I’m sure you know where to find one.OffenseAuburn’s coaching instability has been accompanied by similar quarterbacking difficulties. After Bo Nix decamped to Eugene, Auburn has fielded a bunch of replacement-level guys with the career longevity of a World War I fighter pilot. Remember Robby Ashford? Payton Thorne? Jackson Arnold? Ashton Daniels? Me neither.To stop the bleeding under center, Golesh is bringing along Byrum Brown from South Florida. Brown is absolutely the best athlete the Barners have had at QB since Jarrett Stidham, if not since Cam Newton. He had a breakout year in 2023, passing for 3,292 yards and rushing for 809 more on the ground. His 2024 season was cut short with a leg injury, but last year, he became only the second NCAA quarterback (after Jayden Daniels) to pass for more than 3,000 yards while running for more than 1,000. He also totaled 28 touchdowns through the air and 14 more on the ground. Even adjusted for the talent level of the (brb, Googling) American Athletic Conference, that’s incredibly impressive. The team’s top five receivers from last year (most notably Cam Coleman) are all playing elsewhere in 2026. But Golesh is also bringing four of his top five receivers from USF, so the PlainsTiglesMen passing attack won’t have to worry too much about getting up to speed. Also, two of the new Auburn wideouts have the incredible names of Chas Nimrod and Christian Neptune. That familiarity is a good thing, too, because Golesh’s teams employ a veer-and-shoot offense that requires sharp timing and good decision-making skills on the part of the receivers. The scheme evolved out of the similarly named run-and-shoot and borrows elements of the air raid, although it came into its own when RGIII ran it all the way to the Heisman in 2011. You might consider it somewhat gimmicky, but it’s been successful enough in the SEC on Rocky Top that Tennessee fans now watch their games without paper bags over their heads. Schematically, it’s based on spreading the field, employing trickery to confuse the defense, and ideally going as fast as possible. Receivers generally split way, way out wide to stretch the defense, and they have optional route trees they can run based on their reads of the defenders. Golesh is particularly fond of the trickier elements, often stacking receivers to make the trees even more disorienting. Run by a skilled quarterback like Brown, the veer-and-shoot can make for a long afternoon at the office. Golesh’s offenses are pass-first, but they rely on a ground attack for balance, especially given how much they rely on playaction. They get a decent RB back in Jeremiah Cobb, but Brown led USF in rushing by about 400 yards over the next closest player. So you can expect to see a lot of uptempo shenanigans that have the potential to make you smoke an entire pack of cigarettes during the game. You know, basically the most annoying type of offensive scheme to defend.Fortunately, Kirby Smart has tangled with Golesh a couple of times with no small amount of success. The 2022 Tennessee game is probably the best defensive performance I’ve ever seen on a college football field, so I’m more sanguine about this game than I might otherwise be. Especially since it’s in Athens.DefenseYou might be concerned that Auburn will be less hateable now that Freeze is gone, but worry not! Rather than fumigating the Freeze stench all the way out of the athletic offices, they let DJ Durkin hang around to junk the place up. I really don’t understand why you’d keep him around, but I guess the defense was the stronger side of the ball last year? Maybe? Or maybe nobody else knew the Wifi password and how to work the coffee maker, and they’re going to fire him once they get all the logistics squared away.Regardless, Durkin’s defenses operate out of a 3-3-5 base. Their best pass rusher, Xavier Atkins, is back this year as well, so there’s some continuity. But the 3-3-5 is better suited to stopping a pass-oriented offense. And hey, look at that, Georgia is a team that wants to punish opponents with a brutal ground attack! How about that!PredictionAlex Golesh is the first post-Gus hire that hasn’t made me react like this. I think he’s a good coach, and it’s possible he finally gets things in order on the Plains. But Auburn hasn’t won in Athens in more than two decades. The last time they beat the Dawgs in Georgia, “Gold Digger” was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and you still needed a .edu email address to create a Facebook account. Next year, when we go to Jordan-Hare, I’ll be a lot more nervous, but I don’t think Auburn can break the streak this year. Before the Las Vegas Aces pulled off arguably their most impressive win of the season, a fan was escorted out of the arena after an incident involving Aces guard Jackie Young. Play was stopped for a few minutes as security identified an individual sitting near the court. Eventually, two individuals were escorted out by Indiana Fever security. The incident occurred in the third quarter at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. With the Aces leading 48-44, play was paused after Young pointed at a fan sitting near the court. Officials got arena security involved and the interaction ended with two men leaving the arena with security escorting them out. Not sure what was said, but Jackie immediately pointed out these two bozo fans to get them escorted out of the Aces vs. Fever game. Security almost kicked out the wrong fan, but she made sure they got the right ones pic.twitter.com/y4sm8DCtuR— zavanté ✯ (@zavanchy) August 7, 2026Less than an hour after the incident, the Fever released a statement, announcing there was “no violation of the fan code” and that the fan “elected to leave,” and was not ejected from the contest. The Fever said the incident was considered closed. Given the situation, Becky Hammon, Chelsea Gray and Young were asked about the interaction after the game — which the Aces rallied to win 86-84 in overtime. Young didn’t get into specifics, but said the fan was talking all game and took it a little too far, per USA Today."He was just chirping all game and I let him have it. Then he just made one that was a little bit too far."Hammon also declined to go into detail, only saying that the fan said something that caught Young’s attention.Gray, who hit a buzzer-beater to send the game into overtime and then another buzzer-beater to win the contest, was asked about the issue after the game. Gray confirmed Young took exception to something that was said. Gray then said “clearly [security] found reason to kick them out.” Gray later added, “They had a reason to kick them out. They don’t do that for nothing.”When informed that no violation was found and the fan elected to “remain out,” Gray deadpanned “remained out” at reporters. A Florida woman is suing the city council that suspended her after her history of obscene, racist and homophobic tweets was uncovered and published in a local paper. The councilwoman, Judi Fike, was appointed to her seat in Groveland, Florida last year and is running for a full term. The collection of Fike’s offensive screeds extends back to at least 2015, and reveal deep-seated animus toward Black and LGBTQ+ people. Just hours after the Pulse nightclub shooting in June 2016 in nearby Orlando, Fike posted to Facebook, “Duh….why would the shooter target a gay club? My answer…Easier than marching them up steps to push off the roof..some sarcasm, some truth…” In 2015, Fike posted to her “Widow Fike” account on Twitter (now X), “Can we divert our attention back to real news? The #LGBT freak show has had its run.” Fike owns and operates a catering company called The Black Napkin. Last week, the city council confronted Fike with the posts in an open meeting, displaying screenshots as Fike watched, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Groveland Vice Mayor Barbara Gaines, who is Black, said the posts included “racist” portrayals of then-President Barack Obama as a monkey. “This is a picture of President Ronald Reagan babysitting Barack Obama, except it is an ape, a baboon, a monkey or whatever you call it,” Gaines said. In several tweets shared at the meeting, Fike obsesses over the word “thug”. “#thug the new n word,’ she posted in 2015. “Thug life = thug treatment = no pity from me,” she wrote in 2019. In 2022, Fike shared a meme that read, “What’s the magic word to get what you want? Racist!” Groveland, Florida has a fraught history of racism against Black people. In 1949, false allegations of rape against four black teenagers known as “The Groveland Four” led to the extrajudicial killing of two of the teens and the wrongful imprisonment of two others. They were posthumously pardoned in 2019. In her defense over the Pulse nightclub post, Fike claimed for council members that her message was about a presidential candidate in 2016 aligning with a community in the Middle East who were “pushing gay individuals off of buildings.” “It was meant as a support of the community, not against the community,” she said. “It might have been written in poor taste, but I want to clarify that for you because that was going on at the time.” Fike went further about other posts, denying responsibility altogether. “Those are indeed manipulated, and so I’ll just let that rest,” she said at the meeting. “They are not my words. Some are, there are some copies, but what Barbara just showed were absolutely not products of mine.” Council members were not swayed and voted her suspended until an investigation is complete. Two days later, Fike responded with a lawsuit. “The city does not have the legal authority to suspend or remove any of its members, period,” said Lake County Commissioner Anthony Sabatini, who is representing Fike. “It just simply does not have that authority. Most cities don’t.” Groveland Mayor Kevin Keogh said he was more concerned with Fike’s response to the allegations than the resurfaced posts themselves. “It has to do with the non-truthful nature of your response,” he told Fike, before voting with colleagues to suspend her. So, why did the Brewers miss out on Skubal?As ESPN's Jeff Passan reports, a big reason why the Brewers couldn't land Skubal from the Tigers is the four players they would not trade away for the Cy Young winner. Passan revealed who those four players were who stopped Milwaukee from landing Skubal.4 players Brewers would not trade away for Tarik Skubal"The Brewers immediately told Detroit they wouldn't include 19-year-old shortstop Jesus Made, the No. 1 prospect in baseball, but Milwaukee's minor league depth ran far deeper," Passan reports.Jesus Made not being included in these trade conversations shouldn't be a surprise at all. Skubal, for as good as he is, being traded for the top prospect in baseball would be a major overpay for Milwaukee. It just wouldn't make sense.But that's not all, the Brewers were refusing to give up in Skubal trade talks. These three other youngsters are a lot more intriguing exclusions from the Brewers."Accordingly, the Brewers' list of untouchables went beyond Made," Passan writes. Giuliani was attacking a new program from Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) and Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) to expand the city’s pre-K program to include two-year-olds. They announced that there would be over 2000 spots for kids in the city to join the new “2-K” program, established with state funds, and that nearly three times as many families applied for those spots.
