Olympic ski legend Bode Miller pleads not guilty after shock drugs arrest
Olympic gold medalist skier Bode Miller has entered a not guilty plea to a pair of misdemeanor drug charges following his arrest for possessing psilocybin mushrooms.Court records indicate Miller's arrest occurred on June 6 in eastern Idaho, with his not guilty plea to possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia entered the following week. Neither his attorney, Jeromy Stafford, nor his longtime representative, Lowell Taub, responded to requests for comment, and it remains unclear if Taub still represents Miller. Specific details regarding the circumstances of Miller's arrest are not outlined in the court documents. However, a probable cause statement from Fremont County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Hurt noted that Miller was found with a white dispensary bag containing 4.1 grams of the psychedelic substance.Legendary alpine skier Bode Miller pictured receiving an Inspiration award in January 2026 (Getty)Idaho maintains some of the nation's most stringent drug laws. Conversely, states like Colorado and Oregon have legalized psilocybin for therapeutic use, reflecting a growing interest among health advocates who suggest microdosing or therapeutic application could alleviate anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In April, President Donald Trump signed an executive order instructing the Food and Drug Administration and other federal bodies to accelerate research and ease restrictions on psychedelics. The FDA responded by announcing an ultra-fast review for three psychedelic drugs under development for mental health conditions.Known for his high-risk, high-reward approach to ski racing, the 48-year-old Miller earned six Olympic medals, including a super-combined gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games, alongside a career marked by numerous spectacular crashes. Miller is consoled by his wife after securing a share of bronze in the men’s Super-G in 2020 (AP)His final major competition was the 2015 World Championships in Beaver Creek, Colorado, where a severe wipeout in the super-G ended his race. Miller, cutting a gate too closely, hooked his left arm, sending him into an uncontrolled spiral. After his skis detached and he somersaulted down the slope, he regained composure, slowly rose, and waited for his skis. Once re-equipped, he descended the slope, waving to fans. He later required surgery for a torn right hamstring tendon, a result of his ski slicing him during the incident. Miller's illustrious career also includes 33 World Cup victories, two World Cup overall titles, and four world championship gold medals.

Copley graduate Jason Borchik leads USA men’s beach handball team
Men’s soccer fans are engrossed in the 2026 World Cup that is currently taking place in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The play on the pitch has been entertaining and spirited, but there is another world championship tournament taking place right now. That tournament is the 2026 Men’s Beach Handball World Championship in Zagreb, Croatia from June 23-28.Jason Borchik, a 2006 Copley High School graduate, is the captain of the United States men’s beach handball team. USA was scheduled to play against Portugal and Spain on Tuesday, June 23 and Iran on Wednesday, June 24 in preliminary matches. The top two teams advance to the knockout round.Borchik was a three-sport standout at Copley who started playing Indoor Handball during his time as a student in the United States Military Academy at West Point.“I didn’t know what it was,” Borchik said of handball during a telephone interview with the Akron Beacon Journal on June 16.“I was in a Computer Science class sitting with one of my classmates, and he said ‘You should come play handball.’ I was like, ‘What the heck is handball?’ He pulled up a YouTube video and showed me a clip of handball from the Olympics or something. I was like ‘This looks awesome. We have that here?” He said: ‘Yeah, I am on the team. You should come try it.’Borchik went to a practice and ended up playing on the team for the remainder of his time at West Point.Borchik, who is 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, earned three USA Indoor Handball collegiate club championships and played on the American team in the 2012 Pan American Championships in Argentina.“I loved playing handball a West Point,” Borchik said. “I had a great time doing that. My junior year, I got invited to tryout for the USA junior national team and played with them that summer. Then my senior year, I ended playing with the actual USA national team, and played on and off for a few years after that with the with the indoor national team.”Borchik, 38, lives in Austin, Texas with his wife, Laura, and their son, Sebastian.Borchik has been playing beach handball from 2020 to the present. He got his start at Hermosa Beach, California and regularly travels back there once a month to play.Borchik is a pivot for the USA national beach handball team.“I would say it is most comparable to a power forward in basketball,” Borchik said. “It’s a hybrid between a wing and a power forward in basketball where it is a primary scoring threat. There is a six-meter line and I play right along the six-meter line. The objective is you are trying to put the ball in the back of the net. I am trying to position myself in between the defenders.“There are three backs, a left wing, a center back, who is kind of the point guard, and then there is a right wing. The three of them are basically penetrating and kicking. They are trying to draw attention from the defense, and throw a pass to the line where then I can finish. In most competitions, I am either our leading scorer or second leading scorer. My role is to score.”Borchik is one of 10 players on USA’s roster for the Beach Handball World Championship, a tournament with 16 teams. The 2026 World Championship in Croatia is his third after helping the Americans finish 11th in 2022 in Greece and 13th in 2024 in China.Borchik played a key role in USA winning the North American / Caribbean championship in 2022, 2024 and 2026. He was named MVP in 2024.United States beach handball player Jason Borchik’s connection to CopleyJason Borchik is the second of Jim and Linda Borchik’s four sons. All four sons graduated from Copley High School: Jamie in 2003, Jason in 2006, Daniel in 2008 and David in 2011. Jim Borchik was an assistant principal at Copley from 1993-2016 and Copley’s athletic director from 2010-2016. He was also a teacher and basketball coach at Barberton High School for a decade prior to his run at Copley.Jason Borchik was inducted into the Copley High School Athletic Hall of Fame in December of 2025. He was a three-year varsity letter winner in football, basketball and baseball who earned All-Suburban League honors and served as a team captain in all three sports. He played quarterback in football, in the paint in basketball and was a first baseman and pitcher in baseball.Borchik was named the Akron Beacon Journal Student-Athlete of the Year in 2006. He graduated with a 3.9 GPA, ranking 13th in a class of 236.Borchik attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in 2010.From 2010 to 2020, Borchik served in the U.S. Army where he became a Sapper, a Ranger and a Green Beret. He rose to the rank of Captain, was deployed twice to Afghanistan and once to Colombia, earned two Bronze Star Medals and received an MBA from Northwestern.United States beach handball player Jason Borchik’s connection to baseballAway from the sand, Borchik is the Executive Vice President of Business Development for Home Run Dugout, an innovative baseball entertainment company featuring immersive, gamified batting bays and social venues.“Home Run Dugout is similar to Top Golf, but you are not hitting a ball into an open range like Top Golf,” Borchik said. “This is actually more like a golf simulator. We invented this technology where the ball pops out of the ground right in front of home plate. It is like a little soft toss up into the air. You hit the ball off a 20-foot wide curved screen and there is a simulation of all of the Major League Baseball stadiums. You can play at Progressive Field or Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park or any stadium. There are a bunch of different games that you can play.”Home Run Dugout has batting bays at Globe Life Field in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers, and in Katy, Texas; Wichita, Kansas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Bossier City, Louisiana; Round Rock, Texas and Cooperstown, New York.Akron Beacon Journal sports writer Michael Beaven can be reached by email at mbeaven@thebeaconjournal.This article originally appeared on Akron Beacon Journal: Copley graduate Jason Borchik leads USA men’s beach handball team

Washington legend calls out Brandon Aiyuk
Brian Mitchell called out Brandon Aiyuk on Tuesday. The former Washington Redskins running back and return specialist has had enough of the San Francisco 49ers receiver's act. Aiyuk has been talking to the 49ers on social media, and most recently, he posted, basically, rooting for the Commanders.Aiyik has continued his passive-aggressive act, repeatedly talking trash to the 49ers on his Instagram account. He has continued to be passive-aggressive when he could have simply shown up in person and talked with the 49ers man-to-man.On Tuesday, while Mitchell and co-host JP Finlay, on "BMitch & Finlay" of 106.7 The Fan, were discussing the Aiyuk situation. Finlay was attempting to show that both the 49ers coaching staff (Kyle Shanahan in particular) and Aiyuk were at fault for the severed relationship. Mitchell interjected, "What he (Aiyuk) is doing is annoying to me. Rooting for the team (Commanders) while they are not doing anything? The thing of it is, go show up, deal with whatever you got to deal with, the speeding stuff, and get the hell out of there."Mitchell was calling out Aiyuk to get into the 49ers facility and talk with John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan. Mitchell continued, "If you don't show up, they (49ers) can string this thing along, man. That's all I'm saying. Listen, he says he can still run. You say you are still physically there? I wanna start seeing that."Mitchell put forth the challenge to Aiyuk, "If you're going to be here, I wanna see you practicing with this team, getting ready to play. I don't want to see little videos, little clips, sayings. I don't care about all of that. I care about you putting the work in to become a player and an asset to this squad. That's what I care about."Mitchell is correct. Aiyuk is annoying; he is passive-aggressive. He needs to show up, be mature, and be ready to report to the 49ers. Be a professional, face the 49ers.This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: Brian Mitchell calls out Brandon Aiyuk

Titans' Gunnar Helm taking part in Tight End University
On Tuesday, word came out that Tennessee Titans second-year tight end Gunnar Helm was attending Tight End University in Nashville for the next three days. This is an excellent opportunity for Helm to gain some added experience during the offseason.Last season, as a rookie, Helm attended Tight End University and said he gained a lot from the experience, including route-running tips from Travis Kelce and blocking techniques from George Kittle that helped him. #Titans TE Gunnar Helm is at TEU, thanks for asking. Second year for Helm, who says he borrows a lot of technique from this event in season, especially from Kelce's route craft and how Kittle teaches the run game. https://t.co/J2yIvV3mpopic.twitter.com/QAD9BD7Q39— Nick Suss (@nicksuss) June 23, 2026Helm did flash as a rookie and proved to be a reliable target for Cam Ward throughout the season, and now the Titans are counting on Helm to take a significant step forward in his second season and are trusting him to assume the TE1 role heading into the 2026 season after not re-signing Chig Okonkwo during the offseason.Tennessee did add to the tight end room during the offseason with the additions of Daniel Bellinger and Kylan Granson as free agents and then drafting Jaren Kalek during the offseason, but it’s Helm’s development that will be one of the keys for the new-look Titans’ offense in 2026.This article originally appeared on Titans Wire: Tennessee Titans' Gunnar Helm taking part in Tight End University

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's opening partner vs Ireland: Decoding Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson record in T20Is in all batting positions
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's opening partner vs Ireland: Decoding Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson record in T20Is in all batting positions originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.KEY TAKEAWAYS:Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to open for India on debut, with Abhishek Sharma or Sanju Samson his likely partner.Abhishek averages 34.49 at a strike rate of 192.38 as an opener, with two centuries and 10 fifties.Samson averages 35.62 opening at a strike rate of 181.93, but is far less effective in the middle orderDecoding Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson record in T20Is in all batting positionsVaibhav Sooryavanshi's anticipated India debut against Ireland brings an intriguing selection question to the fore. With the 15-year-old likely to open the batting, India must decide who partners him at the top, and the choice appears to fall between world No. 1 Abhishek Sharma and reigning T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament Sanju Samson. Both are established openers, yet the arrival of Sooryavanshi creates a logjam at the top of the order. India's likely XI cannot accommodate all three as openers, meaning one of Abhishek or Samson may be asked to shift positions or make way entirely for the teenage prodigy.A closer look at the T20I numbers of both Abhishek and Samson across various batting positions offers a useful guide to how India might resolve the dilemma and which combination gives the team the best balance at the top of the innings.MORE: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stands on the brink of more history with India debutAbhishek Sharma's record by batting position in T20IsAbhishek has been a near-exclusive opener for India, and the numbers reflect a player built for the role. He has scored 1,414 of his 1,438 T20I runs while opening, at an explosive strike rate that few in world cricket can match.PositionInnsRunsHSAvgS/R100s50sOpening431,41413534.49192.38210No. 32241412.00120.0000Overall451,43813533.44190.46210The contrast is stark. Abhishek's tiny sample at No. 3 yielded just 24 runs at a strike rate of 120, underlining that he is an opener and little else. Moving him down the order would blunt his greatest weapon, the ability to tear apart attacks in the powerplay.MORE: Belfast's iconic Titanic Quarter: Where Sooryavanshi & India will stay during Ireland tourSanju Samson's record by batting position in T20IsSamson has been used more flexibly throughout his T20I career, batting everywhere from opener to No. 7. His best returns, however, have come at the top, where his three centuries and a far superior strike rate set him apart from his middle-order numbers.PositionInnsRunsHSAvgS/R100s50sOpening2892611135.62181.9334No. 35915618.20121.3301No. 4112135821.30129.8801No. 581383923.00127.7800Overall541,39911128.55156.8436Like Abhishek, Samson is a different player away from the top. His strike rate plummets from 181.93 as an opener to the 120s and 130s in the middle order, and all three of his T20I hundreds have come while opening the innings.MORE: What is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's jersey number for India?Verdict: Who should open with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs Ireland? The data points to a clear conclusion. Both Abhishek and Samson are devastating openers and significantly diminished middle-order batters, so whoever is asked to drop down sacrifices much of their value. The decision, therefore, hinges on who adapts least poorly and what balance India seeks.Abhishek should retain his opening slot alongside Sooryavanshi. As the world's No. 1 ranked T20I batter with the higher strike rate of 192.38, he offers a left-handed powerplay threat that complements rather than duplicates the teenager's fearless approach, even if both being left-handed is a minor concern against spin. That leaves Samson, whose flexibility and wicketkeeping make him the logical man to shift to No. 3. While his record there is modest, his experience and his standing as the T20 World Cup 2026 Player of the Tournament mean he retains immense value, and his glovework keeps the XI balanced. The most sensible path is Abhishek and Sooryavanshi at the top, with Samson dropping one place to accommodate India's brightest young star. For all the latest cricket news, opinion, and commentary and to share your voice, head to our Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) pages.

Harry Maguire gives verdict on England’s draw with Ghana as Gary Neville names player likely to be dropped
England are not expected to be "too downbeat" following their goalless draw against Ghana, according to defender Harry Maguire. The stalemate in Boston on Tuesday marked the second group game of a major tournament ending in a draw for England for the fourth consecutive time. The draw followed an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening fixture. Maguire, who was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, drew parallels to that campaign, where England beat Iran before being held by the United States, although they ultimately progressed after a win against Wales.Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Maguire stated: "I think they’ll look back at it and think, in the grand scheme of things, we drew our second game against the USA in the last World Cup. “We were disappointed, but we knew we were in control of the group, you go and play your third game, you win the game and everything’s forgotten about and you go on to the knockout.Maguire does not expect England to be ‘too downbeat’ (PA)"So I don’t think they’ll be too downbeat. I think a few lads will be disappointed, probably, with the individual performances. But as a group and a collective I’m sure tomorrow will be a new day and they’ll just look forward to Panama and getting the win."However, former England defender Gary Neville has singled out Anthony Gordon as the player facing the most scrutiny. The 25-year-old winger, who moved to Barcelona from Newcastle before the tournament, has started both matches but has struggled to make a significant impact.Neville told the Stick to Football podcast: "Anthony Gordon, he’s probably the one that’s under the most pressure now. “We all thought he probably wouldn’t play (against Ghana), we thought maybe Marcus (Rashford) would come in or something like that, but he stayed on. I think he’s the one who’s going to find it a little bit difficult to keep his spot."England’s focus now shifts to their final Group L fixture against Panama on Saturday, where they will aim to secure their place in the knockout stages.

Driver Loses Steering Wheel Mid-Burnout, Somehow Still Wins at NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals
Image Credit: Drag Illustrated / YouTube. There are winning runs, and then there are winning runs. Jason Collins delivered the latter at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, turning what should have been a round-two exit into one of the more memorable victories the Pro Mod category has seen in recent memory. The short version: the steering wheel came off during the burnout, the car kissed a sponsor board, the crew had to come help put the wheel back on, and Collins still won the round. Racing, everybody. For a moment, it genuinely looked like the day was done. Collins' screw-blown Scott Tidwell Racing '69 Camaro drifted left during the burnout, nudged a center sponsor board, and came to rest with a cracked nose piece and a driver who no longer had a steering wheel in his hands. Not ideal at any point in a race weekend. Especially not on the starting line in front of a live crowd. The saving grace, procedurally speaking, was that Collins had not crossed the centerline. Race control confirmed the car was legal to make the run, and after a crew member helped get the wheel back on, Collins backed up and staged. At this point, most observers probably assumed they were watching a formality before a loss. Then Travis Harvey went red.A Burnout Nobody Saw ComingWith Harvey out on a foul start, Collins crossed the finish line and collected the round win in what the broadcast booth accurately described as the most improbable victory of the session. Harvey's crew was not pleased. The JBS team, by all accounts, was considerably less than thrilled. Collins' crew chief, Cam, was reportedly shaking his head in the manner of a man who had just finished repairing that same front end from a previous incident.Collins Takes Full ResponsibilityTo his credit, Collins did not attempt to spin the situation. In his post-run interview, he was direct about what happened: the steering wheel came off because he had not locked it on properly. He said he had never had that happen in all his years of racing, and he was embarrassed. He also made a point of apologizing to Cam on camera. Owning an error cleanly, especially right after winning a round because of it, is not nothing. On to the FinalCollins did not stop there. He went on to win the event outright, which means the steering wheel incident now sits at the front of an otherwise legitimate championship run at Thunder Valley.Whether Cam has fully forgiven him is not confirmed at time of publication. If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don’t miss what’s coming next.

Algeria vs Austria Prediction: World Cup 2026 Preview & Best BetsAlgeria and Austria meet in Kansas City knowing that only a win guarantees a place in the last 32, with both sides level on three points and everything still to play for in Group J…Date: Saturday, 27 June 2026Kick-off: 21:00 local (02:00 BST, 28 June)Venue: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, USAStage: Group J, Matchday 3TV/Streaming (UK): BBC / iPlayer POPULARBest World Cup 2026 Welcome Bonus 10 EXCEPTIONAL ParimatchParimatchSports Welcome Offer Bet and Get for a £20 Free Bet BET NOWWhat’s at StakeBoth Algeria and Austria head into this final group fixture level on three points, separated only by goal difference, with Algeria sitting third and Austria second. Argentina have already clinched top spot with six points, meaning this fixture is effectively a straight knockout, where victory sends the winner through and defeat almost certainly ends the loser’s tournament. A draw could be enough depending on Jordan’s result, but neither side can rely on that arithmetic and both will be playing to win. This is as close to a must-win as group football gets.VerdictAustria shade this on the balance of tournament evidence so far, with their 3-1 win over Jordan offering more confidence in the final third than Algeria have shown across their two outings. At 15/8, Austria represent a reasonable price for a side who know a single goal could be enough to send them through, and the European pedigree in their midfield gives them the edge in a tight, high-stakes contest.Algeria vs Austria Match PreviewFew Group J fixtures were anticipated quite like this one. Algeria return to the World Cup after a 12-year absence, and coach V. Petković has built a side capable of competing against quality opposition. The 2-1 win over Jordan steadied the ship after a 3-0 defeat to Argentina, and Algeria need only a victory here to secure progression. The presence of Riyad Mahrez, with 114 international caps and 38 goals, gives them a match-winner in a side that is far more than just a nostalgic return to the big stage.Austria, meanwhile, are back at the World Cup for the first time in nearly three decades, and coach S. Helm has brought genuine Bundesliga and Champions League quality to this squad. Their 3-1 win over Jordan was encouraging, though the subsequent 2-0 defeat to Argentina revealed the limits of what they can absorb defensively against elite pressure. Marcel Sabitzer, Konrad Laimer, and Xaver Schlager give Austria real midfield engine room, and Marko Arnautovic, 37 years old and Austria’s all-time top scorer with 47 international goals in 133 caps, remains a dangerous focal point.Where this game is won or lost is likely in the transition. Algeria showed against Argentina that they cannot absorb high-intensity pressing without conceding, and Austria’s pressing structure under Helm will look to test that again. But Algeria are not without threat going forward, and Mohamed Amoura’s pace could be decisive if Austria push too high. Expect a compact, tense affair where a single set-piece or moment of individual quality settles it.Team FormAlgeria– Jordan (A): Won 2-1, FIFA World Cup – Argentina (A): Lost 0-3, FIFA World Cup – Bolivia (N): Won 4-0, Friendly – Netherlands (A): Won 1-0, Friendly – Uruguay (N): Drew 0-0, FriendlyAlgeria’s form across these five matches tells a story of genuine quality against mid-level opposition and vulnerability when the intensity rises. The 4-0 friendly win over Bolivia and the 1-0 victory in the Netherlands were confidence-builders, but the 3-0 World Cup defeat to Argentina exposed defensive frailties at the highest level. The 2-1 win over Jordan was precisely what Petković needed before this decider, giving his side three points and renewed belief heading into Kansas City.Austria– Argentina (A): Lost 0-2, FIFA World Cup – Jordan (H): Won 3-1, FIFA World Cup – Tunisia (H): Won 1-0, Friendly – South Korea (H): Won 1-0, Friendly – Ghana (H): Won 5-1, FriendlyAustria’s pre-tournament form was quietly impressive, with wins over South Korea and Ghana bookending a tidy 1-0 defeat of Tunisia. The opening 3-1 win over Jordan in the World Cup proper underlined their ability to convert pressure into goals, but the 2-0 loss to Argentina highlighted that they can be bypassed when the quality is high enough. The key question for Helm is whether his side can replicate their Jordan performance against a more tactically organised Algerian unit.Algeria vs Austria Head to HeadThese sides have only met once in a major tournament. Back at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Austria claimed a 2-0 victory over Algeria in what was one of the few occasions these two nations have shared a competitive pitch. That single meeting offers limited predictive value across 44 years, but it is a notable curiosity that their only prior encounter also came at a World Cup group stage.Given the lack of historical data, the Algeria vs Austria head to head record does little to tip the scales either way. Both squads are substantially different from anything seen at previous tournaments, and the tactical and personnel changes across four decades make that 1982 result little more than a footnote. Form, context, and current squad depth are far more relevant to any Algeria vs Austria prediction today.Team NewsAlgeriaAlgeria head into this match with no confirmed injury concerns coming out of official squad communications, though Petković may consider rotation after back-to-back competitive fixtures in the space of five days. Riyad Mahrez, the captain with 114 caps and 38 international goals, will almost certainly start given the scale of the occasion. Amine Gouiri, who scored in the win over Jordan, will be pushing for a continuing role alongside Mohamed Amoura in attack. The midfield axis of Hicham Boudaoui, Ramiz Zerrouki, and Farès Chaïbi has provided reasonable energy across both group games. Ibrahim Maza, the 20-year-old Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, adds dynamism and could be particularly important in pressing Austria’s deeper-lying playmakers. There are no confirmed suspensions for Algeria going into this fixture.AustriaAustria also report no fresh injury concerns ahead of the decider. Marko Arnautovic, who has scored once in this World Cup, is expected to lead the line once more despite his 37 years, given the lack of a comparable alternative finisher. Romano Schmid, also on the scoresheet in this tournament, brings energy from midfield and will look to continue his effective work in the Austrian shape.Konrad Laimer and Xaver Schlager are expected to retain their places at the heart of the midfield, with David Alaba continuing his role as an organising presence in defence. Kevin Danso of Tottenham Hotspur and Philipp Lienhart are likely to start alongside Alaba at the back. Nicolas Seiwald provides the defensive midfield balance that allows Sabitzer to influence proceedings further forward. No suspensions have been confirmed ahead of kick-off.Predicted LineupsAlgeria Predicted XIAlgeria (4-3-3): Luca Zidane; Rayan Ait-Nouri, Aissa Mandi (c), Mohamed Amine Tougai, Ramy Bensebaini; Ramiz Zerrouki, Ibrahim Maza, Fares Chaibi; Riyad Mahrez, Mohamed Amoura, Amine GouiriPredicted XI – squad to be confirmed.Austria Predicted XIAustria (4-2-3-1): Alexander Schlager; Stefan Posch, Kevin Danso, David Alaba (c), Phillipp Mwene; Nicolas Seiwald, Xaver Schlager; Patrick Wimmer, Marcel Sabitzer, Romano Schmid; Marko ArnautovicPredicted XI – squad to be confirmed.Key Tactical MatchupThe central battle here is likely between Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez and Austria’s defensive midfield screen of Nicolas Seiwald and Xaver Schlager. Mahrez, operating in the half-spaces from the right, is at his most dangerous when given a yard of space to drive into or a weak side to cut onto. Seiwald and Xaver Schlager’s combined roles are to deny exactly that kind of freedom, and if Austria can keep Mahrez facing his own goal for long spells, much of Algeria’s creativity dries up. Algeria have scored two goals in this World Cup, both coming when the attacking third was given more open space against Jordan. Austria will look to compact that zone and force Algeria wide, where their full-backs can be more conservative.Best Bets POPULARBest World Cup 2026 Welcome Bonus 10 EXCEPTIONAL BetfredBetfredBet and Get New Bettor Bonus of £50 in Free Bets BET NOW 9.9 EXCEPTIONAL HighbetHighbetBet £10 and Get a £20 Free bet BET NOW 9.8 EXCEPTIONAL ParimatchParimatchSports Welcome Offer Bet and Get for a £20 Free Bet BET NOWMain Pick: Austria to Win @ 15/8Austria’s superior quality in central midfield, the threat of Arnautovic as a physical focal point, and the experience in Alaba’s defensive organisation give them the edge here. Their 3-1 win over Jordan showed a clinical side when the opportunity arrives, and at 15/8, the Algeria vs Austria odds represent a fair return for the likelier winner in this straight shootout. Algeria’s goal difference of -2 compared to Austria’s neutral record also hints at a defensive frailty that could be exploited.Goals Market: Under 2 Goals @ 10/11Both sides are playing for progression in a match where a single goal could decide everything. High-pressure World Cup knockouts of this nature often produce tight, conservative football, particularly when both managers are tactically disciplined. Algeria’s two goals in the tournament so far and Austria’s two confirm neither side has been free-scoring against comparable opposition. Under 2 goals at 10/11 looks a fair market price for what should be a cagey affair.Scorer Market: Marko Arnautovic Anytime ScorerArnautovic already has a goal to his name at this World Cup, his experience and aerial presence making him a constant aerial threat from crosses and set-pieces. With 47 international goals in 133 caps, he is a proven finisher at this level, and in a do-or-die game Austria will look to him early. He is worth monitoring in the Algeria vs Austria bet builder options and as a standalone scorer pick wherever the price is available.Optional: Algeria vs Austria Accumulator Leg – Austria Win and Under 3 GoalsIf you are building an Algeria vs Austria acca, pairing Austria to win with under 3 total goals makes sense as a combined pick. The logic is consistent: Austria have the edge, but this is not a game where either side runs riot. A tight 1-0 or 2-1 Austrian victory fits the pattern of both sides’ performances across the group stage.Odds Across OperatorsHere is a look at the best available prices for this fixture ahead of kick-off in Kansas City.Odds correct at the time of writing. Juventus set sights on five Real Madrid stars as transfer links intensify
Juventus set sights on five Real Madrid stars as transfer links intensifyAfter already having signed four new players for the next season, Real Madrid are still not done with their business in the transfer market, and are looking for yet another center-back and another midfielder.Meanwhile, the Merengues are also looking for the departures of some of their players, especially the ones who are not expected to be in the plans of the new coach, Jose Mourinho, for the next season. The white club is still looking for possible destinations for these players, but according to a report from Diario AS, the Italian side Juventus could prove to be quite helpful for them in this regard, as they have set their eyes on up to five Real Madrid players. The Old Lady is looking to bolster its midfield in particular, and for this purpose, one of the players they have in their sights is the Merengue midfielder Dani Ceballos, even though he is not their top priority. However, it is for the attack that they want most of their reinforcements from the Spanish club. In this regard, they are keeping an eye on the 18-year-old Argentinian forward Franco Mastantuono, whom Real Madrid are looking to send on a loan after his difficult first year in Spain. For the defense, the Italians have the fullback Fran Garcia in their shortlist, who is also not a top priority for their new coach, Luciano Spaletti, but still is an attractive target for them, mainly because of his experience combined with his youth at 26 years of age.Meanwhile, another two attackers that Juventus are desiring from the Merengue team are Gonzalo Garcia and Brahim Diaz. However, neither of them is likely to leave Real Madrid this summer, as they are looking to convince Mourinho to give them important roles in their team for the next season.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Chelsea’s eye-watering valuation of Malo Gusto amid Man City interest
Fabrizio Romano reveals Chelsea’s eye-watering valuation of Malo Gusto amid Man City interestChelsea have set a premium benchmark to push away potential interest targeting French defensive star Malo Gusto this summer.Incoming Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly seeking a reunion with the full-back to resolve a depth issue at the Etihad Stadium.Despite admiration in East Manchester, official movement from City towards Chelsea has remained absent.Chelsea will demand a staggering price for Malo Gusto this summer, with their intention being not to sell the Frenchman despite Manchester City interest. While the club works behind the scenes to push through a record-breaking package for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Enzo Maresca is simultaneously eager to secure a new name to compliment Matheus Nunes at right-back.This has led Manchester City’s recruitment department to look towards West London, where Malo Gusto previously excelled under Maresca’s guidance before the manager’s winter departure from Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old French defender has seen his stock rise significantly since arriving at Chelsea and is currently representing France at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in North America. However, any plans City have of engineering a smooth reunion between the defender and their incoming manager have hit a fierce roadblock, with Chelsea’s leadership placing a remarkable asking price on the player.Chelsea’s staggering Malo Gusto asking price revealedNow, according to transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea value Malo Gusto at a £75 million fee and are not actively working to sell the French right-back despite securing the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra. From the side of Manchester City, who themselves are in the market for a new right-back this summer, it is claimed that while there is interest in Gusto, no bids have been lodged nor has there been any club to club talks so far.Additional reporting from BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella has also revealed that Gusto is exploring his options to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. What next for Man City in their right-back search? For Manchester City’s Sporting Director Hugo Viana, navigating this firm stance will test the club’s financial patience during a busy summer window, and may force them to look at alternative targets on their shortlist – including Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento.Chelsea are also actively managing strong interest from Real Madrid for midfielder Enzo Fernández, whom City have already denied interest in, while the Etihad’s officials are poised to deal with Tottenham Hotspur for Brazilian winger Savinho. With official negotiations for Malo Gusto absent at present, the French international is expected to remain fully focused on his country’s World Cup knockout ambitions before returning across the Atlantic to address his club future next month.

Liverpool decide against £50m attacking move
Liverpool decide against £50m attacking moveWorld Cup spotlight increases transfer interestFew players have enhanced their reputation more dramatically this summer than Folarin Balogun. While representing the United States on home soil at the World Cup, the striker has delivered the kind of performances that inevitably attract attention from across Europe.Balogun’s two-goal display in a 4-1 victory over Paraguay made history, becoming the first American male player since 1930 to score twice in a World Cup match. He followed that with another impressive showing against Australia, collecting a second consecutive Player of the Match award and helping guide his nation into the knockout rounds.According to reporting from The Athletic, Balogun is expected to move this summer, with several clubs already exploring potential deals. Despite ongoing links to English clubs, Liverpool are not expected to pursue the Monaco forward, having prioritised alternative targets and different profiles within their recruitment plans. That decision may surprise some supporters given Balogun’s age, experience and homegrown status, but Liverpool’s transfer strategy appears focused elsewhere.Photo IMAGOMonaco stance creates expensive propositionThe financial aspects of any deal also play a significant role.Balogun joined AS Monaco from Arsenal in 2023 after emerging from the London club’s academy system. Following loan spells with Middlesbrough and Stade de Reims, he sought regular first-team football and found it in Ligue 1.Monaco are believed to value the striker at around €50 million (£43.2m), a figure that would generate a substantial profit on their original investment. With Balogun’s contract running until June 2028, the French club are under no immediate pressure to sell. The report suggests there have been no significant discussions over a contract extension and that the player is believed to favour a transfer. As a result, this summer is viewed as a logical point for Monaco to cash in while the striker’s value continues to rise. For Liverpool, however, committing such a fee to a player who may not be viewed as an ideal tactical fit appears difficult to justify.Development in France highlights attacking strengthsBalogun’s progression since leaving Arsenal has been impressive.Initially regarded as a striker who preferred receiving possession to feet, he has developed into a far more dynamic forward. His pace remains his standout attribute, but his movement has become increasingly sophisticated. He regularly attacks space behind defensive lines, times his runs intelligently and uses subtle changes of direction to evade offside traps.Inside the penalty area, there has been notable improvement too. His willingness to attack six-yard-box opportunities has increased, making him a more consistent goal threat.Creatively, he offers qualities that many centre-forwards lack. While his passing success rate in advanced areas remains relatively modest, he attempts ambitious passes and regularly creates chances for team-mates. According to the original report, his eight big chances created during the 2025-26 campaign ranked among the strongest figures for centre-forwards across Europe’s major leagues. Those attributes explain why interest from the Premier League and elsewhere continues to grow.Liverpool focus points elsewhereLiverpool’s decision not to actively pursue Balogun should not be interpreted as a criticism of the player. At 24, he is entering what should be the most productive years of his career. His record of 31 goals in 91 appearances for Monaco demonstrates consistency, while his tally of 11 goals in 29 matches for the United States highlights his growing importance on the international stage.Nevertheless, recruitment is rarely about identifying talented players alone. It is about finding the right player at the right price and for the right role.Balogun appears destined for a significant transfer in the coming weeks, but Liverpool’s current plans suggest they will not be part of the bidding. While other Premier League clubs continue to monitor developments closely, the Reds seem content to concentrate their resources on alternative priorities. For Balogun, a return to English football remains a realistic possibility. For Liverpool, it is a transfer opportunity they have decided to leave behind.

Knockout blow for Man United as Leeds United hijack Harry Wilson deal
Knockout blow for Man United as Leeds United hijack Harry Wilson deal Manchester United’s old foes, Leeds United, have agreed to sign midfielder Harry Wilson from Leeds United, the reliable David Ornstein has confirmed. Wilson interestUnited are prioritising midfield reinforcements this summer as they prepare to play in the Champions League and potentially mount a title challenge next season.A deal with Atalanta has been wrapped up for Ederson, who is set to officially complete the move after the 2026 World Cup in North America. But United aren’t stopping there, with at least one more midfield expected. Three could arrive, but this seems to be largely dependent on Manuel Ugarte’s exit.Discussions are ongoing to try and strike an agreement for Mateus Fernandes, but West Ham’s £85m valuation is proving to be difficult.Other options on the table include Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) and Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion). More recently, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United also retain an interest in Wilson.Wilson is expected to depart Fulham at the end of this month, when his contract expires. He will become a free agent off the back of an excellent 2025/26 campaign in which he netted 10 goals and contributed an additional seven assists in 36 Premier League appearances. In addition to playing as an attacking midfielder, the 29-year-old can also operate on the wing. Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest in Wilson.Ornstein has now given an update, revealing that an agreement has been struck for Wilson to join Leeds, dealing a fatal blow to whatever hopes United may have harboured of signing him. Wilson updateOrnstein reveals, “Leeds United reach agreement to sign Harry Wilson as free agent.”“29yo winger targeted by many clubs amid expiring Fulham contract but Leeds win race.”“Wales international to do medical in due course & join on long-term deal with higher salary.”With United and Leeds already locked in a tussle for Shea Charles, the Wilson hijack has now added another layer to their growing rivalry.Featured image Ryan Pierse via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. Video: Ronaldinho completes Serie C move and signs iconic no.10 jersey – ‘He will play’In one of the most surprising moves of the summer transfer window, former Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldinho is set to return to Italy to play for Serie C outfit Ravenna and the Brazilian icon has shared footage of himself signing and posing with his new no.10 shirt. The 46-year-old had seemingly called it a day on his playing career over a decade ago, his last contract with Fluminses being terminated all the way back in 2015.However, the former PSG, Milan and Barcelona star is set to put his boots back on and return to Italy to play for Ravenna in the third tier: ‘I can’t wait to dance with the ball again,” said Ronaldinho when Ravenna confirmed the deal on Tuesday.PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – JUNE 19: Ronaldinho attends the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match between Brazil and Haiti at Philadelphia Stadium on June 19, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Darrian Traynor/Getty Images)While a deal for Ronaldinho brings obvious benefits in terms of exposure and commercial revenue, club owner Ignazio Cipriani insists that this move is not purely for promotional reasons and that the Brazilian icon will definitely play for at least one match in Serie C.Ronaldinho will not join the team for their pre-season training camp, though.“He will be there for the presentation of the team on August 21,” Cipriani confirmed in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport“He won’t come on the training camp, but he will definitely take part in at least one league match, maybe even a few more, we’ll see. We still don’t know when he will take to the pitch in the league, it will depend on several things. It will definitely be a home game.“His goal is to score his final goal in a Ravenna shirt,” Cipriani insists.Ronaldinho wearing Ravenna kit (ravennafc.it)Meanwhile, footage of Ronaldinho signing his new Ravenna shirt with his iconic no.10 on the back of it has gone viral across social media.Ravenna will be the first club in the world to wear a kit with Ronaldinho’s R10 branding, which Cipriani has compared to the ‘Michael Jordan style’ arrangement with Nike.Watch: Ronaldinho completes Ravenna move and signs no.10 shirtView this post on InstagramView this post on Instagram

Couch: 5 quick takes on Jasiah Jervis, Carlos Medlock, Jeremy Fears and MSU's basketball team at the Moneyball Pro-Am
HOLT — There have been plenty of other years when Lansing’s Moneyball Pro-Am summer basketball league has been highly anticipated. Few opening nights, however, have lived up to the hype and satisfied curiosity as well as Tuesday at Holt High School. This year’s pro-am has a lot going for it in terms of the Michigan State’s men’s basketball dynamic. The Spartans are again the featured act, spread out over the six pro-am teams. There is loads of intrigue surrounding MSU’s incoming freshman and transfer class, high hopes for a couple returning sophomores, appreciation for the return of All-American point guard Jeremy Fears Jr., and one more summer of Coen Carr’s dunks, which, for four years now, have been more than worth the price of the free admission. RELATED: See the rosters and schedule for the 2026 Moneyball Pro-Am summer basketball leagueHere are five quick takes on MSU’s basketball team after the opening night of the 2026 Moneyball Pro-Am:1. Worth watching: MSU’s freshman guard duo of Jervis and MedlockJasiah Jervis and Carlos Medlock Jr. were paired against each in the opening game Tuesday night, often guarding each other. Those were some of the most entertaining and competitive moments in a game that went down to the wire. Medlock is coming into MSU slotted as Fears’ backup. The question with him is how much he can bring to the role and how much he’ll play alongside Fears, not just behind him. Medlock's step-back shot off the dribble is really good, both in the paint and out beyond the arc. I’m not sure how many step-back 3s MSU’s coaches will want him taking, but it’s clear that he’s drilled that move as a way to create extra separation to make up for his size. I should say his height, rather. Because he looks strong enough to hold up in the college game. On one possession Tuesday, as Jervis guarded Medlock, the in-game DJ yelled over the mic, “Don’t let him score.” Jervis hounded Medlock, who eventually was forced nto a difficult fadeaway shot off the bounce from just outside the elbow. It was a credit to Jervis’ defense. Medlock also made the shot.Medlock said afterwards that he’s glad Fears is coming back, that he came to MSU planning to be able learn from him for a year, “How to be a leader and captain of the team,” he said. “I know I’m going to have to fill that role when he leaves.”With Jervis, the first thing that stands out his his first step. That's a gift. He’s got good size and quickness. He’ll be able to get to the rim in the half court. I also think he’s the most likely candidate to be MSU’s No. 3 point guard, should that role be needed. Jervis and Medlock really like to get after it, which helped set the tone for a rather intense opening game and two great games on the first night.2. Fears’ dunks were a big part of the showOn the night of the NBA draft, Jeremy Fears Jr. showed one reason there was some buzz about him last month during pre-draft workouts and at the NBA combine — his bounce continues to return. There was no louder collective “Ooh” from the crowd Tuesday than after Fears' two-handed dunk, which followed a one-hander, both of which he seemed to do with ease, like he used to back in high school and early at MSU before he was shot in the leg over Christmas break during his freshman season.Fears’ recovering a good bit of his quickness and athleticism was part of the reason he became a star for MSU last season. But this was another level of bounce. He said afterward that he can feel it. And that not having it for a long time, forced him to become a better overall player, because he had to find other ways to be effective. It’ll be interesting to see this coming season whether he’s got yet another level to his game, and whether increased athleticism helps him unlock it.3. Ward and Scott look physically differentNot surprisingly, Cam Ward and Jordan Scott look different than a year ago — and even three months ago — as in they have biceps. This happens a lot with sophomores who endure getting pushed around at times during their freshman seasons. April and May become all about remaking their bodies. We’ll see how much it helps them take the next step. Ward was everywhere Tuesday, often the first guy down the floor. Both of these guys are proven to a degree. What’s not clear is how big a leap they have in them from Year 1 to Year 2.4. What to make of big men Bonke, Taylor and McCullochMSU has legit size at the center position in transfer Anton Bonke and freshman Ethan Taylor, both of them over 7-feet. Bonke is really big. He swallows the ball on rebounds and looks quick enough to be rim-runner and rim-roller. His most impressive play offensively Tuesday was a driving two-handed reverse dunk, where he went up on one side of the rim and dunked it back over his head on the other. There are still questions with him that can’t be answered in a summer pro-am. But no red flags based on what MSU is expecting from him.Taylor at times treated the pro-am Tuesday a bit more casually than MSU’s other three freshmen did. I’m curious to see how ready he’ll be to contribute this season. He does have some undeniable abilities, one of which is his passing and how he sees the floor. He’ll have to develop in other areas for that to become a weapon, but at some point, it will be — on the drive, in the post and, maybe most importantly, as an outlet passer. MSU’s best fast-break teams have had big guys who got the thing going with that first pass. Taylor has a knack there.McCulloch showed his outside touch Tuesday. That's going to help him and MSU. But his most memorable shot of the night came when he faced up Taylor from one side and drove into the lane, scoring over Taylor on a sweeping hook shot. It’s the closest McCulloch has ever looked to Magic Johnson in the 1985 NBA finals.. McCulloch seemed really comfortable doing it, like it’s a shot he’s been working on. It’s just not something you see very often. But as someone whose face-up shot will keep defenders attached to him, it could be an effective move. MSU could use him to be a threat in other ways beyond his outside shot.5. Don’t sleep on Julius AventJulius Avent is the least-heralded of MSU’s four incoming freshmen. Nobody stood out more and faster Tuesday. Avent made a heckuva first impression, playing in the late game, in front of a once-full crowd that had thinned out considerably. He scored nine of his team’s first 16 points, getting buckets inside and out, bullying his way to points at the rim. He had a decent array of moves and played with intent. The Big Ten is a different beast and he’ll be competing for minutes in a crowded depth chart. But Avent looked Tuesday like someone who’s determined to leave his mark.Contact Graham Couch at gcouch@lsj.com. Eberechi Eze urges England teammates to ‘block out the noise’ after disappointing Ghana draw
England midfielder Eberechi Eze insists the goalless draw against Ghana has not altered Group L’s dynamic, despite Thomas Tuchel’s side failing to break down a resolute defence in Boston. The stalemate marked the fourth consecutive tournament that England have drawn their second game. The point all but secured last 32 qualification, with top spot against Panama on Saturday dependent on bettering Ghana’s result against Croatia.Asked if the Boston outcome had changed anything, Eze stated: "No, we set out to win anyway, so it changes nothing for us, the mentality is still the same, so we’re focusing on doing what we need to win. I think that’s the main thing. “It’s a long journey, you can’t be too high, you can’t be too low, you’ve got to be trusting what you’re doing in the present moment. So, we’re trying to do that, we’re trying to enjoy it as much as we can, and being confident of what’s to come."Eze denied England are over-reliant on Harry Kane, who struggled in Tuesday's game (Getty)Eze also dismissed suggestions that England are overly reliant on captain Harry Kane for goals. Kane, who bagged a brace in last week’s opener against Croatia, hardly featured against Ghana, notably skying a late chance he would normally convert.Eze explained: "I think it makes it look like that, because he scores so many goals, and he’s that effective. But we’ve got so much talent, so much creativity, and options to score. But, of course, it helps having someone as incredible as him, and we won’t look too much past that."The squad returned to their Kansas City base on Tuesday night, with attention now firmly fixed on Saturday’s crucial Panama match in New Jersey. Eze expressed his anticipation for returning to the team's 'bubble’, aiming to shield themselves from external commentary surrounding the Ghana result. He added: "It’s good being around, full of professionals, and enjoying time together. Blocking out a lot of the noise, and we know there’s a lot going on around us, but we’re very focused on what’s going on inside, and we’re enjoying that little bubble that we’re in. “It’s important to look after that and to hold on to that, because, as I said, there’s a lot of media, a lot of conversations about us and what’s going on, but as long as we can stay tight, that’s all that matters really."With their focus now squarely on the upcoming fixture, England will be keen to secure their position and advance deeper into the tournament.

OneFootball x Gallus: Scotland can get a result against Brazil
OneFootball x Gallus: Scotland can get a result against BrazilAs part of OneFootball's collaboration series with Shoot Music we're interviewing an artist about their love of football and, over the next few weeks, it will be all about the World Cup.This week it's Eamon & Paul Ewins of Glasgow indie-punks Gallus, who, as you might have guessed, are Scotland fans. How exciting has it been to be back at the World Cup so far as a Scotland fan?Eamon: It's a first for all of us so it's been incredible. Watching the Haiti game felt genuinely historic, and getting a win made it all the sweeter. Feeling very proud! Can you describe your feelings heading into the Brazil game?Eamon: Genuine pride. I think we can get a result against them but we've given a good account of ourselves so far. Morocco are a really good team and I think we were unlucky not to get something off them. I just want to see us attack Brazil and play on the front foot. We're looking good for qualification so avoid a total doing and we're fine. But we have a chance for a real upset against them. What was your favourite Scotland World Cup memory prior to this tournament, and did John McGinn's goal vs Haiti come close to matching that?Eamon: Our Scotland world cup memories prior to this are non-existent! We were all babies during France ‘98. The goal against Haiti is right up there with Scotland memories in general though. If Scotland are to go far this year, which one player do you think will be key to that success?Paul: Every squad needs an architect. There are a few who could be the architect behind Scotland’s success. But all architects need builders to do the hard work and graft for them, and the only builder in that squad is our bricky, Anthony Ralston.Who do you think will win the World Cup and why?Paul: I can’t see much further than Spain and Argentina. Would be happy with either of them winning it, but Germany do look pretty good too. I’ll say Spain to win it after putting Scotland out in the semis'Letter From America' by Gallus is out now.You can follow the band on Instagram here: @gallusareaband

‘A bit harsh’: Manjrekar raises questions after Jaiswal’s exclusion despite strong ODI returns
Mumbai : The exclusion of inform opener Yashasvi Jaiswal from India’s ODI squad for the three-match series in England has raised eyebrows, especially after the left-hander smashed an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls against Afghanistan in Chennai. Jaiswal, who has scored two centuries in just six ODIs, came into the side as Virat Kohli’s replacement during the Afghanistan series but made way once the former captain returned. With Rohit Sharma continuing as opener alongside skipper Shubman Gill, Jaiswal faces a prolonged wait for opportunities, prompting concerns about his ODI future ahead of the 2027 World Cup.Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar termed Jaiswal’s omission “harsh” and said the selectors must have a long-term plan involving Rohit if they are continuing with the veteran.“Yashasvi has scored two hundreds in his last three ODIs. He made 116 not out against South Africa, then after a gap scored four and a hundred. Anyone opening in India’s strong ODI side will get opportunities, and Yashasvi has made the most of them. So yes, it is unfortunate and a bit harsh,” Manjrekar said during an online interaction on Tuesday.“If the selectors have picked Rohit, I hope it’s because they genuinely see him as part of the 2027 World Cup plans. Otherwise, that place should have gone to somebody else,” he added.Manjrekar said Indian cricket often struggles to take purely merit-based decisions involving senior stars. “We all know the culture around big-name players. Decisions are rarely as simple as judging on cricketing merit alone. That seems to be the case with Rohit too. If the selectors believe Rohit is part of the long-term plan, they should say so. But if he is being picked because they are not ready to drop him, then it reflects a problem Indian cricket has had for years. Selection should never be about what’s best for Virat, Rohit or Bumrah. It should always be about what’s best for Indian cricket,” Manjrekar asserted. The former India batter also backed 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Referring to the youngster’s recent verbal altercation during India A’s Tri-series in Sri Lanka, Manjrekar said: “He has learnt a lesson. He seems a very aware and mature guy and will handle such situations much better in the future.” 131958604Asked whether he had seen anyone bat like Sooryavanshi, Manjrekar said the teenager’s aggressive approach was unique.(Watch Ireland vs India 2026 1st T20I Live on Sony Sports Ten 1 SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 5 SD & HD and Sony LIV).

The best World Cup opening games
The best World Cup opening gamesA World Cup can take a few days to come to life, but every so often the opening match sets the tone straight away. A famous upset or a goal nobody saw coming can light up the first day, and the curtain-raiser is one of the fixtures people study most closely when the World Cup betting odds are released. For years the opening game was a cautious affair, with holders or hosts wary of an early slip. The matches that broke that pattern are the ones still remembered, whether for a giant-killing or a glut of goals. In this article, we look back at five of the best World Cup opening games, from two of the tournament’s biggest shocks to a six-goal thriller.Cameroon 1-0 Argentina, 1990Cameroon arrived at Italia 90 as rank outsiders and left the San Siro having beaten the holders. Argentina, captained by Diego Maradona, controlled possession but couldn’t break down a stubborn Cameroon defence. Francois Omam-Biyik settled it midway through the second half, heading home after the goalkeeper failed to hold his effort. Cameroon finished with nine men after two sending-offs, yet held on for one of the great World Cup shocks. The result was no fluke either, as they went on to reach the quarter-finals, where they pushed England all the way before losing in extra time.Senegal 1-0 France, 2002France suffered a similar fate 12 years later in the opening match in Seoul. The reigning world and European champions, missing the injured Zinedine Zidane, were beaten by tournament debutants Senegal. Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal before the half-hour mark, bundling the ball in after a low cross from El Hadji Diouf. Senegal went on to reach the quarter-finals, while France were knocked out without winning a match.Germany 4-2 Costa Rica, 2006Germany got the 2006 World Cup underway in Munich with the highest-scoring opening match in the tournament’s history. Philipp Lahm curled in the first goal after just six minutes, and although Paulo Wanchope twice pulled Costa Rica level, the hosts always had a response. Miroslav Klose scored twice on his birthday, and Torsten Frings sealed the 4-2 win with a long-range strike near the end. After years of forgettable curtain-raisers, the host nation served up six goals on opening night.South Africa 1-1 Mexico, 2010The 2010 tournament was the first held on African soil, and South Africa marked the moment in style at Soccer City in Johannesburg. After a tense first half, Siphiwe Tshabalala latched onto a through ball and lashed a left-footed shot into the top corner, sending the home crowd wild. It was the first goal scored on African soil at a World Cup, which only added to the occasion. Rafael Marquez equalised for Mexico with 11 minutes left to deny the hosts a win, but the goal and the atmosphere made it a fitting opener. Memorable openers like this are part of why early-tournament football odds can be so hard to call.Brazil 3-1 Croatia, 2014Brazil opened their home World Cup in Sao Paulo and could hardly have started worse, falling behind to a Marcelo own goal inside the opening quarter of an hour. It was the first own goal a Brazilian had ever scored at a World Cup, and it briefly silenced the host crowd. Neymar dragged the favourites level before the break and then put them ahead from the penalty spot, after a soft decision that Croatia furiously disputed. Oscar added a third in stoppage time to settle a contest that had threatened a major upset.Three of these five openers featured African sides making their mark, a thread that runs through some of the World Cup’s most memorable first days.

Everton set to pass on permanent Tyrique George deal
Everton set to pass on permanent Tyrique George deal(Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)Everton are not expected to activate the £25m purchase option in Tyrique George's loan from Chelsea.George joined Everton on loan in the January transfer window but was given limited minutes to impress across the second half of the campaign. The 20-year-old made only one start in the Premier League and totalled just 210 minutes, despite the Toffees decline in results and performances across the run-in.The Athletic are reporting that Everton are not prepared to meet the purchase option, though have not entirely ruled out re-signing George if new terms can be agreed. Everton are deliberating whether to negotiate a new deal with Chelsea or pursue other targets. It's a similar stance to Jack Grealish. Everton hold an option to sign Grealish permanently for £50m but will not meet that fee.The club remain open to bringing Grealish back to Hill Dickinson Stadium next season if the financial package of a deal makes sense. However, Grealish earns around £300,000-a-week at Manchester City and his wages represent a stumbling block to his return.Everton are in the market for a right-sided forward, and both Grealish and George favour a role from the left. Alongside a right-sided player, Everton could enter the market for further wide options in the event of departures.Dwight McNeil saw a transfer to Crystal Palace breakdown in the January transfer window and is expected to move on this summer. Iliman Ndiaye's future is also up in the air. The Senegal international has been open in his desire to play Champions League football, with reported interest from Premier League rivals.Reader Comments (12)Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Comments are the responsibility of the poster. Disclaimer ()Another potential goalscorer spurned. Such a pity. But he was never going to get a decent run under the idiot that is our manager. Tyrique is far too forward-thinking in his approach to the game and shows an insatiable desire to run toward goal with the ball at his feet, and then actually try and score! No doubt the fact that he failed to do so in the paltry handful of chances our Supreme Leader deemed him worthy of will be used to justify such a decision. Brian Harrison 3 Posted 24/06/2026 at 11:08:31MichaelOn X they are saying that while Everton wont make the transfer permanent they are trying to negotiate another loan deal, and speculation is they are trying to do another loan deal for Grealish. Maybe this is as much to do with how much is in the transfer kitty as whether the club want to sign George and Grealish on permanent deals. I would hope if they do another loan deal for George its with a guarantee to buy at the end of the loan deal. Tony Abrahams 5 Posted 24/06/2026 at 11:17:29The story I was told was that the club want him, but the kid doesn’t want to commit himself because he doesn’t have enough faith in the manager, giving him enough game time. The second part of the story was that Moyes, wants to sign Harry Wilson, instead.Moyes, wants experience, I honestly don’t believe there is anything wrong with that, but I can see it now, he’s signing him to play in the team, whereas my own opinion is that we need to start concentrating a little bit more on the overall squad, rather than the team, otherwise we will never be able to push on whilst also trying to be competitive in the cup competitions. Stu Darlington 6 Posted 24/06/2026 at 11:44:36Agree with you about squad development Tony. Our squad has been too thin and lacking in depth and quality for too long now If we are to be contenders next season we need to have a squad of players capable of doing it,given all that can happen over a season with injuries, overseas cup competitions, friendly internationals etc. All seems to have gone quiet on the Harry Wilson front. Is it still a possibility or is he headed abroad? Kevin Naylor 7 Posted 24/06/2026 at 11:48:33Much rather sign Tomas Soucek said nobody, Dave Lynch 8 Posted 24/06/2026 at 11:48:38Harry Wilson signed for Leeds. Whilst our supposed manager is the other side of the world. Clive Rogers 9 Posted 24/06/2026 at 11:50:08Harry Wilson would be a “not very exciting” signing Dave Lynch 10 Posted 24/06/2026 at 11:54:56Clive, Wilson is a very good footballer, a late developer but so was Vardy. David West 11 Posted 24/06/2026 at 12:05:20I'd rather have Wilson myself. Another loan wouldn't be a bad move, especially if mcneil goes, Grealish still unknown and Ndiaye looking like he's off too.Harry Wilson scored 10 goals and 7 assists.17 goal involvements is rather more exciting than what much of our players produce, including Tyrique George. For all George's potential, if you want to win football matches, then we have to have players that will produce goals regularly.Potential is meaningless if Everton football club are not the beneficiaries on the pitch.

Rutgers has top receiver in the country - K.J. Duff will challenge USC
In the Big Ten, even teams with lesser talent still have more talent than the best teams in some conferences in college football. There will be no layup games for USC this season. The Trojans game vs Rutgers is a game they will need to take care of business in, but the Scarlet Knights will be returning some serious talent on offense this season. In a recent article, Brad Crawford provides insight into a very overlooked talented receiver in K. J. Duff. Here is what he had to say about Duff. "If Duff were playing at a school inside the top 25, he would already be a well-known name at this point. Duff brings a security blanket presence, elevating the Scarlet Knights' passing game and giving Rutgers a legitimate No. 1 target. His ability to high-point the football and finish through contact makes him a constant mismatch on the perimeter. Duff dominated last season despite defenses in the Big Ten knowing Rutgers' offense runs through him on passing downs."Duff is a very underrated player in college football, and he could make the Trojans' secondary pay in Week 4. The Scarlet Knights may not be as complete a team as the Oregon Ducks, but they should be the exact tune-up opponent the Trojans need. Duff will get the Trojans secondary ready for the Ducks' playmakers. This article originally appeared on Trojans Wire: Rutgers football has underrated talent on offense versus USC Trojans

Leeds agree contract with Fulham forward Wilson
Wales international Wilson is currently on 69 caps for his country [Getty Images]Leeds have agreed a long-term contract with Fulham attacker Harry Wilson to become their first signing of the summer on a free transfer. The 29-year-old Wales international is out of contract next week, although the move remains subject to a medical and the formal signing of terms in the coming days.It would represent a major coup for the Yorkshire club if completed. They faced competition from Premier League rivals for his signature.Wilson has been a long-term target for Leeds, who attempted to sign him on deadline day last summer before the move collapsed. His departure would be a significant blow to Fulham, who offered their player of the season several contracts in an attempt to keep him. He registered 11 goals and eight assists in 38 appearances in all competitions last season - an average of one goal involvement every other game.Wilson joined Fulham in 2021 for £12m from Liverpool. The Cottagers remain without a manager following the departure of Marco Silva to Benfica, but are in advanced talks to appoint former Liverpool defender and Real Madrid interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa.
