(AP) — White House border czar Tom Homan defended Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s plan to give officers gloves that deliver painful electric shocks, calling them a tool to help officers end confrontations without using deadly force.“It’s another device to help someone get compliant when they are not,” Homan said Thursday in an interview on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends.” “You can’t just go from 0 to 100, right, and the first thing you go for is lethal force.”Homan’s remarks were the Trump administration’s first public defense of ICE’s plan to spend up to $20 million to purchase thousands of “conductive distraction and de-escalation devices” for officers and agents. The devices are known as the G.L.O.V.E., which stands for Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter, and are manufactured by Compliant Technologies LLC. They have been used in recent years by some jails and police departments. The plan has drawn intense criticism from civil rights groups, Democrats in Congress, and some use-of-force experts, who say ICE agents have been too quick to use force while carrying out President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. At least six people have been shot and killed by immigration enforcement agents since last year, including motorists last month in Maine and Texas.Homan argued the gloves could help avoid such encounters. He said they would give another less lethal option to ICE officers, similar to Tasers or pepper spray, for use in potentially violent situations on the streets and in detention facilities. He said that it would “be awhile” before the gloves are deployed in the field by ICE officers because the agency is still working out training protocols and other policy issues. In Bardstown, Kentucky, Nelson County Jailer Justin Hall said Thursday that his agency began using the gloves four years ago to try to gain compliance when inmates are out of control. He said that, unlike Tasers, the shocks do not incapacitate people and make them fall or leave contact or burn marks. He said the shock gloves have been used sparingly, but are helpful as an initial deterrent when de-escalation techniques do not work. “It’s just a safer way. It’s safer on the inmate. Opening statements at the murder trial in Las Vegas are expected to begin Monday. Family members and fans of the legendary rapper have been waiting for decades to learn the truth behind the 1996 drive-by shooting that left Shakur dead at the height of his career. Shakur was just 25 when he was shot near the Las Vegas Strip at a time when he was in the middle of a fierce battle for dominance in a music scene shaped by rival gangs. Authorities three years ago charged Duane “Keffe D” Davis with murder, describing him as the “shot caller” who orchestrated the killing. Davis has pleaded not guilty and could be sentenced to life in prison if he’s convicted. Sixteen jurors were picked for the trial, which is expected to last about a month. Four will be alternates. During the selection process, potential jurors were asked about their favorite books and movies, if they had any strong feelings about gangs, and whether they had listened to Shakur’s music. (AP) — Lindsay Clancy searched online about hallucinations, psychosis and the side effects of several drugs she was prescribed in the weeks before she strangled her three young children in January 2023, according to an analysis of her phone data presented at Thursday’s murder trial in Massachusetts.Clancy looked up suicide methods, bipolar disorder and insomnia at the end of December 2022 and, in January, went in search of information on postpartum depression. She also wrote a detailed note in October 2022 expressing doubts about her parenting choices, second-guessing her decision to stop breastfeeding her 8-month-old, and reconsidering plans for a fourth child. The defense says she was in the grip of bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, a rare condition that can alter a woman’s sense of reality after childbirth. A forensic psychiatrist diagnosed Clancy with those conditions following the killings. In her note, the 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse seemed most concerned with not being able to give her youngest child the same attention as her first two, ages 3 and 5. “I’m terrified of something happening to my kids or doing something wrong to mess up their development,” Clancy’s note read. “Our generation is inundated with information about every aspect of parenting. ... Andrade/The New Bedford Light via AP)2026-08-13T21:27:47Z The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office must hand over hundreds of anonymized health records of immigrant detainees following a Massachusetts court ruling.Judge James Budreau issued the order, released Wednesday, a month after attorneys for the sheriff and the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts sparred in Suffolk County Superior Court. “I think this is a decision that is important for government transparency and the rights of immigrant detainees,” said Dan McFadden, managing attorney at the state ACLU. “(The Sheriff’s Office) cannot exempt itself from public records law simply by contract with ICE.”Karen Barry, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, told The Light in an email that the office will comply with the order.“As the judge acknowledged, this is a novel case,” she said. “We appreciate the court’s guidance.” The ACLU sued for numerous records generated for immigrant detainees at Plymouth County Correctional Facility, the only immigrant detention facility in Massachusetts. That stems from a contract the department signed with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2024. The ACLU sued after the Sheriff’s Office denied a public records request. At the July 7 hearing, the Sheriff’s Office relied largely on legal concepts of pre-emption — arguing that federal law prohibited them from issuing the health records. The sheriff’s attorneys argued that federal dominion over immigration law pre-empted the state’s public records law in this case, despite the Sheriff’s Office being a state agency. Budreau brushed that concern aside in his decision. “The state law at issue is not, however, an attempt by the Commonwealth to regulate the documentation of immigrants,” he said. “Rather, the question before this court is about the state maintaining records relating to the state’s police powers and oversight of the health and safety of persons held in state facilities. Jessica Kenny, the sheriff department’s attorney, argued that the ACLU could attempt to procure the documents through a federal Freedom of Information Act request to ICE. “These documents were created pursuant to the (ICE-sheriff agreement), so ICE does have the records,” she said. When Budreau pressed Kenny on whether the redaction of detainees’ names, alien registration numbers, and any other identifying information could resolve the issue, she quickly assented.“If those are redacted, there’s no way of connecting that to a detainee?” Budreau asked.“Presumably no,” Kenny responded. History of issuesPlymouth County Correctional Facility began to house immigrant detainees through a contract with the now defunct-Immigration and Naturalization Service in 1998. It is currently the only such facility to house immigrant detainees long term in Massachusetts. According to its contract with ICE, Plymouth sets aside 250 beds at the facility for immigrant detainees. The agency pays the Sheriff’s Office $215 per day per occupied bed. The contract also obligates the Sheriff’s Office to create the health records. The ACLU filed its initial records request seeking those records on Dec. 11. “The availability of medical care in immigration detention facilities is vitally important, as immigration detainees have no other way to seek medical help while detained,” wrote Mackenzie Saunders, an ACLU attorney, in the original complaint. “And for some, not receiving medical care can be a matter of life or death.”A 2024 report published by the Boston University School of Law and Prisoners’ Legal Services of Massachusetts found through interviews with detainees that Plymouth authorities did not provide detainees with necessary care and services. It recommended the sheriff ensure inmates had timely access to necessary medical care and to discontinue the use of solitary confinement. Another 2024 report by the ICE Office of Detention Oversight found the prison had “no deficiencies” in treatment. As of Aug. 4, 57 people had died in ICE custody nationwide since Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, according to the National Immigration Project. The ACLU cited the fatalities, and other reports of ill-treatment, in its complaint. Several of those detainees died of what may appear to be minor problems. Andrade/The New Bedford Light via AP)2026-08-13T21:26:45Z The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday restored several pieces of a 2021 Texas election law that overhauled mail-in and assisted voting, overturning a lower court’s block on those provisions.Five years ago, Texas passed Senate Bill 1, a wide-reaching election law that changed the way local officials administer elections and how some Texans vote, particularly aimed at initiatives Harris County implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The law was denounced by voter advocacy groups, civil rights organizations and Democratic lawmakers, who broke quorum in an attempt to stifle the bill.After several lawsuits over accessibility concerns created by the new law were consolidated into a single suit, a district judge in March 2025 struck down nine of its provisions. Those blocked provisions included requiring Texans to provide an identification number or social security number on mail in ballot applications and have them match the state’s records. The judge also blocked provisions that create processes for curing defective ballots and require voters and those who assist them in filling out their ballot to sign an oath swearing they did not coerce the voter and disclose how they’re related. The plaintiffs who sued argued the provisions were overly cumbersome and restrictive for voters with disabilities, and the district judge agreed, ruling they violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. Texas allows voters who are over the age of 65 and those with certain disabilities, among others, to vote by mail.Wednesday’s 11-page ruling from the Fifth Circuit reverses the district judge’s ruling in its entirety, finding that the plaintiffs lacked standing on most of their complaints. The written opinion strongly rebuked the lower courts’ decisions in the suit, noting that appellate judges have “reversed the district court on everything” through the suit’s five years of litigation. “The bulk of the plaintiffs’ claims fail for lack of standing. One fails on the merits. But none justifies interference with the State Legislature’s efforts to prevent voter fraud and to protect election integrity,” Judge Andrew Oldham wrote in the opinion. Shortly after they relocated to the small market, the NBA superstar duo headlined several deep playoff runs.While Durant and Westbrook never brought home an NBA championship in their eight years together from 2008-16, they remain one of the most successful duos in league history. For many young secular Jews, Yiddish has provided a route for connection with their heritage and Jewish identity unaffiliated with Zionism — and its stark support for the Hebrew language — that they have become increasingly disillusioned with.For Dan Kedem, who came from the Tel Aviv area to volunteer at Yiddish Summer Weimar, Yiddish is “a sort of path of redemption from the reality that I grew up in within Israel,” he said. He described feeling like the Jewish story taught to him in Israel was “linear” and “narrow.” “So one of the things that I found most fascinating about Yiddish is that exploration of this other Jewish culture, identity and root system of paths and ideas has allowed me to explore my own identity through a much wider lens and open myself to new ideas and new thoughts,” Kedem said.Opportunities for Yiddish language study have exploded across the world, and a report by the Yiddish academic journal Ingeveb cited over two dozen programs, camps and festivals in the summer of 2026 alone. The popular language-learning app Duolingo reported nearly 300,000 users for its Yiddish language course this year, the majority of whom are under 25, according to a recent report by RNS and NPR.Bern estimated that at least half of the participants at Yiddish Summer Weimar are not Jewish. For many of them, connecting with the Yiddish language fills a gap in their national histories and European identity. “The Jewish world, for me, as a German cis male, has always been something like a secret world, something unknown, something maybe a little bit mysterious,” said Michael Panzner, an intercultural consultant from Frankfurt, Germany. “But I know that it’s very relevant for Germany’s and Europe’s history and development over the centuries.”Growing up, he never knew any Jews in Germany, and when he met some as an adult in North America, he didn’t feel comfortable asking his many questions. In Weimar, he said, he found an opportunity to explore this culture he thought was lost from his country in a non-judgmental environment. He hopes to continue going for many more years.“I think (Yiddish) is being given way too little attention in today’s cultural life and social life,” he said. Malowicki agreed, saying many of her students see Yiddish as an “entry ticket into a culture.” And while Hasidic dialects are by far the most spoken among modern Yiddish speakers, opportunities to learn the Hasidic dialect from native speakers like Malowicki are relatively rare.“I see it as a chance to create a bridge between worlds that otherwise wouldn’t have a bridge or a connection,” she said. “I think that there’s a lot that we can learn from one another and our different worlds.”Such experiences are exactly what Bern hoped participants would find in the program.“I and my colleagues definitely view Yiddish from a transcultural and transnational point of view,” Bern said. “That’s also unusual for people who tend to think of Yiddish as the culture of some isolated shtetl in the East and separate from all other cultures and doesn’t have any links toother cultures.”To that end they have long worked to involve countries and cultures far outside of Ashkenazi Jewry in the program. In the past that has included youth orchestras from Poland and France, and today the Yam Ensemble, which brings together young musicians from Germany, Greece and Turkey to explore the shared influences and heritage of Mediterranean and Klezmer music.Of all the places for a festival of Yiddish culture in Europe, Weimar may seem like a strange place.Unlike Warsaw, Vilnius, Krakow and other cities where there are Yiddish programs and cultural festivals, Weimar is not a great city of Jewish or Yiddish speaking history. But it couldn’t have found a more fitting or important home, Bern stressed.The city is most associated with two things, European high culture and the rise of fascism. It’s where Adolf Hitler reformed the Nazi Party in 1926. And just as Weimar and the Thuringia region became a hot bed of support for the Nazi Party in the 1920s and 30s, it’s also the largest base today for the far-right Alternative für Deutschland Party, often labeled a Neo-Nazi party.“It’s very ironic to think that here is a place that has a large Yiddish music festival, maybe one of the biggest in the world, and sold out concerts and everything, and it’s this same environment in which there’s a neo-Nazi movement that is just growing all the time,” Bern said.As for Weimar’s place in European cultural history, Yiddish isn’t out of place either, Andreas Schmitges, the festival’s curator, said.“Weimar is a place of what they call German hochkultur (high culture). It says he stabbed his wife, 41-year-old Kristen Brown, and their daughter, Evie Brown, inside the daycare that Kristen Brown operated out of the family’s basement in Hopkins, a suburb of Minneapolis. He then fatally shot himself in an upstairs closet. Hopkins police said in a statement Thursday that they are still investigating. According to police records, a father dropping off two of his children for daycare heard screams coming from the basement. The father entered the home and initially thought Nathan Brown was performing CPR before realizing it was an attack. The witness called 911 and fled with his children and two other children. Authorities said Wednesday that they believe Nathan Brown earlier killed a 78-year-old relative at her home in Burnsville, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Hopkins. Nathan Brown had recently been living there, investigators said. 2026-08-13T23:11:59Z LAS VEGAS (AP) — The yearslong case against six Nevada Republicans who were accused of submitting a bogus certificate that falsely declared Donald Trump the winner of the state’s 2020 presidential election has been dismissed, a judge ruled Thursday.The dismissal marks the latest setback in swing states’ efforts to prosecute fake electors who tried to keep Trump in the White House after he lost to Joe Biden in 2020. Three other fake elector cases in states have been dismissed. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes recently dismissed her office’s criminal case but vowed to bring it back to a grand jury in hopes of securing another indictment. The dismissal was a legal maneuver aimed at getting around a deadline for starting new grand jury proceedings after Mayes lost an appeal earlier in June.The attorney general’s office plans to appeal the case. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, who is also running for governor as a Democrat, brought forward charges relating to forgery and “offering a false instrument for filing or record” against the six Nevada Republicans, who pleaded not guilty. They include Michael McDonald, the chair of the Nevada Republican Party, and Jesse Law, the former chair of the Clark County Republican Party. After the 2020 election, the six Republican electors gathered outside of the Nevada Legislature to sign a certificate giving the state’s six electoral votes to Trump, despite Biden winning the state by more than 30,000 votes. Former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold is planning to sign with the Seattle Seahawks while facing felony charges of kidnapping and armed robbery, per multiple reports. Arnold reportedly agreed to terms with the Seahawks on Thursday.Arnold was arrested in Florida on June 24. The 23-year-old cornerback was charged with four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery after voluntarily surrendering to police.He was released on $1 million bond five days after his arrest, after initially being held without bond. The Lions released him shortly afterwards.Despite his legal issues, Arnold had drawn interest from NFL teams, and had tried out with Houston Texans, New York Giants and New Orleans Saints in addition to the Seahawks.Arnold's release on bond means that he is free to join Seattle for now, with his trial still pending. However, it's possible that Arnold will still be punished under the NFL's personal conduct policy, which allows the league broad judgment to suspend players who engage in actions detrimental to the league's public image — usually related to violence, drugs, or other illegal activities. It is also possible that the NFL will place Arnold on the Commissioner’s Exempt List for this upcoming season.After being selected by Detroit with the 24th overall pick in 2024, Arnold played in 24 games for the Lions across two seasons.Arnold's 2025 season came to an early end after he underwent shoulder surgery in December. Prior to that, he racked up 23 solo tackles and an interception in eight games.Arnold had an arraignment hearing scheduled for Thursday that was conducted remotely. Arnold was allegedly not present at the ambush, but prosecutors say that he sat outside the apartment in a car and watched it happen on a FaceTime call.Investigators allegedly found a group chat with all members of the group, in which Arnold and his childhood friend Boakai Hilton Jr. gave instructions to the other alleged co-conspirators.Arnold had initially denied his involvement in the situation, but during his arrest, Tampa police pointed to him being "the primary conspirator" in the plan. Six others were arrested in connection with the case: Hilton, Lyndell Hudson, Freddie Lee Hughes III, Christion Williams, Arianna Del Valle and Jasmine Randazzo.Del Valle and Randazzo pleaded guilty and agreed to testify in future proceedings, according to a June statement from the State Attorney's Office in Hillsborough. Randazzo was sentenced to four years in Florida State Prison, followed by six years of probation. Del Valle, who was identified by a judge in February as Arnold's girlfriend, entered an open plea with the court and will be sentenced later.

Out actor Neil Patrick Harris said in an interview published yesterday that he publicly came out as gay in a November 2006 statement to People magazine at the age of 33 in anticipation of online blogs potentially outing the then-young actor. Talking with Great Company, a videocast hosted by Jamie Laing, Harris (who is now 53) said he began dating his husband David Burtka before he auditioned to play Barney Stinson, a scheming and competitive womanizer, on the sitcom series How I Met Your Mother (which ran from 2005 to 2014). Cincinnati — Detroit Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. was taken to the locker room after leaving the game following a second-quarter tackle on Cincinnati Bengals running back Tahj Brooks on Thursday night.Rakestraw, who appeared to be favoring his left arm earlier in the drive after taking some friendly fire from linebacker Devin White, upended Brooks with 12:03 to go in the second quarter and remained on the turf. Defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike waved the training staff over and immediately took a knee as Rakestraw was being examined.Rakestraw eventually jogged off under his own power but was not moving his left arm or shoulder. He was briefly examined in the blue medical tent before being taken back to the locker room.The development is undoubtedly frustrating for the third-year cornerback, who's had the start of his NFL career derailed by injuries. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks and cornerback Terrion Arnold are working on a contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday.The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the contract hasn’t been finalized.Arnold, 23, is facing eight felony charges stemming from allegations he orchestrated the abduction and beating of three men in February. He became a free agent in June, when the Detroit Lions released him a few days after the kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy charges were levied.Prosecutors in Florida said Arnold arranged for the men to be pistol-whipped after he wrongly suspected them of stealing $100,000 in cash and luxury goods from him. Police called him the “primary conspirator” in the Feb. 4 attack, and a judge set his bail at $1 million.Defense attorney R. Timothy Jansen said in Hillsborough County court earlier this summer that Arnold is “absolutely denying these allegations.” Denise White, the CEO of EAG Sports Management, an agency that represents Arnold, said there’s “no credible evidence” against him, only accounts from others who may have an incentive to get a lighter sentence.Arnold has played in 25 NFL games, including playoffs, since the Lions took him with the 24th pick of the 2024 draft out of Florida State. U.S. Attorney Aaron Reitz confirmed the tests were negative for meth in a statement to The Texas Tribune, the news organization reported Thursday. Reitz did not say what the substance actually was, but an attorney for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s family has said it was a homemade electrolyte mixture that Salgado Araujo and his construction crew used to stay hydrated in the grueling summer heat. Salgado Araujo, 52, was killed July 7 when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in unmarked vehicles chased his white work van through the streets of Houston, then shot him through the window. He had been driving his work crew, including his brother, to a construction site.
