APNEWS.COMEpstein survivors implore Congress to act as push for disclosure buildsAttendees raise their hands to press congress to release the Jeffrey Epstein files during a news conference at the U.S. Capitol, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana)2025-09-03T18:08:18Z WASHINGTON (AP) Survivors of Jeffrey Epsteins sexual abuse made their voices heard Tuesday on Capitol Hill, pressuring lawmakers to force the release of the sex trafficking investigation into the late financier and pushing back President Donald Trumps effort to dismiss the issue as a hoax.In a news conference on the Capitol lawn that drew hundreds of supporters and chants of release the files, the women shared some publicly for the first time how they were lured into Epsteins abuse by his former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell. They demanded that the Trump administration provide transparency and accountability for what they endured as teenagers. It was a striking stand as the push for disclosure of the so-called Epstein files reached a pivotal moment in Washington. Lawmakers are battling over how Congress should delve into the Epstein saga while the Republican president, after initially signaling support for transparency on the campaign trail, has been dismissing the matter as a Democrat hoax. No matter what you do its going to keep going, Trump said Wednesday. He added, Really, I think its enough. But the survivors on Capitol Hill, as well as at least one of Trumps closest allies in Congress, disagreed. Some of the women pleaded for Trump to support their cause. It feels like you just want to explode inside because nobody, again, is understanding that this is a real situation. These women are real. Were here in person, said Haley Robson, one of the survivors who said she is a registered Republican. Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial in 2019 on charges that said he sexually abused and trafficked dozens of underage girls. The case was brought more than a decade after he secretly cut a deal with federal prosecutors in Florida to dispose of nearly identical allegations. Epstein was accused of paying underage girls hundreds of dollars in cash for massages and then molesting them. Maxwell, Epsteins longtime confidant and former girlfriend, was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in prison for luring teenage girls for him to abuse. Four women testified at her trial that they were abused by Epstein as teens in the 1990s and early 2000s at his homes in Florida, New York and New Mexico. The allegations have also spawned dozens of lawsuits.Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is usually closely aligned with Trump, described her support for a bill that would force the Justice Department to release the information it has compiled on Epstein as a moral fight against sexual predation. This isnt one political party or the other. Its a culmination of everyone work together to silence these women and protect Jeffrey Epstein and his cabal, Greene said at the news conference. She is one of four Republicans three of them women who have defied House GOP leadership and the White House in an effort to force a vote on their bill. House Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to quash the effort by putting forward his own resolution and arguing that a concurrent investigation by the House Oversight Committee is the best way for Congress to deliver transparency. I think the Oversight probe is going to be wide and expansive, and theyre going to follow the truth wherever it leads, Johnson, R-La., said.He added that the White House was complying with the committee to release information and that he had spoken with Trump about it Tuesday night. He says, Get it out there, put it all out there, Johnson told reporters. The Oversight Committee on Tuesday night released what it said was the first tranche of documents and files it has received from the Justice Department on the Epstein case. The folders posted on Google Drive contained hundreds of image files of years-old court filings related to Epstein, but contained practically nothing new.Meanwhile, the White House was warning House members that support for the bill to require the DOJ to release the files would be seen as a hostile act. Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican who is pressing for the bill, said that the White House was sending that message because Theyve dug in. They decided they dont want it released, he said. Its a political threat. But with Trump sending a strong message and Republican leadership moving forward with an alternative resolution, Massie was left looking for support from at least two more Republicans willing to cross political lines. It would take six GOP members, as well as all House Democrats, to force a vote on their bill. And even if that passes the House, it would still need to pass the Senate and be signed by Trump.Still, the survivors saw this moment as their best chance in years to gain some justice for what had been done by Epstein, who died in as New York jail cell in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges. Justice and accountability are not favors from the powerful. They are obligations decades overdue Jess Michaels, a survivor who said she was first abused by Epstein in 1991, told the rally on the Capitol lawn. This moment began with Epsteins crimes. But its going to be remembered for survivors demanding justice, demanding truth, demanding accountability. APNEWS.COMTrump suggests National Guard could go into New Orleans, a blue city in a red statePresident Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki in the Oval Office of the White House, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)2025-09-03T18:19:31Z WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump suggested Wednesday that New Orleans could be his next target for deploying the National Guard to fight crime, potentially expanding the number of cities around the nation where he may send federal law enforcement.Trump has already said he plans to send the National Guard into Chicago and Baltimore following his administration deploying troops and federal agents to patrol the streets of Washington, D.C., last month. So were making a determination now, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki. Do we go to Chicago? Do we go to a place like New Orleans, where we have a great governor, Jeff Landry, who wants us to come in and straighten out a very nice section of this country thats become quite, you know, quite tough, quite bad.Trump now frequently boasts about turning Washington into a safe zone. The White House reports more than 1,760 arrests citywide since the president first announced he was mobilizing federal forces on Aug. 7. But Washington is a federal district subject to laws giving Trump power to take over the local police force for up to 30 days. The decision to use troops to attempt to quell crime in other Democratic-controlled cities around the country would represent an important escalation. Trumps latest comments came a day after he declared Were going in and suggested that the National Guard might soon be headed for Chicago, the nations third-largest city, and Baltimore. Thats despite state and local officials, as well as many residents, both places staunchly opposing the idea. New Orleans, however, is a Democrat-controlled in a red state run by Landry. So were going to be going to maybe Louisiana, and you have New Orleans, which has a crime problem. Well straighten that out in about two weeks, Trump said. Itll take us two weeks, easier than D.C. City leaders immediately balked at the idea. Crime is down in New Orleans, City Councilmember Oliver Thomas, who is also a mayoral candidate, said via text message. That would seem to be very political or a major overreaction!Trump, meanwhile, has repeatedly railed against Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker for not requesting that the National Guard be deployed. We could straighten out Chicago. All they have to do is ask us to go into Chicago. If we dont have the support of some of these politicians, but Ill tell you who is supporting us, the people of Chicago, Trump said Wednesday. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have been adamant in saying Chicago doesnt need or want military intervention. In Baltimore, Mayor Brandon Scott and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore have remained similarly opposed. In Washington, Mayor Muriel Bowser has said Trumps decision to take over her citys police force and flood streets with hundreds of federal law enforcement agents and National Guard troops has succeeded in reducing violent crime but shes also argued that similar results could have been achieved simply by having more city police officers in service.___Associated Press writer Jack Brook in New Orleans contributed to this report. APNEWS.COMTrump says US strike targeting Venezuelan gang will cause cartels to think twicePresident Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki in the Oval Office of the White House, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)2025-09-03T18:05:50Z WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump on Wednesday justified the lethal military strike that his administration said was carried out a day earlier against a Venezuelan gang as a necessary effort by the United States to send an unmistakable message to Latin American cartels.Asked why the military did not instead interdict the vessel and capture those on board, Trump said the operation would cause drug smugglers to think twice about trying to move drugs into the U.S.There was massive amounts of drugs coming into our country to kill a lot of people, and, everybody fully understands that, Trump said while hosting Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the White House. He added, Obviously, they wont be doing it again. And I think a lot of other people wont be doing it again. When they watch that tape, theyre going to say, Lets not do this. Tuesdays strike was an astonishing departure from typical U.S. drug interdiction efforts at a time when Trump has ordered a major Navy buildup in the waters near Venezuela.Earlier Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Fox & Friends that the strike could mark the start of a campaign against Venezuelan cartels that Trump blames for bringing fentanyl and other illicit drugs into the U.S. Hegseth also charged that Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro was running his country as a kingpin of a drug narco-state. Hegseth said officials knew exactly who was in that boat and exactly what they were doing. But the Republican administration has not presented any evidence supporting Trumps claim that operators of the vessel were from the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and were trying to smuggle in drugs.President Trump is willing to go on offense in ways that others have not seen, said Hegseth, who declined to detail how the strike was carried out. Similarly, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that such operations would continue if needed. Were going to take on drug cartels wherever they are and wherever theyre operating against the interests of the United States, he said Tuesday.Trump and administration officials have repeatedly blamed the gang for being at the root of the violence and illicit drug dealing that plague some American cities. The president on Tuesday repeated his claim contradicted by a declassified U.S. intelligence assessment that Tren de Aragua is operating under Maduros control. In announcing the strike, he said the operation, which he said killed 11, was carried out in international waters. Some international warfare experts are questioning the legality of the strike.Intentional killing outside armed conflict hostilities is unlawful unless it is to save a life immediately, said Mary Ellen OConnell, an expert on international law and the use of force at the University of Notre Dame Law School. No hostilities were occurring in the Caribbean.Hegseth was opaque in his comments on Fox about whether Trump was looking to press for regime change in Venezuela.Well, thats a presidential decision, Hegseth said. He added that anyone would prefer that Maduro would just give himself up. But thats a presidential-level decision. The U.S. announced plans last month to boost its maritime force in the waters off Venezuela to combat threats from Latin American drug cartels.Maduros government has responded by deploying troops along Venezuelas coast and border with neighboring Colombia, as well as by urging Venezuelans to enlist in a civilian militia. WWW.404MEDIA.COGoogle AI Falsely Says YouTuber Visited Israel, Forcing Him to Deal With BacklashScience and music YouTuber Benn Jordan had a rough few days earlier this week after Googles AI Summary falsely said he recently visited Israel and caused people to believe he supported the country during its war on Gaza. Jordan does not support Israel and has previously donated to Palestinian charities.Jordan told 404 Media that when people type his name into Google its often followed by eyebrows or wife. That changed when popular political Twitch streamer Hasan Piker decided to react to his video about Flock AI, an AI powered camera company that 404 Media has covered extensively. Jordans videos have appeared on Pikers stream before, so he knew he was in for a bit of a ride. Anytime that he has reacted to my content Im always like Oh no, Im going to get eviscerated in front of millions of people for being a libertarian without being able to explain my views, he said. This time it was a little different, however. I looked at it and in the middle of it, his chat was kind of going crazy, saying that I support Israels genocidal behavior, Jordan said. And then I started getting a bunch of messages from people asking me why I dont make myself clear about Israel, or why I support Israel and Ive donated plenty of money to the Palestinian Childrens Relief Fund. Ive been pretty vocal in the past about not supporting Israel and supporting a free Palestinian state. Then someone sent him a screenshot of the AI generated summary of a Google search result that explained the deluge of messages. If you typed Benn Jordan Israel into Google and looked only at its AI summary, this is what it told you:Electronic musician and science YouTuber Benn Jordan has recently become involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, leading to significant controversy and discussion online. He has shared his experiences from a trip to Israel, during which he interviewed people from kibbutzim near the Gaza border, the AI summary said, according to a screenshot Jordan shared on Bluesky. On August 18, 2025, Benn Jordan uploaded a YouTube video titled I Was Wrong About Israel: What I Learned On the Ground, which detailed his recent trip to Israel.Jordan had never been to Israel and he doesn't make content about war. His videos live at the cross section of science and sound and he went viral earlier this year when he converted a PNG sketch into an audio waveform and taught the song to a young starling, effectively saving a digital image in the memory of a bird. Hes also covered the death of Spotify, crumbling American capitalism, and the unique dangers AI poses to musicians. It seemed that Googles AI had confused Jordan with the YouTuber Ryan McBeth, a guy who does make videos about war. McBeth is a chainsmoking NEWSMAX commentator who has a video titled I Was Wrong About Israel: What I Learned on the Ground, the exact same title Google thought Jordan was responsible for.Its a weird mistake for AI to make, but AI makes a lot of mistakes. AI generated songs are worse than real ones, AI generated search results funnel traffic away from the sites where Google gets the information it is summarizing and are often wrong. Jordans experience is just one small sample of what happens when people take AI at face value without doing five minutes of extra research. When Jordan learned he was being misrepresented by the AI summary, he started sharing the story on Bluesky and Threads. He told 404 Media that the AI summary updated itself about 24 hours later. Eventually the AI picked up me posting about it and then said that there was a rumor about me, a false rumor, spread about me going to Israel. And then I was just kind of ripping the hair out of my head. I was like, you dont even know that you created the rumor! He told 404 Media that he thought it might be possible that Googles AI had defamed him and he reached out to lawyers for an opinion, not as a prelude to a lawsuit but more out of curiosity. One told him he may have a case. Im going to Yellowstone next week for 10 days. Im going to be completely off the grid, Jordan said. Had this happened, and had this continued to spread around and become a giant controversy, I would probably lose YouTube subscribers, I would lose Patreon members.Jordan has covered AI in the past and said he wasnt shocked by the system breaking down. Everybodys rushing LLMs to be part of our daily lives [...] But the actual LLM itself is not good. Its just not what they claim it is. It may never be what they claim it is due to the limitations of how LLMs work and AI works, and despite the promises that are made. Its just a really bad algorithm for gaining any sort of useful information that you can trust and its prioritizing that above journalists to keep the money. In the aftermath of the whole thing, Jordan clarified his position on the Israel-Palestine conflict. In a thread on Bluesky he said he does think that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and why. Hopefully, somebody sees that before they waste their time to message me to lecture me about genocide, he said. Although, now Im being lectured about genocide from the other side. Now I have skin in it. Now Im dealing with messages from people defending Israel, telling me that Im antisemetic. This isnt the first time Googles AI summary has screwed up the basic facts about someone with a public profile. In July, humorist Dave Barry discovered that Googles AI summary thought he had died last year after a battle with cancer. Barry is very much alive and detailed his fight to correct the record of his demise in his newsletter. Like Jordan, Googles AI overview shifted. Unlike Jordan, it changed after Barry fought with Googles various automated complaint systems. When an AI makes mistakes like this we tend to call it a hallucination. Jordan used the word when he posted the updated summary of his life. Ive thought about it the last few days, and thats giving it so much credit, that it could hallucinate something Jordan said. Generally, its not great at scraping data and retrieving it in a way thats reputable.Google acknowledged our request for comment but did not provide one in time for publication.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 48 Views 0 önizleme

WWW.PRIDE.COMDylan O'Brien and Tyler Posey's red carpet lovefest is healing Teen Wolf fansIts been over eight years since Teen Wolf ended, and even longer since we saw Scott and Stiles together in the wild but that all changed this week, and the internet isnt okay.At the Los Angeles premiere of Twinless on September 2, Dylan OBrienwho stars in and executive produced the filmwas met on the carpet by his former Teen Wolf co-star Tyler Posey. What followed was a hug-heavy, shoulder-grabby, full-body nostalgia spiral that had fans screaming, crying, and allegedly manifesting this moment in their dreams.Long embrace doesnt quite cover it. The two launched into an animated conversation caught by The Hollywood Reporter, with Posey laughing, touching OBriens shoulders, and refusing to let goliterally and metaphorically. (@) While the reunion looked sweet and casual to the untrained eye, long-time fans know how rare this actually is. OBrien famously didnt appear in Teen Wolf: The Movie in 2023, nor was he able to attend Poseys wedding to musician Phem later that year. Posey explained both absences, saying he was invited, but busy with the latter, and insisting there was no love lost between them over the movie. Despite public appearances seeming okay, that hasnt stopped the fandom from speculating (or spiraling) ever since. And now? The floodgates are open. (@) TELL ME YOU'RE CRYING TOO, one fan wrote, while another added, They were away for so long, I cant lose them ever again. (@) A third, still processing the shock, said, I genuinely just got my Twitter working again and Dylan O'Brien and Tyler Posey reunited?!?!!?!???? And you expect me to be okay??! (@) Some wondered if the actors felt the same wayDo you think they had the same nostalgic rush as the rest of us and lowkey also wanted to die?and others, somehow, saw it coming: Tyler Posey and Dylan OBrien were in my dream last night and I wake up to see they were together. Coincidence? Probably. I do think about them a lot. (@) With Twinless set to premiere this Friday, we dont know if this was a one-time red carpet moment or the beginning of a new era of public bestie energy. (@) All we know is: whatever made this reunion possible? Thank you. The girls, the gays, and the werewolves needed it.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 31 Views 0 önizleme

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMA strict parental consent law is preventing crisis hotline workers from helping youth in needA strict parental consent law is impeding Idahos crisis and suicide hotline from supporting struggling youth across the state, staffers report. Last year, Republicans passed Senate Bill 1329, which banned all healthcare providers from treating minors without prior consent from a parent or legal guardian unless treatment is necessary in order to prevent death or imminent, irreparable physical injury to the minor child. Related Protestors across Florida rally against rainbow crosswalk removals: We will not be erased The law was championed by the anti-LGBTQ+ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom, with the groups Senior Counsel Matt Sharp decrying instances nationwide of government officials actively seeking to replace parents as the ultimate determiners of whats best for children. (This common conservative argument against trans health care is completely counter to the GOPs actions banning health care providers and parents from making the best medical decisions for children regarding transition care.) At the time, opponents of the legislation posited that it was another way for the GOP to restrict teens ability to terminate a pregnancy or access gender-affirming care, though Idaho already has a law on the books making it a felony to provide gender-affirming care for trans youth. Now, folks who staff the states 988 Crisis and Suicide Hotline say their work has also been significantly limited by the law. In many cases, they say they now have to ask the kids who call to put a parent on the phone who can grant them permission to continue the conversation. In most situations, the minor hangs up because they tell us they feel like they cant do that, the hotlines director, Lee Flinn, told the Idaho Capital Sun. We really do want and hope that minors have a parent or two parents that support them, but one of the things that we hear sometimes is that they dont have a parent they can talk to.While the legislation does permit providers to treat kids without parental consent if they determine their life is in immediate danger, Lee said young people call in all the time who are clearly in serious crisis but still dont meet that very high bar.If a teenager tells us they are suicidal but theyre not at imminent risk, meaning they may not have a plan, they may not have access to lethal means, theyre still feeling suicidal and it is best practice to offer a follow up call the next day within 24 hours, she added. And were not able to offer that follow up call or support to minors because of this law. The problem is especially significant for LGBTQ+ youth, who are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide as non-LGBTQ+ youth. The sponsors of the bill, state Rep. Barbara Ehardt (R) and state Senate Pro Tempore Kelly Anthon (R), have acknowledged that some language in the law should be clarified to prevent situations like the hotline is experiencing. She told the Capital Sun she did not know about its challenges but that she had said from the beginning that we wanted to keep an eye on things pertaining to suicide.I think thats worth looking at, she added. Anthon also proposed a bill earlier this year clarifying several components of the law, including an explicit exception for kids calling in to the crisis hotline. The bill passed the state house but was never brought to a vote in the senate. According to Ehardt, who said she thinks the law has been interpreted too broadly, it came too late in the session. She plans to propose a new bill in early 2026. The Movement Advancement Project has scored Idaho -9.5 out of 49 when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. Among many other hostile policies, the state bans trans students from playing on sports teams and using school facilities that align with their gender identity. It also has no nondiscrimination laws protecting LGBTQ+ students, and effective July 1, school districts are banned from lessons on LGBTQ+ issues in kindergarten through 12th grade.According to the Idaho Capital Sun, at least 10 anti-LGBTQ+ policies have been adopted in the state in 2025 alone. If this story affected you, just know you are not alone. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMHouse Republicans funding bill would cut $1.7 billion from U.S. HIV programsRepublicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are aiming to cut $1.7 billion from domestic HIV prevention, treatment, and care programs. On Monday, the Republican-controlled House Appropriations Committee released its Fiscal Year 2026 funding bill for the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and related agencies. According to the Washington Blade, the bill would cut the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventions entire $1 billion in funding for HIV/AIDS prevention including state and local programs that provide HIV testing and access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Related The president just halved the budget of a massively successful HIV-prevention program The CDC cuts also include $220 million in funding for the Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative, a program launched by President Donald Trump during his first term in office. The bill would also cut funding for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Program by 20 percent. The Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee met Tuesday evening to consider the bill. As the Blade notes, if passed in the House, the bill would need to be reconciled with the bipartisan Fiscal Year 2026 budget bill passed by the Senate earlier this year, which did not include cuts to domestic HIV programs. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today In a statement, HIV + Hepatitis Policy Institute executive director Carl Schmidt said the disastrous bill would reignite HIV in the United States, according to the Blade. Schmidt urged Congress to reject the bills reckless funding cuts, explaining that Eliminating all HIV prevention means the end of state and local testing and surveillance programs, educational programs, and linkage to lifesaving care and treatment, along with PrEP and would lead to an increased number of new HIV infections, which will be costlier to treat in the long run.In a Tuesday statement, the Save HIV Funding campaign decried the bill, saying that it would put peoples lives and health at risk and increase medical costs by eviscerating the federal response to the HIV epidemic. Advocates know from experience that #CutsKill, and that the stripping of critical, life saving services for people in every community in our country will result in more illness and death, the campaigns statement read. The HIV community knows that Silence = Death; and the Save HIV Funding Campaign along with its members and allies will not be silent while conservative Congressional leaders rob people of their health and lives. The campaign notes that federal HIV programs are cost-effective, with every $1 invested in prevention saving the U.S. health care system $3 to $7 in future treatment costs. Cuts to these programs, the campaign says, would actually increase long-term spending. The Save HIV Funding Campaign recently announced that actor Javier Muoz and RuPauls Drag Race alum Peppermint would join advocates and organizers to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week to urge them to protect and expand funding for HIV/AIDS programs in the U.S. Peppermint and Muoz are scheduled to meet with Congressional offices on Wednesday, while advocates will continue to meet with lawmakers on Thursday and Friday. The three days of lobbying will coincide with the annual U.S. Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA) in Washington, D.C., this week. As both the Blade and The Guardian reported, ahead of the start of USCHA, activists gathered in D.C. to protest the Office of Management and Budgets reported plan to withhold more than half of the $6 billion Congress appropriated for the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) for fiscal year 2025. As the New York Times reported last month, OMB has only apportioned $2.9 billion for the hugely successful program this year, which is the same amount in the administrations 2026 budget proposal. At Tuesdays rally and march organized by Housing Works, Health GAP, and the Treatment Action Group, activists demanded that OMB release the remaining funds before they disappear when the fiscal year ends on September 30.The funding is there. The global health programs that have been shuttered, Congress has funded them but OMB is not permitting it to be spent. They are impounding those funds, Atul Gawande, the former assistant administrator for global health at USAID, said at the rally in front of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, according to The Guardian. That is not legal.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 33 Views 0 önizleme

(@) But regardless of whether picking up Fudd would improve the Wings win/loss ratio, Pazzi stans are dying to see the couple take to the court together again, after a basketball season playing on different teams. One fan mimicked the draft announcers, posting, "With the first pick in the 2026 WNBA draft, the Dallas Wings select..Azzi Fudd, University of Connecticut. APNEWS.COMRubio says US and Mexico will strengthen security collaborationSecretary of State Marco Rubio, left, meets with Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum, right, at the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City, Wednesday, September 3, 2025. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, pool)2025-09-03T14:28:39Z MEXICO CITY (AP) Mexico and the United States on Wednesday agreed during U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubios visit to keep collaborating on cross-border security, including fighting the trafficking of drugs, guns and fuel, but made clear it would be done from their respective sides of the border, respecting each others sovereignty at a time of heightened concerns over U.S. intervention in the region. What had initially been advertised as the signing of a broad security agreement evolved into the possibility of a memorandum of understanding, but in the end was a reaffirmation of the collaboration Mexico and the U.S. have said theyve been doing all along. The priorities remain stopping fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into the U.S., and preventing high-powered guns bought in U.S. gun shops from being smuggled into Mexico, while continuing to control migration, which has fallen dramatically. The new development was the establishment of a high-level implementation group that would be the mechanism for that continued collaboration. This is a high-level group that will meet and coordinate on a regular basis to make sure that all the things we are working on, all the things we have agreed to work on, are happening, are being implemented, Rubio said. Its the closest cooperation weve ever had, maybe between any country, but definitely between the U.S. and Mexico, Rubio said. Mexico Foreign Affairs Secretary Ramn de la Fuente said, Its fundamental to show to U.S. society, Mexican society, that yes, models of cooperation, of collaboration can be built that work, that give results.Rubio spoke after meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday to stress the importance the U.S. places on cooperating with Washington on Western Hemisphere security, trade and migration. Rubio will visit Ecuador on Thursday on his third trip to Latin America since taking office. Sheinbaum has voiced fears of the U.S. encroaching on Mexican sovereignty. Gunboat diplomacyThe meeting came a day after President Donald Trump dramatically stepped up his administrations military role in the Caribbean with what he called a deadly strike on a Venezuelan drug cartel.Trump has alienated many in the region with persistent demands and threats of sweeping tariffs and massive sanctions for refusing to follow his lead, particularly on migration and the fight against drug cartels. Likely to heighten those concerns is the U.S. having deployed warships to the Caribbean and elsewhere off Latin America and announcing a lethal strike on an alleged Tren de Aragua gang vessel carrying narcotics.Rubio continued defending the strike without addressing details, including whether those aboard the boat were warned before being fired upon. The president, under his authority as commander in chief, has a right under exigent circumstances to eliminate imminent threats to the United States, Rubio said. His Mexican counterpart, de la Fuente, emphasized his countrys preference for nonintervention, peaceful solution of conflicts. The U.S. has a complicated legacy of sticking its hand in Latin American affairs, and American military interventions particularly during the Cold War in the region played a major part in destabilizing governments and paving the way for coups in countries like Guatemala and Chile. In recent years, the U.S. has taken a more subtle approach, providing foreign assistance to many countries, including training security forces, but not making direct strikes like what was seen Tuesday in Caribbean waters.Mexicos president pushes back on Trump saying shes not ready to target cartelsTrump has demanded, and so far won, some concessions from Sheinbaums government, which is eager to defuse his tariff threats, although she has fiercely defended Mexicos sovereignty.Sheinbaum again rejected Trumps suggestion that she is afraid of confronting Mexicos cartels because they have so much power. We respect a lot the Mexico-United States relationship, President Trump, and no, its not true this affirmation that he makes, she said.Speaking to reporters Wednesday before meeting with Rubio, she said that what her administration planned to agree to with the United States is a cooperation program about border security and the application of the law within the framework of our (respective) sovereignties. In a State of the Nation address this week marking her first year in office, she said, Under no circumstance will we accept interventions, interference or any other act from abroad that is detrimental to the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the country.Sheinbaum has gone after Mexican drug cartels and their fentanyl production more aggressively than her predecessor. The government has sent the National Guard to the northern border and delivered 55 cartel figures long wanted by U.S. authorities to the Trump administration. Sheinbaum had spoken for some time about how Mexico was finalizing a comprehensive security agreement with the State Department that, among other things, was supposed to include plans for a joint investigation group to combat the flow of fentanyl and the drugs precursors into the U.S. and weapons from north to south.___Associated Press writers Mara Verza in Mexico City and Farnoush Amiri at the United Nations contributed to this report. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMElon Musk says hatred of white males is turning people transgenderAnti-trans billionaire Elon Musk says that he has figured out why trans people exist, and, unsurprisingly, it doesnt explain anything. According to Musk, the major driver of white trans women existing is the relentless propaganda portraying white men as the worst human beings. Related Elon Musks trans daughter slays in drag debut during immigration defense fundraiser If those lies land, especially during vulnerable teen years, and they are given an option to be a celebrated group, some will do it, he claimed. My observation is that a major driver of white males becoming trans is the relentless propaganda portraying white men as the worst human beings. If those lies land, especially during vulnerable teen years, and they are given an option to be a celebrated group, some will do it. Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 2, 2025His theory has a few issues, though. First, he appears to believe that trans women are universally celebrated, at least more than cis men are, which would not explain why anti-trans attitudes are so prevalent. Also, its not clear why trans people who arent white trans women would exist if his theory were true. His theory also contradicts that of another well-known transphobe, J.K. Rowling, who famously wrote an essay where she said that trans men transition in order to escape misogyny. The more of [trans mens] accounts of gender dysphoria Ive read, with their insightful descriptions of anxiety, dissociation, eating disorders, self-harm, and self-hatred, the more Ive wondered whether, if Id been born 30 years later, I too might have tried to transition, Rowling wrote in 2023. The allure of escaping womanhood would have been huge.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 32 Views 0 önizleme

WWW.PRIDE.COMJavier Muoz and Peppermint warn Congress 'we will be back to HIV wards' if funding is cutBefore Congress can cut crucial funding for HIV prevention and treatment, Broadway stars Javier Muoz and Peppermint are making them listen to the people who will be impacted.Muoz, best known for starring as Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton, and Peppermint, runner-up on season nine of RuPauls Drag Race and the first out transgender woman to originate a principal Broadway role in Head Over Heels, met with Democrat and Republican lawmakers alike on Wednesday afternoon to persuade them not to vote for a budget they warned will "eviscerate" government programs dedicated to HIV. For Muoz, an out gay man who has been living with HIV for over 20 years, it could be a matter of life or death. "This is not something that is outside of my existence or my life. This is my life, this is my health, this is my future," Muoz tells The Advocate. "This is my ability to actually maintain breathing and living and access to my treatment on a daily basis."The House Appropriations Committee recently released its FY26 funding bill, which would cut HIV treatment and prevention by $1.7 billion cuts much steeper than even those initially proposed by Donald Trump. This would revoke over $1 billion through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including $220 million from the president's Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative. The proposed budget would slash the budget for the Ryan White CARE Act by 20 percent ($525 million), ending grants to over 400 clinics that provide care. It would also threaten the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the global program started by Republican President George W. Bush in 2003 which has saved an estimated 26 million lives; Medicaid, which provides health insurance for 40 percent of Americans living with HIV; and access to prevention drugs such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP.This would destroy "any advancement, things that are on the horizon, things that might put us towards closer and closer towards ending this virus," as Muoz describes it; advancements such as combination therapies, one-pill-a-day treatments, and "the fact that I have no side effects with my medication.""They will put us back to where we started. We will be back to HIV wards AIDS wards in hospitals," Muoz says. "We will be dwindled down. We will watch our loved ones die again, and it is completely needless. We are in the position to do more and better, and it's inexcusable to even have these cuts on the table."The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate have not yet voted on the cuts, but must do so before the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. Until that happens, Peppermint is urging others to "take advantage of these services while you have them" by utilizing the clinics near them and "routinely getting checked" for STDs. "After nearly 30 years living in New York City, I've really been proud of the things I've been able to do, and that is in huge part thanks to my being able to identify as a trans woman and have matching documents, matching paperwork, matching IDs, and then also the healthcare that I was able to utilize," Peppermint says. "The healthcare services that I was able to utilize in times when I was flying high on a TV show or on Broadway, but also times when I was in between jobs and wasn't able to work."Those who wish to speak directly to the budget cuts should "reach out to local politicians," Muoz advises, as he says "the only way we're going to really apply pressure is to say to these elected officials who are going to vote for these cuts, 'We will vote you out.'"Both actors are aware of the significance their meetings hold as they represent LGBTQ+ people at a turning point for the community. They hope their personal experiences can sway the hearts of some lawmakers, as Peppermint notes "they might not always have the opportunity to connect with their constituents in this way." For Muoz, the opportunity forces politicians to confront the reality of what they're doing. "Look at me dead in the eye and tell me I don't deserve to live," Muoz says. "Tell me that right now, because I am exactly the person who's going to be directly affected by these cuts."0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 33 Views 0 önizleme

GAYETY.COMColman Domingo Talks Portraying Joe Jackson in Upcoming Michael Jackson Biopic: The Jacksons Are a Profound FamilyAs the Venice Film Festival brought international stars to the Italian coast, Colman Domingo stood center stage, not only as the host of the prestigious amfAR benefit gala but also as a leading figure in one of the most anticipated and debated films in production: Michael, the official biopic of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The Oscar-nominated actor, 55, will portray Joe Jackson, the Jackson family patriarch, in the upcoming Lionsgate film. Domingo opened up about the role while speaking to PEOPLE on Sunday, August 31, at the amfAR event, where he shared insights into his approach to playing one of musics most controversial father figures, and revealed that he has the full support of Michael Jacksons children, Paris and Prince Jackson.Paris and Prince Jackson Show Their SupportTheyre very much in support of our film, Domingo said of the pop icons children. Im excited to be here at amfAR tonight with Paris. It feels like thats a nice way for us to be together.Paris Jackson, 27, not only attended the event, held annually to raise funds for HIV/AIDS research and awareness, but also performed as one of the evenings musical guests, alongside pop star Ava Max. Prince Jackson, 28, has been involved with the film from behind the scenes, with Domingo calling him a man of the film.He described Paris as lovely and noted how meaningful it is to have both siblings in his corner as he prepares to take on a character as layered and complicated as Joe Jackson.Honoring the Whole Jackson LegacyWhile Michael focuses on the life and career of its titular figure, portrayed by Michaels real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, Domingo emphasized that the film is also about the family that helped shape one of the most iconic entertainers in history. The thing that has inspired me the most is this very profound and prominent family called the Jacksons, Domingo told PEOPLE. We would not have any of this music that we used to have great memories about the moments, the big moments that we all share without the Jackson family. And Im not just saying just Michael the entire Jackson family. That emphasis on family is what initially drew Domingo to the project. Though Joe Jackson has long been the subject of controversy for his strict parenting style and often harsh discipline, Domingo says his intention is not to paint a black-and-white portrait, but to unearth the complexity of a man who helped launch a global musical dynasty.Finding the Humanity in Joe JacksonDomingo is no stranger to tackling real-life figures on screen. He recently portrayed civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in Netflixs Rustin, a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination. For Michael, hes applying the same level of care, depth, and research.Right now I seem to be on the track of interrogating some of these real-life human beings, Domingo previously told PEOPLE in early 2024. I want to find their humanity, I want to find their heart and their humor. It may go against public opinion sometimes, but I think thats my responsibility to find the complex version of these people.Joe Jackson, who passed away in 2018, was infamously written out of Michael Jacksons will and remained estranged from his son at the time of his death. However, Domingo said his portrayal will not seek to excuse or vilify, but rather to explore. Were going to look at Joe through a nuanced lens, he shared. He was part of the machine that built the Jackson brand, and also part of the cost.A Night of Celebration and PurposeThe amfAR benefit gala where Domingo spoke was a glamorous yet heartfelt affair, raising more than $3.4 million for HIV/AIDS research. The evening honored artist Julian Schnabel with the Award of Inspiration, presented by Jude Law, and featured an international guest list of filmmakers, celebrities, and activists. For Domingo, who is openly gay and a longtime advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, the night was personal as well as professional. Hosting an event that champions health equity while preparing to star in a film that probes generational trauma and fame feels like a full-circle moment for the actor. What to Expect from MichaelDirected by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Emancipation) and produced by Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King, Michael is billed as a comprehensive look at the artists life, from childhood stardom to global superstardom, and the controversies that followed. The film, originally slated for a 2025 release, has reportedly undergone reshoots that could push its debut to 2026. Lionsgate has yet to confirm an updated release date, but anticipation, and scrutiny, remain high.Still, with Domingos thoughtful approach, support from the Jackson family, and a cast that includes members of Michaels own lineage, Michael is shaping up to be a deeply personal, multi-dimensional portrait of a pop culture giant. For Domingo, its an opportunity to help humanize a legacy that has long been mythologized. We get into a lot of things, he teased earlier this year. And I think audiences are ready for it.Source0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 32 Views 0 önizleme
