7 Revealing Findings from a First-of-Its-Kind Map and Analysis of American LGBTQ Bars
Design by Sam Donndelinger. Data by Datawrapper.Subscribe nowNightlife has long been a tool for queer communities in America to find each other, celebrate identity and feel accepted. In rural and urban areas alike, gay bars provide an enlighteningif imperfectwindow into understanding the health and culture of Americas LGBTQ population. As anti-trans legislation and threats to marriage equality mount, many queer Americans are flocking to shield states with greater legal protections. For some, finding the nearest gay bar serves as a first step to finding community in their new homes. In a first-of-its-kind analysis, Uncloseted Media mapped every single LGBTQ nightlife location in the U.S. The data is based on a 2023 census of gay bars and clubs by sociologist and Oberlin College professor Greggor Mattson and was updated in 2025 by Columbia Journalism School graduate students Dan OConnor and Tory Lysik1.The findings reveal unexpected trends that inform us about the state of the American gay bar andmore broadlyqueer culture in the U.S. Here they are:1. There are gay bars in every state except Wyoming and North DakotaUnsurprisingly, states with large cities tend to have the most LGBTQ nightlife. California takes the top spot with 128 gay bars and Texas comes in at a distant second with 67.New York is third, with 61 bars, followed closely by Floridas 59 bars. Illinois rounds out the top five with 40 bars.Montana, South Dakota, Kansas, New Mexico and Vermont have just one gay bar. Wyoming and North Dakota have none. For someone in northwestern North Dakota, it would take over 7 hours of driving across roughly 500 miles to reach Club David, the nearest gay bar in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. If they have a passport handy and are short on time, they could make the four-hour trek north of the border to Q Nightclub and Lounge in Regina, Saskatchewan. For Wyoming, advocates say the states conservative values are not the main reason theres no gay bar. Quite simply, Demand is limited in a state of half a million people spread out over almost 100,000 square miles, Sara Burlingame, who serves as Wyoming Equalitys executive director, told Uncloseted Media.Despite this, she says there are still options. Bars in Laramie, the states main college town, host occasional drag nights and other queer-focused events. Other people leave the state entirely, flocking to Salt Lake City or Denver. For generations, if you were LGBTQ and you didn't want the struggle of the legislature fighting over whether you should have rights or not, or churches preaching against you, or someone who was raised to believe that they should be violent towards you You graduated high school, and then you got the hell out of dodge, says Burlingame. And when queer people leave, demand for gay nightlife declines further.2. When you control LGBTQ nightlife per capita, different results emergeD.C. has the most gay bars per capita, with 13 bars serving a population of slightly more than 1 million residents.Delaware comes in second, with roughly 700,000 residents and six bars, four of which are in the resort town of Rehoboth Beach, a popular gay travel destination.Hawaii, with 5.53 gay bars per million residents, comes in third. The islands blend the classic gay bar with Indigenous Polynesian motifs. Hulas Bar and Lei Stand is one of the states eight gay bars and has served locals and tourists alike for over 50 years.Rhode Island comes in fourth with 5.39 gay bars per million people, and Louisiana rounds out the top five.In addition to Wyoming and North Dakota, there are six states with fewer than one gay bar per million people. Alabama, with 5 gay bars, has just 0.97 bars per million people. New Jersey, just outside two of the countrys largest queer nightlife hubs in New York City and Philadelphia, has just 0.53 bars per million residents. And Kansas comes in last place with just 0.34 gay bars per million residents.3. Most bars are in urban areas, but dont count out rural queersMapping the bars by county shows a concentration around the largest cities. Los Angeles County, New York County (Manhattan) and Cook County (Chicago) stand out. But so do counties with smaller cities, including Columbus, El Paso and Salt Lake.266 of the countrys 750 gay bars were in the 20 most populous counties. That means roughly 35.5% of the nations gay bars exist in an area with just 18.5% of the U.S. population. The map reveals that there are large swathes of the Mountain West that lack any dedicated spaces for gay nightlife. Stathis Yeros, a historian and designer who has traveled the country researching queer spaces, says rural LGBTQ folks are used to this and are willing to drive long distances to visit a queer watering hole. What I have found in the places I visited is that [the] separation between urban and rural doesn't quite exist in a big part of the U.S., he says. You can go to an event in Atlanta, and you can go back to your house in the outskirts of Birmingham.4. In big cities, neighborhood bars struggle to compete with gayborhood barsEven in areas famous for their nightlife, access to queer spaces can be uneven. Only three of New York Citys five boroughs have a single queer bar.Manhattan, with its storied gayborhoods like the West Village, Chelsea, Hells Kitchen and Harlem, is home to 36 gay bars. In Hells Kitchen, a 15-minute walk with only small detours away from 9th Avenue could bring you past 10 gay bars.Brooklyn is home to five gay bars, and Queens has four, but the Bronx and Staten Island have zero. When the Bronx lost its last gay bar in 2023, its owner told the Bronx Times, Its just difficult when youre up against Manhattan. The Manhattan pull may explain New Jerseys small gay bar scene. The state has two gay bars in Jersey City, one in suburban Bergen County and two on the shore.Similar patterns can be seen in Chicago and Los Angeles, with nearly all of Chicagos gay bars in the citys Northeast, while Southern California has clusters in West Hollywood, Long Beach and Palm Springs.Gay bars have been concentrating, says Greggor Mattson, the sociologist whose team first collected the census data on gay bars nationwide. Think about the possibilities of barhopping versus going to a single bar.5. Blue states tend to have more gay bars, but the correlation is not strongWhile an imperfect measure of a states political leaning, there is a moderate correlation between Kamala Harris 2024 presidential vote share and the number of gay bars. D.C., where Harris got just over 90% of the vote, has the most gay bars for its population. And she earned the smallest vote share in bar-less Wyoming. But the data also reveals several hotspots in conservative states. Ohio, which voted 55% for Trump in 2024 and swung red, has 33 gay bars and beet red Louisiana has 22 bars, mostly around New Orleans. That suggests little impact of party politics on gay bars, even though 86% of LGBTQ voters cast their ballot for Harris, according to one exit poll.6. Lesbian bars and POC-focused queer bars are harder to findMany bars continue to draw crowds of white gay men, while bars catering to people of color (POC), queer women and trans folks are rare. There are now individuals, increasingly, who identify as LGBTQ+ who don't necessarily feel safe or empowered or that they are with others like themselves when they walk through the doors of a gay bar, says Amin Ghaziani, an urban sexualities researcher at the University of British Columbia.Mattsons data found that while 66% of LGBTQ bars appear to cater to both men and women, 24% cater primarily to men.Bars catering mostly to queer women are rare. Per 2025 numbers from the Lesbian Bar Project, there are 36 lesbian bars across the countrythats just 4.8% of all queer bars. And per Mattsons data, just 6.6% of queer bars catered to POC.7. Bars are importantbut theres so much to queer cultureThose without a gay bar in town dont necessarily need a watering hole to find community. Every August in Wyoming, over 500 queer people from across the Mountain West flock to Medicine Bow National Forest for Rendezvous, a five-day LGBTQ campout.Every August, hundreds flock to Wyoming Equalitys Rendezvous campout. (Courtesy of Sara Burlingame)Burlingame of Wyoming Equality says the unique character of her states queer community sometimes surprises outsiders given its overlap with the areas outdoorsy and gun-toting culture. LGBTQ Wyomingites are still Wyomingites, she says.Queer communities across the country are shaped by politics, geography, distinct histories and circumstances, making nationwide generalizations impossible. Yeros, who has spent time researching queer spaces in the South, emphasizes that each community has its own story. What happens in Atlanta is not necessarily the same as what happen[s] in New Orleans, he says. It's certainly not the same as what happens in San Francisco or New York or Chicago. If objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism is important to you, please consider making a tax-deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor, Resource Impact, by clicking this button:Donate to Uncloseted Media1The data was initially collected in 2023 by a team of researchers at Oberlin College led by Greggor Mattson. The team used Damron Guides, a historic gay travel guide, as well as online listings to create a census of gay nightlife spots nationwide. This data was analyzed for research on the character of gay bars and was published in June 2023.To determine what counted as a gay bar, the researchers checked reviews and online listings. Those that appeared to be considered gay bars by the local community were also counted, according to Mattson. The data, courtesy of Mattson, was then checked by data journalists Dan OConnor and Tory Lysik and updated in early 2025. Bars that appeared to have closed since April 2023 were removed from the data. The data does not include bars that have opened in the past two years. While this data aims to illustrate the state of LGBTQ nightlife nationwide, some errors are likely. Some bars may not be included if they were missed in the original coding process, removed erroneously, or opened recently.

Rowling that also served to all other transphobes and homophobes of the world.Jade who was introduced to many pop music fans as a member of the girl group Little Mix had a performance at Mighty Hoopla Festival in South London that featured a special message not only to Rowling, but also to anyone else who has homophobic and/or transphobic beliefs, during her song "FUFN (F*ck U For Now)."@adamandrws@JADE is our IT girl #fufn #jade #mightyhooplaJade called out several things for the audience to reply "f*ck you" to, including "performative allyship," "homophobes," and "transphobes." Still, it was the Harry Potter author who got the loudest reaction from the crowd. As Jade shouted "J.K. Rowling," the audience gave its loudest "f*ck you" yet, with many attendees also throwing up their middle fingers. Jade is, obviously, far from being the only celebrity to call out Rowling and her anti-trans views in recent years. In April, Rowling posted a picture of herself smoking a cigar and having a drink, captioned "I love it when a plan comes together," in reference to the U.K. Supreme Court's recent ruling that trans women aren't considered women under the country's Equality Act.The Last of Us and The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal, who has a transgender sister, then commented on an Instagram video made by activist and writer Tariq Ra'ouf denouncing Rowling's post."Awful disgusting s is exactly right. Heinous LOSER behavior," Pascal commented.Rowling's attacks on the LGBTQ+ community don't just stop at misgendering trans people. She's also asserted that trans kids don't exist, and has funded an organization that fights to remove trans people's rights "in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces." Recently, Rowling has even targeted the asexual community.

Child Given First Stock To Learn About Losing Everything Early
HUNTINGTON, NYEagerly explaining to the 9-year-old that the investment was already down 11% since purchase, Marcus Aldaco reportedly gave his son Eddie his first stock Wednesday so the boy could learn early about losing everything. I want Eddie to have a firm grasp of how to sink money into a hot stock and then get absolutely fucked by the market, said Aldaco, who has lost nearly $80,000 by investing in high-risk stocks over the past five years. Financial literacy is important, which is why Im teaching him the ins and outs of buying prudent financial vehicles like options, futures, and meme stocks. My hope is that hell start using his allowance to go big on a speculative biotech firm that skyrockets before eventually going bust, leaving him absolutely devastated as he watches that ticker tumble downward. I wish my dad had taught me how to invest in volatile markets when I was littleI can only imagine where Id be now. Aldaco added that he hopes Eddie sees him as a financial role model and that he had recently pulled everything out of his 401(k) in order to invest in crypto. The post Child Given First Stock To Learn About Losing Everything Early appeared first on The Onion.

The IRS Tax Filing Software TurboTax Is Trying to Kill Just Got Open Sourced
The IRS open sourced much of its incredibly popular Direct File software as the future of the free tax filing program is at risk of being killed by Intuits lobbyists and Donald Trumps megabill. Meanwhile, several top developers who worked on the software have left the government and joined a project to explore the future of tax filing in the private sector.Direct File is a piece of software created by developers at the US Digital Service and 18F, the former of which became DOGE and is now unrecognizable, and the latter of which was killed by DOGE. Direct File has been called a free, easy, and trustworthy piece of software that made tax filing more efficient. About 300,000 people used it last year as part of a limited pilot program, and those who did gave it incredibly positive reviews, according to reporting by Federal News Network. But because it is free and because it is an example of government working, Direct File and the IRSs Free File program more broadly have been the subject of years of lobbying efforts by financial technology giants like Intuit, which makes TurboTax. DOGE sought to kill Direct File, and currently, there is language in Trumps massive budget reconciliation bill that would kill Direct File. Experts say that ending [the] Direct File program is a gift to the tax-prep industry that will cost taxpayers time and money. That means its quite big news that the IRS released most of the code that runs Direct File on Github last week. And, separately, three people who worked on itChris Given, Jen Thomas, Merici Vintonhave left government to join the Economic Security Projects Future of Tax Filing Fellowship, where they will research ways to make filing taxes easier, cheaper, and more straightforward. They will be joined by Gabriel Zucker, who worked on Direct File as part of Code for America.Establishing trust with taxpayers was core to our approach for designing and building Direct File, Given wrote on his personal blog. By creating the most accurate option for filing, by making taxes accessible to all, by keeping taxpayer data secure, and now, by publicly sharing Direct Files code, the Direct File team showed our dedication to earning taxpayers trust.A screenshot of the repository on GithubWhen the code for Direct File was released on Github last week, some people speculated that, because of the political pressure against it, its release must have been an act of resistance by someone within the IRS. But the open sourcing of the program was always part of the plan, and was required by a law called the SHARE IT Act. It happened fully above board, which is honestly more of a feat!, Given told 404 Media. This has been in the works since last year.Initial analyses of the code suggest that it is very good and will be useful to people developing software in this field. In a report published last year, the IRS suggested that open sourcing Direct File would have numerous benefits: First, it would enable public scrutiny of that code and invite independent groups to assess its accuracy and report potential issues. Second, other tax administrators, both in states and internationally, could build upon and contribute to the IRSs work, improving the robustness of the software over time and providing additional public value, it wrote. Finally, the IRSs work could serve as a reference for implementation of the Internal Revenue Code as computer code, enabling businesses and others to incorporate the IRSs code into their own software and increasing the vibrancy of the tax ecosystem.Given told 404 Media that Direct File relies in part on internal IRS systems (like the ability to pull W-2 data directly from the IRS, and internal IRS authentication systems), so it cannot be run off-the-shelf using only the code that was released. Being from the IRS, Direct File doesnt file state tax returns, and relies on integrations with tools provided by state revenue agencies to facilitate that task, and unnecessary complication if youre rolling your own filing tool and you arent the IRS, he said.Vinton said that the Direct File team worked for a long time knowing that there were people within government and external companies who did not want the IRS to create Direct File. We had to really focus and not get distracted by all of the noise, wherever the noise was coming from. The way you get through it is you keep your head down and not get distracted by focusing on our users. That is how we found our way through this, she said. We always assumed there would be people gunning for it, but we also knew it was something people wanted. We knew it was an idea whose time had come. The noise now is, well, its a situation that has been brewing for a while.Even though Direct File is not runnable off the shelf, the codebase itself is still incredibly valuable and can help developers guide the next generation of tax filing software.I think theres also a lot of value, Given said. Each of the more than 700 screens of Direct File was vetted by the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. It asks questions no other tool asks, and provides an authoritative, plain language interpretation of a significant swath of the Internal Revenue Code.Vinton told 404 Media in a phone call that the open sourcing of Direct File is just good government. All code paid for by taxpayer dollars should be open source, available for comment, for feedback, for people to build on and for people in other agencies to replicate. It saves everyone money and it is our [taxpayers] IP, she said. This is just good government and should absolutely be the standard that government technologists are held to.Given said that at the Economic Security Project, he and his colleagues will first start by documenting how Direct File was made and what it does, and they will hopefully work with outside groups to come up with new ways to make tax filing easier. They will suggest some opportunities to continue to advance access to filing and tax benefits, both short-term things that can be done by states and/or nonprofits and longer-term policy ideas, he said. I know theres a lot of interest in how to keep Direct Files lights on, even without the IRS, but I think the loss of that key player necessitates a more imaginative approach than just keeping on keeping on.The group is also considering using its experience creating Direct Filewhich involved parsing the incredibly complex tax codeto think up new ways to explain how the tax code works and to consider how that process could be applied to other complicated government programs.Ive had conversations about the potential of the Direct File Fact Graph as civic infrastructure. When you break it down, taxes are just the gnarliest and most complex form in all of government, and a solution that demonstrably scales to that challenge could also have many other uses (think applying for benefit programs), he said. I think there could be interest in continuing that work to make not only a future Direct File easier to build, but to enable more Direct File-like services in the future. But theres the perennial question of whether its worth focusing on the technology when its generally the people/political problems that are the bigger blockers to delivering great government services.Vinton said that she hopes the learnings of Direct File can eventually be applied to other government processes, and that its an example of government working very well.We had highly empowered, autonomous teams doing this work, she said. I think that should be a model for how government agencies should work. Thats what I want to do is start thinking through different lessons, leadership lessons, executive level lessons for how government institutions can learn from Direct File. Theres a lack of trust in government thats been around for a while. DirectFile increased trust in the IRS by 86 percent among people who used it. You go in, you complete your experience and transaction and people will not just come back but it will increase their trust. It helps our institutions and our democracy.
