A gunman opens fire at a high school in Turkey, wounding at least 16 before killing himself
Turkish security forces and emergency staff stand at the courtyard of a high school where an assailant opened fire, in Siverek, south east Turkey, Tuesday, April 14, 2026, (Mevlut Bayraktar/IHA via AP)2026-04-14T08:25:12Z ANKARA, Turkey (AP) A former student opened fire at a high school in southeast Turkey on Tuesday, wounding at least 16 people before killing himself, an official said. The 18-year-old attacker, armed with a shotgun, fired randomly at a vocational high school in Siverek, Sanliurfa province, before hiding inside the building. He later killed himself with the same shotgun, Gov. Hasan Sildak said. The attack left 10 students, four teachers, a canteen employee and a police officer wounded, Sildak said. While most of them were being treated in Siverek, five of the wounded teachers and students were were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital because their conditions were more serious, the governor said. The motive for the attack remains unclear. School shootings are rare in Turkey.Earlier, media reports said all students were evacuated and police special operations units were deployed after the assailant refused to surrender. The individual was cornered inside the building through police intervention and died after shooting himself, Sildak told reporters, adding that a comprehensive investigation into the shooting would be carried out.Video footage showed dozens of students running out of the school toward the gate and onto the street. Lebanon and Israel to hold first direct diplomatic talks in decades in Washington
Mohammed, 8, cries next to the coffin of his father, Hussein Makkah, during the funeral of 13 state security officers killed the previous day in an Israeli strike in Lebanons coastal city of Sidon, Lebanon, Saturday, April 11, 2026. (AP Photo/Emilio Morenatti)2026-04-14T09:34:46Z BEIRUT (AP) Lebanon and Israel are set to hold the first direct diplomatic talks in decades on Tuesday in Washington following more than a month of war between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group that has rocked the tiny Mediterranean country. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will take part in the talks in Washington with Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese Ambassador to the U.S. Nada Hamadeh Moawad. At least 2,089 people have been killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon, the Health Ministry said, among them 252 women, 166 children and 88 medical workers, while 6,762 others were wounded. More than 1 million people are displaced. The Lebanese government hopes the talks will pave the way to an end to the war. While Iran has set ending the wars in Lebanon and the region as a condition for talks with the United States, Lebanon insists on representing itself. Hezbollah and critics are skeptical and believe Lebanons government in Beirut has no leverage and should take advantage of the position of Iran, the groups key ally and patron. The Israeli military continues an invasion into southern Lebanon, which some Israeli officials have said aims to create a depopulated security zone from the border to the Litani River, some 30 kilometers (20 miles). Iran-backed Hezbollah, though weakened in its last war with Israel that ended in November 2024, still fires drones, rockets and artillery daily into northern Israel and on ground troops inside Lebanon. The Israeli and Lebanese governments are meeting to discuss ways to ensure long-term security on Israels northern border and support for Lebanon seeking to take control of its territory and political future from Iran-backed Hezbollah, a U.S. State Department official said. Read More They will be the first talks between the two since 1993, according to the official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Lebanons top political authorities, critical of Hezbollahs decision to fire rockets towards Israel on March 2 in solidarity with Iran, quickly proposed direct talks in a bid to stop the escalation, hoping that Israel would not launch its ground invasion. Israel did not respond positively until last week, after it launched 100 strikes across the country, including in the heart of the Lebanese capital.Beirut wants a truce as a prerequisite to talks, similar to Pakistan-brokered negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.Israels destruction of Lebanese territories is not the solution, nor will it yield any results, said President Joseph Aoun Monday, who came to power vowing to disarm non-state groups including Hezbollah. Diplomatic solutions have consistently proven to be the most effective means of resolving armed conflicts globally.Israel has ruled out a ceasefire. We will not discuss a ceasefire with Hezbollah , which continues to carry out indiscriminate attacks against Israel and our civilians, Shosh Bedrosian, a spokeswoman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Monday. Hezbollah and its supporters have been critical, calling it a free concession to Israel. Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Kassem delivered a fiery speech calling on Lebanon to cancel the talks. Hezbollah wants a return to the 2024 agreement under which talks were conducted indirectly with the U.S., France and the United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon as mediators.___Lee reported from Washington. Trump promised tax relief, but polling shows most Americans still think theyre overpaying
President Donald Trump speaks about the economy during an event at the Circa Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Jan. 25, 2025. (AP Photo/John Locher, File)2026-04-14T11:02:21Z WASHINGTON (AP) Most Americans still think their taxes are too high, according to recent polls, even after last years tax law fulfilled several of President Donald Trumps tax-related campaign promises. In fact, a new Fox News poll indicates people are more upset about taxes than they were last year. The findings from the survey, which was conducted in late March, are another sign that Americans are on edge about their personal finances as the U.S. experiences a spike in inflation and sluggish economic growth. Other polling finds that frustration goes beyond personal tax obligations, with many believing that wealthy people and corporations are not paying their fair share, while others worry about government waste. The surveys come after Trump and Republicans passed a massive tax and spending cut bill last year. The legislation enacted a range of tax breaks, including a boosted child tax credit and new tax deductions for tips and overtime. Tax refunds are up this season, and many households are expected to see more income from the Republicans tax legislation, but the Congressional Budget Office estimated it will ultimately give the largest benefits to the richest Americans.Republicans have touted the law as evidence that they are making life more affordable for working families. But polling shows that many Americans may not be feeling the benefits, especially as their tax refunds get eaten up by higher prices. Most say taxes are too high About 7 in 10 registered voters say the taxes they pay are too high, according to the Fox News poll. Thats up from about 6 in 10 last year. The poll shows heightened concern among very liberal voters and Democratic men, but there has also been a sizable increase among groups that Republicans want to court ahead of the midterm elections, such as moderates, rural voters and white voters without a college degree. Discontent about taxes has been rising for the past few years. Recent polling from Gallup, conducted in March, found about 6 in 10 U.S. adults say the amount of federal income tax they have to pay is too high, a finding thats been largely consistent in the annual poll since 2023. Thats approaching the level of unhappiness found in Gallups polling from the 1980s through the 1990s, before President George W. Bushs 2001 and 2003 tax cuts. Now, about half of Democrats and about 6 in 10 Republicans say their federal income taxes are too high. Republicans tend to view their tax bill more negatively than Democrats, but Gallups polling shows that this gap often shrinks when a Republican is president. Many believe the rich arent paying enough in taxesMost Americans are troubled by the belief that some wealthy people and corporations dont pay their fair share of taxes, according to a Pew Research Center poll conducted in January. About 6 in 10 Americans said each of those notions bothers them a lot, a measure that is largely unchanged in recent years.By contrast, only about 4 in 10 U.S. adults in that poll said the amount they personally pay in taxes bothers them a lot. About 8 in 10 Democrats are bothered a lot by the feeling that some corporations and rich people arent paying their fair share, the Pew survey found, compared to about 4 in 10 Republicans. Government spending is a bigger issue for Republicans, according to the Fox News poll, which found that 75% of registered voters and a similar share of Republican voters say almost all or a great deal of government funding is wasteful and inefficient. Read More That points to a perception problem for many Americans. Even if their own tax bill is manageable, the idea that the wealthy are underpaying or that the government is wasting their dollars bothers many. About half of Americans, 49%, in the Gallup poll say the income tax they will pay this year is not fair, which is in line with the record high from 2023. Broad unhappiness with Trumps tax approachAmericans tax frustration was rising before Trump re-entered the White House, but its still a problem for the presidents party especially if Americans are not feeling the relief that he promised. The Fox News poll found that about 6 in 10 registered voters, 64%, say they disapprove of how Trump is handling taxes, up from 53% last April. Disapproval has risen most sharply among independents, but also among Democrats and Republicans. This aligns with a broader feeling that Trump isnt doing enough to address inflation. Most Americans said Trump had hurt the cost of living a lot or a little in his second term, according to an AP-NORC poll conducted in January. Roughly 9 in 10 Democrats and about 6 in 10 independents said Trump has had a negative impact on the cost of living. Less than half of Republicans, 43%, said Trump had helped the cost of living, while 33% said he hadnt made a difference and only 23% said hed helped. ___The Fox News poll was conducted among 1,001 registered voters from March 20-23. The Gallup poll was conducted among 1,000 U.S. adults from March 2-18. The Pew Research Center poll was conducted among 8,512 U.S. adults from Jan. 20-26. The AP-NORC Poll was conducted among 1,203 U.S. adults from Jan 8-11. LINLEY SANDERS Sanders is a polls and surveys reporter for The Associated Press. Growing Up With Brothers, Ive Always Gotten Along Better With Guys Who Dont Respect Me
Im not your average girl. Sure, I wear makeup, jewelry, and dresses, but dont let my feminine exterior fool you: I like to drink beer. I love sports. And I can hang with the boys, even when things get a little rough and rowdy. Thats because when I was younger, I had no other choice.Growing up with brothers, Ive always gotten along better with guys who dont respect me.Maybe its the fact that I was raised with three older boys who were constantly putting me in headlocks and calling me degrading nicknames, but as an adult, theres nothing I enjoy more than spending time with men who belittle me, taunt me, or question my intelligence. Most women I know would prefer to drink wine and gossip with their girlfriends. Not me! Id rather go to a sports bar, watch the game, and sit silently while the guys either ignore me for hours, compare me to their nagging wives, or explain the rules of football to me like Im a child.Dont get me wrong. I love all my girlfriends! But I was surrounded by so much masculine energy as a kid that Im just more comfortable hanging out with guys who fundamentally view me as a second-class citizen. Girls can be so catty! But not my male friends. They just forget Im there, talk over me, and call me a boner killer or ask me if Im on my period if I ever express an opinion. If you give me the choice between girl talk and being told to shut your mouth, woman or go make me a sandwich while a room full of men erupts into raucous laughter, thats a no-brainer! I just love watching sports and staying silent!I remember when I was in middle school. All the girls would want to go to the mall or talk about kissing boys. I felt like an alien! But I always felt like myself around my brothers and their friendsgetting mocked when I tried to play basketball with them, being pushed to the ground, and being told to fuck off because they thought I was a freak and an ugly, horse-faced lesbo.Even today, Id much rather have guy friends who tell me Im pretty smart for a girl, or hang out with my male coworkers who say that I was just hired because they needed a woman and I had a nice rack. If theres an intramural flag football team, Im on it! And the guys put me on the bench. When I first started dating my future husband, he was shocked at how many male friends I had. I guess hed never seen a woman who could kick back with the guys and bite her tongue while validating and ignoring years of casual sexism! You try growing up with three misogynistic brothers and coming out normal!Yes, my childhood was crazy, but my brothers made me the person I am today. For the rest of my life, Ill always gravitate towards men who look straight past me, overlook me professionally, objectify me, stereotype me, physically intimidate me, and view my entire gender as inferior. I just love being told I only got a promotion because I probably slept with the boss! It always makes me feel at home. What can I say? Im just one of the guys! And I feel like shit all the time! The post Growing Up With Brothers, Ive Always Gotten Along Better With Guys Who Dont Respect Me appeared first on The Onion.

    Pentagon Develops Tactical Zoot Suit
WASHINGTONCalling the snazzy battle garments the most substantial advancement in boogie-woogie warfare in 85 years, Pentagon officials confirmed Friday that development on the U.S. militarys highly specialized tactical zoot suit had been completed. These combat zoot suits with high waists and oversized jackets are key to keeping our troops safe and jazzy on the battlefield, said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, confirming his department had spent a large portion of its budget measuring, tailoring, and fortifying the new uniforms ballistic steel shoulder pads for use in war. What may look like a comically large blazer popularized by the pachuco subculture in the late 1930s is in reality a complex composite armored structure capable of withstanding a one-megaton blast. The stealth pinstripe camouflage ensures any swingin hipster soldier can seamlessly evade detection in hostile territory, while the combat fedora and elongated watch chain will allow our men to jump, jive, n wail all over enemy forces.According to Hegseth, the tactical zoot suit was developed by some of the top hepcats at Northrop Grumman in conjunction with Mens Wearhouse. The post Pentagon Develops Tactical Zoot Suit appeared first on The Onion.

Google, Microsoft, Meta All Tracking You Even When You Opt Out, According to an Independent Audit
An independent privacy audit of Microsoft, Meta, and Google web traffic in California found that the companies may be violating state regulations and racking up billions in fines. According to the audit from privacy search engine webXray, 55 percent of the sites it checked set ad cookies in a users browser even if they opted out of tracking. Each company disputed or took issue with the research, with Google saying it was based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how its product works. The webXray California Privacy Audit viewed web traffic on more than 7,000 popular websites in California in the month of March and found that most tech companies ignore when a user asks to opt-out of cookie tracking. California has stringent and well defined privacy legislation thanks to its California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) which allows users to, among other things, opt out of the sale of their personal information. Theres a system called Global Privacy Control (GPC), which includes a browser extension that indicates to a website when a user wants to opt out of tracking.According to the webXray audit, Google failed to let users opt out 87 percent of the time. Googles failure to honor the GPC opt-out signal is easy to find in network traffic. When a browser using GPC connects to Googles servers it encodes the opt-out signal by sending the code sec-gpc: 1. This means Google should not return cookies, the audit said. However, when Googles server responds to the network request with the opt-out it explicitly responds with a command to create an advertising cookie named IDE using the set-cookie command. This non-compliance is easy to spot, hiding in plain sight. The audit said that Microsoft fails to opt out users in the same way and has a failure rate of 50 percent in the web traffic webXray viewed. Metas failure rate was 69 percent and a bit more comprehensive. Meta instructs publishers to install the following tracking code on their websites. The code contains no check for globally standard opt-out signalsit loads unconditionally, fires a tracking event, and sets a cookie regardless of the consumers privacy preferences, the audit said. It showed a copy of Metas tracking data which contains no GPC check at all.webXray is an independent technology company that runs a search engine that lets people look for privacy violations on the internet. Its founder Timothy Libert is the former lead of cookie policy and compliance at Google. Libert told 404 Media he felt his job at Google was to protect its users but that his bosses didnt agree. He left the company in 2023 and started webXray.Shortly before I left my boss told me, direct quote, my job is to protect the company. There was another time I got into a very serious ontological discussion with a fairly senior engineer about what the difference was between taxes and fines and they didnt understand there was a difference, he said.Microsoft, Meta, and Google have collectively paid billions in fees for previous privacy violations similar to the ones Libert and webXray found during the audit. According to Libert, the big tech companies dont fear these fines. In many ways fines have come to replace taxes, he said. What Im trying to show here is, How is enforcement failing? What were trying to do here is put people in the regulatory and legal community who work on these issues to have an understanding of whats actually going on under the hood. One of the things going on under the hood revealed in the audit is how cookie banners work. Anyone who uses the internet has seen these annoying pop-ups that ask users how they want to handle cookies issued from the site. These are called consent management platforms (CPM). Google, one of the premier purveyors of cookies, runs a service called Cookiebot that certifies CPMs.This clear conflict of interest led us to ask: do these CMPs actually work? the audit said. By measuring what happens when an opt-out signal is sent to a website, we were able to find out, and the findings are clear: no Google-certified CMP we evaluated works 100% of the time, and all of them are often found to fail to prevent Google from setting cookies despite opt-out signals being present.webXray said it tested three CMP companies and found opt-out failure rates of 77 percent, 91 percent, and 90 percent. It does not work. It fails. It lets Google, specifically the party who said that this will work, it lets them set cookies, Libert said.Google, Meta, and Microsoft all disputed the audit. This report is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how our products work. We honor opt-out provided by advertisers and publishers as required by law, a Google spokesperson told 404 Media. This is a marketing ploy that mischaracterizes how GPC works and Meta's role," Meta told 404 Media. GPC only restricts certain uses of third-party data and allows website operators to override GPC signals, and we offer the Limited Data Use feature to help websites indicate what permissions they have. When data is transmitted to us with the LDU flag, we restrict the use of that data, as specified in our State-Specific Terms.Consumer privacy is a top priority for us, and we remain committed to transparency and compliance with applicable privacy requirements. As outlined in our Privacy Statement, when we receive a GPC signal, we opt the user out of sharing personal data with third parties for personalized advertising, and our advertising systems are designed to reflect that choice, a Microsoft spokesperson said. Certain Microsoft cookies are necessary for operational purposes, and may therefore be placed and read even when a GPC signal is detected. In my view this stuff isnt complicated. You say, dont set the cookie. They set the cookie, Libert said. The regulators see a fox going into the henhouse and the fox says, Im just here to count the eggs, not to eat any chickens. And they take them at their word. They dont make them produce any public record. When caught, governments levy fines against companies and the companies pay. Libert said that isnt enough. They can just pay fines forever, he said.Key to the audit is that Libert and his team provided a simple solution to the violations. According to webXray, its as easy as adding one line of code. When Microsofts ad server receives traffic with Sec-GPC: 1, all it has to do is return a 451 Unavailable For Legal Reasons status code to indicate the content cannot be served due to the consumers legally defined opt-out. No cookie is set in this condition, the audit said. This is the Strait of Hormuz in the data economy. If you want to make a change, this is where you cut it off. Anything short of that is theatrical political posture, Libert said.

12-Year-Old Accepted Into Worst College Imaginable
WABASH, INEmphasizing that her sons young age had never stopped him from pursuing his dreams, local mother Hannah Butler celebrated Monday when her 12-year-old was accepted into the worst college imaginable. After years of hard work and skipping several grades, we are so proud that our son will be attending Duane McAskill University [an unaccredited school with a 99% acceptance rate] in the fall, said Butler, adding that her son Connor cried when he opened the envelope informing him that hed been admitted to the recently founded for-profit college in central Indiana, which lacks a central campus, tenured professors,or any math and science classes for its 200 students. He has always been so advanced for his age, and I know DMU [which is ranked 3,800th in the country by U.S. News & World Report] will only further his [subpar] education. Whether he decides to be a doctor, physicist, or professor, I know the college [currently being investigated for financial fraud] will get him there. Butler added that when it came to her 12-year-old son, paying $95,000 a year for a worthless diploma was worth every penny. The post 12-Year-Old Accepted Into Worst College Imaginable appeared first on The Onion.

Harvey Weinstein is going on trial again in a New York rape case
Harvey Weinstein appears in court for a pre-trial hearing, Thursday, March 19, 2026, in New York. (Jefferson Siegel/The New York Times via AP, Pool)2026-04-14T04:07:05Z NEW YORK (AP) After years of #MeToo infamy, legal peril and prison, Harvey Weinstein is again going on trial on a rape charge in New York City.Jury selection is set to start as early as Tuesday in the onetime movie moguls latest retrial, where jurors will weigh for the third time whether he raped hairstylist and actor Jessica Mann in a Manhattan hotel in 2013.But its not going to be a mirror image of the last trial, new Weinstein lawyer Marc Agnifilo told Judge Curtis Farber last month. This time, jurors will weigh only one charge based on one accuser, rather than the array of allegations that were aired at Weinsteins previous trials in New York and Los Angeles. The Oscar-winning producer denies all the accusations and declared in court this winter that he had acted wrongly, but I never assaulted anyone. The judge has indicated he might revisit some rulings about exactly what evidence gets presented about Weinsteins and Manns years of interactions. And Weinsteins recent change in attorneys could shift the trials tenor and tactics. Agnifilo and his partners took on the case only in February, when longtime Weinstein lawyer Arthur Aidala stepped aside from the retrial to focus on the former studio bosss appeals and civil matters. Both Aidala and Agnifilo are well-known New York defense attorneys, but their litigation styles differ. Aidala is folksy, while Agnifilo is more buttoned-up. Weinstein wielded significant clout in the entertainment industry, having built his reputation on such critical and popular hits as Shakespeare in Love, Pulp Fiction and Chocolat. He also became a prominent Democratic donor. Read More Then a series of sexual harassment and sex assault allegations against Weinstein began to emerge in news media in 2017, propelling the #MeToo movement. He was criminally charged in New York in 2018 and in Los Angeles two years later. Weinstein went to trial and was convicted of some but not all counts in both cases. His initial New York convictions were overturned, spurring a retrial last year. The retrial verdict was mixed: Weinstein was convicted of forcing oral sex on production assistant and producer Miriam Haley in 2006, but he was acquitted of forcibly performing oral sex that same year on model-turned-psychotherapist Kaja Sokola. The jury didnt decide on the rape charge involving Mann because the foreperson refused to keep deliberating. Weinstein subsequently considered pleading guilty, according to Aidala. Evidently, Weinstein ultimately rejected the idea. Mann has testified that she had a consensual, on-and-off relationship with the then-married Weinstein. But when he cornered her in a Manhattan hotel room where she was staying on a weekend getaway, she protested, I dont want to do this, she told jurors. She said he kept making advances and demands until she just gave up.Weinstein hasnt testified at any of his trials, but his lawyers have contended that he never had non-consensual sex. The defense claimed that Mann and his other accusers willingly entertained his sexual overtures because they wanted his help with their show-business aspirations. The women, by contrast, said Weinstein dangled his Hollywood influence to draw them into his orbit and then victimize them. His sexual assault conviction involving Haley carries the potential for up to 25 years in prison; no sentencing date has been set. In this case, the yet-to-be-decided rape charge is a lower-level felony punishable by up to four years behind bars. Weinstein, 73, already has served longer than that.Weinstein suffers from various health problems and uses a wheelchair. He said in court in January that hes haunted by the possibility that he might die in New Yorks notorious Rikers Island jail.My mental state is collapsing. My spirit is breaking, he told the judge. Weinsteins lawyers have argued that his New York conviction last year was poisoned by bad blood among jurors. Meanwhile, hes appealing the Los Angeles verdict. The Associated Press generally does not identify people without their permission if they say they have been sexually assaulted. Haley, Mann and Sokola agreed to be named.
