APNEWS.COMRain-soaked California still at risk of floods and high surfA car is buried in mud after a series of storms Thursday, Dec. 25, 2025, in Wrightwood, Calif. (AP Photo/William Liang)2025-12-26T05:04:25Z WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (AP) A strong storm system that brought relentless winds, rain and snowfall to California this week was expected to ease Friday, but there was still a risk of high surf along the coast, flash flooding near Los Angeles and avalanches in the Sierra Nevada.Waves near the San Francisco Bay Area could reach up to 25 feet (7.6 meters) Friday, parts of Southern California were at risk of flooding, and avalanches could hit the Lake Tahoe area, officials warned. Residents were told to be ready to evacuate the mountain town of Wrightwood about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles because of mudslides.Atmospheric rivers carried massive plumes of moisture from the tropics during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. The storms were blamed for at least two deaths earlier in the week. The system brought the wettest Christmas season to downtown Los Angeles in 54 years, the National Weather Service said. Roads in the 5,000-resident town of Wrightwood were covered in rocks, debris and thick mud on Thursday. With power out, a gas station and coffee shop running on generators were serving as hubs for residents and visitors. Its really a crazy Christmas, said Jill Jenkins, who was spending the holiday with her 13-year-old grandson, Hunter Lopiccolo. Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel. Follow on Lopiccolo said the family almost evacuated the previous day, when water washed away a chunk of their backyard. But they decided to stay and still celebrated the holiday. Lopiccolo got a new snowboard and e-bike. We just played card games all night with candles and flashlights, he said. Davey Schneider hiked a mile and a half (1.6 kilometers) through rain and floodwater up to his shins from his Wrightwood residence Wednesday to rescue cats from his grandfathers house.I wanted to help them out because I wasnt confident that they were going to live, Schneider said Thursday. Fortunately, they all lived. Theyre all okay just a little bit scared. Arlene Corte said roads in town turned into rivers, but her house was not damaged. It could be a whole lot worse, she said. Were here talking. With more rain on the way, more than 150 firefighters were stationed in the area, said San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Shawn Millerick. Were ready, he said. Its all hands on deck at this point.A falling tree killed a San Diego man Wednesday, news outlets reported. Farther north, a Sacramento sheriffs deputy died in what appeared to be a weather-related crash.Areas along the coast, including Malibu, were under a flood watch until Friday afternoon, and wind and flood advisories were issued for much of the Sacramento Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area.Southern California typically gets half an inch to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.5 centimeters) of rain this time of year, but this week many areas could see between 4 and 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters), with even more in the mountains, National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Wofford said. More wind and heavy snow was expected in the Sierra Nevada, where gusts created near white-out conditions and made mountain pass travel treacherous. Gov. Gavin Newsom declared emergencies in six counties to allow state assistance. The state deployed resources and first responders to several coastal and Southern California counties, and the California National Guard was on standby.___Associated Press writers Sophie Austin in Oakland, California, and Hannah Schoenbaum in Salt Lake City contributed.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 81 Views 0 önizleme

APNEWS.COMYemen separatists accuse Saudi Arabia of launching airstrikes against their forcesThis is a locator map for Yemen with its capital, Sanaa. (AP Photo)2025-12-26T08:16:47Z ADEN, Yemen (AP) Separatists in southern Yemen accused Saudi Arabia on Friday of targeting their forces with airstrikes, something not immediately acknowledged by the kingdom after it warned the forces to withdraw from governorates they recently took over. The Southern Transitional Council, backed by the United Arab Emirates, said the strikes happened in Yemens Hadramout governorate. It wasnt immediately clear if there were any casualties from the strikes that further raise tensions in the war-torn nation and put at risk a fragile Saudi-led coalition that has been battling the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the countrys north for a decade.Amr Al Bidh, a foreign affairs special representative for the Council, said in a statement to The Associated Press that its fighters had been operating in eastern Hadramout on Friday after facing multiple ambushes from gunmen. Those attacks killed two fighters with the Council and wounded 12 others, Al Bidh said. The Saudi airstrikes happened after that, he added. The Council later described their operations in the area as seeking a wanted man and trying to cut off smuggling through the area. Saudi warnings precede strikes Faez bin Omar, a leading member in a coalition of tribes in Hadramout, told the AP that he believed the strikes served as a warning to the Council to withdraw its fighters from the area. An eyewitness to the strikes, Ahmed al-Khed, said he saw destroyed military vehicles afterward, believed to belong to forces allied to the Council. The Councils satellite channel AIC aired what appeared to be mobile phone footage it described as showing the strikes. In one video, a man speaking could be heard blaming the strike on Saudi aircraft.Officials in Saudi Arabia did not respond to a request for comment from the AP. On Thursday, the kingdom called on the Emirati-backed separatists in southern Yemen to withdraw. The Council moved earlier this month into Yemens governorates of Hadramout and Mahra. That had pushed out forces affiliated with the Saudi-backed National Shield Forces, another group in the coalition fighting the Houthis. Those aligned with the Council have increasingly flown the flag of South Yemen, which was a separate country from 1967-1990. Demonstrators rallied on Thursday in the southern port city of Aden to support political forces calling for South Yemen to secede again from Yemen. Saudis, Emiratis back different Yemen forcesFollowing the capture of Yemens capital, Sanaa, and much of the countrys north by the Houthis in 2014, Aden has been the seat of power for the internationally recognized government and forces aligned against the rebels. The actions by the separatists have put pressure on the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which maintain close relations and are members of the OPEC oil cartel, but also have competed for influence and international business in recent years. The UAE said in a statement Friday that it welcomed the efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support security and stability in Yemen. The UAE reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting all endeavors aimed at strengthening stability and development in Yemen, contributing positively to regional security and prosperity, it added. There has also been an escalation of violence in Sudan, another nation on the Red Sea, where the kingdom and the Emirates support opposing forces in that countrys ongoing war. The war in Yemen The Iranian-backed Houthis seized Sanaa in September 2014 and forced the internationally recognized government into exile. Iran denies arming the rebels, although Iranian-manufactured weaponry has been found on the battlefield and in sea shipments heading to Yemen despite a U.N. arms embargo.A Saudi-led coalition armed with U.S. weaponry and intelligence entered the war on the side of Yemens exiled government in March 2015. Years of inconclusive fighting have pushed the Arab worlds poorest nation to the brink of famine. The war has killed more than 150,000 people, including fighters and civilians, and created one of the globes worst humanitarian disasters, killing tens of thousands more. The Houthis, meanwhile, have launched attacks on hundreds of ships in the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war, greatly disrupting regional shipping. Further chaos in Yemen could again draw in the United States. Washington launched an intense bombing campaign targeting the rebels earlier this year that U.S. President Donald Trump halted just before his trip to the Middle East in October. The Biden administration also conducted strikes against the Houthis, including using B-2 bombers to target what it described as underground bunkers used by the Houthis.___Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. APNEWS.COMFormer Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak convicted in trial over 1MDB corruption scandalMalaysian former Prime Minister Najib Razak, center, is escorted by prison officers on his arrival at the Kuala Lumpur High Court complex in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Oct. 30, 2024. (AP Photo/Vincent Thian, File)2025-12-26T08:01:51Z PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia (AP) Imprisoned former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was convicted Friday following a corruption trial tied to multibillion-dollar looting of the 1MDB state investment fund. The nations High Court found Najib, 72, guilty on four counts of abuse of power and 21 charges of money laundering related to more than $700 million channelled into his personal bank accounts from the 1MDB fund.Najibs defense team was expected to make mitigation arguments before sentencing later Friday.Najib denied any wrongdoing and maintained the funds were a political donation from Saudi Arabia and that he had been misled by rogue financiers led by Low Taek Jho. Low, thought to be the scandals mastermind, remains at large. Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah said Najibs claim of a Saudi donation was incapable of belief. Four letters purportedly from the Saudi donor were forged and evidence clearly showed the funds originated from 1MDB, he said. He rejected defense arguments that Najib was an unwitting victim, duped by former 1MDB officials and Low. Witness testimonies had pointed to an unmistakble bond between Najib and Low, who had played a pivotal role in the scandal and operated as the proxy, the conduit, the intermediary and the facilitator for Najib in 1MDB, the judge said. The judge noted that Najib failed to take steps to verify the origin of the massive funds nor took action against Low. Instead, Najib used the money despite its suspicious origins and also took steps to protect his position, including by removing the then-attorney general and anti-corruption chief investigating the case, he said. Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel. Follow on The accused was no country bumpkin, said Sequerah, who took five hours to read the ruling. Any attempt to paint the accused as an ignoramus who was hopelessly unaware of the misdeeds going around him must therefore, fail miserably. The ruling marked a major milestone in one of the worlds largest financial scandals, which rippled across global markets and triggered investigations in the United States and other nations. Dressed in a blue suit, Najib appeared calm and at times wrote in his notebook.Najib, who served as prime minister from 2009 to 2018, currently is serving a prison sentence after being convicted in an earlier case linked to the 1MDB scandal, which led to his governments defeat in 2018. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2020 for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving 42 million ringgit ($10.3 million) channeled into his accounts from SRC International, a former unit of 1MDB.He began his sentence in August 2022 after losing a final appeal, becoming Malaysias first former leader to be jailed. The Pardons Board, a body that advises rulers on granting clemency, halved his sentence and sharply reduced his fine in 2024. Najib set up the 1MDB development fund shortly after taking office in 2009. He chaired 1MDBs advisory board and held veto power as finance minister while serving as prime minister. Between 2009 and 2014, top executives and associates of Najib looted over $4.5 billion from the fund, laundering it through countries including the U.S., Singapore and Switzerland, according to the U.S. Justice Department. Authorities alleged the funds were used to finance Hollywood films and extravagant purchases including hotels, a luxury yacht, art and jewelry. Jeff Sessions, the U.S. attorney general at the time, called it kleptocracy at its worst. The scandal also hit Wall Street, with Goldman Sachs facing billions in fines for its role in raising money for 1MDB.The scion of a prominent political family, Najib was long seen as untouchable until public anger over 1MDB led to the 2018 election defeat of his ruling party, which had governed Malaysia since the country gained independence from Britain in 1957.Earlier this week, Najib failed in his bid to serve his graft sentence under house arrest. Malaysias High Court ruled Monday that a rare royal order for home arrest issued by the nations former king was invalid because it was not made in accordance with constitutional requirements. Najibs lawyer has said they plan to appeal.Originally due for release in August 2028 after his sentence reduction, Najib now faces a longer stretch behind bars.Najibs wife, Rosmah Mansor, also was sentenced to 10 years in prison and a massive fine in 2022 in a separate graft case. She has been released on bail pending an appeal.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 76 Views 0 önizleme

APNEWS.COMWhat to know about the militants targeted by US airstrikes in northwest NigeriaPresident Donald Trump arrives on Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport, Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025, in West Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2025-12-26T05:37:24Z ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) The United States airstrikes that targeted Islamic State militants in northwestern Nigerias on Thursday marked a major escalation in an offensive that Nigerias overstretched military has struggled with for years.U.S. President Donald Trump said on social media that the powerful and deadly strikes in Sokoto state were carried out against Islamic State militants targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians. Residents and security analysts have said Nigerias security crisis affects both Christians, predominant in the south, and Muslims, who are the majority in the north.Nigeria, which is battling multiple armed groups, said the U.S. strikes were part of an exchange of intelligence and strategic coordination between the two countries. The Associated Press could not confirm the extent of the strikes impact. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in a post on X about the airstrikes, said: More to come... The militants targeted by US airstrikesThe armed groups in Africas most populous country include at least two affiliated with the Islamic State an offshoot of the Boko Haram extremist group known as the Islamic State West Africa Province in the northeast, and the lesser-known Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP) known locally as Lakurawa and prominent in the northwest.Although officials did not say exactly which group was targeted, security analysts said the target, if indeed against Islamic State militants, was likely members of Lakurawa, which became more lethal in border states like Sokoto and Kebbi in the last year, often targeting remote communities and security forces. The Nigerian military has said in the past that the group has roots in neighboring Niger and that it became more active in Nigerias border communities following a 2023 military coup. That coup resulted in fractured relations between Nigeria and Niger, and affected their multinational military operations along the porous border. Militants invited to provide security now torment villagesMultiple analysts have said Lakurawa has been active in northwest Nigeria since around 2017 when it was invited by traditional authorities in Sokoto to protect their communities from bandit groups. The militants, however, overstayed their welcome, clashing with some of the community leaders ... and enforcing a harsh interpretation of sharia law that alienated much of the rural population, according to James Barnett, an Africa researcher with the Washington-based Hudson Institute.Communities now openly say that Lakurawa are more oppressive and dangerous than the bandits they claim to protect them from, according to Malik Samuel, a Nigerian security researcher with Good Governance Africa. Lakurawa controls territories in Sokoto and Kebbi states, and has become known for killings, kidnapping, rape and armed robbery, Samuel said. But some of the attacks blamed on Lakurawa are by the Islamic State Sahel Province, which has expanded from Nigers Dosso region to northwestern Nigeria, according to the U.S.-based Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.ISSP has maintained a low profile, operating covertly to infiltrate and entrench itself along the Niger-Nigeria border, and is now also expanding its operations toward the Beninese border, the project said in a recent report. Nigerias insecurity is deep-rooted in social issuesThe security woes are more of a governance problem than a military one.Motives for attacks differ but the gangs are often driven by the near absence of a state and security presence in conflict hot spots, making recruitment easy. Those hot spots, data show, have some of the countrys highest levels of poverty, hunger and lack of jobs.Nigerias Minister of Defense Christopher Musa once said in his past capacity as the defense chief that military action is only 30% of what is needed to fix the countrys security crisis, while the remaining 70% depends on good governance. The absence of the state in remote communities is making it easy for non-state actors to come in and present themselves to the people as the best alternative government, said Samuel. US strikes seen as crucial support for Nigerias militaryThursdays U.S. strikes were seen as crucial help for Nigerias security forces, which are often overstretched and outgunned as they fight multiple security crises across different regions. In states like Sokoto, the military often carries out airstrikes targeting militant hideouts and Nigeria has embarked on mass recruitment of security forces. But analysts say military operations targeting the gangs are not usually sustained and the militants easily move on motorcycles to new locations through vast forests that connect several states in the north. They also often use hostages including schoolchildren as cover, making airstrikes difficult.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 73 Views 0 önizleme

APNEWS.COMTrump overturned decades of US trade policy in 2025. See the impact of his tariffs, in four chartsPresident Donald Trump speaks during an event to announce new tariffs in the Rose Garden at the White House, on April 2, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein, File)2025-12-26T11:31:27Z Since returning to the White House in January, President Donald Trump has overturned decades of U.S. trade policy building a wall of tariffs around what used to be a wide open economy. His double-digit taxes on imports from almost every country have disrupted global commerce and strained the budgets of consumers and businesses worldwide. They have also raised tens of billions of dollars for the U.S. Treasury. Trump has argued that his steep new import taxes are necessary to bring back wealth that was stolen from the U.S. He says they will narrow Americas decades-old trade deficit and bring manufacturing back to the country. But upending the global supply chain has proven costly for households facing rising prices. And the erratic way the president rolled out his tariffs announcing them, then suspending or altering them before conjuring up new ones made 2025 one of the most turbulent economic years in recent memory.Heres a look at the impact of Trumps tariffs over the last year, in four charts. Effective US tariff rateA key number for the overall impact of tariffs on U.S. consumers and businesses is the effective tariff rate which, unlike headline figures imposed by Trump for specific trade actions, provides an average based on the actual imports coming into the country. In 2025, per data from the Yale Budget Lab, the effective U.S. tariff rate peaked in April. But its still far higher than the average seen at the start of the year. Before finalizing shifts in consumption, Novembers effective tariff rate was nearly 17% seven times greater than Januarys average and the highest seen since 1935. Tariff revenue vs Americas trade deficitAmong selling points to justify his tariffs, Trump has repeatedly said they would reduce Americas longstanding trade deficit and bring revenue into the Treasury. Trumps higher tariffs are certainly raising money. Theyve raked in more than $236 billion this year through November much more than in years past. But they still account for just a fraction of the federal governments total revenue. And they havent raised nearly enough to justify the presidents claim that tariff revenue could replace federal income taxes or allow for windfall dividend checks for Americans. The U.S. trade deficit, meanwhile, has fallen significantly since the start of the year. The trade gap peaked to a monthly record of $136.4 billion in March, as consumers and businesses hurried to import foreign products before Trump could impose his tariffs on them. The trade gap narrowed to $52.8 billion in September, the latest month for which data is available. But the year-to-date deficit was still running 17% ahead of January-September 2024.Import shifts with Americas biggest trading partnersTrumps 2025 tariffs hit nearly every country in the world including Americas biggest trading partners. But his policies have had the biggest impact on U.S. trade with China, once the biggest source of American imports and now No. 3 behind Canada and Mexico. U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports now come to 47.5%, according to calculations by Chad Bown of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The value of goods coming into the U.S. from China fell nearly 25% during the first three-quarters of the year. Imports from Canada also dropped. But the value of products from Mexico, Vietnam and Taiwan grew year-to-date. Market swingsFor investors, the most volatile moments on the stock market this year arrived amid some of the most volatile moments for Trumps tariffs. The S&P 500, an index for the biggest public companies in the U.S., saw its biggest daily and weekly swings in April and largest monthly losses and gains in March and June, respectively.Need a recap of how Trumps trade actions unfolded in 2025? APNEWS.COMZelenskyy says meeting with Trump to happen in the near futureUkraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaks during a media conference at the EU Summit in Brussels, Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025. (AP Photo/Geert Vanden Wijngaert)2025-12-26T08:25:40Z KYIV, Ukraine (AP) A meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump will happen in the near future, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday, signaling progress in talks to end the nearly four-year war between Russia and Ukraine. We are not losing a single day. We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level with President Trump in the near future, Zelenskyy wrote on X. A lot can be decided before the New Year, he added.Zelenskyys announcement came after he said Thursday he had a good conversation with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trumps son-in-law Jared Kushner. Trump has unleashed a diplomatic push to end the war, but his efforts have run into sharply conflicting demands by Moscow and Kyiv.Zelenskyy said Tuesday he would be willing to withdraw troops from the countrys eastern industrial heartland as part of a plan to end the war, if Moscow also pulls back and the area becomes a demilitarized zone monitored by international forces. Though Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday that there had been slow but steady progress in the peace talks, Russia has given no indication that it will agree to any kind of withdrawal from land it has seized. In fact, Moscow has insisted that Ukraine relinquish the remaining territory it still holds in the Donbas an ultimatum that Ukraine has rejected. Russia has captured most of Luhansk and about 70% of Donetsk the two areas that make up the Donbas. On the ground, one person was killed and three others wounded when a guided aerial bomb hit a house in Ukraines Zaporizhzhia region, while six people were wounded in a missile strike on the city of Uman, local officials said Friday.Russian drone attacks on the city of Mykolaiv and its suburbs overnight into Friday left part of the city without power. Energy and port infrastructure were damaged by drones in the city of Odesa on the Black Sea. Meanwhile, Ukraine said it struck a major Russian oil refinery Thursday using British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles.Ukraines General Staff said its forces hit the Novoshakhtinsk refinery in Russias Rostov region. Multiple explosions were recorded. The target was hit, it wrote on Telegram.Rostov regional Gov. Yuri Slyusar said a firefighter was wounded when extinguishing the fire.Ukraines long-range drone strikes on Russian refineries aim to deprive Moscow of the oil export revenue it needs to pursue its full-scale invasion. Russia wants to cripple the Ukrainian power grid, seeking to deny civilians access to heat, light and running water in what Kyiv officials say is an attempt to weaponize winter.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 64 Views 0 önizleme

APNEWS.COMNigerian villagers are rattled by US airstrikes that made their homes shake and the sky glow redPeople visit the site of a U.S. airstrike in Northwest, Jabo, Nigeria, Friday, Dec. 26, 2025. (AP Photo/ Tunde Omolehin)2025-12-26T15:22:44Z JABO, Sokoto (AP) Sanusi Madabo, a 40-year-old farmer in the Nigerian village of Jabo, was preparing for bed Thursday night when he heard a loud noise that sounded like a plane crashing. He rushed outside his mud house with his wife to see the sky glowing a bright red.The light burned bright for hours, Madabo said: It was almost like daytime. He did not learn until later that he had witnessed a U.S attack on an alleged Islamic State camp. U.S. President Donald Trump announced late Thursday that the U.S had launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in north-west Nigeria. The Nigerian government has since confirmed the strike was a joint collaboration with the U.S government. Residents of Jabo, a village in the northwestern Nigerian state of Sokoto, told The Associated Press in interviews Friday that they were seized with panic and confusion at the airstrikes. They also said the village had never experienced a terror attack, even though attacks regularly occur in neighboring villages. As it approached our area, the heat became intense, recalled Abubakar Sani, who lives just a few houses from the scene of the explosion. Our rooms began to shake, and then fire broke out, he told the AP. The Nigerian government should take appropriate measures to protect us as citizens. We have never experienced anything like this before. The Nigerian military did not respond to an AP request asking how many locations were targeted. Its a new phase of an old conflictThe strikes are the outcome of a months-long tense diplomatic clash between the West African nation and the U.S. that has evolved to result in a new form of cooperation. The Trump administration has been claiming that Nigeria is witnessing a Christian genocide, a claim the Nigerian government has rejected, and which caused initial tensions. But now Nigerias Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the strikes resulted from intelligence sharing and strategic coordination between the two governments. Yusuf Tuggar, Nigerias foreign minister, called the airstrikes a new phase of an old conflict and said he expected more strikes to follow. For us, it is something that has been ongoing, Tuggar added, referring to attacks that have targeted Christians and Muslims in Nigeria for years.Bulama Burkati, a security analyst on sub-Saharan Africa at the Tony Blair Institute, said the fear of residents is compounded by a lack of information.Residents say there were no casualties, and security operatives have cordoned off the area. But the Nigerian government has yet to release information about the militants who were targeted and the post-strike assessment of casualties. What can help in dousing the tension is for the American and Nigerian governments to declare who was targeted, what was attacked, and what has happened so far, Burkati said. Such information is still missing, and the more opaque the governments are, the more panic there would be on the ground, and that is what will escalate tension. Foreign fighters operated in NigeriaAnalysts say the strikes might have been intended for the Lakurawa group, a relatively new entrant to Nigerias complex security crisis. The groups first attack was recorded around 2018 in the northwestern region before the Nigerian government officially announced its presence last year. The composition of the group has been documented by security researchers as primarily consisting of foreigners from the Sahel region of Africa. However, experts say ties between the Lakurawa group and the Islamic State are unproven. The Islamic State West African Province, a branch of ISIS in Nigeria, has its strongholds in the northeastern part of the country, where it is currently involved in a power struggle with its parent organisation, Boko Haram. What might have happened is that, working with the American government, Nigeria identified Lakurawa as a threat and identified camps that belong to the group, Burkati said.Either way, the local people feel vulnerable.Aliyu Garba, a traditional leader in the village, told the AP that debris left by the strikes was scattered around and residents rushed to the scene before the arrival of security operatives. People picked up metal pieces hoping for valuable metal which they could trade, and he fears they could get hurt. The strikes also rattled 17-year-old Balira Saidu as she prepared to get married.I am supposed to be thinking about my wedding, but right now I am panicking, she said. The strike has changed everything. My family is afraid, and I dont even know if it is safe to continue with the wedding plan in Jabo.___ Adetayo reported from Lagos, Nigeria.
