The Los Angeles Dodgers are calling up reliever Seth Holversen, The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reports. The team has not yet confirmed the move. Halvorsen, 26, was acquired from the Colorado Rockies two weeks before the MLB trade deadline. He had been on the injured list for right shoulder inflammation and was on a minor-league rehab assignment when he was traded. With the Dodgers’ Triple-A Oklahoma City affiliate, he notched 8 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings with no runs and four hits allowed. In 21 appearances for Colorado this season, Halvorsen recorded a 4.74 ERA with 17 strikeouts and 15 walks in 19 innings. But he routinely hits 100 mph with his fastball, which is likely why the Rockies and Dodgers are willing to overlook his control issues. Walks have been an issue during Halvorsen’s three MLB seasons with 38 in 71 career innings, an average of 4.9 per nine frames. The assumption might be that Halvorsen would benefit from not having to pitch so often at Coors Field. However, he actually pitched better there (3.40 ERA) than on the road (5.46) during his career. Dodgers relievers have a collective 4.01 ERA, which is roughly in the middle of the pack among MLB teams. Every time manager Dave Roberts goes to his bullpen, he risks squandering the efforts of the team’s starters, whose team ERA of 3.54 is second-best in MLB. (Overall, the Dodgers’ 3.42 ERA ranks third in baseball.) Closer Edwin Díaz might be a particular cause for concern with 3 blown saves in 8 opportunities — in addition to 12 runs and 17 hits in 10 innings, resulting in a 10.80 ERA. Díaz underwent surgery in April to remove loose bodies in his right elbow and was sidelined for three months while recovering. In five appearances since returning, he has allowed 4 runs and 6 hits (two of them home runs) in 3 innings for a 12.00 ERA. Halvorsen won’t take over as the Dodgers’ closer, not with those control issues. But if he’s able to pitch well in middle innings, that deepens the depth of the bullpen. Roberts can then use his best relievers like Tanner Scott, Alex Vesla and Jack Dreyer in late-inning, high-leverage situations.

Storms impacted the Steelers’ training camp again on Monday. The team had to make some quick adjustments just a few days ahead of their first preseason game. Channel 11 Sports Director Jenna Harner says you could sense the urgency from the team when they took the field at 11 a.m. to get some meaningful work in ahead of the storms. And as they were four reps into the big Franco moment period of practice — they had to leave the field. The PA announcer came over the loudspeaker less than an hour into practice and announced that all fans and media needed to evacuate because of incoming storms. The players were taken to the new indoor facility to finish out practice. When we spoke with head coach Mike McCarthy ahead of practice, he said they had one more install they wanted to accomplish today before they turn their attention to Green Bay. Jenna asked Derrick Harmon if they were able to accomplish all the work they wanted to get in, even though the weather had other plans. “Yeah, we got some good reps,” he said. “We got inside run and Franco moments right before we went indoors. I feel like this, for the offensive line, defensive line, that inside run really helped us. We got a live period in that. Because you don’t get too many, far as real practice with pass on for the o-line d-line and really collide like that. The 2027 NFL Draft will take place in Washington, D.C. next year. In that draft, the Bucs still have their first-round pick, but a lot could happen in the next nine months. Before then, though, there will be plenty of speculation and buildup about the team and who they may add to the roster through the draft in a class many are saying could be generational. Pro Football Network recently released the latest 2027 NFL mock draft of the cycle, which has the team going the offensive angle as they land a new offensive lineman for one of the best units in the NFL. They project the Bucs to take Ohio State's Austin Siereveld. They explain the Siereveld pick, writing, "With the 19th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers landed the impressive Emeka Egbuka, who immediately looked like a star. Two years later, Austin Siereveld’s selection with the same pick would likely conjure less excitement, but sometimes the best picks are the sensible ones."Siereveld plays tackle for the Buckeyes, but for the Bucs, a move inside would make the most sense. He has some movement and size concerns, but the technique and anchoring ability are there for interior success. That was more than 10 times the loss from a year earlier. The per share loss widened to 86 cents from 8 cents.In a conference call after the earnings release, the new chief executive, Kevin McGurn, said a yearlong effort to expand by branching into several new industries including online betting and crypto would now be largely abandoned as he refocuses the business on its social media mission.“We made the disciplined choice to pivot in order to invest more time and resources in our most important initiatives,” McGurn said. “We will say no to things or change course as warranted.” Trump Media stock fell slightly in after-hours trading following the earnings report. The stock had fallen 8% in regular trading.Key to McGurn’s plan is a service called Truth API that offers early access to Wall Street trading firms to top posters on the Truth Social platform. That includes the user with most followers, President Donald Trump, who often moves markets by breaking major U.S policy shifts on the site. Trump Media has been attacked by good government watchdogs from the start of Trump’s second term as a vehicle for him to profit off the presidency. Arnold is in legal limbo after his recent arrest on multiple felony robbery and kidnapping charges, with an arraignment hearing scheduled for later this week. Under an agreement with prosecutors, Eslick would serve no more than four years of probation. The only teams drawing more are the Golden State Valkyries, the New York Liberty and the Caitlin Clark-led Indiana Fever. The Fire have dubbed the Moda Center the “Fire Pit” on game days and the team leans into the motif with pyrotechnics in game introductions. “I think we’ve just been so fortunate, to be honest, all year to have such an amazing atmosphere here at the Fire Pit,” Fire coach Alex Sarama said. “So that’s on the fan base, that’s because of this local community and just turning up and supporting the team as they do.”Portland has long supported women’s sports. For many years, the University of Portland’s soccer team had the top attendance in college soccer, spurred by national championships in 2002 and 2005 and star players like Christine Sinclair and Megan Rapinoe. The Portland Thorns were among the founding teams of the National Women’s Soccer League in 2013 and have regularly been one of the top drawing clubs in the league. And then there’s the Sports Bra, the nation’s first women’s sports bar, which opened in 2022. “We have some of the loudest fans in the WNBA,” center Megan DiLeo said. “And they’re really like our sixth man, to be honest.”This is the second iteration of the Fire. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to pay LexisNexis millions more dollars for continued access to data it can feed into a Palantir platform, according to newly published procurement records. The data is to help, among other sections, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), the part of ICE focused on deportation.The documents provide some more insight into the sort of information ICE intends to use Palantir to process. In January, 404 Media revealed the existence of ELITE, a system Palantir made for ICE that helps the agency find which neighborhoods to target by bringing together data from private suppliers and government agencies.The news comes as ICE arrested more than 51,000 people in July, many of those at airports.💡Do you work at LexisNexis, Palantir, or ICE? LexID and Accurint are LexisNexis tools that take a wealth of data — “over 82 billion public and proprietary records from more than 10,000 sources” according to the company’s website — and link them together to help law enforcement locate people.A screenshot of the document.The document suggests ICE wants to pair these capabilities and data with Palantir systems, too. One part reads, “The government's requirement is that the database must be able to application programming interface (API) with ICE applications, such as but not limited to, Palantir platform, PenLink, and ICE Data Analytics.” PenLink is another company ICE contracts with which 404 Media previously reported on. It sells social media monitoring tools and one called Webloc for tracking the location of mobile phones in entire neighborhoods.Palantir has become a key provider of the technical infrastructure for the Trump administration’s mass deportation mission. 404 Media previously reported that the Palantir-made ELITE, or Enhanced Leads Identification & Targeting for Enforcement, populates a map interface with potential deportation targets, and provides ICE officials with a “confidence score” on the person’s current address. Sources for that tool include the Department of Health and Human Services.It is not clear if ICE intends to ingest LexisNexis’ data into ELITE specifically or some other Palantir platform.The document also lists several requirements around AI. They include “an artificial intelligence (AI) driven identification system” that can use data to “infer the identity of the end user,” and a facial recognition system that can leverage “large-scale image databases to perform high accuracy facial matching across diverse sources, including open-source media.” It must be able to do this in bulk, the document says.LexisNexis, Palantir, and ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Second-year defensive lineman Rylie Mills took the podium first at today’s post-practice press conference to speak about his acclimation, something he missed out on last year due to an ACL injury. He's relishing the small details now and handling media relations surprisingly well, too. It's a quiet indicator of the value John Schneider and Mike Macdonald keep finding in once under-appreciated defensive assets.Mills' development represents everything the Seahawks do well with young talent. He had the athletic tools at 6'5 3/8", 291 pounds, but needed refinement, both physically and technically. An injury complicated things further, but as a day-three selection, the Seahawks weren't expecting him to contribute immediately anyway. That gave him room to build a foundation before getting thrust into action.All he could do was take mental reps. He soaked up knowledge from Leonard Williams, Jarran Reed, Uchenna Nwosu and DeMarcus Lawrence in the defensive line room. Then he got sprinkled in as a capable body on certain downs — and pleasantly surprised the Seahawks exactly when they needed it most.You have to love it for the player. JACKSONVILLE — A recent media interview with Jacksonville State's Walker O’Steen started with a big laugh.O’Steen, a fifth-year linebacker from White Plains High, was requested for a short meeting with reporters after an afternoon practice. Before he walked over, head coach Charles Kelly stopped him and reminded him about what he could discuss and what he shouldn't.When a reporter asked O’Steen what the coach told him, he was about to answer before cutting himself off and saying with a slightly embarrassed grin, "I guess I wasn’t supposed to talk about that. I'll stop myself."The moment drew laughter from everyone, including O’Steen, who was a good sport about it.After that, O’Steen gave a friendly, informative interview — without touching on anything Kelly didn't want him to.That's kind of funny, too, because Kelly just got finished telling reporters about all the good things O’Steen does for the team, but adding that he's very much a lead-by-example kind of guy instead speaking out."He doesn't talk a lot," Kelly said.Later, he added, "As I mentioned, he doesn't say a whole lot."He apparently doesn't need to. Kelly added that O’Steen is on the team leadership council and influences people in a positive way. He's had a good off-season, too, and gained a little weight.Last season when he made second-team All-Conference USA, he played with about 215 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame last season. Now, he's up to about 220 pounds, although from what Kelly said, O’Steen is a tough guy on the field no matter his size.When Kelly accepted the Jax State coaching job in December 2024, he wasn't set to take over the team until after the Gamecocks played in the Cure Bowl in Orlando. Kelly watched that one from the sidelines, and O’Steen caught his attention quickly. That's the game in which O’Steen made two big tackles on special teams.This past season, O’Steen moved into the starting lineup at linebacker and finished with 84 tackles, which were second on the team to fellow linebacker Mac Sanders’ 85. O’Steen also tied for the team leader with six quarterback hurries."He's fun to coach," Kelly said. "He doesn't say a whole lot, but he's got a really good personality. … He has a big influence on people. You don't have to talk a lot to influence people. If you just work really hard, and people see results, they start following what you do."Who better to serve as a team leader than somebody who's done all that O’Steen has?"I haven't really changed anything," O’Steen said, when asked about serving as a leader. "I just kind of do what I always do. I guess I'm a leader for doing what I normally do. Really, I haven't changed anything."As for not talking much, O’Steen said with a smile, "I mean, it depends on what we're talking about."He added, "You know, if we're talking about fishing or something like that, I'll talk a little bit more. That's something I'm a little more into. So, fishing or buying and selling on Facebook Marketplace, you know, I'll probably talk a lot. Or football — I'll talk about football. But other than that …”As for where to fish, he said, "The best place, if you're going to catch the biggest fish, I'd probably say Guntersville. But I normally go to Logan Martin because it's just closer to here and where I live, so that's where I spend most of my time."As for the Jax State defense, O’Steen said it's clear he and his teammates are benefitting from having already worked in this system last season."We all know how things go and what to do," he said. "So, like all those guys back there, like Marc (Woods), Caleb (Nix), Mac (Sanders), Jawaun (Campbell), the D-line, the corners, like Tre’quan (Fegans) — we all know what to do, how to do it. We all know what we're doing, so it's a lot easier. We can communicate, and we're not really guessing on what to do."Watching O’Steen play or practice, it's clear that he's having fun and enjoying the moment."Yeah, it's fun," he said. "I mean, it's just playing football. Winning and being good while you do it, it's a lot more fun."And that last sentence drew one more smile.

Max Miller is staying in the race for his Ohio congressional district, defying voices within his own party who urged him to step aside as he faced domestic abuse allegations from his ex-wife.His determination to press on with his reelection campaign is creating headaches for a Republican Party that had not planned to devote attention to defending the seat in this year’s midterm elections. His Democratic challenger, union ironworker Brian Poindexter, seized on Miller’s controversies by appealing to voters with a promise to “serve with honor.”Monday presented the last chance for Republicans to replace Miller on the general election ballot in Ohio, leaving the congressman in what is increasingly seen as a competitive race.Democratic groups supporting U.S. House campaigns have been closely watching the race for Ohio’s 7th Congressional District, just south of Cleveland, to see if they want to ramp up their support for Poindexter. Following his retirement from the NFL, former quarterback Derek Carr is going back to California. The Fresno native who played college ball at Fresno State and in the NFL for the Raiders before and after their move from Oakland to Las Vegas is headed south. UCLA announced Monday that Carr is joining its football coaching staff as an adviser to head coach Bob Chesney.UCLA general manager Darrick Yray was an offensive assistant and assistant director of football at Fresno State when Carr played for the Bullodgs from 2009-13."I've known Darrick for a long time and have great respect for the work he's done throughout his career," Carr said, per UCLA’s announcement. The Bruins have posted 3-9 and 5-7 records since joining the Big Ten as an afterthought in the football superpower. But UCLA’s woes date back before the move with seven losing seasons in the last 10.Carr raises the profile of the program while facing the daunting task up helping Chesney and Wray turn it back into a winner.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr has joined UCLA's coaching staff as a special adviser to head coach Bob Chesney.The Bruins announced the hiring Monday of the 35-year-old Carr, who is volunteering in his first major coaching role.The longtime Raiders starter will help Chesney and the Bruins’ offensive staff with game planning and strategy, and he will work with UCLA's quarterbacks.“His experience, leadership and football knowledge will be an incredible resource for our coaching staff and student-athletes,” Chesney said in a statement. “What stands out most is his passion for the game and his commitment to developing young people. Derek will have a tremendous impact on our players and is a great addition to our program.”Chesney and his staff are in their first season in Westwood after he was hired away from James Madison last December. Carr's connection to the job was through Bruins general manager Darrick Yray, an offensive assistant and an assistant director of football operations at Fresno State during Carr's prolific career with the Bulldogs.“I’ve known Darrick for a long time and have great respect for the work he’s done throughout his career,” Carr said in a statement. “The opportunity to help Coach Chesney, the staff and the quarterbacks at UCLA was one that really excited me. After two subsequent seasons as the Saints' starter, Carr retired from the NFL in May 2025 due to a serious right shoulder injury.Carr's No. 4 is retired at Fresno State after he passed for 12,842 yards and 113 touchdowns, leading the nation in both categories in 2013 while winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy.At UCLA, Carr will work with presumptive starter Nico Iamaleava, the Tennessee transfer and Long Beach native who passed for 1,928 yards and 13 touchdowns last season for the Bruins.
