PFF: Best & worst grades for Bills defense against the Panthers
The Buffalo Bills began their preseason schedule against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 of the exhibition season. How does Pro Football Focus think the Bills did on defense? As most are aware, these preseason games is more about individual player evaluation than winning... but it is nice to take a victory home, if possible. As players are fightings for jobs and careers, some player stock goes up while others see theirs go down.In the end, head coach Joe Brady has plenty of decisions to make regarding his roster he has to get down to 53 players before the start of the regular season. In terms of some insight into those choices Brady will make, why not pull the curtain back a little bit with Pro Football Focus? With that, here are the five best and worst PFF grades on defense for the Bills against the Panthers during Week 1 of the preseason (min. 5 snaps played): 5 worst grades5. DL Ed Oliver: 46.4.4. DL Tommy Akingbesote: 32.3.3. LB Jimmy Ciarlo: 29.7.2. DL Zion Logue: 29.4.1. DL DeWayne Carter: 29.4.5 best grades5. LB Greg Rousseau: 81.6.4. LB Dorian Williams: 82.2.3. White House Taps Mean Teen In Zara Fitting Room As New Press Secretary
WASHINGTON—Touting her overall cruelty and particular delight at making others feel miserably self-conscious, the White House on Monday tapped a mean teenager from a Zara fitting room as its new press secretary. “Madison [Rhodes] has been on our radar ever since she humiliated a total stranger at a Zara changing area and sent her fleeing the store in tears,” said White House communications director Steven Cheung, recalling how the 16-year-old loudly once told a friend that the nearby customer needed to lose 30 pounds of back fat before going anywhere that ribbed tank top. “When our background check revealed that Madison had also mocked the accent of the cashier at the boba tea place and started spreading rumors for no real reason that her bestie was the official blow-job princess of the wrestling team, we were elated. And once we found out she’d cyberbullied at least three classmates into eating disorder treatment, we knew without a doubt that this was the stone-cold bitch we wanted to belittle the White House press corps for years to come.” According to sources, at least half a dozen White House correspondents had hanged themselves within hours of Rhodes’ first briefing. LIV Golf cancels team championship in Michigan, bringing early end to chaotic season
The cancellation of the team tournament, one of LIV Golf's key selling points, is yet another dark sign for the fledgling league.Jordan Bank via Getty ImagesLIV Golf has officially canceled its team championship in Michigan, the latest broadside in a series of massive setbacks for the reeling golf tour.LIV Golf announced on Monday that the season-ending team championship event in Michigan, which was set to start on August 27 at The Cardinal outside of Detroit, has been called off.Instead, this season's individual and team champions will be crowned this week at the event in Indianapolis. "By concluding the season now, we can put our full resources behind what comes next and maintain the operational rigor this transition demands,” CEO Scott O’Neil said in a statement, in part. “We are reimagining LIV Golf as a fundamentally new league owned by the players and anchored in a sustainable business model, with an evolved fan experience built for the markets where the game is growing fastest across the globe and the support of world-class partners … As we concentrate on finishing the season strong and building the next chapter of LIV Golf, we’ll carry the energy and enthusiasm our fans have shown us into what comes next.”This marks the second tournament of the season to be canceled. LIV Golf's New Orleans event was postponed in April, but there has been no real attempt to reschedule it. That event became the source of friction between LIV Golf and the government of the state of Louisiana, one of many entities circling LIV Golf and seeking some form of restitution as the tour's fortunes turned worse. There is now just a single tournament left in the 2026 campaign. LIV Golf Indianapolis will start on August 20.The signs of the championship's cancellation began earlier in the summer — or, to be specific, didn't begin. Most significant golf tournaments require substantial build-out — construction of grandstands and hospitality tents, routing of power cables, et cetera — but as the summer wore on, no such activity took place at The Cardinal. The team event had vanished from Fox Sports' TV schedule well before its official cancellation. And in the waning moments of the Bedminster event, TNT Sports' Craig Doyle said the individual championship in Indianapolis beginning Aug. 20 would be the season's final event. So, what's next for LIV Golf?Despite its assurances that all is well, the future for LIV Golf remains incredibly uncertain.Brought into existence and funded for the first four years of its existence by the billions of Saudi Arabia's effectively limitless Public Investment Fund, LIV Golf suddenly found itself in dire straits in April when the PIF pulled its support. LIV Golf has spent the intervening months searching for outside investment to keep its operations going. Early in August, prior to its Bedminster event, LIV Golf announced that it had secured an unnamed "lead investor" to fund the league for several years to come. Specifics were not announced at the time, nor was the name of the investor. While LIV Golf players and officials kept up brave and enthusiastic public faces, the truth was more dire: With rare exceptions, LIV has struggled to connect with golf fans even with the might of Saudi Arabia's wealth behind it. How would a pared-down LIV Golf fare in a competitive sports market? One of LIV Golf's key selling points is its team framework — 13 teams made up of four players each, many bound by national origin. LIV Golf has long touted the franchise model of teams as a potentially lucrative investment, and the teams' logos are ever-present at events and on the apparel of LIV Golf players who participate in majors and other outside tournaments. That emphasis on team play is what makes the loss of the team event such a dark sign. And this year, the league has been marred both by legal battles and several big names making the jump back to the PGA Tour. Brooks Koepka returned to the PGA Tour earlier this year, and Patrick Reed will do so later this fall. Bryson DeChambeau, perhaps the biggest name on the circuit, still does not have a new contract with the elague. There have been multiple lawsuits filed against LIV Golf, too, including one that accused it of stealing the idea for the league. The Asian Tour struck a deal to leave LIV Golf and partner with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour earlier this month, too, something that reportedly caught O'Neil and LIV Golf by surprise.LIV Golf's future remains very much in doubt unless and until the unnamed "lead investor" comes through, and the conditions on that investment could be significant and substantial — requiring star players like DeChambeau and Jon Rahm to stick with the breakaway league, for instance. So while LIV Golf's 2026 season is almost over, its challenges still remain.

Erasmus fires back at All Blacks' 'slow game' claims ahead of Ellis Park test
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — It couldn't be South Africa vs. New Zealand without a phony war.Building to their first test at Ellis Park on Saturday, the touring All Blacks have been pushing the narrative that South African teams including the Springboks deliberately slow down the game to undermine New Zealand attempts to speed it up.Coach Dave Rennie, assistant Tana Umaga and senior player Codie Taylor have all made the claim while scoring 142 points and conceding 40 against three clubs.Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus disagreed with the assertion on Monday and noted the last two test fixtures between them last September; New Zealand won 24-17 in Auckland and a week later South Africa won 43-10 in Wellington.“Were those slow games?” was Erasmus' rhetorical question to the media.Beside Erasmus was technical adviser Jaco Peyper, who refereed 67 tests, many involving the All Blacks. Peyper emphasized that teams have 30 seconds to form a set-piece once the referee marks the spot with his foot.“We have to adhere to that and we train for it,” Peyper said. “You can do whatever you want inside those 30 seconds. There's nothing in the law that says you can't idle before the mark is given.”Erasmus added: “If in those 30 seconds you want to go down and pray, that is your right.”But the coach understood and sympathized with the All Blacks' mind games. Erasmus believed it was born out of World Rugby changing the protocol around pre-match meetings between the coach and the ref. Coaches can no longer meet the ref separately. And if one coach doesn't want to meet the ref then they both can't.Rennie said on Monday that Erasmus “felt there wasn't any need to meet” this weekend's referee Matthew Carley. “I feel the same way to be honest.”Rennie added they sent video clips to World Rugby in a system open to other teams and got clarity in reply. Erasmus believed not meeting this week saved an open argument between the coaches over time wasting. But he also felt the new protocols were frustrating all international coaches and widening the gap between coaches and match officials, leaving coaches to voice their opinions through the media.“I totally understand why the All Blacks voiced some of their concerns,” Erasmus said. “That's the only option.”Meanwhile, Erasmus said they were waiting on captain Siya Kolisi (hamstring) and prop Ox Nche (knee) to be cleared of "niggles."And New Zealand summoned uncapped Highlanders tighthead prop Saula Ma'u to replace Chiefs loosehead Ollie Norris, who suffered tour-ending knee cartilage damage against the Bulls on Saturday.___See AP’s full rugby coverage here

Titans QB Mitchell Trubisky being evaluated for a biceps injury
Titans backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky made an early exit from practice on Monday. Reporters at the workout said that Trubisky grabbed his right arm after throwing a pass. Head coach Robert Saleh said at a post-practice press conference that Trubisky is being evaluated for a biceps injury. Trubisky is currently the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart behind Cam Ward. The veteran signed with the Titans as a free agent this offseason. Will Levis is the third quarterback on the roster and would be in line for more playing time if Trubisky is sidelined for a stretch. That would give him a chance to back up his assertion that he's one of the best 32 quarterbacks in football.

Aston Villa star targeted as replacement for Ballon d’Or winner
Aston Villa star targeted as replacement for Ballon d’Or winnerOllie Watkins Interest Emerges as Al-Hilal Prioritise Karim Benzema ExitAl-Hilal are exploring a significant attacking reshuffle, with Get Football News France reporting that the Saudi club want to move Karim Benzema on, while Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has been identified as a possible successor. The situation is far from straightforward. Benzema, now 38, is said to be open to leaving, which aligns with Simone Inzaghi’s wish to reshape his options in attack. Yet this is not a routine transfer discussion. Because Benzema’s contract is backed both by Al-Hilal and Saudi authorities, any departure requires alignment across multiple parties. That immediately makes the process more layered than a standard player exit. There is also the financial complication. Benzema wants to leave on a free transfer and still receive the final year of his deal. That outcome does not appeal to Al-Hilal, the Saudi Pro League, or the Saudi authorities. As a result, the player’s future remains unresolved, even if there appears to be a willingness from some sides to bring the relationship to an end.Photo IMAGOOllie Watkins on Al-Hilal shortlistAgainst that backdrop, Ollie Watkins has emerged as a target. The Aston Villa forward, who turns 30, is viewed as a leading candidate if Al-Hilal can create the space and financial clarity required to act. For now, that caveat is crucial. Without a resolution to the Benzema file, there can be no meaningful progress on Watkins. That leaves Villa in a familiar modern position, aware that interest from the Saudi Pro League can develop quickly, while also knowing many of these situations hinge on moving parts elsewhere. Watkins is an established Premier League striker and England international, so his profile fits what a club like Al-Hilal would seek if they are making a marquee change up front.Photo IMAGOKarim Benzema exit remains keyThe immediate focus, though, remains Benzema. Until his departure is agreed, whether by compromise or more complex negotiation, Al-Hilal’s plans for a replacement are likely to stay on hold. Watkins may be admired, but at this stage he looks more like the next step in the process than the current one.Our ViewFrom an Aston Villa perspective, this is the type of report that will make supporters uneasy. Watkins is so central to the way Villa play. He gives the side pace, pressing, goals, movement in behind and reliability, and those qualities are not easy to replace, especially in one window. Even if Al-Hilal cannot move immediately, the fact his name is in the conversation is enough to raise concern. The worry is not simply about one bid landing tomorrow. It is about the broader threat of a wealthy club circling a player who has already proven himself at the highest domestic level. Once that interest becomes concrete, it can shift the mood around a squad and force a club into difficult decisions.Villa fans will hope the club’s stance is firm. Watkins feels like one of those players who should only leave if the offer is enormous and the succession plan is already in place. Losing him late in the window would be especially damaging. Supporters will likely see this as something to monitor closely, even if the Benzema issue currently slows everything down. For now, there may be no immediate panic, but there is every reason for caution.

Cliftonville members vote in favour of TIG takeover
The future of Cliftonville is now settled as members have voted in favour of a takeover by the Toronto Investment Group [TIG] following a long-running saga.It appeared a deal was close to being completed last year when then Cliftonville chairman Kieran Harding was given permission by members to enter negotiations, but would later put a pause on those talks which led to TIG taking a step back. The door appeared to be shut in January when TIG took their offer off the table, but the issue resurfaced when members voted in a June EGM to authorise the club's management committee to enter formal negotiations with TIG.It came down to a vote at Monday's latest with a 75% majority required to back the resolution tabled by current chairman Kevin Crossan and members gave approval to back the £3million takeover."At this evening's Extraordinary General Meeting of Cliftonville FC, members of the club voted in favour of a special resolution authorising the board of directors to complete an investment agreement with the Toronto Investment Group," read a club statement."We thank all of our members for their attendance at tonight's meeting, for their attentive examination of the transaction structure presented by the club's legal representatives and for participating in the historic poll that has shaped the future of Ireland's oldest football club."We look forward to a long and prosperous association with Drew Green, John Muffolini, Ron Davidson and Conor Devine, and extend sincere gratitude for the professionalism and commitment they have demonstrated throughout this process."

MLB approves sale of San Diego Padres to José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones
San Diego Padres' Luis Campusano, second from left, celebrates with teammates after hitting a walk off single to defeat the Brewers during the eleventh inning of a baseball game Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, in San Diego. (AP Photo/Gregory Bull)2026-08-17T18:26:34Z Major League Baseball’s team owners unanimously have approved the sale of the San Diego Padres to an investor group led by private equity billionaire José E. Feliciano and his wife and business partner, Kwanza Jones. The league announced the approval Monday after a vote. Feliciano and Jones reached an agreement in May to buy the Padres from the family of late owner Peter Seidler at an MLB-record valuation of $3.9 billion. The deal is still contingent on the official closing of the transaction in the coming weeks.“José and Kwanza understand the unique place the Padres hold in San Diego and the powerful bond between the club and its fans,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We look forward to their leadership of the Padres and to working with them to build on the club’s strong foundation in a market that is so important to Major League Baseball.” Seidler’s family announced its intention to explore a sale of the Padres last November, two years after Peter Seidler’s death. The 53-year-old Feliciano, a co-founder of Santa Monica-based private equity firm Clearlake Capital, emerged from the competition as the Seidler family’s top choice.Padres CEO Erik Greupner and general manager A.J. Preller will remain in charge of day-to-day operations, according to MLB’s announcement. “We are a family first, and becoming owners of the San Diego Padres means joining an even larger one,” Jones and Feliciano said in a statement. “We are grateful to the Seidler family, and especially to Peter, for raising the expectations of what this franchise can achieve. ... Our ambition is clear: to bring a World Series championship to San Diego and build an enduring organization capable of competing for championships year after year. We intend to be engaged owners, bringing our energy, experience and perspective while working alongside the talented team already in place and investing ambitiously and thoughtfully in the Padres’ future.“We are all in and committed to winning.” Read More Peter Seidler assumed majority control of the Padres in 2020 after first joining their ownership group in 2012, but he became beloved in San Diego for his aggressive financial pursuit of winning and his eagerness to engage with the team’s fan base. He died at 63 in November 2023. The Padres dramatically increased their payroll under Seidler, allowing Preller to build the foundation for the current team, which has made four playoff appearances in the past six years and won at least 89 games in three of the last four seasons during the most successful stretch in franchise history. San Diego is currently in the playoff race again, winning 17 of its last 24 games to surge into an NL wild-card position at 67-58.Manfred thanked the Seidler family, including John Seidler, who became the Padres’ chairman after his brother’s death.“Continuing the legacy established by the late Peter Seidler, the Padres reached the postseason four times in the last six years, energized one of baseball’s most passionate fanbases and strengthened the club’s role as a cornerstone of the San Diego community,” Manfred said. When Feliciano and Jones reached their agreement to purchase the Padres earlier this year, they praised the team as “a unifying force in San Diego, rooted in community, connection and belonging.” They’ve since been spotted at Padres games in San Diego and in Mexico City. The Padres have never won a World Series, but they were a valuable commodity for potential owners as the only team in the four biggest North American sports leagues in a metropolitan area with roughly 3.3 million people. Downtown Petco Park has become one of the liveliest ballparks in the sport, and the Padres ranked second in the majors in attendance last season.Feliciano, who was born in Puerto Rico, becomes the second Latino principal owner in baseball, along with the Los Angeles Angels’ Arte Moreno. Latino and Hispanic players comprise roughly 30% of major league rosters.Feliciano and Jones will hold an introductory news conference at Petco Park on Monday, Aug. 24.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB GREG BEACHAM Beacham is a sports writer in California.

Justice Department creates a new pathway to restore gun rights for some convicted of felonies
Attorney General Todd Blanche listens as President Donald Trump speaks at the David Mack Center for Training and Intelligence, Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, in Garden City, N.Y. (AP Photo/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)2026-08-17T18:25:42Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department finalized a rule Monday that will pave the way for people who’ve been barred from owning firearms because of criminal convictions to apply to have their gun rights reinstated. The process launched by newly confirmed Attorney General Todd Blanche is a victory for Second Amendment advocates who have long pushed for nonviolent people with felony convictions to be given a pathway to regain their legal right to own firearms. “The Second Amendment is not a second-class right, and the federal government should not permanently deprive Americans of a constitutional right without regard to whether they pose a danger to public safety,” Blanche said in a statement. The attorney general said the new process will protect “public safety while giving deserving Americans a real path to restoration.”It’s the latest move by President Donald Trump’s administration to ease firearms restrictions. The Justice Department moved earlier this year to roll back and modify a slate of gun regulations. Separately, the department recently decided against challenging a court ruling that struck down regulations on firearm suppressors and certain guns. Federal law has long allowed people who’ve had their gun rights stripped because of felony convictions to petition the government for the ability to own firearms again, but Congress since 1992 has effectively barred the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from processing applications. The Trump administration’s rule aims to circumvent that by establishing a new application system using an online portal. Read More The Justice Department says restoration will be granted on a case-by-case basis, weighing a person’s record and reputation to determine whether they pose a likely threat to public safety. Officials say people who have been convicted of violent crimes, registered sex offenders, people living in the country illegally and others whom officials believe pose a danger to society will be denied “absent extraordinary circumstances.” ALANNA DURKIN RICHER Richer covers the Justice Department and federal courts. Joey Logano and Team Penske are making a push for NASCAR points as the Chase approaches
Team Penske driver Joey Logano (22) celebrates in victory lane after winning the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway, Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, in Richmond Va. (AP Photo/Robert Simmons)2026-08-17T19:00:20Z Joey Logano has three championships in the NASCAR Cup Series but none in the Chase system that has returned this season. The Team Penske driver is embracing the challenge of proving he can win a title in the format that puts a greater emphasis on banking consistently strong finishes.“Do I have a little chip on my shoulder? That’s a clear yes,” Logano said with a chuckle after his victory Saturday at Richmond Raceway. “So much so that our team slogan is ‘4 the haters.’ That’s where we’re at. That’s good extra motivation.”With an impressive surge from 20th to ninth in the standings over the past six races, Logano has flipped the narrative on the elimination playoffs that were in place for 12 years. From 2014-25, the waning races of NASCAR’s regular season typically were a scramble to make the championship field as a win earned a berth. But that safety valve has disappeared in the Chase, which will rely entirely on points to set the 16-driver field. The top 16 in the provisional Chase have been unchanged for the past four races, and the grid for the 10-race title run likely will remain the same at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend.Shane van Gisbergen holds the 16th and final spot by 50 points over Ryan Preece, who dropped 21 points further below the Chase cutline with a 17th-place finish at Richmond. The next three drivers ranked outside the Chase — Ross Chastain (12th at Richmond), Brad Keselowski (26th) and Erik Jones (27th) — also lost ground, diluting the potential drama of a surprise qualifier.“The number of guys that feel the pressure of making the Chase is probably less,” said Christopher Bell, who is among seven drivers who have clinched Chase spots. “In years past, everybody on the outside still had an opportunity to get in, and now it’s kind of dwindled to a couple guys fighting for the spots.” Read More There’s been more intrigue toward the top half of the standings — particularly the progress of the Team Penske trio.As Logano continued his push up the points ladder, teammate Ryan Blaney moved past Ty Gibbs into second in the standings at Richmond. Austin Cindric, Penske’s third driver, shored up his title eligibility with a career-best third on a short track to move up a spot to 15th in the points. Denny Hamlin has a 115-point lead on Blaney and likely will clinch the Chase’s top seed Sunday at New Hampshire, which will be followed by the Aug. 29 regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway. The standings then will be reset for the Chase, which begins Sept. 6 at Darlington Raceway with the championship leader ahead by 25 points. Second will start 10 points ahead of third, and the remaining 14 spots will be separated by five-point increments.“Getting to second is top of mind because every point is going to matter,” Blaney said. There also is an emphasis on finishing the regular season in the top half of the points standings.Racing Insights, a NASCAR analytics firm, ran more than 25,000 computer simulations of Chase outcomes, and the champion started in the top six 85% of the time.Logano, who made the Chase only once while racing under the system in his first five Cup seasons from 2009-13, is 36 points from sixth-ranked Chase Elliott. “We’ve been able to switch our goals from making the Chase to winning the championship,” said Logano, whose No. 22 Ford was ranked 17th before winning two of the past four races. “It’s quite the turnaround. I look at the last month and a half, we’ve been capable of winning all of them.”Logano could be among several more drivers who lock into the championship Sunday with a solid result at New Hampshire.Crew chief Paul Wolfe credited Logano with buoying morale when the team notched only two top-five finishes in the first half of the season.“I’m proud of everyone sticking together,” Logano said. “There are times you see teams break, and it doesn’t take much longer running the way we were until something probably was going to break. We’ve been able to make quite the recovery to have a legit shot at the championship.” Larson double dutyAfter finishing sixth at Richmond, Kyle Larson immediately flew to Iowa and scored his fourth victory in the Knoxville Nationals, a prestigious sprint car event. Larson qualified on the pole position last week by winning a preliminary race at the renowned dirt track in Knoxville, Iowa.He had expected to miss Saturday’s main event because of the schedule conflict with Richmond, but a rain delay at Knoxville Raceway allowed the two-time Cup Series champion to arrive in time to lead all 50 laps. “It’s extremely surreal just to talk about the day and the range of emotions,” Larson said.___ See AP’s full auto racing coverage here 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Miami Dolphins have Major Burns at safety who's never heard of M*A*S*H
MIAMI GARDENS — It takes some doing if, while playing in a secondary that includes Storm Duck, you have a name that stands out.Meet Major Burns. And get ready for a surprise.Buy Miami Dolphins tickets on StubHubChances are, if the name Major Burns rings a bell, it’s not in a football sense, but for the character portrayed by the late Larry Linville in M*A*S*H, one of the most-acclaimed TV series of all time, and the late Robert Duvall in the film of the same name. So upon learning that the Miami Dolphins have a first-year player named Major Burns trying to make the roster as a safety, the automatic assumption is that his parents were fans of the show, which ran from 1972-83, or the film.“I don’t know a lot about him,” Burns (the football player) said Monday, Aug. 17 following another practice under a scorching sun. “I get that question a lot, though.”More Miami Dolphins: Miami Dolphins takeaways: Good day for Malik Willis, Green Bay importsIt turns out that Burns actually knows as close to nothing about his fictional namesake as you can get.“I haven’t seen M*A*S*H,” Burns said. Not even once?“Not even once.”Maybe it’s just as well. Major Frank Burns is best remembered for his longstanding affair with Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan. Judging by his bumbling ways in the operating room, he would have made a horrible safety. This Major Burns played in United Football LeagueThe football-playing Burns, on the other hand, is a 6-foot-2, 209-pounder from LSU who wasn’t drafted but spent time with the Chicago Bears last summer. He joined the United Football League’s Houston Gamblers this past spring and had 45 tackles (10 solo) and eight passes defensed. He led the league with four interceptions and made the All-UFL team. The UFL experience, he said, helped him in “getting that swagger back,” although that wasn’t his only focus.“I didn't want to harp too much on the NFL because I felt like I owed it to my team to just be present,” Burns said. “So just staying down, you know, taking it day by day and just showing why I deserve to be back at this level was a big thing for me in the UFL.”It has made for a busier 2026 for Burns compared to most players in NFL camps. He’s not complaining.“It’s definitely my second season,” he said. “This is a blessing, dog.”Burns played 30 snaps in the preseason-opening loss to Washington, making four tackles. He was singled out by coach Jeff Hafley for his tackling.Although Burns can’t claim any connection to the TV character, there is a story behind how he got his name. The inspiration was Major Applewhite, the former Texas Longhorns quarterback and current coach at South Alabama.“My mama went to a Texas A&M game (vs. Texas) when she was pregnant with me,” he said. “And she heard his name through a loudspeaker and she told my dad it’d probably be a cool name. She wanted my name to sound good coming out of a loudspeaker. I guess she knew I was going to be a football player, right?”It sure beats being tied to the least-popular surgeon in Korea — if, that is, football’s Major Burns ever catches up with the fictional Major Burns.“I’m going to make that an assignment of mine to go watch,” he said.Hal Habib covers the Miami Dolphins for The Palm Beach Post. Gay principal says school board made up fake pedophilia allegations to fire him
A Wisconsin educator is suing his former school district for discrimination, alleging that several members of the district’s board worked with anti-LGBTQ+ activists to fabricate a pretext to fire him because he is gay, going so far as to allegedly write an “anonymous” letter falsely accusing him of “inappropriate conduct” with children and distributing flyers blaming him for bringing “liberal extremists” to the community. According to Jeffrey Peterson’s lawsuit, the campaign against him included spreading false allegations of “grooming,” cooked up by board members affiliated with anti-LGBTQ+ groups Moms for Liberty, the Natural Family Foundation, and the Convention of States. Related Gay principal suing for discrimination after he was monitored for “indoctrination” & then fired Peterson, who became principal of the Raymond School in 2021, alleges that the campaign to remove him began following a “contentious” 2022 school board election that saw Moms for Liberty-backed candidates Gwen Keller and Janell Wise win seats on the Raymond School Board alongside anti-LGBTQ+ board president Audrey Kostuch. Shortly after the election, the board gave Arthur Binhack, an unelected anti-LGBTQ+ “political operative” with no children at the Raymond School and a history of posting Nazi quotes on social media, “unprecedented access… to scrutinize the school’s policies, teachers, and staff,” according to the complaint. The board also installed Michael Garvey as interim superintendent. The suit alleges that during the fall of 2022, Garvey “made numerous comments to Peterson about LGBTQ teachers which were veiled messages that Peterson’s sexual orientation was a problem.” As a part-time employee, Garvey worked only two days per week. But the following April, after only 34 days working alongside Peterson, Garvey gave him “a very poor performance evaluation— the first and only poor evaluation Peterson had received during his twenty-nine years working for Wisconsin schools.” Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In late August 2023, Binhack allegedly disseminated flyers blaming Peterson for “liberal extremists…spewing hateful Rhetoric,” and in September published a social media post encouraging residents to support Peterson’s removal. Around the same time, Binhack allegedly coordinated with a woman named Kari Morgan and Racine County Moms for Liberty vice chair Joann Koenecke on an open records request seeking records and files pertaining to Peterson. The three allegedly “manipulated” the records they received and disseminated them to the public and the media. According to the lawsuit, included with the altered documents was an “anonymous” letter, written by Morgan, Keller, Kostuch, and fellow board member Amanda Falaschi, “that contained false information that Peterson was being investigated for inappropriate conduct with children.” At a public meeting, Kostuch, Wise, Keller, and Falaschi voted not to renew Peterson’s contract, with board member Amy Helvick opposing the move, stating that Peterson “was not being fairly or accurately assessed.” In early May 2024, Peterson was informed that while his contract was not being terminated, he would be placed on unpaid leave for the remainder of his tenure. Peterson’s lawyers argue that this, in fact, constituted termination in violation of his contract’s “termination for cause” provision. In addition to his lawsuit, which names Kostuch, Keller, Falaschi, Wise, Binhack, Morgan, Koenecke, and Garvey as defendants along with the district, Peterson filed a discrimination complaint with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development’s Equal Rights Division (ERD) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in September 2023. According to the lawsuit, Peterson is still awaiting a decision from the ERD, nearly three years later. “The Defendants and their proxies fabricated a pretext to fire Peterson based on his sexual orientation,” the complaint states. “This pretext includes false statements about his performance, allegations of pedophilia, and numerous other fictitious accusations. As a result, Peterson has suffered severe injuries to his reputation and mental and emotional well-being.” The lawsuit argues that not only does the alleged true reason for Peterson’s dismissal — his sexual orientation — constitute illegal discrimination and retaliation, the defendants’ pretextual reason is also likely a violation of his First Amendment rights. The board claims it based its decision not to renew Peterson’s contract on the findings of a misconduct investigation conducted by the law firm Stadler Sacks, LLC, which the lawsuit describes as biased against Peterson. The Sacks report, according to the complaint, “cites several examples of [Peterson’s] exercise of free speech as the primary reason for the adverse employment actions Defendants took against” him. Peterson is seeking compensatory relief and punitive damages, in addition to other relief, and has requested a jury trial. Todd Blanche Vows To Remain Fully Independent Of The Law
WASHINGTON—Assuring the American people he would not let the legal system sway his judgment in any decision he makes, recently sworn-in Attorney General Todd Blanche vowed at a press conference Monday to remain fully independent of the law. “The autonomy of the Office of the Attorney General is paramount, and I will defend it against any act, statute, ordinance, or even basic common-law principle,” said Blanche, emphasizing that no federal law or constitutional restriction would have any influence whatsoever upon his investigations, prosecutions, or other official actions. “For far too long, the Department of Justice has displayed a prominent pro-law bias, but under my tenure that will be rectified immediately. As of this morning, I have shelved all cases against those accused of crimes and launched inquiries into several people toward whom the president has expressed a slight personal distaste.” Blanche added that he would wholeheartedly defend President Donald Trump from any attempt to restrain his actions using the U.S. Constitution. Some Pa. schools are cutting off charter students’ access to yellow buses after court ruling
2026-08-17T19:23:39Z Two weeks before the start of classes at his all-boys charter school near Pittsburgh, founder Darryl Canady received an email from his local public school district saying it wouldn’t provide traditional bus rides to his students this year.Instead, Woodland Hills School District said it would supply each of the more than 140 students at LIFE Male STEAM Academy with Pittsburgh Regional Transit cards to get to and from class.“Please note that this will be the only option offered by the school district this school year,” the email read. The notice took Canady by surprise. Nobody at the district had contacted him to talk about shifting his students to public transit, and the email provided no explanation for the decision.“Everybody’s concerned,” Canady told Spotlight PA, referring to his students’ parents. “People don’t want to put their sons, especially 10 and 11 year olds, on a bus. And you may have to change multiple buses.” School districts in Pennsylvania are required by law to provide “ free transportation ” to most charter school students who live within their boundaries — a service public school districts and their advocates say is a growing burden due to rising costs and a shortage of bus drivers.Woodland Hills’ decision is one of several instances in recent years where a Pennsylvania school district has at least tried to shift its primary means of transporting charter school students onto public transit, rather than traditional yellow school buses. And this January, districts hoping to cut transportation costs notched a victory. In a long-awaited ruling, the state Supreme Court said school districts are indeed allowed to end bus service for charter students, so long as they provide alternative free transportation — like the bus passes Canady’s students are set to receive. Read More While the ruling offered clarity, the issue isn’t settled. Republican lawmakers in Harrisburg are backing measures that would effectively undo pieces of the ruling, and charter school advocates say if that doesn’t pan out, they may go back to court.Students using public transit is nothing new in Pennsylvania. Multiple districts, especially those in urban areas, like the School District of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and Allentown School District, already partner with local transit authorities to help get their traditional students to and from campus. Also, both the federal departments of education and transportation list public transit as a “ safe, accessible, reliable ” method for transporting students. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. But charter school advocates say the lack of infrastructure in some rural and suburban regions can limit the safety of students reaching and riding public transit, and lengthen commute times. They also argue that school districts can leverage the ruling to pressure parents to keep children in traditional classrooms rather than switch to charters.Districts that transport students are eligible for state subsidies to offset costs and must follow strict state regulations that allow the use of “school conveyances, private conveyances, or electric railways, or other common carriers.”Pennsylvania reimburses roughly half of a district’s transportation costs on average through a subsidy program, according to the state Department of Education. The amount each receives is calculated based on factors like the number of pupils transported, the taxable property values within the district, and contract expenses. Not all transportation methods are equally expensive, however. The January court ruling noted that using public transit was expected to be much cheaper for the school in question — the state would have fully reimbursed public bus passes, but not school buses. Woodland Hills isn’t the only district flexing its new court-approved ability to cut charter students off from its buses. The Whitehall-Coplay School District administration also notified parents earlier this summer that it would issue Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority passes for all charter students 12 years and older. That decision, which the district said in a letter was to “optimize our resources” and ensure sustainability, sparked outcry from impacted parents at at least one school board meeting. One charter school advocate at that meeting was Susan Mauser, CEO of Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School in Bethlehem. Mauser told Spotlight PA that under the routes proposed by LANTA, some of her secondary school students would need to walk up to 1.9 miles to reach their bus stop. “I’m a big believer in public transportation when it is on time and reliable and safe,” Mauser said, noting reliability is less of a concern in cities. “And in this case, I just don’t know that we have the infrastructure in our area in order to be able to accommodate this.”Whitehall-Coplay School District said it would continue providing rides for Mauser’s students during the first two weeks of the school year so parents could have more time to understand the update, she said. She told Spotlight PA that she is exploring legal options against the district, if it does not adequately address the charter parents’ concerns. The district did not return a request for comment. Mackenzie Christ, communications director of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, told Spotlight PA that although costs vary drastically by district, transportation is a “significant responsibility and expense” for schools.“Student transportation is a complex issue that involves considerations such as safety, accessibility, operational capacity and available resources,” Christ said in an email. “School districts across Pennsylvania continue to face challenges related to transportation services, including ongoing shortages of qualified bus drivers.”Pennsylvania’s charter school enrollment has seen steady growth since the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, there were more than 174,000 charter and cyber charter school students in Pennsylvania last school year, according to the state Department of Education. Compare that to 140,000 in 2019.Did lawmakers mean ‘identical’ transportation? This year’s state Supreme Court ruling on charter student transportation dates to 2018, when Allegheny County’s Propel Schools and Betty Bell, a grandparent of a Propel student, sued Wilkinsburg School District over its decision to switch charter students from school buses to free bus passes. At issue in the lawsuit was whether state law intended to guarantee the exact same transport methods for charter and public school students. In a section describing when schools do and do not need to provide transportation, the law says that if public schools opt to provide it in certain situations, “transportation shall also be provided to charter schools under the same conditions.”A trial court ruled in favor of Wilkinsburg, and that decision was upheld by Commonwealth Court on appeal. (Though Commonwealth Court had sided with the plaintiffs in their complaint that the district should have sought approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education before making changes to its transportation schedule, that decision was overturned by the state Supreme Court on appeal.)In January, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court maintained that the phrase “under the same conditions” was not applicable to the type of transportation provided. They ruled that it references the necessary conditions in which transportation needs to be provided to certain students who may have initially been exempted from the requirement.“Again, had the General Assembly intended to require identical transportation between charter and public school students, it could have easily said so — and presumably would have done so in the first sentence of the statute, not the second, by simply inserting the word ‘identical’ between ‘free transportation,’” Justice Kevin Dougherty wrote in the explanation of the majority’s opinion.Still, the debate may not be totally resolved. The plaintiffs raised some constitutional concerns during the trial that the state Supreme Court did not consider in its final ruling. That may leave room for charter schools to challenge the constitutionality of the law in a separate suit.Sonya Meadows, senior director of government relations at Propel Schools, told Spotlight PA that before pursuing such a case, she is focused on working with lawmakers to rewrite the state’s requirements to rectify the “inequity” impacting charter schools students. Some of the plans that Propel Schools parents have challenged in Western Pennsylvania would see students as young as five years old riding public transit to and from school.“They shouldn’t be able to say, ‘Well, if you go to a school district school, we’re going to give you a school bus, but if you go to a public charter school, here’s a public bus pass.’ That’s not equitable,” Meadows said. “In fact, that’s rather discriminatory.”The debate could spark further tensions in the state Capitol, where alternatives to traditional public schools remain a constant sticking point.Republican lawmakers are looking to undo much of the state Supreme Court ruling, and require schools to provide charter students — specifically, ones younger than high school age — with transportation “under the same terms and conditions, including mode of transportation” as traditional students. Neither chamber has advanced eitherbill out of committee.State Sen. Dawn Keefer (R., York) is behind her chamber’s proposal to prevent charter students in kindergarten through eighth grade from being moved to public transit. The House’s version would be kindergarten through sixth grade.“We don’t even let them go to recess by themselves,” Keefer told Spotlight PA, “but we’re going to let a, you know, seven (or) eight year old on a public bus?”State House Education Committee Chair Pete Schweyer (D., Lehigh) said the transportation of charter students points to larger issues in how Pennsylvania funds school transportation. State law is so outdated, he said, that bus drivers are required to maintain print logs of their mileage and are barred from using digital methods, like GPS.Schwyer noted that the state House near-unanimously passed legislation last year to update that provision and collect data intended to help lawmakers make future changes to regulations. He jabbed at Republicans for not considering the bill in the state Senate.“At any given point in time, they could decide to actually take a look at the transportation issue and not try to once again divide the charter school community from the traditional school district community,” Schweyer said.State Senate Education Committee Chair Lynda Schlegel Culver (R., Northumberland) did not respond to a request for comment on the court case, or the school transportation-related bills.___This story was originally published by Spotlight PA and distributed through a partnership with The Associated Press.

Unfortunately, “Do Bronx” was forced to withdraw after the sudden death of his close friend and training partner, Allan Nascimento.Tsarukyan defeated Oliveira by split decision at UFC 300 back in early 2024.“Charles’ friend died and he cannot train; but I don’t understand, in 3-4 days he’s doing training and back in camp,” Tsarukyan told Yahoo Sports. “Probably they already set up a fight with Diego Lopes. He was just finding an excuse. To lose somebody is so hard, but you could beat me and dedicate the victory to your friend. Fight me or Diego Lopes? For sure he would pick Diego Lopes.”Sadly, this is not the only dumb thing said following Nascimento’s death.Oliveira is now in talks to return against Diego Lopes in a lightweight affair for the upcoming UFC 334 card in November, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Nothing is confirmed any this time, but it would certainly give “Do Bronx” more time to grieve and get his focus back.

Emerging Panthers WR may have sustained setback
A summer standout for the Carolina Panthers may have sustained a setback.Second-year receiver Ja'seem Reed did not participate in Monday's outing of training camp. Head coach Dave Canales was asked about Reed's status following practice."Ja'seem's got a sore calf. We're gonna image that today, see what that is," Canales replied. "Came out of the game okay, but then things start to present themselves a little bit in the days after. So, we're gonna check that out."That game, Carolina's second of the preseason, saw Reed hit the end zone. The 23-year-old accounted for the Panthers' first touchdown in their 29-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills—bringing up his totals in exhibition play up to five receptions, 47 yards and two scores.Reed, who spent all of the 2025 campaign on the practice squad, could be trending towards capturing a spot on the initial 53-man roster. General manager Dan Morgan gave Reed a bit of an endorsement during the broadcast of Saturday's game, saying he's "helped himself a lot" throughout camp.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Emerging Panthers WR may have sustained setback

Ask Pinstripe Alley: Yankees mailbag questions request
The Yankees have enjoyed one of the best pitching runs I can remember this team providing, each and every starter taking their turn in the rotation and delivering while the bullpen holds their own in the backend of games. Unfortunately, it has coincided with one of the most futile offensive performances I can remember from a Yankees team, rivaling the days of the 2013-2014 squads that had no business winning as many games as they ultimately did. Unlike them this year’s Yanks are meant to be contenders, and still can be if they get more outings like Wednesday’s 10-run outburst or even the four runs they put up on Sunday with an extra frame.Reinforcements are finally beginning to show up on the horizon, Cody Bellinger set to start his rehab assignment later this week. Giancarlo Stanton doesn’t have a definitive timeline yet, but he appears to be the second-closest starter while Aaron Judge remains in limbo. Can Bellinger return back at full strength, or will he continue his summer struggles? Will the deadline additions start to heat up, or have they added to the collective struggles on offense? Is Ben Rice about to turn a corner after his big two-run blast? If you have questions like these, or anything else on your mind, send ‘em in for a chance to be featured in our Yankees mailbag.Answers will run on Friday afternoon. All questions received by the night of August 20th will be considered. You can leave your submissions in the comment section below or by e-mail to pinstripealleyblog [at] gmail [dot] com.

Michigan Football’s race for WR3 continues to heat up
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN - APRIL 18: Travis Johnson #86 of the Blue Team runs the ball during the first half of the Michigan Wolverines Football Spring Game at Michigan Stadium on April 18, 2026 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Jaime Crawford/Getty Images for ONIT) | Getty Images for ONIT Fall camp is in full swing, as the Michigan Wolverines are less than three weeks away from the 2026 season opener. Position battles are continuing to take shape with practice heating up, and the race for WR3 appears to be a tight contest.Michigan wide receivers Andrew Marsh and J.J. Buchanan are considered the top targets, followed by Jaime Ffrench, Channing Goodwin, and true freshmen Travis Johnson and Salesi Moa. Now, it’s just a matter of who will step up and seize the opportunity. All four of them have dynamic skillsets that will allow them to see the field and make an impact this year, but it’s hard to tell as of today who will start when the Wolverines kick off the season against Western Michigan on Sept. 5.Michigan wide receivers coach Micah Simon explained what he’s looking for in the race for the final starting spot.“It’s just about being dependable and trustworthy, and who can block when they’re asked to block. Just being able to win against man-to-man, sit in zones, be a smart football player and make plays,” Simon told the media on Monday. “It’s a good problem to have.”Entering training camp, Ffrench was believed to be the frontrunner for WR3, but Johnson has been one of the standouts during fall camp. It certainly seems like he has a realistic opportunity to climb the depth chart before his freshman season begins.#Michigan WR Jaime Ffrench had high praise for former Top247 prospect and freshman WR Travis Johnson during today's media availability.Buy stock in the talented youngster. pic.twitter.com/aycHz1I24R— Brice Marich (@BriceMarich) August 13, 2026“He’s a fast and super athletic player,” Simon said of Johnson. “He has a basketball background, and you can really see it on the field with the way that he attacks the ball in the air and how he moves very fluidly. He’s shown great things thus far.”The former four-star recruit has impressed his coaches and teammates in recent weeks, from allegedly being the fastest player on the team to showcasing an elite catch radius. It’s difficult to predict of Johnson will start the season opener, but there’s no doubt he will eventually become an integral part of Michigan’s passing game. And it wouldn’t surprise anyone if that came sooner rather than later.Johnson isn’t the only freshman to jump out in fall practice, as Moa has turned some heads as well.“The growth that those two freshmen have had from spring to now is second to none,” Simon said. “The steps that they both made over the summer have been so awesome to see, and they’re continuing to get better each and every day.”Simon also said it’s “very realistic” to expect Johnson and Moa to make an instant impact this season.“We recruit to play guys as freshmen,” Simon said. “You don’t always have time to just bring a guy in and try to redshirt him and develop him for later, so I definitely see both of those guys being ready to go this year.”Despite not being talked about as much as the other receivers, Goodwin has also impressed the coaching staff and is very much in contention for WR3. Goodwin was sixth on the team with 148 receiving yards and 12 receptions in 2025.“The whole staff is seeing Goodwin for the first time in fall camp because he was out (with an injury) in the spring, so we’re seeing what he brings to the table,” Simon said. “He’s been awesome. He brings a veteran presence to a really young room.”The ongoing battle for WR3 will likely come down to the final week of fall camp, but the Wolverines are in a great spot with several explosive, hard-working and talented wide receivers to choose from.

Go woke, avoid going broke? New study shows that pro-DEI companies do fine
Companies that maintained their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives performed better than those that removed them in the face of anti-DEI threats from the Trump administration, according to new research reported by The Guardian last Friday. The research’s findings contradict right-wing claims that companies that “go woke, go broke.” The research — conducted by Jacob Grumbach, an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy — analyzed the stock market performance of 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the US (aka “the S&P 500”). Related These 12 companies didn’t back down from supporting Pride this year Trump’s anti-DEI executive orders, issued at the start of his presidency in 2025, directed federal agencies to contractually obligate contractors to certify that they neither have nor promote any DEI programs, which Trump claimed are an illegal and immoral violation of federal law. Furthermore, the order threatened legal action against corporations, large nonprofits, philanthropic foundations, professional associations, and institutions of higher education that have DEI-related initiatives. However, while social pressure campaigns, led by anti-DEI conservative activists like Robby Starbuck, successfully got some companies to end their DEI commitments — companies such as Harley-Davidson, Jack Daniels’ parent company Brown-Forman, Ford Motor Co., Lowe’s, Tractor Supply Co., John Deere, and Caterpillar Inc. — Grumbach noted that these companies may have ended these commitments because their leaders felt that the brands could not weather such political storms. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today However, numerous other companies stood by their DEI commitments, even after Trump’s threats and right-wing pressure campaigns, including Costco, Apple, Delta Air Lines, Microsoft, NFL, Cisco, Deutsche Bank, Patagonia, Coca-Cola, and Kroger. Grumbach told The Guardian that there’s “no perfect way” to measure whether a firm is pulling back its DEI policies. He tracked companies’ DEI policies by analyzing news coverage, pulling anti-DEI shareholder proposals and votes on those proposals, and using data from a watchdog activist group called DEI Watch. Grumbach found that not only did keeping DEI commitments ultimately not impact the companies’ financial performance, but that companies may have some leeway to continue performing well, even after resisting threatening government policies. “What happens when you don’t comply with that executive branch pressure in a moment of great fear in these civil society organizations?” Grumbach said. “This shows that large US corporations really do have leeway and the ability to sort of do noncompliance to executive branch pressure and end up fine.” The HRC Foundation’s Pride in the Marketplace 2026 consumer report found that 79.3% of LGBTQ+ adults hold favorable views of DEI efforts. Luigi Mangione’s state murder trial postponed indefinitely amid double jeopardy fight

(David Dee Delgado/Pool Photo via AP)2026-08-17T20:15:35Z NEW YORK (AP) — Luigi Mangione’s state murder trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which was slated to begin Sept. 8, has been postponed indefinitely as his lawyers seek to have the case thrown out on double jeopardy grounds following his guilty plea last week to federal charges.Judge Gregory Carro issued an order Monday canceling the trial and giving the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which is prosecuting the state case, until Oct. 9 to respond to the defense’s double jeopardy claims. A hearing will be held on Dec. 10, Carro said, about a week before Mangione is scheduled to be sentenced in the federal case.Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan federal court to a pair of stalking charges and admitted trailing Thompson to UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference and gunning him down outside a Manhattan hotel in 2024. Federal prosecutors said they would seek life in prison when Mangione is sentenced Dec. 18, though federal sentencing guidelines call for a term of 24 to 30 years. “On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,” Mangione said.Immediately after his plea, Mangione’s lawyers filed paperwork seeking to have the state case thrown out on double jeopardy and due process grounds. They described him as a “pawn in parallel prosecutions” and accused state and federal prosecutors of “trying to punish him twice for the exact conduct.” Mangione has pleaded not guilty in the state case, which also carries the possibility of a life sentence. Read More Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said in a statement that it would fight efforts to end the state case, in part because Mangione’s federal sentence isn’t yet known.Compared with federal law and that of other states, New York has uncommonly strong protections for defendants facing multiple prosecutions. A state prosecution can be barred if a federal case involving the same course of conduct or criminal transaction ends in a guilty plea or if a jury is sworn.Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges that accused him of traveling across state lines by bus to stalk and kill Thompson and using means such as a cellphone, the internet, interstate highways and staying at a hostel that serves out-of-state customers while planning and carrying out the attack. “The full range of conduct that comprises the stalking offense is coterminous with the conduct committed as part of the murder offense,” Mangione’s lawyers wrote in their double jeopardy filing. That he traveled from out of state “to be at the crime scene at the time of the shooting does nothing to eliminate the stalking of Mr. Thompson from the acts constituting his murder,” Mangione’s lawyers wrote. “They are all part of the same criminal incident or criminal transaction.”Bragg’s office contends that the state charges, including murder and firearms offenses, involve different legal elements and criminal conduct. In a letter last month, Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann objected to the possibility of a federal guilty plea wiping out the state case.Any guilty plea, Seidemann wrote, “must account for the seriousness of defendant’s offenses” and for the state’s interests in prosecuting Mangione, “including the sanctity of life principle that underpins the state homicide charges.” MICHAEL R. Supreme Court asked to review Texas law requiring the Ten Commandments in public schools
Students work under Ten Commandments and Bill of Rights posters on display in a classroom at Lehman High School in Kyle, Texas, Oct. 16, 2025. (AP Photo/Eric Gay,File)2026-08-17T20:06:34Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Civil rights advocates on Monday said they asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Texas law requiring public schools to display the Ten Commandments, teeing up a case that could set a new national standard for the limits of state-sponsored religious expression in classrooms.Over two dozen Texas families represented by the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups petitioned the nation’s highest court to overturn a split decision in April by the conservative-leaning 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The New Orleans-based appeals court’s 9-8 ruling upheld the Texas law, which requires public school classrooms to display a state-selected version of the Ten Commandments drawn from the King James Bible. In their Supreme Court brief, the families’ attorneys argue that the law violates basic First Amendment principles governing the separation of church and state. “The question of whether a state may impose scripture on impressionable, captive-audience children — for nearly every hour of every school day, for up to (13) years — implicates the most fundamental guarantees of the First Amendment and our Nation’s highest ideals,” they wrote. The 5th Circuit reversed a lower federal court ruling that had blocked approximately a dozen Texas school districts from putting up the posters. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed the law, which took effect last September. Because Texas’ law only requires districts to hang the Ten Commandments if they are donated, conservative groups and individuals began dropping off boxes of posters at campuses across the state as the school year began last year. Read More “No child is made to recite the Commandments, believe them, or affirm their divine origin,” the 5th Circuit’s ruling says. The 5th Circuit also ruled in February that Louisiana can enforce its own law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in classrooms. Republicans in the South have been leading the way in putting the Ten Commandments in classrooms. Louisiana became the first state to pass a requirement in 2024, followed by Arkansas and Texas. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed a similar law earlier this year. ___Stengle contributed to this report from Dallas.

US school vaccination rates inch down yet again and exemptions reach record high
Dr. Jessica Early holds a vial of the combination measles, mumps and rubella vaccine at Prisma Health Pediatrics in Greer, S.C., March 18, 2026. (AP Photo/Mary Conlon, File)2026-08-17T20:04:57Z NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. kindergarten vaccination rates inched down again last year and the share of children with exemptions rose to an all-time high, according to federal data posted Monday. The fraction of kids exempted from vaccine requirements rose to 4.2%, up from 3.6% the year before. That’s an estimated 155,000 children nationally during the 2025-2026 school year. It’s the fourth consecutive year that the national average exemption rate has reached a new record, and the vast majority are parents withholding shots for nonmedical reasons. Exemptions increased in 41 states and the District of Columbia. Experts point to turmoil caused by federal health officials. U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was a leading voice in the antivaccine movement before President Donald Trump put him in charge of federal health agencies. In the last 18 months, Kennedy and other federal officials have repeatedly tried to revise and reduce childhood vaccination guidance. Earlier this month, Trump called for revamped childhood vaccination recommendations that promote his discredited theory that childhood shots should be spaced out into separate medical visits.“The root cause of this is primarily because there’s so much chaos and confusion in vaccination recommendation systems in the last year or so,” said Dr. James Campbell, of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Vaccination rates fell for many diseasesThe CDC reported that 92.4% of 2025-26 kindergarteners got their required measles-mumps-rubella shots, down slightly from the previous year. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the vaccination rate was 95% — the level that makes it unlikely that a single infection will spark a disease cluster or outbreak.Vaccination rates also fell for polio, for the combination shot against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, and for the first dose of the vaccine against chickenpox. The rate held steady for protection against hepatitis B. But that’s a vaccine given shortly after birth, and it will take a few years before recent federal efforts to upend infant hepatitis B vaccine recommendations would appear in the vaccination rates of kindergartners, Campbell said. The vaccination numbers were posted as the U.S. experiences its worst year for measles since 1991. Read More The numbers indicate that more than a quarter of a million children entering kindergarten are susceptible to measles, said Campbell, a University of Maryland researcher who is chair of the AAP’s infectious diseases committee. Those at-risk kids are not evenly distributed — concentrations of unvaccinated children are higher in some places than others, which helps explain why measles waves vary in intensity. This is when public health officials typically tout vaccines’ benefitsThe CDC data is coming out as school and health officials across the country are encouraging parents to get their children vaccinated as the school year starts.“Back-to-school season is an important reminder that protecting our children’s health is both a shared responsibility and a shared goal,” North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai said in a statement. “Vaccines help keep our children and teens healthy and in the classroom.” In the past, the CDC has released the vaccination coverage data in its flagship publication, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. CDC officials usually speak to the trends and stress the importance of vaccinations. But since the Trump administration took office early last year, the agency has posted the data online. This year, the agency issued a three-sentence statement that noted a small decline in vaccination coverage among children entering kindergarten and said: “CDC continues to encourage parents to discuss vaccination options with their doctors.”Medical exemption rates are steadyPublic health officials focus on vaccination rates for kindergartners because schools can be cauldrons for germs and launching pads for community outbreaks. For years, those rates were high, thanks largely to school attendance mandates that required key vaccinations. All U.S. states and territories require that children attending childcare centers and schools be vaccinated against a number of diseases, including measles, mumps, polio, tetanus, whooping cough and chickenpox. All states allow exemptions for children with medical conditions that prevent them from receiving certain vaccines. And most also permit exemptions for religious or other nonmedical reasons. In the last decade, the percentage of kindergartners with medical exemptions has held steady, at about 0.2%. But the percentage with nonmedical exemptions has risen.According to the CDC data, 17.5% of kindergartners had an exemption to one or more vaccines in Idaho in the last school year. But fewer than 0.5% did in Connecticut.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Bids start for long-term flood fix feds say will be fast and cheap — but they don’t know what it is
Officials hold a press conference to explain a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan to seek proposals for a long-term glacial flooding solution in Juneau, Alaska, Friday, Aug. 14, 2026. (Mark Sabbatini/Juneau Independent via AP)2026-08-17T19:50:14Z Competitors are now being sought to design a long-term glacial flooding solution the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says will be built faster and cheaper than previous proposals — but they don’t know what the project is.The intent is to select a project and industry partner for it by the end of the year, said Army Corps Brig. Gen. Clete Goetz during a press briefing Friday. He said the process will involve “a series of what we call pitch briefings” that he compared to the reality TV show “Shark Tank.”“We don’t have a price tag because we don’t know yet what it is that we’re building and how it will be built,” he said. But U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, participating in the press event remotely, declared, “We’ve got innovative, creative approaches to this that can make it much faster and much cheaper.”Similar words were used by Goetz and other participants in the briefing that included Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and local municipal and tribal leaders — and by officials in two previous press events where specifics of the project were lacking. A Request for Qualifications published Friday asks bidders to submit plans for a project that keeps Suicide Basin from rising above 1,100 feet and limits flood discharges to 1,000 cubic feet per second. The basin reached a height of about 1,345 feet this year before a release occurred and HESCO barriers along the river are designed to handle a release of 63,500 cubic feet per second.Goetz, reiterating comments from previous press events, said the new process will invoke President Donald Trump’s “Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork” initiative, the declared intentions of which are to shorten permitting timelines and cut administrative red tape for Army Corps projects. Critics have questioned if the intent is to bypass environmental review of Corps’ projects. Army Corps and officials have previously stated the decade-long timeline for a long-term solution is due to Suicide Basin being on U.S. Forest Service Land, which has specific development criteria, as well as taking the time necessary to ensure whatever is done with the basin’s water doesn’t have unintended and destructive impacts downstream. Read More Sullivan on Friday said the new approach is an “incredibly creative proposal that’s all about speed,” adding it’s “indicative of the leadership that’s happening from the top.” Goetz was asked Friday how officials can claim the project will be cheaper and faster without knowing its specifics, and why such an approach should be trusted as safe. “We’re not taking shots in the dark and hoping that this will work,” Goetz said. “There will be a design here associated with this and we’ll do the appropriate analysis, and you know it will work because we’re going to address the conditions in Suicide Basin that lead to this.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. He noted that while the Army Corps has drafted a set of medium-term solutions that were being evaluated by local officials, including a steel wall that could cost up to $1.5 billion, those have been shelved in favor of the new long-term plans.Officials discussing plans for the RFQ in recent weeks have often mentioned local mining companies as a prospective partner, noting their expertise in drilling and tunneling mountains in the area. One mining official has previously proposed a traditional drill-and-blast drainage tunnel for the basin that he claims will be quick and cost half as much as a “lake tap” solution the Army Corps at one point called its preferred solution. The Army Corps also stated a lake tap could cost up to $1 billion and take more than a decade to complete. Many residents in flood risk areas, as well as some public officials, have stated they consider that too costly and too long a wait given the problems posed by major floods that have occurred annually for the past years. The RFQ published Friday is for an “Emergency Water Conveyance Prototype.” The project requirements in a 13-page program solicitation consist of one long paragraph that defines goals rather than how to fulfill them.“Develop and demonstrate a proof of concept for, and design and construct, a new EWCP to protect the Mendenhall Valley, Juneau, Alaska associated with the severe and escalating flood hazard from GLOFs originating in Suicide Basin,” the requirements state. “The intent of this project is to prevent water levels in Suicide Basin from reaching an elevation sufficient to produce enough hydraulic pressure against Mendenhall Glacier to initiate a GLOF event. The EWCP shall prevent water levels in the Suicide Basin GDL from rising above an elevation of 1,100 feet, NAVD88 while safely managing peak discharge rates of approximately 1,000 cubic feet per second (CFS) to protect downstream communities.” An “industry day” to brief interested bidders is scheduled next Friday and the deadline to submit proposals is Sept. 4, Goetz said. Pitch presentations are tentatively scheduled Sept. 28-30, a preferred bidder selected Oct. 7 and an award agreement on a final project signed by Dec. 11.“We’ll receive white papers from industry with their technical approach, and we’ll hold a series of what we call pitch briefings,” Goetz said. “If you’ve seen the show ‘Shark Tank,’ think that, where we’ll have those meetings with industry and from there we’ll select the best qualified to form an agreement with to design this.” Lake tap not off the table, officials sayMurkowski saw the glacial outburst release from above on Wednesday afternoon. That morning she sat down with the Army Corps team present in Juneau, as well as emergency management leaders from the City and Borough of Juneau and the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska’s public safety team. During the flyover of the Mendenhall Glacier, she said she learned about the community adjusting to around five miles of HESCO barriers stretching along the Mendenhall River and an earthen berm constructed near Back Loop Road this year. She said she also took in just how quickly the water released.“We saw it in real time. You can see the hole in the ice at the base, the toe of the glacier, where it is flowing through,” Murkowski said. “And we saw it first on our way up the glacier, and you could see the current. But 25 minutes after our flight, going back over the same path, you could see how the volume of water had increased in just that time period.”Murkowski said it’s important for Juneau residents to understand how impressed she is with the collaborative effort between the Corps and the city to keep properties as safe as possible in the short-term approach.“But we’re also thinking about the longer term and what that is going to mean,” she said. “This is where I really appreciate the vision of the Corps in saying, ‘We’re not just going to treat this as any Corps project that’s going to take a decade and millions and millions of dollars to advance.’”José Sánchez, director of engineering and business for the Corps’ Pacific Ocean Division, said the urgency of the situation requires out-of-the-box thinking. He said this thought process applies not only to what kind of solution is sought, but also the ways it is acquired, which is why the Corps is inviting industries to submit concepts. He said the flyover provided scale for engineers to realize how difficult a long-term solution could be.Sánchez said they aren’t pinpointing a lake tunnel solution at this time, but the approach will focus on maintaining a certain water level in the basin to avoid downstream flooding.“That’s all we’re saying because we want all ideas to be brought on the table,” he said during a press briefing following the helicopter ride. Murkowski said since her last visit to the capital city in June, she has seen the Corps do “a 180 in terms of its level of interest, its level of commitment, its level of engagement, and not just here within the Alaska division, but elevated all the way up to the top.”She said she is advocating for the Corps to bore a tunnel through Bullard Mountain to drain Suicide Basin.Sánchez said while the “lake tap” isn’t being announced as the chosen long-term solution, the work the Corps has completed is still being taken into consideration. A lake tap solution was selected as a preferred long-term solution by the Forest Service, CBJ and Tlingit and Haida last December, with the Corps reaffirming it was the front-runner in March.“We are going to be working on what we have already investigated and we have already learned from the efforts that started even before December of last year,” Sánchez said. “So all that engineering and all of that discussion we had at that time with the federal partners, with the city, with private entities as well — we even have private contractors involved in that — we’re going to use that information to progress us in a faster manner.”The senator and Sánchez said the 35 Army Corps personnel on the ground during this year’s flood — as well as the federal agency’s largest concentration of pumps being set up in Juneau to mitigate seepage by HESCO barriers — proves the project is being treated with importance.“Our plan is to move ahead with all the authorities that we have in place, and also plan on future authorities that we may have on this project,” Sánchez said. “We’re not slowing down.”Murkowski said the path of soliciting industry proposals under emergency authorities is an aggressive approach for expediting a long-term fix and the Water Resources Development Act is another avenue. The bill aims to fast-track a permanent engineering solution by speeding up Army Corps paperwork. It has yet to pass the U.S. Senate and House. Congress must also appropriate funding.“It is hard on the people in this community. It’s hard for those that are waiting,” Murkowski said. She also visited the unprotected neighborhood of View Drive during her visit Wednesday. Following the 14.7-foot river crest Thursday afternoon, resident Emily Rosenfeld wondered if the unannounced solution would apply to her street.“The intent of us is to be able to manage the water out of the Suicide Basin in a way that it will not impact the residents downstream,” Sánchez said at the Wednesday press briefing. “So that includes everybody downstream.”___This story was originally published by Juneau Independent and distributed through a partnership with The Associated Press.

😱Up for sale again? Todd Boehly wants out of ChelseaTodd Boehly and Mark Walter are in talks to sell their stake in Chelsea FC to Clearlake Capital, the club’s majority shareholder. The negotiations value the London club at more than £5 billion, driven by a lack of strategic alignment between the parties.Differences over the management model and stadiumDisagreements over the club’s vision and transfer model have strained the relationship with Behdad Eghbali, co-owner and a key figure at Clearlake. Adding to this is the lack of consensus over the future of the stadium, where Boehly is focused on maximizing revenue, taking inspiration from multi-purpose venues like Tottenham Hotspur’s.A transfer accelerated by external pressureThe agreement предусматриes that Boehly will step down as chairman at the end of the season. However, the talks have taken on greater urgency due to the legal pressures Walter is facing in the United States. If the transaction goes through, Clearlake will take full control of the Blues’ sporting and financial project. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. He had no problems during the session and passed the fitness test. After training, he signed autographs for waiting fans outside. Musiala seemed completely happy and recovered well from Saturday’s scare.Musiala did not make the team picture as he and Bryan Zaragoza were the only two players not to be a part of it: Jamal Musiala and Bryan Zaragoza are the only players missing from the team presentation at the Campus pic.twitter.com/YilpbgzqTr— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) August 17, 2026Konrad Laimer, who left the victory over RB Leipzig with a knock, was back working out as well. Laimer was asked about his status and downplayed the seriousness. “Everything’s fine, I took a knock — but it’s not too bad, should be back soon,” Laimer stated (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). UCLA's starting offense beginning to take shape
UCLA running back Wayne Knight carries the ball during practice on Friday, August 7, 2026.LOS ANGELES — After a week of practices in Irvine, the UCLA football team has returned to campus to resume their regular operations. Today’s practice is also their final one available to the media before Wednesday’s Media Day.One of the biggest questions to begin the Bob Chesney era is how the first-year head coach is managing an influx of talent in Westwood. The Bruins roster 63 new players this season, 45 of whom are transfers, and added elite pieces to an offense that showed flashes but struggled to find a consistent footing last year. As fall camp continues, we’re getting more clarity on who’s solidifying a spot in the starting offensive group. Here’s a look at who has been standing out in the first unit:QB: Nico IamaleavaAs soon as he announced his return to UCLA for his redshirt junior season, Iamaleava left very little drama for the Bruins’ starting quarterback competition. He was the team’s biggest offensive bright spot, throwing for nearly 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns while also leading the team with 505 rushing yards. Chesney has spoken positively about Iamaleava throughout their time together in Westwood, and this continued after Monday’s practice.“His command of the offense is really good right now,” Chesney said. “He’s doing a really good job of getting us into the right place. I think he’s doing a really good job of seeing the defense — and this defense is complicated and holds their shell as long as they can. And he’s doing a really good job of identifying those things. Just got to continue to connect with the receivers right now, and that’s one thing that he continues to grow with. We’re not letting him run right now, but as we all know, that’s a big part of his game.”RB1: Anthony WoodsWoods surged in the running back room early last season despite being pegged as the third string coming out of camp. The fifth-year back took some of the first snaps with the first unit today. Woods led UCLA last season with 541 all-purpose yards, including 294 rushing yards on 63 carries. RB2: Wayne KnightThe 2025 Sun Belt Championship MVP followed Chesney to Westwood this season after becoming James Madison’s single-season all-purpose yards record holder, pushing out a staggering 2,039 yards en route to the Dukes’ CFP berth last season. Knight’s addition makes an already talented running back room even more versatile, and Chesney is most impressed by how they’ve competed throughout fall camp. “They can protect. They are viable receiving options out of the backfield. They see whatever the run scheme is very, very well,” Chesney said. “They’re decisive to react. Fast decisions get fast results, and I think they’ve done a really good job of those things. “And then in the end, they can run away from you, but they legitimately seek violence. That’s the thing to me that I’ve been most impressed with with those guys, is that when it’s time to put their pads down, they ain’t afraid to do it, and that bodes well for this offense.”WR1: Brian Rowe Jr.Rowe made his way to UCLA this offseason from South Carolina, where he put up 149 receiving yards on 19 receptions in 11 games last season. The 5-foot-11 wideout has spent much of fall camp with the first unit. WR2: Landon EllisIn one season under Chesney with the Dukes, Ellis made All-Sun Belt Third team and racked up 624 yards through the air and five touchdowns on 36 receptions. We saw Ellis take reps with the first team at today’s practice and was targeted multiple times by Iamaleava in live reps. Slot WR: Mikey Matthews Matthews reclaims his position in the slot after his first season with the Bruins. In 12 games, Matthews totaled 348 receiving yards and 33 receptions, which ranked second on the team, and caught two touchdowns last season. As seen all throughout camp, Matthews is also retaining his position as UCLA’s primary punt returner. In 2025 he returned nine punts for just 47 yards.TE: Josh PhiferAnother transfer who followed Chesney from James Madison to UCLA, Phifer took most of the first-string reps during Monday’s practice. On the unit’s second play and first passing play, he slipped out from a blocking position to catch a short throw from Iamaleava and turn upfield.Phifer spent three seasons at James Madison, but his offensive workload was limited, as he has just six catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns in his college career so far. His presence on the first team suggests he could be taking on a much bigger role this season.Offensive LineThe front five, according to Chesney, is the offensive group that has bolstered the most depth through camp. Plenty of names, both new and returning, have taken reps with the first unit, but here’s what the starting group looked like today:LT: Jensen Somerville, LG: Eugene Brooks, C: Derek Osman, RG: Carter Sweazie, RT: Hall SchmidtChesney noted that tackle Jordan Davis and center Riley Robell, who routinely ran with the first unit earlier in camp, are dealing with minor injuries. Davis is already in a helmet and pads and is being eased back into things. Robell is dealing with a sprained MCL, a matter that Chesney says he can “come back from in a week or so.”On the offensive line overall, Chesney said, “they look good, man. They’re getting better. They continue to get better every single day, and we’re starting to find some depth in there … we just need for those guys to keep battling like they do. And overall, I think they’re growing as a unit here in a really positive way.”Returning starters like tackle Julian Armella and center Sam Yoon find themselves battling to retain their starting gigs. Chesney feels that further speaks to the quality of depth in the position group. “That’s what it should be, right? In every single position,” he said. “I always think back to Tom Brady. He legitimately thought every time he’d step foot on that field, ‘If I don’t play well this week, I’m not going to be able to start next week.’ And that’s the mentality he took into it, and that’s the mentality I want our team to have: is that there never is a moment where, ‘I’ve arrived and I’ve just earned this and it’s mine forever.’ That’s not the case, and I think that our guys understand that, so they got to battle every single day.”Other Notable PlayersRunning back Jaivian Thomas has received first-team reps at various times during both spring and fall practices but did not practice today. Wide receiver Aidan Mizell has turned heads with his play and earned praise from Chesney, but he also wasn’t visible on the field on Monday. With two weeks of camp remaining, the offense is taking major strides in becoming the force many expect it to be in the Chesney era. The first real test comes in 19 days when UCLA takes on Cal in Berkeley for its season opener, on Saturday, Sept. 5.
