Stay out of our city: Chicago officials slam Trumps threat to target the city
President Donald Trump speaks in the Oval Office of the White House, Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)2025-08-22T19:37:46Z CHICAGO (AP) President Donald Trump on Friday said Chicago will likely be the next target of his efforts to crack down on crime, homelessness and illegal immigration.Trump indicated that the Midwestern city could receive similar treatment to what hes done in Washington, D.C., where hes deployed 2,000 troops on the streets.I think Chicago will be our next, Trump told reporters at the White House, later adding, And then well help with New York. The comments came as the Pentagon on Friday began ordering troops in Washington to carry firearms, though there have been no overt indications they have faced threats that would require them to carry weapons.Trump has repeatedly described some of the nations largest cities run by Democrats, with Black mayors and majority-minority populations as dangerous and filthy. He singled out Chicago on Friday, calling it a mess and saying residents there are screaming for us to come despite significant decreases in crimes of violence. Trumps suggestion that Chicago might be the next target for a crackdown on crime didnt sit well with Illinois officeholders. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said his office has not received formal communication from the Trump administration about military or federal law enforcement deployments in Chicago but said we have grave concerns about the impact of any unlawful deployment of National Guard troops. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. Johnson called Trumps approach uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound, arguing it has the potential to inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement. It is unclear how Trump would pursue an effort in Chicago that is similar to his approach to D.C., where home rule laws give the federal government greater authority. However, the presidents eldest son said it might be time to look at a whole host of cities in the Pacific Northwest. In an interview Thursday with Newsmax, Donald Trump Jr. blamed Democrats for through-the-roof murder rates. Maybe we should roll out the tour to Portland, Seattle, the other craphole cities of the country, Trump Jr. said.In a post on X entitled Things People are Begging For, Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, included cheaper groceries, no cuts to Medicaid or food aid for low-income families, and the release of federally held files on Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex trafficker and former Trump friend. What they are not begging for, Pritzker continued, is an authoritarian power grab of major cities.U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senates No. 2 Democrat, called Trumps Washington, D.C. strategy political theater. He said Chicago is a beautiful, vibrant city with people from all walks of life and suggested pursuing proven bipartisan solutions toward further crime reduction. These unprecedented threats from President Trump are nothing more than a power grab to distract from his disastrous policies, Durbin said in a statement.Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Army National Guard combat veteran, criticized what she called Trumps misuse of the military to intimidate Americans in our own communities. Lisa Hernandez, chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois, called Trumps comments offensive and false and argued his rhetoric echoes a history of racist narratives about urban crime.Chicagoans are not begging for him, she told The Associated Press.Trump has taken aim at Chicago for over a decade, including on the 2024 and 2016 presidential campaign trails. He has repeatedly compared the city to Afghanistan and, in 2017, threatened to send in the feds due to gun violence in the city, despite historic declines in violent crime in recent years.Violent crime in Chicago dropped significantly in the first half of the year, representing the steepest decline in over a decade, according to city data. Shootings and homicides were down more than 30% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same time last year, and total violence crime dropped by over 22%.Johnson touted the citys approach to violent crime, asserting in a statement to The Associated Press that our communities are safest when we fully invest in housing, community safety, and education. While Trump turns to the military, he said Chicago has invested in mental health services, community-based interventions, raising minimum wages and improving affordable housing. If he wants to make the city safer, Johnson said, Trump should restore $158 million he cut in violence-prevention programs for cities such as Chicago. There are many things the federal government could do to help us reduce crime and violence in Chicago, but sending in the military is not one of them, he said.Pastor Donovan Price, a local advocate for gun crime victims, emphasized that community-based anti-violence programs, rather than militarism, is key to reducing gun violence in Chicago.Stay out of our city, he said. This is not a federal issue. We live this every day. We know what our community needs.___OConnor reported from Springfield, Illinois. Price reported from Washington, D.C. The US Open dating show: How Grand Slam tennis tournaments are shooting for a Gen Z audience
Game Set Matchmaker's Prianca and Saad are filmed on a date at the 2025 US Open on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025, in Flushing, NY. (Kent Edwards/USTA)2025-08-25T10:00:08Z NEW YORK (AP) Over the course of the past week across the U.S. Opens grounds, eight couples went on their first dates on camera. They were all part of the tournaments newest content creation venture, Game, Set, Matchmaker, the most recent play for Gen Z attention from the world of Grand Slam tennis. From Wimbledon to Flushing Meadows, the sport is starting to take risks in pursuit of a new generation of fans. Were always looking for new ways to engage new audiences, said Jonathan Zipper, the senior director of social media for the U.S. Tennis Association. The USTA governs tennis in the United States and runs the U.S. Open. In particular, Gen Z and Millennials are a focus for us to bring into the sport of tennis. So we think about the different types of content that those demographics typically engage with and enjoy watching. The eight-episode YouTube series that made its debut Sunday comes amidst an explosive moment for dating shows. Love Island, Love is Blind and The Bachelor are just a few shows in the genre that have dominated young American audiences in the past year. More importantly for the USTA, it believes this type of thing can draw attention.A year ago, the U.S. Open got 2.3 billion engagements across its official social platforms during the three weeks of action, a record for the event. Thanks to tennis rising cultural capital, there are a lot of eyes on official tournament accounts. So the Slams are starting to get creative, and employing outside personalities to ramp up content creation is a clear step. Back in 2023, Wimbledon brought on Morgan Riddle, a tennis influencer and the longtime girlfriend of fourth-ranked player Taylor Fritz the runner-up at the U.S. Open 12 months ago to lead a digital video series. Called Threads, the series focuses on tennis fashion and lifestyle through the eyes of Riddle, and has become a recurring series at the tournament. With titles like How Wimbledon made tennis chic and Being the best means being stylish, the Threads series appeals directly to fans on the fashion side of the sport, a niche that has been the entry point to tennis for many of the young audiences that these tournaments are targeting.Since the initial announcement of the U.S. Opens venture with Game, Set, Matchmaker which garnered mixed reactions on social media the concept of the show has changed from a more individual style, with one woman going on dates with multiple suitors, to the more expanded form it has now. Ronnie Gunter, one of its participants, had recently moved to New York City when a friend asked if he would want to be involved in a dating show. You know what? he recalled thinking. Sure. Im new to the city, why not say yes to something that sounds like fun?Even without efforts like these from Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, tennis has a large presence on social media these days as of Sunday, the #USOpen tag had 1.6 million posts. But while the tournaments do benefit from the visibility that comes from fans posting on social platforms, Zipper says theres an added value to the Slams getting in on the action themselves and creating what they hope will be viral content in-house. (Were) thinking about how we grow our owned and operated channels, said Zipper. Were always trying to find ways to connect with audiences who have an interest in tennis, have an interest in sport, but can find additional connection to the U.S. Open brand. While there are so many content creators who are out there and creating content ... we have been wanting to explore how we can continue to grow the audience on our channels directly.___AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis ALYCE BROWN Brown reports women in sports, from the players on the field to the women behind the scenes. What to know about Charles Kushner, the US diplomat being summoned to Paris over Macron letter
Charles Kushner arrives for the funeral of Ivana Trump, July 20, 2022, in New York. (AP Photo/John Minchillo, File)2025-08-25T14:55:35Z The summoning to Paris of Ambassador to France Charles Kushner, following his allegations that the country had not done enough to combat antisemitism, marks his host countrys formal displeasure with its top diplomat from the U.S.Kushner the father of Jared Kushner, son-in-law to President Donald Trump wrote a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron alleging the country did not do enough to combat antisemitism. Frances foreign ministry has summoned Kushner to appear Monday at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, saying in a statement that his allegations are unacceptable. The diplomatic discord comes as French-U.S. relations have faced tensions this year amid Trumps trade war and a split over the future of U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon. France and the U.S. have also been divided on support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, but the split has eased with Trump expressing support for security guarantees and a warm meeting with Macron and other European leaders at the White House last week. Heres what to know about Charles Kushner: He wrote a stern letter to MacronIn the letter released late Sunday, Kushner wrote that public statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence and endanger Jewish life in France, urging Macron to act decisively: enforce hate-crime laws without exception, ensure the safety of Jewish schools, synagogues and businesses ... and abandon steps that give legitimacy to Hamas and its allies. In response, the French ministry said that Kushners allegations violate international law and the obligation not to interfere with the internal affairs of another country. The dustup follows Macrons rejection this past week of accusations from Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Frances intention to recognize a Palestinian state is fueling antisemitism. France is home to the largest Jewish population in Europe; its estimated 500,000 Jews marks the third-largest Jewish population in the world after Israel and the U.S., as well as approximately 1% of the national population.State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott on Sunday evening said it stood by Kushners comments. The White House did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Monday. Hes been ambassador to France since MayWhen he announced his intention to nominate Charles Kushner in November, Trump called him a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker. In May, the Senate confirmed Kushners appointment 51-45. During hearings, he told senators that he is a child of Holocaust survivors who came to the United States after World War II, and his grandmothers and other members of his family were executed by Nazis. As Trump has rattled traditionally solid relationships with European allies, Kushner said he appreciates the history between the two countries and is dedicated to building an even stronger relationship. Trump pardoned him in 2020As he prepared to leave office following his first term in December 2020, Trump pardoned Kushner, following a years-earlier guilty plea to allegations of tax evasion and witness tampering. Prosecutors alleged that Kushner had hatched a scheme for revenge and intimidation after discovering his brother-in-law was cooperating with federal authorities in an investigation, hiring a prostitute and arranging to have the encounter recorded with a hidden camera and sent to his own sister, the mans wife. After pleading guilty to 18 counts, Kushner was sentenced in 2005 to two years in prison. It was the highest sentence he could receive under a plea deal, but less than what Chris Christie, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey at the time and later governor and Republican presidential candidate, had sought.Christie, who called it one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes he ever prosecuted as U.S. attorney, has blamed Jared Kushner for his firing from Trumps 2016 transition team. In 2018, Charles Kushner told The New York Times that he wasnt interested in clemency, saying he would prefer not to have a pardon because it would garner publicity. Hes Jared Kushners fatherKushner founded Kushner Companies, a real estate firm. Married to Trumps eldest daughter, Ivanka, Jared Kushner was a senior adviser in Trumps first White House, working on a wide range of issues and policies, including Middle East peace efforts. Inspired by his fathers time in prison, Jared Kushner pushed Trump to back criminal justice reform legislation and was an integral part of the first Trump administrations clemency efforts. In his early 20s and a law and business school student in the mid-2000s when his father was sentenced, Jared Kushner suddenly found himself having to run the familys businesses while shuttling back and forth on weekends to see his father in Alabama. When youre on the other side of the system, you feel so helpless, Jared Kushner said in 2018. I felt like, I was on this side of the system, so how can I try to do whatever I can do to try to be helpful to the people who are going through it and deserve a second chance.Trump and the elder Kushner knew each other from real estate circles and their children were married in 2009. ___Kinnard can be reached at http://x.com/MegKinnardAP MEG KINNARD Kinnard covers national politics for The Associated Press. CVS Health slammed for shameful refusal to cover revolutionary HIV drug
CVS Health, one of the nations largest pharmacy benefit managers, has declined to cover Gileads newly FDA-approved HIV prevention drug Yeztugo (lenacapavir), a twice-yearly injection shown to be nearly 100% effective.CVS spokesperson David Whitrap told Reuters that the decision was determined by clinical, financial, and regulatory factors, citing the drugs high price as a major concern. Related FDA approves twice-a-year HIV prevention drug that could help end the virus worldwide Yeztugo costs more than $28,000 per year, though Gilead says it is continuing price discussions with CVS. Gilead noted that other pharmacy benefit managers have not raised similar objections and projects that 75% of U.S. insurers will cover Yeztugo by the end of this year, with 90% coverage expected by June 2026.Advocates have claimed that CVSs refusal to cover Yeztugo violates the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which requires insurers to cover preventive services recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force which includes PrEP. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The entire world is excited by this drug and its potential contribution to preventing and eventually ending HIV, Carl Schmid, executive director of the HIV+Hepatitis Policy Institute, said in a statement. However, a drug will only work if people can access it and right now CVS Health, which owns the largest pharmacy benefit manager in the country, is shamefully blocking people from taking it, unlike other payers.Currently, Gileads Truvada remains the most widely used HIV prevention medication. Available in generic form since 2020, it costs less than $60 per month. When taken as directed, Truvada provides over 99% protection against HIV transmission through sex and roughly 74% protection for people who inject drugs. Yeztugo gained FDA approval for preventive use in June, following strong trial results which showed that lenacapavir offers even greater protection than Truvada. Among 2,180 trial participants on lenacapavir, only two contracted HIV, compared with nine among 1,087 participants taking Truvada. Overall, Yeztugo reduced the risk of contracting HIV by 96% and was 89% more effective than daily use of Truvada. Beyond effectiveness, the new injectable is far more convenient: While Truvada requires daily oral dosing, Yeztugo requires only two injections per year.Advocates are demanding that CVS reverse course and cover the medication. We urge CVS, which has been committed to ending HIV in the past, to reconsider their decision immediately, Schmid said. Additionally, we call on federal and state regulators to ensure that plans are in compliance with the federal governments PrEP coverage guidance and the many state laws that require coverage of all PrEP drugs.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

HHS cancels $12 million sex-ed grant after California refuses to eliminate gender identity lessons
The federal government has ended a major grant for California sex education over the states refusal to eliminate trans and gender identity content from course materials.A letter from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) states that the funded programs and services include gender ideology, which is outside the scope of the statute. Related Five districts stand up for trans kids despite Education Departments funding threat The letter quotes California officials response to its initial request it remove the material, which declared the state would not make any such modifications at this time. HHS also claims that gender ideology is irrelevant to teaching abstinence and contraception and unrelated to any of the adult preparation subjects the grant covers. Yet, those subjects listed in the letter include adolescent development, parent-child communication, healthy relationships, and other topics in which a students gender identity would play a role. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The statute does not require, support, or authorize teaching students that gender identity is distinct from biological sex or that boys can identify as girls and vice versa; thus, gender ideology is outside the scope of the authorizing statute, HHS wrote. An HHS press release announcing the revocation of the grant took it even farther, claiming the states disturbing and egregious abuse of federal funds was using taxpayer dollars to encourage kids to contemplate mutilating their genitals. In reality, the curriculum merely instructs teachers to remind children that not all people feel on the inside like the sex they were assigned at birth on the outside. The grant was part of the federal Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP), which supports states in teaching students about both contraception and abstinence. The program has a special focus on places with high rates of teen birth as well as on working with kids who are homeless or in foster care, Reuters reported. According to Andrew Gradison, acting assistant secretary at HHSs Administration for Children and Families, the grant was worth about $12 million. Gradison appeared on Fox News to discuss the revocation of Californias grant. Referring to the states refusal to comply, he joked to the host, FAFO, an acronym for the phrase, f**k around and find out.If you continue to push radical ideology on our children, we will not pay for it anymore, he said, adding that about 40 more states will soon be put on notice regarding their PREP curriculum. Stop indoctrinating the next generation, he said. They deserve better. They need to learn how to read and write, not this anti-science agenda. The move comes as the administration sued the state over its refusal to ban trans girls from school sports. The state of California has had a law allowing trans kids to participate in school sports as their gender since 2013 and has refused to violate it despite funding threats from the federal government. Similarly, the California Healthy Youth Act mandates teaching about gender identity and expression in sex education classes.Last week, the president re-emphasized his threats to the state on Truth Social. Any California school district that doesnt adhere to our Transgender policies, will not be funded. Thank you for your attention to this matter! hestatedwith no further explanation.Over the past week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) hasbeen trollinghim on social media, which may have motivated the highly sensitive presidents message Thursday morning.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Long-elusive Mexican drug lord Ismael El Mayo Zambada pleads guilty in US
This undated image provided by the U.S. Department of State shows Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a historic leader of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. (U.S. Department of State via AP)2025-08-25T04:00:51Z NEW YORK (AP) Former Mexican cartel kingpin Ismael El Mayo Zambada pleaded guilty Monday to U.S. drug trafficking charges, saying he was sorry for helping to flood the U.S. with cocaine, heroin and other illicit substances and for fueling deadly violence in Mexico. I recognize the great harm illegal drugs have done to the people in the United States and Mexico, he said through a Spanish-language interpreter. I apologize for all of it, and I take responsibility for my actions.Under the leadership of Zambada and Joaqun El Chapo Guzmn, prosecutors say the Sinaloa cartel evolved from a regional player into the largest drug trafficking organization in the world. In pleading guilty, Zambada acknowledged the extent of the Sinaloa operation, including underlings who built relationships with cocaine producers in Colombia, oversaw the importation of cocaine to Mexico by boat and plane and the smuggling of the drug across the U.S.-Mexico border. He acknowledged that people working for him paid bribes to Mexican police and military commanders so they could operate freely, going all the way back to when the cartel was just starting out. He traced his involvement in the illegal drug business to his teenage years, when he said he planted marijuana for the first time in 1969. He said he went on to sell heroin and other drugs, but especially cocaine and that from 1980 until last year, he and his cartel were responsible for transporting at least 1.5 million kilograms of cocaine, most of which went to the United States. Zambada entered his plea in a Brooklyn federal court, two weeks after prosecutors said they wouldnt seek the death penalty against him. Instead, hes expecting to be sentenced Jan. 13 to life in prison. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. The 77-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of running a continuing criminal enterprise. He was arrested in Texas last year. Prosecutors say Zambada presided over a violent, highly militarized cartel with a private security force armed with powerful weapons and a cadre of sicarios, or hitmen, that carried out assassinations, kidnappings and torture. Lawyers for Zambada didnt immediately respond to an email seeking comment Friday. Guzmn was sentenced to life behind bars following his conviction in the same federal court in Brooklyn in 2019. His two sons, who ran a cartel faction, also face federal charges. The Sinaloa cartel is Mexicos oldest criminal group, with various incarnations dating to the 1970s. It is a drug trafficking power player: A former Mexican cabinet member was convicted of taking bribes to help the cartel.Considered a good negotiator, Zambada was seen as the cartels strategist and dealmaker, thought to be more involved in its day-to-day doings than the more flamboyant Guzmn. Nevertheless, prosecutors have said Zambada also was enmeshed in the groups violence, at one point ordering the murder of his own nephew. In court Monday, he acknowledged the grave human toll of his drug trade, including lethal fighting between his armed guards and cartel rivals. These confrontations led to many deaths both of our enemies and of fighters on our side, Zambada said. Many innocent people were also killed. As he concluded his eight-minute remarks, he apologized to everyone who has suffered from my actions.U.S. law enforcement sought Zambada for more than two decades, but he was never arrested in any country until he was taken into custody in Texas last year. He had arrived in a private plane with one of Guzmns sons, Joaqun Guzmn Lpez. Guzmn Lpez has pleaded not guilty to federal drug trafficking charges in Chicago; his brother, Ovidio Guzmn Lpez, pleaded guilty last month.Zambada has said he was kidnapped in Mexico and taken against his will to the U.S. He had often been at odds with Guzmns sons, dubbed the Chapitos, a term that translates to little Chapos. Zambadas arrest touched off deadly fighting in Mexico between rival Sinaloa cartel factions, apparently pitting his loyalists against backers of Guzmns sons. MICHAEL R. Snoop Dogg says hes scared to go to the movies after seeing two women kiss in a cartoon
Hop hop artist Snoop Dogg went on a tirade about LGBTQ+ characters in movies, saying that he was recently forced to talk to his grandson about queer parents when he took his grandson to see Lightyear. What you see is what you see, and theyre putting it everywhere, he said on the Its Giving podcast this past Thursday, bringing up Lightyear, the 2022 Pixar film that included a brief scene with a character giving her wife a chaste peck on the cheek. The scene stirred international controversy and got the movie banned in several countries, including Bahrain, Brunei, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates, and restricted in Singapore. Related Oklahoma theater promises to fast-forward through same-sex kiss in Disneys Lightyear Theyre like, She had a baby, with another woman. Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? Shes a woman!'Oh s**t, I didnt come in for this s**t. I just came to watch the goddamn movie, Snoop continued. But he said his grandson kept on bringing it up in the theater: They just said, she and she had a baby. Theyre both women. How does she have a baby?' Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Snoop, who is a born-again Christian, said the movie f**ked me up. Im like, scared to go to the movies. Yall throwing me in the middle of s**t that I dont have an answer for. He did not explain why he could not answer the simple question. These are kids. We have to show that at this age? Theyre going to ask questions. I dont have the answer, he said. It might come as a surprise that Snoop Dogg has lived long enough to be offended by others in the media, especially a brief kiss in a childrens movie. In the 1990s, his music was often cited by activists concerned about obscenity in the recording industry. His albums, filled with swear words and explicit sexual imagery, were some of the first to get parental advisory stickers. In 2017, he took over as DJ at an National Hockey League (NHL) game and blasted unedited versions of his music, including The Next Episode, which discusses drug use, sex, and violence, but in a heterosexual context. The idea that some people are gay is apparently too much for his sensibilities, and he has a history of homophobia. In 2014, he posted an image of two men together to Instagram and wrote, go suck ya man n get off my line f. A. G. In 2017, one of his music videos was derided by critics as openly homophobic and showing just how out of touch he now is with modern rap. His earlier music also contained anti-gay slurs, like his 1998 hit Doggz Gonna Get Ya, where he asks if a fa***t is soft or sissy. His 2010 song, Pay Ya Dues, contains a whole verse about a fa***t who wore real tight jeans, swished like a woman when he walked, and rode a pink bike. Snoop said this person used to run and hide every time Snoop approached him, but later had a hit song. He accused the man who he called a fa***t again of foolin the crowd because he got you all clappin and tappin. In 2018, he released Bible of Love, his first Christian gospel album, after having identified as a Muslim and as a Rastafarian. He was raised as a Baptist.Snoops homophobic rant came out the same day that the head of the Australian Football League (AFL) defended paying Snoop $2 million to perform at the AFL Grand Final in September. The irony is not lost on many AFL fans that just last week they suspended Izak Rankine for using a homophobic slur, yet Snoop Dogg is set to get $2 million to play his misogynistic, homophobic music on our turf, said Australian Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young (Greens) in a statement. I urge the AFL to have the guts to dump slur-merchant Snoop Dogg and let an Aussie artist rock the stage instead. We cannot vouch for every lyric in every song ever written or performed by any artist who has appeared on our stage Australian or international, said AFL CEO Andrew Dillon in a statement. What I can say is that our pre-match entertainment on AFL Grand Final day will be family-friendly and consistent with the audience at the MCG and those watching the broadcast. It is also important to remember that we engaged Snoop Dogg in 2025 as the person he is today.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Margaret Qualley talks 'Honey Don't' and that barstool sex scene with Aubrey Plaza
Black heels on a tile floor, and a seamed stocking leading up to a pencil skirt and a simple white blouse. In a Classical Hollywood noir film, that look would belong to the femme fatale, the transgressive woman whose function is to lead the traditional, red-blooded American hero astray. In this case, though, the look belongs to Honey ODonahue, a femme for sure, but in Tricia Cooke and Ethan Coens dark comedy Honey Dont, shes not sent to steer men wrong. A private detective and the hero of her story as she solves a murder case, Honey, as embodied by The Substance star Margaret Qualley, is Bogart and Bacall in one. And Aubrey Plazas uniformed cop, MG Falcone, can't help but notice.Honey, right? Love those click-clacking heels, MG tells Honey as the detective sidles away with a knowing grin. Their chemistry is palpable, and soon these sapphics engage in a public sex act that is a test, an affirmation of their mutual desire, and a bit of movie-making magic. Honey Dont is a rare queer genre flick courtesy of Cooke and Coen, the married duo behind Drive-Away Dolls, which starred Qualley as a lesbian tomboy on a road trip with her best friend. They're super different. They both like girls. That is important, Qualley tells Out about playing queer characters Honey and Jamie in Drive-Away Dolls. They both are used to being in the power seat. I think they both are leaders and pretty fearless. So much freedom in both in different ways.Jamie, specifically, I played that character right after I played Sue in The Substance, she adds of the Oscar-nominated film in which she played a maniacal, physically perfect version of Demi Moores character. It was such a relief, honestly, to cut my hair off and put on jeans pretty much polar opposites in physicality. Margaret Qualley as Honey O'Donahue in Honey Don'tCourtesy Focus Features True to fashion in Coens films with his brother Joel (Blood Simple, Fargo, No Country For Old Men), Honey Dont delivers comical gore, bumbling criminals, and a dipshit deviant pastor in the form of Chris Evans. The film is the second after Drive-Away Dolls in a trilogy of sapphic stories from queer writer Cooke and Coen. Honey Dont, with its neon signs and low camera angles, takes the tropes of classic noir like The Big Sleep and Double Indemnity and flips them by gender-swapping the hero and centering queer sex between Honey and MG.Theres a scene at a bar where Honey and the more traditionally butch-leaning MG trade information and sexual innuendo until MG slides her hand between Honeys skirt to test the waters, as it were. The steamy finished scene is likely to become a talker, especially with Qualley and Plazas mutual sapphic appeal. Qualley shares insight into how the MG/Plazas hand emerges glistening from the folds of Honeys skirt. Honey Don't filmmakers Tricia Cooke and Ethan Coen with star Margaret Qualley (center)It was fun. There's someone from the props department on their knees holding a jar of coconut oil. Aubrey's got to lift her finger up and have it be wet, Qualley shares. It was just playing with different levels of how far you get in that setting and trying to work out the physicality there to make sure that I was saying what we were trying to say, but it was really funny and really fun.As for working with Plaza, who is bisexual and made a splash in the queer Agatha All Along last year, Qualley says, I don't know anyone that doesn't just love her, and I've loved her from afar for such a long time. Getting to work with her was such a dream. Margaret Qualley as Honey O'Donahue in Honey Don't Courtesy Focus Features A classically trained dancer and an integral part of projects including Fosse/Verdon, the queer-leaning Novitiate, and Yorgos Lanthimoss Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, Qualley prepped for Honey Dont by watching Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall flicks, including the Bogart vehicle The Maltese Falcon, and Robert Altmans 1973 neo-noir, The Long Goodbye. By the time she stepped into Honeys heels to face off with Evanss corrupt pastor, who dabbles in kink-fueled three-ways, drugs, and murder, Qualley had studied the role of the femme in those films to make the character her own.Honey, I feel like she's really doing it for herself [not for anyones gaze]. I think the way that honey dresses, for example, I feel like it's reflective of her. I know this sounds strange, but her dedication to her craft in a sense, Qualley says. There's something so sexy about being good at what you do, no matter what it is. Her relationship to being a detective means that she wants to feel sharp in the way that she's dressed and the way her hair looks and her red lipstick. I think it's like a mastery of the art of being a detective in a sense.Honey marks Qualleys second lesbian role for Cooke and Coen in a film thats by and large, very queer, and just a load of fun. The value in playing a queer role in a comedy is not lost on Qualley.I'm so grateful to be a part of this movie and to be able to play a character like this. I love Honey. I love that I got to play her. It's just fucking cool, Qualley says. But I also love the opportunity to do something so unserious, and I think there's a certain amount of serious movies that need to happen about a subject before you can make something unserious.Honey Don't is in theaters now.

  • Chiles v. Salazar: What you need to know about the U.S. Supreme Court case on conversion therapy
In March 2025, the Supreme Court of the United States announced that they would hear a case on the topic of conversion therapy the dangerous, discredited practice that attempts to change a young persons sexuality or gender.Heres what you need to know about the case:What is Chiles v. Salazar about? In this case, the justices will hear a challenge to a current Colorado state law. This law protects youth under the age of 18 from being subjected to conversion therapy by licensed mental health professionals. The petitioner in this case is Kaley Chiles. Chiles is a mental health counselor in Colorado who filed a lawsuit against the state of Colorado, claiming that the law in question infringes on her freedom of speech. The respondent in this case is Patty Salazar, the executive director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, and she is representing the state of Colorado. Colorado maintains this law is a legitimate regulation of a specific health care treatment, and protects kids in the state from abusive practices that are proven to cause harm, including increasing depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. What is conversion therapy?Conversion therapy refers to practices that seek to change someones sexual orientation or gender identity. Despite their name, these practices are in no way legitimate therapy, and lack any standards or basis in evidence. These unscientific practices are rooted in outdated ideas that LGBTQ+ people are unnatural or need to be cured. Historically, these practices have involved behavior modification and painful aversive treatments, as well as discredited psychoanalytic theories such as the claim that being gay is caused by faulty parenting, trauma, or abuse. What does the current Colorado law say?Colorados law is similar to more than twenty other state laws that very narrowly and specifically prohibit state-licensed mental health professionals from attempting to change a minors sexual orientation or gender identity.Importantly, this law does not apply to non-licensed religious counselors. It also very clearly includes a clause that allows therapists to help young people explore their sexual orientation or gender identity ethically. This is an important distinction: by law, state-licensed therapists are already allowed to help youth explore their identity. They cannot, however, pressure children toward a specific outcome (E.g. promising a gay person that, after counseling, they will no longer be gay). What does the research say?Extensive research has been conducted on the topic of conversion therapy, and its harms on young people. Research shows that LGBTQ+ youth who experienced conversion therapy are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide and more than 2.5 times as likely to report multiple suicide attempts in the past year. These practices are also associated with an extensive list of long-lasting social and emotional consequences, including: depression, anxiety, suicidality, substance abuse, a range of post-traumatic responses, loss of connection to community, damaged familial relationships, self-blame, guilt, and shame. What do experts say?Medical consensus on this issue is clear: conversion therapy is a debunked, rejected practice that causes psychological harm to young people. Every major medical and mental health association in the United States, including The American Psychiatric Association, The American Psychological Association, and The American Medical Association, has condemned these practices and they support laws that protect kids from harm, like the Colorado law at the center of this case. Ethical mental health professionals support these regulations because the psychological harms of these practices are clear and because they know it is important for people seeking mental health support to feel they can trust the care they receive. Its not just the medical and mental health experts that support Colorados law. Protections against conversion therapy have broad bipartisan, religious, and public support, too.Laws that protect young people from conversion therapy, like Colorados law, have broad bipartisan and religious support. Since 2012, Republican legislators have supported bans on conversion therapy introduced into legislatures all across the United States more than 1,000 times. Many religious groups continue to express support for banning these dangerous practices, with nearly 400 religious leaders across the globe calling to end conversion therapy worldwide in 2020. In recent years, dozens of former ex-gay movement leaders and founders of conversion therapy programs have publicly denounced these practices, too.A majority of Americans reject conversion therapy, and support efforts to protect LGBTQ+ youth from its harms. Polling data from both 2025 and 2019 found that a majority of adults in the United States (56%) think conversion therapy should be illegal to use on minors. What will happen next? This is not the first time laws protecting youth from conversion therapy have been challenged in court; in nearly every case, the laws have been upheld as constitutional, and the Supreme Court has actually declined appeals of cases that allowed bans to continue several times. While no one can predict how the justices will rule, the outcome of this decision will have significant impacts on the health and safety of LGBTQ+ young people across the United States. If Colorados law is upheld, Colorado and other states will remain free to exercise their traditional legal authority to regulate medical and mental health care to protect minors from ineffective and harmful practices. If Colorados law is overturned, Colorado and other states may no longer be able to regulate mental health treatments that jeopardize the safety and well-being of minors. How has The Trevor Project weighed in on this case? The Trevor Project, together with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the National Alliance on Mental Illness, filed an amicus brief, or friend of the court brief in this case. The brief presents evidence on the serious mental health harms that conversion therapy causes for LGBTQ+ youth, reflecting peer-reviewed research, national survey data, stories of conversion therapy survivors, and The Trevor Projects unique insights, hearing directly for youth in crisis describing their experiences with these practices. For decades, The Trevor Project has been a leading voice in the fight to end conversion therapy in the United States and across the globe, and remains committed to protecting LGBTQ+ young people from this dangerous and discredited practice and creating a world where all young people feel safe, seen, and supported exactly as they are.The post Chiles v. Salazar: What you need to know about the U.S. Supreme Court case on conversion therapy appeared first on The Trevor Project.

Could Carrie Bradshaw Return? And Just Like That Producer Teases Possibility of More Stories
Is it really the end for Carrie Bradshaw? Maybe not if And Just Like That executive producer Elisa Zuritsky has anything to say about it.Just weeks after the Sex and the City revival wrapped its third and reportedly final season on Max, Zuritsky is leaving the door open for more from the iconic New York writer, much to the delight (and curiosity) of longtime fans.Shes alive, so it could happen, Zuritsky said in an interview with TVLine, referencing the shows central character, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. While the showrunner didnt confirm any future projects, her comments have sparked speculation that Carries story might not be completely over, even after a finale that felt like a definitive farewell. The Final Chapter, Or Not?And Just Like That concluded its third season earlier this month with what was billed as its series finale, ending on a reflective and empowering note. The final scenes followed Carrie as she embraced her independence, choosing solitude over an unfulfilling relationship. In the closing voiceover, she writes in the epilogue to her book: The woman realized she was not alone. She was on her own.For Zuritsky, this moment was a full-circle conclusion that stayed true to Carries essence.I think its sort of extra poignant and feels authentic to [Carries] character that she would reach this moment, she said. Shes decided that shed rather be on her own than in a not-ideal partnership. She added that the series finale was the most honest and satisfying ending of the three seasons: Out of all the finales, this one definitely rings the most true.Still, Zuritsky isnt quite ready to call it the end forever. I dont like to be too final about things, and life is long, she said. Weve all seen lots of things happen.Hope From the Inner CircleZuritskys optimism comes with the caveat that the shows future ultimately lies in the hands of creator Michael Patrick King, who has had a longstanding creative partnership with Parker.Sarah Jessica Parker is Michael Patrick Kings muse, Zuritsky said. And the reason he says, Ive said goodbye before and Ive come back, is because its true.King himself, however, has spoken more definitively. When asked by Deadline if a film continuation of And Just Like That was in the works, he replied bluntly: Look, I closed the book. Heres the sound of the book. Boom!He reiterated that sentiment in a separate interview with Variety, saying, It is closed. Because I care so much about what weve done. But even Parker has left a sliver of possibility in the air. During a recent Q&A, she said she wasnt saying goodbye to Carrie, she was saying farewell. When asked whether this was truly the final chapter for her beloved character, she admitted, Its incredibly hard to be definitive.A Legacy That EnduresThe revival, which reunited Carrie with her original besties, Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), built on the legacy of Sex and the City while updating the narrative to reflect middle age, changing relationships, and new social realities. Though the show faced criticism and praise in equal measure, it continued to stir strong reactions from fans, just like the original series did decades ago. From controversial storylines (including that infamous toilet scene in the finale) to poignant reflections on aging, friendship, and identity, And Just Like That remained a cultural talking point throughout its run.As for what comes next, only time will tell. But if Zuritsky has her way, the next chapter in Carrie Bradshaws life might still be unwritten.Im the eternal optimist, she said. All three seasons of And Just Like That are currently streaming on Max, alongside the original Sex and the City series and its two film installments. Whether this is truly the last well see of Carrie Bradshaw or just another intermission fans can at least take comfort in knowing that, for now, shes out there living her good life.Source

Connor Franta Breaks Silence on Rumored Relationship with Troye Sivan in Emotional YouTube Video
After more than a decade of speculation, YouTuber and author Connor Franta is finally addressing his long-rumored relationship with pop star Troye Sivan. In a heartfelt five-minute video uploaded to his channel on Sunday, Aug. 24, titled my good side, Franta reflected on a two-year relationship that fans have widely believed was with Sivan, and while he never mentions the singer by name, the implications are clear. The video, which quickly gained traction across social media, features Franta discussing the emotional aftermath of a significant relationship he says lasted from 2014 to 2016. While discreet in his wording, Franta includes visual and lyrical references strongly pointing to Sivan, including a now iconic photo featuring the pair with rising pop artist Chappell Roan.Subtle Confirmations and Easter EggsThough the two never publicly confirmed a romantic relationship during their apparent time together, fan speculation has persisted for years, especially after Sivan released the 2018 ballad The Good Side. The song, which reflects on a past relationship and the emotional imbalance that came with its end, has long been believed to be about Franta.Frantas video title alone, my good side, appears to nod to Sivans track, and his Instagram post earlier this week further fueled the fire. In the post, Franta shared a cropped version of the aforementioned photo, excluding Sivan, with the caption: My good side. The post came just a day after Sivan shared the same photo on his own feed, but with Franta cropped out. FYI I found that pic online doing my weekly Google of Troye Sivan and Chappell Roan, not my crop!!!!! Sivan joked in a comment, though the move did not go unnoticed by fans.Revisiting the Past, PubliclyOpening the YouTube video with a tongue-in-cheek line, What in the 2014 is going on? Franta delves into the emotional reality of being pulled back into public speculation.Ive been living in my peaceful bubble nowadays, he says. Still uploading content to the internet. But every once in a while, I get thrown back into the zeitgeist.Franta notes that despite the time that has passed, people remain invested in his personal history, and particularly in this once-private romance. There is no drama. There is no tea, he says firmly. There is no bad blood between my former boyfriend and myself. While keeping the tone respectful and neutral, Franta does share a vulnerable moment about reconnecting with his former partner, widely assumed to be Sivan, years after their breakup. We bumped into each other out of nowhere at an event, he recalls. For the first time, both of us actually engaged in conversation in like years, and it went over very smoothly. The YouTuber admitted that for a long time, he viewed the singer as the boogeyman, someone he felt too afraid to confront emotionally. But that brief reunion helped him realize how much both of them had changed. We were just two guys living completely separate lives, slightly scared and extremely vulnerable, he says. It was the great equalizer.Addressing The Good SidePerhaps the most striking moment of the video comes when Franta discusses the narrative in The Good Side, subtly challenging the way their breakup was framed in Sivans song. That song he was right, but he was also completely wrong, Franta says. I think he got the good side of things emotionally, but a song like that neglects the idea that people are individuals The older I get, the more I realize Im living my good side.Franta also briefly addressed the now-viral resurfacing of the photo featuring himself, Sivan and Chappell Roan, noting with a smile, Im obsessed with the fact that Chappell Roan was dragged into this.A Message For HimIn the videos closing moments, Franta leaves one final, heartfelt message, a subtle nod, perhaps, to another Sivan track titled For Him.The final words I have are actually for him, Franta says. So, if you happen to be watching this, I just wanted to let you know that Im proud of you, too, for every single thing that youve done. While the video offers no official confirmation, Frantas reflections appear to be the closest the public will come to understanding the emotional truth behind one of the internets most enduring queer love stories. In a digital age where privacy is rare and speculation runs rampant, Frantas vulnerable, artful delivery reminds fans that sometimes, closure doesnt need to come in black and white it lives in the gray, in whats left unsaid, and in whats felt most deeply.Source

Lyle Menendez Denied Parole a Day After Brother Erik in Back-to-Back Hearings
A California parole board denied Lyle Menendezs request for release on Friday, just one day after his younger brother Erik was also rejected. The consecutive rulings came nearly 36 years after the infamous murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, which shocked the nation in 1989.Hearing Thrown Into TurmoilLyles day-long parole hearing was marred by the sudden release of an audio recording from Eriks proceeding, which had taken place the day before. ABC 7 published excerpts obtained through a public records request, sparking outrage from family members present. This is disgusting, relative Tiffani Lucero Pastor reportedly shouted in the hearing room. The brothers attorney, Heidi Rummel, objected to the timing of the release, calling it unfair and disruptive. We are sitting here asking Mr. Menendez to follow rules, and in the middle of this hearing, we find out CDCR is not following its own rules. Its outrageous, she argued.Contraband Cellphones Take Center StageDespite decades of good behavior and rehabilitation programs, Lyles parole hopes largely unraveled over his history of contraband cellphone use. Deputy Parole Commissioner Patrick Reardon said that even though Lyle did not use the devices for criminal purposes, they could have enabled other inmates to commit serious offenses.Lyle defended his actions, saying prison guards had sold his monitored communications to tabloids, leaving him to use a phone to protect his privacy.Rummel countered that the hearing ignored the years of positive contributions Lyle made behind bars, including mentoring fellow inmates and founding a prison yard beautification initiative. The Boards ReasoningCommissioner Julie Garland acknowledged Lyles remorse, calling him a model inmate in many respects. But she said his repeated rule-breaking showed lingering antisocial traits. We find your remorse is genuine, Garland said. But despite those positives, we see you still struggle with deception, minimization, and rule-breaking.Lyle, 57, will now face an administrative review within a year and could receive another parole hearing as soon as 18 months from now.Eriks Denial Came FirstA day earlier, the parole board also denied Erik Menendezs request for release after a nearly 10-hour hearing. Commissioner Robert Barton said Erik, now 54, continued to pose an unreasonable risk to public safety and criticized his record as an inmate. The back-to-back rulings closed another chapter in the Menendez brothers long incarceration. Originally sentenced to life without parole, they became eligible for review under Californias youthful offender law, since they were 18 and 21 at the time of the killings. What Comes NextWhile both brothers will remain behind bars for now, their eligibility for future hearings leaves the door open to another attempt at freedom. Until then, the Menendez case, a fixture in American true crime lore, remains unresolved in the court of public opinion.Source

Snoop Dogg Says LGBTQ+ Storylines in Kids Movies Leave Him Scared
Snoop Dogg is known for being outspoken, but his latest comments about LGBTQ+ representation in childrens films are raising eyebrows. The rapper recently appeared on the Its Giving podcast, where he shared that watching Pixars 2022 film Lightyear with his grandson left him uneasy. The movie includes a subplot in which Alisha Hawthorne, voiced by Uzo Aduba, marries her partner and raises a child.Caught Off Guard at the TheaterSnoop said he wasnt expecting his grandson to ask questions during the films family montage, which depicts two mothers raising their child.Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? Shes a woman! his grandson asked in the middle of the movie. The rapper admitted he had no good response. I just came to watch the movie. I wasnt ready for this conversation, he recalled.Scared to Go to the MoviesThe exchange stuck with him. Snoop told the hosts that he now feels hesitant about taking his grandkids to see animated films. It messed me up. Im like, scared to go to the movies. Yall throwing me in the middle of stuff that I dont have an answer for, he said.He went on to question whether children should be introduced to LGBTQ+ themes at a young age. These are kids. Theyre going to ask questions. I dont have the answer, he said. Why Lightyear Sparked DebateWhile Snoops comments add another voice to the conversation, Lightyear had already been the subject of controversy before its release. The film drew headlines for being the first Pixar movie to prominently feature a same-sex couple, along with Disneys first same-sex kiss in an animated feature. The kiss was nearly cut from the final version, but after internal pushback from Pixar employees, Disney reinstated the scene. Workers accused the company of censoring LGBTQ+ content in past projects and pushed for the moment to remain intact.Pop Culture Meets Changing StorytellingFor decades, Disney and Pixar films have introduced kids to stories about love, family, and identity. For some viewers, representation of queer families is long overdue. For others, like Snoop, it raises uncomfortable conversations in the theater aisles.Source

Schools reopen in Washington with parents on edge over Trumps armed patrols
Armed members of the South Carolina National Guard talk with a man while positioned outside of Union Station in Washington, Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025. (AP Photo/Rod Lamkey, Jr.)2025-08-25T18:39:52Z WASHINGTON (AP) Public schools reopened Monday in the nations capital with parents on edge over the presence of thousands of National Guard troops, some armed, and federal law enforcement officers.Even as President Donald Trump again touted a drop in crime that he attributed to his extraordinary effort to take over policing in Washington, D.C., the districts mayor was lamenting the effect of Trumps actions on children.Parents are anxious, Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a news conference, noting that some might keep their children out of school because of immigration concerns. We know that our schools are the safest places for our students. And we invest a lot in their learning. And if theyre not at school, they cant take advantage of that learning. So, I would just call on everybody to leave our kids alone, let them get a great start to their school day and school year and the rest of their lives, she said. The week began with some patrolling National Guard units now carrying firearms. The change stemmed from a directive issued late last week by his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. About a half dozen National Guard troops walked by the districts main convention center early Monday morning with pistols on their hips, according to an Associated Press reporter. But an AP photographer said none of the roughly 30 troops he saw on the National Mall was carrying a weapon. A statement from the joint task force that has taken over policing in the nations capital said units began carrying their service weapons on Sunday and that the militarys rules say force should be used only as a last resort and solely in response to an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. I dont believe that troops should be policing American cities, she said. Trumps initial warning to South Koreas Lee turns into warm welcome after flattery
President Donald Trump, right, meets with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, Aug. 25, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2025-08-25T13:24:36Z WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump took to social media before meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Monday to threaten not to do business with Seoul because of a Purge or Revolution that he claimed was taking place in the country. But any prospect of a hostile Oval Office meeting evaporated after Lee heaped praise onto the U.S. president lauding the decor, beseeching Trump to continue to help with Korean peace efforts and even suggesting a Trump Tower in North Korea.Weve known each other and gotten along very well, Trump said. After running down the agenda for the summit, Trump added: Its a great honor to be with you and congratulations on your election. That was a big one, and were with you 100%. The cordial display showed how world leaders are taking notes from previous meetings between Trump and heads of state, whove largely chosen the route of praise and adulation rather than confrontation as they seek favorable trade terms and continued military aid from Washington. It was one of the first big foreign policy tests for Lee, who took over a country in a state of political turmoil since its former leader, Yoon Suk Yeol, was ousted from office after imposing martial law. Lee, elected in June, began by praising one of Trumps pet projects: presidential interior design. I heard that you recently redecorated the Oval Office, and I would like to say that it looks very bright and beautiful, Lee said through an interpreter. It has the dignity of America, and it symbolizes the new future and prosperity of America. Stay up to date with similar stories by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. He noted that the Dow Jones index has reached record highs (although Lee made sure to add the caveat that it went down a bit) and asked Trump, who has been on a mission to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, to reunify the two Koreas and even perhaps see the construction of a Trump Tower in North Korea accompanied by a round of golf. Lee also agreed with Trumps assertion that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would not have continued to enhance his nuclear capabilities the last few years had Trump remained in office. Noting a renaissance that is taking place, Lee said I believe you are the only leader who has made such accomplishments. The tone was a far cry from Trumps confrontational social media post earlier Monday. He later elaborated that he was referring to raids on churches and on a U.S. military base by the new South Korean government, which they probably shouldnt have done. I heard bad things, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday morning. I dont know if its true or not. Ill be finding out. Trump did not identify specific raids. But earlier this month, South Korean police conducted a raid on a church led by a conservative activist pastor who authorities allege is connected to a pro-Yoon protest in January that turned violent, according to Yonhap news agency. A special prosecutors team that is investigating corruption allegations against Yoons wife , former first lady Kim Keon Hee, also raided the facilities of the Unification Church after allegations that one of its officials gave Kim luxury goods. Meanwhile, Osan Air Base, which is jointly operated by the United States and South Korea, was also the target of a raid last month by investigators looking into how Yoons activation of martial law transpired, according to the Chosun Ilbo newspaper. South Korean officials have insisted the raid was in the areas controlled by Seoul. Asked about his assertions by a reporter in front of Lee, Trump declined to confront the South Korean president and instead said the two will discuss it later. It didnt sound to me like South Korea, Trump said.Lee explained that the special prosecutor was tapped by the countrys National Assembly to investigate the actions of Yoon, who Lee said staged a self-coup. At that point, Trump interjected, Is his name Deranged Jack Smith, by any chance? He was referring to the special prosecutor who led two criminal cases against Trump before the Republican president was reelected to a second term. Yoon, who was elected to a five-year term in 2022, was considered more ideologically aligned with Trump and had even taken up golfing again after the U.S. president was reelected last November to try to forge a bond with him. Lee led the South Korean parliaments efforts to overturn Yoons martial law decree while impeaching him. The nations Constitutional Court formally dismissed Yoon in April. The first in-person meeting between Trump and Lee could further flesh out details of a July trade deal between the two countries that has Seoul investing hundreds of billions of dollars in the U.S. The agreement set tariffs on South Korean goods at 15% after Trump threatened rates as high as 25%.Seoul has one of the largest trade surpluses among Washingtons NATO and Indo-Pacific allies, and countries where the U.S. holds a trade deficit has drawn particular ire from Trump, who wants to eliminate such trade imbalances. Trump also said Monday that hed like to scrap the U.S. lease with South Korea that covers Osan Air Base and instead get ownership of the land. Ahead of his visit to Washington, Lee traveled to Tokyo for his first bilateral visit as president in a hugely symbolic trip for the two nations that hold longstanding historical wounds. The summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba was interpreted by analysts as a way to show unity and potential leverage as Japan and South Korea face new challenges from the Trump administration.Elected in June, Lee was a former child laborer with an arm deformity who rose his way through South Koreas political ranks to lead the liberal Democratic Party and win the presidency after multiple attempts. Lee faced an assassination attempt in January 2024, when he was stabbed in the neck by a man saying he wanted Lees autograph and later told investigators that he intended to kill the politician.Lee arrived in the U.S. on Sunday and will leave Tuesday. He headlined a dinner Sunday evening with roughly 200 local Korean Americans in downtown Washington on Sunday night. ___Associated Press writer Will Weissert in Washington contributed to this report. 80s Nostalgia AI Slop Is Boomerfying the Masses for a Past That Never Existed
The latest bleak new AI slop niche are nostalgia videos about how good the 1980s and 1990s were. There are many accounts spamming these out, but the general format is all basically the same. A procession of young people with feathered hair wonder at how terrible 2025 is and tell the viewer they should come back to the 1980s, where things are better. This video is emblematic of the form: @nostalgia_vsh let's go back #lestgoback #nostalgia #nostalgic #childhood #80sbaby #2000s snowfall - neheart & reidenshi In a typical 80s slop video, a teenager from the era tells the viewer that theres no Instagram 40 years ago and everyone played outside until the street lights came on. Its all real here, no filters, no screens. In another, two women eat pizza in a mall and talk about how terrible the future will be. I bet your malls dont feel alive in 2025, one says. These videos, like a lot of AI slop, do not try to hide that they are AI generated, and show that there is unfortunately a market for people endlessly scrolling social media looking to astral project themselves into a hallucinatory past that never existed. This is Mark Zuckerbergs fucked up metaverse, living here and now on Mark Zuckerbergs AI slop app.The most popular current ones focus on 1980s nostalgia, but there are accounts that focus on the 70s, 90s, and early 2000s. These differ from standard internet nostalgia, which has been popular for many yearsfrom BuzzFeeds Only 90s kids will remember this listicles to look at this old tech Instagram accounts, the popularity of emo nights, When We Were Young music festivalsbecause they are primarily about aggrandizing a past that never existed or that was only good for specific segments of society. These videos are awful AI-generated slop, yes, but its more than that. Reactionary nostalgia, a desire to return to a fake past or a time when you were young and things were better, is part of why the world is so fucked right now. It is, literally, the basis of MAGA. Worse, these videos about the past tell us a lot about our present and future: one where AI encourages our worst impulses and allows users to escape from reality into a slopified world that narrowly targets whatever reality wed like to burrow into without dealing with the problems of the present.1980s slop nostalgia is particularly popular at the moment, with these fake videos boomerfying Gen Xers and elder millennials in real time, though such nostalgia is coming for us all, and nostalgia for earlier releases of Roblox and Call of Dutythe ancient days of, like, 2021are already going viral. Its normal to look back at the time when you were young and your knees didnt hurt with rose tinted glasses. Its as if a generation read Ready Player One as an instruction manual instead of a warning (or instead of vapid surface-level nonsense that was one long reference rather than a coherent narrative). These AI-generated slop videos are the latest expression of a common political theme: nostalgia for an imagined past. Dissatisfaction with the current moment is a normal reaction to the horrifying conditions under which we all live. The National Guard is occupying Washington DC, technology is dividing and surveling us in ways we never imagined, and our political leaders are feckless and corrupt. If you arent disturbed by where we are right now, youre not paying attention.A rejection of modernity and a call to return to the past has long been a feature of authoritarian and fascist political movements. So when we see an AI generated woman in stonewashed denim with hair by Aqua Net White tell us how good things were 40 years ago, we remember the political figures from the Reagan-era calling for a return to the 1950s.Nostalgia is a poisonous political force. Things were not better back then, they were just different. Often they were worse. These 1980s AI slop videos have the same energy as online right weirdos with Roman bust avatars calling for us to retvrn and embrace tradition. Their political project uses the aesthetic of the past to sell a future where minorities are marginalized, women have no political power, and white guys are in charge. Thats how they think it all worked in the past and theyd love for it to happen again. The 80s AI slop videos have a sinister air beyond their invocation of reactionary politics. Dude, its 1985 and the release of the film The Goonies. Forget 2025 and come here. We want you here, a strong-jawed white guy asks from his front lawn while a slowed down and distorted version of Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country plays. Come to 1985, I miss ya, a young man with feathered hair says in the back of a pickup truck as the sun sets. The surreal nature of these videos, this bizarre ask to time travel to the past, has cultish just-drink-the-Kool-Aid vibes. What is the ask here, exactly? What does it mean for someone with dreams of an imagined past to go back to the 1980s where these ghoulish AI-crafted simulacrums dwell? In the Black Mirror episode San Junipero, Mackenzie Davis finds comfort in a simulation of a stereotypical 1980s southern California town. She loses herself in the fantasy. Shes also dying. For her, heaven was a place on earth, a data center where she could live until someone turned the lights off. Those viewing these endless AI-generated TikToks and Reels are, however, very much alive. They can go outside. They can put the phone down and get to know their neighbors. They dont have to doom scroll. They can log off and work for a better world in their community. They can reach out to an old friend or make new ones.Or they can load up another short form video and fill themselves with fuzzy feelings about how much better things were 40 years ago, back before all this technology, back when they were young, and where they think the world seemed to make more sense. AI allows us to sink into that nostalgic feeling. We have the technology, right now, to form digital wombs from a comforting and misremembered past.It is worth mentioning that the people making these videos are also human beings with agency and goals, too. And their goals, universally, are to spam the internet for the purposes of making money. Over in the Discord communities where people talk about what types of AI slop works on social media, nostalgia is treated as a popular, moneymaking niche like any other. Any EDITOR that can make Nostalgia videos? one message we saw reads. Need video editor to for nostalgia welcome back to 20xx videos. Some ideas i got right now are nostalgia, money motivation, self improvement and maybe streamer clips, another says.A top purveyor of this nostalgia slop is the Instagram account purestnostalgia, which is full of these videos. That account is run by a guy named Josh Crowe who looks to be in his 20s and claims to live in Bali: In the process of becoming a billionaire, his profile reads.

Witness threatens violent sexual assault against trans women during Texas Senate hearing
During an August 22 Texas Senate hearing on a transphobic bathroom bill, Jack Finger, a representative of the anti-LGBTQ+ San Antonio Family Association, repeatedly misgendered trans women and threatened to severely injure the genitals of any trans person using public facilities. The hearing covered S.B. 8, a bill that would require people to use facilities inside of government buildings that match their sex assigned at birth. Any institution that violates this law would be fined $5,000 for the first offense and $25,000 for each additional offense. Related Spectators boo right-wing trolls transphobic speech in Texas Senate Finger began by mentioning that his group opposes perversions and enemies of the family (ignoring the fact that many families include trans people). His group refers to LGBTQ+ identities as unnatural lifestyles which attack the family, promote unhealthy lifestyles choices, and will lead to domestic failure.Im just an old fogie and I wasnt made for these times, but how on earth did we get to the point where men are allowed to go into womens restrooms and locker rooms and shower with them and nobody can do anything about it? I, for one, am tired of that. I wont put up with it, Finger said during the hearing. Ive seen it at least a couple of times in San Antonio and I was tempted to help that gentleman save money on his transgendered operation by physically helping him get there. Ken King (R), who filed a 2023 bill that wouldve forbidden public schools from celebrating Pride, told Finger, Sir, we will not make threats in this committee.Finger replied, You need not worry. Nothing happened.King said, You cannot make comments like that. Finger later said that King misunderstood his comment, and King replied that he was Just trying to keep the temperature in check. Finger then concluded his speech by saying that the law is necessary to instill common sense and decency into society. The San Antonio Family Association wasnt the only stateside anti-LGBTQ+ group in attendance at the hearing. Texas Values Action, which opposes same-sex marriage, also sent a representative C.J. Grisham, a member of The Proud Boys,an anti-feminist, anti-Muslim, Western chauvinist group that has allied with white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups to target drag queen performances nationwide.Proponents of the bill claimed that it is necessary to protect the privacy and physical safety of women and girls (despite the fact that the vast majority of assaults against women are committed by cisgender men). However, when questioned by committee members about specific incidents involving boys and men using womens restrooms, the bills author was unable to recall any such occurrences.Democratic committee members noted that there have been no known incidents of restroom assaults of men claiming to be trans women, that law enforcement officials and religious leaders across Texas have testified against similar bills in the past, and noted that enforcement of the bill would depend entirely on private citizens determining entirely by appearance whether a person seems to be trans.Numerous opponents spoke against the bill, noting that it encourages government intrusion into peoples privacy, discourages business investments in the state, wastes taxpayer funds, seeks to exclude trans people from civic life, and does nothing to actually aid women in substantial ways (such as offering paid maternity leave or alleviating gender wage gaps).Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Queers for Palestine protestors shut down Ottawa Pride parade & get it canceled
Ottawas Pride parade ground to a halt on Sunday afternoon when Queers4Palestine protesters blocked the route and demanded to negotiate with parade organizers over their stance on the war in Gaza. After nearly an hour of talks, and with the route still blocked, the two sides failed to reach an accommodation. Capital Pride, the events organizers, decided to cancel the remainder of the march. Related Donald Trump bizarrely says the US spent $50 million to help Hamas make condom bombs We are bummed, of course, but we had a blast for the block and a half that we walked, said Stefania Wheelhouse, who marched in the short-lived parade with a local theater company. We sang, we spread the word, she told the Ottawa Citizen. Everyone was so positive, so it was still a net win for us, Wheelhouse said. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The atmosphere was less positive for parade and protest leaders, who tried and failed to come to terms over Israels continuing occupation of Gaza in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks, and Capital Prides response.Last year, the group was resolute in its support of Palestinians, issuing a letter that condemned both the acts of terrorism committed on October 7 by Hamas and Israels endless and brutal campaign in Gaza, which the letter said had caused the deaths of innocent Palestinians. The Jewish Federation of Ottawa called the 2024 statement antisemitic and vowed to boycott last summers Pride parade in response. Other groups, and Ottawas mayor, Mark Sutcliffe, withdrew their support and sponsorship as well. This year, that statement quietly disappeared from Capital Prides website. This is what a village looks like! the pro-Palestinian protesters chanted from Parliament Hill in the Canadian capital, a reference to this years We Are a Village parade theme. The parade ground to a halt there, Q4P said, with the ascent of Grand Marshall Patience Plush.Protesters unfurled Palestinian flags and a giant pink-and-black banner that read All of us or none of us and Stonewall was an intifada. Many signs read, No pride in genocide.Demonstrators also chanted slogans including Free, free Palestine! Long live the intifada! and From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free! Queers4Palestine issued several demands of Capital Pride, including a commitment to join the long-running boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel. They also demanded that Mayor Sutcliffe and other elected officials publicly apologize for the 2024 boycott of Capital Pride and called on them to stand with us and all oppressed peoples, including Palestinians. We are in the parade today to affirm very clearly that our Pride is not for sale, and that 2SLGBTQIA+ communities will not accept sponsors and elected officials dictating what we stand for, how we celebrate ourselves, and how we claim our space, a press release from the group said. CP had multiple discussions with those who boycotted over the last year, not with Q4P and allies. Why prioritize corporations and right-wing politicians over the queer community? the group asked.CPs board voted to publish last years solidarity statement. This years removal was not voted on. One board member even quit in protest.Mayor Sutcliffe and others boycotted Pride last year, hurting our community financially. Now he wants to show up without apology using Pride for political gain, the group said.Capital Pride cant say it wasnt aware of Q4Ps demands. Sundays stoppage came after at least a week of public calls to reinstate the statement. But Capital Pride organizers slow-walked a response, as former sponsors and Ottawas mayor returned in the absence of the polarizing document.Belatedly, the group said it stood by the views expressed in last years letter about Israels actions in Gaza, and said the statement was missing online due to a website refresh, reiterating Executive Director Callie Metlers description of the removal as part of the organizations annual process of refreshing their online environment. By that time, the parade had launched and was aborted.Capital Pride released a Clarification on Parade cancellation message to social media that said that Q4P was marching in the parade as guests invited by the parade garnd marshall, before the group forced the parade to stop.As a community organization, we strive to engage with our community members in good faith and to balance the various interests and demands that are made of us while also organizing one of the largest festivals in our city, the statement said. Throughout the summer, we had several meetings with Q4P along with other community groups to discuss the issues that are important to them. Unfortunately, the group refused to have a meaningful discussion about how to move forward. After over an hour of attempting to resolve the stoppage, it became clear that Q4P was unwilling to engage in a good faith conversation and was insistent on misrepresenting our discussions.Rerouting the parade mid-way was not possible and the street closures for the parade route were only permitted to 4:00 pm. Given the constraints we were facing and the nature of the discussion with Q4P, we were left with no other choice than to cancel the remainder of the parade. The message said that other parts of Ottawas Pride festivities would continue as planned. In a statement, Mayor Sutcliffe said it was deeply regrettable that a group of activists chose to block the parade, ultimately leading Capital Pride officials to cancel the event. My heart goes out to the many people in our city who were deprived of the opportunity to participate in this celebration of joy, resilience, and community.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Remember when Snoop Dogg was on 'The L Word'? How's he going to explain THAT to his grandkids?
Back in 2004, Snoop Dogg made a surprising cameo on The L Word, the groundbreaking Showtime series centered around a close-knit group of queer women in Los Angeles. Appearing as a fictional rapper named Slim Daddy, Snoop joined Kit Porter (Pam Grier) for a music video shoot in Season 1. At the same time, Kits sister, Bette (Jennifer Beals), and her partner, Tina (Laurel Holloman), were just beginning their journey toward starting a family togetheran arc that would continue across multiple seasons.Cut to 2025, and the rappers tune has changed dramatically. During a July appearance on the Its Giving podcast, Snoop vented about watching Lightyear, a childrens film that featured a brief kiss between two female characters, with his grandson. Aw s**t, I didn't come here for this s**t, he said. I just came here to watch the goddamn movie. He then asked: Do we have to show that at that age? They're going to ask questions. I don't have the answer. The moment sparked immediate backlashnot just for the comments themselves, but for their timing. Just a week prior, the Australian Football League (AFL) announced Snoop Dogg as the headliner for this years Grand Final entertainment. The league had already been under fire for lenient disciplinary action following a players anti-gay slur. AFL CEO Andrew Dillon attempted to defend the decision to keep Snoop, describing him as the person he is today, and praising his supposed personal growth. But if this is growth, what does regression look like?Snoops comments are far from isolated. A quick look at his public history reveals a pattern: a 2013 Guardian interview where he claimed homosexuality and rap dont mix; a 2014 Instagram post mocking two men in bed with the caption go suck ya man; and a 2015 lawsuit after he posted a photo of a fan and encouraged followers to guess their gender show his true colors. In 2017, his Moment I Feared music video drew ire for its depiction of a pink-handbag-wearing, high-heel-clad rappera clear parody of gender-nonconforming artist Young Thug.Yet somehow, this same artist once appeared in The L Wordnot just any show, but a show deeply focused on queer love, queer joy, and, yes, queer parenting. And he did so with apparent comfort, embracing the space as Slim Daddy while Bette and Tina were plotting baby names just a few scenes away. The above instances also occurred after he told TMZ that love is love and hes not trying to change anybody. The disconnect is jarring, but not uncommon. Its a well-worn pattern: artists, athletes, and public figures enjoy the visibility and cultural cache of queer proximityuntil the moment it becomes too much, or too close to their personal lives. So when Snoop complains about same-sex kisses in animated films, its not just out of touchits hypocritical. Because hes not new to this conversation. Hes been inside it. Hes rapped through it. Hes literally been on The L Word.Maybe what were seeing isnt confusion, but clarity. When the cameras roll, the allyship performs. But off-script, the mask slips.
