WWW.404MEDIA.COThe 800-Year-Old Mystery of a Lost Medieval Legend Is Solved, Researchers SaySubscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week. A major mystery about a long-lost legend that was all the rage in Medieval England but survives in only one known fragment has been solved, according to a study published on Tuesday in The Review of English Studies.Roughly 800 years ago, a legend known today as the Song of Wade was a blockbuster hit for English audiences. Mentions of the heroic character showed up in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, for example. But the tale vanished from the literature centuries later, puzzling generations of scholars who have tried to track down its origin and intent. Now, for the first time, researchers say theyve deciphered its true meaningwhich flies in the face of the existing interpretation. It is one of these really interesting and very unusual situations where we have a legend that was widely known and hugely popular throughout the Middle Ages, and then very suddenly in the middle of the 16th century, in the High Renaissance, it's just completely lost, said James Wade, fellow in English at Girton College, University of Cambridge, who co-authored the study. In 1896, the Medieval scholar M.R. James made a breakthrough on this literary cold case when he discovered a fragment of the Song of Wade in the Humiliamini sermon, which is part of a compendium that dates back to the 12th century. James brought the text to his colleague Israel Gollancz, a philologist with expertise in early English literature, and together they worked on a translation. It is the only surviving fragment of the Song of Wade, said co-author Seb Falk, fellow in history and philosophy of science also at Girton College. Obviously it had been around already for a while by the time this was written because it's part of the culture. The person who writes this sermon clearly expects his listeners to understand it and to know what he's talking about.James and Gollancz knew there was no surviving text and they understood what they were looking at, added Wade. This was big news. It made the papers in 1896.But while the 19th century scholars recovered the sermon, their translation only deepened the mystery of the enigmatic text. For instance, references to elves and sprites in the translation suggest that the Song of Wade falls into a genre of fantastical epics about supernatural monsters. But when Chaucer references Wade in his works Troilus and Criseyde and The Merchants Tale, he places the character in a totally different tradition of chivalric romances which are rich with metaphors, but typically favor more grounded scenarios.Chaucers mentions of Wade have perplexed scholars for centuries: in 1598, for instance, an early Chaucer editor named Thomas Speght wrote: Concerning Wade and his [boat] called Guingelot, as also his strange exploits in the same, because the matter is long and fabulous, I passe it over. In other words, Speght didnt even try to decipher what Chaucer meant with his references to Wade. This punt has become legendary in literary circles. F. N. Robinson wrote in 1933 that Speghts comment has often been called the most exasperating note ever written on Chaucer, and Richard Firth Green observed that Speghts note has caused generations of scholars to tear their hair out, Wade and Falk write in their new study. In 1936, the scholar Jack Bennett "supposed that there is probably no better known crux in Chaucer than the tale of Wade, the pair added.A few years ago, Wade and Falk set out to see if they could shed light on this famous and persistent riddle. Like so many good ideas, it began over a lunchtime conversation. From there, the team slowly and methodically worked through the sermon, scrutinizing each letter and rune.Just trying to decipher the thing took quite a lot of worktranscribing it and then making an initial translation, Falk said. But I started realizing there's some really interesting material here from my point of view, as a historian of science, with lots of animals mentioned, both in Middle English and in Latin. As the pair worked through the text, they began to suspect that the scribe who originally copied the work may not have been very familiar with Middle English, leading to some transcription errors with certain runes. In particular, they found that the longstanding translation of elves and sprites were, in their view, more likely to be wolves and sea snakes. This transforms a key Song of Wade passage, Some are elves and some are adders; some are sprites that dwell by waters, to:Some are wolves and some are adders; some are sea-snakes that dwell by the water. It may seem like a subtle shift, but it is a major sea change for the interpretation of the text. The switch to animals, as opposed to supernatural beings, suggests that the preacher who wrote the sermon was using animals as metaphors for human vices and behaviorsa reading that provides a much better fit for the overall sermon, and at last explains why Chaucer viewed Wade in the tradition of chivalry. It became pretty clear to us that the scribe had probably made some kind of a mistake because he was used to writing Latin rather than English, Falk said. We're not here to say that people who read it differently previously were stupid to miss it, but I think by looking at it from the outside in, we got a different perspective. It then radically changes the meaning of the passage from being about monsters to being about animals, and therefore, changes it from being a piece about mythical beasts to a piece about courtly romance, he added. In addition to relieving centuries-old headaches over the legend, Wade and Falk also speculate that the sermon was originally written by English poet and abbot Alexander Neckam (11571217), based on its style and context clues. For the researchers, the thrill of the discovery lies not only in decoding the fragment, but in recovering a missing piece of cultural memory. While their new translation and attribution to Neckam are both tentative and may be disputed by other scholars, the study still opens a window into a long-lost legend and shows how fresh eyes can uncover insights in even the most perplexing fragments.By putting a completely different slant on it and, we think, understanding it properly, we have come much closer to the true meaning of the Wade legend, Falk said. Now, obviously we've only got three lines of this presumably much longer poem, and therefore, we can't pretend that we understand the thing in full, but I think we can understand it much better than we ever have before. It reminds us that as time moves on, there's always the possibility of generational amnesia, of forgetting things, of losing things, and that when you have a chance to get a little bit back of something that humanity has lost, or that culture has lost, it's a really exciting moment, Wade concluded.Subscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMThe Trevor Project saved my life. Now its losing millions in federal funding thanks to Trump.Have you ever hated yourself so much that you prayed to be someone else?I did. Every night. Related Trump admin. set to end LGBTQ+ youth suicide hotline to stop radical gender ideology & grooming The administration is using anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric to justify abandoning queer youth in distress. As a closeted gay teen growing up in a deeply religious household, I spent years trying to pray the gay away. I thought that was the only way I could be worthy of love. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Now, Im an Advocacy Manager for The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people. But before I ever held that title, I was struggling with depression, shame, and constant thoughts that the world might be better off without me. I wondered if there was anyone out there who could possibly understand what I was going through.Today, Im devastated to share that theTrump administration has eliminated The Trevor Projects partnership with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. That means LGBTQ+ young people who reach out to 988 our countrys three-digit federal suicide prevention crisis line will no longer be able to connect with trained, affirming counselors who understand the unique needs of LGBTQ+ youth. At The Trevor Project, this move will halve our ability to serve youth in crisis. This isnt just a funding cut. Its a dangerous, life-threatening blow to kids who already feel like they have nowhere to turn.I know that feeling. Ive lived it. I grew up in a hardworking, loving household. My mom gave her all to ensure I had opportunities she never did. She worked three jobs to put me through private Catholic school, believing with her whole heart that it would give me the future she never got. What none of us saw coming was how much that environment would chip away at me.My school was deeply conservative and made clear that kids like me didnt belong. They would fire gay teachers, ban same-sex dates at prom, and preach against homosexuality in our mandatory religion classes. During the 2012 election season, I heard over the intercom:We all have a moral duty to vote for a candidate who champions traditional marriage. That same week, I was outed.A girl passed around a Most Likely to be Gay list. I was number one. A friend I trusted let something slip. By lunch, I could feel it the whispers, the glances, the judgment. No one needed to say anything. The silence said it all. I was the only openly gay student at my school. And I felt completely alone.I couldnt bring it home. My mom was already sacrificing so much. So I turned inward. I sought out priests. I confessed. I prayed ten times a day for God to take it away. Nothing changed. I hated myself for it.The self-hatred became unbearable. I stopped eating. I barely slept. I remember lying awake at night, heart pounding, thinking maybe not waking up would be easier.Eventually, I broke. I confided in my English teacher, who told me I needed to tell my mom. So I did.I got on the family desktop and printed out a How to Come Out guide I found online something that answered common questions parents tend to ask. I didnt have the words, so I hoped this guide did. I folded the pages into tiny scraps I could hide in my pocket. I was terrified. When I finally told her, she bawled. In her fear, she said things that hit hard. She warned me Id get HIV.She walked out of the house and went for a drive.I locked myself in the bathroom, overwhelmed, sobbing until I got sick. At the time, it felt like rejection. But it wasnt hate; it was fear.Id later understand that it wasnt because she hated gay people, and it wasnt because she didnt love me. It was the opposite, actually; it wasbecause she loved me so much. My mom had spent her whole life hearing stories on the news, in church, in the media that being gay meant youd end up bullied, sick, abandoned, or dead. To her, being gay was a death sentence. She grieved for a future she thought her son would never have. That was love tangled up in fear. I had never met another openly gay person. I was so scared and alone, and I had no one around me who understood what I was going through. To me, that didnt feel like a life worth living. One night, I Googled, Is it okay to be gay? and discovered a phone number 1-866-488-7386 The Trevor Projects crisis number. When I called that number, I spoke with someone on the other end of the line who really got it. For the first time, I felt like someone understood me.That space didnt just help me. It saved me.Over time, many of my friends surprised me with their support. Today, my mom hugs strangers at Pride festivals. And I did something I once thought Id never be allowed to dream of: I married the love of my life, my husband, Tony. But without The Trevor Project, I might never have known that love, or any kind of love, was possible for someone like me.I share this story to try to help people understand what it really means that the Trump administration has ended the 988 Lifelines LGBTQ+ youth specialized services program. Through 988, more than 1.5 million LGBTQ+ young people have received the same life-saving services that I did. But starting July 17th, those services will disappear. Especially in these polarizing political times, we need more resources that effectively help young people navigate crises, not less.To be clear, The Trevor Projects 24/7 crisis services will remain available for any young person who needs help or support. However, the administrations decision to end LGBTQ+ specialized services through 988 means that The Trevor Project will lose millions of dollars in federal funds, shrinking our ability to support the increasing volume of young people who need us. This should be a time of progress. Its been more than 10 years since I came out. And yet, queer kids today are more afraid to be themselves at school than many of us were a decade ago.We should be moving forward, not tearing down the few safe places weve fought so hard to build.Ending suicide is about people, not politics. Regardless of how we feel on LGBTQ+ issues, we all want to ensure the health and safety of young people. So please. If youve ever needed a lifeline, or just believe no kid should have to walk through the world alone, sign the petition to protect our 988 line, and donate if you can. One day, a scared kid is going to Google,Is it okay to be queer?and pray the internet gives them hope. Lets make sure The Trevor Project is still there to answer. If this story affected you, just know you are not alone. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMDems call out Trump administrations unconscionable cruelty as federal LGBTQ+ suicide hotline endsLGBTQ+ advocates are calling out the cruelty of the Trump administration as today marks the end of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifelines LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services program, which provides emergency crisis support for LGBTQ+ youth at risk of suicide. While the hotline will remain accessible, LGBTQ+ youth will no longer be redirected to specialized crisis counselors who can help them work through their unique challenges. The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ youth suicide hotline, has long worked with the federal government for this specialized program and has said it will lose millions of dollars in federal funding due to the canceled partnership. Related The Trevor Project saved my life. Now its losing millions in federal funding thanks to Trump. One day a scared kid will Google,Is it okay to be queer? Lets make sure The Trevor Project is still there to answer. Out Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS) called the move heartbreaking, scary, and deeply harmful. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Every single person is important, she told Advocate. Its unconscionable that leaders arent pushing back against this decision that will cost lives. In a statement, gay Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) called out Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for failing to keep his promise to meet with Pocan about the issue. The press release says Kennedy stated during a May 14, 2025, House Appropriations Committee hearing that he was happy to talk about it more with Pocan but has since ignored his offices multiple attempts to set something up.This hotline has already saved countless lives, Pocan said. Unfortunately, in June, Secretary Kennedys agency announced plans to terminate the dedicated LGBTQ+ lifeline by July 17, 2025. Since that announcement, my office has reached out multiple times to request a meeting with him to discuss this proposed plan, based on his prior agreement to speak, but we have been unable to get a response. This shortsighted and dangerous plan undermines 988s ability to provide tailored support for a population with a higher risk of suicide and will have lethal consequences if enacted. I urge the Secretary to meet expeditiously to discuss this further. In May, over 100 House Democratssigned a letterto Secretary Kennedy asking him to reconsider his ill-advised and dangerous plan to eliminate the funding. The letter was similar toone issuedby seven Democratic U.S. senators requesting the same thing. The letters noted that LGBTQ+ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers, and that the 988 hotline for LGBTQ+ youth has recently received an average of 2,100 contacts per day and, since 2022, it has received over 1.3 million calls, texts, and chats. Theres proof that the anti-LGBTQ+ policies of the current presidential administration are increasing feelings of suicidality among queer youth. Calls into The Trevor Projects suicide prevention servicesincreased by 33% on Inauguration Daycompared to weeks prior, and there was also a 700% increase on November 6, 2024, the day after the presidential election. An HHS spokesperson told Advocate that canceling the specialized service was merely a funding issue. The Press 3 option is managed by a third party outside of the federal government. As of June 2025, more than $33 million in funds have been spent, fully exhausting the Congressionally directed funds allocated for LGB+ subnetwork services. They claimed that maintaining the subline would have meant moving some funds from the main line, thereby compromising the entire system. The 988 Lifeline will continue to be a direct connection to immediate support for all Americans, regardless of their circumstances, they said. That has not changed. This, however, is inconsistent with a previous statement from the administration. [The newly proposed budget] does not grant taxpayer money to a chat service where children are encouraged to embrace radical gender ideology by counselors without consent or knowledge of their parents, Rachel Cauley, a spokesperson for the White Houses Office of Management and Budget, said in June. The administration also somehow found billions of extra dollars to allocate toward Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The One Big Beautiful Bill dedicates $75 billion to the agency which the administration is using to terrorize Hispanic communities over the next four years, marking an increase in its annual budget from $8.7 billion to a whopping $27.7 billion. The Independent pointed out that ICEs budget is now larger than that of most militaries in the world. And yet, somehow, there is not enough money to protect LGBTQ+ youth. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPete Buttigiegs replacement had the dumbest answer to a key question about air traffic controllersSecretary of Transportation Sean Duffy a former reality TV and Fox News personality had a bizarre interaction at a congressional hearing where he said he didnt even know how many air traffic controllers have left the workforce this year. Can you tell this committee how many air traffic controllers have left the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] since January 20, 2025? Rep. Hank Johnson Jr (D-GA) asked Duffy at a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee yesterday. Please dont tell me you dont know. Well, Im just speaking figuratively, Johnson responded charitably. JOHNSON: How many air traffic controllers have left the FAA since January 20? The administration fired the head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and dismissedall members of the Aviation Security Advisory Committeein January as well. At the same time, Elon Musk offered numerous federal workers buyouts. The workers may have included air traffic controllers, despite the massive shortage of them in the U.S.The administration contacted air traffic controllers, offering buyouts to leave their jobs, former Transportation Secretary and Duffys predecessor Pete Buttigieg said in February. Its a very easily proven fact. Now they claim the controllers arent eligible for buyouts after all, Buttigieg said at the time. What changed? Why were they sent the offer? At best and this is being generous it was disturbingly sloppy, in a field which demands precision and competence. The air traffic controller crisis has been building for years, in part because many air traffic controllers started their careers at the same time in 1982 when President Ronald Reagan brought them on to replace controllers who were on strike. The Biden administration, according to the New Republic, tried to increase the pace of hiring air traffic controllers but was only able to replace those who were retiring. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) now reports that there are only 10,800 controllers working in the U.S., despite an estimated 14,600 being needed for the industry to be fully staffed. NATCA President Nick Daniels states that 41% of controllers are working six days a week and 10 hours a day to fulfill the workload that a full staff would typically handle. Buttigieg spent part of the Biden administration begging Congress for more money to authorize the hiring of 2000 more controllers. We need more, and were hiring more,Buttigieg said in April 2024on MSNBC after he requested the funding. If you look at just a chart over the last 30 years or so, the number of air traffic controllers has gone down and down and down, until recently where we finally got that number going up.We hired 1,500, then 1,800 in this year. Were requesting a budget from Congress and let us hire 2,000 next year so that you dont have as much of this concern about controllers being overworked. These controllers are pros, and its extraordinary what they do, but we need to support them for that very reason, with the right kind of space between their shifts with more controllers coming into their ranks, and importantly, with better technology.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.404MEDIA.COFlight Manifests Reveal Dozens of Previously Unknown People on Three Deportation Flights to El SalvadorThe flight manifests for three legally contested deportation flights from Texas to El Salvador contain dozens of additional, unaccounted for passengers than a previously published Department of Homeland Security (DHS) list of people deported from the United States on those flights, 404 Media has learned. The additional people on the flight manifest have not been publicly acknowledged by the U.S. government in any way, and immigration experts who have been closely monitoring Trumps deportation campaign say they have no idea where these people are or what happened to them. 404 Media is now publishing the names of these people. On March 15, the Trump administration deported more than 200 people on three aircraft to a megaprison in El Salvador. A judge blocked the deportations, but hours later the flights still landed in the country. It marked one of the major turning points of the administrations mass deportation efforts, and signaled what was to come around the countrya lack of due process, authorities ignoring judges rulings, and deporting people on the flimsiest of pretenses. Soon after these flights, CBS News published an internal government list of people it said were deported to CECOT, the notorious El Salvadorian megaprison. But in May, a hacker targeted GlobalX, the airline that operated these flights and shared the data with 404 Media. In addition to the names of people who were on the list CBS News published, the GlobalX flight manifests contain the names of dozens of people who were supposedly on the flights but whose status and existence has not been acknowledged by the U.S. government or previously reported in the press. We have this list of people that the U.S. government has not formally acknowledged in any real way and we pretty much have no idea if they are in CECOT or someplace else, or whether they received due process, Michelle Bran, executive director of Together and Free, a group that has been working with families of deported people, told 404 Media. I think this further demonstrates the callousness and lack of due process involved and is further evidence that the US government is disappearing people. These people were detained and no one knows where they are, and we don't know the circumstances [] For almost all of these people, theres no records whatsoever. No court records, nothing.Do you know anything else about these people or flights? We would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message Jason securely on Signal at jason.404 or send an email to jason@404media.co. You can Signal Joseph at joseph.404 or email joseph@404media.co.[The government is] not disclosing it and theyve presumably been sent to a prison or sent somewhere by the U.S. government on a plane and have never been heard from since, she added. We have not heard from these peoples families, so I think perhaps even they dont know.Bran added that it remains entirely unclear whether all of these people were actually on the flights or why they were on the manifests. If they were indeed on the flights, it is unknown where they currently are. That uncertainty, and the unwillingness of the U.S. government to provide any clarity about these people, is a major problem, she said. While the stories of some of the people deported on these flights have garnered a lot of attention, such as Kilmar Abrego Garcia, U.S. authorities have refused to reveal the names of everyone on board. While the whereabouts and circumstances of most of these people remain unknown, Brans organization used publicly available data to try to better understand who they are. In some cases, Together and Free was able to identify a few details about specific people on the manifest. For example, one person on the manifest appears to have been arrested by local police in Texas in late December on drug possession charges and is listed in arrest records as being an illegal alien. Another person was arrested in Nashville in February on charges of driving without a license. For many other people listed, there is no easily discernible public data about who they are or why they appeared on the flight manifest.Several other people are on the flight manifests and do not appear on the CBS News list, but their identities had already become public because their families have filed lawsuits or have been looking for them on social media. These include Abrego Garcia and Ricardo Prada Vsquez, a man whose family said he was disappeared because he did not appear on any official, publicly published lists. After the New York Times published an article about his disappearance, the Trump administration said he was at CECOT, and 404 Media was able to find his name on the March 15 flight manifests. In Venezuela, the family of another man who appears on the flight manifests but not on the CBS News list, Keider Alexander Flores Navas, has been protesting his disappearance and demanding answers. In a TikTok video posted in March, his mother Ana Navas explains that they suddenly stopped hearing from Keider before the March 15 flights. She said she eventually heard he was in federal detention. Then, she saw a photo of him in CECOT amongst a group of other prisoners: The thing that worried me the most was he was not on any list. But this photo is from El Salvador. Lots of family members here recognize their sons [in official CECOT photos]. Thats my son, she says, the camera panning to a circled image of Keider in CECOT.In another TikTok video posted in June, the mother of 21-year-old Brandon Sigaran-Cruz explains that he had been disappeared for three months with no news of his whereabouts. Sigaran-Cruz also appears on the flight manifest but not the CBS News list. The U.S. government previously acknowledged that, along with more than 200 Venezuelan citizens, it deported 23 Salvadorans to El Salvador on the three March 15 flights. There is no formal list of the Salvadorans who were on the flight, and none of them appeared on the CBS News list, which included only Venezuelan citizens. The United Nations Human Rights Office has also filed court petitions saying that it is investigating the involuntary disappearances of at least four Venezuelans who were sent to El Salvador on these flights. Neither the Government of El Salvador nor the Government of the United States has published official information on the list of deported persons or their current place of detention, the United Nations said in a Report on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances it filed in court. There continues to be very little clarity as to the fate and whereabouts of the Venezuelans removed to El Salvador. To date, no official lists of the deported detainees have been published. Provision of further information by authorities is key, including providing families and their counsel with available information on the specific situation and whereabouts of their loved ones, Elizabeth Throssell, a spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, told 404 Media in an email. The UN Human Rights Office has been in contact with family members of over 100 Venezuelans believed to have been deported to El Salvador.404 Media asked the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over multiple weeks if the agency had any legitimate security concerns with these names being published, or if it could tell us anything about these people. The agency never responded, despite responding to requests for comment for other 404 Media articles. GlobalX did not respond to a request for comment either. It is critical that we know who was on these March 15 flights, Lee Gelernt, a lawyer at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the lead counsel on the ACLUs related case, told 404 Media. These individuals were sent to a gulag-type prison without any due process, possibly for the remainder of their lives, yet the government has provided no meaningful information about them, much less the evidence against them. Transparency at a time like this is essential. In recent months, the U.S. government has said that the El Salvadorian government has jurisdiction over the people detained in CECOT, while El Salvador told the United Nations that the jurisdiction and legal responsibility for these persons lie exclusively with the competent foreign authorities [the United States], leading to a situation where people are detained in a foreign prison but both responsible parties are not willing to claim legal responsibility for them. A similar situation has happened in Florida at the Alligator Alcatraz camp, where people detained by the federal government are being held in a state-run facility, and experts have said its not clear who is in charge. Bran said with the massive increase in ICE funding as part of Trumps new law, we are likely to see more detention camps, more detainments, more deportation flights, and, likely, more people who arent publicly accounted for in any way. When you look at what ICE is doing now in terms of how they treat people, how they operate when they're given even a little bit of rope, its terrifying to think what the budget increase is going to do, Bran said. This is a taste of what we're going to see on a much larger scale."You can read the list below. 404 Media has removed people listed on the flight manifests as guards (404 Media found at least one of these names matched someone who lists their employment online as a flight transport detention officer). Reportedly eight women deported to El Salvador were later returned. 404 Media is not publishing the names of women known to have returned to the U.S. The manifest also includes the names of several El Salvadorians mentioned as being deported in a White House Press release, court proceedings, and media reports. We have not included their names below because the administration has formally acknowledged that they were deported.Manuel Quijada-LeonIrvin Quintanilla-GarciaJose Ramirez-IrahetaJosue Rivera-PortilloJorge Rodriguez GomezMario Jeavanni RojasEdgar Leonel Sanchez RosalesBrandon Sigaran-CruzMiguel Enriquez SaraviaAbraham Hernandez-ManiaJean Morales-LoaizaNelson Alfaro-OrellanaJhonnarty Pachecho-ChirinosCristian Alpe-TepasJordyn Alexander AlvarezJose Alvarez GonzalezWilfredo Avendano CarrizalezJose Gregorio Buenano CantilloIstmar Campos MejiaJose Chanta-OchoaKeider Alexander Flores NavasNoe Florez-ValladaresMiguel Fuentes-LopezRoberto Interiano UcedaJose Lopez CruzDiego Maldonado-FuentesWilliam Martinez-RuanoOsmer Mejias-Ruiz Iran Ochoa SuescunDavid Orantez GonzalezAriadny Araque-CerradaElena Cuenca PalmaMaria Franco PinaMayerkis Guariman GonzalezWilmary Linares-MarcanoScarlet Mendoza PerezOfreilimar Pea BoraureEdilianny Stephany Rivero SierraltaDioneli Sanz AljornaAnyeli Sequera RamirezYanny Suarez RodriguezKarla Villasmil-Castellano0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMConservatives want to separate trans & reproductive rights. Trans men are uniting the movements. For seven years, Izi a 35-year-old nonbinary person living in the Bay Area experienced chronic pain from an intrauterine device (IUD). They had resorted to the IUD to control their intense periods, the pain of which often rendered them barely able to walk. Unlike other birth control options, the device would not interfere with the testosterone they were desperate to begin taking.Izis doctor repeatedly dismissed concerns that their pain was IUD-related, but Izi knew. And although they finally demanded its removal when they had their tubes tied, their suffering didnt end. Related Transmasculine reproductive healthcare is rarely talked about. Lets change that. Transmasculine people need information and support when it comes to abortion, pregnancy, HIV, and other sexual health topics. After all that they said the pain I was experiencing was actually residual trauma from the IUD, they explained. Even now, they still rely on physical therapy techniques to manage muscle contractions caused by having the device for so long. Amidst all of this, they also sought a hysterectomy but were denied. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today While testosterone helped reduce the severity of Izis painful periods, medical providers continued to dismiss their symptoms.[E]ven my doctors, to this day, whenever theres an issue that comes up, they like to blame it on my testosterone, and I have to always ask or talk to my endocrinologist and just make sure its not, they said.Izi has spent much of their life navigating a medical system that often fails trans people especially those who are transmasc or nonbinary.I feel like Ive just had a lot of interactions with medical professionals, and specifically around my trans identity, that have rarely been good, they said. I always have this weird feeling, or I can never tell what it is about me until much later, that its transphobia.Transmasculine people often need access to reproductive care whether contraception, IVF, hysterectomies, pregnancy support, PrEP, or treatment for conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or vaginal atrophy. Yet for Izi, as for many others, seeking that care has often meant facing roadblocks, discrimination, and systemic barriers.Conversations around reproductive rights boil down to the right of an individual to their body and the right to decide about their body. We should all be fighting for these rights, as we are all affected by themAJ Eckert, doctor for trans youth at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles[It]s a common thing that you often experience if youre trans masc or nonbinary if you have to be in OB/GYN spaces specifically, and navigating that system, and I dont think I would have been able to get through any of that, any of these experiences, without any type of community care outside of the hospitals, they said. Doctors are not as important to me as my community is.Izis experiences demonstrate how the fight for reproductive justice cannot be separated from the fight for transgender rights. Izi, Repro Masculinity Project And transmasculine people must be at the center of both.Thats the core message of the Repro Masculinity project, a powerful collaboration between photojournalist Ale Pedraza Buenahora and the Transgender Law Center. The project, through which Izi shared their story, offers a vital platform for transmasculine people to share their experiences with embodiment, bodily autonomy, and reproductive care, not as an afterthought, but as a central part of both gender-affirming healthcare and the broader struggle forreproductive justice.Buenahora started the project while working as one of the few trans people at a nationwide reproductive health clinic. There, they faced repeated censorship when raising trans issues that related to the work they were doing. There was no nuance about it, they said. There was really a lot of silos that were happening that were being created by the people working on these spaces. From talking with their friends, Buenahora found that even within clinics and advocacy organizations ostensibly committed to reproductive rights, transmasculine patients were being denied accurate and affirming information. One participant in the project, Chiron, was told by their doctor that some people on testosterone simply experience extremely painful periods that can last up to two weeks.[I]t didnt make sense. I didnt want to know what some people experience, I wanted to know what Im experiencing and why, they explained. Theres a lot to unpack and definitely a lot of experiences with having my reproductive health ignored.Another participant, Cyd, shared that they were treated for gonorrhea multiple times before doing their own research and discovering that the symptoms were actually common among people who have been on testosterone for over a decade it was vaginal atrophy, not an STI. [I]t was atrophy and the doctors had no f**king idea, he said. In short, the reproductive health industry is failing trans masculine people, with doctors seemingly caring for them the exact same way they would for cis women, despite their different needs. There is, at baseline, a lack of information about reproductive care for trans people, and misinformation is common, AJ Eckert, Attending Doctor for the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Center for Trans Youth Health and Development at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, told LGBTQ Nation. There is limited data on the sexual and reproductive health needs of trans communities, and many assumptions are made based on cisnormative and heteronormative experiences.Doctors had no idea what to do with us, Buenahora told LGBTQ Nation. So, the Reproductive Masculinity project was born out of that necessity of being like, Im having these conversations [about reproductive healthcare] in private in my living room with my friends. How do we make this into more common knowledge? Because the medical system is not doing it, nor is the movement for reproductive justice. Reproductive justice is gender-affirming careThis gap in care and advocacy has only become more urgent in the aftermath of Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization (2022), which overturned the constitutional right to abortion. In the wake of that decision, it has become increasingly clear that the fight for reproductive justice is inseparable from the broader struggle for bodily autonomy, including the right to gender-affirming care, and that these legal attacks are part of a coordinated and interconnected campaign. In fact, the same far-right organizations that fought to overturn Roe including the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Heritage Foundation, and the Family Policy Alliance are now leading the charge to ban gender-affirming care and pass sweeping anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. These groups operate with coordinated legal strategies, shared political networks, and deep institutional resources. Their end goal is clear: Restrict bodily autonomy for all, beginning with the most marginalized.Chiron, Repro Masculinity Project | Ale Pedraza Buenahora Right now, were witnessing the government strip away our bodily autonomy banning abortion, attacking trans health care, and targeting our right to exist, transgender rights activist Ash Lazarus Orr told LGBTQ Nation. These fights are deeply connected and intertwined. When abortion access is under attack, so are trans people.Orr isnt alone in seeing these attacks as inexorably connected. Buenahora told LGBTQ Nation that to them, Gender affirming care and reproductive health feel a lot like one and the same, at least when it comes to me and my other trans friends and my community. This coordinated legal agenda is already reshaping constitutional law. Recently, in U.S. v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessees ban on gender-affirming care for minors by relying on Dobbs and Geduldig v. Aiello (1974) a case that held excluding pregnancy from a state insurance plan did not amount to sex discrimination. Skrmetti is a warning: The rollback of abortion rights is just the beginning. In fact, Dobbs narrow reading of the Fourteenth Amendment limiting protections to those deeply rooted in 19th-century history now threatens access to contraception, as well as the rights to same-sex intimacy and marriage. These are the next rights on the chopping block. Theyre going to go after birth control, Buenahora told LGBTQ Nation. Theyre going to go to anything that controls reproductive systems. The erosion of the right to access birth control could further complicate an already challenging process for trans men seeking care, forcing those who can afford it to travel out of state, while leaving others to rely on less reliable methods of contraception or go without it entirely. Reclaiming space This moment demands that reproductive rights organizations explicitly include trans people within their framework. As health care ethicist Emmeline Rabelais told LGBTQ Nation, reproductive justice is necessary for everyone, because it is an equity-based human rights framework that makes it clear who needs/deserves specific and focused care.Without this lens, transmasculine people have too often been excluded from conversations about reproductive health, even as they face some of the most severe consequences of reproductive injustice.Doctors had no idea what to do with us.Ale Pedraza Buenahora, creator of the Repro Masculinity Project Trans people have been historically and continue to be marginalized and experience higher rates of discrimination, stigma, violence, prejudice, poverty, and poor social support, Eckert told LGBTQ Nation. In terms of health care, we have higher rates of violence while accessing care, lower rates of health insurance, and often experience refusal of treatment. Research shows that trans people often experience misdiagnoses and denial of care, heightened risks during pregnancy, lack of access to affirming contraception, and systemic erasure, which places their health and autonomy in jeopardy. When trans men do choose to carry a pregnancy, they often face stigma, misgendering, and a lack of informed care.It was a cookie-cutter process, and I didnt feel listened to, said Repro Masculinity Project participant Kayne. I got she/her all the time, and I never corrected anybody because I just didnt want to be a bother or whatever, so I was being misgendered all the time.Kayne, Repro Masculinity Project | Ale Pedraza Buenahora There is also a frequent refusal from medical professionals to take the experiences and symptoms of trans men seriously. After undergoing an egg retrieval procedure, Rosin, another participant, experienced chest pain and developed a persistent cough. Their symptoms were dismissed. I had an allergic reaction to the drugs, but the doctors didnt believe me, Rosin explained. It was really scary and the medical doctors told me I should take a valium or some anxiety meds because it was probably just stress. In the face of this ongoing discrimination and systemic neglect, the Repro Masculinity Project offers a vital space for community care. It feels like all our rights are being stripped away from all the sides, said Buenahora. So, its just like, what can we go back to? To really organize and strategize. And I really like that spirit of just being like, heres something that I made for my community. This sense of reclaiming space and visibility is echoed by the participants themselves, who emphasize the importance of being included in conversations too often shaped without them.I wanted to participate in this project because I feel like trans masculine people are kept out of the conversation when were discussing reproductive healthcare and reproductive justice, Jo E said in an interview with Buenahora. Theres something about this kind of intersectionality that isnt easily digestible or easily condensed into storylines or soundbites. So often, trans health care and reproductive health care get siloed, but its important for all people to share their stories in ways that are intentional, nuanced, and where they feel empowered.Buenahora told LGBTQ Nation that the far-right not only sees these issues as connected, but also benefits from siloing trans rights and reproductive rights to weaken both movements. As such, it is imperative that these movements fight back by working together. Thats the tactics that have been used forever, right? By the far right to create silos, to separate us in order to be able to attack us more easily, even though the same exact language is being used to attack trans people and people who could get pregnant or people with reproductive bodies. This strategy of division not only makes it easier to target marginalized communities; it also fosters harmful silences within our own movements, Buenahora explained.Too many trans organizations stay silent on reproductive justice. That silence is harmful, Orr said. Abortion is a trans issue. Reproductive care is gender-affirming care. When our own advocacy spaces fail to acknowledge that, we fail the most vulnerable in our community especially rural, low-income, and BIPOC transmasc people who already face enormous barriers to care.Orr emphasized the need for trans-led organizations to boldly name abortion access as a trans issue. Our survival depends on it, he said. Empathy from unexpected placesOrr himself had an abortion he called lifesaving. Pregnancy was deeply dysphoric and traumatic. Choosing abortion allowed me to reclaim my body and protect my health; it was gender-affirming care in every sense.Abortion is a trans issue. Reproductive care is gender-affirming care. When our own advocacy spaces fail to acknowledge that, we fail the most vulnerable in our communityAsh Lazarus Orr, trans rights activist Many of the people featured in the Repro Masculinity project also described abortion care as a form of gender-affirming care.Just like with my abortion, I didnt think it was going to be gender-affirming, but what I realized immediately after is that my body felt less woman and I love it, said Jo E.Cyd, Repro Masculinity Project | Ale Pedraza BuenahoraOf course, every trans person is unique, and other participants, like Sus, absolutely loved being pregnant. For them, the care they needed was also gender-affirming. It was the first time I was in my body in a real waythese parts of me are functioning. I felt like I had superpowers, they said. I loved being pregnant. I loved labor and birth, and I loved nursing too.The piece of all this that often gets lost is that cisgender people also rely on healthcare as a form of gender-affirming care. This includes hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which was originally developed for cisgender people, as well as a wide range of reproductive health technologies like birth control, abortion, and IVF, that help them feel more at home in their bodies and empower them to make decisions about whether or not to have children.Conversations around reproductive rights boil down to the right of an individual to their body and the right to decide about their body. We should all be fighting for these rights, as we are all affected by them, especially trans folk, Eckert agreed. Many of us have spent years or even decades asserting our rights to our bodies and the right to be ourselves, and we are acutely aware of the institutions and bad actors working overtime to usurp our control over ourselves. Therefore, while the Repro Masculinity Project serves as a storytelling and information hub created by trans people for trans people, Buenahora also hopes that it makes the world safer by encouraging empathy from unexpected places. In my wildest dream, a trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) whos been through like 17 rounds of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) comes and reads this, and shes just like, Maybe, I shouldnt hate trans people so much. Maybe I should stop being a hater because I have so many things in common with these folks.'After all, many of the project participants invested considerable effort into family planning and actively sought to have children. Rosin, for example, has undergone multiple rounds of IVF. Both Rosin and other participants, like Kayne, have also experienced miscarriages. The rest of that year, in the winter, I was working through the grief and just wanting to try to get pregnant as soon as possible, Kayne explained. That whole year, I was really taken up with two things: the anxiety of trying to conceive, and the grief.Rosin, Repro Masculinity Project | Ale Pedraza BuenahoraAs far-right legal strategies continue to target bodily autonomy from multiple angles, the Repro Masculinity project offers not just resistance, but vision. By listening to transmasculine people and centering their experiences, we can build a reproductive justice movement thats truly liberatory for all.Regardless of what some may claim, including [trans people] in the larger fight for reproductive rights does not diminish cisgender womens experiences, Eckert explained. We are stronger together and [can] help build a more inclusive movement, challenging obstacles to care for all people.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPuerto Rican governor signs gender-affirming care ban that sends violators to prison for 15 yearsPuerto Rican Gov. Jenniffer Gonzlez-Coln (R) has signed a bill banning gender-affirming care for trans youth under 21. The legislation bans both gender-affirming surgeries (which are rarely performed on minors anyway) and hormone therapy.Anyone who provides this care to young people faces 15 years in prison and a $50,000 fine, as well as the loss of their medical license, according to the Associated Press. Related Puerto Rican Supreme Court says nonbinary folks can update birth certificates with X gender markers The justices said there was no justification for subjecting nonbinary people to discrimination. The law reportedly justifies the ban by declaring, Minors, having not yet reached the necessary emotional, cognitive, and physical maturity, are particularly vulnerable to making decisions that can have irreversible consequences. Therefore, it is the States duty to ensure their comprehensive well-being. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Puerto Ricos Federacin LGBTQ+ released a joint statement with GLAAD slamming the legislation after both the Puerto Rican House and Senate approved it earlier this year.Every person in Puerto Rico deserves to live free from discrimination and with access to essential health care.Every major medical associationsupports health care for transgender people and youth. Banning this care and stripping the rights of parents to make the best medical decisions for their families would create unbearable burdens for the most marginalized in Puerto Rico.Lawmakers must vote to protect access to health care that saves lives, and allow families to make private health care decisions that help loved ones be themselves, be safe, and to thrive. GLAAD also decried the added barriers for trans Puerto Rican youth, reminding us that they cannot simply drive to another state where its legal to obtain care, as many of those living in the continental U.S. have been doing. Transgender people in the territory who lose access would be stranded if they do not have significant money and resources to explore other options for care, GLAAD wrote. Nothing has changed about the care, including its safety and efficacy the bills movement is the direct result of an extreme environment of disinformation thats now infecting U.S. territories where marginalized people are already under greater threat.ACLU of Puerto Rico executive director Annette Martnez Orabona said the law creates two distinct categories of children in Puerto Rico, one that allows parents to access and authorize treatments, if their childrens identity aligns with the sex assigned at birth, and another that prohibits parents from having the same right, if their childs identity is different. Federacin LGBTQ+ has also announced plans to challenge the bill in court. Let there be no doubt: We will go to court to challenge the constitutionality of the governors cruel and inhumane signing of a law that criminalizes health professionals for caring for trans minors, director Justin Jess Santiago told the Associated Press. In an earlier statement, Santiago also warned that the law significantly increases the risk of suicide among trans youth and exposes them to greater suffering and vulnerability. The organizations president, Pedro Julio Serrano, said that by signing the bill, Gov. Gonzlez-Coln has become the most anti-equity governor in history. She ignored her own Secretary of Health and the medical associations that endorse treatments fortransminors. By signing Senate Bill 350 into law,she has just endangered trans minors and their families and criminalized health professionals for doing their job.Puerto Rico joins dozens of states that have already banned gender-affirming care for trans youth. WWW.404MEDIA.COInside ICEs Supercharged Facial Recognition App of 200 Million ImagesICE officers are able to point their smartphones camera at a person and near instantaneously run their face against a bank of 200 million images, then pull up their name, date of birth, nationality, unique identifiers such as their alien number, and whether an immigration judge has determined they should be deported from the country, according to ICE material viewed by 404 Media. The new material, which includes user manuals for ICEs recently launched internal app called Mobile Fortify, provides granular insight into exactly how ICEs new facial recognition app works, what data it can return on a subject, and where ICE is sourcing that data. The app represents an unprecedented linking of government databases into a single tool, including from the State Department, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the FBI, and state records. It also includes the potential for ICE to later add commercially available databases that contain even more personal data on people inside the United States.Do you know anything else about this app? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.This app shows that biometric technology has moved well beyond just confirming someone's identity. In the hands of ICE officers, it's becoming a way to retrieve vast amounts of data about a person on demand just by pointing a camera in their face, Dave Maass, director of investigations at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), told 404 Media. The more they streamline its use, the more they streamline its abuse. When an officer says, papers please, you could choose to say nothing and face the consequences; with face recognition, your options are diminished.A memo sent to ICE officials describes Mobile Fortify as Biometric Capture Made Easy. Beyond facial recognition, it has a feature that allows ICE officers to use a smartphone camera to scan and save a persons fingerprints with a feature it called contactless fingerprints. It says the app allows officers to run remote identity checks in the field by capturing contactless fingerprints and facial images using their ICE-issued iPhones. The application runs facial images against over 200 million DHS and Department of State records.A demonstration included in the material shows a person standing in front of a phones camera with an ellipse on the screen where their face will be scanned. Searching Face, the app says. The material adds that fingerprints are run against DHSs central repository of biometrics. To capture these, the user manual tells ICE officers to align the subjects fingers inside of the blue box and hold until the camera has captured the prints.ICE officers can use the tool to perform what the material describes as a Super Query. This includes querying multiple datasets at once related to individuals, vehicles, airplanes, vessels, addresses, phone numbers and firearms, according to the memo.According to screenshots of the app viewed by 404 Media, the Super Query feature can search the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), which is an FBI-maintained database containing missing persons and criminal information; the Nlets system which includes whether someone has an outstanding state warrant against them; CBPs system that screens people at the border called TECS; and another CBP database called the Seized Assets and Case Tracking System (SEACATS) that tracks material previously seized by CBP and ICE.After scanning a face, fingerprints, or entering details about an identity document, the app can return a SCREENED HITS FOUND message, according to the user manuals. Those results include the subjects name, nationality, age and date of birth, and unique identifiers such as their alien registration, and CIV ID, which is a system issued by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The results also include Immig. Judge Decision, presumably referring to whether an immigration judge has ruled on this persons case, and final order. In the example given in the user manual, the immigration judge decision section says remove.404 Media first revealed the existence of Mobile Fortify in June, based on leaked ICE emails, which showed ICE was repurposing data collected when people enter or exit the United States for enforcement inside the country.Mobile Fortify differs from more well-known facial recognition tools, such as Clearview AI, because Clearview doesnt necessarily have access to government databases. When a law enforcement officer uses Clearview, it checks a subjects face against a massive archive of images Clearview has scraped from social media and the wider web. That can return someones name, potentially, and their social media presence. Mobile Fortify, meanwhile, takes someones identity and then burrows into DHSs and other agencies' databases to surface much more information about the person, and information that only the government may possess.Flight Manifests Reveal Dozens of Previously Unknown People on Three Deportation Flights to El SalvadorHacked data obtained by 404 Media reveals dozens more people on deportation flights to El Salvador who are unaccounted for.
