Dwayne Johnson Intrigued After Learning About Special Trophy For Good Actors
LOS ANGELESLeaning forward in his seat as a number of questions raced through his mind, Dwayne Johnson was reportedly intrigued Monday after learning there was a special trophy for good actors.Huh, interestingand you said they give them out every year? asked Johnson, who frowned as he racked his brain in an attempt to recall if any of the orange blimps, WWE belts, or other assorted awards on display in his study had been given to him by the academy his dinner companions had mentioned. So the statue is a man, but do you have to be a man to earn one? No? I see, I see. Well, how good of an actor do you have to be? Really good, or just good-good? Is there a certain movie you need to be in?At press time, reports confirmed the veteran pro wrestler was even more confused after being told that sometimes an actor didnt even need to be good to receive one.The post Dwayne Johnson Intrigued After Learning About Special Trophy For Good Actors appeared first on The Onion.

Health Experts Warn Americans Not Sensually Eating Enough Fruit
CHICAGOCalling attention to the startling lack of tied-up cherry stems in the average diet, health experts from the American Medical Association warned Tuesday that Americans were not sensually eating enough fruit. While its recommended that adults erotically suck on at least two pieces of fruit daily, many people are falling far short of that, said Dr. Logan Toledano, emphasizing how essential it is for overall health and well-being to sumptuously lick a strawberry in a slow, circular motion before taking a big, wet bite. Over the past 20 years, weve seen a marked decline in the amount of peach juice dripping down cleavage. While some might prefer to run their tongue up and down a melting ice cream cone or eat sushi off a bare stomach, theres simply no replacement for moaning with tantalizing pleasure while eating grapes.Toledano added that Americans could easily introduce more succulent fruit into their diet by deep-throating a banana. The post Health Experts Warn Americans Not Sensually Eating Enough Fruit appeared first on The Onion.

EU lawmakers vote to hold up Mercosur trade agreement over legal concerns
A protestor wears a shirt which reads "Mercosur-danger on our dinner plate" as he participates in a demonstration against the EU-Mercusor trade agreement, outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg, eastern France, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026. (AP Photo/Pascal Bastien)2026-01-21T12:31:18Z BRUSSELS (AP) European Union lawmakers on Wednesday voted to hold up ratification of a major free trade agreement with the Mercosur group of South American countries over concerns about the legality of the deal.In a vote in Strasbourg, France, lawmakers narrowly approved sending the EU-Mercosur agreement to Europes top court to rule on whether it is in line with the blocs treaties. The result was 334 votes in favor to 324 against, with 11 abstentions. The assembly cannot vote to approve the pact until the European Court of Justice has ruled, and this could take months. The long sought-after free trade agreement was signed into effect on Saturday. Twenty-five years in the making, it aimed to strengthen commercial ties in the face of rising protectionism and trade tensions around the world. The deal was seen as a central priority of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who shepherded it through a key vote on Jan. 9 among the EUs 27 leaders. The more trading partners we have world-wide, the more independent we are, von der Leyen said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, pointing to Mercosur and another trade deal in the works with India. Supported by South Americas cattle-raising countries and European industrial interests, the accord is aimed at gradually eliminating more than 90% of tariffs on goods ranging from Argentine beef to German cars, creating one of the worlds largest free trade zones and making shopping cheaper for more than 700 million consumers. France, Europes major agricultural producer, wanted stronger protections for farmers and has sought to delay the pact. Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot welcomed the parliaments vote, saying in a social media post that the assembly expressed itself in line with the position that we have defended. France takes responsibility for saying no when it has to, and history often proves it right. The fight continues. The European Commission said that it strongly regrets the parliaments decision. However, the EUs powerful executive branch can provisionally apply the deal until then. EU leaders are expected to discuss the way ahead at an emergency summit focused on transatlantic relations on Thursday. In a post on social media, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the EU parliaments decision as regrettable. It misjudges the geopolitical situation. We are convinced of the legality of the agreement. No further delays. The agreement must now be applied provisionally, Merz wrote.Bernd Lange, head of the parliaments committee on trade, said the vote was absolutely irresponsible and very harmful for our economic interests. Opponents should simply vote against ratification instead of using delaying tactics under the guise of legal review, he wrote on X.Ratification is considered all but guaranteed in South America, where the agreement has broad support.Mercosur consists of the regions two biggest economies, Argentina and Brazil, as well as Paraguay and Uruguay. Bolivia, the blocs newest member, is not included the trade deal, but could join in the coming years. Venezuela has been suspended from the bloc and is not included in the agreement.-AP writers Sam McNeil in Brussels and David McHugh in Frankfurt, Germany contributed. HAM Radio Operators in Belarus Arrested, Face the Death Penalty
The Belarusian government is threatening three HAM radio operators with the death penalty, detained at least seven people, and has accused them of intercepting state secrets, according to Belarusian state media, independent media outside of Belarus, and the Belarusian human rights organization Viasna. The arrests are an extreme attack on what is most often a wholesome hobby that has a history of being vilified by authoritarian governments in part because the technology is quite censorship resistant. The detentions were announced last week on Belarusian state TV, which claimed the men were part of a network of more than 50 people participating in the amateur radio hobby and have been accused of both espionage and treason. Authorities there said they seized more than 500 pieces of radio equipment. The men were accused on state TV of using radio to spy on the movement of government planes, though no actual evidence of this has been produced.State TV claimed they were associated with the Belarusian Federation of Radioamateurs and Radiosportsmen (BFRR), a long-running amateur radio club and nonprofit that holds amateur radio competitions, meetups, trainings, and forums. WhatsApp and email requests to the BFRR from 404 Media were not returned. On Reddit, Siarhei Besarab, a Belarusian HAM radio operator, posted a plea for support from others in the hobby: MAYDAY from Belarus: Licensed operators facing death penalty.I am writing this because my local community is being systematically liquidated in what I can only describe as a targeted intellectual genocide, Besarab wrote. They have detained over 50 licensed people, including callsigns EW1ABT, EW1AEH, and EW1ACE. These men were paraded on state television like war criminals and were coerced to publicly repent for the "crime" of technical curiosity. Propagandists presented the Belarusian Federation of Radioamateurs and Radiosportsmen (BFRR) as a front for a massive spy network.State propaganda unironically claims these men were pumping state secrets out of the air using nothing more than basic $25 Baofeng handhelds and consumer-grade SDR dongles, he added. Any operator knows that hardware like this is physically incapable of cracking the modern AES-256 digital encryption used by government security forces. It is a technical fraud, yet they are being charged with High Treason and Espionage. The punishment in Belarus for these charges is life in prison or the death penalty. The Belarusian human rights group Viasna and its associated Telegram channel confirmed the detention and said that it spoke to a cellmate of Andrei Repetsi, who said that Repetsi was unable to talk about his case in jail: The case is secret, so Andrei never told the essence of the case in the cell. He joked that his personal file was marked Top secret. Burn before reading, Viasna wrote. Most HAMs operate amateur radios for fun, as part of competitions, or to keep in touch with other HAMs around the world. But the hobby has a long history of being attacked by governments in part because it is resistant to censorship. Amateur radio often works even if a natural disaster or political action takes down internet, cell, and phone services, so it is popular among people interested in search and rescue and doomsday prepping. Amateur radio has been used to share information out of Cuba, for example, and in 2021 the Cuban government jammed HAM radio frequencies during anti-government protests there.

US military transfers the first 150 Islamic State group detainees from Syria to Iraq
Syrian government troops stand guard at the entrance to the al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria's Hasakeh province, Syria, Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, after the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). (AP Photo/Ghaith Alsayed)2026-01-21T10:27:13Z AL-HOL, Syria (AP) The U.S. military said Wednesday it began transferring detainees from the Islamic State group who were held in northeastern Syria to Iraq to ensure they remain in secure facilities. The move came after Syrian government forces took control of a sprawling camp housing thousands of IS detainees following the withdrawal of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces as part of a ceasefire with the Kurdish fighters. The SDF still controls more than a dozen detention facilities with some 9,000 IS members.U.S. Central Command said the transfer began on Wednesday and so far 150 IS members have been taken from Syrias northeastern province of Hassakeh to secure locations in Iraq. Ultimately, up to 7,000 ISIS detainees could be transferred from Syria to Iraqi-controlled facilities, the statement said, using a term to refer to the IS. A convoy of armored vehicles with government forces moved into the al-Hol camp Wednesday following two weeks of clashes with the SDF, which appeared closer to merging into the Syrian military, in accordance with government demands. At its peak in 2019, some 73,000 people were living at al-Hol camp. Their number has since declined with some countries repatriating their citizens. The camp is still home to some 24,000, most of them women and children linked to the IS. They include about 14,500 Syrians and nearly 3,000 Iraqis. Some 6,500 others, many of them loyal IS supporters who came from around the world to join the extremist group, are separately held in a highly secured section of the camp. There have been reports that some families fled during the chaos but there has been no official confirmation. Families of IS militants plead to return home An Associated Press journalist visited the camp Wednesday as scores of soldiers guarded the main entrance.Go inside and see the chaos that is happening. There are no clinics, no running water, no bread and no vegetables, an Iraqi woman living in the camp said, after SDF fighters left the area. The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns, called on the Iraqi government to repatriate her. Another Iraqi woman, who also refused to give her full name out of fear of reprisal, told The Associated Press that her brother and uncle were held in jails in northeast Syria and called on authorities to release them so that she can all return home. The Syrian government and the SDF announced a new four-day truce on late Tuesday, after a previous ceasefire broke down. Northeast Syria was relatively calm on Wednesday. A drone attack killed seven soldiers and wounded 20 while they were inspecting a weapons depot abandoned by SDF fighters in the northeastern town of Yaaroubiyeh, the Defense Ministry said, blaming the Kurdish forces. The SDF in a statement denied it, saying the blast was triggered by soldiers moving the ammunition. Kurdish fighters still in control of prisons with IS detainees The SDF and the government traded blame over the escape Monday of IS members from a prison in the northeastern town of Shaddadeh. Many of the detainees were recaptured by government troops who took control of the jail, state media reported.Under a deal announced Sunday, government forces were to take over the control of the prisons but the transfer did not go smoothly. The largest detention facility, Gweiran Prison, now called Panorama, has held about 4,500 IS-linked detainees and still was in the SDF hands. Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Hassan Abdul-Ghani said in televised comments Tuesday night that the government was and still is in direct confrontation with the IS. He added that authorities are ready to take over prisons with IS members. The IS was defeated in Iraq in 2017, and in Syria two years later, but the groups sleeper cells still carry out deadly attacks in both countries. The SDF played a major role in defeating the IS.Tom Barrack, the U.S. envoy to Syria, said in a statement Tuesday that the SDFs role as the primary anti-IS force has largely expired, as Damascus is now both willing and positioned to take over security responsibilities. He added that the recent developments show the U.S. actively facilitating this transition, rather than prolonging a separate SDF role.

Indonesian handprints are the oldest cave art found yet
This undated image provided by Maxime Aubert shows handprints with sharpened fingertips in the Maros region of Sulawesi, Indonesia. (Ahdi Agus Oktaviana/Maxime Aubert via AP)2026-01-21T16:08:47Z NEW YORK (AP) Handprints on cave walls in a largely unexplored area of Indonesia may be the oldest rock art studied so far, dating back to at least 67,800 years ago.The tan-colored prints analyzed by Indonesian and Australian researchers on the island of Sulawesi were made by blowing pigment over hands placed against the cave walls, leaving an outline. Some of the fingertips were also tweaked to look more pointed. This prehistoric art form suggests the Indonesian island was home to a flourishing artistic culture. To figure out how old the paintings were, researchers dated mineral crusts that had formed on top of the art. Upon seeing the new study, independent paleoanthropologist Genevieve von Petzinger said she let out a little squeal of joy. It fits everything Id been thinking, she said.Indonesia is known to host some of the worlds earliest cave drawings, and scientists have analyzed countless examples of ancient art across the globe including simple marks on bones and stones that go back hundreds of thousands of years. Cross-hatched markings on a piece of rock in South Africa have been dated to about 73,000 years ago. The new art from southeastern Sulawesi is the oldest to be found on cave walls. The stencils also represent a more complex tradition of rock art that could have been a shared cultural practice, said study author Maxime Aubert with Griffith University, who published the study Wednesday in the journal Nature. Scientists are eager to understand when early humans learned to make art, moving from dots and lines to more meaningful representations of themselves and the world around them. These cave drawings help firm up a timeline for the dawn of human creativity. Its not yet clear whose hands made the prints. They could be from an ancient human group called Denisovans who lived in the area and may have interacted with our Homo sapiens ancestors before eventually going extinct. Or they may belong to modern humans venturing away from Africa, who could have wandered through the Middle East and Australia around this time. Fine details on the cave art, including the intentionally modified fingertips, point to a human hand. Other drawings discovered in the same area of the island, including a human figure, a bird and horse-like animals were found to be created much more recently, some of them about 4,000 years ago.Theres likely more art to be found on nearby islands that could be even older than the handprints. Future studies may help scientists understand how these artistic traditions spread across the globe and how theyre woven into the fabric of humanitys early days. For us, this discovery is not the end of the story, Aubert said in an email. It is an invitation to keep looking.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Judge rules against lawmakers pressing for monitor to ensure release of Epstein files
Documents that were included in the U.S. Department of Justice release of the Jeffrey Epstein files are photographed Friday, Jan. 2, 2026. (AP Photo/Jon Elswick)2026-01-21T17:07:24Z NEW YORK (AP) A judge overseeing Ghislaine Maxwells criminal case said Wednesday that two members of Congress lacked the legal right to intervene and press their demand for a court-appointed observer to ensure the government complies with a new law ordering release of its files on Jeffrey Epstein. But the lawmakers are free to bring a civil lawsuit or work through the tools they have in Congress to improve oversight, U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer ruled.U.S. Reps. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky., had co-sponsored the Epstein Files Transparency Act that was signed into law by President Donald Trump in November. It required the public disclosure of files related to the sex trafficking investigations into Epstein, the late financier, and Maxwell, his longtime confidant. Engelmayer largely agreed with the Justice Departments insistence that he had no authority to grant the congressmens request to speed the release of that material. They had urged Engelmayer to name an independent monitor to ensure that the government immediately released the more than 2 million documents it has identified as investigative materials. Khanna and Massie said the slow disclosure of the documents violated the law and had caused serious trauma to survivors. A month after the deadline had passed for the materials to be made public, only about 12,000 documents have been made public. The department has said the release of the files was delayed by redactions required to protect the identities of those who were abused. Engelmayer said the questions raised by Khanna and Massie raised about whether the department was complying with the law were undeniably important and timely. But, he said, the way in which the members of Congress were trying to intervene was not permitted. Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel. Follow on The judge, who inherited Maxwells case after the trial judge was appointed to an appeals court, ruled that has no authority to supervise the departments compliance with the new law, and that Massie and Khanna have no standing, or legal right, to insinuate themselves into Maxwells case. Engelmayer said he has received letters and emails from Epstein abuse survivors in support of the lawmakers request for appointment of a neutral overseer. These express concern that DOJ otherwise will not comply with the Act, wrote the judge, who was nominated by Democratic President Barack Obama. The department has been paying lip service to the victims and failing to treat us with the solicitude we deserve, survivors wrote, according to Engelmayer.Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence after her December 2021 sex trafficking conviction. She recently petitioned the federal court for her release, maintaining that new information has emerged that warrants her release. A jury found that she had helped to recruit girls for Epstein to abuse over the past quarter-century and had also participated in some of the abuse.Epstein died in a federal jail in New York in August 2019 as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges. The death was ruled a suicide. MICHAEL R. SISAK Sisak is an Associated Press reporter covering law enforcement, courts and prisons. He is based in New York. twitter mailto
