APNEWS.COMFed Gov. Lisa Cook sues Trump administration to block her attempted firingBoard of Governors of the Federal Reserve member Lisa Cook, speaks during a conversations with leaders from organizations that include nonprofits, small businesses, manufacturing, supply chain management, the hospitality industry, and the housing and education sectors at the Federal Reserve building, Sept. 23, 2022, in Washington. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta, File)2025-08-28T13:43:43Z WASHINGTON (AP) Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has sued the Trump administration in an effort to overturn the presidents attempt to fire her, launching an unprecedented legal battle that could significantly reshape the Feds longstanding political independence. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to block her firing and confirm her status as a member of the Feds governing board. No president has sought to fire a Fed governor in the institutions 112-year history until Trump posted a letter on media late Monday saying that Cook was fired. Trump said the reason for her removal were allegations that she committed mortgage fraud in 2021, before she was appointed to the board. The Supreme Court has signaled that the president cant fire Fed officials over policy differences, but he can do so for cause, typically meaning misconduct or neglect of duty. Most legal experts say that a for cause removal requires some type of process that would allow Cook to respond to the charges, which hasnt happened. Cook has not been charged with any crime. Lisa Cook, right, takes the oath of office to become a member of the Federal Reserve Board, May 23, 2022, in Washington. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky, file) Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More The law governing the Fed explicitly requires a showing of cause for a Governors removal, which an unsubstantiated allegation about private mortgage applications submitted by Governor Cook prior to her Senate confirmation is not, the lawsuit says. The presidents decision comes as he has repeatedly attacked Fed Chair Jerome Powell and the other members of the Feds interest-rate setting committee for not cutting the short-term interest rate they control more quickly. It currently stands at 4.3%, after Fed policymakers reduced it by a full percentage point late last year. Powell signaled last week that the central bank was leaning toward cutting its rate at its next meeting Sept. 16-17. Those attacks have opened up the White House to the criticism that its firing of Cook over alleged mortgage fraud is just a pretext to open up another seat on the board for a Trump loyalist. Trump has said he will only appoint people to the Fed who will support lower rates. The Fed exercises expansive power over the U.S. economy by adjusting a short-term interest rate that can influence broader borrowing costs for things like mortgages, auto loans and business loans. If the courts ultimately green-light Trumps firing of Cook, it could erode the Feds political independence, which enables it to take unpopular steps like raising interest rates. A less-independent Fed could leave Americans paying higher rates because investors would demand a higher yield to own bonds to offset potentially greater inflation in the future, pushing up borrowing costs throughout the economy. APNEWS.COMClosure of Floridas Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention center can proceed, judge saysWork progresses on a new migrant detention facility dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," at Dade-Collier Training and Transition facility in the Florida Everglades, on July 4, 2025, in Ochopee, Fla. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell, File)2025-08-28T13:52:33Z ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) A federal judge in Miami has refused to pause her order requiring the winding down of the immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades known as Alligator Alcatraz while the federal government appeals her ruling.Attorneys for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in their request for a stay that U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams order last week, if carried out, would disrupt the federal governments ability to enforce immigration laws. The judge denied their request late Thursday.Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe, whose lawsuit led to the judges ruling, had opposed the request for a stay. The judge said in last weeks order that she expected the population of the facility to decline within 60 days through the transferring of the detainees to other facilities, and once that happened, fencing, lighting and generators should be removed. She wrote the state and federal defendants cant bring anyone other than those who are already being detained at the facility onto the property. Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe had argued that further construction and operations should be stopped until federal and state officials complied with federal environmental laws. Their lawsuit claimed the facility threatened environmentally sensitive wetlands that are home to protected plants and animals and would reverse billions of dollars spent over decades on environmental restoration. The detention center was quickly built two months ago at a lightly used, single-runway training airport in the middle of the Everglades. State officials signed more than $245 million in contracts for building and operating the facility, which officially opened July 1. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. President Donald Trump toured the facility last month and suggested it could be a model for future lockups nationwide as his administration races to expand the infrastructure needed to increase deportations. A second lawsuit also was filed by civil rights groups last month against the state and federal governments over practices at the Everglades facility, claiming detainees were denied access to the legal system. Another federal judge in Miami last week dismissed parts of the lawsuit which had been filed in Floridas southern district and then moved the remaining counts against the state of Florida to the neighboring middle district. Civil rights groups last Friday filed a third lawsuit over practices at the facility in federal court in Fort Myers, asking for a restraining order and a temporary injunction that would bar Florida agencies and their contractors from holding detainees at Alligator Alcatraz. They described severe problems at the facility which were previously unheard-of in the immigration system. Detainees were being held for weeks without any charges, they had disappeared from ICEs online detainee locator and no one at the facility was making initial custody or bond determinations, the civil rights groups said.Immigration is a federal issue, and Florida agencies and the private contracts hired by the state have no authority to operate the facility, the civil rights groups argued in asking that their lawsuit be certified as a class action.Florida Republican Gov. What to know after the US deports more migrants to Africa2025-08-28T13:51:48Z CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) Rwanda has become the third African nation to receive deportees from the United States as the Trump administration expands its program to send migrants to countries they have no ties with.A Rwandan government spokesperson said Thursday that seven deportees arrived in the East African country earlier this month. No announcement was made at the time. Rwanda did say in early August that it had agreed to take up to 250 deportees but declined then to say when the first would arrive. Two other African nations, South Sudan and Eswatini, have already accepted a small number of deportees from the U.S. in what have also been secretive deals, while Uganda said last week it has an agreement in principle to take deportees.Heres what we know about the deportations of migrants from the U.S. RwandaRwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said the seven deportees are being visited by representatives from the United Nations migration agency and Rwandan social services. Three of them want to return to their home countries while the other four wish to stay and build lives in Rwanda, she said. The Rwandan government didnt say where the deportees are being held. There was no information on their identities, nationalities or if they have criminal records. Deportees previously sent to South Sudan and Eswatini were all described by U.S. authorities as dangerous criminals. Rwandas deal with the U.S. follows a contentious migrant agreement it reached with the U.K. in 2022 collapsed and was ruled unlawful by Britains Supreme Court. That deal was meant to see people seeking asylum in the U.K. sent to Rwanda, where they would stay if their asylum applications were approved. UgandaUganda, which borders Rwanda, said it would accept deportees from the U.S. as long as they dont have criminal records or are unaccompanied minors. The U.S. has said it wants to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whose case has become a flashpoint in Trumps immigration crackdown, to Uganda.Like the other countries, Uganda didnt give any other details of its deal with the U.S. or what it might gain from accepting deported migrants. African nations might get a range of benefits for accepting deportees and improving their relations with the Trump administration. We are sacrificing human beings for political expediency, in this case because Uganda wants to be in the good books of the United States, Ugandan human rights lawyer Nicholas Opio said when his country announced it was seeking a deal with the U.S.South SudanThe U.S. sent eight men from South Sudan, Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar and Vietnam to South Sudan in July after their deportations were held up by a legal challenge. That led to them being kept for weeks in a converted shipping container at an American military base in nearby Djibouti.U.S. officials said the men had been convicted of violent crimes in the U.S. South Sudans government said it would ensure their safety and wellbeing but has declined to say where the men are being held and what their fate might be.South Sudan has been wracked by conflict since it gained independence from Sudan in 2011 and is teetering on the edge of civil war again. EswatiniTwo weeks after the South Sudan deportations, the U.S. announced that it had sent five other men citizens of Vietnam, Jamaica, Cuba, Yemen and Laos to the small kingdom of Eswatini, in southern Africa. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security described them as violent criminals whose home countries had refused to take them back.Eswatinis government said the men would be held in solitary confinement until their repatriation, and later said that might take up to a year. A human rights lawyer in Eswatini has taken the authorities to court alleging the men are being denied legal representation while being held in a maximum-security prison.Eswatini, which borders South Africa, is one of the worlds last absolute monarchies. King Mswati III has ruled since he turned 18 in 1986 and authorities under him are accused of violently subduing pro-democracy movements.___AP news on the Trump administration: https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump0 Reacties 0 aandelen 4 Views 0 voorbeeld

WWW.404MEDIA.COImgur's Community Is In Full Revolt Against Its OwnerThe front page of Imgur, a popular image hosting and social media site, is full of pictures of John Oliver raising his middle finger and telling MediaLab AI, the sites parent company, fuck you. Imgurians, as the sites users call themselves, telling their business daddy to go to hell is the end result of a years-long degradation of the website. The Imgur story is one a classic case of enshitification,Imgur began life in 2009 when Ohio University student Alan Schaaf got tired of how hard it was to upload and host images on the internet. He created Imgur as a simple one stop shop for image hosting and the service took off. It was a place where people could host images they wanted to share across multiple services and became ubiquitous on sites like Reddit. As the internet evolved, most of the rest of the internet got its act together and platforms built their own image sharing infrastructure and people used Imgur less. But the site still had a community of millions of people who shared images to the site every day. It was a social media based around images and upvotes, with its own in-jokes, memes, and norms. In 2021, a media holding company called MediaLab AI acquired Imgur and Schaaf left. MediaLab AI also owns Genius and World Star and on its website, the company bills itself as a place where advertisers can reach audiences at scale, on platforms that build community and influence culture. The community and culture of Imgur, which MedialLab AI claims is 41 million strong, is pissed. For the last few days, the front page of Imgur (which cultivates the days most viral posts) has been full of anti MediaLab AI sentiment. Imgurian VoidForScreaming posted the first instance of the John Oliver meme several days ago, and its become a favorite of the community, but there are also calls to flood the servers and crash the site, and a list of grievances Imgurians broadly agree brought them to the place theyre in now.GhostTater, a longtime Imgurian, told me that the protest was about a confluence of things including a breakdown of the basic features of the site and the disappearance of human moderators. The moderators on imgur have always been active members of the community. Many were effectively public figures, and their sudden group absence was immediately noticed, they said. Several very well-known mods posted generic departure messages, smelling strongly of Legal Department approval. These mods had many friends and acquaintances on the site, and while some are still visiting the site as users, they have gone completely silent.A former Imgur employee who spoke with 404 Media on the condition that we preserve their anonymity because theyre afraid of retaliation from MediaLab AI said that several people on the Imgur team were laid off without notice. Others were moved to MediaLabs internal teams. To the best of my knowledge, no employees are remaining solely focused on Imgur. Imgur's social media has been silent for a month, the employee said. As far as I am aware, the dedicated part-time moderation team was laid off sometime in the last 8 months, including the full-time moderation manager.Imgurians are convinced that MediaLab AI has replaced those moderators with unreliable AI systems. The Community & Content Policy on MediaLab AIs website says it employs human moderators but also uses AI technologies. A common post in the past few days is Imgurians sharing the weird things theyve been banned for, including one who made the comment tell me more under a post and others whove seen their John Olivers removed. There were no humans responding to appeals or concerns, GhostTater said. Once the protest started, many users complained about posts being deleted and suspensions or bans being handed out when those posts were critical of MediaLab but not in violation of the written rules. But this isnt just about bad moderation. Multiple posts on Imgur also called out the breakdown of the sites basic functionality. GhostTater told me hed personally experienced the broken notification system and repeated failures of images to upload. The big one (to me) is the fact that hosted video wouldnt play for viewers who were not logged in to Imgur, he said. The site began as an image hosting site, a place to upload your images and get a link, so that one could share images.MediaLab AI did not respond to 404 Medias request for comment. MediaLabs presence has seemed to many users to fall somewhere between casual institutional indifference and ruthless mechanization. Many report, and resent, feeling explicitly harvested for profit, GhostTater said.Like all companies, MediaLab AI is driven by profit. It makes money as a media holding company, scooping up popular websites and plastering them with ads. It also owns the lyrics sharing site Genius and the once-influential WorldStarHipHop. Its also being sued by many of the people it bought these sites from, including Imgurs founder. Schaaf and others have accused MediaLab AI of withholding payments owed to them as part of the sales deals they made. The John Olivers and other protest memes keep flowing. Some have set up alternative image sharing sites. There is a movement rattling around in User Submitted calling for a boycott day, suggesting that all users stay off the site on September first, GhostTater said. It has some steam, but we will have to see if it gets enough buy-in to make an impact.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 6 Views 0 voorbeeld

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRightwing pundit celebrates an unbelievable victory in wake of Minnesota shootingFar-right Infowars host Owen Shroyer appeared fairly upbeat about a church shooting in Minnesota yesterday that resulted in the deaths of two children.God bless Infowars, he said. Unbelievable victory today. Related Conservatives arent mad at male cheerleaders. Theyre mad that gay people are on TV. Shroyer was discussing the shooting that occurred yesterday at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Robin Westman, 22, allegedly shot and killed two children and injured 17 others and then killed themself. Westman may have been transgender; there is a name change document from 2020 for a person who changed their name to Robin Westman and says the minor child identifies as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification. While the vast majority of school shootings are committed by cisgender men, the right is using this one shooting to blame trans people for gun violence in general. And, for Shroyer, this is enough to make him sound elated that the shooting happened. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today So, okay, you won the first round. You got a lead-off home run on us because you pretended like you didnt know any of this in the first press conference, Shroyer said about law enforcement, according to RawStory. But now we just got up to bat in our half of the inning and we just hit a grand slam Because, yeah, again, a trans-identified person. He was talking to former FBI agent Kyle Seraphin, whose security clearance was revoked for alleged misconduct during the Biden administration, and he took credit for the information about Westmans possible name change being made public. I dont, Kyle, I dont think, I dont think any of this information gets out, A, if its not for you, quite frankly, B, if its not for now us on the show today, he said, although it wasnt clear why he believed he was personally responsible. He then said that, because Fox News is covering Westmans possible trans identity, its officially mainstream news.I think Ive probably been on air in Infowars longer than anybody not named Alex Jones, Shroyer said. Im telling you, in the last four hours, you just, we just went through a historical moment when it comes to free press, you know, versus institutional cover-up.We just went through a paramount moment where the institutional cover-up has been beaten by free independent press, he continued. God bless Infowars. Unbelievable victory today. I mean, this is, I, Im, Im stunned, Kyle. I cant even believe we just hit back-to-back grand slams in the in an inning. And now were going back out onto the mound. Seraphin appeared to be the only one of the two who remembered that they were talking about a shooting in which two children died. Yeah, it doesnt feel like a win, knowing that theres kids who didnt survivethis, he said. Shroyer was named in a lawsuit filed against InfoWars owner Alex Jones for the websites conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Shroyer suggested that it would have been impossible for the father of one of the children who was killed there to have held his childs body and suggested that the father was lying about his sons death. InfoWars was found liable and had to pay nearly $50 million in damages in that case. In 2023, Shroyer pleaded guilty to illegally entering a restricted area at the Capitol during the January 6 Capitol riot. He was sentenced to 60 days of incarceration. After the charges were announced, Shroyer released a video claiming his innocence and said he was merely at the Capitol as a journalist.Yetthe complaint filed against himquotes his appearance in a video that day saying, Today we march for the Capitol because on this historic January 6, 2021, we have to let our Congressmen and women know, and we have to let Mike Pence know, they stole the election, we know they stole it, and we arent going to accept it!On Infowars, Shroyeronce claimedMichelle Obama is a transgender woman, formerly named Michael, and ispart of a larger liberal plot to mainstream literally a Satanic culture.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 3 Views 0 voorbeeld

WWW.404MEDIA.COTrump Tariffs Cause Chaos on Ebay as Every Hobby Becomes Logistical MinefieldSubscribe Join the newsletter to get the latest updates. Success Great! Check your inbox and click the link. Error Please enter a valid email address. The Trump administration is throwing various hobbies enjoyed by Americans into chaos and is harming small businesses domestically and abroad with its ever-changing tariff structure that is turning the United States into a hermit kingdom. It has made buying and selling things on eBay particularly annoying, and is making it harder and more expensive to, for example, buy vintage film cameras, retro video games, or vintage clothes from Japan, where many of the top eBay sellers are based.Trying to figure out what the future of this hobby is going to look like for those of us in the USA (other than insanely expensive), a post on r/analogcommunity, the most popular film photography subreddit, reads. All of my lenses and my camera body came from Japan, they would have been prohibitively expensive [now], paying an extra $80 per item. I feel like entry level to this hobby is going to get hit especially hard. Another meme posted to the community under the title Shopping on eBay be like this now reads The age of the Canon Mint++ is over. The time of the Argus C3 has come, referring to a common way that Japanese eBay sellers list Japanese-made Canon cameras. The Argus C3 was a budget mass-produced, American-made camera that was not popular in Japan, and so most of the people selling them are in the United States. Some people like them, but it has been nicknamed the brick because it could serve as a deadly weapon in a street fight. It remains very inexpensive to this day.The photography hobby is a microcosm of what anyone who wants to buy anything from another country is currently experiencing. The de-minimis exemption, which allowed people to buy things internationally without paying tariffs if the items cost less than $800, made it very easy and less expensive to get into hobbies like film photography, retro video games, and vintage fashion, to name a few. The Trump administration is ending that exemption Friday and it will quickly become a financial and/or logistical mess for anyone who wants to buy or sell anything from another country. Communities and companies focused on electronics, board games, action figures, skincare, flashlights, sex toys, watches, and general ecommerce are also freaking out, stopping service to the United States, or telling U.S. customers to expect higher prices, higher fees, longer shipping times, more paperwork, more headache, and unpredictable delays. In recent days, national mail carriers in the European Union (including DHL, which is widely used internationally), Australia, India, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and, crucially, Japan, have started restricting many shipments to the United States. Some of the few remaining ways to send shipments internationally to the United States is through UPS and FedEx, which have warned customers that the end of de-minimis means more paperwork, higher shipping prices (both have increased their international processing fees), and also means that either the shipper or the receiver will have to pay tariffs on whatever is being sent, which of course adds both costs and processing time. This is on top of the fact that FedEx and UPS are often more expensive services in the first place.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 6 Views 0 voorbeeld

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRiley Gaines admits shes using sports as the card to make trans rights crumbleVisciously anti-trans activist Riley Gaines recently revealed that her crusade against trans athletes is a strategy to make overall trans rights crumble. A recent New York Times profile of the former collegiate swimmer who has used tying for 5th place in a 2022 meet with trans competitor Lia Thomas to build a career as a right-wing influencer explained how Gaines positions have become increasingly radical, growing from outrage over Thomas ability to compete in a womens race to a belief that trans people do not actually exist at all. Related Schools forfeit matches against volleyball team with trans player the president complained about In 2022, she used female pronouns for Ms. Thomas and emphasized that she affirmed her gender identity, the Times explained. I am in full support of her and full support of her transition and her swimming career and everything like that, she told The Daily Wire days after the race. Now, offensiveness is a part of her brand.Indeed, it is almost shocking now to see that Gaines once acknowledged at least some nuance in the conversation. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In comparison, she recently told right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk, This is the most basic of truths: man and woman. Its the sheer essence of humanity, a truth we have never struggled to understand in the nearly 250 years weve been established as a country, and certainly much longer than that. Hate to break it to every single person listening to this, you are all here from man and woman, and that is what were being asked to deny. She also told Kirk, The gender ideology movement as a whole really is an attempt to normalize pedophilia. Her extreme rhetoric, along with that of her party, has contributed to views against trans athletes becoming increasingly mainstream, as the Times put it. The rights fearmongering has succeeded at shifting the conversation on trans athletes, with many major universities and organizations caving to the administrations anti-trans sports mandates and even some Democratic politicians openly admitting they are against trans women playing on womens teams. And now Gaines has admitted that the sports issue is just a way in to toppling trans rights overall. The gender ideology movement is a house of cards, and I believe its lying on that sports issue, she told the Times. This will be the card that makes all of it crumble. The strategy, the profile explained, hinges on the idea that if people accept that trans women shouldnt participate in sports, then they inherently accept that they are not fully women, which will then lead to a toppling of their rights in other arenas.Gaines motivation for doing all of this is unclear, but she has certainly risen to prominence through the war shes waged. She also says openly that the focus on trans athletes is a ruse to push trans people out of public life entirely, i.e. if the Supreme Court says trans people can (or even must) be discriminated against in sports then her friends will argue we also have no rights anywhere else https://t.co/LIAH14u9gH Gillian Branstetter (@GBBranstetter) August 27, 2025The profile also called out Gaines for seemingly making up a story about an interaction she allegedly had with a transgender University of Kentucky coach. Gaines said at the tournament where Thomas competed, she found the coach crying over the turmoil. She claimed she misgendered the coach and told him that no one cares how you feel and that the coach then filed a harassment claim against her with the school. To Ms. Gaines, it was a story that depicted her speaking harshly or boldly to a transgender person, and then in turn being victimized by him, the Times said. However, the writer investigated those claims and found no record of a harassment complaint against Gaines. A spokesperson for the coach also said he never filed a complaint and doesnt remember that moment between him and Gaines happening at all.But the Times also pointed out that Gainess audiences welcome stories like this, whether they are true or not. And Gaines, it seems, has realized exactly what she needs to say to rile up her fans.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 3 Views 0 voorbeeld

THEONION.COMCEO Worried 23-Year-Old Only Into Him For His Keen Business AcumenPHOENIXIn an intense bout of insecurity and wariness toward his partners superficial focus, Fortune 500 CEO William Freitag, 57, reportedly expressed concerns Thursday that the 23-year-old woman he was currently dating was only into him for his keen business acumen. Im trying not to let it get to me, but deep down I cant help feeling shes just like all the rest and only with me because she wants networking tips and access to my strong client basea tale as old as time, really, said the multimillionaire head of Summit Network Systems, expressing bitterness after dinner with the young office assistant, who he speculated was only seeing him as an excuse to pick his brain for financial advice and team leadership expertise. Look, Im not a sucker. Im well aware she wouldnt agree to be seen in public with me if I didnt have my talent for negotiation and the respect of my clients. Women like that only have one thing on their minds: finding a guy who has increased operating revenues year over year for each of the past three fiscal quarters. At press time, Freitag admitted he was only dating the woman for her comprehensive knowledge of Gracie Abrams discography. The post CEO Worried 23-Year-Old Only Into Him For His Keen Business Acumen appeared first on The Onion.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 3 Views 0 voorbeeld

APNEWS.COMWhat polling shows about Trumps pivot from immigration to crimePresident Donald Trump speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)2025-08-28T15:25:09Z WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trumps recent focus on crime in Washington D.C. and other big cities has come as views of his handling of immigration the early focus of his second term had been flagging as polls signaled rising concerns that he was taking his mass deportation campaign too far, an analysis by The Associated Press shows. Trumps approach to crime is now a clear strength for him, according to a new poll from The AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. It found about half of U.S. adults 53% approve of his approach, higher than support his handling of immigration, the economy or the Russia-Ukraine war. Thats despite outcry from D.C. residents and Democratic leaders over his takeover of the citys police department and his deployment of the National Guard and the fact that violent crime is down both in Washington and across the nation following a pandemic-era spike. Trumps tough-on-crime turn happened alongside a small boost in his overall approval rating. Just under half, 45%, of Americans now approve of his performance as president, up from 40% in July. Its another case of Trump shifting the national conversation to his advantage, often by seizing on Americans most deep-seated fears and using hyperbolic language and shock-and-awe tactics that push legal bounds. The businessman and reality TV star-turned-politician has deftly used the tactic throughout his political career to dominate news cycles and redirect public attention from sometimes politically damaging topics. Crime has traditionally been one of Republicans stronger issues, so its not a real surprise that he has pushed that to the top of the agenda and that people favor him, said veteran Republican pollster Whit Ayers. The AP-NORC poll found that crime in large cities is a major concern for 81% of U.S. adults as the topic has become a top story in both conservative and mainstream news outlets.Hes elevated it as an issue, Ayers said. And if youre in the White House youd much rather be talking about crime than tariffs or inflation or a stalemate in Ukraine or than Jeffrey Epstein. The public appears to sours on Trumps immigration pushIt was clear early in Trumps second term that immigration was one of his strengths, as it had been during the 2024 campaign. In March, an AP-NORC poll found about half of U.S. adults approved of the way he was handling immigration putting it above other key issues like the economy. But that advantage had disappeared by the summer, when a July AP-NORC poll found only 43% of U.S. adults approved of his approach. Other polls found the same, suggesting that Americans might be souring on his aggressive action amid headlines about college students being whisked off city streets by masked federal agents and men who were alleged to be gang members wrongly sent to a notorious Salvadorian torture prison with no due process.A July CNN/SSRS poll found that 55% of Americans said that Trump had gone too far on deporting immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, up 10 points in February. In the latest AP-NORC poll, Trumps standing on immigration remains underwater, as does his handling of the economy, which has risen slightly, from 38% in July to 43% now. But both of those issues are now dwarfed by his advantage on crime including among key groups like independents. Trumps pivot to crime While Trump had long threatened a federal takeover of Washington, D.C., which has limited autonomy because it is not a state, his focus on the city came after one of the most prominent members of the Department of Government Efficiency was the victim of an attempted carjacking and beating earlier this month. After Edward Coristine, nicknamed Big Balls, was assaulted by a group of teenagers, Trump threaten to seize control of a city he deemed out of control.Days later he posted photos of homeless encampments and garbage strewn across city streets after a Sunday morning motorcade ride to his Sterling, Virginia golf course and announced he would be holding a news conference the next day to unveil his takeover plans. Be prepared! There will be no MR. NICE GUY. We want our Capital BACK. he wrote on Truth Social.Trumps takeover of the citys police department and his activation of the National Guard wasnt his first such action. In early June, he ordered the deployment of about 4,000 California National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines in early June to respond to protests against immigration raids in and around the city. Its not his first pivot to crime at a politically challenging moment. During the 2020 campaign, Trump activated federal agents to fight crime in Chicago and Albuquerque and warned suburbanites of rising crime as he struggled with a flagging approval rating. Trumps overall approval remains steadyTrumps ability to change the conversation may have helped him weather controversy over the years. His presidential approval numbers remained within a relatively narrow band during his first term, according to AP-NORC polling, a pattern thats persisted so far in his second. And even when he was out of office, his favorability rating remained remarkably stable.Tim Roemer, 59, a lifelong Democrat who lives in Utica, New York, is opposed to the presidents efforts to take over city police departments and Trumps use of the National Guard, given that crime numbers are down across the nation. He said it seemed Trump was seizing on an issue and taking credit for improvements to help himself politically in upcoming elections.I think hes trying to keep his numbers up because he knows the 2026 midterms are coming up and he knows its going to hurt him if his numbers are down, he said. He knows how to win people over, unfortunately.A campaign promiseAt the same time, Trump and the White House have not abandoned their unprecedented focus on immigration. The Republican administration still frequently talks about the issue, and the presidents rhetoric on crime and immigration are closely tied.As part of the D.C. takeover, federal authorities have set up checkpoints across the city, where they have asked people about their immigration status and detained them. According to the White House, of the 1,170 people arrested since the takeover began, at least 319 were related to immigration issues. The American Immigration Council, a non-profit that advocates for immigrants rights, has called the D.C. deployment a Backdoor for Immigration Enforcement " and note the administration has used its takeover to force the Districts police to cooperate with immigration enforcement in an unprecedented way.The White House also disputed the idea that Trump had shifted focus. During his campaign, they noted, he spoke often about crime, accusing then-President Joe Biden and Democrats of having turned our once great cities into cesspools of bloodshed and crime, even though statistics refute that claim. His campaign released a pair of policy videos in which he pledged to End Crime and Restore Law and Order and the Nightmare of the Homeless, Drug Addicts, and Dangerously Deranged on American Streets and threatened to send in federal assets including the National Guard.Making America Safe Again was a key campaign promise for President Trump he has long talked about addressing violent crime, especially in our nations capital, and ensuring all Americans feel safe in their communities, said White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson.___ Colvin reported from New York.___The AP-NORC poll of 1,182 adults was conducted Aug. 21-25, using a sample drawn from NORCs probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. JILL COLVIN Colvin is an Associated Press national political reporter covering the 2024 presidential campaign. WWW.PRIDE.COMWhat is a 'black cat boyfriend' and do the gays want one? A dating expert explainsFeel like you're always drawn to a mysterious bad boy, but sick of all the drama and baggage that comes with them? What you may actually be seeking is the illusive black cat boyfriend."Not sure what that means? Well consider the labrador boyfriend that was all the rage, you know, the himbo with a heart of gold that lives for pleasing their partner and practically wags their tail whenever theyre around yeah the black cat is essentially the opposite of that. That's not to say that they arent just as loving, it's just that those still waters run deep. Real deep. So, to dive a little deeper PRIDE spoke with Dylan Thomas Cotter, author, trans activist, former adult entertainer, Scruff dating app ambassador, and author of Transgender & Triggering The Life of Dylan Thomas Cotter and self described black cat boyfriend who breaks down the meaning of the term and if queer folks should be looking to adopt a black cat of thier own before cuffing season is upon us. What is a "black cat boyfriend" and where did the term originate? The term, Cotter tells PRIDE, was coined by USA Todays Alyssa Goldberg in a piece about a new trend of love interests taking over television that present a different kind of masculinityone that is both withdrawn and emotionally deep. She saw it as a reaction to the doe-eyed boys who woo their partners with doting affections and a bubbly energy that would be over-the-top if not so endearing, which exemplifies the labrador boyfriend. But what does that mean? The black cat boyfriend is usually known as more introverted, enigmatic and brooding; they mimic characteristics typically associated with the black cat, says Cotter, adding that it applies across the gender and presentation spectrum. The black cat dating term, used interchangeably for both femmes and mascs has picked up steam on TikTok and also was referenced in pop culture, he says. What are the qualities of a black cat boyfriend"?Black cat boyfriends tend to be more reserved and less social, says Cotter. I am very selective with my social energy, therefore I maintain high standards and am selectively affectionate. I am confident operating in the world knowing my worth and choose to only surround myself with those who will not compromise my values or waste my time.More often than not other people rely on being liked as to where we do not, he continues. The powerful energy we possess in relation to this, makes us come across as intimidating to the weak and intriguing and magnetising to the strong, says Cotter. While their inner circle may be smaller, their loyalty is intense, says Cotterbut trust must be earned. Once we have been won over, we are hyper-protective of our partners and are extremely loyal and emotionally very deep individuals. And their standards? Immovable, says Cotter. in all aspects of life and will not settle for anything beneath our worth. Is there a "black cat girlfriend" equivalent? Its not just the gays and folks who date men who can find themselves a black cat boyfriend, because its not really about gender. Sapphics can find one, too. In queer culture there are absolutely black cat girlfriends who are independent, mysterious and protective of their partners just as there are for people who are attracted to men, assures Cotter.Ultimately, if what youre seeking is a partner who is less of a social butterfly but who is fiercely loyal and yet independent, a black cat boyfriend may be just what youre seeking. We are good with ourselves, our partners and trusted friends. We do not need superficial ego strokes, he says. That said, if you can land a black cat boyfriend expect a lot of raw liberating erotic energy in the bedroom and for the insecure and jealous people in your life to be intimidated by the powerful, quiet confident aura that we exude.Meow.Expert cited: Dylan Thomas Cotter, author, trans activist, former adult entertainer, Scruff dating app ambassador, and author of Transgender & Triggering The Life of Dylan Thomas Cotter0 Reacties 0 aandelen 2 Views 0 voorbeeld
