More than pageantry, Chinas military parade shows off new missiles, drones and other equipment
In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, drones and other armament formations pass during the military parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II held in front of Tiananmen Gate in Beijing, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025. (Liu Xu/Xinhua via AP)2025-09-03T11:27:23Z BANGKOK (AP) Soldiers in pristine and pressed uniforms marched in lockstep, their boots clacking a steady cadence on the pavement and their eyes following leader Xi Jinping as he drove by in review. Helicopters flew overhead, forming the numbers 8 and 0 in honor of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. There was no shortage of pageantry at Wednesdays military parade in Beijing, but beyond the spectacle, it also provided the first good look at Chinas latest military hardware. New missiles, drones and other high-tech equipment have been added to its arsenal as part of a massive modernization program with the goal, according to the official parade announcers, of producing a force with both nuclear and conventional capabilities able to deter wars in all battle spaces. Here are some of the highlights: New nukesChinas nuclear arsenal still lags far behind that of the United States and Russia, but it has been rapidly expanding. In its annual report to Congress on China, the U.S. Department of Defense estimated that Beijing now has more than 600 warheads and will have more than 1,000 by 2030. The parade featured many of the missiles capable of delivering those warheads, from air, sea and land. Chinas official Xinhua News Agency said it was the first time the militarys triad of strategic nuclear forces was presented in a concentrated fashion, calling it Chinas strategic trump card for safeguarding national sovereignty and defending national dignity. The display of the three systems together is noteworthy, said Meia Nouwens, senior fellow for Chinese security and defense policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Stay up to date with similar stories by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. All of that, of course, goes back to this key point about deterrence and the messaging that the PLA (Peoples Liberation Army) and Xi Jinping are seeking to send to the U.S. and other partners and allies in the region and further afield, she said. Among the nuclear-capable missiles seen was the DF-61, a new intercontinental ballistic missile which can be fired from a mobile launching platform. Details on its capabilities are scant, but its predecessor has a range of more than 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) and can carry multiple warheads. It also debuted the newest variant of the silo-based DF-5, the DF-5C, whose range has been estimated at 20,000 kilometers. Also featured were the JL-1 air-launched long-range missile and the JL-3 sea-launched missile, both of which are also nuclear-capable. More missilesThe parade saw the debut of other new missiles, including several designed to attack ships. These are likely of particular interest to the U.S., whose naval power is a key component of its Asia-Pacific defense strategy.China claims the self-governing democracy of Taiwan as its own, and Xi has not ruled out taking the island by force. In the event of a Chinese invasion, if the U.S. were to come to Taiwans aid, China would need to hold off the U.S. Navy long enough to consolidate control of the island. China has already built the worlds largest navy, though it is still well behind the U.S. in the number of aircraft carriers it has. It could use missiles, however, to try to keep American carriers out of effective range. The parade showcased for the first time the YJ-15, YJ-17, YJ-19 and YJ-20 anti-ship missiles, all capable of operating at long ranges and hypersonic, making them difficult to intercept. It also displayed missiles meant to intercept incoming anti-ship missiles, including the HQ-16C and HQ10A, and presented the aircraft-carrier version of the J-35 stealth multirole fighter for the first time. These are capabilities that are increasingly meant to signal to the United States they should think twice about entering into a conflict, if there ever is one, in support of Taiwan, Nouwens said. Drones from above, drones from belowSeven types of reconnaissance and attack aerial drones were on display that were not immediately identified by official commentators, but some of which appeared to be new. A small surface drone ship was also on display but not identified, as well as carrier-based uncrewed helicopters. China also showed off two submarine drones, the older-model HSU001 and debuting the much larger AJX002. Chinas official Xinhua News Agency called them cutting-edge surprise weapons for naval combat designed for covert deployment and blockade, autonomous detection and identification, and swarm-networked attacks.Long gone are the days where China was reliant on Russia or other foreign systems, wrote Mick Ryan, a retired Australian army major general and analyst at the Lowy Institute, in a research note on the drones and other systems on display. This level of indigenous capacity infers high levels of sustainability in any future conflict.Still, he cautioned, newer does not always mean better. While most Western military equipment has been tested in Iraq, Ukraine and elsewhere, none of Chinas new kit has. DAVID RISING Rising covers regional Asia-Pacific stories for The Associated Press. GOP senator rages at outgoing gay CDC vaccine leader for talking about his lifestyle
Anti-LGBTQ+ Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said on Tuesday that Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, a gay vaccine expert who recently resigned from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), was too sexual to work for the government. Daskalakis resigned as the head of the CDCs Immunization and Respiratory Diseases division last Wednesday afternoon, accusing the current presidential administration of distorting scientific data at the risk of public health. He should have never had a position in government, Rand recently told reporters. He brags about his lifestyle, you know, this whole idea of bondage and, you know, multiple partners and all that stuff. He brags about that stuff, but hes got no business being in government. Its good riddance. Related Its long past time to acknowledge there are no good Republican politicians Rand says he admires the current president, who has publicly bragged about his penis size, fathered five children from three different women, and been accused of sexual misconduct by at least 28 women. Nevertheless, Rand criticized therisky behavior that [Daskalakis] and his lifestyle involve, ignoring the steps Daskalakis takes to reduce risk, which include vaccines.Rand also called Daskalakis a guy that is so far out of the mainstream, adding, I think most people in America would discount his opinion because of the things he said in the past. He does not represent the mainstream of anything in America. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Despite Rands claims, an estimated 20% to 46.8% of adults participate in kink. Additionally, anestimated 4% to 5%of people living in the United States participate in some form of consensual non-monogamy, andan estimated 20% have at least attempted some kind of consensual non-monogamy at some point.Non-monogamous people may hide their actions for fear of discrimination or harassment. Rands comment illustrates the sort of workplace harassment and stigmatization faced by non-monogamous people. Rand made his comments while criticizing Daskalakiss advisement that infants be vaccinated against Hepatitis B, a blood-borne infection that can thrive outside the body for a week. The infection, if contracted during infancy, has a 90% chance of becoming a chronic, lifelong condition that can lead to fatal liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.Rand has made transphobic comments and campaign ads and suggested that Christian clerks may have the legal right to deny marriage licenses to LGBTQ+ people.Rands isnt the only one making anti-gay comments about Daskalakis. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) called him a BDSM Satan worshipper on CNN last Sunday. Daskalakis has a large tattoo of Jesus Christ on his torso, an emblem of his Greek Orthodox Christian upbringing. He has also explicitly said that he is not a Satanist, joking, I wish I were that interesting.Demetre Daskalakis | CDC portrait Daskalakis, a 51-year-old medical professional, helped lead aggressive outreach to the LGBTQ+ community during the COVID-19 and MPOX epidemics. He served as director of the CDCs Division of HIV and AIDS Prevention under President Joe Biden.Hes also been a target of the far-right for his public embrace of the gay community and photos showing his tattoos and leather gear. Public health is not merely about the health of the individual, Daskalakis wrote in his resignation letter, but it is about the health of the community, the nation, the world. The nations health security is at risk and is in the hands of people focusing on ideological self-interest.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Now more than ever: Community is what sustains us
Like the organization Im proud to lead, the movement for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion was born in an era of profound challenge. In the 1990s, the concept of comprehensive protections for LGBTQ+ people seemed distant, and the legal and political climate was grim. Yet even then, something powerful was underway. Employers began recognizing the strength that comes from building a sense of belonging. In times of adversity, weve always drawn on our collective strength. Together, we imagined and implemented changes long before the law offered us protections. Major employers led the way, creating nondiscrimination policies, LGBTQ+-inclusive benefits, and equitable practices that strengthened both their businesses and the communities around them. Lydia B. Kollins spills on her 'Drag Race' career & why she loves touring with Kori King
Did someone say her name three times?Lydia B. Kollins is undeniably one of the breakout stars from RuPaul's Drag Race this year. After coming in 7th place on season 17, the beloved queen nearly snatched the crown on All Stars 10 by tying Bosco for 3rd/4th place."My dreams came true! • New Short Documentary Highlights Hawaiian Moms Journey to Accepting & Championing her Transgender Child
The Learn with Love episode created by The Trevor Project demonstrates the power of supportive parentsSeptember 3, 2025 Today, The Trevor Project launched a new short film, Learn with Love: Haylin and Mat. This short film is the latest episode of the Learn with Love series, a collection of real stories of LGBTQ+ young people and their families, meant to raise public awareness, understanding, and, ultimately, help end suicide among LGBTQ+ youth. The new short film tells the story of a mother and son living in Honolulu, Hawaii: Haylin, a marriage and family therapist, and Mat, her 17-year-old son who is transgender. Raised in a conservative, religious household, Haylin shares her journey toward accepting, understanding, and supporting her transgender child including opening her own nonprofit, mental health clinic, Spill the Tea Cafe, to connect young people of all identities with welcoming, supportive mental health services in an underserved community.Every young person deserves to grow up in a community that supports and accepts them. Yet, for LGBTQ+ young people, and transgender youth in particular, this is too often not their experience, said Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project. As we continue to witness widespread misinformation and stereotypes about transgender young people in the U.S., we must pay better attention to real stories from real transgender youth. I am beyond grateful to Haylin and Mat for sharing their powerful story and showing audiences everywhere that even if a parent doesnt understand everything about their child, they can still love and support them unconditionally. When LGBTQ+ youth, like Mat, have supportive parents, their odds of suicide risk lower significantly. And their ability to thrive? That skyrockets. This new short film is part of a three-year public awareness campaign an ongoing, targeted multimedia effort that aims to spread awareness of the issue of suicide among LGBTQ+ young people, connect youth in crisis with the care they need, and equip audiences with tools and trainings to address the public health crisis.LGBTQ+ young people are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide than their peers. The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ+ young people (ages 13-24) seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S., and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds. Data show that LGBTQ+ young people living in rural areas reported significantly higher rates of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts and lower rates of access to mental health care compared to their peers who live in non-rural areas.Thirty-two percent of LGBTQ+ youth in Hawaii seriously considered suicide in the past year. More than half (57%) of LGBTQ+ young people in the state said they wanted mental health care in the past year, but were not able to receive it. Only 26% of LGBTQ+ young people in Hawaii reported that their home was an affirming environment, and for transgender and nonbinary young people in particular, that figure dropped to 17%.If you or someone you know needs help or support, The Trevor Projects trained crisis counselors are available 24/7 at 1-866-488-7386, via chat at TheTrevorProject.org/Get-Help, or by texting START to 678678.The post New Short Documentary Highlights Hawaiian Moms Journey to Accepting & Championing her Transgender Child appeared first on The Trevor Project.

New Kid Easily Wins Over Classroom With Belly Tricks
CRYSTAL LAKE, ILWith a crowd gathering around the new kid as word of his charming antics quickly spread among his peers, witnesses confirmed Tuesday that local fourth grader Billy Donaldson had easily won over his new classmates by performing belly tricks.Look, the new kid is making his belly really big like a balloon! said Katie Henderson, who, along with the 23 other students in Donaldsons class at McHenry Elementary School, reported the 9-year-old stranger had almost immediately endeared himself to them by enthusiastically slapping his inflated stomach as if it were a conga drum. When the teacher asked him to introduce himself, he just stood up from his chair, lifted his Minecraft T-shirt, and made his belly roll over and over. We all started cheering when he folded it in half and made it talk to Ms. Peterson. If he can really make his belly loudly slosh around after drinking a lot of milk like he says, he will rule this school.According to sources, Donaldsons popularity at his new school continued to skyrocket after he was observed flicking his cheek to make a water drop sound. The post New Kid Easily Wins Over Classroom With Belly Tricks appeared first on The Onion.

US media quickly forced to revisit a thorny question: How should a presidents health be covered?
FOX News reporter Peter Doocy shows President Donald Trump a photo on his phone during an event about the relocation of U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama in the Oval Office of the White House, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)2025-09-03T04:01:16Z Early in Donald Trumps news conference Tuesday, Fox News Peter Doocy asked a question that surely baffled people who avoided social media for Labor Day.How did you find out over the weekend that you were dead? Doocy said to the president.Doocy was referring to speculation about Trumps health that spread online during the long Labor Day weekend, fueled in part by the presidents relative absence from the public for several days. The incident has renewed for a different president questions about how journalists should handle the sensitive issue of how healthy an aging leader of the free world actually is.Trump said he was more active than had been apparent publicly and criticized the media. Its fake news its so fake, he said. Thats why the media has so little credibility. Its a familiar issue with the news media and two aging presidentsA year ago, President Joe Biden, now 82, abandoned his reelection effort after a halting, confused performance in a debate with Trump provoked concerns about his ability to serve another four-year term. Journalists who covered the White House faced attacks for not doing enough to investigate Bidens health and condition.Trump, who turned 79 in June, is the oldest person to be inaugurated as president. Pictures showing him with bruises on his hands and apparent swelling in his legs circulated online recently, as did clips of misstatements in public, such as mistakenly referring to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last month as Kristi. None of these is evidence of serious illness. The White House has said Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, which means veins in the legs cant properly carry blood back to the heart, causing it to pool in the lower legs. Its a fairly common condition for older adults. As far as the bruising, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said its from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which Trump takes regularly to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Easy bruising in general could have several relatively benign causes, including old age or side effects from medications like blood thinners. Besides creating spikes in online activity through sites like X, Facebook and TikTok, stories speculating about Trumps health appeared in outlets like The Hill, the New York Post, People, Rolling Stone, Raw Story and Breitbart in recent days, according to NewsWhip. But outlets like The New York Times, The Associated Press, MSNBC and Fox News Channel did not write about it or discuss it, at least prior to the issue being brought up at Trumps news conference. Trump is dead was trending on social mediaOn CNN Tuesday morning, anchor Audie Cornish had a short discussion about the topic. At one point the term Trump is dead was trending on social media, Cornish said. Not true. She noted one of Trumps social media posts from Labor Day, when he wrote, NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE.On the conservative outlet Newsmax, anchor Rick Leventhal read a series of social media messages about the issue. The left did not hesitate to take to social media sending ill will the presidents way, he said. After Trumps 50-minute Oval Office appearance, televised in full on Fox News, network anchor Martha MacCallum laughed at a reference to the issue. Biden was missing in action for days or weeks, she said.Trump sought to make his predecessors condition an issue both before and after voters returned him to the presidency. In June, Trump ordered an investigation into Bidens use of the autopen for presidential signatures and whether his aides purposely shielded the public from evidence of Bidens physical and mental decline. In part because of that, former NBC Meet the Press anchor Chuck Todd said in a podcast Tuesday that Trump and his team had only themselves to blame for the way the presidents health became an issue. I do think theyre susceptible to a feeding frenzy, he said.Beyond punditry, however, news outlets face serious questions about how to handle the story, much like they did with Biden. The physical signs that have been pointed out online should trigger serious probes into the presidents health. Some critics, like historian Garrett Graff, said it was puzzling that many in the media hadnt treated it like a news story although the timing over a holiday weekend surely made it more challenging. What is fair game for news media to cover?Evidence-based assessments of a presidents health are absolutely fair game, said Bill Grueskin, a Columbia University journalism professor. That could include observations like the presidents bruising or falling asleep at meetings, and analyses of what drugs the president is taking and why.Similarly, radio silence from a prominent office holder, especially one who appears on media frequently, is a valuable thing for journalists to report, Grueskin said. I dont think that news organizations need to publish those everyone is talking about XYZ on social media, so we need to repeat it stories. The issue of press coverage of Bidens health was widely discussed last year, and renewed again this spring with the publication of Original Sin: President Bidens Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again by journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson.Given all that, Graff wrote in a Substack post that youd think reporters would be falling all over themselves to dig deeper right now. Clearly, theres enough smoke to warrant at least a major story in a major outlet investigating whether there is fire.___David Bauder writes about the intersection of media and entertainment for the AP. Dozens of bodies recovered from village hit by landslide in Darfur as pope prays for victims
In this Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, photo provided by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, people gather at the site of a landslide from Aug. 31, that wiped out the village of Tarasin in the Marrah Mountains of Central Darfur, Sudan. (Sudan Liberation Movement/Army via AP)2025-09-03T12:49:45Z CAIRO (AP) Search teams have recovered around 100 bodies from a remote village that is feared to have been wiped out by a devastating landslide over the weekend in Sudans western region of Darfur, a rebel group said Wednesday. The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army has said the death toll from the Aug. 31 landslide in Tarasin, in the Marrah Mountains, could be as high as 1,000.Mohamed Abdel-Rahman al-Nair, a spokesman for the group, told The Associated Press that about 100 bodies were recovered on Tuesday. He said search efforts were underway amid lack of resources and equipment.Pope Leo XIV has called for a coordinated response to stop this humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, said that the death toll and the full scale of the tragedy have yet to be confirmed due to the scene being extremely hard to reach. The U.N. has said that between 300-1,000 people may have lost their lives in the landslide and that efforts were mobilized to support the impacted area, located more than 900 kilometers (560 miles) west of the capital, Khartoum. Pope Leo XIV spoke of the tragedy during his weekly address on Wednesday, saying it has left behind pain and despair. He called for a coordinated response to stop this humanitarian catastrophe, and initiate a serious, sincere, and inclusive dialogue between the parties to end the conflict and restore hope, dignity, and peace to the people of Sudan. The Marrah Mountains region is a volcanic area with a height of more than 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) at its summit. The mountain chain is a world heritage site, and is known for its lower temperature and higher rainfall than its surroundings, according to UNICEF.A small-scale landslide hit the area in 2018, killing at least 19 people dead and injuring dozens others, according to the now-disbanded United Nations-African Union mission in Darfur. Sundays tragedy was the latest to slum Sudan amid its devastating civil war. The country has been hit by famine and disease outbreaks, including cholera, which killed hundreds of people this year. The war began in April 2023 when boiling tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into open fighting in Khartoum and elsewhere in the country. The conflict killed tens of thousands of people, and created the worlds largest humanitarian crisis. More than 14 million people have been displaced and parts of the country slipped into famine. The war has been marked by atrocities including mass killings and rape, which the International Criminal Court is investigating as war crimes and crimes against humanity._____Associated Press journalist in Rome Trisha Thomas contributed. Quick-moving wildfire scorches historic California gold mining town, burning multiple homes
A firefighter battles the 6-5 Fire burning through the Chinese Camp community of Tuolumne County, Calif., on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025. (AP Photo/Noah Berger)2025-09-03T05:12:25Z TUOLUMNE COUNTY, Calif. (AP) A quick-moving wildfire burned homes in a California Gold Rush town settled around 1850 by Chinese miners who were driven out of a nearby camp and the blaze grew without containment on Wednesday. The fire rapidly expanded to 10 square miles (26 square kilometers) in size, forcing the evacuation Tuesday of the Chinese Camp Town and surrounding highways, according to CalFire, the states chief fire agency. There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths. It is one of several fires called the TCU September Lighting Complex, which has burned more than 19 square miles (50 square kilometers) in multiple locations in Calaveras and Tuolumne counties as of early Wednesday with no containment. At least five homes were burning in the rural town, which has a mix of freestanding and mobile homes.Outside one house on Tuesday evening, seven people quickly moved large tree branches away from the structure and shoveled sand onto the fire in a desperate attempt to keep the blaze from spreading from the house next door. They worked for about 30 minutes until firefighters arrived. An RV on the property was damaged by the fire. Fire officials have requested additional resources such as fire engines, dozers and an aircraft. The blaze, known as the 6-5 Fire, was caused by lightning, according to CalFire. It is one of more than a dozen blazes that erupted Tuesday across California, according to CalFire. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. Thousands of Chinese came to California during the Gold Rush and faced persecution that included an exorbitant Foreign Miners Tax designed to drive them away from mining. Chinese Camp Town, about 57 miles (92 kilometers) east of Stockton, was settled by Chinese miners after they were driven out of a nearby camp, according to Visit Tuolumne County. Originally called Camp Washington, its name was soon changed to reflect the thousands of people from China who settled there. RSShttps://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Wall Street steadies itself as Alphabet pulls tech stocks higher
Trader Patrick Casey works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Monday, Aug. 18, 2025. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)2025-09-03T03:30:01Z NEW YORK (AP) Wall Street is steadying on Wednesday as Alphabet and other technology stocks rise. The S&P 500 added 0.5% and was on track to break its two-day losing streak since setting its latest all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was edging down by 3 points, or less than 0.1%, as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.8% higher. Googles parent company climbed 7.1% and was one of the strongest forces lifting the market after avoiding some of the worst-case scenarios in its antitrust case. A federal judge on Tuesday ordered a shake-up of Googles search engine but did not force a sale of its Chrome browser, for example. Because Alphabet is one of Wall Streets most valuable companies, its stock movements carry more weight on the S&P 500 and other indexes than the typical companys. Also helping to steady Wall Street was a calming bond market. A day earlier, rising yields for government bonds around the world raised the pressure on the stock market. Yields climbed on worries about governments abilities to repay their growing mountains of debt, as well as concerns that President Donald Trumps pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut short-term interest rates could lead to higher inflation in the long term. Such worries have pushed investors to demand higher yields in order to lend money to governments worldwide. And when bonds are paying more in interest, investors are less likely to pay high prices for stocks, which are riskier investments. On Wednesday, Treasury yields slowed their ascent. The 10-year Treasury yield dipped to 4.26% from 4.28% late Tuesday, for example. Trading on Wall Street was mixed outside of tech stocks, which benefited from the Alphabet ruling. Apple rose 2.6%, as analysts said the ruling will still allow it to sign lucrative search deals with Google.Macys jumped 19.6% for one of the markets bigger gains after the retailer reported stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The owner of Bloomingdales delivered the best growth in an important measure of sales in three years, and it also raised its forecasts for sales and profit this fiscal year. On the losing end of Wall Street was Dollar Tree, even though the retailer reported better profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. A chunk of its stronger-than-expected performance came because of the timing of tariffs, which could drag down its results in the current quarter. Analysts also said expectations were high for the value retailer coming into its report. Its stock fell 9.7%, slicing into its gain for the year that came into the day at a stellar 48.6%. In stock markets abroad, European indexes ticked higher following a weaker finish across much of Asia.Japans Nikkei 225 fell 0.9% amid uncertainty about the political future of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. ___AP Business Writer Yuri Kageyama contributed. Novak Djokovic is 38 and bidding for a 25th Slam title. He faces Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open
Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, returns a shot against Taylor Fritz, of the United States, during the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open tennis championships, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, in New York. (AP Photo/Adam Hunger)2025-09-03T13:17:50Z NEW YORK (AP) Novak Djokovic is 38 and trying to conquer a younger mans game as he heads into the U.S. Open semifinals on Friday. Its been two years since his most recent Grand Slam title, which to him must feel like an eternity.Last season was his first without earning at least one since 2017. And Djokovic is clear that, at this point in his career, those big trophies from the sports four biggest events are all he really cares about. At this years three other major tournaments, he exited in the semifinals, two after getting hurt: quitting at the Australian Open because of a torn hamstring and clearly limited at Wimbledon by an injured groin muscle. He hadnt competed anywhere since leaving the All England Club in July until arriving at Flushing Meadows. Novak Djokovic faces Carlos Alcaraz next, possibly Jannik Sinner after thatNow Djokovic is back in the final four in New York, and theres a daunting road ahead. Next up is No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who is 22. Win that, and a final on Sunday against No. 1 Jannik Sinner, 23, could await, if the defending champion beats Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals and whoever his semifinal opponent is. After reaching a 53rd major semifinal, and 14th at the U.S. Open, by eliminating No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz, 27, in four sets Tuesday night, Djokovic fiddled with his beard while pondering whats to come.Well, its not going to get easier, Ill tell you that, he said with a wry smile. Im going to try to take one day at a time. Really take care of my body. Try to relax and recover. The next couple of days is really key for me to really get my body in shape and ready to battle five sets, if its needed. I just would really love that. Djokovic has been to 37 Slam finals and won 24 but none at age 38Djokovic already owns nearly every record of any significance in mens tennis, including 24 major championships, 37 major final appearances and the most weeks at No. 1 in the rankings. And so on.Whats new for him is adjusting to contending at this age. Normally I like to play the big matches on a big stage. Its just that Im not really sure how the body is going to feel in the next few days. But Im going to do my very best with my team to be fit for that, Djokovic said. Theres going to be a lot of running involved, thats for sure. Its not going to be short points.Djokovic is 5-3 against US Open semifinal opponent AlcarazHe owns a 5-3 head-to-head mark against Alcaraz, who has won five Slam titles already and combined with Sinner to claim the last seven and nine of the past 12.Not to be forgotten: The other three in that span went to Djokovic, most recently at the 2023 U.S. Open.I have another chance, another shot. Hopefully ... I can be fit enough and play well enough to keep up with Carlos, Djokovic said. Then it can be anybodys match.Djokovic won the two most recent meetings against the dynamic Alcaraz in the Australian Open quarterfinals this January and in the gold-medal final at the Paris Olympics last year.I really want revenge, Alcaraz said. Thats obvious. Alcaraz reached the final at his past 7 tournaments, winning 5 titlesAlcaraz has been preposterously dominant over the past 1 1/2 weeks, not dropping a set in the tournament, and for much of 2025, leading the tour with six titles and a 59-6 record. Since April, he is 43-2, winning tournaments at Monte-Carlo, Rome, Roland-Garros, Queens Club and Cincinnati. The two losses came in finals at Barcelona (against Holger Rune) and Wimbledon (against Sinner).Djokovic knows what Alcaraz and Sinner have done lately. We dont need to spend words about the two of them. We know that they are two best players in the world, said Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semifinals of the French Open and Wimbledon. Everybody is probably expecting and anticipating (a U.S. Open final) between the two of them. Im going to try to mess up the plans of most of the people. And then Djokovic added: I definitely am not going with a white flag on the court.___Howard Fendrich has been the APs tennis writer since 2002. Shein Used Luigi Mangiones AI-Generated Face to Sell a Shirt
A listing on ultra-fast-fashion e-commerce site Shein used an AI-generated image of Luigi Mangione to sell a floral button-down t-shirt.Mangionethe prime suspect in the December 2024 murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompsonis being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, last I checked, and is not modeling for Shein.I first saw the Mangione Shein listing on the culture and news X account Popcrave, which posted the listing late Tuesday evening.Sheins website appears to use Luigi Mangiones face to model a spring/summer shirt. pic.twitter.com/UPXW8fEPPq Pop Crave (@PopCrave) September 3, 2025Shein removed the listing on Wednesday, but someone saved it on the Internet Archive before Shein took it down. "The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery," Shein told Newsweek in a statement. "We have stringent standards for all listings on our platform. We are conducting a thorough investigation, strengthening our monitoring processes, and will take appropriate action against the vendor in line with our policies." Shein did not immediately reply to 404 Medias request for comment. The item, sold by the third-party brand Manfinity, had the description Men's New Spring/Summer Short Sleeve Blue Ditsy Floral White Shirt, Pastoral Style Gentleman Shirt For Everyday Wear, Family Matching Mommy And Me (3 Pieces Are Sold Separately). The Manfinity brand makes a lot of Shein stuff using AI-generated models, like these gym bros selling PUSH HARDER t-shirts and gym sweats and this very tough guy wearing a NAH, IM GOOD tee. AI-generated models are all over Shein, and seems especially popular with listings featuring babies and toddlers. AI models in fashion are becoming more mainstream; in July, Vogue ran advertisements for Guess featuring AI-generated women selling the brands summer collection.Last year, artists sued Shein, alleging the Chinese e-commerce giant scraped the internet using AI and stole their designs, and its been well-documented that fast fashion sites use bots to identify popular themes and memes from social media to put them on their own listings. Mangione merch and anything related to the caseincluding remixes of the United Healthcare logo and the Deny, Defend, Depose line allegedly found on the bulletwent wild in the weeks following Thompsons murder; Manfinity might have generated what seemed popular on social media (Mangiones smiling face) and automatically put it on a shirt listing. Based on the archived listing, it worked: A lot of people managed to grab a limited edition Shein Luigi Ditsy Floral before it was removed: According to the archived version of the listing, it was sold out of all sizes except for XXL.

They Were Some of Earths Last Stable Glaciers. Now, Theyre Melting.
Subscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week. Scientists have long been puzzled by the sturdy glaciers of the mountains of central Asia, which have inexplicably remained intact even as other glaciers around the world rapidly recede due to human-driven climate change. This mysterious resilience may be coming to an end, however. The glaciers in this mountainous regionnicknamed the Third Pole because it boasts more ice than any place outside of the Arctic and Antarctic polar caps have passed a tipping point that could set them on a path to accelerated mass loss, according to a new study. The end of this unusual glacial resilience, known as the Pamir-Karakoram Anomaly, would have major implications for the people who rely on the glaciers for water.Scientists suggested that a recent decline in snowfall to the region is behind the shift, but it will take much more research to untangle the complicated dynamics of these remote and under-studied glaciers, according to a study published on Tuesday in Communications Earth & Environment. We have known about this anomaly since the early 2000s, said study co-author Francesca Pellicciotti, a professor at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), in a call with 404 Media. In the last 25 years, remote-sensing has really revolutionized Earth sciences in general, and also cryospheric sciences. There is no definite answer yet for why those glaciers were quite stable, said Achille Jouberton, a PhD student at ISTA who led the study, in the same call. On average, at the regional scale, they were doing quite well in the last decadeuntil recently, which is what our study is showing. This space-down view of the worlds glaciers initially revealed the resilience of ice and snowpack in the Pamir-Karakoram region, but that picture started to change around 2018. Many of these glaciers have remained inaccessible to scientists due to political instabilities and other factors, leaving a multi-decade gap in the research about their curious strength. To get a closer look, Jouberton and his colleagues established a site for monitoring snowfall, precipitation, and water resources at Kyzylsu Glacier in central Tajikistan in 2021. In addition to this fieldwork, the team developed sophisticated models to reconstruct changes within this catchment since 1999.While the glaciers still look robust from the outside, the results revealed that snowfall has decreased and ice melt has increased. These interlinked trends have become more pronounced over the past seven years and were corroborated by conversations with locals. The decline in precipitation has made the glacier vulnerable to summer melting, as there is less snowpack to protect it from the heat.It will take a while before these glaciers start looking wasted, like the glaciers of the Alps, or North America, or South America, said Pellicciotti. While the team pinpointed a lack of snowfall as a key driver of the shift, its unclear why the region is experiencing reduced precipitation. The researchers are also unsure if a permanent threshold has been crossed, or if these changes could be chalked up to natural variation. They hope that the study, which is the first to warn of this possible tipping point, will inspire climate scientists, atmospheric scientists, and other interdisciplinary researchers to weigh in on future work.We don't know if this is just an inflection in the natural cycle, or if it's really the beginning of a trend that will go on for many years, said Pellicciotti. So we need to expand these findings, and extend them to a much longer period in the past and in the future.Resolving these uncertainties will be critical for communities in this region that rely on healthy snowpack and ice cover for their water supply. It also hints that even the last stalwart glacial holdouts on Earth are vulnerable to climate change. The major rivers are fed by snow and glacier melts, which are the dominant source of water in the summer months, which makes the glaciers very important, concluded Jouberton. "Theres a large amount of people living downstream in all of the Central Asian countries that are really direct beneficiaries of those water and meltwater from the glaciers.Subscribe to 404 Media to get The Abstract, our newsletter about the most exciting and mind-boggling science news and studies of the week.

Caitlyn Jenner blames the DEIs & gender ideology for school shooting in confused rant
Olympic athlete and reality television personality Caitlyn Jenner claimed that the Minnesota school shooter was not actually transgender but a product of the DEIs and gender ideology and said that the solution to school shootings is to stop talking about trans people.Jenner, who is currently a Fox News contributor after her failed run for California governor, was on Trace Gallaghers Fox News show to talk about last weeks shooting at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where two children were killed and seventeen other people were injured. The shooter then killed themself. Related Rightwing pundit celebrates an unbelievable victory in wake of Minnesota shooting The sole suspect in the shooting, Robin Westman, applied for a name change at age 17, and a judge approved it because Westman identified as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification, according to court records. Because of this document, Westman has been referred to as transgender in the media. Jenner started by saying that shes still grieving the loss of her good friend and manager, Sophia Hutchins. Hutchins, who is also transgender and conservative, was rumored to have been Jenners girlfriend. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Im so upset with the way the media has handled this thing, she said, referring to the shooting. This guy was not a trans person.A handwritten journal that Westman reportedly shared on YouTube prior to their death, according to the New York Post, said that they were tired of being trans and I wish I never brain-washed myself. They said they wanted to cut their long hair, but that it would be an embarrassing defeat to do so and be a change of character that could get them reported. But they werent saying, according to the Post, that they were actually a cis man. Instead, they wanted to be a cis woman. I regret being trans. I wish I was a girl, I just know I cannot achieve that body with the technology we have today. I also cant afford that, they wrote. I hate my face maybe thats why I like furries so much. You can give yourself a new body and face. I want to be that black face mask on Beyonces body lmao!I know I am not a woman but I definitely dont feel like a man. Jenner, though, wasnt making any distinctions between wanting to be a cis man or a cis woman; all this meant was that Westman wasnt really trans. This was a sick individual, she said. This guy is a product of the DEIs of the last- You know hes like 22, 23 years old, he grew up with all this stuff, OK? He was a sick person with a lot of problems, and you dont become trans by wearing a wig and putting a dress on, she continued, even though Westman had long hair and wasnt wearing a wig or a dress at the time of the shooting or in their YouTube videos that were found after their death. And to have him identified as trans, even if he changed his name, OK, and then he comes back and Im sick of this and I dont want to be trans, hes one of the more confusing people. This gender ideology that were teaching our young people is destroying our young people, Jenner continued. Gender ideology is an expression the right uses to refer to the idea that trans people can exist and that one can have a gender identity that is separate from ones sex assigned at birth. It is unclear how Jenner understands her identity if she doesnt think that gender identity and sex are separate concepts.Host Gallagher asked her, What should we be doing, Caitlyn? First of all, Im a firm believer in Lets not talk about it,' she said, explaining that she has been on a rampage to keep biological men out of womens sports.Thats it, everything else about trans, Im for. And, uh, but just, for the last couple of years, it was a political issue. I mean, the Democrats were on one side, Trumps on the other side. Every day, they were talking about trans, trans, trans, trans, trans. Um, and it is really affecting a lot of people, and its hurting a lot of people. And people, like this very sick guy, are just examples. Unfortunately, were gonna see more of them.Neither she nor Gallagher brought up Westmans obsession with mass shooters, the racist, homophobic, and antisemitic slurs they wrote on their weapons, or their support for a local, pro-gun Republican politician and their disdain for Trump. Neither she nor Gallagher discussed how Westman was able to obtain the weapons they used for the shooting.
