Trans Rep. Sarah McBride passes first bill in Congress with unanimous bipartisan support
Transgender Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE) just passed her first bill in Congress with complete bipartisan support that is, not a single Republican or Democrat voted against it.McBride cosponsored The Equal Opportunity for All Investors Act with Reps. Mike Flood (R-NE), Cleo Fields (D-LA), Mike Lawler (R-NY), and Shri Thanedar (D-MI). The legislation, which now heads to the Senate, aims to enable Americans to become accredited investors through an examination. The financial and professional criteria currently in place such as having a net worth of $1 million, an individual income over $200,000 for at least two years, or a marital income of over $300,000 for at least two years exclude massive swaths of the population. Related These nonbinary legislators are revolutionizing state politics Their work is pivotal as legislative bodies and our federal government work to restrict identity to the gender binary. Our bill will unlock capital for entrepreneurs and small business owners whove been left out for far too long,McBride said in a statement celebrating the bills passage by the House. Current law allows only millionaires to invest in private markets shutting out countless Americans, especially women, veterans, and people of color, based on wealth, not knowledge. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In my state, the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce has told me that this legislation would help close the capital gap for diverse business owners, she added. Small business leaders say that its not a lack of ideas, but a lack of capital, that holds them back. Our bill opens up new sources of funding from a pool of investors more reflective of the community, so these founders can turn vision into jobs and economic growth. She also praised the bill which passed by voice vote as an example of the kind of bipartisan, common-sense policy that Congress should be focused on. The unanimous passage of the bill is a big deal considering the intense anti-trans abuse McBride has experienced from her Republican colleagues since becoming the first out trans person elected to Congress. As the ferocity of partisan politics has grown, many on the right have more or less refused to support any legislation championed by Democrats, even when it would be beneficial to all Americans. That hesitation, combined with the added right-wing vitriol for McBride due to her trans identity, could have led Republicans to tank the bill just because her name was on it. Although the Republican cosponsors of the bill undoubtedly helped it garner GOP support, it is still a positive step. It also affirms McBrides repeated declarations that she is committed to ignoring the hate and focus on one thing only: making life better for Americans. McBrides reaction to her colleagues anti-trans abuse has divided the trans community. Many activists have expressed disappointment that she has decided to ignore it rather than actively resist it, but McBride continues to defend her approach. In November, she said she would comply with the GOPs vicious ban on trans women using womens bathrooms at the Capitol and cautioned Americans not to be deceived by the rights obsession with her. I think we are all united that attempts to attack a vulnerable community are not only mean-spirited but really an attempt to misdirect, she said on Face The Nation. Because every single time we hear the incoming administration or Republicans in Congress talk about any vulnerable group in this country, we have to be clear that it is an attempt to distract from what they are actually doing. McBride emphasized throughout the interview that her focus would remain on serving the people of her district and that she would not let Republicans divert her attention from their attempts to roll back key benefits for the American people.Every single time we hear them say the word trans, look what theyre doing with their right hand. Look at what theyre doing to pick the pocket of American workers, to fleece seniors by privatizing Social Security and Medicare. Look what theyre doing undermining workers. Every bit of time and energy that is used to divert the attention of federal government to go after trans people is time and energy that is not focused on addressing the cost of living for our constituents. There is a real cost for the American worker every time they focus on this. She also recently spoke on Ezra Kleins podcast about a need for the trans movement to rethink its approach to changing peoples minds. Were not in this position because of the movement or the community, but clearly what weve been doing over the last several years has not been working to stave it off or continue the progress that we were making eight, nine, 10 years ago. We became absolutist not just on trans rights but across the progressive movement and we forgot that in a democracy we have to grapple with where the public authentically is and actually engage with it, she said.Politicians, she continued, have a duty of walking people to a place, rather than forcing them to catapult there.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

The gays are drinking milk again here's why
Apparently gays are drinking dairy milk again.According to a new piece from Them, queers have shifted from the fancy milk alternatives and are starting to drink cow's milk in their coffees once again. And according to Vox, this is thanks to everyone going broke.Milk has been seeing an uptick sales for the first time since 2009, while milk alternatives have been selling less. There are environmental and ethical concerns to be had with these changes, but considering the cost of groceries has been shooting up in recent years, and that dairy milk tends to be more affordable than its alternatives both at the store and at many coffee shops (with some notable exceptions), it seems reasonable to conclude financial concerns are playing a role here for consumers. (@) The LGBTQ+ community certainly doesn't have any sort of claim to the world of alternative milk. Some of us never even made the switch probably more of us than TikTok would like everyone to believe. But it's still weirdly well-documented that some part of culture links gays to alternative milks. Although, according to Them's research, perhaps any truth behind that might be shifting.Anecdotally, writer Lex Goldstein links the shift not only to financial woes but to a drop in the stigma and shame surrounding walking into a trendy coffee shop and ordering cow's milk instead of oat milk. Maybe that's what happens when there's so much more going on in the world to divide us judging people on their milk preferences doesn't seem so important.

The Forest Service Claims Its Fully Staffed for a Worsening Fire Season. Data Shows Thousands of Unfilled Jobs.
by Abe Streep ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week. Despite the Trump administrations public pronouncements that it has hired enough wildland firefighters, documents obtained by ProPublica show a high vacancy rate, as well as internal concern among top officials as more than 1 million acres burn across 10 states.Less than a month ago, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced that the Trump administration had done a historically good job preparing the nation for the summer fire season. We are on track to meet and potentially exceed our firefighting hiring goals, said Rollins, during an address to Western governors. Rollins oversees the wildland firefighting workforce at the U.S. Forest Service, a subagency of the Department of Agriculture. Rollins had noted in her remarks that the administration had exempted firefighters from a federal hiring freeze, and she claimed that the administration was outdoing its predecessor: We have reached 96% of our hiring goal, far outpacing the rate of hiring and onboarding over the past three years and in the previous administration.Since then, the Forest Services assertions have gotten even more optimistic: The agency now claims it has reached 99% of its firefighting hiring goal. But according to internal data obtained by ProPublica, Rollins characterization is dangerously misleading. She omitted a wave of resignations from the agency this spring and that many senior management positions remain vacant. Layoffs by the Department of Government Efficiency, voluntary deferred resignations and early retirements have severely hampered the wildland firefighting force. According to the internal national data, which has not been previously reported, more than 4,500 Forest Service firefighting jobs as many as 27% remained vacant as of July 17. A Forest Service employee who is familiar with the data said it comes from administrators who input staffing information into a computer tool used to create organization charts. The employee said that while the data could contain inaccuracies in certain forests, it broadly reflects the agencys desired staffing levels. The employee said the data showing active unfilled positions was current and up-to-date for last week. The Department of Agriculture disputes that assessment, but the figures are supported by anecdotal accounts from wildland firefighters in New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, California and Wyoming. According to a recent survey by Forest Service fire managers in California, 26% of engine captain positions and 42% of engineer positions were vacant. A veteran Forest Service firefighter in California characterized the Trump administrations current estimate of the size of its firefighting workforce as grossly inaccurate.Last week, Tom Schultz, the chief of the Forest Service, circulated a letter to high-ranking officials in the agency that underscored the dire moment. As expected, the 2025 Fire Year is proving to be extremely challenging, wrote Schultz in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by ProPublica. We know the demand for resources outpaces their availability. Schultz at once directed staff to employ full suppression stomping out fires as quickly as possible, instead of letting them burn for the sake of landscape management and acknowledged that the resources necessary to pursue such an aggressive strategy were lacking. All options were on the table, he wrote, including directing human-resources employees to fight fires and asking recently departed employees with firefighting qualifications to return to work. When asked about the discrepancy between Schultzs memo and Rollins public statements on firefighting staffing at the Forest Service, an agency spokesperson said that Schultz was referring to employees who can be called on to bolster the agencys response as fire activity increases, while Rollins was pointing only to full-time firefighters. The Forest Service remains fully equipped and operationally ready to protect people and communities from wildfire, the spokesperson said, noting that many individuals that have separated from the Agency either through retirements or voluntary resignations still possess active wildland fire qualifications and are making themselves available to support fire response operations. The federal government employs thousands of wildland firefighters, but the precise number is opaque. Throughout the Department of the Interior, which is overseen by Secretary Doug Burgum, there are about 5,800 wildland firefighters in four agencies that have been impacted by cuts. An employee at a national park in Colorado that is threatened by wildfire said that they were severely understaffed during the Biden administration on most fronts, and now its so much worse than its ever been. But the Forest Service is by far the largest employer of wildland firefighters, and it has long used gymnastic arithmetic to paint an optimistic picture of its staffing. Last summer, ProPublica reported that the Forest Service under President Joe Biden had overstated its capacity. Robert Kuhn, a former Forest Service official who between 2009 and 2011 co-authored an assessment of the agencys personnel needs, recently said that the practice of selectively counting firefighters dates back years. What the public needs to understand is, that is just a very small number of what is needed every summer, he said. Riva Duncan, a retired Forest Service fire chief and the vice president of Grassroots Wildland Firefighters, a labor advocacy organization, said staffing is a constant frustration for managers on the ground. We have engines that are completely unstaffed, said Duncan, who remains active in wildland firefighting, having worked in temporary roles this summer. We have vacant positions in management. That said, there is a difference this fire season from years past. Officials in the previous administration publicly acknowledged the danger presented by an exodus of experienced wildland firefighters. The Trump administration has taken a different approach claiming to have solved the problem while simultaneously exacerbating it. When asked about the staffing cuts, Anna Kelly, a White House deputy press secretary, wrote, President Trump is proud of all Secretary Rollins has accomplished to improve forest management, including by ending the 2001 Roadless Rule for stronger fire prevention, and Secretary Burgums great work protecting our nations treasured public lands. In March, Congress finally codified a permanent raise for federal wildland firefighters via the appropriations process, a change that advocates have sought for years. In her remarks in June, Rollins credited the president: Out of gratitude for the selfless service of our Forest Service firefighters, President Trump permanently increased the pay for our federal wildland firefighters. But in February, the Trump administration laid off about 700 employees who support wildland fire operations, from human-resource managers to ecologists and trail-crew workers. Those employees possess what are known as red cards certifications that allow them to work on fire crews. Many were subsequently rehired, but the administration then pushed Forest Service employees to accept deferred resignations and early retirements.Last month, President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing the Forest Service and the Department of the Interior to combine their firefighting forces. For the moment, its unknown what form that restructuring will take, but many Forest Service firefighters are anticipating further staffing cuts. A spokesperson for the Department of the Interior wrote, We are taking steps to unify federal wildfire programs to streamline bureaucracy.Administration officials have maintained that employees primarily assigned to wildland fire were exempted from the resignation offers this spring. But according to another internal data set obtained by ProPublica, of the more than 4,000 Forest Service employees who accepted deferred resignations and early retirements, approximately 1,600 had red cards. (A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture wrote that the actual number was 1,400, adding that 85 of them have decided to return for the season.)Even those figures dont account for all the lost institutional knowledge. The departures included meteorologists who provided long-range forecasts, allowing fire managers to decide where to deploy crews. One of the meteorologists who left was Charles Maxwell, who had for more than 20 years interpreted weather models predicting summer monsoons at the Southwest Coordination Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, an interagency office. The thunderstorms can fuel wildfire, with lightning and wind, and extinguish them, with great rains. Lately, according to Maxwell, the monsoons have become less and less reliable, and understanding their nuances can be challenging. Maxwell said that hed already been planning to retire next year. But he also said he was concerned with the degree of chaos, the potential degradation of services and what would happen to my job.Maxwell noted that his work had been covered by knowledgeable fill-ins from out of state. But another firefighter who worked on blazes in New Mexico said that Maxwells understanding of the monsoon had been missed. A spokesperson for the Department of the Interior, which oversees the interagency office where Maxwell worked, wrote, We do not comment on personnel matters. The monsoon season is now here and has brought deadly flash flooding along old burn scars in Ruidoso, New Mexico, while distributing sporadic rain in the states Gila National Forest. It is shaping up to be a severe fire season. On Monday, federal firefighters reported 86 new fires across the West; by Tuesday, there were 105 more. And theres already been some criticism of the federal response. Arizonas governor and members of Congress have called for an investigation into the Park Services handling of a blaze this month that leveled a historic lodge on the Grand Canyons North Rim. Last month, Rollins acknowledged, Fires dont know Republican or Democrat, or which side of the aisle you are on. This much, at least, is true. Ellis Simani contributed data analysis.

Rock Icon Ozzy Osbourne Dies at 76, Remembered as an LGBTQ+ Ally and Cultural Legend
Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath and one of rock musics most influential and controversial figures, has died at the age of 76.The announcement was confirmed by his family in a statement issued Monday morning.Osbournes death comes just weeks after a surprise final performance in his hometown of Birmingham, England, where he joined his former bandmates on stage in what many fans are now calling a fitting farewell.Known around the world as the Prince of Darkness, Osbourne redefined what it meant to be a rock star. From his pioneering work with Black Sabbath in the 1970s to his outrageous solo career and reality TV fame, Osbourne remained an unpredictable force in music, pop culture, and, notably, activism. While much of the public remembers him for wild stunts including infamously biting the head off a bat during a 1982 concert in Des Moines, Iowa Osbourne was also a staunch ally to the LGBTQ+ community, standing up for queer rights during times when it was far from popular to do so.An Unexpected Ally in RockThroughout his five-decade career, Osbourne was more than just a heavy metal icon he was an unexpected but vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. In the 1980s, during the height of the AIDS crisis a time when much of the world turned its back on the queer community Osbourne took a firm and public stance. After one of his guitarists made a homophobic comment during a concert, Osbourne responded not with silence, but with action.According to the Los Angeles Times, Osbourne made donations to AIDS Long Beach and other LGBTQ+ organizations in the wake of the incident. His support was not performative; it was financial, public, and deeply appreciated by queer fans who often felt unwelcome in rock spaces.Decades later, Osbourne continued to speak out. In 2010, he publicly condemned the hate group Westboro Baptist Church after they used his song Crazy Train during one of their anti-gay protests. At a time when many of his peers stayed silent, Osbournes stance as a visible and consistent ally set him apart in the world of rock music.A Complicated, Legendary LifeJohn Michael Ozzy Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948, in Birmingham, England. He rose to fame as the frontman of Black Sabbath, often cited as one of the originators of heavy metal. The bands doomy, distorted sound and dark lyrical themes introduced a new kind of music one that gave voice to alienation, anger, and rebellion.Osbournes haunting vocals helped define songs like Paranoid, Iron Man, and War Pigs. But his time with the band was turbulent. He was fired in 1979 due to substance abuse and erratic behavior, only to go on to have a wildly successful solo career. His solo debut, Blizzard of Ozz, was a commercial hit and introduced classics like Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley. Over the years, Osbourne became known as much for his controversies as his music. Alongside unforgettable music, there were hotel-trashing incidents, public feuds, and the notorious bat incident which he later claimed happened because he believed the bat was rubber.Despite the chaos, Osbourne always returned to the music. He released over a dozen studio albums, headlined countless tours, and helped launch Ozzfest, a heavy metal festival that became a cornerstone of rock culture in the late 90s and early 2000s.In 2002, a new generation was introduced to him through the MTV reality series The Osbournes, which starred Ozzy, his wife Sharon, and two of their children. The show was a massive hit, showing a softer, more humorous side of the rock legend and making him a household name far beyond the music world.Health Battles and Final PerformancesIn 2019, Osbourne revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease, a progressive neurological disorder. Over the years, his health continued to decline, leading him to cancel several tours and public appearances.Still, he remained determined to perform, even announcing his retirement multiple times only to return for surprise shows. His final performance took place earlier this summer in Birmingham, where he joined Black Sabbath for a one-night-only set. Fans described the moment as electric, with many calling it a long-overdue homecoming for the group that changed music forever.A Legacy That Transcends MusicOzzy Osbournes legacy is one of contradictions: chaos and compassion, darkness and defiance. To queer fans and communities, he wasnt just a metal icon he was a rare rock star who extended his platform in defense of LGBTQ+ lives. At a time when many artists avoided engaging with LGBTQ+ issues, Osbourne stood his ground, refusing to let bigotry go unchallenged whether it came from fellow musicians or extremist groups. He once said in an interview, Im not a hero. Im a survivor. And perhaps thats what made him so beloved. Osbourne didnt present himself as perfect, but his actions especially those in support of marginalized communities revealed a heart that beat loudly beneath the leather and eyeliner.Source

'It's Not a Political Statement': Checking in With Tesla Superfans at Elon Musk's New Diner
Yesterday I spent five hours in line with Tesla superfans to figure out why they were at the grand opening of the new Tesla supercharging station/ retrofuturistic diner in West Hollywood. People going to Mars definitely need to eat something, right? said Chris, who goes by @dogetipping on X. So, I bet that's the first step, you know, eating and charging. That's pretty essential for, like, Mars life. Chris had showed up to the diner in his DOGE-wrapped Cybertruck, with his girlfriend in the passenger seat on her laptop. He said she had no interest in whatever was going on.Musk has recently been trying to rehabilitate his image after funnelling money to the Trump administration and putting a bunch of recent children in charge of instrumental functions of government through DOGE. Like many of the activities of the richest man in the world, the diner seems to have been inspired by his own tweet. The building itself looks like a big grey hockey puck, and is fenced in on its lot by two huge screens which reach the rooftops of the adjoining apartment complexes.I arrived just before lunchtime to find around two dozen people lined up on foot, and the building surrounded by barricades. A group of die-hard Musk fans told me theyd been there since 7 a.m. Theyd heard it would open at 4:20 p.m., a reference to, I believe, some marijuana thing that Musk does all the time, according to Morgan Hammar, who was at the front of the line. Fans were waiting for IRL peeks of the things theyd seen advertised on X - a humanoid Optimus robot serving popcorn, and $35 Supercharged Gummies.People waiting in line for the diner to open on MondayHammar, an elementary-school educator, told me he and his family own five Teslas: three model Ys, a Model 3, and a Cybertruck. He said that the opening was a very monumental day for us, the Tesla community.Tesla's been under a lot of, kind of, pressure, and this is just a moment that is really positive, he said. I hate that we even have to talk about that [...] Tesla should be above all politics, in my opinion. It's good for the environment if that's what appeals to you, but it's also just an unbelievable vehicle, and it's shaking hands with the future.Tesla owners and dealerships have faced online backlash and in-person protests since Musks alignment with Trump, the creation of DOGE, and Musks choice to perform Nazi salutes at the inauguration earlier this year. In the strongest terms possible, you should not be throwing rocks through windows and burning down Tesla showrooms because you're upset at Elon Musk. So I'm opposed to whatever that is, said Hammar, who described himself as politically neutral. He reasoned that Musk aligned himself with Trump because he is driven by a greater mission, he said. He knows that in order for Tesla to be successful America must be strong. And remember, he's driven by repopulating Mars.Episodes of The Jetsons played on repeat on the two giant screens facing the building throughout the day, interspersed with Tesla ads and other shows including Looney Toons and an episode of The Mindy Project. At 4:20 p.m., once the barricades came down, rollerskating waitresses offered soft serve with Cybertruck-inspired spoons to those waiting in line, evoking an era of sock-hops and date shakes but if everyone wore mirrored Oakleys. All of my favorite aesthetic features of classic American dinersthe cracked red leather seats, beaten chrome edges, faded formicaare absent at the Tesla diner, replaced with smooth monochrome plastic and a lot of screens. Everything is black or white, giving strong managed apartment your dad rents after the divorce energy. Tesla fans I spoke to had different taste. I really love the Jetson vibe, and I can see the outer space in the design that I didnt know was going to be here, said Janine Smith, who also said that she loved her Tesla but is disappointed in how political Elon has been lately.Inside the diner, and @DogeTipping's CybertruckTesla owners were allowed to jump the queue as they arrived to charge their vehicles. I got inside the diner around 5:30 p.m., but ended up separated from a family who had been behind me in the line, who waited about another hour. Every person working front of house at the Tesla diner was incredibly upbeat, which makes sense for a grand opening. Sarah, the hospitality manager of the Tesla Diner, said that things were going incredibly well. We just hired a bunch of happy people and gave them something shiny and new.The menu was a Tesla-fied version of standard diner fare: items like Wagyu burgers, tallow fries, biscuits with red gravy, and Epic Bacon. I asked a nearby child for a review of her chicken tendersunderwhelming. Theyre ok, theyre not, like, my favourite. I dont know what it is, but, you know. She said her drink was weird. The diner is serving its own house-made drinks including cane sugar cola and a range of Charged Sodas with natural green coffee extracts. Her dad described the drink theyd chosen as tasting like an Otter Pop. All the food was served in Cybertruck-shaped boxes, which people immediately started wearing on their heads, obviously an unshakeable behavioral instinct learned at Burger King. Optimus serving popcorn, and a Cybertruck burger boxI was curious what the neighbors thought of the new arrival, so I wrote down my phone number really big and waved it up at Irma Velasco, a nurse practitioner, who was hanging out on her balcony. She permitted me to come up to her apartment to take some photos of the view. She said she is pleased that the huge drive-in screens will now be the background to her home office, as she likes movies. The screens will show short films all day until 9 p.m., when a feature film will play, and they will turn off at 11 p.m. nightly. Velasco says that she now feels validated in her neighborhood selection. I think its made the area cooler Elons a smart man, she said. For him to choose this spot makes me feel like I made the right choice by staying here. I feel like he chose the spot for a reason. The view from Irma Velasco's apartment buildingVelasco might not be totally representative of locals sentiment, however. She told me her neighbors recently called the police due to noise from the vast screens, but she says she doesnt agree that it was loud. It was the day Musk came to visit, but she missed him because she was distracted watching Star Wars on the screens from her balcony. She points to the opposite building, where, currently, a Tesla ad is obscuring four stories of apartment windows. I know theyre not happy, though.Inside the diner, a bunch of different merch is available, including Tesla diner baseball caps, pins, ornamental lights, Cybertruck models, salt shakers, and tshirts. One of the merch vendors told me that the days best-seller was the $50 Optimus doll.A common theme among people I spoke to was that this diner will improve the experience of owning a Tesla, providing a unique location for Tesla owners to hang out and meet each other in a Tesla-friendly space.John Stringer runs Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, the countrys biggest online community for Tesla owners. We had members literally getting their cars vandalized and keyed because of what the CEO was doing, he said. You spend your hard earned money on something and it's not a political statement. The community has been through a lot, he said. And so really the community bonded together to really share, you know, just the love of these products together.Around the back of the diner, by the rows of superchargers on the charging side of the forecourt, a group of Tesla fans were comparing their longest Tesla drives. An example of an interaction I overheard: Have you driven cross-country yet? Yeah, I usually do it once or twice a year. Its great. I asked to use their real names, but they were not willing to be identified. They described themselves as nerds. Well show up for any Elon activity. As we were talking, a car drove past and someone yelled Fuck Tesla! The assembled Tesla nerds looked around. Hes driving a Kia, someone laughed. The diner will alert nearby Tesla owners to its presence and encourage them to order food from the car before they arrive. Ordering from the car wasnt working around 6 p.m., but it looks like it was by the evening. Several people told me that the functionality of listening to the drive-in movie audio inside of their car was working, and that it was really cool. Some of the food options available at the diner, being prepared by human chefsTracy Kuss is another superfan who was attending the opening with her son. She told me shes been waiting for the opening for as long as Musk has been talking about it online. She was very excited about the new menu. I want chicken and waffles, that's my first choice, she said. (Later, as she was leaving, she gave a glowing review of the biscuits and red gravy).Kuss was excited about the theoretical technological possibilities represented by the humanoid Optimus robot. Upstairs at the diner, the robot served popcorn to the crowd, who were excited to interact with it. The robot struggled to separate the popcorn containers or pick them up, but was good at filling the containers with popcorn once handed one. One guy prompted his friend to keep topping up his popcornask him to give you a little moreand it did. When this generation of Optimus robots were first demoed last year, they were assisted by humans behind the scenes. I caught up with Hammar and his family as they left, around 6:30 p.m. It was excellent, he said. Well worth the wait.

Conservative dad moved to Russia to get his kids away from 'woke' now he's been sent to war
A conservative Texas family moved to Russia to escape woke culture and get their children away from queer people, but theyre now regretting their choice after the father was sent to the front line of the war with Ukraine. In a YouTube video titled, Why we moved to Russia, wife DeAnna Huffman admitted that the family packed up their lives and moved to a conservative foreign country because they wanted to be away from the things that we feel are disrupting our childrens lives while showing pictures of drag queens, Pride parades, headlines about childrens TV shows with queer characters, and LGBTQ+ kids books. But according to The Telegraph, the familys attempt to escape woke America, has landed father Derek Huffman in the Russian military. The 46-year-old father of three daughters moved his family to Istra, 25 miles outside of Moscow, through Russias shared values visa program that is meant to attract foreigners who embrace Russian values and want to escape the harmful effects of Western neoliberal policies.Once in Russia, Derek Huffman agreed to join the military as a non-combatant but was quickly sent near the front line in Ukraine, despite having no experience as a soldier, his wife said in one of their videos.Unfortunately, he feels like hes being thrown to the wolves right now, and hes kind of having to lean on faith, and thats what were all doing, DeAnna Huffman admitted in one of her vlogs for the familys YouTube channel Huffman Time.Although Derek Huffman posted a short video telling his family he missed them while wearing army fatigues on Fathers Day, there have been no new messages from him since then. ButThe Telegraph reports that on July 20, there was a link posted on their channel to a Telegram group requesting help from the U.S. government, though the message was subsequently deleted, and it is unclear who created it."We are asking the United States government to save this family, read the single message in the group, along with a photo of DeAnna Huffman and her daughters crying. While running away to Russia because of your anti-LGBTQ+ views seems like an extreme choice, the Huffmans are not the first Christian family to do so. Last year, Arend and Anneesa Feenstra packed up their 10 children and headed to Russia to escape left-wing ideology, and the trans and LGBTQ+ community in Canada, whom they didnt want near their children. The Huffmans left the United States for very similar reasons, telling Russia Today that they were sick of the public education systems acceptance of LGBTQ+ people. The final straw was when we found out my daughter Sophia learnt about lesbians from a girl in her class. She didnt fully understand it, but for us, that was enough to realize something had to change, Derek Huffman said.In a video update while he was in military training, DeAnna Huffman admitted to struggling without her husband and talked openly about Derek losing weight because of the military food and training three times per day.I tell you, Ive been pushed beyond my limits, further than any time in my whole life. The Russian army is no joke, Derek Huffman said. This is a change of tune from an earlier video where he talked about risking his life to earn a place here in Russia. The point of this act for me is to earn a place here in Russia. If I risk myself for our new country, no one will say that I am not a part of it. Unlike migrants in America who come there just like that, do not assimilate, and at the same time want free handouts, said Derek, who according to his wife has a limited grasp on the Russian language.

Queer Photographer John Andrus Captures the Soul of DTLA in Stunning Coffee Table Book
For photographer John Andrus, a portrait is never just a picture. Its an emotional exchange, an act of trust, and especially for queer subjects, a quiet form of resistance. With his coffee table book dtla, Andrus invites us into that deeply intimate world, showcasing more than four years of photography featuring over 50 models set against the electric, evolving backdrop of downtown Los Angeles.Every time a person sits for a portrait, its an opportunity, Andrus says in his artist statement. A chance to capture the beauty in you that, for whatever reason, you might not see. That guiding philosophy is at the heart of dtla, which blends lush cityscapes with evocative portraits of queer people from 2020 to 2024. The images document not only a city in flux, but a community reclaiming its joy and visibility.Creating a Space for Trust and Great PhotosIt can be incredibly vulnerable and nerve-wracking for someone to step in front of a camera, Andrus explains. So for me, trust between a photographer and subject is sacred. He emphasizes the importance of atmosphere, music, and intention. If Ive done my job right, Ive fostered a comfortable space where they feel they can trust me to make them look incredible. That ease is what transforms a good photo into something more profound. A good photo has great lighting and composition and all of the technical perfections you strive for, he says. A meaningful portrait draws you in, tells a story, it makes you feel.A Time Capsule of Queer Life in the CityAndrus moved into his DTLA studio in July 2020, during what he thought was the tail end of the pandemic. In hindsight, it was obviously still early days, so in those first months DTLA felt like a ghost of its former self, he says. Over the years, getting to see the city slowly come back to life and to be a part of that community has been really exciting. The book is as much a reflection of his personal growth as it is a showcase of Los Angeles. Almost every facet, from personal, to professional, and everything in-between, changed, he says. Every portrait, a mile marker; every building, a milestone.Photography as Visibility and Community CareAndrus doesnt shy away from the political and emotional power of his work. In this present climate, visibility and representation matter now more than ever before, he says. I have the privilege of photographing queer people, every day. I hope in documenting the queer people who lived and loved today, I am able to contribute to our communitys resistance and resilience. For him, dtla is more than art, its memory, identity, and survival. Whats Next? Think Bigger Cities, Bigger DreamsWhile dtla is rooted in Los Angeles, Andrus has his eyes set on the East Coast next. Ive been spending more and more time in New York, so creatively I feel drawn there, he shares. I would love to focus on a book featuring models from the East Coast with New Yorks cityscape as the backdrop. And, of course, a magazine cover is on the vision board. It is my dream to shoot an editorial cover. GQ hit me up!Advice to Young Queer CreativesTo queer photographers just starting out, Andrus offers this: Shoot what you love. Clich, maybe, but your joy will come through in your images. Be curious, try whats exciting to you. You can study technique (and you should), but theres no better way to learn and create your own artistic identity than by picking up your camera and shooting. In dtla, that passion is visible on every page. Its a love letter to a city, a community, and a moment in time. But more than that, its a reminder: everyone deserves that photo, the one where you see yourself and think, I was beautiful all along. To see more of Johns work or pick up a copy of dtla, visit misterandrus.com and follow him on Instagram at @misterandrus.Source

Darlings, get ready to clutch your butterflies Mariah Carey is back. The undisputed queen of high notes, heartbreak anthems, and holiday chart domination announced her highly anticipated 16th studio album, Here For It All, dropping September 26 via independent music company Gamma. Its been a long seven years since her last studio release, but if the first taste is any indication, Mimi is in full diva mode and shes doing it for the lambs.Carey revealed the news Monday morning across her social media platforms with a video that was pure Mariah: strutting down a hall in towering stilettos, dripping in glam, before singing a brief but goosebump-inducing snippet of the albums title track. The post sent fans especially her massive LGBTQ+ following into immediate celebration mode.A Title That Says It AllLets be honest: Here For It All isnt just a title its a mood, a mantra, and maybe even a mission statement. For a gay audience that has long embraced Carey as a camp icon and queer inspiration, the phrase resonates on a spiritual level. Whether youre showing up to the club, coming out to your family, or simply surviving a Tuesday, here for it all is the kind of affirming energy that Mariah has always embodied.Shes not just offering new music shes extending an invitation. To feel everything. To sparkle despite the chaos. And to remember that sometimes, a whistle note is the best form of therapy.Mariah and the Gays: A Timeless Love AffairMariah Careys connection to the LGBTQ+ community spans decades and runs deep. From the moment she emerged in the early 90s with her melismatic vocals and flawless curls, queer fans saw a kindred spiritsomeone who felt deeply, loved fiercely, and wasnt afraid to be extra.Shes given us club remixes, drag show staples, and lyrics that sound like gay Twitter manifestos long before Twitter existed. Shes honored queer fans at Pride events, collaborated with LGBTQ+ artists, and delivered speeches about inclusion and love with the kind of sincerity that only Mimi can pull off in a glittering gown.In return, the LGBTQ+ community has elevated Carey to icon status, right up there with Cher, Madonna, and Beyonc. Shes not just a singer; shes a safe space. And now, with Here For It All, shes coming back to remind us all that shes still that girl and she never left.A Tease with Type DangerousCarey kicked off this new era back in June with the release of Type Dangerous, a sultry, throwback jam that featured a sample from Eric B. & Rakims Eric B. Is President. The song, co-written and co-produced with Anderson .Paak, was an instant reminder that Carey knows her strengths and her audience. In the video, Carey served sensual, smoky visuals alongside a surprise cameo from YouTuber and philanthropist MrBeast (because of course). The song exudes that signature Mariah blend of vulnerability and confidence, and the beat practically begs for a remix to be played at every Pride party from WeHo to Fire Island.Rumor has it Anderson .Paak may serve as the executive producer for the full album a pairing thats both unexpected and intriguing.Carey has hinted that the second single might be titled Sugar Sweet, though no release date has been confirmed. Judging by the title, it sounds like another bop that could effortlessly slide into your summer playlist preferably next to Donna Summer and Kylie Minogue.A New Label, a New EraHere For It All will be Careys first release under Gamma, the independent label launched in 2023 by veteran music executive Larry Jackson. The move marks a major shift for Carey, who spent most of her career signed to major labels like Sony and Epic. But make no mistake this isnt a downgrade. If anything, its a power play.According to Forbes, legendary producer and music mogul L.A. Reid will executive produce the album under his new company Mega. Reid described Careys decision to join Gamma as a game-changing moment.Translation? Mariahs doing it her way, and we are absolutely here for that. What We Know (and What Were Waiting For)While Carey has kept much of the tracklist under wraps, shes teased for over a year that this new project would showcase fresh songwriting and emotional storytelling. In a 2024 interview with Variety, she said, Ive written some new songs. I have to figure out which ones Im going to do and which songs Im not going to do. But I think Im very excited about it.That excitement is shared by her fansespecially her LGBTQ+ base, who have supported her through label changes, personal ups and downs, and even meme-worthy moments (were looking at you, I dont know her). With Here For It All, Carey seems poised to deliver music that reflects her legendary career while still pushing into new territory. Whether its full diva ballads, club-ready bangers, or whispery R&B, shes got the rangeand well be listening on repeat.Lambs, AssembleIf youre part of the Lambily (Careys devoted fan base), you already know that a new Mariah Carey album isnt just an albumits an event. Gay clubs will be hosting listening parties. Drag queens will be performing the lead single. And somewhere, someone will be buying a butterfly necklace for the vibes. From her five-octave range to her bedazzled mic stands, Carey has always been a symbol of resilience, transformation, and glamor. And with Here For It All, shes reminding us that shes not just a pop starshes a movement.September 26 cant come soon enough.Source

Munroe Bergdorf blasts obnoxious transphobes: 'The thing you're hating is yourself'
Protect the dolls!Munroe Bergdorf is one of the most famous trans activists in the world as she's used her platform to advocate for equality even when it's harmed her modeling career.Fans will remember that L'Oral dropped Bergdorf after she called out white supremacy following the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, North Carolina back in 2017.Since then, Bergdorf has devoted her career to speaking up for justice while simultaneously thriving in the fashion and beauty world. Now, audiences will get a deep dive into Bergdorf's coming out journey and public scrutiny in her personal new documentary Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf."This is a film about community, chosen family, biological family, and building yourself and refusing to accept the cards you were dealt. Being trans, you really get to build yourself. We experience the world in a way that's so enlightening," Monroe tells PRIDE. See on Instagram With so much hateful rhetoric surrounding the LGBTQ+ community and specifically transgender people today, Bergdorf is grateful that her movie can come out and hopefully inspire queers around the world."I think it's perfect timing in many ways. It's a very daunting timing on a personal level. My parents are incredible and there's been moments we don't see eye-to-eye. You need to build a family with friends and loved ones who get it."Bergdorf is also challenging anyone who opposes LGBTQ+ equality to watch this film as an opportunity to see what living life as a queer person truly looks like."Ignorance isn't always bliss. All of that hatred is coming from somewhere. The thing that you're hating is yourself. Go on that journey and heal that. More people will benefit from you being a positive force in this world."Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf is available now to rent and own.
