Women Dating Safety App 'Tea' Breached, Users' IDs Posted to 4chan
Users from 4chan claim to have discovered an exposed database hosted on Googles mobile app development platform, Firebase, belonging to the newly popular womens dating safety app Tea. Users say they are rifling through peoples personal data and selfies uploaded to the app, and then posting that data online, according to screenshots, 4chan posts, and code reviewed by 404 Media.Tea, which claims to have more than 1.6 million users, reached the top of the App Store charts this week and has tens of thousands of reviews there. The app aims to provide a space for women to exchange information about men in order to stay safe, and verifies that new users are women by asking them to upload a selfie.Yes, if you sent Tea App your face and drivers license, they doxxed you publicly! No authentication, no nothing. It's a public bucket, a post on 4chan providing details of the vulnerability reads. DRIVERS LICENSES AND FACE PICS! GET THE FUCK IN HERE BEFORE THEY SHUT IT DOWN!The thread says the issue was an exposed database that allowed anyone to access the material. While reporting this story, a URL the 4chan user posted included a voluminous list of specific attachments associated with the Tea app. 404 Media saw this list of files. In the last hour or so, that page was locked down, and now returns a Permission denied error.Do you know anything else about this breach? We would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message Emanuel securely on Signal at (609) 678-3204. Otherwise, send him an email at emanuel@404media.co. You can Signal Joseph on joseph.404 or email joseph@404media.co404 Media verified that Tea does contain the same storage bucket URL that 4chan claims was related to the exposure. 404 Media did this by downloading a copy of the Android version of the app and decompilinglying its code. The 4chan post includes a photo of four womens drivers licenses that the 4chan user said they redacted. But comments in the 4chan thread indicate that many more photos of Tea users have been exposed, with one person claiming they have downloaded thousands. Weve also seen 4chan users share dozens of photos of women they claim they downloaded from the database, which all share the same image dimensions and file naming format we saw in the file list in the exposed Google Firebase bucket. 404 Media did not load any images from the database itself.A post on a related thread from 4chan.The source who flagged the 4chan thread about the Tea data to us said he attempted to flag the breach to Google before he reached out to 404 Media. The original thread is no longer available on 4chan itself but 404 Media reviewed multiple archives of the page and another 4chan thread about the hack that was still live at the time of writing. The images in the bucket are raw and uncensored, the user wrote. Multiple users have created scripts to automate the process of collecting peoples personal information from the exposed database, according to other posts in the thread and copies of the scripts. In its terms of use, Tea says When you first create a Tea account, we ask that you register by creating a username and including your location, birth date, photo and ID photo.Tea launched back in 2023 but this week skyrocketed to the top of the U.S. Apple App Store, Business Insider reported. The app lets women anonymously post photos of men, along with stories of their alleged experience with them, and ask others for input. It has some similarities to the Are We Dating The Same Guy? Facebook groups that 404 Media previously covered. Are we dating the same guy? Ask our anonymous community of women to make sure your date is safe, not a catfish, and not in a relationship, the apps page on the both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store reads. When creating an account, users are required to upload a selfie, which Tea says it uses to determine whether the user is a woman or not. In our own tests, after uploading a selfie the app may say a user is put into a waitlist for verification that can last 17 hours, suggesting many people are trying to sign up at the moment.Tea did not respond to a request for comment. Sean Cook, the companys founder, did not respond to a LinkedIn message or a voicemail.404 Media previously reported on a security issue at an identity verification service for TikTok, Uber, and X exposed peoples drivers licenses.

Italy now jails gay dads like me. Is this whats coming for America too?
Last night, I helped my six-year-old daughters brush their teeth. Nothing major, just the usual bedtime chaos of unicorn towels, bubble overload, and one of them trying to shampoo the others ear. Then we curled up in bed, read a story, and they fell asleep in my arms. Its a moment any parent would recognize. Sweet. Ordinary. Safe. Related Family-building while queer isnt easy. You dont have to do it alone. GWK Academy is the only comprehensive, queer-led resource center created to educate, guide, and support LGBTQ+ people as they explore becoming parents. Unless youre me then its a criminal act. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today Im a father through surrogacy. Im also gay and married. And while I live in Canada, Im an Italian citizen. Under Italys newly enforced law, I could face up to two years in prison simply for how I brought my daughters into the world, even though surrogacy was legal where they were born, and I followed every law at the time.Thats right. In 2024, Italy made it a criminal offense for its citizens to pursue surrogacy anywhere in the world. The law applies regardless of whether the act was lawful in the country where it occurred. And while its not technically retroactive, it has created a terrifying grey zone for families like mine. The message is clear: your family was a mistake.People like me arent just being blocked from growing our families, were being made to feel criminal for the ones we already have. And if you think this cant happen in the U.S., think again.Lawmakers across the country are already targeting LGBTQ+ rights, IVF access, and reproductive freedom, and laws have been passed to restrict discussions of LGBTQ+ families in schools. Its all part of a broader campaign: redefine who counts as a real family and who doesnt. This isnt about protecting children. Its about controlling whose love gets to be legal. Surrogacy is often misunderstood. Its easy to reduce it to a political buzzword or to paint it as some luxurious shortcut. But the truth is more complex, and more human. For me, it was the only way I could have children. My daughters werent bought or manufactured. They were born through love, intention, sacrifice, and a whole lot of paperwork. Every step of the process was legal, ethical, and incredibly emotional. Now, under Italian law, Im a criminal for becoming their father. My daughters dont know yet that their family is seen as controversial, that their existence is being debated in courtrooms and parliaments, that their dads, who love them, protect them, and make them gluten-free pasta al forno on Tuesdays, are being told they never shouldve become parents at all.Right now, they just know Im Papa and my husband is Dad. Thats the whole world to them. And I intend to keep it that way.I want to protect their innocence. But I also need to protect their future. Because heres the truth: Whats happening in Italy is not an isolated incident. Its a warning. A test balloon for far-right movements around the world. And the more we stay silent, the more ground they gain.If you think this doesnt affect you because your family looks different, or youre not LGBTQ+, or you didnt need IVF, consider this: Once a government begins to decide which families are acceptable, theres no telling where it stops. Were standing at a global crossroads. Will we continue expanding the definition of family, or will we let fear, religion, and outdated norms shrink it down until only a few are left standing? To lawmakers: Criminalizing parenthood doesnt protect kids; it endangers them. To families: Now is not the time to be quiet. Share your story. Show your joy. Make it impossible for anyone to pretend we dont exist.Because we do. Were raising kids. Were brushing teeth. Were reading bedtime stories. And were not going anywhere.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Renowned Queer Chef Anne Burrells Cause of Death Confirmed
The cause of death for celebrity chef Anne Burrell, a beloved figure in the queer culinary world, has been officially confirmed as suicide, according to a report released by the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Thursday. Burrell passed away on June 17 at 55 in her Brooklyn home, sparking a wave of grief throughout the LGBTQ+ and food-loving communities. In the toxicology report, medical examiners attributed her death to acute intoxication, stemming from the combined effects of diphenhydramine, cetirizine, amphetamine, and ethanol compounds that include over-the-counter antihistamines and alcohol, any of which can be dangerous in substantial doses. Alongside the postmortem findings, investigators noted approximately 100 pills scattered around her shower, where she was found unresponsive. The report also stressed that high levels of antihistamines in combination with alcohol can drastically impair respiratory and cardiovascular functions, posing serious risks even when consumed individually. When combined, the effect can be lethal.Burrells family, who initially released a public statement after her death, declined further comment on the new medical findings. In that statement, they described her as someone whose light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world, adding, Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.Community Reels Over the LossAnne Burrell first built her public persona as a fierce and funny sous-chef on Iron Chef America, winning fans with her energetic style and unapologetic approach to food. In 2008, she launched her own show, Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which ran for nine seasons and showcased her approachable technique and passion for teaching.Beloved among queer viewers for her fiery sass and no-nonsense confidence, Burrell represented visibility and resilience in an industry still grappling with inclusion. She had recently performed improv comedy at Second City in Brooklyn the night before her passing, joining the ranks of artists who used humor as a creative outlet and coping mechanism.Navigating Grief and StigmaLGBTQ+ mental health advocates are raising alarms over the tragic circumstances, emphasizing that even public figures who radiate joy and confidence can struggle behind the scenes. In recent decades, anti-LGBTQ+ stigma, minority stress, and the invisibility of mental health needs have silently weighed on countless queer lives.Dr. Mia Chang, a queer psychologist specializing in trauma and identity, noted that the intersection of visibility and personal vulnerability can create isolating pressure even for celebrities.Garnering acclaim as both a culinary innovator and a queer trailblazer, Burrells death is a reminder of how intersectional identity including sexuality, profession, and public scrutiny can complicate spaces meant for celebration.Remembering Anne Around the TableFriends, colleagues, and fans have flooded social media with memories, highlighting Burrells generosity in kitchens and beyond. Many recall her mentoring queer culinary professionals and advocating for inclusion at cooking schools and restaurants.Chef Dominique Crenn, the first female chef in the U.S. to earn three Michelin stars, called Burrell a bright spark in the kitchen whose guidance helped pave the way for LGBTQ+ chefs of color and beyond.Burrell also contributed to cookbook projects, food styling, and charitable cooking events. She embraced mentorship and uplifted young queer cooks, often sharing behind-the-scenes stories and kitchen tips in her trademark Brooklyn-accented ease.Mental Health Awareness and Community CareAnne Burrells death has refocused attention on mental health support within the queer community, particularly for those in public careers. Advocates are calling for increased funding for LGBTQ+ counseling services, early detection, and safe spaces for disclosure alongside more visibility for emotional vulnerability.Grassroots organizations have organized tribute events that pair cooking demonstrations with mental health roundtable discussions. One such event in Brooklyn hosted queer chefs, open mic storytellers, and therapists offering emotional support circles to cook, connect, and heal, as one organizer put it.Audiences remember Burrell not just for her skill at the stove, but for her laughter, her patience with kitchen novices, and her unapologetic celebration of both culinary craft and queer identity. For Burrells followers and admirers, the mourning process continues apace. Secrets of a Restaurant Chef continues to stream online, reintroducing fans to her instructional flair and sense of humor. Several independent bookstores have highlighted her published work, spotlighting how she blended accessible recipes with fierce personality.Cookery schools and culinary networks have issued statements honoring Burrells impact, and several LGBTQ+ media outlets are planning specials on queer contributions to the modern culinary arts highlighting Burrell as both pioneer and friend.Source

Microsoft Used China-Based Support for Multiple U.S. Agencies, Potentially Exposing Sensitive Data
by Renee Dudley, with research by Doris Burke ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as theyre published. Last week, Microsoft announced that it would no longer use China-based engineering teams to support the Defense Departments cloud computing systems, following ProPublicas investigation of the practice, which cybersecurity experts said could expose the government to hacking and espionage. But it turns out the Pentagon was not the only part of the government facing such a threat. For years, Microsoft has also used its global workforce, including China-based personnel, to maintain the cloud systems of other federal departments, including parts of Justice, Treasury and Commerce, ProPublica has found. This work has taken place in whats known as the Government Community Cloud, which is intended for information that is not classified but is nonetheless sensitive. The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, the U.S. governments cloud accreditation organization, has approved GCC to handle moderate impact information where the loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability would result in serious adverse effect on an agencys operations, assets, or individuals. The Justice Departments Antitrust Division has used GCC to support its criminal and civil investigation and litigation functions, according to a 2022 report. Parts of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Education have also used GCC.Microsoft says its foreign engineers working in GCC have been overseen by U.S.-based personnel known as digital escorts, similar to the system it had in place at the Defense Department.Nevertheless, cybersecurity experts told ProPublica that foreign support for GCC presents an opportunity for spying and sabotage. Theres a misconception that, if government data isnt classified, no harm can come of its distribution, said Rex Booth, a former federal cybersecurity official who now is chief information security officer of the tech company SailPoint. With so much data stored in cloud services and the power of AI to analyze it quickly even unclassified data can reveal insights that could harm U.S. interests, he said.Harry Coker, who was a senior executive at the CIA and the National Security Agency, said foreign intelligence agencies could leverage information gleaned from GCC systems to swim upstream to more sensitive or even classified ones. It is an opportunity that I cant imagine an intelligence service not pursuing, he said. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has deemed China the most active and persistent cyber threat to U.S. Government, private-sector, and critical infrastructure networks. Laws there grant the countrys officials broad authority to collect data, and experts say it is difficult for any Chinese citizen or company to meaningfully resist a direct request from security forces or law enforcement.Microsoft declined interview requests for this story. In response to questions, the tech giant issued a statement that suggested it would be discontinuing its use of China-based support for GCC, as it recently did for the Defense Departments cloud systems.Microsoft took steps last week to enhance the security of our DoD Government cloud offerings. Going forward, we are taking similar steps for all our government customers who use Government Community Cloud to further ensure the security of their data, the statement said. A spokesperson declined to elaborate on what those steps are.The company also said that over the next month it will conduct a review to assess whether additional measures are needed. The federal departments and agencies that ProPublica found to be using GCC did not respond to requests for comment. The latest revelations about Microsofts use of its Chinese workforce to service the U.S. government and the companys swift response are likely to fuel a rapidly developing firestorm in Washington, where federal lawmakers and the Trump administration are questioning the tech giants cybersecurity practices and trying to contain any potential national security fallout. Foreign engineers from any country, including of course China should NEVER be allowed to maintain or access DoD systems, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote in a post on X last Friday.Last week, ProPublica revealed that Microsoft has for a decade relied on foreign workers including those based in China to maintain the Defense Departments computer systems, with oversight coming from U.S.-based digital escorts. But those escorts, we found, often dont have the advanced technical expertise to police foreign counterparts with far more advanced skills, leaving highly sensitive information vulnerable. In response to the reporting, Hegseth launched a review of the practice.ProPublica found that Microsoft developed the escort arrangement to satisfy Defense Department officials who were concerned about the companys foreign employees, given the departments citizenship requirements for people handling sensitive data. Microsoft went on to win federal cloud computing business and has said in earnings reports that it receives substantial revenue from government contracts. While Microsoft has said it will stop using China-based tech support for the Defense Department, it declined to answer questions about what would replace it, including whether cloud support would come from engineers based outside the U.S. The company also declined to say whether it would continue to use digital escorts.Microsoft confirmed to ProPublica this week that a similar escorting arrangement had been used in GCC a dynamic that surprised some former government officials and cybersecurity experts. In an increasingly complex digital world, consumers of cloud products deserve to know how their data is handled and by whom, Booth said. The cybersecurity industry depends on clarity.Microsoft said it disclosed details of the GCC escort arrangement in documentation submitted to the federal government as part of the FedRAMP cloud accreditation process. The company declined to provide the documents to ProPublica, citing the potential security risk of publicly disclosing them, and also declined to say whether the China-based location of its support personnel was specifically mentioned in them.ProPublica contacted other major cloud services providers to the federal government to ask whether they use China-based support. A spokesperson for Amazon Web Services said in a statement that AWS does not use personnel in China to support federal contracts. A Google spokesperson said in a statement that Google Public Sector does not have a Digital Escort program. Grindr blocks users from writing No Zionists on profiles but allows No Blacks
Grindr has blocked users from using the phrase No Zionists on the popular dating and hook-up app, a seemingly tacit endorsement of the Trump administrations crackdown on all forms of protest over Israels response in Gaza to the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas militants. The platform continues to allow any number of other phrases that exclude state political, religious, and ethnic preferences, according to a report by 404 Media. A test on a new account revealed users can upload any number of other exclusionary phrases, including no Arabs, no Blacks, no Palestinians, no Muslims, no Christians, no Jews, no trans, no Republicans, no Democrats, and others. No zionist, no zionists were the only phrases blocked in testing. Related Grindr faces massive fine for allegedly sharing sensitive user data One advocate called the fines a very important victory in the fight to ensure consumers safety online. Zionism refers to the movement to establish and maintain a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Critics of Israels recent attacks on Palestinian civilians have increasingly used the term to refer to supporters of Israel who use the goal of a Jewish homeland to justify Israels actions. The message has been in use at least since at May 2024. Grindr has blocked the phrase No Zionists pic.twitter.com/b4wHs4xLuE Leo Herrera (@herreraimages) May 21, 2024While the No Zionists prohibition is not mentioned in Grindrs terms of service, they do state that users may NOT post, store, send, transmit, or disseminate any information or material which a reasonable person could deem to be objectionable, defamatory, libelous, offensive, obscene, indecent, pornographic, harassing, threatening, embarrassing, distressing, vulgar, hateful, racially or ethnically or otherwise offensive to any group or individual, intentionally misleading, false, or otherwise inappropriate, regardless of whether this material or its dissemination is unlawful. In 2020, Grindr removed its ethnicity filter, which allowed users to filter from view individuals with a race or ethnicity they didnt want to see or associate with.Grindr wrote at the time: We will continue to fight racism on Grindr, both through dialogue with our community and a zero-tolerance policy for racism and hate speech on our platform. As part of this commitment, and based on your feedback, we have decided to remove the ethnicity filter from our next release.Grindr founder Joel Simkhai is Israeli. He left the company in 2018 after it was sold to a Chinese gaming company.Republicans have been in lockstep with the far-right government of Benjamin Netanyahu in his prosecution of the war in Gaza, while massive protests against Israels conduct in the war exploded on college campuses last year. The Trump administration has labelled any form of dissent voiced by critics of the Israeli government antisemitism and used the charge as an excuse to revoke federal funding for universities and other institutions and compel them to shed policies at odds with the administrations far-right agenda, including DEI initiatives and LGBTQ+ inclusion. In September 2024, The Forward reported that pro-Israel Jews complained that they faced hostility on dating apps for displaying Israeli flag emojis or identifying as Zionist. One Grindr user who saw the No Zionists error message, identified only as Green, was explicit in his condemnation of both the hook-up apps selective censorship and Israels continuing siege on Gaza.It seems pretty explicitly pro-colonization and protecting of the ideology that genocide and ethnic cleansing are okay for certain groups to perform as long as it upholds your own personal or capitalistic interests, he said. Its gross. And to put energy towards protecting a blatantly bigoted ideology and not put the same energy towards protecting minority groups is pathetic. So fuck Grindr and its inability to intersect queer oppression with the oppression of other groups.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

StudBudz shoot back after facing fan backlash from Dave Portnoy & Angel Reese controversy
After the WNBAs All-Star weekend, two new stars emerged: Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman, AKA the StudBudz. But after a meteoric rise due to their 72-hour all-access livestream during the All-Star festivities, the Twitch streamers are mired in controversy over Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy.Less than a week after gaining countless new devoted fans because their livestream gave a behind-the-scenes look at the WNBA, the two Minnesota Lynx players are facing backlash from fans who are disappointed that Williams and Hiedeman admitted they would consider having Portnoy come on their Twitch show. The controversy kicked off on July 19, when Portnoy shouted out the StudBudz on X, and the pair said theyd be open to talking to him. Fans were immediately up in arms because of Portnoys very vocal attacks on Chicago Sky star Angel Reese, but now the StudBudz have addressed the backlash. (@) "Okay, so guess what? When Dave comes on, we're gonna ask him, 'Hey Dave, Why are you talking about Angel like that?" Williams said on a July 23 livestream."Because we love her, bad," Hiedeman added."Y'all see how simple that is?" Williams continued. "Y'all all over like here like, 'No, no, no!' We don't run away from [this stuff]. ... I don't think he gonna deny it, he seem like the type of guy that's gonna stand on what he feels."The pair continued to defend themselves on another livestream, where they talked about not wanting conditional love from fans. We literally just said we open to having a conversations with anybody and that just made everybody be in like shambles, Williams said. Its like cmon bro. That conditional love, you can keep that, twin. Keep that conditional love because its going to be a lot of things me and T probably do that yall probably aint gonna like.Yesterday, Williams also took to X to point out that Reese is not upset with the StudBudz over their comments. The Studbudz have talked to Angel and she knows we dont play about her AT ALL End of Story, she wrote.Who is Dave Portnoy? (@) Portnoy caught the StudBudz attention when he posted on X after having watched their All-Star weekend livestream, writing, "Ive never downloaded Twitch or any streaming platform in my life. That was until today. Studbudz has done more marketing for the @WNBA with their 72 hour stream than the bozos running the league have done since its inception. They are hilarious and humanize everybody. But who is Portnoy?Portnoy is a social media personality and businessman who founded Barstool Sports in 2003. What started as a free sports newspaper with edgy, controversial content has since grown into a media empire worth half a billion dollars. Barstool Sports is well known for popular podcasts like Pardon My Take, for helping to popularize Call Her Daddy before the podcasts controversial exit, and Brianna Chickenfrys BFFs podcast before she left the network.Portnoy also made headlines in the past when he was accused of sexual assault by two women who made allegations that were made public in a 2021 Insider expos. But it is his ongoing criticism of WNBA star Reese that has fans up in arms with the StudBudz because they feel his comments are racially charged.Angel Reese controversy explainedPortnoy is a vocal fan of the WNBA and has been a Caitlin Clark stan since she was first drafted, but has directed a lot of ongoing hate at Reese. He has pushed the narrative that Angel Reese is classless, fueling the racially coded way people talk about Reese. Hes called her an instigator, agitator, and jacka, has said that Reese is jealous of Clark, that she "deserved to get booed, and has gotten angry at people who say his hatred for Reese has anything to do with race."I'm sick of ESPN making it a race issue," he said in a video posted to X. "You have a superior basketball player who constantly has someone below taking shots at them, won't shut up, and then plays the victim. If [Angel] didn't have Caitlin, nobody would know who she is. If Caitlin didn't have Angel, it would be the same popularity for Caitlin."After allegations were made that fans were hurling racist comments at Reese during a game against Clark, Portnoy called the WNBAs investigation into the incident bullst. Its okay to have a spine @IndianaFever, Portnoy posted on X,The investigation was bullst. Both you and @WNBA gave credibly [sic] to a very obvious troll. @espn ran with it. @CaitlinClark22 had to defend her fans for no reason. You made something outta nothing. @IndianaFever fans deserve better.StudBudz fan backlashAfter the StudBudzs comments about Portnoy, fans quickly took to TikTok and X to criticize the pair for saying they would share their, now very large, platform with someone like Portnoy. (@) "#studbudz threw it all away for...checks notes...David Portnoy!" (@) "The tragic irony in this. The only reason the Stud Budz are on Portnoys radar is because they were under Angel Reese all-star weekend & hes obsessed with her! Now they trying to make deals with the [devil emoji] because he bought a Stud Budz jumpsuit." (@) "Before I buy anymore #wnba merch this year.. lets see what players stand by studbudz after this bs especially with them blocking people who are just trying to inform them! David Portnoy is a racist essaier whonis also homophobic!"@lolivia_popeIt was fun while it lasted. Im off them #studbudz #daveportnoy #wnba #wbb #fyp (@) "studbudz trying to hold portnoy accountable bouta look like this"@1800ilikeeggsDave is a sick man #wnba #wbb #studbudz #courtneywilliams #natishahiedeman #basketball #daveportnoy (@) "i personally dont see what studbudz is trying to do with dave portnoy. you are not going to change his view or mind nor are you doing a service for angel . i would respect more if they said they just want to get him on the stream and call it a day ."
