Mega-influential preacher John MacArthur supported slavery & hated LGBTQ+ people. He just died.
John MacArthur, an influential evangelical pastor and Biblical originalist who espoused misogyny, racism, and homophobia over a sixty-year career behind the pulpit, died on Monday. He was 86.MacArthur was noted for his expository preaching, narrowly focused on the meaning and historical context of a particular piece of scripture. In thousands of sermons delivered from his 3000-seat megachurch in Sun Valley, California, MacArthur walked his congregation line by line through a single Bible passage to reinforce his view that Authority and submission pervade the whole universe. Related Far-right megachurch pastor calls Biden the epitome of homosexual immorality The pastor also condemned Bidens support for all the transgender nonsense. Late in life, MacArthur became an outspoken culture warrior, denouncing critical race theory and an epidemic of wokenessin the church and American society. He was also an unrepentant supporter of President Donald Trump in the wake of COVID-era lockdowns. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In August 2020, Mr. MacArthur told an interviewer for a podcast associated with Liberty University that Trump had called to thank him for taking a stand on church closures, The New York Times reports. The two men discussed why Christians could not vote Democratic, MacArthur said.Theres no way that a Christian could affirm the slaughter of babies, homosexual activity, homosexual marriage, or any kind of gross immorality, he said.MacArthur clashed with other perceived enemies within Christianity, including the Roman Catholic Church, Baptists, and leaders espousing charismatic theology and the prosperity gospel, among them televangelists Robert Schullerand Joel Osteen.According to MacArthur, American evangelicals had led millions of people astray with the damning false assurance of insidious easy-believism. Christians who believed they were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit were teaching a counterfeit, aberrant Christianity, he said. Hecalledthem harebrained people prompted by Satan and decried the charismatic movements widespread presence in Christian media.MacArthurs first sermon as head of Grace Community Church, delivered in 1969 when he was just 29, parsed Matthew 7:21, which says, Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.MacArthurs death was met with restrained relief from his perceived enemies.MacArthurs theology was and remains toxic, wrote the publisher of Baptist News Global. "When someone who has harmed real people over & over again dies, we need to pause & consider that reality In part because it is so painful for those who were victimized to hear others heap laurels on the person who harmed them." @markwingdallas https://t.co/Ab1bPkqcuQ Christa Brown (@ChristaBrown777) July 16, 2025Grace grew rapidly under MacArthurs leadership, and demand for his sermons exploded. By the end of the 1970s, more than 100,000 Christians nationwide were receiving MacArthurs recorded sermons every week. The church later launched a separate ministry, Grace to You, to broadcast MacArthurs messages on Christian radio. In 1979, MacArthur taught on Titus 2 and the apostle Pauls instructions that women be busy at home and subject to their husbands. Women, MacArthur maintained, should not work outside the home, and families should not require two incomes. He consequently removed all women from staff positions at Grace.God has designed that men be given the position of authority, and women the position of submission. A woman, whether she is married or single, must recognize the fact that in general, as a woman, she must have a spirit of submission to all men.MacArthur was unstinting in his condemnation of gay people. When a society turns to sexual immorality, homosexual immorality, and a reprobate mind, God gives them up, he told far-right websiteBreitbart.Theres a sense in which God takes His hand of blessing off that society. When He gives them up, it means he gives them up to the consequences of their choices. If you follow that pattern, what you get is Joe Biden, who is the epitome of all those things. He condemned marriage equality as a blasphemy against God.Same-sex marriage is not a marriage at all because it goes against Gods design for the institution. It is a blasphemy against God, as is transgender life and homosexuality, as well, he said. That is the message to give in love.Of another pastors advice to a congregant to attend an LGBTQ+ wedding in 2024, MacArthur told his congregation, Its not loving to help somebody celebrate stepping into the fury of Gods judgment. MacArthur also denounced gay-affirming Christian denominations as Satans church, claimed thatgay people dont really exist, that Christiansshould be actively offensiveagainst homosexuality, and thatJesus hates thosewho dont hate LGBTQ+ people. The church leader was also a proponent ofconversion therapy. No tenet in his preaching defined MacArthurs worldview better, however, than the special place slavery held in his heart. To throw out slavery as a concept simply because there have been abuses, I think, is to miss the point, he said. There can also be benefits. For many people, poor people, perhaps people who werent educated, perhaps people who had no other opportunity, working for a gentle, caring, loving master was the best of all possible worlds.Slavery is not objectionable if you have the right master, MacArthur claimed. Its the perfect scenario.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Renee Rapp Roasts Sabrina Carpenter and Broadway Burnout in Hilarious Lie Detector Test
Renee Rapps chaotic honesty was on full display in her recent Vanity Fair lie detector test, where no topic was off-limits, not even a faux feud with fellow pop princess Sabrina Carpenter. The Mean Girls star gave fans a candid, curse-laden glimpse into her unfiltered thoughts on Broadway burnout, gay group chats, and the scariest fandom in the world: bisexual teens.Maxed Out on Mean GirlsWhen asked if shed ever return to her iconic role as Regina George should Sabrina Carpenter reprise her part in Mean Girls, Rapp didnt hesitate. I dont know that Im doing a threepeat, she said, noting shes maxed out on Mean Girls after playing the role in both the stage and film adaptations.Though she clarified that Carpenter had only just begun her Broadway run before the pandemic shuttered theatersIt was more than likely rather inconvenient [for her]Rapp was quick to make the moment her own. When asked, tongue-in-cheek, whether she valued Carpenters opinion, Rapp deadpanned, I do not value the opinion of Sabrina Carpenter. The polygraph called that a lie. But the internet called it iconic.Fistfights and Funeral SolosThe interview spiraled into gloriously unserious territory as Rapp confessed to fighting a seven-year-old outside a Lakers game. The kid allegedly called her a slur, and she retaliated while hungover. Outta line. I shouldve held back, she admitted, though the polygraph confirmed she was telling the truth. Do I think I won that fight? No. I fear hell be using it more. She also revealed she got her performance start by singing at funerals, because, as she put it, I just wanted to make it about myself. Her favorite? Amazing Grace at her great-grandmothers funeral. She couldnt comment on it cause she was dead.Broadway Burnout and Big DreamsRapp got real about her complicated relationship with Broadway, explaining she struggled as a depressed teenager during her time on stage. I dont like doing the same thing every day, she said, noting shed need to re-fall in love with it before returning to the grind. But that doesnt mean shes slowing down, she still plans to EGOT by 40. Is 40 old? the interviewer asked. If you act annoying, then hell yeah, Rapp replied.Fear of Fans and Frank Oceans Release SchedulePerhaps the most relatable moment? Her fear of her own fandom. Have you ever seen a rabid bunch of white 16-year-old bisexuals unhappy? she asked. With all the love in the world, yall scare the shit out of me.She also admitted shes not rushing to release new music, despite fan pressure. Somebody tells me to release something and its gonna wait another six months no matter who it is, she said. Yall are gonna have to wait for that shit longer.Asked whether shes modeled her release strategy on Frank Ocean, she laughed: No, but it damn sure seems like it.Judd Is Gay and Thats a ComplimentIn classic Renee fashion, the interview wrapped with her declaring her lie detector test operator, Judd, is gay. Its a compliment. I like gay people, she said, before inviting him out with her friend group. She also gushed about her girlfriend, Towa Bird, and their group chat, fittingly named Gay. The couples hard launch at the Vanity Fair Oscars party was no PR stunt. Shes so pretty and I love watching people fawn over her, Rapp said. You gotta come. Sorry, sister.Whether shes trolling Sabrina, dragging Boston, or complimenting LeBron James pretty little face, Renee Rapp proves time and time again: the girl is not media trained, and were better for it.Stay tuned for her upcoming music, which youll get when she damn well feels like it.Source

FDA Inspectors Again Find Dangerous Breakdowns at an Indian Factory Supplying Medications to U.S. Consumers
by Megan Rose and Debbie Cenziper ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. U.S. inspectors have uncovered new and dangerous breakdowns in drugmaking at an Indian factory owned by Sun Pharma that produces generic medications for American consumers. The latest problems come 2 1/2 years after the Food and Drug Administration gave the facility a special pass to continue sending certain drugs made there to the United States, even after the factory was officially banned from the U.S. market. The factory failed to investigate the source of bacteria found in test vials or deal with damaged equipment that had caused drugs to be contaminated with metal particles, according to the June inspection report, which ProPublica obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.Workers improperly handled vials and stoppers meant for sterile medications and, in some cases, failed to disinfect manufacturing areas and equipment, according to the report. One FDA inspector saw a worker put on a sterile gown and then brush up against a waste bin and use their hands to push down the overflowing trash. Investigators also saw liquid dripping through ceiling cracks and the growth of what appeared to be fungus and mold in a storage area for samples used for testing. The FDA in late 2022 had banned the factory in the city of Halol from shipping drugs to the United States because of similar manufacturing failures.ProPublica reported last month that a low-profile group inside the agency at the same time exempted some medications from that ban, ostensibly to prevent drug shortages. The FDA has granted similar exemptions for drugs made at more than 20 other foreign factories that violated critical standards in drugmaking and were barred from the U.S. market. The FDA kept the practice largely hidden from the public. The agency did not regularly test drugs coming from the banned factories or proactively monitor reports about potential harm among consumers, ProPublica found. In Suns case, more than a dozen drugs were initially excluded from the Halol import ban. The company is still allowed to send five to the United States, government records show, including vecuronium bromide, a muscle relaxer used during surgery, and the cancer drug doxorubicin. Also excluded are divalproex delayed release tablets, which treat seizures and other conditions; leuprolide injection, used by people with prostate cancer, endometriosis and other conditions; and temozolomide capsules, for brain cancer. The inspection last month marked the first time the FDA had been back to the factory in the 2.5 years since it imposed the import ban and Sun started sending exempted drugs to the United States. Inspectors found that procedures designed to prevent microbiological contamination of sterile drugs were not established or followed and that equipment wasnt maintained to prevent malfunctions that would alter the safety, identity, strength, quality or purity of the drug product, according to the report. Some of the concerns focused on the exempted drugs still being sent to the United States, according to a person familiar with the situation who did not want to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The FDA blacked out the names of the drugs that were potentially compromised on its publicly released inspection report, including a medication made on a manufacturing line in which several batches had to be rejected because they were filled with black particles. A portion of the FDAs June inspection report redacted the names of potentially compromised drugs manufactured by Sun that continue to be released to the U.S. market. (Obtained by ProPublica) Its disappointing to see issues continue to come up at this site given the sites role in potentially manufacturing critical drugs for U.S. consumers, said the person familiar with the inspection findings. Sun did not respond to questions about the latest inspection or its regulatory history with the FDA. In an email, the company said that adherence to quality standards is a top priority for Sun, and we maintain a relentless focus on quality and compliance to ensure the uninterrupted supply of medicines to our customers and patients worldwide. We continue to work proactively with the US FDA and remain committed to achieve full resolution of any FDA regulatory issues at our facilities. The FDA said factories that receive exemptions from import bans are required to conduct extra testing on drugs with third-party oversight before they are sent to the United States, helping to ensure patient safety. Suns Halol plant, however, was cited in 2022 and again last month for failing to thoroughly investigate unexplained quality problems, including impurities, found during drug testing. The FDA did not respond to a request for comment about the latest Sun inspection. U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Michigan, who recently co-sponsored a bill to lower prescription drug costs, said in a statement to ProPublica that the FDA has a responsibility to ensure that drugs coming into the country are safe.We need full transparency about the extent to which exemptions enabled sub-par, unsafe, or ineffective drugs to be distributed to American patients, she said. Medill Investigative Lab student Katherine Dailey contributed reporting.

17 disabled LGBTQ+ celebrities who are changing Hollywood
Happy Disability Pride Month!Just as Pride Month ends, Disability Pride Month begins. The intersection between gender, sexuality, and disability is ever present, and according to a 2019 report from the Movement Advancement Project, 3-5 million LGBTQ+ Americans live with one or more disabilities, and that includes 40% of lesbian women and two in five trans adults. The judgement from people face from society, the lack of understanding of who you are, and the way the government criminalizes your identity and punishes your differences is a shared experience for the queer and disability communities. One that overlaps in unique ways when you are both LGBTQ+ and disabled. But there are some queer disabled celebs who are using their fame and platforms to fight back against inequality, advocate for more representation and inclusion, and show the world how diverse disabled people are. So, to celebrate Disability Pride Month, lets take a look at all of the LGBTQ+ disabled stars who are changing Hollywood and challenging the status quo.Chella ManSee on InstagramChella Man is a deaf trans multidisciplinary artist who explores the intersection of gender and disability in his artwork. My disability was interpreted as a medical issue, producing conversations and resources. But when it came to my gender and sexuality, the world went dark, Man told GLAAD of the challenges of being deaf and part of the LGBTQ+ community.Ryan OConnellSee on InstagramRyan OConnell is a gay man with cerebral palsy who is best known for his 2015 memoir I'm Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves, which he adapted into a Netflix series called Special. Special is the only show that was run by a disabled person who stars in it, and OConnell used the platform to strike back against society desexualize disabled people and take away their sexual agency. "I've often felt like a Ken doll with my private parts removed," O'Connell told Out, and argued that he wanted audiences to "see the character of Ryan as sexually viable.Jessica Kellgren-FozardSee on InstagramPopular British YouTuber Jessica Kellgren-Fozard is well known for her videos on disability awareness, LGBTQ+ history, and vintage fashion. Telling someone I am gay is instantly accepted, no questions asked, generally with a smile, the disabled lesbian content, who shares twins with her wife, told The Guardian. Telling someone I am disabled comes with, No? You dont look it, and a scrutinizing look. Nobody has ever accused every single gay person of scrounging off the state, but people have openly said that about disabled people, in front of me.Ryan J HaddadSee on InstagramPlaywright Ryan J Haddad, who is both gay and has cerebral palsy, explores the intersection of sex, queerness, and disability in his work. Most people likely know him for his role on Netflixs The Politician or his acclaimed solo play Hi, Are You Single?Ali StrokerSee on InstagramAli Stroker, who is bisexual and paraplegic, was a finalist on the second season of The Glee Project and went on to guest star on Glee back in 2013. Since then, shes graced the Broadway stage and took home a Tony Award in 2019 for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Oklahoma! And recently, shes also appeared in a number of hit shows like Only Murders in the Building, Ozark, and And Just Like That.Young people with disabilities look, you know, to television and film and theater and the media for signs of where they count and where they can make it in the world, Stroker told the ACLU about why disability representation is so important. And when we don't create representation for young people of all different kinds of people, then we send very strong messaging that they are not included in this arena."Bella RamseySee on InstagramNonbinary and autistic actor Bella Ramsey was diagnosed back in March, but the Last of Us star told British Vogue in their first interview talking about their diagnosis, that it has helped them better understand who they are. The label of being autistic has been so helpful to me because thats helped me to understand myself, but gender and sexuality-wise, labels do not feel comfy for me in any capacity, because I feel like Im putting myself into a box. I feel trapped, they said. Hannah GadsbySee on InstagramGenderqueer comedian Hannah Gadsby burst onto the scene in 2018 with her groundbreaking comedic special Nanette, where she unpacked gender, sexuality, and trauma in a hilarious and heartwarming way. Gadbsy has not only been open about their queer identity, but they also explored being autistic in a follow-up Netflix special in 2020 called Douglas. For a long time, I worried that Id been misdiagnosed. It was difficult to believe that I wasnt entirely to blame for my life being such a painful struggle, because I was so used to assuming I was a bad person. It took me a long time to get brave enough to simply share my diagnosis. My experience did not match the popular understanding of autism, and I knew I had to become an expert in neurobiology in order to untangle the myriad myths surrounding autism just to beg permission to claim that piece of my identity, Gadsby wrote in an essay for The Guardian about being autistic.Marissa BodeSee on InstagramThere are few disabled actresses who make it far in Hollywood and even fewer who are paraplegic and queer but Marissa Bode made it big when she landed the role of Nessarose in the musical films Wicked and Wicked: For Good.Bode was even able to add a moment into the film where a character tries to push Nessaroses wheelchair around without her consent an experience many disabled people are familiar with. Have had many a stranger touch my wheelchair without consent, unfortunately. Its usually a man, which isnt my favorite, but thats a conversation that was very important to include in the movie, she told Spectrum News. So maybe non-disabled people have a different perspective of how they interact with disabled people and how they assume things without fully asking. So, I think that was something I relate to and a very important addition to the film.Hormona LisaSee on InstagramTrans Drag Race star Hormona Lisa has been very open and vocal about being autistic. I really hope that by sharing my story, I can give others with autism the courage to embrace who they are, even when it feels like the world doesnt quite get them, Hormona previously told PRIDE. Sharing my diagnosis has always been something Ive been hesitant about, but Ive come to realize that being open about it is important not just for me, but for others who might feel alone in their own struggles."Aaron PhilipSee on InstagramWhen Aaron Philip started her modeling career at 16 years old, she had no idea that in two years she would become the first black, transgender, wheelchair-using model to be signed to Elite Model Management. But Philip is not just a beautiful model, shes also an LGBTQ+ and disability rights advocate who believes strongly in diverse representation in media. My goal is normalizing the presence of disabled people, women/femmes who are trans and gender nonconforming trans people, she told Dazed Digital. So that we can simply work, exist and be authentically valued in the high fashion industry and the world itself as a whole.Nyle DiMarcoSee on InstagramDeaf actor and model Nyle DiMarco came out as sexually fluid in 2015. He is best known for being the second male winner and first Deaf winner of Americas Next Top Model, starring of Switched at Birth, and winning season 22 of Dancing with the Stars. He also launched the reality series Deaf U on Netflix, was the executive producer on the short film Audible, and wrote a memoir titled Deaf Utopia: A MemoirAnd a Love Letter to a Way of Life.DiMarco told Ability Magazine that the biggest reason he wanted to focus on these projects was the lack of accurate Deaf representation on screen when he was a kid. Growing up, anytime that there was a Deaf representation or Deaf storylines in TV or in film, Deaf and hard-of-hearing people were always portrayed as one-dimensional without nuance or depth, he explained. While perhaps that wasnt necessarily wrong, it just wasnt accurate or reflective of my experience or perhaps other Deaf or hard-of-hearing peoples experiences."Skyler DavenportSee on InstagramBlind nonbinary actor Skyler Davenport wowed audiences with their role in the home invasion thriller See For Me in 2022 and talked openly about the need for more disabled actors playing disabled roles. Its not that you cant be a good actor, and you cant portray it accurately. But I think people that come into this world, and for whatever reason, their beingness has decided to experience a disability...theres something so special about that, they told Forbes. It brings this little indescribable spark to the role that youre just not going to get with someone that doesnt live in that day-to-day.Bradley RichesSee on InstagramOut gay actor Bradley Riches, who stole audiences' hearts when he starred on Heartstopper, Celebrity Big Brother, and now the British soap opera Emmerdale, has spoken openly about feeling misunderstood by people because hes autistic. "Acting is an escapism for me. I feel free and understood when playing characters when, most of the time, I felt misunderstood as Bradley. I am so happy that I can show autistic people that they arent alone and that they arent invisible they are beautiful and magical, Riches, who was diagnosed when he was 9 years old, told Metro.Wentworth MillerSee on InstagramGay actor Wentworth Miller made a name for himself on Prison Break before starring in DCs Legends of Tomorrow series. Miller then came out as autistic in 2021, when he told his followers on social media how much being autistic is tied to his identity. "This isn't something I'd change immediately being autistic is central to who I am. To everything I've achieved/articulated," actor Wentworth Miller wrote on Instagram, People reported back in 2021.Josh ThomasSee on InstagramAutistic comedian and actor Josh Thomas, who has starred on Australian shows Please Like Me, Everythings Gonna Be Okay, and The Strange Chores, wasnt diagnosed until he was an adult. Despite going most of his life not understanding his disability, Thomas thinks the way his mind works has been the key to the success of his podcast, How To Be Gay, where he talks to people about their experiences being part of the LGBTQ+ community.I was more aware of the fact that [Im] bad at some stuff getting people to feel comfortable and talk about themselves I wouldnt say Im the frontrunner for that job. Which I think got us interesting interviews because Im so direct, and nobody sounds like theyre bullshitting or being performative, he told The Guardian.Bex Taylor-KlausSee on InstagramNonbinary actor Bex Taylor-Klaus has spoken openly about being AuDHD, meaning that they are both autistic and have ADHD, and the importance of learning to embrace your disability. Embrace it. It may be a nuisance, it may be hard to deal with sometimes, but you can learn to manage it. Don't ever try to get rid of it entirely. Attention deficit makes you special, Taylor-Klaus said of their ADHD diagnosis, Additude reported. Jillian MercadoSee on InstagramDominican-American model and actor Jillian Mercado is an outspoken disability advocate who has muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair. The L Word: Generation Q star has used her fame to push for more disability representation and gender inclusivity in both fashion and television. She told The Mighty that its very, very important to see that authentic representation because its a life experience that someone who doesnt understand that authentic experience shouldnt be able to portray. It makes you feel good about who you are, and it lets you know that you can be anything that you want to be. And so thats very important to have representation to know that you can be a doctor, you can be a lawyer, you can be a mom, you can do anything you want to do.

Cooper Kochs Emmy nomination earned him a surprise prison call
Cooper Kochs Emmy nomination interviews included his chat withVariety being interrupted by a call from Californias Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. On the other end of the line sat Lyle Menendez, who was calling to offer his congratulations on Kochs nomination as Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie for playing Lyles brother, Erik, in Ryan Murphys Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. He was jealous that I was at Wimbledon this weekend, Koch told Entertainment Weekly later, still laughing at the surreal timing. He called to send his congrats and was very, very sweet. The nomination for Monsters puts the 28-year-old into heavyweight company with the likes of Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Stephen Graham (Adolescence), and Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent), and Brian Tyree Henry (Dope Thief) but Kochs focus remains on the real-life brothers who inspired the limited series. In May, a judge resentenced the brothers to life in prison with the possibility of parole, and theyll plead their cases before the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations parole board in August. This is sort of like the end of an era with it, said Koch in his EW interview. What a great way to put it to bed. Hopefully that will also go with the brothers getting released by the end of the summer. If the Menendez hearings go their way, Kochs first order of business is a long-teased tennis match against Lyle, who bragged about his skills during that prison call with Variety.Although Koch received a nod for his role as Erik, Nicholas Alexander Chavez who played Eriks brother Lyle, did not. His omission, alongside Ari Graynor, who starred as defense attorney Leslie Abramson, left Koch feeling devastated, according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.Apart from Kochs Lead Actor nod, the show did go on to grab another 10 nominations, including Supporting Actor and Actress for Javier Bardem and Chlo Sevigny as the Menendez parents, as well as Outstanding Casting, Picture Editing, Sound Mixing, Hairstyling, Period Costumes, Makeup, Music Composition, and Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series.Tune into the awards on September 14 on CBS to see who wins!

Megan Stalter Brings Unfiltered Chaos and Comedy to The Late Show Wig, Merch Corset and All
Megan Stalter may be promoting a new Netflix series, but when she showed up on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, it quickly became clear she brought more than just talking points. The Too Much and Hacks star transformed her segment into a comedic fever dream filled with absurd anecdotes, questionable fashion choices, and the kind of chaotic energy that only she can master. The Art of the EntranceStalter arrived on Colberts stage sporting a floor-grazing, butter-yellow wig that could double as a vintage mop, crimped in places, fraying at the ends, and anchored by a choppy fringe that barely grazed her brows. Paired with her DIY-style strapless top emblazoned with Meg Stalter. Prettiest Girl in America and flared denim, the look screamed kitschy Americana meets late-night surrealism. While theres no confirmation whether celebrity stylist Clayton Hawkins (known for working with Olivia Rodrigo and Rachel Zegler) was behind this particular hair moment, the two recently teamed up for the Too Much premiere, where Stalter rocked a 1960s-inspired ponytail with flipped ends. Their collaborations clearly embrace a maximalist, anything-goes approach, and Tuesday night was no exception.Breakfast in London and a One-Table WaitressWhat followed was less of an interview and more of a ride. Stalter and Colbert barely touched down on any topic for longer than 30 seconds. She talked about her new life in London, where her character Jessica relocates in the Netflix series after a breakup, and offered her take on being a server with just one table.Thats how I like to waitress, she deadpanned. You give more attention. You really get to know them. Sometimes too well. The two veered into stories about her self-designed corset made from tour merch, the perils of carrying a purse with ombr acrylic nails, and how her publicist was probably having a meltdown backstage. All Eyes on Too MuchWhile the interview may have spiraled in every direction, it still served its purpose: drumming up buzz for Too Much, the Lena Dunham-created romantic dramedy now streaming on Netflix. In the show, Stalter plays Jessica, a heartbroken workaholic who accepts a job in London only to fall for Felix (played by The White Lotuss Will Sharpe). The cast also includes Emily Ratajkowski, Michael Zegen, Rhea Perlman, Adle Exarchopoulos, and Andrew Rannells, with Dunham pulling double duty as both creator and supporting actor. From Chicago improv stages to viral Instagram reels, Stalter has long played characters who thrive in awkwardness, and Too Much seems like a natural next step. But her Colbert appearance makes one thing clear: no matter the platform, shes going to keep things weird, and we wouldnt want it any other way.Source

Human activity redistributes nitrogen fixation across the terrestrial biosphere
Nature, Published online: 16 July 2025; doi:10.1038/d41586-025-02209-2Detailed spatial estimates from a global analysis of biological nitrogen fixation on land reveal that natural environments sustain much less nitrogen fixation than was thought. But agricultural cultivation of nitrogen-fixing crops and forage drastically increases local nitrogen inputs, so that total agricultural nitrogen fixation nearly equals that of all natural lands combined.

Boston unveils new park honoring slain trans woman who inspired the Trans Day of Remembrance
A new park has opened in Boston to honor a Black trans woman who was killed nearby. The Rita Hester Community Green serves as a living tribute to the parks namesake, announced landscape architecture firm Copley Wolff. A statement from the firm said the park celebrates Hesters legacy of strength, identity, and community and features a dog park, flexible event lawn, quiet corners, and playful natural buffers. Related Rita Hesters life mattered In the pantheon of slain civil rights activists, Rita Hester, an African-American transgender woman, is among them. The park is located in Allston Yards, where Hester lived when, in 1998, she was stabbed to death in her apartment. She was 34 years old, and the killer has never been found. A plaque at the park reportedly reads, After Ritas life was tragically taken in an act of violence, her legacy inspired theTransgenderDay of Remembrance. Observed worldwide every November 20, the day honors the lives lost to anti-transgender violence and reaffirms a global commitment to kindness and equality. She just happened to be a star for Transgender Day of Remembrance for a whole lot of other people, Hesters sister, Eartha Hester, told Advocate, and I think thats really beautiful. Her death was not in vain, she started something that will last forever Ritas name is known worldwide. She also said she believes the murder is unsolved because the Boston police did not devote enough resources to it at the time. She suspects Ritas intersectional marginalized identities played a role in their lack of care for the case. They didnt gather evidence that they were supposed to because they didnt really care, she said. We have a man in a dress, whatever. They just didnt care. They didnt have empathy.Copley Wolff describes the park as a joyful, inclusive space made for connection and year-round fun. The firm designed it in collaboration with the citys urban planning department. The neighborhood also has a mural devoted to Hester that was installed in 2022.Earlier this year, the Boston City Council voted 12-1 in favor of a resolution declaring the capital city a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ people, meaning it will not enact anti-LGBTQ+ policies or comply with federal demands to do so. The resolution codifies LGBTQ+ protection at the local level and denounces policies that will undermine access to essential gender-affirming healthcare, reproductive services, and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Texas GOP holds special session to address deadly floods & files an anti-trans bathroom bill instead
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has called a special legislative session to address the deadly floods that have left 134 people dead and 101 others missing. However, in preparation for the session, state GOP lawmakers have filed 82 measures, none of which address the flooding. Instead, they seek to ban transgender women from using womens facilities (and Abbott personally supports the idea). In Abbotts proclamation for the special session, he laid out 18 priorities. The first four addressed the need for improved emergency warning, communication, and aid systems. The other priorities included further restricting abortions and election access, gerrymandering the state electoral map to favor Republicans, and legislation protecting womens privacy in sex-segregated spaces. Related Republicans join Democrats to repeal Texas anti-sodomy law Democrats have been trying to repeal the law since 1983. The state constitution says legislators can only file bills related to the governors priorities, but Republican legislators havent filed any bills related to the deadly floods, KXAN reported. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Instead, Republican state Rep. Valoree Swanson filed H.B. 32, which would require people only to use facilities in public schools, state universities, government-owned buildings, jails, and family violence shelters that match the biological sex assigned on their original birth certificate. Texas recently changed its laws to forbid transgender people from changing the gender markers on their birth certificates and drivers licenses.Anyone who allows the proposed law to be violated could be subject to civil fines from $5,000 to $25,000, as well as additional penalties. Swanson filed a similar bill during the previous legislative session, but it failed to pass after missing several legislative deadlines, Chron reported.Three other special session bills, H.B. 37, 65, and 70, would punish any person or internet service provider who aids or abets the distribution of abortion medication.H.B. 38, introduced by Democratic state Rep. Jessica Gonzalez (who is also chair of the Texas House LGBTQ Ca ucus), would prohibit workplace, housing, and public accommodations discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, but theres no way itll pass the states Republican-majority legislative chambers. Its also unclear how the bill relates to Abbotts list of priorities. I am proud to have filed H.B. 38 in preparation for the upcoming special session of our legislature, Gonzlez wrote in a statement on Tuesday. H.B. 38 is a comprehensive nondiscrimination bill that would codify equal protection for the LGBTQ+ community and military veterans in employment, housing, and public accommodations.During the last legislative session, Texas Republicans filed 88 anti-LGBTQ+ bills, four of which became law, including a ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in public schools and one mandating peoples genders be legally determined by their reproductive organs. TheTexasHouse voted torepealthe states anti-sodomy law, but Republicans prevented the repeal from getting a vote in thestate Senate.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Rochester group launches worlds first trans laureate program
This story is brought to you by our partners at the Kingdom of Navassa. The Kingdom of Navassa (Navassa), a socio-cultural initiative based in Rochester, N.Y., announced the launch of the worlds first Bernadine Casseus Trans Laureate Program. Named after Bernadine Casseus, a beloved local transgender woman and ballroom community advocate, the program arrives amid an increasingly hostile national climate for transgender people and aims to uplift transgender, nonbinary and gender-expansive individuals through civic engagement, artistic expression and public storytelling. The Trans Laureate embodies our belief that art can heal, unite and catalyze change, said Marie-Adlina de la Ferrire, founder of Navassa, niece of Casseus, and community editor of equalpride.De la Ferrire said the program was inspired both by her late aunts legacy and the urgent need to support trans voices at a time of widespread cultural and political attacks. Rather than focusing solely on defense and survival, she said the program seeks to place trans brilliance center stage, empowering individuals to lead through art and connection. The Trans Laureate will serve a one-year term starting in January 2026, curating public events such as performances, workshops, readings and exhibitions, while acting as a cultural ambassador locally and beyond. The position includes a $5,000 budget for an honorarium and community programming.Applicants must be at least 21 years old, identify as transgender, nonbinary or gender-expansive, and have a demonstrated record in community engagement, the arts, humanities or storytelling. Finalists will be interviewed in the fall, and the inaugural laureate will be announced during Trans Awareness Week in November. The program expands Navassas broader mission to merge art and civic life. Other projects include Flower City Queens, a fundraising calendar showcasing drag performers from Rochester, with proceeds supporting LGBTQ+ initiatives in both Greater Rochester and Haiti. The program has received initial support, including a $2,500 Pride Grant from Trillium Health Foundation. To ensure long-term sustainability, Navassa has launched a GoFundMe campaign and is seeking additional support from cultural institutions, foundations and individuals committed to trans-led programming.Securing an inaugural Pride Grant from Trillium Health Foundation shows that our region stands behind trans creatives but lasting impact will take collective effort, de la Ferrire said. Through this program, Navassa is doubling down on culture as community care.Prospective applicants must submit a personal statement, rsum, work samples and letters of support by 11:59 p.m. ET on Sept. 6. More information and application details are available at kingdomofnavassa.org/laureate.Apply by Sept. 6, 2025: kingdomofnavassa.org/laureate

Judge bizarrely rules that police at a Pride parade threatened the safety of transphobes
Just days before this weekends Pride parade in Northumbria in Northern England, a judge ruled that the local police departments chief constable wrongfully allowed uniformed officers to march under a Progress Pride flag at last years celebration. In a controversial decision critics say is riven with bias, the judge claimed officers marching with the flag breached their duty to impartiality and endangered imagined protesters with gender critical views. Related 20 police raided a gay bar for a compliance check. Then the patrons did something surprising. QBurgh described the moment as one of resistance, solidarity, and improvisational beauty The judicial review was brought by a female event participant who objected to police officers associating with messaging which was supportive of the cause of gender ideology, The Times of London reported. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In her challenge, plaintiff Lindsey Smith highlighted a decision to allow officers to station a police van decorated in colors indicative of support for the cause of gender ideology namely the colors of the Progress flag. The messaging which was supportive of the cause of gender ideology, including in the form of placards, chanting, imagery or flags, was a threat to her personal safety, she said. The judge in the case, Mr. Justice Linden, agreed, ruling it was contrary to the uniformed officers duties of impartiality, as well as the chief constables own duty of impartiality, to participate in the 2024 march in the way that they did. The fact that they wore their uniforms, marched as a contingent and carried the Police Pride and other flags demonstrated their support for the cause as police officers, the judge said, and by extension indicated hostility to those with gender critical views. It is not hard to imagine circumstances in which officers in question might be called on to deal with a clash between gender critical people and supporters of gender ideology, and therefore situations where the former had cause for concern as to whether they were being dealt with impartially, the judge wrote. The judge implied this perceived bias would influence officers decisions to permit gender critical people to demonstrate at all and could result in attempts to eject a gender critical person from the march.Smiths lawyer, Paul Conrathe, said the ruling was of national importance. Referring to so-called gender ideology, Smith said British police must be above the fray and avoid taking sides on what he called contested issues.Northumbria police responded that their primary aim during last years march was to keep people safe. The event also provided the force with an opportunity to engage with people including those who may have less confidence in policing, they said following the ruling. The department added that senior Northumbria officers would work through the ruling to understand the implications. They did not clarify whether officers would be allowed to march in the Pride parade this weekend.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
