SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCrystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal: Gunners survive late scare to end title season with three more pointsArsenal enjoyed a Guard of Honor from Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, then dodged a disappointing finish to beat the Eagles 2-1 before lifting the Premier League Trophy on Sunday.WATCH — Crystal Palace v Arsenal trophy lift, full match replayGabriel Jesus and Noni Madueke scored on either side of halftime, then had to hold on after Yeremy Pino set up Jean-Philippe Mateta for 2-1 only to see his equalizer taken away for offside upon video review.Arsenal finish with a 26W-7D-5L record for 85 points off a plus-44 goal differential. That ended a 22-year wait to be Premier League champs again and the celebrations have been wild across north London, and the globe, over the past few days. But after this game Arsenal have the small matter of the UEFA Champions League final against PSG in Budapest next Saturday, so key players will be rested and Arteta will be praying for no injuries. Crystal Palace will also rest plenty of players as they head to Leipzig on Wednesday for their Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano. This will be Oliver Glasner's final home game in charge of Palace as he will leave this summer when his contract expires. If Palace win the Conference League then they're in the Europa League next season, and that is a wonderful parting gift for Glasner to give them. Crystal Palace team news, focusGlasner will look to keep the likes of Maxence Lacroix, Chris Richards, Adam Wharton, Ismaila Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta fresh and will likely make wholesale changes to his lineup as they aim to prepare for their Conference League final in the best possible way.Arsenal team news, focusThe Gunners will likely rotate as many players as they can to keep injuries to a minimum and give their star players a rest ahead of the Champions League final against PSG. Then after the full time whistle goes it's all about lifting the trophy and celebrating in front of their fans in the away end at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace vs Arsenal predictionThis is a really tough game to call because so many regulars will be resting, but go for a draw. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRavindra Jadeja mocks Shardul Thakur in wild IPL moment after dramatic no-ball twistThe final over of Rajasthan Royals’ innings against Mumbai Indians produced one of the most entertaining moments of IPL 2026, with old Chennai Super Kings teammates Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at the centre of the drama.RR were trying to push past the 200-run mark in a must-win clash when Shardul appeared to deliver a huge breakthrough. Bowling a slower delivery outside off, the pacer forced Jadeja into a mistimed slap towards cover. As soon as the catch was taken, Shardul erupted in celebration, roaring in delight and visibly pumped after thinking he had removed the dangerous all-rounder at a crucial moment.— IPL (@IPL) Jadeja, meanwhile, had already started walking back. But within seconds, the entire mood changed. The no-ball siren suddenly went off as replays showed Shardul had overstepped. The dismissal was overturned immediately, leaving the MI pacer stunned. Jadeja instantly turned around with a grin on his face while Shardul’s celebration awkwardly came to a halt. And that was only the beginning. With a free-hit now coming up, Jadeja made sure to punish his former CSK teammate in style. Shardul dropped short on the next delivery and Jadeja swivelled beautifully before smashing the pull over mid-wicket for four. The RR dugout erupted as the all-rounder stared back with a smile. The very next ball disappeared too.Shardul offered width outside off and Jadeja hammered a powerful drive through cover for another boundary. By then, the RR batter looked fully fired up and appeared to cheekily celebrate in Shardul’s direction, almost mocking the earlier wicket celebration after the dramatic no-ball twist.Fans instantly loved the moment because both players share a strong bond from their years together at Chennai Super Kings, where they were part of multiple successful campaigns. Their animated exchange clearly carried a playful edge rather than genuine hostility, but it still added spice to a tense contest.Jadeja eventually finished unbeaten on 19 off just 11 balls after arriving as an impact substitute at No. 9. His late cameo, combined with Jofra Archer’s explosive 15-ball 32 and useful contributions from Dhruv Jurel and Dasun Shanaka, powered Rajasthan Royals to 205 for 8.Shardul and Deepak Chahar picked up two wickets each for Mumbai Indians, but the final over belonged entirely to Jadeja, who turned embarrassment into entertainment within the space of three deliveries.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Manchester United want to sign Premier League midfielderReport: Manchester United want to sign Premier League midfielderManchester United Turn Attention to Alex Scott After Elliot Anderson BlowManchester United’s midfield rebuild appears to be taking a fresh direction after growing expectations that Elliot Anderson will instead complete a move to Manchester City this summer.According to TEAMtalk, United are already exploring alternatives and have internally discussed a move for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. The original report stated: “Manchester United look ready to admit defeat in the race to sign Elliot Anderson this summer, and have held talks over a deal to sign an alternative, according to TEAMtalk.”That feels like a significant moment in United’s summer planning.Midfield has become a priority area once again at Old Trafford, particularly with the demands of a longer campaign and Champions League football increasing the need for depth, quality and tactical flexibility.Alex Scott Fits Modern United RebuildScott has enjoyed an impressive campaign with AFC Bournemouth, developing into one of the Premier League’s most promising young midfielders.TEAMtalk highlighted that “Scott has been one of the standout performers in the Bournemouth squad this season,” and it is easy to understand why leading clubs are monitoring him closely.Technically gifted, energetic in possession and intelligent in tight spaces, Scott has the profile of a midfielder capable of thriving at elite level for years to come. His maiden England call-up further strengthened the sense that his development is accelerating rapidly.United reportedly view him as “a long-term investment to play in midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo.”That partnership alone would excite supporters.Mainoo already represents a major pillar of United’s future and Scott’s mobility and composure could complement him naturally. Modern midfield football increasingly demands players comfortable progressing the ball under pressure and contributing in multiple phases of play. Scott appears built for that environment.Photo IMAGOBournemouth Hold Strong PositionIf United want to move forward with this deal, Bournemouth are unlikely to make negotiations easy.TEAMtalk reported that the south coast club are determined to keep hold of Scott and have placed a £60 million valuation on the midfielder while also planning fresh contract discussions. That valuation reflects both Scott’s age and his growing importance. At 22, he already possesses significant Premier League experience while still having substantial room for development. Clubs do not easily part with players fitting that profile, especially when European qualification remains part of the ambition.United may also face the challenge of convincing Scott that Old Trafford currently represents the best environment for his progression. Bournemouth have provided stability, opportunity and tactical clarity, all valuable for a young midfielder continuing his rise.Carrick Searching for Midfield BalanceTEAMtalk made an interesting point when describing Scott as “a classic Man Utd signing.”There is logic to that comparison.Historically, Manchester United built dominant sides around elite young British talent capable of growing together over multiple seasons. Scott fits that tradition. He already understands Premier League football, carries technical quality and still has substantial upside. The report added: “A quality young player with a huge future, experience at the top level, and plenty of room to continue improve, Scott would be someone that Sir Alex Ferguson would have loved to have in his squad to mould into the next big thing.”Michael Carrick now faces the responsibility of shaping the next generation at Old Trafford. If Scott arrives alongside a more experienced midfielder, United could finally begin building a balanced midfield structure rather than relying on short term fixes.Photo IMAGOThere is also intrigue surrounding reports of a move for Ederson from Atalanta. Pairing experience with emerging talent would represent a more coherent strategy than United supporters have often witnessed in recent years. Our View – EPL Index AnalysisFor Manchester United supporters, Alex Scott feels like exactly the sort of signing the club should prioritise. Too many transfer windows have revolved around expensive short term solutions instead of building a sustainable core for the future.Scott offers something different. He already has Premier League experience, carries genuine technical quality and still has years of development ahead of him. Watching him alongside Kobbie Mainoo would immediately give supporters optimism about the long term direction of United’s midfield. The biggest positive is that Scott fits a football identity rather than simply a commercial profile. United need midfielders comfortable receiving possession under pressure, progressing attacks quickly and maintaining intensity across ninety minutes. Scott looks capable of all three.Naturally, the £60 million valuation creates hesitation. Bournemouth are under little pressure to sell and United supporters have seen the club overpay too often in previous markets. Recruitment discipline matters now more than ever.Still, if United are serious about rebuilding properly under Michael Carrick, targeting elite young talent with Premier League pedigree represents a far smarter route than chasing fading superstar names. Scott feels like a football signing rather than a marketing one, and that alone makes the link compelling.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNikola Jokić is the Most Unconventional Superstar in the NBAIn today’s NBA, flashiness often steals the spotlight. Athletic dunks go viral, social media personas build empires, and off-court drama fuels the narrative machine. Superstars chase headlines as aggressively as they chase rings, thriving off the publicity of signature shoes, brand deals, and podcast feuds. Then there’s Nikola Jokić.The three-time MVP and perennial triple-double machine does not seek any of it. The Serbian center does not posterize opponents with rim-rattling dunks or sprint the floor like a cheetah. He rarely grants viral interviews, stirs controversy, or demands the spotlight. Instead, he plays basketball at an otherworldly level, credits his teammates, and heads home, oftentimes to his horses, his family, and the life he has built in Denver. While others manufacture buzz, Jokić simply shows up, reads the game like a master tactician, and quietly dominates with efficiency. So why does one of the greatest players of his generation still feel so misunderstood?Quiet Consistency Over FlashFrom a purely statistical standpoint, Jokić’s dominance is undeniable. He routinely leads his team in points, rebounds, and assists. He accomplishes all of this with consistently excellent efficiency, and his basketball IQ enables him to see the game at a different level. Yet many NBA fans dismiss his play, often citing it as boring because he lacks speed and athleticism. He is constantly overlooked by the national media because he’s not flashy or loud. Jokić might not be sprinting down the floor, but he is surveying it like a chessboard. He relies on his creative post scoring, size, and ability to see the game three moves ahead of everyone else. While other stars might make SportsCenter with a poster dunk, Jokić makes the right pass, the proper cut, and the right read every time. In a league that often values image as much as impact, Jokić is a quiet disruptor.Loyalty in a League of Itinerant StarsWhat truly sets Jokić apart in 2026 is his unwavering loyalty to the Denver Nuggets and the city he has called home. In an era of player empowerment, superteams, and frequent trades, Jokić has repeatedly made it clear: he has no interest in leaving. In a recent interview on the Serbian X&O’s CHAT podcast, Jokić put it plainly when asked about imagining life with another team: “I wouldn’t like to imagine that. Even if we never win anything else, an organic title, it means more to me than anything.” He went on, saying, “I really found peace here…peace, home, I found my life here.”That word, “organic,” captures the essence of his 2023 championship run. Unlike many modern title teams assembled through aggressive roster-hopping or mid-season blockbusters, Denver’s ring was homegrown. Drafted by the Nuggets in the second round of the 2014 Draft, Jokić developed into a superstar. He elevated Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and a cast of role players through shared chemistry rather than imported talent. No forced superteam drama, no headline-grabbing ultimatums, just steady, team-first basketball that culminated in the franchise’s first title. In a league where loyalty stories are increasingly rare, Jokić’s commitment feels refreshing and almost radical. He values what they have built together more than chasing another ring in a bigger market or with flashier co-stars. His recent comments reaffirm that he would rather win (or compete) authentically in Denver than manufacture success elsewhere.Greatness Without the NoiseThe NBA has never been louder. Trade rumors, podcasts, social media beefs, and off-court storylines often overshadow the actual games. Jokić has opted out entirely. He avoids endorsements that would pull him into the spotlight, stays off social media, and lets his play do the talking. He gives credit to teammates instead of building personal brands. When the noise swirls, he simply goes home to his family, prioritizing what matters most to him. This modesty can read as indifference to some fans, but in reality, that’s just how he displays his focus and humility. It stands in refreshing contrast to louder personalities who dominate the conversation. This year, he has put up MVP-caliber numbers, posting 27.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 10.8 assists per game. Nevertheless, Jokić remains somewhat under-discussed nationally compared to stars in bigger markets.Denver’s head coach, David Adelman, has repeatedly praised Jokić’s approach this season, saying after one dominant performance: “He still made the right play all the time. He’s the best player in the world, bottom line.”Redefining the SuperstarPerhaps the real issue is not that Jokić is misunderstood. It is that our definition of “superstar” needs updating. If greatness means filling the box score, winning organically, elevating teammates, and staying loyal, then Jokić is the blueprint. In a league drowning in noise, Jokić’s quiet dominance might be his most powerful statement yet. He is not just winning games; he is reminding us what sustained greatness looks like when rooted in substance, not spectacle. And for Nuggets fans and basketball purists, that is worth celebrating. The post Nikola Jokić is the Most Unconventional Superstar in the NBA appeared first on The Lead.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSeahawks take Jordan Faison at No. 31 in CBS Sports’ 2027 mock draftIt’s not too early to predict who the Seattle Seahawks will select in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft. The 2026 NFL Draft came and went, with the Seahawks having selected Notre Dame running back Jadarian Price with the No. 32 overall pick. The Seahawks’ offseason program is now the focus this spring, and the attention that prospects are getting following rookie minicamps and heading into OTAs creates an atmosphere of excitement about the prospects that will be available for Seattle to take in next year’s draft.According to CBS Sports’ Mike Renner, the Seahawks address an anticipated need at wide receiver next offseason by selecting Notre Dame wide receiver Jordan Faison with the No. 31 overall pick in the draft next year.“It's unlikely that Cooper Kupp reaches the third year of the deal he signed last offseason, which could leave Seattle needing another receiver,” Renner said. “Jordan Faison'sprecise route-running would feast opposite Jaxon Smith-Njigba.”Faison recorded 640 receiving yards and four REC touchdowns in 2025 as a junior at Notre Dame. The Florida native also recorded 153 punt return yards on 15 returns last season. In the event that Seattle releases Kupp in 2027, Faison will be a wide receiver for the Seahawks to consider replacing him with in next year’s draft. This article originally appeared on Seahawks Wire: Seahawks take Notre Dame WR at No. 31 in CBS Sports’ 2027 mock draft0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMets star Juan Soto misses Sunday's game at Marlins because of an illnessMIAMI (AP) — New York Mets star slugger Juan Soto was a late lineup scratch against the Miami Marlins on Sunday because of an illness. Soto was in the original lineup and slotted to bat third as designated hitter. Instead, rookie outfielder A.J. Ewing will hit third with MJ Melendez replacing Soto as the designated hitter.“He’s been battling with it for the past three days and showed up with fever today, body aches. He didn’t have much sleep,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Hopefully, he recovers and we have a player for today.”The flu-like symptoms affecting Soto are not an isolated incident, Mendoza added.“There are a lot of people that for the past week have been dealing with this,” he said.Soto’s absence will create a huge hole in a lineup that scored only one run and had three hits in each of the first two games against Miami. The 27-year-old Soto has 10 home runs and an OPS of .949 in his second season with the Mets. New York already is missing star shortstop Francisco Lindor, who has been sidelined since April 22 because calf injury. Injuries also have sidelined regulars Francisco Alvarez, Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTottenham 1-0 Everton: Match Report & Instant Reaction | Insipid effort typifies Toffees seasonJake O'Brien battles for possession with Mathys Tel. (Getty Images) | Getty Images For Evertonians, it was nice to know that it was the other team who was in danger of relegation before a ball was kicked on the final day of this season. Our season had faded away in the home stretch but today, we could play a significant part in the demise of either Tottenham or West Ham. My personal preference was Spurs going down to humble the Londoners.Incredibly, this was the 10th year in a row that Everton finished the season with a trip to London. They arrived in London on a six game winless streak but it was Tottenham who was in an even bigger funk, with no wins in ten home games. Team NewsDavid Moyes made one change from last week with Thierno Barry in for Beto. Tottenham also made just one change as Djed Spence took the place of Randal Kolo Muani. Match ReportThe Spurs fans were up for it as the two teams walked onto the pitch and the noise was deafening. The Evertonians in the corner were doing their best to remind everyone that they were there as well. Michael Oliver was the man in the middle for this all important match and his whistle was hardly heard as the match got underway. Everton pushed forward and got an early corner to put the pressure on the Lilywhite nerves! It was defended well and breathing resumed. Spurs then pushed forward but their efforts were weak. Porro took a shot but KDH was there to block it. The first real chance fell to Gallagher when Keane and Pickford banged into each other but the shot hit the side netting.Everton were giving up the ball too easily as they struggled to keep hold of the ball. Spurs pushed and forced a corner. The corner deflected around but Danso lashed the ball well wide. Everton finally got the ball into the Spurs end and when Garner was fouled, the free kick was brutal and ended up being passed to the Spurs keeper.O’Brien was given a yellow for holding back Tel. Seamus Coleman, on the bench, ended up getting into a heated interaction with the Spurs bench. Spurs continued to apply pressure but Everton repelled the efforts. Udogie drove a ball across the six yard box but Pickford cleared it into safety. After a cooling break, Everton got on the ball but the final ball was missing. Iliman Ndiaye drove forward and passed four white shirts before having the ball clipped off his foot as he entered the box. The resulting corner had no final touch. Spurs counter attacked and another corner saw Danso get on the end of it but his effort was weak. Ndiaye and Barry worked a nice one two but Van de Ven broke it up. Porro then broke forward and it took a good block from Keane to deny Tel’s shot that was goalward. Merlin Rohl gave away a cheap free kick on the edge of the box. Porro’s free kick was nicely cleared by Pickford. Another corner for Spurs and the when Palhinha headed the ball onto the post, the rebound came back to him and he hit another shot which barely crossed the line but Michael Oliver pointed to the middle. Spurs were in ecstacy.Everton pushed for an equalizer and when Tarkowski was pushed down in the box, a VAR check gave nothing. The half ended and David Moyes had a half time talk which needed to wake up his players. Spurs had dominated and Everton had shown little. The second half was delayed as the linesman needed a new battery for his communication system. Spurs were determined to finish the game off and when Spence broke inside, somehow Pickford mishandled the ball and luckily squirmed wide of the post. Another poor free kick from Everton kept the shots on net at zero for the Blues. Everton were getting onto the ball again as Spurs were sitting back a bit. It was all sideways and backwards passing by Everton. VAR looked at a challenge on Palhinha by Garner but it was dismissed. O’Brien was then caught napping but he recovered to deny a chance from Tel. Harrison Armstrong and Tyrique George were brought on with Rohl and O’Brien being withdrawn. It happened as West Ham went up by a goal against Leeds. The Spurs fans were growing anxious as Everton pushed forward. A long throw from Garner was ineffective but Everton were starting to pressure the ball. Another corner from Garner was delivered into the chaos but no one was able to get onto it.Some nice holdup play by Barry was balanced by the poor foul he took to snuff out the move. Spurs took off Tel and Richarlison for Kolo-Muani and Sarr. Spurs were happy to keep us at arms length as Everton needed to score two goals to cause the Lilywhites any trouble. Spurs pushed forward and when Sarr went down easily, Oliver produced a yellow card for simulation. Archie Gray and James Maddison joined the fun with Gallagher and Bentancour departing. Coleman and Alcaraz were brought on for Beto and KDH. The best move of the half for Everton saw five players involved but when the crucial moment, George could not chip the keeper. It was all getting a bit tetchy as Spurs tried to waste time. Another Everton corner was fruitless as Spurs persisted. Tarkowski was given a yellow for a flailing arm as the last minute ticked on. West Ham had won by 3-0 but they were heading down if Everton could score two in the nine minutes of additional time.Sarr went down with a head injury and added two more minutes. When the match restarted, Keane’s header went narrowly over the Spurs goal. Everton pushed forward and when Coleman crossed a ball into the box, Alcaraz got his head on it but it went over the bar. Moments later, a goal bound shot by George needed a spectacular save from the Spurs keeper. It was the first shot on target for the Blues. They huffed and puffed but could not get another chance and Michael Oliver ended the season with his whistle.Everton’s Man of the MatchJames Garner: On a day when few players in blue turned up, Everton’s player of the season showed some of the quality and determination that will once again have him linked with other teams this summer. Let us agree that we need to keep this lad and lock him in for a long time. Instant ReactionAt the start of the season, there is no Evertonian who would have wanted another relegation fight. We had a season that build up our hopes and in the end we finished the season in 13th place. Today, it was nice to have someone else looking at their phones. We can continue the rebuild that has been underway with the Friedkin owners. Although there was nothing in the game for Everton, you would have thought that Moyes would have wanted to inspire his team to finish off the season with a bang, not a whimper. Once again, his substitutions were late and when they were made, there was an improvement in the attack, but it just wasn’t enough. We end the season with a big whimper with a seven game winless streak. Not good enough. With a last hurrah before the season ends, you would have to say that many teams fielded ‘experimental’ lineups. Throughout this season there has been a lot of talk about how Moyes has not given enough chances to the young players that were brought in last summer. At his press conference this week, David Moyes explicitly dismissed the idea of playing inexperienced youngsters in a high-pressure end-of-season fixture. Stating “I’m not turning up with a team of kids.” If I am the Friedkin Group I would wonder whether the investment we are making in the team is being appropriately managed. Finally, we are Evertonians and nothing comes easy it seems. We love this club and we always want more. What we can do is hope for a great summer and we will be back together soon enough. Thanks for taking your valuable time to read these match reports. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCarrick reacts to Bruno Fernandes’ history-making feat vs. BrightonCarrick reacts to Bruno Fernandes’ history-making feat vs. Brighton Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has hailed Bruno Fernandes after he made Premier League history in the victory against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.History makerUnited wrapped up the 2025/26 season in style, cruising to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.Patrick Dorgu broke the deadlock inside 32 minutes as he headed home a brilliant corner-kick delivery from Fernandes. The assist marked Fernandes’ 21st of the season. In doing so, he surpassed Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne to become the player with the most assists in a single Premier League campaign.Fernandes now stands on his own and is the top-flight’s undisputed assist king.Bryan Mbeumo doubled United’s advantage shortly before the break as he finished off a sensational team move.Fernandes resumed where he’d left off after the restart. Dorgu turned provider, returning the favour by setting up Fernandes, whose stunning finish drove the final nail into Brighton’s coffin.United fashioned numerous opportunities to pile on the goals, but they were consistently denied by an inspired Bart Verbruggen, who produced save after save.Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the final whistle, Carrick heaped praise on Fernandes.Carrick’s remarksThe United boss said on the skipper, “It’s what he’s done so often.”“The creating and scoring of goals is what he has that gift for. He has a natural instinct for creation and he did it again today.”Asked about the performance and the result, Carrick explained, “We’ve finished strong. We had a good run and third place was kind of confirmed so I like the way we finished from that and carried it on.”“We had a real focus that it wasn’t the end of the season, it was the next stage and today epitomised that with how well the boys approached the game.”He added, “These are one of the toughest teams to play if you are not there. Good mentality, good attitude and some top, top quality in our performance so there was a lot to enjoy.”“We were aiming high, you have to here. We wanted to finish as high as we could. Big credit to the players for how consistent they’ve been and level of performance. It gives us a platform to build on for next season.”Since Carrick took charge of United, he has won 12, drawn three and lost just two of the 17 Premier League games he has overseen.Featured image Steve Bardens via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMChelsea Are Among The Clubs Hoping To Sign This Aston Villa Star: Should The Blues Snap Him Up?Chelsea Are Among The Clubs Hoping To Sign This Aston Villa Star: Should The Blues Snap Him Up?In a recent segment with the United Stand, journalist Ben Jacobs mentioned that Chelsea are among the clubs hoping to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers. Jacobs said,“Chelsea and Manchester United are the two main clubs to watch for Morgan Rogers at the moment, and there’s a chance he could communicate where he wants to go before the World Cup.“A figure of £80m, maybe more if there’s a bidding war, is expected to be enough to sanction a sale.“PSG may also be one to watch. Arsenal are a bit put off by the price tag.”Rogers’ Impressive Form In English FootballRogers has enjoyed another impressive campaign at the West Midlands club as he has put in a series of productive displays for them in the final third. The 23-year-old has found the back of the net 14 times and secured 12 assists in 55 matches for Aston Villa this season across various competitions. The English sensation is currently one of the best playmakers in the Premier League. Hence, Chelsea would do well to win the race for his services in this upcoming transfer window.ISTANBUL, TURKEY – MAY 20: Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa looks on during the UEFA Europa League Final 2026 match between SC Freiburg and Aston Villa FC at Besiktas Park on May 20, 2026 in Istanbul, Turkey. (Photo by Maja Hitij/Getty Images)Should Chelsea Snap Rogers Up This Summer?Rogers is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the eye to play some decisive passes in and around the opponent’s penalty area. He can strike the ball with power from long range and can contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals up top.The English talent is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a winger on either flank if asked to do so by his manager. He is already quite familiar with the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at Chelsea. We can expect Rogers to bring more firepower to the West London club’s frontline. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge next season. At 23, Rogers has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a worthy target for the Blues to consider later this year. Therefore, Chelsea would be wise to try everything they can to snap him up at the end of this campaign.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWankhede goes numb as Rohit Sharma falls for duck in Mumbai Indians' last league matchNEW DELHI: On a day when all eyes were on two explosive openers - Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Mumbai Indians veteran Rohit Sharma - both batters failed to deliver at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After Mumbai Indians opted to bowl first, Rajasthan Royals suffered an early blow as Sooryavanshi departed for just four runs. Deepak Chahar provided the breakthrough, silencing the hype around the teenager in the must-win clash. The Wankhede crowd then waited for Rohit Sharma to respond with a trademark attacking knock, but the MI opener fell for a duck. After playing three dot balls, Rohit was dismissed by Jofra Archer in the opening over of Mumbai Indians’ innings.Archer bowled a full delivery around off that shaped away late. Rohit played down the wrong line, managed an outside edge, and Dhruv Jurel completed a sharp catch behind the stumps.— IPL (@IPL) The Wankhede crowd fell silent after Rohit’s dismissal.Rohit has featured in nine matches this season and scored 283 runs at an average of 35.37 while striking at 157.22.Archer, Jadeja power RR past 200Despite top-order failures, Rajasthan Royals managed to post 205 for eight on a batting-friendly surface, thanks to late fireworks from Jofra Archer and Ravindra Jadeja.Archer smashed 32 off just 15 balls, including three sixes and a four, while Jadeja remained unbeaten on 19 off 11 deliveries. The duo helped RR collect 73 runs in the final five overs to revive the innings after their specialist batters struggled to capitalise. With a playoff spot on the line, Rajasthan Royals needed a strong finish and Archer-Jadeja ensured the side crossed the 200-run mark.Sooryavanshi falls early despite positive startThe spotlight before the game was firmly on the explosive opening pair of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. While Sooryavanshi fell cheaply, Jaiswal looked promising during his brief stay before being deceived by Will Jacks.Interestingly, Sooryavanshi nearly began with a six. Attempting a big hit off the very first ball from Deepak Chahar, the youngster connected sweetly, but Will Jacks produced a sensational effort near the boundary ropes at deep extra cover to pull the ball back and save crucial runs. 1312940750 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM2-time NASCAR champion Kyle Busch receives tributes before and during the Indianapolis 500INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The tributes for Kyle Busch started before racing's biggest day of the year officially began. At Sunday's Indianapolis 500, Dale Coyne Racing changed the font of Romain Grosjean's No. 18 car to replicate the font the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and two-time Brickyard 400 winner used during his 14 seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing in his No. 18 car. Then came the opening prayer, in which Busch was mentioned by name. And on Lap 18, race officials lit up the scoring pylon next to pit lane with Busch's name, his birth year and 2026.Even with the pageantry of Indianapolis' big IndyCar race, Busch, who had more wins (234) than anyone across NASCAR’s three national series, was never far from the thoughts of people in the city that dubs itself the “Racing Capital of the World.” The father of two died Thursday at age 41 from what his family said was severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis.“It’s desperately sad. It’s also one of those things where you try not to think about it or let it in because you’ve got so much to do, you can’t let yourself get emotional,” Katherine Legge said Friday after returning to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “But honestly, racing has lost one of the greatest drivers, in my opinion, of all time. If you look back at the history and just — he was a legend.”As Indy held its biggest race of the year, those who knew or competed against Busch raced with a heavy heart.“How can you not be in shock over the situation?” two-time Indy winner Josef Newgarden said Friday. “I think it just puts into perspective how fragile life is. You just don’t know. Makes me think of his kids, to be honest with you. Gosh, I feel terrible about — I have two sons now. That’s the thing that breaks my heart.”___AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRapid Reaction: Northwestern rides fourth-quarter comeback to win NCAA ChampionshipThey say the third time’s a charm.Northwestern Lacrosse (18-3, 7-1 B1G) defeated the University of North Carolina (19-1, 10-0 ACC 14-11, using a 5-0 fourth quarter, clutch plays and players rising up to the ocassion to win its first national championship since 2023. The ‘Cats became the first team to win a title on its home turf since Maryland did it in 1986.Under partly cloudy skies that dried up the pregame rain, over 8,000 fans filled nearly every seat in the lakefront stadium, turning out in historic numbers. Both teams clearly fed off the raucous crowd with a contentious and physical battle on the field. Midwest Lacrosse showed up 📍 pic.twitter.com/1gYCJ8Zcol— Northwestern Lacrosse (@NULax) May 24, 2026Gabrielle McCollester was the MVP of this game, shattering her career-high with four goals. Aditi Foster and Taylor Lapointe each had hat tricks, while Madison Taylor had a game-high six assists. Abby LoCascio also netted two goals. Jenika Cuocco was resilient in goal, earning 11 saves. NU forced 19 turnovers from UNC. Northwestern got off to a hot start, with Madison Smith winning the draw for the ‘Cats. Mckenzie Brown powered down the field, and Northwestern held possession in the UNC fan for just under a minute before Lapointe triumphantly converted a cross-body shot past UNC’s Betty Nelson for the game’s first score. Right off the second draw, Taylor fought through to take control of the draw. Northwestern continued to put pressure on the Tar Heels with another extended period in the fan, and Lapointe doubled the ‘Cats’ lead just two minutes into the game, knocking down a Tar Heel defender and powering her way through the 8-meter arc.It felt as though the Wildcats could not lose momentum in the opening five minutes. After Northwestern won its third draw of the game, Maddie Epke found Kate Ratanaproeksa, but she could not convert on her shot. UNC regained control of the ball, but was stopped just a few yards into its attacking half after Jaylen Rosga cleaned up a ground ball. The Tar Heels’ zone defense seemed to fail itself over and over again. Foster ducked between gaps left by UNC and fired past Nelson to make the score 3-0 with 11:32 to go in the first quarter. Having little to say, North Carolina called a timeout. This place is rockin! 🔥Aditi Foster fires it to put the Lake Show up 3⃣-0⃣ pic.twitter.com/NGf6UB8W2a— Northwestern Lacrosse (@NULax) May 24, 2026Out of the break, the Tar Heels won their first draw control of the game. Mary Carroll quickly put a stop to any offensive ambition UNC had, however, as she checked the ball out of Kaleigh Harden’s hand and allowed Cuocco to keep the ball in Northwestern’s possession.UNC’s first two promising shots came from Eliza Osburn and Chloe Humphrey, who fired just wide of the net. Though Rosga won the ball back for the ‘Cats, a coach’s challenge from UNC put Lucy Munro in the penalty box and allowed UNC to take back its offensive momentum. Humphrey capitalized on the man-down opportunity, receiving the ball just outside of the fan and running through Northwestern’s defense to get on the board and make it a 3-1 Northwestern lead. The Heels continued to put pressure on NU, but the ‘Cats didn’t budge with their marking even as the Tar Heels fired three shots in the span of 34 seconds. A dangerous shot from Addison Pattillo almost got UNC back on the board, but Cuocco did well to interfere with her stick.Just seconds later, a great screen from Taylor allowed Foster on the right side of the UNC net to find Abby LoCascio, who released quickly to make Northwestern’s lead 4-1 with 6:14 to go. Munro then went down with a non-contact injury to her left leg and had to be escorted off the field. The play after, Osburn beat a Northwestern defender and streaked through the 8-meter arc to slam one past Cuocco. Osburn scored in an identical fashion 40 seconds later, leaving Northwestern with just a one-goal lead with 3:20 left in the first quarter. The back half of the first quarter saw Northwestern become a little flustered. At times, the ‘Cats seemed to struggle maintaining their poised zone system, and Cuocco had to clean up their messes with an incredible foot save. Northwestern finished the first 15 up 4-3, though it felt like it had lived 1,000 lives in the process. Kaleigh Harden’s massive check to Noel Cumberland in the North Carolina box started the second quarter off as a shock to Northwestern, and Cuocco had to make a quick save against Humphrey. Northwestern then surged into the UNC fan, and Ratanaproeksa won a free position for the ‘Cats. Her shot to the lower right corner, however, was unable to sneak past Nelson.Northwestern’s defense powered back to life thanks to a forced turnover by Ratanaproeksa with 11:41 to go in the second. Foster injected more life into the ‘Cats with an impressive run behind the Tar Heels’ net as she slung an underhanded shot past Nelson, making the game 5-3. Cuocco continued to provide a major boost to the ‘Cats as she got her fifth save on the day off a shot from Kiley Mottice. Northwestern kept its defense tight on the Tar Heels, but that wasn’t enough to stop Darcy Felter from scoring a no-look behind-the-back shot through traffic. With 8:42 remaining in the first half, the ‘Cats maintained a tight 5-4 lead. Osburn kept up the Tar Heels’ defensive pressure and picked a ball off Rosga to keep the ball in Northwestern’s defensive end. The ball made its way to Chloe Humphrey, who found Addison Pattillo. Pattillo was able to feint her way through the fan and fire a close-range shot at Cuocco, tying the game 5-5 with 6:50 to go.One minute later, Taylor snagged her second assist of the game as she found an unmarked Locascio coming behind the right post. With that pass, Taylor broke the career points record in the NCAA tournament. Madison Taylor 📈All-time record holder with 87 points in NCAA Tournament games. pic.twitter.com/8I0oZ6fZma— Northwestern Lacrosse (@NULax) May 24, 2026Though Northwestern did its best to keep its defensive restrained, a foul on Addison Pattillo allowed her to score off a free position, again leveling the game at 6-6. A subsequent linkup between Epke, Lapointe and Taylor almost got Taylor her first goal of the game, but her shot clinked off the left post. Epke tried to convert inside the fan just a minute later, but Nelson made a confident stop. The ‘Cats’ turnover woes began to catch up to them as the first half came to a close, and a nervy 2-on-1 Tar Heel play on the attack saw Northwestern on the defensive. Fortunately for the Wildcats, a Cuocco save and block allowed the game to remain level at 6-6 at halftime. After two quarters, Northwestern and UNC were head-to-head on draw controls (the ‘Cats had six to the Tar Heels’ seven), and each had seven turnovers. The ‘Cats tallied just 16 shots to UNC’s 21. Cuocco made seven saves to Nelson’s four.Bursting into the third quarter, North Carolina won its eighth draw of the game. A physical sequence of plays allowed Northwestern to regain possession of the ball off a Pattillo foul, but the ball ended up back in Tar Heel hands. Eva Ingrilli bounded around the net and tucked one under Cuocco, letting UNC get its first lead of the game at 7-6.In an instantaneous turnaround from the ‘Cats, Taylor heaved a ball to McCollester just outside of the crease, who rapidly fired past now Lexi Zenk to tie the game 7-7. But Pattillo responded just a minute later, getting a hat-trick and putting the Tar Heels at the advantage once again.A series of contentious foul calls, which left head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller visibly frustrated, led to UNC’s ninth goal of the game off a free position. Northwestern’s tight marking in the 8-meter arc began to taper off, and Caroline Godine exploited space left by the ‘Cats by finding Reese King to push UNC’s lead to three. The call, however, was overturned due to a crease violation by King, leaving the score as 9-7 Northwestern. Epke then capitalized on the overturned call, leaving a UNC defender in the dust to fire a shot that trickled into the bottom-right corner of the net past Zenk. The game, which a few minutes before, seemed to be out of Northwestern’s hands, then had the ‘Cats down just 9-8. Big Time Goal 🤩 pic.twitter.com/Bhezj1XZB6— Northwestern Lacrosse (@NULax) May 24, 2026With 6:36 to go, Northwestern let Eva Ingilli slip outside the crease completely unmarked. Ingilli then received a quick pass from Godine and easily put it in the back of the net, increasing UNC’s lead to 10-8.A silky smooth linkup between a behind-the-net Taylor, a top-of the 8-meter-arc-Epke and an unmarked McCollester outside the crease allowed McCollester to score her second of the game.Cuocco made a jaw-dropping save on a point-blank shot from Felter minutes later, keeping the ‘Cats alive for what felt like the millionth time. But Kate Levy and Humphrey got the better of Cuocco with 2:24 to go in the third quarter, maintaining UNC’s lead at 11-9, which held through the quarter’s close. Lapointe opened the fourth quarter for Northwestern with a last-second goal against the winding shot clock. Even as the ball tipped back and forth between halves and physicality ramped up between squads, Northwestern maintained possession For her third goal of the game, McCollester made an incredible solo run through the fan to absolutely slam one past Zenk. Her goal was the ninth of her career, meaning that at that point, a third of her career goals had come from this NCAA National Championship. She tied the game at 11-11. The lead was Northwestern’s first since halfway through the second quarter.Out of the media timeout, Charlotte Corkins won the draw for the Tar Heels, which set UNC up for a game-tying goal from Godine. Amonte Hiller then challenged the goal, and after three minutes of review, the call was overturned. With 6:37 to go, the ‘Cats maintained their 12-11 lead. For her sixth assist on the day, Taylor found McCollester standing completely unmarked outside the crease, increasing Northwestern’s lead 13-11 with 6:03 to go in the fourth. Northwestern then ran the clock down on UNC’s attack the next play, forcing the Tar Heels to release a last-second shot that went straight to Cuocco. The ‘Cats found themselves caught in a similar bind on the attack the next play, but Amonte Hiler called a Northwestern timeout.Out of the break, the Tar Heels ramped up their tempo on the attack, forcing Northwestern to make quick marking decisions. The ‘Cats handled it with grace, and they eventually got the ball up to Taylor, who held her position before streaking into the fan and grabbing her first goal of the game, pushing Northwestern up 14-11 with 1:18 to go in the game. It was at this point that Amonte Hiller, who usually doesn’t jump to conclusions, put her hands on her head. The players followed suit. Surely, and totally, Northwestern had won the national championship on its home turf, in a fashion a master screenplay writer couldn’t have done a better job of creating.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘We let the fans down’ – McFarlane after Chelsea let Europe slip on the final day‘We let the fans down’ – McFarlane after Chelsea let Europe slip on the final dayCalum McFarlane says Chelsea have let the fans down following their 2-1 defeat to Sunderland on the final day, which means they will have no European football next season.“The feeling in the dressing room is obviously disappointment,” interim head coach Calum McFarlane said after the game. “We wanted to make the best of a bad situation.” Chelsea’s defeat to Sunderland drew the curtain on a disappointing campaign for the west London club, a season in which the Blues lost as many games as they managed to win. When asked to sum up the season, McFarlane said: “Disappointing. We should be in the Champions League with the talent we have.“This group has shown that when they’re at their best they’re a match for anyone across Europe,” he added. McFarlane is in his second spell as interim head coach, and is the third man at the helm for the Blues this season following Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior’s respective dismissals. He is expected to join incoming head coach Xabi Alonso’s first-team coaching staff next year. “I’m looking forward to it, of course,” McFarlane said when asked about Alonso’s arrival and his new role. “Xabi is a top coach and I’ve enjoyed working with this group.” Wesley Fofana was given his marching orders in the 61st minute of the chaotic game against Sunderland, the 11th red card Chelsea have been shown this season. On discipline issues, McFarlane said “It’s definitely an issue and a problem. Arsenal didn’t have one red card and they won the league.“It’s something we need to look at and improve.” When asked if his players gave it their all this season, McFarlane replied: “I don’t think it’s fair for me to comment on the whole season, but I have no qualms or desire to question their mentality.“They gave us everything every single day. They can compete with anyone,” McFarlane said of his group. “We’re as disappointed as the fans. They’ve been brilliant this year. We’ve let them down.”0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

However, despite the obvious push by Fox (the Big Ten) and the countering pushback by ESPN (the SEC, which includes Texas football), Mandel asks, who would pay for expansion? From The Athletic: “For all the public shows of support, media consultants for the CFP only recently began modeling TV projections. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAmad put in his best performance of 2026 vs BrightonAmad put in his best performance of 2026 vs Brighton Manchester United swept Brighton & Hove Albion aside 3-0 in their final Premier League game of the season away at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.Patrick Dorgu opened the scoring from another Bruno Fernandes assist, while Bryan Mbeumo handed the visitors a two-nil lead heading into the break. In the second half, the Dane returned the favour to his skipper as the Portugal international rounded off the scoring. The Denmark international and the club captain will rightly take most of the credit for the Red Devils’ excellent end to the season, but Michael Carrick will be pleased with the performance put in by Amad.Amad registered his first assist of the yearThe Ivorian and Mason Mount combined to perfection, before the 23-year-old served it on a plate for Mbeumo to score United’s second of the day.It was the former Atalanta ace’s first assist of 2026, and a welcome return to form for a player who is among the very few to have struggled since Carrick’s arrival.stats via sofascoreAmad ended the game with an impressive pass completion rate of 91%, with 96% of his passes in the opposition half finding their target. He was not shot-shy, unlike in previous encounters, as he made the goalkeeper work with two decent attempts. His best performance under CarrickThe right winger completed one dribble and was rock solid without the ball as well, winning all his tackles and making two interceptions.Relentless on the counter-press, he recovered the ball on seven occasions (all stats via sofascore).Since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, the Ivory Coast international has looked a shadow of his former self.He has struggled to beat his man and has chosen to pass when there was an opportunity to shoot, which just highlighted that his confidence was shot to bits.Time for Amad to start performingWhy and how? Nobody knows, but an assist on the final day of the season will please both the head coach and the winger himself. There were murmurs that the 20-time English league champions should look to strengthen on the right given the struggles of Amad.Hopefully, he can use today’s performance as fuel and show up and start performing in pre-season to change the narrative around his future.Feature image Mike Hewitt via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCapitals beat KKR as IPL regular season concludes[Reuters]Delhi Capitals completed a 40-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders to move above their opponents in the final standings of the Indian Premier League.Having scored 203-5 in their innings, Capitals bowled out KKR for 163 to move sixth in the table.KKR had seen their play-off hopes snuffed out by Rajasthan Royals' victory over Mumbai Indians earlier in the day, and they were outplayed at Eden Gardens.Opener KL Rahul top-scored for Capitals with 60 from 30 balls, setting a platform that helped his side move past 200 having been put into bat.Ajinkya Rahane struck 63 from the top of the order in KKR's reply, but his dismissal started the first of two occasions where his side lost three wickets for one run.Kuldeep Yadav (3-29) had the KKR captain and Rinku Singh caught from consecutive deliveries, then saw Tejasvi Dahiya dropped by wicketkeeper Abishek Porel from the hat-trick ball.Axar Patel bowled Dahiya in the following over as the home side slipped from 128-3 to 129-6.More misery was to follow for the hosts as Rovman Powell was run out from the first ball of the 17th over, Anukul Roy was caught and bowled by Mitchell Starc from the second and Kartik Tyagi was caught off the fourth.Varun Chakravarthy was the last wicket to fall as Lungi Ngidi claimed figures of 3-27, with KKR seeing their final four wickets fall for nine runs as they lost inside 18.4 overs.Capitals' victory is the last match of the regular season with the top four in the table moving into the play-offs, which start with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Gujarat Titans on 26 May.Scorecard; Table[BBC]0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMChelsea miss out on Europe altogether after 2-1 defeat against SunderlandChelsea miss out on Europe altogether after 2-1 defeat against SunderlandChelsea have ended a nightmare campaign in the worst possible way as defeat to Sunderland confirmed that the Blues will miss out on European football next season. The Blues were already reeling from missing out on a top-five finish that could have sealed a place in the Champions League.Having already settled for a Europa League slot, Chelsea only needed to avoid defeat at the Stadium of Light to confirm their place in Europe for next season. However, Chelsea fell to a shocking 2-1 defeat that has helped Sunderland to secure European football for the first time since 1973.Sunderland produced an energetic and confident performance in front of their home crowd.Defender Trai Hume opened the scoring in the first half with an impressive volley that gave the hosts a deserved lead. Chelsea struggled to respond and looked short of ideas throughout much of the contest.Things became even worse for the visitors shortly after the break when Malo Gusto accidentally turned the ball into his own net, doubling Sunderland’s advantage and increasing the pressure on Chelsea. There was a brief moment of hope when Cole Palmer pulled a goal back for the Blues. The England international has endured one of his most difficult campaigns in a Chelsea shirt this season, but there has been an uptick in his performances in recent weeks. His 56th-minute strike against Sunderland was a sign of his late resurgence. However, Chelsea’s hopes of a comeback quickly faded after defender Wesley Fofana was sent off just six minutes after Palmer pulled one back for the Blues.Finishing the game with ten men means Chelsea couldn’t salvage a draw, meaning the Blues have now ended the season 10th on the log.Attention will now turn to incoming manager Xabi Alonso, who faces the difficult task of rebuilding the squad and restoring Chelsea’s competitive edge. While some may argue that a season without European football could allow the new manager plenty of time to rebuild the squad and imprint his tactical ideas, missing out on Europe is still a massive setback for a club of Chelsea’s stature. It could also lead to an upheaval at the club, with a few key players heavily linked with a summer exit.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRangers agree deal for Hearts captain ShanklandRangers have agreed a deal for Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, subject to a medical, which will take place in the coming days. The Scotland forward, 30, has been consistently linked with the Ibrox club and is set to become Danny Rohl's first summer signing.Shankland led Hearts to second place this season, with the Tynecastle side missing out on the title to Celtic on the final day. Since joining in 2022, the forward has scored 88 goals in 171 appearances. He has the fourth most goals in the Premiership since the league was established in 2013, with a league haul of 77 putting him one behind former Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos. In total, Shankland has scored 236 goals in 494 club games and four times in 18 Scotland matches.[BBC]Shankland moved to Hearts in 2022 after a year in Belgium with Beerschot. He previously played in his homeland with Aberdeen and Dundee United in the Premiership and Ayr United and Queen's Park in the lower leagues. He was also loaned out by Aberdeen to Dunfermline Athletic, Greenock Morton and St Mirren. His most recent Scotland goal came in the World Cup qualification-clinching win over Denmark in November and he was one of five strikers named in Steve Clarke's squad for this summer's finals. After the Scots face Curacao at Hampden on Saturday, they travel to the United States for a final warm-up game with Bolivia in New Jersey before Group C games with Haiti, Morocco and Brazil. The first two fixtures are in Massachusetts and the final group game takes place in Florida.World Cup quiz: Name every player in Scotland's squadRangers set for 'summer of change' as Cavenagh backs RohlAnalysis: Shankland the leader Rangers seekRangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh spoke last Sunday about the club's need for leaders, ideally Scottish leaders and gnarled professionals. He never mentioned Lawrence Shankland but almost didn't need to. The striker is everything he was describing. Rangers are not particularly lacking for goals - they outscored Celtic and Hearts in the Premiership in the season just gone - but they need steel and presence and Shankland provides that.It was evident on Friday that things were moving quickly. It's still not definite - there's still a medical to complete - but everything is heading rapidly in the right direction from a Rangers' perspective, if not from a Hearts point of view.Pending any departures he would join Youssef Chermiti, Ryan Naderi, Bojan Miovski and Danilo as Danny Rohl's options up front. It's unlikely that all of those will be Rangers players come the start of the season. Shankland, if it gets done, would be the main man.People with knowledge of the negotiations are being coy about what Rangers are paying Hearts for Shankland. Both sides are not comfortable talking about a supposed break clause in Shankland's Hearts contract that would allow him to leave for nothing, a scenario that would, no doubt, infuriate Hearts fans even further.Lawrence Shankland could join Rangers as captain James Tavernier leaves Ibrox [SNS]Losing their captain and principal scorer is bad enough but losing him for little or no money might be deemed insult added to injury. Right now, the phrases being used are 'undisclosed fee' and 'Rangers paid the required amount'.Shankland has a prolific record for Hearts against Rangers, scoring both in a 2-0 win at Ibrox in September, getting what turned out to be the winner against them in December and in May, both times at Tynecastle. He scored against Rangers in a 3-3 draw in May, 2024 and scored in a 3-1 loss and a 2-1 loss in November and October 2023. He's the most prolific scorer Hearts have had since the great John Robertson.Shankland netted 20 goals for Derek McInnes' team in their near-glory season, part of which he missed through injury. He's pushing hard to start for Scotland against Haiti in the opening game of the World Cup.For McInnes, this will come as a bitter blow. Shankland and Hearts were at a bit of a stand-off at the end of season 2024-25, a long-running dispute over salary between the club and the player's representatives threatening to see an end of him at Tynecastle. When McInnes was appointed manager, one of the main items on his list was to keep Shankland. He was insistent he needed the striker and a deal was done. McInnes and Shankland have worked excellently together. Those days would appear to be over. Shankland to Rangers will take a lot of beating as the signing of the summer.'Don't see how Hearts replace him'Former Hearts player Ryan Stevenson worries how the club will cope without their captain."Straight away, you're losing 20 to 30 goals a season if Shankland leaves," Stevenson told BBC Scotland. "You're losing your captain, who is pivotal on and off the park."One of Hearts' title rivals is potentially taking their best player. It's a bitter blow. They're going to somehow have to try to replace him and I just don't see how Hearts do that."They need to find solutions, maybe that's signing two players. They are going to have to put their money where their mouth is."Stevenson also feels Shankland could take the captain's armband for Rangers with James Tavernier departing Ibrox after 11 years."From Rangers' point of view, what a signing," he said. "I would be very surprised if he wasn't in with a shout of being Rangers captain too, with Tavernier leaving."I think he would score more goals for Rangers than he does for Hearts. If it goes through, it's a tremendous signing for Rangers."Have your say on Shankland's prospective move0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRams 13 personnel makes Davante Adams a regression candidate in 2026The Los Angeles Rams enter the 2026 season with expectations that are as high as they have been in years. After a deep playoff push and an aggressive offseason that included adding marquee talent on both sides of the football, the Rams appear built to contend for another NFC title. However, every season brings statistical regression somewhere on the roster. Not every player can replicate career-best production, especially on a team with shifting roles, evolving schemes, and a significantly tougher schedule ahead.Regression does not necessarily mean failure. In many cases, it simply means a player’s production may normalize after an exceptional season or because circumstances around them have changed. For the Rams, several key contributors could see their numbers dip in 2026 for a variety of reasons ranging from personnel usage to increased competition for snaps.1. Davante Adams, WRDavante Adams remains one of the most polished route runners and productive receivers of his generation, but the Rams’ offensive structure could naturally lower his overall statistical output in 2026. While Adams is still capable of producing at a high level, the Rams are expected to lean heavily into 13 personnel packages this season, which would place three tight ends on the field at once. That offensive approach could significantly reduce Adams’ snap volume compared to traditional three-receiver offenses. The Rams have invested heavily in their tight end room and appear committed to creating mismatches through heavier personnel groupings. That means fewer opportunities for Adams to dominate target share the way he has throughout much of his career especially while serving as the team’s #2 WR behind Puka Nacua.A hamstring injury also cost Adams time in 2025. Not to mention, when he was healthy, it seemed as though Adams lacked an extra gear.I may be willing to compromise and believe that Adams will actually have more yards in 2026 (~ 900) but will have less touchdowns (~ 9). 2. Kyren Williams, RBKyren Williams has been the heartbeat of the Rams’ backfield over the last two seasons, but 2026 could mark the beginning of a more balanced workload distribution. The biggest reason is the continued growth of Blake Corum in his second NFL season. The Rams have consistently praised Corum’s development, and the expectation around the league is that Los Angeles will move toward a near 50-50 split at running back this year. That alone would likely reduce Williams’ carries, total yards, and touchdown opportunities.Another factor is the presence of Jarquez Hunter, the Rams’ 2025 third-round pick. Hunter is the biggest running back on the roster and could carve out a meaningful short-yardage and goal-line role. If Hunter becomes the preferred power option near the end zone, Williams could see a noticeable decline in rushing touchdowns even if he remains the team’s most versatile back.Williams is still an incredibly valuable player because of his receiving ability and pass protection, but his overall numbers may regress simply because the Rams now have more depth and more reasons to spread touches across the backfield.3. Emmanuel Forbes, CBEmmanuel Forbes faces perhaps the clearest path toward regression because of changes to the Rams’ secondary. The additions of Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson have dramatically reshaped the cornerback depth chart.Forbes now projects more as a backup corner or rotational defensive back rather than a full-time starter. At best, he may primarily see action in dime packages or specialized passing situations. That reduction in playing time naturally limits opportunities for impact plays such as interceptions, pass breakups, and tackles. While Forbes still possesses intriguing ball skills and athleticism, consistency has remained a concern throughout his young NFL career. The Rams adding two established contributors at cornerback suggests they may no longer view Forbes as someone ready for a major every-down role. With fewer snaps likely coming his way, statistical regression feels almost inevitable in 2026.4. Davis Allen, TEDavis Allen is another player who could see diminished production because of overwhelming competition within his position group. The Rams suddenly possess one of the deepest tight end rooms in football, and that creates a difficult path toward meaningful targets.Tyler Higbee is healthy and returning for another season, giving the Rams a trusted veteran presence. Terrance Ferguson is viewed internally as a promising young player with substantial upside entering year two. Meanwhile, Colby Parkinson arguably looks like the best all-around tight end on the roster entering training camp.As if that were not enough competition already, the Rams also drafted Max Klare in April as another developmental piece they clearly want to groom for the future. With so many bodies competing for snaps and targets, Allen may struggle to consistently stay involved offensively. Even if the Rams utilize heavy tight end packages frequently, there are simply too many mouths to feed for Allen to maintain or improve upon previous production.5. Matthew StaffordTake a breath. Hear me out. Matthew Stafford is coming off one of the finest seasons of his career, throwing 46 touchdowns against just eight interceptions in 2025. Replicating those numbers would be difficult for any quarterback, regardless of talent level. Matthew Stafford is still Matthew Stafford though. The Rams are also expected to face a far more difficult schedule in 2026, with stronger opposing defenses and more high-level playoff contenders on the slate. That alone could lead to natural statistical decline. Defenses will also spend the offseason studying how to slow down a Rams offense that was among the league’s most explosive units last year.It is important to emphasize that regression for Stafford does not mean he is headed for a poor season. A drop from 46 touchdowns to the mid-30s would still represent excellent quarterback play. However, expecting another near-flawless touchdown-to-interception ratio while navigating a more challenging schedule may simply be unrealistic. The Rams can still remain one of the NFC’s elite teams even if Stafford’s numbers come back down slightly. In fact, a more balanced offense featuring heavier personnel groupings and a stronger running back rotation may actually benefit the team overall, even if it results in statistical regression for several individual players.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow West Ham can cleanse themselves after damning Premier League relegationBilled as a final day that could produce one of the biggest shocks in English football history, it was all too painfully predictable for West Ham. They required something of a miracle to retain their top-flight status - wins on two north London fronts, situated within five miles of each other. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side completed their part of the assignment. But at no point on this sweltering Sunday afternoon were West Ham out of the drop zone, let alone within less than two points of safety.West Ham kept up an impressive record as final-day specialists; they’ve only lost one of their last 20 curtain-closers in the Premier League, which fittingly came on the last time they were relegated in 2010/11. It wasn’t enough to save them. West Ham were relegated on the final day of the Premier League season (Getty)Jarrod Bowen knew that as he drilled in his side’s second of the afternoon on 79 minutes, tempering his celebrations and showing no sign of a smile. The closest thing to a ‘Mr West Ham’ since Mark Noble’s retirement, that could easily be the captain’s farewell contribution, later seen wiping a tear from his eye before a stoppage-time corner. He won’t be alone in the departure bay either; rare bright spark Crysencio Summerville, player of the year Konstantinos Mavropanos, Mateus Fernandes and more will be expected to seek moves above the Championship. Callum Wilson, who lashed in a late and inconsequential third, saluted to the crowd as he turned back towards halfway - that could be interpreted as a goodbye. Their XI will be unrecognisable to the one that started and was relegated here.Jarrod Bowen may have played his last minutes for West Ham (Reuters)And in the dugout, Nuno is unclear if he’ll go down with the ship. “Through this final end of the season, none of us had a minute to think about individual future,” he said, insisting that the fans “will know” his situation but at a different time. “Today it's not about this. It's about understanding how tough it [relegation] is.”Rarely does a 3-0 win come with such dejection. “I need to say commiserations to West Ham,” said Leeds boss Daniel Farke. “It was a strange atmosphere today.” But there was no shock to this sadness. West Ham fans were left dejected but there was little shock to the outcome (Getty)While Tottenham fans had turned insomniacs at the prospect of a humiliating and historic drop, Hammers felt more at peace with the fact such an outcome was far more probable for them. Ahead of kick-off, this writer was caught in a lift with a few home supporters heading to the London Stadium nosebleeds when one joked: “Glad we’re going up for a change.” Another replied: “That’s next year, mate.”So much was the expectation of failure, there was hardly a noticeable reaction inside the ground when Spurs went 1-0 up over Everton towards the end of the first half. It almost felt irrelevant because at that time, West Ham were showing little sign that they could get their own job done. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha both had glorious chances to end the hosts’ survival fight long before Taty Castellanos headed in his 67th-minute opener. The end result flattered them, having entered half-time to a chorus of boos.West Ham salvaged the performance after the restart, removing the players from the firing line and leaving just one familiar target of resentment. Fans used their final minutes of Premier League status to protest the ownership. “David Sullivan, we’re coming for you” was one of a catalogue of chants, some of which cannot be lawfully published.Relegation will intensify the already-boiling scrutiny directed at West Ham’s powers at be. The end of their 14-year stint in the Premier League - which was the second-longest outside of the traditional big six - could be seen as the perfect opportunity for fans to cleanse their club. Karren Brady is already gone; that’s one much-maligned figure down. Such a damning blow may now usher in even more desired change.West Ham fans used their final Premier League to protest the ownership (Getty)However, not everything wrong with West Ham can necessarily be righted. The London Stadium is here to stay and will become far and away the biggest ground in the Championship, eclipsing the Riverside Stadium by double its capacity. It doesn’t suit the second-tier; a bit like how it doesn’t suit West Ham and doesn’t suit football.Fans belted “you sold our soul for this s***hole” towards the directors’ box as their fate neared. Many will point towards their move from Upton Park exactly a decade ago as the beginning of the club’s decline, despite claiming European glory since then. The architect of that night in Prague, David Moyes, was unable to do one more big favour for his former side in N17. His 2023 exploits will therefore remain his greatest in this West Ham era, one which now seems to be coming to an end.West Ham appear to be beckoning on a new era after being condemned to relegation (Reuters)Leicester’s collapse’s fresh in the mind, there are enough cautionary tales of how not to deal with the drop. West Ham will strive to do the opposite and bounce back up. Their recruitment will be tested; an overhaul in personnel feels imminent. But there is something about a Championship return to look forward to for these fans. Still with their voice as the match entered the final seconds, one chant reminded us that perhaps England’s fiercest football rivalry is about to be reignited. “Millwall away, ole ole.”0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIPL 2026 | 'We still want to compete and win': KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane during toss vs DCNEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to field first against Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2026 clash at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday."We will bowl first. It’s pretty simple. We know the scenario depending on what’s going to happen in the previous game, which is happening right now. But regardless of that, we don’t know what the result will be," Ajinkya Rahane said at the toss."Also, the wicket looks really good. So yes, it’s very simple. It’s still a game of cricket to be played, and the last six games have been fantastic for us. We still want to compete and win this game. As I said, we don’t know what’s going to happen, but whenever you play a game of cricket, you always look to win. Really proud of the unit, especially because it’s not easy to come back from the situation we were in. It takes courage, character, and attitude to bounce back as a team. IPL is a funny tournament with 24–25 players and support staff, maintaining that atmosphere, intensity and carrying it forward every time is fantastic. So yes, I’m really proud of each and every one. Same team," he added.Delhi Capitals have already been eliminated from IPL 2026."Yes, obviously I would have bowled first because, the way this tournament has gone, we’ve done well while chasing. So yes, looking at that, we would’ve bowled first. But it’s not bad because the wicket looks good and even if we look ahead to next year, though that’s still far away, if we bat first, our batsmen will get an opportunity to understand how to approach batting first as well. No, I don’t think we should see it like a bad dream," Axar Patel said.— IPL (@IPL) "Obviously, there’s a lot of reflection and thought about what we could’ve done better or changed. But honestly, I don’t think we played bad cricket. I’d say we were unfortunate at crucial moments, we dropped catches at key times. Cricket is like that, when opportunities come, if you don’t grab them, you fall behind. Those opportunities were ours, and the mistakes were ours too. So I think we should learn from them and move forward. Sometimes when you’re winning, even if you make small mistakes, they get ignored because you don’t focus too much on them. But when those same small moments hurt you badly, then you realize that if we hadn’t made those mistakes, we could’ve been in a completely different position. But that’s cricket, after every season, there are always regrets. What matters is whether you executed the plans your team made. If the answer is yes, then I think you should move on and look ahead," Axar said.KKR’s playoff hopes are still alive and depend entirely on the result of the Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals match being played simultaneously at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. If Rajasthan Royals win, they will secure the fourth and final playoff spot, knocking KKR out of the tournament. However, if Mumbai Indians manage to beat Rajasthan Royals, then the KKR vs DC clash will effectively become a knockout contest. Even then, KKR will need a massive victory margin over Delhi Capitals to stay alive in the playoff race.Playing XIs:Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): Abishek Porel, KL Rahul(w), Sahil Parakh, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Axar Patel(c), Ashutosh Sharma, Madhav Tiwari, Auqib Nabi Dar, Mitchell Starc, Lungi NgidiKolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI): Ajinkya Rahane(c), Manish Pandey, Cameron Green, Rovman Powell, Rinku Singh, Tejasvi Dahiya(w), Anukul Roy, Sunil Narine, Saurabh Dubey, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kartik TyagiHere are the Impact substitutes for both the teams:Kolkata Knight Riders Impact subs: Finn Allen, Sarthak Ranjan, Vaibhav Arora, Ramandeep Singh, Rahul TripathiDelhi Capitals Impact subs: Tripurana Vijay, Sameer Rizvi, Vipraj Nigam, Nitish Rana, Kuldeep Yadav0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

Pep Guardiola fights back tears and says goodbye as Man City fans implore him to stay 10 more yearsMANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola fought back tears on the sideline as he brought 10 years at Manchester City to an end on Sunday. His final game ended in a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on a day charged with emotion as he said goodbye to the fans he gave so much joy during a decade of dominance in English soccer. “I never could have imagined the amount of love I've found,” said Guardiola, standing in the center of the field at the Etihad Stadium and addressing the crowd. “It is an incredible, tremendous honor to be your manager, to be here 10 years.”The tears started long before the final whistle, with Guardiola welling up and rubbing his eyes as two of his most loyal servants, Bernardo Silva and John Stones, also said farewell and were given guards of honor when substituted in the second half. Then it was his turn to receive a guard of honor of his own. “This is the man who changed everything,” the stadium announcer said as Guardiola ran onto the field wearing khakis and a cream T-shirt, with fans cheering wildly. “10 more years," they chanted, prompting Guardiola to shake his head in defiance. After 17 major trophies and records galore, on Friday he confirmed he could do no more. After turning City into the most dominant Premier League team of its generation and a champion of Europe for the first time, he said the time was right to hand over the reins. Guardiola's dayFormer Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, who won the Club World Cup last year, is favorite to take over with an announcement possibly this week. But that is for another day. This day was about Guardiola and the chance for supporters to show their appreciation. “He means everything to me and this club. It’s absolutely brilliant what he’s done for it,” City fan Fred Taylor, 82, told The Associated Press. “I can’t think of another manager that’s done what he’s done in the 10-year period he’s been here.”Guardiola joined City in the summer of 2016 and has led the Abu Dhabi-owned team to six Premier League titles and a first Champions League crown in 2023.“That's what we always wanted that ... we’d never done it,” said Taylor. “That was probably the highlight of his tenure.”Guardiola's trophy haul included a domestic double this season of the English League Cup and the FA Cup. He led City to the treble in 2023, winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup — matching Manchester United’s feat from more than 20 years earlier in 1999.First to 100 pointsThere were other benchmarks. City became the first team to win four straight English leagues and the first to amass 100 points in a single season in 2018. The following year City was the first team to win the domestic treble of the league, FA Cup and League Cup in the same season.More than just trophies, Guardiola has connected with City fans, telling them Sunday to hug him if they ever see him in the future, saying “I will need it.”“It’s hard to describe, it’s someone you don’t actually know, but you feel like you do know,” City fan Richard Wilbourn said. "When I heard the news (he was leaving) I got a bit emotional. What he’s done for the club has been absolutely unreal, and it’s something that we’ve never seen in our lifetime.“Growing up through my mid-20s to mid-30s (he's been) a massive part of my life.” City has honored Guardiola by naming its newly developed north stand after him. He will also take up a role as global ambassador.“I’m sad he’s leaving, but I think he’s leaving at the right time,” said Taylor. “He’s done everything and he can’t go any further in this club, but I think he’s done brilliant and I wish him all the best.”___James Robson is at https://x.com/jamesalanrobson___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

It was an open game, just as we expected, and the girls gave it their all. We have no regrets, we played it out to the very end. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWNBA rescinds Paige Bueckers’ technical foul from the Atlanta gameNEW YORK (AP) — Paige Bueckers was happy her technical foul from Friday night’s game against Atlanta was rescinded by the league on Sunday. Not only did it save her the $500 fine, but more importantly it kept her with none for the season which was important for her “bet” with Dallas teammate Alysha Clark. The two have a friendly wager that Bueckers wouldn't get one this season. "I'm glad to get that one back," Bueckers said smiling before the Dallas Wings faced New York.Bueckers was given the technical foul as her team was rallying against Atlanta and the second-year player was clapping aggressively. She was astonished to learn that she had received a technical for it.“I was hyped and showing passion and joy and I got penalized for that,” Bueckers said at practice on Saturday.Bueckers then joked that she would have done a lot more if she knew that was going to earn her a tech. The former UConn great went on to say that she understands that officials have a hard job.“I know they’re putting an emphasis on controlling the game more, not letting it get to be a bloodbath as much as it was last year,” she said. “So I feel like they’re putting an emphasis on that this season.”Clark said that she helped Bueckers get it rescinded“I gave her a little something to send in with it,” Clark said. “I just felt it wasn’t warranted. If I’m going to win money out of her I want it to be legit. I want to be able to sleep at night. I don’t want that it’s not deserving to get her money.”Bueckers hopes that officials can let players show their competitive side in games. “See that we were down a ton and we’re making a run, so we’re obviously going to be hyped up and showing a bunch of passion and joy and fire, like, that’s what basketball’s all about,” Bueckers said.Asked if she ever would want to officiate, Bueckers smiled and said no.“I would never want to be a ref. It’s a really extremely hard job. and they get criticized just as much as the players,” she said. “So, it’s tough to manage some times.”___AP WNBA: https://apnews.com/hub/wnba-basketball0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNorthwestern beats North Carolina 14-11 for its 9th women's lacrosse national championshipEVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Freshman Gabriella McCollester scored a career-high four goals, Taylor Lapointe and Aditi Foster both scored a hat trick, and Madison Taylor recorded seven points for No. 1 Northwestern in a 14-11 win over No. 2 North Carolina in the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse national championship. McCollester, who entered the game after senior attacker Lucy Munro left the game in the first quarter with an injury, scored all four goals in the second half. Taylor, a Tewaaraton Award finalist for best women's lacrosse player in the country, recorded six assists and the final goal of the game for the Wildcats, who clinched their 9th title. They are the first team to win a national championship on their home field since 1984.Lapointe scored the first two goals of the game in the first two minutes, and Foster added another, forcing a North Carolina timeout five minutes into the game. The score was 6-6 going into halftime. After the break, North Carolina went on a 3-1 run to take its first lead of the game. Chloe Humphrey, who won the Tewaaraton Award last season, scored her 109th goal of the season, tying the Division I single-season record. McCollester's hat-trick goal tied the game at 11 in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats scored five unanswered goals in the final quarter, shutting out the Tar Heels for the last 15 minutes of the game. Northwestern goalie Jenicka Cuocco made 11 saves on 22 shots. Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller has coached the Wildcats since 2005, when she revived the program. With her 9th title, she is the all-time winningest coach in the Division I national championship game. —— AP college sports: https://apnews.com/hub/college-sports0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHurricanes, Canadiens take 1-1 series in the Eastern Conference Final to Canada for Monday's Game 3RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Rod Brind'Amour didn't see a need to juggle his lineup or massively adjust the scheme after an ugly first period cost the Carolina Hurricanes any chance to win their Eastern Conference Final opener. No, the issue was as simple as getting to their game, with the precision and edge they had shown in sweeping through the first two playoff rounds.Following that approach got the Eastern Conference's top seed back into their series against the Montreal Canadiens as play moves to Canada for Monday's Game 3. And it offers the roadmap entering what is now a best-of-five series for a trip to the Stanley Cup Final.“We just tried to keep it real after Game 1: We needed a better effort,” defenseman K'Andre Miller said Sunday.“We know how we can play Hurricane hockey and we know we're at our best when we can get to our game. So I think it was just a matter of looking (at) the man in the mirror and bringing your best effort for Game 2.”The Canadiens won Game 1 by jumping on a team coming off an 11-day break — the longest wait to start a series in more than a century — scoring four goals in the opening 11 1/2 minutes. Montreal repeatedly got loose for clean breakouts and breakaways against Frederik Andersen in that one.The lone positive from that game was the Hurricanes played more of their preferred style in the second period. Otherwise, Brind’Amour said they needed to toss it and move on, even saying the team wouldn’t go through an on-ice practice.“It’s not what we need,” he said Friday.Carolina responded Saturday night by looking closer to its previous playoff form with its aggressive forecheck, controlling the puck in the offensive zone and winning battles along the boards to minimize the chances going the other way. The Hurricanes held the Canadiens to 12 shots on goal while surrendering far fewer unchecked sprints through the neutral zone that led to such Game 1 trouble.“I think all the way through it was more Carolina Hurricane hockey in Game 2 and we'll try to keep building on that,” captain Jordan Staal said. Then there is the pressure to break through to the Stanley Cup Final in Carolina's third Eastern final in four years and fourth in the current eight-year postseason run under Brind'Amour. Carolina was swept in this round against Boston in 2019 and Florida in 2023, then fell in five games in last year’s rematch with the Panthers. The Hurricanes were 1-13 under Brind’Amour in the Eastern Conference Final before winning Game 2 on Nikolaj Ehlers’ overtime goal. And the franchise's struggles in this round go back even to Brind'Amour's playing days in a 2009 sweep against Pittsburgh, with Carolina losing 10 straight home conference-final games since beating Buffalo in Game 7 on the way to hoisting the Cup in 2006 with Brind'Amour as captain. This is the first time the Hurricanes haven't found themselves in an 0-2 hole in this round since that year, too.Brind'Amour dismissed talk of past struggles by noting “there's too much to worry about right now” with corralling the young and fearless Canadiens.“Right now it's so day-to-day focused, shift-focused eventually, that you can't think like that,” Staal said. The good news for the Canadiens was they continued to show an ultra-opportunistic approach to attacking any opening, down to forcing OT and being a goal away from a 2-0 series lead despite being outplayed most of Saturday.Josh Anderson's first goal at the 11:11 mark of the opening period came on the Canadiens' first shot on goal, set up by Taylor Hall's failed clear attempt that was kept in at the blue line by Kaiden Guhle. Anderson's second came on a third-period rebound of his own shot in a multi-player scramble in front of the crease after Carolina couldn't get that puck cleared, either. It's a familiar story for Montreal, notably going back to how they won Game 7 on the road of the first-round series against Tampa Bay despite getting just nine shots on goal. Or how they regrouped from blowing a 2-0 lead in Game 7 at Buffalo to win that second-round series in overtime.“It can take one play in a game to change the whole mood and the energy,” Montreal captain Nick Suzuki said Sunday. "We've got a lot of opportunistic guys, and we trust the style. ... So if you can get through those moments, there's usually something good on the other side of that. “We've done that all playoffs, and I don't really see that changing. I think we can win any type of game."___AP NHL playoffs: https://apnews.com/hub/stanley-cup and https://apnews.com/hub/nhl0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMohamed Salah serves perfect reminder of Liverpool legacy in tearful Anfield farewellNow the reign of Liverpool’s Egyptian king is over. But if Mohamed Salah abdicated, he signed off first in style and then in tears. Not with the goal he surely wanted, though he was inches away from a 258th and last for Liverpool, but with a reminder the third highest scorer in their history was more than just a scorer, and then an illustration of how much he and they have meant to each other.A moving goodbye was an imperfect one, with neither a win nor a goal for Salah, but it was laced with a touch of class. A cross that served as a reminder he has more than a century of assists for Liverpool showed that, while Salah was sometimes accused of selfishness – for his words off the field and his shots on it – he made plenty of goals for others. He will leave quite a legacy. A man who played in three Champions League finals and scored in one can take solace in the fact it includes seeing Liverpool back in the European elite. Underwhelming as a draw against Brentford was, Liverpool required a point to guarantee fifth place and Champions League football, and that is exactly what they got. “The minimum required,” said Arne Slot. A meaningful match had a sentimental significance. Salah welled up when he returned to the pitch after the final whistle; he was hugged by Jordan Henderson, his Champions League-winning captain, making a belated first return to Anfield since his own departure in 2023 and finishing with his own lap of honour. There were constant choruses for Salah and Andy Robertson, who each had a drawn-out departure when substituted, featuring a guard of honour and interrupted by embraces from teammates. Each, indisputably, is an Anfield great and there was a rightful recognition of the spectacular service they have provided over the last nine years. (Reuters)“They completely got what they deserved,” Slot. “Two legends and they have won nine trophies, for them it must have been a special day and a difficult day but the fans made it special for them. This club knows how to celebrate a league title and how to handle tragedies and how to celebrate these two players.” Two of Liverpool’s finest ever, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish, made presentations on the pitch; Salah and Robertson had their families with them, standing in front of the Kop one last time. And if each is past a brilliant best, each can at least go knowing he gave Anfield a final glimpse of the player he was as he became perhaps the greatest Liverpool left-back of all, certainly their finest in the Premier League era. In his 378th and last game, Robertson was busy, breaking forward with verve, indicating he had been underused this season. Meanwhile, this was a last time when Salah looked relentless in a Liverpool shirt. When he went off, only Curtis Jones had touched the ball more; one, courtesy of Salah, went into the net. The Egyptian’s Liverpool career began with a goal, at Watford in 2017, and there was a quest to end likewise. He scored the most goals in part because he had the most shots. He has not always felt as irrepressible this season. He was back to running at defenders, scurrying in trademark fashion, providing trickery in the box. Liverpool may have been trying to get him a valedictory goal. He was agonisingly close. Salah curled a free kick against the post, leaving his former teammate Caoimhin Kelleher motionless.Mohamed Salah of Liverpool poses for a selfie with fans (Getty)There was nevertheless a moment of magic. Cody Gakpo hooked a pass forward, Salah surged into space – running down the wing, as the lyrics of his song went - and delivered a wonderful cross with the outside of his left foot. Jones, arriving at pace, a makeshift right-back entering the six-yard box, supplied the finish. In keeping with Liverpool’s season, and certainly the end of it, there was no victory. Their lead only lasted six minutes. Brentford levelled through Kevin Schade’s close-range header after Keane Lewis-Potter’s cross deflected off Jones. Brentford got their first league goal at Anfield since 1937 but not a win that would have earned them a maiden European campaign. “If you had told me on the first of July we would be disappointed to miss out on Europe on goal difference,” reflected manager Keith Andrews. His side were so near to victory when Dango Ouattara headed over in the 100th minute while, at the other end, Kelleher had made an injury-time save from Florian Wirtz.Andy Robertson of Liverpool reacts as he is presented with a frame by CEO Billy Hogan, Sporting Director Richard Hughes, and former Liverpool players Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush (Getty)There had been a still better stop earlier, by a player who may have been on his own Anfield farewell. Alisson Becker’s point-blank sharp from Schade showed that, if he goes as well, Liverpool will miss his nerveless brilliance when isolated against a forward. They are already facing up to losing Salah and Robertson. “I'm definitely going to miss them,” said captain Virgil van Dijk. “We’ll say goodbye to legends of the club. Now it's a wrap on a disappointing season.” And a wrap on the Salah years.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

This year’s NFL season features nine international games, the usual Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and Christmas slate, and a ton of potential memorable matchups.ICYMI here is the 2026 @NFL International Games schedule pic.twitter.com/UUAptae4sm— NFL Media (@NFLMedia) May 15, 2026What are the best NFL matchups each week? To determine the best matchups, we looked at the best storylines, quarterback matchups, past matchups that wowed, and other factors that would attract a viewer to an NFL matchup. With 18 weeks of action this will be split up into three parts beginning with Weeks 1-6, then to Weeks 7-12, and rounding out with Weeks 13-18. (All times in EST)Week 1: New England Patriots @ Seattle Seahawks – September 9, 8:20 p.m.On Wednesday, Sep. 9, the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will face off in a Super Bowl 60 rematch on NBC to begin the NFL Season. Wednesday will be an unusual start to the season because of the Thursday night matchup in Melbourne, Australia, between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. Last season, Sam Darnold and the Seahawks defeated the Patriots 29-13 in the Super Bowl with their dominant defense, but if the Patriots land Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, the matchup could look completely different. With the return of receiver Tank Dell, Nico Collins will now have his running mate back, the one who wreaked havoc before a gruesome injury in a December 2024 matchup with the Chiefs. Dell was productive for the Texans in his first two years, totaling 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns. For the Bengals, receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins will face a physical secondary led by Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter, and will allow fans to see the best-on-best for four straight quarters.Last time these two teams played, in Week 10 of the 2023 season, the Texans edged the Bengals 30-27 behind 356 yards, a touchdown, and an interception from Stroud. Burrow threw for 347 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the loss. Another duel in early September should not disappoint. Week 3: Los Angeles Chargers @ Buffalo Bills – September 27, 1:00 p.m.Last time these two teams faced off, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen faced Los Angeles Chargers backup quarterback Easton Stick during Week 16 of the 2023 season that resulted in a 24-22 win for the Bills. This time around, things should look different as Allen faces Justin Herbert in a Week 3 matchup. The Chargers recently acquired former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku, creating a dynamic duo with second-year tight end Oronde Gadsden II. Gadsden finished last season with 49 receptions for 664 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season. Not only did the tight end room get stronger, but the Chargers have running back Omarion Hampton and wide receivers Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston to balance out the offensive attack. Bell was drafted out of UConn and finished his 2025 campaign catching 101 receptions for 1,278 yards and 13 touchdowns. His presence could give Allen another reliable option outside of Moore and Shakir and turn the Week 3 matchup into an offensive showdown. Burrow left the game early with a toe injury, which left backup Jake Browning to hold it down for the Bengals. Browning delivered with 241 yards and two touchdowns despite his three picks, while Lawrence threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns with two picks. Ultimately, the Jaguars were unable to stop Chase, who caught 14 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown.View this post on InstagramNow that the Jaguars are improved on the offensive end with the addition of Jakobi Meyers, both offenses could score a lot of points and produce another instant classic. This also gives the Jaguars’ defense another opportunity to try to slow down a top-three receiver in Chase. Week 5: Buffalo Bills @ Los Angeles Rams – October 12, 8:15 p.m. (ESPN)The Rams will host the Bills in Los Angeles’ fourth primetime game in five weeks on Monday Night Football. The Rams have seven primetime games total and will have faced the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and 49ers in that slot coming into the matchup. Last year’s Most Valuable Player, Matthew Stafford, looks to duel Allen and show why this team earned a heavy primetime schedule. Last time these two teams played, the Rams won a 44-42 offensive shootout in Week 14 of the 2024 season. Allen finished with six total touchdowns (three rushing, three passing), but his efforts fell short due to wide receiver Puka Nacua catching 12 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. This offseason, the Bills invested in their secondary by drafting South Carolina safety Jalon Kilgore and Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun, hoping to better defend the NFL’s best pass catchers. This time around, the Bills will see Nacua paired alongside Davante Adams. Yes, there’s the quarterback battle of Rodgers vs Baker Mayfield, but both these offenses bring firepower in their skill positions as well. For the Buccaneers, they’ll have a backfield highlighted by running back Bucky Irving alongside newly acquired running back Kenneth Gainwell, who spent last season with the Steelers and had his best year to date. At the receiver position, the trio of Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan poses a threat. Add in tight end Cade Otton, and the Buccaneers have one of their best passing attacks yet, even without Mike Evans. The Steelers rebranded their offense by adding receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and running back Rico Dowdle in free agency, while adding Alabama Crimson Tide wideout Germie Bernard. The Steelers also add that group of talent to a well-established group of weapons in receiver DK Metcalf, running back Jaylen Warren, tight end Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTottenham revel in survival – now they must learn the lessons of a nightmare seasonWhen the full-time whistle blew, James Maddison bent over on his haunches gasping for breath. Kevin Danso collapsed in a heap. Roberto De Zerbi ran onto the pitch like he’d won a trophy before remembering himself and turning back to shake hands with David Moyes. All around them, Tottenham fans erupted with relief. This could have been Spurs’ lowest ebb, on an afternoon when relegation loomed and smirking Arsenal fans passed them on the Victoria Line. Instead, this was a day of shared joy and collective catharsis. In those lost weeks under Igor Tudor, Spurs fans were resigned to their fate; just a few games later, the nightmare is over, for now at least. Spurs supporters gave their team a deafening soundtrack, and the players responded with a performance full of commitment and energy in blistering north London sunshine. Danso was immense at the back and Joao Palhinha was everywhere, including Everton’s box where he pounced on a rebound to score the only goal. And Antonin Kinsky – embarrassed under Tudor – made a heroic, full-stretch save to deny the Everton substitute Tyrique George what would have been a nerve-jangling equaliser in added time.It was far from a vintage footballing display. Spurs ended with Djed Spence and Pape Matar Sarr on the wings, square pegs in round holes trying to plug the drain. But Tottenham clung on to a 1-0 victory to record their third home win of the season, and the most important in these parts for many years, given West Ham did what they needed to in east London. The Hammers are down after a 14-year run in the Premier League.Dominic Solanke and Pape Matar Sarr of Spurs celebrate (Reuters)So for Tottenham, there is no humiliating relegation. They will not become the first Championship team with a 62,000-seater stadium, the first with a 23,000 square-foot megastore, the first to fill their pints from the bottom up. They will not travel to Lincoln City, who won League One singing “Tottenham away, ole ole!”. A £250m black hole has been avoided. There is a chance now to reset under De Zerbi, who reaffirmed his commitment to the job this week. Amid the battle, there were fleeting signs of his football here in the sharp one-touch passing that split open Everton like a tin can in the first half. De Zerbi’s overzealous antics on the touchline will annoy opposing managers and fans, and perhaps Spurs need a bit of that right now.“We deserved this day, this win,” De Zerbi said. “We deserved to stay up because we made 11 points in seven games. My players played a fantastic game, especially in the first half they played very well, and I’m proud.”He hailed the supporters, who greeted the team bus with gusto before kick-off. “They were fantastic, the fans. Before the game, they arrived with big emotion. Next season the target is to make them happier, to stop this suffering.”But none of the optimism should dilute the harsh lessons relegation would have served. Spurs are a club that built a gleaming stadium and thriving commercial arm, which became London’s NFL home and staged sell-out concerts. But somewhere along the way they appeared to forget about the primary purpose of a football club, the reason this 143-year-old institution exists. So when clubs like Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth pour all their heart, soul and resources into running sophisticated football operations, while Tottenham run an events business with a football team, perhaps none of us should be surprised when Spurs finish 17th and far less wealthy clubs qualify for Europe.James Maddison hails his club’s last-gasp survival (Reuters)Above all, there has been a lack of any coherent plan for what Tottenham should be and what a Spurs side should look like. To appoint managers as tactically and spiritually diverse as Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte, Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank in succession is proof of that, while Brentford followed seven years of Frank by appointing his set-piece coach. The Tottenham squad is now a mishmash of players who are either completely different or entirely the same, without blend or balance. And if Daniel Levy can be blamed for some of those decisions, then the post-Levy regime has hardly covered itself in glory. The move by sporting director Johan Lange and CEO Vinai Venkatesham to appoint Tudor seemed fraught with risk from the start, and after only a few games of his disastrous reign, it seemed like an act of self-flagellation.They did at least have the courage to U-turn with just enough time left for De Zerbi to recover the ship. Spurs will be a Premier League team again next year. This magnificent stadium will remain a top-flight venue. They will not become the first Championship side with a microbrewery. Tottenham fans deserve to revel in the moment. But real progress will only be harnessed by the lessons Spurs learn from narrowly avoiding the greatest sporting debacle in Premier League history.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRockies at Diamondbacks updates. Tommy Troy set for big-league debutTommy Troy, called up from Triple-A Reno on May 23, was set for his major league debut on Sunday, May 24. He's in the Diamondbacks' lineup batting ninth and playing left field.Three rookies — Troy, Ryan Waldschmidt and José Fernandez — were in the Diamondbacks' lineup as the team played the final game of a four-game series against the Rockies.Manager Torey Lovullo said Troy got a late call-up while the team was awaiting medical test results on outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s hamstring."I feel very good about putting him in left field," Lovullo said of Troy. "I feel very good about his ability to go out there and have quality at-bats. That's what he's done his whole career. That's what he's been learning to and refine even more as he's progressed through the system. Great opportunity for him to go out there and just be himself."Waldschmidt, batting .340, moved up from the ninth spot in the order, where he's been hitting, to sixth on May 24.Why Diamondbacks keep Garcia in organization Aramis Garcia is the Diamondbacks' third catcher but essentially has been sharing the backup spot behind Gabriel Moreno with Adrian Del Castillo, because Del Castillo is often used as the DH.On Sunday, Garcia was appearing in his fourth game of the season for Arizona. He was called up from Reno on May 19 and has been brought up, sent down and designated for assignment this season. But the Diamondbacks have kept him in the organization because they like his baseball IQ and awareness, Lovullo said. Garcia developed his swing over the past year, and when he was designated for assignment earlier this season, Lovullo encouraged him to stay with the Diamondbacks and go to Reno rather than sign with a new team and have to learn a different system."He knows our playbook. That's part of it," Lovullo said. "But he's just a good baseball player and a good human being. We like that type of character."Rockies at Diamondbacks, 1:10 p.m., Cox, Ch. 34Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (1-3, 5.19) vs. Rockies LHP Jose Quintana (2-2, 4.08).At Chase Field: Nelson is set to make his 11th start of the season. Nelson has been pitching fairly well of late, with his past three starts lasting seven, seven and 6⅔ innings. All three were no-decisions, but Nelson had 18 strikeouts to three walks in those three outings. He is 1-1 with an 8.80 ERA in three career starts against Colorado. ... Quintana is a seemingly ageless wonder who at 37 is in his 15th season in Major League Baseball. His 115 career regular-season wins are the most for a native of Colombia in MLB history. He has a career ERA of 3.76, but is 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA in nine career starts against Arizona.Coming upMonday, May 25: At San Francisco, 2:05 p.m., Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (4-3, 5.71) vs. Giants RHP Landen Roupp (5-4, 3.27).Tuesday, May 26: At San Francisco, 6:45 p.m., Diamondbacks LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (4-1, 2.24) vs. Giants RHP Tyler Mahle (1-6, 6.10).Wednesday, May 27: At San Francisco, 12:45 p.m., Diamondbacks RHP Michael Soroka (6-2, 3.27 ) vs. Giants RHP Trevor McDonald (2-1, 4.76).This article originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Rockies at Diamondbacks.
