APNEWS.COMAs world gets hotter, Americans are turning to more sugar, study findsA person eats ice cream Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, in Cincinnati. (AP Photo/Joshua A. Bickel)2025-09-08T15:02:43Z WASHINGTON (AP) Global warming in the United States is amping up the countrys sweet tooth, a new study found. When the temperature rises, Americans especially those with less money and education drink lots more sugary beverages and a bit more frozen desserts. That amounts to more than 100 million pounds of added sugar (358 million kilograms) consumed in the nation a year, compared to 15 years earlier, according to a team of researchers in the U.S. and United Kingdom. When temperatures go between 54 and 86 degrees (12 and 30 degrees Celsius), the amount of sugar the average American consumes goes up by about 0.4 grams per degree Fahrenheit (0.7 grams per degree Celsius) per day, based on researchers tracking of weather conditions and consumers purchases. At 54 degrees, the amount of added sugar for the average American is a little more than 2 grams. At 86 degrees, its more than 15 grams. Beyond that, appetites lessen and added sugar falls off, according to the study in Mondays Nature Climate Change.Climate change is shaping what you eat and how you eat and that might have a bad effect on your health, said study co-author Duo Chan, a climate scientist at the University of Southampton.People tend to take in more sweetened beverages as the temperature is getting higher and higher, Chan said. Obviously under a warming climate that would cause you to drink more or take in more sugar. And that is going to be a severe problem when it comes to health. A little added sugar every day adds upThe daily difference from higher temperatures doesnt amount to even a single candy bar for the average person. But it adds up over time and has a big effect, said University of California San Francisco endocrinology professor Dr. Robert Lustig, a specialist in pediatrics and obesity who wasnt part of the study.Lustig wrote in an email that among poorer Americans, just one added can of sugary soft drink per day increases diabetes risk by 29% and temperature-related thirst plays a big part in Americas obesity epidemic. The United States average annual temperature has gone up about 2.2 degrees (1.2 degrees Celsius) since 1895, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. To chart the impact on sugar consumption, researchers compared it to the American Heart Association recommendations: limiting daily intake to 36 grams for men and 25 grams for women. The team then compared wind, precipitation and humidity records to the detailed purchase records of 40,000 to 60,000 American households from 2004 to 2019, not using any data after the pandemic hit. Then they looked at the nutritional information of the items bought. That allowed them to eliminate other factors to make a causal link and come up with a calculation for how much extra sugar is consumed per person per degree, said lead author Pan He, an environmental scientist at Cardiff University.Researcher He said she started thinking about the study when she noticed that people in the U.S. tend to grab sugary soda when they are thirsty: From a perspective of nutrition science or environmental science, that could be a problem, she said. Sugar consumption can vary with gender, income and educationThe researchers found that men consumed more sugary soft drinks, and that the amount of added sugar consumed during hot weather was several times higher for low- and very low-income families than for the wealthiest, the study found. People who work outside drank more sugary drinks than those who work inside, and the same went for families where the head of the household was less educated. White people have the highest added sugar effect, while Asians showed no significant change in added sugar in the heat.Lustig said sugary drinks are marketed and priced in a way to attract the poor, and in many disadvantaged communities the water tastes funny because of chemicals in them. Poor people are also less likely to have air conditioning and are more likely to work outside and need more hydration, Lustig and He said.It should concern us that the rate of the impact is larger in households where people make less money or are less educated, said Dr. Courtney Howard, vice chair of the Global Climate and Health Alliance. These groups tend to have lower baseline health status, so this is an area where climate-related changes appear to magnify existing health inequalities. Howard, an emergency room physician, was not part of the study. The amount of sugar consumed is likely to soar in the future with more warming, Chan said. But University of Washington health and climate scientist Kristie Ebi, who wasnt part of the research, said as temperatures increase with human-caused climate change there will be other issues of more importance than a small increase in sugary beverages.___The Associated Press climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. Appeals court upholds E. Jean Carrolls $83.3 million defamation judgment against Trump2025-09-08T14:44:30Z NEW YORK (AP) A federal appeals court has upheld a civil jurys finding that Donald Trump must pay $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll for his repeated social media attacks against the longtime advice columnist after she accused him of sexual assault. In a ruling issued Monday, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Trumps appeal of the defamation award, finding that the jurys damages awards are fair and reasonable. The $83.3 million defamation judgment was awarded by a civil jury over Trumps repeated attacks on Carroll, who accused him of sexually assaulting her in a department store in the 1990s. A separate jury also awarded Carroll in $5 million in a 2023 sexual assault and defamation verdict. Trumps lawyers had asked for a new trial. APNEWS.COMNoem says roundup of Koreans at Hyundai plant in Georgia wont deter investment in the USUnited States Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem speaks to the media during the Five Country Ministerial meeting at the Honourable Artillery Company in London, Monday, Sept. 8, 2025. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung)2025-09-08T08:43:55Z LONDON (AP) U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Monday she doesnt think the detention of hundreds of South Koreans in an immigration raid at a Hyundai plant in Georgia will deter investment in the United States because such tough actions mean there is no uncertainty about the Trump administrations policies. The detention of 475 workers, more than 300 of them South Korean, in the Sept. 4 raid has caused confusion, shock and a sense of betrayal among many in the U.S.-allied nation. This is a great opportunity for us to make sure that all companies are reassured that when you come to the United States, youll know what the rules of the game are, Noem said at a meeting in London of ministers from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partnership focused on border security. Were encouraging all companies who want to come to the United States and help our economy and employ people, that we encourage them to employ U.S. citizens and to bring people to our country that want to follow our laws and work here the right way, she told reporters. The detained Koreans would be deported after most were detained for ignoring removal orders, while a few had engaged in other criminal activity and will face the consequences, Noem said. Newly appointed U.K. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood welcomed Noem and ministers from Canada, Australia and New Zealand to the 18th-century headquarters of the Honourable Artillery Company for talks on countering unauthorized migration, child sexual abuse and the spread of opioids. Mahmood, who was given the interior minister job in a shakeup of Prime Minister Keir Starmers Cabinet on Friday, said the ministers would agree new measures to protect our borders with our Five Eyes partners, hitting people-smugglers hard. The far-flung countries are close allies with some common problems but also widely differ in their approaches to migration. The Trump administrations program of street raids, mass detentions and large-scale deportations of unauthorized migrants has drawn domestic and international criticism and a host of legal challenges. Noem says tough measures are an inspiration to others Noem said there had not been disagreements among the ministers in talks focused on sharing information on criminal gangs, using technology to disrupt their networks and speeding extradition arrangements.I dont think that the discussion today has covered politics at all, she said. It is what resources do we have that we can share so we can each protect our countries better?Noem said that when we put tough measures in place, the more that we can talk about that and share that is an inspiration to other countries to do the same. She denied a plan to expand immigration raids and deploy the National Guard in Chicago, which has met with opposition from local and state authorities, was on hold.Nothings on hold. Everything is full speed ahead, Noem told reporters, saying we can run as many operations every single day as we need to, to keep America safe. Also attending Mondays talks were Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, Australias Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke and Judith Collins, the attorney general and defense minister of New Zealand. UK grapples with migrant crossings Britains center-left Labour government is struggling to bring down the number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, some 30,000 so far this year. It faces calls from opposition parties to leave the European Convention on Human Rights in order to take tougher action. The government says it wont do that, but may tweak the interpretation of the rights convention in British law. It has struck a deal with France to return some migrants who cross the channel and is working on similar agreements with other countries.Mahmood said Monday that the U.K. could suspend issuing visas to people from countries that do not agree to take back their citizens with no right to remain in Britain, though she did not name any potential countries. We do expect countries to play ball, play by the rules, and if one of your citizens has no right to be in our country, you do need to take them back, she said. WWW.404MEDIA.COICE Spends Millions on Clearview AI Facial Recognition to Find People Assaulting OfficersImmigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently spent nearly four million dollars on facial recognition technology in part to investigate people it believes have assaulted law enforcement officers, according to procurement records reviewed by 404 Media. The records are unusual in that they indicate ICE is buying the technology to identify people who might clash with the agencys officers as they continue the Trump administrations mass deportation efforts. Authorities have repeatedly claimed members of the public have assaulted or otherwise attacked ICE or other immigration enforcement officers, only later for charges to be dropped or lowered when it emerged authorities misrepresented what happened or brutally assaulted protesters themselves. In other cases, prosecutions are ongoing.Do you know anything else about how ICE is using facial recognition tech or other tools? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.This award procures facial recognition software, which supports Homeland Security Investigations with capabilities of identifying victims and offenders in child sexual exploitation cases and assaults against law enforcement officers, the procurement records reads. The September 5 purchase awards $3,750,000 to well-known and controversial facial recognition firm Clearview AI. The record indicates the total value of the contract is $9,225,000.Clearview became infamous as the first tech company to cross the rubicon with regards to facial recognition technology: Clearview built a massive database of billions of images scraped from social media and the public web, letting a law enforcement upload a photo or snap someones face with their phone, and be given a gallery of potential matching images and the persons identity. Since being first revealed in the New York Times in 2020, Clearview has established itself as a government contractor, working with the FBI, U.S. Marshals, the Army, and even NASA.Clearview has also repeatedly contracted with ICE, according to procurement records. But those purchases did not explicitly say the technology would be used to identify people the agency believed were assaulting officers.A screenshot of the procurement record.ICE officers commonly wear masks to hide their identity, and masked men seen in social media videos often refuse to state what agency they are with. ICE has claimed that assaults against its officers have increased and used this as a justification for the masks. It is unclear how ICE has come to its figures saying assaults have jumped hundreds of percent. The FBI has already used facial recognition technology to identify people suspected of assaulting ICE officers. Robert Jacob Hoopes was arrested in July and is accused of striking an ICE officer in the head with a rock and damaging the ICE building in South Portland, The Oregonian reported. The complaint said an FBI Special Agent uploaded a photo into commercially available facial recognition software. Hoopes entered a not guilty plea in mid-August, according to court records.Los Angeles protester Jose Manuel Mojica was initially charged with assaulting border patrol agents before authorities dropped those charges. Instead, he was the one who was attacked, according to his account and cellphone footage shared with The Guardian. He told the outlet We are not the violent ones. They escalated it. They are chasing down innocent people, and There was a different way to handle the situation than to beat me.Authorities arrested Adrian Martinez in June after he protested the arrest of a worker in a shopping center parking lot. After agents violently detained him, Martinez says the agents told him he was arrested for assaulting a federal officer, and later was accused of punching an agent in the face. As the Los Angeles Times reported, the agents pointed to the colleague Martinez was accused of assaulting. I dont even remember you, Martinez told the outlet. It just seemed like they were trying to get me to say like, Yes, you assaulted him, but I knew I didnt. Martinez was later charged with conspiracy to impede a federal officer, and the complaint makes no mention of a punch, the Los Angeles Times added.ICEs use of Clearview is in addition to its new facial recognition app Mobile Fortify, which 404 Media previously revealed. Rather than public images like Clearview, Mobile Fortify taps into a wide array of government databases and uses a system ordinarily reserved for when people enter or exit the U.S. According to a user guide 404 Media has seen, the facial recognition app brings up in its results whether a subject has been marked for deportation. Congress demanded more information from DHS about the tool last week following 404 Medias reporting.Neither ICE or Clearview responded to a request for comment.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 5 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMeet the death doulas who help LGBTQ+ people die with dignityIn Michigan, where politicians debate on several bills, including bathroom bills, LGBTQ+ rights face daily challenges. Among these battles is one being fought in living rooms and hospital beds: the right to simply die with dignity. For most queer elders who spent years of their lives hiding their authentic selves, death can be the final closet but an underground network is changing that story, a network of death doulas, operating without formal training or legal recognition, and creating the support systems that mainstream healthcare refuses to provide. Related Frank Kameny & Sylvia Rivera are heroes, but their deaths reveal a sad truth about queer elders The encrypted message was received at 3:45 a.m.: Trans fem elder. Stage 4 pancreatic. Family hostile. Needs advocate. Can you help?Maya Rodriguez, a 43-year-old transgender woman and a volunteer death doula, was already awake and on her feet. Rodriguez hardly sleeps for more than five hours a day, a dedicated individual, always ready to respond to urgent calls or messages from LGBTQ+ elders facing their final days in a healthcare system that most times denies their humanity. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today We operate like a resistance movement because we have to.Pat WilliamsWithin the space of an hour, she was at the beautiful Detroit apartment, making sure her clients name and gender identity would be honored in medical records. The elder kept saying, Thank God you are here. I was scared they would not understand, she recalls. She held the elders hand when the ambulance arrived. It is work that hospice corporations rarely have time to do properly, if they are willing to do it at all. Why Queer Elders Fear Dying in ShameDeath doulas also referred to as end-of-life doulas provide non-medical assistance or support to persons and their families during their final days, offering emotional, spiritual, and practical assistance. Unlike hospice workers who focus on medical care and symptom management, doulas spend hours or days to ensure that a dying persons final chapter honors their complete life story. For queer elders, this support is crucial. Many came of age at a time when being openly queer could mean losing their jobs, families, and safety. They now encounter similar prejudices in healthcare settings. These systems assume everyone has a supportive biological family and fit heteronormative boxes. These assumptions are wrong.Rodriguez became a death doula after losing her own mentor, her mother, a transgender elder often misgendered by hospice staff despite her legal documents. As a teen, she watched someone she loved dearly be erased in her final weeks. She swore not to let that happen to others. The Number Behind the NeedMichigan mirrors a national crisis. According to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, about 40% of LGBTQ+ adults who are over 50 report experiencing healthcare discrimination; for transgender elders, the rate is higher. About 15% avoid care entirely for fear of discrimination, maltreatment, or verbal harassment by health workers. Isolation worsens the problem: 39.8% of LGBTQ+ elders live alone, compared to 26.2% of heterosexual peers, leaving many without advocates.Michigan, unlike other states, does not have any dedicated LGBTQ+-affirming hospice or senior living facilities. States like California and New York have LGBTQ+-focused senior living communities like Stonewall Gardens in California and the Palms of Manasota in Florida. This gap forces LGBTQ+ elders to rely on underground networks like the queer death doulas for affirming care. In contrast, for-profit hospices nationwide prioritize shareholder returns, often minimizing expenses on training and services not incentivized, such as extended cultural competency programs.I watched 37 years of love being erased in real time. Thats why we existnot just to help people die, but to help them live fully until they dont.Maya Rodriguez Building Networks in the ShadowsIn response to these systemic failures, an informal network of queer death doulas operates largely through encrypted apps like Signal and WhatsApp, sharing client referrals and maintaining password-protected spreadsheets that rate providers on their LGBTQ+ competency. We operate like a resistance movement because we have to, says Patricia Pat Williams, 67, a retired social worker and network coordinator. She started offering end-of-life support during the height of the AIDS crisis, a time when hospitals denied dying gay men access to treatment. We learned early that we couldnt rely on institutions to treat us as equals, with dignity, so we built our own through word-of-mouth referrals and encrypted networksbecause many of us fear professional retaliation if our identities are discovered. The networks principles stand in direct opposition to for-profit healthcareno one is turned away for their inability to pay, all gender identities are honored regardless of legal paperwork, and family is defined by chosen relationships, and not blood ties. Training Through Experience and Shared WisdomMost death doulas flee expensive certification programs; instead, they learn through rigorous, in-depth practical workshops, monthly programs held in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Lansing. Sessions cover practical skills: preventing bedsores, advocating with medical staff, and solving issues related to cultural sensitivity.Experienced death doulas mentor newcomers through their first cases. They learn everything from how to advocate with medical staff to creating a safe space for clients who have spent decades hiding their authentic selves. The network maintains detailed records of best practices, legal considerations, and cultural sensitivity protocolsall shared through secure digital channels.Formal training teaches you about the bodys processes, Rodriguez says. We teach each other how to protect dignity for people who have been told for decades they do not deserve it. Legal knowledge is critical. Michigans 2023 expansion of medical aid-in-dying laws increased patient autonomy but also opened doors to risks. Without formal medical credentials, doulas must be wary of actions that could be seen as unauthorized medical assistance. The Daily Practice of DignityA days work might mean updating a trans elders legal documents, intervening when hospital staff misgenders a patient, or helping to plan a memorial that reflects a persons true identity. Doulas also carry out body autonomy ritualswashing the dead while affirming their gender. This helps to counter funeral home erasure and advocates for clients whose families reject their chosen relationships.Rodriguez recalls accompanying a lesbian couple who had been together for 37 years to the hospital for an appointment. A particular staff member repeatedly misgendered theman experience that highlights the day-to-day discrimination many LGBTQ+ elders face daily.I watched 37 years of love being erased in real time, she says. Thats why we existnot just to help people die, but to help them live fully until they dont. From Resistance to RecognitionSome healthcare institutions are beginning to recognize the value of community-based approaches. Corktown Health in Detroit, for instance, has expressed interest in learning from grassroots models, and academic institutions, including the University of Michigan, have shown curiosity about community-led care innovations. Advocates are fighting for Medicaid reimbursement, affordable state certification pathways, and stronger legal protections for chosen family decision-making.Under Michigans law, a clients estranged family member who hasnt spoken to them in years could override the client on morphine decisions. Death doulas help clients avoid such scenarios. They legally outmaneuver hostile families while surrounding queer elders with love. Qualitative reports and community feedback suggest that queer death doula networks achieve higher patient satisfaction rates and better symptom management than traditional hospice care for LGBTQ+ patients, though formal studies and funding remain limited. While Michigans medical aid-in-dying legislation allows terminally ill patients with fewer than six months to request life-ending medication under strict safeguards, including waiting periods and mental capacity evaluation, its implementation has been uneven, with many healthcare providers refusing to participate on religious or moral grounds. These legal changes, while broadening access, mirror ongoing systemic challenges that affect marginalized communities, including queer and Black elders, who often face additional barriers in healthcare and end-of-life planning. As the network continues to grownow exceeding 80 active volunteers across Michigancritical questions about formalization and sustainability emerge. Some advocates are calling for state recognition and funding to sustain the network, while others worry that formal institutionalization might undermine its flexibility and cultural sensitivity. Were at a crossroads, says Williams. Should we work to change the system from within, or focus on building independent alternatives that truly meet our communitys needs? For Rodriguez, the path is clear. During the AIDS crisis, we buried lovers that hospitals refused to touch. Today, were committed to ensuring that LGBTQ+ elders never have to endure that kind of forgotten trauma again. This isnt just about care; its a movement for dignity and justice. As she speaks, her phone buzzes with another message. Another elder reaching out in fear, another opportunity to provide the care that mainstream medicine too often denies.Names have been changed to protect the privacy of doula network members and their clients. Many doulas fear professional retaliation if identified, hence the encrypted networks and underground operations. Some locations were altered to protect safety.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 3 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMThe growing LGBTQ+ elder population is shaping what it means to age with dignityAs the LGBTQ+ population gets older and many of us within that population get older we are going to be asking questions about what life will look like for us in the coming decades. Being queer or trans often means forging ones own way through unknown territory. Unlike with cisgender/heterosexual people, were not often presented with models of how to find and build relationships or build our families, and the same could be said about aging. Related An activist educates senior care staff about welcoming LGBTQ+ elders But the U.S. population is aging rapidly. The Census Bureau found that around 12% of the population was over the age of 65 in 2000, but that number had risen to 18% by 2023. By 2050, that percentage is predicted to be 23%.LGBTQ+ people will be part of that trend. Not only will we age like the rest of the population, but people in younger generations will also be more comfortable being out. A Gallup poll last year found that while only 1.1% and 2.3% of the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers identified as LGBTQ+, respectively, 4.5% of Gen X and 9.8% of Millennials were out. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today The oldest Millennials and youngest Gen Xers will be 70 years old in 2050, leading to a senior population that will get more queer.LGBTQ+ elders face unique problems. According to SAGE, which advocates for LGBTQ+ elders, this demographic is twice as likely to be alone and half as likely to have children compared to cishet elders. Theyre also five times less likely to have gotten married. Forty-eight percent of LGBTQ+ elders say they feel socially isolated. Loneliness is associated with numerous health impacts, including an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and dementia.Because of the way LGBTQ+ people structure their social relationships, elder LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be caregivers for other elder LGBTQ+ people. LGBTQ+ elders also face discrimination when it comes to long-term care and caregiving support, and are more likely to avoid getting the care they need out of fear of discrimination. Over half of the people living with HIV in the U.S. are over the age of 50. One 2022 study found that 41% of LGBTQ+ elders worried about having to recloset or start to hide their identities again if they had to live in senior housing. A lifetime of discrimination can also affect how many resources LGBTQ+ elders have available to them older LGBTQ+ people are more likely to depend on federal SNAP benefits for food. LGBTQ Nations September Issue will focus on the needs and triumphs of LGBTQ+ elders. Pieces in this months edition will examine what its like to live as an LGBTQ+ elder, how to age in community with other LGBTQ+ people, and even aspects related to end-of-life care.Other articles in this edition will be informed by readers. We asked you last month to share your stories about what has changed in your lifetime, so we can take stock of the progress our community has made over the past few decades and connect people with the stories of our elders.Just like with everything else LGBTQ+ people do, expect to find us shaping what it means to age with dignity just as much as aging shapes our community.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 4 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

Train slams into a bus outside Mexico City and kills at least 8 people2025-09-08T16:17:32Z MEXICO CITY (AP) A train slammed into a double-deck bus northwest of Mexico City early Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring 45, authorities said. The accident took place in the town of Atlacomulco. The state of Mexicos civil defense agency said via X that authorities were still working at the site of the accident in an industrial area, with large warehouses and factories.Authorities did not immediately give details about how it occurred, but one video circulated on social platforms showed the bus in heavy traffic slowly moving across the train tracks when the fast-moving train suddenly appeared out of frame, ramming the bus at its midpoint. The trains momentum carried the bus down the tracks and out of frame. There were no visible crossing gates or other signals. Just prior to the crash cars could be seen crossing the tracks as traffic advanced.Another video showed the bus at rest to the side of the tracks. The roof of the bus was gone and people could be seen moving on the top level as the train slowed to a stop.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 4 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

APNEWS.COMChief justice lets Trump remove member of Federal Trade Commission for nowChief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts arrives before President Donald Trump addresses a joint session of Congress at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, March 4, 2025. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)2025-09-08T15:08:35Z WASHINGTON (AP) Chief Justice John Roberts on Monday let President Donald Trump remove a member of the Federal Trade Commission, the latest in a string of high-profile firings allowed for now by Supreme Court.Trump first moved to fire Rebecca Slaughter in the spring, but she sued and lower courts ordered her reinstated because the law allows commissioners to be removed only for problems like misconduct or neglect of duty.Roberts halted those decisions in a brief order, responding to an appeal from the Trump administration on the courts emergency docket. The Justice Department has argued that the FTC and other executive branch agencies are under Trumps control and the Republican president is free to remove commissioners without cause.Slaughters lawsuit over her firing will keep playing out, as Roberts asked her lawyers to respond to the Trump administrations arguments by next week. The court has previously allowed the firings of several other board members of independent agencies. It has suggested, however, that his power to fire has limitations at the Federal Reserve, a prospect that could soon be tested with the case of Fed Gov. Lisa Cook. Mondays order is the latest sign that the Supreme Courts conservative majority has effectively abandoned a 90-year-old high court precedent that protected some federal agencies from arbitrary presidential action. In the 1935 decision known as Humphreys Executor, the court unanimously held that presidents cannot fire independent board members without cause. The decision ushered in an era of powerful independent federal agencies charged with regulating labor relations, employment discrimination, the airwaves and much else. But it has long rankled conservative legal theorists who argue the modern administrative state gets the Constitution all wrong because such agencies should answer to the president. The agency at the center of the case was also the FTC, a point cited by lower-court judges in the lawsuit filed by Slaughter. She has ping-ponged in and out of the job as the case worked its way through the courts. The FTC is a regulator created by Congress that enforces consumer protection measures and antitrust legislation. Its seats are typically comprised of three members of the presidents party and two from the opposing party.___ Associated Press writer Mark Sherman contributed to this report. APNEWS.COMSupreme Court lifts restrictions on LA immigration stops set after agents swept up US citizensImmigration agents conduct an operation at a car wash Aug. 15, 2025, in Montebello, Calif. (AP Photo/Gregory Bull, File)2025-09-08T15:37:26Z WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for federal agents to conduct sweeping immigration operations in Los Angeles, the latest victory for President Donald Trumps administration at the high court. The conservative majority lifted a restraining order from a judge who found that roving patrols were conducting indiscriminate arrests in LA. The order had barred agents from stopping people solely based on their race, language, job or location.Trumps Republican administration argued the order wrongly restricted agents carrying out its widespread crackdown on illegal immigration. U.S. District Judge Maame E. Frimpong in Los Angeles had found a mountain of evidence that enforcement tactics were violating the Constitution. The plaintiffs included U.S. citizens swept up in immigration stops. An appeals court had left Frimpongs ruling in place. The Supreme Courts 6-3 decision comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents also step up enforcement in Washington amid Trumps unprecedented federal takeover of the capital citys law enforcement and deployment of the National Guard. The lawsuit will now continue to unfold in California. It was filed by immigrant advocacy groups that accused Trumps administration of systematically targeting brown-skinned people during his administrations crackdown on illegal immigration in the Los Angeles area. In a stinging dissent joined by her two liberal colleagues, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote, Countless people in the Los Angeles area have been grabbed, thrown to the ground, and handcuffed simply because of their looks, their accents, and the fact they make a living by doing manual labor. Today, the Court needlessly subjects countless more to these exact same indignities.Department of Homeland Security attorneys have said immigration officers target people based on illegal presence in the U.S., not skin color, race or ethnicity. Even so, the Justice Department argued that the order wrongly restricted the factors that ICE agents can use when deciding who to stop. The Los Angeles region has been a battleground for the Trump administration after its hard-line immigration strategy spurred protests and the deployment of the National Guard and the Marines. The number of immigration raids in the LA area appeared to slow shortly after Frimpongs order came down in July, but recently they have become more frequent again, including an operation in which agents jumped out of the back of a rented box truck and made arrests at an LA Home Depot store. The plaintiffs argued that her order only prevents federal agents from making stops without reasonable suspicion, something that aligns with the Constitution and Supreme Court precedent. Numerous U.S. citizens and others who are lawfully present in this country have been subjected to significant intrusions on their liberty, the plaintiffs attorneys wrote. Many have been physically injured; at least two were taken to a holding facility. The Trump administration said the order is too restrictive, threatening agents with sanctions if the court disbelieves that they relied on additional factors in making any particular stop. Solicitor General D. John Sauer also argued the order cant stand under the high courts recent decision restricting universal injunctions, though the plaintiffs disagreed. The order from Frimpong, who was nominated by Democratic President Joe Biden, barred authorities from using factors like apparent race or ethnicity, speaking Spanish or English with an accent, presence at a location such as a tow yard or car wash, or someones occupation as the only basis for reasonable suspicion for detention. Its covered a combined population of nearly 20 million people, nearly half of whom identify as Hispanic or Latino.Plaintiffs included three detained immigrants and two U.S. citizens. One of the citizens was Los Angeles resident Brian Gavidia, who was shown in a June 13 video being seized by federal agents as he yelled, I was born here in the States. East LA, bro! Gavidia was released about 20 minutes later after showing agents his identification, as was another citizen stopped at a car wash, according to the lawsuit.___Associated Press writer Jaimie Ding in Los Angeles and Mark Sherman in Washington contributed to this report. ___Follow the APs coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court at https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court and immigration at https://apnews.com/hub/immigration. APNEWS.COMWarming seas threaten key phytoplankton species that fuels the food web, study findsFrancois Ribalet, a research associate professor at the University of Washington's School of Oceanography, holds a vial of Prochlorococcus on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, in Seattle. (AP Photo/Annika Hammerschlag)2025-09-08T15:44:59Z SEATTLE (AP) For decades, scientists believed Prochlorococcus, the smallest and most abundant phytoplankton on Earth, would thrive in a warmer world. But new research suggests the microscopic bacterium, which forms the foundation of the marine food web and helps regulate the planets climate, will decline sharply as seas heat up.A study published Monday in the journal Nature Microbiology found Prochlorococcus populations could shrink by as much as half in tropical oceans over the next 75 years if surface waters exceed about 82 degrees Fahrenheit (27.8 Celsius). Many tropical and subtropical sea surface temperatures are already trending above average and are projected to regularly surpass 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 Celsius) over that same period. These are keystone species very important ones, said Franois Ribalet, a research associate professor at the University of Washingtons School of Oceanography and the studys lead author. And when a keystone species decreases in abundance, it always has consequences on ecology and biodiversity. The food web is going to change. (AP Photo/Annika Hammerschlag) Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More These tiny organisms hold a vital role in ocean lifeProchlorococcus inhabit up to 75% of Earths sunlit surface waters and produce about one-fifth of the planets oxygen through photosynthesis. More crucially, Ribalet said, they convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into food at the base of the marine ecosystem. In the tropical ocean, nearly half of the food is produced by Prochlorococcus, he said. Hundreds of species rely on these guys.Though other forms of phytoplankton may move in and help compensate for the loss of oxygen and food, Ribalet cautioned they are not perfect substitutes. Evolution has made this very specific interaction, he said. Obviously, this is going to have an impact on this very unique system that has been established. The findings challenge decades of assumptions that Prochlorococcus would thrive as waters warmed. Those predictions, however, were based on limited data from lab cultures. For this study, Ribalet and his team tested water samples while traversing the Pacific over the course of a decade. Over 100 research cruises the equivalent of six trips around the globe they counted some 800 billion individual cells taken from samples at every kilometer. In his lab at the University of Washington, Ribalet demonstrated the SeaFlow, a box filled with tubes, wires and a piercing blue laser. The custom-built device continuously pulls in seawater, which allowed the team to count the microbes in real time. We have counted more Prochlorococcus than there are stars in the Milky Way, Ribalet said. The SeaFlow, a custom-built flow cytometer developed by University of Washington researchers, which uses lasers to detect Prochlorococcus, sits in a lab on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, in Seattle. And he said the results fit with what is known about the microbes streamlined genome, which makes it less adaptable to rapid environmental changes. Theyre at the very base of the food web, and they feed everything else the fish eat the things that eat the phytoplankton and we eat the fish, he said. When changes are being made to the planet that influence these particular organisms that are essentially feeding us, thats going to have big consequences. To test whether Prochlorococcus might evolve to withstand hotter conditions, Ribalets team modeled a hypothetical heat-tolerant strain but found that even those would not be enough to fully resist the warmest temperature if greenhouse emissions keep rising, Ribalet said. He stressed that the studys projections are conservative and dont account for the impacts of plastic pollution or other ecological stressors. We actually tried to put forth the best-case scenario, Ribalet said. In reality, things may be worse. The magnitude of the potential impact is kind of striking.Biller, Berube and Ribalet said that while other microbes may compensate somewhat, the broader risks to biodiversity and fisheries are real.We know what drives global warming. There is no debate among the scientific community, Ribalet said. We need to curb greenhouse gas emissions. He hopes the findings bring more attention to tropical oceans, which could serve as natural laboratories for warming adaptations and as early warning signals for ecological collapse. For the first time, I want to be wrong. WWW.404MEDIA.COInstagram Account Promotes Holocaust Denial T-Shirts to 400,000 FollowersAn Instagram account with almost 400,000 followers is promoting racist and antisemitic t-shirts, another sign that Meta is unable or unwilling to enforce its own policies against hate speech. 404 Media flagged the account to Meta as well as specific racist posts that violate its hate speech policies, but Meta didnt remove the account and the vast majority of its racist posts. The account posts a variety of memes that cover a wide range of topics, many of which are not hate speech and would not violate Metas policies, like the pizzagate conspiracy, 9/11, Jeffery Epstein, and criticism of Israel and mainstream news outlets like CNN and Fox News. If a user were to pick a post at random they might not even immediately identify the account as right-wing or extremist. For example, some memes posted by the account and shirts sold by the brand it promotes include messages criticizing Israel, the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC, and general distrust of the government.Other memes and shirts promoted by the account might confuse the average internet user, but people who are fluent in extremist online culture will clearly recognize them as antisemitic. For example, seemingly one of the more popular designs promoted by the channel is of a simple line drawing of hands clasping and the text Early life. On the store page for this design, which comes on t-shirts for $27.99, mugs for $15, and hoodies for $49.99, the description says: A totally normal design encouraging you to wash your hands definitely just about hygiene. Nothing symbolic here. Just good, clean habits taught very early in life.Early life refers to a common section of biographical Wikipedia articles that would state whether the person is Jewish. As Know Your Meme explains, this is a dog-whistle meme often used to spread antisemitic sentiments. The clasping hands are of the antisemitic drawing of the happy merchant.Another cryptic design promoted by the Instagram account is of a juice box with the text notice the juice and several seemingly random figures like 109% juice and available in 271,000 stores. These are also dog-whistles that other people who are swimming in hate speech would instantly understand. 109 refers to the claim that Jews have been expelled from that many countries, and 271,000 refers to the number Holocaust deniers often say is the real number of people who died in Nazi concentration camps. Another piece of text on the juice box is 6,000,000 artificial ingredients.Years of reporting on niche internet communities sadly means that Im familiar with all of these symbols and figures, but many of this accounts posts on Instagram are far less subtle and require no special knowledge to understand its hateful. A post on August 27, for example, shows a meme of actor William Dafoe holding the diary of Anne Frank with a subtitle saying you know, Im something of a fiction critic myself. Another design promoted on Instagram shows a man wearing a shirt with the text dont be a and a picture of a bundle of sticks, also known in Middle English as a fagot.Instagrams Community Standards on hateful conduct tells users to not post Harmful stereotypes [...] holocaust denial, or Content that describes or negatively targets people with slurs.Last year, Meta concluded an embarrassing and agonizing charade about its Holocaust denial policy. An Instagram user posted a Squidward-themed Holocaust denial meme. Upon initial review, Meta left this content up, the company said. Users kept flagging the post as hate speech and Facebook moderators kept assessing it as not violating Instagram policies. Users appealed this decision, which was picked up by Metas Oversight Board, a kind of supreme court for Metas moderation decisions. Upon further review, it determined the post did in fact violate its hate speech policy. The entire ordeal for removing the antisemitic Squidward meme took four years. Its an insane process but Im belaboring the point because while some of these shirts and posts might not quite cross the line, even Metas top sham court has made it extremely clear that this account violates its policies. Instagram just doesnt take action against it even after hundreds of posts and amassing a following of 400,000 people. Its also just one account I decided to cover today because it appeared to have monetized this content effectively, but Instagram served it to me as one of many racist posts I see daily.I sent Instagram the account promoting these shirts as well as several specific posts. Instagram only removed a couple of those specific posts, like the one calling Anne Franks book fiction. Instagram did not remove a post promoting the early life shirt. It also didnt remove a shirt with an image of Michael Jackson and the text (((They))) dont really care about us. Putting triple parentheses around they is an antisemitic symbol used to refer to Jews. The media, Hollywood, the machine they made hima a joke, a monster a meme. All because he spoke out about the ones youre not allowed to name, the text accompanying the post said. The t-shirt problem here is not unique to Instagram. On August 26 The Verge wrote a good piece about a different antisemitic shirt that was sold in a TikTok Shop, Amazon, and other online marketplaces. The piece correctly points out that the rise of print-on-demand and drop-shipping has created incentives for people, many of whom dont live in the U.S. and are not invested in any political outcomes here, to sell any image or text that is popular. This is why we see a lot of tiny ecommerce shops pivot from #1 Grandpa shirt one day to MAGA hats the next. They just sell whatever appears to be trending and often lift images from other sites without permission. The Instagram account promoting the juice box shirt is a little more involved than that. For one, as far as I can tell the designs are unique and originate on that account and the online store it promotes. Second, whoever is making these designs is clearly fluent in the type of hate speech they are monetizing. Finally, as The Verge article points out, these print-on-demand shirts are easy to set up so its not always clear if the shirts or hats these stores are offering are ever really produced. That is not the case with the company behind the juice box shirt, which shares pictures of customers who bought its stuff and tags them on Instagram. There are a few other juice box designs on the site, but the one I described above was removed sometime between May and August, before I reached out for comment. However, the design has since been swallowed up by this print-on-demand ecommerce machine, and is now available to buy from various sellers on Walmart, Amazon, and dozens of other online stores.I kept track of this Instagram account and store because it was particularly disgusting and because it found a way to monetize hate speech on Instagram. I decided to write about it today because The Verge story reminded me that while this practice is common, its very, very bad. But the reality is that this is just one of countless such accounts on Instagram. Unless Meta changes its enforcement methods I could write one of these every day until I die. That wouldnt be much of a life for me and not very interesting for you. We have become desensitized to the blatant dehumanization of entire groups online precisely because Instagram is putting it in front of our faces all the time. Occasionally, something snaps me out of this delirium and for a moment I can clearly see how bad this flood of hate speech is for all of us before I drown in it again.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 5 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMJared Polis refuses to say RFK Jr should resign & people are not happy: This is so weakOut Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) gave a runaround answer when MSNBCs Chris Hayes asked if he felt anti-vaccine Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. should resign. Polis supported his nomination earlier this year.I think the people calling for his resignation didnt vote for him in the first place, Polis said. And I obviously supported Joe Biden when he was running against RFK for president, proud of that, and then I supported Kamala Harris. Related RFK Jr yells at senator for asking about something he said last week: Youre being dishonest! He continued to ramble about how Democrats in general have a very different direction on health and also gave a full endorsement of vaccines, which Kennedy is painstakingly against. While he never said yes or no, it was clear he disagreed with certain aspects of Kennedys agenda but still supported him staying in the role of secretary of HHS. Im gonna take that as a no, he said, referring to his question to Polis on whether Kennedy should resign. Hayes: Do you think RFK JR should resign?Polis: pic.twitter.com/iOeFiR3JiU Acyn (@Acyn) September 6, 2025The exchange comes after Kennedytestifiedat what has widely been considered a trainwreck Senate Finance hearing, during which Kennedys anti-vaccine plans were raked over the coals by Democrats and Republicans alike.Kennedy has no background in medical science and is known for his wacky, anti-scientific approach to health, which includes opposition to vaccines and sunscreen, health interventions that have saved millions of lives. Kennedy himself has a history of poor health, which included a parasitic brain worm that resulted in mental fogginess and memory loss. The head of the health agency for the United States is actively standing before Congress and making things up, said out Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, who recentlyresigned from his leadership roleat the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) due to Kennedys mismanagement of public health. He did not tell the truth.Polis has voiced his approval of Kennedy since he was nominated to the HHS secretary role in November. At the time, Polis wrote on X that he was excited by Kennedys nomination. He helped us defeat vaccine mandates in Colorado in 2019 and will help make America healthy again by shaking up HHS and FDA. I hope he leans into personal choice on vaccines rather than bans (which I think are terrible, just like mandates) but what Im most optimistic about is taking on big pharma and the corporate ag oligopoly to improve our health. Polis cited what he believes is Kennedys support for capping prescription drug prices and reducing the use of pesticides in agriculture in his post.Polis then defended his position on CNN. Weve seen a lot of Cabinet appointments that are very dangerous and threatening to the country from the incoming president, but I always try to look at the glass as half full, he said, adding that Kennedy said some false and outright dangerous claims about vaccines and vaccines that have saved millions of lives but, at the same time, we have to remember [that during the presidents first term] he appointed a pharmaceutical lobbyist as the head of this agency, literally the fox guarding the hen house.I truly believe that RFK is not beholden to big pharma, Polis continued. I think hes an independent voice, and I think hes somebody who means what he says when he cares about reducing chronic disease through better nutrition If he focuses on that he can do some good for public health. Polis emphasized that he would strongly oppose any anti-vaccination efforts from Kennedy. Last week, Polis found himself the subject of constituent ire during an ask me anything Q&A he hosted on Reddit. The questions overwhelmingly centered on Polis support of Kennedy, the Colorado Sun reported, forcing Polis to explain himself dozens of times.Several people seem to think I am some kind of RFK fan-boy, he wrote. Obviously the media just loves anything about that guy, and because my message is more nuanced it attracts a lot of attention. I am FOR anything he, or any HHS Secretary, does to promote healthy nutrition and chronic disease prevention. I am AGAINST anything he or any HHS Secretary does that is based on pseudo-science, bad science, or casts aspersions on vaccinations. He added, I dont have very high expectations of the current President, and I highly doubt if he dumped RFK he would get someone who promotes healthy lifestyles and doesnt deny science. At one point, he also wrote, ok Ill say it here again, and anywhere, loudly and proudly: I AM AGAINST EUGENICS. After his appearance on MSNBC, many on social media voiced their anger. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMThe rights disdain for science is part of their strategy to attack LGBTQ peopleHealth and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.s appearance before the Senate last week was missing just one thing: a tinfoil hat. As a promulgator of deranged and dangerous theories about vaccines, Kennedy is so far out of the mainstreamthat Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) can call him a charlatan, and that seems more like a description than an insult.Even Republican senators are forced to take issue with him, with two senators who are physicians John Barrasso and Bill Cassidy offering up their heartfelt concerns that Kennedy is on track to kill Americans by restricting access to vaccines that are proven lifesavers. (Of course, thats been Kennedys crusade for years, which didnt stop either senator from voting to approve his nomination to HHS.) Related Donald Trumps ban on trans research shows that his ultimate goal is eradication The larger issue is that the Republican Party opposes science. While this is often couched as a distrust of science or in Kennedys case, skepticism it is in fact outright hostility to the reality of scientific data. Instead, the right presents an alternate scientific reality, where data doesnt matter, but conspiracies and ideology do, and which conveniently enough can be used against LGBTQ+ people. While all the attention last week was on vaccines, Kennedy has long trafficked in anti-trans and anti-gay medical lies. He has said that chemicals in water are turning kids trans. He has argued that HIV isnt caused by a virus but by popper use among gay men who were burning the candle at both ends. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today The right has long used pseudoscience to attack LGBTQ+ people. Activist Paul Cameron dressed up his attacks on homosexuality with such gems as a study that claimed that 17% of LGBTQ+ people enjoy consuming human feces. A Florida court once cited his bogus claim that children of gays and lesbians disproportionately experience emotional disturbance and sexual victimization as a reason to ban same-sex couples from adopting. The same kind of fake science is now being used to prove that trans people simply do not exist. The argument that there are only two biological sexes ignores the complex science of the brain, but it does conform to the ideological bias of the right. When you have a very prescribed view of the roles of the sexes men should be strong, women should have babies anything that contradicts it is easy to view as unscientific. Unfortunately, that plays into peoples vague feelings about trans people in sports.Of course, the right wants people to think as much because of gender roles. The same line of thinking is used to argue that womens IQ scores are more likely to be average, whereas mens show more genius,as Trumps choice to head the Bureau of Labor Statistics reportedly said.Republicans have been waging war against science from the White House for decades. It didnt start with Trump. George W. Bush made climate denialism a key component of his policy because he was an oilman. His White House hired people who promoted the idea that condoms werent effective. An entire book was written about how Bush subjugated science to ideology. The idea that Kennedy is just the end product of dissatisfaction with COVID restrictions is nonsense. The willingness of conservatives to put their faith in nonsensical nostrums is a long-standing issue. (Television preachers have been raking in bucks hawking all kinds of dubious products for years.)Their problem with science is that it presents facts, and they dont like the facts. Indeed, they are so opposed to them that the MAGA faithful are willing to risk their lives to make a point. Our problem is that they are also willing to risk our lives as well, or even destroy them, just to deny reality. The Republican Party today is intent on presenting a vision of America where reality is beside the point. The fake science and lies about real science are a strategy for a vision of America that is straighter, a throwback to the 1950s. You know, that time when polio actually was a threat to public health.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 4 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

(Corey Bullard/U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement via AP)2025-09-08T10:56:48Z SEOUL, South Korea (AP) South Koreas foreign minister departed for the U.S. on Monday to finalize steps for the return of several hundred South Korean workers detained in a massive immigration raid in Georgia, a spectacle that has caused confusion, shock and a sense of betrayal among many in the U.S.-allied nation. The Sept. 4 raid on a battery factory under construction at a sprawling Hyundai auto plant resulted in the detainment of 475 workers, more than 300 them South Koreans. Some were shown being shackled with chains around their hands, ankles and waists in video released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. His message today that he sent to the world was, Listen, our laws will be enforced, and were encouraging all companies who want to come to the United States and help our economy and employ people, that we encourage them to employ U.S. citizens and to bring people to our country that want to follow our laws and work here the right way, she said. AP AUDIO: South Koreans feel betrayed by workforce detentions at Georgia Hyundai plant Speaking with reporters, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says the Hyundai plant raid sends a clear signal. South Korean politicians roiled Appearing at a legislative hearing before his departure, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun called the raid a very serious matter that he hadnt anticipated at all, as many lawmakers lamented the American operation. (AP Photo/Lee Jin-man) Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More If U.S. authorities detain hundreds of Koreans in this manner, almost like a military operation, how can South Korean companies investing in the U.S. continue to invest properly in the future? said Cho Jeongsik, a lawmaker from the liberal governing Democratic Party. Another lawmaker, Kim Gi-hyeon from the conservative opposition People Power Party, said the unacceptable raid dealt South Korea a severe blow that will be difficult to heal. Some lawmakers even called for the government to retaliate by investigating Americans who are alleged to work illegally in South Korea. Seoul has expressed regret over the raid, but experts say it wont likely take any major tit-for-tat measures given the countrys security dependence on the U.S. in deterring potential North Korean aggressions and other spheres of cooperation between the two countries, including business ties. Many South Koreans are stunnedThe Trump administration has made a series of workplace raids to fulfill its mass deportation agenda, but this was the Homeland Security agencys largest yet at a single site, and targeted Georgia, a symbol of bilateral cooperation where many large South Korean businesses operate and plan future investments. Particularly stunning is that this raid came only weeks after South Korea promised to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into U.S. investments as part of a tariff deal, and days after Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held their first summit meeting in Washington on Aug. 25.The way that Trump is pressuring the Korean government and inflicting damages on its people is very rough and unilateral, said Kim Taewoo, former head of Seouls Korea Institute for National Unification. Can this be forgotten easily in South Korea? In a long-term perspective, it wont be good for U.S. national interests as well. In an editorial Monday, South Koreas biggest newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, wrote that Fundamental doubts emerge: What does the U.S. mean by alliance, and are investment benefits guaranteed across administrations? (Corey Bullard/U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement via AP) Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More Paik Wooyeal, a professor at Seouls Yonsei University said the U.S. goal of restoring manufacturing through foreign investments is colliding with its lack of visa and immigration systems that could support such an effort. South Korean companies operating in the U.S. will likely suffer a great confusion as they will now be forced to bring workers back home to resolve visa issues, he said. Such developments would undermine U.S. interests, but Trump wont likely make any concessions anytime soon, Paik predicted.South Koreans question US visa system Steven Schrank, the lead Georgia agent of Homeland Security Investigations, said Friday that some of the detained workers had illegally crossed the U.S. border, while others had entered legally but had expired visas or had entered on a visa waiver that prohibited them from working. But South Korean officials and experts have expressed frustration over what they call strict U.S. limits on visas for highly skilled foreign workers to protect its domestic workforce, and inaction on Seouls calls to expand work visas for skilled South Korean nationals. As a result, South Korean companies have been relying on short-term visitor visas or the Electronic System for Travel Authorization to send the workers they need to launch manufacturing facilities or handle other setup tasks. The incident will inevitably exacerbate shortages of skilled workers with legal work authorization and create pressure for increases in labor costs, potentially disrupting operations and rising costs across major business projects in the United States, South Koreas Eugene Investment & Securities said in a report Monday.Daishin Securities, meanwhile, predicted in a report that the raid could delay operations at the targeted battery plant, which was slated to begin production early next year, potentially affecting Hyundais EV business in America.During Mondays legislative hearing, Cho, the foreign minister, told lawmakers that the U.S. had not responded adequately to South Koreas requests to expand visas for its workers, and that Seoul plans to use this raid as an opportunity to move related negotiations forward.Cho said some of the people detained in Georgia may need to return to the site to complete their work at the factory, and that South Korean officials are negotiating to ensure they can reenter the United States.I will clearly point out to them that a delay in (the factorys) completion would also cause significant losses for the United States, Cho said. ____=Associated Press writer Jill Lawless in London contributed. APNEWS.COMHegseth and Caine visit Puerto Rico as US steps up military operations in the CaribbeanA demonstrator holds a sign that reads in Spanish, "No to the militarization of Puerto Rico" during a protest outside the Muiz Air National Guard Base in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025. (AP Photo/Alejandro Granadillo)2025-09-08T17:37:57Z SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Puerto Rico on Monday as the U.S. steps up its military operations against drug cartels in the Caribbean. The arrival comes more than a week after ships carrying hundreds of U.S. marines deployed to Puerto Rico for a training exercise.Puerto Ricos Gov. Jenniffer Gonzlez said Hegseth and Caine visited the U.S. territory to support those participating in the training. We thank President Trump and his administration for recognizing the strategic importance of Puerto Rico to U.S. national security and for their fight against drug cartels and the narco-dictator Nicols Maduro, Gonzlez said.Hegseth and Caine met with officials at the 156th Wing Muiz Air National Guard Base in Carolina, a city just east of the capital, San Juan. Gonzlez said Hegseth spoke to nearly 300 soldiers at the base and thanked those he described as American warriors for their work. The visit comes as the U.S. prepares to deploy 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico for operations targeting drug cartels, a person familiar with the planning said Saturday. The person spoke only on condition of anonymity because information about the deployments has not been made public. Tensions escalatingOn Sept. 2, Trump announced that the U.S. carried out a strike in the southern Caribbean against a vessel that had departed Venezuela and was suspected of carrying drugs. Eleven people were killed in the rare U.S. military operation in the Caribbean, with the president saying the vessel was operated by the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua. While the prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago praised the strike and said the U.S. should kill all drug traffickers violently, reaction from other Caribbean leaders was more subdued.Barbadian Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds recently told The Associated Press that members of Caricom, a regional trade bloc, sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio asking for an open line of communication on developments, saying they want to avoid being surprised by any U.S. moves against Venezuela.Meanwhile, Maduro on Friday vowed to defend Venezuelas sovereignty and urged Trump to engage in dialogue to avoid conflict. No to War The ongoing training of the Marines in Puerto Rico and the upcoming deployment of fighter jets have riled some in the U.S. territory, where the memories of the U.S. Navy using nearby islands as training ranges in the 1940s remains fresh, with the cleanup still ongoing. The April 1999 death of civilian security guard David Sanes Rodrguez then sparked large protests that eventually led to the U.S. military leaving the island. Rodrguez was killed after two 500-pound bombs were dropped near him as part of a training mission in Vieques. On Sunday, dozens of people gathered at the National Guard base in Carolina to decry the increase in U.S. military on the island. They held signs that said, No to War and No to military bases in P.R. Organizers also warned against the use of Puerto Rico as a staging ground for potential U.S. military actions in the region. We denounce the existence of military bases in Puerto Rico, said Sonia Santiago Hernndez, founder of Mothers Against War.Gonzlez has dismissed those concerns, saying that Puerto Rico is playing an important role in Trumps ongoing fight against drug trafficking since it represents a U.S. border in the Caribbean.Marines in Puerto RicoSiul Lpez, a spokesman for Puerto Ricos National Guard, told the AP that a group of Marines currently training on the island are not tied to the U.S. maritime force recently deployed to Caribbean waters. One thing has nothing to do with another, he said, adding that the training in Puerto Rico was pre-planned.Lpez said he did not know when exactly the training exercise in Puerto Rico was first planned but noted that such exercises are usually planned about a year in advance. He said the training began on Aug. 31 but that he does not know when it will end, nor how many Marines are involved. He said they are practicing amphibious maneuvers with a variety of vehicles.Meanwhile, Gonzlez said last week that she estimates more than 1,000 Marines were on the island. The U.S. Marine Corps issued a statement on Aug. 31 noting that marines and sailors from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit would be conducting amphibious training and flight operations in southern Puerto Rico. The challenging terrain and tropical climate of Puerto Rico provides an ideal environment for the 22nd MEU to conduct realistic amphibious training and hone specialized skills such as patrolling, reconnaissance and survival techniques, ensuring a high level of readiness while forward deployed, the Marine Corps said in a statement. It wasnt immediately clear how long Hegseth and Caine planned to stay in Puerto Rico, or if they planned to visit other sites while on the island.Lpez, the National Guards spokesman, declined to comment on specifics of the visit.___Associated Press reporter Will Weissert in Washington D.C. and AP videographer Alejandro Granadillo in San Juan, Puerto Rico contributed.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 3 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMThe president was sued for deleting radical LGBTQ+ webpages. He just lost.As part of a legal settlement with medical associations and advocacy groups, the current presidential administration has agreed to restore more than 100 websites and online resources related to gender identity and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).I am extremely proud of the health care community in Washington state and our partners in this case for pushing back on this egregious example of government overreach said Dr. John Bramhall, president of the Washington StateMedical Association (WSMA), the lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit. This was not a partisan issue-open data benefits everyone and ensuring its availability should be a bipartisan priority. Related Judge rules in favor of LGBTQ+ health researchers after HHS revoked funding for radical programs In January, the president issued an executive order directing federal agencies to eliminate references to gender and gender identity from federal policies, documents, and public-facing materials. In response, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) removed public health data from federal websites, including information on pregnancy risks, painkiller addiction, and the AIDS crisis. Hundreds of webpages addressing health concerns relevant to the LGBTQ+ community, including the National Institutes of Healths (NIH) HIV risk-reduction tool, were removed. This action proves the administrations goal of making it as difficult as possible for LGBTQ Americans to find federal resources or otherwise see ourselves reflected under his presidency, GLAADs President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in January. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Physicians, scientists, and other medical professionals who relied on these resources were left scrambling. The Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) and other groups filed suit, arguing that the removals were arbitrary, capricious, and unreasoned, and violated federal transparency laws. This was trusted health information that vanished in a blink of an eye-resources that, among other things, physicians rely on to manage patients health conditions and overall care, said Dr. Bramhall. Not only was our ability to provide care to our patients compromised, but our trust in our federal health institutions has also been badly shaken. As part of the agreed settlement finalized earlier this month, the government must restore these webpages and cease deleting other resources. Graham Short, a spokesperson for WSMA, told the Associated Press that the organization expects the websites to be fully restored in the coming weeks.Despite the settlement, HHS stated that it remains committed to its mission of removing radical gender and DEI ideology from federal programs, subject to applicable law, to ensure taxpayer dollars deliver meaningful results for the American people.Separately, in July, a judge overseeing a similar lawsuit brought by Doctors for America ordered the government to restore additional websites that were removed. The Associated Press reported that 167 of those sites had been reinstated, while 33 were still under reviewSubscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 3 مشاهدة 0 معاينة
