Study Finds Macaws Evolved Vibrant Coloration To Pass The Time
CAMBRIDGE, MAClaiming there simply wasnt much else going on for the birds over the past several million years, a study published Tuesday by Harvard University ornithologists found that macaws evolved their vibrant coloration as a way to pass the time.According to our research, macaws striking plumage arose as a result of the New World parrots having essentially zero other avenues to keep themselves occupied from day to day, said the studys lead author, David Tuppman, adding that macaws likely diverged from their closest genetic relatives to develop eye-popping reds and greens around the time they realized it was either that or sit around bored out of their skulls for the next few eons. Our data suggests that macaws could only hang out in trees doing jack shit for so long before they had to find something, anything, to keep busy. Without opposable thumbs to twiddle or a deck of cards to get a game of poker going, evolving rainbow-hued feathers was the next best thing macaws could do to break up the monotony of their existence. The researchers added that, in recent years, several species of macaw had been observed gradually losing their coloration after taking up an interest in professional wrestling instead. The post Study Finds Macaws Evolved Vibrant Coloration To Pass The Time appeared first on The Onion.

Wall Street rises to record levels after report showing the jobless rate improved last month
Specialist John McNierney, center, and trader Mathias Roberts, right, work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)2026-02-11T04:24:12Z NEW YORK (AP) U.S. stocks are rising back to their record levels following an encouraging report that said the nations unemployment rate unexpectedly improved last month. The S&P 500 rose 0.5% early Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 237 points, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.6%. Treasury yields climbed in the bond market after the Labor Department said U.S. employers added 130,000 jobs to their payrolls last month, more than economists had expected. Moderna slumped after the Food and Drug Administration refused to consider its application for a new flu vaccine. Indexes rose across much of Asia and Europe.THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. APs earlier story follows below.U.S. markets were barely higher in cautious premarket trading Wednesday ahead of an update on U.S. employment that is expected to confirm a still-sluggish job market. Futures for the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq were all up around 0.1% before the bell.Until the January jobs report is released, markets will be focused on the latest corporate earnings reports, which so far have been mixed. Shares of Mattel, the maker of Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price toys, fell more than 26% after it closed out a rough year by missing Wall Streets sales and profit targets. Mattel reported 2025 net income of $398 million, a decline of $144 million from the previous year. Its guidance for 2026 also disappointed investors. Mattels latest results come just a day after rival toymaker Hasbro saw its shares climb 7.5% after topping analysts expectations for profit and revenue in its latest quarter. Mobile stock trading platform Robinhood Markets slid 7.8% after it hit profit targets but fell short on analysts revenue expectations as cryptocurrency trading volumes fell sharply.Ford Motor Co. rose 1.7% after it missed profit targets but beat revenue forecasts. The automaker, which recently announced that it would be drastically scaling back EV production, issued 2026 guidance for one measure of profit that was largely in-line with previous forecasts. Later Wednesday morning, the Labor Department is expected by analysts to report that the U.S. economy added 75,000 jobs last month. That would be an improvement over Decembers 50,000, but not reflective of strong economic growth and well short of the hiring boom of just a couple of years ago. Moreover, the January numbers are likely to be overshadowed by Labor Department revisions that will sharply reduce 2025 job creation and might even wipe it out altogether. Continued weakening in the labor market could push the Federal Reserve to cut its benchmark interest rate at its March meeting, even as inflation remains above its 2% target.Elsewhere, in Europe at midday, Germanys DAX lost 0.2%, the CAC 40 in Paris also shed 0.1% and Britains FTSE 100 rose 0.7%. Markets in Japan were closed for a holiday.Chinese markets crept higher, with the Hang Seng in Hong Kong up 0.3% at 27,266.38. The Shanghai Composite index added 0.1% to 4,131.98. In South Korea, the Kospi extended its gains, rising 1% to 5,354.49.Australias S&P/ASX 200 climbed 1.7% to 9,014.80, while Taiwans Taiex jumped 1.6%.Indias Sensex edged 0.1% lower. In energy trading Wednesday, U.S. benchmark crude oil gained $1.36 to $65.32 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, climbed $1.41 to $70.21 per barrel. The price of gold rose 1.6% while silver was up 6.3%. Bitcoin lost 2.5% to 67,091.34. Letters from a WWII soldier to his sweetheart offer an intimate picture of love during wartime
An envelope from a Black soldier stationed in Alabama written to his wife in Nashville in 1942 shows a stamp that says "Idle Gossip Sinks Ships" Monday, Feb. 9, 2026 in Nashville, Tenn. (AP Photo/Kristin M. Hall)2026-02-11T05:06:34Z NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Highlights from a trove of more than 200 love letters that tell the story of a couples courtship and marriage during World War II are now on display digitally through the Nashville Public Library, offering an intimate picture of love during wartime. The letters by William Raymond Whittaker and Jane Dean were found in a Nashville home that had belonged to Jane and her siblings. They were donated in 2016 to the Metro Nashville Archives.Whittaker, who went by Ray, was from New Rochelle, New York. He moved to the Tennessee capital to attend the historically Black Meharry Medical College, according to the librarys metropolitan archivist, Kelley Sirko. Thats where he met and dated Jane, another student at the college. The pair lost touch when Ray left Nashville. In the summer of 1942 he was drafted into the Army. Stationed at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, he decided to reestablish contact with Jane, who was then working as a medical lab technician at Vanderbilt University. A pleasant and sad surpriseThe library doesnt have Rays first letter to Jane, but it does have her reply. She greets him somewhat formally as Dear Wm R.It sure was a pleasant and sad surprise to hear from you, she writes on July 30, 1942. Pleasant because you will always hold a place in my heart and its nice to know you think of me once in a while. Sad because you are in the armed forces maybe I shouldnt say that but war is so uncertain, however Im proud to know that you are doing your bit for your country.Jane then goes on to list perhaps as a hint? a string of mutual acquaintances who have gotten married recently, noting those who have had children or are rumored to be having children. She signs off, Write, wire or call me real soon Lovingly Jane.A story told in lettersYou cant help but smile when you read through these letters, Sirko said. You really cant. And this was just such an intimate look at two regular people during a really complicated time in our history.Sirko said Nashville archivists have not been able to locate any living relatives of Ray and Jane, so most of what they know about them is from the letters. The couple did not have any children, according to an obituary for Ray, who died in Nashville in 1989. The donation also included a few photographs and Rays patch from the historically Black fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha. Beyond a love story, the collection gives this in-the-moment perspective of ... what its like just navigating certain racial issues, certain gender issues, their work, the life of a soldier, all of these things, Sirko said. Thats why the archivists wanted to make it more accessible to the public. Love and doubtsJust two months after the first letters, the romance has heated up. Ray has been assigned to Fort McClellan in Alabama, where he will help organize the reactivated and segregated 92nd Infantry Division, which went on to see combat in Europe. In an undated letter from September 1942, he tells Jane, I have something very important to tell you when I do see you and you will be surprise to know as to what it is. I might even ask you to marry me. One never knows. He teases her by saying that if he goes to officer training school, he will be able to draw down a fat juicey salary about $280 a month if he is married and $175 if single. Really I cant leave my excess amount of money to the government and must have someone to help me spend it, he writes. At first Jane is skeptical. What makes you think you still love me? she asks on Sept. 23. Is it that you are lonesome and a long way from home. Im sure I want you to love me but not under those conditions. A Sept. 24 letter from Ray is more serious. Events are changing so rapidly these days that one cant really plan for the future. But I am going to make a decisive decision in matters of most importances, he writes. Ray says that he had thought he and Jane could not be together because they lived so far apart. He says he dated other women but I didnt find the companionship and love that I so dearly wanted to find. All I ran into was trouble and more trouble. A darling husbandSoon Ray wins her over, and they are married on Nov. 7 in Birmingham. In a letter from Nov. 9, Jane addresses Ray as my darling husband. She is rapturous about the marriage but sad that the couple has to remain apart for now. She has already returned to her job and family in Nashville while he has returned to the Army base. Its a wonderful thing to have such and sweet and lovely husband. Darling youll never know how much I love you. The only regret is that we didnt marry years ago... As it is now things are so uncertain and we are not together but such a few happy hours. But maybe this old war will soon be over and we can be together for always. She concludes, Darling be sweet and write to me soon. I want a letter from my husband. Remember Ill always love you. Canada in shock after one of the countrys worst mass shootings
This grab from video shows students exiting the Tumbler Ridge school after deadly shootings, in British Columbia, Canada, Tuesday Feb. 10, 2026. (Jordon Kosik via AP)2026-02-11T15:00:38Z VANCOUVER, Canada (AP) Canadians were in shock Wednesday after one of the countrys deadliest mass shootings as authorities said seven people were killed at a school in remote northern British Columbia and two others were killed at a nearby home. A woman that police believed was the shooter was found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted wound.Royal Canadian Mounted Police said more than 25 people were wounded in Tuesdays shooting, including two who were airlifted for medical care with life-threatening injuries.Tumbler Ridge in the Canadian Rockies is more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) northeast of Vancouver, near the provincial border with Alberta. The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students from grades 7 to 12.Parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you and Canada stands by you, an emotional Prime Minister Mark Carney said as he arrived in Parliament. Carney said flags at government buildings across the country will be flown at half-staff for seven days, adding: We will get through this. School shootings are rare in Canada, which has strict gun control laws. The government has responded to previous mass shootings with gun control measures, including a recently broadened ban on all guns it considers assault weapons. Tuesdays shootings were Canadas deadliest rampage since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that left another nine dead.Carneys office said he was suspending a planned trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Munich, Germany. He had been set to announce a long-awaited defense industrial strategy in Halifax on Wednesday before heading to Europe for the Munich Security Conference.British Columbia Premier David Eby told reporters that police officers reached the school within two minutes. A video showed students walking out with hands raised as police vehicles surrounded the building and a helicopter circled overhead.Police found six people dead, RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said. A seventh person died while being transported to a hospital, and two more were found dead at a residence the authorities believe was connected to the attack. A suspect appeared to have died of a self-inflicted injury.Floyd told reporters that investigators had identified a female suspect but would not release a name, and that the shooters motive remained unclear. He said police are investigating the connection between the shooter and the victims.Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka said it was devastating to learn how many had died in the community of 2,700, which he called a big family.I broke down, Krakowka said. I have lived here for 18 years. I probably know every one of the victims. The Rev. George Rowe of the Tumbler Ridge Fellowship Baptist Church went to the recreation center where victims families were awaiting more information. It was not a pretty sight. Families are still waiting to hear if its their child thats deceased and because of protocol and procedure, the investigating team is very careful in releasing names, Rowe said Tuesday. The big thing tonight was my having to walk away and the families still waiting to find out. It is so difficult. Other pastors and counselors are there, so they are not alone. Rowe once taught at the high school and his three children graduated from there. To walk through the corridors of that school will never be the same again, he said. The school district said the high school and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed for the rest of the week.Eby on Tuesday said he had spoken to the prime minister about the unimaginable tragedy.I know its causing us all to hug our kids a little bit tighter tonight, he said. Im asking the people of British Columbia to look after the people of Tumbler Ridge tonight.___Gillies reported from Toronto. RSShttps://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Alex Murdaugh continues to insist he didnt kill wife and son as he gets another day in court
Alex Murdaugh cries as he addresses the court during his sentencing for stealing from 18 clients, Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at the Beaufort County Courthouse in Beaufort, S.C. (Andrew J. Whitaker/The Post And Courier via AP, Pool, File)2026-02-11T05:12:26Z COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Alex Murdaugh has admitted he is a thief, a liar, an insurance cheat, a drug addict and a bad lawyer. But even from behind bars he continues to adamantly deny he is a killer.Murdaughs lawyers will appear Wednesday before the South Carolina Supreme Court, asking the justices to overturn the two murder convictions and life sentence Murdaugh is serving for the shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie, and younger son, Paul, outside their home in June 2021.The defense argues the trial judge made rulings that prevented a fair trial, like allowing in evidence of Murdaugh stealing from clients that had nothing to do with the killings but biased jurors against him. They detail the lack of physical evidence no DNA or blood was found splattered on Murdaugh or any of his clothes even though the killings were at close range with powerful weapons that were never found. And they said the court clerk assigned to oversee evidence and the jury in the case influenced jurors to find Murdaugh guilty to help her sell a book about the case. She has since pleaded guilty to lying about what she said and did to a different judge. Murdaugh wont leave prisonIts a case that continues to captivate. There are streaming miniseries, best selling books and dozens of true crime podcasts about how the multimillionaire Southern lawyer whose family dominated and controlled the legal system in tiny Hampton County ended up in a maximum security South Carolina prison.Even if Murdaugh wins this appeal, he isnt going anywhere. Hanging over the 57-year-olds head is a 40-year federal prison sentence for stealing more than $12 million from clients intended for their medical care and living expenses after they suffered devastating injuries in accidents or their relatives after their deaths. Wednesdays state Supreme Court hearing will feature the same lawyers who squared off at Murdaughs six-week murder trial in 2023. The justices have set aside 90 minutes, although chances are very good it will run long. Briefs from both sides blew past the 100 pages typically allowed for appeals. While pointed questions may indicate which way the justices are leaning, there will be no immediate decision. Rulings usually take months to be handed down. Prosecutors reiterate evidence for convictionProsecutors have said in court papers there is no reason to throw out the guilty verdicts for murder against Murdaugh. They carefully recounted the case for the first 34 pages of their brief. Murdaughs financial situation was crumbling as he stole from clients to repay his mounting debts from his drug habit and expensive tastes. He defrauded his insurance company when a longtime family employee fell and died at their home and was financially vulnerable when Paul Murdaugh caused a boat crash that killed a teen. The brief recalls evidence that helped convict Alex Murdaugh, who told investigators for months he hadnt seen his wife and son for about an hour before they were killed. That story went unchallenged until investigators cracked the passcode on Paul Murdaughs phone and found a video with a barking dog and Alex Murdaughs voice admonishing it five minutes before the young man stopped using his phone. The verdict in this case was the product of six intense weeks of trial. There was superb advocacy on both sides. An eminent trial judge presided over the proceedings. No rational juror could have received the evidence in this case and concluded Appellant was not guilty, wrote the lawyers from the state Attorney Generals Office who tried the case. Defense says court allowed an unfair trialAlex Murdaughs lawyers plan to argue Wednesday that several decisions by trial judge Clifton Newman allowed evidence that led to an unfair trial. They said the chief investigator in the case lied to the grand jury that indicted Murdaugh by telling them the ammunition used in one of the killings was found in other guns at the Murdaugh home and that blood spatter was found on Murdaughs clothes. The appeal also focused on former Colleton County Clerk of Court Mary Rebecca Becky Hill. She pleaded guilty in December to obstruction of justice and perjury for showing a reporter photographs that were sealed court exhibits in Murdadughs case and then lying about it.In the insular world of South Carolina, the state Supreme Courts decision could have impacts well beyond courtrooms. Sitting at the prosecution table on Wednesday with the chief litigator in the case will be Republican South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, a candidate in Novembers election for the open governors seat. JEFFREY COLLINS Collins covers South Carolina from Columbia for The Associated Press. He has been with the AP since 2000. twitter mailto

'The Most Dejected Ive Ever Felt:' Harassers Made Nude AI Images of Her, Then Started an OnlyFans
In the first week of January, Kylie Brewer started getting strange messages.Someone has a only fans page set up in your name with this same profile, one direct message from a stranger on TikTok said. Do you have 2 accounts or is someone pretending to be you, another said. And from a friend: Hey girl I hate to tell you this, but I think theres some picture of you going around. Maybe AI or deep fake but they dont look real. Uncanny valley kind of but either way Im sorry. It was the first week of January, during the frenzy of people using xAIs chatbot and image generator Grok to create images of women and children partially or fully nude in sexually explicit scenarios. Between the last week of 2025 and the first week of 2026, Grok generated about three million sexualized images, including 23,000 that appear to depict children, according to researchers at the Center for Countering Digital Hate. The UKs Ofcom and several attorneys general have since launched or demanded investigations into X and Grok. Earlier this month, police raided Xs offices in France as part of the governments investigation into child sexual abuse material on the platform.Messages from strangers and acquaintances are often the first way targets of abuse imagery learn that images of them are spreading online. Not only is the material disturbing itself everyone, it seems, has already seen it. Someone was making sexually explicit images of Brewer, and then, according to her followers who sent her screenshots and links to the account, were uploading them to an OnlyFans and charging a subscription fee for them.It was the most dejected that I've ever felt, Brewer told me in a phone call. I was like, let's say I tracked this person down. Someone else could just go into X and use Grok and do the exact same thing with different pictures, right? @kylie.brewer Please help me raise awareness and warn other women. We NEED to regulate AI its getting too dangerous #leftist #humanrights #lgbtq #ai #saawareness original sound - Kylie Brewer Brewer is a content creator whose work focuses on feminism, history, and education about those topics. Shes no stranger to online harassment. Being an outspoken woman about these and other issues through a leftist lens means shes faced the brunt of large-scale harassment campaigns primarily from the manosphere, including red pilled incels and right-wing influencers with podcasts for years. But when people messaged her in early January about finding an OnlyFans page in her name, featuring her likeness, it felt like an escalation. One of the AI generated images was based on a photo of her in a swimsuit from her Instagram, she said. Someone used AI to remove her clothing in the original photo. My eyes look weird, and my hands are covering my face so it kind of looks like my face got distorted, and they very clearly tried to give me larger breasts, where it does not look like anything realistic at all, Brewer said. Another image showed her in a seductive pose, kneeling or crawling, but wasnt based on anything shes ever posted online. Unlike the nudify one that relied on Grok, it seemed to be a new image made with a prompt or a combination of images. Many of the people messaging her about the fake OnlyFans account were men trying to get access to it. By the time she clicked a link one of them sent of the account, it was already gone. OnlyFans prohibits deepfakes and impersonation accounts. The platform did not respond to a request for comment. But OnlyFans isnt the only platform where this can happen: Non-consensual deepfake makers use platforms like Patreon to monetize abusive imagery of real people.I think that people assume, because the pictures aren't real, that it's not as damaging, Brewer told me. But if anything, this was worse because it just fills you with such a sense of lack of control and fear that they could do this to anyone. Children, women, literally anyone, someone could take a picture of you at the store, going grocery shopping, and ask AI or whatever to do this.A lack of control is something many targets of synthetic abuse imagery say they feel and it can be especially intense for people whove experienced sexual abuse in real life. In 2023, after becoming the target of deepfake abuse imagery, popular Twitch streamer QTCinderella told me seeing sexual deepfakes of herself resurfaced past trauma. You feel so violatedI was sexually assaulted as a child, and it was the same feeling, she said at the time. Like, where you feel guilty, you feel dirty, you feel like, what just happened? And its bizarre that it makes that resurface. I genuinely didnt realize it would.Other targets of deepfake harassment also feel like this could happen anytime, anywhere, whether youre at the grocery store or posting photos of your body online. For some, it makes it harder to get jobs or have a social life; the fear that anyone could be your harasser is constant. It's made me incredibly wary of men, which I know isn't fair, but [my harasser] could literally be anyone, Joanne Chew, another woman who dealt with severe deepfake harassment for months, told me last year. And there are a lot of men out there who don't see the issue. They wonder why we aren't flattered for the attention.I Want to Make You Immortal: How One Woman Confronted Her Deepfakes HarasserAfter discovering this content, Im not going to lie there are times it made me not want to be around any more either, she said. I literally felt buried.404 MediaSamantha ColeBrewers income is dependent on being visible online as a content creator. Logging off isnt an option. And even for people who arent dependent on TikTok or Instagram for their income, removing oneself from online life is a painful and isolating tradeoff that they shouldnt have to make to avoid being harassed. Often, minimizing ones presence and accomplishments doesnt even stop the harassment.Since AI-generated face-swapping algorithms became accessible at the consumer level in late 2017, the technology has only gotten better, more realistic, and its effects on targets harder to combat. It was always used for this purpose: to shame and humiliate women online. Over the years, various laws have attempted to protect victims or hold platforms accountable for non-consensual deepfakes, but most of them have either fallen short or present new risks of censorship and marginalize legal, consensual sexual speech and content online. The TAKE IT DOWN Act, championed by Ted Cruz and Melania Trump, passed into law in April 2025 as the first federal level legislation to address deepfakes; the law imposes a strict 48-hour turnaround requirement on platforms to remove reported content. President Donald Trump said that he would use the law, because nobody gets treated worse online than him. And in January, the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits (DEFIANCE) Act passed the Senate and is headed to the House. The act would allow targets of deepfake harassment to sue the people making the content. But taking someone to court has always been a major barrier to everyday people experiencing harassment online; Its expensive and time consuming even if they can pinpoint their abuser. In many cases, including Brewers, this is impossibleit could be an army of people set to make her life miserable. It feels like any remote sense of privacy and protection that you could have as a woman is completely gone and that no one cares, Brewer said. Its genuinely such a dehumanizing and horrible experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone... Im hoping also, as there's more visibility that comes with this, maybe theres more support, because it definitely is a very lonely and terrible place to be on the internet as a woman right now.
