They said theyd shoot us: Nigerian child recalls how he was taken in mass school abduction
Onyeka Chieme, a student of St. Mary's Catholic School, abducted by gunmen and later released, poses for a photograph at his house in Papiri, Nigeria, Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Afolabi Sotunde)2025-12-11T14:45:31Z PAPIRI, Nigeria (AP) The children at St. Mary Catholic School in Nigerias Papiri community were jolted from their sleep with a loud crash at the school gate. Half asleep and confused, they dashed out of their dorms, some landing in the hands of gunmen.Onyeka Chieme, an elementary school student, waited with bated breath as the loud thuds got nearer. Upon seeing men armed with guns, he recalled jumping through the window with some friends. The gunmen gave chase on motorbikes, shooting into the air and startling him and the others to a halt. They said if we ran, they would shoot us, Chieme told The Associated Press during a visit to his family in Papiri in the north-central Niger State. They watched in horror as the gunmen set fire to a statue of Mary and a Nigerian flag before carting the children away on motorbikes and in buses. Chieme is one of the 303 schoolchildren many of them between 10 and 17 years old and 12 teachers abducted from the school on Nov. 21 in one of the countrys biggest mass school abductions. The attack came days after 25 students were abducted in similar circumstances in the neighboring Kebbi state. Fifty of the Niger State students escaped in the hours that followed the attack and more than two weeks after, Chieme was freed on Sunday together with 99 others. However, 153 are still held with the teachers, among them Chiemes brother. The Nigerian government did not say how they were released or whether any suspect has been arrested. Arrests are rare and ransom payments common in such cases, and authorities have provided vague information about rescue efforts. On the first night we got there, I thought they were going to kill us, Chieme said from his home as his parents watched. But their leader said we should not fear, it is just money that they wanted. If they paid the money, they would release everyone to go home. Separated and some were blindfoldedChieme described harrowing experiences during the more than two weeks in the bush, where the abducted students and staff were forced to sleep in the open. They were separated, he said, with the older ones blindfolded and their hands tied.Every day, they woke up on the stubby grass with food and water from a nearby river. Those who did not keep quiet were often beaten, and guns were never out of sight, he said.Occasionally, aircraft would fly above them, and the gunmen would instruct them to hide beneath trees to avoid being discovered. They dont want the airplanes to see us, Chieme said, referring to Nigerian military jets that officials said were searching forests for the children. Analysts say the gangs use captives as shields to avoid being bombarded.Nigeria fights multiple armed groups operating across the country. They include deadly religious sects, including Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province, as well as amorphous groups popularly called bandits who ride en masse on motorbikes to attack communities and kidnap people for ransom. After attacks, communities and families pay ransoms to the bandits, sometimes millions of naira (thousands of dollars). No group has claimed responsibility for the Papiri abduction. On the day of their release, Chieme said the students were asked to form a queue. Some of them, terrified that it meant a punishment, ran to the back of the line. The gunmen counted the first 100 students, took them out of the bush, before transferring them onto military buses. The other 153 and the teachers were left behind, including his brother, he said. Their fates are not known.AP could not independently verify his account.Families are increasingly worried about their childrens safetySchool abductions have defined the security crises in Nigeria, where armed groups have targeted schools to attract more ransom and attention.Nearly 1,800 schoolchildren have been abducted in almost a dozen school attacks since 2014, when Boko Haram extremists made global headlines after kidnapping 276 girls from their school in the northeastern Chibok village.Analysts say the Nigerian government negotiates with armed groups and pays ransom for the release of the children to temper outrage. Officials have not admitted to ransom payments. When you do that (pay ransoms), it encourages the abductions to continue, Aisha Yesufu, an activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls movement. The group is still seeking the release of nearly 100 Chibok girls held since the 2014 attack. The abductions have added another layer of worry to Nigerias underfunded education sector. The country has the worlds highest out-of-school children population. One in every five out-of-school children is in Nigeria, according to UNICEF.In Papiri and other parts of Nigeria affected by insecurity, families are becoming reluctant to send their children to school. Mixed feelings of joy and anguishChiemes return has left his family with mixed feelings. The parents are happy he is back, but continue to worry about his brother still in the bush.If he dies, I dont think I can survive it, said Anthony Chieme, his father. It is better my child dies in my room where I see his corpse and his grave than die in the hands of bandits in the bush where you see nothing.Precious Njikonye, another parent, said she often visited the school since last months attack, hoping to see her son one day. This week, her hope materialized when he was among the 100 freed on Sunday and they were reunited.Everyone who has a child ... knows how painful it is to not be able to account for where the child is, she said, overwhelmed with relief. I never thought I would see him again.-Adetayo reported from Lagos, Nigeria. OPE ADETAYO Adetayo is a West Africa reporter for The Associated Press. Porn Is Being Injected Into Government Websites Via Malicious PDFs
Dozens of government and university websites belonging to cities, towns, and public agencies across the country are hosting PDFs promoting AI porn apps, porn sites, and cryptocurrency scams; dozens more have been hit with a website redirection attacks which lead to animal vagina sex toy ecommerce pages, penis enlargement treatments, automatically-downloading Windows program files, and porn.Sex xxx video sexy Xvideo bf porn XXX xnxx Sex XXX porn XXX blue film Sex Video xxx sex videos Porn Hub XVideos XXX sexy bf videos blue film Videos Oficial on Instagram New Viral Video The latest original video has taken the internet by storm and left viewers in on various social media platforms ex Videos Hot Sex Video Hot Porn viral video, reads the beginning of a three-page PDF uploaded to the website of the Irvington, New Jersey city governments website. The PDF, called XnXX Video teachers fucking students Video porn Videos free XXX Hamster XnXX com is unlike many of the other PDFs hosted on the citys website, which include things like 2025-10-14 Council Minutes, Proposed Agenda 9-22-25, and Landlord Registration Form (1 & 2 unit dwelling). It is similar, however, to another PDF called 30 Best question heres, which looks like this:Irvington, which is just west of Newark and has a population of 61,000 people, has fallen victim to an SEO spam attack that has afflicted local and state governments and universities around the United States.Researcher Brian Penny has identified dozens of government and university websites that hosted PDF guides for how to make AI porn, PDFs linking to porn videos, bizarre crypto spam, sex toys, and more. Reginfo.gov, a regulatory affairs compliance website under the federal governments General Services Administration, is currently hosting a 12 page PDF called Nudify AI Free, No Sign-Up Needed!, which is an ad and link to an abusive AI app designed to remove a persons clothes. The Kansas Attorney Generals office and the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District Office in California hosted PDFs called DeepNude AI Best Deepnude AI APP 2025. Penny found similar PDFs on the websites for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Washington Fire Commissioners Association, the Florida Department of Agriculture, the cities of Jackson, Mississippi and Massillon, Ohio, various universities throughout the country, and dozens of others. Penny has caught the attention of local news throughout the United States, who have reported on the problem. The issue appears to be stemming from websites that allow people to upload their own PDFs, which then sit on these government websites. Because they are loaded with keywords for widely searched terms and exist on government and university sites with high search authority, Google and other search engines begin to surface them. In the last week or so, many (but not all) of the PDFs Penny has discovered have been deleted by local governments and universities. But cities seem like they are having more trouble cleaning up another attack, which is redirecting traffic from government URLs to porn, e-commerce, and spam sites. In an attack that seems similar to what we reported in June, various government websites are somehow being used to maliciously send traffic elsewhere. For example, the New York State Museums online exhibit for something called The Family Room now has at least 11 links to different types of realistic animal vagina pocket masturbators, which include Zebra Animal Vagina Pussy Male Masturbation Cup Pocket Realistic Silicone Penis Sex Toy ($27.99), and Must-have Horse Pussy Torso Buttocks Male Masturbator Fantasy Realistic Animal Pussie Sex Doll.Links Penny found on Knoxville, Tennessees site for permitting inspections first go to a page that looks like a government site for hosting files then redirects to a page selling penis growth supplements that features erect penises (human penises, mercifully), blowjobs, men masturbating, and Dr. Ozs face.Another Knoxville link I found, which purports to be a pirated version of the 2002 Vin Diesel film XXX simply downloaded a .exe file to my computer.Penny believes that what he has found is basically the tip of the iceberg, because he is largely finding these by typing things like nudify site:.gov xxx site:.gov into Google and clicking around. Sometimes, malicious pages surface only on image searches or video searches: Basically the craziest things you can think of will show up as long as youre on image search, Penny told 404 Media. Ill be doing this all week. The Nevada Department of Transportation told 404 Media that This incident was not related to NDOT infrastructure or information systems, and the material was not hosted on NDOT servers. This unfortunate incident was a result of malicious use of a legitimate form created using the third-party platform on which NDOTs website is hosted. NDOT expeditiously worked with our web hosting vendor to ensure the inappropriate content was removed. It added that the third-party is Granicus, a massive government services company that provides website backend infrastructure for many cities and states around the country, as well as helps them stream and archive city council meetings, among other services. Several of the affected local governments use Granicus, but not all of them do; Granicus did not respond to two requests for comment from 404 Media. The California Secretary of States Office told 404 Media: A bad actor uploaded non-business documents to the bizfile Online system (a portal for business filings and information). The files were then used in external links allowing public access to only those uploaded files. No data was compromised. SOS staff took immediate action to remove the ability to use the system for non-SOS business purposes and are removing the unauthorized files from the system. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said WDFW is aware of this issue and is actively working with our partners at WaTech to address it. The other government agencies mentioned in this article did not respond to our requests for comment.

A big queer Texas wedding party celebrates LGBTQ+ marriage while its under threat
This article was published in partnership withThe Barbed Wire. Courtesy of The 19th. At a bustling venue on Sunday, the speakers boomed with a remix of Stayin Alive.Heather Schenk and Ty Linhardt had traveled from Chickasha, Oklahoma, for the Big Queer Wedding Party in Austin, where ten couples came to get married and renew their vows in the sanctuary of a former Baptist church.Guests stepped carefully around the flowing train of Schenks white gown on their way to the bar. The dresss low-cut back framed her tattoos and long blonde braids. She was overjoyed to finally be wearing it.Schenk and Linhardts original wedding plans went awry when Linhardt fell down a flight of stairs the night before their 2024 destination wedding in St. Croix. She spent the next 10 days in the hospital and, since they hadnt yet exchanged vows, Schenk wasnt guaranteed the right to visit.By the time they were able to get married, their whole wedding party and even Schenks dress had been sent home. They got married anyway, even if it wasnt how they had imagined it. We had people that we met on the island just meet us on the beach, and our officiant got COVID the night before, Schenk said.In Austin on Sunday afternoon, the chilly winter weather seemed far from the warm sandy beaches where theyd first wed. Yet the pair seemed relieved to be surrounded by the happy chaos, lace, sequins, and rainbow glitter. After they renewed their vows, Schenk shared a message of perseverance for others in the LGBTQ+ community.Keep showing up, she said, use your voice and love who you love.Ty Linhardt (left) and Heather Schenk from Chickasa, Oklahoma, pose for portraits before renewing their vows at the Big Queer Wedding Party at The Cathedral ATX on December 7 in Austin.(Salgu Wissmath for The 19th)The queer community has held a collective breath, waiting to see which rights will be stripped away next. In October, the right to wed was chipped away in Texas thanks to a rule change, approved by the Texas Supreme Court, which now allows judges to decline performing marriages based on their religious beliefs. Then, about a month ago, the U.S. Supreme Court weighed if it would take up an appeal by Kim Davis, the former Kentucky county clerk and opponent of LGBTQ+ rights, to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 decision that set a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.Thats when Noah Day, an Austin resident, approached Becky Bullard, the creator of the progressive political event planning company Democrasexy. Day has two kids from a former marriage and only has legal custody of them thanks to the same marriage rights they feared others might soon lose.Christa Osborn (left) and Dean Osborn walk down the aisle after getting married at the Big Queer Wedding Party.(Salgu Wissmath for The 19th)We need to show up for each other and protect each other and send each other love, because we all belong, and I want all of us here, and I will not be quiet about that, Day said. The two teamed up with Denise Hernndez, a queer Latina judge who oversees Travis County Court #6, to plan what would be a protest if the right to same-sex marriage was under threat. On November 10, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to revisit the landmark decision though judges may still decline to perform same-sex marriages in Texas.Schenk and Linhard discovered the event thanks to an Instagram reel posted by Hernndez. With marriage equality secure, at least for now, The Big Queer Wedding Party at the Cathedral, East Austins church-turned-art gallery, was an act of joyous defiance to show that LGBTQ+ Texans are still here and still loving each other. The happy couples along with their friends, family and many curious community members poured into the Cathedral under a heart-shaped balloon arch to fill the former church with celebration. The entire event was free, with food and drinks donated by local companies and luscious wedding cakes from Sugar Mamas Bakeshop.District 3 City Council Member Jos Miguel Anwar Velsquez stopped by to share that the city of Austin had formally declared December 7 to be Big Queer Wedding Party Day.The Bible tells us that love is patient and love is kind, and it doesnt envy, it doesnt boast, it is slow to anger, its not proud yada yada yada, right? Velsquez told the crowd in plush green velvet chairs. Im reading this to remind the people that abuse those words, that abuse the words of love the words of togetherness, that love is the only motherfucking way.The event attracted couples from all across the state to make or renew their vows to each other under the guidance of Hernndez. In all, eight couples got married, and two renewed their vows along with live music, DJ sets, drag performers, and free snacks and libations.During the four years shes been in office, Hernndez believes shes officiated more than 100 weddings, including group weddings held every Pride month. She said she began hearing from LGBTQ+ couples in Texas within days of the approval of the rule change by the states highest court.Theres just so much fear and shame that comes from going to a courthouse in hopes to celebrate your marriage and then being turned away just for being who you are. And I think that thats a huge fair access issue for our court system, Hernndez said by phone before the party.Organizers, judges, and guests crowd in for a selfie during the Big Queer Wedding Party. The event filled the former Baptist church with music, drag, donated food, and celebration. (Salgu Wissmath for The 19th)Hernndez admitted that even with her deep legal knowledge of the constitutional rights around marriage and marriage equality, shed been afraid for the future of this important human right while waiting to hear if the U.S. Supreme Court would reconsider it. You could feel the stress, the fear, the overwhelm in our communities.According to Brian Klosterboer, a staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court at least appears reluctant to undo the legal precedent it set with the 2015 Obergefell decision. Doing so would potentially upset a decade of legally binding marriages and related adoptions, inheritances, and other ramifications from the decision. In addition, same sex marriage remains popular in the United States. However, Klosterboer was troubled by the states ruling enabling Texas judges to refuse to perform certain marriages. Allowing them to openly express discriminatory beliefs does set a dangerous precedent, and hopefully the vast majority of our judges remain neutral and impartial to everyone who comes into their courtroom or seeks their public services.Standing under a trellis decorated with delicate bouquets of autumnal flowers, Judge Hernndez called each couple forward for their turn. One newlywed couple from Austin and San Antonio, Nicollette Lemkuhl and Olivia Acosta, brought along Lemkuhls 4-year-old son, Niam, who wore a dark suit matching Acostas, and clung to her throughout the ceremony. While Lemkuhl expressed frustration that were still fighting for marriage equality, she said, that we can do this in a church setting, without fear, were very proud to be here.Speaking to the crowd, Bullard invoked the memory of the late U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan, the first Black woman elected to the Texas Senate since reconstruction. Jordan lived with her partner, Nancy Earl, for 20 years before she died in 1996, almost two decades before marriage equality.I like to think that Barbara, her partner, and all those other partners who were never able to be accepted by the system are here with us in spirit tonight, and I just want to acknowledge them, she said. Its really important to celebrate wins when we get them, but they dont mean that we can stop, unfortunately, Bullard said.To cheers, her co-organizer Day declared: Love is an act of resistance, and our community is so brave and resilient.Olivia Acosta holds 4-year-old Niam Lemkuhl after marrying Nicollette Lemkuhl at the Big Queer Wedding Party. (Salgu Wissmath for The 19th)Although you shouldnt have to be brave or resilient to be yourself, we are and we will always continue to hold each other up, they continued.Ximena Arevalo and Nicole Kohn drove in from Houston. They had decided to get married after an October trip to Austin for a Rene Rapp concert, and the pair discovered the event by googling LGBTQ+ friendly judges. When Hernndez wed the pair, in one of the days most charming moments, she declared the two to be wife and lad.Marriage is between two people, the lad, Arevalo, said. It doesnt matter who they are, what it is, what you identify as, as long as youre happy with your person.Judge Selena Alvarenga from the 460th District Criminal Court, the first openly LGBTQ+ judge elected in Travis County, and Judge Laurie Eiserloh from the 455th Civil District Court, joined Hernndez for the final weddings.Eiserloh recounted how, before Obergefell, she and her wife of 36 years depended on another Travis County judge to approve her adoption of her own children. It was a strange moment, but thats what had to happen before marriage equality, she recalled.Jenna Sullivan (left) kisses Camila Montoya after the couple got married. (Salgu Wissmath for The 19th)It is a deep honor to get to serve alongside these phenomenal women, Hernndez said. They lead in a guiding community, but as a young judge, I get to feel very inspired to work with them and to lead and guide alongside them, and to stand so true in our identities together. Each of the judges took a turn in leading the ceremony for the two couples, with Eiserloh declaring, What we create here together is a reminder that love not only collides between two people, but expands outward to strengthen our communities. As she finished one set of weddings, Hernndez reminded the crowd of the importance of being present when our community is under attack. I want to take a moment just to acknowledge that if you are queer or you are an ally, your presence here is so important today, as we are navigating the state of Texas, as were navigating safety in our communities, by showing up, you bring power to all of us.The post A big queer Texas wedding party celebrates LGBTQ+ marriage while its under threat appeared first on News Is Out.

Hate preacher demands Christians start calling gay men fa***ts
Anti-LGBTQ+ hate pastor Joel Webbon has a message for Christians: Use more slurs when talking about gay men.Webbon, who founded Right Response Ministries and is the senior pastor of the Covenant Bible Church in Austin, Texas, has a history of extreme statements, including a claim that 17% of gay men eat feces, that women shouldnt have the right to vote, and that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is in hell. Related Christian pastor explains why he uses so many slurs Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Homosexuality is degenerate, Webbon said this week in an episode of his podcast,in a video captured by Right Wing Watch. It is bad for the populace. Its bad for society. Its been incredibly harmful.Weve seen a full court press against our own children as the sacrificial lamb in order to appease older gay men and make them feel better about themselves. Its wicked. Its predatory, he continued, drawing on the old, false negative stereotype that LGBTQ+ people are a threat to children. And I think it is appropriate for us to be able to call it what it is and say, Wait a second, this is perverse, its wicked, its fa***try, and it needs to stop.'Yes, you can use that word on occasion, as I just did, to say, No, were not going to tolerate fa***try with our children. Cut it out. Stop it. Say Christ is Lord. Stop it.' He specified that he didnt want people to use that word so much that it gets trivialized, but I dont think that its a sin to say fa***t in its proper context. I think you can be a Christian who fears the Lord and say, Enough is enough.' Webbon then brought up a social media video from four years ago from the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus where they joked that they are going to convert your children to being tolerant and fair towards people who are different from them, something that conservatives at the time falsely said was a form of pedophilia.Youve got the San Francisco Gay Choir a couple years ago writing songsand it was not a jokeWell convert your children,' Webbon said. No, stop it, fa***ts. No, you will not convert my children. Youre degenerates, youre predators, and youre evil. In the name of Jesus Christ, stop it. Back into the shadows.Webbon went on to say that he believes that society only has room for LGBTQ+ people or Christians; the idea that Christians can live in peace with people who are different from them is apparently unimaginable.Every society will have a closet and there will either be Christian children hiding in that closet with their parents, ostracized from society, or you will have sexual degenerates in that closet, he said. And so yes, call me a radical [but] I think the sexual degenerates are the ones, the members of society, that should be in the closet, not Christian families and their children. The Covenant Bible Church prominently displays a message on its website that it opposes the WOKE NONSENSE of the culture and CIVIL TYRANNY of the state.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Judge orders Kilmar Abrego Garcia to be immediately released from immigration detention
Kilmar Abrego Garcia joins supporters in a protest rally outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Baltimore, Aug. 25, 2025. (AP Photo/Stephanie Scarbrough, File)2025-12-11T15:42:55Z GREENBELT, Md. (AP) A federal judge in Maryland ordered Kilmar Abrego Garcia freed from immigration detention on Thursday while his legal challenge against his deportation moves forward. U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis ruled that Immigration and Customs Enforcement must release Abrego Garcia from custody immediately. Since Abrego Garcias return from wrongful detention in El Salvador, he has been re-detained, again without lawful authority, the judge wrote. For this reason, the Court will GRANT Abrego Garcias Petition for immediate release from ICE custody. The Department of Homeland Security was highly critical of the judges order and vowed to oppose it, calling it naked judicial activism by a judge appointed by President Barack Obama, a Democrat. This order lacks any valid legal basis, and we will continue to fight this tooth and nail in the courts, said Tricia McLaughlin, the departments assistant secretary. Messages seeking comment were left with Abrego Garcias attorney Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg.Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, has an American wife and child and has lived in Maryland for years, but he originally immigrated to the U.S. illegally as a teenager. An immigration judge in 2019 ruled Abrego Garcia could not be deported to El Salvador because he faced danger from a gang that targeted his family. When Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported there in March, his case became a rallying point for those who oppose President Donald Trumps immigration crackdown. Abrego Garcia was returned to the U.S. under a court order. Since he cannot be deported to El Salvador, ICE has been seeking to deport him to a series of African countries. His lawsuit in federal court claims Trumps Republican administration is illegally using the deportation process to punish Abrego Garcia over the embarrassment of his mistaken deportation to El Salvador. Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel. Follow on Meanwhile, in a separate action in immigration court, Abrego Garcia is petitioning to reopen his immigration case to seek asylum in the United States. Additionally, Abrego Garcia is facing criminal charges in federal court in Tennessee, where he has pleaded not guilty to human smuggling. He has filed a motion to dismiss the charges, claiming the prosecution is vindictive. A judge has ordered an evidentiary hearing to be held on the motion after previously finding some evidence that the prosecution against Abrego Garcia may be vindictive. The judge said many statements by Trump administration officials raise cause for concern. The judge specifically cited a statement by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche that seemed to suggest the Justice Department charged Abrego Garcia because he won his wrongful deportation case. MyPillow Guy and Trump supporter Mike Lindell says hes running for Minnesota governor in 2026
Mike Lindell walks into federal district court for a defamation trial, June 5, 2025, in Denver. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey, File)2025-12-11T16:02:45Z SHAKOPEE, Minn. (AP) Mike Lindell, the fervent supporter of President Donald Trump known to TV viewers as the MyPillow Guy, officially entered the race for Minnesota governor Thursday in hopes of winning the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Gov. Tim Walz.Ill leave no town unturned in Minnesota, Lindell told The Associated Press in an interview ahead of a news conference set for Thursday. He said he has a record of solving problems and personal experiences that will help businesses and fight addiction and homelessness as well as fraud in government programs. The fraud issue has particularly dogged Walz, who announced in September that hes seeking a third term in the 2026 election. A TV pitchman and election denierLindell, 64, founded his pillow company in Minnesota in 2009 and became its public face through infomercials that became ubiquitous on late-night television. But he and his company faced a string of legal and financial setbacks after he became a leading amplifier of Trumps false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. He said he has overcome them. Not only have I built businesses, you look at problem solution, Lindell said in his trademark rapid-fire style. I was able to make it through the biggest attack on a company, and a person, probably other than Donald Trump, in the history of our media ... lawfare and everything. While no Republican has won statewide office in Minnesota since 2006, the states voters have a history of making unconventional choices. They shocked the world by electing former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura as governor in 1998. And they picked a veteran TV pitchman in 1978 when they elected home improvement company owner Rudy Boschwitz as a U.S. senator. Lindell has frequently talked about how he overcame a crack cocaine addiction with a religious conversion in 2009 as MyPillow was getting going. His life took another turn in 2016 when he met the future president during Trumps first campaign. He served as a warm-up speaker at dozens of Trump rallies and co-chaired Trumps campaign in Minnesota. Trumps endorsement could be the key to which of several candidates wins the GOP nomination to challenge Walz. But Lindell said he doesnt know what Trump will do, even though theyre friends, and said his campaign isnt contingent on the presidents support. His Lindell TV streaming platform was in the news in November when it became one of several conservative news outlets that became credentialed to cover the Pentagon after agreeing to a restrictive new press policy rejected by virtually all legacy media organizations. Lindell has weathered a series of stormsLindells outspoken support for Trumps false claims that the 2020 election was stolen triggered a backlash as major retailers discontinued MyPillow products. By his own admission, revenue slumped and lines of credit dried up, costing him millions. Several vendors sued MyPillow over billing disputes. Fox News stopped running his commercials. Lawyers quit on him.Lindell has been sued twice for defamation over his claims that voting machines were manipulated to deprive Trump of a victory.A federal judge in Minnesota ruled in September that Lindell defamed Smartmatic with 51 false statements. But the judge deferred the question of whether Lindell acted with the actual malice that Smartmatic must prove to collect. Smartmatic says its seeking nine-figure damages.A Colorado jury in June found that Lindell defamed a former Dominion Voting Systems executive by calling him a traitor, and awarded $2.3 million in damages. But Lindell won a victory in July when a federal appeals court overturned a judges decision that affirmed a $5 million arbitration award to a software engineer who disputed data that Lindell claimed proved Chinese interference in the 2020 election. The engineer had accepted Lindells Prove Mike Wrong Challenge, which he launched as part of his 2021 Cyber Symposium in South Dakota, where he promised to expose election fraud. The campaign aheadLindell said his crusade against electronic voting machines will just be part of his platform. While Minnesota uses paper ballots, it also uses electronic tabulators to count them. Lindell wants them hand-counted, even though many election officials say machine counting is more accurate. Some Republicans in the race include Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, of Cold Spring; Dr. Scott Jensen, a former state senator from Chaska who was the partys 2022 candidate; state Rep. Kristin Robbins, of Maple Grove; defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor Chris Madel; and former executive Kendall Qualls. These guys havent lived what I live, Lindell said.Lindell wouldnt commit to abiding by the Minnesota GOP endorsement and forgoing the primary if he loses it, expressing confidence that hell win. He also said hell rely on his supporters to finance his campaign because his own finances are drained. I dont have the money, he acknowledged. But he added that ever since word got out last week that he had filed the paperwork to run, Ive had thousands upon thousands of people text and call, saying from all around the country ... Hey, Ill donate. STEVE KARNOWSKI Karnowski covers politics and government from Minnesota for The Associated Press. He also covers the ongoing fallout from the murder of George Floyd, courts and the environment, among other topics. twitter mailto

Venezuelan Nobel laureate credits Trump for pressuring Maduro with decisive actions
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado speaks during a press conference at the Grand Hotel in Oslo, Norway, Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025. (Heiko Junge/NTB Scanpix via AP)2025-12-11T10:40:25Z CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) Venezuelan opposition leader Mara Corina Machado said Thursday that decisive actions by the United States, including the seizure of an oil tanker, have left the repressive government of President Nicols Maduro at its weakest point, and she vowed to return to the country to keep fighting for democracy.Machados statements to reporters came hours after she appeared in public for the first time in 11 months, following her arrival in Norways capital, Oslo, where her daughter received the Nobel Peace Prize award on her behalf on Wednesday. The actions of President Donald Trump have been decisive to reach where we are now, where the regime is significantly weaker, she said. Because before, the regime thought it had impunity . Now they start to understand that this is serious, and that the world is watching. Machado sidestepped questions on whether a U.S. military intervention is necessary to remove Maduro from power. She told reporters that she would return to Venezuela when we believe the security conditions are right, and it wont depend on whether or not the regime leaves.Machado arrived in Oslo hours after Wednesdays prize ceremony and made her first public appearance early Thursday, emerging from a hotel balcony and waving to an emotional crowd of supporters. She had been in hiding since Jan. 9, when she was briefly detained after joining supporters during a protest in Caracas. Machado left Venezuela at a critical point in the countrys protracted crisis, with the Trump administration carrying out deadly military operations in the Caribbean and threatening repeatedly to strike Venezuelan soil. The White House has said the operations, which have killed 80 people, are meant to stop the flow of drugs into the U.S.But many, including analysts, U.S. members of Congress and Maduro himself, see the operations as an effort to end his hold on power. The opposition led by Machado has only added to this perception by reigniting its promise to soon govern the country. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said the U.S. had seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. On Thursday, Machado called on governments to expand their support for Venezuelas opposition beyond words. We, the Venezuelan people that have tried every single, you know, institutional mean, ask support from the democratic nations in the world to cut those resources that come from illegal activities and support repressive approaches, she said. And thats why we are certainly asking the world to act. Its not a matter of statements, as you say, its a matter of action. Machado, 58, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October after mounting the most serious peaceful challenge in years to Maduros authoritarian government. Her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, accepted the prize at a ceremony in Oslo. Machado was received Thursday by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stre, who said that his country is ready to support a democratic Venezuela in building new and sound institutions. Asked whether the Venezuelan government might have known her whereabouts since January, Machado told reporters: I dont think they have known where I have been, and certainly they would have done everything to stop me from coming here. She declined to give details of her journey from Venezuela to Norway. But she thanked all those men and women that risked their lives so that I could be here today and later acknowledged that the U.S. government helped her.Flight tracking data show that the plane Machado arrived on flew to Oslo from Bangor, Maine.Machado won an opposition primary election and intended to challenge Maduro in last years presidential election, but the government barred her from running for office. Retired diplomat Edmundo Gonzlez took her place. The lead-up to the election on July 28, 2024, saw widespread repression, including disqualifications, arrests and human rights violations. That increased after the countrys National Electoral Council, which is stacked with Maduro loyalists, declared the incumbent the winner. Gonzlez sought asylum in Spain last year after a Venezuelan court issued a warrant for his arrest. Its unclear when and how Machado and Gonzlez could return to Venezuela. An opposition plan to get Gonzlez back before the Jan. 10 ceremony that gave Maduro another term didnt materialize.Machado, alongside the Norwegian prime minister, said that we decided to fight until the end and Venezuela will be free. If Maduros government is still in place when she returns, she added, I will be with my people and they will not know where I am. We have ways to do that and take care of us.

Disney Invests $1 Billion in the AI Slopification of Its Brand
The first thing I saw this morning when I opened X was an AI-generated trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jrs Doctor Doom stood in a shapeless void alongside Captain America and Reed Richards. It was obvious slop but it was also close in tone and feel of the last five years of Disneys Marvel movies. As media empires consolidate, nostalgia intensifies, and AI tools spread, Disneys blockbusters feel more like an excuse to slam recognizable characters together in a contextless morass. So of course Disney has announced it signed a deal with OpenAI today that will soon allow fans to make their own officially licensed Disney slop using Sora 2. The house that mouse built, and which has been notoriously protective of its intellectual property, opened up the video generator, saw the videos featuring Nazi Spongebob and criminal Pikachu, and decided: We want in.According to a press release, the deal is a 3 year licensing agreement that will allow the AI companys short form video platform Sora to generate slop videos using characters like Mickey Mouse and Iron Man. As part of the agreement, Disney is investing $1 billion of equity into OpenAI, said it will become a major customer of the company, and promised that fan and corporate AI-generated content would soon come to Disney+, meaning that Disney will officially begin putting AI slop into its flagship streaming product. The deal extends to ChatGPT as well and, starting in early 2026, users will be able to crank out officially approved Disney slop on multiple platforms. When Sora 2 launched in October, it had little to no content moderation or copyright guidelines and videos of famous franchise characters doing horrible things flooded the platform. Pikachu stole diapers from a CVS, Rick and Morty pushed crypto currencies, and Disney characters shouted slurs in the aisles of Wal-Mart.It is worth mentioning that, although Disney has traditionally been extremely protective of its intellectual property, the companys princesses have become one of the most common fictional subjects of AI porn on the internet; 404 Media has found at least three different large subreddits dedicated to making AI porn of characters like Elsa, Snow White, Rapunzel, and Tinkerbell. In this case, Disney is fundamentally throwing its clout behind a technology that has thus far most commonly been used to make porn of its iconic characters. After the hype of the launch, OpenAI added an opt-in policy to Sora that was meant to prevent users from violating the rights of copyright holders. Its trivial to break this policy however, and circumvent the guardrails preventing a user from making a lewd Mickey Mouse cartoon or episode of The Simpsons. The original sin of Sora and other AI systems is that the training data is full of copyrighted material and the models cannot be retrained without great cost, if at all.If you cant beat the slop, become the slop. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works, Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, said in the press release about the agreement. The press release explained that Sora users will soon have official access to 200 characters in the Disney stable, including Loki, Thanos, Darth Vader, and Minnie Mouse. In exchange, Disney will begin to use OpenAIs APIs to build new products and it will deploy ChatGPT for its employees.Im imagining a future where AI-generated fan trailers of famous characters standing next to each other in banal liminal spaces is the norm. People have used Sora 2 to generate some truly horrifying videos, but the guardrails have become more aggressive. As Disney enters the picture, I imagine the platform will become even more anodyne. Persistent people will slip through and generate videos of Goofy and Iron Man sucking and fucking, sure, but the vast majority of whats coming will be safe corporate gruel that resembles a Marvel movie.

Intention, creativity, & hope: LGBTQ+ family-building trends to watch in 2026
As we look ahead to 2026, one thing feels clear: LGBTQ+ people are continuing to build families in record numbers, but were doing so with greater intention, higher expectations, and a growing insistence on equitable, affirming care. The landscape of fertility, surrogacy, adoption, and foster care is evolving rapidly, shaped by cultural shifts, policy changes, and the lived experiences of queer families across the country.Based on what were seeing at GWK Academy through our partners, prospective parents, mentors, and community here are six trends I believe will help define LGBTQ+ family building in the year ahead. Related These gay dads built families during the AIDS crisis. Their stories are blueprints for endurance. Growing demand for affirming providers across all paths to parenthood | Shutterstock Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today LGBTQ+ people have always had to navigate systems that werent built with us in mind, but 2026 will be the year more prospective parents push back and insist on working only with clinics, agencies, attorneys, and professionals who are truly affirming. This moment has been building for years. Families are no longer satisfied with we treat everyone the same. Instead, we should all insist on:Working with providers trained in LGBTQ+ cultural competenceBeing presented with clear, inclusive intake processesBeing supported by staff who understand the unique emotional and logistical realities of queer family buildingExperiencing transparent, affirming communication at every stepThis shift is why we are developing a Provider Affirming Certification specifically for the fertility industry. This new program created in collaboration with leading fertility experts and LGBTQ+ health advocates is designed to help IVF clinics and fertility-care teams deepen their understanding of queer family-building needs and deliver care that is affirming, informed, and culturally competent. In 2026, families will increasingly choose fertility providers who understand them not those who simply tolerate them. More ways for prospective parents to predict & control costs | ShutterstockFinancial unpredictability remains one of the biggest barriers LGBTQ+ people face when building their families. But in 2026, we expect a surge in tools, transparent pricing models, and bundled services aimed at helping families more fully understand the cost of their journey. Were already seeing:Clinics offering clearer breakdowns of IVF, donor, and surrogacy costsMore inclusive financing optionsEarly-stage planning tools for donor conceptionTransparent surrogacy agency fee structuresGrowing use of cost-comparison toolsThese innovations dont make family building inexpensive, but they empower LGBTQ+ families with information and control. That alone can change the trajectory of someones path to parenthood. Expanded mental health support tailored to LGBTQ+ family building | ShutterstockMental health support has long been an under-discussed part of LGBTQ+ family building. In 2026, that begins to change.Across every path to parenthood fertility, adoption, foster care, surrogacy queer people face unique emotional challenges that traditional support systems often overlook. Thats why were bringing together a group of LGBTQ+ mental health experts to develop new resources, guidance, and tools designed specifically for our community. These resources will address:Anxiety and uncertainty during long waitsGrief and loss when journeys take unexpected turnsNavigating non-affirming systems or providersThe emotional realities of donor conceptionIdentity-specific needs for trans and nonbinary parents-to-beI believe 2026 will mark a shift in which emotional preparedness becomes as essential as financial planning. More nuanced adoption education | ShutterstockOne of the clearest LGBTQ+ family-building trends heading into 2026 is a shift toward more thoughtful, identity-aware adoption education. Prospective parents are no longer satisfied with basic overviews of how adoption works. Instead, theyre engaging more deeply with the nuances that shape an adoptees experience and an adoptive parents responsibilities especially within LGBTQ+ families, where visibility, openness, and community often play unique roles.Families are asking more informed questions about openness with birth families, trauma-informed parenting practices, and the developmental needs of adopted children. Theyre also seeking clarity around the differences between private adoption and adoption from foster care, as well as how state-specific laws and timelines can shape an adoption journey. This move toward more intentional, grounded preparation reflects a growing commitment among LGBTQ+ parents to build families in ways that honor childrens identities, histories, and long-term well-being. Meaningful progress in trans & nonbinary family-building support | ShutterstockWhile trans and nonbinary people have built families for decades, the fertility and reproductive health systems have not always met them with affirming or informed care. That is finally starting to shift.More clinics, agencies, and support programs are:Updating intake systems to reflect all gender identitiesOffering more nuanced fertility-preservation pathwaysCreating protocols for gender-affirming care alongside fertility treatmentTraining staff on trans-specific reproductive needsWere committed to continuing this progress through our upcoming course modules and expert-led content designed specifically for trans and nonbinary parents-to-be. In 2026, we expect more providers to embrace these standards as the baseline. A rise in community-driven storytelling, education, & peer support | ShutterstockAs LGBTQ+ people continue to navigate fragmented systems, one of the most powerful forces shaping 2026 will be community itself.Families are increasingly turning to peer support, mentorship, and shared experiences to make informed choices and feel less alone on their journey. Through GWK Academy, we see firsthand the transformative power of:Mentorship programsProspective parent coachingPeer-to-peer guidanceStorytelling that reflects the full diversity of LGBTQ+ familiesThis collective knowledge is becoming a vital resource one that not only empowers families but reshapes the broader landscape of care. In 2026, we expect community-driven education to become one of the most influential tools LGBTQ+ people rely on as they build their families. The GWK Academy promise | ShutterstockIf 2025 taught us anything, its that LGBTQ+ people continue to build families with intention, creativity, and hope even when circumstances are challenging or uncertain. Our promise at GWK Academy is that as we move into 2026, well keep working toward a landscape where every LGBTQ+ person can access the support, information, and affirming care they deserve.VisitGWK Academytoday, and take your first step toward becoming a parent. Marjorie Taylor Greene says GOP leader promised a vote on her bill to put pro-trans doctors in jail
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said that she has struck a deal with House Republican leadership to get the chamber to vote on her bill that would ban transgender health care for trans youth nationwide and make getting such care harder for trans adults.Posting on X, Greene said that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) promised that her so-called Protect Childrens Innocence Act would come up for a vote if she voted for the NDAA, a large appropriations bill that funds the military. Several other far-right Republicans, like Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), voted against the NDAA because it didnt contain certain policy measures they wanted. Related Marjorie Taylor Greenes resignation shows that Trump & MAGA arent the same thing I made a deal and changed my NO vote on the rule to a Yes in exchange for a floor vote next week on my bill that is one of President Trumps key campaign promises and executive orders, Greene wrote. Leader Steve Scalise has promised me that my bill Protect Childrens Innocence Act, H.R. 3492, will be brought to the floor for a vote next Wednesday, Dec 17th.This would make it a class c felony to trans a child under 18, she continued. Every Republican campaigned to protect kids from the trans agenda. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The House passed the NDAA on Wednesday in a 312-112 vote. 18 Republicans and 94 Democrats voted against it. The Senate is expected to approve it soon.Greene has already announced her resignation from the House and has said her last day in Congress will be in early January, which may be why she was told the vote would happen this month. The LGBTQ+ organization HRC denounced her anti-trans legislation.Politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene and her enablers, who are breathlessly obsessed with using their power to terrorize transgender people, believe they know better than parents and doctors, said HRC President Kelley Robinson in a statement. Now, anti-equality members of the House may consider a bill to put doctors in prison just for doing their jobs. That could mean a pediatrician facing jail time for providing the care they were trained to provide. It could mean a parent being handcuffed and tossed into a police car because they went to the pharmacy and administered their childs medication as prescribed. Our leaders should be working out a solution to the impending crisis of soaring health care costs and ensuring every child has access to quality health care not dreaming up new ways to use the power of government to tear peoples lives apart. We will not rest until this bill is defeated.Earlier this week, Greene complained that the House leadership didnt take women seriously because no vote was scheduled for her bill, which does nothing to protect womens rights. The bill, which Greene has been trying to push through Congress for several years, would ban transgender youth from accessing gender-affirming care and make it harder for trans adults to get such care by banning government insurance programs from paying for it and banning medical schools from teaching about it. Despite Greenes characterization of the bill in various media appearances, gender-affirming care for minors almost never involves surgery and instead involves allowing younger kids to play with the toys they like and wear the clothes they like, as well as use the correct name andpronounsfor the child. For older teens, it involves reversible puberty blockers and hormone therapy, which have beenshown to reduce lifelong suicide riskfor transgender people and are supported by major medical associations in the U.S., including the American Medical Association, the Endocrine Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.Last year,Greene lied during testimonyin the House when she claimed that there are many young people that made the tragic mistakes of having mastectomies, having castrations done to them, having genital mutilation surgeries when they were still in their early, uh, teens, um, maybe even before they were teenagers. She alsocalleda trans-affirming mom evil and mentally ill while promoting the bill.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Study Finds 80% Of Americans Lack Social Connections To Pull Off Heist
NEW HAVEN, CTShedding new light on a previously undocumented effect of loneliness, a team of psychologists at Yale University found that at least 80% of Americans lack the social connections necessary to pull off a heist. When it comes to putting together a crew with the skills needed for a bank job or a jewel heist, a majority of Americans reported knowing just one or two guys, tops, said lead researcher Jane Iannitello, adding that only 20% had any safecrackers in their lives, a mere 16% knew any hacker prodigies with a rebellious streak, and fewer than 5% had access to Taiwanese acrobats doubling as masters of disguise. As they spend more and more time on social media, people just arent going out to underground boxing rings, art auctions, or other settings where they are likely to meet a fast-talking charismatic type who pulls them into a daring heist. They often lose touch with their demolition experts after childhood, and though people may be eager for a big money payday that could mean walking away from the life for good, they are too afraid to put themselves out there for fear of rejection. Even in cases where they have a crew big enough for a heist, lonely Americans are often left feeling stranded due to a lack of getaway drivers, which forces them to brandish firearms at total strangers and demand that they drive, just drive. While researchers cautioned the trend is likely to continue, they went on to state that some of the negative effects could be mitigated by reaching out to therapists with a plan, a keycard, and nothing to lose. The post Study Finds 80% Of Americans Lack Social Connections To Pull Off Heist appeared first on The Onion.

Architects of AI Wins Time Person of the Year, Sends Gambling Markets Into a Meltdown
The degenerate gamblers of Polymarket and Kalshi who bet that AI would win the Time Person of the Year are upset because the magazine has named the Architects of AI the person of the year. The people who make AI tools and AI infrastructure are, notably, not AI themselves, and thus both Kalshi and Polymarket have decided that people who bet AI do not win the bet. On Polymarket alone, people spent more than $6 million betting on AI gracing the cover of Time.As writer Parker Molloy pointed out, people who bet on AI are pissed. ITS THE ARCHITECTS OF AI THISNIS [sic] LITERALLY THE BET FUCK KALSHI, one Kalshi better said. This pretty clearly shouldve resolved to yes. If you bought AI, reach out to Kalshi support because AI is literally on the cover and in the title Architects of AI. Theyre not going to change anything unless they hear from people, said another.ThE aRcHiTeCtS oF AI fuck you pay me, said a third.Another misleading bet by Kalshi, said another gambler. Polymarket had fair rules and Kalshi did not. They need to fix this. But bag holders on Polymarket are also pissed. This is a scam. It should be resolved to a cancellation and a full refund to everyone, said a gambler whod put money down on Jensen Huang and lost. Notably, on Kalshi, anyone who bet on any of the Architects of AI, won the bet (meaning Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Dario Amodei, Mark Zuckerberg, Lisa Su, and Demis Hassabis), while anyone who bet their productsChatGPT and OpenAI did not win. On Polymarket, the rules were even more strict, i.e. people who bet Jensen Huang lost but people who bet Other won.FUCK YOU FUCKING FUCK Shayne Coplan [CEO of Polymarket], said someone who lost about $50 betting on AI to make the cover.Polymarket made its reasoning clear in a note of additional context on the market. This market is about the person/thing named as TIME's Person of the Year for 2025, not what is depicted on the cover. Per the rules, If the Person of the Year is Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, this would qualify to resolve this market to Trump. However if the Person of the Year is The MAGA movement, this would not qualify to resolve this market to Trump regardless of whether Trump is depicted on the cover, it said.Accordingly, a Time cover which lists Architects of AI as the person of the year will not qualify for AI even if the letters AI are depicted on the cover, as AI itself is not specifically named. It should be noted how incredibly stupid all of this is, which is perhaps appropriate for the year 2025, in which most of the economy consists of reckless gambling on AI. People spent more than $55 million betting on the Time Person of the Year on Polymarket, and more than $19 million betting on the Time Person of the Year on Kalshi. It also presents one of the many downsides of spending money to bet on random things that happen in the world. One of the most common and dumbest things that people continue to do to this day despite much urging otherwise is anthropomorphize AI, which is distinctly not a person and is not sentient. Time almost always actually picks a person for its Person of the Year cover, but it does sometimes get conceptual with it, at times selecting groups of people (The Silence Breakers of the #MeToo movement, the Whistleblowers, the Good Samaritans, You, and the Ebola Fighters, for example). In 1982 it selected The Computer as its Machine of the Year, and in 1988 it selected The Endangered Earth as Planet of the Year.Polymarkets users have been upset several times over the resolution of bets in the past few weeks and their concerns highlight how easy it is to manipulate the system. In November, an unauthorized edit of a live map of the Ukraine War allowed gamblers to cash in on a battle that hadnt happened. Earlier this month, a trader made $1 million in 24 hours betting on the results of Googles 2025 Year In Search Rankings and other users accused him of having inside knowledge of the process. Over the summer, Polymarket fought a war over whether or not President Zelenskyy had worn a suit. Surely all of this will continue to go well and be totally normal moving forward, especially as these prediction markets begin to integrate themselves with places such as CNN.

Pronoun respect for trans youth can reduce suicide risk by over 30%, study finds
For transgender and nonbinary young people (aged 18-24), having the majority of people in their lives respect their pronouns could drastically reduce the likelihood of them attempting suicide, a new study from The Trevor Project finds. This is particularly relevant as many trans and nonbinary (TGNB) people will be spending the holidays with family members who might not be supportive. These findings underscore a pressing need to increase pronoun respect for TGNB young people, as it represents a core expression of affirmation, dignity, and recognition of their humanity, the authors of the report say. We found that less than half of TGNB young people reported that they experienced pronoun respect from a lot or most/all of the people in their lives. Related The Trevor Project saved my life. Now its losing millions in federal funding thanks to Trump. The study found that TGNB people who felt their pronouns were respected were 31% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the previous 12 months. For those who had their pronouns respected, only 11% reported an attempt, compared to 17% of those who were not respected. At the extreme ends, of those who said that None of the people I know respected their pronouns, 23% had attempted suicide in the last year. At the other end of the spectrum, only 10% of those who responded All or most of the people I know said they had made an attempt. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Those numbers are particularly shocking given that only 46% of the TGNB young people surveyed reported that their pronouns were respected by a lot, most, or all of the people in their lives. While highlighting the impact of respecting pronouns, the study also gave insight into which pronouns people use and how that might help to address barriers to pronouns being respected. Of those surveyed, only 32% used purely binary pronouns (he/him or she/her). A combination of binary and non-binary pronouns was used by 32% (such as she/they, or they/him), and 15% used the nonbinary pronoun they/them.Crucially, that means that 27% of respondents reported using neopronouns (such as variations on xi/xe, zi/ze, or it/its) or used any/all pronouns, which many people are likely to be less familiar with and might have a harder time respecting without first overcoming some internal biases. The report digs into this, noting the need for additional research to understand these barriers to pronoun respect. In the meantime, they suggest building broader awareness and appreciation of diverse pronoun identities and following the lead of young people when they share their pronoun, and promoting inclusive practices across settings. Its not about knowing every pronoun that exists and memorizing them and getting it right 100 percent of the time, Steven Hobaica, the lead research scientist for the report, told The Advocate. Its about effort, and just attempting to be respectful and kind to people. Just doing your best to meet youth where theyre at, and listening to them and doing your best to respect them.Theres this idea that people think that youth cant know themselves, and thats just not true, Hobaica says. All data that we have on this topic, as well as our own lived experiences with identity, where many of us have very firm understandings of our identity at very young ages. These things dont just change overnight. Youth dont come to parents to talk about their gender the first time that they have a thought. This new report from The Trevor Project builds on previous studies that have shown how support can help to reduce the risk of suicide in trans and nonbinary people. That ranges from the understanding that gender-affirming care is life-saving care to the idea that accepting adults in a trans persons life can reduce the likelihood of a suicide attempt. However, this new study highlights the impact of individual facets of that affirmation, and it is not clear to what degree pronoun respect and broader gender affirmation from others actually overlap.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

The surprising reason Trump is so disturbed by people questioning his health
Many have voiced alarm over a long, rambling post by Donald Trump on Truth Social in which he admitted to taking multiple cognitive tests while surrounded by doctors and also called it treasonous to question his health. Many agree that the presidents vehement and repeated denials of his failing health are an admission that he is unwell. One columnist drew a stark parallel between Trumps behavior and that of his former mentor, the late gay lawyer Roy Cohn, who denied he was suffering from AIDS up until he died from the disease in 1986. Related Trump says Democrats want to turn every member of your family transgender Cohn who LGBTQ Nation writer John Gallagher once called the most evil gay man in U.S. history is known for aiding Joseph McCarthy in the governments purge of suspected communist and LGBTQ+ employees (he never spoke publicly about his own sexuality). He began representing Trump in the 1970s and ultimately became something of a father figure to him.In an op-ed for the Daily Beast, writer John Casey points out the disturbing parallels between Cohns stark refusals to acknowledge his failing health and the presidents behavior today. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today One of Cohns deepest teachings wasnt about politics, Casey writes. It was about the body. It was abouthiding vulnerabilityat any cost.He explains Cohns refusal to admit he had AIDS even threatening to sue his doctor if he spoke the word and how he used makeup to cover up his sores and gray appearance. It may sound familiar to those who have been following Trumps own use of makeup to hide sores on his hands this past year.Cohn ultimately claimed on 60 Minutes that he had liver cancer, which Casey called a desperate attempt to maintain the illusion of control.Casey says Cohns strategy was all about power rather than about privacy. In his worldview, illness meant weakness, and weakness meant forfeiting control. You didnt admit it. You didnt hint at it. And you certainly didnt let journalists see it.This, Casey explains, is why Trump doesnt just claim he is okay; he hyperbolizes everything, insisting he is one of the healthiest people ever. Trumps recent post, for example, declared, I go out of my way to do long, thorough, and very boring Medical Examinations at the Great Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, seen and supervised by top doctors, all of whom have given me PERFECT Marks Some have even said they have never seen such Strong Results.Casey explains, The point isnt medical accuracy. The point is that only a traitor would question the invincibility ofKing Donald Trump, a 79-year-old elderly man whose perfect days are long behind him.In his rambling Truth Social post, Trump calls out the New York Times as seditious, perhaps even treasonous for questioning his health. Casey calls it striking that the president is so fixated on the story, considering it is over two weeks old. Trump can dismissballroom architectsin a heartbeat, but he cant let this Times piece go. The fact that hes still raging about it is telling.Casey goes on to say that Trumps lies and exaggerations are Cohn speaking through him and that our focus shouldnt only be on what is actually happening to Trumps health but also on how thoroughly Trump relies on Cohns rules to manage reality. He cannot allow transparency. He cannot tolerate scrutiny. He cannot permit the idea that his body, like every body, is vulnerable to time.He also cant admit any political vulnerability, Casey adds. Its why he lashes out at any acknowledgment of mistakes. Its whyunfavorable polls are fake, court losses and elections rigged, investigative reporting treason.' From Cohn, Casey concludes, Trump learned that the truth doesnt matter as long as the illusion is airtight. I do these Tests because I owe it to our Country, the president wrote. In addition to the Medical, I have done something that no other President has done, on three separate occasions, the last one being recently, by taking what is known as a Cognitive Examination, something which few people would be able to do very well, including those working at The New York Times, and I ACED all three of them in front of large numbers of doctors and experts, most of whom I do not know. I have been told that few people have been able to ace this Examination and, in fact, most do very poorly, which is why many other Presidents have decided not to take it at all.Casey believes these claims can be easily explained. When Trump doesnt want you to see something, he overkills, overcompensates, and overreacts. Thats when you know something is very, very wrong.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Meet the Artist Turning Instagram Into a Queer History Playground
Brazilian artist Yann Hatchuel has a knack for making people stop mid-scroll. What looks at first like a feed filled with sharp photography and unapologetic thirst suddenly reveals itself as something larger: a living archive of queer culture stitched together through styling, digital design and a mischievous sense of humor.Hatchuel, who gained attention with his single IGUAL, the Rio Pride theme song that featured a cascade of celebrity cameos from Britney Spears to Demi Lovato, has shifted his creative energy toward preserving queer history one post at a time. His page doesnt read like a portfolio; it reads like a museum that refuses to whisper.Reimagining a Disappearing CanonHatchuels feed revisits cornerstones of LGBTQ+ culture, including Pink Narcissus, Querelle, Tom of Finland, and the erotic subcultures that shaped identity for generations. Some posts revive covers from out-of-print queer magazines. Others examine kink, pup culture and the aesthetics that were once pushed into the margins. He says the motivation is simple: too much queer history lives in shadows or scattered fragments online. I kept noticing how many defining queer films, artists, and moments werent showing up anywhere online, especially not in ways that felt fun, sexy, and accessible, he says. If a single post sends someone googling Pink Narcissus or Tom of Finland, that makes it worth it.Sexiness as a Teaching ToolHatchuel knows his feed is equal parts archival and erotic, and he embraces the tension. That balance is completely intentional, and honestly, its vital, he says. For so many of us, our formative years were defined by repression. Reclaiming sexiness now isnt frivolous; its a radical act of recovery. He frames desire as a portal to the past, less academic, more embodied. Our ancestors didnt just suffer; they lived, they lusted, and they found joy in one another, he says. Sexiness makes the past visceral. It tells us that our desire has a lineage.Fighting Erasure With VisibilityFor Hatchuel, the urgency behind this project is tied to how fragile queer documentation can be. Queer history is notoriously fragile; it is often erased, burned, or simply left out of the textbooks, he says. When I reference works like Pink Narcissus, Querelle, or the art of Tom of Finland, I am pulling from a canon that was created in the shadows. He sees Instagram, a platform often dominated by fleeting trends, as an unlikely but powerful home for cultural preservation. Younger fans frequently message him saying theyre discovering these works for the first time. When a young person sees the dreamlike excess of Pink Narcissus or the hyper-masculine joy of a Tom of Finland drawing, they realize they have ancestors, he says. It shows the next generation that we have always existed.Bringing History Back to the StreetsHatchuel believes accessibility shouldnt mean sanitized. Hes not interested in watering down queer culture to fit a mainstream brand. For too long, our history has been gated behind paywalls or softened for mainstream consumption, he says. We lose the sweat and chaotic beauty that defined those moments. He argues that queer stories belong in the places they were born, nightlife, community spaces, and now, social media feeds. When we only tell the safe versions, we alienate the kids who dont fit in today, he says.Restoring the RadicalHis work often highlights kink and fetish communities, not as spectacle but as heritage. Hatchuel doesnt mince words about why those elements were erased. The mainstream narrative of LGBTQ+ rights relied on respectability politics, he says. Kink disrupts that. It refuses to adhere to heteronormative standards.Hes quick to remind people that leather communities helped hold up the AIDS crisis response when government systems failed. Erasing kink is a disservice to our survival, he says. Its about negotiation, trust, and freedom from shame.A Living, Breathing Time CapsuleHatchuels Instagram is part celebration, part protest, and part digital time machine. He doesnt claim to be a historian, yet his feed offers something academics often cant: immediacy. Its culture preserved with sweat, humor and desire intact. If we dont curate our own history, someone else will erase it, he says. And in the hands of Yann Hatchuel, queer history isnt just remembered, it glows, flexes, and refuses to behave.Source
