His administration has asked Republican-led states to send more National Guard troops. Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio have agreed to deploy a total of 1,100 troops to the city, on top of the 800 from the D.C.-based National Guard.Resistance to that notion is starting to surface, both on the streets and in Congress. On Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Sam Liccardo of California introduced a bill that would require a report outlining the cost of any National Guard deployment unrelated to a natural disaster, as well as its legal basis. The Trump Administration is quietly banning the federal government's largest health insurance provider from covering gender-affirming care even for adults. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management's Healthcare and Insurance division announced in an internal letter Friday from director D. Shane Stevens that "chemical and surgical modification of an individual's sex traits through medical interventions (to include 'gender transition' services) will no longer be covered under the FEHB or PSHB programs ... regardless of age."The letter, posted on social media by independent journalist Ashley Renee and shared in a blog post by federal benefits law firm Ermer & Suter, said that the Federal Employees Health Benefits and Postal Service Health Benefits programs would be implementing the changes as of 2026. The FEHB provides benefits to more than eight million federal employees, with the PSHB covering an additional two million postal workers. There are currently an estimated 14,000 federal employees who are transgender, according to the Williams Institute. The denial of hormone therapies applies only to trans people who are using them to treat gender dysphoria, with the letter clarifying they must still be prescribed during IVF, for treating endometriosis or fibroids, and for cancer treatment or tumor growth prevention.Exceptions will be available for patients "who are mid-treatment within a surgical and/or hormonal regimen for diagnosed gender dysphoria," and healthcare providers must determine who qualifies for the exception on a "case-by-case basis." Counseling services for gender dysphoria will still be covered, with the letter stating that the "counseling services must be provided by a licensed mental health provider and may include those who provide faith-based counseling."The American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, the World Medical Association, and the World Health Organization all agree that gender-affirming care is evidence-based and medically necessary not just for adults, but minors as well.

Rainbow-painted crosswalks, long celebrated as vibrant symbols of LGBTQ pride and inclusivity, are now at risk of being erased from streets across Florida, and possibly beyond, under new directives from state and federal officials.This latest controversy comes after guidance was issued by both the administration of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the federal government under President Donald Trump, calling for the removal of asphalt art, including rainbow crosswalks. The dual directives are framed as a traffic safety measure, but LGBTQ advocates and local officials argue the move is a thinly veiled political attack on queer visibility.The federal guidance, sent to states on July 1 by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, gave local transportation departments 60 days to examine all decorated crosswalks and submit a list of compliance concerns. Duffys Safe Roads initiative claims that non-standard colors used in crosswalks, such as rainbow stripes, create distractions and should be removed.Roads are for safety, not political messages or artwork, Duffy said in a statement.But the data doesnt support the claim that rainbow crosswalks pose a safety risk.A 2022 study conducted by Bloomberg Philanthropies, which funds street art projects nationwide, examined crash data at 17 intersections across the country where crosswalks had been artistically painted. With a minimum of two years of crash statistics at each site, the study found that crashes decreased by more than 50 percent after the installations were added. A total of 83 fewer crashes occurred at those intersections after the crosswalks were painted.My thoughts are that this is political in nature and not directly related to traffic safety, said Samuel Kaufman, a city commissioner in Key West.In Key West, rainbow-painted crosswalks at Duval and Petronia Streets have become iconic symbols of LGBTQ pride, and major tourist attractions. In Boynton Beach, officials paved over rainbow crosswalks shortly after receiving the state memo.
