Laverne Cox & filmmakers say decline in Black LGBTQ+ media representation harms everyone
Transgender actress Laverne Cox and other queer media stars of color are shining a light a troubling trend: a decrease in screen time and representation for Black LGBTQ+ figures in TV and movies. “And it’s never been about positive or negative representations,” Laverne Cox said at a panel discussion on August 9. “It’s about more, because everyone’s not going to connect to everything, but the more we have, the more possibilities that people can see themselves in representation.” Related The progress trans media representation has made since ‘Ace Ventura’ is being wiped out Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Cox was speaking at the 24th Martha’s Vineyard African-American Film Festival on a panel titled “Reel Change: Black Film, Culture, and the Stories That Shape Us.” Presented by GLAAD and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the panel talked about how “visual storytelling can shape culture, influence perception, and expand what is possible for Black communities.” In particular, Black and queer representation can challenge harmful stereotypes and increase visibility for marginalized voices. Joining Cox were Bithiah Lafontant from ViiV Healthcare, podcast host Ryan Mitchel, filmmaker and activist Nneka Onuorah, and Dr. Felicia DeHaney Russell of the W.K. Kellog Foundation. The panel comes in the wake of GLAAD releasing their Where We Are on Film annual report, which depicted a grim picture of LGBTQ+ representation in the US. While there was a decrease in representation for LGBTQ+ people across the board, it was naturally worse for intersectional representation of marginalized groups. GLAAD analyzed 225 movies released by major studios and found a 36% decrease in the number of LGBTQ+ characters of color compared to the previous year. Only two characters had HIV and they appeared in the same movie — a notable problem as reports from ViiV Healthcare show that 37% of new HIV cases happen within the Black community (despite them making up only 12% of the US population), Gayety reports. Across all 225 movies, there were zero trans characters. Lafontant highlighted how problematic it is to have worsening representation for LGBTQ+ people on screen at a time when LGBTQ+ are struggling naturally: “I think … in this moment, we need to see stories where people are just who they are, and it doesn’t have to be a story of trauma.” Lafontant when on to highlight that we don’t just need representation depicting struggles, but uplifting representation that shows queer people of color just existing in society: “Where are the love stories? Where are those moments where people just see themselves living, happy, peaceful, joyful, the whole human experience?” Similarly, Onuorah spoke about the importance of representation that depicts struggles but in the context of hope and the ability to repair bridges. “So a lot of my work is showing us what hope looks like,” Onuorah said. “So the work that I’m doing is focusing on us getting active about our healing and showing what love could look like if we all come together on our differences.” She said that one of her films that played Martha’s Vineyards Film Festival, Truth Be Told, is about the LGBTQ+ experience in the Black Church. “There’s a lot of oppression within churches and within religion that kills us from the inside and kill our families from the inside,” Onuorah said. Cox also shared a story that highlighted the importance of queer stories beyond letting people know they’re not alone: they help people to work through trauma and grief that has been caused by social attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community. “A dear friend of mine said, when he watched Pose, because he was in New York, during the height of the AIDS crisis, he said there was trauma that he hadn’t even processed,” Cox said. “Because he was in a space where people were dying every other day, he watched all of that trauma, and he hadn’t given himself space to process it until 30 years later while watching Pose. He let himself cry, he let himself grieve, and that is the power of beautiful art.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

5 Los Angeles Dodgers Prospects We Want to See Called Up in September, Including One of Their Elites
IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectAs we close in on the end of August, teams around MLB will soon get the chance to add a couple of extra players from the minors via the traditional September call-ups. That means that with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a battle for the best record in baseball, they could get some reinforcements from their deep and talent-rich minor league system. They will also get the chance to evaluate the ability of certain prospects to succeed at the big-league level for a month. So which players who aren’t already with the club might get the promotion call soon? We take a look at five players we hope to see in Chavez Ravine over the final month of the season.James Tibbs III, First Base & Right FieldFeb 23, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman James Tibbs III against the Seattle Mariners during a spring training game at Camelback Ranch-Glendale. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesCredit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectOutside of first-time All-Star and Gold Glove candidate Andy Pages, the Dodgers have gotten average play from the outfield this offseason. Which is very disappointing since they have a ton of money invested in right fielder Kyle Tucker. Then this weekend brought the news that Pages will miss over a month due to a fractured wrist suffered on Friday. However, the Dodgers’ deep farm system does offer some call-up options for the outfield. One of the best is seventh-ranked prospect (on MLB.com) James Tibbs III. The 13th overall pick has played at first in Triple-A but has experience in the outfield. But more than anything, he has been the Comets’ best hitter this year. Posting a .304 average, .988 OPS, with 27 homers, 87 RBIs, and 94 runs in 116 games. If the Dodgers are looking for instant thump to the lineup, Thibs III should be an immediate call-up.Jerming Rosario, PitcherFeb 19, 2026; Glendale, AZ, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jerming Rosario poses for a portrait during photo day at Camelback Ranch. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesCredit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectYou can never have enough good arms in September and during the postseason. That is why LA should consider bringing up one of their best pitchers from Triple-A next month. Especially with closer Edwin Diaz’s health and performance being an issue. That is why reliever Jerming Rosario should be under consideration for a promotion. The Dominican prospect has had one of his best seasons in 2026. Posting a 3.21 ERA with two saves and 65 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. He also has five holds, showing he can be impactful when thrown into the fire during the middle of innings.Zach Ehrhard, Center FieldOklahoma City’s Zach Ehrhard drives in a run during a minor league baseball game between the Oklahoma City Comets and the Albuquerque Isotopes at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Friday, March 27, 2026.Credit: USA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectAnother option to replace Pages temporarily and bring some excitement to the outfield is top-15 talent, Zach Erhard. The current Oklahoma City center fielder has had a breakout season in year three as a Dodgers prospect. Hitting .295 with 17 homers, 79 RBIs, 97 runs, and 27 stolen bases in 2026.Erhard is a rock-solid defensive player who can do a little bit of everything. Making him a useful on-base weapon manager Dave Roberts can deploy in September.Mike Sirota, OutfieldMay 13, 2017; Denver, CO, USA; General view the Los Angeles Dodgers cap and glove during the ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY SportsCredit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectSometimes teams make bold moves with their September call-ups. And after the Pages injury, the door is open for the Dodgers to do so soon. That is why we offer up the radical idea of promoting their second-best player in the minors, outfielder Mike Sirota, from Double-A to the big leagues. The 23-year-old has been great in Tulsa this year. Posting a .310 average, .987 OPS, with 10 homers, 40 RBIs, and 56 runs in 63 games. He is a smart hitter who can hit to all fields, and with some pop. He also has speed and offers sound, versatile defense in the outfield. If the Dodgers wanted to inject some extra excitement into the final month of the regular season, showcasing one of the elite prospects they were unwilling to give up in the Tarik Skubal trade would be a lot of fun.Noah Miller, ShortstopMar 9, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Milwaukee Brewers second baseman David Hamilton (6) steals second base under the tag by Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Noah Miller (88) in the second inning at American Family Fields of Phoenix. Mandatory Credit: Rick Scuteri-Imagn ImagesCredit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectOne of the big letdowns this season is one seems to be a continued regression of 8-time All-Star Mookie Betts. After an uncharacteristically down year in 2025, he has been just as bad, if not worse, in ways this year. Giving him more rest next month so he can be as healthy as possible for a better showing in the playoffs makes sense. That’s why top-30 prospect Noah Miller could be a September call-up. The shortstop is having another solid season in Triple-A. Putting up a .257 average with 10 homers, 9 triples, 63 RBIs, and 58 Rs in 115 games. While he brings sound hitting and running, he is a very good defender and won’t hurt LA there during occasional starts.

Journalist insists Juventus cannot be overlooked in the Serie A title predictions
Journalist insists Juventus cannot be overlooked in the Serie A title predictionsJournalist Massimo Caputi has predicted how he expects the Serie A title race to shape up this summer and does not believe it would be wise to overlook Juventus. The Bianconeri have not been in their best form during the last few campaigns and have not been as good as they would have liked. This is one of the reasons they are not being considered favourites to win the league crown this summer, but it could be a huge mistake to underestimate them.Juve have had a decent summer transfer window, and they have one of the best coaches in the league, even though they are currently a work in progress. The team is expected to perform better as the season progresses, and everyone knows they will give their best to ensure they do well. However, will they be in the running for the Scudetto?Caputi refuses to rule out JuventusCaputi knows it could be a tough season for them, but he does not believe that the Bianconeri should be ruled out of winning the Scudetto. The former champions have work to do before they can be considered genuine favourites, but their summer business has given supporters reasons to believe that they can improve. Their current situation means expectations must be managed, but they still have enough quality to compete.Caputi also believes the transfer window could bring further changes, meaning it would be premature to make firm predictions about how the title race will develop.Juventus remain in title raceHe said via Tuttojuve:“I wouldn’t write off the other teams (apart from Inter Milan) as done for, especially since the transfer window isn’t over yet and could hold some surprises. First and foremost, I think clubs like Juventus and Milan should always be kept an eye on. Then, of course, there’s Napoli, Como, and Roma, where the only potential complications could arise from managing their double commitments, but they’re still strong teams.”Caputi’s comments should encourage Juventus supporters who believe their team can challenge for the Scudetto. While the Bianconeri may not be the obvious favourites, they remain a team that opponents should take seriously. With the transfer window still open, Juventus could also make further additions before the season takes shape. If Spalletti can bring the squad together and get the best from his players, they could have a much stronger campaign than some expect.

Breanna Stewart urges a safe space as transgender debate sparks rallies at Fever games
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart has always seen the WNBA as an inclusive place that has served as a safe space for both its fans and the players. That’s been challenged lately. The WNBA has been the subject of recent debates on whether transgender women — people assigned male at birth who transition to align with their gender identity — should be allowed to participate in the league. There has never been such a player in the WNBA. Although the league’s collective bargaining agreement says the WNBA is restricted to women, it contains no more specific language about gender identity or sex assigned at birth. There have been small rallies and protests outside Indiana Fever games after the issue came to a head when Sophie Cunningham of the Fever said in an ESPN profile published last month that she was opposed to transgender girls and women competing in girls’ and women’s sports. There are rallies planned before the Liberty face the Fever on Saturday night in Brooklyn.“Knowing that rallies are happening on both sides shows the platform that the W has and the stunts for attention are just continuing to try and ride the wave that we have,” Stewart told a small group of reporters Saturday morning. “I want Liberty fans and even Indy fans that are going to come here tonight to be able to have this arena be a safe space.”At least three fans were asked by WNBA security personnel to cover shirts that had messages about transgender women participating in women’s sports during last Sunday’s game at Atlanta between the Dream and the Fever. The league later said the fans should have been free to wear those shirts.Stewart said Liberty fans specifically, but WNBA fans in general, come to games because “they can feel like they can be themselves in whatever capacity that is and we don’t want to lose sight of that."The Liberty forward said everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if that stops being allowed there are much bigger issues. However, she said, trying to divide teams and players shouldn't be tolerated.“If we don’t allow (free speech), we need to like really kind of go back and look at more things. I think the bigger thing is people are trying to divide us as teams, but also as teammates or as opponents," she said. "This league is incredibly inclusive and what we continue to fight for and stand up against. So, we don’t want to take that platform away.”___See AP’s full WNBA coverage here

George Russell Says Kimi Antonelli Forced a Big Mercedes Driving-Style Change at Dutch GP
George Russell spent the summer break trying to borrow a little speed from the teenager who had been beating him. At Zandvoort, the 28-year-old Mercedes driver finally felt the experiment beginning to pay off.At Zandvoort, Russell claimed the win at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix Sprint before securing second on the grid for Sunday’s grand prix. Norris earned pole with a 1:11.163 lap, while Russell posted 1:11.265, 0.102 seconds slower. Antonelli was third, trailing Norris by 0.133 seconds.Antonelli’s Style Gave Russell a New Problem to SolveRussell said Antonelli’s approach works particularly well with Mercedes’ 2026 car and its tires. The two drivers have used noticeably different driving styles since Antonelli joined the team, and Russell decided that copying selected elements was worth the uncomfortable amount of time it took to get used to them.Asked whether he’d found something in the car, Russell answered:“No, I think the truth is, obviously Kimi’s been doing an amazing job this season, and clearly the two of us have quite different driving styles. That was apparent last year, and it is really working well for him with this car and these tyres. And just trying to implement something similar into my driving style. “I kind of describe it as, like, if you change your golf swing, you’ll probably take half a step back before making those improvements. And I think the break just allowed me to put those learnings into the back of my mind, come here this weekend, not fixating on what I want to try and achieve with the car and the tyres, but knowing in the back of my head what I need to achieve and just drive more freely. “I’m really, really proud of that because it’s just sort of building that toolbox of experience for me that’s going to allow me to be even better in the years to come. Who knows, maybe next year the technique is totally different again. That’s the beauty and challenge of Formula 1. Every year it’s different.”This was not Russell’s first attempt to learn from his teammate. With 20 laps remaining in Miami, Russell moved his differential and brake-bias settings closer to Antonelli’s. He said the final 10 laps became much more competitive. The Better Feeling Was More Important Than the CopyingRather than a specific setup change that has resulted in a burst of performance, Russell has instead made a difference to his approach behind the wheel, one he has absorbed naturally instead of consciously fixating on.Asked whether his stronger performance at Zandvoort had always been available, Russell said:“It definitely wasn’t part of the plan. I had a lock-up at Turn 1, so I didn’t get the chance to improve. But the car felt great and I felt in a good window with it. And just similar to what Lando says, when I’ve got that confidence, and when he’s got that confidence, you can sort of extract the performance out of it. And just trying to find this feeling a little bit more consistently.“The feeling I’ve had this weekend is more used to the feeling I’ve had earlier in the season and my years gone by in Formula 1. So, I’m glad that is the case. I hope that can continue. But it definitely brings me a lot of confidence because I know the potential is still very much there.”

Tropical Storm Moke advances toward Hawaii as winds strengthen
A woman and child walk past a debris-strewn street in Naalehu, Hawaii, Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, after a severe weather system went through the area. (Stephen Lam/San Francisco Chronicle via AP)2026-08-22T16:57:25Z HONOLULU (AP) — Tropical Storm Moke advanced toward Hawaii Saturday, likely bringing more heavy rainfall and strong gusts to the Big Island, where residents are still dealing with the aftermath of heavy flooding and damaging winds from Hurricane Lala.Moke, which formed Friday in the Pacific Ocean, was located about 470 miles (755 kilometers) southeast of Hilo, moving west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph), as of 5 a.m. on Saturday in Hawaii. Maximum sustained winds were around 50 mph (85 kph), the National Hurricane Center said.As with Hurricane Lala, the Big Island is expected to bear the brunt of Moke’s rain and heavy winds as it passes south of a direct hit late Saturday into early Sunday.Moke will then continue its westward path near the islands through early Tuesday, said Casey Oswant, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu. “There will still be impacts, especially to the windward and southeast sides of the Big Island, but it will probably be a little bit more limited than what we saw with Lala,” Oswant said.Lala downed trees, swept buildings off their foundations, damaged roads and bridges and left roads covered in mud and rocks. One storm-related death was reported.Rainfall predictions for this weekend for the southeast and windward sides of the Big Island were 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters), with as much as 15 inches (38 centimeters) in isolated areas, Oswant said. Across the rest of the island chain, 1 to 2 inches (2 to 5 centimeters) of rain was expected, though parts of east Maui could see up to 4 inches (10 centimeters), she said. There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect early Saturday morning, but people were urged to closely monitor the storm’s progress. The rainfall has the potential to cause dangerous rip currents, life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in steep areas and places where the ground remains saturated, the center said. Your browser does not support the iframe HTML tag. Try viewing this in a modern browser like Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer 9 or later. The northeast coast of the Big Island saw the heaviest total rainfall from Lala, at 43.54 inches (1.1 meters), according to the weather service. About 9,000 customers on the Big Island remained without power Saturday, according to poweroutage.us. Read More Hawaii Gov. Josh Green and other state officials held a news conference ahead of Moke, urging people to prepare by restocking food, medicine and other essentials. “There’s definitely tension in the air” at the thought of more rain in communities that floodwaters turned into rivers, said Tiffany Edwards Hunt, a teacher living in Keaau, on the east side of the Big Island.___Associated Press reporter Alexa St. John contributed from Detroit.

Yorkshire and Hampshire set up intriguing finale
George Hill followed up his 5-29 with the ball, with a gutsy 37 with the bat [Getty Images]Rothesay County Championship, Division One, Utilita Bowl, Southampton(day three)Yorkshire 173 & 301: Lyth 51, Wharton 47; Organ 4-59Hampshire 197 & 106-3: Albert 36*, Gubbins 27Hampshire 3 pts, Yorkshire 3 ptsMatch scorecardGeorge Hill played a leading role as Yorkshire put themselves into a commanding position heading into the last day of their County Championship relegation battle with Hampshire.All-rounder Hill only scored 37 but was a key part of a 58-run stand with Dom Bess for the ninth wicket, as Yorkshire set Hampshire a formidable 278 runs to win.Having taken a first-innings five-for, Hill broke the deadlock of Hampshire's innings, before Ben Coad and Adam Lyth's breakthroughs made the visitors favourites on the final day.Hampshire will need 172 runs to win, Yorkshire seven wickets.A home victory would leave them a point behind Yorkshire, and safety, whereas the White Rose county could build out a 36-point gap on the relegation zone as the Championship heads towards a thrilling finale. After taking five late wickets the previous evening, Hampshire had brought the match back into the balance but Yorkshire spent the first two sessions making sure it was clear they were in charge. As had been the case throughout the opening two days, the flow of the run-scoring was glacial due to a combination of a dry pitch that didn't allow the ball to come on and a slow outfield. Therefore, Yorkshire's batters had to graft to build out a lead – which began at 111 on the third day.Hampshire were hoping to chase around 150, and certainly not above 200, but a failure to build pressure meant the visitors could creep that number up and up.Nothing was overly pretty, summed up by Matthew Revis scoring 16 off 62 balls before Andrew Neal managed to turn one off the straight and pass his outside edge.Jonny Bairstow - who was an injury doubt after injuring his hand while keeping, and would not take the gloves later in the day - added some run-scoring impetus. The Yorkshire skipper plopped two slog sweeps over the boundary as he took the lead over 200 with Wharton and George Hill. The hosts predominantly bowled spin, with Neal and Felix Organ racking up 40 overs between them. They were also the only two Hampshire wicket-takers on the day.Having bowled Revis, left-armer Neal repeated the trick by bowling Bairstow, while Organ dismissed Wharton with the assistance of Ali Orr at short leg.But further scalps had to wait with Hill and Bess putting on a significant lead-growing 58 runs for the ninth wicket.Organ rounded out the innings by bowling Hill and, after 18 more runs were stuck onto the requirement, Bess was strangled down the legside. It meant Hampshire were set 278 runs to win, a large target that would need patience, albeit with the pitch flattening out and bounce truer. They initially looked in control of things, but Hill, Coad and spinners Bess and Lyth earned rewards for refusing to give away simple runs.Hill struck first when he bowled the same top-of-off delivery that had earned him five wickets in the first innings, to square up and castle Orr.Coad's delivery was closer to a fifth stump line but drew an unconvinced prod from Gubbins to edge to slip.Lyth struck with his first delivery as Jake Lehmann loosely attempted a swiping drive, which leapt out a foothold and looped to second slip.Toby Albert and Tom Prest guided Hampshire to close without a further loss, with an intriguing day four in store.Report by ECB Reporters' Network, supported by Rothesay.Notifications, social media and more with BBC Sport

'No button to press' - Glasner and Forest must find stability
Oliver Glasner took charge of Forest for the first time in the Premier League [Reuters]Oliver Glasner stood in the centre circle after the final whistle and applauded the rapidly emptying City Ground. It was almost apologetic from the Austrian after his first Premier League game as Nottingham Forest manager ended in frustration with a late defeat to Leeds. There was the contrast to Leeds manager Daniel Farke's celebrations with the away fans after Anton Stach's free-kick deceived Matz Sels with two minutes left. Forest were always going to be a work in progress and desperately need stability after going through four managers last season. Glasner will be looking to deliver it and it is not time to judge after just one game, something the head coach was keen to emphasis."There is no button to press," said the 51-year-old. "There are still a lot of things to do. "It was pretty clear I can't come with my staff and we lay the hands on the shoulder, and all of a sudden we play like Real Madrid in the 70s. That was clear but I could see a team who worked very hard to get the win."The last time Forest played Leeds, on a dark February Friday night at Elland Road, Sean Dyche's 114-day reign was about to end. A 3-1 defeat and player unrest led to his dismissal days later, following a 0-0 draw with Wolves. Glasner, of course, was not even Dyche's replacement with Vitor Pereira steering Forest to safety and the Europa League semi-final before being sacked in June to make way for the former Crystal Palace boss. The optimism which came with Glasner's appointment will not be wiped out by an underwhelming defeat and Forest showed enough to argue they should have won. They created the better openings - Igor Jesus missed a fine second-half header and Nikola Milenkovic hit the post - and the structure of how Glasner wants to use width with his wing-backs was evident. But no new signings in Glasner's starting XI left the hosts looking a little stale, with the City Ground struggling to rouse itself as the game proved anti-climatic.After 13 new players arrived last summer - and the 21 players signed in 2022 after promotion - the Forest line-up had a unusual familiarity following the summer break. Eight of the starting XI were including in Nuno Espirito Santo's team in the opening-day win over Brentford last season.Summer arrivals Ousmane Diomande and Xaver Schlager came on with 17 minutes left and this did not have the feeling of a new era.Arguably, they are weaker following Elliot Anderson's £116m move to Manchester City in July. Parkinson admits no guarantees of Wrexham signings
Phil Parkinson has entered his sixth season as Wrexham manager [Rex Features]Phil Parkinson is remaining calm over Wrexham's bid for late transfer business despite admitting there is no guarantee of new additions. The manager had spoken of the difficulty of the transfer window for Wrexham in the build-up to Saturday's 1-1 draw with Watford. He reiterated the north Wales club are having to battle for the signings they want after his side were frustrated at the Racecourse in front of watching co-chairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.Parkinson said he was keen to add "difference-makers" after seeing his side come from behind, but struggle to find a way to a winner against Watford, though admitted the club who have journeyed from non-league are up against new competition.Wrexham frustrated again in Watford drawLatest Wrexham news, analysis and fan viewsRyan Reynolds and Rob Mac flew in to watch Wrexham's opening home game of the season [Rex Features]"We're working towards several options," said Parkinson."I great chat with Rob and Ryan before the game and Mike (Williamson, CEO) and Sean (Harvey, director)."We know what we're trying to achieve, but we are competing for players who the top teams are looking to get."There's no guarantees any signings will come in because, the players we're competing for are wanted by other clubs in this division and other divisions around Europe."They're the kind of difference-making type of players we want, but when you're in the battle for players you have the challenge of other clubs trying to take them or teams don't want to sell them."So we know the players we want, the positions; if we get them then great, if not we've got players coming back off the treatment table."That includes Josh Windass who has missed both of Wrexham's opening games, but who is set to return for Friday's visit of Birmingham City, the final fixture before the transfer window closes.Libby Cacace and Ben Sheaf remain out, with the latter a key man for the team in their push for the play-offs last season.Wrexham have made three signings this summer, including Danny Imray, the wing-back from Crystal Palace who scored the hosts' equaliser. He later hit the post to add to Wrexham's frustration at failing to pick up a first win of the season, although Parkinson said he had still been pleased with his side's opening two performances of the campaign that have earned back-to-back draws."You don't make a signing in for the sake of it, or spend big on a player, but it's not the fit we want," he added."I think the three lads we brought in, everyone can see what good players they are. We'd like to add more quality if we can, but like I said, we have got players also to come back into the group."

Can Tristan Wirfs Win Protector of the Year in 2026?
Tristan Wirfs has already established himself as one of the NFL's premier offensive tackles. In 2026, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers star has a chance to take that reputation a step further and make a legitimate case for Protector of the Year. Wirfs enters the season coming off another dominant campaign. Despite playing a career-low 778 offensive snaps while dealing with injuries, he finished with a 92.7 overall PFF grade, ranking second among 89 qualified tackles. His 91.6 run blocking grade ranked third, while his 84.9 pass blocking grade ranked fourth. He also allowed just two sacks and four quarterback hits while surrendering 23 total pressures.PFF recently ranked Wirfs as the 2nd offensive tackle in the NFL heading into 2026, behind only Detroit Lions star Penei Sewell. PFF noted that Wirfs produced the best performance of his career when healthy in 2025 and expects him to remain at an elite level this season. The biggest question may simply be whether he can stay healthy and play a larger percentage of the season. His 2025 production was outstanding despite missing time, and another full season at that level could put him in position to challenge Sewell for the crown.Wirfs has already earned five consecutive Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro honors, including becoming the first player in NFL history to earn first-team All-Pro recognition at both right and left tackle. At this point, there isn't much left for Wirfs to prove. But winning Protector of the Year in 2026 would add another major accomplishment to an already impressive resume. If he stays healthy and continues playing at the level he showed in 2025, Wirfs absolutely belongs in that conversation. This article originally appeared on Bucs Wire: Can Tristan Wirfs Win Protector of the Year in 2026?

Recall when a MAGA pundit told Lindsey Graham to see if Iranians really ‘throw queers off rooftops’?
Stew Peters, a Russia-backed anti-LGBTQ+ influencer who once baselessly accused a gay father of raping his own children, recently said that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) should be dropped off in Iran’s capital city of Tehran to see if he’ll be killed by anti-LGBTQ+ extremists. He’s just the most recent political figure to accuse Graham of being gay. “We should drop Lindsay Graham off right in the middle of Tehran to see if these people really do throw queers off of rooftops,” Peters said while complaining about Graham’s support of the current president’s illegal war in Iran. Related Anti-Lindsey Graham ad uses sexual innuendo to imply that he’s gay Graham has supported the idea of a U.S. war with Iran for decades, according to The Guardian. Speaking to Fox News in early March, Graham said, “I’m going back to South Carolina, I am asking them to send their sons and daughters to the Mideast. What I want you to do in the Mideast, my friends, in Saudi Arabia and other places, step forward and say, ‘This is my fight too.'” Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Graham is unmarried but has never publicly come out as gay. His sexuality has long been the subject of rumors and innuendo. Anti-queer conservatives in the U.S., like the current president, often resort to “homonationalism,” citing Muslim-majority countries’ anti-LGBTQ+ policies or their radicals’ extremist actions as a pretext for inciting racism, Islamophobia, and violence against Muslims. The U.S. president recently told Americans they should be grateful for the war in Iran because Iranians “throw gays off the buildings” and Americans don’t do that. While Iran does have horrific punishments for homosexuality, the current U.S. presidential administration is rolling back LGBTQ+ rights, queer-competent healthcare, and LGBTQ+-inclusive policies nationwide as part of its Christian nationalist agenda. While Iran has the death penalty for homosexuality, the specific charge of throwing LGBTQ+ people off of buildings is likely a reference to a video released by the Islamic State, throwing allegedly gay men off of buildings in Syria in the mid-2010s. Furious that American soldiers are being sent "to die for Israel," extremist antisemitic broadcaster Stew Peters declares that "we should drop Lindsey Graham off right in the middle of Tehran to see if these people really do throw queers off of rooftops." pic.twitter.com/LKtc9GFsPq— Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) April 6, 2026 Peters has repeatedly platformed anti-LGBTQ+ politicians on his broadcasts, referred to transgender people as “tra**y freak shows”, and spread misinformation claiming that gay former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is HIV-positive. The Anti-Defamation League describes Peters as “an antisemitic conspiracy theorist” who “regularly promotes anti-LGBTQ+ and white supremacist beliefs on his show and social media” and “has engaged in Holocaust denial.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has called The Stew Peters Show “a central hub for antisemitic and conspiratorial content.” He has repeatedly called for the mass expulsion of Jews from America and promoted concepts linked to white supremacy, QAnon, Pizzagate, and other conspiracy theories. Raiders' focus on Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins is hiding a bigger problem
Raiders' focus on Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins is hiding a bigger problem originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Las Vegas Raiders are all the talk in the NFL right now. That's what happens when you have two superstar quarterbacks on your roster. The Raiders, of course, have veteran Kirk Cousins and rookie Fernando Mendoza on their roster. They selected Mendoza with their No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Expectations are high. The sky is the limit. All eyes are on these two. But, it's easy to ignore other parts of the puzzle when the quarterbacks are getting all the media hype. The Raiders may have another problem that they need to address before the season starts.Raiders' secondary could be their biggest problemIn a piece out on Saturday, ESPN's Ryan McFadden lays out a problem the Raiders have that perhaps they haven't addressed enough. It's their secondary."Las Vegas' secondary has potential, but will that lead to success in 2026?" he asks.McFadden notes that cornerback Darien Porter continues to learn on the field after making the swift from a college wide receiver to an NFL cornerback. "He started 10 games as a rookie, but he has a lot more growing to do," he adds.Meanwhile, "fourth-round rookie corner Jermod McCoy hasn't played football in more than a year because of a knee injury, so it will take time before he feels like his true self," McFadden adds. "Fifth-round rookie corner Hezekiah Masses is also learning."Also, safety Treydan Stukes has a great shot of making a difference as a rookie, "but the Raiders are taking his development slowly because they are asking him to play deep safety and nickel," McFadden notes.Considering how the Raiders have had problems in their two preseason games, it stands to reason that they need to pay attention to their secondary. Their secondary is young, and that's great, but it might need more time to develop.More NFL news:Steelers' four-quarterback plan could create a roster problemDallas Cowboys urged to sign $53 million star to fix a roster weaknessRams' Ty Simpson could be waiting a while to take over for Matthew Stafford

Klay Thompson must do one thing after Mavs buyout before Draymond Green's '305 aesthetic' warning turns real
Klay Thompson must do one thing after Mavs buyout before Draymond Green's '305 aesthetic' warning turns real originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Klay Thompson's Dallas Mavericks tenure is officially over, and his next stop is set. Dallas announced a buyout Friday, and the five-time All-Star is expected to sign with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers. According to reports from ESPN's Shams Charania, Thompson will sign a two-year deal worth roughly $13 million with a player option for the second season. Miami overlooked several key targets for the 36-year-old sharpshooter, and the patience finally paid off. Amid the transition, his old Golden State Warriors teammate Draymond Green has a warning for him about fitting in. Green posted an Instagram story recently reacting to a graphic of Thompson's new No. 11 Heat jersey. Green wrote, "South Beach Killa!!" In the same story, he then tagged Thompson, joking, "I think you gone have to buy a new boat to fit the 305 aesthetic my boy."The "305" line nods directly to Miami's iconic area code and its flashy South Beach lifestyle. The boat references Thompson's time with the Warriors, when he regularly commuted to Chase Center games across the San Francisco Bay on his 37-foot Axopar. \While he originally nicknamed the vessel the "Nordic Knife," he recently renamed it the "SS Stallion." Green's joked that Thompson's old Bay Area boat won't work in Miami. He needs an upgrade to fit the South Beach vibe.Thompson walked away from the final $17.5 million of his contract to say goodbye to Dallas, where things never clicked the way either side hoped. He signed with the Mavs in 2024 on a three-year, $50 million deal, but the Luka Doncic trade after seven months reshaped the roster around him. Eventually, he lost his starting spot midway through last season. Over 69 games, Thompson averaged only 11.7 points on a career-low 39.3% shooting, including 38.3% from three.Miami has been chasing him for weeks. The Heat, now built around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, made Thompson their top offseason shooting target and are using most of their remaining mid-level exception to get him. Mavericks president Masai Ujiri praised Thompson on his way out, calling him "one of the great players and competitors of his generation."More NBA news:Cooper Flagg’s hilarious reaction to his girlfriend's question has fans saying ‘a new meme just dropped'7-time NBA All-Star thinks Mavericks' Klay Thompson decision could pay off big for HeatNets owner Joe Tsai addresses 'embarrassing' reality of Knicks' championship runKlay Thompson’s 2024 Lakers snub for Mavericks tied to key concern over Anthony DavisFormer NBA Champion claims 6-foot-6 Kyrie Irving would top Michael Jordan with ‘no weakness’

Michael Holley recalls ‘PFT Live’ fainting incident, which required stiches
Credit: PFT Live; NBC SportsA scary scene unfolded on Aug. 14 on PFT Live when co-host Michael Holley became overheated and fainted on camera. One week later, Holley returned to the show with co-host Mike Florio. Holley explained what happened and offered an update on how he’s doing now.“What a week, Mike,” Holley said to Florio. “What a moment. I gotta tell you. You handled yourself great. Thank you for talking with [producer Kristen Coleman], because what you guys don’t know… When I went down, one thing I did have, one thing that didn’t go down, was my IFB. So, my IFB was in my ear. And I could hear this conversation. ‘Hey, does somebody have Holley’s wife’s number?’ And I heard something about emergency services. I said, ‘Who are you talking about? Oh, they’re talking about me.'”“And then I was on the floor… And I’m telling you, this is so ridiculous. This is a ridiculous part of our business,” Holley continued. “My first thought was, ‘That’s going on the internet.’ And my second thought was, ‘Well, now, look.’ And I saw, I think at that point it was 8:42, 8:43, something like that. I said, ‘Well, 17 minutes left in the show. Let me just put the microphone back up here. I’ll sit down. I’ll finish the show.’“And I try to do that, and you guys are like, ‘Are you nuts? Get out of here. Get yourself some help.’ Thank you for continuing to talk, continuing to talk through it, really. I think it brought me back a little earlier than maybe I would have. But, in all seriousness, people, I mean, it was scary. It was a scary situation.”Holley received five stitches in his knee from the fall, but he’s doing fine.“Everything’s checked out,” Holley explained. “Everything’s fine. I’m medically fine. I just want to put that out there. But also, people were great. Not just people who we work with, Mike. I heard from people I haven’t heard from in 10 years, 15 years; childhood friends, high school friends, college friends. Neighbors, business people, fans coming up and just offering words of encouragement, making sure that I’m okay. So, thank you for all the messages and all the nice gestures. It has been overwhelming.“How about this? There was a guy who came up to me, and I said, ‘Oh, this is what it’s going to be now. A guy who came up to me; we’re on Martha’s Vineyard now… And a guy came up to me and said, ‘Hey, I was coming over on the boat, and I saw on YouTube. Are you the guy? Are you the guy who passed out on TV?’ I said, ‘Wow, a whole career, and that’s what it is. I’m now the guy who passed out on TV.’ So, I’ll take it.”“I’ll be totally honest with you, Mike- I haven’t watched it,” Holley added. “I’m not ready to watch it yet. I have not watched it.”It’s just great to hear that Holley is doing well, and it’s good to have him back in action on PFT Live.Along with his work on PFT Live, Holley has long been known for his work as a sports reporter and columnist for outlets such as the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and Akron Beacon Journal. He was also a frequent panelist in the early years of the former ESPN show, Around the Horn. The post Michael Holley recalls ‘PFT Live’ fainting incident, which required stiches appeared first on Awful Announcing.

Texas LB Ty'Anthony Smith dismissed for 'conduct detrimental to team'
We now know why third-year linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith was dismissed from Texas Longhorns football on Friday evening. After Saturday's team scrimmage, UT coach Steve Sarkisian says it was for "conduct detrimental to the team."Smith played in 28 games over the past two seasons, making one start in 2025. He finished last season with 60 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles. His two interceptions in the Longhorns 41-27 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl win over Michigan in January seemingly set Jasper, TX product as a probable starter in 2026. But new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp typically values size more than speed in his 4-3 system and it was becoming evident Smith would not be a starter to begin the season. After Saturday's scrimmage, Steve Sarkisian addressed the situation. “He was dismissed," Sarkisian said. "Conduct detrimental to the team, and that’s just what it is. I didn't like it. It's an unfortunate situation. I hate that. For us as a team, I hate that. He's a quality player, but I have to think about the team first."Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said LB Ty'Anthony Smith was dismissed for conduct detrimental to the team. Said, "I didn't like it. It's an unfortunate situation."— Anwar Richardson (@AnwarRichardson) August 22, 2026Smith's dismissal comes just two weeks from the start of the 2026 season for the Longhorns against the Texas State Bobcats, which is certainly not an ideal time to lose a player with nearly 30 games of experience. Sark says he will be missed. "From a linebacker perspective, when you really think about it, and you think about the amount of nickel you really play in season and what that looks like, you're thinking about two backers the majority of time on the field. You want as many healthy, good players as you can have at every position," Sarkisian said. Now it will be largely up to the younger linebackers (like freshmen Tyler Atkinson, Kosi Okpala and Rocky Cummings) on the team to step up and fill in the gaps. Scores of people kidnapped from a mosque as armed groups attacked multiple villages in Nigeria
2026-08-22T18:20:46Z A number of people were kidnapped from a mosque in a spree of abductions at several villages in Nigeria ‘s north-central Niger state, police said Saturday. The assailants attacked a mosque in Kpenya village after attacks in a string of villages in the remote Borgu Local Government Area of Niger state Friday, police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said. Such attacks are common in Nigeria, where multiple armed groups operate, killing and kidnapping people for ransom. The groups sometimes clash in competition with each other. No group has claimed responsibility for the Friday attacks.Abiodun did not provide figures but said no lives were lost in the Friday attacks, and said the military was deployed to the area. Residents said scores of people were abducted, with some estimating between 60 and 80 people were kidnapped. A search for survivors was underway Saturday. Borgu area council chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir said at least 60 people were kidnapped and an unspecified number of people sustained gunshot injuries while trying to escape the gunmen.“People were abducted while praying at a Juma’at mosque on Friday,” Nasir said. “That was when the bad people came and surrounded the mosque and took them away.” Zubairu Umar Talba, a youth leader in the Dekara area in Borgu, told The Associated Press that his 85-year-old father was among those who were taken. “Nobody can tell you the exact number of people abducted because, so far, about 80 of our people have been abducted and many have fled the area,” he said. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site
