to Indiana winning recruiting battles nationwide. The current 2027 haul for Indiana does have a classic Midwest flavor, however. Recruits from Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio are all featured alongside three in-state pledges. Four-star EDGE Myles Smith is the No. 6 recruit in Michigan, four-star OT Mason McDermott is the No. 5 player in Indiana and four-star DL Reinaldo Perez is the No. 12 prospect in Ohio.3. Michigan StateAverage Commit Distance: 345 milesIn-State: 20%Rivals Industry Team Ranking: No. 45Pat Fitzgerald is looking to bring Michigan State back to the upper echelon of the Big Ten. The Spartans don’t often stray too far away from the Midwest on the recruiting trail and their 2027 class echoes that thus far. The states of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio account for 11 of the Spartans’ 15 commits. Four-star OT Caleb Johnson, the No. 2 player in Indiana, is the lone blue-chipper in the MSU class to date. Three-star OT Jack Carlson is the top in-state commit in the mix.4. IllinoisAverage Commit Distance: 377 milesIn-State: 50%Rivals Industry Team Ranking: No. 55Bret Bielema and his staff would love to make a move up the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings heading into the fall, but they have done a solid job with in-state recruiting so far this cycle. There’s seven in-state prospects in the Illinois class, including four-star CB Justin Johnson, three-star OT Mason Halliman, three-star OT Soren Fifer and three-star WR Bennett Konkey. Johnson is the No. 11 player in the Prairie State.5. RutgersAverage Commit Distance: 437 milesIn-State: 10%Rivals Industry Team Ranking: No. 41Greg Schiano remains in the saddle in Piscataway and Rutgers is working to build a notable recruiting class this cycle. The Scarlet Knights are, of course, locking in pledges from some of the best in the Northeast. That includes three-star WR Jamar Taylor, the No. 2 player in Delaware, and three-star WR Isaiah Alvarez, the No. 23 player in New Jersey. Plenty of prospects from Pennsylvania and New York are in the fold, too.Big Ten Average Commit Distance Nos. 6-186. Purdue — 480 miles7. Penn State — 490 miles8. Northwestern — 506 miles9. Wisconsin — 537 miles10. Ohio State — 554 miles11. Michigan — 582 miles12. Minnesota — 619 miles13. UCLA — 636 miles14. Nebraska — 652 miles15. USC — 710 miles16. Maryland — 767 miles17. Over the last eleven years, St. John’s program star after St. John’s program star went undrafted, never realizing the lifelong dream of hearing their name called on that faithful night in June. That drought ended on Tuesday with the selection of the Red Storm’s beloved team captain.Zuby Ejiofor was picked by the Atlanta Hawks with the 23rd overall selection in the first round of the 2026 NBA draft, making him the first Red Storm player selected in the draft since Sir’Dominic Pointer in 2015, and the program’s first opening-round selection since Moe Harkless in 2012.Tuesday’s selection was the culmination of years of hard work and unbridled determination by Ejiofor, who committed to Kansas as a four-star high school recruit out of Garland, Texas, and began his college basketball career as an end-of-the-bench center with the Jayhawks before developing into one of the sport’s elite big men at St. John’s.Ejiofor enters the NBA as one of the most accomplished players in St. John’s basketball history. In each of his two seasons as a full-time starter, he led the Red Storm to Big East tournament and regular season championships, a feat the program had never accomplished before. As a senior this past season, Ejiofor was not only incredible, but he was irreplaceable. The Johnnies’ two-time captain was the only high-major player to lead his team in scoring, field goal percentage, rebounds, assists, and blocks per game, averaging 16.3 points on 53.6% shooting, 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.2 blocks per contest. He also became the first player in Big East history to win Conference Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Player awards in the same season, while carrying the torch for the first St. John’s team to reach the NCAA tournament’s Sweet Sixteen since 1999.Ejiofor joins a young and scrappy Atlanta Hawks team that will mesh well with his physical style of play. Last season, the Hawks defied expectations following their mid-season trade of franchise face Trae Young, entering the playoffs as of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference. They bowed out in the first round to the New York Knicks in six games, owning the conciliatory distinction of being the only playoff team to win more than one game in a series against the eventual NBA champions. Barring expected moves for Jonathan Kuminga and Zaccharie Risacher, the former St. John’s star will battle for frontcourt minutes with starting center Onyeka Okongwu (15.2 points per game, 7.6 rebounds per game in 2025-26), forward Asa Newell (5.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg), and bench player Mouhamed Gueye (4.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg).

Meet Cameron Carr, Lakers rookie acquired in Knicks draft-day deal
Follow along for every pick of the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft. The Los Angeles Lakers acquired Baylor guard Cameron Carr, who was initially drafted by the New York Knicks with the 24th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft at the Barclays Center. The third-team All-Big 12 selection averaged 18.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season. The Lakers moved up one spot, sending the 25th overall pick and cash considerations to the Knicks. Los Angeles picked Spain guard Sergio De Larrea, the Spanish Super Tournament MVP for New York. The Lakers have not drafted in the first round since 2024. They drafted Lachlan Olbrich in the second round last year, but he was sent to the Chicago Bulls.Rob Pelinka, the team's president of basketball operations, and the front office will still have other decisions to make to push the organization forward. It will be the first time since 1979 that the Buss family was not the majority owner of the team, after the first full offseason under Mark Walter. Walter obtained majority ownership for $10 billion. The Buss family still owns 15% of the franchise. The sale was officially approved by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025.The Lakers must construct a winning strategy in order for the team to take another step forward and back on the path to a championship with Luka Doncic as the focal point. The Lakers finished the regular season with a 53-29 record and the fourth seed in the Western Conference. They got the best of the Houston Rockets in the first round, winning the first three games of the series before closing it out in Game 6. Then they were swept in the conference semifinals by the Oklahoma City Thunder without Doncic available due to injury. The order in which the Lakers make moves this offseason will be telling for the direction in which the franchise is trying to go.Here’s what’s left for the Lakers to do this offseason:Will the Lakers sign LeBron James?LeBron James is set to become a free agent when the league year ends on June 30. He will have one of a handful of options to make regarding his basketball future. If James decides he wants to continue playing and return for his 24th season in the NBA, the Lakers will have to explore the option of whether they want to keep him in Los Angeles. He would immediately become priority No. 1.The Lakers retain the rights to their own free agents, but the NBA does place a placeholder salary (known as a cap hold) against the team's salary cap to prevent other teams, such as L.A. in this case, from signing any other free agents before re-signing their own to avoid going over the cap.James is expected to have a $57.75 million cap hold. Will Austin Reaves return to Lakers?Reaves has been featured as a star player on the team’s roster, but he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and could potentially get $40 million annually. Reporter Dan Woike of The Athletic was told that Reaves could have interest from the Brooklyn Nets and is expected to receive a four-year deal worth $178.5 million. The Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks are expected to be among the other teams interested in acquiring Reaves. Both teams could create space to make competitive offers for the 6-foot-5 shooting guard.Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard, Jaxson Hayes and Maxi Kleber will also be unrestricted free agents. Deandre Ayton has a player option and could opt into another year on his contract with Los Angeles. He could also decide to become an unrestricted free agent. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Who is Cameron Carr? Meet Lakers rookie after trade with Knicks
