WWW.404MEDIA.COPodcast: The Life Changing Power of LiftingFor this weeks podcast, Im talking to our friend Casey Johnston, a tech journalist turned fitness journalist turned independent journalist. Casey studied physics, which led her to tech journalism; she did some of my favorite coverage of Internet culture as well as Apples horrendous butterfly laptop keyboards. We worked together at VICE, where Casey was an editor and where she wrote Ask a Swole Woman, an advice column about weightlifting. After she left VICE, Casey founded Shes a Beast, an independent site about weightlifting, but also about the science of diet culture, fitness influencers on the internet, the intersections of all those things, etc.She just wrote A Physical Education: How I Escaped Diet Culture and Gained the Power of Lifting, a really great reported memoir about how our culture and the media often discourages people from lifting, and how this type of exercise can be really beneficial to your brain and your body. I found the book really inspiring and actually started lifting right after I read it. In this interview we talk about her book, about journalism, about independent media, and how doing things like lifting weights and touching grass helps us navigate the world. WWW.UNCLOSETEDMEDIA.COMBeing LGBTQ in America vs. Canada. Why Is It Safer in One Country?Subscribe nowAs a Canadian transplant who has been living in the U.S. for 11 years, this week marks two national holidays: Canada Day, which took place on July 1, and Independence Day, which many Americans will celebrate on July 4.People often ask me why Im so proud to be a Canuck. There are many obvious reasons, including universal health care (yes, its actually free); an immigration system so ingrained in our national identity that we strive to be a multicultural mosaic rather than a melting pot; and a global reputation for being nice, well-educated and funny. But as a gay Canadian, I have become increasingly proud of my home and native land since launching an LGBTQ news publication focused in the U.S.North of the border, we dont just talk the talk when it comes to equality. We frankly dominate the U.S. in terms of LGBTQ progress. Here are a few stats that prove it:Gay sex: We legalized it in 1969, 34 years before the U.S. followed suit in 2003.Gay marriage: We legalized it in 2005, 10 years before the U.S. did so. And unlike in America, there is no meaningful push to overturn it.While conversion therapy practiced by licensed therapists is banned for minors in some U.S. states, Canada has banned it nationwide for minors and adults alike (and, drumroll this ban also applies to religious leaders, unlike in the U.S.).We recognize gender identity as grounds for asylum status and legally recognize nonbinary gender markers. The U.S. does not.I could go on. But you get the gist. At a time when the president of the U.S. is making claims that hed like to annex Canada and turn my country into Americas 51st state, theres been a groundswell of outrage. And thats not surprising. Life north of the border is, in so many ways, safer for minority groups and underdogs of all walks of life. Its certainly the case for LGBTQ people.Happy Canada Day!Subscribe for LGBTQ-focused, accountability journalism.Subscribe nowTwo Teens Shot Near Stonewall Inn After NYC Pride March, Police Say (NBC)One teenage victim was shot in the head while another was stable after being shot in the leg. WWW.PROPUBLICA.ORGElon Musk Hired a Dozen Texas Lobbyists This Year. State Law Keeps the Extent of Their Influence Under Wraps.by Lauren McGaughy, The Texas Newsroom ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. This article is co-published with The Texas Newsroom and The Texas Tribune as part of an initiative to report on how power is wielded in Texas. Elon Musks team of Texas lobbyists during the 2025 legislative session did not rival those of huge energy and telecommunications companies, which typically employ dozens of people to represent them. But Musk and his companies still hired more lobbyists this year than any other since 2021, according to data from the Texas Ethics Commission. Musk, the billionaire businessman behind carmaker Tesla and aerospace company SpaceX, influenced several new Texas laws this year. How his lobbyists came about these wins, however, is more of a mystery. His lobbyists, who represented Tesla, SpaceX and the social media giant X Corp., spent tens of thousands of dollars on things like gifts and meals for Texas elected officials and others during the session, according to an analysis of state ethics data. In most cases, Texas transparency laws do not require lobbyists to disclose which politicians they wined and dined or on behalf of which clients. The Texas Newsroom reached out to all 12 of Musks lobbyists registered with the state this session. Only one, Carrie Simmons, a lobbyist who counts Tesla among her clients, responded, but she declined to be interviewed. She said only Musks companies could comment on their work this session. Emails sent to Musks companies and to Musk himself were not returned. The Texas Newsroom was able to find hints of some of their actions in records obtained from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and state Sen. Adam Hinojosa. Other documents detailing their deeper connections are hidden from disclosure by state laws.Ethics experts said the responsibility to improve transparency lies with Texas lawmakers. State law provides a base level of transparency for the public on who lobbyists are and who they represent, said Andrew Cates, a former lobbyist who wrote a guide on state ethics rules. Beyond that, the Legislature simply has not prioritized enough transparency in how the dollars are actually being spent on legislators on a regular basis. But thats not the lobbys fault, its the Legislatures, Cates said. Tom Forbes, president of the Professional Advocacy Association of Texas, a statewide lobbyist organization, said while lobbyists sometimes get a bad rap, they play a critical role for lawmakers trying to make decisions on complex policies. He told The Texas Newsroom that his group is agnostic about making reporting requirements more stringent but will follow any changes the state implements. Our association is going to comply with whatever law the Legislature passes, Forbes said. Who did Musk hire and who did they lobby? Eight of Musks lobbyists worked for SpaceX, according to filings with the Ethics Commission. Tesla had four, one of whom also worked for X.Musks lobbyists include former advisers and staffers for Gov. Greg Abbott, among them Mike Toomey and Reed Clay. Another lobbyist, Will McAdams, once sat on the Public Utility Commission of Texas, which regulates the states electric, telecommunications, and water and sewer utilities. All but one lobbyist had other clients for whom they were also working, making it more difficult to track exactly how much spending went to further Musks agenda. Benjamin Lancaster, a former legislative staffer, was only on SpaceXs payroll.Lobbyists are not required to report their exact salaries, only a pay range. According to Ethics Commission data, Musk pledged to pay somewhere between about $400,000 to nearly $1 million in total to his lobbyists for their work this year. Half of them could rake in more than $110,000 each working for Musks companies. Each month, lobbyists report their total spending. But state rules dont require them to disclose who was on the receiving end unless the lobbyist shelled out more than $132.60 on one person in a single day. This includes food and beverages, transportation, lodging or entertainment. Taxes and tips are not counted. The disclosure threshold for gifts is $110.Lobbyists also dont need to disclose exactly who attended events to which all legislators were invited, like catered lunches for the entire Texas House of Representatives or happy hours hosted off-site.In practice, these rules mean a lobbyist could buy the same elected official a steak dinner every night. As long as the daily cost stays under that amount, they dont need to say who got the free meal.Musks lobbyists spent more than $46,000 on food and drink alone for elected officials and their staff, family and guests this year, according to state ethics records. None of them detailed which elected officials may have been on the receiving end, implying all of their spending remained beneath the daily threshold.Jim Clancy, the former chair of the Ethics Commission, said its common for multiple lobbyists to divide a single bill in order to stay below the reporting threshold. They have 15 different credit cards in the deal to make sure that its all below the limit, Clancy told The Texas Newsroom. The Legislature has to change it. And if they did, they wouldnt get to eat for free.A slate of ethics bills, including several to require transparency into who funds mass text messages for political campaigns, failed to become law this year, according to The Texas Tribune. Meanwhile, legislators approved a new law that will reduce the fine for former lawmakers who engage in illegal lobbying activity. What do other records show? While lobbyists are not required to disclose which bills they discuss in private meetings with officials and their staff, they must note their position if they choose to testify on a piece of legislation. This is how The Texas Newsroom identified the 13 bills on which Musks lobbyists took a public stance. The Texas Newsroom was able to glean some additional insight on lobbyist influence from records received through public information requests.Calendars for Hinojosa, a newly elected South Texas Republican who authored multiple bills that would benefit SpaceX and other aerospace companies, showed he or his staff had meetings scheduled with lobbyists or representatives from Musks rocket company at least three times in two months. Emails showed Patrick penned a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration supporting SpaceXs ability to increase the number of launches at its South Texas rocket site.Patrick was also invited to take a tour of the Tesla Gigafactory outside Austin, these records showed, but its unclear if he went.Neither Hinojosa nor Patrick responded to requests for an interview. The Texas Senate declined to release other documents that could have shed light on how Musks companies interacted with elected officials. In denying their release, Senate Secretary Patsy Spaw said communications between state lawmakers and Texas residents are confidential by law. The reason, she said, is to ensure the right of citizens of the state to petition their state government without fear of harassment, retaliation or public ridicule. This could include emails with lobbyists. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPro-drag queen church kicks cops out of their parking lot, sends them $10K invoice for parkingA pro-LGBTQ+ church in Florida that made headlines for having drag queens deliver a sermon just slapped their local sheriffs office with a bill for $10,000 for parking vehicles in the church parking lot.The Allendale United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg posted an image of the invoice on their Facebook. The invoice says that its for unauthorized use of private church parking lot beginning at 6:00 AM. 13 vehicles occupying 17 parking spots. THEONION.COMStudy Finds Curative Power Of Prayer Limited To Genital WartsCHICAGOEmphasizing the constraints of Gods healing hands, a new study published Thursday in the Journal Of The American Medical Association found that the curative power of prayer was limited exclusively to genital warts. Our data revealed that while people attempt to cure a host of medical conditions by praying, the only ailment it was shown to be effective against was genital warts, said lead author Dr. Patrick Mercier, explaining that despite prayer being promoted as a remedy for cancer, drug addiction, and mental illnesses like depression and schizophrenia, such invocations for divine intervention were utterly useless unless the condition somehow involved viral growths located around the groin and anus. The ability of prayer to treat sicknesses and disorders was so narrow, in fact, that it could not even heal plantar warts found on the soles of feet. That said, entreaties to our Creator were so efficient at addressing genital warts specifically that patients who held their hands over the affected vulvas and penises and pleaded to a higher power for relief often found their HPV breakouts cleared up within 24 hours. Mercier added that curing genital warts was actually the only thing prayer was capable of achieving across the board. The post Study Finds Curative Power Of Prayer Limited To Genital Warts appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.PRIDE.COM'The Ultimatum: Queer Love's AJ Bloum stole hearts & caught heat but did she get her dream girl?Spoilers for season two of The Ultimatum: Queer Love follow. The Ultimatum: Queer Love wraps up its second season today with its final episodes and reunion hitting Netflix. Once again, the experiment brought together couples where one partner is ready to walk down the aisle and the other isnt ready to commit. So, in a quest to move their relationship forward, they agree to split up and live with someone else for three weeks before reuniting. As you can imagine, the season closed out with plenty of dramatics, tears, and, incredibly, some actual happily ever afters. Perhaps the sweetest of them all were AJ Bloum and Britney Thompson. Prior to the show, the couple had been together for five years, building a beautiful life together, but AJ was dragging her feet when it came to getting engaged. Based on how the season started, no one would blame you for assuming these two would separate by the end. AJ quickly became one of the more controversial cast members because of their flirty dating style. Despite that and the fireworks on the night of The Choice, when each cast member chooses their new trial wife what ended up unfolding was an awakening in AJ that they really did want to be married to their partner. PRIDE sat down with Bloum to talk about that journey, its happy ending, and some of the more awkward bumps along the road. They also got vulnerable talking about what it meant to be the only Black couple this season, and issued a warning to future cast members who have the wrong impression of what the purpose and value of this show really are.PRIDE: You've been through this experience, the ups, the downs, all that, and now you've gotten to relive it again, but this time with all the noise of the world weighing in. How are you mentally and emotionally preparing for that?AJ: I'm staying super rooted in family right now, super rooted in community, self. I do a lot of community events here in Orlando. Being part of the Pride committee here in Orlando has been super grounding and is helping me take my mind off things. As queer people, we are always looking for better representation, fuller representation. I'm curious for you, how do you hope your story can help to create a fuller picture of what the queer community and queer love look like?Honestly, I'm hoping that [in] my story, people can really just see that it's just one of many. I can't tell all queer stories because I'm not everyone.Being the only Black couple [on] the show, I really just hope that people can not just see us as a monolith, but just see us as love. That's what it is. So, I hope that they can take that from it, that love comes in all shapes and sizes. It looks different to everybody, but it necessarily doesn't have to feel different than everybody else's love. I'm hoping that people can see that love is strong and it grows and it's challenging and it's hard and it's difficult, but I hope that they can see that story and just want something better for themselves. You do bring up an important point about the cast, because you're representing so many communities, including the Black community. Did that create added pressure for the two of you?If I'm being honest, slightly, because I think that if you look at me and Britney, with us being the only Black couple, I think a lot of people can look at that and say, Okay, well, if they mess up, that's the only representation we have. I think it was a lot of well, not a lot but a little bit of added pressure. But again, I can only talk about me and show what I have. I hope that people could just see that I'm just one person, Im not the voice of all Black people. I'm not the voice of the Black queer community, but I can shine a light, and I hope that this light will help lead other people to want to represent their love in their communities, in a bigger light and/or a bigger stage.Early in the process, you really put yourself out there and tried to connect with everyone, and some people may have misinterpreted that. As evidenced by some hurt feelings. I'm curious how you interpret things as you watch them played back.It was kind of crazy to see that people thought that I was, in a way, plotting to get with certain people. Like, I never went around telling people you should choose me, pick me as your number one. The fact that people already had that in their hearts and wanted to go on more dates with me, I honestly thought was a little surprising. It was interesting watching this, kind of like, 'the British are coming' Revolutionary [War style] plan to get at me, to make me out like I'm some person that was here for fun and games. I know how it comes off as far as, like, watching it back, but I really did have a lot of deep connections and deep conversations with a lot of these individuals. But I think that with my decision [to choose Marie as my trial wife], I would hope that people saw that I wasn't here for fun and games. It really was me trying to get clarity and answers, and my decision, for me, was more grounding and stable.Did you choose your partner based on someone you felt safe cohabiting with and that you connected with on an emotional level, but who maybe was not as threatening to the relationship, because your goal was always to find your way back to Britney?I think thats the goal, right? Everybody wants to find their way back to their partner. But that wasn't necessarily my entire goal. My goal really was: If we are meant to be together, then that will be. If we are not, then this process will show that, and maybe we're saving each other so much more time on deliberation and hard conversations than if we were in the real world. My overall understanding of this was really just to find somebody to help me understand if marriage is what I want? What's really my hesitancy? I know what it is, but can I get over that? Is living with somebody going to change my mind on that? I didn't necessarily find that answer in Marie, unfortunately, but I was able to find it throughout the process. So, I think that without this process, I really would not be here in a vibrant relationship with the love of my life today.Would you do it again? Absolutely not. I think once was enough. As one of the few people on this planet who has had this experience, what advice would you give to couples considering the experiment? I honestly would tell them, Make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. Don't do this if you think you're going to get something out of this. If you're looking for fame, this isn't one of those types of things. Do it because you generally need... answers. And you want clarity, you want understanding. And if you're able to come to the table with that, then I promise you the experience will be worth it.What advice would you have given yourself?I would tell myself: Don't do it. No, I'm just kidding! I think I just have a little bit more urgency during dating week. Be a little bit more decisive. As a Libra, you're not decisive.Speak up more when you feel uncomfortable. It's okay if you're not having the greatest experience, but speak up when you feel like something's wrong. Speak up when you feel like something wasn't said right. Really, let your voice be heard. I feel like I kind of didn't have that as much [of a voice] throughout my experience, and I wish in certain circumstances, when something was wrong, I would have spoken up more. OK, lets end on a fun note: if there were ever a celebrity couple edition of The Ultimatum: Queer Love, who would you like to see in the cast? Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe. They are still together, and I'm waiting for a marriage out of that. So, I probably would hope they would do something like this and maybe we throw in Ariana Grande because of Wicked.Oh, [and] JoJo Siwa, because, girl.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews
