Kevin McConnell stepped off the MAX Green Line with his bicycle amid the morning rush of commuters finding their trains and buses at the Gateway Transit Center platform in east Portland. In the past, McConnell relied on the Green Line to get all the way from his home in Portland’s Lents neighborhood to his job downtown. But on this morning, he was among the dozens of people hastily making their transfers to other trains and buses.That’s because the Green Line was cut short, his commute time shot up, and taking his bike went from optional to necessary. He said he now rides it almost every day, just to save a little time.“My typical commute time I believe was 38 minutes, and now I think it’s about 53, and that extra few minutes really matters when I’m traveling to work in the morning and coming home at night,” he saidMcConnell is one of several riders OPB spoke with about the first week of service cuts and changes that TriMet enacted Aug. 22 to help reduce a $300 million budget gap. TriMet spokesperson Tia York said those efforts reduced the agency’s deficit by about half, to $158 million. TriMet’s budget woes come amid rising costs for fuel, labor and materials due to inflation. The agency also previously hired more staff in anticipation of ridership returning to pre-pandemic levels. But ridership has plateaued at 70% of those levels, and in July, TriMet announced it also would begin cutting nearly 400 positions. In addition, efforts to secure more state funding fell through when a large transportation bill that had money earmarked for public transit failed. The single biggest change has been to the MAX Green Line. Before the cuts, riders could take the Green Line all the way from Clackamas Town Center to Portland State University in downtown. To make the same trip now, they have to stop at the Gateway Transit Center and transfer to a different line.Greg Peterson is one of many who once frequently rode the Green Line into downtown. “The main thing I’ve been affected by is I have to change trains [at] Gateway now, but that’s not a big deal,” Peterson said. “It’s something TriMet needed to do, you know? You can’t lose money forever.” The service cuts include changes to 34 bus lines, two of which have been eliminated due to low ridership. The remaining routes will either be altered, shortened or consolidated with nearby bus lines, and some buses will also run less frequently during certain times of the day. Portland resident Mary Ambriz plans to work from home more now because the changes will increase her commute time. “I could be delayed getting to work… or I have to leave an hour early because that’s an hourly bus,” she said. “It’s gonna cost time.”Portland Community College student Kaitlyn Lewis lives right by the MAX station near Portland State University, an apartment she chose for its access to public transit. Now without the Green Line passing through, she has to wait longer. “Because of my heart condition, I don’t drive. I really like, struggle to even walk to transportation,” Lewis said. “It was like anytime I walked out, I would see that a MAX would be coming in 5 to 10 minutes. And now I really struggle to have to wait in the sun, especially in the heat.” York said she encourages riders to plan their trips using the TriMet website, where they might find alternate routes or transfers to save time. She said as TriMet looks to the future, the agency can’t cut its way out of its financial crisis and needs to seek more revenue. TriMet’s goal is to balance its budget by July 2028.TriMet has tried to increase public transit use by partnering with local organizations. For example, to get to Portland Timbers or Thorns games, riders’ event tickets also serve as their ticket to ride TriMet three hours before and after the game. Until then, York said, both riders and the agency will have to adjust to the changes. “If we can just get through this together, these first couple of weeks of transition,” she said, “I guess we’ll get comfortable with our new normal.”

Maybe your neighbor left a bag of ripe plums on your porch, not realizing you are already contending with the pounds you culled from your own tree (a different variety, at least) and are still giving out jars of last year’s plum sweet and sour sauce as fast as you can. Maybe you’ve gotten your hands on a bucket of blackberries, or have a bowl of the good parts you cut off the slightly wormy apples you gleaned. If you live in the Northwest, you probably know a guy who is desperate to offload their peak-season excess, and now you have the perfect blank canvas to soak it all up. This coffee cake’s batter is thicker and stickier than my usual snack cakes’ recipes, with chia seeds and flax meal to help gelatinize the juices as they cook out of the fruit. These nutritious additions (plus the whole wheat flour and gobs of fruit) make this cake a proper salubrious start to the day, but it’s also wonderful with your afternoon beverage of choice. Makes one large rectangle of coffee cakeNote: I’m buried in blackberries and plums at the moment, but you should use whatever fruit you have — you’ll need about six cups total. I segregated my fruit into different sections of the cake so I could play with the flavors more: A few pinches of cardamom, sliced almonds and a drop or two of almond extract for the plums; a scrape or two of lemon zest, chopped hazelnuts and a couple cracks of black pepper for the blackberries. Ingredients3 cups of blackberries18 prune plums, halved and pitted1 ¼ cup sugar, divided1 ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, divided1 ½ cups all-purpose flour1 cup whole wheat flour1 teaspoon baking powder1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon salt½ teaspoon powdered ginger ¼ teaspoon nutmeg¼ cup chia seeds2 tablespoons flax meal½ cup milk½ cup neutral oil 2 large eggs¼ teaspoon almond extract¼ to ½ cup chopped or sliced nuts for topping (optional)Sparkling sugar for top (optional) InstructionsPlace the blackberries and plums in separate bowls (or together!) and sprinkle each with 2 tablespoons of the sugar and a few pinches of cinnamon (feel free to riff here). Set aside to macerate while you prepare the cake batter.Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease and line with parchment a 9 x 13-inch rectangular baking dish.In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the remaining sugar and cinnamon with the flours, baking powder, baking soda, salt, spices, chia seeds and flax meal. Whisk together the milk, oil, eggs and almond extract (I do this in the same liquid measuring cup), then form a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the milk mixture. Stir until just combined. Don’t overmix!Scrape and spread the batter into the prepared baking dish, then use a slotted spoon to scoop out the fruit and strew it across the cake batter, gently pressing it in to anchor it. I arranged mine in a checker pattern just for kicks.If you’re using nuts, stir them into the leftover fruit syrup before adding them to the top of the fruit (if you’re not using nuts, dribble the syrup across the top instead), then sprinkle the top with sparkling sugar if you’re living deliciously. Bake until the fruit is soft and jammy and a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out dry, about 45-50 minutes. There is something for everyone on the Yahoo waiver wire right now, as roster rates tend to climb slowly during the stretch run. And although this is the time of year to heavily stream players with favorable upcoming matchups, there are also a few players who have plenty of potential to become rest-of-season roster mainstays.The good news doesn't end there, as this week's list includes a strong balance of starters, relievers and hitters. Let's dive in:Pitchers to addAndrew Painter, SP, Phillies, 24%: Since rejoining the Phillies on July 31, Painter has shown some significant changes to his arsenal that should have fantasy managers excited. The former top prospect seems to have finally figured out his four-seam fastball, which he is throwing harder and inducing more vertical break. His changeup has fed off the fastball improvements to become more effective itself. The results have been excellent, including a 3.62 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across five starts.Painter should be in most lineups for his Friday start against a weak Angels offense and can remain on rosters if that outing goes well.J.T. Ginn, SP, Athletics, 32%: Ginn has been the Athletics' most consistent starter this season, as his respectable strikeout skills and heavy groundball lean have made him successful at home and on the road. Still, every Athletics pitcher likely prefers to work away from their hitter-friendly home park, which will be the case for Ginn twice next week, when he makes starts at offense-suppressing venues in Texas and Seattle. Managers who need to load up on starters for the final week of the fantasy regular season should add Ginn and his fellow two-start teammate, Gage Jump (13%), who has fared much better on the road (3.49 ERA) than at home (5.62 ERA).Ben Joyce, RP, Angels, 23%: Managers who are looking for saves will find plenty of readily available options, led by Joyce, who is not only baseball's hardest thrower but has also earned three of the Angels' past four saves. The right-hander has been terrific (0.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 12:3 K:BB ratio) since returning from a season-opening stint on the IL. Among the current reliever options, Joyce is the one who is being used exclusively as a closer.Mason Montgomery, RP, Pirates, 27%: Montgomery can make a strong case to be baseball's best reliever this summer. After all, the left-hander has logged a 0.86 ERA and 0.62 WHIP since July 1, while striking out a ridiculous 41 batters over 21 innings. Over that two-month stretch, Montgomery's effective work has enabled him to collect three wins and six saves. In a given week, he has a better much better chance than an average one-start pitcher to help fantasy managers.Grant Taylor, SP/RP, White Sox, 33%: Taylor has plenty of similarities to Montgomery, as someone with terrific strikeout skills who is accumulating wins and saves by being used exclusively in high-leverage roles. Mason Miller is the only pitcher in baseball who currently tops Taylor in both saves and strikeouts (8 SV, 89 SO). And with the White Sox looking to secure a surprising division title, Taylor figures to be deployed often down the stretch.Hitters to addMickey Moniak, OF, Rockies, 33%: Moniak earned a two-year contract extension, as the Rockies identified him as part of their future by virtue of him posting an OPS over .800 for the second straight season. He has been incredible at home this year (.997 OPS), which makes him a must-start player when Colorado enjoys a homestand. Such is the case for the entirety of next week, and for 16 of 22 games, starting on Monday. Although the 28-year-old is seen as a boring veteran by many fantasy managers, he's easily the top player to add from this article. Those in deeper leagues who cannot add Moniak and pivot to his teammates, Cole Carrigg (17%) and Zac Veen (6%).Walker Jenkins, OF, Twins, 14%: The Twins are calling up their best prospect today. Jenkins, who is ranked as the No. 14 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, will surely play regularly, with a likely home in center field while Byron Buxton deals with a nagging hip injury. Jenkins has been on fire in Triple-A, having gone deep eight times in August prior to his promotion. He's hitting for average this season (.323) and showcasing his speed (17 steals). The left-handed hitter should also benefit from seeing plenty of righty starters on the Twins' upcoming schedule.Tim Tawa, 1B/2B/3B/OF, Diamondbacks, 17%: Managers who are looking for a utilityman to slide in and out of their lineup can consider Tawa, who has recently been a five-category contributor with the advanced stats to support his success. The 27-year-old has logged an outstanding 93.6 mph average exit velocity during August, and he ranks 12th among qualified hitters in xBA (.297) and 19th in xSLG (.504). His actual August stats have been impressive as well, including four homers, five steals and a .283 average.Dylan Beavers, OF, Orioles, 3%: Beavers is swinging a hot bat, having hit .348 with three homers and a 1.334 OPS since August 19. The 25-year-old is a predictable streamer, as he plays against all right-handers and sits versus southpaws. He's an outstanding three-day option at the outset of next week, when the Orioles will play three games at Coors Field against right-handed starters.Hitters with favorable weekend matchupsHenry Bolte, OF, Athletics, 12%: Managers who are looking for a speedy table-setter can add Bolte, who has become the full-time leadoff hitter in an injury-ravaged Athletics lineup. The fastest runner in baseball, according to Statcast, Bolte showed an average quality of contact during his initial three months in the majors before crushing the baseball (93.1 mph average exit velocity) during August.To put that AEV into perspective, it would rank in the 97th percentile if Bolte could maintain it across a full season. He should provide runs, steals and batting average when the Athletics face the Orioles at hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park this weekend.Coby Mayo, 1B/3B, Orioles, 4%: Although Mayo still has much to prove in a career that has yet to fully take off, we can already say with certainty that this former prospect can thrive against left-handers. In fact, this season Mayo has logged an eye-popping 1.109 OPS in those matchups, which includes 14 homers in 114 at-bats. The 24-year-old has an excellent chance to go deep this weekend, when the O's face two southpaw starters during their series at homer-happy Sutter Health Park. The New England Revolution have signed midfielder Judah Siqueira as a Homegrown Player, extending through the 2027-2028 Major League Soccer season with club options through the 2030-2031 campaign, according to an announcement. The 17-year-old from Easton becomes the 17th player to join the New England MLS roster from the Revolution Academy.Siqueira made his first two MLS appearances in recent matches. He made his league debut on Aug. 19 at D.C. United in a 3-0 win. When Warsh last spoke, in a press conference in late July, he sowed confusion about his willingness to lift interest rates to combat stubbornly high inflation. Longer-term borrowing costs rose on fears that inflation could worsen. What many economists and Wall Street analysts are hoping for is a clear signal on how he thinks the Fed should respond to the ongoing price increases that have caused pervasive gloom for many Americans. Warsh has said he doesn’t want to provide what analysts call “forward guidance” about whether the Fed will hike or cut rates or stay on hold at upcoming meetings. He argues that it limits the Fed’s flexibility by committing it to a specific policy. He also thinks financial markets have become too dependent on such guidance. Yet some economists argue that he could say more about his views on Fed policy without tipping his hand about future actions. The stakes are high for Warsh, who took over the Fed chairmanship May 22 after his predecessor, Jerome Powell, completed his term. Previous Fed chairs have often used speeches at Jackson Hole to address broad questions about interest-rate policy and the economy, or to signal upcoming changes in their approach. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to buy at least a million dollars worth of robots from Boston Dynamics, the company that makes the dog-like SPOT robots, with the purpose of improving “officer safety,” according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcement.The news shows that ICE continues to spend millions of dollars on new technology. The New York Police Department cancelled its contract with Boston Dynamics following a public backlash. ICE plans to spend between one and two million dollars on the robots, according to the announcement. The robots can cost starting at around $75,000, suggesting ICE plans to buy at least several of the devices.Boston Dynamics did not respond to a request for comment.The company is also working on humanoid robots. According to initial assessments, a massive chunk of ice snapped off a glacier and tumbled thousands of feet into the valley below. Rock, ice and mud plunged down for miles, washing away communities along the river.Scientists say glaciers in this region, and around the world, are increasingly unstable because of human-caused global warming. Across the mountains of Nepal and Tibet, climate change is causing glaciers to melt at an alarming rate.Planet-heating emissions from burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal are the primary driver of climate change. Scientists say that in addition to reducing climate pollution, renewable energy and battery technologies are increasingly price competitive with traditional energy sources.“There’s no question that this event was made more likely because of climate change and that we’re seeing more likely other similar glacier hazards occurring,” says Twila Moon, deputy lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder.Footage from the Chinese-administered Tibet side of the border with Nepal shared on local media showed a massive gush of water sweeping over a port building as people fled. STAVANGER, Norway — King Harald V of Norway, who went into exile in the United States as a child during the Nazi occupation of his homeland and refused a string of European noblewomen to marry his school sweetheart, died Friday. He was 89.The palace said he died at the National Hospital in Oslo at 6:35 a.m.Harald was Europe’s oldest monarch. The popular king modernized the royal house but refused to follow in the footsteps of other aging monarchs who have abdicated in recent times. His son automatically became King Haakon VIII.Like other royal houses in Europe, the Norwegian monarchs serve a largely symbolic role, enjoying celebrity status while real power in the democracy of 5.5 million rests with an elected parliament. Harald was crowned after his British-born father, King Olav V, died in January 1991, and reigned during an oil-and-gas-driven economic boom in his country.Royal family fled Norway during World War IIHarald was born in 1937 in Asker, near Oslo, becoming the first Norwegian prince to be born in the country since King Olav IV in 1370. In the following centuries, Norway didn’t have a king of its own until Harald’s grandfather, Haakon VII, was elected king following the 1905 dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway.Harald was 3 years old when the Nazis occupied Norway at the start of World War II. To avoid capture, his mother fled with him and his sisters, Ragnhild and Astrid, first to Sweden and then by boat to the U.S., while Harald’s father and grandfather went into exile in Britain with Norway’s government.Haakon’s refusal to go along with German demands garnered respect among his people.During their time in the U.S., the Norwegian royals were often guests at the White House. Instead, Norwegians greeted the Aug. 29, 1968, wedding with jubilation, and later embraced Sonja as their queen. The couple had two children, Haakon and his older sister, Märtha Louise.The Norwegian Constitution was altered in 1990 to allow the first born, regardless of gender, to take precedence in the line of succession. However, it was not applied retroactively, meaning that Haakon continued to take precedence over his sister.When Harald assumed the throne on Jan. 21, 1991, he adopted the same motto his father and grandfather had used: “All for Norway.” He spent the next years trying to modernize the monarchy.“It has been my experience that the monarchy stands strong,” he once said. “This is not least because my father and grandfather did most things right. SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea, the U.S. and Japan will go ahead with a trilateral military drill next month to better deal with North Korean nuclear threats, officials in Seoul said Friday, a day after North Korea vowed to retaliate against what it called U.S. hostilities.The development further dims prospects for an early resumption of diplomacy between North Korea and the U.S., despite President Donald Trump’s recent decision to scale back a major bilateral military drill with South Korea in an apparent goodwill gesture toward the North.South Korea’s military said in a statement the Freedom Edge exercise will start on Sept. 7 for a five-day run in the waters off South Korea’s southern Jeju Island.It said the exercise is defensive in nature and meant to respond to North Korean nuclear and missile threats as well as promote regional peace and stability.North Korea has previously slammed the trilateral drill as a “reckless show of strength” that showed its adversaries’ confrontational stance against it. Pyongyang has also said the drill contained a U.S. intention to lay siege to China and exert pressure on Russia.The Freedom Edge drill, a U.S.-South Korea-Japan exercise, was launched in 2024. It’s designed to increase the sophistication of previous exercises with simultaneous air and naval drills geared toward improving joint ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance and other skills and capabilities.Last week, the U.S. and South Korean militaries ended their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise six days earlier than originally planned, after Trump said he had ordered the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” the drill that North Korea views as an invasion rehearsal. A federal judge has ruled in favor of artificial intelligence company Anthropic in its legal battle against the Pentagon after the government labeled the company as a supply chain risk earlier this year.U.S. District Judge Rita Lin issued a written order Thursday night that the Pentagon acted illegally by punishing the AI company for its criticism of the Department of Defense’s views on AI use. The government is expected to fight the ruling.The dispute between the AI company and the government broke out in February when President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused Anthropic of endangering national security and designated the company a supply chain risk. Anthropic’s primary tech industry rival, ChatGPT maker OpenAI, made its own deal to work with the Pentagon just hours after the government punished Anthropic for its stance.Anthropic and OpenAI are each ramping up for buzzy initial public offerings.Earlier in the legal proceedings, Lin had temporarily blocked the Pentagon from labeling the company as a supply chain risk and blocked enforcement of Trump’s social media directive ordering all federal agencies to stop using Anthropic and its chatbot Claude.In a hearing July 30, Lin had said that the government’s position was “really troubling” to her and that it seemed “at odds to me with the First Amendment.” She also said she believed the record had “gotten worse for the government” over time.In that same hearing, Department of Justice lawyers argued that the nature of AI models is “so staggeringly enormous and opaque” that the Defense Department cannot evaluate it in the same way it would a physical piece of hardware.Anthropic lawyer Michael Mongan said in that hearing that the government’s actions “profoundly harm Anthropic” and that they “threaten more broadly to chill speech and debate on a very important issue.”Anthropic has also filed a separate and narrower case that is still pending in the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. That case involves a different rule the Pentagon is using to try to declare Anthropic a supply chain risk.

The Chicago Bears took on the Tennessee Titans during a joint practice in Nashville on Thursday ahead of Saturday night's preseason finale.The Bears participated in a roughly two-hour practice with the Titans, which featured some standout moments from quarterback Caleb Williams and his array of weapons, who had Tennessee's number for the first half of practice. While the Titans tightened up in the second half, it was still an overall solid showing. Meanwhile, Chicago's defense was shorthanded with cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson exiting with injuries, and it showed as Cam Ward had an impressive second half for Tennessee.Let's recap the Bears-Titans joint practice:TakeawaysCaleb Williams came out firing: Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has said he enjoys playing in cold weather, but it seemed like he didn't mind the heat so much either on Thursday. Starting out in practice, Williams was dialed in. According to CHGO's Adam Hoge, he completed 9-for-11 passes with six straight completions. Hoge notes the two incompletions were a throwaway and a drop, with the targets being spread out to eight receivers. Meanwhile, NFL on Fox's Ben Arthur said Williams made special plays out on the field, highlighting his completion on a layered throw to Rome Odunze. And Blaine Kellar of Main Street Nashville clocked Williams at just three incompletions during the entire first half of practice. Whoever you ask, it's clear Williams had a strong first half of practice before the Titans began generating pressure and forcing Williams to make poorer throws as the practice concluded.Colston Loveland turned some heads: It's always fun to see what other teams' beat reporters think of the players you cover on a day-to-day basis. Sure, we all know Colston Loveland is a monster and seems poised for a breakout season in Year 2, and seeing other media members describe him only confirms those thoughts. Loveland was having his way with the Titans' defense, making big plays and bouncing off would-be tacklers. Parker Kelley of 102.5 The Game said Loveland "looks legit" during practice, while A to Z Sports Nashville called him "big, tall, fast, and very good." It's another indication that Loveland is going to be a problem for defenses this year. We're going to see a lot of national media members say the same things the more they see of him.The Bears' tight ends were on full display: While Loveland drew the attention of the Titans' media, the Bears' offense made sure to feature all of the tight ends on Thursday. Johnson drew up a nifty trick play at the goal line with Williams faking a run to Roschon Johnson and an end-around to Kalif Raymond before lofting a perfect pass to Kmet in the back of the end zone. Sam Roush, meanwhile, caught a deep ball before making a leaping touchdown from Case Keenum in 11-on-11 drills on the same drive. While Stephen Carlson and Qadir Ismail made plays as well, the top three players at the position will be counted on heavily this year, and we got a dose of what that might look like.Braxton Jones has fallen off: There was one particular play that stood out for all the wrong reasons on Thursday, which was captured by X user Ball Noir. At first, the play simply looks like an escape from Williams before he gets rid of the ball, but the major concern is the rep by Braxton Jones, who gets completely obliterated by defensive end Jermaine Johnson to flush the quarterback to his right. Jones gets blown up so badly, he falls into guard Joe Thuney, who could have been hurt by the friendly fire. Jones' play seems to be getting worse and worse the longer camp goes on. He struggled against the Bengals just five days ago and hasn't taken hold of the starting left tackle job since coming back from his injury suffered a few weeks ago. Jones was never superb against the bull rush, but he was far better than what he showed on Thursday in the past. Maybe those days are officially over.Xavier Woods turned things up a notch too high: We know the Bears tend to be the more physical team in these joint practices during the Ben Johnson going back to last training camp, but there's still a line between physical and unnecessary. It appears Xavier Woods crossed that line on Thursday. Woods, who played for the Titans last year, laid a big hit on wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson that drew a flag and caused a scuffle between the two teams. Titans coach Robert Saleh said Robinson was being evaluated for a concussion and called the hit "cheap" while guard Peter Skoronksi said it was unacceptable. Woods doesn't have a reputation as a dirty player or anything, and the weather conditions had both teams a little on edge. Johnson wasn't available for comments after practice, but we can be sure he will keep his team playing with a physical tone while making sure it doesn't get out of hand. -- Brendan SugrueStudsQB Caleb Williams: While the offense was certainly better in the first half of practice, quarterback Caleb Williams certainly made a strong impression. According to Adam Hoge, Williams got off to a hot start, where he had six straight completions and was 9-for-11 with his incompletions being a throwaway and a drop. "Ball being spread around. Eight different receivers have caught a pass from Caleb." He also threw two touchdowns during that red zone period. Titans reporter Ben Arthur had high praise for Williams. "Caleb Williams has made some special plays. Hit Rome Odunze beautifully in stride out of an RPO. Later stepped up in the pocket and hit Cole Kmet on a nifty shuffle pass. Also completed a dart into a tight window outside the numbers." After practice, Titans head coach Robert Saleh praised Williams as a modern-day Russell Wilson.Bears tight ends: Simply put, the Bears tight ends all had a day against the Titans defense, which is encouraging for Chicago and scary for the rest of the NFL. Colston Loveland, Cole Kmet and Sam Roush all had standout moments. There was endless praise about Loveland from Titans reporters. Parker Kelley: "Colston Loveland looks legit man." AtoZ Sports Nashville: "Colston Loveland is big, tall, fast, and very good." Kmet was on the receiving end of a trick play, where D'Andre Swift pitched it back to Caleb Williams who then found an open Kmet downfield. Roush was making plays all practice, per Nicholas Moreano, catching a deep ball from quarterback Case Keenum during 11-on-11 and a few plays later catching a back shoulder pass in the left side of the end zone from Keenum, which had the offense excited. AtoZ Sports Nashville said it best: "Bears TEs have been the most effective way for Chicago today."RB D'Andre Swift: Before Thursday's practice, Ben Johnson said this is the best he'd seen running back D'Andre Swift look at this point of the year. During the Titans joint practice, he once again was a standout. According to Ben Arthur, Swift gave the Titans defense some fits and noted that it was "tough for Tennessee to get a hand on at times." Swift also had a touchdown during a red zone drill. He also had a hand in a trick play, where he took the handoff, tossed it back to Caleb Williams, who then hit Cole Kmet. It's more of the same for Swift, who's been a training camp standout this summer and is poised for another sensational season under Johnson.DB Cam Lewis: It wasn't an overall great day for an injury-riddled Bears defense, especially with starting cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson exiting with injuries. But Cam Lewis did have an early standout play and notched an important takeaway. According to Steve Layman, Titans quarterback Cam Ward threw behind tight end Gunnar Helm and Lewis was there for the interception. -- Alyssa BarbieriInjury updatesThe Bears' defense has been ravaged by injuries all throughout camp, and things didn't get any better on Thursday. Already missing defensive linemen Austin Booker and Gervon Dexter, the Bears' top two cornerbacks exited practice early with injuries. Jaylon Johnson suffered an arm injury, while Tyrique Stevenson dealt with a leg issue, which thankfully didn't keep him out long. And rookie Jordan van den Berg appeared to be cramping due to the extreme heat. With multiple starters still out for the foreseeable future, it's difficult to project how effective this defense will be early in the season. They need all hands on deck, yet players keep exiting early with ailments. It’s no secret that the UConn Huskies have been the boogeyman, or monster hiding under the bed, for the Illinois men’s basketball program in recent memory. It all started back in 2024, when the Illini were amidst a magical March Madness run and ended up being tasked with facing a juggernaut Huskies team in the Elite Eight. Things started off competitively in the game, with the score tied at 23 with two minutes to go in the first half, and both teams in the fight. And that’s when things took a turn for the worse for the Orange and Blue, as the Huskies went for the kill shot, ripping off a now-infamous 30-0 run.THE FULL UCONN 30-0 RUN ‼️Unbelievable. @UConnMBB 😱#MarchMadnesspic.twitter.com/T0Tbl2JlLV— NCAA March Madness (@MarchMadnessMBB) March 31, 2024Illinois ended up losing 77-52 after trailing by as many as 30 points at one point in the second half, Since then, the two teams have rematched twice, both in the 2025-26 season.The Huskies won in the regular season at Madison Square Garden in November of 2025, and once again ended a deep Illini postseason run in the Final Four back in April, cementing the overwhelming truth that UConn has had Illinois’s number as of late.Even if you peel things back a layer, the Huskies have dominated the all-time series between the two historic programs.In fact, the last time Illinois beat UConn was in the two teams’ first-ever meeting all the way back in 1938.To put that in perspective, the last time the Illini took down the Huskies, World War II hadn’t even started yet, and the NCAA basketball Tournament didn’t even exist.So if you’re only looking at games that happened after the early 20th century, Illinois holds a 0-5 record against UConn.That means that this season, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood and his “Everyday Guys” have an opportunity to do something that hasn’t been done in almost 90 years.On Friday, Dec. 4, at the United Center in Chicago, the Illini will have their chance to fight off the demons that have been plaguing them and beat the Huskies. UConn’s Dan Hurley, one of the best head coaches in all of college basketball, is returning a few familiar faces from last season’s showdowns.Sophomore guard and projected lottery pick Braylon Mullins will be back with the team. While he wasn’t much of a factor early in the season, he came on strong in the postseason and burned the Illini from deep in the Final Four, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring 15 points.Illinois fans may also remember senior guards Solo Ball and Silas Demaray Jr., both of whom bring a slew of experience to the fold. Demaray played extremely well in the Final Four win and flirted with a triple-double, while Ball remained an impact scorer.Underwood is returning a lot of talent as well in guys like Andrej Stojakovic, David Mirkovic and both Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivisic, while also bringing in a talented transfer in Stefan Vaaks and several talented freshmen. The Illini men’s basketball team recently released its full nonconference schedule for 2026-27, and while there are several games against top-tier opponents, it’ll be hard for any of them to have as much juice as the December showdown with the UConn Huskies.Circle 'em. Aug. 28—MINNEAPOLIS — A recent study from the Action Network, a sports news, betting and analysis media company, found that the average family of four can expect to spend $1,369 to attend a Vikings regular season home game.That number is derived from a sampling of ticket prices, parking and concession prices, and is actually down from 2025, when the same study found a family of four would spent $1,515 for a Vikings game.I don't know about you, but that's a little out of my price range, even though I'm only paying for a family of three. Somewhat inspired by the Action Network study, I wondered just how much of a discount I could negotiate by taking my family of three to the Vikings' lone preseason home game, and if it would be worth it to make the trip.Here's how it went.First things first, tickets.In the Action Network study, that made up the majority of the expense, with the analysis earmarking $1,267 for four tickets to a regular season game, or $317 per ticket.I went on Stubhub to look for tickets to last Saturday's Vikings/Ravens game — the only home preseason game the Vikings have this season — and started looking.I didn't need to be down on the field but I didn't want to be in the nosebleeds, either.I found three seats in the fifth row of the second deck in the end zone for $97. That's $97 total. For all three. Sold.So off we went to the Cities for some preseason football.Now. I'm not going to even try to tell you preseason NFL is really worth watching. It isn't. Every summer when the Hall of Fame game rolls around and preseason football starts I tell myself I'm excited for football and I'm going to watch the Vikings games, and every year I last less than a quarter before I'm turning it off.Being there in person is different, of course.US Bank Stadium is an architectural marvel. They still do the incredibly cool pregame introductions with the fire-breathing dragon in the end zone, they still do the 'Skol' chants and the gjallarhorn and if you're a Vikings fan it's hard not to get caught up in that even when you know in the back of your mind you're about to watch a bunch of guys who are going to be on the practice squad or getting day jobs in a couple weeks.And, and I can not stress this enough, if you are a parent trying to get a young child excited about football, preseason games are perfect.Why? Because your kid won't notice the difference.Our 10-year-old was excited just to ride the light rail to the stadium, and as more and more purple jerseys climbed aboard with each stop the more that excitement grew. When the train pulled up to US Bank Stadium he had to crane his neck up to see to the top of it, and his eyes grew wide as we stepped onto the street and took in the scene. It wasn't even his first time seeing the 66,000 seat stadium, nor mine, but it's still fairly awe-inspiring every time we go.The pregame scene was pretty much the same as a regular season game — food trucks, vendors and games.Stopping by the Viking ship near the entrance is a must, but being in that spot reminded me of Huberts, the sports bar that used to sit on that corner and served as the pre and post game hangout in the Metrodome days. Greatest sports bar ever. RIP Huberts.But just as I was feeling pretty good about having an NFL experience at a preseason game, the 10-year-old brought me back to reality."So, if this is a preseason game," he asked slowly, "does that mean everyone will play?"Oh, no, I thought. He's on to me."Probably not everybody," I said, wincing.I knew what question was coming next."Will Justin Jefferson play?"There it was. I couldn't bring myself to even get his hopes up, let alone feign ignorance."Probably not, bud," I said glumly.He thought for a second."That sucks," he said. "But I get it. They don't want him to get hurt, right?"I nodded."Will JJ McCarthy play?""A lot, probably," I answered.That made him happy, because news had not yet traveled to the 10-year-old that the former 1st round draft pick is shaping up to be a bust.Once inside the stadium we went for snacks, and realized later we had gone to a premium concession stand and not the one with basic fare. We paid $12 for a hot dog because we wouldn't pay $20 for a smash burger. There are allegedly cheaper hot dogs elsewhere. The $12 ones were really good, at least. Beers were $13. A soda was $6.The game was...not great. OK, not even good. Pretty bad.McCarthy connected with Tai Felton on a 50/50 ball (for a 50-yard gain) in the first quarter, and that was pretty much the only excitement of the day. Just a couple plays later he misfired on a 4th down throw that could've been a touchdown, and the Vikings never threatened the end zone again. The Ravens won 13-3. Former SDSU guard Evan Beerntsen was in uniform for the Ravens but I can't say I noticed him.McCarthy continued to be a disappointment. Carson Wentz looked OK. Max Brosmer, who was good in preseason last year and otherworldly bad in the regular season, was just thisworldly bad against the Ravens.What happened to McCarthy? We were there for his preseason debut back in 2024 against the Raiders and he looked terrific. The injury he suffered that day to wipe out his rookie year must've ruined him. Either that or the Vikings did.I suspected that since this was the Vikings' only preseason home game that US Bank would be full, and while there was a good crowd there were lots of empty seats. Certainly that won't be the case in a couple weeks when the Vikings open the regular season against the Packers.In fact, out of curiosity my wife went on Stubhub to see how much it would cost us to sit in the exact same seats we were in for the opener.Answer: $435 apiece.So.Including gas, hotel, tickets and concessions, it cost me less than $500 to take my family of three to a Vikings preseason game.It wasn't nearly as cool an experience as the real thing, but if you can't afford four figures for a weekend football excursion, it's a pretty good substitute.

The Indianapolis Colts were a tale of two halves last year. Before the bye week, they were a very watchable team that was sitting at 8-2 and poised to make the playoffs and win their division. After the bye week, they never won again and were incredibly difficult to watch. That seems to have been a heavy factor in ESPN’s Ben Solak's watchability rankings for the 2026 NFL season.Solak put the Colts at No. 19 in the league, which is next-to-last among teams in the AFC South. Here is what Solak had to say about Indianapolis:“The Colts were 19th in my preseason watchability rankings last season, as I penalized them for starting Daniel Jones -- whom I called a "cautious, unexplosive thrower" -- over Anthony Richardson Sr. Wrong! Jones and the Colts were as watchable as it gets in the first 10 weeks of the 2025 season. They were historically productive as an offense. "If anything, the 2026 Colts demand your time simply to see whether they can do it again. They almost certainly can't -- even if everyone were back and healthy, regression is a cruel inevitability. But with Jones still working back from a right Achilles tear, and Pierce and fellow receiver Josh Downs still not practicing, it might take a few weeks for the Colts to pick up steam.”When all else fails, the Colts still have running back Jonathan Taylor, who is always fun to watch, along with Tyler Warren, who was one of the more productive tight ends in football last season as a rookie. Taylor has been impressing fans around the NFL since he was drafted in 2020 and is coming off a monster season last year when he led the league in rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns and first downs. (Skip Dickstein) SARATOGA SPRINGS - In the first stakes race on opening day of this year's Saratoga Race Course summer meet, jockey Paco Lopez was at the center of an incident that brought down four horses at the top of the stretch and resulted in Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano missing several weeks due to injury.The following week, Lopez was handed a harsh sentence from the state Gaming Commission for his role in the incident - a 30-day suspension for "gross careless riding." He appealed that ban and earlier this month reached a settlement with the commission to reduce the suspension to 20 days.Lopez hasn't ridden at Saratoga since that incident, but neither has he served the suspension. That ban won't be enforced until next year's Saratoga meet, and Lopez will be back to ride at Saratoga on Saturday with high-profile mounts aboard Baby Vino in the Travers and Book'em Danno in the Forego.According to the text of the settlement, Lopez will be suspended for 20 calendar days during the 2027 meet at Saratoga, "commencing on a date designated by the Commission. The commencement and calculation of the suspension period shall be determined by the Commission."A rule passed by the state Gaming Commission in February 2022 requires jockeys to serve suspensions during the same meet at which their violations occurred, though it does not require those suspensions to occur during the same calendar year. Notably, jockeys Irad Ortiz Jr., Kendrick Carmouche, Katie Davis, Luis Saez and Chris Elliott all served suspensions at the beginning of this year's Saratoga meet for violations that occurred during 2025 races at Saratoga.A Gaming Commission spokesperson did not elaborate on why Lopez's suspension was pushed to 2027 instead of being enforced during the current meet beyond providing the Times Union with a copy of the settlement agreement.Under the terms of the settlement, Lopez waived the completion of his appeals hearing process and admitted to the violation charged in the original suspension.The settlement was reached between Lopez and the Gaming Commission on Aug. 10, just over a month after a ruling signed by state Gaming Commission steward Braulio Baeza Jr. handed down the 30-day ban for his actions during the eighth race on July 3.According to the initial ruling, I Love Giraffes, who was being ridden by Lopez, clipped heels with Pillar of Beauty and went down. That led to Lovely Grey, Paris Carver and Smexy, all of whom were following close behind I Love Giraffes, also falling. The incident resulted in Castellano being taken off the turf course in an ambulance and missing more than three weeks due to a back injury.Lopez appealed the initial suspension and a stay was granted, though he has not ridden at Saratoga since July 3. In the interim, Lopez continued to ride at four tracks - Delaware Park, Parx outside Philadelphia, Monmouth Park in New Jersey and Colonial Downs in Virginia.He has six mounts on Travers Day, four of which will come in the day's stakes races. In addition to riding Baby Vino in the Travers and Book'em Danno in the Forego, Lopez will ride Kappa Kappa in the Ballerina and Ultimate Love in the Lake Placid.Lopez leads all North American jockeys with 235 wins this year, according to Equibase.He's also faced numerous suspensions in his career. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy sounds like a man who’s prepared to keep four quarterbacks on the team’s initial 53-man roster. The Steelers wrapped up their final preseason game Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills, with Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph sitting out. Will Howard took the first-half snaps at quarterback in the 28-27 loss, with Drew Allar handling the third and fourth quarters.When asked if all four quarterbacks had earned roster spots, McCarthy said that would be “a very accurate evaluation.”McCarthy has never kept four in his 18 seasons as a head coach. But he’s been dropping bread crumbs all August, suggesting that four quarterbacks would be a strong possibility.“I feel good about the quarterback room,” McCarthy said, via ESPN.com. “I’ve been saying it for quite some time, and they’ve shown it on the field. We got two veterans that we can win with, and we got two young guys that we're excited about the future.”Howard, who also started the Steelers’ second preseason game, completed 9-of-15 pass attempts for 69 yards and two TDs, also throwing an interception and taking three sacks. He was evaluated for a possible concussion during and after the game.Allar, who has had a strong camp and preseason, completed 9-of-18 passes for 88 yards, with no sacks. His last-minute comeback attempt fell short with three straight incompletions to end the game.Keeping four QBs is rare, but there’s sense behind itKeeping four quarterbacks wouldn’t just be novel to McCarthy. It’s unusual on a league level, too. The last team believed to do so was the 2021 Saints. In fact, the more recent league-wide trend for the past decade-plus has been to favor fewer QBs on the active roster, not more. At Cutdown Day in 2025, 19 teams kept two quarterbacks and 13 kept three. None had four.So how should Steelers fans take this news? Positively.On the one hand, you could argue that a fourth quarterback would take a roster spot away from someone else. While nominally true, it’s fair to question the value of the 53rd man – a likely inactive most games, anyway – vs. stashing a potential starter or backup in the future.Rudolph might be the clear-cut backup to Rodgers right now, but he’s also a free agent this spring. It would have been extremely hard to imagine Allar, a third-round rookie, not making the initial roster, so this was as much about Howard’s performance as anything. Although he had some tough moments Thursday, and he has three INTs in the past two games combined, Howard reportedly had enough strong play early in camp to make him a candidate to stick around longer.According to local reports, there are a handful of players at other positions who could be affected by the four-QB possibility. Seventh-round RB-WR Eli Heidenreich out of Navy is a fan favorite battling for one of the final slots. RB Kaleb Johnson, a third-round pick in 2025, appears to be in real danger for a spot. Veteran LB Malik Harrison and OTs Broderick Jones and Jack Driscoll are other highly debated players who could end up on the cutting-room floor.One possible option to stash Will HowardThe Steelers do have another option available. Depending on the results of Thursday’s tests, they could opt to place him on injured reserve on Sunday as a way of keeping him but not having to place him on the 53-man roster. Each team can place up to two players on IR with a “designated to return” tag, counting against the season-long limit of eight IR-return designations.In this scenario, Howard would be forced to miss the first four games of the season. Once he’s cleared, the 21-day practice window would open for Howard, and the Steelers would need to activate him at the end of that window or be prepared to move him to season-ending IR.That possibility could exist. The Steelers probably are not prepared to play all four quarterbacks this season, and almost certainly not all four in the first month of the season. So the main question left would be whether they prefer Howard or Allar as the third option behind Rodgers and Rudolph. It might be a functional way to keep another non-QB on the roster early. The Steelers can then evaluate Howard carefully and wait for other injuries in order to keep their roster options flexible. Keeping four could be a reasonable approach, but there’s also another way to exploit the rules – fairly – and maintain the long-term vision and plan.
