Packers stock watch: Who improved roster chances vs. Broncos?
The Green Bay Packers left Denver on Friday night with a 33-13 win over the Broncos in the second week of the 2026 preseason. Three different quarterbacks led touchdown drives, while rookie kicker Trey Smack hit all seven of his kicks, accounting for 15 of the team's 33 points. More importantly, a bunch of players competing for roster spots impressed against the Broncos. So, who improved their chances of making the Packers' roster in Denver? A stock watch coming out of Friday night's win:CB Kamal HaddenSay hello to your new backup slot defender behind Javon Bullard. Hadden, who played in his first game since suffering a gruesome ankle injury in late December of last year, made five tackles, including three notable open-field stops and two tackles for loss. Defending the run from the slot is a priority, and Hadden had one play where he diagnosed the run, shot the gap and made the play in the backfield. There were no obvious lapses in coverage, either. Hadden's stock is way up after a terrific week overall.RB Pierre Strong Jr. The top three running backs all look like roster locks, but it's possible Strong has made a compelling enough case for the Packers to keep four at the position. On Friday night, Strong turned eight rushes into a team-high 37 rushing yards while creating a 12-yard run and forcing several missed tackles. He also produced a highlight special teams play on a nifty kickoff return gaining 68 yards. Strong looks like a natural runner, with wiggle, burst and vision. While more likely a priority practice squad player at this point, Strong greatly improved his stock in Denver with an impressive all-around performance. QB Kyle McCordIs there any competition for QB2? McCord played well again on Friday night, while Tyrod Taylor has only been so-so as the true backup behind Jordan Love. McCord completed 12 of 19 passes and led the Packers to 13 points over four drives, including another two-minute drive resulting in points before the half. His completion percentage would have been higher had the Packers backups not dropped a pass or two. Cutting capable quarterbacks is always tough, and McCord is looking more and more capable as the preseason continues on. S Mark PerryWhile not a given, the Packers typically keep five safeties on the 53-man roster, and Perry is making a real run at securing the final spot. He created the defense's highlight play on Friday night when he read a throw up the seam and picked off Jarrett Stidham late in the first half, helping set up a field goal. Perry has strung together a pair of solid performances to start the preseason. Is it enough to win a roster spot?DL Anthony CampbellThe big man is in a deep position battle, but he keeps making standout plays. Campbell produced a sack and several other pressures while playing solid run defense inside on Friday night against the Broncos backups. Get this: According to PFF, Campbell produced only three total pressures during his final two collegiate seasons at Miami. He almost certainly produced at least three pressures in Denver on Friday night. He's not only a good story but an ascending young player. DL Jonathan FordHe was a starter along the defensive line, and while he produced a few dominant run defense reps in Pittsburgh, Ford's best plays in Denver were rushing the passer. He had a pressure on the Broncos' opening series and finished with at least three individual pressures. No one played more true nose tackle snaps in Denver than Ford, who looks like a preferred option there while Devonte Wyatt and Javon Hargrave are out. LS Cal AdomitisMatt Orzech remains on the PUP list with a calf injury, and rookie kicker Trey Smack is in a groove through two preseason games. Are the Packers really interested in making a switch at long snapper and messing with the kicking operation at this point? Adomitis is a veteran who has snapped in regular season games, so this isn't a gamble on a young player. When push comes to shove, the Packers might have to go with the guy who has been snapping most of training camp. We'll see. WR Will Sheppard had a nice night in Denver, catching six passes, including a highlight touchdown, but he's buried at a deep position. It's going to be hard to crack the top 7-8 at receiver, but Sheppard remains an excellent practice squad option. This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: Packers stock watch: Who improved roster chances vs. Broncos?

Ponting, speaking on Channel 7, said he would have made the change before the Bangladesh series. The legendary captain and now commentator believes the time has now come for Australia to look at somebody else before the upcoming Test series against South Africa in October."I very much think it’s time to have a look at somebody else," Ponting said."I admire that they tried to get him and get him back to his best but it’s been way too long now," he also added.Ponting acknowledged that there is no batter currently “belting the door down” with huge numbers in Sheffield Shield cricket, but argued that Australia cannot continue waiting indefinitely for Labuschagne to return to his best.MORE:'Pick a No. 3 who can bat': Fans demand Marnus Labuschagne's axing after latest Test failure against BangladeshRicky Ponting explains why Labuschagne is struggling and reason to drop himThe Australia great believes there is a technical issue in Labuschagne's current game, particularly when it comes to scoring from the back foot."The worry that I had with him, I think there’s some technical deficiency there but he’s making the margin for error for the bowlers too great," Ponting said."With the length, he can’t score off the back foot. If you can’t score off the back foot in Test cricket then batting becomes a hard game," he added.Ponting believes this has allowed opposition bowlers to attack Labuschagne in a much wider range of areas without facing the same punishment they once did.Ricky Ponting talks about Marnus Labuschagne, why he'd make a change, and the specific changes he'd like to see.Three minutes well worth your time... pic.twitter.com/I6XPOpc9Us— 7Cricket (@7Cricket) August 22, 2026He pointed to the difference between Labuschagne's current batting and the period when he was at his best, noting that the Australian was previously able to score from both the front and back foot."I think the bowlers now know that they can run in a bowl anywhere from almost 10 metres to about four metres on off stump and out as wide as they want and he can’t hurt them," Ponting said.Ponting believes his current inability to do the same has fundamentally changed how bowlers approach him. Moreover, Labuschagne has not scored a century in Tests for over two years.MORE:'Australia have flexed their muscles': Cricket world reacts as Mitchell Starc demolishes Bangladesh after 1st Test shockPlayers who could replace Labuschagne and why Australia need to make the changePonting specifically highlighted Campbell Kellaway and Ollie Peake, while also suggesting that Nathan McSweeney deserves another opportunity in the Australian Test team."There has to be one, two, three, four guys out there that when you watch them bat, they just make batting look that little bit easier than the others," Ponting said.Ponting is not advocating dropping Labuschagne or selecting new players as a reactionary call. Instead, he is looking at the bigger picture with a number of senior players in the team who could retire in the coming years."By trying these guys, I don’t see what we’re losing. That’s what I’m looking at. We’re not losing anything," he said.He believes Australia should begin preparing for that transition rather than waiting until several senior players depart at once. Ponting, Australian selectors and the fans have been patient with Labuschagne for far too long and despite the potential, a tough call has to be made, which means beginning the search for a new No. 3 batter. For all the latest cricket news, opinion, and commentary and to share your voice, head to our Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) pages

Girls without any chance at double winners
Girls without any chance at double winnersClear defeat in Vienna FK Austria Vienna 7-0 FC Red Bull Salzburg (H/T:5-0). Goals: Cordes (7., 56.), Pfanner (21., 38.), Schöffel (30.), Uka (41.), Pötzl (90.)After two draws in the championship group in the spring, there was no chance today in the clash against Austria's strongest team. Our team suffered a 0-7 defeat.Match summaryThings went in the wrong direction from the start. As early as the second minute, Uka appeared on the left side of our goal, but the top team in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga failed to capitalise on this good opportunity. They made no mistake with the next chance, however: Cordes inherited the ball after a Pfattner corner, and all attempts to clear it were too late – the ball was already over the line (7'). Then Schöffel burst through with energy, and Pfanner had no trouble converting the pass in the middle (21').Things then got worse: a throw-in near the halfway line wasn't quick enough for the referee. Austria were allowed the throw-in instead, and Schöffel ended up scoring (30'). Pfanner, after a dribble by Uka (38'), and Uka, this time herself (41'), added to the score before half-time.In the second half, our team appeared more settled and created chances through Lena Triendl and then Emelie Kobler. Although Cordes added to the rout, firing an unstoppable shot into the right corner of the net from the penalty spot (56'), our Salzburg team managed largely to contain the purple-clad attacking force. However, they weren't entirely successful in doing so. Pötzl skillfully controlled a long pass, and the substitute remained composed in a one-on-one (90'). So, at the end of the day, a sobering 0-7 scoreline was all we had to show for our efforts.ViewsThey demonstrated how they have got to their position in the league and also in Europe. It was an unpleasant experience, but one that is part of the process. Of course, things don't get any easier when you start as we did. You can easily get crushed – and that's exactly what happened to us. We will take this painful experience with us and use it for the future to improve, to train even harder, and to come back stronger!Dusan PavlovicLine-ups & substitutionsFK Austria Vienna: Pal – Weiss, Wenninger ©, Kirchberger – Schöffel (46. Mitchell Starc scripts history vs Bangladesh, breaks James Anderson's unique first over record
Australia responded to their nine-wicket defeat in the first Test at Darwin by bowling Bangladesh out for 64 on the opening day of the second and final Test in Mackay on Saturday. After winning the toss, Australia captain Pat Cummins chose to field and Mitchell Starc made an impact with the first ball. He dismissed Shadman Islam for a duck, registering his ninth first-over wicket in Test cricket and moving past England's James Anderson, who had eight such dismissals.Starc then continued his spell, taking five wickets inside the first seven overs as Bangladesh slumped to 12/5. It was the sixth-fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket.. Starc took five wickets in the first 45 minutes as the visitors slipped to 12/5 before reaching lunch at 35/6.Cummins added three wickets for 25 runs as Bangladesh slipped further to 39/9. The visitors, however, managed to avoid their lowest-ever Test total. Their lowest score remains 43 against West Indies in 2018.Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 64, with Starc finishing with 6/12 from 10 overs. The spell also took Starc past South African great Dale Steyn's 439 Test wickets. With 441 wickets, Starc is now the 10th-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. He has taken 19 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls, with best figures of 7/58.For Bangladesh, the collapse came after Australia had been beaten by nine wickets in Darwin in the opening Test. The second Test therefore began with Australia in control and Bangladesh under pressure with the bat.

Victim of sword attack at a Swedish school was a 17-year-old girl
People leave flowers and candles at a makeshift memorial outside a school in Fagersta, Sweden, Saturday Aug. 22, 2026, the day after an 18-year-old with a sword attacked the school killing one person and seriously injuring two others. (Magnus Lejhall/TT via AP)2026-08-22T11:35:13Z STOCKHOLM (AP) — The victim of a deadly sword attack at a school in central Sweden was a 17-year-old girl, police said Saturday. An 18-year-old man armed with a sword carried out the attack at the Brinell School in Fagersta, northwest of Stockholm, while classes were in session on Friday. One person was killed and three others were wounded, two of them severely. Police said the suspect had been arrested and that the case was being investigated as murder and attempted murder. The police said they have no reason to believe there were more perpetrators. Vastmanland County, where the town is located, said that the two seriously injured boys were ages 12 and 17. A third person, also under 18, was slightly injured and has been discharged from a hospital, Swedish news agency TT reported. On Saturday morning, around 70 people gathered at the memorial site that the municipality prepared, carrying flowers and lighting candles, TT reported. There was no official information on the attacker’s possible motive. Sweden’s national police said that investigators have already carried out two house searches in connection with the suspect. Many witnesses were expected to be interviewed as part of the investigation. The region went into a state of emergency on Friday, but it had ended by Saturday. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, in an earlier X post, lamented the violence in Fagersta “right after the summer break.”“We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively,” he said. “Our thoughts are with all those affected.” Read More Sweden has seen a series of violent school attacks over the years. Last year, 11 people, including the gunman, died after an attack at an education center in Örebro in central Sweden, leading the government to propose tougher gun laws. It’s considered to be the worst mass shooting in the country’s history. In 2022, an 18-year-old man attacked two female teachers with a knife and an ax in a school in Malmo, killing them. In 2015, a 21-year-old local man rampaged through a school in the southern industrial city of Trollhattan, stabbing three people to death before being fatally shot by police. Authorities called it a racist hate crime, saying he methodically selected dark-skinned victims at Trollhattan’s Kronan school, where most students are foreign-born. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

John Elway named honorable mention on list of best QBs from every decade
The Denver Broncos have a storied history at the quarterback position. Bo Nix has quickly taken the reins of the team and appears to be the guy for the foreseeable future. Prior to that, Peyton Manning won four division titles in four seasons and took the Broncos to two Super Bowls, winning one. Even Jake Plummer had some great seasons for the team. But before all of that, if you never saw John Elway play, you missed a treat. Broncos Country was incredibly fortunate to get Elway, the No. 1 overall pick of the 1983 NFL draft, in a trade after he refused to play for the team that selected him, the Baltimore Colts. Elway was as athletic as could be and, to this day, has one of the strongest arms the league has ever seen. You can easily make the argument that he is the most physically talented player to ever play the quarterback position, and the Broncos were huge benefactors of that. Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports looked back at every decade in NFL history. We're talking way back, all the way to the 1920s. His objective was to find the best quarterback from each decade before naming a runner-up and an honorable mention. Elway landed in that third slot for the 1980s, the decade in which he was drafted. Though Elway enjoyed his best success from a team standpoint in the 1990s, winning back-to-back Super Bowls, his best play on the field came in the 1980s. But in that decade, no one is going to beat Joe Montana, who led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl appearances, winning each of those games. However, Broncos fans can and should take umbrage to the fact that Dan Marino was chosen as the runner-up over Elway. Marino has his backers, too. Those who beat the drum for him will tell you that he was the greatest thrower of the football that ever lived. The problem was, he never won. He took the Miami Dolphins to the Super Bowl in his second season and never got back.Elway, on the other hand, took a Broncos team that didn't have much business being in the Big Game to three Super Bowls in that decade. Each player won an MVP award — Marino in 1984, Elway in 1987 — but it was the overall success of getting his team as far as he did and really being the reason those teams were in those spots that should push Elway into that No. 2 spot. That said, it's great to see Elway recognized for his efforts during that stretch of NFL history. He was truly one of the best to ever play the game. This article originally appeared on Broncos Wire: John Elway named honorable mention on list of best QBs from every decade

Michigan State football 2026 game-by-game predictions: Michigan
Michigan State football is right around the corner so it’s time to start predicting how the season will shake out for the Spartans.Michigan State football is under new leadership this season, with Pat Fitzgerald set to take over as the next head coach. He will take over a program looking to get back on the winning side, with the Spartans in the midst of a four-year bowl drought. Can he get the job done and get the Spartans back to a bowl game this season? I have offered my thoughts on that in our game-by-game predictions segment on Spartans Wire.We continue on with the next of my game-by-game predictions for each of the matchups on the Spartans’ 2026 schedule. Each morning a new prediction will be released following Michigan State’s schedule. Next up is a Big Ten rivalry matchup against Michigan…Matchup BreakdownOpponent: MichiganDate: November 7, 2026Location: Michigan Stadium (Ann Arbor, Mich.)Fun Fact About This MatchupThis will be the second time in the last three seasons that both Michigan and Michigan State will have first year head coaches facing off in the annual Mitten State rivalry game. Two years ago, Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines got the best of Jonathan Smith’s Spartans in their first Michigan-Michigan State game as head coaches. Now, Pat Fitzgerald and Kyle Whittingham will matchup against each other for the first time in this heated rivalry game.Where Things Stand Entering Matchup MSU predicted record: 5-3 (3-2 in Big Ten)Michigan State is looking to bounce back after a tough road loss at UCLA two weeks ago. The Spartans had a bye week in between that defeat and this matchup with the Wolverines.Michigan is one of the most intriguing teams in the country because of the wide gap between their ceiling and floor. I’m predicting they’ll be somewhere in the middle of those two and come into this game with a record of 6-2 overall and 4-1 in Big Ten play. I couldn’t possibly see the Wolverines be worse than 5-3, though, and if everything is running at full cylinders then they could be a perfect 8-0.PredictionPrediction: Michigan wins 27-24The bye week ahead of this rivalry game gives the Spartans a leg up here and helps them keep things competitive against the more-talented Wolverines. Additionally, I fully expect Fitzgerald to understand the nature of this rivalry and will have Michigan State playing at its ceiling in this matchup. Ultimately, though, Michigan makes a few more winning plays late and gets the job done in Ann Arbor. This one will have the feel of 2006 when Mark Dantonio coached his first time against the Wolverines. Hopefully, Fitzgerald can then follow suit of Dantonio in this rivalry…Next UpNext on the game-by-game predictions list is a home Big Ten game vs. Washington. That prediction will be released tomorrow.Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion. 22 days until Saints opener: Every player to wear the No. 22 jersey
Saturday means 22 days until the New Orleans Saints regular season opener. The Saints will open 2026 on the road when they travel to take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 13. Veteran cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. is wearing No. 22 for New Orleans.Emerson was signed this offseason to fortify the cornerback position. He started training camp wearing the No. 47 before recently switching to the 22 jersey. As such, he's poised to become the 21st New Orleans player to wear 22. Our countdown to kickoff series rolls on by looking at all of them.Saints History of No. 22RB Charlie Brown (1967-68)RB Elijah Pitts (1970)RB Gary Lewis (1970)CB Dee Martin (1971)RB Howard Stevens (1973-74)CB Benny Johnson (1976)CB Ricky Ray (1979-81)RB Tyrone Anthony (1984-85)CB Van Jakes (1986-88)CB Derrick Taylor (1987)CB Michael Mayes (1989)RB Gil Fenerty (1990-91)RB Brad Muster (1993)RB Lorenzo Neal (1994-96)CB Tyronne Drakeford (1998-99)CB Fred Thomas (2000-07)CB Tracy Porter (2008-11)RB Mark Ingram (2013-18, 2022)S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson (2019-21)WR Rashid Shaheed (2023-25)CB Martin Emerson Jr. (current)Charlie Brown was the first player and first to be drafted by the Saints to wear No. 22. A Round 10 selection in the team's inaugural 1967 draft, Brown had just 16 yards rushing but 2 touchdowns in six games over the franchise's first two seasons. The Saints acquired future Green Bay Packers NFL Hall of Fame running backs Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung for the first year in 1967. In 1970, they tried that same philosophy with former Packers star Elijah Pitts. The strategy had similar disappointing results, with Pitts rushing for only 96 yards on 32 attempts in six games.A fourth-round pick in the 1971 NFL draft, Dee Martin was the first defensive player to don No. 22. Martin had 3 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries while starting all 14 contests as a rookie. However, he was placed on injured reserve the following year and spent just that one season in the NFL. Pitts and Martin were two of the 12 (out of 20) players to wear No. 22 for New Orleans that used the uniform for two years or fewer.Van Jakes was the first since Charlie Brown 20 years earlier to wear No. 22 for more than two years. Jakes was an underrated player in the Saints secondary through three years and 40 games. He had 8 interceptions over that span. Gil Fenerty was an underrated offensive contributor into the early 1990s. A Round 7 choice from Holy Cross in 1986, Fenerty played three years in the CFL before joining the Saints in 1990. He'd be with the team two years as a quality reserve back, scoring 7 touchdowns and picking up 1,276 yards from scrimmage.A 1988 first round draft bust with the Chicago Bears, Brad Muster came to New Orleans in 1993 as the Saints' own 1988 draft pick, Craig Heyward, headed to Chicago. Muster was with the Saints for two years, only wearing No. 22 his first season as he picked up just 214 rushing yards. Lorenzo Neal took over No. 22 in 1994 after wearing No. 23 as a fourth-round choice in the 1993 NFL draft. Neal had a 16-year career as one of the most respected fullbacks in the NFL, with four of those years as a Saint. He only wore 23 as a rookie before switching to No. 22.Tyronne Drakeford had a solid career in the Saints defensive backfield after coming over from San Francisco. Drakeford had 4 interceptions for the 1998 squad, returning one for a touchdown. Fred Thomas followed him in the No. 22 jersey in 2000. While Thomas often faced the ire of New Orleans fans and media, his 109 games over eight years is the second longest stint for by any Saint in a No. 22 uniform. Thomas had 13 interceptions, forced 9 fumbles, and broke up 77 throws during his time in New Orleans, including 9 picks over a two-year stretch between 2002 and 2003.A much more popular Tracy Porter succeeded Thomas in the No. 22 uniform as a second round choice in the 2008 NFL draft. Porter is best-known for his critical interception in the 2010 NFC Championship Game, then the 74-yard interception return for a touchdown to clinch the Saints win in Super Bowl XLIV. However, he was an outstanding playmaker at corner for four years with New Orleans. Over that span, Porter had 7 interceptions, 32 pass breakups, and 4 fumbles forced. Last year, Tracy Porter was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame. While Porter was responsible for a couple of iconic moments in franchise history, the standard for No. 22 with the Saints is Mark Ingram. The Heisman Trophy winning running back from the Alabama Crimson Tide was the 28th choice in Round 1 of the 2011 NFL draft, making him the highest drafted player by New Orleans to wear No. 22. While he wore three different numbers with the Saints, Ingram also played more games in a No. 22 jersey than any other New Orleans player.Over his first few seasons, Ingram shared backfield duties with other talents. Once becoming the featured back, Ingram had two 1,000-yard rushing seasons and another of over 960 yards over a four-year stretch. He left as a free agent after the 2018 campaign, but returned to New Orleans in 2021 for two years to cap off his career. At the time of his retirement after 2022, Ingram's 6,500 rushing yards, 52 scores as a runner, and 1,451 attempts were all tops in franchise history. Once eligible, Mark Ingram is a lock for the Saints Hall of Fame.Between Ingram's stints in the No. 22 uniform was C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a fourth round choice in the 2019 NFL draft. Gardner-Johnson made an instant impact for the New Orleans defense. Over his three years with the squad, he had 5 interceptions while breaking up 28 passes along with recording 3 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. Gardner-Johnson was poised to be a centerpiece for the Saints defense, but his immaturity over a contract dispute forced a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles during 2022 training camp. After Gardner-Johnson's tantrums and Ingram's retirement, the No. 22 jersey became available for Rashid Shaheed in 2023. The explosive Shaheed burst onto the scene as an undrafted rookie in 2022 wearing No. 89. Once switching to No. 22 in 2023, Shaheed earned first team All-Pro honors as a punt returner averaging 13.6 yards and a touchdown. He added 46 receptions for 719 yards that season. Shaheed was off to an even better start in 2024 before suffering a season-ending knee injury before the midway point. New Orleans traded Shaheed midway through the 2025 campaign, thus opening the door for Martin Emerson Jr. to take over the uniform. Before missing all of 2025 with injury, Emerson was one of the league's better cornerbacks for three years with the Cleveland Browns. He'll certainly have the opportunity to strengthen the New Orleans defensive backfield. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: 22 days until Saints opener: Every player to wear the No. 22 jersey
