SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRogers vows Chelsea fireworks with Palmer: ‘We’re different —and we’ll make each other better'Rogers vows Chelsea fireworks with Palmer: ‘We’re different —and we’ll make each other better'Morgan Rogers has promised that he and Cole Palmer will bring the best out in each other at Chelsea this season.Rogers hassigned for Chelsea in a £117m club record deal and reunites with close friend Palmer at Stamford Bridge. The two progressed through the Manchester City academy together before becoming senior England internationals, though some have questioned how Xabi Alonso will fit the duo in the same Chelsea team.Rogers, who scored his first Chelsea goal agains Real Sociedad at the weekend, has laughed off those questioning their compatibility.Speaking toSky Sports, he said he and Palmer possess complementary qualities and promised their on-pitch connection will match a long-held friendship."I've seen people saying, 'how are you going to fit them in? How are they going to play?'"We have completely different qualities. He's more of a passer, a linker, a combiner. He's like an artist in the way he moves with the ball and plays with it."I'm more direct, more straight line and more physical. We're completely different and that offsets really well."I've known his game, he's known my game since we were what, 14? We've played with each other at England and stuff like that, so we know exactly how to play with each other and to get the best out of each other."Some people might not know how it looks like, but we do. We know how it looks, we've done it before. People will pit us against each other, but we're on the same team now and it's about winning and getting the best out of each other, and I think we'll do that."Off the pitch always helps on the pitch - and playing with one of your closest friends always [helps] bring the best out of each other in a competitive way of wanting to kind of outdo each other. But there has to be a line of the team comes first, and winning comes first, and that's always been our biggest thing."0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNFL power rankings: Preseason rankings for NFC WestThe NFL preseason has begun and every team has played at least one game. We have some idea as to what teams will look like competitively in 2026. NFL.com's Nick Shook has new preseason power rankings. We have to figure that the Arizona Cardinals are fairly low on the list, but let's see what the NFC West as a whole looks like, compared to the entire league. LA Rams, No. 1You've heard the sound bites, read the headlines and drowned in the tidal wave of optimism. The Rams are Lombardi Trophy favorites, seemingly destined for a march to a Super Bowl that will be played in their home stadium, the same location in which they won their last title. It's never that easy, of course, but GM Les Snead has built a monster in Los Angeles. With Myles Garrett trading brown and orange for royal blue and sol, Aaron Donald nearing a potential return from retirement to hop back onto the bandwagon he once captained, and Matthew Stafford coming off an MVP-winning season, this is a year the Rams go for it all. It will be up to them to make it through to the other side of a season-long gauntlet in their attempt to claim the throne. This is no surprise. With the return of Matthew Stafford, an offense that was fantastic, and with the defensive additions of Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie, the Rams are the team to beat in 2026. Seattle Seahawks, No. 3The reigning champs lost Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency, don't yet have his former running mate, Zach Charbonnet, available as he continues on his journey back from a torn ACL, and are placing a lot of backfield responsibility on the likes of rookie Jadarian Price and backup George Holani. Star defender Nick Emmanwori remains on the physically unable to perform list, too, although there's hope Mike Macdonald's ultimate chess piece can return in time for Week 1. Otherwise, everything is great for the Seahawks. Continuity will reign early in 2026, thanks in large part to the return of a familiar starting offensive lineup. The suffocating defense lost some pieces to free agency in the offseason, requiring reinforcement that could be tested, but there's little reason to think the 'Hawks will be anywhere but right back in the thick of the NFC race. They are the defending champs and have a devastating defense. They have questions but still look very much like a title contender. San Francisco 49ers, No. 16I'm likely underrating San Francisco at this stage, but that's why the Power Rankings are performed frequently -- almost as frequently as the visits the 49ers receive from the injury bug. Yes, for yet another year, the Niners are already adjusting to losses. Ricky Pearsall is done for the season, George Kittle is still working back from the Achilles injury he suffered in January, and three other receivers (Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, De'Zhaun Stribling) are battling ailments. The good news: The 49ers still reached the Divisional Round last season despite dealing with a ton of injuries. They're nothing if not experienced in how to endure such challenges. This feels low, but can they maintain such fortune and win while players are out? Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and George Kittle are on their way back, so they definitely still are one of the most talented teams in the league. Arizona Cardinals, No. 26Once you're done sipping the Carson Beck Kool-Aid (I know, it really is refreshing), come take a seat with me and consider where the Cardinals are right now. They're entering 2026 with a veteran bridge quarterback, another respected backup behind him and a rookie who turned heads in the Hall of Fame Game. While it carries a lower ceiling, that scenario suddenly doesn't sound too bad, especially when considering the weaponry Arizona has assembled: newly minted Madden NFL 99 Club member Trey McBride, No. 3 overall pick Jeremiyah Love, former No. 4 overall pick Marvin Harrison Jr. and 1,000-yard receiver Michael Wilson. Not bad! Much of the Cards' success will depend on whether they can protect Jacoby Brissett and if they can consistently get stops defensively. But despite this No. 26 ranking, I'm shifting toward a sunnier outlook with this team. This is higher than expected, as they have been ranked as low as 32nd. But the offense is giving encouragement. There is no such encouragement on defense, as the unit appears to have the same holes they did last year. Jean Carroll exits the New York Federal Court after former President Donald Trump appeared in court, Sept. 6, 2024, in New York. (AP Photo/Eduardo Munoz Alvarez, File)2026-08-17T13:46:24Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday again rebuffed President Donald Trump’s push to throw out a jury’s $5 million finding that he sexually abused the writer E. Jean Carroll at a New York City department store in the mid-1990s and later defamed her.The Republican president’s lawyers had asked the justices to reconsider their refusal to hear his appeal. The court denied Trump’s petition along with several others. It’s unusual — although not unheard of — for the court to grant such requests. Trump paid the judgment shortly after the court declined to take up his appeal in June. Trump and the Justice Department are also asking the high court to toss out a second Carroll verdict totaling $83 million. They argue he’s immune from being sued over comments he made about her in 2019, when he was president. The court has not yet acted on that appeal. Carroll is a longtime advice columnist and former TV talk show host. She testified at a 2023 trial that Trump turned a friendly 1990s encounter into a violent attack in the dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury retailer across the street from Trump Tower in Manhattan. The jury found Trump liable for defaming Carroll when he denied her allegation in 2022. Trump has denied any wrongdoing. The Associated Press does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Carroll has done.___Follow the AP’s coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court at https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court. (AP Photo/Dieudonne Dirole)2026-08-17T13:23:53Z BUNIA, Congo (AP) — Congo’s fast-moving Ebola outbreak has now killed over 2,300 people and become the deadliest outbreak of the disease on record in the Central African nation. The outbreak unfolding in one of Congo’s most vulnerable regions is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever, with 4,945 cases including 2,325 deaths, according to government data released overnight into Monday. This is Congo’s 17th and largest Ebola outbreak. The toll eclipses that of the country’s 2018-2020 outbreak when 2,299 deaths out of 3,481 cases were recorded. The latest data shows 101 new cases and 33 deaths reported in the previous 24 hours. Over 1,000 people have recovered, while 730 remain in hospitals or isolation. The outbreak has infected and killed more people at a greater speed than any other outbreak in history. The World Health Organization has said it is on track to surpass the 2014-16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the deadliest on record with more than 11,000 deaths. There are no approved vaccines or treatments for the rare Bundibugyo virus responsible for the current outbreak across six provinces in Congo’s east. Trials for those are ongoing in Ituri province, the epicenter. Most new cases and deaths are being reported outside of people being monitored. Challenges also include strikes by some unpaid health workers, threats by rebel groups, anger from long-traumatized communities, territories difficult to reach due to bad roads, and misinformation asserting that Ebola isn’t real. WHO warned over the weekend that the outbreak is still moving at an “exceptional pace” ahead of efforts to track it, noting that it reached a weekly record of 579 cases and 304 deaths in the previous week. Read More “A substantial scaling up of response activities is underway to get ahead of the outbreak,” the agency said.On Friday, United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher announced the allocation of an additional $30.5 million and the deployment of 20 more staff to aid the response on the frontlines.“This is a wake-up call,” Fletcher said. “We need speed, scale and solidarity before this virus gets even further ahead of us.”0 Reacties 0 aandelen 20 Views 0 voorbeeld

koppeltekenAPNEWS.COMPremier League is back and uncertainty pervades start of post-Guardiola eraArsenal's manager Mikel Arteta is thrown in the air by the players celebrating their Premier League title after the English Premier League soccer match between Crystal Palace and Arsenal in London, England, May 24, 2026. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung, File)2026-08-17T08:20:52Z The post-Pep Guardiola era is getting underway in English soccer amid uncertainty and upheaval — not just at Manchester City but across the whole of the Premier League.Get this: Heading into the new top-flight season beginning Friday, nine clubs have new permanent managers — an unprecedented number at the start of an English top-flight campaign. At age 33, Fabian Hürzeler is the fifth longest-serving coach in the Premier League ... and he has been at Brighton for just two years. The biggest vacuum needing to be filled is at City, following the departure of Guardiola after 10 record-breaking years in charge. Good luck following that, Enzo Maresca — especially after the team’s lamentable performance in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal on Sunday. Among the other top clubs with new coaches are Liverpool (Andoni Iraola), Chelsea (Xabi Alonso) and Newcastle (Matthias Jaissle) — all of which competed in the Champions League last season. Heck, it makes Roberto De Zerbi — appointed by Tottenham on March 31 to escape relegation — and Michael Carrick — installed as interim manager at Manchester United for the second half of last season before impressing and getting the permanent job — seem like veritable veterans. It also makes Arsenal, the reigning champion, appear a haven of stability as Mikel Arteta goes into his seventh full season at the helm as by far the league’s longest-serving manager. Yet, there’s a big question mark hanging over the Gunners, too: Will there be a hangover after winning the league for the first time in 22 years? Read More We’re about to find out, though Arsenal’s display in the Community Shield provided early encouragement for its fans. The non-stop roller coaster that is the Premier League begins in earnest Friday night when Arsenal hosts promoted Coventry, which has a compelling backstory of its own after being out of the big time for 25 years. Here are some other storylines providing a backdrop to the new season: Is Premier League lacking superstars? The Cristiano Ronaldo circus left town in 2022. Harry Kane moved away in 2023. Kevin De Bruyne departed in 2025. Mohamed Salah quit for Turkey this offseason. Rodri looks set to leave these shores for Barcelona, too.It begs the question: Is the biggest league in the world lacking the biggest players in the world?OK, City still has prolific striker Erling Haaland, whose brand has never been higher after wowing American fans during the World Cup.But soccer superstars like Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Vinícius Júnior, Lamine Yamal and even England’s own two top players in Kane and Jude Bellingham play in other countries. All-time greats of this century — think Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane — never played in England, either. The big blockbuster deal of the offseason could have been Vinícius joining Arsenal, but he chose to stay at Real Madrid. The Premier League has recently prided itself in having the world’s top coaches, yet Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are no longer around. The competition might have to settle, then, for having the greatest strength in depth, with the middle-level clubs having arguably never been better owing to the league’s huge broadcasting deals. Arsenal starts as title favoriteAmid so much turbulence among its rivals, Arsenal has a great opportunity to retain the title and is the favorite with British oddsmakers.Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has joined from Newcastle to bolster an already-strong midfield, left winger Christos Tzolis signed from Club Brugge to replace the departed Leandro Trossard, and there is strength in depth in every position.Counting against Arsenal, however, is an injury to defensive mainstay William Saliba that will rule out the France centreback for the first few months. Also, there’s an intangible: Will there be a drop-off in intensity or motivation after finally winning the league?Arteta is determined that won’t be the case. New faces — and some old ones — are backWelcome back, Marcus Rashford. The England winger has rejoined Manchester United after a loan spell at Barcelona. Whether he wants to be at Old Trafford remains to be seen.Hello, again, to Frank Lampard, a Premier League great for Chelsea who is now manager of Coventry.Coventry, a founding member of the Premier League, was relegated in 2001 and plunged into such financial chaos that the club lost its home and went on to drop into the fourth tier. The Sky Blues’ rise is one of English soccer’s feel-good stories and they are back as one of three promoted teams, along with Ipswich and Hull.$3 billion and counting: England still the big spendersEngland is in a league of its own when it comes to spending power and Premier League clubs’ outlay on new players in this transfer window is approaching $3 billion already. The biggest signings so far have all been midfielders: Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for $156 million; Elliot Anderson to Man City for $155 million; Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for $133 million; and Guimaraes to Arsenal for $100 million. Chelsea’s net spend is almost $300 million as Alonso reshapes the squad. Tottenham has spent around $300 million on new players alone in a reversal in policy following back-to-back 17th-place finishes. The window is open for two more weeks, as transfer activity cranks up after the World Cup.Will Premier League still be set-piece heavy?A significant change in English soccer last season was a reversion to old-school tactics such as long throws into the area, a reliance on set pieces and long clearances by goalkeepers, in a perceived snub to the Guardiola-influenced style of play where possession of the ball was king. With Guardiola now out of the picture, will this trend increase further? Marco Rose at Bournemouth, Pierre Sage at Crystal Palace, Alvaro Arbeloa at Fulham and Alonso at Chelsea are all coaching in the Premier League for the first time. Will this wave of new managers establish another different approach? (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell, file)2026-08-17T09:27:27Z RIYADH (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo says this Saudi Pro League season is likely to be the last of his professional career. The 41-year-old superstar’s contract with Riyadh club Al-Nassr, signed in December 2022, expires next June, and he has told Vogue magazine that another is unlikely.“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo said. The Portugal forward, who has scored 976 career goals, married long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez, earlier this month.“I have my future all mapped out,” he said. “I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.“And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned — what we’ve earned. Because after all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.” The 2026-27 SPL season is Ronaldo’s 25th as a professional. During his career, he has won five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles.Ronaldo’s 28 league goals last season helped Al-Nassr become champion of Saudi Arabia in May to secure his first trophy since arriving in Riyadh, and a first league title for the club since 2019.After returning from his wedding, he missed Al-Nassr’s first game of its title defense on Saturday, watching from the sidelines as it opened with a 3-0 win over Al-Fateh. “Cristiano is here today, and he is always present with us,” Al-Nassr coach Ange Postecoglou said after the game. Read More Ronaldo could play against Al-Diriyah in the King’s Cup on Tuesday.“The most important thing now is recovery, especially as we have only two days after this match,” former Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest coach Postecoglou said. Ronaldo’s comments came days after long-time rival Lionel Messi revealed that, following his father’s death, he may soon retire.“I don’t know how to carry on,” Messi, 39, said. “I used to just play football, and now I’m really not sure if I’ll carry on doing it for much longer.”__See AP’s full soccer coverage here0 Reacties 0 aandelen 20 Views 0 voorbeeld

(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)2026-08-17T10:00:07Z The middle of the American League standings has turned into a medicore mess.It might make for a fascinating playoff race. There are seven teams fighting for the final AL wild-card spot and all of them have a record below .500. The Baltimore Orioles would make the playoffs if the season ended Sunday, sporting a 61-63 record.Right behind them: The Texas Rangers (61-64), Toronto Blue Jays (61-65), Detroit Tigers (60-64), Minnesota Twins (60-65), Cleveland Guardians (60-65) and Seattle Mariners (59-66). The Houston Astros could be in the mix as well with a 63-62 record that gives them a narrow advantage in the AL West. Many of those teams were sellers at the trade deadline this month. The Blue Jays traded outfielder Daulton Varsho to the Astros, the Orioles traded former No. 1 pick Adley Rutschman to the Red Sox and the Tigers dealt ace Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers and right-hander Casey Mize to the Padres. Now at least one of those teams might find itself playing baseball in October anyway.Only three teams in MLB history have made the playoffs with a losing record and all of them happened during seasons when the schedule was much shorter than normal. The 1981 Kansas City Royals (50-53) qualified for the postseason thanks to a split-season format caused by a players’ strike during the middle of the summer. In 2020, the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers both squeezed into the playoff bracket with a 29-31 record during the pandemic-shortened season that had an expanded playoff field of 16 teams. Trivia questionJoshua Báez became the first player to hit three home runs in his big-league debut, leading the Cardinals to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Only seven players have hit even two homers in their first regular-season game in the majors since 1900. Who are they? Read More The workhorse returnsMiami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara has had a great bounce-back season with a 13-7 record and 3.43 ERA after struggling last year following Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss the 2024 season. He’s also doing what he does best — pitch deep into games. The 2022 National League Cy Young winner has already thrown 170 2/3 innings this year, which leads the big leagues by a large margin. If he continues at this pace, he’ll throw roughly 220 innings in 2026. Throwing more than 200 innings has become increasingly rare over the past few decades as teams lean more on their bullpens. Only three pitchers reached the mark last season — Logan Webb, Garrett Crochet and Cristopher Sanchez.Just 20 years ago in 2006, there were 45 pitchers who hit 200 innings. If Alcantara manages to make it to 220 this season, that will be most in the big leagues since — Sandy Alcantara. He threw 228 2/3 innings during 2022 when he won the Cy Young.Dodgers in the dumpsThe Los Angeles Dodgers are the two-time defending World Series champs and one of the favorites to win the title again this season. They sure aren’t playing like these days.Los Angeles is 5-11 in its past 16 games, having been swept by the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs and losing series to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers in that span. Since July 1, the Dodgers are 18-21. “I say this because it’s just been four or five, six weeks of below average production in our offense. It’s just the truth, and I think we have just haven’t played clean baseball for quite some time, and that speaks to the defense,” manager Dave Roberts said. The Dodgers have a chance to gain some momentum this week with three games against the Colorado Rockies and three more against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Rockies are in last place in the NL West while the Pirates have fallen to 61-65 after a promising start to the season.Trivia AnswerJose Fernandez (D-backs, 2026), Chase DeLauter (Guardians, 2026), Trevor Story (Rockies, 2016), J.P. He was 76.Marsh died Friday in Connecticut, his friend Jeffrey St. Clair, a co-editor of the online magazine Counterpunch, told The Associated Press. St. Clair said Marsh had been suffering from a degenerative brain disease for several years. Jim Rotolo, the SiriusXM radio host, announced Marsh’s death on his social media accounts.Springsteen paid tribute to Marsh in an Instagram post, writing that the loss had left the band “heartbroken.”“My great friend Dave, with his straight out of Detroit attitude, was a true Rock ‘n’ Roll lifer. (AP) — Thunderstorms, heavy rain and flash flooding continued to threaten a swath of the U.S. from the Midwest to the mid-Atlantic Monday, extending a deadly stretch of unsettled weather. The National Weather Service said repeated rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms would continue for one more day before a cold front sweeps the weather pattern off the East Coast on Tuesday. In the meantime, much of West Virginia, southeast Ohio and northeast Kentucky were under a flood watch through Monday evening, with high water lingering from previous storms increasing the possibility of flash flooding. In Indiana, where days of storms and flooding left at least seven people dead, floodwaters receded in Indianapolis’ White River and rains eased in other parts of the state Sunday. But a flood warning remained in effect Monday morning for part of Randolph County in east central Indiana, where thunderstorms had dropped between 1 and 2 inches of rain by 8 a.m. “While we have seen encouraging trends, the work is far from over,” said Jacob Spence, director of the Metropolitan Emergency Services Agency in Indianapolis, where city officials on Sunday launched a website to support affected residents.A 4-year-old boy, three men and three women were among those who had died since the storms that began Aug. 11, said Liz Woods, a spokesperson for the state Department of Homeland Security. Also, among the seven victims was a 31-year-old cyclist found dead early Sunday in a hole that opened up on a washed-out road in Henry County, east of Indianapolis. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMClemson head coach Dabo Swinney on Cade Klubnik’s New York Jets NFL debutDabo Swinney has spent years saying Cade Klubnik has the tools to succeed in the NFL. On Friday night, the former Clemson quarterback took an encouraging first step.Klubnik made his first professional start for the New York Jets in a preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, filling in for an injured Geno Smith. The fourth-round rookie completed 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards and helped New York score on both of his possessions.“I was definitely excited,” Klubnik said postgame. “I think the first thing that I kind of thought to myself was that not a lot was going to change. I knew Geno was only going to play maybe eight to 10 plays and I was ready to go in early after that.”His longest completion was a 21-yard contested pass to Garrett Wilson. New York’s second drive ended with a 31-yard Braelon Allen touchdown run that gave the Jets a 10-0 lead.Klubnik was already out of the game by the time Swinney was able to watch. The Tigers’ staff had been preparing for its first fall scrimmage, but Swinney still reached out to his former quarterback afterward.“By the time I got to the office, he was out but I texted back and forth with him last night and just proud of him,” Swinney said. “I mean, like I said, he’s going to be a great pro.”Swinney has consistently expressed that belief. After Klubnik’s final game at Clemson last December, he pointed to the quarterback’s upside beyond college.“He’s just now scratching what his true potential is going to be and I can’t wait to watch it,” Swinney said after the bowl game. “I think he’s incredibly gifted. He’s incredibly smart. He’s a leader and I love this kid.”Klubnik left Clemson after making 40 starts and posting a 26-14 record. He helped the Tigers win ACC championships in 2022 and 2024, earning MVP honors in both title games, and finished his career with 11,001 total yards.Four Clemson Tigers make college football top 100 list for 2026📸 Ken Ruinard / USA Today Co Inc SC, Ken Ruinard / USA Today Co Inc SC / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images https://t.co/h7cDD5tz1zpic.twitter.com/xhRUxC4eE2— Clemson Wire (@Clemson_Wire) August 17, 2026His first NFL start was brief, but Swinney believes it was only an early glimpse of what is ahead.“(Klubnik’s) gonna play a long time,” Swinney said on Saturday. “He’s a really, really talented quarterback and that’s why he got drafted and they’ve obviously seen that too right out of the gate. So, hopefully he stays healthy. If he does, he’s going to be one of those guys, you look up and he’s played quite a while.”Clemson now moves into a new era at quarterback, with Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds competing to start against LSU on Sept. 5.Contact us at @Clemson_Wire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Clemson Tigers news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Clemson Wire: Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney on Cade Klubnik’s New York Jets NFL debut0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAmy Hunt is a superstar – but here’s how Team GB’s sprint queen can get even fasterAmy Hunt’s expression was equal parts joy and amazement as she crossed the line for the last time at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, before holding up four fingers to the camera as the realisation of what she had achieved dawned on her. The 24-year-old made history as the first to win four golds in the 92-year history of the European Championships, completing the individual 100m and 200m double before winning both the women’s 4x100m relay and the experimental new mixed 4x100m relay. The latter two victories came alongside Dina Asher-Smith, newly crowned the most decorated athlete of all time at European level. The first two came over her, the baton (literally) passing from one British sprinting great to another who it is hoped will be the next. Hunt made no secret of her drive to win that unprecedented set of four golds, freely saying “I’m looking to be iconic” before her bid for history. She is a charismatic and entertaining personality, a sprinter with a tendency towards the showmanlike, roaring “Are you not entertained?” in glee as she sealed the individual sprint double. That showmanship is offset by a fierce work ethic, evident in her first-class degree from Cambridge as much as in her work on the track. She said this week: “I’m just so proud of myself and the way I’ve handled this week – the emotions, the recovery and being strict and staying disciplined after all the highs. I’ve stayed true to myself and true to the job I came out here to do.”She said “no champagne until Sunday” after ticking off two of her four races, but after some time to celebrate the scale of her achievements, attention will soon turn to the future. So what next for the new face of British sprinting? The scariest thing for her rivals is how much room there still is for her to improve, most notably in her start. At nearly 6ft tall, she is never the quickest off the blocks, and was seventh of eight finalists by the 10m mark of the 100m final. She has previously detailed a “love-hate relationship” with the 60m, her worst of the three sprint disciplines, and the one most reliant on an excellent start. It is her finishing speed which is her biggest strength, alongside a total, unshakeable self-confidence in her own ability, which has seen her thrive on the biggest stages. She told BBC Sport she felt her 100m victory this week was “preordained”: “It was in the air and I knew it was going to happen, regardless of whatever anyone else was doing.” Hunt has entered major races somewhat under the radar – notably at the world championships last year, when she won silver in Tokyo – and as the favourite in every race this week. She has shown that the weight of expectation does not faze her. Hunt won two relay golds alongside Dina Asher-Smith and beat the British sprint icon in the two individual events (Reuters)She has never hidden her ambition, telling The Independent and other media before this year’s World Indoor Championships of her desire to beat the likes of double world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Olympic champion Julien Alfred: “It’s not even delusional, because you can’t think it’s delusional; you have to fully, wholeheartedly, with your whole body and soul and mind, believe that you are the best and you’re going to beat everyone.”She may have that belief, but there is significant work to do in translating her continental prowess into becoming a serial threat at world and Olympic level. Over the course of this year so far, she is 14th-fastest in the world over 200m and 25th-fastest over 100m, while health issues have prevented her from reaching her full potential over the longer distance this season. After the 200m race at the London Diamond League, she was dispatched to the medical tent feeling faint, with tests ultimately revealing low blood pressure to be the cause. It has meant that this year she has focused on speed work but not been able to commit so much to endurance efforts, leaving her with room to develop in the 200m in the future. But she has reaped the rewards of that speed work, lowering her 60m personal best to 7.04s this year, and going under 11 seconds for the first time in the 100m.GB won the new mixed 4x100m relay in a European record time (Reuters)Hunt has stressed her admiration for the likes of American great Allyson Felix, the most decorated athlete of all time at world championship level and a multiple world and Olympic medallist in each of the 200m, 400m and 4x100m relay. “I really love being such a versatile sprinter. All of the sprinting greats, Usain [Bolt], Allyson [Felix], Dafne [Schippers], Tori Bowie, everyone who is truly the best at these events, do all of them,” she said earlier this year. She has said she “would love to step up to the 400m”, like Felix, with her top-end speed making that a frightening prospect, while the additional strength involved in that race would give her an extra edge over the shorter distances. Her next major targets will be the world championships in Beijing next year, themselves a natural stepping stone to the ultimate goal: the Olympics in 2028. If the 400m is in her sights before the next Olympic Games, the world indoor championships in Bhubaneswar, India, a couple of months before LA, would be the ideal place to test the waters, in the absence of a 100m or 200m race on the short indoor track. Or, if her focus is on an Olympic sprint double, as seems more likely, the world indoors would be the last chance to fine-tune her 60m – and focus on that all-important start out of the blocks – in a race setting, while giving her the chance to settle some unfinished business, having missed out on the final this year by two-hundredths of a second.Zharnel Hughes hails four-time gold medallist Amy Hunt (Reuters)Success over every distance will go some way to securing a glittering legacy, a concept she is preoccupied with. Having been one of relatively few top athletes to prioritise the Commonwealth Games last month, she explained her reasoning as: “I don’t want to go on my Wikipedia page in 30 years’ time and just see one or two medals. I want to see lists and lists of medals.” She was complimentary about teammate and rival, “the GOAT” Asher-Smith, whose longevity has been an inspiration to many British sprinters, with the 30-year-old still winning international medals 13 years after her senior debut. But just as she overhauled her in the 200m, the fiercely competitive Hunt will try to overhaul her over the course of her career. Asher-Smith still holds the national record over all three sprint distances, as well as a clear superiority in international medals, and the passing of the baton is not quite complete. Four medals in Birmingham this week will do nicely; now Hunt, no stranger to hard work, will get stuck into her next chapter.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNew Balance and São Paulo FC unveil women's third kit, first everNew Balance and São Paulo FC unveil women's third kit, first everInspired by the strength and resilience of the lotus flower, the new kit celebrates the athletes’ leading role and marks another groundbreaking chapter in the partnership between New Balance and the clubNew Balance and São Paulo Futebol Clube unveiled this Monday (17) the new third kit for the women’s team for the 2026 season. For the first time in its history, the club will have an exclusive third kit for the women’s team, in a launch that reinforces the players’ prominence and marks another exclusive project by New Balance with São Paulo. The new kit is part of the club’s 2026 collection, which begins the countdown to the Tricolor’s centenary and celebrates the so-called Tricolor DNA, a concept associated with the pioneering spirit and forward-thinking approach that are part of São Paulo’s history. For the women’s third shirt, New Balance sought to translate these elements through its own visual language, drawing inspiration from the lotus flower, a symbol of strength, resilience, and the ability to bloom even in the most challenging conditions. The choice of the lotus flower is reflected both in the campaign’s narrative and in the kit’s visual design. In a lilac tone, the shirt features floral elements applied as a watermark throughout the piece. A subtle gradient at the bottom adds depth to the look and highlights the presence of these graphics in a refined way that is fully integrated into the fabric. The result is a piece that combines a contemporary aesthetic with symbols that reinforce the identity of the women’s team. Details include the São Paulo crest in 3D TPU with a glossy finish, featuring the inscription Tricolor DNA inside, as well as the New Balance logo, also in 3D TPU. The collar, made with layered fabric and ribbing, and the cuff in contrasting fabric complete the design. Made from 100% recycled polyester, the new kit is designed for comfort and performance, using breathable fabrics with NB Dry technology on the front and sleeves, helping absorb and quickly evaporate sweat during sports activities.Exclusive elements reinforce the collection’s concept. The piece features the commemorative Lotus Flower seal and embroidery with the phrase We Are Lotus, We Are Fight, a message that sums up the narrative developed for the campaign and the strength represented by the players. The launch campaign featured goalkeeper Carlinha, center-back Tayla, midfielder and number 10 Camilinha, and forward Crivelari. The setting was carefully designed to bring the visual language of the lotus flower into the world of the athletes and football, reinforcing the connection between strength, resilience, and female empowerment. We are lotus, we are fightThe campaign narrative is based on the idea that the lotus flower is born amid adversity and blooms toward the light. In football, the metaphor connects to the players’ journey and the conquest of new spaces on and off the pitch. From this concept, the campaign presents the shirt as a symbol of a team that finds in struggle and overcoming challenges the strength to keep moving forward. “Each petal that opens to the sun is a victory achieved and a space beyond the stands conquered by us. We are lotus, we are fight,” says one excerpt from the video featuring the players. For New Balance, the development of the new kit also represents the continuation of a process of research and deeper study of the history of São Paulo Futebol Clube, balancing historical references with contemporary elements.“Our work is always to seek that balance between the club’s victorious past, with its rich history full of pioneering moments, and a contemporary interpretation that allows us to bring new meanings to each piece. The women’s third shirt comes precisely from that perspective: it is a groundbreaking product for the club, designed exclusively for the women players, and it also represents a new chapter in this story as it moves toward its centenary,” says Leandro Moraes, New Balance marketing director. For São Paulo Futebol Clube, the launch represents a historic moment for the sport. In addition to highlighting the women’s squad, the creation of an exclusive third shirt reinforces the importance women’s football holds in shaping the club’s present and future. The new women’s third shirt from São Paulo Futebol Clube will be available starting this Monday, August 17, at 10 a.m., at SAO Store and New Balance, both in physical stores and online. Wholesale sales, in physical and online channels, begin on Wednesday, August 19.This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. THEONION.COMCrying Newborn Has No Idea How Much Worse It GetsMEDFORD, OR—Saying the infant really ought to save her tears for the real shit that’s headed her way, sources familiar with crying newborn Sophia Whitfield confirmed Monday that she had no idea how much worse it was going to get. Observers told reporters the shrieking baby was clearly oblivious to the fact that any distress she experienced in exiting her mother’s womb would pale in comparison to the fucking decades of tedium, misfortune, and humiliation yet to come. According to witnesses, the clueless Whitfield should be crying tears of goddamn joy, because she was at the absolute pinnacle of her life, completely unaware of the bullying she would experience in school, the loveless marriage that would go 20 years too long, or the career ambitions that would be constantly thwarted, not to mention a genetic predisposition to Parkinson’s that could rob her of her mobility at any moment. At press time, sources reported that the newborn was at last comfortably napping in a bassinet, not realizing she would soon be crying in her sleep too. (AP Photo)2026-08-17T14:35:55Z A Russian court on Monday convicted a prominent opposition politician for speaking out against the war in Ukraine and sentenced him to 11 years and one month in prison in the latest crackdown leading up to next month’s parliamentary election. The verdict against Lev Shlosberg, a senior member of the Yabloko party, was another step by the Kremlin to stifle dissent since Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2022. Yabloko is the only official political party overtly opposing the war.Shlosberg, 63, is Yabloko’s deputy chairman and served in the regional legislature of Pskov from 2016-21. He stood trial in the city of Pskov, some 600 kilometers (370 miles) northwest of Moscow, on charges of “discrediting” and spreading “false information” about the Russian military. The charges stemmed from a debate in which he called for ending the war and from posting on his Telegram channel a British tabloid front page featuring an image of a bloodied woman next to one of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the headline: “Her blood ... his hands.” Shlosberg has rejected the charges as unfounded. It was the second trial for Shlosberg in the last two years. He has also been designated a “foreign agent,” a label that carries strong pejorative connotations in Russia and brings additional government scrutiny. He was convicted of violating the foreign agent regulations. In December 2025, he was placed in pre-trial detention on the new charges and has been held behind bars ever since. In his final statement to the court Friday, Shlosberg said that for 30 years, Russia has traveled “a path from hopes for freedom to the almost complete destruction of human and civil rights and freedoms.” Read More He said the war in Ukraine has “changed the lives of every Russian citizen without exception,” and predicted that once its true death toll becomes known, “the entire country will shudder.”Following the verdict, the Yabloko party said Shlosberg received the “brutal sentence” for “love of the Motherland and calls for a ceasefire.” In a statement on Telegram, the party said Shlosberg will appeal the verdict. Amnesty International denounced the verdict against Shlosberg. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Since her arrival as the number one overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, the league has shattered its old in-game attendance and television ratings records, which in turn have paved the way for a transformational new collective bargaining agreement for the league and rapid franchise expansion. However, it’s also true that the league has been on an upward trajectory for some time now, even if Clark did help it enter a new stratosphere. Just don’t tell that to Outkick’s Dan Dakich.“Caitlin Clark came along, and once Caitlin Clark came along, you became a real league,” Dakich said in a video on social media, addressing Fever legend Tamika Catchings.”“Because of Caitlin Clark, you became a real league.”@dandakich unloads on the WNBA for refusing to embrace the Fever superstar who brought the league unprecedented attention. pic.twitter.com/U7zbAYlCuX— Don’t @ Me (@DontAtMeDD) August 14, 2026“But now you got big eyeballs and you don’t want the big eyeballs,” he continued. “Where were you 30, 20, 10, five years ago? Not watching. But guess what? Because of Caitlin Clark, you became a real league.“And guess what? Now people are watching. And guess what? You and your friends have been exposed as racist, sexist, and frankly, full of crap. You should have stayed as a minor league. You should have never drafted Caitlin Clark. You should have told us Juju Watkins is the next great thing. Or you should have told us Paige Beckers is the next great thing. And you know what we’d have done? We’d have kept not watching. But all of a sudden, you got one of us. You got a girl that just busted her *ss to play basketball. You got a heterosexual white girl that just busted her ass to play basketball and is better than anybody. And more importantly, is different. She’s relatable. Kinda cute. She shoots from areas people have never seen. She passes the basketball. She looks like Pete Maravich playing, literally and physically, out there. So now we’re paying attention.”On Sunday, Dakich doubled down.“Before Clark? Nothing, nada, zip, zilch, and it makes racists crazy,” he posted on X.What Dakich and others who attempt to disparage the WNBA realize is that just because they weren’t interested in women’s sports doesn’t mean nobody was. Both men and women have been watching women’s sports, and that’s a trend that is only going to continue. The post ‘It makes racists crazy’: Analyst insists that WNBA is only successful because of ‘kinda cute’ Caitlin Clark appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

WWW.404MEDIA.CO‘Show How 3M Is 0% at Fault:’ Expert Witness Used ChatGPT to Write Report Defending Company in Deadly Explosion LawsuitAn expert witness testifying in a lawsuit about liability for a Houston explosion that killed three people and destroyed roughly 200 homes used ChatGPT to write significant portions of his “expert report.” The man, who was hired by the industrial product conglomerate 3M, exposed his AI prompts publicly. They showed that he asked ChatGPT to help him “create an exceptional expert witness report defending the standard of care at 3M,” and that the report should “show how 3M is 0% at fault for the explosion at Watson Grinding.”The incident shows that artificial intelligence has made its way into courtrooms not just in AI-generated legal briefings, hallucinated cases, and adversarial “prompt injections,” but in expert witness testimonies. Court transcripts, deposition documents, and discovery records shared with 404 Media show extensive AI use in an extremely high profile case, where multiple people died and hundreds of millions of dollars in total liability are at stake in ongoing litigation about the explosion. The case also shows that the specific prompts used to create this type of expert testimony can be discoverable during a case, and that those prompts can be quite embarrassing. (Prompts provided in the case are here). The case is one of several about liability for a 2020 explosion at Watson Grinding, a manufacturing facility in Houston that was caused by a “degraded and poorly crimped rubber welding hose,” which leaked a flammable gas that eventually exploded in the facility, according to the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. Dozens of homeowners have sued by 3M and Watson Grinding; the plaintiffs alleged that 3M didn’t properly service the facility’s gas detection system and made other errors that contributed to the explosion. As part of the case, 3M hired a man named Josh Autenrieth of Knighthawk Engineering to prepare an “expert report” about the explosion. During discovery in the case, Will Moye, one of the plaintiffs’ attorneys, found a five-page document called “Citation Overlay,” which appeared to have been generated by AI. Moye recognized the Citation Overlay document as being from ChatGPT, and demanded all of the prompts Autenrieth used from 3M’s lawyers. The deposition was paused for three hours while they were gathered, and Moye was given 350 pages of ChatGPT conversations that Autenrieth had when creating the report. Those documents included ChatGPT’s public links to Autenrieth’s full conversations. Court transcripts suggest that 3M paid Knighthawk Engineering roughly $90,000 for its analysis, and a filing by 3M shows that Autenrieth’s rate was $475 per hour. From the cover page of the reportThe conversations show much of Autenrieth’s process from start to finish, which included telling ChatGPT that he was “being retained as a professional expert witness by 3M in defense of them in their lawsuits and other legal proceedings behind the January 2020 explosion at Watson Grinding.” He told ChatGPT that he needed “to create an expert witness report to defend 3M’s standard of care for their work,” and that, specifically, it needed “to counter the defense witness [sic] outlandish and false claims particularly about working on equipment you are not trained to and without the right permitting.” He asked ChatGPT to help him find violations of various working standards, then attached hundreds of court records. Autenrieth then asked ChatGPT to read all of the attached records and to defend 3M, “illustrating the lack of [Process and Safety Management] and safety by Watson Grinding, defeating [the defense witness’] comments […] and show how 3M is 0% at fault for the explosion at Watson Grinding and how my background and experience is well suited to render this professional opinion.” ChatGPT created a roughly 30-page report that included the line “From a technical and standard-of-care standpoint, 3M is 0% responsible for the January 24, 2020 explosion.” This line did not make it into the final report filed with the court, because when Autenrieth later asked ChatGPT to “review this as the opposing council,” ChatGPT determined that writing “‘0% responsible’ is an easy target” for a lawyer to poke holes in, and is one of several "phrases [that] let opposing counsel paint you as an advocate rather than an expert."In another chat, Autenrieth uploaded an image of a gas detector and asked ChatGPT “what am I looking at?,” and asked “what are model names of industrial gas detectors.” Moye said that the gas detector in question is “the subject of the whole case.” Autenrieth used ChatGPT to help him make various edits to the report it had generated, and repeatedly uploaded different versions of the report, getting revisions from the tool, then uploading new versions of the report (in some of the chats he changed the subject from his expert witness testimony to having ChatGPT generate t-shirt images). He also asked ChatGPT to “grade” his report (it got a 97/100), and “what are the 5 main things in my report the prosecution could attack and how do I defend them?” He then asked ChatGPT if his resume was sufficient to be an expert witness; “will prosecution go after me for never having been [an expert witness] before based on wording and how do I defend that?” The report that Autenrieth submitted to the court is structured the same as the initial output given by ChatGPT and large swaths of it are identical to what ChatGPT first outputted and the revisions that it recommended in Autenrieth’s subsequent chats.“This expert relied on AI not as an assistive device, but exclusively relied on ChatGPT to form his opinions and write his report,” Moye told 404 Media in a phone interview. “He acknowledged [at trial] the prompts he put in were biased toward 3M to help 3M win the case […] it’s really egregious.” Moye added that many of the prompts took place the night before Autenrieth was deposed as an expert witness. “They hired him for the sole purpose of changing the outcome of the case. They hired him and he used ChatGPT to write these reports, so really, ChatGPT was the expert in the case. There’s just no question about that.”Moye told 404 Media that 3M eventually tried to get Autenrieth disqualified from the trial, but that after he learned Autenrieth extensively used AI to generate his report, he took the somewhat unusual step of calling the other side’s expert witness as his own witness. “I said, I’m calling you to trial because I need a jury to hear from you because this is bad, bad stuff. And that’s exactly what I did,” Moye said.In trial transcripts, Autenrieth admits to using ChatGPT, but said repeatedly that he is an expert in gas detection: “I've got a body of work and 20-plus years of experience in the industry.” He did not explain why he used ChatGPT, but said “my opinions were put in there, and AI helped me to draft a straw man to build off of,” and added “I put information and opinions in up front before it ever generated […] if the output wasn't of my opinion or what I agreed to, I did alter it.” In the examination at trial, Moye and Autenrieth agree that the submitted report is “90 to 85 percent ChatGPT.” Autenrieth also said that he prompted ChatGPT about the case several times while “sitting in traffic” to “jog my memory” about several different manufacturers of gas detectors. Beyond this being a highly interesting case on its own merits, it shows that ChatGPT transcripts can be obtained by opposing lawyers in discovery or during depositions. Moye said “every lawyer needs to make sure their own experts aren’t generating work product in a way that’s insincere, and then knowing you can subpoena the prompts [...] I’ve got lawyers all over the place saying, 1) ‘Holy shit, man. How did you get the prompts?,’ and 2) ‘How many cases do I have where this is happening to us?’”Autenrieth is not the first expert caught using AI during a trial, though most known cases have been international, according to a database of cases in which AI was used to create evidence. In a case in France, a lawyer used AI to make an argument about rainwater patterns in a flooding dispute; that evidence was thrown out. In Canada, AI was used to generate opinions about whether specific types of plants caused a bug infestation at an apartment complex. The judge in that case wrote “I place no weight on the [AI evidence]. Expert evidence must come from a known individual with known qualifications who has specific knowledge about the issue at hand.” The jury in the 3M case awarded more than $61 million to the plaintiffs, apportioning 30 percent of the responsibility to 3M and 70 percent to Watson Grinding. Previous decisions awarded $118 million and 38 million to victims of the blast, and there are several more upcoming cases.Knighthawk Engineering, Autenrieth, and 3M did not respond to a request for comment0 Reacties 0 aandelen 21 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLSU football defense continues to chase interceptions in fall campDefensive coordinator Blake Baker transformed LSU football's defense from a national bottom-feeder into one of the best units in the SEC. One metric that jumped significantly year over year was interceptions, up from six in 2024 to 17 in 2025."I think it's a combination of guys being more in tune to exactly what the scheme is," Baker said. "Sometimes it comes down to just better players, to be honest with you."Baker hopes for a similar jump in 2026 and said the team is running pick six drills during fall camp. LSU needs to replace three interceptions apiece from Harold Perkins and A.J. Haulcy. Both departed for the NFL after last season, as did first-rounder Mansoor Delane. But the Tigers get DJ Pickett, Dashawn Spears and Tamarcus Cooley back, all of whom came away with at least two picks in 2025. They also add transfer Ty Benefield, who made two interceptions each of the last two years. Baker said the Tigers have the physical tools to compete for balls in the air. "We have great length in the back end," Baker said. "All those guys have extremely good ball skills and when you look back on the tape in a self- scout standpoint, I think we had four interceptions where we were tackled by a quarterback last year, so it's a point of emphasis." SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat if the Cardinals added yellow to their team colors?(Photo by Ric Tapia/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Arizona Cardinals began during the early years of the game of American Football, which was coming into existence. This new sport sprang up from the sport of rugby. And rugby came from soccer, which is officially called “football” on a global scale. Teams back then didn’t have home and away jerseys. They owned one set that followed the origins of baseball. In those days, baseball teams all had basically the same uniforms, so they had different colored socks. That is why the “Cincinnati Red Stockings” (Reds), “Chicago White Stockings” (White Sox), and “Boston Red Stockings” (Red Sox) still have this history to their franchise team names.RELATED: CARDINALS ALMOST RELOCATED TO EVANSTON, ILLINOIS?Stockings were used instead of traditional socks because they could travel from the cleat/shoes all the way to just below the knee. This long area covered the entire shin and gave a good glimpse of the color.Almost every professional sports team has made some sort of change, whether that’s in a team name, colors, team logos, uniforms, city, stadium, owners, or franchise letter font. The “New York Jets” began as “The Titans of New York,” which sported uniforms of blue and yellow with a speck of white. When the Titans became the Jets, the colors changed to green and white. In 1990, the Jets added black as an accent shade, and then in 2019, black became a featured color. They moved from the Polo Grounds to Shea Stadium to Giants Stadium in New Jersey for home games. So, they changed their team’s name, colors, owner, lettering, logos, and even moved out of the State of New York. From Chicago to St. LouisSince the Cardinals began back in the day, their uniform has consisted of a lot of black and brown pieces when they entered the “American Professional Football Association” (APRA) in the maiden season of 1920. The APRA was renamed the National Football League (NFL) two years later. The Cardinals were named the “Racine Cardinals” as a charter member because they played their home games on Racine Street in the South Side of Chicago. In 1922, the team became the “Chicago Cardinals” because another club labeled the “Racine Legion” joined the NFL. This club was headquartered in Racine, Wisconsin. To avoid confusion, the Cardinals took on the Chicago description. The Racine Cardinals were dark red and tan, with a hint of white. They kept these colors until 1931. In 1932, the franchise was bought by Charlie “Blue shirt” Bidwill from Dr. David Jones. The team added blue jerseys but kept the dark red socks. These blue jerseys were only worn for two games, as both teams also had red uniforms.Except for 1937 and 1949, the team had a blue set of jerseys all the way through 1955. In 1956, the blue version was gone. Players wore either red or white helmets all the way through the 1958 season, and from then on, white was the only hat utilized until a black helmet was available beginning in 2022. A sand helmet was used during the 2025 season. The official team colors are cardinal red (Pantone 194 CP), white, process black (Pantone Process Black C), and silver, which are listed, although it’s grayer. On the official website, it is named “Grey” with the exact tint as “Pantone: 3-C.”Pantone.com describes this color as “cool gray.” So, the gray spelling is listed differently, plus the exact color. Gray is not silver. Pantone lists eight shades of black. If you are a woman or a girl dad, you know there are at least 12 shades of black. Just sayin’.The origins of the team’s red color came in 1901 when the team’s owner, Chris O’Brien, purchased used uniforms of the University of Chicago, whose team name was “the Maroons.” O’Brien famously declared the secondhand uniforms were not maroon, but “cardinal red” because of the fading.Sunlight fades any red or purple version earlier than any other colors. So, the uniforms in new condition were maroon, and now the washed-out version with mended rips, tears, and holes repaired in all their glory were faded maroon. The color black has always been used in the cardinal head logo and was the only place it was shown or used. But in 1964, the white jerseys displayed a thin black stripe on the sleeves as this combination: thin black, thin white, large red, thin white, thin black, thin white, large red, thin white, thin black. There were two sets of pants, both white. One had two thin red stripes for the red jerseys, and with the white jerseys, it was a larger red stripe sandwiched by two thin white stripes, then two outer black stripes to match one-half of the sleeve striping. By 1967, the white pants with the red/white/black combination were worn with every uniform. This striping was a St. Louis Cardinals mainstay. In the preseasons of 1974, 1975, and 1978, the home and away jersey numbers were outlined in black and then became a standard on the white jerseys only. In 1988, a black belt was offered during the franchise’s first season in Phoenix. But in 2005, black appeared as an accent color in these specific areas: 1) numeral outlines on front, back and TV digits, 2) a thin line coming from the jersey sides and going up to the solid red shoulder pad areas on both the front and back of the jerseys, 3) a thin stripe to outline the jersey collar, plus 4), as an outline with the pants striping. In 2010, the first solid black jersey was introduced with solid black socks. For the 2017 season, black pants with minimal red striping and solid black socks were combined with a new black jersey version with red numerals instead of white. With the 2022 season, a black helmet arrived. Now, the team was officially cardinal red, white, and black.Which brings us to the color yellowGoing into the 1960s, many pro football clubs were now adding logos to helmets after the Los Angeles Rams began this tradition in 1948 with hand-painted ram horns. For the 1960 season, the Cardinals added a cardinal bird head, outlined in black with black interior features, and a solid yellow beak. This was the first time that yellow appeared on a Cardinals uniform. The 1984 uniform featured a 25th Anniversary patch, which had the standard cardinal head logo with the yellow beak, so yellow was seen in just one spot on the uniform and two places on the helmets. In 1989, the team’s second season in the desert, the “Phoenix Cardinals” had the state flag on the sleeve of just the white jersey. Which, of course, comprised red, white, blue, and yellow. The flag in this size continued until the 1995 season. Plus, along with another cardinal bird head logo was situated right above the flag. This meant on every white uniform, six areas displayed yellow. This uniform continued until 1995.The Cardinals again changed their name, this time to the “Arizona Cardinals” in 1994. Beginning in 1996 until 2004, the flag on the sleeves was reduced in size, and the cardinal head logo disappeared from the sleeves but remained on each side of the helmets. This style was used for the white jersey only. The 1998 uniform featured a “100th Anniversary” patch, which had the standard cardinal head logo, plus a full cardinal bird, which also had a solid yellow beak. Which means this special white uniform had six spots with yellow, while the red jersey version had four. The 2005 white jersey began a new trend and continued until 2022. The cardinal head logo was removed from the sleeves, and a mini cardinal head logo was inserted above the player’s nameplate. So, every white jersey used yellow in three places, while the red version had just the two on the helmet sides. In 2006, both white and red jerseys sported a patch that stated, “Inaugural Season – 2006 Cardinals Stadium. The upper wording was black lettering on a solid yellow background. With the 2012 red and white jerseys, a Hall of Fame patch was worn that had a solid goldish yellow wide stripe around the entire logo.Starting in 2023, the white version still has the standard cardinal bird logo above the player nameplate, but the red and black jerseys are replaced with either a white or red cardinal head logo. The 2025 “Rivalries Sand Uniform” has the return of the Arizona state flag on the sleeves, while the cardinal bird head uses orange instead of yellow.Since 1960, yellow has been on every Cardinals uniform in one form or another. Which brings us to the color grayThe color gray first appeared in 1936. Solid gray pants were worn for home and away combinations. No other pants color was used this year. The Cardinals featured red and blue uniforms, but no white jerseys. Red socks with several white stripes were featured with both unies. And then, poof! The gray pants were gone. The striped socks returned, but it was the only season the Cardinals wore solid gray pants. The year before, in 1935, it was tan pants, which were the manufacturer’s color choice for leather pants and worn by every team.Beginning in 2023, the Cardinals’ white jersey has a solid gray stripe with the words “Cardinals” inside the stripe located on the sleeve. It is encased by two white stripes, which are actually portions of the uniform, and then two thin red stripes. The black jersey has the same design on the sleeves with the thick gray stripe. The red jersey is devoid of this. It’s the same uniform in 2024 and 2025, and presumed that the 2026 version is also identical. Both the black and white pants have a larger gray stripe in between the pants’ colors and encased with two red outer stripes. Again, the red pants are devoid of any striping.Every five years, teams can rework new designs. This was that year.Except for the standard manufacturer’s gray facemask, that is all the gray that the Cardinals have ever used. One year for pants, and going into the fourth year of a solid gray stripe on jersey sleeves, plus down the pants leg on two of three uniform sets. The question has to be: Why is gray considered a team color? Why isn’t yellow?Yellow streakWatching this year’s World Cup, when Brazil was playing, the stadium stands were a sea of yellow shirts and jerseys. Nobody could ignore their fans. Yellow is considered a safety color. That is why the U.S. Transportation Department made yellow their warning street signs for curves ahead, construction work, dead ends, merge lanes, railroad and deer crossings, and speed bumps. It is why school buses are yellow, because it is seen from a long distance. Yellow and black are considered the two most contrasting colors. Of course, red is used for safety as well, with fire and law enforcement, stop signs, traffic, and tail lights, and full attention. In the NFL, yellow is used by the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Los Angeles Chargers. So, it’s not an overused color.Think about this combo: Red, black, and yellow. The premise is to use red and black as the primary colors (with the largest amount of red), with a representation of yellow included, and white as an accent on the red and black uniforms. No team in the league has this color combination. It would bring a dull and lifeless combination and make it pop. It’s not Arena League, as red and black are the main colors. The yellow complements both.As a Cardinals fan, you may make a statement about tradition, an institution, and simplicity. Well, the franchise that has had traditional red and white uniforms since 1937 has won a grand total of two championship banners. And one of those two was actually won by another team and then forwarded to the Cardinals.Maybe something different is in store. The color yellow has been there all this time. Give it a microphone and let’s hear it sing. Countries that use this color combination are Germany, Belgium, Angola, East Timor, and Uganda. The evidence is that the franchise has already been using yellow for 66 years. In some seasons, the team has six yellow places on each uniform. Others, just four. If we did the research, it would divulge hundreds of cases of using yellow since 1960.All that would happen is that the color would be named an official color. Then, use it.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJohn Harbaugh frustrated by hit that led to Jaxson Dart concussion checkThe hits New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart took as a rookie might still be haunting him, but not necessarily because any physical effects have lingered. After Dart's latest trip to the blue medical tent for a sideline evaluation on Saturday, Aug. 15, he said he was "puzzled" by how frequently he ends up there. Head coach John Harbaugh told reporters in a virtual press conference on Aug. 16 that he believes Dart's "history" of concussion checks is the reason he ends up in the medical tent so often."I'm sure it's frustrating," Harbaugh said. "I guess he maybe got the wind knocked out of him a little bit, but I’m not going to be critical of the league or whoever’s doing that upstairs. They do their job and they want to protect the players."I'm sure history or whatever they might remember, maybe that comes into play. I don't know if there is a similar situation, another quarterback would have been called in the tent or not. There's no way for us to know that. So, nothing we can worry about."Dart was flagged five times for medical evaluations in his rookie season last year. He was diagnosed with a concussion in a Week 10 game against the Chicago Bears and ended up missing two games.JAXSON DART: Giants QB gets another concussion check in preseason openerMore recently, the Giants' second-year quarterback was called into the blue medical tent after taking a hard hit on a sack during New York's preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 15. Safety Jay Ward ran past running back Tyrone Tracy's block attempt and laid out Dart with a big hit in the backfield. After a brief evaluation in the tent, Dart returned to the game and threw a touchdown pass."I really respect the rules, and the thought behind, you know, the NFL has of keeping players healthy and reviewing things," Dart said after the game. "But at the same time, I'm still puzzled by just feeling like every time that I get hit, you know, I just find my way in there."New York reportedly has put an extra emphasis on having Dart protect himself from big hits during training camp practices this summer. According to multiple reports from training camp practices, teammates and coaches celebrated when Dart slid or ran out of bounds instead of taking on hits as a rusher. But in the Giants' first preseason game, the big hit he took was mostly out of his control. The protection broke down in front of Dart, and Harbaugh expressed his frustration at the miscue that led to sack."We'll just try to do a better job of protecting him," he said on Aug. 16. "There's no way he should have been hit there. I mean, it just shouldn't have happened. That was a basic protection. Should have been protected and we expect in that situation to be protected in the future."The Giants play their second preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 22, against the Miami Dolphins. New York has not yet announced whether it will play its starters in the second game as well. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: John Harbaugh frustrated by hit that led to Jaxson Dart concussion check0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGolden State Schedule: Warriors to meet Grizzlies in home openerAfter starting the season on the road against Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers, the Golden State Warriors will have to wait to return home for their home opener in the Bay Area. In their second game of the 2026-27 slate, the Warriors will open the doors of Chase Center for the first time against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, Oct. 23 in San Francisco. While Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson have headlined Golden State's matchups with Memphis in the past, the 2026-27 home opener will give the Warriors their first chance at a new-look Grizzlies rotation that is littered with young talent, including the No. 3 overall pick from the 2026 NBA draft. Cam Boozer will lead a Grizzlies youth movement alongside Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells. Since Chase Center opened its doors in 2019, the Warriors have struggled in home openers, posting a 2-5 record in seven seasons in San Francisco. However, the Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak in home openers last year when Steph Curry dropped 42 points in an overtime win over the Nuggets. The Warriors won all three contests against the Grizzlies last season, including a 17-point comeback led by Pat Spencer. Steph Curry only played in one of the three games against the Grizzlies last season. Golden State's home opener will mark their first back-to-back of the season, with a game against Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks and the Suns the very next day in Arizona. The Warriors will only play two games at home in San Francisco in October. However, November starts with a lengthy homestand at Chase Center. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! And don’t tell me to check out a different book, because I’ve already read every other one: Dracula, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Famesick, all of them. I need Lonesome Dove, and I need it today. I’ll even take the large-print copy for old people if necessary.” At press time, sources confirmed Brunson was attempting to intimidate the librarian by quietly dribbling a basketball beside the returns bin. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Bemidji's mountain bike team created a tight-knit community in niche, challenging sportAug. 17—BEMIDJI — For Bemidji High School seniors Liam Larson and Ben Lindgren, telling their classmates about their fall sport of choice is all too predictable. They're usually met with a look of puzzlement, with the eventual realization of, "Bemidji has a mountain bike team?"It's true, Bemidji has had a mountain bike team for just about a decade. Composed of students from Bemidji Middle and High School, it's still relatively new, and it's definitely niche in the landscape of high school sports. They compete in the Minnesota Cycling Association instead of the Minnesota State High School LeagueBut for those who love it, their passion is shown openly."It's always so much fun," Larson said. "Sometimes we'll just hang out after practice and go swimming or something, since it's such a small community and a small, tight-knit group of people. But yeah, it's always a blast."The passion for mountain biking was shown on a humid Saturday morning on July 25 for the Lumberjack Singletrack Fundraiser Ride/Race at Movil Maze Recreation Area. The fundraiser helps the team's expenses when it comes to travel and equipment.Head coach Mark Larson has been at the helm since the team's inception. Whether it's recruiting new bikers, competing against an ever-growing list of sports and activities available to students or the expense of buying a competition-level mountain bike, leading a mountain biking team has its challenges. Then there's the problem that almost all Bemidji teams face: travel. A majority of the state's teams come from the Twin Cities area. The closest race can be a three-plus-hour drive or more. For all of its obstacles, the love that students, coaches and volunteers have for mountain biking has pushed them through."It's a really positive team," Coach Larson said. "And the kids are just getting out and riding. And those that want to compete can compete; those that just want to get out, get on bikes and enjoy some outside time are able to do that too."Liam Larson was seemingly born to mountain bike."I've been biking since I was in diapers," he said. "I (saw) other people do it; it looks cool. (Then there was) the process of getting with your buddies around the neighborhood, building bad jumps, having fun. Then, naturally, it kind of evolves into just biking on grass. Then you see people bike on the trails and you want to do that too."With his dad Mark as the head coach, he naturally joined the team as soon as he could in sixth grade. Since then, he's felt right at home."It's a little like a small community," Larson said of the team. "I mean, we've been riding with each other since we were super young."Making friendships is easy to do on race weekends, where Larson spends a lot of time with his teammates. To get to a typical competition, the team piles into a 15-passenger van and camps out Friday night. They then do a pre-ride of the course, making note of the turns and familiarizing themselves with the layout. Saturdays are race days for the middle schoolers. High schoolers normally race on Sundays. Not all members of the team have to participate in race weekends. Some just participate in practices, held two days a week at Mowl Maze Recreation Area. One practice is dedicated to technique, taking the course slower and improving on breaking and the corners. The other practice is dedicated to intervals, improving and working on endurance."A lot of people here (Nordic) ski, too," Lindgren said. "Nordic skiing and mountain bike kind of go hand in hand."Mountain biking is unique in that most of the teams don't have a home race. Rather, all teams in the state travel to the same track to compete. With six race weekends, including the state championship, locations range from Rochester to Alexandria. As expected, the mountain bike team has gone through a host of challenges since its inception. But in his tenure as head coach, Larson has come up with a list of solutions.First, there was the multi-sport problem. Mountain biking is smack dab in the middle of a loaded fall sports season. At BHS, there are three sports for boys to choose from (football, soccer and cross country) and five for the girls (soccer, cross country, tennis, volleyball and swim and dive). In case other students participate in practices after school, the solution was to hold practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the evening."We do have a couple kids on the team that play football or hockey and do this," Larson said. "We just worked with those families as needed (in case) if they want to do a more traditional sport that has after-school practice every day."Then there's the expense of the sport. Some competition-level mountain bikes can be over $1,000, which can be a barrier to entry for some families. Over the years, the team has bought bikes for those who just want to try the sport out."Because of this fundraiser race and some other fundraising we've done, we were able to buy a couple of team bikes that we loan out to kids that are new to the team," Larson said. "Then we navigate their first bike purchase after they know that they want to come to it."The mountain bike team isn't perfect yet. There are still plenty of students who are unaware of the team, and the lengthy travel is a fact of life that Bemidji has to deal with."I've known these guys for most of my life," Liam Larson said. "So it's more of a riding with your friends type of thing."0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Don't call up Ahmed to carry the drinks' - ThomasRehan Ahmed has played 21 white-ball matches for England [Getty Images]Leicestershire head coach Alfonso Thomas hopes England 12th man duties will not deny him the services of all-rounder Rehan Ahmed for the One-Day Cup final next month.Playing his first domestic List A game in five years, the 22-year-old hit 31 and then took a wicket with his first ball in the Foxes' semi-final win over Nottinghamshire on Sunday.Yet selection for England's T20 and ODI series with Sri Lanka could see Ahmed miss Leicestershire's final showdown with Middlesex at Trent Bridge on 20 September. "If he's playing for England that will obviously take first dibs," Thomas told BBC Radio Leicester."The one thing we don't want to see is him getting picked for England, and carry the drinks on the Saturday when he could have been playing a game of cricket."We'll cross that bridge when we get there, and we'll have conversations. If he knows he's not playing for England the day before or the day after I'm sure he'll be pushing to play as well."The 2023 winners booked their second One-Day Cup final spot in four years with a 23-run win over their East Midlands rivals, underpinned by a century from on-loan batter Hamza Shaikh.Ahmed went straight into the Foxes side just days after returning from a successful spell with Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred. "I called him up on Tuesday and he kind of answered the call with 'I'm playing on Sunday' and I said 'that's fine, you're playing, you're batting at three'," said Thomas."That's just the attitude he has. He's an absolute superstar in the changing room and I think I've got two of the most exciting talents in the country in him and Hamza Shaikh."It was a bruising afternoon for the Foxes who lost Ben Green (quad) and Steve Eskinazi (shoulder) during Notts' innings.Wicketkeeper Ben Cox was also forced off after being struck by Haseeb Hameed's bat but returned to the field after passing concussion tests."It just shows what this team is all about, everyone pulled together, the whole squad. The 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th man kept helping the boys out, kept them going on the field," said Thomas."From an all-round point of view, that was Leicester to a tee."I think Coxy will be fine, Eski we'll wait and see what the doc says and the scans. It's going to be dependent on timescales for Green with the quad."0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPhillies predicted to replace Don Mattingly with recently fired World Series champion managerPhillies predicted to replace Don Mattingly with recently fired World Series champion manager originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Philadelphia Phillies have had an up-and-down season, to say the least, especially compared to their usual standards after winning the NL East in consecutive seasons. Philadelphia struggled early in the year and quickly found itself among the league’s worst teams. The Phillies were forced to make a decision at the beginning of the season, and the organization ultimately fired former manager Rob Thomson.“There’s a major shakeup in Philadelphia. The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday morning. Don Mattingly is the interim skipper, with the team’s press release saying he’ll hold that position for the remainder of the 2026 season,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco wrote.Philadelphia will have another decision to make heading into next season: whether to keep Mattingly in the role or find a new manager. However, the Phillies are currently barely in the Wild Card picture, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale does not believe Mattingly will be back next season. Instead, he believes Philadelphia will hire Alex Cora.“Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly, who took over for Rob Thomson on April 28, not only must lead the Phillies to the postseason, but likely to the World Series or even win it to be asked back. Alex Cora, who turned down the job when Thomson was fired, is expected to be the Phillies’ next manager barring a World Series berth or title,” Nightengale wrote.Cora would be an excellent hire for the Phillies, as he is a passionate and highly experienced manager. He was recently fired by the Boston Red Sox.“The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and five members of his coaching staff Saturday in a stunning early-season overhaul with the club sitting in last place in the American League East. Bench coach Ramón Vázquez, hitting coach Peter Fatse, third-base coach Kyle Hudson, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin also were dismissed,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote. If the Phillies miss the playoffs this season, the entire organization will enter the offseason hungry for success. Cora, meanwhile, would have plenty to prove after being fired by the Red Sox earlier than expected, giving him even more motivation to show Boston that it made a mistake.Philadelphia would also be coming off a disappointing season with plenty to prove. The combination of the Phillies’ desire to bounce back and Cora’s motivation to prove himself could make for an ideal match.More MLB news:Braves reportedly release $125M All-Star, 16-year veteran with World Series experienceBraves' Walt Weiss makes brutal starting pitching announcement that won't make fans happyRed Sox's Aroldis Chapman triggers massive $13M option for next season after 40IP milestoneBraves' failed trade for Rangers' Jacob DeGrom just became GM Alex Anthopoulos' biggest blessing0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld -

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPete Buttigieg is pushing Democrats toward a 50-state strategyIf Pete Buttigieg isn’t going to run for president, he’s doing a really bad job hiding it. Buttigieg is out on the campaign trail, boosting his favored candidates, which is standard fare for any presidential wannabe at this stage of the game. What is different is that Buttigieg is spending a lot of his time and energy pushing candidates at the state legislature level. Buttigieg has started with his home state of Indiana, but apparently has a list of endorsements in other states in the works. Buttigieg sees the success that Republicans have had in wielding their power at the state level and wants Democrats to copy it. “This is an area where Democrats should learn from Republicans who spent many years patiently and cleverly building up power all the way up from the school board level,” he told Politico. Related Buttigieg’s long-term policy goals are a hard sell against the GOP’s instant gratification Buttigieg is correct that the GOP has used its control in state legislatures to pursue its agenda, including multiple anti-trans measures and partisan (and racist) gerrymandering blessed by the Supreme Court. The state legislature is also the training ground for ambitious politicians seeking to move up to the federal level. Nearly half of the current members of Congress are former state legislators. For a party whose leadership is famously geriatric, Democrats need to start grooming new talent, and state legislatures are a good place to start. Of course, Buttigieg isn’t entirely altruistic. Having some favors to call in when his presidential campaign gets underway is a side benefit to his effort. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Still, there’s no question that Democrats have underinvested in state legislative races. Right now, Republicans control 28 state legislatures to the Democrats’ 18. (Three state legislatures are split between the parties, while Alaska’s has a multipartisan coalition.) Pragmatically speaking, Buttigieg isn’t about to spearhead a movement that makes the Indiana state legislature Democratic. The political reality is that many states lean toward one party, and it takes a long time to change that, if ever. But that doesn’t mean investing in state legislative races is a waste of money. The goal isn’t to turn a deep red state like Idaho into a bright blue one. The goal is to maximize Democratic advantages where possible and mitigate Republican power as much as possible. Right now, at least, Democrats have a good chance of doing both. The party has favorable odds for flipping control of one or both houses of several state legislatures. Democrats could also break supermajority control in several other states such as Kansas and Missouri, where Republicans have veto-proof majorities. In turn, Democrats could win supermajority status in several other states, including Colorado. “For the most part, the Republicans are kind of playing defense more than offense,” Katy Owens Hubler, director of elections and redistricting at the National Conference of State Legislatures, told Stateline. Democrats are returning to the 50-state strategy, where the national party invests in every state party. The first big proponent was Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor, who was head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) 20 years ago. Dean wanted to boost the party infrastructure across the board, even in red states, to help with candidate recruitment. A lot of Beltway types, including those who went on to serve in the Obama administration, were dead set against the strategy, and it fizzled once Dean left the DNC in 2009. Fast forward two decades. In May of 2025, the DNC, now headed by Ken Martin, announces that the party will be sending monthly allowances to every state party in an effort to–you guessed it–build up the party infrastructure and recruit candidates. Martin is still pushing ahead with this effort, but many party insiders are gunning for him for the way he’s running the organization and his poor handling of finances. Buttigieg–who was himself a candidate to run the DNC in 2017–is pursuing the strategy on his own. How much impact one politician can have is likely limited. But with a blue wave looking increasingly likely, the bet may pay off for Buttigieg specifically and Democrats more generally. It will also be a hint at what Buttigieg’s presidential campaign would look like: don’t write any state off entirely. Stroud among Justin Boone's top sleeper picks at QBFantasy football managers are smarter than ever, so finding a player who’s actually being slept on can be difficult. With that in mind, let’s shine the spotlight on some players available in the late rounds or even off the waiver wire who could surprise in 2026. Over the next week, I’ll revisit my favorite sleeper candidates at every key fantasy position — starting with quarterbacks.Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL seasonC.J. Stroud, TexansStroud hasn’t been able to fully replicate his year-long rookie season production, when he was the QB11 averaging 18.5 fppg. However, full season stats can be deceiving. The first-round passer wasn’t far off early in his sophomore campaign, posting QB14 fantasy results through the first six weeks before injuries struck his receiving corps. After that, he was the QB38 from Week 7 on in 2024. While he only managed QB23 fantasy numbers last year, an injury derailed his season and caused him to miss three games. If you remove the outing where he got hurt and only played part of the contest, as well as the first game back where he struggled, Stroud averaged 16.8 fppg in his other 11 contests. That would have tied him as the QB15 with Baker Mayfield, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels. We can also quite easily paint a brighter picture for him in 2026 with a stronger supporting cast that features a true breakout candidate in wideout Jayden Higgins and another promising young receiver in Jaylin Noel emerging alongside Nico Collins. Even Tank Dell is back on the practice field and hoping to contribute after the gruesome injury that nearly ended his career. The Texans’ offense will benefit from the addition of veteran back David Montgomery, who should help bring balance to their attack after their run game suffered without Joe Mixon. The front office even made an effort to address the offensive line, though that might still be a work in progress. Regardless, unlike some of the quarterbacks going in his ADP range, Stroud is locked in as his team’s starter for the full season and he’ll face the ninth-friendliest fantasy QB schedule. In a make-or-break year for the 24-year-old, a return to his rookie year stardom could be on the horizon. Cam Ward, TitansFollowing an extremely disappointing rookie campaign, Ward has gone from hearing his name called first in the 2025 NFL Draft to becoming a fantasy afterthought this summer. Fortunately, entering his second year the environment in Tennessee has improved dramatically — creating renewed hope for the 24-year-old. That starts with a new coaching staff, which features offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Regardless of how you feel about Daboll’s time as the Giants head coach, you can’t deny that he’s a quality playcaller who helped Josh Allen and Jaxson Dart emerge as fantasy starters in his last two stops. He’ll provide a noticeable upgrade to the Titans’ offense while giving Ward a better chance to excel in Year 2. Getting comfortable in a new offense takes time, so don’t sweat Ward’s preseason struggles so far. Especially since he’s getting used to a new receiving corps that actually features legitimate playmakers. Last year, Ward was forced to throw to oft-injured veteran Calvin Ridley and a pair of Day 3 rookies in Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor. Now, the reliance on Ridley is gone thanks to the arrival of first-round wideout Carnell Tate and high-priced free agent signing Wan’Dale Robinson, who knows Daboll well from their time together in New York. When you add in a deep backfield trio of Tony Pollard, Tyjae Spears and Nick Singleton, as well as promising tight end Gunnar Helm — Tennessee finally has a real collection of skill position talent surrounding Ward. From a fantasy perspective, Ward should have the wind at his back with the third-easiest QB schedule in 2026. And while he lacks an elite ceiling due to his limited rushing production, the enhanced weaponry alone should create a significant jump in his passing numbers — turning him into an ascending fantasy QB2 with an opportunity to flirt with low-end QB1 stats if everything goes his way. Geno Smith, JetsThis one is a true sleeper, since expectations are as low as can be after Smith’s awful one-year stop in Las Vegas, which featured a midseason coordinator change and several injuries to key players including star tight end Brock Bowers. However, let’s not forget what he’s done in the past, including a breakout campaign with the Seahawks in 2022, where he finished with the sixth-most points at his position and was a top-eight QB in fantasy points per game (18.7). He was also eighth in passing yards, fourth in passing touchdowns and first in completion percentage. The 2023 season was more of a struggle, but injuries to Seattle’s offensive line — including both starting tackles going down in the opener — increased the degree of difficulty. He stumbled to a QB24 result (15.4 fppg). In 2024, Smith’s numbers bounced back and he ended the year among the top-five in passing yards and completion percentage. Fantasy-wise, that made him the QB17 on a per game basis (15.9 fppg). But he posted eight top-12 weekly performances, including six in the first half of the season. Now, coming off that dismal campaign with the Raiders, he gets a fresh start in New York. The Jets have quietly put together a very solid offense with a ton of depth at every position and an offensive line that has the makings of a solid unit with several highly-drafted blockers. Smith is barely on the radar for fantasy at the moment, but recapturing at least some of his past fantasy success is well within his range of outcomes in this offense. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLIV Vendors Say They’re Unpaid as League Seeks to Stay AfloatLIV Golf might be preparing for its next chapter with new investors, but more contractors and vendors claim they’re owed money by the league. The credit division of private investment firm BC Partners is exploring a funding deal with LIV to help the league continue operating in 2027 and beyond. This week’s LIV Golf Indianapolis event is set to pay out $30 million in prize money, but details about LIV’s expected-to-be-canceled $40 million team championship in Michigan still remain scarce. As the tumultuous 2026 season comes to a close, no full-time employees are known to have seen any missed paychecks since the Saudi PIF announced in April it would no longer fund LIV after this season. But many contract workers—both past and present—say they’re owed money for services rendered earlier this year, and remain in the dark about when or if they will receive those payments. Like many professional sports entities, LIV outsources services like video production, data collection, merchandising, tournament food and beverage operations, among others. Front Office Sports spoke with several such people and verified their current or former affiliation with LIV; they were granted anonymity for this story in order to preserve their identity as they continue working for LIV or continue their efforts to get paid. The amounts owed to individuals by LIV range from several thousand dollars to nearly $100,000, according to the people who spoke with FOS, some of whom have worked with LIV since its first event in 2022. Other contractors and vendors that have so far stayed quiet could be owed even more, those people say. One former LIV vendor went public with its dispute and sued the league last month. Mobii Systems Group Limited, a Canadian company that previously supplied LIV’s “Any Shot, Any Time” streaming option, claims LIV owes it more than $1.1 million for breach of contract, unpaid invoices, and interest. Other companies in similar positions have also been considering legal action, sources tell FOS.Some individuals and companies have experienced late payments from LIV in the past, they told FOS, but not like the current multimonth delays that have resulted in tens of thousands of dollars owed to several parties now. Communication from LIV regarding the money owed has been minimal, according to the impacted individuals, some of whom have hired lawyers and sent breach of contract notices. “There’s no response from the accounts receivable department,” one contractor said. “Even their legal counsel has not responded to demand letters.”Joe Bain, co-chair of law firm Jones Walker’s bankruptcy and restructuring team in Houston, tells FOS that withholding payments to outside entities is “absolutely” a strategy companies use when they are preparing for a potential bankruptcy filing, which LIV is widely believed to be considering. “They’re looking at their cash balance, and they’re trying to figure out how long of a runway they have, and what their options are,” Bain says. “And cash is absolutely king in this process.”Managing the Transition From PIFA common theme from LIV officials this summer has been the league’s efforts to take a “disciplined” and “sustainable” approach amid its transition from PIF funding to new investors. Corporate restructuring experts Gene Davis and Jon Zinman are leading LIV’s new independent board of directors. The running goal has been to manage LIV’s resources efficiently, according to sources, including day-to-day operations, cost structures and processes, and the league’s overall model. Nothing has been decided about next steps should new funding be secured. LIV filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice last month—a legal requirement for businesses in the U.S. with more than 100 employees to provide at least 60 days notice of potential mass layoffs. And earlier this month the league started giving some contractors a 30-day notice of the termination of their contracts, which would be in early September, albeit with language about the potential for more opportunities in a “LIV 2.0 structure.” Some contractors and vendors also work with LIV through third parties, which can further complicate matters. The PIF has spent more than $5 billion on LIV since the league launched in 2022, but terms of the fund’s exit as LIV’s lead financial backer remain unclear. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil said this month that the PIF “has been a tremendous steward of this business” and that he has “a lot of appreciation for them allowing us this time to go and find investment.” Bryson DeChameau said PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan has “done wonders for us and the global game of golf. How it moves forward, I think there’s a great place for the PIF and where they want to be moving forward.”But behind closed doors, some within LIV view the PIF differently. “The PIF is extremely difficult to work for,” a source with knowledge of the league’s operations told FOS. “And to get money from them is a huge pain in the ass.” Another source indicated that consistent communication with the PIF has been an issue for LIV’s leaders this year. The PIF is reportedly considering buying out some LIV players’ contracts “at a discount to settle any potential liability,” according to the Financial Times. Jon Rahm, who joined LIV ahead of the 2024 season and has multiple years remaining on his contract, is reportedly owed more than $100 million, while others with less starpower are said to be owed much less. DeChambeau’s contract expires after this season. The vision for “LIV 2.0” includes making players the majority equity holders in the league’s new structure.O’Neil was seen with BC Partners Credit head Ted Goldthrope during the final round of LIV Golf New York at Trump Bedminster on Aug. 9, and Al-Rumayyan was also in attendance alongside President Donald Trump. O’Neil has been leading the search for new investors all spring and summer. And while the announcement of a lead investor is positive for many, others still feel neglected amid the trying circumstances.“The frustration is compounded when it appears that the executives are still being paid regularly and on time and the CEO continues to use a private jet to travel around to meetings and tournaments,” said one LIV contractor. “The staff on the ground keeping things afloat seem to be at the bottom of the priority list.”LIV declined to comment for this story. The post LIV Vendors Say They’re Unpaid as League Seeks to Stay Afloat appeared first on Front Office Sports.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 19 Views 0 voorbeeld
