$15 million federal grant will fund fishing tech projects
A man and a child observe a daily nationwide minute of silence in memory of soldiers killed in the war with Russia next to The Wall of Remembrance of the Fallen for Ukraine in Kyiv, Friday, Aug. 21, 2026. (AP Photo/Francisco Seco)2026-08-21T16:20:41Z A “third eye” camera for groundfishermen and autonomous robots for lobstermen. That’s, in part, what a group of New England commercial fishing advocates, oceanographic researchers and tech companies hope to build with a $15 million federal grant. The goal of the U.S. National Science Foundation funding, awarded in late July, is to help commercial fishermen catch better, healthier fish and bolster the region’s seafood industry from harvest to processing. Researchers will use some of the money to further develop a camera system that allows captains and crews to see what’s swimming into their nets, before it is hauled onto the deck. The innovation could mean the difference between a net full of bycatch — fish that crews don’t want, because they’re heavily regulated, or can’t keep — and a harvest that makes money.Other parts of the federal grant will be spent to develop autonomous robots to detect environmental conditions underwater that could lead to bringing up traps filled with dead lobsters. The awardees also plan to use the money to figure out how to strengthen the processing side of the seafood industry, said Jake Kritzer, executive director for the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems — the organization leading the group awarded the grant — in an interview with The Light. Robots and a ‘third eye’ for commercial fishingFiguring out what exactly is swimming into a fishing vessel’s net can be difficult. Catching certain species that a crew isn’t intending to net can sometimes lead a fishing boat to go over its regulated species quota. But what if groundfishermen had a “third eye” of sorts that could allow them to see what’s flowing into their nets? Read More Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) will use some of that federal funding to develop those systems.“If you had this camera system going in the net, not only could you have a screen on deck so that the captain could see what was going on,” SMAST Dean Kevin Stokesbury said, adding that the data could also be stored in a secure system.Recorded data means more information for captains and observers — paid scientists aboard boats that make sure fishing regulations are being followed. “Especially if there’s any dispute between the two,” Stokesbury said. Bycatch isn’t the only issue commercial fishing crews are facing. Environmental factors can lead lobster vessels to a less-than-optimal catch. The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance is focused on developing autonomous robots to detect adverse conditions — like high temperatures and “pockets of low dissolved oxygen,” according to Kritzer. Those pockets, also known as “hypoxia,” develop with the overgrowth of certain algae, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.“That can mean that a trap comes up full of dead lobsters,” Kritzer said. What happens when vessels bring back the catch is a separate part of the supply chain that the federal grant will also look to address. And it comes with its own set of issues. Processing moves out of New EnglandJobs in New England’s seafood processing industry have declined and moved overseas, Kritzer said. That decline has hit New Bedford too. At least 150 local seafood processing jobs have been lost since 2023, The Light has reported.Kritzer said figuring out how to revitalize that side of the commercial fishing industry is tricky.“It’s one thing to try to support and even boost an existing and strong harvest sector,” Kritzer said. “It’s a different thing to really try to rebuild in many ways, a processing sector that over time has kind of left the region.” Half a million dollars of the federal funds are earmarked for “supply chain roadmapping.”It’ll be spent to figure out just how much of the region’s seafood processing industry has declined — and how that part of the industry can be rebuilt.“It’s gone overseas where things can be processed more cheaply, and at higher volume, and we want to try to bring that back,” Kritzer said. But the problem is hard to remedy without knowing the full extent of the region’s decline.“There are likely some useful data out there with NOAA and state agencies,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone’s done the sort of comprehensive analysis we’re aiming to do.” New Bedford has seen some of that decline in recent years, The Light reported.Blue Harvest Fisheries closed its processing center in 2023, which left 64 people without jobs. And True North Seafood shuttered in 2024, laying off as many as 94 people.“If we really want to kind of boost the seafood industry, there’s only so much we can do at the very start of the supply chain,” Kritzer said. “This is kind of exciting, but a little bit uncharted territory, to start moving across the rest of the supply chain.” Money for ‘risk adverse’ timesThe NSF grant will include projects that incorporate classic research work. But it’ll also be used to build an “innovation ecosystem,” according to Kritzer. That ecosystem can be helpful in an industry that is usually innovative, but which has slowed down in recent years. Now, “because of some of the economic struggle that it’s facing right now, it’s also a fairly risk-adverse industry,” Kritzer said.Another risk: How do you dole out $15 million in public money? “This is not a fishery that I think has the kind of capital that it can try something untested,” Kritzer said. “But it means that now we, as stewards of public resources, are incurring that risk.”___This story was originally published by The New Bedford Light and distributed through a partnership with The Associated Press. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

T-wolves, Lynx co-owner Lore agrees to sell his controlling stake at a $4.5B value, AP source says
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx co-owner Marc Lore has agreed to sell his controlling stake in the franchises to limited partner Marc Shad at a $4.5 billion value barely a year after his purchase was finalized, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The person spoke Friday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details of the agreement were not being publicized.Lore, a New York e-commerce entrepreneur, and partner Alex Rodriguez, the former Major League Baseball star, bought the NBA and WNBA clubs from Minnesota businessman Glen Taylor. That complicated and contentious process lasted more than four years until the $1.5 billion sale got league approval in June 2025.Lore and Shad are essentially swapping roles, the person said. Rodriguez will remain as a co-owner. Lore, Rodriguez and Shad issued a joint statement Friday expressing their commitment to the current leadership in the organization including chief executive officer Matt Caldwell, Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch, and Lynx president of basketball operations and head coach Cheryl Reeve.___AP Basketball Writer Tim Reynolds contributed. ___See AP’s full NBA coverage here

CORN NATION REACTS Survey Results: The Pipeline Is the Priority
THIS ARTICLE BROUGHT TO YOU BY FANDUEL(CLICK HERE to check out FanDuel’s Sportsbook)The Huskers 2025 November-onward skid assured there would be some new faces on the Huskers staff and some of those in time for the Vegas Bowl…where their fortunes did not improve. But that was okay because no one was expecting instant fixes over a few December practices.Come September of 2026, however, attitudes will shift notably in that regard. And while instant flips to excellence will not be required, fans will likely not take too well to backsliding. And their eyes will most certainly be focused on the offensive line of Geep Wade and defense of Rob Aurich. And, while Dana Holgorsen is not a newbie being a veteran of one season and four games as the Huskers’ offensive coordinator, fans are ready to see a little more of the man whose offenses lit up scoreboards as an OC at Texas Tech, Houston and Oklahoma State, and far less of the NU version who has only cracked 30 points three times in 17 tries. So those were the three choices presented in this week’s survey where we asked you which you thought would be most crucial to success for the 2026 Huskers:The ability of Holgorsen’s offense to put points on the boardAurich’s defense, especially their ability to stop the run and pressure the QBWade’s offensive line – an immediate return to THE PIPELINE isn’t expected, but can he begin moving them back in that direction? Here’s who you picked:It’s Geep Wade by a nose with 42% of the vote. Given the history of the Huskers’ offensive line, it’s not surprising most are of the opinion that teams aren’t going far without an effective wall of blockers up front whether for the run or the pass. They are truly Geep’s group – Dana Holgorsen has said puts his faith in Wade to get them ready as a unit for what he wants them to do in his offense.Very close behind in the voting was Rob Aurich with 39% and going back to a 4-man front was likely seen as a fine start to fixing the run-stop problems. Aurich has succeeded in his first three stints as a DC – but matching up in the Big 10 is a whole different animal. If he makes a go of it in Year 1, he will likely find himself moving up a couple of tax brackets.Holgorsen himself only grabbed 19% of the vote, but there may be a reason for that – if the O-line isn’t able to clear the way rushing (which they did in 2025 for Nebraska’s first 1st Team All-American running back since Mike Rozier last season) and keep their QB clean, it’s not going to much matter with what wizardry Holgorsen comes up.Hot take for 2026: The 2025 offensive line was underrated. Along with Emmett’s success, they ranked among the top 15 in rush yards before contact. And Raiola’s adventures in holding the ball too long and looping back to escape the pocket might have hung part of the lowly sack numbers on an O-line who didn’t deserve them. Between the hire of Wade, the upgrading of the position and a much more mobile and aware QB, look for a noticeable step forward in 2026.

Alonso Optimistic for Aston Martin’s Dutch GP Upgrade Before Sprint Qualifying Fell Apart
Fernando Alonso went from Aston Martin’s leading driver in practice to the last man on the Sprint Qualifying timing sheet in a matter of hours. This can mean only one thing: the upgrade package the team brought this weekend may have helped, but the Spaniard never got a clean attempt to prove it.Alonso finished FP1 in 12th after setting a 1:14.511 on the soft compound, covering 25 laps. Stroll ended the sole practice session 18th with a 1:15.199 from 24 laps.Aston Martin struggled in Sprint Qualifying. On medium tyres, Alonso set a 1:16.014 across five laps, placing 22nd. Stroll also completed five laps on mediums, taking 19th with a lap time of 1:15.391. Alonso was 0.623 seconds slower than Stroll, 1.286 seconds short of Oliver Bearman’s 17th-place benchmark of 1:14.728, and 4.447 seconds behind George Russell’s pole time of 1:11.567.The Upgrade Was Buried Under Two Separate ProblemsAlonso told the media that the AMR26 felt better in free practice, then became difficult to drive once sprint qualifying began. Aston Martin said both cars suffered drivability problems, while Alonso also lost the use of his rear-wing’s Straight-Line Mode system.“A little bit of everything in qualifying,” the two-time champion said. “You know, the free practice was more or less okay, but in qualifying we had, yeah… problems on the engine driveability was pushing on the brakings. [It was] difficult to stop the car sometimes because the engine, I think, was over-delivering. And then, apparently, didn’t work the SLM for me, so I could not open the rear wing. So combination of both made the laps very tricky.”When asked about whether he’s seeing the upgrades as a positive change, he continued: “As I said, you know, free practice felt okay, and I felt a step forward. I think it’s very early days, and probably a little bit immature, a little bit all the controls, etc.“So, yeah, it’s a sprint weekend. On a normal weekend, we had three practices to nail the package. Obviously, on a sprint, we need to deal with the situation in today’s qualifying and tomorrow in the sprint race. We try to understand also a few things.”Today, Aston Martin usedHonda’s updated power-unit, together with aerodynamic changes. These updates amounted to three front-wing components, as well as the floor fence, diffuser and lower diffuser-winglet edge. That made Friday’s result frustratingly inconclusive. The team could not properly separate the effect of the Honda update from the consequences of its drivability troubles and Alonso’s failed rear-wing system.Aston Martin Has One Night To Make the Package LegibleAston Martin brought a 16-part upgrade package to Hungary before the summer break and this continued the outfit’s newfound habit of bringing substantial changes to its cars. But the Silverstone team only had an hour of practice before Sprint qualifying to evaluate its revised engine and aerodynamic package.Speaking after sprint qualifying, his Canadian team-mate Lance Stroll commented on his performance and feeling from the cockpit.“We went quite aggressive with the program, which in hindsight, I think it was quite good. Unfortunately, we lost that first lap with the traffic, but generally speaking, we’ve been struggling a little bit with the feeling on the wheel. We have a small issue there that we haven’t come on top of on the right-hand corners. We understand the issue and we can see it, so hopefully we can fix it for tomorrow’s race and obviously for the rest of the weekend.”He believes it won’t all be smooth sailing from here, however: “It’s going to be a very long weekend from here. I do expect that hopefully tomorrow we can do a little bit of an improvement, but obviously everyone puts their pace more together when qualifying comes, so we’ll see what we are able to do tomorrow.”

Pete Buttigieg beats JD Vance & Marco Rubio by more than any other Democrat in new poll
Out former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg won in head-to-head matchups against Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, two likely Republican 2028 presidential candidates, in a recent poll. Emerson College Polling asked likely voters who they’d vote for in head-to-head matchups between five top Democrats – Buttigieg, Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York – and the top two Republicans. Related Pete Buttigieg is pushing Democrats toward a 50-state strategy Buttigieg came out ahead in both matchups, getting 49% support in both, while Vance and Rubio each got 44%. Ossoff and Newsom also ended up ahead in both pairings, but had a smaller gap when matched with Vance rather than Rubio. Harris, though, got less support than Rubio but more support than Vance, while Ocasio-Cortez fell behind both Republicans. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today | Emerson College Polling Only 40% of respondents approved of Donald Trump’s job performance in the poll, while 56% did not. This gap was even wider among women: 62% said they disapprove of Trump, while a paltry 32% said they approve. The pollsters asked people if they identified as supporters of the Democratic Socialists of America, a far-left political organization that includes Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) among its members, and 46% of Democrats said that they did. “This is concentrated among younger members of the party: 53% of Democrats under 50 support the DSA compared to 37% of Democrats over 50 who support,” Emerson College Polling executive director Spencer Kimball said. The poll also asked whether people supported Luigi Mangione’s actions. Mangione shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and he pled guilty in federal court this week to two counts of interstate stalking resulting in death in connection with Thompson’s death. An overwhelming 72% of respondents said they found his actions unacceptable. Almost half – 49% – of respondents said they oppose the current US military action against Iran, with another 14% unsure. Buttigieg has polled well this past year when it comes to the 2028 election. Another Emerson Poll in July found that 19% of likely Democratic voters support Buttigieg as their party’s presidential candidate, ahead of all other choices. A May poll from AtlasIntel put Ocasio-Cortez in first place, followed by Buttigieg and then Newsom. An Emerson poll from May had Buttigieg at the head of the pack, Newsom in second place, and Ocasio-Cortez in third. A Yale Youth poll from April 2025 had Harris in first place, followed by Ocasio-Cortez, and then Buttigieg. Buttigieg has been signaling that he is likely to run in 2028. When asked if he’s ruling out a run while campaigning for other Democrats in Iowa – a key primary state – he said, “Nope!” He also spoke with the Rev. Al Sharpton earlier this year at an event where several likely Democratic presidential candidates appeared. Sharpton asked if he should “be reserving a table at Sylvia’s” for Buttigieg. It has become a Democratic primary tradition for candidates to have lunch with Sharpton at Sylvia’s, a soul food restaurant in Harlem. “You save me a seat, I’ll be there,” Buttigieg responded. Buttigieg campaigned in New Hampshire back in February to support several Democratic congressional and Senate candidates, but also, as many speculated, to build a network of support in an early-primary state for a possible 2028 run. He was also asked then about a possible presidential run. “I’m a long way from any kind of decision,” he said at the time. “But I’m very happy to be here, and I know what I should be doing for the next year, which is to be there for causes and candidates that are deserving, to speak out, not just against this administration but for the measures that are gonna make it more affordable and easier to live in this state and in this country.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Max Verstappen: Red Bull still lacking grip and balance after F1 Dutch GP sprint qualifying
Motorsport photoHaving chosen the Dutch Grand Prix as the venue to announce his renewed commitment to Red Bull until at least 2030, Max Verstappen endured mixed fortunes on the opening day of Formula 1 track action at Zandvoort.During practice Verstappen complained of poor gearshift quality – a regular issue with the car this year – low grip and an oversteer balance during the only practice session, in which he finished an unusually lowly 11th quickest, 1.376s off the pacesetting Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli. That picture changed through set-up changes ahead of sprint qualifying, where he made it through to the final top-10 shootout and qualified sixth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari.“I guess we out-qualified one [frontrunning] car,” he told F1 TV after the session. “Just a bit tricky to find the grip, the balance. I mean, it was already a step forward from FP1.“But of course, still lacking a little bit to be a little bit further up the road. It’s something that we need to understand what we can do with the balance for tomorrow. To find a bit more grip, really – a bit of balance, a bit of grip to close the gap [to the frontrunners] a bit.”In committing to Red Bull for the long haul, Verstappen has lost some of the ability to show his team the proverbial whip, as he has done in the recent past when credible threats of him moving to other teams have hung in the air. Contracts are made to be broken but, unlike Amazon purchases, they do not come with a 30-day returns window.Max Verstappen, Red Bull RacingMax Verstappen, Red Bull RacingThe nature of Verstappen’s comments and resigned tone of voice suggests he is simply going to get on with it. Red Bull has form in being able to conjure greatly improved set-ups overnight during grand prix weekends – but, unlike in previous years, not quite enough to make the car a genuine contender for race wins. With the caveat that some performance will have come through track evolution – although it is the same for all competitors – Verstappen found just over seven tenths of a second between FP1 and SQ1 to post a 1m13.585s lap. In that session his stand-in team-mate Liam Lawson went slightly faster with a 1m13.420s.But as track grip ramped up further in the session, Lawson’s SQ2 time of 1m13.136s wasn’t enough to make the cut for SQ3. Verstappen’s 1m12.745s was good for eighth behind the McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari drivers plus Pierre Gasly’s Alpine.Despite finding another respectable chunk of time in SQ3 to claim sixth on the sprint grid – 1m12.094s – Verstappen fell 0.527s off George Russell’s pole position as all the frontrunners bar Hamilton improved by a similar margin. Most ominous for Red Bull is the fact that the gap from Russell to Oscar Piasrti’s McLaren in fourth place was just 0.099s.Antonelli in fifth place was 0.227s off his Mercedes team-mate but was carrying damage from an off-track excursion on his first push lap. Read Also: Kimi Antonelli: F1 Dutch GP sprint qualifying off cost "25 points of downforce" For his part, Lawson was at a loss to explain why he could only find three tenths between SQ1 and SQ2.Liam Lawson, Racing BullsLiam Lawson, Racing Bulls“Normally you'd sort of improve through quali,” he said. “And we started SQ1 quite strong. Then we didn't make the same step everybody else did. So, obviously, we'll look into it. There's a lot to learn today.“But so far, honestly, I feel quite good in the car. UFC Sacramento preview and predictions: Anthony Hernandez or Gregory Rodrigues — who wins?
UFC Sacramento focuses on the middleweight division this Saturday in California after a notable numbered event last weekend in Philadelphia. In the headliner, Anthony "Fluffy" Hernandez returns to take on the always entertaining "Robocop" Gregory Rodrigues. For Hernandez, the fight serves as a rebound after his tough setback against the now-champion Sean Strickland earlier this year. Rodrigues, meanwhile, hopes to make good on another main-event opportunity after falling short last year in his first headlining appearance against Jared Cannonier. This card offers the latest example of a more common these days, with the tier ranking between UFC Fight Nights on the road and the Meta Apex variants blending into a blur in terms of quality. Order-wise, the UFC made the odd choice to put heavyweights Serghei Spivac and Vitor Petrino in the co-main event over Reinier de Ridder vs. Roman Dolidze — two multi-time headliners. In other words, UFC Sacramento is a card. Some fun results are surely in store, but they'll be hardly consequential in any division.👑 UFC Sacramento's lineup Crown grade: D. 👑Gregory Rodrigues has a big shot at launching up the middleweight ranks.Jeff Bottari via Getty Images185 pounds: Anthony Hernandez (-200) vs. Gregory Rodrigues (+165)There are really only two likely outcomes to this main event. Either Hernandez gets the action to the mat and finds a finish, or Rodrigues sleeps him before the final bell. It's never a secret what Hernandez wants to do in the Octagon — unless you're Strickland, who elicited a wildly bizarre performance from "Fluffy." The typically tenacious grappler attempted only a single takedown in three rounds against the now-champ. Normally Hernandez is all over his opponents, leading to a good old-fashioned bully beatdown.Of course, Strickland deserves some credit for nullifying Hernandez's game. But it was more about what Hernandez didn't do than what Strickland did do. That being said, Hernandez has been virtually unmatched with his smothering ground game, and Rodrigues has shown weaknesses in that department. The Brazilian is a massive body in the 185-pound division, so he'll be fine in the strength department against Hernandez’s grappling. He'll simply need to rely more on technique and timing when seeking his patented knockout blow. The man carries absolute nukes for fists, and even a slight graze can stun anyone across from him.So it's simple here. Either Rodrigues has his way on the feet en route to another knockout, or else Hernandez grounds "Robocop." I have to lean toward the latter, thanks to Hernandez coming through in all but one of his past nine appearances.Pick: Hernandez265 pounds: Serghei Spivac (+115) vs. Vitor Petrino (-140)As mentioned off the top, UFC is forcing heavyweights in our face with this one. Realistically, this matchup is designed to see whether Petrino can climb up the ranks. Not that the justification should matter much in the land of big men — throw any two heavyweights together at random right now, and you're bound to get the same type of fight with 85% of the division.Petrino is a classic case of a failed light heavyweight finding new life at heavyweight. He was finished by Anthony Smith and Dustin Jacoby at 205 pounds before he made his debut in the heavyweight division three fights ago. Undefeated since, Petrino began the run with the layup of all layups in Austen Lane, before finishing Thomas Petersen and battling to a decision with Steven Asplund. A real heavyweight row in 2026. (Yes, the "murderer's" exclusion was intentional there.)In regards to strength of schedule, Spivac has Petrino handily beaten. He's only lost to notable names throughout his career, beating the usual suspects that he probably always should have. For a big, rangy dude, Spivac carries sneaky grappling chops, which should lead him to victory against Petrino, via a late submission or decision.Pick: Spivac205 pounds: Reinier de Ridder (-450) vs. Roman Dolidze (+340)Going down UFC Sacramento from the top, it's kind of funny to see the amount of grappling potential there could be.Both "RDR" and Dolidze have pulled off some epic submissions throughout their careers, so any ground entanglement could make for a fun time. But I still lean toward the ever-lethal de Ridder.Dolidze has slowed down significantly in recent fights, and in the areas he's excelled, such as punching his way into clinches, he'll be most vulnerable against de Ridder. The former ONE double champ threatens perennially with vicious knees, and he'll be able to impose his game to beat up Dolidze similarly to how he upset Bo Nickal. At this stage, Dolidze just doesn't appear to have much left for someone like "RDR."Pick: de RidderMason Jones fights like a house on fire. (Photo by Bradley Collyer/PA Images via Getty Images)Bradley Collyer - PA Images via Getty Images155 pounds: MarQuel Mederos (+260) vs. Mason Jones (-325)Mason Jones absolutely rules, and I'm stunned to see him on this slow roll through UFC stint No. 2.It's been banger after banger for Jones, who’s gotten his raised every time out since he first left the UFC in 2022. It’s seven straight wins for the Welshman, and after his latest triumph against Axel Sola, he gets MarQuel Mederos.Don't get me wrong, Mederos is a solid prospect in his own right. Prior to his draw against Chris Padilla, he was on a great run of wins, dating back to his lone career defeat, which occurred the same year Jones left the promotion.Mederos enjoys a good striking exchange or two and generally follows a fight flow from start to finish. With Jones, there isn't much flow, though. It's all chaos. He brawls it out until he can’t, then leans on a solid wrestling game.Jones knows his strengths and plays to all of them well. He's become a very solid overall fighter, but his fight IQ may be his best weapon. This is his fight to lose.Pick: Jones125 pounds: Carli Judice (-600) vs. Jeisla Chaves (+425)After a tough start to her UFC career, Carli Judice has gotten on track and now finds herself viewed by many as a legit future flyweight contender. The 27-year-old has been "Crispy," as her nickname suggests, head-kicking Yuneisy Duben and kneeing Nicole Caliari into oblivion, followed by a great effort over Julianna Miller. Similar to a Jones or Petrino, Judice certainly isn't being rushed by the UFC, but that's probably in her best interests while she’s still developing. If MMA math is to be believed, Jeisla Chaves is in trouble, having fought to a split-decision with Duben her last time out. Even a prior split win over Sofia Montenegro on Contender Series suggests that Chaves has more growing to do than Judice. With all that said, Chaves has shown some strong ground-and-pound work in her career. It just wasn't against anyone with a win. Like, literally. Chaves hadn't fought an opponent with a professional win until Montenegro. Judice is a step above that.Pick: Judice265 pounds: Anthony Wint (-1200) vs. Terrance Chatman (+750)How insane is it that we see odds like this weekly on UFC cards? This is supposed to be the premier MMA organization on the planet. These disparities should not exist.Anyway, Anthony Wint is a beast of a man. The former New York Jet is, unsurprisingly, a bona fide brick [expletive]house, if you will. Being an NFL player doesn't always translate to MMA, as we know, but the athleticism of this guy has been on display in all seven of his fights thus far.Sure, anything is possible in this absurd heavyweight division. But Terrance Chatman is being brought in to join Wint's highlight reel. Plain and simple.Pick: WintShanelle Dyer is on the rise at strawweight.Jasper Wax via Getty ImagesPreliminary NotesIf Judice is a bright spot for the flyweight division, Shanelle Dyer is one for strawweight. The Brit put on a sensational effort in her win against Ravena Oliveira, making her curtain-jerker status here against Elise Reed somewhat of a head-scratcher. Nonetheless, she's a talented striker who's worth your time.Lerryan Douglas is back in action after a great finish of Julian Erosa. A win over Jamall Emmers could put the surging Brazilian in position for a notable name fight, as he continues to prove his legitimacy after holding LFA gold.Quick picks:Lerryan Douglas (-400) def. Jamall Emmers (+310)Shamil Gaziev (-135) def. Kennedy Nzechukwu (+110)Nasrat Haqparast (-125) def. Chris Padilla (+105)Márcio Barbosa (-900) def. Ryan Kuse (+600)Gauge Young (-165) def. Steelers vs Jets: 3 big storylines in this week's preseason game
Tonight the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets square off in Week Two of the preseason. Pittsburgh knocked off the Green Bay Packers 28-9 last week and are headed into this week's game with some huge decisions to make. Here are the big storylines to watch this week.Battle of the quarterbacksIt's going to be Drew Allar vs Will Howard this week to see which guy is the future of the franchise and a spot on the 53-man roster this season. There's no Aaron Rodgers or Mason Rudolph this week and this game could dictate if the Steelers keep four quarterbacks this seaosn.Offensive line rotationLast week was rough for the Steelers offensive line and we've seen some changes in rotation in practice since. Last week the right side struggled, so we expect to see more guys taking reps in different spots in hopes of finding a combination that will work before the start of the season.Secondary swaps Another positional unit that is rotating players around is the secondary. With Jalen Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr. still on the PUP, Asante Samuel Jr. and Daylen Everett will be showcased again as they have been very strong this offseason. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Steelers vs Jets: 3 big storylines in this week's preseason game

Easton Fritcher enjoying his summer splash with Rochester Royals
Aug. 21—ROCHESTER — It was in seventh grade that Easton Fritcher was discovered as "different."The dazzling kind of different. Fritcher was hitting baseballs with such steam that opposing parents became concerned that one of their kids was going to get hurt. He was that good."It was in seventh grade that the boss of the Blizzard (a traveling youth baseball organization) reached out to me," said Fritcher, a Hayfield native who plays his summer baseball for the Rochester Royals amateur team and has one more year of eligibility with Division I University of St. Thomas. "He sat me down and said I could (eventually) play college baseball. Before that, I just played for fun. That realization didn't change me too much. But it was kind of cool and I did work hard after that."The 6-foot, 215-pound Fritcher worked hard enough and flashed enough natural ability to lead his Hayfield High School team to an undefeated 26-0 season and the Class 1A baseball state championship as a junior and to a second-place finish as a senior. He was named All-State both seasons. That landed him a scholarship to the University of Minnesota, where he played a limited amount as a freshman, then redshirted his sophomore year in order to reconsider his baseball path.Fritcher ultimately chose to transfer, landing across the Mississippi River at fellow Division I school St. Thomas in St. Paul.Fritcher has gobbled up his experience there. An outfield starter the last two years, he batted a solid .270 both years and now has one final college season to look forward to."It's been great at St. Thomas," said Fritcher, a biology major. "It's definitely more my style. It has more of the small-town vibe, the classroom settings have been a great change and as far as teammates are concerned, I haven't met anyone that I haven't gotten along with. But that time at Minnesota was a great experience. It made me a better person and taught me that not all things are going to work out for you. You have to persevere and keep working until you find your spot."As much as Fritcher is looking forward to his final go-around with the Tommies, the outgoing 22-year-old also likes what's happening in his baseball life right now.For the fifth straight season, he's playing his summer baseball with the Rochester Royals, a Class A amateur team with a long history of excellence.Fritcher, due to work and coaching commitments, has only played in about six of the Royals' 27 games (16-11) this summer. But when he's there, he's not only their best player but he is all in.Fritcher is a major enthusiast for playing for the Royals, an organization he regards highly. They have fun, it's relaxed, but they are there to win.All of that suits him perfectly."The culture is super good there," said Fritcher, an outfielder and late-inning hard-throwing left-handed pitcher for the Royals. "We play pretty seriously. It's competitive baseball and I just enjoy playing there. They are flexible with your work schedule. I'd like to show up for every game if I could."Royals player/manager Logan Milene would also like that. He knows how much his team changes when Fritcher is on hand."He impacts games," Milene said. "Every aspect of it, from hitting, to base running, to outfield, to pitching. He can do everything on a baseball field. We'd be a lot better if he was at every game, to close them down (as a final-inning pitcher) and to get his four or five at-bats a game. He's our all-around best player for sure. And he's got a lot of energy. He's super competitive. When it's game time, it is 'go' time for him."The Royals on Sunday will embark on the state tournament. They take on Stockmen's Irish at 1:30 p.m. at Chaska in the first round. Win there and they'd play again at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 against the St. Patrick Irish at New Prague.Fritcher says he will be in uniform for all of the state tournament and has high hopes for his team. He believes the Royals have enough hitting and pitching, but are going to need to do a better job of making plays in the field. If all goes well, he can imagine them going far.Fritcher would delight in that."I would absolutely love to win a state championship with the Royals," he said. "To experience it with this group of guys, that would be super cool."

MAHA activists criticize Trump for promoting coal to power energy-hungry AI data centers
Cars drive past data centers, July 16, 2023, in Ashburn, Va. (AP Photo/Ted Shaffrey, File)2026-08-21T17:11:16Z NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly 200 activists in Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s “Make America Healthy Again” movement are criticizing President Donald Trump’s promotion of coal to fuel the rise of artificial intelligence data centers, according to a letter sent Friday. The letter, signed by at least two former staffers from Kennedy’s 2024 presidential campaign, marks the first major MAHA movement mobilization over fossil fuels and the latest in a series of rifts between the diverse group of activists and the Trump administration over environmental policy. The letter to Trump, Kennedy and various other Cabinet officials, first obtained by The Associated Press, criticizes a 2025 executive order that aimed to boost coal to power data centers over pollution concerns and asks the administration to consider renewable options, including solar and geothermal energy. “We understand the importance of American leadership in artificial intelligence, national security, innovation, and economic growth,” the letter reads. “But American AI leadership should not come at the cost of a more toxic burden for American children.”The White House and the agencies receiving the letter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Prominent MAHA figures behind the letter include Zen Honeycutt, a former Kennedy campaign staffer and founder of the advocacy group Moms Across America, and Charles Eisenstein, a former speechwriter on Kennedy’s campaign. Honeycutt said she asked the Kennedy-aligned political action committee MAHA Action to sign onto the letter but did not receive a reply.Although it may not reflect the views of all MAHA activists, the new line of criticism against one of the administration’s signature policies less than three months before November’s midterm elections could present another challenge for Republicans as they seek to win over the voting bloc in key races. Read More As health secretary, Kennedy has carried out several policy changes that cater to the MAHA movement, including attempting to scale back childhood vaccine recommendations, a central priority for some activists. He also has sought to remove artificial dyes from food and encouraged Americans to have healthy diets free of ultraprocessed foods. But many in the MAHA movement, which Trump credits with helping him win back the White House two years ago, say they have grown frustrated with the administration over its embrace of pesticides such as glyphosate and its deregulatory environmental agenda. Some have said they plan to vote on issues over party this fall, raising the political stakes of their increasingly public tensions with the Republican administration. As president, Trump has enthusiastically embraced what he calls “big, beautiful coal” despite outcry from environmentalists about planet-warming greenhouse gases and toxic chemicals released by coal-fired power plants. He also has been a vocal advocate for data centers, which power artificial intelligence and cloud computing, framing them as a necessary component of winning the AI race against China.“If I were the mayor of a town or the governor of a state, and I had a chance to get a big plant in, an AI plant or a data center,” Trump said this week, “I would absolutely want it because the jobs are enormous and the money paid, the taxes paid, are just enormous.” Data centers have become a political flashpoint in this year’s elections. Voters across the political spectrum have criticized them for jacking up electricity bills, draining water supplies, and creating unhealthy amounts of air and noise pollution.Friday’s letter asks the administration to require transparent review of data center location and power sourcing decisions, and respect existing environmental review requirements in the permitting process.Honeycutt said that after Trump’s executive order last year, she researched the impact of coal ash on communities and was disturbed by what she found. She said she was also concerned about other aspects of data centers, including their land use and their effects on the people living near them.“The data center push has been an overwhelmingly negative impact on our communities, and there are many in the MAHA movement that are extremely disappointed about that,” she said. “We vote for those who put health and safety first.” ALI SWENSON Swenson covers politics and the information landscape for The Associated Press. Teofimo Lopez, Rolly Romero, Amanda Serrano and more on a loaded boxing weekend: 5 things to watch
Congrats guys, you made it to the freakin’ weekend! And what’s a weekend without an appointment with the sweet science? Despite August trickling by slowly, things are looking up over the next few days with the likes of Teofimo Lopez and Amanda Serrano in action.Add to that one of England’s hottest young talents in George Liddard, and there’s more than enough to get your pearly whites stuck into. Let’s take a closer look at the weekend’s action.1. Lopez attempts to grab Romero’s WBA titleFriends become enemies on Saturday night inside the T-Mobile Arena — something the famous Las Vegas Strip is accustomed to witnessing. Teofimo Lopez is hopping up to welterweight in an attempt to grab Rolly Romero’s WBA welterweight title from his grasp, and in the process putting their old friendship to one side. For years Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) and Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) were inseparable across amateur tournaments and sparring sessions in Sin City, but now they meet as professionals after both of their careers have endured years of ups and downs. “Enigma” is a word that can be attributed to either Lopez or Romero, so predicting which version of either fighter will turn up this weekend is as difficult as choosing a winner. It could be spectacular. It could be a dud. Let’s see. Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez collide this weekend for the WBA welterweight title.Melina Pizano via Getty Images2. Liddard moves through the levels with a shot at the vacant European middleweight titleGeorge Liddard (14-0, 8 KOs) continues his climb up boxing’s championship ladder on Saturday night, attempting to add the European title to his British and Commonwealth straps at middleweight.Liddard brings an unbeaten record to the Copper Box Arena in East London, buoyed by an army of West Ham United soccer fans who will be loud in the corner of the 24-year-old. Matchroom have matched Liddard nicely through 14 fights, giving him the chance to take the traditional route to the top of the 160-pound division. Italy’s Dario Morello (26-1, 4 KOs) is fighting outside of his homeland for the first time as a pro, and is predicted to have only one edge over Liddard: experience. The 33-year-old lost to Britain’s Luther Clay fairly convincingly in 2019 for the WBO’s Global title at 147 pounds, and another one-sided loss to a British opponent is expected on Saturday night.3. Serrano defends her WBO and WBA featherweight titles on … TikTok?I think the last time I logged onto TikTok was during the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic when my wife — then girlfriend — convinced me to take part in a viral dance craze. Listen, we all did things we regretted over those confusing months, and no, I won’t be recreating it at the yet-to-be-organized Uncrowned Summer Party. But I may have to redownload the app this weekend, as Amanda Serrano (49-4-1, 32 KOs) returns for her 55th professional outing at the age of 37, defending her WBO and WBA world featherweight titles inside California’s Pechanga Resort & Casino.Argentina’s Lucrecia Anabella Manzur is in the opposite corner, bringing a modest 14-4 (7 KOs) record to the proceedings, as Serrano eyes a record-breaking 33rd knockout of her career and a 50th win.The Puerto Rican southpaw has enjoyed an illustrious 17 years in boxing, and another highlight-reel performance over the limited challenger will bring the curtain down on her career nicely. Amanda Serrano and Lucrecia Manzur meet live on TikTok this Friday.4. Is Santillan vs. Russell the best-matched fight of the weekend? If we’re expecting Serrano and Liddard to have pretty straightforward weekends, the same can’t be said about Victor Santillan or Gary Antonio Russell.Santillan (16-2, 7 KOs) defends his interim WBA super bantamweight strap against Russell (21-1, 13 KOs) on the Romero-Lopez undercard, in what can be confidently described as a near-50/50.55-45? OK: 60-40, with Russell holding the bigger percentage thanks to the sharper tests he has faced as a 122-pounder.The full champion at super bantamweight is none other than the “Monster,” Naoya Inoue — so the winner of this interim clash may be advised to be careful what they wish for.5. Will Fury vs. Joshua get officially announced? What’s another weekend without a continuation of the endless Fury vs. Joshua will-they-won’t-they saga?I was fresh-faced and in my 20s when these two English heavyweights were first rumored to meet inside the squared circle, and a decade later it appears that they aren’t getting noticeably closer.Forgive my cynicism, but Thursday’s rumored contract addendum from Matchroom Boxing to Saudi Arabia’s event management/entertainment company Sela has appeared to only further muddy the murky waters. Eddie Hearn has come out swinging, disputing the legitimacy of the ‘leaked’ details — claiming that he “doesn’t care who this interview upsets” and referring to Turki Alalshikh and the Saudis as “cretins” is an interesting tactic from the promoter. This saga is holding the heavyweight division and British boxing hostage; the sooner there is a conclusion, the better.

A.J. Brown Is Looking Forward, Not Backward During Eagles Joint Practices
A.J. Brown has moved on from the Philadelphia Eagles. However, with his former squad in town this week for joint practices and a preseason game against his new team, the New England Patriots, Brown faced plenty of questions about the tumultuous end of his Eagles tenure. While reporters and fans want to know more about his feelings surrounding that chapter of his career, Brown made clear that his attention is firmly on his new home. He repeatedly downplayed any animosity towards Philadelphia. Brown is instead focused on himself and what lies ahead for the Patriots.A.J. Brown’s Complicated Eagles TenureAfter another quiet outing, AJ Brown took to social media with a cryptic message:"If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way."Brown was targeted 9 times but finished with just 2 catches for 7 yards in… pic.twitter.com/Sv9i4vaPO7— Preme Football (@premefootball) September 28, 2025Brown experienced overwhelming success in his four seasons with the Eagles. He elevated Philadelphia’s offense, resulting in the franchise’s two best single-season receiving yard campaigns and a Super Bowl victory.Despite that, Brown felt frustrated with his usage in the Eagles’ offense in recent years. His receiving production and yards per game declined in each of his four seasons with the Eagles. He still managed 1,003 yards across 15 games in 2025 – a strong year, but not quite to his standards.“According to sources, [Jalen] Hurts was a part of the receiver’s frustrations, based in part on Brown not being targeted as much as he felt he should have been against zone coverage,” Eagles beat reporterTim McManus wrote for ESPN.The rift between him and the team became a public storyline. Between him reading a mental training manual on the sidelines of a playoff game, cryptic social media posts, and several other public comments, Brown and the Eagles’ relationship seemed to erode over time. How Did Brown Perform Against the Eagles in Practice?A.J. had himself a day pic.twitter.com/Gcys9mI3c8— New England Patriots (@Patriots) August 20, 2026Brown put on a show against his former team over the two days of practice this week.On Wednesday, Brown caught seven passes on seven targets for a personal-best day this summer (H/T@ByMarkDaniels). He followed that up with another strong showing on Thursday, particularly in the red zone — which for a team that ranked20th in red zone touchdown percentage last season, is a promising development. As encouraging as Brown’s on-field production was, the mindset he displayed in answering questions stood out just as much.“It’s already in the rear-view,”Brown told reporters following Wednesday’s practice. “I’m focused on my everyday process and trying to get better each and every day. I’m not giving life to anything other than this moment.”The first live rep of Wednesday’s practice was a one-on-one between Brown and Eagles star cornerback Quinyon Mitchell on a deep shot to the end zone. The ball hit Brown in his left hand before falling out of bounds.Brown laughingly said he believes he won the rep, with Mitchell grabbing at him for what could have been called pass interference. Regardless, he took accountability for the failure to convert.“I just got to finish the play,” Brown said. “My right hand didn’t get to the ball quick enough; my left hand got on the ball, that’s on me. Attention to detail: catching the ball high, not letting it get low… It’s never about who I’m going against. It’s the little things. That could’ve been a 40-yard bomb, and now it’s a long foul ball. Those are the things that I’m focusing on, and I’m just trying to get better each and every day.”A.J. Brown Is Looking Ahead With Drake MayeDrake Maye’s accuracy is immaculate A.J. Brown is about to eat in the #Patriots’ offense…(@Patriots) pic.twitter.com/dC0KXuFQm4— Carlos A. Lopez (@LosTalksPats) August 19, 2026Brown’s attention to detail also carries over to his budding relationship with his new quarterback, Drake Maye.Maye threw two interceptions when targeting Brown in Thursday’s practice. The first was during red zone drills, where Maye tried to force a tight throw to Brown in the front corner of the end zone, which Eagles cornerback Riq Woolen sat on and took the other way. The other was a slant to Brown to open 11-on-11s. As Brown went to the ground, Woolen ripped the ball loose, popping it up and into the hands of Jalyx Hunt.“There’s definitely been some challenges, but he’s very special,” Brown said about Maye. “He makes my job a lot easier. Learning how he sees the game and getting on the same page — there’s definitely a learning curve, and we’ll continue to keep working at that.”With superstar talent on both ends of the quarterback-receiver tandem, the pairing could be one of the NFL’s most explosive in 2026. However, still in August practices, the two will need to show that on Sundays in the fall, not weekdays in the summer.A.J. Brown Makes Amends and Move OnAJ Brown goes up to Jalen Hurts after practice The two hug and talk for a little pic.twitter.com/58UlUOFIhI— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) August 20, 2026 Brown had said on Wednesday that he and Hurts had not spoken since the trade — perhaps symbolic of both Brown’s intentions of moving forward, as well as some bad blood that existed during the end of his Philadelphia tenure. However, after practice on Thursday, Brown and Hurts were seen finally catching up.The reconciliation between the two, even if it was brief, is a sign of maturity and moving on for both parties.Much of the dialogue around Brown’s past couple of seasons has been shrouded in negativity. Through his answers with the media, he is trying his best to put that to rest and focus on the future.“It’s love,”Brown said on Wednesday about his former team. “I won a Super Bowl ring with them. It will always be love no matter how anyone feels. I love Philly, and I will always love Philly, but I’m here now. That’s where my feet are, and that’s what I’m focused on.”The week showed that Brown’s attention is on what’s to come, not what he left behind in Philadelphia. With buy-in for the season ahead, Brown is ready to roll in helping the Patriots live up to their full potential. The post A.J. Brown Is Looking Forward, Not Backward During Eagles Joint Practices appeared first on The Lead.

Texas WR Ryan Wingo’s hands will define his 2026 season
AUSTIN, TX - APRIL 18: Wide receiver Ryan Wingo #1 of the Texas Longhorns catches the ball during the Texas Longhorns Football Fan Day on April 18, 2026, at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, TX. (Photo by David Buono/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Playing next to star wide receiver Cam Coleman, and with the benefit of what projects as a resurgent ground game, Texas Longhorns junior wide receiver Ryan Wingo should be open frequently in 2026 thanks to his elite speed. The question is what he does with those opportunities. The 6’2, 214-pounder had seven drops as a sophomore, the most on the team, contributing to an abysmal catch rate of 57.4 percent as 40 of his 94 targets went incomplete. In contested-catch situations, Wingo only came down with four of his 14 opportunities. When Coleman was asked on Thursday about the best way for Wingo to improve his hands, the answer was simple — the Jugs machine. But the Texas wide receivers also regularly catch passes in practice without gloves to ensure that their fundamentals are sound without the benefit of sticky modern gloves.According to A to Z Sports college football insider Ryan Roberts, the Longhorns have also used some modern technology to develop Wingo’s hand-eye coordination, which was expected to improve after the St. Louis product underwent LASIK surgery last offseason. So what are the practice results indicating as the season rapidly approaches? The reviews are mixed, according to Roberts, as a team source indicated “massive improvements” in Wingo’s hands and ball skills through a consistent offseason after returning from wrist surgery, in line with a report from Inside Texas that Wingo is “catching everything.” A scout who recently attended a Longhorns practice, however, saw the drop issues return for Wingo, a concerning sign.If Wingo isn’t entering the season fully confident in his ability to make catches, he could start pressing again, the diagnosis that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian offered for Wingo’s slow start last season when he only had nine receptions on 23 targets with one drop through the first three games. At the time, Wingo wasn’t receiving much help from quarterback Arch Manning, whose own early-season struggles regularly manifested when targeting Wingo, including multiple throws on crossing routes that peppered the wide receiver’s lower body.Sarkisian’s predictability as a play caller wasn’t helping, especially against Ohio State, when Buckeyes defenders regularly anticipated Wingo’s routes or baited Manning to throw into coverage. Of Manning’s first three interceptions in 2025, which occurred over the first three games, two of them came while targeting Wingo.Coleman’s presence this season will create more one-on-one opportunities for Wingo as defenses shift their attention to the Auburn transfer, simplifying Sarkisian’s job in scheming his speedy pass catcher open, and the Texas head coach has spoken approvingly of Manning’s offseason work improving the consistency of his mechanics. But none of that really matters unless Wingo’s hands become more consistent, a critical factor upon which this Texas team’s ceiling and Wingo’s draft stock both hinge.

Mets vs. White Sox prediction: Odds, recent stats, trends, and best bets for August 21
The New York Mets (58-70) are in the Windy City to open a weekend series against the Chicago White Sox (66-61) tonight. The Sox continue to control the AL Central leading the second-place Twins by 3.5 games while the Mets despite having played better since the Trade Deadline including four of the last five continue to hold down last place in the NL East. A few numbers help explain why these teams have such vastly different records but none moreso than runs scored. The Sox have outscored the Mets 605-531. The Mets will look Sean Manaea (4-5, 4.22 ERA) to slow down the ChiSox offense tonight. The veteran has been solid over his last five starts allowing ten runs over 31.1 innings. He averages about one strikeout per inning, but his numbers vary game-to-game. Sean Burke (7-6, 3.15 ERA) gets the ball for Chicago. The righthander saw his streak of 10 starts in which he allowed two or fewer earned runs snapped this past Sunday when he allowed four earned runs over 4.1 innings in Motown against the Tigers. 16 years, no 50-plus stand: Pakistan's opening woes continue in England
Pakistan's struggle to produce a strong opening partnership in England has now lasted 16 years. They have not had a 50-plus opening stand in their last 27 Test innings in England. Their last opening partnership of 50 or more came in 2010.The same problem returned in the first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds.Openers fail again at HeadingleyPakistan could not get a good start in either innings. In the first innings, Azan Awais was dismissed for a duck by Ollie Robinson off the very first ball of the three-match series.Robinson got one to come back sharply from around the wicket and trapped Awais. He then dismissed Shan Masood for five in his third over, leaving Pakistan at 6-2.Pakistan's second innings brought more disappointment. Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed for a duck by Jofra Archer, leaving Pakistan without another 50-plus opening stand.Imam, Shafique offer brief hopePakistan did manage to recover in their first innings after the early damage.Following a two-hour rain delay, Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique put together a 91-run stand for the third wicket. Imam scored 42, while Shafique made 61.However, Pakistan could not build on that partnership. They collapsed from 117-3 to 171 all out.England's pace attack then finished the job, with Ollie Robinson taking 5-51 and Josh Tongue claiming 5-46.England take controlEngland made an impressive start to the post-Bazball era as their bowlers dominated Pakistan on the opening day. After bowling Pakistan out for 171, England reached 112-2 at stumps and were only 59 runs behind.Joe Root, starting his second stint as England captain after Ben Stokes' retirement, was unbeaten on 37. Jordan Cox was 23 not out. While England enjoyed a strong start, Pakistan's long-standing opening problem remained. With no 50-plus opening partnership in their last 27 Test innings in England since 2010, Pakistan's openers have a major challenge to overcome.

NASCAR purse for Cup Series race at New Hampshire in August 2026
NASCAR is gearing up for the 27th race weekend of the 2026 season at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and the Cup Series is bound to put on a show. In 2025, Ryan Blaney beat Josh Berry for his third win of the year. Now, the sport will head to New Hampshire with a substantial amount of money on the line. The purse for the Cup Series race at New Hampshire will be $11,233,037 on Sunday afternoon. NASCAR doesn't release the earnings for the winning driver anymore, meaning it's impossible to tell how much of the $11,233,037 will go toward the team in victory lane. Last year, the purse for New Hampshire sat at $9,797,935, which is a $1,435,102 increase. It will be fascinating to see which NASCAR driver will earn the most money at New Hampshire this weekend. Blaney is looking to go back-to-back in the race at New Hampshire, but Berry and William Byron had good cars in 2025. New Hampshire always puts on a show, and this weekend should be no different.NASCAR odds for Cup Series race at New Hampshire in August 2026This article originally appeared on Motorsports Wire: NASCAR purse for Cup Series race at New Hampshire in August 2026

Ajax Defender Lands in Rome Ahead of Lazio Medical – (Video)
Ajax Defender Lands in Rome Ahead of Lazio Medical – (Video)Lazio are on the cusp of making their fourth first-team signing of the summer, as Josip Sutalo arrives to complete his transfer from Ajax.Lazio’s Transfer Business Thur FarThe Biancocelesti have already brought in Alfonso Pedraza and Danilho Doekhi on free transfers, while securing Davide Frattesi on loan from Inter Milan with an option to buy. Nevertheless, Gennaro Gattuso still required another defensive reinforcement, especially with Alessio Romagnoli’s fate yet to be decided, and Patric and Samuel Gigot unable to recover from their long-term injuries.Lazio & Ajax Reached an Agreement for Josip SutaloWhile several players were on Angelo Fabiani’s shortlist, Lazio decided to go all-in on Sutalo, a 26-year-old Croatian international who has been playing his football at Ajax since 2023. Thanks to the two clubs’ excellent relationship (also evidenced by their quick negotiations for Kenneth Taylor’s transfer in January), an agreement was found rather swiftly.Sutalo in Rome to Complete Lazio TransferThe Dinamo Zagreb youth product will join Lazio on loan for €3 million, with an option to buy for another €7.5 million, thus raising the total cost to €10 million. On Friday evening, Sutalo was spotted at Fiumicino airport in Rome. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio shared a video showing the player’s arrival on his Instagram account.View this post on InstagramSutalo will thus undergo his medical in the coming hours, while the official announcement will likely arrive on Saturday.Lazio Still Need a New StrikerAfter sorting out their backline, Lazio will now shift their attention towards the striker’s role, which has been their biggest conundrum since the start of the summer. On Thursday, Bamba Dieng landed in Italy to complete a free transfer, but ended up failing a medical. Most sources believe Sassuolo centre-forward Andrea Pinamonti is now the most plausible solution.

He built a mosque to worship in peace, but some Muslims there still harass him for being trans
Rajab Ali, a 46-year-old transgender man, spent his life savings of 6 million Pakistani rupees (about $21,000) to build a mosque in the Okara district of Pakistan’s Punjab province. He hoped to pray there in peace, but he has repeatedly faced discrimination, both during and after its construction, he told Global Voices. When he began construction in December 2022, neighbors stole items and equipment from the worksite and local women harassed him. Others said they’d never visit a mosque built by a trans person. These days, when he tries to lead prayers, people undercut his authority by questioning his trans identity. “I fear they could harm me,” he told the publication. Related Transgender people in Pakistan get a ride-sharing service for protection Ali knew he was different from age six, but came out in 2021 at the age of 42 and began presenting as male and teaching Islam. He made money dancing in the trans community and then devoted it to the mosque’s construction, hoping to earn some neighborly goodwill. But some locals have criticized the “inappropriateness” of using such money to construct a sacred space, especially since Islam considers professional dancing for money to be forbidden (or haram). However, religious scholar Asif Riaz told the aforementioned publication that Muslim societies often overlook mosques built with corrupt or illegal money, and added that once mosques are built, worshippers should focus on their sacred purpose rather than the identities of their donors. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Zanaya Chaudhry, a transgender rights activist with the Khawaja Sira (third gender) Society of Lahore, told the aforementioned publication, “Society judges transgender people based on how they earn, questions their morality, even when their intentions are sincere.” “I just have one wish,” Ali told to Global Voices, “that after my death, people will remember me and pray for me.” Anti-trans attacks increase nationwide despite landmark 2018 law Pakistan has an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 trans people. The country’s parliament passed the Transgender Persons Act in 2018, a law granting trans people equal rights, anti-discrimination protections, and access to public spaces. However, five years after its passage, a federal court struck down some of its provisions, arguing that trans identity contradicts Islamic law. Meanwhile, anti-trans violence has erupted across the nation alongside a rise in anti-trans rhetoric from national figures, an increase enabled somewhat by similar rhetoric from President Donald Trump, The Guardian reported. Dr. Mehrub Awan, a trans woman and central secretary for trans affairs at the Awami National Party, told The Guardian, “Conservatism is on the rise and the right wing’s gender propaganda has been co-opted in many local languages, giving birth to anti-trans vigilantism.” A 2025 study from the University of Central Punjab and the University of Malaysia showed trans people still face exclusion and harassment at mosques, churches, and other holy sites. Reports indicate that they also face educational, workplace, and medical harassment. I was there all day, hoping, praying, hoping for a turnaround,” Busch said in an interview on NBC’s “Today” show on Friday. “I said, ‘I got you man. Come on, I got you. I got you. Come on, be strong,’” an emotional Busch added, before a brief pause. “It just wasn’t fair.”The interview marked Busch’s first comments since Kyle Busch died on May 21 after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming complications. Busch’s death at the age of 41 devastated the racing community and one of NASCAR’s most accomplished families. The borthers were born in Las Vegas.Kyle Busch won Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019 for Joe Gibbs Racing, and holds the record in winning 234 combined races across NASCAR’s top three national series. His older brother was a Cup champion in 2004 and inducted this year into the Hall of Fame. In the interview, Busch outlined how his brother became increasingly ill while practicing in a simulator on May 20. Asked by his crew chief whether he was OK, Busch responded no and he was taken to a hospital by ambulance.Kyle Busch initially believed he was dealing with a sinus cold while racing at Watkins Glen, New York, on May 10. Karmelo Anthony dropped plans to testify over track stabbing, lawyer says as teen seeks retrial
People gather outside the Collin County Courthouse on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, in McKinney, Texas. (Elías Valverde II/The Dallas Morning News via AP)2026-08-21T18:13:45Z McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Karmelo Anthony had planned to testify during his Texas murder trial over a track meet stabbing but backed out amid sudden concerns that prosecutors would raise potentially damaging evidence about the teenager’s past, one of his lawyers said Friday.Anthony, 19, is asking for a new trial after a jury in June sentenced him to 35 years in prison for killing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, who attended a rival school and was stabbed during a confrontation at a track competition last year. Since then, the case has stirred tensions over race and led to both families becoming targets of harassment. During the second day of a hearing near Dallas, defense attorney Toby Shook said the teenager’s plans to testify unraveled over worries that prosecutors would renege on agreements to not present evidence that might further inflame an already highly charged case. “It was essential that the jury hear Karmelo and hear his explanation,” Shook said. It was not clear when state District Judge Michael Chitty would issue a ruling on whether to grant a new trial. Prosecutor Bill Wirskye has defended the trial as fair and said the possibility of Anthony testifying wasn’t part of the original agreement with the defense. Anthony’s attorneys say it should have been obvious the teenager would want to explain to jurors himself how he acted in self-defense. Anthony is Black; Metcalf was white. Among the details that jurors never heard, according to attorneys on both sides, were that Anthony once sent a text message fantasizing about stabbing someone and Metcalf had a history of fighting and using racist language. During the trial, lawyers on both sides told jurors the tragedy had nothing to do with race, but social media posts amplified the killing nationwide in racial terms. Read More In an interview with NewsNation, Metcalf’s father, Jeff Metcalf, said he supported the original agreement between prosecutors and defense attorneys. He said information about his son’s juvenile history does not change what happened the day his son was killed.“We all want our children to be the best they can be, and obviously, we all fall short,” Jeff Metcalf told NewsNation. “It still doesn’t change the facts of the case.” Metcalf’s parents and Anthony’s parents have attended both days of the hearing. Anthony’s attorneys have also told the judge he should get a new trial because of errors that limited access to the proceedings. They have argued that the case’s original judge allowed a “shadow docket” that shielded character information about both sides. The trial in June took place amid heightened court security. Wirskye said there had been threats against a judge who granted Anthony bond, fake autopsy reports circulating online and attempts to intimidate witnesses. Parents of some witnesses also filed protective orders for their children because of threats, according to Wirskye. Anthony secured one legal victory this week when the judge who presided over his trial was removed from the case. Chitty was then assigned to consider the motion for a retrial. Anthony’s attorneys had asked for state District Judge John Roach to be removed in part because of a TV interview in which Roach said jurors “got it right” when they delivered a guilty verdict. ____Associated Press writer Jim Vertuno in Austin, Texas, contributed

Cambodia-US operation uncovers money laundering link to Sinaloa Cartel
People gather outside the Collin County Courthouse on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, in McKinney, Texas. (Elías Valverde II/The Dallas Morning News via AP)2026-08-21T18:12:33Z PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodian and U.S. anti-drug agencies have uncovered a network that authorities say uses cryptocurrency to launder money for Mexico’s notorious Sinaloa Cartel, officials from both countries said Friday.Meas Vyrith, secretary-general of Cambodia’s National Authority for Combating Drugs, told The Associated Press that his office had confiscated about $7 million in cryptocurrency linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, a powerful criminal conglomerate designated a “foreign terrorist organization” by the Trump administration. He said Cambodian anti-drug police working with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration also made several arrests and seized assets, drug laboratories and storage facilities. Authorities also confiscated over 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of illegal drugs and more than one metric ton (2,200 pounds) of precursor chemicals used to produce them. Law enforcement agents raided four locations in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, and neighboring Kandal province from Aug. 1 to 5, he said.“Collaborative efforts involving DEA offices in Phnom Penh and New Jersey successfully uncovered a local network laundering cryptocurrency on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement Thursday. The Sinaloa Cartel has become a major producer of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, blamed for tens of thousands of overdose deaths each year in the U.S. The group has obtained precursor chemicals, including from China, to produce fentanyl in Mexico and smuggle it into the U.S. Cambodia serves largely as a transit area for drugs such as methamphetamine that originate in the Golden Triangle, the region where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Read More But in recent years, it has also been a stronghold for Chinese-led organized crime groups, best known for running scam centers that have bilked people around the world out of billions of dollars while employing many thousands of foreigners in slave-like conditions.Over the past year, Cambodia has intensified a crackdown on such operations, shutting down scam centers and arresting several alleged kingpins, including some who had established legal financial institutions. A report issued in July by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said several transnational organized crime groups from outside Southeast Asia are important criminal actors in the region, primarily involved in trafficking large quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine. Supreme Court chief justice allows work on Trump’s $400M White House ballroom to continue for now
People gather outside the Collin County Courthouse on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, in McKinney, Texas. (Elías Valverde II/The Dallas Morning News via AP)2026-08-21T18:10:53Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is allowing the White House to continue construction on President Donald Trump’s $400 million ballroom project for now. Roberts signed a temporary order on Friday allowing work to continue while the court considers an emergency appeal from the Trump administration. Lower courts had ordered a halt to the project, finding that it must have congressional approval. That ruling was set to take effect on Friday. Roberts signed the order because he oversees appeals of Washington-based cases. The case comes before the nation’s highest court as Trump, a Republican, exercises unparalleled assertions of presidential power and increasingly seeks to mold the capital in his own image. The Trump administration has scored a series of victories on the high court’s emergency docket, though the justices have ruled against some of the president’s signature policies after fuller review. The administration has argued that the president has total authority to renovate the White House and other federal buildings as he sees fit and that the ballroom project must be completed due to national security concerns. When Trump first announced the plans for a new ballroom, he did not emphasize national security. He said the project would be funded by private donations, including from himself. The National Trust for Historic Preservation argues that Trump has no unilateral authority to undertake the work, which has included demolishing the East Wing. Lawyers for the preservation group accused the White House of trying to “outrun the courts” by accelerating construction. The Trump administration says 65% of work has already been completed on the planned 90,000-square-foot (8,400-square-meter) ballroom, where the East Wing stood before the president ordered its demolition. Crews are working 20 hours a day, seven days a week on the project, where about $200 million in private donations has been spent or committed, Justice Department attorneys said in court documents. Read More A district court judge ordered a stop to aboveground construction of the planned ballroom in April in a ruling that was suspended before being upheld by an appeals court panel. The order from U.S. District Judge Richard Leon in Washington allows belowground work on bunkers and military installations to continue. Leon was nominated by President George W. Bush, a Republican. Two appeals-court judges appointed by Democratic presidents found the project was for Congress to decide and “not a matter for Executive self-help.” A third judge, appointed by Trump, found that the preservationist group that challenged the project had no legal right to sue. Solicitor General D. John Sauer picked up on that argument, calling the decision halting the work “extraordinary and unlawful.” He said the completion of the project was “vitally required by national security.” ___Follow the AP’s coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court at https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court. Tesla recalls nearly 3M vehicles in China over door handle safety risks
People work on the Tesla Model Y production line at the Tesla Gigafactory assembly plant during a media organized tour, in Shanghai, China, Tuesday, April 14, 2026. (AP Photo/Andy Wong, File)2026-08-21T17:52:53Z HONG KONG (AP) — Tesla and other Chinese carmakers are making a major recall of more than 4 million vehicles over safety concerns mostly related to their door handles, according to Chinese authorities on Friday. The U.S. carmaker is recalling about 2.98 million China-made and imported EVs including Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S over door handle safety risks, according to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation. The recall, the largest this year according to Chinese media, comes a few months after Chinese authorities said in February that starting next year, it would be banning hidden car door handles that are commonly seen on Tesla electric vehicles and many Chinese EV models.China has stepped up scrutiny recently on hidden, or flush, car door handles following EV accidents in the country and elsewhere, in which cars’ hidden electronic doors failed and trapped people inside. In a notice on the Chinese regulator’s website, it cited safety risk. In extreme situations, such as a severe collision that causes an electrical system failure, the car handles could hinder car users from quickly opening the doors to escape, or prevent rescuers outside the car from gaining access, the notice said.Tesla will perform software updates on the vehicles to mitigate risks, the notice added. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday. Xiaomi, the Beijing-based Chinese technology giant, is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles. Hangzhou-based Leapmotor is recalling over 370,000 cars. Other Chinese carmakers, including Geely and XPENG are also recalling some vehicles. Read More The reasons given in each case were similar, mostly relating to issues with their car door handles.A report published by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China’s ruling Communist Party, said the large-scale recall “serves as a unified safety upgrade” for existing vehicle models ahead of the 2027 implementation of the ban on hidden car door handles.“For the rapidly evolving NEV (new energy vehicle) industry, competition should be defined not only by the pace of technological innovation but also by the high standards set for safety,” the newspaper said.____Fu Ting reported from Washington. Liverpool dealt huge blow as head coach confirms transfer decision
Liverpool dealt huge blow as head coach confirms transfer decisionAdam Wharton Staying at Crystal Palace Leaves Liverpool With Midfield Questions to AnswerLiverpool’s midfield planning looks to have taken another clear turn, with Adam Wharton expected to remain at Crystal Palace for the season ahead. The England international had been admired by leading Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City, but Palace’s position now appears firm.As reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, Pierre Sage has made the south London club’s stance plain. “We sold big players and now I think it’s not the moment to do that”. He also added, “Adam can play at a big club but I think one year with us, one year with a new dynamic, will be good for him and we need him”.That will be taken seriously across the market. Palace are under no obvious pressure to sell, and when a manager speaks with that degree of clarity in public, it usually reflects a broader alignment inside the club. For Liverpool, it suggests one of the more intriguing midfield possibilities of the window is effectively closed, at least for now.Adam Wharton decision reshapes Liverpool midfield searchWharton had appealed for understandable reasons. He is composed in possession, progressive with his passing and capable of helping a side control matches from deep areas. Liverpool’s recruitment team will have known exactly what profile they were assessing, particularly in a summer where squad balance has become a pressing issue.Yet there would also have been internal debate around fit. In a midfield that already asks a lot physically, especially in transition, there are valid questions over how much defensive coverage and athletic range would be lost if technical quality became the priority. That tension has become even more relevant after Curtis Jones’ departure, which has left Liverpool looking light in the middle of the pitch.Alexis Mac Allister and Trey Nyoni remain strong options, while Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai continue to offer energy and drive. Even so, numbers alone do not settle the matter. Liverpool need reliability, availability and a clear sense of role allocation if Andoni Iraola’s first season is to start with proper structure.Tyler Adams emerges as realistic transfer optionWith Wharton staying put, attention naturally shifts elsewhere. One name that has surfaced is Tyler Adams of Bournemouth. The 27-year-old is known in Premier League circles for his tactical discipline, intensity and ability to protect a defence, qualities Liverpool may now value more strongly than before.Reports have suggested Liverpool hold an interest and that a deal in the region of £35m to £40m could be sufficient. In the context of the current market, that places Adams within a realistic bracket for a club trying to strengthen without drifting into inflated spending. There is substance to the football case too. Adams offers bite, leadership and mobility at the base of midfield, attributes that can stabilise a team and give more attack-minded players freedom ahead of him. For Liverpool, that profile may have particular appeal if the objective is to restore physical edge after losing a homegrown senior option in Jones.Liverpool transfer window entering important phaseWhat matters now is whether Liverpool act decisively. The Wharton situation appears to have been clarified by Palace, and there is little value in expending energy on a move that the selling club have no intention of entertaining. Recruitment departments often need these moments of certainty, even when the answer is not the one they hoped for.The remaining window will therefore be defined by execution. Liverpool know they need depth, and arguably a degree of specialist security in midfield, even if they are not explicitly targeting a classic number six. Adams may not carry the same long-term intrigue as Wharton, but he looks a player who could address immediate needs and fit the demands of Premier League football. If this summer is about equipping Iraola quickly and sensibly, then Liverpool’s next move in midfield will say plenty about how they view the balance of the squad, and how urgently they believe it needs correcting.

Curtis Jones’ Liverpool exit confirmed in €30m move to Inter
Curtis Jones has left Liverpool by completing his €30m move to Inter Milan. Liverpool could also make a further is €5m in achievable add-ons for the midfielder, while they have a 10 percent sell-on clause. Jones was in the final year of his contract at Anfield and Liverpool risked losing him on a free transfer if they did not sell him this summer. They had rejected a is €25m bid from Inter in June and, while new head coach Andoni Iraola said he wanted to keep the England international, Jones had told him he wanted to leave. “Yes [I wanted to keep him], Curtis is a good player, but I understood this,” the Spaniard said. “He is coming for some years in the same situation, so I knew from that moment it could happen. “I understand with Curtis, I talked to him. I value him a lot as a player, he loves this club, it was very clear since the very beginning for me. But I understood that probably the outcome was going to be what it has been in the end.” Jones made 228 appearances for Liverpool, including 49 last season, and his departure ends his 16-year association with his hometown club. Liverpool are unlikely to sign a midfielder to replace him, with Iraola impressed by how the 19-year-old Trey Nyoni has played in pre-season and with their priority being to buy wingers instead. Curtis Jones leaves Liverpool ending a 16-year association with the club (Getty)“I’m very happy with Trey,” Iraola added. “He has been very good in pre-season, not only in the games, even when he trains with us he’s facing top-level players and he’s at the level. “So I have no doubts with Trey, he will be very valuable this season for us, hopefully plays a lot and gives the level that I’m seeing every day in training.“In terms of realising what we need, there are certain situations which for me are clear, especially now in the wing because we don’t have enough players to play in those positions.” Liverpool have stepped up their search for wingers, seeing two bids – of £50m and £60m – for Yankuba Minteh rejected by Brighton. They are also interested in Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.

College Fantasy Football: Proceed with caution on these overvalued names for 2026 — Here's Eric Froton's All-Fade Team
When reading this “Busts” column, it is important to point out that I perceive these players to be overvalued at their current draft position, not that they are outright “off-my-board” unless otherwise specified. Play Yahoo's new College Fantasy Football game: Create or join a league now!As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, pro-style quarterbacks have major difficulty reaching the all-important 20-fantasy-point-per-game mark in Yahoo Standard scoring without a defined rushing component. Running backs in committees are always dicey propositions, and it’s vital to target receivers and tight ends who are targeted downfield in pass-friendly offenses. With that, here are the most overvalued players currently being selected in Yahoo Standard Leagues. Julian Sayin, QB, Ohio StatePlease understand this “Bust” label pertains to Yahoo Standard scoring where pro-style signal-callers are depreciated by way of 4-point passing touchdowns. Philosophically, we’ve seen Ohio State morph from the up-tempo attack of Ryan Day’s formative head coaching years, to the glacial offense we witnessed last year that slowed OSU down to the 135th slowest pace in the country. The Buckeyes now bring in the infamous run-heavy NFL castoff Arthur Smith to run the offense. With Sayin having run the ball just 31 times for 27 yards and zero rushing touchdowns last year, and new OC Smith nerf-ing the entire offense, I don’t think Sayin gets enough work in the run game to clear the 20-FPPG benchmark that is imperative in 1QB leagues. Pass on Sayin, and vulture a pair of high-upside QBs who are capable of cracking the 400 rushing yards barrier in the later rounds.Cameron Dickey, RB, Texas TechThis is not to disparage the exceptional job Dickey did for the Red Raiders last season after USC transfer Quinten Joyner sustained an injury that knocked him out for the year. However, this year Joyner is healthy and expected to be an established rotation member who will eat away at Dickey’s 200-touch workload from a year ago. Compounding matters is the continued presence of passing down maven J’Koby Williams, who cranked out 1,254 total yards over 14 games last year, and dual-threat QB Will Hammond who will siphon gold zone touches. Dickey is an abnormally risky investment for a player who produced 1,037 yards and 13 touchdowns in the 2025 regular season thanks to the increased competition for touches. Ahmad Hardy, RB, MissouriThe truly most disappointing CFF news of the offseason has been the unfortunate gunshot wound in his leg that Hardy suffered back in May. While there was initial optimism that Hardy would return in short order, he did not dress for the team’s most recent scrimmage. With Missouri starting the season with four very favorable matchups against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kansas, Troy and Mississippi State, it’s entirely possible we don’t see Hardy in any meaningful capacity until at least October, and even that is speculative. I’ve drastically dropped him in my rankings and am outright avoiding Hardy unless we get some form of tangible positive camp news heading into Week 1. Andrew Marsh, WR, MichiganWe’ve seen Marsh being selected in the top-25 of Power Conference receivers this offseason, in the hopes that the new Utah-imported coaching staff will ply him with a swarm of targets, despite rave reviews about Utah transfer WR, JJ Buchanan. However, QB Bryce Underwood struggled in spring and is expected to have a more Devon Dampier-like effect from a fantasy perspective, utilizing his legs as much, or more, as his arm. With Michigan playing one of the top-five toughest schedules nationally and deploying a run-first ethos in the defense-oriented Big Ten, Marsh is a risky proposition inside the top-25 of P4 drafts. Braylon Staley, WR, TennesseeStaley is a solid, but relatively uninspiring, wideout who was used as departed UT QB Jesse Aguilar’s safety valve underneath last year. Just 9.6% of Staley’s targets traveled 20+ yards downfield for a very conservative 8.1 average target depth. With Tennessee’s field stretcher on the outside, Chris Brazzell, now in the NFL, I expect Mike Matthews to expand upon his 25.3% deep target rate and inherit Brazzell’s vacated downfield targets after receiving just 74 looks last year compared to Brazzell’s 99. I recommend passing on Staley and taking Matthews 2-3 rounds later according to current draft trends. Jeremiah Hasley, TE, DukeIt was a storybook season for the Blue Devils in 2025, as Duke somehow managed to finagle their way into a thrilling overtime ACC Championship game victory against Virginia last year. The bad news is superstar QB Darian Mensah and WR Cooper Barkate are at Miami, while former starting WR Que’Sean Brown is at Virginia Tech. The only key offensive cogs who return are their workhorse running back and Hasley, and all the news coming from camp points to a return to their run-first ways behind Sheppard now that the best QB they’ve had since Daniel Jones is gone. The scheme shift and QB downgrade craters Hasley’s CFF appeal, as he spent 60% of his reps inline last year and Duke will experience a significant downgrade from their 35 PPG scoring average last year. Leave him on the waiver wire and take high-upside shots elsewhere later in drafts. Antwan Raymond, FLEX, RutgersRutgers fielded the dirt-worst fantasy defense in the country last year, as the Scarlet Knights got throttled by superior Big Ten competition. While Raymond was a certifiable workhorse who logged a massive 244-carry workload in 2025, he was sparsely used in the receiving game. While he caught seven passes for 88 yards in a fluke explosion against Washington, he only registered 11 catches for 137 yards in his other 11 contests. Also muddying Raymond’s profile is the fact he scored nine touchdowns in his first five games, feasting on the likes of Miami (Ohio), Ohio and FCS Norfolk State before punching in just four scores over his last seven games. It’s not hard to find starting running backs in the early season when P4 teams are feasting on their G6/FCS underlings, but Raymond presents startability issues against the better defenses on Rutgers’ B10 schedule such as USC, Indiana, Michigan, at Wisconsin and at Penn State. Raymond has been selected in the top-six of several of P4 drafts i’ve witnessed and participated in, and is a first rounder in the vast majority of leagues. I think Raymond should be viewed as a late-second rounder due to his startability issues, lack of a consistent receiving workload, and his sizable production splits when facing quality Big Ten programs.

Controversial, game-changing strike 3 call ends Little League World Series no-hitter
After getting washed out on Thursday, the Little League World Series has resumed with a full day of action in Williamsport. Iowa and California kicked things off with an instant classic in the morning—one that ended with some history and some drama. After Iowa’s Cooper Thissen continued his dominance in the tournament by racking up another 15 strikeouts, Anthony Johnson Jr. came in to try to secure the game’s final outs and complete a combined no-hitter. California mounted a resistance, loading the bases with two outs.MORE: 2026 Little League World Series teams, full list of USA & International participantsThen, on a 3-2 pitch that appeared to be quite a bit outside, the home plate umpire ended proceedings by ruling a dramatic strike three to end the contest. With the full understanding that Little League umpires are the salt of the Earth and wonderful volunteers, take a gander at the decision below. Cowboys former 3rd-round edge rusher gets 90% trade odds after Von Miller signing
Cowboys former 3rd-round edge rusher gets 90% trade odds after Von Miller signing originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to making bold moves, and they did that this offseason by bringing in Von Miller on a one-year deal. While it might be the end of Miller's career, he's still a very notable addition. But bringing in the future Hall of Famer has done one thing: open the door to a trade from the edge-rusher room.Bleacher Report's Moe Moton projects that 2024 third-round pick, Marist Liufau, will have a 90% chance of being traded after Miller's signing, as it's now a very deep group of edge rushers ahead of him, making his roster spot a big question mark.Marist Liufau has a 9-out-of-10 chance of being traded"Initially, Liufau had a chance to hang on to a back-end roster spot as he learns a new position, but the Cowboys signed proven pass rusher Von Miller, who led the Washington Commanders with nine sacks last year," Moton writes.Signing Miller is meant to be a meaningful addition. Add in their other edge rushers, and now Liufau doesn't really have a clear spot on the roster.Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Malachi Lawrence, Miller, Sam Williams, and James Houston are all likely ahead of Liufau on the depth chart. As much as the Cowboys might want to keep Liufau and continue to develop him, he might be the odd-man-out, as keeping seven edge rushers doesn't make a lot of sense.MORE: Cowboys sign 8-time Pro Bowl pass rusher, 2-time Super Bowl champion Von MillerThey could ship him to a rebuilding team like the Miami Dolphins, as Liufau's potential could intrigue a team eyeing some extra upside depth at the edge rusher spot. But with the Cowboys six options ahead of Liufau, the 87th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft might not have a roster spot in line this season. There's potential here, and he's someone a team will gladly take a chance on. The Cowboys won't get a third-rounder, but they could get a good Day 3 draft pick in the fourth or fifth round, depending on what team they deal with.Moton projects a 9-out-of-10 on the trade probability scale, and considering the Miller additions have forced Liufau into the seventh edge-rusher spot, there's little reason to hold onto the high-upside edge if they aren't going to trade Williams or Houston.More NFL news:Vikings lose Jamal Adams to brutal season-ending injuryEagles might've already found their Lane Johnson heir after 6-foot-9 rookie Markell BellSeahawks 2nd-round S Bud Clark gets bad news on starting job for Week 1Ja'Kobi Lane's breakout might be real after impressive Ravens preseason debutWill George Kittle be ready for Week 1? 49ers TE explains why he has 'chance' to play vs. Rams

Remember when Trump invited an ex-trans student to the SOTU? Who was she?
Donald Trump invited Liberty University student Sage Blair to the State of the Union address yesterday. But who is she? Among the anti-trans proposals Trump advocated for in his State of the Union address Tuesday night was a nationwide ban on schools acknowledging and supporting trans and gender diverse students’ social transitions without notifying their parents. Related Trump targets trans teen, pushes transphobic law, & praises anti-LGBTQ+ leader in State of the Union As Daniel Villarreal noted for LGBTQ Nation, Trump claimed that this phenomenon is “going on all over” the U.S. “We can all agree no state can be allowed to rip children from their parents’ arms and transition them to a new gender against the parents’ will,” the president said. As an example, Trump pointed to Blair, who attended the address with her grandmother and legal guardian, Michele Blair, at the president’s invitation. The moment was likely the first time many Americans had encountered Blair, who is at the center of a lawsuit over whether her Virginia high school should have informed her parents that she began identifying as a trans boy when she was 14. (According to her grandmother, Sage has returned to using her birth name and she/her pronouns.) She is also the namesake of an anti-trans law introduced by Virginia Republicans in 2023. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today As Assigned Media notes, what is known about Sage’s story comes largely from right-wing media and from her grandmother’s lawsuit. According to the New York Times and other outlets, Michele Blair, who legally adopted Sage at age two, sued the Appomattox County School Board, several district employees, and a Maryland public defender in August 2023. Blair’s lawsuit cites the “‘distress’ about her body” Sage experienced “with the ‘onset of puberty in 2019,’” which allegedly included hallucinations, depression, eating disorders, and self-harm. The lawsuit claims that Blair supported Sage’s gender-nonconforming “dress and interests” when she started high school at Appomattox County High School (ACHS) in August 2021. Around the same time, Sage was diagnosed with “‘severe gender dysphoria’ and related symptoms.” The same day, Sage indicated to ACHS counselor Dena Olsen, who is named as a defendant in the lawsuit, that she identified as a boy and was told she could use the school’s boys’ restroom. Sage also reportedly expressed a desire to use he/him pronouns and the name Draco, and allegedly told Olsen and another counselor, Avery Via (also named as a defendant), that her parents were not supportive of her gender identity. During the brief period between August 11 and August 25, 2021, when Sage identified as a boy at school, she reported multiple incidents of bullying and sexual harassment, including threats of violence. Blair claims she was unaware of Sage’s gender identity and that the school never notified her of her daughter’s social transition. Blair alleges that Sage only told her that she was identifying as a boy at school after Blair discovered a hall pass with the name “Draco” on it. Blair claims that Sage told her she would not have used the boys’ restroom if Olsen had not told her to do so, allegedly citing female students’ discomfort with Sage using the girls’ restroom. According to the lawsuit, Sage “suffered a psychotic breakdown and decided to run away” after her parents learned of her gender identity. She was kidnapped by an adult man who transported her to Washington, D.C., and Maryland, and was drugged and raped by multiple adult men before being rescued by the FBI, according to Blair’s lawsuit as reported by Law Commentary. Sage was assigned representation by Maryland public defender Aneesa Khan, who allegedly accepted her trans identity and had her placed in a Maryland Department of Juvenile Services facility for boys, where she was again “sexually assaulted, exposed to drugs, and denied medical and mental health care,” the lawsuit alleges, according to Law Commentary. Sage allegedly ran away from the facility and was taken to Texas by an adult man who “again raped, drugged, starved, and tortured” her before she was rescued by state police, according to the lawsuit. According to Assigned Media, local news reports and social media posts substantiate the lawsuit’s claims that Sage went missing twice. As Law Commentary notes, Blair’s lawsuit rests on her claim that ACHS officials had a duty to inform her of Sage’s social transition and that if they had, the traumatic events that followed would not have happened. But as Assigned Media’s Evan Urquhart notes, it’s impossible to know if that would have been the case. Urquhart goes on to note that trans teens who are not accepted by their parents are particularly vulnerable to online predators, and cites a 2013 study indicating that trans young people experience better mental health outcomes when they are accepted and affirmed by their parents. As the New York Times reports, last year the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld a lower court’s dismissal of Blair’s claim that ACHS officials violated her right to direct the child’s upbringing. A separate claim that the school violated Title IX by acting with “deliberate indifference” to the threats Sage experienced from classmates is currently moving through the courts, according to the Times. Beginning in January 2023, Virginia Republicans have repeatedly introduced “Sage’s Law,” a bill mandating that schools in the state immediately inform parents when their child comes out as trans. According to the Times, Michele Blair has testified in support of the legislation. WH aide begged Trump to “punish” her & “cuss her out” when she “deserves” it in bizarre letters
Two intimate letters sent by White House aide Natalie Harp to President Donald Trump were published by The Daily Beast today, and they shine some light on the bizarre nature of their relationship. At a rally last week, Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) drew attention to how much time Trump and Harp spend together, saying that Trump doesn’t want to do his job and instead “wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar.” Related Rightwing pundit confronted with montage of Trump’s comments to women after calling Democrat sexist The White House spent the week crying foul, arguing that Harp is not a public figure, no matter how much time she’s spending with Trump. Now, two letters obtained by Trump biographer Michael Wolff suggest that the public may be right to ask more questions about Harp and Trump’s relationship. “You are all that matters to me,” Harp wrote. “I don’t want to ever let you down.” Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In one letter, Harp apologizes for upsetting Trump, though it’s unclear what she did. “I want things to always be right between us,” she pleaded. “I haven’t been myself, dwelling on the Past, and the pain of losing my Dad, and I started letting the remarks of people who haven’t bothered me before, get to me-not because I care what others think, but because I see myself as being lowered in your eyes and good opinion.” “That is the fear you see, because I never want to bring you anything but joy. I’m sorry I lost my focus. You are all that matters to me. I don’t want to ever let you down.” “Thank you for being my Guardian and Protector in this Life.” In another letter, she thanked Trump for taking her on a golf trip to Scotland. In the letter, she says she is “starting to envy those whose only ‘job’ seems to be to talk with you, and look pretty. I want that job!!” “But after going through all this self-analysis, my conclusion? I need to reunite my past self with my current into a better version who will make you proud,” she continued. “And please, when I fail, will you tell me? You have the absolute right to cuss me out, if I need be, and when I deserve it, because no one knows or cares about me more.” “Thank you for always being there for me – I’ll never forget when you made that promise to me after losing my Dad, and I know how happy he is right now that I did get to go to Scotland and Ireland, as he always wanted for me.” “To modify a class, ‘I could not have parted with you, to anyone less worthy’ – And, I will add, it is I who is unworthy.” The Daily Beast notes that Trump first noticed Harp in 2019 when she appeared on Fox News and was grateful to Trump because, she said, he signed legislation that allowed her to get access to an experimental bone cancer treatment that she believes saved her life. She spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2020 and was involved in the Trump-Pence 2020 campaign. Her father died by suicide that same year. She joined Trump’s team again in 2022. Her brother Preston told CNN that his sister has an “unhealthy obsession” with Trump. “The relationship here is not a relationship that should exist in a professional setting,” Wolff commented. Tempers are flaring, fists are flying around the NFL during joint practices

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)2026-08-21T18:25:58Z Joint practices are out of control when an easygoing, fun-loving guy like Jameis Winston is throwing punches and getting decked in the middle of a brawl.Tempers have been flaring around the NFL as many teams are practicing against each other ahead of preseason games. Winston was at the center of a fight between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins on Thursday. The Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints were fined $500,000 apiece by the NFL after a brawl-filled joint practice Tuesday. There were several skirmishes between the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans last week that led to two players from each team being tossed out of practice.“It’s not a game, so you don’t have the same, quite, guardrails on it,” Giants coach John Harbaugh said. “And it’s a violent game. And so, in this sort of an environment, you have these rules of engagement that aren’t really rules of the game. And then somebody perceives somebody else goes over the line, or they do go over the line, and somebody needs to protect somebody, and that’s where it goes. And I think as long as it doesn’t get out of control where we get a violent type of situation, it’s fine. We decided that anybody that threw a punch in those scrimmages would be treated like the game.” The joint sessions have become the preferred way to give starters valuable repetitions in a competitive environment. Most coaches prefer to keep key starters or all their starters, in some cases, out of preseason games so facing opponents within a controlled setting has become a priority for most teams. Overall, 28 of 32 teams are holding joint practices this year. Fights are not considered OK during joint practices Coaches have warned their players about fighting, making it clear it’s disruptive and counterproductive.“We don’t tolerate it,” Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “The way I explain it to the players, every time we do one of these — you have 90 teammates in camp. Now you’ve got 180 teammates. We’re just working against each other. OK, they’re in a different jersey, a different helmet. We’re not here to fight. We’re here to get better as an individual and a team, and hopefully we’ll all treat it that way.”Philadelphia held two joint sessions with the New England Patriots this week. There was one minor scuffle, prompting Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley to say: “I hate joint practices, to be honest.” Read More “More times than not nothing good comes out of it,” he said. “When you have the work, it’s good, but then you get the pushing, the shoving and someone says this about you and it’s ‘I don’t know about that but you’re this.’ It’s immature when you get to that level. I have to do a better job, too, because I’m a little troublemaker sometimes, but I was good this week.” Fights are inevitable considering players are going at each other, talking trash, grinding in the hot sun on humid days.It takes plenty of discipline to show restraint.“I love joint practices, being able to play in our defense, in our style against another team,” Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker said. “Yeah, the cons are fighting, but at the end of the day, we’re professionals. ... As long as you can play the game at a high level and respect the other team, fights won’t happen.” Respect a key to keeping joint workouts professional Baker said teams are supposed to maintain the same etiquette in joint practices as they do against each other.“If the ball is in the air and you see the receiver in a compromising position, and I’m coming downhill on the ball, I’m not going to hit him,” Baker said. “I’m going to let him catch it and tap off. I might talk my little (trash) and tell him, ‘You probably wouldn’t have caught that.’ But you’re being a professional. You wouldn’t want to hurt your own teammates so you don’t want to hurt the opposing team in a practice.”Fights occur when players breach that etiquette or hit a quarterback.“You should never get close to the QB,” Baker said. “Quarterbacks are the most important position in football. Losing a quarterback in practice against another team — that’s something where fights will definitely happen.”The Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills were quite chippy during their joint practice but avoided fights. Browns coach Todd Monken said players are told they’ll be tossed out of practice for throwing punches. In some cases, they might end up playing in the preseason game as punishment when they normally weren’t going to suit up. “There has got to be an accountability and a discipline to what we do,” Monken said. “But I also want the guys to have a mindset and a personality while they’re out there as well. It’s a fine line.”___AP Sports Writers David Brandt, Josh Dubow, Dan Gelston, John Wawrow and Stephen Whyno contributed.___See AP’s full NFL coverage here ROB MAADDI Maaddi is senior NFL writer for The Associated Press. Alfalfa sprout linked to food-poisoning outbreak in 15 states, health officials say

(AP Photo/Elaine Thompson, File)2026-08-21T19:12:19Z NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials say a food-poisoning outbreak tied to alfalfa sprouts and involving multiple germs has sickened people in 15 states.State officials announced the outbreak earlier this week, saying they documented more than three dozen cases in Minnesota and Wisconsin. On Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the agency is aware of 55 cases nationally, including four people who have been hospitalized. The CDC said cases are also reported in Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington.Of 34 sick people interviewed, 26 reported eating alfalfa sprouts, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Food poisoning outbreaks tend to be defined by one type of germ, but this outbreak involves people with salmonella and different strains of E. coli. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli — or STEC — can cause stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea. Infections can lead to a severe complication that involves acute kidney failure.Salmonella poisoning can cause diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration and stomach cramps.Officials are linking cases to alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota grower, and sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands to restaurants and grocery stores. The company has yet to issue a recall, the FDA said. Last year, the FDA sent a warning letter to Everything Sprouts, saying inspections the year before identified several points of concern, including a leaking roof that was dropping water onto bean sprouts and workers’ smocks. Stars and Stripes editor says he has been fired for insubordination after doing interview
The Pentagon is seen from the air, July 15, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)2026-08-21T19:12:40Z The Pentagon on Friday fired the editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes, as well as its publisher and a reporter, the editor said. He said he was dismissed for insubordination after an interview he gave that objected to any potential censorship by the U.S. military. Erik Slavin, editor in chief of the military newspaper that is partly funded by the Pentagon but has a long legacy of editorial independence, told The Associated Press that he and the others had received notices of separation.Slavin said he was being fired “for stating in a CBS interview that hypothetical censorship of news for service members would constitute a red line.” He said he stands by the principle “that Stars and Stripes must remain editorially independent.”Earlier this week, publisher Max Lederer announced his retirement effective at the end of September. He too received a separation notice, according to Slavin, as did the Middle East reporter Lara Korte. Arizona AG declines to charge Gov. Katie Hobbs over pay-to-play allegations
Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs gives her State of the State address in the House of Representatives at the Capitol, Jan. 12, 2026, in Phoenix. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin, File)2026-08-21T19:02:17Z PHOENIX (AP) — State prosecutors declined to file criminal charges against Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs over allegations that she took part in a pay-to-play scheme with a group home company that received a rate increase from the state after contributing $100,000 to her inaugural celebration, Attorney General Kris Mayes announced Friday. The Democratic governor has been accused of giving preferential treatment to Sunshine Residential Homes after the Arizona Republic revealed the company contributed to the inaugural fund and Arizona Democratic Party and later received a 30% payment increase. Only Sunshine and one other company were given increases during the 2022-2023 contracting period. The investigation has turned into a political millstone for Hobbs as she seeks a second term as governor. Her Republican opponent, U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs, has run an ad underscoring the investigation into Hobbs. Hobbs denies wrongdoing, saying she wasn’t involved in the decision to grant the increase.“The investigation has not uncovered any evidence of the necessary quid pro quo to support a bribery charge,” Mayes said in a statement. While the situation did not meet the standard for criminal charges, Mayes said her investigation “shows there is a need for legislative reform” around the transparency of political donations made by state contractors. She urged Hobbs and the GOP-controlled Legislature to adopt improvements. Mayes, like Hobbs, is a Democrat. A separate investigation by Republican Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell and the state auditor general is continuing. It’s unclear when the latter investigation will be completed and how it differs from the attorney general’s examination. Company got a rate increase after political contributionsThe company gave $200,000 to the state Democratic party in the months leading up Hobbs’ November 2022 showdown against Republican Kari Lake. After her narrow victory, Sunshine gave another $100,000 to Hobbs’ inaugural fund weeks before she took office in 2023 and another $100,000 to the party in August 2023, according to records. Read More The company’s founder, Simon Kottoor, and his wife, Elizabeth Kottoor, each contributed a total of $10,000 to Hobbs’ gubernatorial campaigns. This is our AP Ground Game newsletter. The company tried again and was approved in May 2023, raising its rate from $149 to $195 per bed.The Arizona Department of Child Safety said Sunshine told the state it would reduce its bed capacity if it didn’t get a rate increase and instead would use such beds to house unaccompanied immigrant children for the federal government. The ultimatum came as the federal government was reimbursing group homes at nearly twice the rate paid by the state, which had already seen some providers starting to do work for a federal program that serves unaccompanied immigrant children, the agency said.Sunshine is a large provider, with a total of about 290 beds at the 28 homes it operates. It also provides 70% of beds for siblings in foster care in metropolitan Phoenix. Losing Sunshine’s beds would significantly affect the state’s ability to place children in homes and would likely lead to siblings in foster care being split up and sent to different homes, the agency said earlier this month.“The potential loss of approximately 290 beds was a serious capacity concern that required careful consideration of the consequences for children and the broader child welfare system,” the agency said in a statement. The agency said then-DCS Director David Lujan approved the increase and that the governor and her staff weren’t involved. All providers that previously had contracts with the agency received rate increases during a new round of contracts in 2024, when Sunshine also saw its rate increase to $234 per bed.Group home was already under scrutiny before rate increaseIn seeking the investigations, Republican state Sen. T.J. Shope pointed out the group-home company was under scrutiny for its care of Jakob Blodgett, a 9-year-old who stayed at a Sunshine home in Glendale in December 2022 after his father was arrested on a drug charge. He died days later at a hospital from complications of Type 1 diabetes, including the serious complication known as ketoacidosis. A lawsuit alleges poor management of the boy’s diabetes while in the foster care system and that child welfare authorities and Sunshine were negligent in exposing the boy to harm that resulted in his death. While the state has denied the negligence allegations, two Sunshine employees responsible for providing direct care for Blodgett during a crucial stretch of his decline in health testified they didn’t have the necessary training or knowledge to manage a Type 1 diabetic. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office interviewed several Sunshine employees as part of its criminal investigation into Blodgett’s death. No one has been charged. The county agency said the investigation remains open.___Associated Press writer Jonathan J. Cooper contributed to this story.
