Chase Young had a breakout season in 2025, recording 10 sacks in just 12 games played — but that might have only been the beginning. If Thursday's joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars was any indication, the New Orleans Saints' edge rusher could be preparing for an even more impactful year. Young said after the practice that he had a ridiculous number of sacks in the session.“I had six alone, I know,” Young told reporters after practice. “Half a dozen, man. Half a dozen.”Veteran linebacker Kaden Elliss wasn't able to watch every pass rush because his responsibilities occasionally required him to drop into coverage, but he supported Young's bold account. Elliss believes the Saints might have even reached double digits collectively.“If he said he got six, I’m sure we got 10-plus,” Elliss said. “He was rushing extremely well. He had a good day, and he was getting after it.”Of course, sacks are unofficial during training camp practices, particularly with quarterbacks wearing noncontact jerseys, but there was no mistaking Young's impact. He repeatedly disrupted Jacksonville's offense while helping the Saints defensive front control much of the practice.Young wasn't interested in celebrating the performance for long. It's become the standard — and he said he's attributing it to persistence, planning to carry the same approach through the rest of camp: “Just staying at it, man. Just staying at it. EVANSVILLE — I could typically count on one consistent sight at Enlow Field.It never matted if it was sweltering hot in August or below freezing in November. Sam Schulz was always sitting behind the north end zone to watch the Memorial High School football team.You could honestly change the setting to any basketball gym or baseball diamond in Southwestern Indiana. He'd be there if able. That was probably more often that he should have considering his daily battle.Schulz was tougher than most, though.Schulz died on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from a life-long fight with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. He was 22 years old.Toughness can be an undeserving quality for many individuals. Never with Schulz."Sam was a Tiger in every sense of the word," Memorial High School said in a statement. "He was faithful, passionate, compassionate, caring, strong, and inspiring. He was an alumnus, a SuperFan, a friend, and a beloved member of the Memorial Family. Sam filled our halls, our athletic events, and our community with a spirit that was uniquely his, and we are all better for having known and loved him."Sam embodied what it means to be a Tiger."Born with a genetic disorder that caused his skin to become fragile, he spent his entire life with constant pain. Fair enough. He was on a first-name basis with several prominent college basketball coaches, including Chris Beard and John Calipari, and once talked his way into the Atlanta Braves clubhouse. There's plenty more instances of Sam being Sam.He once bet a friend that Michigan State guard Tum Tum Nairn would respond to his direct message on Instagram after a game. That led to text messages with Nairn and eventually courtside seats at Assembly Hall when the Spartans came to Bloomington. That path led to a fandom for the program and frequent interactions with Hall of Fame Coach Tom Izzo, who recently flew Schulz and his family to campus for the first time.The dream scenario was that he'd be strong enough to return in the winter for a home game, but his feeding tube and PICC line stopped working in January. Schulz had declined sharply in health since. The family was informed there wasn’t much more doctors could do.“It made me appreciate and realize how lucky I am that I have kids that are healthy and grandkids,” Izzo told the Lansing State Journal. “It seems like I did something nice for him, or we did. But the truth of the matter is, he did a lot more for us, and I mean that. That's not humility. That's not. That's the truth.”That's because his story was never just about sports. It was about him. It was how he continually persevered despite the disease he was dealt from forces beyond his control. It made it so easy to root for him. What immediately came to mind in that regard was Memorial's run to Lucas Oil Stadium in 2019.Schulz struggled that fall with multiple hospital visits but was able to make the trip to Indianapolis with a sideline pass to watch Memorial football earn its second state championship. He was seen following the game with a blue medal around his neck. One of the players gifted it to him. Because he deserved it. A small dose of what the individual meant to Memorial. And trust me, nothing matched his affinity for everything Memorial.He was a co-host on the Memorial football podcast since its inception despite graduating three years ago."Sam loved Memorial, and Memorial loved Sam right back," the school said. "His impact on our students, faculty, staff, alumni, coaches, athletes, classmates, and friends cannot be measured. His strength inspired us. His passion energized us. His friendship changed us. The example he set will continue to educate hearts and minds for generations of Tigers to come."There are probably not proper words to convey what Schulz meant to this community. His personality and passion always felt genuine, though. It gravitated others to him. He was Sam. Dr. Jonathan Reiner, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s cardiologist, said in an op-ed published yesterday that President Donald Trump “has not looked well” during his second term, adding, “We should know why.” It’s the second time Reiner has sounded the alarm about Trump’s health. “Mr. Trump is probably the most photographed president in American history, and a variety of physical ailments are easy to see,” Reiner wrote for The New York Times, noting the large bruises on his hands, swelling in his legs, his struggles to stay awake, and other eyebrow-raising White House reports on the president’s recent health checkups. If he follows through, it would be a stunning development in a case that rattled business leaders while galvanizing their critics.Mangione’s lawyers, and spokespeople for the Justice Department and Manhattan federal prosecutors declined to comment.Mangione is accused of traveling to New York City to ambush Thompson, 50, then shooting him outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4, 2024, as the executive walked to UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference. Mangione is due in court on Friday for a hastily scheduled hearing in the federal case, which involves two counts of stalking. It wasn’t clear what charge or charges Mangione is expected to plead guilty to. The hearing, in Manhattan federal court, comes as his lawyers have been talking with federal prosecutors about a possible resolution to one of two criminal cases against Mangione in Thompson’s death. Previous talks in June broke down.Mangione, 28, has been charged in both federal and state court in New York and still faces the possibility of a trial in his unresolved state case. Mangione’s state murder trial is set to begin Sept. 8. Both sets of charges carried the possibility of a life sentence. In January, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett took the death penalty off the table but ruled that prosecutors could use items collected from Mangione’s backpack during his arrest as evidence against him.They included a 3D-printed pistol that investigators said matched the one used to kill Thompson and a notebook in which authorities say Mangione described his intent to kill an insurance executive.In June, Mangione’s lawyers said they would pursue a psychiatric defense in the state case but reversed course a day later. The defense, involving claims that he was suffering from extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the killing, isn’t allowed in federal court.Surveillance video of the killing showed a masked gunman shooting Thompson from behind. (Nguyen Sy Thang/VNA via AP)2026-08-13T19:11:16Z HANOI (AP) — Authorities in Vietnam have announced a major seizure of ivory they say was illegally shipped from Africa, Vietnamese media reported Thursday.The haul of 221 pieces of elephant ivory weighing 1,193 kilograms (2,630 pounds) was announced and displayed to the media on Wednesday at Quy Nhơn port in the central province of Gia Lai, said reports by the Vietnam News Agency and other news outlets.Vietnam is a major hub for the illicit trade of wildlife, both dead and alive. Much of the contraband is transhipped to China, but there is also demand in Vietnam itself and other Southeast Asian countries.Thursday’s reports said inspections last week discovered the ivory hidden in sawn timber that was in a shipment of three containers that arrived on July 9.The illegal cargo also contained 79.3 kilograms (175 pounds) of animal bones that the reports said came from animals in the category of big cats, such as tigers. Crushed animal bones are used in traditional Chinese medicine. The website of the Tuoi Tre newspaper said that Gia Lai Provincial Police announced that the shipment had been transported from the Republic of the Congo. It also said that after the contraband’s discovery during customs clearance, a criminal investigation was launched for violation of regulations regarding protected animals. Most trade in ivory from elephants and other endangered animals is banned by international agreement under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, a treaty to which almost all U.N. member countries are parties.While the ivory shipment was reported to be the biggest ever at Quy Nhơn, it has been dwarfed by several others in the past decade of more than seven tons each in the central port city of Danang and the northern port of Haiphong.

Wearing wetsuits and flippers, they swam out over sand, rocks and kelp until they reached their destination: a verdant seagrass meadow. Long, thin ribbons of bright green stretched out in the water, flattened by the strong current. Small fish swam in and out of the grass, as crabs and lobsters crawled underneath. At one point, a seal drifted by.The divers were there to collect a type of eelgrass called Zostera marina. It’s the predominant species of seagrass in Maine. Unlike kelp and other seaweeds, which are algae, seagrasses are flowering plants that grow underwater. Seagrass shelters the young of many marine species, improves water quality and stores some of the excess carbon released by the burning of fossil fuels. Beds of seagrass also absorb wave energy, reducing erosion and buffering coastal communities from storms. These underwater meadows used to grow abundantly along the Maine coast. But they’ve declined significantly in recent decades. The data measuring this decline is imperfect, and efforts to track it are ongoing. But according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s best estimates, the state had more than 30,000 acres of seagrass beds in the 1990s. Since then, some regions of Maine have lost more than half of their seagrass beds.Scientists say they haven’t collected enough data to pinpoint the exact cause of the decline, and they don’t expect to find one simple culprit. Rising temperatures, coastal development, nutrient pollution, harmful algal blooms, invasive species and worsening storms may all be playing a role. Seagrass meadows have declined not just in Maine but around the world, and are considered one of the ecosystems most vulnerable to climate change and other human activity. These meadows are important for the ocean’s biodiversity because they are “the world’s greatest kindergarten” for young sea creatures, said Glenn Page, leader of the dive team and executive director of the Collaborative for Bioregional Action Learning and Transformation (COBALT), a Portland-based group working to restore coastal ecosystems. Page’s diving team is at the heart of a project involving Bowdoin College, the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership and other collaborators called Team Zostera, which aims to study eelgrass reproduction and test methods to harvest, store and transplant the plant’s seeds. Their effort is part of a larger seagrass conservation network in Casco Bay that has sprung up in recent years, hoping to better understand the plant and restore it to places where it has been lost. Read More ‘We don’t have the full picture’Mainers’ efforts to better understand and protect these marine meadows stretch beyond Casco Bay, and date back to at least the 1990s.“A lot of our small, rural, coastal economies depend on the marine ecosystem,” said Cheyenne Adams, a biologist at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.The Department of Marine Resources mapped Maine’s seagrass meadows from 1993 to 1997 and again from 2001 to 2010, but didn’t have funding to continue. The Department of Environmental Protection mapped Southern Maine and Casco Bay from 2013 to 2022, but that left a long data gap in other places, until state legislators funded a new statewide program, which started in 2023 and is run by Adams. She and her colleagues divided the coastline into five regions and have been mapping one region per year. The results so far show significant declines. Between 2018 and 2022, Casco Bay lost more than half of its seagrass acreage. Midcoast Maine has lost about 60 percent since 2005. Penobscot Bay has lost about 35 percent since the mid-2000s. The Acadia region has lost more than half since the late 2000s. And many of the remaining meadows are less dense than they used to be. Downeast Maine is still being mapped. Why this is happening is the “million dollar question,” Adams said. “It’s probably not a simple answer.” Climate change and rising temperatures are likely contributing factors, as are the more severe storms the state has seen in recent years, which can uproot seagrass or bury it with sediment. Invasive green crabs moving north with warmer waters can also tear and uproot the grass.Worsening water quality is another suspect, with nutrient runoff from land fueling harmful algal blooms that shade the seagrass, starving it of the sunlight it needs to photosynthesize. Identifying these stressors is a key first step to protecting and eventually restoring seagrass meadows. “There is concern about being able to restore these systems in time, before it’s lost. But I also think that we don’t have the full picture right now,” Adams said. “We don’t want to restore an area if it’s just going to die.”At the same time, she said, it’s worth laying the groundwork now.Janelle Goeke, a staff scientist at the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership, agreed. Her organization is coordinating the grant that funds Team Zostera and several other related seagrass projects. “By starting this process of understanding earlier on, we’re hopefully putting ourselves in a better situation for restoration down the road,” she said.Researchers have seen some evidence that restoration might be possible. In Casco Bay, some of the eelgrass lost between 2018 and 2022 has come back recently on its own, and her organization is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on aerial drone surveys to measure this change in more detail. Goeke suspects this recovery is because water temperatures have been cooler in the past two years.Eelgrass has a higher metabolism at higher temperatures, meaning the warmer the water, the more light an eelgrass plant needs for its higher rate of photosynthesis. Plants that are getting little light in warming temperatures are at risk of dying off.Goeke has noticed that the eelgrass beds closest to shore seem to be suffering the most, while those growing around outer islands with more exposure to the open ocean are healthier. These meadows ebb and flow naturally, making it hard to know whether any one change will be permanent, she said. But their dynamic nature also offers researchers hope.“If we can get the conditions right, there is a chance for it to come back,” she said.Mother meadows As they kicked slowly over the eelgrass meadow, the researchers from Team Zostera looked for blades of grass bearing seeds, plucking them from the sand and collecting them in mesh bags.Within an hour, the limit of their oxygen tanks, the four younger divers — Savanna Deer, the group’s dive safety officer in training; Ella Kennedy and Hazel Johnson, both students at Bowdoin College; and Dillon Jenkins, a high school student from Scarborough — had collected more than 3,000 shoots. Page had collected nearly 2,000.“The reproductive shoots were everywhere,” he said. “You couldn’t turn without seeing them.”This eelgrass bed, between Haskell and Upper Flag Islands, is healthy enough that it has been designated a “mother meadow,” with enough shoots and seeds to spare for other areas.The researchers are hoping to collect seeds from healthy mother meadows and transplant them to places where eelgrass has been lost and needs help coming back. They are testing out ways to process and plant the seeds, preparing for larger scale restoration.They are also on a mission to build awareness and to make connections with others who care about the ecosystem. While the divers were out in Casco Bay, about a dozen volunteers gathered on land, at Bowdoin College’s Schiller Coastal Studies Center in Harpswell. Coils of eelgrass shoots from the previous day’s dive sat piled on folding tables outside the marine laboratory. Space at the facility is at a premium, so the volunteers were tasked with collecting just the parts of the shoots with seeds, which look like longer, skinnier, transparent pea pods and are called spathes.Inside the lab, pipes delivered seawater from Harpswell Sound into rows of tanks containing an assortment of marine life. A dozen were reserved for the eelgrass spathes. Jaret Reblin, associate director for science at the center, said he expected all of those tanks to be filled after two weeks of dives. As the spathes sat in the water, their seeds would settle out and be collected for research — and, potentially, to be transplanted elsewhere.That day’s group included several chaplains and pastors who had come to Harpswell with the BTS Center, a nonprofit that grew out of the former Bangor Theological Seminary and now helps spiritual leaders address climate change. Alison Patton, senior pastor at the United Church of Christ’s First Congregational Church in South Portland, said that although she’s not a scientist she knows “we need to figure out how to live sustainably.” After eight hours of plucking, the volunteers were sweaty and sticky, with hands pruned from saltwater. They are preparing to launch their own restoration effort in the Damariscotta River’s Great Salt Bay.Team Zostera has also worked with the Passamaquoddy, or Peskotomuhkati in their own language, to incorporate their cultural knowledge into the seagrass restoration effort.“Everything is connected,” said Dwayne Tomah, director and curator of the Waponahki Museum at Sipayik, or Pleasant Point. Tomah has been helping Team Zostera translate seagrass-related terms into Passamaquoddy, naming and describing eelgrass meadows in the language. He’s also part of a theatrical performance about seagrass that the group has been touring around Maine. “The language is how we view the world,” he said. “People, in general, look at the environment as a resource. And we don’t look at it as a resource. We look at it as our relatives.” Hugh Akagi, the chief of the Peskotomuhkati Nation at Skutik, on the Canadian side of the border, is also involved in Team Zostera’s work and echoed this sentiment. Seagrass had helped nourish his community in Passamaquoddy Bay for thousands of years, he said, but now, because of ongoing development along the coast, the ecosystem’s health is “very bleak.” While there is no silver bullet solution, Akagi said, he believes government policies need to change to better protect the environment. In the meantime, he said gathering evidence of what’s happening and educating people can help.Akagi has seen other species come back from the brink. This includes moose, which were once nearly wiped out in New Brunswick but rebounded thanks to conservation efforts. The Kool-Aid has been easy for the Oregon Ducks to sip on this offseason, with praise coming in bunches for the uber-talented roster that appears set to compete for a championship in 2026. There's a likelihood that ten or more players are drafted into the NFL come the 2027 draft, with a number of underclassmen waiting their turn as well. Preseason positional accolades were aplenty as well. But there's some motivation that can be drawn from ESPN's recently released 2026 preseason All-American teams, as just one Duck in defensive tackle A'Mauri Washington made the first team. "Washington brings elite power and explosiveness to the middle of the Ducks' defense and put together a breakout year in his first season as a starter in 2025, recording 33 tackles, 15 pressures and 4.5 TFLs while leading all Big Ten defensive linemen with eight pass breakups," Eli Lederman and Max Olson wrote. "Washington opted to stay in school and keep building his draft résumé while playing on a star-studded D-line alongside returning starters Teitum Tuioti, Matayo Uiagalelei and Bear Alexander."While Washington was the only Oregon player to receive a first-team honor, center Iapani Laloulu and cornerback Brandon Finney Jr. were named to the second team, falling behind Georgia's Drew Bobo and Notre Dame's Leonard Moore, respectively. Both players are in different parts of their careers, as Laloulu is entering his third season as the Ducks' starting center and came close to winning the Rimington Trophy in 2025, awarded to the nation's top center. Finney emerged as a star in the Ducks' secondary as a true freshman, far surpassing his four-star status and becoming an All-Big Ten second team selection. But while both are considered near the top in the country at their positions, they fall just short of being named the best by ESPN.A number of notable Ducks were left off the list altogether, with quarterback Dante Moore arguably being the most questionable snub. Instead of Moore, fellow Big Ten passer Julian Sayin from Ohio State got the first-team nod while Notre Dame's CJ Carr holds the second team slot. While both are considered to be among the leaders in Heisman Trophy odds and should have strong seasons, it's a real slight on Moore that could be proved incorrect come the end of the season. Each of tight end Jamari Johnson, safety Koi Perich and edge rushers Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti, all of whom have commanded early-round NFL draft attention in 2027, were left off the first or second teams as well. Experts say it had nothing to do with human activities.Here’s a closer look at the facts.CLAIM: HAARP caused the 7.4 magnitude earthquake in western Colombia on Monday.THE FACTS: This is false. The U.S. Geological Survey says that the Colombia earthquake was caused primarily by “strike-slip faulting” — when two sections of Earth’s crust move horizontally past each other. The epicenter of the earthquake is within the country’s Pacific region, which lies along the “Ring of Fire,” a line of seismic faults encircling the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes occur. “No human endeavor caused this earthquake,” said Suzan Van der Lee, a seismologist and professor at Northwestern University. “The Colombia earthquake occurred in a region with many natural earthquakes.”She said there are cases where human activity in shallow parts of the Earth’s crust such as gas extraction or waste water injection has caused small- to moderate-magnitude earthquakes. But the earthquake in Colombia occurred at a depth of 110 kilometers — at least 10 times deeper than any caused by humans, Van der Lee noted. The University of Alaska Fairbanks has operated HAARP since 2015. It was previously run by the U.S. military, which still owns the land where the program is located. In addition to allegations that it can cause earthquakes, believers have falsely claimed that it is a mind-control device and that it can control the weather.Researchers at HAARP study the physical processes occurring in the highest parts of Earth’s atmosphere — the thermosphere and ionosphere — by using high-frequency radio transmitters to heat small regions and observing the effects. The program uses many scientific instruments, but the one that is often at the heart of conspiracy theories is its Ionospheric Research Instrument (IRI), the world’s most powerful high-frequency radio transmitter.“I can confidently state that there is ZERO physical basis for radio-frequency transmissions having any effects on the occurrence of earthquakes,” said Dean Whitman, a geophysicist at Florida International University, who called hypotheses about HAARP’s supposed impact “ridiculous.”He pointed to a number of reasons the claims are not valid. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have at least one viable site for a new stadium in northwest Indiana and they are examining a second location as they move closer to finalizing a place for their new home.The Bears announced in June that they were moving forward with a stadium development project in Hammond, Indiana. They have completed their review of what they are calling the Lost Marsh site, and they are doing their due diligence on the Wolf Lake Terminal site. They could merge the two options together in some way.“Even though we’ve had occasional meetings with the state of Illinois, our sole focus at this point in time is working on a world-class stadium and mixed-use development in Hammond, Indiana,” team President Kevin Warren said Thursday.The Bears also had been considering Arlington Heights — about 30 miles northwest of Chicago — as a potential location for an enclosed stadium. Wherever they end up, a name change is off the table. “We will be the Chicago Bears whether we’re in Arlington or whether we’re in Hammond,” chairman George McCaskey said. The Bears, a charter NFL franchise, have played in Illinois since the team’s founding in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys. They moved to Chicago in 1921 and called Wrigley Field home before they started playing at Soldier Field in September 1971.The Bears’ lease runs through 2033, but they can pay a fee to break the lease early. Soldier Field is about 40 miles south of Halas Hall — the team’s headquarters in Lake Forest — and Hammond is about 20 miles south of the team’s lakefront stadium. McCaskey acknowledged the “anxiety” of a move to northwest Indiana for the team’s fans. We think Bears fans are up for that.”The Bears ramped up their focus on Indiana after a proposal to provide financial incentives for the team to build its new home in Illinois stalled in the state legislature. A committee in the Indiana House of Representatives passed a bill in February that established a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority to finance, construct and lease a stadium. The Illinois Senate passed a bill that would have cleared the way for Arlington Heights and Chicago to create local stadium authorities, creating a pathway for the Bears to avoid paying property taxes on a new stadium. But the House adjourned without taking up the measure on the last day of the state’s spring legislative session.McCaskey said the team has had minimal conversations with Illinois legislators since June. Asked if he was hopeful about Illinois coming up with a plan and building in Arlington Heights, McCaskey demurred.NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell “has said to us many times in league meetings, ‘Hope is not a strategy,’” McCaskey said. “We have to deal with the here and now. We have to deal with real circumstances, and these are the real circumstances.”The Bears have been pursuing a new home for years, but the process has been hampered by repeated twists and turns. The team announced in September 2021 that it had signed a purchase agreement for 326 acres of land in Arlington Heights. The $197 million deal with Churchill Downs Incorporated was finalized in 2023.In September 2022, the team unveiled a nearly $5 billion plan for Arlington Heights that called for an enclosed stadium that could host Super Bowls and Final Fours. The conceptual illustrations also provided for a year-round entertainment district with restaurants and shopping.But the Bears shifted their focus toward building a new stadium next to Soldier Field after Warren was hired as team president in January 2023, replacing the retiring Ted Phillips. The plan to transform Chicago’s Museum Campus got an enthusiastic endorsement from Mayor Brandon Johnson and a tepid reception from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and state legislators when it was announced in April 2024.The team switched gears again in May 2025, announcing it had made “significant progress” with local leaders in Arlington Heights. Amid lingering efforts to secure tax incentives in Illinois, along with as much as $855 million in public money for infrastructure at the Arlington Heights site, the Bears began to take a closer look at possible options in northwest Indiana.“We’re in regular, almost daily communication with the state of Indiana working on this,” Warren said. “We have an excellent deal, a win-win partnership together. Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua missed practice on Thursday after leaving the joint practice with the Cowboys two days ago with an injury. Sean McVay revealed that Nacua has psoas soreness, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports. The psoas is a deep core muscle that is a primary hip flexor.Nacua is expected back to practice next week, McVay added.Pass rusher Myles Garrett also spent Thursday working off to the side with the Rams' training staff. It was the seventh practice Garrett has missed with knee soreness.The Rams remain confident that Garrett's absence won't linger. McVay called Garrett's knee at 85 percent on Tuesday.

Should he cede his welterweight title to Garry on Saturday in Philadelphia we will be seeing the UFC in a light that we aren’t used to. That is, as a league of unextraordinary gentlemen. There won’t be any tyrants left holding belts. We won’t have a fallback Anderson Silva or a stubborn Georges St-Pierre or a “Mighty Mouse” refusing to lose or a Jonny “Bones” Jones out there bleating from the top of the field. We won’t even have an Israel Adesanya to reassure us that dominance, as we’ve come to know it, is still a thing. Instead, should Garry follow the summer theme by upsetting a GOAT-like champion, we’d have a blue-collar workforce holding belts. Look at the list. We’re facing the possibility of having the Tom Aspinall/Ciryl Gane heavyweight champion Janus face holding titles, alongside Carlos Ulberg (205), Sean Strickland (185), Ian Garry (!), Justin Gaethje (155), Alexander Volkanovski (145), Petr Yan (135) and Joshua Van (125). Longshoremen, stevedores and jab-savvy cartwrights.On the women’s side Valentina Shevchenko is still a terrific standard, though she has long been considered vincible, and bantamweight champ Kayla Harrison has already telegraphed her intentions to make her reign short-lived. Even though UFC 330 isn’t the greatest card the UFC has ever assembled, the fact that Makhachev is on it does away with a great many shortcomings. The fact that he’s facing Garry, a fighter the fans love to hate, gives his first welterweight title defense a sense of purpose.If Garry wins, the concept of superfights takes a mighty blow. Earlier this year we bemoaned not getting Topuria-Makhachev, seeing it as the best fight that could be made. Would Gaethje-Garry qualify as a consolation prize? Only Makhachev is left to have a say. These are strange times. The UFC has always had those transcendent figures looking down at their classes. In the pay-per-view era, this structure was not only the norm but the mandate. There had to be dominant champions to sell the stakes. Why? Because a challenger can only shock the world if he’s made to defy the “no chance in hell” decrees. Everyone knows that the best moments are the ones that shatter our strongest hunches, when contenders overcome collective doubt. Yet those moments can only be best if they seldom happen. The job of a dominant champion is to crush hope, which is a trade secret for keeping order. As of July’s edition of the Uncrowned’s men’s pound-for-pound rankings, Makhachev sits in the No. 1 spot as the best fighter on the planet. The next man up? Ex-flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja, who lost his title to young Joshua Van at UFC 323 in December. It was a fluky ordeal, you might recall, as he dislocated his elbow trying to catch a fall early in the fight, but it left him with a definitive “L” either way. Van has even gone on to defend his title against Tatsuro Taira back in May.Yet as each giant gets slayed, Pantoja, even without the belt, is slowly defaulting his way to the top. And right after him is Volkanovski, the guy who lost twice to Islam a few years back, and who got smoked by Topuria before his recent resurrection. If Islam loses on Saturday night, perseverance replaces dominance. At least for the time being. The tendency is always to pull for the underdog. But when underdogs begin to rule the world, you get to looking around for the stabilizing force. It’s down to Makhachev. “I think he’s good person, good guy, but he act like he’s bad boy, something like this,” Makhachev said during media day. “We’ll make him humble, we’ll make him good guy.” Aw yes, the old way. Just like his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov used to do. Remember this run? The old way is to humble a challenger and to rule with an iron fist. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Fever All-Stars Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell supported coach Stephanie White on Thursday, saying they were disappointed by the boos during White's introduction at Tuesday's home game.The comments came two days after a fiery, 2 1/2-minute monologue by White during which she defended herself after some critics contended she didn't show enough support for guard Sophie Cunningham when she took a hit across the head and neck area last weekend at Chicago. Referees upgraded the foul from a Flagrant 1 to a Flagrant 2, resulting in an ejection of Sky guard DiJonai Carrington.“I think Steph does a great job with us,” Boston said before practice. “We love her and appreciate her and so to hear (boos), it was really annoying, honestly, and disrespectful. But for us, the main thing is the main thing, and we said we’re going to come out here and get that win.”They did win — in resounding fashion, 106-92 over the Commissioner's Cup champion New York Liberty.Following the game, Cunningham and three-time All-Star Caitlin Clark both backed their coach. Cunningham told reporters she had no problem with White's comments after the Sky game that she thought the refs made the right call, but that she didn't think Carrington was intentionally trying to hit Cunningham above the neck.Carrington also wrote “WHITE PRIVILEGE” and tagged the Fever account on social media after the ejection. Baseball’s obsession with strikeouts took Thursday afternoon off at Comerica Park.The Detroit Tigers shut out the Cleveland Guardians, 3-0, without recording a single strikeout. Not one. Keider Montero, Tyler Holton and Kenley Jansen collected 27 outs entirely through contact, completing one of Major League Baseball’s rarest pitching performances.It was the first MLB shutout without a strikeout since former Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello accomplished the feat in 2014. Only nine such games have been recorded since 1995.Detroit did not overpower Cleveland. It simply refused to give the Guardians anything useful to hit.Keider Montero Controlled the Game Without Missing BatsMontero’s final line looked almost contradictory: 6⅓ scoreless innings, three hits, one walk and zero strikeouts across 88 pitches.Pitchers are usually judged by their ability to miss bats. Montero won by making Cleveland swing.The right-hander repeatedly worked the Guardians into harmless contact, keeping the ball away from damaging areas and trusting the defense behind him. Cleveland put ball after ball into play, yet rarely produced anything that threatened Detroit’s lead.Montero retired 19 of the 23 hitters he faced. He allowed only three hits and did not let a Cleveland runner score despite pitching without the traditional escape hatch of a strikeout.It was another important step for a pitcher whose place in Detroit’s plans looked far less secure in March. The Tigers optioned Montero to Triple-A Toledo during spring training, then recalled him in April.Five months later, he owns a 9-7 record, 3.22 ERA and 0.99 WHIP across 128⅔ innings, according to the Tigers’ official pitching statistics.That is not merely rotation depth. Dillon Dingler guided Montero through the afternoon from behind the plate and handled the final innings as Holton and Jansen finished the job.There was also some good fortune involved. Every unusual baseball accomplishment needs a little.A close replay review in the seventh inning upheld an out at first base when Torkelson appeared to flirt with coming off the bag. In the ninth, a foul popup dropped between Dingler and McGonigle, briefly giving Cleveland additional life.Neither play changed the result.Jansen kept the ball in the yard, trusted the fielders behind him and secured his 15th save. He did not record a strikeout or issue a walk, needing just 95 pitches to finish Detroit’s 3-0 victory.Twelve years later, another Tigers right-hander helped produce the next zero-strikeout shutout in the majors.Montero did not complete Thursday’s game himself, so his outing will not be remembered exactly like Porcello’s masterpiece. The shared formula was unmistakable: attack the strike zone, limit hard contact and make the opposition string together hits.Cleveland never did.Modern baseball has moved aggressively toward velocity, movement and strikeouts. Cleveland finished with four hits and no runs.That was enough.Torkelson’s performance carried extra importance with Riley Greene sidelined by a hamstring injury. Detroit needs an established hitter to anchor a lineup featuring McGonigle, Valencia and recently promoted prospect Max Clark.The Tigers are also navigating another outfield injury after placing James Outman on the injured list. Winning low-scoring games becomes even more valuable when the lineup is missing regular contributors.The Tigers Suddenly Have a Real Wild Card StoryDetroit has won nine of its last 12 games and took two of three from Cleveland.That matters because the Tigers entered the series fighting for their postseason lives. It also matters because the Guardians had spent much of the season tormenting them.Detroit’s deadline decisions created plenty of frustration, particularly after the organization reshaped its pitching staff. Jansen recently offered a confident message about the remaining roster, and the Tigers have backed it up by continuing to win. Detroit’s young core has refused to treat the deadline as a surrender.Now comes a larger test.The AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox arrive at Comerica Park on Friday. Detroit will have an opportunity to prove this run is more than a brief response to deadline turbulence.The Tigers may not resemble the roster fans expected to watch in August. They remain relevant, and Thursday’s bizarre little piece of baseball history ensured they will not be ignored.Bottom LineKeider Montero did not record a strikeout Thursday. Neither did Tyler Holton. Neither did Kenley Jansen.The Tigers still produced 27 outs and allowed zero runs.Detroit’s 3-0 victory over Cleveland was not built on overpowering pitching. It came from command, weak contact, sharp positioning and a defense willing to work for every out. In an era dominated by radar-gun readings and strikeout totals, the Tigers found a different route into the history books.More importantly, they won a series and kept their postseason hopes alive.That is the history Detroit fans should care about most.

(AP) — Ty Gibbs' car will be adorned in the multicolored M&M's paint scheme made famous by former teammate Kyle Busch during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway next month, Busch's widow announced Thursday.“Bristol was always one of Kyle’s favorite tracks,” Samantha Busch wrote on X. “He loved racing under the lights, found so much success there, and the iconic M&M’S car holds some of the best memories of his career and our life together.”Busch, 41, died May 21 after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming complications.Busch and the No. 18 Toyota M&M’s car were synonymous when he drove for Joe Gibbs Racing from 2008-22. I think we all know by now this whole “2026 Mariners” thing probably isn’t going to work out. Maybe it’s the great Dan Wilson conspiracy. Maybe it’s the bad hitting, pitching, fielding and base running. Maybe it’s a nuanced third thing. I don’t really care anymore, which I guess is kind of the point.One thing I love about following a team from Pacific Time is the occasional morning baseball game. When I was in elementary school the Mariners played a game in Boston that started very early (I think it was this game). I remember pestering the bus driver until she agreed to put it on the radio for the 30 minutes or so it took to get to school. It’s a small example of how baseball — even awful baseball — tends to sneak itself into the background of life and help breakup the monotony of the week.So rather than recap this baseball game, let’s just recap my morning, with baseball.I woke up at 9:30 or so. Well, actually I woke up on the couch at about 6:30 when my wife began her morning routine. I’ve been tremendously sick this week, with some sort of upper respiratory infection that, perhaps coincidentally, began after spending too much time in Spokane’s wild fire smoke this weekend. I’ve been sleeping long, weird hours, trying not to let my incessant hacking and sniffling disturb the flow of our household. After moving to bed and getting another three hours of sleep, I woke up feeling pretty good for the first time in several days. This is one of the great natural highs of life, to find yourself on the other side of sickness. It was a good day from the start.With only a few moderate coughs, I got ready myself, then fed the animals and took the dog out, making sure to go far enough down the sidewalk to space out her toxic piss from last night’s relief. We live in a long line of identical town houses, but ours is identifiable by the patch of dead grass out front. Whoops.Back indoors I quickly realized we’re out of coffee beans and added “walk to coffee shop” to my list of morning ablutions. But first, the game preview. Yes, in sickness and in health, the show must go on here at Lookout Landing, so I quickly wrote a few paragraphs that nobody read (me neither) to preview Thursday’s affair. Once that was published, I turned my attention to my actual work-from-home job, sending emails, updating spreadsheets, loading data, and filling myself in on the last few days. The game started in the background at about 10:35. Not long after, I saw a camera flip and zoom in on the left field wall, revealing Weston Wilson had snuck a solo homer over the fence against the excellent Max Fried. I doused myself in sunscreen, leashed up the dog, and set out for the trail. Our dog, Arrow, is a German Shorthaired Pointer, which means she has a sort of manic energy that keeps the leash taut. She’s also eight-plus with fairly severe arthritis, so she generally slows down after about five minutes, preferring to roll in the grass than move forward. That’s OK, as Gameday implied there was little reason to rush back. It was actually the first beautiful day in Spokane in weeks, with the smoke from our wildfires having moved on to pester other regions (sorry). The trail was packed, with plenty of Spokanites taking advantage of what’s likely a brief window of blue sky. It was nice to see the familiar faces (and snouts) of the neighborhood again. I got a 16 oz iced Americano and finished it by the time I’d returned for the seventh.The score was still 1-0, back at my desk. Logan Gilbert was no longer on the mound, having been removed after six scoreless innings. I can’t claim to have seen much of it, but the stats imply he was sharp. His velocity was up, and he got 15 whiffs, seven strikeouts, and a ton of weak contact. The Mariners pitching has been really bad of late, with the starters struggling to work deep into games (especially on the road) and the bullpen shallow behind them. While the lineup and Dan Wilson will steal most of the post-mortem for the season, the second-half cratering from the pitching staff is why the Mariners are no longer even mediocre. Gilbert offered a nice change of pace.Eduard Bazardo was on the mound in the seventh. He got two quick outs, then made things interesting by walking consecutive batters. After working Amed Rosario 0-2 on four straight pitches right down the middle, he threw a fifth pitch up-and-away that Rosario took for a ball. Jhonny Pereda challenged and ABS confirmed it had just nicked the zone for strike three. It was Pereda’s fourth correct challenge of the game, and his third challenge resulting in a strikeout. There haven’t been a lot of bright spots for the Mariners this year, but it’s been a joy to watch Pereda exhibit competence as a backup catcher, especially on defense.And then suddenly, Aaron Goldsmith was announcing “no wiggle room” for Andrés Muñoz heading into the bottom of the ninth with a 1-0 lead. I figured I’d tune in for this part. He got a groundout, then a pair of strikeouts to end the game 1-0. Not a bad way to start the day.

Jake Browning suffered a back injury during Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Jets, according to head coach Todd Bowles, putting his status for the preseason opener in question. Bowles did not provide details on the severity of the injury or how much time Browning could miss. It's an important development for a Buccaneers team that signed Browning in March specifically to provide experienced depth behind Mayfield. Browning entered camp with a significant advantage over Tampa Bay's other backup options. He spent the previous three seasons as Cincinnati's backup and made three starts in 2025, completing 81 of 125 passes for 771 yards and six touchdowns.If Browning isn't able to play against the Jets, the preseason opener becomes a major opportunity for Jalon Daniels and Connor Bazelak. Daniels, in particular, could suddenly find himself receiving significantly more meaningful reps as Tampa Bay evaluates its quarterback depth. That doesn't necessarily mean the Buccaneers have a problem at backup quarterback. Browning's injury could prove minor, and Tampa Bay has time to determine his availability before the regular season, but it highlights how quickly a position can become vulnerable.Mayfield is the unquestioned starter, and the Buccaneers have no interest in putting him in unnecessary preseason action, at least in game one. That makes having a reliable number 2 quarterback particularly important. Browning was expected to provide that security, but his injury now gives the younger quarterbacks behind him an unexpected opportunity. They made the signing of veteran free agent JaMycal Hasty official, an acquisition we already talked about here and analyzed here, while also placing fellow running back Terrell Jennings on injured reserve.Let’s take a step back and analyze what the latter of the two transactions means for the club.Out for the yearThe NFL recently tweaked its injured reserve rules last year, allowing teams to reactivate up to two players sent to injured reserve on the final day of roster cuts. With Jennings being moved to the reserve list on August 13, however, he is not eligible for that treatment: his season is over.Assuming that recently-released Myles Montgomery clears waivers, that means Jennings will become the fifth player whose season has found its end before even the first preseason snap. Also in the same boat than the two running backs are tight end Julian Hill and wide receivers Jimmy Kibble and Jeremiah Webb.For Jennings himself, this marks a second straight season ended on injured reserve. Last year, he was moved to IR in mid-December and while later returning to practice was never actually activated and reverted back to the list before the Super Bowl.RB competition changes againAs we mentioned in our position battle analysis from earlier on Thursday, Jennings’ return after opening training camp on the non-football injury list turned the running back competition on its head. He immediately slotted in the No. 3 role behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, and did not cede any ground since.With him now out of the picture, however, the competition and the entire composition of the group have changed dramatically. For now, the running back depth chart looks like this:Running back (8): Rhamondre Stevenson (38), TreVeyon Henderson (32), Reggie Gilliam (44 | FB), Lan Larison (34), Jam Miller (30), Hassan Haskins (—), JaMycal Hasty (—)IR (2): Terrell Jennings, Myles MontgomeryThe aforementioned Stevenson and Henderson are locked into their roster spots, as is fullback Reggie Gilliam. Who will be the third back, meanwhile, remains to be determined after neither Lan Larison nor Jam Miller could seize the opportunities they had while Jennings was out the first time.Maybe newly-signed Hassan Haskins or JaMycal Hasty can make some noise. Both have familiarity playing under Mike Vrabel and experience in the NFL both from an offensive and a special teams perspective, which brings us to:Special teams impactWhile most of the focus surrounding Jennings’ move to season-ending IR will be on his role. as the third running back, his contributions in the game’s third phase cannot be underestimated either. After all, he had been part of multiple starting special teams units during training camp: he lined up as a kickoff return option during Tuesday’s joint practice alongside Kyle Williams, Efton Chism and Lan Larison, and also had been used on the punt team.As noted above, the Patriots’ replacement running backs, Hassan Haskins and JaMycal Hasty, both have special teams experience as well. Still, looking at the Jennings injury through a kicking game lens shows just how valuable of a contributor he could have been in 2026.Possible cap savingsMoving Jennings to injured reserve does not change the Patriots’ salary cap number. While the transaction does remove his $1.075 million base salary from the active roster, he is still getting paid while on IR Meanwhile, the player that will be taking his spot on the Top 51 list is carrying the same salary.There is a chance that the Patriots could limit Jennings’ cap impact at one point, in case they exercise a split salary provision. Depending on the agreement, this would end up slightly decreasing his cap hit.Second shoe has droppedWhen we broke down the as-of-then-unofficial JaMycal Hasty signing earlier on Thursday, we mentioned that a second shoe was about to drop. Hasty would have put them over the offseason roster limit, which necessitated a follow-up move. We now know that it was placed Jennings on IR.Consequently, the Patriots head into Thursday night’s game against the Colts with 91 players on their active roster. They are able to carry 91 instead of the typical 90 because offensive tackle Lorenz Meth has a roster exemption due to his status as an international player.

2026-08-13T21:06:53Z State officials announced a “dramatic drop” in the number of children with behavioral health disabilities who have been placed in institutional settings and other changes, including the launch of new services as well as service rate increases, marking progress on Nevada’s efforts to comply with federal disabilities law since the Department of Justice called out the deficiencies four years ago.Ann Jensen, administrator of Nevada Medicaid, described the decrease and new community-based mental healthcare model as a “big win” that needs to be celebrated. Still, she said it’s just the first of many improvements that must happen.“It’s reflective of a lot of small pieces of our system continuing to improve on a daily basis,” Jensen told The Nevada Independent. “But there’s going to be a lot more work to make sure people get access to the care they need.” Data from the Nevada Health Authority indicates that youth with behavioral health disabilities who were covered by the state-managed Nevada Medicaid program and placed in psychiatric residential treatment facilities decreased from 35 percent (404 youth out of a population of 1,147) to 16 percent (382 youth out of a population of 2,408) since January 2025.Behavioral health disabilities can manifest in a range of ways, including acute mental health crises, significant emotional or behavioral dysregulation, or safety concerns such as self-harm behaviors or aggression or risk of harm to others. The data focused on the highest acuity Medicaid-eligible children in the state who are tied to the settlement agreement, defined as youth with a serious emotional disturbance or serious mental illness and high utilization of behavioral health services, such as emergency room visits, mobile crisis or other behavioral healthcare. The reduction in the percentage of institutional placements by more than half comes after the Department of Justice (DOJ) determined that Nevada was unnecessarily segregating children with behavioral health disabilities in institutions such as youth psychiatric hospitals — many of which were out of state — instead of more homelike environments in their communities. Read More The changes are part of a five-year settlement agreement between the state and the DOJ after findings that Nevada had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. They also come as the state has invested more than $100 million in children’s behavioral healthcare through Nevada Medicaid, which will help raise reimbursement rates for rural and in-home therapy services, specialized foster care services and residential psychiatric treatment for children with complex needs. What did the institutional placements look like? What were the harms of that environment?In 2022, the Department of Justice published a 25-page report detailing the state’s failure to provide “community-based services” (such as therapy, crisis support and behavioral support programs) that led to hundreds of children being “isolated in residential treatment facilities each year” when they might have remained with their families if those services existed. On average, children remained in those facilities for nine to 12 months, with about 27 percent staying more than a year.Reporting from the DOJ found children experienced emotional trauma and disruption. One example cited in the report was of a child who spent almost 15 months away from home in in-state and out-of-state facilities and described his only desire as “to not be here.”Psychiatric residential treatment facilities are associated with elevated risks of physical and sexual abuse, the report noted, and long-term stays in such facilities are linked to delayed cognitive and language development, emotional attachment disorders and increased risk of substance abuse. What are community-based services and why are they a better approach? Community-based services such as therapy, crisis support and behavioral support aim to keep individuals with disabilities or other healthcare needs in their own homes and neighborhoods.A 2013 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services bulletin notes that offering community-based services is more effective and cheaper (saving an average of $40,000 per child annually) than long residential stays. The DOJ report also noted that community-based programs typically lead to increased emotional strengths, better school outcomes and fewer suicide attempts, among other benefits. What is the new community-based mental health model and how does it work? The state announced this month that it was launching a short-term therapeutic home model that’s meant to be homelike and less restrictive than inpatient or intensive psychiatric facilities.Jensen noted that the model is more implicit than explicit in the agreement. The model was established through an interim health bill in the 2025 legislative session, AB514, which recommended developing these step‑down, community‑based options. The goal, Jensen explained, is to have short-term stays at the facility of between one and three months. Trained behavioral health professionals who staff the home support children in their routines, school attendance, community activities and interactions with family. Jensen added it will serve as a home in a neighborhood or other residential community that allows kids to go about their daily life — something that’s not possible in institutions far from home. The new model will allow children to receive higher levels of care, without automatically being sent to a residential treatment facility.“The ultimate goal is these residential homes are not intended to replace the child’s home,” she said. “They’re just there for a short time to get the skills, get the support they need to then move back home and be really successful.”She and others clarified that the model is not meant to replace psychiatric residential treatment facilities nor is it inherently better than those facilities. Instead, it is intended to add an intermediate, community-based residential treatment option to a system that previously only supported children needing a higher level of care going directly from home to highly restrictive psychiatric residential treatment facilities or staying in those facilities for longer than necessary.“There always will be that need for this type of residential institutional treatment, but it needs to be very specific to their clinical situation, and for a limited time while we focus on discharge,” Jensen said. Is this shift more expensive?No. Jensen said it’s more expensive to have children in inpatient care than offering them community-based outpatient services. She estimated that a day at a psychiatric residential treatment facility costs the state between $800-$950 per child. What challenges are Nevada officials facing while making this shift?Offering a short-term therapeutic home option requires new staffing and infrastructure investments as well as system design and culture change, Jensen said.For decades, Nevada defaulted to institutional placements because intermediate options didn’t exist. Many psychiatric residential treatment facilities tried to fill the gap by creating more community-like group homes, but they were often ill-equipped to take care of children, she said, and many of the youth placed in those settings needed secure psychiatric treatment that only a psychiatric residential treatment facility could provide.Jensen noted that “secure” refers to ensuring that the environment is safe and appropriately structured for youth receiving psychiatric treatment. She clarified that it doesn’t always mean a locked facility, but it does require safeguards that prevent children — who may be in crisis or vulnerable — from leaving the setting unsafely and ensuring that clinical staff can maintain a therapeutic and protective environment.“Moving toward a ‘community-first, least-restrictive’ approach requires realigning how decisions are made when children present with behavioral health needs that cannot be treated with simply outpatient or home services,” Jensen said. Is the DOJ still monitoring compliance with the settlement and when does that “probation” end?The settlement, signed on Jan. 2, 2025, is a five-year agreement between the state and the Department of Justice. Jensen said the state works closely with the DOJ on all required reporting and compliance activities, including meeting monthly with the team. Though the agreement is technically five years, it could be dismissed before 2030 if the state comes into compliance before then. What is success? 2026-08-13T20:56:33Z ORLANDO (AP) — Authorities are searching for a trio of modern tomb raiders that they say has stolen family heirlooms and other valuables from cemeteries in at least nine states.The suspects — a mother and daughter, and the daughter’s boyfriend — “went on a tour of the eastern half of the United States,” breaking into niches and mausoleums, said Corporal Cole Brazee of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Officers have arrest warrants out for Porsche Bancroft, 32, her boyfriend, Drake Lee Milam, 33, and her mother, Angela Garrett, 52. All three are from Indianapolis, Brazee said in a video shared to social media. The warrants would have the suspects extradited back to Florida to face charges there.Detectives are investigating 20 cases in Florida and believe there could be many more, according to the sheriff’s office.
