THEONION.COMGeneva Open Introduces Ice CourtsGENEVASaying frost-covered courts heralded a new direction for the sport, officials from the Geneva Open defended Monday their decision to hold a tennis tournament on ice.The state-of-the-art ice courts at the Tennis Club de Genve will allow for more strategic play as athletes try to avoid slipping and falling while serving, returning, or even just walking to their bench before the match, grounds manager Sofia Blaser said of the 250-level event, which failed to crown a winner after nearly 100 singles and doubles players were sidelined by injuries suffered during the tournament.Since we are the only facility in the world currently using this surface, it is only natural that athletes will take some time to adjust to the slippery, below-freezing conditions necessary to maintain the ice, she continued. Its similar to players learning to slide on clay, except in this case they keep sliding until they eventually slam into a fixed part of the stadium, which breaks their momentum. Theyre also not used to the way the ice makes the ball wet, heavy, and freezing to the touch, but they will be in time. Ahead of next year, well be doubling our fleet of Zambonis, outfitting the ball kids with spiked shoes, and allowing the players extra time between points to blow-dry the ball.At press time, Norwegian Casper Ruud was already being hailed as an ice court specialist based solely on his time spent in the Scandinavian tundra. The post Geneva Open Introduces Ice Courts appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 11 Views 0 Reviews

THEONION.COMScientists No Closer To Uncovering Where Friend Finds These BozosMADISON, WIWarning that each new iteration of dummy seems to be more witless than the last, a team of scientists at the University of Wisconsin stated Monday that they were no closer to uncovering where their friend Lisa Pullman finds these bozos. Despite years of extensive research, we still lack even a rudimentary understanding of how Lisa meets these absolute duds, said Professor Robert Sforza, who coined the term circus paradox to describe what he calls the never-ending clown car of idiots, losers, and sociopaths his friend keeps bringing around. Shes attractive and generally well-liked, which makes it difficult for us to determine where in the world shes finding these bizarre specimens. Weve searched for a pattern, but theres simply no way to predict what kind of crazy weirdo Lisa is going to bring with her when our group of friends goes out. She claims she met the last guy in line at the Home Depot, which is, like, come on girl. She brought him to a dinner party, and we think he stole some of the silverware. Sforza added that without more support from the scientific community, he fears the question may not be solved in Pullmans lifetime. The post Scientists No Closer To Uncovering Where Friend Finds These Bozos appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 11 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMDonald Trump brutally mocked for calling Japans prime minister Mr. JapanWhile explaining (poorly) how tariffs work, Donald Trump called Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba Mr. Japan. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPete Hegseth announces who will be replacing Harvey Milk as boats nameDefense Secretary and former Fox host Pete Hegseth said several weeks ago that the Navy supply vessel formerly known as the USNS Harvey Milk would get a new name because Milk was a gay civil rights leader. And he just announced the new name on social media.I am pleased to announce that the United States Navy is renaming the USNS Harvey Milk to the USNS Oscar V. Peterson, Hegseth wrote on X. We are taking the politics out of ship naming. Related Out lawmakers grill Pete Hegseth over decision to remove Harvey Milks name from Navy ship Democrats have called the removal cruel, unnecessary. and a waste of valuable time and resources. He is also known for his Hope Speech, where he implored a crowd during Pride in 1978 to come out to everyone they knew to fight the conspiracy of silence. He also served in the U.S. Navy as a diving officer on a submarine rescue ship during the Korean War. He was forced out of the military with a less-than-honorable discharge, facing court-martial because he was gay. He left with the rank of lieutenant junior grade. In 2016, the Navy announced that several new ships would be named after civil rights leaders, including one after Milk and others after leaders like suffragist Lucy Stone, abolitionist Sojourner Truth, racial justice champion John Lewis, Latina labor activist Dolores Huerta, womens rights suffragette Lucy Stone, Latino civil rights organizer Cesar Chavez, and Black soldier and civil rights activist Medgar Evers. This past June, nearly a decade later, Hegseth ordered those ships to be renamed because of the administrations opposition to diversity and civil rights. The ship will now be named for Oscar V. Peterson, a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of the Coral Sea during World War II. Peterson was a white man who was married to a woman and did not identify publicly as LGBTQ+.Like so many LGBTQ+ service members of his generation, [Milk] faced discrimination from the very institutions he served with loyalty and courage, the group VoteVets said in a statement last month. To erase his name now during Pride Month is no innocent bureaucratic decision. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMSCOTUS will soon hear a conversion therapy case. Queer kids need us to fight for them.Growing up as a queer kid in 1990s southeast Missouri was an experience marked by confusion, fear, and isolation. LGBTQ+ individuals were referred to as sinful and unnatural, and they were to be avoided at all costs. I prayed fervently for God to remove my feelings of same-sex attraction. I even joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, hoping that righteous devotion would fix me. Unfortunately, that chapter ended in deeper self-loathing, so I turned to silence and seclusion, shielding myself from friends and family to hide the truth. Eventually, I moved away from organized religion, joined the military, and began the slow, painful work of discovering who I was. Years later, I can finally say Im happy and, more importantly, at peace with myself. Related Conversion therapy group holds rally at California State Capitol to oppose LGBTQ lifestyle The Changed Movement is the new Exodus International. But now, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has decided to hear Chiles v. Salazar a case that could overturn state bans on conversion therapy for minors and my childhood fears are reignited. I am afraid not for myself, but for todays queer youth, who deserve so much better. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Conversion therapy refers to tactics employed by religious or medical practitioners to cure someones queer sexual orientation or gender identity. These range from talk therapies (like pastoral counseling and/or promoting celibacy) to horrific physical methods like corrective rape, sexual assault, and/or electric shocks. Major medical societies like the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, and others have condemned the practice for not only being ineffective, but for being actively harmful. Nevertheless, a 2019 report by the Williams Institute estimated that nearly 700,000 LGBTQ+ adults in the US received such treatment, half of them as adolescents. In addition to increased rates of depression, self-hatred, sexual dysfunction, social isolation, and substance use, conversion therapy is also associated with higher rates of suicidal behavior. In fact, a 2024 Trevor Project report stated that 27% of queer youth that attempted suicide in the last year had previously endured conversion therapy. I remember my first contact with a failed conversion therapy patient while I was serving as a junior Air Force medic. It was a transgender adolescent (maybe 12 or 13) who attempted to castrate themselves with a kitchen knife. The father was adamant that the first therapist had failed, the child was acting out, and more conversion therapy with a new therapist was the remedy. The provider I worked for gently introduced the idea of gender-affirming care, but the dad refused. Ultimately, the child was referred for more conversion therapy. I thought back to when I was their age and trying to reconcile my sexuality, wishing I had been born a boy so it would be ok to be attracted to girls. Id love to say I drew on my lived experience to advocate fiercely for that kid, but I didnt. I enlisted during Dont Ask, Dont Tell, when known homosexual members of the military were involuntarily discharged. I chose silence and self-preservation over taking too bold a stance on queer rights. At the heart of Chiles v. Salazar is a First Amendment argument for free speech. Plaintiff Kaley Chiles argues that Colorados ban on conversion therapy violates her rights as a counselor by censoring private conversations between counselors and their clients, clients who have expressed a desire to align their gender identity and/or sexual orientation with their religious beliefs.. Chiles is represented by the anti-LGBTQ+ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom. As the Colorado law stands, mental health providers like Chiles risk hefty fines and/or loss of their professional licenses if they engage in conversion therapy.Indeed, the value of free speech and the dangers of excessive government interference cannot be overstated, particularly with what should be confidential patient-provider exchanges. However, Chiles confuses free speech with the regulation of professional conduct. Laws banning conversion therapy across the US do not silence religious or personal beliefs; they protect children from debunked and dangerous treatments masquerading as legitimate therapy. Being LGBTQ+ is not a disorder. It is certainly not something that can or should be cured.SCOTUS has a choice: condemn a discredited practice or stamp it with constitutional protection. We also have a choice: remain silent or raise the alarm. I say speak up. Be visible, take up space, and be your beautiful, authentic self. Educate yourself and those around you on the consequences of this decision. Partner with local LGBTQ+ organizations on advocacy efforts. Most importantly, love yourself and the queer kids around you. Whether you see them or not, I promise theyre there. And theyre looking at you.Lauren Everett is originally from rural Missouri and spent 16 years on active duty in the Air Force before starting medical school. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMGOP bill would ban gender-affirming care for veterans in broader effort to worsen VA health careThe Congressional Equality Caucus (CEC) slammed House Republicans for passing a military spending bill that would prevent veterans from receiving gender-affirming care. The House passed the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act in a vote of 218 to 206, with 216 Republicans and 2 Democrats voting in favor and 206 Democrats voting against it. The Democrats who voted in favor of the bill were Rep. Jared Golden of Maine and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington. Related VA doctors can deny care to Democrats, unmarried veterans under new rule The disturbing and unethical new policy is expected to impact women and LGBTQ+ veterans most. The 94-page bill states plainly that none of the funds made available by this Act may be used for surgical procedures or hormone therapies for the purposes of gender affirming care. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Instead of prioritizing the needs of our nations veterans, Republicans in Congress used this appropriations bill to take another swing at transgender veterans, gay Rep. Mark Takano, CEC chair and ranking member of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, said in a statement.Takano explained that the administration has already rescinded a policy that ensured transgender veterans could receive healthcare without facing discrimination and announced they were phasing out trans veterans treatments for gender dysphoria.Republicans are not only working to permanently codify this ban on medically necessary care for trans veterans, but also expand it with this bill, he said. This is part of a broader effort to worsen the quality of care veterans receive. The Congressional Equality Caucus strongly condemns this bill and remains committed to keeping its anti-LGBTQI+ provisions from becoming law.The bill comes after the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently rescinded a February 2013 directive requiring it to provide clinically appropriate care (including preferred names andpronouns) to transgender and intersex veterans. The directive said trans vets who were currently receiving hormone therapy could continue to do so, but it forbade any new vets from receiving the same treatment. In response, Takano and 68 other Democratic members of Congress signed a letterto VA Secretary Doug Collins calling the new policy an affront to transgender veterans.Your decision to pit veterans against each other is also shameful, the letter continues. Your position requires you to support all veterans, regardless of their identity or medical needs. Your attempt to portray cutting off medical care to some veterans as an action to support other veterans is especially hypocritical, after VA has attempted to fire thousands of employees, many of them veterans themselves, that support the needs of all members of the veteran community. Additionally, the VA has stopped allowing trans veterans access to single-sex facilities, like restrooms, that match their gender identity. VA employees have also been told to remove trans-affirming materials, any mentions of gender identity from veteran health records, and even Pride flags. These actions intentionally create an environment that is unnecessarily hostile toward transgender veterans, which will undermine efforts to provide these veterans with the services and care they need, the letter adds. The letter asks for Collins to rescind the new policy on gender-affirming care and to answer questions about the costs of the departments gender-affirming medical care, whether the VA consulted medical professionals before changing its policies, how the VA will enforce its anti-trans restroom ban, and what the VA is doing to support trans veterans mental health and wellbeing in light of its other recent anti-trans actions.Another massive budget bill, named by Republicans as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), would take health care away from many trans people in its current form. The version passed last month by the House bans on Medicaid and CHIP paying for gender-affirming care for transgender people and also banned policies sold in health care exchanges established by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) from covering gender-affirming care. But the Senate parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, ruled last week that these three measures violated the Byrd Rule, which only allows budget measures to pass under reconciliation,Axiosreports. This means that the Senate will need to secure the support of at least seven Democrats to pass the bill with these measures included.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 9 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMElliot Page seemingly hard launches his new girlfriend on InstagramElliot Page closed out Pride weekend with an Instagram post that needed only two emojis to make his point. In the photo, Page and Overcompensating actress and comic Julia Shiplett leaning into each other in matching dark jackets and sunglasses, the pavement beneath them painted in vivid rainbow stripes, was captioned simply with a rainbow and a double heart emoji. Within minutes, everyone had the same takeaway: the Umbrella Academy star just hard-launched his first public relationship since transitioning in 2020.For Page, 38, the reveal marks a new public chapter after several very private ones. He came out as transgender in December 2020, divorced dancer Emma Portner five months later, and wrote candidly in his 2023 memoir Pageboy about past relationships with Kate Mara, Olivia Thirlby, and an unnamed closeted actress. Last summer, he told the Los Angeles Times that post-transition dating felt the most fun Ive ever had, crediting a newfound ease in his body for deeper connections. Saturdays grin seems to prove it.See on InstagramShiplett, best known for her dry-as-dust turns in Prime Videos queer rom-com Overcompensating and cult favorites High Maintenance and Love Life, seemingly confirmed the news in equally word-sparse fashion. Her Instagram Story showed Page standing shirtless in a steaming hot spring, the caption reading, Happy prideee . (@) Shiplett, 38, has also built a stand-up following by skewering bisexual panic, awkward hookups, and millennial ennuimaterial that dovetails neatly with Pages dry humor. The pair has so far kept specifics offline, and representatives for both declined to comment. Still, the timing of the post on Prides final weekend reads like a deliberate love letter to the community that has championed Pages journey from Juno breakout to trans icon.Until we see them on a red carpet or trading giggles in someone elses selfie, that single rainbow road will have to suffice. But for now, Pride 2025 ends with a reminder that queer joy and a well-placed emoji can light up an entire feed.0 Comments 0 Shares 10 Views 0 Reviews

NEWSISOUT.COMGay Mens Health Crisis showed how everyday people stepped up when institutions failed during the height of the AIDS epidemic providing a model fortodayThe story of the AIDS movement is one of regular people: students, bartenders, stay-at-home mothers, teachers, retired lawyers, immigrants, Catholic nuns, newly out gay men who had just arrived in New York, and many others. Some had lost friends or lovers. Some felt a moral calling. Some were just trying to balance their sexual karma. Many were angry. Most had no medical background or professional credentials just a sense of urgency, tenacity and an unwillingness to look away. When Gay Mens Health Crisis, the worlds first AIDS service organization, was founded in 1982, it was regular people trying to meet the needs of all people living with AIDS. Its workforce of volunteers provided HIV prevention education as well as physical, emotional and legal support. At the start of the epidemic, AIDS was considered a gay plague, and to be openly queer was to risk abandonment, eviction, assault or worse. Families disowned their children. Hospitals turned patients away. Funeral homes refused bodies. And many people with AIDS found themselves alone and in need.Public officials didnt just fail to act they refused to acknowledge that anything was happening at all. Elected leaders such as President Ronald Reagan and Sen. Jesse Helms stoked the moral panic guiding public policy by declaring people with AIDS perverted human being(s).In 2025, with the Trump administration cutting federal funding for HIV research and support services and restricting protections and services for LGBTQ+ people, studying how everyday people approached the early AIDS crisis provides a model for surviving through innovation, commitment and community.Stories informing the presentI think 26,000 people died before (Reagan) even bothered to utter the word AIDS, said Tim Sweeney, former executive director of Gay Mens Health Crisis. This quote is featured in the GMHC Stories Oral History Project, a collection of over 100 interviews with former volunteers, staff and donors from the first 15 years of the organization. Along with our colleague Julia Haager, we and our team at Binghamton Universitys Human Sexualities Lab compiled these interviews. Acquired by the Manuscripts and Archives Division of The New York Public Library, the collection is scheduled to open in fall 2025, showcasing how everyday people responded to the AIDS crisis. These stories document how a community presented with a set of circumstances threatening their very existence built a self-sustaining organization to advocate for and provide care to each other outside institutional support. They did this while enduring grief, standing up to external threats and navigating internal tensions. The GMHC stood up for the community when other institutions would not. Sean Massey, CC BY-NDImprovisation for survivalThe work was an ongoing challenge. Organizations dedicated to aiding people affected by AIDS such as Gay Mens Health Crisis were left to fund their own survival and defend their right to do the work. When North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms moved in 1988 to eliminate federal support for AIDS service programs that mentioned homosexuality, it severely limited AIDS prevention efforts nation wide. However, GMHC had the foresight to fund its more explicit education materials with private donations. At the beginning of the epidemic, queer New Yorkers and their allies had to improvise new systems of care in the absence of state and federal support. People often (ask) me, what was the model you worked off of? said Sweeney. And I said, there was no model, there was just a muddle. We just made it up the whole time. What they created almost overnight was staggering. There were over 1,000 volunteers in the agency, recalled staff member Tom Weber, who started at GMHC as an office volunteer in 1988. We would have orientations every single week, and they would flood in.One of the most well-known expressions of that volunteer labor was the buddy program, where lay caregivers provided emotional and practical support to people living with AIDS. A lot of people were not alone in their death because of the work that we did, said Barbara Danish, who led the buddy program from 1996 to 2002.Education and prevention were also grounded in queer culture and community. Unlike early depictions of AIDS in the media that reduced patients to vectors of transmission, it was defiantly sex-positive. We came up with shit that no one in the world had ever done, Sweeney said. Because finally it was gay men saying were going to talk to each other about how to stay safe, healthy and sexy. When that sense of mission extended to emotional survival, humor and unapologetically queer culture were critical to bearing the weight of the work. Sometimes you just break down and cry for an hour. But thats how you survive it by staying authentic to your emotions, said Tommy Thomson, former director of client programs. She recalled how staff member Carolotta, or Carl, would sometimes put condoms and chocolate in a basket and go from office to office, frequently in drag. He would offer either or both to make people feel better. Hed make you remember that you werent alone, and that we all know how hard it is. Thats part of what held you together.Internal tensionsAlthough Gay Mens Health Crisis remained mission-driven, its internal politics were never simple. As it grew in size and national stature, it confronted the limits of its founding identity.Founded by, and initially serving, primarily white gay men, GMHC sometimes struggled to adapt to the emerging realities of the epidemic. While AIDS also affected people of color, women and intravenous drug users from the outset, much of the agencys early prevention and outreach work was designed with gay men in mind.By the late 1980s, the increase in AIDS cases among white gay men had begun to plateau, while rates among Black and Latino people, women and IV drug users continued to rise sharply into the next decade. Women and people of color who were deeply embedded in GMHCs operations nonetheless had to navigate assumptions about whose needs were prioritized assumptions that often manifested in how resources were allocated and services were designed. As GMHC expanded its outreach to Black and Latino populations, it struggled to be culturally responsive and build trust in communities that had long been underserved and stigmatized. https://www.youtube.com/embed/fZisPwOjOw0?wmode=transparent&start=0 Racial disparities in HIV persist. As GMHC grew, it became more and more successful in fundraising and visibility, while smaller organizations sometimes struggled to access resources. This led to growing tensions, particularly in communities of color, where local groups feared that GMHCs expansion would limit funding and undercut their efforts at community-specific approaches to care and prevention. In addition, efforts to address racism, sexism and cultural insensitivity encountered both support and indifference.Yet, staff and volunteers continued to push reshaping messaging, fighting for inclusive programming, and holding conversations about race, gender, power and public health. For staff and volunteers, the agency was a complicated institution that could both empower and marginalize. Its strength, and its struggle, was learning how to expand without losing sight of the legacy and history it was built on.A guide for todayForty years later, LGBTQ+ people face a new set of crises in a landscape riddled with dangers.Trans health care is being banned in multiple states. Book bans and surveillance laws are targeting queer youth. Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric is fueling violence and censorship. Funding for HIV prevention and research is disappearing even as new infections persist. Black and brown communities still face disproportionate barriers to health care and housing. Decades of scientific progress and medical discoveries are coming to a halt with funding cuts under the Trump administration. And yet many of the same questions and challenges remain: Who gets left behind when public health systems collapse under political pressure or moral panic? Who will do the work when institutions fail? What does it mean to care for one another in the midst of the wreckage? How do people come together across differences? The history of GMHC is more than memory it is a lesson in the possibility of care, creativity and community, especially in the face of fear and uncertainty today. It shows how people can come together not just to demand policy change, but to directly meet one anothers needs with whatever resources they have. It is a reminder that mutual aid is powerful; that grief can coexist with joy; and that queer resilience has always included laughter, desire and shared vulnerability. In a time of renewed political backlash and public health failures, GMHCs story is more than history its a guide. Today, the staff and volunteers at GMHC continue their work to confront the epidemic and uplift the lives of all people affected by AIDS.Wed say to them, Youre just ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things, Sweeney said. And we really meant that.Sean G. Massey, Associate Professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Binghamton University, State University of New York; Casey W. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMLGBTQ+ police officers protest Pride in NYC because they werent allowed to bring their gunsMembers of an LGBTQ+ police organization protested New York Citys annual Pride March on Sunday after they were barred from participating with their service weapons.Heritage of Pride (HoP), the organization behind the citys official Pride festivities, has banned uniformed cops from marching as a group since 2021. The decision came in the wake of the massive nationwide Black Lives Matter protests that followed the May 2020 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. In a statement at the time, HoP described the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and policing across the U.S. as fundamentally flawed, citing data indicating that LGBTQ+ people, and transgender people in particular, are disproportionately likely to experience violent encounters with police. Related LGBTQ+ folks have a long & troubling history with police. Is mending fences ever possible? The NYPD has apologized for its actions at the Stonewall Uprising, but there is so much more to atone for. According to the New York Times, the ban was slated to expire this year, but HoP reportedly took no action to lift it. On Friday, June 27, two days ahead of the march, the organization released a statement clarifying that police officers were welcome to participate, as long as they did so without weapons. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Everyone is welcome to March with NYC Pride, so long as they follow our rules and guidelines, in place to ensure the protection of our marchers, spectators, and community, the statement read.HoP explained that the Gay Officers Action League (GOAL) had requested an exemption to its policy barring weapons from the march so that its members could participate in full dress uniform, which includes the concealed carry of firearms. HoP said its membership voted to deny the request. To be clear, GOAL is welcome to march without weapons like every other contingent and we welcome them to join us as we March to protect trans youth, advocate for full equality and stand in proud defiance of the attacks our community is facing, the statement said. In response, GOAL organized a demonstration during Sundays march, the first time the group has protested NYC Pride since the 2021 ban went into effect, according to the Times. Protesters, some in uniform, held signs that said Let gay cops back into Pride March and Our uniform is our protest, and were joined by New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and department chief John Chell.Tisch blasted HoPs decision in a June 28 letter to the organization, which she also posted on social media. In it, she quoted a communication from HoP in which the organization appeared to acknowledge that its weapons policy was, in effect, a ban on uniformed cops, as officers are required to carry service weapons as part of their uniforms. She described HoPs Friday statement clarifying that officers can march in uniform, but without their firearms, as a PR stunt. The decision to ban LGBTQ+ members of the NYPD from the Pride Parade is a disgrace to the spirit of Pride.Read my letter to the organizers. pic.twitter.com/gTg7UgaJso Jessica S. Tisch (@NYPDPC) June 28, 2025It is also the height of hypocrisy to request the security and protection of thousands of armed, uniformed police officers for The March on Sunday and then ban from that event the very officers that proudly represent your community, Tisch wrote.According to the New York Daily News, an internal HoP memo states that the NYPD remains a partner in monitoring and addressing security threats, the NYPD response is to be called upon only when absolutely necessary.Tisch described the exclusion of uniformed cops from the NYC Pride March as a disgrace to the spirit of Pride. But many members of the LGBTQ+ community disagree. New Yorks Pride March, after all, commemorates the June 1969 Stonewall Riots, an uprising that came in response to a police raid on the bar and consistent harassment of LGBTQ+ people, and particularly trans people of color. The NYPD did not issue an official apology for the 1969 raid until 2019.Tischs letter drew support from New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and New York City Mayor Eric Adams (I), a former cop. Adams, state Attorney General Letitia James, and presumptive Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani all stopped to greet the GOAL protesters during Sundays march, the Times reported. Out New York City Councilmember Erik Bottcher (D) also shared a Sunday Instagram post expressing his disagreement with HoPs ban. NYPD detective Brian Downey, GOALs president, told the Times that while he understood the spirit of the weapons ban, it felt targeted at LGBTQ+ cops.It takes a tremendous amount of courage to be out. It takes an even more tremendous amount of courage to be out in uniform, Downey told reporters at Sundays march, according to the Times. Acknowledging some LGBTQ+ peoples distrust of police, Downey said that GOAL has worked to change the system from within, and were going to continue to do that work.Downey added that he was optimistic about continuing talks with HoP and has no ill will towards New York City Pride. GOAL, he said, hoped the march would be a successful symbol of protest, as it always is.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 9 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COMTrans teens history-making chess win in Germany triggers pathetic anti-trans backlashIn the hushed halls of competitive chess, where the clash of queens and bishops usually eclipses cultural warfare, a teenage girl has found herself at the center of Germanys latest front in the debate over transgender womens inclusion in sports.Nora Heidemann, 17, a trans girl from North Rhine-Westphalia, made history this month by winning Germanys under-18 girls chess championship, scoring 7.5 out of nine points and outperforming 27 rivals. Her victory, reported by Apollo News, a German political news outlet, and later detailed in The Times of London, has triggered a fierce conversation over who belongs in womens competitionseven in pursuits where brainpower, not brawn, rules the day.Heidemanns path to the championship was anything but typical. She competed in the open U18 division at her state-level event but failed to qualify directly, according to Apollo News. Her legal gender change was finalized only after the deadline for girls registration had passed. Ultimately, she secured one of five discretionary free places, awarded based on performance ratings, not gender identity, the outlet reports.Still, her win has fueled skepticism from some quarters of the German chess community. Nadja Jussupow, head of the German Commission for Womens Chess and a former champion, stated that more trans women have been entering womens tournaments since Germanys Self-Determination Act took effect in 2021. They havent undergone any treatment or anythingthey merely declared themselves to be women, Jussupow said. The Times reports that she claimed some cisgender women players were considering quitting, fearing unfair competition.Jussupow suggested a one-year waiting period for newly declared trans women before competing in womens categories, a proposal that reportedly found support among some womens chess referees. The German Chess Federation has rejected any ban, citing Germanys new legal protections and stressing that chess is diverse and inclusive. Federation president Ingrid Lauterbach condemned the discriminatory backlash Heidemann has faced on social media, saying, Were an inclusive sport and want to be so.Internationally, the World Chess Federation imposed a temporary ban in 2023, preventing trans women from womens tournaments pending further reviewa rule Germany opposes, pointing out that a trans woman had already claimed a national womens title in the early 2000s, Apollo News reports.0 Comments 0 Shares 9 Views 0 Reviews
