LinkAPNEWS.COMAs workplace surveillance grows, experts say it’s good to know the ways your employer is watching(AP Illustration / Peter Hamlin)2026-08-20T16:55:55Z NEW YORK (AP) — College administrators read an adjunct professor’s comments to students on personal essays. Managers told a pharmacist to spend less time with patients after tracking the number and length of her appointments. Scanners on a warehouse conveyor belt monitored the pace of workers to ensure they inspected hundreds of items per hour.Thousands of employers are keeping tabs on the whereabouts, productivity and communications of workers with technology that was adopted widely during the coronavirus pandemic. A vast array of digital tools still are being used to track locations, collect data on task completion rates, and access work-issued smartphone and laptop cameras, raising concerns about how much privacy employees have relinquished, even in their own homes.Employers have always monitored workers, but recent advances in artificial intelligence and data science enable them to create extensive data sets or “dossiers” that can be used to punish workers or attempt to predict employee behavior, said Wilneida Negrón, director of research and policy at Coworker, a nonprofit that helps workers organize to improve working conditions. This article is part of AP’s Be Well coverage, focusing on wellness, fitness, diet and mental health. Read more Be Well. “Oftentimes, the workers with the least amount of power in the labor markets tend to be testing grounds for some of the more intrusive forms of data collection,” Negrón said. Some of the most common workplace monitoring programs have shared names, email addresses and other personal worker data with hundreds of outside data brokers and technology companies without clearly disclosing the practice, according to an investigation by Vanderbilt University, Northeastern University and the University of California at Berkeley.Data privacy experts and workers who say they’ve been closely monitored spoke with The Associated Press about what they see as the risks of employer surveillance and the steps employees can take to protect their personal information. Team up with like-minded colleagues to advocate for yourselfPharmacist Lannie Duong’s job at a medical clinic involved meeting with patients who had chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. She reviewed their medical histories, blood work and symptoms, and adjusted their medications. She frequently enlisted interpreters to help her communicate with patients who had limited English language skills. Duong said her employer tracked the length of her phone calls and appointments, and in performance evaluations questioned why she took so long with each patient. Read More “Everything was counted. How many minutes you’re on the phone. The minutiae of it was ridiculous,” Duong said. “We’re just tasked to do what feels like the impossible.” Under what she described as unrelenting pressure, Duong felt “not trusted, not appreciated, almost completely hopeless. It was so depressing.” She eventually went on medical leave and began volunteering with other pharmacists to organize a union. “I spoke up, hoping others would voice their concerns as well, but that didn’t really pan out,” Duong said. She says her employment was terminated after the medical leave. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Many of the employers using surveillance tools do so transparently and engage employee boards in reviewing how the tools are used, Negrón said. But there are also employers tracking, ranking and scoring employees in ways that are not transparent to workers, she said.“Workers are going to have to come together because the forces of centralizing this kind of tracking and monitoring are moving too fast,” Negrón said. Find out what kind of data your employer is collecting about youAs awareness about surveillance tools grows, some workers are pushing back on tools that track how long it takes to fulfill tasks, saying such monitoring contributes to injuries, and questioning what personal information is being collected and how it’s being used, said Hayley Tsukayama, director of state affairs at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on digital privacy.“Unfortunately, if you are on a machine that’s been issued by your workplace, you should expect that there’s some type of monitoring,” Tsukayama said.Researching data collection and surveillance trends in your industry is a good idea, according to Negrón. Without that knowledge, workers may find themselves unprepared when confronted with information unearthed during surveillance. While teaching a college writing class, Arianna Anaya discovered that an administrator was reading the papers her students uploaded to the school’s learning management software and the comments Anaya made on the work. The students often wrote about intimate topics, including abuse, eating disorders and family trauma. “The school essentially used the online learning system to allow administrators and staff to read student work that was often immensely private and personal, something we were specifically told students should not know about,” Anaya said. A colleague who printed out the comments criticized the casual tone Anaya used with students and accused her of not sticking to the course syllabus. A few months later, Anaya’s teaching contract wasn’t renewed, although she doesn’t know the exact reason.“It made me quite paranoid,” Anaya said. “It made me feel less safe in the world.” Check state laws to see what’s required of employersSome states, including New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Maine, require employers to notify workers if they’re being monitored. Maine’s law goes further, prohibiting visual monitoring in employees’ homes or personal vehicles unless that kind of observation is required for the duties of the job, said Edward Halle, a privacy and AI compliance manager. “The question becomes, what does the law mean by ‘the duties of the job’?” Halle said. “A telehealth nurse needs a camera; the camera is the job. A productivity webcam bolted onto ordinary desk work almost certainly isn’t. Where that line falls is the first thing the Department of Labor will be asked to sort out.”If you work in a state without a notification requirement, it’s difficult to find out if an employer is using technology to monitor your performance. To raise the issue with managers, Tsukayama suggests coordinating with a union. If that’s not an option and you’re asking managers individually, approach the topic cautiously and take a curious tone, she advised. You could say you’ve noticed something on the computer and have questions, such as “How is this information being used within the company? How might it get out of the company?” Tsukayama said. One place to start is asking what specific employee data your organization collects, said Aiha Nguyen, director of the Labor Futures Initiative at Data & Society, a nonprofit institute studying the impacts of technology. If your manager doesn’t know, the information technology department may have answers, since the people working there often are the ones turning on the features, Nguyen said. Some common software programs such as Microsoft Office and Zoom have tools that can be used for tracking worker productivity, but the tracking features aren’t always activated. Knowing whether those tracking features are turned on can be difficult, because they’re built into the programs, Nguyen said.“It’s automatic. It’s considered something that employers have been able to say, ‘This is necessary for work. You have to use these tools,’” she said. To help safeguard personal information, don’t use work devices to handle family matters or sensitive personal information such as medical conditions, experts advise.“I think most people know that,” Nguyen said. “But it can become tedious to switch between phones, or people don’t really think it’s that harmful. ... You don’t want to potentially put yourself at risk.”___Share your stories and questions about workplace wellness at [email protected]. LinkAPNEWS.COMUS ramps up Cuba sanctions and detentions of Americans returning from the islandSecretary of State Marco Rubio arrives with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, not shown, to the Treaty Room at the State Department, Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Tierney L. Cross)2026-08-20T17:20:48Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s administration is increasing pressure on Cuba by imposing more economic penalties on industries in the heavily sanctioned socialist country and broadening enforcement of laws that bar Americans who visit the island from dealings with government-owned or -affiliated businesses. The Treasury and State departments are announcing Thursday that they are leveling new penalties against 10 state-owned mining, metal and construction companies along with the leadership of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, or ICAP. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the institute is responsible for sponsoring “a vast subversive network in the United States aimed at identifying, cultivating, and radicalizing” Americans.“Just days ago, the regime attempted to use Communist kingpin and despot Fidel Castro’s 100th birthday to reinvigorate this subversive network, ferrying a new brigade of international sympathizers to Havana to network with regime officials,” Rubio said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press ahead of its official release. “The Trump Administration will not stand by while a hostile foreign power seeks to exploit our freedoms — none of which are afforded to its people — by misleading and corrupting American citizens with lies, spy tradecraft, and other malfeasance as part of the regime’s raison d’être of exporting Marxism, racial resentment, and Communist violence across the world,” Rubio said.Trump’s Republican administration has steadily ratcheted up pressure on Havana, threatening it with potential military intervention even when mired in a conflict against Iran, while also boosting economic sanctions designed to cut off funding for the Cuban government. An oil blockade that the U.S. imposed on Cuba after the American military raid that ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, whose country provided Cuba with free oil, has plunged the already economically crippled island into full-blown crisis. Cuba routinely denounces U.S. sanctions and the decadeslong embargo it has imposed on the island, accusing multiple administrations of unfairly targeting a poor nation and its people merely for ideological differences and its proximity to the United States. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 65 Visualizações 0 Anterior

LinkAPNEWS.COMThe playbook for college sports revenue is expanding from logos and fees to entertainment districtsTennessee runs onto the field before an NCAA college football game against Georgia, Sept. 13, 2025, in Knoxville, Tenn. (AP Photo/George Walker IV, File)2026-08-20T17:18:05Z KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — You’ve heard about the patches coming soon to a college football jersey near you. You’ve seen the corporate logos cropping up on football fields from South Carolina to the University of Washington. Talent fees on season tickets, league-level deals with the likes of PayPal, naming rights revenue not just for a stadium but for the playing field within the stadium. All of this is now standard fare for universities scrambling to keep up in the sprawling and expensive industry that college athletics has become. For the latest year available (2024), the 352 Division I members of the NCAA alone reported generating nearly $20.5 billion in revenue. The problem is that, on average, most Bowl Subdivision athletic departments at the top of the food chain also reported losing money.Finding fresh dollars is critically paramount for departments becoming more creative by the day. Universities are not just slapping corporate logos on uniforms and facilities but building entertainment districts that can be lucrative far beyond game days. They are executing mind-boggling CFO-level reorganizations that are no longer unusual.“There’s never been a closer relationship between resources and competitive success as there is right now,” Tennessee athletic director Danny White said before adding: “This is the game that we’re in.” The expenses and spending are piling upIt used to be that athletic departments spent heavily on facilities and coaching staffs to land recruits wanting the best in their pursuit of a pro contract. That’s still going on, of course, but athletes now are getting far more than ever before.Five years ago, the NCAA cleared the way for athletes to earn endorsement money through name, image and likeness deals. That spelled the end of the amateurism model so familiar for decades in college sports. It also started a flood of spending that has only grown more chaotic with the $2.8 billion House settlement that allowed each school to spend more than $20 millon of its own money — each year — on its athletes alongside third-party NIL deals that are under discussion all the way to Capitol Hill. Read More Justifying the spending requires new thinkingRaising prices and fees for fans is a bit easier when the game-day experience is special. That is why Tennessee will keep building after wrapping up a $337 million renovation of Neyland Stadium. Up next is a step familiar to fans of pro teams like the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs: Construction of an entertainment district, a $280 million public-private development along the Tennessee River between Neyland and the basketball arena. A condo-hotel will offer a view into Neyland with shops, restaurants and an area for concerts or game-day events. Jeff Schemmel, president of College Sports Solutions, said he has believed in the need for athletic departments to create public-private partnerships for a long time to use one of their biggest assets — land and property — to produce money in a new way. It’s not multimedia rights,” said Schemmel, a former athletic director at San Diego State and a former chair of the NCAA’s Division I Championship and Sports Management Cabinet. “It’s new revenue, and I think most presidents and most athletic directors are willing to share that new revenue piece because it’s brand new,” he said. “If I were sitting in the chair again like I used to, I think I would certainly look at developing those kinds of public-private partnerships in areas completely outside of athletics.” Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard is often credited with originating mixed-use districts on a college campus to go beyond simple fund-raising. Iowa State announced its retail, office and entertainment development between Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum in 2022 with a completion date of fall 2027.“I anticipate that you’re going to probably see the creation of more mixed-use facility developments in college sports in the next 10 years than there will ever be in the history of sports,” said Patrick Rishe, director of the sports business program at Washington University in St. Louis. Washington gets very creative in search for moneyWhen Washington joined the Big Ten with Oregon, UCLA and USC in 2024, the Huskies expected to receive only a half-share of the conference’s media rights revenue until 2030. A full share was nearly $79.9 million during the 2025 fiscal year. But the Huskies haven’t generated net revenue since the 2023 fiscal year and, according to the Seattle Times, are projected to have a $16 million cash flow deficit in fiscal 2027. Pat Chun, hired as Washington’s athletic director in 2024, said the university has taken loans on future TV revenue from both the Big Ten and the Fox News Network. In the meantime, Washington is looking to raise new revenue and cut costs. The Huskies are looking at a uniform patch deal and Chun has the support of university president Robert J. Jones trying to gin up revenue. “We believe we’re well positioned for the future,” Chun said. “Obviously, today in college sports it takes resources to do that. We’re working on an increase in what our resources are and managing what our spending is.” Potential risk of turning fans off with higher pricesTennessee was among the first to tack a NIL fee onto tickets specifically to help pay its athletes in September 2024, which hasn’t hurt demand. The 102,000-seat football stadium is sold out again and the school says there are 29,000 people on the waiting list. Basketball, softball, baseball? Sold out for three straight seasons.“We got a lot of eyeballs,” White said. “We’re in a market that we’re not competing with pro sports, and we got a million people that live in Knoxville.”Fans complain on social media about high ticket prices, but White said he thinks those are mostly people buying tickets on secondary markets he doesn’t control. “People have been wondering, thinking, ‘Oh, there’s got to be a ceiling somewhere.’ But, we haven’t seen that yet,” said Alan Morse, director of the Sport Marketing Research Institute at Northern Colorado.Patches, licensing deals and concertsTeams already have patches on uniforms promoting apparel deals with Nike or adidas along with their conference affiliation. Then the NCAA approved adding jersey patches in January, and the rush to make deals to do just that has been strong. Kansas, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt are among the schools putting business logos on uniforms in a rush for corporate cash that NASCAR pioneered long ago. Ohio State and Notre Dame reportedly landed patch deals totaling around $30 million. Memphis agreed to put hometown FedEx’s logo in the end zones of the Liberty Bowl last August, then added a FedEx patch to uniforms in April. The Big 12 has a deal with Monster Energy that will link up their logos. The conference also has an agreement with the Big Ten that allows schools to pay their players through PayPal.One benefit for fans who can’t get enough of their alma mater’s stadium: Concerts and other events. Texas A&M used Kyle Field in June to host Argentina and Honduras in a friendly soccer match before the World Cup while Iowa State has had concerts at Jack Trice Stadium featuring country star Luke Combs, Post Malone and Jelly Roll. Morgan Wallen performed on back-to-back nights this summer at Michigan Stadium. Athletic departments getting down to businessSome universities are hiring people as assistant athletic directors simply to focus on generating revenue. Louisville started up a nonprofit arm while rival Kentucky in April 2025 converted its athletic department into a limited-liability holding company called Champions Blue LLC. That change is designed to help Kentucky have more flexibility in identifying and tapping new sources of revenue. When Kentucky hired J Batt as its new athletic director, the university mentioned his role as chief executive officer of Champions Blue first in its announcement. The Big 12 went a different way in April as the first known conference in major college sports to reach a league-wide deal with a private capital group. Each Big 12 school will have access to a line of credit up to $30 million each, paid back with interest of course. “Each conference, each school, has to do what’s in their best interest,” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said.___Destin contributed to this story from Seattle. ___Sign up for Top 25 poll alerts here. (AP Photo/Czarek Sokolowski, File)2026-08-20T17:21:23Z ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — A Croatian judge on Thursday ordered the detention of a Ukrainian man who is wanted in Germany in connection with the 2022 undersea explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines, his lawyer said. The man was arrested on a European warrant in the northern Croatian town of Pula on Wednesday. He was questioned on Thursday by prosecutors who requested the detention pending extradition proceedings, the state HRT television reported. The man’s lawyer, Matija Milos, said that they would appeal the detention order, the HINA news agency reported. It wasn’t immediately clear how long the extradition proceedings in Croatia could last. The German prosecutors have said that the suspect was a “trained scuba diver” who belonged to a group of people who “planted explosives” on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea near the Danish island of Bornholm. The undersea explosions on Sept. 26, 2022, damaged the pipelines, which had been built to carry Russian natural gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea. The damage added to tensions over the Russia-Ukraine war as European countries moved to wean themselves off Russian energy sources after the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor on Feb. 24, 2022.The German prosecutor’s office identified the suspect only as Vladimir Z. A spokesperson, however, confirmed to The Associated Press that it was the same man who was arrested in Poland last year, but was later released when a Polish court refused to extradite him to Germany. Polish authorities identified him as Volodymyr Zhuravlov. Poland has long opposed the Nord Stream pipelines, viewing them as an attempt by Russia to use its vast energy resources to gain leverage across Europe. Read More Last month, German federal prosecutors filed charges against a former Ukrainian army officer in connection with the same explosions.Serhii K. was detained in August 2025 in an Italian village, where officers raided a bungalow where he was staying with his family. He was extradited to Germany in November. The suspects allegedly used a yacht that set off from the German port of Rostock. The yacht had been rented from a German company using forged IDs and intermediaries. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. The explosions ruptured the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which was Russia’s main natural gas supply route to Germany until Moscow cut off supplies in August 2022. They also damaged Nord Stream 2, which never entered service because Germany suspended its certification process shortly before Russia’s all-out invasion.Initially, some officials in the West suspected that Russia might have carried out the explosions. But German investigators later pointed to suspected Ukrainian involvement.Russia has accused the U.S. of staging the explosions, a charge that Washington has denied. The pipelines were long a target of criticism by the U.S. and some of its allies, which warned that they increased dependence on Russian gas.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 41 Visualizações 0 Anterior

LinkAPNEWS.COMFACT FOCUS: Social media falsely claims heatwave threatens Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and bankParmigiano Reggiano Parmesan cheese wheels are stored in Noceto, near Parma, Italy, Oct. 8, 2019. (AP Photo/Antonio Calanni, File)2026-08-20T17:16:57Z MILAN (AP) — As Italy has been plunged into a period of extreme heat, social media accounts amplified and falsified reports about the impact on the production of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and a regional bank that stores the cheese wheels as collateral for loans.Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is made according to strict specifications within defined geographic areas in the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy. Milk comes from dairy cattle fed only on locally grown forage, and the wheels must be aged for a minimum of 12 months, and can continue to 24, 36 or 40 months. To help producers manage their capital, a handful of banks accept the cheese wheels as collateral on loans during the aging process — the largest of which is the Credito Emiliano S.p.A’s Magazini Generali delle Tagliate (MGT), which has been operating since 1953.Social media claimed that the extreme heat that swept Italy threatened both the cheese and its main cheese bank. Here’s a closer look at the facts.CLAIM: Extreme heat is creating a “Great Parmesan Crisis” threatening both Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Italy’s “cheese banks,” where hundreds of thousands of wheels of the cheese are stored as loan collateral.THE FACTS: Fortunately, wheels of the beloved cheese are neatly tucked away in cool storage and aging nicely while the rest of Italy sweats. MGT, which stores 500,000 cheese wheels valued at 300 million euros ($350 million) in two storage facilities, confirmed all is well. Giancarlo Ravanetti, MGT’s general manager, said the extreme heat had pushed energy consumption to keep the facilities cool up by 30%. Read More But he said neither the cheese wheels nor MGT’s operations were at risk due to the extreme temperatures, which this summer have regularly neared 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).“The warehouses have not been affected and have continued operating normally, ensuring the cheese wheels are stored and aged under optimal conditions,” he said, adding that he does not anticipate longer-term consequences, even if extreme heat persists in the future.MGT has been investing for several years to make the warehouses more energy efficient. It has replaced two obsolete refrigeration units with a high-efficiency unit, improved thermal insulation of the buildings and installed photovoltaic systems at both warehouses, reaching an installed capacity of 1.5 MW. The Parmigiano Reggiano consortium, which protects and regulates the prized hard cheese, acknowledges the “long-standing challenge” of heatwaves, as extreme heat can reduce milk production significantly, with “yields potentially falling by around 10%.”But, the consortium said in a statement that Parmigiano Reggiano production “is not currently at risk.”It emphasized that cows are mostly fed preserved and dried forage to guarantee supply even during drought. Farms that supply 70% of the milk used to make the cheese are equipped with fans, controlled water-spraying systems and environmental monitoring to keep the cows comfortable. The remaining milk supply comes from hilly and mountain areas where temperatures are generally cooler, the consortium said.___Find AP Fact Checks here: https://apnews.com/APFactCheck. WWW.404MEDIA.CO'Darth Vader' Wants Flock in San DiegoDuring the public comment portion of a recent San Diego city council meeting, the council called for the next comment to take the podium: "Darth Vader?" As he approached the microphone in his black helmet and cape, his heavy breathing reached the mic before he did.At the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee Meeting on August 19, Vader — whose identity is not revealed during the meeting — spoke passionately in support of Flock to San Diego.💡Are you the Dark Lord of the Sith in question? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at sam.404. Otherwise, send me an email at sam@404media.co."The emperor is a fan of Flock, and we must continue utilizing Flock technologies so that we can follow and surveil the rebel scum as they move from playground to playground, from playground to pool, from pool to gymnasium," Vader said. "Because we all know that the Flock cameras are not only following the license plate readers; they are following children. They are following children in parks and gymnasiums, and we need this. I need this so I can stalk my ex-girlfriend. How will the people trust this city council when this city council continues to vote for surveillance technology that imprisons them?" Vader asked the council members to "work their Jedi mind tricks" and use "double speaking" to convince people that more surveillance is good. He referenced a June 2023 city council vote in favor of San Diego's Unsafe Camping Ordinance, which critics say effectively criminalized homelessness."This is what the emperor needs. This technology will help us find the rebel scum and their hidden base on Hoth. This technology will help us find Luke Skywalker as he traverses the universe in his X-wing. This technology is a necessary, necessary force," Vader said. There are more than 550 Flock cameras installed around the city of San Diego, according to publicly available data aggregated by Flock tracking map DeFlock. San Diego signed a year-long deal to join Flock's Nova service, giving the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) access to "open source intelligence" and data from other law enforcement agencies, Axios reported in April. As 404 Media recently reported, Nova supplements license plate data with personal information sourced from other companies and the wider web. “You're going to be able to access data and jump from LPR to person and understand what that context is, link to other people that are related to that person [...] marriage or through gang affiliation, et cetera,” a Flock employee said during an internal company meeting, according to an audio recording obtained by 404 Media. “There’s very powerful linking.”‘I Would Never Do This To You:’ Protesting Flock, Arizona Man Presents Plan to Surveil Government Officials“They didn’t understand it was satire in the beginning until the end,” Casa Grande, Arizona resident Jacob Petrosky told 404 Media. “They were not happy, they were very upset.”In June, SDPD stopped sharing surveillance data with federal authorities and other out-of-state agencies following Attorney General Rob Bonta's office warning the police the actions were likely violating state law that prohibits local police departments from sharing ALPR data with outside law enforcement agencies, according to local news outlet KPBS.A San Diego man recently spent a month in jail after a Flock camera wrongfully flagged him for a felony crime involving brandishing a handgun, his attorney claims. That man is now preparing to sue the city, the Times of San Diego reported. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMilwaukee Brewers Have MLB’s Most Wins And A Prospect Near 40 HomersPHOENIX: Andrew Fischer of the Milwaukee Brewers hits a home run in a spring training game against the Cincinnati Reds at American Family Fields of Phoenix on Feb. 28, 2026. (Photo by David Durochik/Diamond Images via Getty Images)Diamond Images/Getty ImagesThe Milwaukee Brewers have the best record in Major League Baseball (78-49) despite being dead last in home runs (118). Seems like the only thing they need is a some power.Seems like they have it on the horizon in 22-year-old Andrew Fischer. Milwaukee’s first-round pick in the 2025 MLB Draft has crashed 37 of them in the minors in 2026. He’s one swat from 40 if you count a spring-training blast and another “bombino” for Team Italy in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.“What I have seen is he is an incredible hitter,” said Mike Guerrero, manager of the Brewers’ Double-A Biloxi (MS) farm team. “His potential offensively is really high. If we can make him an average defender or better, you could have an All-Star for a lot of years.”That comment was made in February to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Since then, Fischer has done this at two levels:54 games for Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers: 20 homers, 50 RBI, .298.51 games for Double-A Biloxi Shuckers: 17 homers, 38 RBI, .236.105 games overall: 37 homers, 88 RBI, .268, 80 walks, 159 strikeouts. After Milwaukee made Fischer the 20th overall pick in 2025, Tod Johnson, the Brewers’ VP of amateur acquisition told McCalvy: “(There was) a split in the room a little bit, but a decent chunk of our group thought he was the best college hitter in the Draft this year. We're pretty excited to add that kind of bat to our system."Fischer’s coach at Tennessee, Tony Vitello (now manager of the San Francisco Giants) told MLB Network that day: “He’s just a big teddy bear on the field that loves competing, loves being around the guys, loves being around the group.”MESA, AZ: Third baseman Andrew Fischer of the Milwaukee Brewers fields a ground ball in a spring training Spring Breakout game against the Athletics at Hohokam Stadium on March 22, 2026. Anyone who tells you they wouldn't do what they felt is right for them and best for their family is lying to you. That's something that I felt was the right move for me.”Tennessee did not repeat as champions. Fischer got $3.5 million to sign after hitting .341 with 25 homers and 65 RBI in 65 games for the Volunteers. A Great-Great OpportunityFischer got to play for Italy in the WBC because his great-great grandfather Angelo Mazzeo was born near Naples in 1889. (Photo by Kenneth Richmond/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe WBC was a fun learning experience. Hitting .357 (5-for-14) with 2 doubles, a homer and 4 RBI in 4 games in fun anywhere. Doing it on a big stage and helping the upstart Italians to a 5-1 record and third-place finish was even better.Fischer expressed pure elation while rounding the bases on the homer and credited Kansas City Royals slugger Vinnie Pasquantino for helping the younger players.“I think our team chemistry developed at an incredible speed," he told Italian reporters. “I believe it all started with Vinnie and the way he made us feel from the very first moment. I immediately felt comfortable, which allowed me to open up to the others."Be Wary, However … Brewers fan sites are celebrating Fischer becoming the first Milwaukee minor-leaguer to hit 30+ home runs in 25 years. The last to do it was Lancxe Burkhart.Who? Exactly.Burkhart belted 32 homers across High-A (20 at High Desert, California League) and Double-A (12 at Huntsville, Southern League) in 2001. The right-handed hitter totaled 93 RBI and hit .280 that year.MARYSVILLE, AZ: Minor-league slugger Lance Burkhart poses during the Milwaukee Brewers' Team Photo Day at the Spring Training Facility. Digital Photo. Photo by Tom Hauck/Getty Images.Getty ImagesBurkhart never got to the majors. Injuries contributed. He played eight years in three organizations (Expos, Brewers, Orioles) in the minors, then five seasons in the independent Atlantic League, and is in his 12th season as a minor-league coach. He’s the Giants’ minor-league catching coordinator. How Things ChangeThe Brewers are seeking their fourth consecutive NL Central Division title and eighth playoff trip in nine years. They are also dreaming of making Milwaukee’s second trip to the World Series. Ever. As in since 1982. When the Brewers were in the American League. That’s not all that has drastically changed. Back then, the Brewers belted more home runs than any team on the planet. “Harvey’s Wallbangers” – nicknamed after manager Harvey Kuenn, banged out 216 homers that year. Gorman Thomas hit 39, Ben Oglivie 34, and Cecil Cooper 32. Hall of Famers Robin Yount (29), Ted Simmons (23) and Paul Molitor (19) had “Bernie Brewer” wearing out the seat of his pants sliding down to celebrate after every homer, too.MILWAUKEE: Brewers mascot Bernie Brewer makes his way down the giant slide in left field after a Milwaukee home run during an MLB game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023 at American Family Field. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesBernie’s celebratory slide has been a tradition since the mascot first set sail after a homer by infielder Pedro Garcia in 1973.As for those “Wallbangers” of 44 years ago … they began the final day of the 1982 season tied with Baltimore, then belted four homers (two by Yount, one apiece by Cooper and Simmons) to rout the Orioles, 10-2, and make the playoffs for just the second time. They beat the California Angels in a five-game series then lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in a seven-game World Series. The Cardinals were built on pitching, defense and speed – much like the current Brewers.Milwaukee Brewers’ FutureThe Brew Crew has the most electrifying pitcher on the plant in fastball sensation Jacob Misiorowski (207 strikeouts in 139 innings, 1.75 ERA). They also have a bullpen with the third-best ERA overall and most saves (40), anchored by closer Trevor Megill (22 saves, 2.44 ERA).Highly-touted Cooper Pratt and Luis Lara have been called up to help the offense and defense. The Brewers are averaging 5.0 runs a game, third in the NL, and allowing a league-best 3.7 runs a game. They are second in doubles (222) and walks (532), third in steals (127) and tied for the lead with the arch-rival Chicago Cubs in on-base percentage (.337). They find a way to get it done.PHILADELPHIA: Jesus Made of the Milwaukee Brewers runs out an RBI single for the National League during the 2026 MLB Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park on July 12, 2026. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThey also have the No. 1 prospect in the game as ranked by MLB.com in 19-year-old switch-hitting infielder Jesus Made. Is it too early for Made or Fischer to contribute this year? Maybe, though one or both could be added to the roster as valuable reserves. Made has 107 steals in 272 games in the minors and could be an important pinch-runner in a late-inning situation. Fischer’s booming bat could be used in a crucial pinch-hitting role.Bernie Brewer may need to get a new set of pants. As the Milwaukee Brewers’ bright and radiant future goes up, he may be sliding down – a lot. This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 50 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAlonso addresses Enzo Fernandez’ Chelsea future amid Man City linksAlonso addresses Enzo Fernandez’ Chelsea future amid Man City linksXabi Alonso insists that Enzo Fernandez is still a Chelsea player amid reports linking him with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester City, but offered no guarantees that he will remain so. City are interested in the Argentina international after selling Rodri to Barcelona for a £65.4 million transfer fee. Chelsea reportedly set a deadline of 5pm last Friday for City to make a bid of at least £120 million, but no offer arrived, and they may now demand an even higher fee for the midfielder. Real Madrid had also been linked with the 25-year-old, who said in April that he would one day like to live in the Spanish capital, but Los Blancos have denied holding any interest in the player.Alonso addresses Enzo Fernandez’ Chelsea future amid Man City linksSpeaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League game against Fulham on Monday, Alonso addressed Fernandez’ is indeed a’ future at Chelsea.“Enzo is a Chelsea player, a top, top player,” he said. “He’s training really well, he started ten days ago with the team, very integrated. We are happy with him and he is getting ready for Monday.”Asked whether or not Fernandez has told him he wishes to stay at Stamford Bridge, Alonso responded: “He’s training really well and I see him with a good attitude and that’s what we want. He’s trying his best to prepare for the kick off of the Premier League.” Several Chelsea players, including Liam Delap, Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi, are reportedly up for sale. Alonso says he is more than content with his squad heading into the new season. “I’m very happy I think we have made many right choices. Very good balance in terms of quality, personality, maturity, different stages of their career, good momentum. We are in a good position I would say.” Many of Alonso’s players participated at the FIFA World Cup this past summer, and the new manager admits that some of them will need a little longer before they return to action. “Let’s see,” he added. “We will check, we will assess. The Red Devils travel to the MKM Stadium on Saturday to take on the newly promoted Tigers, with kickoff set for 12.30pm BST. Mount, who has struggled with injury problems since moving to Old Trafford from Chelsea in 2023, is a doubt heading into the match. But Carrick says the midfielder is recovering from a knock and does not have a serious issue. Carrick confirms Man Utd star will return ‘very, very soon’“First of all, Mason is a top player,” the Man Utd boss said at his pre-match press conference. “We have seen that so far. Pre-season, he was one of our best players in the early stages in the games that he played. I thought he was fantastic, not surprising given what I have seen before, what I expect and what I know of him.“He has picked up a bit of a knock, there are no dramas. It is nothing major. Of course, he has missed some football over recent years, and he wants to be fit and wants to be in that full rhythm and wants stay fit, so we’re doing our best to help him do that, but he is a top player, Mason.“The same as recovery, we have got to manage the squad, there are going to be injuries through the season, and we have to have a squad that is strong enough to have a really good top starting team with depth to carry us through the season. Mason will be back very, very soon. If not immediately.” Read – Rashford keen to focus on football amid pundit spotlightWhile Mount is “touch and go” to face Hull, Carrick did confirm that Matthijs De Ligt, Benjamin Sesko and backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow have returned to training after recovering from injury. “Karl has trained this week, he is back training, so he is in good shape,” he said.“Matthijs has been out for a long period of time, but he is training. Great to have him back. He won’t be involved, but he’s in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that is a good bonus for us really.“Ben is back training, so that’s another positive and looking forward to having him back around the ground and getting him some minutes as well.“Managing Mason a little bit, but he is very close, so it is touch and go for the weekend really and going into next week.”Read – Our writers’ predictions for the 2026/27 Premier League seasonFantasy Premier League – Building an FPL team without Haaland for 2026/27See Also – Every Premier League kit released ahead of 2026/27 seasonFollow The Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 4 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Quinshon Judkins could be a fantasy bargain in 2026 draftsQuinshon Judkins is a breakout candidate in his sophomore season with the Browns, as the team has addressed some of the offensive line woes that reduced Judkins' effectiveness as a rookie.According to USA TODAY Sports Fantasy projections, Judkins currently ranks as RB21 in standard scoring leagues, and RB21 in PPR formats - but there's reason to believe that Judkins has significant upside. Here's USA TODAY Sports' Jacob Camenker on why Judkins could be a bargain in fantasy drafts:"Henry isn't the only undervalued AFC North running back. Judkins has the potential to outplay his RB21 label thanks to Cleveland's new-look offensive line.Last season, Judkins averaged just 1.4 yards before contact per carry, which ranked last among 49 qualified running backs. The Browns revamped their blocking unit because of those struggles, and four new starters will join Teven Jenkins up front. If that unit can quickly jell and find success, Judkins could be poised for a breakout season. Todd Monken has expressed a desire to operate as a run-heavy team, so the 22-year-old running back will be a high-usage fantasy option with the potential of a high-end RB2. One could easily justify selecting him a full round earlier than his ADP indicates."USA TODAY Sports Fantasy's latest preseason projections estimate Judkins to rush for 975 yards and 7 touchdowns, with 29.3 catches in the receiving game.Win your matchups. LinkSPORTS.YAHOO.COMDiamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall calls Ketel Marte situation 'bizarre,' says team needs explanation and apology from starArizona Diamondbacks star second baseman Ketel Marte remains on the restricted list after failing to show up for Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. But clarity could be coming soon. Team general manager Mike Hazen said Wednesday that he planned to meet with Marte on Thursday, potentially clearing things up between the team and player. Ahead of that meeting, however, Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall appeared on a local radio program and called the situation both a “complete mystery” and “bizarre,” saying the team still doesn’t have answers. "Still a complete mystery. It’s just bizarre."Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall tells @Bickley_Marotta the team still hasn’t learned the reason why Ketel Marte didn’t appear at Fenway Park on Monday.Hall's interview is presented by Freeway Chevrolet. pic.twitter.com/FKi0THvSCf— Arizona Sports (@AZSports) August 20, 2026Hall added that the team needs “explanations from [Marte] and apologies from him.” Once that happens, Hall added, “Hopefully, we can pick up the pieces, and move on and turn the page.” Hall briefly spoke about Marte’s absence from the team last year. Following the All-Star break, Marte took some time off after learning his house had been burglarized. That absence apparently caused a rift between Marte and the team, causing Marte to later apologize for taking time off. Hall said the two situations are not identical, but added, “There is a bit of a history there.”Hall said he believed Marte’s absence affected the team the past few games. On Monday, the Diamondbacks fell 11-1 to Boston. The following day, Arizona blew a 4-3 lead after a Gabriel Moreno grand slam briefly put them ahead. The Diamondbacks avoided a sweep Wednesday, winning 7-6 in extras. It was an encouraging victory given the Marte situation, Hall said. While Hall said he was disappointed that Marte did not show up for Monday’s game, he stressed that the team is withholding judgement until they hear from Marte exactly what was going on that prevented him from being there. While Marte’s absence was originally described as a personal issue, the situation took a bit of a turn Tuesday, when it was announced Marte would return to Phoenix for an MRI on his knee. A day later, Marte’s agent confirmed the second baseman would undergo an MRI on Thursday and that he looked forward to returning to the team as soon as possible. Marte’s MRI and chat with Hazen should provide some clarity on the situation moving forward. For now, it sounds like the Diamondbacks are just as in the dark as everyone else regarding why Marte hasn’t been around.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 43 Visualizações 0 Anterior

The chant, which carries an anti-Palestine message, was sung by some of their supporters who travelled to their away game against Burnley on Sunday. Before the club’s first home game of the Championship season - against Charlton at the London Stadium on Saturday - the club have released a statement asking fans not to take part in any chanting which “creates division or causes offence”.They reminded their fans that “each and every supporter is an ambassador”, adding that “equality, equity, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the club.”In a statement, the east London club said: “Regardless of their background every supporter within our diverse fanbase should also be free to enjoy watching their team play football without fear, discrimination or abuse. And we remain committed to ensuring that everyone feels safe, respected and included.“The Club is aware of an offensive and divisive chant, containing an anti-Palestine message, being sung by a section of away supporters during our opening EFL Championship match at Burnley on Sunday afternoon.Manor Solomon celebrates scoring against Burnley last weekend (Getty)“We understand that singing and chanting is a traditional and deeply-embedded part of the matchday experience.“We encourage our supporters to sing loud and proud about their football club and the players wearing the claret and blue shirt – but never in a way that creates division or causes offence among fellow fans.Solomon, 27, scored in the draw at Turf Moor last weekend on what was his competitive debut for the club. LinkAPNEWS.COMPakistan may consider private hospital treatment for imprisoned ex-PM Khan, minister saysEl ex primer ministro paquistaní Imran Khan en conferencia de prensa en Lahore, Pakistán, el 18 de mayo del 2023. (AP foto/K.M. Chaudary)2026-08-20T17:48:33Z ISLAMABAD (AP) — A senior Pakistani Cabinet minister said Thursday the government could consider allowing imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to receive treatment at a private hospital or abroad if adequate care is unavailable at a government facility, while pledging to comply with a Supreme Court order on Khan’s treatment.Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the government had approached the Supreme Court to seek clarification on whether the medical relief granted to Khan applied only to the former premier or could be extended to other prisoners. His comments came hours after authorities stepped up security at an Islamabad hospital amid expectations that Khan could be taken there. Dozens of journalists were also gathered at the hospital, hoping to get photos or video of Khan, who has not been seen publicly since his imprisonment in 2023 in a graft case. Authorities on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to review or withdraw an order requiring Khan to receive a medical examination at a private hospital of his choice. The court declined to hear the application on technical grounds, asking authorities to complete the required paperwork. Under the order, Khan is to be taken to the hospital before midnight Thursday to be examined by a medical board that includes his personal physician.Chaudhry wrote on X that the government would fully comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling and that its request for clarification was not intended to defy or delay implementation of the decision. The government maintains that under existing rules, prisoners are provided medical treatment in jail and can be transferred to government hospitals when necessary. LinkAPNEWS.COMTrump keeps embracing data centers even as they become toxic in midterm racesPresident Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with technology leaders in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)2026-08-20T17:48:56Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump, speaking alongside cryptocurrency leaders at the White House this week, made a statement that Republican and Democratic candidates alike wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole.“If I were the mayor of a town or the governor of a state, and I had a chance to get a big plant in, an AI plant or a data center,” Trump said, “I would absolutely want it because the jobs are enormous and the money paid, the taxes paid, are just enormous.”It’s not the kind of message anyone is using in competitive midterm races. The race to build data centers, which power artificial intelligence and cloud computing, has run aground amid frustration from voters who don’t want to live near the massive warehouse campuses. Even the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm warned that anger over data centers — some of which dwarf football stadiums and use more energy than small cities — could cost them a seat. Opposition stretches across the political spectrum because of fears that the behemoths will jack up electricity bills, drain people’s water wells, create unhealthy amounts of air and noise pollution and forever change a community’s character — all while getting lucrative tax breaks from states competing for their business.Trump has framed data centers as a necessary component of a top national and economic security priority: winning the AI race against China. However, he also has acknowledged concern over rising electricity bills, previously saying “it’s only fair” for the companies to shoulder their costs. He also suggested this week that data centers need “a little public relations help.” In recent months, he has gotten tech giants to sign a voluntary pledge to shield U.S. consumers from higher utility bills from data centers, even as he pushes to streamline the process for companies and utilities to build their own power plants. Read More But building power plants doesn’t happen overnight, and the immediate political reality for candidates across the country is far different.“It is yet another dimension in which the White House appears tone deaf — tone deaf at best and indifferent to the interest of other Republican candidates at worst,” said James Henson, the director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas, Austin, a nonpartisan research organization. Republican committee issues warning over data centers in OhioStatewide candidates from Nevada to Pennsylvania, both Republican and Democratic, are weaponizing data centers against their opponents, and candidates who absorb those attacks are subsequently trying to distance themselves from them.In Ohio, a data center hot spot with closely contested races for governor and U.S. Senate, the National Republican Senatorial Committee warned in a memo Tuesday that Sen. Jon Husted is vulnerable to losing his seat because of the centers.Democratic nominee Sherrod Brown is airing attack ads against Husted that call him the “face of data centers in Ohio” as people gather signatures for a statewide referendum to ban their construction. The Republican memo said it’s been a “sleeper issue for the entire election cycle.”“Brown is using it because it works,” the NRSC said. “More than any other thing in this race, data centers are the anchor hanging around Husted’s neck. If he loses and data centers get the blame, politicians across the country will take notice — and they will not go near the next one.” The memo suggested voters may balk at Democratic candidates who want to stop data center construction altogether in favor of a Republican candidate who only wants data centers built if a community approves it in a local vote and it pays for its own power, water and other utilities. Most registered voters oppose building a data center in their area, according to a July Fox News poll. Still, the issue falls behind other voter concerns, such as cost of living, as November looms. A Quinnipiac Poll conducted in June asked voters what issues were important in deciding who to vote for in U.S. House elections, and about 4 in 10 mentioned AI data centers. Trump’s statement already put to use in Nevada raceIn Nevada, Democrat Aaron Ford quickly tied Trump’s statement to Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, characterizing them as being in “lockstep on data centers.”In a statement, Ford said Trump and Lombardo are “Nevada data centers’ biggest cheerleaders” who “only care about catering to their ‘billionaire friends’ while Nevadans pay the price.”Ford this week unveiled a policy platform in which he said he would halt new state tax breaks for data centers — he estimated them at $200 million currently — while auditing existing projects to ensure they are delivering on promises. He also said he would ensure data centers pay for their electricity needs, do not deplete Nevada’s water supply and help local governments negotiate strong benefits agreements with developers. Texas’ governor changed course and got a jab from TrumpTexas Gov. Greg Abbott, who last November celebrated Google’s announcement of a $40 billion investment there by calling the state “the epicenter of AI development,” is under attack from his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa, over his pursuit of data center development.Abbott has since changed course by promising tougher action, such as removing the state’s sales tax exemption and holding up projects to review their energy usage.Trump criticized the shift, saying “I think it’s a mistake” in a recent interview with Punchbowl News. Asked about Trump’s support for data centers, Abbott’s office said the governor’s “top priority is to protect Texans’ safety and quality of life and ensure the integrity of our power grid and water supply.”“Simply put, Texans must come first,” Abbott’s office said.Data centers complicated Wisconsin governor raceWhile Trump embraces data centers, even some of his allies are using them for political attacks. U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, running for Wisconsin governor, released a TV ad this week branding his Democratic opponent as “Data Center David Crowley.”The ad includes a clip of Crowley saying Wisconsin could become the “AI and data hub not only for the entire country, but for the entire globe.”Crowley has said local communities must have veto authority while also calling data centers a part of the modern economy that could bring significant economic benefits to the state.Tiffany, who Trump has endorsed, has also said positive things about data centers. In January, Tiffany called data centers “exciting new technology,” in an interview with PBS Wisconsin. And last December, he voted for a bipartisan bill known as the SPEED Act, which is designed to accelerate construction of new AI infrastructure projects like data centers. It hasn’t passed the Senate.Neither Tiffany nor Crowley support a moratorium on new data center construction.Tiffany has called for repealing the state tax incentive for data centers, while Crowley has not. They both have called for stricter regulation.Crowley, at an event Wednesday where he received the endorsement of the environmental group Clean Wisconsin, downplayed the attacks Tiffany has made against his data center position.“He’s getting very good at saying one thing and doing something different,” Crowley said, pointing to Tiffany’s votes in support of the SPEED Act.“What Congressman Tom Tiffany’s doing is lying because he’s trying to run away from his record in Congress,” Crowley said.___Bauer reported from Madison, Wisconsin, and Levy from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. LinkAPNEWS.COMOne Army unit is offering 4 bonus days off to play Grand Theft Auto for soldiers who reenlistA sign stands outside the main gate of Fort Stewart, Ga., Aug. 6, 2025. (AP Photo/Russ Bynum, File)2026-08-20T17:26:52Z SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A U.S. Army unit is offering its troops a special bonus if they reenlist soon: four extra days off timed around the November release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI.Commanders of the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion based at Fort Stewart, Georgia, believe free time to indulge in the latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — in which players commit carjackings, battle police in shootouts and attempt audacious heists — will sway some soldiers to extend their military commitments. The Nov. 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be one of the year’s biggest entertainment events. Game publisher Take-Two Interactive hasn’t released sales figures for preorders, but CEO Strauss Zelnick recently called them “unprecedented and astonishing.”A career counselor with the Army engineer battalion hatched the idea with commanders to tie a retention perk to the game’s release, in part to remind soldiers of their approaching reenlistment dates, said Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a Fort Stewart spokesperson. “The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what soldiers are interested in,” Tomko said Thursday in a statement to The Associated Press.Battalion commanders wrote in a memo to soldiers that those who sign reenlistment contracts by Nov. 14 would receive “a special 4 day pass.” “This special pass is specifically designed to coincide with the highly anticipated release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI,” battalion commander Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson wrote.Tomko confirmed the authenticity of the July 28 memo, which was photographed and posted online. Read More She said at least 20 of 130 eligible soldiers have signed up for the bonus. To qualify, they must commit to serving at least two more years in uniform.Buzz for Grand Theft Auto VI has been building since 2023, when its first cinematic trailer showed a return to the series’ fictional Vice City — a satirical analogue of Miami — and an expanded swath of Florida-based locales that include gator-infested swamps.Underscoring the hype, developer Rockstar Games plans to debut gameplay video next week in an extended trailer on Netflix. The rollout was preempted when hackers leaked apparent footage online this week.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 25 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCole Van Lanen's return has ripple-effect to rest of Jaguars OLThe Jacksonville Jaguars activating Cole Van Lanen off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list benefits the offense in a number of ways.First, and most obvious, is the boost he gives the offensive line with his play. While there will likely be a ramp-up period for Van Lanen with him missing so much time, once he's a full go, the Jaguars are getting a good player at a key position back on the field.Van Lanen showcased last season his impressive versatility, but once settling at left tackle during the final five games of the season, he didn't surrender any sacks at left tackle, and he ranked 21st in PFF's run-blocking grade during that span.Impact of Cole Van Lanen's return to JaguarsThat said, Van Lanen's eventual return to 11-on-11 work also gives the Jaguars a lot more flexibility up front as they look to construct the best possible starting five configuration. One option is that Van Lanen could go back to left tackle, allowing Anton Harrison to move back to right tackle.Or, if Van Lanen takes over at right tackle, Walker Little could now move inside to right guard, adding to the competition for that role in Patrick Mekari's absence. The return of Van Lanen, along with the Jaguars recently acquiring Daniel Faalele as quickly given them numerous options up front. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Cole Van Lanen's return has ripple-effect to rest of Jaguars OL0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 26 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

As part of the contract, Venables will have an average salary of $10.5 million over the remaining six years of his deal.Oklahoma went 10-3 in 2025 and made the playoff for the first time since the 2019 season. The Sooners beat Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU in November to earn a layoff spot before losing 34-24 to the Tide in the first round of the postseason. It was a four-win jump for Oklahoma from a 6-7 season in its first season in the SEC.According to USA Today’s coaching salary database, Venables made just over $7.5 million in 2025 and was the 23rd-highest paid coach in the country just behind Washington’s Jedd Fisch and ahead of former Florida coach Billy Napier.Nine coaches made over $10 million in 2025 and five of them had salaries north of $10.5 million. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHave Mets Finally Turned Corner With Sneaky Hot Streak? The New York Mets celebrate the victory against the San Diego PadresThe New York Mets have been abysmal since the middle of last season, ranking as one of the worst teams in baseball over the last calendar year.Recently, however, that's started to change. The Mets have quietly been excellent this month, going 11-4 over their last 15 games. Surprisingly, their hot streak began immediately after the MLB Trade Deadline on Aug. 3, which saw New York part with several stars and seemingly wave the white flag.Even more surprisingly, the Mets have been rolling without their best hitter, Juan Soto, who hasn't played since July 24 due to a calf injury.Looking for the perfect gift for a baseball player in your life? Check out our brand new baseball lifestyle brand!New York already has as many wins in August as it did last month and more than it did in June. The offense has been roughly league average, but the key has been improved pitching, with the Mets allowing just 3.88 runs per game this month.Young hurlers like Nolan McLean, Zac Thornton and Christian Scott have stepped up recently, carrying New York's rotation. Meanwhile, Kodai Senga has reinvented himself as a dominant reliever after struggling as a starter this year. The Mets are still last in the NL East, 12 games under .500 and 10 games out of a playoff spot, so it's likely too little, too late. However, time will tell if they can finish the year strong and carry it over into next season.More MLB: Aaron Nola's Season Takes Shocking Turn For Phillies0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 26 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

Especially the guys constantly colliding in the trenches, but for a defender to make contact with an opposing team’s quarterback in this situation is fairly uncalled for.I won’t go as far as to say it was dirty as much as it is just a dumb thing to do. It is not surprising to hear this led to a fight. When recounting what happened, Burrow and his top wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase had two very different reactions.“We better f***ing protect Joe,” Chase said of the incident.Joe Burrow said “sh*t happens,” when asked about the contact and dust up during today’s joint practice with the Bears.Ja’Marr Chase on the other hand? At best, he was trying to simulate blocking on an interception despite the very obvious rule of not touching the quarterback. At worst, he was trying to look like a tough guy, which is somehow even dumber than the first thing. No team that has a quarterback of Burrow’s caliber wants any defender doing something dumb like this in a joint practice. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COM“Intimidating & traumatic”: Cop sues department for letting trans woman use women’s locker roomA Norfolk, Virginia, officer who accused a transgender recruit of inappropriate behavior is suing both the city and Police Chief Mark Talbot for allegedly refusing to do anything in response. Meghan Grabow claims that in 2024, a “biological male” recruit “who self-identified as a woman” stared at her uncomfortably one day while she changed in the locker room, according to court documents obtained by WTKR. Related Trans vet forced to ride electric trike to provide for disabled daughter after state revoked license In the lawsuit, Grabow continuously misgenders the recruit, referring to her as a “man” and claiming she “made no attempt to dress, behave, or otherwise present himself as anything other than a man.” “Here comes this man in a suit and tie… and just stared at me,” Grabow alleged, adding that the recruit gawked “as a man would look at a woman.” Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Grabow reported the alleged incident to two captains and claims one told her, “This is a city policy; learn to deal with it; find another locker room.” The other, she said, told her to bring her gun into the shower with her to feel safer. The lawsuit then blasts leadership for refusing to out the trans recruit to other female officers, other than the recruit’s roommate, who was allegedly denied a new room after requesting one in response to the information. Grabow accuses leadership of fostering a “sexually harassing, intimidating and traumatic” environment, describing a meeting between Chief Mark Talbot and a group of department women in which Talbot allegedly did not take their concerns seriously. Grabow, who is reportedly Catholic and does not believe trans people exist, said she felt defeated because Talbot asked the women to use she/her pronouns for the recruit during the meeting. Grabow’s lawsuit seeks $15 million in compensatory damages because she was placed on indefinite suspension pending her termination in June 2025. Another former officer, Martin Powers, is also suing the city for $5 million for alleged retaliatory firing after sparring with Talbot during the meeting on the trans recruit, who reportedly no longer works for the Norfolk Police Department.” “They hired this man who identifies as a woman and then deliberately and methodically tried to keep it a secret”” Powers told the anti-trans publication, IW Features. Grabow also spoke with the publication and claimed other officers who expressed concern were “reminded that they have families, and they have a mortgage to pay for, or they were next on a promotion.” Grabow said that after she asked the recruit what she was doing in the locker room, she didn’t reply and walked to a locker. She said women continued to be forced to change in front of the trans recruit and would go to the nearest 7-Eleven to use the bathroom. “We don’t have anywhere to shower… We all just kind of gave up that anything was going to be done,” she said. Grabow’s lawyer, Scott Lloyd, told 13News Now that his client’s “expectation of privacy” in the locker room “was violated pretty much in the worst way possible.” “The department was wrong from the beginning in the way that they handled it,” Lloyd added, “by not giving anyone a heads-up and shutting down and stepping over the conversation when people were trying to share their traumatic experience.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 7 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
LinkAPNEWS.COMMichael Cohen, Trump’s former fixer-turned-enemy, is hosting the president on his radio showMichael Cohen speaks during a news conference announcing his new radio show in New York, July 13, 2026. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig, File)2026-08-20T18:14:50Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to appear Thursday on the radio show of his former fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen, making a public reunion with the man who once called him a “Cheeto-dusted cartoon villain” and testified against him both in court and before Congress.Cohen, who served prison time for his role in what he said was covering up Trump’s “dirty deeds,” confirmed that the Republican president will appear in a taped interview airing on his 77 WABC program Thursday evening and Sunday. The apparent truce with Cohen makes him the latest in a long line of Trump loyalists who have had public falling-outs with the president but found themselves back in his good graces. Other recent examples include Elon Musk and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. But the split from Cohen was perhaps the most personal. Cohen once boasted that he would “take a bullet” for Trump and was by Trump’s side during his political rise. After their public breakup, Cohen’s testimony in Trump’s 2024 criminal hush-money trial instead paved the way for Trump’s criminal conviction just as he was trying to make his political comeback. Cohen has since criticized prosecutors in the case and has said he and Trump have started to reconcile. The White House did not comment on Cohen’s statements or confirm the appearance, but Trump’s official schedule showed him taping a radio interview Thursday morning. In a long post on his online newsletter Thursday promoting the interview, Cohen said that although his relationship with Trump became “political blood sport,” there were 15 years of close friendship between them. Read More “The good times don’t cease to have existed because the bad times came afterward,” Cohen wrote.Simply, he said: “We forgave.”Trump has made no warm public statements about Cohen but in a series of social media posts this year linked to some of his former lawyer’s comments saying he felt pressured by prosecutors to testify against Trump in the criminal hush money case and a civil fraud case.Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in 2018 after pleading guilty to campaign finance charges and lying to Congress, among other crimes. The campaign finance charges stemmed from his efforts to arrange payouts during the 2016 presidential race to keep the porn actor Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal from making public claims of extramarital affairs with Trump. In 2024, Cohen testified in the criminal case against Trump about the payment to Daniels, which prosecutors said was an illegal effort to influence the 2016 presidential election. Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.Cohen testified before Congress in 2019, alleging Trump had a history of misrepresenting the value of assets to gain favorable loan terms and tax benefits. He gave similar testimony in a 2023 civil fraud trial in New York that found Trump and his companies engaged in fraud by exaggerating his wealth for decades. A New York appeals court later threw out a $550 million judgment against Trump in that case. Trump has asked a court to overturn the remaining parts of the case.In his tell-all memoir in 2020, “Disloyal: The True Story of the Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump,” Cohen was unsparing, calling Trump an “organized crime don” and “master manipulator.” But, foreshadowing their later rapprochement, Cohen also wrote that he still cared for Trump, writing, “I had and still have a lot of affection for him.” MICHELLE L. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski)2026-08-19T18:12:25Z A deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office showed up at the University of Colorado campus last week to serve civil papers to Deion Sanders while the coach was at an open practice and inaccessible. The officer was informed that the Buffaloes coach was “unavailable at the time to receive receipt of the papers,” a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office said Wednesday. Sanders is being subpoenaed to testify as part of a bankruptcy trial involving his son, Shilo, that begins on Aug. 31, according to USA Today. The Colorado athletic department had no additional information. The Buffaloes open the season on Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech. The deputy arrived on campus at 10:22 a.m. on Aug. 11 with civil papers. It was the day the Buffaloes held an open practice with specific rules in place that nothing observed could be reported, published or shared. Carrie Haverfield, a senior communications specialist for the sheriff’s office, wrote in an email to The Associated Press that it’s not uncommon for civil papers to take several attempts to serve.“While working with university staff to find a better time to complete the process, we heard from Mr. Sanders’ legal counsel who indicated that they were able to receive receipt of the papers on behalf of Mr. Sanders, however, they were not located in Boulder County, so we transferred the paperwork to Denver to be served,” Haverfield wrote. “We did not find any university staff to be attempting to block the civil service, on the contrary, they were attempting to help our deputy find a better time to do so. We do not disclose the specific contents of civil papers that we serve.”Shilo Sanders remains in litigation over a lawsuit stemming from an incident with a security guard when he was in high school. The guard filed a lawsuit against Sanders and was issued a default judgment when Sanders didn’t show for his court date. THEONION.COMBoy Gets Nice Long Look At Small Of Father’s Back While He Picks Up Ping-Pong BallAPPLETON, WI—Wide-eyed and unusually still as he took in the unfamiliar sight before him, local 9-year-old Connor Walsh reportedly got a nice long look at the small of his father’s back Thursday while the 44-year-old bent down to retrieve a ping-pong ball that had rolled beneath a basement shelving unit. Several reports indicated that Walsh’s father let out a low groan as he reached toward the floor and exposed several inches of pasty, lightly hairy skin above the waistband of a well-worn pair of Hanes briefs, revealing two small moles, a pinkish skin tag, and a soft crease running horizontally across his lower back. Sources confirmed that the boy stared intently at the strangely vulnerable patch of his father’s body, processing with some unease that this loose, imperfect adult flesh might represent a glimpse of what his own body could look like in another 35 years. As his father remained bent over for several seconds, shifting his weight and grunting while trying to reach the ball with two fingers, Walsh reportedly experienced the rare sensation of seeing the man who usually seemed large, capable, and essentially indestructible reduced to a pale strip of back, an elastic waistband, and the physical effort required to pick something up off the floor. Sources added that although Walsh would soon carry on playing ping-pong as if nothing had happened, the image of his father’s exposed lower back would remain lodged somewhere in his mind for the rest of his life. Here are some of the takeaways from Giants head coach John Harbaugh and a handful of Giants’ players.Harbaugh said he felt the Giants were leaving the practice better than when they started it.“We got a lot of good work done,” Harbaugh said. “I think we leave the practice a better team than when we came in. That was our goal.”About those fightsThere were several toward the back half of practice as the intense heat and physicality got to players.“You’re not trying to do that, but it’s just football,” Harbaugh said. “It’s not a game, so you don’t have the same, quite, guardrails on it. And it’s a violent game. And so, in this sort of an environment, you have these rules of engagement that aren’t really rules of the game. And then somebody perceives somebody else goes over the line, or they do go over the line, and somebody needs to protect somebody, and that’s where it goes. “And I think as long as it doesn’t get out of control where we get a violent type of situation, it’s fine. We decided that anybody that threw a punch in those scrimmages would be treated like the game. That’s why (offensive lineman) Jermaine (Eluemunor) didn’t practice toward the end. He didn’t really throw a hard punch, but it was to the facemask, and that’ll get you in the game. So, that’s a 15-yarder at least. So, we decided that we were following those rules of engagement, and that’s what we did with that one.”‘Dominant’ defenseLet’s let Brian Burns tell us:Brian Burns said the Giants defense was "dominant." They could do better but the Dolphins couldn't stop them. Burns was told they had six sacks. He disagreed. He said it was more. pic.twitter.com/dNxcGa9rxX— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) August 20, 2026Love this line from Burns:“We don’t wait to get punched in the mouth by offensive lines.”If you check our live updates post, Miami beat writers were apoplectic about the Dolphins’ offensive ineptitude against the Giants.Harbaugh called the team’s pass rush on Thursday “ferocious.”“It was ferocious,” he said. “That’s practice, so you’ve got to come do it in the game. But I was impressed with it.”Jaxson Dart’s dayGiants quarterback Jaxson Dart appears to have had a good day against the Miami defense. This is the day we've been waiting to see from Jaxson Dart this summer. He went 16 of 22 passing. Two of the incompletions were spikes. One interception. But he hit several downfield throws to Malachi Fields and Isaiah Likely. Looked in control. #Giants#Dolphins— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) August 20, 2026Dart thought he “played clean”, and that it was good to play against a different defense.Jaxson Dart after a strong joint practice outing for the Giants. pic.twitter.com/AzugtIwBXu— Paul Schwartz (@NYPost_Schwartz) August 20, 2026Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic had Dart at 17 of 21 with an interception.Harbaugh was happy with Dart’s ability to connect with receivers down the field.“We didn’t really run any of our play action, any of our downfield play actions in the game against Minnesota. So, you saw a few more of those in practice today, and I’m sure we’ll have a few of them in the game,” Harbaugh said. “But those are the type of passes you work off the run game. Those are good chunk plays for us, and we had a number of chunk gains off of play action, which was good to see.”Harbaugh felt Thursday’s success was helpful for the offense.“I think it’s one thing in theory. It’s another thing in practice. You want to see it work,” Harbaugh said. “At the end of the day, did the play work? It could be a great play, but if it doesn’t work – and there’s a lot of things that go into making it work, including executing it well – then it’s not a good play.”I shouldn’t have been surprisedThere were reports that newly-signed running back Najee Harris took a few 11-on-11 reps.“He said he felt good,” Harbaugh said. “He wanted to get in there, and he looked good.”0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 74 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGeno Smith will play for Jets in preseason game against SteelersNew York Jets quarterback Geno Smith (7) practices his throws during a practice for the New York Jets at their training facility on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in Florham Park. | USA TODAY Network via Reuters Co Jets quarterback Geno Smith will make his first start of the 2026 preseason Friday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.Sources: #Jets QB Geno Smith will start tomorrow’s game against the #Steelers— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) August 20, 2026Smith missed the Jets’ preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a minor ankle injury.Aaron Glenn gave his healthy starters a series in that first exhibition game and indicated that the starters would also see action in Pittsburgh. It wasn’t clear Smith would be among those suiting up due to the ankle injury. It wouldn’t make sense to put the quarterback on the field if he was anything less than 100 percent. The team still has a long time to go before its first regular season game. While these reps can be helpful, there is still another preseason game in a week where Geno could see time. But since he is ready, this is a chance to work with his receivers to try and get their timing down and build chemistry.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 59 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
LinkAPNEWS.COMJames Harden agrees to 3-year, $97-million contract to remain with Cavaliers, AP sources sayCleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden warms up before an NBA basketball game against the Atlanta Hawks, April 10, 2026, in Atlanta. (AP Photo/Colin Hubbard, File)2026-08-20T18:27:19Z James Harden agreed to a three-year, $97 million contract to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, two people close to the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced. It includes a player option for the 2028-29 season as well as a trade kicker.Harden declined his $42.3 million player option for the upcoming season, but he indicated after the Cavaliers were swept in four games by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals that he would like to return. He also wanted to wait until the Cavaliers were done making a couple moves before his new agreement was in place. The 36-year-old Harden will be going into his 18th NBA season. He averaged 10.7 points and 1.7 turnovers for the Cavaliers in 26 regular-season games after being acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers for Darius Garland on Feb. 4. Harden averaged 19.7 points in the postseason, but his turnovers also went up to 4.7 per game, including five or more in 10 of Cleveland’s 18 games. He also struggled on defense.Cleveland’s starting lineup is likely to be Harden, All-Star Donovan Mitchell, 2025 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and Peyton Watson, who was acquired in a four-team trade Wednesday night.Harden was arrested on June 13 in Houston on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon in a motor vehicle. The charge was dismissed earlier this month in Harris County criminal court after he completed an alternative resolution program.___See AP’s full NBA coverage here JOE REEDY Reedy is a sports writer based in Cleveland covering Ohio for The Associated Press. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDan Campbell Reveals Timeline for Lions Rookie Jimmy RolderJimmy Rolder is making progress. He just may run out of training camp before he’s ready to practice. The Detroit Lions rookie linebacker spent most of Thursday’s practice working on the side with a trainer as he continues recovering from a leg injury. That’s encouraging considering Rolder has already missed most of camp, but Dan Campbell threw some cold water on the idea that the fourth-round pick will return to team drills before camp ends next week.“Probably unlikely,” Campbell said when asked about Rolder practicing before camp concludes. “He’s doing well. He is progressing well, but I think it’ll be hard-pressed to see him next week.”That’s not the update Rolder wanted after he recently expressed optimism about getting back sooner, but it also doesn’t sound like a major setback.Rolder has progressed to working extensively with trainers on the field, and Campbell specifically said he’s doing well. The bigger question now isn’t whether the rookie can squeeze in a few training camp practices. It’s how Detroit handles him when the initial 53-man roster is assembled.Rolder’s Injury Creates an Interesting Roster DecisionDetroit selected Rolder in the fourth round with the No. 118 overall pick in April. The former Michigan linebacker led the Wolverines with 73 tackles last season and entered the NFL with a reputation as a physical, instinctive run defender. The Lions’ official roster biography notes that he became just the third Michigan linebacker drafted by Detroit. Before camp, Rolder looked like a strong bet to make the roster. In fact, he was included among the six linebackers in our pre-training camp 53-man roster projection, with his ability to potentially contribute on defense and special teams making him an intriguing developmental piece.Detroit also already made a financial commitment to Rolder when it signed him to his rookie contract in May.The injury hasn’t changed the fact that the Lions drafted him to develop. It has changed the math around the bottom of the roster. If Rolder is healthy enough to avoid injured reserve, Detroit could simply carry him on the 53 and continue bringing him along. That would force the Lions to use a roster spot on a player who has received very little training camp work, but cutting a fourth-round rookie because he got hurt during his first NFL camp would be a pretty aggressive move. The other possibility is roster maneuvering. Detroit could use an injured designation depending on Rolder’s recovery timeline and how badly Brad Holmes needs that initial roster spot elsewhere. That’s where Thursday’s update becomes more encouraging than Campbell’s “probably unlikely” initially sounds.Rolder doesn’t appear to be headed toward a lengthy absence. Campbell is talking about progress, not a restart in rehabilitation, and Rolder is already doing significant work with a trainer. An outside report earlier this week also indicated Rolder believed he could be close to returning, though Campbell’s timeline is clearly more conservative. For Rolder, missing training camp isn’t ideal. For the Lions, getting their fourth-round linebacker healthy enough to avoid losing a chunk of his rookie season is considerably more important than squeezing him into a practice or two next week.If that’s the tradeoff, Detroit should take it.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 25 Visualizações 0 Anterior
