APNEWS.COMTrumps massive import taxes havent done much economic damage yetEmpty shopping carts are collected from the parking lot at Walmart store in Burbank, Calif., on Thursday, April 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes, File)2025-05-19T10:00:08Z WASHINGTON (AP) For months, American consumers and businesses have been hearing that President Trumps massive import taxes tariffs would drive up prices and hurt the U.S. economy. But the latest economic reports dont match the doom and gloom: Inflation actually eased last month, and hiring was solid in April. For now, the disconnect has businesses and consumers struggling to reconcile what they were told to expect, what the numbers say and what they are seeing on the ground. Trump and his supporters are quick to point out that the trade wars of his first term didnt translate into higher overall inflation across the economy. So is it time to breathe easy? Not yet, economists say. Trumps tariffs are still huge the highest since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Theyre unpredictable: The president frequently announces tariffs only to suspend them days later and to conjure up new ones. And they are still working their way through the system. We had a good jobs report. We had a cool inflation report, and thats great, said Ernie Tedeschi, director of economics at Yale Universitys Budget Lab. But that should not give us comfort about what next month will be, particularly on inflation. Walmart, for example, warned its customers last week that prices will be going up for everything from clothing to car seats. Prices for some items like bananas have already increased. True, the truce with China last Monday dramatically reduced the risks to the U.S. economy, and U.S. and global stock markets rallied last week in relief. The United States dropped the import tax that Trump angrily imposed on China Americas third-biggest source of imports from an eye-watering 145% to 30%; Beijing cut its retaliatory tariffs from 125% to 10%. Economists at JPMorgan Chase, who had forecast last month that the China tariffs made a recession likely, dont expect one now. Trumps tariffs are the highest since the Great DepressionBut even with the lower levies on China, the Yale Budget Lab reported that the cost of Trumps trade war will be high. Climbing prices will reduce the purchasing power of the average household by $2,800. Shoe prices will rise 15% and clothing 14%. The tariffs will shave 0.7 percentage points off U.S. economic growth this year and increase the unemployment rate now a low 4.2% by nearly 0.4 percentage points.Trump has plastered 10% taxes on imports from almost every country on earth. Hes also imposed 25% duties on cars, aluminum, steel, and many imports from Canada and Mexico. The Yale Budget Lab estimates that Trump policies will push the average U.S. tariff rate to 17.8%, highest since 1934 and up from around 2.5% when Trump took office. (Other economists put his tariff rate at 14% to 15%.) During Trumps first term, the average tariff rose just 1 percentage point despite all the headlines generated by trade policies. Now, according to the budget lab, they are rising 15 percentage points. And the tariffs have only begun to bite. In April, the import tax revenues collected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection came to a tariff rate of just 4.5%, a fraction of whats coming, Tedeschi said. Thats partly because of delays in rolling out the tariffs, including technical glitches that prevented customs agents from collecting them for a couple of weeks. The full impact has also been delayed because companies beat the clock by bringing in foreign goods before Trumps tariffs took effect. Retailers and importers had also largely halted shipments of shoes, clothes, toys, and other items due to new tariffs, but many are resuming imports from China. Tedeschi, who was chief economist at President Joe Bidens Council of Economic Advisers, also notes that it just takes time for tariffs to translate into higher prices. During Trumps first term, his January 2018 levies on foreign washing machines didnt yield more expensive appliances until April that year. Still, a Federal Reserve study this month found that duties Trump imposed in 2018 and 2019 meant higher prices as soon as two months later, suggesting consumers could start paying more in June. Consumers are less willing to accept higher pricesThings have changed from the first time Trump was in the White House, when companies essentially passed along the entire cost of his tariffs. Now American consumers, still scarred by the burst of inflation that followed the COVID-19 pandemic, may be more reluctant to accept higher prices.Consumers werent inflation exhausted in 2018 the way that they are now, Tedeschi said. Surveys by Federal Reserve banks in Atlanta and Dallas have found that most companies would eat at least some of the tariff costs this time around. And one reason that the Labor Departments producer price index fell in April was that retailers and wholesalers reported lower profit margins, a sign that they may have been absorbing some of the tariff cost.Trump, who has long insisted that foreign countries and not U.S. companies or consumers pay his tariffs, on Saturday lashed out at Walmart for saying it would raise prices. On social media, he demanded that the giant retailer EAT THE TARIFFS, and do not charge valued customers anything. Ill be watching, and so will your customers!!! The economic damage doesnt just come from the cost of tariffs, but from the erratic way the president imposes them. For instance, the 145% China tariffs were just suspended for 90 days. Likewise, Trump has paused high taxes he slapped last month on imports from countries with which the United States runs trade deficits. Could those levies come back?Consumers are clearly fearful that the duties will boost prices, as consumer confidence surveys have plummeted since Trump began ramping up his tariff threats in February. The Conference Boards consumer confidence index has fallen for five straight months to its lowest level since the depths of the pandemic in May 2020. Costlier coffee and Christmas wreathes are comingSnowy Owl Coffee Roasters in Sandwich, Massachusetts, which imports beans from Brazil, Nicaragua, Burundi and other countries, is only now planning to raise its prices this week to cover the cost of the 10% tariffs. It plans to add 25 cents to 35 cents to the price for each cup.Tariffs are increasing costs and theyre adding to a lot of uncertainty around the potential for a downturn, said Shayna Ferullo, 44, co-owner of Snowy Owl. We are looking closely at the year ahead with the goal of consolidating and operating really, really tightly. Ferullo will also have to pay much more than she budgeted to renovate her shop in Brewster, Massachusetts -- one of her three retail locations -- because the contractor has raised his estimate, partly due to tariffs on building supplies. She has already elected to not fill one job after an employee left and is looking at ways automation could help reduce her labor costs, though she hasnt laid off any of her 35 employees.Jared Hendricks, CEO of Village Lighting Co., last month halted shipments of supplies he gets from China holiday storage bags, wreathes, holiday lights and garlands. Now that the U.S. and China have reached a truce, hes trying to get the products to the United States in time for the holidays. He estimates that it will take 10 to 20 days from China to the West Coast ports via ship and another 20 days to 40 days for the goods to go through U.S. Customs, then travel via Union Pacific Railways to his company in Utah. Given all the expected delays, Hendricks said hes worried that his holiday dcor wont arrive by Sept. 1 when it should start appearing in stores.Meanwhile, hes figuring out how to foot a $1 million bill for the tariffs. Hes hoping he can cover the cost by raising prices 10% to 15%. In the meantime, hes trying to secure a loan against his house to pay for the levies. We are moving forward, he said, but at great cost, personal risk, and weariness.____DInnocenzio reported from New York. APNEWS.COMPortugals election brings another minority government and a far-right riseIncumbent Prime Minister and leader of the center-right Social Democratic Party Luis Montenegro reacts with his supporters, following Portugal's general election, in Lisbon, Monday, May 19, 2025. (AP Photo/Armando Franca)2025-05-19T09:21:55Z LISBON, Portugal (AP) Portugals president convened the countrys political parties for consultations Monday, after a general election delivered another minority government as well as an unprecedented showing by populist party Chega (Enough) that added momentum to Europes shift to the far-right.The center-right Democratic Alliance, led by the Social Democratic Party, captured 89 seats in the 230-seat National Assembly to win Sundays ballot. The outcome leaves it without a parliamentary majority, however, and vulnerable to opposition parties that ousted it two months ago in a confidence vote after less than a year in power.Portugals third general election in three years provided little hope for ending the worst spell of political instability for decades in the European Union country of 10.6 million people. The Portuguese dont want any more early elections, Luis Montenegro, the Democratic Alliance leader and incoming prime minister, said late Sunday in an appeal for opposition parties to let him serve a full four-year term. We all have to be able to speak to each other and put the national interest first, he said.Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who has no executive power, was consulting with parties before inviting the election winner to form a government, in line with the constitution. Chega upsets Portugals power dynamicsChegas result shook up the traditional balance of power in a trend already witnessed elsewhere in Europe with parties such as Frances National Rally, the Brothers of Italy, and Alternative for Germany, which are now in the political mainstream.Chega leader Andre Ventura has appeared at events with the leaders of those parties in recent years. For the past 50 years, the Social Democrats and the center-left Socialist Party have alternated in power in Portugal.Chega collected the same number of seats as the Socialists 58 and could yet claim second place when four remaining seats decided by voters abroad are attributed in coming days. The two-party system is over, Ventura, a lawyer and former soccer pundit, said.Chega competed in its first election just six years ago, when it won one seat, and has fed off disaffection with the more moderate traditional parties. Campaigning under the slogan Save Portugal, it describes itself as a nationalist party and has focused on curbing immigration and cracking down on corruption. On the streets of Lisbon, 42-year-old bank employee Marta Costa said she felt disappointment and sadness at Chegas showing. We are losing the world and not building something decent for our children, she said. I think we are not placing enough value on freedom.Emilia Gordo, 55, said voters expressed a desire for change. They (Chega) are trying everything to bring about a change, the country feels a need for change. The Socialists, meanwhile, are without a leader after Pedro Nuno Santos said he was standing down after the partys worst result since 1987.The Democratic Alliance, which also includes the smaller Popular Party, lost a confidence vote in parliament in March as opposition lawmakers teamed up against it. That triggered an early election, which had been due in 2028. The confidence vote was sparked by a political storm around potential conflicts of interest in the business dealings of Prime Minister Lus Montenegros family law firm. Montenegro has denied any wrongdoing.Corruption scandals have dogged Portuguese politics in recent years, helping fuel the rise of Chega. But the party has recently fallen foul of its own lawmakers alleged wrongdoing. One is suspected of stealing suitcases from the Lisbon airport and selling the contents online, and another allegedly faked the signature of a dead woman. Both resigned. Immigration and housing concern votersChega owes much of its success to its demands for a tighter immigration policy that have resonated with voters.Portugal has witnessed a steep rise in immigration. In 2018, there were fewer than a half-million legal immigrants in the country, according to government statistics. By early this year, there were more than 1.5 million, many of them Brazilians and Asians working in tourism and farming.Thousands more lack the proper documents to be in Portugal. The Democratic Alliance government announced two weeks before the election that it was expelling about 18,000 foreigners living in the country without authorization. Though such a step is routine, the timing drew accusations that it was trying to capture votes from Chega.A housing crisis has also fired up debate. House prices and rents have been soaring for the past 10 years, due in part to an influx of white-collar foreigners who have driven up prices.House prices jumped another 9% last year, said the National Statistics Institute, a government body. Rents in and around the capital Lisbon, where around 1.5 million people live, last year saw the steepest rise in 30 years, climbing more than 7%, the institute said. The problem is compounded by Portugal being one of Western Europes poorest countries. The average monthly salary last year was around 1,200 euros ($1,340) before tax, according to the statistics agency. The government-set minimum wage this year is 870 euros ($974) a month before tax.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 144 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

APNEWS.COMSesame Street moves in with Netflix, but will stay on PBSElmo of the film "Being Elmo" poses for a portrait in the Fender Music Lodge during the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utahm Jan. 24, 2011. (AP Photo/Victoria Will, File)2025-05-19T15:04:10Z NEW YORK (AP) Netflix has thrown Sesame Street a safety net with a new streaming deal that offers the popular childrens staple a broad reach while keeping it on its long-standing home, PBS, at the same time, the companies announced Monday.Starting later this year, new episodes will run on Netflix, PBS and the PBS Kids app on the same day. No specific premiere date was immediately announced. Select past episodes will be available on Netflix worldwide. The change for the more than 50-year-old show comes after Warner Bros. Discovery which had aired the show since 2016 last year decided not to renew its deal for new episodes that air on HBO and Max, though episodes will remain there until 2027.This unique public-private partnership will enable us to bring our research-based curriculum to young children around the world with Netflixs global reach, while ensuring children in communities across the U.S. continue to have free access on public television to the Sesame Street they love, Sesame Workshop said in its press release. Sal Perez, the shows executive producer and a Sesame Workshop vice president, told The Associated Press recently that segments on the new season will be longer and really focused on character, while also focusing on its audiences emotional well-being and development. For Season 56, episodes will revolve around one 11-minute story, the Netflix release said. The more kids want to hang out with our characters on Sesame Street, the more theyre going to take in those lessons, said Perez, adding that there would also be updates to the shows look and feel. The new season will also feature more exploration of the Sesame Street neighborhood and a look inside the legendary two-story brownstone at 123 Sesame Street that houses Elmo, Bert and Ernie and more.I strongly believe that our educational programming for children is one of the most important aspects of our service to the American people, and Sesame Street has been an integral part of that critical work for more than half a century, said Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS. Were proud to continue our partnership in the pursuit of having a profound impact on the lives of children for years to come. Sesame Street has been shown in more than 150 countries, amassing more than 200 Emmys in addition to Grammy and Peabody awards and a Kennedy Center Honor for lifetime artistic achievement. Its fan-favorite characters like Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird and the Cookie Monster will now reside along the likes of Ms. Rachel, Blippi and the residents of CoComelon Lane. Netflix says Kids and Family programming makes up 15% of the streamers total viewing.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 118 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

APNEWS.COMStorms and tornadoes across central US kill dozens and damage homesRedeemer Lutheran Church is damaged, Sunday, May 18, 2025, along Highway 27 in Somerset, Ky., after a severe storm passed through the area. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)2025-05-19T15:34:58Z LONDON, Ky. (AP) Officials in Kansas and Texas were evaluating damage on Monday after tornadoes touched down overnight, just days after more than two dozen people were killed in storms that swept through parts of the Midwest and South.Kentucky was hardest hit by last weeks storms. A devastating tornado damaged hundreds of homes, tossed vehicles, left many homeless, and killed at least 19 people, most of them in southeastern Laurel County. Meteorologists predicted a fresh multi-day mix of dangerous weather conditions across the central U.S. with heavy rains, thunderstorms and potential tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service. A powerful tornado tore through Reno County, Kansas, late Sunday, moving through rural areas and into the small community of Plevna, county Emergency Management officials said in a news release on Monday. The tornado damaged several homes, trees and utility poles, then continued to cause damage for about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north and east of the city. Damage was extensive, but no injuries or deaths were reported, officials said. A National Weather Service team planned to head out Monday to survey Plevna tornado damage, said Andy Kleinsasser, a meteorologist with the services office in Wichita. There were no known injuries or fatalities, Kleinsasser said. The tornado started in Stafford County and cut a path that was at least 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) long through Reno County, he said. In the western part of Kansas, Interstate 70 was reduced to one lane near Grinnell, a town of 260 people, because of tornado damage and downed power lines. The city of Greensburg, Kansas, said on social media Monday morning that there were power outages but it was safe after the storm scare. In 2007, Greensburg was slammed by an EF5 tornado that was more than 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) wide and packed winds up to 205 mph (330kph), leveling more than 90% of the town of 1,400 and killing 12. The weather service confirmed a large and extremely dangerous tornado Sunday afternoon near Mingus, Texas, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) west of Fort Worth. Significant damage but no immediate casualties were reported in Palo Pinto County, which includes Mingus, a sheriffs office dispatcher said. Officials were evaluating damage on Monday morning, said county Emergency Management Coordinator Chad Jordan. The Kentucky storms emerged from a weather system Friday that killed seven in Missouri and two in northern Virginia, authorities said. Damage assessments were underway Sunday as Kentucky readied its request for federal disaster assistance, Gov. Andy Beshear said. In St. Louis, Mayor Cara Spencer said five people died, 38 were injured and more than 5,000 homes were affected. About 130 miles (210 kilometers) south, a tornado in Scott County killed two people, injured several others and destroyed several homes, Sheriff Derick Wheetley wrote on social media.About 1,200 tornadoes strike the U.S. annually, and they have been reported in all 50 states. Researchers found in 2018 that deadly tornadoes were occurring less frequently in the traditional Tornado Alley of Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas and more frequently in parts of the more densely populated and tree-filled mid-South. The Trump administration has massively cut staffing of National Weather Service offices, with outside experts worrying about how it would affect warnings in disasters such as tornadoes. The office in Jackson, Kentucky, which was responsible for the area around London, Kentucky, had a March 2025 vacancy rate of 25%; the Louisville, Kentucky, weather service staff was down 29%; and the St. Louis office was down 16%, according to calculations by weather service employees obtained by The Associated Press. The Louisville office also was without a permanent boss the meteorologist in charge as of March, according to the staffing data.Experts said any vacancy rate above 20% is a critical problem.___See more photos from the severe storms in the South and Midwest here.___Associated Press writers Sophia Tareen in Chicago and Matthew Brown in Billings, Montana, contributed to this report.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 102 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

APNEWS.COMSinger Dawn Richard says Sean Diddy Combs threatened her with death after she saw him beat CassieCORRECTS NAME SPELLING: Witness Dawn Richard testifies in Manhattan federal court during the sex trafficking and racketeering trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs, Monday, May 19, 2025, in New York. (Elizabeth Williams via AP)2025-05-19T14:18:57Z NEW YORK (AP) The Sean Diddy Combs sex trafficking trial resumed Monday when singer Dawn Richard testified that the hip-hop mogul threatened to kill her if she told anyone that she saw him beat his longtime girlfriend.Richard told a jury in Manhattan federal court that Combs issued the threat the day after she witnessed the Bad Boy Records founder try to hit Casandra Cassie Ventura with a skillet and then beat her. She said he told her and another woman who saw the attack that we could go missing if either revealed what they saw.Assistant U.S. Attorney Mitzi Steiner asked Richard what she took we could go missing to mean. That we could die, Richard responded, saying she was shocked because all of this happened just as she was beginning to record with Diddy Dirty Money, a musical trio she formed with Combs and another R&B singer. Combs, 55, is on trial in New York on sex trafficking and racketeering charges alleging that he exploited his status as an entertainment power broker to abuse women, including Cassie, through threats and violence. He has pleaded not guilty and his lawyers have argued that prosecutors compiled proof of domestic violence, but not federal crimes. In four days on the witness stand last week, Cassie testified that she wanted a loving relationship with Combs during their nearly 11 years together but was instead subjected to weekly drug-fueled freak-offs with male sex workers that left her too exhausted and damaged to pursue her music career. Shortly after Cassie finished testifying on Friday, Richard began her stint on the stand, saying she witnessed Combs attack Cassie on multiple occasions, including during a visit to Combs home recording studio in 2009, when Richard said she and another woman saw Combs hit Cassie on the head and beat her on the ground. She said Combs tried to hit Cassie over the head with a skillet, but Cassie was able to deflect it. On Monday, Steiner asked Richard how frequently she witnessed Combs beat his girlfriend. Frequently, Richard said. He would punch her, choke her, drag her, slap her in the mouth. I saw him kick her, punch her in the stomach. We wouldnt even know where it came from.Richard, who also performed in the group Danity Kane, said Combs staff, including his bodyguards, also witnessed violence. They wouldnt react. They wouldnt do anything, Richard testified.Richard supported Cassies testimony that Combs had stifled Cassies fledgling singing career, saying she heard Combs tell Cassie that he owned her and that any success she had would be on his terms. It would come when he said it would come, Richard said.Bad Boy Records signed Cassie to a 10-album deal in 2006, but only released one the self-titled Cassie, which came out the same year. Cassie and Combs started dating in 2007 and broke up for good in 2018.Cassie testified last week that although she continued to go to the recording studio and work on songs, Combs refused to release them. WWW.404MEDIA.COTelegram Gave Authorities Data on More than 20,000 UsersTelegram gave authorities the data on 22,777 of its users in the first three months of 2025, according to a GitHub that reposts Telegrams transparency reports. That number is a massive jump from the same period in 2024, which saw Telegram turn over data on only 5,826 of its users to authorities. From January 1 to March 31, Telegram sent over the data of 1,664 users in the U.S.Telegram is a popular social network and messaging app thats also a hub of criminal activity. Some people use the site to stay connected with friends and relatives and some people use it to spread deepfake scams, promote gambling, and sell guns.CEO Pavel Durov long promoted the social network as a safe space for free speech and resisted cooperation with national governments. That changed last year when authorities in France arrested him after Telegram refused to turn over data related to a child abuse investigation. Now Durov and Telegram are more cooperative with government requests for user data. As part of that process, Telegram runs a bot that will tell users how many requests the service has received and how many users have been affected. The bot only reports on data where the user is registered, but there are multiple sites and Telegram channels that share the transparency reports for a given country as they refresh. The technologist Tek, who works at Human Rights Watch, organized the data on a GitHub.According to the GitHub data, Telegram processed at least 13,615 requests and turned over the data of 22,277 users in the first quarter of 2025. The report said that 576 of those were U.S. requests and 1,664 users were affected.Durov had been stuck in France since his arrest, but his lawyers recently negotiated a temporary release from the country. He flew to Dubai on March 15 and started taking small shots at the French government in social media posts.A centrist presidential candidate won an election in Romania over the weekend after fears that a hard-right populist may take power. In a post on Telegram the morning after the election, Durov implied that France had asked him to suppress the far-right candidate on Telegram.A Western European government (guess which ) approached Telegram, asking us to silence conservative voices in Romania ahead of todays presidential elections. I flatly refused. Telegram will not restrict the freedoms of Romanian users or block their political channels, Durov said. You cant defend democracy by destroying democracy. You cant fight election interference by interfering with elections. You either have freedom of speech and fair elections or you dont. And the Romanian people deserve both.Durov named the country, and the official who made the ask, in a post on X. This spring at the Salon des Batailles in the Htel de Crillon, Nicolas Lerner, head of French intelligence, asked me to ban conservative voices in Romania ahead of elections. I refused. We didnt block protesters in Russia, Belarus, or Iran. We wont start doing it in Europe, Durov said. The French intelligence service has denied any of this took place. In the first three months of 2024, Telegram took 4 requests from France and turned over the data of 17 people, according to the data in the GitHubIt fielded none from Romania. In the same time period a year later it fielded 668 requests from France and turned over the data of 1,425 users. Romania got on the board too, with 37 requests of its own that affected 88 users.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 130 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.404MEDIA.CO23andMe Sale Shows Your Genetic Data Is Worth $17Monday, the genetic pharmaceutical company Regeneron announced that it is buying genetic sequencing company 23andMe out of bankruptcy for $256 million. The purchase gives us a rough estimate for the current monetary value of a single persons genetic data: $17.Regeneron is a drug company that intends to acquire 23andMes Personal Genome Service (PGS), Total Health and Research Services business lines, together with its Biobank and associated assets, for $256 million and for 23andMe to continue all consumer genome services uninterrupted, the company said in a press release Monday. Regeneron is working on personalized medicine and new drug discovery, and the company itself has sequenced the genetic information of nearly three million people in research studies, it said. This means that Regeneron itself has the ability to perform DNA sequencing, and suggests that the critical thing that it is acquiring is 23andMes vast trove of genetic data. The most recently available numbers show that 23andMe collected DNA from roughly 15 million people, meaning that 23andMes genetic data is worth roughly $17 per person. 23andMe does not perform full genome sequences. It instead does DNA genotyping, which looks at specific parts of the genome that tend to vary from person to person. The sale to Regeneron means that the genetic data collected by 23andMe will likely be used for the development of new drugs, which felt like the most likely and perhaps best-case scenario for the companys bankruptcy. In the past, genetic data companies have been sold to larger companies that explicitly make DNA forensics products for law enforcement. Regeneron said in the press release that it intends to ensure compliance with 23andMes consumer privacy policies and applicable laws with respect to the treatment of customer data. As the successful bidder, Regeneron is prepared to detail the intended use of customer data and the privacy programs and security controls in place for review by a court-appointed, independent Customer Privacy Ombudsman and other interested parties. The sale price to Regeneron suggests that the overall monetary value of this type of data has decreased in recent years. In 2018, the drug giant GSK invested $300 million into 23andMe in exchange for the genetic data of 5 million people, which means it valued an individuals genetic data at roughly $60. The massive private equity firm Blackstone bought Ancestry.com, a company that sequences genetic data but also has other parts of its business, for $4.7 billion in 2020.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 133 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.404MEDIA.COKansas Mom Sues Porn Sites Because Her Son Visited Chaturbate 30 TimesA Kansas mother who left an old laptop in a closet is suing multiple porn sites because her teenage son visited them on that computer. The complaints, filed last week in the U.S. District Court for Kansas, allege that the teen had unfettered access to a variety of adult streaming sites, and accuses the sites of providing inadequate age verification as required by Kansas law.A press release from the National Center for Sexual Exploitation, which is acting as co-counsel in this lawsuit, names Chaturbate, Jerkmate, Techpump Solutions (Superporn.com), and Titan Websites (Hentai City) as defendants in four different lawsuits.According to the complaints, the mother, Jane Doe, put an old laptop in a closet at home and forgot about it. Her son, 14-year-old Q.R., found it in working condition. He visited Chaturbate 30 times between August and October 2024, the complaint against Chaturbate says. Jane Doe was vigilant in monitoring Q.R.s devices to prevent his exposure to harmful material during this important developmental stage of his life, NCOSE wrote in its press release. NCOSE is a conservative anti-porn lobbying group thats gone after adult material on Reddit and Twitter in the past, and has supported efforts to ban Pornhub entirely.Do you know anything else about how adult sites are handling age verification laws, or how lobbyists are pushing for them? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at sam.404. Otherwise, send me an email at sam@404media.co.In April of last year, Kansas passed one of the most extreme age verification bills into law. Any commercial entity that knowingly shares or distributes material that is harmful to minors on a website and such material appears on 25% or more of the webpages viewed on such website in any calendar month falls under the purview of this law, sites that dont comply could be fined up to $10,000 for each violation, and parents could sue for damages of at least $50,000.Kansas criminal law defines material harmful to minors as involving nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement or sadomasochistic abuse.Age Verification Laws Drag Us Back to the Dark Ages of the InternetInvasive and ineffective age verification laws that require users show government-issued ID, like a drivers license or passport, are passing like wildfire across the U.S.404 MediaEmanuel MaibergBenjamin Bull, General Counsel for NCOSE, told local news outlet KAKE that he hopes this lawsuit will open up the floodgates of similar age verification based challenges in other states. Eighteen states, including almost all of the U.S. South, have age verification laws in place, according to the Free Speech Coalition, an adult industry advocacy organization. Free speech advocates and internet safety experts say these laws are archaic, ineffective for actually controlling childrens access to adult materials, and chilling for adults rights to view adult material.Last year, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Chaturbate and other porn sites, accusing them of not complying with Texas' age verification law; Chaturbate paid Texas $675,000 to settle. The plaintiff in these lawsuits against Chaturbate and others are asking for at least $75,000 in damages in each complaint, for actual damages resulting from Q.R.s access to material that is harmful to minors, including but not limited to past medical expenses, future medical expenses, past and future lost services and disability, past and future pain, suffering, and disability. According to the law, each violation could cost the porn sites $50,000.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 120 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.PRIDE.COMPedro Pascal's arms on Cannes 2025 red carpet send the internet into a thirsty furyWhat did we do to deserve Pedro Pascal? Our favorite daddy has once again sent the internet ablaze, and this time, all it took was showing off his arms.Over the weekend, Pascal made waves for his playful behavior at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where he showed up to support and promote his upcoming film, Eddington. For what it's worth, the A24 film, directed by Ari Aster, received a five-minute standing ovation, which may or may not have had a direct correlation with his arms. I mean, look at the material:Whew.Pascal showed up on the red carpet in the above black muscle tank, which gloriously showed off those biceps we've all collectively decided we want to sleep in. If you ask me, I'd have the best night of sleep if I were held in those arms. A man can dream, can't he?Eddington is an American contemporary Western film that depicts the social and political turmoil during the COVID-19 pandemic in the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico. It centers around a standoff between the local sheriff, Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and Pascal, who plays the town's mayor Ted Garcia and is running for reelection. The movie itself caused a bit of divide and wound up being one of the most divisive movies at the festival due to its depiction of everyone's worst fears during the pandemic, as well as the close proximity we still are to that time. It's also viewed as a social satire that both mocks and examines the panic from that year, with little pokes at both the liberal and conservative sides of the coin.At a press conference during the festival, Pascal addressed some of the controversy by saying, "It's very scary to participate in a movie that speaks to issues like this. Its far too intimidating a question for me to address. I'm not informed enough. I want people to be safe and protected. I want very much to be on the right side of history." (@) He added, "I feel like [Aster] wrote something that was all our worst fears as that lockdown experience was already a fracturing society. This was building toward an untethered sense of reality. There is a point of no going back. I was overwhelmed by that fear, and it's wonderful that it was confirmed by Ari."Outside of the seriousness of the film and the discussions during the press conference--which also included Pascal defending immigrants and telling us he came as a refugee from Chile to flee a dictatorship--his personality influenced the wildfire that sent fans in a frenzy that reminded us we really don't deserve him.Him spinning out of camera like this with a little kiss? It's just too damn cute for words. (@) His acting skills have made us h-word, been viewed as one of the hottest male celebs, and has wielded multiple types of swords throughout his 20-plus years in the industry. All of this plays a part in why the gays and the rest of the world totally love this man. He's made jokes about being into submission, defended Rachel Zegler over the Snow White controversy, and has shown what non-toxic masculinity looks like through his friendship with Oscar Isaac. His willingness to be a goofball at events like Cannes, where he stuck out his tongue, took selfies with adoring fans, and even kissed Alexander Skarsgrd, also has everyone hanging on his every move. It seems like every time he shows up to an event and every acting role he takes on just makes him a bigger celebrity that we simply cannot get enough of. (@) We collectively share a thirst for this man that is borderline unrivaled by any other we have ever seen. Pascal's established himself as a staunch and fierce ally for the LGBTQ+ community. He's passionately defended his trans sister, Lux, played bisexual characters like Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, and has multiple bromances that send our fantasies out of this world.Plus, he has at least admitted that he wants to make out with actor Kieran Culkin, and we very much maintain that this needs to happen, and we'd love the "pics or it didn't exist" resolution after he talked about this during the SAG Awards earlier this year. In a world that's so chaotic, we need someone like Pascal to deliver us humor, drama, and equality. In our opinion, he deserves every good thing that happens to him and more, and we remain eternally grateful for everything he gives us.Especially those damn arms.Although the people of the Cannes Film Festival have been lucky enough to see Eddington, the rest of us are going to have to wait until July 18 for the film to see its U.S. release. In the meantime, you can watch Pascal on the current season of HBO's The Last of Us.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 97 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр
