THEONION.COMNew Research Reveals Ancient Egyptians Received Significant Help From Parents While Building PyramidsUNIVERSITY PARK, PAShedding light on the age-old mystery of how anyone could afford the gigantic structures, a study published Thursday in the Journal Of Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology And Heritage Studies revealed that ancient Egyptians received significant help from their parents while building the pyramids. Though historians initially theorized that the civilization constructed the towering tombs of pharaohs with their own money, weve confirmed that their wealthy fathers gave them down payments for the limestone and even chipped in for utilities, said lead research archaeologist David Bell, adding that high interest rates and limited job opportunities made it difficult for ancient Egyptians to get into the pyramid market on their own. We also found evidence that their uncle let them use his barge to transport the stones down the Nile for free. However, having family involved caused issuestheir mother demanded she pick out the sarcophagus since she was paying for it. And, despite all the assistance, ancient Egyptians lied to their friends about financing the pyramids with money earned from their art projects. The study also found that once the ancient Egyptians finished building the pyramids, their parents paid for them to go to grad school. The post New Research Reveals Ancient Egyptians Received Significant Help From Parents While Building Pyramids appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 27 Views 0 Reviews -
THEONION.COMAldi CEO Chased Off From Whole Foods DumpstersNAPERVILLE, ILScurrying into the alley as employees chased her with a broom, Aldi CEO Atty McGrath reportedly had to be shooed away Tuesday after she was seen rummaging through the dumpsters behind a local Whole Foods. We keep finding her rooting around our bins looking for food items she can stock her shelves with, said assistant manager Ed Ruiz, describing multiple occasions upon which team members had found the discount grocery chains top executive peeling the 365 labels off expired cans of beans or scraping mold off a carton of raspberries. I personally dont mind if our excess food can be used to feed hungry Aldi shoppers, but it becomes a safety issue when she starts approaching our customers and trying to sell them a bruised cantaloupe she scavenged for 39 cents a pound. Everyone can hear her banging around in the garbage and rattling on about sell-by dates being merely a suggestion. Were going to have to start locking the bins at night to keep her out. At press time, the CEOs of Dollar Tree and Dollar General had been spotted behind an Aldi dumpster in Cleveland wrestling over a package of broken clothes hangers. The post Aldi CEO Chased Off From Whole Foods Dumpsters appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 28 Views 0 Reviews -

APNEWS.COMUS consumer prices slowed unexpectedly in November, but still up 2.7% from a year earlierShoppers walk around the Somerset Collection mall, Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, in Troy, Mich. (AP Photo/Ryan Sun)2025-12-18T13:38:04Z WASHINGTON (AP) U.S. inflation slowed unexpectedly last month, the government said in a report that was delayed and likely distorted by the government shutdown. The Labor Department reported Thursday that its consumer price index rose 2.7% in November from a year earlier. Yet, year-over-year inflation remains well above the Federal Reserves 2% target, and Americans are complaining loudly about the high cost of living. The report was delayed eight days by the federal governments 43-day shutdown, which also prevented the Labor Department from compiling overall numbers for consumer prices and core inflation in October. Thursday report gave investors, businesses and policymakers their first look at CPI since the September numbers were released on Oct. 24.Consumers prices had risen 3% in September from a year earlier, and forecasters had expected the November CPI to match that year-over-year increase. Energy prices, driven up by sharply higher fuel oil prices, rose 4.2% in November. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core inflation rose 2.6%, compared with a 3% year-over-year gain in September and the lowest since March 2021. U.S. inflation is still stubbornly high, partly because of President Donald Trumps decision to impose double-digit taxes on imports from almost every country on earth along with targeted tariffs on specific products like steel, aluminum and autos. The presidents tariffs have so far proved less inflationary than economists feared. But they do put upward pressure on prices and complicate matters at the Fed, which is trying to decide whether to keep cutting its benchmark interest rate to support a sputtering job market or whether to hold off until inflationary pressures ease. The central bank last week decided to reduce the rate for the third time this year, but Fed officials signaled that they expect just one cut in 2026. Kay Haigh, global co-head of fixed income and liquidity solutions at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, warned that the November numbers were noisy ... The canceling of the October report makes month-on-month comparisons impossible, for example, while the truncated information-gathering process given the shutdown could have caused systematic biases in the data. The Fed will instead focus on the December CPI released in mid-January, just two weeks before its next meeting, as a more accurate bellwether for inflation.'Trump delivered a politically charged speech Wednesday carried live in prime time on network television, seeking to pin the blame for economic challenges on Democrats. The speech was a rehash of his recent messaging that has so far been unable to calm public anxiety about the cost of groceries, housing, utilities and other basic goods. Trump has promised an economic boom, yet inflation has stayed elevated and the job market has weakened sharply in the wake of his import taxes.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.404MEDIA.COWhy Are We Obsessed With Aliens? The past few years have been very exciting for those who want to believe. The U.S. government has released tantalizing videos and held several gripping hearings showing and discussing UFOs. People who always thought the government was hiding evidence of alien life from the general population saw it as proof that what theyve said was happening all along. Skeptics have made compelling arguments for why all these revelations could be anything but aliens. But this debate and humanitys obsession with aliens goes as far back as recorded history. In her book, First Contact: The Story of Our Obsession with Aliens, 404 Medias science reporter and author of The Abstract newsletter Becky Ferreira delves deep into this history, what it teaches us about humans, and what the near and far future of the search for alien life looks like.I had a great time reading Beckys book and an even better time discussing it with her on the podcast. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTexas unveils tip line to report & send pictures of suspected trans women using the restroomTexas virulently anti-trans attorney general, Ken Paxton (R), has launched a tip line that allows people to report on suspected trans people they believe are violating the states new bathroom ban.In a statement announcing the tip line, Paxton said the Texas Womens Privacy Act which requires people in public buildings to use bathrooms based on sex assigned at birth was passed to ensure that women and girls in Texas are protected from mentally ill men wanting to violate their basic right to privacy. Related Trans youth & families sue hospitals for denying them care: Theyre living through a nightmare Its absolute insanity that action like this is even needed, he claimed, but unfortunately, in the day and age of radical leftism, it is. In reality, research has shown no evidence that allowing trans women access to single-sex spaces like bathrooms poses a safety risk to cisgender women. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In fact, forcing trans people to use facilities that do not align with their gender identity can result in high rates of harassment and violence against transgender people as well as cisgender people, particularly women who do not conform to traditional ideas of femininity, according to theMovement Advancement Project. A 2021 study from UCLAs Williams Institute found that trans people arefour times more likely than cis peopleto be victims of violent crime.Nevertheless, the enactment of the legislation marks the culmination of a10-year effort by Texas Republicans. The law does not allow an individual to be punished or fined by the state; rather, it fines the institution that allowed the infraction $25,000, plus an additional $125,000 per day for additional violations. The law also requires the attorney generals office to investigate complaints, but first, complaints must be filed with the accused agency. Together, we will uproot and bring justice to any state agency or political subdivision that opens the door for men to violate womens privacy, dignity, and safety, Paxton said.Paxtons tip line requires folks to submit the original complaint that was filed with the accused agency in addition to filling out the online form and providing evidence that a trans person used the restroom. Perhaps most concerning, it also includes an option to submit up to five photos, even though taking pictures in restrooms is illegal.Brian Klosterboer, senior staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, said the tip line wrongly encourages Texans to violate each others privacy in bathrooms. The Attorney General has tried for years to vilify and dehumanize transgender Texans, Klosterboer said, but he cant strip away every persons right to privacy and right to live our lives free from gender stereotyping.Critics of the law have worried that it will spark violent over-policing by the institutions at risk of these massive fines. This policing will affect both trans and cis people who dont fit strict gender norms. The law has already been used in ways that lawmakers may not have intended. Students at the University ofTexasSan Antonio (UTSA), for example, are being forced out of their current dorm rooms and made to relocate because of the ban. At UTSA, mixed-gender dorms include pairs of rooms separated by a shared bathroom; often, those rooms are occupied by people of different genders.Any students sharing a bathroom between their rooms with someone of a different sex assigned at birth are being forcibly rehoused to comply with the new law.On December 6, transgender protestors with a group called the 6W Project visited the Texas Capitol and attempted to use the restrooms that aligned with their gender identities to make a point about the lack of enforcement mechanisms in the law.At first, they easily enteredthe bathrooms of their choice, then proceeded to give speeches in the Capitol Rotunda,The Texas Tribunereported. But when they attempted to use the restrooms a second time, officers stopped them and asked to see their IDs. Officers claimed in a statement that the ID requests were voluntary, though those who did not show their IDs were barred from entering the bathroom. The officers did allow two trans women with female markers on their IDs to enter the womens restrooms. Officers also reportedly only guarded the womens restroom and not the mens.I think that the Texas government just established that they have no consistent enforceable standards for this law, protester Matilda Miller told theTexas Tribune. What we did was not radical, it was not profound, added 6W Project co-founder Ry Vazquez. People use the restroom every day in a public setting, and for it to become what it is now, where it is now an active threat to someone who is not prepared, is utterly abysmal.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews -

PROJECTS.PROPUBLICA.ORGLook Up Where Your Generic Prescription Drugs Were MadeSee the full news app on ProPublica.org.The post Look Up Where Your Generic Prescription Drugs Were Made appeared first on ProPublica.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews -
WWW.PROPUBLICA.ORGHow We Created a Tool That Tells You Where Your Generic Drugs Were MadeTo understand how risky drugs could end up in your medicine cabinet, ProPublica spent more than a year and a half investigating the Food and Drug Administrations oversight of the foreign factories that make generic medications and have been cited for violating critical quality standards. It quickly became clear through our reporting that patients and doctors dont reliably have the information they need to make informed decisions about the medicines they take or prescribe.ProPublica has created Rx Inspector, a tool that aims to help. You can look up your generic prescription drugs, and well guide you to the specific facility that made them. We were able to link more than 80% of generic prescription drug products in our database to a factory that made them using databases of label information, manufacturing facilities and location data that we sued the FDA for. Additionally, we included the history of FDA actions at those facilities based on a trove of inspection records we assembled.Keep in mind that if you turn up a troubling inspection report, it doesnt necessarily mean that your drug is compromised. Doctors and pharmacists advise that you not stop taking your medications. Instead, you should talk to your health care provider about any concerns.Look up your prescriptions using the tool here. Our ongoing reporting has focused on the safety of generic drugs, which represent the vast majority of all prescriptions filled in the United States. Thus, Rx Inspector does not include brand-name or over-the-counter drugs, at least for now. We excluded gases (like oxygen tanks) and intradermal route drugs (many of these were allergy tests for things like feline hair).ProPublica described the app and the methodology used to build it to the FDA, which did not comment. The agency previously told ProPublica that it doesnt reveal where drugs are made on inspection reports to protect what it deemed confidential commercial information.Heres how we did it:Getting Lists of Drugs and FacilitiesFirst, we needed to get a list of prescription drugs. We downloaded the National Drug Code product list from the FDA. A company that wants to make a generic must file an Abbreviated New Drug Application for approval. We used those ANDA numbers to filter our list to generic drugs only.We included biological drug products, such as insulin. We opted to include authorized generics, which are brand-name drugs that are marketed without the brand-name label, because we thought consumers may not know their generic is actually a brand-name drug.We then joined that list of drugs to the Structured Product Labeling database from DailyMed, a National Institutes of Health resource that contains information on more than 155,000 drug labels submitted to the FDA by companies. We used that data to get basic information about the drugs, like the form (pill, injectable, etc.), dose, color, imprints and more. In some, but not all, cases, it also contained identifiers or addresses that we could use to link to the agencys official list of manufacturing locations. We then matched the drugs to three different facility lists:The first and primary list comes from the FDAs Electronic Drug Registration and Listing System. That database contains the addresses of drugmakers factories. It also has two numeric identifiers: the FDA Establishment Identifier and a Dun & Bradstreet, or DUNS, number. The second facility list comes from a federal lawsuit we filed against the FDA for a list of manufacturer addresses connected to their ANDA numbers among other information. We received a partial list, which we used when we only had ANDA numbers for a drug. And finally, we have a list of historical facilities, which allows us to identify production sites and link to them via FEI number if other routes dont work.Joining Them TogetherIn October, we detailed our unsuccessful search for the original manufacturer of a popular cholesterol generic through a labyrinth of company names and complex databases that few consumers would even know exist. We decided we had to do something similar for nearly 47,000 drug products.Different datasets had varying identifiers, and we had to link multiple together to find the correct facilities. For example, if all we had was an ANDA number, we used the facility list we obtained from our lawsuit, which also was listed by ANDA. If we had an FEI, we could link it to the FDAs official list of facilities.Sometimes, we had neither. In cases where we did not have any useful identifiers, we searched the product labeling data for any manufacturing addresses and attempted to match them to our facility lists. We used both fuzzy text matching and geocoding to do this and then manually reviewed our matches. For repackaged or relabeled drugs, we traced back to the original label using the source NDC code.In total, we were able to match more than 39,250 products to a manufacturing facility.Getting the Inspection DataLinking up individual drugs was only half the battle. The next thing we did was acquire the FDAs inspection outcomes for facilities and join them back to our facility lists. We acquired data on FDA inspections from a variety of sources. First, we turned to the FDAs public inspections dashboard for inspections since 2008. We used only information related to drugs or biologics, excluding inspections related to food, cosmetics, tobacco, medical devices and veterinary products. This dashboard contained the dates and outcomes of inspections, as well as citations detailing any violations of federal code. We linked these reports back to a facility with a matching FEI number. That still only gave us limited information for inspections. For documents with more details, we needed whats known as a Form 483, which is where inspectors document problems they observe at a facility. Unfortunately, the FDA does not make all 483s public. We began by exporting those that have been published in the inspections dashboard, though we know this is incomplete. We also went directly to the FDA and asked for all the 483s that had already been released publicly. They delivered a trove of almost 40,000 documents. We linked the 483s to an inspection by extracting text from the documents using optical character recognition, connecting them to a facility using the FEI number and finding inspections of that facility within 10 days of the date of the letter. We were unable to link every 483 to an inspection because the FDAs public inspections data does not include every inspection the agency conducts. The FDA publishes warning letters that detail significant violation(s) of federal requirement(s). We obtained these from the FDAs website going back to 2020, filtered out the ones not related to drugs and connected the rest to a facility using the FEI number. Some facilities are outright banned from sending drugs to the U.S. market for a time, with exceptions for certain drugs as ProPublica detailed in reporting this year. The FDA calls this an import alert. We used the Internet Archives Wayback Machine to find hundreds of import alert lists published by the FDA over more than 15 years. The lists identified factories banned from shipping drugs to the United States because the FDA found manufacturing violations. We focused on 66-40 alerts, which call out drug manufacturing facilities that do not meet good manufacturing practice standards. We considered the published date on the alert as the start date. We are unable to tell when an alert was lifted and instead approximate it using the date we last see the facility on the list. Import alerts do not include FEI numbers to easily identify the facility in question, so we used the entity name and address to tie them back to a facility. We attempted to identify exemptions to import alerts by looking for strings like excluded from DWPE (detention without physical examination), then parse it manually to get a clean list of drugs. To support our research, we paid for access to Redica Systems, a quality and regulatory intelligence company with a vast collection of FDA inspection documents. We used Redicas database to spot-check our own work.We know that much of the data represented here is likely an undercount. Clerical errors could have resulted in missed connections. The FDA sometimes removes inspection outcomes from its dashboard, and our method of scraping through the Internet Archive is subject to availability. We were also limited in how completely we could obtain 483s, warning letters and import alerts. There may be additional communications between the company and the FDA that are not reflected in our database because they have not been made public.Still, this is the most comprehensive public list of FDA actions tied to drugs that has ever been assembled. The post How We Created a Tool That Tells You Where Your Generic Drugs Were Made appeared first on ProPublica.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews -
WWW.PROPUBLICA.ORGRx Inspector: ProPublicas New Tool Provides Drug Info the FDA WontWith every bottle of prescription medication comes an implied promise: The drugs are safe and effective and meet strict standards set by the Food and Drug Administration. But the agency known as one of the worlds toughest regulators provides only intermittent oversight of the foreign factories where generic drugs are made. And when investigators turn up mold, filthy equipment and contaminants in those facilities, the FDA keeps the names of the drugs they make secret.Consumers often have no way of knowing if the medications they are taking came from factories that used dirty water, were infested by insects or birds, or were outright banned from shipping drugs to the U.S., but then granted special exemptions to do so anyway.Today, ProPublica is launching Rx Inspector, a first-of-its-kind database that provides answers to what the FDA wont tell us: where our generics are coming from and the track records of the factories that made them. The information is harder to find than you may think.Labels on pill bottles often list a distributor or repackager rather than the actual manufacturer and some have no information at all. When ProPublica asked our readers to send in photos of their pill bottles, they flooded our inbox with pictures proving just how difficult that information is to come by.Even though generic drugs make up 90% of prescriptions dispensed in the U.S., the FDA only provides piecemeal information about them. Its scattered across different websites with no easy way to link drugs to their manufacturers, factory locations and regulatory track records. Over many months, our journalists connected that data. In one case, ProPublica had to sue the FDA in federal court and received a partial list of factory locations. You can use this app to connect your own medication to the manufacturer that made it, to the specific factory where it was made and to any FDA inspection reports and serious compliance violations linked to that facility that ProPublica has obtained. For example, you can enter your drug name and any information on the label of your pill bottle about the company that may have made it. If you dont have a company name, you can enter the color of your pills, or any markings on them, details that can lead you to information for your specific drug. From there, you can learn the name of the actual manufacturer (not the company that simply repackaged or distributed it). And you can also see the address for the factory that produced it.If the factory has been inspected by the FDA, well show you the inspection reports and any subsequent warning letters. We didnt have access to every inspection report, so you may only see summary information that includes the dates of the inspections and any findings. For pharmacists and others particularly knowledgeable about drugs, weve added an advanced search option so that you can enter key information, such as the National Drug Code, and quickly pull up manufacturing and regulatory details. Finally, this app will allow you to learn more about individual drugmakers overall by providing a way to search for their factories. By entering a company name, you can see when those factories were last inspected and whether the FDA took any action in recent years.Keep in mind that if you turn up a troubling inspection report, it doesnt necessarily mean that your drug is compromised. Doctors and pharmacists advise that you not stop taking your medications. Instead, you should talk to your health care provider about any concerns.ProPublica described the app and the methodology used to build it to the FDA, which did not comment. The agency previously told ProPublica that it doesnt reveal where drugs are made on inspection reports to protect what it deemed confidential commercial information. Our data is incomplete in places. The FDA, for example, hasnt released all of its inspection reports. And though the agency provided ProPublica with a list of medications and the factories that made them, some locations were missing. APNEWS.COMBrian Walshe sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife nearly 3 years agoBrian Walshe, center, stands with his lawyers Kelli Porges and Larry Tipton as they listen to the jury announce the guilty verdict of first degree murder of his wife Ana in 2023 by a Norfolk Superior Court jury in Dedham, Mass., on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025. (Greg Derr/The Patriot Ledger via AP, Pool)2025-12-18T04:52:03Z BOSTON (AP) A Boston-area man was sentenced Thursday to life in a Massachusetts state prison for the grisly murder of his wife, who disappeared nearly three years ago and whose body has never been found. Brian Walshe was convicted Monday of first-degree murder in the killing of Ana Walshe. The sentence carries no possibility of parole. He pleaded guilty in November to misleading police and illegally disposing of a body after admitting he had dismembered her body and disposed of it in dumpster. He said he did so only after panicking when he found she had died in bed. Ana Walshe, a real estate agent who immigrated from Serbia, was last seen early Jan. 1, 2023, after a New Years Eve dinner at the couples home. During the trial, prosecutors leaned heavily on digital evidence found on devices connected to Walshe, including online searches for dismemberment and best ways to dispose of a body, how long before a body starts to smell and hacksaw best tool to dismember. Investigators also found searches on a laptop that included how long for someone missing to inherit, how long missing to be dead, and can you throw away body parts, prosecutors told the jury. Surveillance video also showed a man resembling Walshe throwing what appeared to be heavy trash bags into a dumpster not far from the couples home. A subsequent search of a trash processing facility near his mothers home uncovered bags containing a hatchet, hammer, sheers, hacksaw, towels and a protective Tyvek suit, cleaning agents, a Prada purse, boots like the ones Ana Walshe was last seen wearing and a COVID-19 vaccination card with her name. Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel. Follow on Prosecutors told the jury that the Massachusetts State Crime Laboratory examined some of the items and found Ana and Brian Walshes DNA on the Tyvek suit and Ana Walshes DNA on the hatchet, hacksaw and other items. Prosecutors floated several possible motives for the killing. An insurance executive testified that Brian Walshe was the sole beneficiary of Ana Walshes $1 million life insurance policy, suggesting a financial motive. But prosecutors also portrayed a marriage that was falling apart; Brian Walshe was confined at their home in the affluent coastal community of Cohasset, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Boston, awaiting sentencing on an art fraud case. Ana Walshe meanwhile commuted from their home to Washington, D.C., where she worked. The year before she died, his wife had started an affair, details of which were shared in court by her boyfriend William Fastow. Brian Walshes attorney denied that his client knew about the affair. In his opening, Walshes attorney, Larry Tipton, argued it was not a murder case but what he called a sudden unexplained death. He said the couple loved each other and were planning for the future. But Walshes defense never called a witness and Brian Walshe declined to testify. When initially questioned by investigators, Walshe said his wife had been called to Washington on New Years Day for a work emergency. But witnesses testified there was no evidence Ana Walshe took a ride service to the airport or boarded a flight. Walshe didnt contact her employer until Jan. 4.The couples three young children are in state custody. ___Whittle reported from Portland, Maine. WWW.PRIDE.COMWhat queer people should know about the current backlash to going 'no contact' with familyPolitics has divided us, and tensions in the U.S. are at an all-time high, which means the holidays are about to get even more complicated. Conversations about how to handle rifts in a family due to abuse, lack of acceptance for who you are, or ideological differences that point to an absence of shared values are everywhere in American society right now. Oprah devoted an entire podcast episode to exploring the topic, featuring experts sympathizing with parents who have been cut off, and podcaster and author Mel Roberts wrote an op-ed for the New York Times expounding on why ending your relationship with your family might not be the best solution. This discussion about family estrangement and the growing trend of going no contact," where you cut off all ties and avenues of communication, may be new for heterosexuals, but for the LGBTQ+ community, this topic is all too familiar. Whether your family kicked you out or cut ties because of your sexuality or gender identity, or you put up boundaries because their judgment and lack of respect were painful or abusive, queer people have been making tough choices about their family of origin for decades. This kind of family estrangement seems like its everywhere right now, and while queer people have been dealing with this for years, rising political tensions have only made it more common, with 50% of LGBTQ+ adults reporting they are estranged from their family in a 2023 study. What is family estrangement? In the simplest terms, family estrangement is a shift in dynamics between members for the purpose of safety and protection, Dr. Shainna Ali, a mental health counselor, educator, and advocate, who has written extensively about the coming out process, tells PRIDE.There can be a myriad of reasons why you might cut off contact with your family, but for queer people, it is often tied to the way their family responds to them coming out. Family estrangement involves separating from ones family of origin when there is refusal by the family to embrace the LGBTQIA+ identity of their children, says John Sovec, an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist and author of Out: A Parents Guide to Supporting Their LGBTQIA+ Kid Through Coming Out and Beyond. Losing your family in this way, whether their family disowned them or they were the ones to sever the relationship, can cause depression, anxiety, and loneliness, he says.Being estranged from your family is so commonplace in queer culture that found family has become extremely important. Some of my adult queer clients have no contact with their family members in order to protect their peace due to trauma in their upbringing, Christine Ruberti-Bruning, a licensed therapist specializing in queer and trans affirming therapy, explains. These folks find their own chosen family in their communities. When is it necessary to do?Intentionally separating from your family of origin may be necessary if youve tried to address the issues but nothing has changed, or you feel emotionally or physically unsafe around your relatives. In unhealthy dynamics with little opportunity or persistent failed opportunities for change, growth, and healing, individuals may consider shifting family dynamics for their well-being, and sometimes also for the well-being of others (e.g., partners, children), according to Dr. Ali, who says that while cutting of fcontact can be painful, it can also give you safety and security, through improved self-esteem, self-respect, and overall well-being.Some queer people choose to go no contact with their family to protect their mental health, while others may decide to keep some lines of communication open in the hopes of saving the relationship. Regardless of what path you choose, there are drawbacks and benefits. Keeping toxic people in your life may adversely impact your emotional well-being, but when you become estranged, youre also losing a family member.Estrangement doesn't have to be all or nothing. Some of the clients I work with maintain limited contact over phone with family members but don't spend time with them in person, Roberti-Bruning says. Navigating these types of relationships can help clients build confidence to set boundaries and in some cases, maintain a healthier relationship. The main drawback is potentially not having a relationship with that family member, but for some people, it is necessary to protect their mental health. How is it different for LGBTQ+ people?Heterosexual people may have to sever ties with their family over political disagreements, substance abuse issues, emotional or physical abuse, or a host of other problems, but for queer people, there is usually an underlying judgment about who they are at their core. As an adult, this can be intimidating and heartbreaking if your family cuts you off, but for young people especially trans teenagers it can also be dangerous. Some LGBTQ+ people might face homophobia and transphobia in their family dynamics, making it unsafe for them to come out, Roberti-Bruning says. The fear of being disowned or kicked out of their home is very real, especially if you're a trans teen. The flip side of this coin is that for queer people who havent been kicked out but are being treated poorly by family because of their gender or sexual identity, they may have to be the ones to cut off contact. It is common of many queer people to go along with the family story and partially bury their true identity until the pain of this subterfuge become too great and they may need to separate them from the family mythology, Sovec says.Is going no contact used as a tactic too often? There has been a lot of discourse lately about going no contact being overused by younger people, but Dr. Ali says that instead of focusing on how many people are choosing this path, we should ask why they feel it is necessary to make this choice. There has been a lot of backlash regarding how far is too far? For the LGBTQ+ community, the importance of safety and security may have key implications that should not be overlooked, she says. For example, an individual who comes out to a parent and is encouraged to pursue conversion therapy, is told they are sinful, and is threatened by loved ones may consider shifting boundaries to support their safety and well-being.This isnt about jumping on a trend or taking the easy way out of a tough situation. Making the choice to cut off your whole family of origin or a single member can be one of the scariest things a queer person will ever do, but it may be necessary to get out of unhealthy family dynamics, Sovec says.Setting clear boundaries with abusive family members who cannot support a persons LGBTQIA+ identity allows for personal growth and an escape from the painful efforts of trying to [suppress] their queer identity so as not to offend anyone and maintain a place at the family table, he explains. For queer people, there are real reasons behind cutting off your family. For adult queer people, some family members may refuse to use their correct pronouns and continually deadname them, Roberti-Bruning says. The clients I work with have to decide what kind of relationship they want with their family member, and whether they want to put in the work to educate them on their identity. Assuming their family member is willing to have an open mind, which isn't guaranteed. If you are considering going no contact, what is important to know?If youve gotten to the point where going no contact with your family seems like the right choice to make, be gentle with yourself as you experience the grief of losing those relationships, but stay firm in the boundaries youve set. Going no contact should not be impulsive, and for many, it is not. More often, it happens after thorough consideration, investment, and past failed efforts, Dr. Ali says. This conclusion is commonly reached out of exhaustion and is a worst-case scenario for many who make this choice. Moreover, many who make this decision often question if they are making the right choice. Being clear with yourself on your limits, your energy, and your effort helps to clarify if your decision is aligned with who you are and what you need. What do you need to know if you decide to reinitiate contact? If you decide that enough time has passed, or growth has happened, for you to get in touch with your family again, there is no one path to making that happen. Dr. Ali says that you can start with a wall and learn that a door or window is more applicable, but make sure you are clear about the new boundaries.Knowing what you can and cannot withstand is critical in considering if and when you can let someone back in, she says. A firm boundary, such as going no contact, does not require being enacted in perpetuity. Instead, knowing your boundary means also knowing the context in which it may no longer be required. But if you reinitiate contact, be aware that there may still be wounds from being rejected by the people who are supposed to love you unconditionally. Most people turn to their parents for validation and support and when they are rejected for simply being who they are, it hurts on a core deep level, Sovec says. One of the reasons many LGBTQIA+ people struggle with coming out to their families is that they already feel alienated on a daily basis living in a cis/hetero society and when their family rejects them, they can feel as if they have lost everything. Which is why the responsibility of fixing the relationship lies with the parents, who need to get educated, deal with their own emotional baggage, and finally make an effort to know and support their LGBTIA+ child for exactly who they are.Sources cited:Christine Ruberti-Bruning, a licensed therapist in Philadelphia, specializing in queer and trans affirming therapy.John Sovec, an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist and author of Out: A Parents Guide to Supporting Their LGBTQIA+ Kid Through Coming Out and Beyond.Dr. Shainna Ali, a mental health counselor, educator, and advocate, who has written extensively about the coming out process.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews -

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMDemocrats should kick the three transphobes who voted for MTGs bill out of the caucusThree Democrats crossed party lines yesterday to vote for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greenes (R-GA) bill to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth, and the party needs to kick them out. Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Vincente Gonzalez Jr (D-TX), and Don Davis (D-NC) all voted alongside 213 Republicans yesterday to pass Greenes anti-trans bill. If they had not voted for it, it would not have passed.Yes, Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE) is generally right that the party needs to be a big tent and allow some ideological diversity. But there are some lines that should not be crossed, and this is one of them. Related Everything is grooming now except for actually grooming children The bill is extreme. It makes it a crime to provide safe and effective health care to trans youth (and only to trans youth! The same procedures for cis youth are exempted in Greenes bill), punishable with up to 10 years imprisonment. This includes the parents of trans kids, who are only trying to do whats best for their kids, who happen to be the target of a five-year moral panic that gripped the GOP so that they could get people to stop talking about the failures of the presidents first term and his attempt to overthrow the federal government on January 6, 2021.All the reasons to support Greenes bill are terrible. There are the pseudoscientific reasons that you can read about on social media, like the idea that puberty blockers arent reversible (they are), that most trans kids change their minds (they dont), or that puberty blockers destroy trans kids health (they dont). Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today All the major medical professional organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Endocrine Society, and the American Medical Association support gender-affirming care as the standard of care, but people like Greene will still tell people to do your own research if they bring up the fact that real researchers who spend their lives studying the subject support gender-affirming care. And what kind of research is someone with no background in science supposed to do from their home? At best, the research theyll do will be orders of magnitude less rigorous than what those scientific bodies already did, and they probably wont even do that. Instead, what right-wingers mean when they say do your own research is watch this YouTube video made by someone who knows nothing or share this garbage Facebook meme. Thats how little these people know about what real scientific research looks like. Its no coincidence that Greene introduced this bill and is also a major opponent of vaccines. She has no respect for scientists, which gives her license to believe whatever she wants, facts be damned. Who cares how many lives are lost, right? The Democratic Party should stay away from that arrogant and harmful mentality.Perhaps the most anti-scientific belief these people buy into is the idea that a teacher or a parent or whoever else can turn a kid transgender by reading them a book or letting them play with the wrong genders toys.Thats just dumb. That is not how it works. We need to make fun of people who believe silly ideas like this and mock them out of polite society. The next set of reasons people support these kinds of bans is basically conspiracy theories. Parents are forcing their kids to be transgender because its in fashion or Doctors just want to make money off trans kids so they force all these medical treatments on them or Teachers and Democrats want kids to turn transgender because of the woke. Kids could not possibly be saying that theyre transgender in the face of an extremely transphobic society because thats what they are. No, it has to be a conspiracy of some kind! This is a purposeful lack of trust in people in positions of authority that makes running a society hard. We tell scientists, etc., that they have to achieve certain goals, and when they try, we dont just criticize the results; we deny that they should even have had the power to do their jobs in the first place.Parents, teachers, doctors, researchers all of these people are wrong not because they are working with different information than the rest of us. No, they are bad people who want to hurt children because theyre bad. Thats it. Again, this is the meat and potatoes of the anti-vaccine movement. In order to get people to believe in pseudoscientific lies, they have to convince them to stop listening to the actual experts, and to do that, they need to paint them as evil-doers. And quite literally. Many anti-trans activists have made it no secret that they believe that demons and the devil are behind any support for trans rights.Democrats should be working with people who have different belief systems, but there has to be a common basis of understanding the world and a respect for peoples humanity. People who think that public health officials who support trans kids are literally demons need to be excluded. They cannot be reached. And the party should not be lending them support.Greenes bill is also a multi-pronged assault on the partys fundamental values. It restricts peoples access to health care. And real health care, not supplements that conservatives sell on their podcasts. Thats a big deal for Democrats and should be a line in the sand: Patients should have control of their own bodies, and their doctors and parents can help them make those decisions without government interference. Its also an affront to free speech and expression. The same people who are against gender-affirming care are also against letting trans people dress and identify and act as they want to. To borrow an expression, the right hates trans people for their freedom, because they defy societys expectations of their sex in a profound way. Democrats are the party of personal freedom when it comes to social issues, and that should mean something.Last, this bill is an attack on a vulnerable minority because they are a vulnerable minority, and Democrats are the party of fighting oppression. Gender-affirming care has been around for a long time. Kids have been getting puberty blockers for decades. And mainstream Republicans never really cared until 2021. Even conservative Christians were mad that the 2020 Republican Party didnt care about taking away rights from trans kids. It took the GOPs losses in that election for the party to realize it could use trans people as a political pawn to win votes. And the only reason there was even a vote for Greenes bill yesterday was political haggling. Republicans could have put this bill up for a vote all year if they really believed in it, but instead only did so in exchange for support for a military funding bill.At the very least, Democratic leadership needs to realize that Cuellars, Gonzalezs, and Davis disloyalty to the party gave Republicans a political win.I would not have written this column about most other LGBTQ+ issues because there can be some reasonable debate on them. For example, I fully support LGBTQ+ inclusive antidiscrimination legislation. I could also imagine a situation where someone else disagrees with how a specific law is written, without their values being so different from mine that we couldnt work together on anything. But not here. Kids need health care, and Marjorie Taylor Greene should get exactly zero say in what kind of care doctors across the country provide. There is no redeeming value to Greenes bill. Democrats need to take action.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews -
WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMJudicial nominee squirms in heated exchange over past anti-woman & anti-LGBTQ+ commentsAn anti-trans judicial nominee was forced to answer for his past statements on gender, sex, marriage, and disability in a contentious exchange during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Subscribe to our Newsletter today After asking Olson to confirm if he did say those words, Olson was visibly anxious as he stumbled over his response. That, um, I dont recall the precise wording, but that sounds, um familiar, Olson said. He then claimed his words were for the edification of the people that I was preaching to. As a judge sitting here today, my obligation is to apply the rule of law.Kennedy shot back, My obligation is to try to understand you, cause this is a lifetime appointment. Do you believe that fornication is a form of sexual perversion? Olson explained that by fornication, he meant any sex act outside of marriage, but continued to resist sharing his personal beliefs and instead emphasized he was merely preaching the doctrine of his church. He also asked about a 2015 speech in which Olson discussed a passage in the Bible that says wives should be subservient to their husbands. Kennedy asked if Olson believed that. I believe every word of the Bible, he said. Earlier, Kennedy also asked him to explain a sermon in which he spoke about marriage not being intended for people with disabilities. Again stumbling over his words, he claimed he was explaining why certain people are called to singleness and not why people shouldnt get married if they want to. I was using that example as an illustration of why some dont get married, not as a kind of reason why someone shouldnt, he said. Sen. John Kennedy: "What do you mean by fornication?"Justin Olson: "Any sexual act outside of the bounds of marriage."Kennedy: "So you believe premarital sex is a sexual perversion?"Olson: "Senator, again, my personal views, as many have said before, I won't comment" pic.twitter.com/qt8dJaHi1D Forbes Breaking News (@ForbesTVNews) December 17, 2025In a social media post announcing Olsons nomination, the president touted Olsons fight against trans athletes, saying that, as a litigator, [Olson] has been fighting tirelessly to keep men out of womens sports.Olson is a lead lawyer in an anti-trans lawsuit financed by ICONS representing three former University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) women swimmers who sued UPenn, Harvard University, the Ivy League (an athletic conference of eight private universities, including UPenn and Harvard), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).The lawsuit alleges that the universities and NCAA violated Title IX, the federal law prohibiting sex-based educational discrimination, by allowing trans swimmer Lia Thomas to compete on UPenns womens swim team during 2021 and 2022,Daily Journalreported, something which left the plaintiffs repeatedly emotionally traumatized. The suit seeks a total ban on trans female athletes citing opportunities lost and taken from trans women who allegedly displaced cis women unfairly.Olson is also an attorney in ICONS lawsuit against San Jose State University (SJSU) and the Mountain West Conference for allowing a trans volleyball player toparticipate in collegiate matches. The player who participated for three seasons without any issues over her participation didnt cause any unfair advantage or injuries, but the lawsuit claims her presence still stifled other female athletes free speech.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews -
WWW.THETREVORPROJECT.ORGThe Trevor Project Condemns Federal Government Efforts to Restrict Health Care for Transgender YouthResearch shows that access to transition-related care is associated with significantly lower rates of depression and suicide risk among transgender and nonbinary young peopleDecember 18, 2025 The United States federal government is considering multiple efforts to restrict access to best-practice health care for transgender and nonbinary young people nationwide, including through legislative action in Congress, and proposed rules from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Trevor Projects Senior Vice President of Public Engagement Campaigns, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen (he/him), released the following statement in response:Everyone in this country should have access to the care they need to stay healthy, including transgender and nonbinary young people. Personal medical decisions ought to be made between patients, their doctors, and their families not through a one-size-fits-all mandate from the federal government. The multitude of efforts we are seeing from federal legislators to strip transgender and nonbinary youth of the health care they need is deeply troubling. If implemented, these efforts will have detrimental impacts on transgender and nonbinary youth in particular. The Trevor Projects research shows that access to this care is associated with significantly lower rates of depression and suicide risk among transgender and nonbinary young people who receive it. Its no hyperbole to say that restricting this medically necessary care risks the lives of transgender and nonbinary youth in communities all across the U.S.If youve never met a transgender person, or arent familiar with the type of health care that some of us receive, its understandable to have questions. Its reassuring to know that this type of care is nothing new; it has been provided for decades, based on scientific research and supported by all of our countrys leading medical and mental health associations.
