Serrano draws 3.4m views on TikTok for 50th win
Serrano's win over Manzur was watched by 3.4m viewers on TikTok [Getty Images]Amanda Serrano retained her WBA and WBO featherweight belts with a narrow majority decision over Argentina's Lucrecia Manzur in the first world title fight to be streamed live on TikTok.The Puerto Rican was made to work for her 50th career win, edging a majority decision but missing the 33rd knockout she needed to break the women's record, remaining on 32.Serrano's fight, held over 12 two-minute rounds, may not have delivered a record‑breaking knockout, but it drew 3.4 million total views on TikTok.The 37-year-old continues to be one of the most watched female fighters in the world, with her third fight against Ireland's Katie Taylor last year drawing an audience of six million on Netflix and their rematch in 2024 getting over 50 million on the same platform.Friday's fight in Temeculam, California was scored 114-114, 116-112 and 116-112 in favour of Serrano.Manzur troubled the champion early with repeated right hands, but the Argentine tired as Serrano seized momentum from round nine and finished the fight in control.Speaking after the bout, Serrano said: "I am so happy and honoured. That was the first championship main event fight on TikTok guys, super excited, super honoured."On Manzur, Serrano added: "I knew this girl was tough. She's young. She's 27. She's 10 years younger than me. These girls are getting younger and stronger."She was hungry, and I knew that coming into training. I trained very hard because I knew it was an opportunity for her, so I had to come on my A game."The unified champion will now be hoping to eclipse Christy Martin with a 33rd stoppage in her farewell fight, which she plans to stage in Puerto Rico later this year or in early 2027.Martin was ringside for the contest, saying: "No matter what, I'm always in [Serrano's] corner."Serrano's record now stands at 50 wins, four losses and one draw, while Manzur slipped to her fifth career loss in 19 bouts. It is unclear who Serrano will fight in her final outing. After admitting post-fight her age may have played a factor in her performance, Serrano further elaborated on social media."Wow this was rough," she said."Honesty the mind tells you one thing but the body does another."You can fight anyone you want and squeeze out a victory but Father Time isn't allowing too much of that."Thank you so much to all my fans, you guys are amazing. "You're the reason why I dug in deep tonight. I'll talk to the team and make my decision. I love you."On the undercard, Denmark's Melissa Mortensen became a world champion for the first time by claiming the vacant WBA super-bantamweight title with a points win over Mexico's Mayelli Flores. The announcement of the scorecards - which were 95-94, 95-94 and 94-95 in Mortensen's favour - was booed, with the crowd believing Flores had won after a gruelling encounter in which the Dane was dropped in round two.Flores was taken to hospital after appearing to break her jaw early in the fight, with her team confirming she suffered the injury in the fourth round. Real Madrid playmaker has Mourinho and board’s backing despite fierce competition
Real Madrid playmaker has Mourinho and board’s backing despite fierce competitionReal Madrid have a problem of plenty in attack, with Jose Mourinho facing a major selection dilemma on a game-to-game basis. The likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham are the first names written on the team sheet. Also, the price that Madrid paid for Yan Diomande this summer suggests he is going to be a guaranteed starter for Jose. Now, according to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Arda Guler may face one of the toughest selection battles in Real Madrid’s squad. However, the silver lining for him is that there is no shortage of belief in the Turkish midfielder inside the club.Mourinho believes in Guler’s roleBoth Jose Mourinho and Madrid’s board regard Guler as an important part of the team’s future, even with players ahead of him.If Mourinho sticks with his preferred 4-2-3-1, Bellingham is expected to occupy the No. 10 role, while Vinicius and Diomande provide the width behind Mbappe.Mourinho rates Guler very highly. (Photo by David Balogh/Getty Images)That does not leave an obvious starting place for Guler.Yet Mourinho has already made his admiration clear. The Portuguese coach sees the 21-year-old as much more than a specialist attacking midfielder and has even suggested that, over time, he could evolve into a No. 8 and eventually a deeper No. 6.That long-term view gives Guler several possible routes into the side.Madrid board see him as structurally importantThe backing is not limited to the coach.Real Madrid’s hierarchy believes Guler can help give the team structure and direction through his touch, vision and ability to connect phases of play. His relationship with Mbappe is considered another major asset.Guler has the technical quality to find the French forward early, play between the lines and create the kind of combinations that can make Madrid’s attack more fluid.Guler is tipped for a big role this season. (Photo by David Balogh/Getty Images)That gives him value even if he is not one of the six or seven names considered automatic starters. His future is not in doubtThe key point is that Guler is not being viewed as surplus simply because the competition is intense.Madrid appear to see him as a player who can become increasingly important as Mourinho shapes the midfield over time. The Portuguese manager may have already started working on the Turkish midfielder to use him in deeper roles in certain games this season. There is also the possibility of Jose switching to a 4-3-3 and playing Bellingham and Guler as his two No. 8s.For now, the challenge is keeping everyone happy, especially with Guler likely to want more minutes to justify his talent. The upcoming season should give a clear picture of Madrid’s plans for the 21-year-old, and it remains to be seen how he develops.

Why Franck Kessie has prioritised moving to Juventus
Why Franck Kessie has prioritised moving to JuventusFranck Kessie is waiting for Juventus to add him to their squad as a free agent despite interest from several other clubs in the Ivorian. He has just ended a spell at Al Ahli, where he earned significant money, and now wants to finish his career in European football, with Serie A his preferred destination. In Italy, he is keen to work with Luciano Spalletti at Juventus, which explains why the midfielder has so far waited for the Old Lady before considering other clubs. As a free agent, he can still move after the transfer window has closed, and Juve want to make some sales before adding him to their squad.Kessie waiting for JuventusJuve have held talks with the midfielder in recent weeks, and he is keen to ensure that he joins them. His patience is partly explained by his relationship with Frederic Massara, who has previously worked with him.Sky Sports Italia reports that Massara’s relationship with Kessie is one of the reasons the midfielder wants the move to Juventus. They worked together at AC Milan, and that previous relationship appears to have helped convince Kessie that Juventus remain serious about bringing him to Turin. The midfielder therefore has little reason to rush into accepting another offer. Juventus remain his preferred destination, and his status as a free agent gives him greater flexibility while the Bianconeri resolve their squad situation.Juventus must complete their plansMassara has reportedly assured Kessie that Juventus will make their move at the right time. The midfielder therefore needs to remain patient while the club works on making sales and completing other transfers.Juventus want to sign players who are not free agents first because those deals cannot be completed after the transfer window closes. Kessie, meanwhile, can wait because his free agent status means he is not subject to the same deadline. That situation gives the Bianconeri additional time to resolve their squad. Kessie appears willing to wait for the opportunity to join Juventus, particularly because he wants to return to European football and work with Spalletti. For now, the midfielder remains patient as Juventus complete their transfer business. If the club can make the necessary sales, Kessie could finally get the move he has been waiting for.

Wall Street week ahead: Reports on consumer confidence and inflation on tap
A screen shows stock prices on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, in New York. (AP Photo/Yuki Iwamura)2026-08-22T08:00:07Z NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street will get key updates next week on closely-watched measures for consumer confidence and inflation. The latest consumer confidence report from business group The Conference Board will be released Tuesday. Wall Street expects the report to show that confidence in the U.S. economy fell again in August after slipping in July.Consumer confidence has been weak most of the year as inflation remains stubbornly high. The U.S. war with Iran helped fuel inflation by stifling oil supplies worldwide. That raised gasoline prices, squeezing household budgets. It has also raised costs for shipping a wide range of products, from groceries to clothing. Wall Street will get another important inflation update on Wednesday when the U.S. releases its report on personal consumption expenditures, or PCE, for July. It is the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation. Much like the consumer price index, it has shown that the rate of inflation remains stubbornly above 3%. The Fed has been struggling to get inflation back to its target rate of 2%. It came close in early 2025 but then inflation started creeping higher as the U.S. imposed a wide range of tariffs globally. The rate of inflation leaped higher in early 2026 as the Iran war curtailed global oil shipments from the Strait of Hormuz. The Fed is expected to continue holding its benchmark interest rate steady at its upcoming meeting in September. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Congo receives more than 16,000 doses of Ebola vaccine as it grapples with unprecedented outbreak
Residents and frontline workers embark on Ebola outbreak awareness campaign in Beni, North Kivu province, eastern Congo, Friday, Aug. 21, 2026. (AP Photo/Sebastien Kitsa Musayi)2026-08-22T07:56:28Z BUNIA, Congo (AP) — Congo has received more than 16,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine as the country grapples with the fastest Ebola outbreak in history, the country’s health minister said. The 16,250 doses arrived at the N’djili International Airport in the capital, Kinshasa, late Friday, as part of 70,000 doses expected from the World Health Organization and partners that were announced on Thursday. More doses are expected early next week. The current Ebola outbreak in Congo is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which currently has no approved treatment or vaccine. It can spread easily and go undetected because some of its symptoms are similar to other illnesses, such as malaria. The Ervebo vaccine is licensed to treat Ebola and has been effective in past outbreaks. The WHO said it may provide some protection against the Bundibugyo virus. The latest outbreak, which has recorded 2,516 deaths out of the 5,290 confirmed cases as at Friday, is spreading at an unprecedented rate and is on track to surpass the deadliest outbreak on record, which killed over 11,000 people across West Africa between 2014 and 2016. Data from the Africa Centre for Disease Control shows that transmission has not yet peaked and could reach three times its known rate. Efforts to contain the outbreak have been hampered by armed conflict between the government and rebel groups, which control key cities in the hot spot; attacks on medical personnel and facilities; an itinerant labor population and people displaced by the armed conflict; and a lack of critical infrastructure.

Somali pirates hijack oil tanker off Yemen in latest attack
FILE -Yemeni coast guards patrol the Gulf of Aden,Dec. 5, 2008.(AP Photo/Mohammed al-Qadhi, File)2026-08-22T08:18:03Z MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Somali pirates hijacked an oil products tanker off Yemen, a Somali maritime security official said, the latest in a resurgence of piracy that has seen six commercial vessels seized since April across the Gulf of Aden and western Indian Ocean.Six armed pirates hijacked the Eritrean-flagged M.T. Sibu 1 on Thursday about 136 nautical miles (252 kilometers) east of al-Mukalla, Yemen, and took it toward Somalia’s Puntland coast, the official, who has knowledge of the incident, told The Associated Press on Friday. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not allowed to discuss the matter publicly. The Sibu 1, managed by the UAE-based Qatrat Alnada Almasi Ship Management, was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department last year for allegedly belonging to an Iranian “shadow fleet” used to transport petroleum products seeking to evade U.S. sanctions. The tanker had 20 crew members aboard: 16 Indians, one Syrian, one Sudanese, and one Iraqi. The nationality of one crew member was not immediately known. The vessel’s previous port of departure and intended destination remained unclear. The hijacking came three days after pirates seized the Lutuf, a Cameroon-flagged general cargo vessel, off Somalia’s coast. The vessel had 10 crew aboard, including six Indians, a Turkish national, a Georgian national and two Serbian security guards, according to maritime tracking reports. The Sibu 1 is the sixth commercial vessel hijacked by Somali pirates since April 21, when the Palau-flagged tanker Honor 25 was seized off Somalia. Pirates later seized the Sward on April 26, the Eureka on May 2, the Asana on July 17 and the Lutuf on Aug. 17. Read More The attacks have occurred increasingly far from Somalia’s coastline, including the hijacking of the Eureka while anchored off Yemen and the Asana about 65 nautical miles (120 kilometers) southwest of al-Mukalla. The International Maritime Bureau recorded 38 piracy and armed robbery incidents worldwide during the first half of 2026, including five hijackings. Somali pirates accounted for 94% of crew members taken hostage during that period, the bureau said.Puntland’s Security Ministry said Friday that its investigations indicated that forces beyond Puntland’s control were behind the renewed piracy, but did not identify any group or country. The claim could not be independently verified. Puntland said it had deployed security forces along its coast and condemned airstrikes that it said struck fishing vessels and property near coastal communities where hijacked ships were being held. It called on the countries involved to explain strikes near Garacad on Aug. 18 and Aug. 20. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. SEC football: Ranking the top 10 wide receivers entering 2026
The Southeastern Conference's stacked list of quarterback talent has been the topic of conversation this offseason, but many haven't talked enough about this year's group of elite wide receivers.Compared to recent history, the league's wideouts severely underperformed in 2025. Brenen Thompson (Mississippi State) and Chris Brazzell II (Tennessee) were the only players to surpass the 1,000-yard receiving threshold. With a talented mix of returning veterans, transfers and highly touted freshmen, the narrative could shift in the conference's favor this year, however. Here are the 10 best wide receivers in the SEC entering the 2026 season: 1. Cam Coleman - TexasThrough the first few weeks of fall camp, the Auburn transfer has lived up to the hype. Coleman has made some spectacular catches, including a one-handed snag that got social media buzzing about his potential in the Longhorns' offense in 2026. The 6-foot-3, 204-pounder from Phenix City, Alabama, hauled in 56 receptions for 708 yards and five touchdowns last season with the Tigers. Coleman's stats could amplify if Texas quarterback Arch Manning lives up to the hype, with a new and improved offensive line in Austin. 2. Mario Craver - Texas A&MAfter transferring from Mississippi State to Texas A&M last season, Mario Craver made his mark as one of college football's fastest wide receivers. He finished his sophomore campaign as a 2025 Biletnikoff Award Semifinalist, ranking third in the SEC with 917 receiving yards and four touchdowns. While he doesn't have the biggest frame, Craver remains one of the most electric wideouts in the conference entering his junior year with the Aggies.3. Ryan Wingo - TexasThe other half of Texas' dangerous wide-receiving duo lands himself inside the top three. Wingo secured 834 yards and seven touchdowns in an outstanding sophomore campaign. Despite sharing targets with Coleman, he will remain a top option for Manning. His athleticism and electrifying speed make him one of the SEC's top wideouts entering 2026.4. Anthony Evans III - Mississippi StateWhile talk about Mississippi State has been focused on dual-threat quarterback Kamario Taylor this offseason, the Bulldogs also boast one of the nation's top wideouts. Anthony Evans shared receptions with Thompson last season, but still ranked inside the top 10 in the SEC for receiving yards. Returning for another year in Starkville, Evans will be Taylor's primary target, making for what should be a dangerous Bulldogs' offense in Starkvegas this season.5. Isaiah Sategna III - OklahomaThe preseason All-SEC selection returns for his second and final season as a Sooner in 2026, after racking up 67 receptions for 965 yards and eight touchdowns. He also proved to be a legitimate threat as a punt returner for Oklahoma, recording 318 yards in that category. Ever since the fifth-year senior from Austin, Texas, transferred to Norman from Arkansas, he has made a massive splash as one of the SEC's top wideouts. 6. Braylon Staley - TennesseeBraylon Staley had one of the most impressive freshman seasons in Tennessee football's history in 2025, leading the team with 68 receptions for 837 yards and six touchdowns. The SEC and AP Freshman of the Year returns for his sophomore campaign with the Vols in Josh Heupel's fast-paced and explosive offense. Don't be surprised if Staley finishes 2026 ranked top-three in yards and touchdowns. 7. Ryan Coleman-Williams - AlabamaWhile 2025 wasn't as impressive as his freshman year with the Crimson Tide, Ryan-Coleman Williams still has the talent to be one of the league's best wideouts. Williams' popularity soared after his incredible performances in 2024, including highlight-worthy catches that will live in college football lore forever. Alabama's unknowns at quarterback could prevent him from having another huge season in T-Town, however. 8. Nyck Harbor - South CarolinaThis is a make-or-break year for South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer, but his job security could be saved with this freak-of-nature at wideout to pair with dual-threat quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Nyck Harbor compiled another breakout campaign last season for the Gamecocks, leading the team with 618 receiving yards and six touchdowns, while also averaging 20.6 yards per reception. If the offensive line improves and protects Sellers, Harbor could have another big year in Columbia. 9. Deuce Alexander - Ole MissThere are various newcomers in Oxford, but quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, running back Kewan Lacy and wide receiver Deuce Alexander could create explosives again for the Rebels in 2026. In last season's stacked wide receiving corps, Alexander ranked third on the team with 684 yards and two touchdowns. With a Heisman Trophy frontrunner at quarterback, the Douglassville, Georgia, native could compile big numbers for the Rebels this year.10. Eric Singleton Jr. - FloridaEric Singleton Jr. has been with three different teams in the last three years, but he could have found his perfect fit in Jon Sumrall's offense in Gainesville. While the Gators still don't know who the starting quarterback will be come kickoff, Singleton's addition to the wide receiving corps gives Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr. a talented, intelligent and speedy playmaker who can perform well on the outside or in the slot. Watford goal closed difficult chapter for Rathbone
[Getty Images]Ollie Rathbone says his last-gasp equaliser for Wrexham against Watford last season helped end a difficult period in his career. The attacking midfielder scored within a minute of coming off the bench to salvage a 2-2 draw with the Hornets in December. It was Rathbone's first league outing of the season after he missed several months of action due to a serious ankle injury sustained during pre-season."It was definitely a huge moment in my season, and in my career really," he said of his strike against Watford."It's definitely one that I look back on because I could closed the chapter on a difficult period and then I kicked on from there. "So, I look back on that with fond memories."Phil Parkinson's side host Watford at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday (15:00 BST) in the club's first home game of the 2026-27 season.Rathbone will be seeking a third consecutive start having played from the outset against Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup and then at Cardiff City in Wrexham's Championship opener on Monday. The 29-year-old feels he is well placed to show his best form this season given his struggles last term."To see how much further forward I am than last year, it's chalk and cheese really," added Rathbone, who scored eight goals in 30 appearances across all competitions last season."I'm delighted because I think it did really hold me back, especially at the start of last year."You don't really understand how big and important pre-season is until you miss it. "When I came back into the fold, I just felt really far behind and it took me a while to catch up. "But I feel really good and really excited for the season ahead. "As you're progressing your career and you're getting a bit older, you kind of learn what works for you and what doesn't. I think I've found that balance now."

Man Utd predicted XI vs Hull City: Sesko’s absence sparks dilemma, £83m midfield unleashed
Man Utd predicted XI vs Hull City: Sesko’s absence sparks dilemma, £83m midfield unleashedManchester United will start their Premier League campaign with an away fixture against the newly promoted Hull City. The league contest will take place at the MKM Stadium. It kicks off on Saturday at 12:30 UK time. The Man Utd supporters are eagerly awaiting to see their beloved team in action for the first time since May, at least in a competitive fixture.Man United probable lineup in HullSince Michael Carrick’s appointment, the Red Devils have been playing with a traditional 4-2-3-1 formation.Senne Lammens has a new understudy in Karl Darlow, who replaced Altay Bayindir, but the Belgian’s starting spot remains a given. In the backline, Ayden Heaven should get the nod alongside Harry Maguire, as Lisandro Martinez has yet to reach his best physical condition.Diogo Dalot is the favourite to start at right-back ahead of Noussair Mazraoui, while Luke Shaw is the only natural option on the left side, as Man Utd have yet to buy a new left-back.In the middle of the park, Carrick will field Man Utd’s first two summer signings, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, who cost the club a combined £83 million. Kobbie Mainoo, who returned late from his post-World Cup vacation, will start on the bench, while Mason Mount is out with an injury.Club captain Bruno Fernandes is assured of a spot in front of the double pivot.Who will replace Benjamin Sesko? After missing all pre-season matches, Benjamin Sesko certainly won’t start, so Carrick must find himself another forward to lead the line.Although Joshua Zirkzee is the main replacement, the Dutchman is unlikely to get the nod. Instead, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are the main suspects. The Cameroonian featured several times as a centre-forward during pre-season, so he could be entrusted with the role once more. This would open up space for Amad Diallo on the right wing, while Cunha should start on the left, even though he has yet to hit his peak condition, which could leave an opening for Patrick Dorgu.ShareTweetShareShareEmailLeave a ReplyCancel replyYour email address will not be published. ‘This is the successor to ARod’ – Steelers fans react to Drew Allar’s latest showing vs Jets
Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty ImagesThe Pittsburgh Steelers may have failed to get on the scoreboard during Friday night’s preseason game, but Drew Allar continued to impress. It was another game against Aaron Rodgers’ former teams as the Steelers took on the New York Jets in Pittsburgh. However, the 42-year-old veteran was not in action again as he prepares himself for his final-ever season in the NFL.Not a single point was put on the board as the Jets secured themselves a 17-0 win over Mike McCarthy’s team.A difficult night was endured by both Allar and Will Howard at quarterback for the Steelers, but there were some moments that really impressed fans about the 2026 draft pick.Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty ImagesPittsburgh Steelers fans impressed by Drew Allar in Jets lossAllar was handed the majority of the snaps on Friday night as he completed 11 of his attempted 23 throws.Fans were seriously impressed by Allar against the Green Bay Packers last week and there were more moments of encouragement on Friday.‘Oh yeah this is the successor to ARod,’ said one fan on X after seeing an improvised 50-yard throw from Allar.‘If that was Josh Allen they would call that the greatest throw of all time,’ added another.Even though Allar was sacked three times during the game against the Jets, that did not discourage the fans in Pittsburgh. One fan said: ‘It’s Allar time in the Steel City’.‘I been tryna tell y’all Drew Allar is really like that,’ said another.Although Howard ended the game with a better completion rate, Allar was able to avoid any interceptions, unlike Howard who threw two.‘There’s nothin left for me to say man. He’s just the truth,’ one other fan added.Another fan even compared the youngster to Ben Roethlisberger: ‘Sheesh I honestly didn’t think I’d be blessed with a qb that could be as good as Big Ben!’Read more:‘I’ll never forget’ – NFL fans pay tribute to Nick Chubb after retirement newsPhiladelphia Eagles shake up roster with wide receiver release ahead of Patriots preseason game5SOS ask Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce the million-dollar question after Kansas City show

YouTube Gold: Gerald Henderson’s Takes It To The Rack!
DURHAM, NC - JANUARY 06: Gerald Henderson #15 of the Duke Blue Devils dunks against the Cornell Big Red at Cameron Indoor Stadium on January 6, 2008 in Durham, North Carolina. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) | Getty Images When Gerald Henderson got to Duke, it didn’t take long for people to understand that he was a sensational talent. The most electrifying part of his game, though, the thing that got people out of their seats, was his leaping ability. Henderson is one of the best dunkers to ever come through Cameron Indoor Stadium. This video details some of his greatest hits. At the 2009 NBA Combine, his maximum vertical was measured at 35 inches, but, as Jay Bilas says at the end of this video, he seems to have an extra step on his ladder that most guys don’t have. He also had an instinct for attacking the basket, and he made some powerful dunks. This video shows 10 of his best. Everyone has an opinion on stuff like this, but most people, we think, or at least the people who saw him play, would agree that the #1 pick on this list is…well, the #1 dunk. That one was special. ‘Blown away and hammered’: Ex-England captain says Pakistan lack ‘spirit’ after embarrassing defeat
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed serious concern over Pakistan’s current Test side after their comprehensive defeat against England at Headingley, saying he had rarely seen them look so short of confidence and fight.England needed less than three days to complete an innings-and-103-run victory in the opening Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Pakistan were dismissed for 171 in their first innings and then folded for 135 in the second, spending just 85.4 overs at the crease across the match.Vaughan was particularly troubled by the manner of Pakistan’s capitulation rather than simply the margin of defeat. Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, he said: “They've been absolutely blown away. They've been hammered. I've never seen them look so timid.”He also questioned Pakistan’s overall performance, pointing to shortcomings in their tactics and the difference in quality between the two sides.“The tactical side wasn't there. The skill level and the class between the sides, Pakistan look a long way short,” Vaughan said. “I hope they can find something over the next couple of days. They'll get criticised, and rightly so; hopefully, that will force them to find something.”England’s dominance was built around a disciplined pace attack and a strong batting effort. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claimed five wickets each in Pakistan’s first innings, while Jofra Archer struck early in the second innings before Robinson and Tongue returned to dismantle the lower order. Both Robinson and Tongue finished with eight wickets in the match. Robinson was named Player of the Match after figures of 8/80, while Tongue took 8/89.England’s batters had earlier put the hosts in complete control after they posted 409, securing a 238-run lead. Harry Brook scored 91, Jordan Cox made 73, Joe Root contributed 66 and Dan Lawrence added 51.For Vaughan, Pakistan’s decline in intensity was especially disappointing given the aggressive identity traditionally associated with their cricket.“I look at this side and feel quite sad watching them this week,” he said. “I've seen many Pakistan sides play, and this side just seem to be lacking all that spirit and fight we've come accustomed to seeing.”The defeat also marked the beginning of a new era for England under returning captain Root following the retirement of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s departure as Test coach.Pakistan will now have several days to regroup before the second Test at Lord’s begins on Thursday. England, meanwhile, will look to carry their momentum into the next match as they attempt to extend their series advantage.

Everton Starting XI vs Crystal Palace: Confirmed Team News and Predicted Lineup
Everton Starting XI vs Crystal Palace: Confirmed Team News and Predicted LineupEverton vs Crystal Palace Predicted XI as David Moyes Weighs Key Selection CallsEverton begin the 2026/27 Premier League season at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, and David Moyes already has problems to solve. Some are familiar, some are self-inflicted, and one or two are simply down to injuries. The biggest issues are in midfield, at right-back, and up front. That is where the team selection gets interesting. Everton have added bodies this summer, but opening day rarely waits for a squad to feel complete. At the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Moyes is likely to trust what he has, even if what he has still looks short in a couple of areas.Midfield injuries force Everton rethinkJames Garner, Christian Norgaard and Tim Iroegbunam are all out, which strips Everton of depth and balance in the middle of the pitch. Add Idrissa Gana Gueye’s summer departure and the picture is obvious, Moyes is light in one of the most important parts of the side. That opens the door for Harrison Armstrong. He has reportedly done enough in pre-season to earn serious consideration and, right now, Everton need legs, discipline and composure more than reputation. There is also scrutiny on Hayden Hackney. Moyes has already tried to cool the noise around the new signing, saying, “If you’re expecting the boy to come from the Championship and suddenly be an outstanding Premier League player, then he may not be quite ready.” That is a fair assessment. Players arriving from the Championship can adapt quickly, but plenty do not. Everton need Hackney to be useful immediately, even if he is not yet dominant. So the midfield call may be made for Moyes by circumstance. Hackney and Armstrong looks the most plausible pairing, and it comes with risk. Palace will test it physically and positionally.Right-back problem remains unresolvedEverton’s right-back issue has dragged on too long. Moyes has admitted the club have tried to fix it, but trying and doing are two different things. The market has not moved in Everton’s favour, or Everton have not moved decisively enough.Moyes explained the failed pursuits clearly: “Well, some have been injury, some have not accepted it, and for some, the fees have been a bit too high – we’ve bid lower than what the clubs want for them.”That leaves Everton where they finished last season, still improvising. Merlin Rohl and Jake O’Brien have both seen time there in pre-season, and neither is an ideal long-term answer. For opening day, though, long-term thinking is irrelevant. Moyes needs a functional one-game solution.Rohl may get the nod if Everton want a little more mobility in wide areas, but this remains a weak point Crystal Palace will look to expose.Photo: IMAGOStriker call points towards BarryBeto has had chances to make the role his own and has not done enough consistently. Thierno Barry, by contrast, made a strong impression during pre-season and did what strikers are there to do, score goals.Pre-season form should never be treated as definitive evidence, but it matters when there is no established pecking order. Barry earned momentum, Beto did not. That makes the decision straightforward.Everton also need energy around the front line, and Barry offers that. If he starts well, he can turn pre-season promise into something more meaningful very quickly.Predicted Everton XI vs Crystal PalacePickford; Rohl, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Hackney, Armstrong; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, George; Barry. This is not a perfect Everton side. It is a side shaped by injury, by an unfinished transfer window, and by a problem at right-back that still has not gone away. But for now, it looks like Moyes’ most logical team for Crystal Palace.

Pope Leo praises San Marino as model of freedom and common good
Pope Leo XIV, center, flanked by Captains Regent Alice Mina, left, and Vladimiro Selva, waves to faithful from the balcony of Palazzo Pubblico (City Hall) during his visit to San Marino, Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026. (AP Photo/Andrew Medichini)2026-08-22T09:34:51Z SAN MARINO (AP) — Pope Leo XIV on Saturday hailed the tiny Republic of San Marino as a model of political freedom and civic responsibility, praising its centuries-old republican traditions while warning against political and economic systems that place power above the human person.Addressing local authorities during a one-day visit to the world’s oldest surviving republic, Leo reflected on the legacy of Saints Marino and Leone, whom he credited with helping create a society rooted in freedom, mutual respect and community. The pope said the two saints translated the Christian message into “a new community and political model, strongly characterized by the Christian principles of freedom, mutual respect and communion,” a legacy that he said continues to shape the republic today.San Marino, a nation of about 35,000 people completely surrounded by the Italian state, traces its origins to the fourth century. It is governed by a 60-member parliament that elects two captains regent every six months to serve jointly as heads of state, a power-sharing arrangement designed to prevent the concentration of authority. Using the micro state as an example, Leo argued that small political communities can offer lessons in public service and social cohesion at a time of growing division and distrust.Leo is the third pope to visit San Marino, after St. John Paul II visited in 1982 and Pope Benedict XVI came in 2011. The American pontiff praised a society “built on respect for one’s own freedom and that of others and above all on respect for the sacred Will of God.” Read More He warned that modern societies face increasing threats from violence, social fragmentation and ideologies that put self-interest ahead of the common good.“We live in a world wounded by many conflicts,” the pope said, citing growing violence, closures and fear of others. He urged Christians to respond through forgiveness, solidarity and concern for the vulnerable.Leo also described San Marino as a “laboratory of good politics” and called for public life to uphold the dignity of every human person “from conception to natural death” — language commonly used by Vatican officials and Catholic leaders when referring to church opposition to abortion and euthanasia. In 2021, San Marino voters approved a referendum legalizing abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, overturning a decades-old ban. The referendum represented a significant change in law and public policy in a country with deep Catholic roots. While Leo did not directly address the referendum, he repeatedly stressed the need for political, social and economic systems to place human dignity at their center. He warned against models that present themselves as liberating but ultimately fail to serve the human person and the common good. The pope also praised small communities in the San Marino-Montefeltro region that have responded to depopulation and the loss of services through mutual support and cooperation. ___Zampano reported from Rome.

(AP Photo/Angelina Katsanis, File)2026-08-22T09:23:58Z Iran’s president says the world has accepted that it’s won the war with the United States and remarks by the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria appear to contradict official U.S. position over the Golan Heights. Here’s a look at the latest developments in the Iran war and the wider Middle East on Saturday. Full coverage can be found here.Iran’s President says the world has accepted that Iran won the warIranian state media reported Friday that President Masoud Pezeshkian said the war with the U.S. should end since the world has already accepted that Iran has won. “The entire world approved our victory and the U.S. is hated,” he said according to IRNA news agency. The remarks came as the Trump administration is touting a crushing financial campaign against Iran, promising an “economic D-Day” against the country. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would be imposing an “unprecedented” level of economic warfare and isolation on Iran, aiming to force its leadership to cave to demands to end its nuclear program and fully reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz to oil and natural gas tankers. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria appears to contradict official U.S. position on the Golan HeightsIn an interview Friday, Tom Barrack said that Israel “still” occupies the territory in violation of U.N. resolutions. In his comments made to Mario Nawfal, a Lebanese-Australian entrepreneur, Barrack said that “in the Golan, with Syria, they (Israel) still occupy the Golan, against the U.N. resolutions.” Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed it in 1981. The U.N. considers the territory occupied Syrian land and the annexation null and void, with U.N. resolutions calling for Israel’s withdrawal to the June 4, 1967, line.In March 2019, Trump signed a proclamation recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, reversing decades of U.S. policy. The move did not change the territory’s status under international law or win broader international recognition. Read More Colombia became the second country to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan this month, joining the United States. Barrack’s remarks sparked a backlash Saturday from conservative activist and U.S. presidential ally Laura Loomer, who posted on X that he “should resign for his lack of understanding of U.S. foreign policy.” 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Brand Hype Has Existed Since the Bronze Age, Scientists Discover
Welcome back to the Abstract! These are the studies this week that pottered around, ate well, shone bright, and went long in the tooth.First, scientists identified a Bronze Age tradition of pottery as one of the earliest “brands,” revealing that humanity’s love for reliable commodities has deep roots. Then: a meal fit for a galaxy, a multi-camera view of the Sun, and a dizzying deep dive into a narwhal tusk. As always, for more of my work, check out my book First Contact: The Story of Our Obsession with Aliens, or subscribe to my personal newsletter the BeX Files. Brands are not brand newLuciani, Marta et al. “Creating a brand. Genesis, transformation and diffusion of Qurayyah Painted Ware.” PLOS One.Brands have completely taken over the modern world, from established corporate trademarks to the proliferation of online influencers. But the allure of brands is nothing new, according to a study about an ancient style of pottery called Qurayyah Painted Ware that was a progenitor of branding some 3,200 years ago. This brand of pottery was popular in what is now Saudi Arabia during the Bronze Age. The tradition is distinguished by distinctive black-and-red geometric designs and stylized animal and human figures. These unique visual properties, along with a consistent production technique and quality, suggest that it was an early branded commodity that was made to be recognizable to the wider community.“It is now understood that brands and proto-brands existed well before modern economies,” said researchers led by Marta Luciani of the University of Vienna. “In this contribution we analyze the process by which the commodity itself—decorated pottery vessels—was developed into a brand not by added symbols but on the virtue of its visual identity, material consistency, technological continuity, centralized production, export circulation, local imitation, intentional commercial scope, and cultural reputation.”As such, the study “offers the first investigation of the dynamics leading to the genesis of a brand,” the team concluded. Now, that’s a vintage brand. Who wants to do the sponsored endorsement on socials?A low-energy snack for the Milky Way Massari, Davide et al. “Evidence of a massive accretion event 1.8 billion years before the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus merger.” Nature Astronomy. Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, extends across 100,000 light years and contains hundreds of billions of stars. How did it get so swole? The answer is a healthy diet made up of smaller galaxies that the Milky Way has swallowed over time, adding to its starry heft. Now, scientists have identified the digested remains of a galaxy that served as cosmic baby food for the Milky Way during its infancy some 12 billion years ago. By studying stars at the center of the galaxy using the Hubble Space Telescope, the team was able to reconstruct this ancient merger between the Milky Way and a dwarf galaxy that has been gifted with the amazing name “Low-energy-Kraken-Heracles” (LKH) after its constituent parts.Concept art of Low-energy-Kraken-Heracles merging with the Milky Way 12 billion years ago. Image: NASA, ESA, Joseph Olmsted (STScI)“Our conclusions are strongly supported by cosmological simulations, which typically predict between one and four substantial mergers in the history of a Milky Way-like galaxy,” said researchers led by Davide Massari of the Observatory of Bologna. “The identification of a third merger event in the inner Galaxy puts to rest earlier debates and, honouring previous works, we name the progenitor system Low-energy-Kraken-Heracles, or LKH for short.”The study explains the origins of a group of metal-poor stars in the galactic center suggesting that they are leftovers from the LKH galaxy, which was about as massive as 500 million Suns. This merger occurred before the engulfment of another fantastically-named galaxy, Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, which occurred about 10 billion years ago and significantly influenced the Milky Way’s evolution. It goes to show that you are what you eat (in this case, yummy primordial galaxies). The Sun goes ka-blowieLuspay-Kuti, Adrienn et al. “The structure of a complex, asymmetric coronal mass ejection revealed by 17 spacecraft across the inner heliosphere.” Science Advances. It’s time, once again, to pay tribute to the almighty Sun. Our star regularly barfs out enormous streams of solar plasma known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which radiate across the solar system and can wreak havoc on satellites and even ground infrastructure in some cases. But while these solar blowouts are common, their underlying mechanics are still poorly understood. Now, scientists report unprecedented observations of a CME that occurred in December 2024, which was captured by 17 spacecraft. In particular, measurements from NASA’s Europa Clipper, which is on its way to study Jupiter’s icy ocean moon, revealed “a structure far more complex than could be inferred from single-point observations,” according to the study.Images of the December 2024 CME. Image: Luspay-Kuti, Adrienn et al. “This study demonstrates the power of coordinated multipoint observations to uncover the true complexity of CME evolution in the inner heliosphere,” said researchers led by Adrienn Luspay-Kuti of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. “Such structure would not have been resolvable from Sun-Earth line observations alone. As human exploration extends toward Mars, such comprehensive heliospheric coverage will be critical for protecting spacecraft and crew.”As if future crews to Mars don’t have enough to worry about, they’ll also have to take cover from projectile star vomit. At least the complex workings of CMEs are gradually becoming illuminated, though we may never fully understand these mercurial outbursts. Taking a tusk to taskRodriguez-Palomo, Adrian et al. “The narwhal tusk assembles its macroscopic helix from building blocks with opposing twists.” Nature Communications.Speaking of structures that get more complicated under close inspection, may I interest you in a narwhal’s tusk? These elegant elongated ornaments have inspired many myths and legends due to their unicorn-like appearance, and they have also enraptured scientists for generations. A team has now unraveled the mysterious layers of the narwhal tusk using advanced X-ray imaging techniques, which allowed them to resolve its structure on atomic, nano, and micro scales. The examination of the tusk confirmed that it consists of a left-facing helix, whereas another interior structure twists to the right. This mesh is sculpted with small deviations that mirror the iconic twisted spiral of the tusk. This 3D image shows how the mineralized collagen fibrils – the microscopic building blocks that give the tooth its strength – are arranged. Image: Adrian Rodriguez Palomo / Nature Communications“To finally solve the narwhal helical tusk puzzle, we combine multimodal imaging and multiscale orientation analysis, enabling accurate mapping of the tusk from the atomic to the macroscopic scale,” said researchers led by Adrian Rodriguez-Palomo of Aarhus University. “The structural anisotropy and the ensuing anisotropic mechanics mean that the tusk can grow straight, unlike, e.g., the curved elephant tusk, providing the narwhal with its majestic, evocative defining characteristic,” the team concluded. “The formation of such a structure remains unknown, as we lack crucial information on narwhal tusk growth and development.”Shout out to all the aspiring narwhal scientists out there—looks like there’s more work to do.Thanks for reading! See you next week.
