SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrit racer’s bid to complete ‘The Double’ ends in early crash at Indy 500Katherine Legge’s ambitious bid to become the first woman to conquer "The Double" – an arduous 1,100-mile motor racing challenge across two tracks in a single day – was abruptly cut short on Sunday following a crash at the Indianapolis 500.The English driver completed just 17 of the scheduled 200 laps on the iconic 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before colliding with Ryan Hunter-Reay. Hunter-Reay’s car began to spin in the second turn, forcing him to brake hard to avoid the wall. Legge, trailing behind, steered inside in an attempt to evade the 2013 Indy 500 winner, but as smoke billowed from both braking vehicles, her car struck the inside wall, ending both their races."I’m fine, just gutted more than anything," Legge said after being checked and released from the track’s infield medical centre. "Ryan spun in front of me, I think he was battling his car for a minute, I was just chilling, trying to save fuel and he spun down the track and started coming up the track, so I tried to go low and just didn’t make it."Legge is only the sixth driver in history to attempt "The Double," which pairs the Indy 500 with NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in North Carolina. The feat has only ever been completed by three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart in 2001.Legge, driver of the #11 HMD Motorsports w/ AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet is introduced prior to the NTT IndyCar Series 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 24, 2026 in Indianapolis, Indiana (Getty Images)Her ill fortune began even before the race, with a flight delay from New York causing her to miss Indy’s annual media day. Communication issues plagued her during Friday’s final 500 practice, and after flying to Charlotte on Saturday, Coca-Cola 600 qualifying was rained out. "Hopefully, we get all of the travel woes out of the way now before the weekend, and this weekend goes smoothly," Legge told The Associated Press on Thursday. "My management has been speaking with Kyle’s management about how to get the logistics sorted out, how they did it and we’re trying our best to copy and paste what they had and they’re just keeping me in the loop."A brief glimmer of hope emerged when the speedway avoided predicted pre-race rain, allowing the Indy 500 to start on time. However, this was quickly extinguished by the tangle with Hunter-Reay, who was also checked and released by IndyCar’s medical team. "It was super tough out there," Hunter-Reay said. "The whole time I was trying to keep it off the wall. Just super disappointing. That’s the busiest I’ve been around here in 16 years. I was trying to keep it off the wall the whole time and finally, one of those wiggles didn't come back in Turn 2."Crashes and adverse weather have been a recurring theme in the last three "Double" attempts. A rain-delayed Indy start prevented two-time NASCAR champion Kyle Larson from reaching Charlotte in time for the 2024 start, and he crashed out of both races last year after another rain-affected Indy start.Legge’s father, Derek Legge, had expressed cautious optimism before the first race, texting from a golf cart outside her garage: "She’ll stay here throughout. We’re keeping an eye on the weather. It might even be delayed here an hour at a time." By then, Legge’s car was already on the Brickyard, with sold-out grandstands and hundreds of people surrounding the vehicles. The English driver started from the 26th spot at Indy, racing for HMD Motorsports with A.J. Foyt Racing. Despite the crash, she still plans to head to North Carolina, where she will start 37th for Live Fast Motorsports following Saturday’s rainout. Rain, however, could still be a factor, with forecasts indicating an increasing chance of precipitation throughout Sunday night in Charlotte. Unlike previous "Double" contenders who had months to prepare, Legge’s attempt was only announced last week, necessitating a rapid organisation of logistics, including helicopter and private jet travel.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNo. 7 Taylor Fritz stunned in first round by unseeded fellow American Nishesh Basavareddy making his French Open debutNishesh Basavareddy had a French Open debut to remember Sunday as the 148th-ranked American stunned 9th-ranked and 7th-seeded countryman Taylor Fritz in a first round stunner. The pair battled to three consecutive sets that went to tiebreak. When it got to the fourth with Basavareddy holding a 2-1 lead, Basavareddy dominated to secure a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11), 6-1 upset.Basavareddy, 21 and a former Stanford player, advances to the second round with a stunning upset in his first-ever match in the French Open main draw. Fritz becomes the first top-10 seed to fall at Roland Garros. And he loses in the first round for the second consecutive year after falling to Germany’s Daniel Altmaiera as the No. 4 seed in 2025.Fritz had played in just one match in the previous two months, a straight-sets defeat to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday. Fritz had been sidelined with knee tendinitis, and the Round of 16 loss at the Geneva Open was his only clay-court warmup before playing at Roland Garros Sunday. The rust showed against Basavareddy, who earned his spot in the field as a wild-card for winning the USTA Roland-Garros Wild Card Challenge earlier in May.Basavareddy was the better player in the clutch early as he won tiebreaks in each of the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead. The pair played to 6-6 again in the third set, and Basavareddy took a 3-0 lead in the tiebreak to move to the verge of a sweep. Fritz battled back to tie the tiebreak at 3-3, then survived match point to win an 11-9 tiebreak and force a fourth set. Fritz takes the 3rd 7-6 (9) on his 5th set point. Golden opportunity for Basavareddy wasted. Was up 3-0 and had a MP on return… pic.twitter.com/h9eC4iMMu6— JessetheJuicer (@JesseMurphe) May 24, 2026But Fritz had little more to offer after a grueling first three sets. Basavareddy broke Fritz twice to take a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Fritz then hit a Basavareddy serve into the net on match point, and Basavareddy secured the four-set victory for his first top-10 win and the first American victory over a top-10 opponent at the French Open since 2000.USA's Nishesh Basavareddy UPSETS fellow American No. 7 Taylor Fritz 🤯🚨Fritz was the second highest ranked American coming into to Roland-Garros 😱 pic.twitter.com/IxRtJNmuFt— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) May 24, 2026"What a match,” Basavareddy said in his on-court interview. “Taylor's obviously a great player, so super happy to get through that, especially after losing the third set. First French Open main draw, and all the support, it's incredible."Basavareddy advances to take on the winner between American Alex Michelsen and Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko in the second round.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal are champions because they mastered the Premier League’s undeniable truthIn the giddy days between Arsenal being confirmed as English champions and actually getting to lift the Premier League trophy, there was a little line that the players had been talking about. They wouldn’t actually believe they’d done it until they actually got to hold it; to feel how heavy it was.It had been weighing over them for so long, after all. This proved it was real. Every part of its 25.4kg testament to that, nothing left to waste. That’s a bit like Arsenal themselves, given how much went into this arduous title win. Nothing was left on the training ground.Arsenal’s players celebrate their Premier League title triumph at Selhurst Park on Sunday, the club’s first for 22 years (Getty)This Premier League season demanded everything from them. And they ended it with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.If there has been some commentary on how the Premier League also needed a different winner to underline its vaunted competitiveness, that touches on one of the key themes of the campaign. The 2025-26 season has been one which rewarded efficiency and punished waste, much more so than any other in recent years. The point is emphasised right through the division, going down to the very bottom. The most impressive overperformers beyond the champions were the new middle class: Bournemouth, Sunderland, Brighton and Brentford. They have risen because their sophisticated recruitment has maximised resources, taking advantage of the complacency of those wealthier. One of them, of course, was West Ham United.West Ham were relegated with 39 points and went down despite beating Leeds on the final day (Reuters)Going by the last Deloitte Football Money League, the Championship’s newest entrants are also the 20th richest club in the world.Only eight Premier League clubs are wealthier, and none of them – naturally – are the new middle class.West Ham instead as the new grand example of football’s historic propensity for waste only just ahead – or perhaps below – Tottenham Hotspur. This is a consequence of years of both bad management also squandering every single advantage. The strangely open spaces of their tax payers’ stadium reflect the chasm between what has been earned and what has actually been achieved. It is all the worse when you look at the bookend that is their last promotion.West Ham came up in 2012, which was when the Premier League was in final negotiations for the £5bn international broadcast deal that changed everything. There was now more money than clubs knew what to do with. Now, in 2026, the Premier League demands that you have a very strong idea of what you do with it.Roberto De Zerbi rescued Tottenham from the unthinkable: relegation from the Premier League (Reuters)It’s also plays into something of an irony to the Premier League in 2026.It’s got so much money, to produce… this: set-pieces, wrestling in the box, and much more laboured football than we saw in the season’s great counterpoint: Paris Saint-Germain-Bayern Munich. As fashionable as it has been to dismiss this as some kind of English reductiveness, it is the opposite. Thirteen of the managers are from continental Europe, after all, all bolstered by the legions of expensive coaching staff. This evolution, or devolution, really comes from so much money ensuring these coaches have to think about this even more. That’s not just about the cost of success or failure, either. It’s because, with an expanded European calendar, it has made the Premier League so rich in all kinds of talent. It’s not like 20, or even five years ago. Every week, coaches are coming up against the most complex pressing and tactical plans. The effect of this can be seen in one stat. There were only eight wins by four goals or more, a historic low.More games were in the balance for longer, as Arsenal know all too well. After three runners-up finishes, Arteta banished Arsenal ‘doubts’ to make the Gunners champions again (Reuters)One reason that Arteta’s staff actually tilted towards set-pieces away from the aggression of 2022-23, in fact, was because they were increasingly facing more massed defences. That brought more set-pieces, that invited specialism.Hence we’re seeing so much more of that, as well as the wrestling in the box that only brings increased use of VAR.It is the Premier League sapping everything out of its teams.Set-pieces are just the ultimate manifestation of this. Why leave such a potential advantage unexplored? It could be argued this might have the adverse effect of making the Premier League less appealing, but the very competitiveness also keeps it so compellingThe 2025-26 campaign might not have the richest football, but it was abundant in storylines, maybe more than ever before.Pep Guardiola, defeated in a title race, waves goodbye to Man City after 10 incredible years (AP)Nottingham Forest had four managers. It’s incredible to think that Ruben Amorim’s tactics board, Rio Ngumoha’s goal to win the Alexander Isak derby and Graham Potter’s stint at West Ham were all this season.By the end, even the debacle of Liam Rosenior’s brief tenure at Chelsea was overtaken by stories of more historic dimensions, like the departures of greats such as Mohamed Salah and Pep Guardiola. And still no outcome to the Manchester City case. The club insist on their innocence.Amid such headlines, it can be easy to forget Keith Andrews’s impact at Brentford or Daniel Farke’s impressive adaptability to keep Leeds United up.One of England’s great soap operas might be concluding, though, as Manchester United have restored a seriousness. Michael Carrick perpetuated the theme of the season by showing Amorim the value of using players efficiently – putting them in their right positions.Liverpool, amid other tests, found that huge signings in a season like this were a massive risk rather than any kind of guarantee.Mohamed Salah departs Liverpool to leave Anfield with an uncertain future (Reuters)If Arne Slot will continue to face scrutiny, Spurs should still feel the most embarrassment. They should never have even come close to relegation.West Ham now take the mantle of the worse relegation ever, if only because of the worth. The club have taken in billions since their last promotion, and this is the result of it: a shambolic and furious relegation. It was still one game from being Tottenham, and that game might have been the controversial win at Aston Villa. They had to go to a Hail Mary of paying a respected manager in Roberto De Zerbi a reported £16m. There is perhaps another lesson there, given the success of coaches like Arteta and Unai Emery. If best practice in football is still to bring in head coaches under a sporting director, there is a strong argument that you can properly maximise everything you’ve got after that if the coach proves he can be a manager and you empower them.Everyone will now be looking to Arsenal in that regard, even if so many claim they don’t enjoy looking at their football.Arteta’s side have been the model of efficiency. It has been the crucial quality, in a campaign that has punished waste.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Has French Open Refused To Implement Electronic Line Calling? All About the Controversial MoveJun 4, 2025; Paris, FR; Alexander Zverev of Germany questions Chair Umpire, Louise Azemar Engzell of Sweden, during his match against Novak Djokovic of Serbia on day 11 at Roland Garros Stadium. © Susan Mullane-Imagn ImagesElectronic line calling has been adopted by tournaments worldwide to track the trajectories and landing spots of balls. Yet the French Open continues to use human line judges, with no electronic replays available for players to challenge calls. Why Does The French Open Not Use Electronic Line Calling?Tennis has been at the forefront of sports in adopting technology. Electronic line calling was first adopted in the 1970s and has now become the standard in tennis, with three of the four Grand Slams and most ATP and WTA tournaments above the 250 level using the technology as part of the sport’s revolution. However, the French Open remains the largest tournament that does not use electronic line-calling. Organizers at Stade Roland Garros believe this allows them to preserve tennis’s traditions while avoiding having human eyes replaced by technology. It also prevents technology from taking away more human jobs in an era where it has quickly become the norm.In 2025, President of the Fédération Française de Tennis, Gilles Moretton, said the federation would like to keep referees and line officials at the French Open for as long as possible.“We are a federation where umpires and line judges work every day and, I say this with all humility, we are the best country for providing officials on the tour. We take pride in this, we have a strong training system. We are a benchmark and we want to stay that way,” he said. With no electronic line calling at the French Open, officials rely on ball marks to make their calls. The line judges make the calls which are then ratified by the chair umpire. While the decision to resist using electronic line calling at the French Open remains controversial, players over the years have also shared their concerns over the reliability of the technology. There have been several cases of system malfunction, and the accuracy of the technology used has also drawn criticism from players, including Emma Raducanu.“I don’t [trust the electronic line calling technology]. I think the other players would say the same thing, there were some pretty dodgy ones but what can you do?” Raducanu said after losing to Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon, where electronic line calling was introduced last year.MORE: Players at Risk of Early Upset at French Open 2026, featuring João Fonseca, Hailey BaptisteNot all players are against the technology, and some have even advocated for the French Open to adopt electronic line calling. However, the French Open continues to resist those calls as it looks to maintain the traditions of storied its 125-year history.0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTurin derby starts hour late after trouble leaves fan in hospitalJuve's hardcore fans demanded that the match be suspended (MARCO BERTORELLO)Juventus's local derby at Torino on Sunday kicked off over an hour late for "public safety" after one of the Serie A giants' fans was admitted to hospital following pre-match clashes with rival supporters.Luciano Spalletti's side are one of four teams vying for the two remaining Champions League places, but the players were still in the changing room when their top-four rivals kicked off their fixtures.A kick-off time of 9.45pm local time (1945 GMT) was announced, against the wishes of Juve's away supporters, who demanded that the match be suspended after one of their number suffered what local media are calling serious, but not life-threatening, injuries in the brawl. The announcement sparked anger among Juve fans who abandoned the away end in protest, but in the end the match started at 9.51pm.The other four matches involving teams chasing the top four or trying to avoid relegation were delayed by around five minutes as they were supposed to all kick off at the same time. But the fixtures involving third-placed AC Milan, fourth-placed Roma and fifth-placed Como, who are level on 68 points with Juve in sixth, did kick off despite the Turin derby being delayed. Two points separated Juve from the Champions League spots heading into this season's final round of fixtures.td/mw0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

If you use your $50 sign-up bonus to buy shares on the home favorite, a winning prediction on the San Antonio Spurs (trading at roughly 53%) would yield $40.65 in profit. On the flip side, if we see value in the underdog and trade our $50 on the Oklahoma City Thunder (around 47%), we're looking at a $52.00 profit should they pull off the upset and secure the victory. When evaluating which team has a real chance to deliver that nice pay day, a quick dive into the advanced stats reveals a tightly contested matchup with contrasting strengths. I always look at efficiency first: the Thunder currently hold the advantage in overall scoring efficiency, boasting a Net Rating of 14.3 compared to the Spurs' 11.7. This tells us Oklahoma City is slightly more effective at outscoring opponents per 100 possessions. However, San Antonio flexes a significant advantage on the glass. The Spurs have secured 53.1% of all available rebounds (Total Rebound Percentage), while the Thunder sit at just 50.1%. If San Antonio can use this rebounding edge to control possession and limit second-chance opportunities, they might just neutralize Oklahoma City's slight efficiency advantage.Once you get comfortable trading these single-game probabilities, you can easily step up to longer-term strategies. The beauty of this platform is that we aren't just limited to tonight's tip-off; you can also make trades on future outcomes. For instance, if you think OKC's scoring efficiency will carry them all the way, you can take a position on the Thunder to win the NBA Finals. It’s all about spotting value wherever the market offers it.Polymarket Promo Code Guide for New UsersGetting started and claiming your $50 sign-up bonus ahead of the Spurs-Thunder matchup is a quick and straightforward process. Men's Team Exclusive Guardiola merchandise collection available now! Above all, he’s done it with relentless and beautiful attacking football in a style that while inimitable, has inspired sides up and down the pyramid to attempt to play the Pep way. While such an impact can never be fully captured by numbers and records, Guardiola’s time in England has broken new ground on so many frontiers. Here we’ll recount the stats that formed the basis of this historic decade…Overall Premier League tableThe boss has led us to a whopping 865 points from his 380 Premier League games in charge, averaging 2.28 points per game and almost 87 per season.Liverpool are the only other side to make 800 over the course of the last 10 years, ending on 801 – a whopping 64 behind Pep’s City. Men's Team Every word of Guardiola's final pre-match press conference Arsenal are next on 726 with Chelsea on 670 and Manchester United rounding up the top five on 662 – more than 200 behind Pep and City over the course of the last 10 years.Over the course of his 10 years in the Premier League, Guardiola has been the quickest manager to 500, 600, 700 and 800 points.Win percentageThe boss won 70% of his 593 matches across all competitions, coming out on top 416 times. In Premier League terms alone, it’s 269 wins in his 380 games – which is also a win rate of approximately 70%.That’s almost five per cent more than Alex Ferguson, who won 65.2% of his 810 matches in the Premier League and way above other Premier League managerial greats in Arsene Wenger (57.2%), Jose Mourinho (59.2%) and Jurgen Klopp (62.5%).Since 2008/09, when Pep managed in one of Europe’s top five leagues for the first time, he has won 467 league games. That’s over a 100 more than any other boss in that same time period. Men's Team Pep: I leave so confident about City looking to the future Goal differenceWith a goal difference of +576 across his Premier League career, City are 153 better off than Liverpool, who have been the next best side in the 10 years. That’s come from 904 goals scored and only 328 conceded.Meanwhile, our goal difference across all competitions is a frankly unbelievable +901 owing to 1,423 scored and 521 conceded. The three seasons with the best goal difference for a Premier League side have been Pep’s City, finishing +79 in 2017/18, +73 in 2021/22 and +72 in 2018/19.Two of the three highest scoring seasons in Premier League history have come for City under Pep, with the record set by our 2017/18 team with 106.In 2019/20, we hit 102, with Chelsea’s 103 in 2009/10 the only other one to surpass that.Title winsWith six titles to his name, only Alex Ferguson has won the English top-flight more than our boss. He’s tied with Aston Villa’s George Ramsey, who won the league six times between 1894 and 1910, and Bob Paisley at Liverpool between 1976 and 1983.And as we know, our four titles in a row between 2020/21 and 2023/24 is an all-time English football record for the longest streak of top-flight titles.Only Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and David Moyes have won more matches in the Premier League era than Guardiola, but our man’s win percentage is significantly better than any of that trio.Guardiola’s first title in 2017/18 came with a Premier League points record as we racked up a century, an amazing 19 points better than second placed Manchester United. We followed that success up in 2018/19 by edging out Liverpool to the title, claiming 98 points. We were again far ahead of the competition in 2020/21, finishing 12 points ahead of Manchester United before another tense battle with Liverpool ended in a second title decided by just one point. Our 2022/23 season saw us collect 89 points – five more than Arsenal in second before we surpassed 90 again with 91 in 2023/24.90 pointsWe have accumulated at least 90 points in four seasons under Guardiola. That is more than any other side in the Premier League has managed in the league’s entire history, with Liverpool and Chelsea both hitting that mark three times. Manchester United have done it twice and Arsenal once. Most goalsErling Haaland is the most prolific player in Pep’s time at City, scoring 162 times.Sergio Aguero is next with 124 and Raheem Sterling on 120 before Phil Foden rounds up all players to surpass 100 on 110.Most assistsKevin De Bruyne is far and away the most creative player from Pep’s period in charge, providing 158 assists across all competitions.Bernardo Silva is next on 75 with Raheem Sterling on 66 and Phil Foden on 65.Watch video for free with a Cityzens account Register Sign in Loading your videoThis may take a few seconds. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRajsathan Royals seal IPL playoffs spot as Jofra Archer shines in 30-run victory over Mumbai IndiansNEW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians by 30 runs to confirm their place in the playoffs in their IPL 2026 match played on Sunday at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. With this result, Rajasthan finished on 16 points and joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the knockout stage. MI’s defeat also ended their campaign, as they finished ninth in the table.Batting first, Rajasthan Royals posted 205 for eight. The innings was shaped by late acceleration, with 73 runs coming in the last five overs after a slow start earlier in the innings. Jofra Archer played a key role with the bat as well, scoring 32 off 15 balls, hitting three sixes and a four to lift the total past 200. Other contributors included Yashasvi Jaiswal (27), Dhruv Jurel (38) and Dasun Shanaka (28). Ravindra Jadeja, coming in at No. 9, added three boundaries in the final overs to push the score further.Rajasthan’s start was mixed. Much of the focus was on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top, but Sooryavanshi fell early for 4. Jaiswal looked in good touch in his short stay. He hit two big sixes off Chahar and also sent Will Jacks over long-off for another maximum, but his innings ended on 27 when he was caught after a leading edge off a fuller delivery. At 33 for two, Rajasthan were in trouble.Captain Riyan Parag could not convert his start into a big score. He played a few attacking shots but was dismissed in the sixth over after a mistimed shot was caught by Tilak Varma off AM Ghazanfar (1/45). Dhruv Jurel also played a steady knock of 38 off 26 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes, but could not fully accelerate the innings.Dasun Shanaka added momentum with a quick 29 off 15 balls, including three sixes, but his innings ended due to a mix-up with Jurel in the 11th over. Despite losing wickets, Rajasthan managed to reach a competitive total, helped by Archer’s late hitting. In reply, Mumbai Indians were restricted to 175 for nine. Their chase began poorly as the top order collapsed early. Rohit Sharma (0 off 4), Naman Dhir (6 off 5), Ryan Rickelton (12 off 7) and Tilak Varma (3 off 7) all got out cheaply, leaving MI under pressure.Suryakumar Yadav kept MI in the contest with a strong 60-run innings. He built two important partnerships, first adding 63 runs for the fourth wicket with Will Jacks (33), and later 48 runs with captain Hardik Pandya (34 off 16 balls) for the sixth wicket. For a period, MI looked like they could chase the target. However, Rajasthan regained control in the final overs of the match. Jofra Archer finished his spell with excellent figures of 3 for 17 in four overs, including the wicket of Hardik Pandya. Nandre Burger then removed Suryakumar Yadav, ending MI’s resistance. The dismissal of Suryakumar proved decisive as Mumbai’s hopes ended there. Rajasthan’s bowling unit held their nerve to close out a comfortable win, securing their playoff spot and eliminating Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in the process.0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe moment that broke Guardiola on day a decade of glory endedPep Guardiola won 416 of his 593 games in charge of Manchester City [Getty Images]Pep Guardiola had been playing it cool in the scorching heat that accompanied his final game in charge of Manchester City. Then he cracked. There were tears - and plenty of them.As captain Bernardo Silva's number 20 went up on the fourth official's board on 59 minutes, Guardiola could not keep his emotion in check any longer. The Portugal playmaker shed tears as he was given a guard of honour by both sets of players as he left the pitch. And it was then that they started to stream down his manager's cheeks too.The two men, such pivotal figures in City's recent domination of English football, embraced on the touchline. That raw moment of affection between two greats of the Premier League was captured by photographers and will be printed, framed and hung up in the corridors of Etihad Stadium alongside those of icons Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure.Guardiola wiped his face dry with his white t-shirt and tried to regain his composure as his side strained for one final victory under his management. It was not to be. But despite defeat at the hands of an Aston Villa side high on success after Wednesday's Europa League win, the loss was rendered irrelevant by the sound of the full-time whistle that sparked emotion on the pitch and in the stands.Guardiola attempted to find the words to sum up the feelings of the day. "This chapter will always be there," said the 55-year-old."Bernardo was emotional today, before the game. If you want to cry then cry, if you want to laugh then laugh. Emotions - you have to express them. I don't cry, but when I see somebody else cry, then I cry."Fans flock to see end of Guardiola eraThe merchandise stalls were doing a roaring trade before kick-off as flags and scarves emblazoned with Guardiola's face were bought by those attending the end of this incredible era.The arrival of the City team bus was greeted by hundreds of supporters lining up alongside the barriers in front of the Colin Bell Stand entrance, hoping to catch a glimpse of Guardiola entering the stadium for one last time as their manager. His tenure has delivered the Premier League title six times, as well as the holy grail of a Champions League plus three FA Cups and five Carabao Cups. City have never previously seen success like it. Very, very few have. Only the great Manchester United era under Sir Alex Ferguson and Bob Paisley's Liverpool in the 1970s and '80s have enjoyed such trophy laden years.A huge banner was unfurled in the East Stand as the players emerged onto the pitch before kick-off that read '10 years with Pep - Game changer, history maker, City forever'.Villa boss Unai Emery, who called Guardiola football's "only genius" in the build-up to the game, presented his fellow Spaniard with a memento before the match began.Guardiola barely flinched when his penultimate signing Antoine Semenyo volleyed home the opening goal, instead remaining in his seat and seemingly taking it all in.To the left, his name will be immortalised at Etihad Stadium forever, with the newly expanded north end renamed the 'Pep Guardiola Stand' in his honour.Guardiola said on Friday he was incredibly proud his father's name will be adorned inside the stadium forever and 95-year-old Valenti was there for his son's final game in charge. His voice cracked during his farewell speech on the pitch, as supporters serenaded him with chants of "We've got Guardiola" one last time. He made one final lap of honour and exited down the tunnel."Many memories - forget the titles, it's the memories. All of us," said Guardiola. "All the people here are extraordinary."Life is made of periods, we lived an incredible period. If I had energy I would stay here. A new person has to do this job."Our time was good. Thank you to all the people, the new stand is beautiful."Emery added: "A huge honour for me to compete with Pep Guardiola. He is the best. I built my career a lot of time competing against him, especially in Spain."The level he has - he is the best coach in the world."Villa ruin Guardiola's final game in charge of Man CityAn architect who redefined football - why Guardiola stands apart'Man City fans need to be patient with Maresca'It was fitting that Sunday's game took Guardiola - City's greatest manager - to the top of the list for most games in charge of the club.Guardiola won 416 of his 593 games in charge, a victory ratio of 70.2%. Only Manchester United's Ferguson, with 13, has claimed more top-flight English titles .His points-per-game rate of 2.28 is unmatched by any manager to have taken charge of 20 or more games in England and City remain the only side to win 100 points in a Premier League season."10 more years, 10 more years, Guardiola" was the chant echoing from the South Stand in the knowledge that the Spaniard will take up an ambassadorial role upon his departure.Negotiations with Enzo Maresca are at an advanced stage, so it remains to be seen when his appointment as Guardiola's successor will officially be confirmed."The Man City fans just need to be patient with Enzo Maresca," former striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live."It is similar to David Moyes following Sir Alex Ferguson. It's an impossible task following Pep Guardiola with the way his teams have played, the way he has adapted over the years and the huge amount of trophies he's won."In many ways, they have won the FA Cup and League Cup this season but they will still be a little bit disappointed. That is how far they have come under Guardiola."And Guardiola's advice to his successor?"They have to be themselves," he said. "That is the most important thing. The way they communicate, the way they play, they have to be them."This club is good at many things, and they do transitions really well. It will be good."Goodbye to Silva, Stones and two old favourites Bernardo Silva has featured in more games than any other player during Pep Guardiola's managerial career [Getty Images]Guardiola has been the dominant figure at City over the past 10 years - but the key departures from the Etihad this summer do not end there.Captain Silva and defender John Stones will both leave upon the expiry of their contracts next month and they were presented with framed shirts by Guardiola.Silva has been one of Guardiola's pivotal players, featuring in more games - and astonishing 460 - for the Spaniard than any other player during his career."It's really tough to put into words my feelings towards City, to you guys," Silva said while addressing the crowd. "I don't think I will ever feel the same love ever in my life. This will forever be my family and I'm really grateful."Stones added: "I can't express the gratitude that I feel for the love that you've given me. It's been a dream come true."From the bottom of my heart and my family's hearts, thank you so much."There was a chance to give a proper send-off to two former players too.Ex-captain Ilkay Gundogan - who scored the winner on the final day against Villa in 2022 - and goalkeeper Ederson both returned to the Etihad to take the acclaim having left for Turkey on deadline day last summer.Guardiola's staff member and right-hand man Manel Estiarte, fitness coach Lorenzo Buenaventura and long-serving goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor were all recognised for their contributions too, with the trio also set to depart. It was truly the end of an era at the Etihad, an era Guardiola, his players and the City supporters will cherish forever.0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'We don't pick age, we ... ': Kumar Sangakkara's bold statement after Rajasthan Royals seal IPL 2026 playoff berthNEW DELHI: The tension was clearly visible on Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara’s face during his side’s must-win IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.Sangakkara remained glued to his seat till the very last ball, repeatedly wiping sweat off his face with a towel and barely showing any expression throughout the game. But the moment the final ball was bowled and Rajasthan Royals confirmed their playoff qualification with a 30-run win over Mumbai Indians, a visibly relaxed Sangakkara stood up, applauded his players and exchanged handshakes with members of the support staff and team. While Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were dependent on complicated qualification scenarios and net run-rate equations, Rajasthan Royals entered the game with a simple task - win and qualify for the playoffs.RR delivered under pressure, riding on Jofra Archer’s brilliant all-round performance to seal the fourth and final playoff berth in style."During the last timeout it was just about sticking to plans and holding your nerve. When you go to the back end it's all about who responds better under pressure. All the bowlers did a brilliant job. And on the field we were pretty tidy. It's always guesswork isn't it (Archer's promotion while batting). It's great when it works and pretty ugly when it doesn't," Sangakkara said after Rajasthan Royals’ victory.Jofra Archer shines with bat and ballArcher first made a crucial impact with the bat, smashing 32 runs off just 15 deliveries to help Rajasthan Royals post 205 for eight. The England pacer hammered three sixes and a four during his quickfire cameo that changed the momentum of the innings. He then backed it up with an outstanding spell with the ball, returning figures of 4-0-17-3 to earn the Player of the Match award."We know what Jofra can do with the bat. Wanted him to go out there and take a bit of risk. And then let Ferreira and Dubey handle the later overs when the bowlers were tired in the sun. Unfortunately Donovan did get out but Jofra kicked on and then Jaddu coming in at the end with a bung elbow got us over the line," Sangakkara said."From where we were, looking at only 180, 206 was a fantastic effort. He has been like that in every single game (Archer being fired up). Very invested in the team, helping everyone. Has been our spearhead right from the start. Very proud of him."Sangakkara praises young spinner YashThe Rajasthan Royals coach also reserved special praise for young spinner Yash Raj Punja, who impressed against a strong Mumbai Indians batting line-up. Punja claimed 2/44. "Yash has been an interesting choice for us. He's tall, has got good revs on the ball, turns his leg spinner and the googly. This is a good wicket to bat on but the way he bowled to those seasoned batters was outstanding. We don't pick age, we pick ability," Sangakkara added.Rajasthan Royals will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator of IPL 2026 on May 27 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRays Run Into A Loss: Rays 0, Yankees 2The Rays absolutely had their chances to win this game to wrap up a five-day and two-game road trip, but bad baserunning in multiple innings left the club scoreless to set up an Aaron Judge walk-off home run in the 9th.The game for the Rays came down to two innings – the 3rd and the 8th – and poor decisions on the basepaths derailed both innings. Carson Williams led off the third with a walk, but was promptly picked off first by Ryan Weathers:View LinkThat moment was followed by singles from both Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda, but instead of Williams scoring on either event, the inning ended when Junior Caminero grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. The 8th inning was more painful because a one-out double off the wall by Diaz was soon followed by a two-out intentional walk of Caminero by Fernando Cruz. Kevin Cash elected to leave Ryan Vilade in to face Cruz with Tim Hill warming in the pen, and Vilade had a tremendous at bat against Cruz singling into left field. That single would have easily scored pinch-running Oliver Dunn if Caminero had not decided that he should take it upon himself to go first to third on a ball hit to left field and get thrown out at third before Dunn was able to cross the plate:View LinkBellinger picked up the baseball as Caminero was into his second step toward third base from mid-left field, and from the video above, it is not clear when he made the decision to run, but his delusions of grandeur cost the Rays the go-ahead run in the 8th because this was just an aggressively bone-headed decision that someone who is not the fleetest of foot absolutely cannot make in that moment:It turns out one run would not have mattered as Kevin Kelly turned an 0-2 count to Grisham into a walk before Aaron Judge broke out of his 11-game RBI slump with a walk-off shot into right-center field. The bad baserunning should not take away from what a brilliantly pitched game by both starters today. Ryan Weathers held the Rays at bay through the first seven innings with only Nick Fortes making any type of hard contact off him. Weathers only generated five swings and misses, but the combination of his stuff and the damp and windy weather shut down the offense. Rasmussen went seven innings on 92 pitches generating 14 whiffs resulting in six strikeouts and just one walk. It was the first time in three years Rasmussen worked seven complete innings and his sixth consecutive start allowing three or fewer runs since the unfortuate outing in Pittsburgh five weeks ago.One area of positivity was something Nick Fortes corrected during the game. Jazz Chisholm Jr was easily able to steal a base in the second inning as Fortes’s throw went to the shortstop side of the bag, something he did twice on Friday night:View LinkDavid Laurila had an interesting piece on Fangraphs the other day which included quotes from Hunter Feduccia in it“I don’t know exactly when they started teaching this, but it’s more to the right side of the bag,” Feduccia told me. “The infielder will set up there to give you a good target. If you tag the runner before he gets to the bag, you have a better chance of not getting swim-moved, and things like that. If you accidentally pull your throw to the left side of the bag, you’re not giving yourself as much of a chance as when it’s toward the runner.”The article then goes on to quote Matt LewCroy who says video review helped teams see throws to the first base side were yielding more out calls, and now teams are coaching that at all levels. Fortes self-corrected in the 4th and barely nabbed Bellinger attempted steal of second base:View LinkThe Rays have struggled all season to prevent the running game, but throws like that at least give the ifnielders a fighting chance and it was good to see Fortes make the better throw the next time the siutation presented itself. The Rays have been in New York since Wednesday night and played just two games in their five-day, four-night stay and walk away with a series split and a 4.5 game lead in the division. They take an Amtrk down from Penn Station to Union Station in Baltimore, where the Orioles walked off the hapless Tigers today with Colton Cowser taking a center cut cutter from Kenley Jansen into the centerfield bleachers. Perhaps the coaches can conduct a micro-lesson while on the train on baserunning to avoid repeating the misatkes of the weekend which also included two pickoffs on inside moves at second base in the first game.0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCould title win start period of dominance for Arsenal? It's been a long wait, but after 22 years Arsenal finally have their hands on the Premier League trophy once more. The success completes Mikel Arteta's remarkable transformation of the club across nearly seven years, now taking the biggest step of all to become domestic champions. His side have shrugged off the tag of 'nearly men' after three successive second-place finishes and now, with the trophy drought ended, thoughts can move to the future."That was beautiful," Arteta said after lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time, hoisting it aloft at Selhurst Park following Sunday's 2-1 win against Crystal Palace."Look at the joy of all of the people, they have been waiting for this for so long. We have had difficult moments along the way but it is all worth it when you see that kind of reaction."Now it is time to enjoy and take the manager hat off."I think we showed an incredible connection, commitment and courage. Everything around us has fuelled our desire to do it."And with a Champions League final against Paris St-Germain on Saturday to look forward to, this could be the start of a period of real dominance for the Gunners. The key moments that decided the Premier League title raceBoats, fire and a TikTok song - inside Arsenal's title winWhy could it be period of dominance?A big reason why this league win is such an important psychological moment for Areteta and Arsenal, is that the Arsenal manager was able to overcome long-time friend and mentor Pep Guardola. The City boss, leaving after 10 seasons in charge, has been the reason for so much of Arsenal's recent disappointment. With Arteta now getting the best of his former colleague, the time for sustained success could be now for Arsenal.Last season's title rivals Liverpool finished 25 points behind the Gunners and there is a debate about whether current manager Arne Slot is the right man to get them back into title contention.Manchester United, although rejuvenated by Michael Carrick, are not back as regular challengers just yet and Chelsea have had a disappointing season and finished in mid-table.Arteta has already shifted the messaging to his players about how their mentality will change now that they are league winners as he urges them to add more silverware to their collection. "I said to the boys that this shirt now represents something else." Arteta said in his post-match press conference. "We are the champions, and that brings a lot of confidence and a different kind of presence and energy to it. "But as well, another kind of responsibility and my job now and [that of] everybody at the club is going to be lift those standards now and achieve much more, because I think we are capable of doing it." Why Arsenal can go to the next level and keep winningArteta has already said that he wants "to have the parade with two big trophies" as he sets out to win the Champions League for the first time in Arsenal's history.Arsenal backed Arteta with around £250m of spending last summer as they looked to increase the quality and depth of their squad and they brought in players like Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi, who were categorised as 'win now' signings. Arteta wants to build a legacy of sustained success at the Gunners and once the Champions League final is over, focus will move to tying him down to a new contract. Initial talks have been had and will increase in pace as all parties work to have the new contract sorted before next season. The Gunners are going to invest again in the transfer market this summer with co-chair Josh Kroenke already saying that Arteta is going to backed. "If anyone deserves this, it's this group." Kroenke said to Sky Sports after the Arsenal trophy lift. "[We are invested] emotionally, financially, everything. This club means the world to us. "I think it took some people a few years to realise what that really meant but we have great people, players and coaches. We just have to continue providing the resources to do magical things like they did this season.Arsenal's football leadership, with Josh Kroenke, CEO Richard Garlick, director of football operations James King and sporting director Andrea Berta alongside Arteta, are looking to recruit a midfielder, left-winger and striker. However, some money will have to be recouped too after last year's big spending. And with success secured, his level of influence and the transformation complete, now could be the time for Arteta to develop Arsenal into serial winners. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWho has made Troy's Premier League team of the season? After every round of Premier League matches this season, BBC football pundit Troy Deeney has given you his team and manager of the week. This time, however, it's the big one. Team of the season.Do you agree? Give us your thoughts using the comments form at the bottom of this page.[BBC][BBC]David Raya (Arsenal): What an unbelievable season. Three seasons in a row now he has won the Golden Glove. He is a huge part of why Arsenal went on to win the league, and in my opinion that save against West Ham is the save that won them the title. He has been fantastic and it's crazy to me that he is not Spain's number one.[BBC]Michael Kayode (Brentford): At 21-years-old, he has got Brentford to an unbelievable part of the season. He has been able to lock down attackers, defend properly and also the assists with the long throw. The threat that he offers - he has been fantastic.William Saliba (Arsenal): He has the brains and intelligence to mop up everything. It's very rare you see him caught out of position. Gabriel (Arsenal): He and Saliba have a wonderful partnership. The two have been massive and monumental in delivering Arsenal their first title in 22 years and Gabriel chips in with goals and assists from set-pieces too.Nico O'Reilly (Man City): In my opinion, he is the player of the season. He has been fantastic playing in two different positions. He has been a real glimmer of hope for whoever takes over Manchester City moving forward.[BBC]Declan Rice (Arsenal): If Arsenal can win the Champions League and if England can go deep in the World Cup, he is on pace for a Ballon d'Or. He has been fantastic. The engine for Arsenal and the player that keeps getting better, week after week.Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd): He broke the assists record with 21 assists. He has been brilliant and got the club back into the Champions League. We have said it over the past few seasons but where would Manchester United be without him?Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool): And where would Liverpool be without this guy? He has played everywhere and his goals and assists this season don't do him justice. He has been the only real glimmer of hope for the side.[BBC]Antoine Semenyo (Man City): He had an unbelievable start to the season with Bournemouth and he came in for City in January and was the spark that got Manchester City going and ultimately kept them in the title hunt. Jarrod Bowen (West Ham): It is unbelievable what he has done with a team that got relegated. Twenty goals and assists in the Premier League is frightening for a team that got relegated.Igor Thiago (Brentford): Twenty-two Premier League goals. The first Brazilian to score more than 20 in the Premier League ever. He has been fantastic.[BBC]Mikel Arteta (Arsenal): Arteta has brought Arsenal back from the brink of being a laughing stock to the team that could potentially dominate for the next three or four years. He was fantastic in every phase of what he has done, never got away from his belief system and you have to say, it looks very scary for the rest of the Premier League. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDid Morgan Wallen sponsor Felix Rosenqvist's Indy 500 car?Felix Rosenqvist won a thrilling Indy 500 on Sunday, giving the Swedish driver his first-career Indy 500 win and just the second win of his IndyCar career. But fans might have taken notice to country singer Morgan Wallen's name getting dropped after the win. Rosenqvist's car was sporting a Morgan Wallen-themed livery, which made it appear as if the singer had personally sponsored Rosenqvist's car. That wasn't exactly the case. Rosenqvist — who races for Meyer Shank Racing — had a music-themed livery as part of the team's collaboration with SiriusXM. As part of the sponsorship, SiriusXM chose to promote its special Morgan Wallen Radio station for the month of May. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSalvador Perez jump-starts KC offense, Royals pull away from the Mariners for 8-6 winKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez made Seattle pitcher Bryan Woo pay for intentionally walking the bases loaded ahead of him, delivering the go-ahead, two-out single Sunday that ignited the Kansas City offense and propelled the Royals to an 8-6 win over the Mariners.Seth Lugo (2-4) allowed a first-inning homer by Julio Rodriguez before pitching into the seventh for Kansas City. The former Cy Young runner-up allowed three runs and six hits and two walks in winning for the first time since his March 29 season debut.Carter Jensen and Maikel Garcia also had two RBIs apiece as the Royals won consecutive games for the first time since May 9-10.Lucas Erceg allowed three runs in the ninth in a non-save situation before finishing out the game.Woo (4-3) allowed four runs and six hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings. He’d allowed just two runs over his previous 18 innings.Royals starters came into the game on a 19-inning scoreless streak, and Lugo promptly retired leadoff man J.P. Crawford. But on his second pitch to Rodriguez, the Mariners slugger sent an 89-mph sinker into the left-field bullpen to give Seattle a 1-0 lead.It was still that way until the fifth inning, when Woo walked Michael Massey and gave up a two-strike bunt single to Kyle Isbel. Woo bounced back to retire the next two batters, then chose to intentionally walk Vinnie Pasquantino and load the bases.Perez, who has been struggling throughout the season, slapped a two-run single through the left side of the infield to give Kansas City the lead. Jensen followed with a two-run double to make it 4-1 and knock Woo from the game. The Royals added a run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings and two more in the eighth to put the game away.Up nextThe Mariners head to California to face the A's on Monday night with RHP Emerson Hancock (3-2, 3.07 ERA) getting the start. The Royals welcome the Yankees for a Memorial Day matinee with RHP Michael Wacha (4-2, 2.70) on the mound.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHeriberto Hernández hits walk-off grand slam as Marlins sweep MetsThe Miami Marlins completed a three-game divisional sweep of the New York Mets on Sunday. The game was tied 0-0 in the bottom of the ninth, and Miami had loaded the bases. Heriberto Hernández cleared them with a 416 ft. walk-off grand slam to center field. WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM IN MIAMI 💥Heriberto Hernández and the @Marlins get the sweep 😤 pic.twitter.com/vddJXkmJ2A— MLB (@MLB) May 24, 2026Hernández did not start the game for the Marlins. He pinch-hit for Owen Caissie in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hernández had an infield single to load the bases, but Kyle Stowers ended that inning by grounding out to second. The 26-year-old came up in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and one out in the inning. Devin Williams came on in relief for the Mets to begin the frame and instantly gave up a double to Christopher Morel. Javier Sanoja then bunted pinch-runner Esteury Ruiz to third base. Liam Hicks drew a walk, and then New York set up the force-out at any base situation by intentionally walking Xavier Edwards. Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentHernández proved why that strategy can backfire in a big way. All he needed was a single, but instead, he knocked his second home run of the season to win the game. Williams, who signed a massive 3-year, $51 million deal with the Mets in free agency this offseason, pitched 0.1 innings and allowed four earned runs, moving his ERA for the season to a dismal 6.35. The loss pushed New York to a 22-31 record, and the Mets have dropped five of their last six games. New York star slugger Juan Soto was a late scratch with an illness. Without his bat, the Mets managed to tally just five hits in the game, with center fielder A.J. Ewing leading the way with two hits in his four at-bats. After dropping three of four to the Atlanta Braves earlier in the week, Miami made up some ground with this divisional series sweep. The Marlins are now 25-29 and in fourth place in the NL East, ahead of the Mets. New York will return home Monday and welcome the Cincinnati Reds to town for a three-game set. Miami will look to stay hot and continue this momentum on the road for three games against the Toronto Blue Jays, who suffered two key injuries in Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTigers' woes continue with 8th straight loss off an Orioles' walk-off homerThe Detroit Tigers continued to slip with a brutal 5-3 walk-off loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. The game was the first of a Sunday double-header in Baltimore. In the bottom of the ninth, with Detroit holding a 3-2 lead, closer Kenley Jansen had a chance to get a major save. With two on in scoring position, Jansen had Colton Cowser at the plate, building up a 0-2 count. But on the third pitch, Cowser sent it deep into center field to get a three-run homer and win the game, 5-3.That ending was tough enough for veteran Detroit announcer Dan Dickerson to express his disbelief: “You’ve gotta be kidding me,” he said as the ball went into the stands."you've got to be kidding me" Tigers finding ways to take Ls, poor Dan Dickerson pic.twitter.com/oq1DpUSkao— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) May 24, 2026That’s the eighth straight loss for the Tigers, who have only won four games in the month of May and have lost 16 of their last 18 games. Detroit has already been swept three times in May, including by the New York Mets earlier this month and division rival Cleveland Guardians last week. And they’re in danger of it happening again as they re-take the field against Baltimore on Sunday. After completing the series against Baltimore, Detroit will host the Los Angeles Angels, who sit at the bottom of the AL West. That battle of the basement will hopefully give the Tigers a chance to turn things around — or else slide even further.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMComo, Roma reach Champions League, Milan, Juve miss outAC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri watched his side drop out of the Champions League places with a 2-1 defeat at home to Cagliari (Piero CRUCIATTI)Como qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history on Sunday, the lakeside club being joined by Roma in the top four as giants AC Milan and Juve missed out on an eventful final day marred by fan violence.Como's 4-1 win at Cremonese, who drop down to Serie B, and AC Milan falling to a shock 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari was enough for Cesc Fabregas's side to cap their incredible rise from lower leagues to Europe's top table.Como will finish the season fourth, two points behind Roma whose 2-0 win at already-relegated Verona ensured third place and an end to their long absence from the Champions League.Roma have not played in Europe's elite club competition since being knocked out by Porto in the last 16 in 2019, and a top-four finish is a huge success for coach Gian Piero Gasperini and the American Friedkin family who own the club. But even that achievement pales into insignificance compared to Como, who have never played in European competition in their history and were in the third tier of Italian football when acquired by tobacco giant Djarum in 2019.Those three results also meant that Juventus will play in the Europa League next season regardless of how their delayed derby at Torino finishes.Juve's match kicked off over an hour late for "public safety" after one of the Turin giants' fans was admitted to hospital following pre-match clashes with rival supporters.Dusan Vlahovic gave Juve the lead in the 24th minute, and a win for Luciano Spalletti's side would mean a fifth-placed finish, with Milan, whose livid fans protested loudly against owners RedBird before, during and after a humiliating defeat, dropping to sixth.Milan started the day in third and looked set to reach the Champions League when Alexis Saelemaekers scored in the second minute. But tap-ins in each half from Gennaro Borrelli and Juan Rodriguez left Milan out of the top four and back in another of a series of crises.td/bc0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTigers 2B Torres taking a break from swinging a bat as he works to return from left oblique strainBALTIMORE (AP) — Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres said Sunday his left oblique strain isn't fully healed and he will be taking a break from swinging the bat as he works to return from the injury.Torres got hurt on May 2, during a 5-1 win against Texas. He was thrown out at home trying to score from second base on Riley Greene’s single and left after three innings. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 4.Torres joined the Tigers in Baltimore this weekend and said he felt pain the last time he attempted to take swings.“It’s not fully healed at the moment,” he said. “In Florida, we do a really good job. We hit a couple days, feels good, but when we try to hit a little bit more, don’t feel any good.”Torres said he is able to do everything defensively and in terms of running. But, he is taking four days off and will hit again on Tuesday. After Baltimore’s walk-off win in game one of a day-night doubleheader Sunday, the Tigers have lost eight straight and 16 of 18 without Torres.“From the beginning, I thought it was going to be a short period,” Torres said of his recovery. “And now it takes me a little bit more than I expected. It feels really frustrating because I feel like I can’t do anything for the team.”Baltimore won the first game of a day-night doubleheader Sunday, sending the Tigers to their eighth straight loss. Detroit has lost 16 of 18 without Torres.A three-time All-Star, Torres missed 10 games early last season because of a left oblique strain. He is hitting .259 this season with two homers and 11 RBIs in 32 games.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe highest-paid UDFA on the Rams is also a TEJan 28, 2026; Mobile, AL, USA; American Team tight end Dan Villari (88) of Syracuse runs a play during American Senior Bowl practice at Hancock Whitney Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Vasha Hunt-Imagn Images | Vasha Hunt-Imagn Images The Los Angeles Rams already have the deepest tight end room in the NFL with five players who are a lock to make a 53-man roster, whether it’s L.A. or somewhere else, but it turns out that Sean McVay’s obsession with the position doesn’t stop there. As details emerged about the Rams’ undrafted signing bonuses on Sunday, it was revealed that tight end Dan Villari received $45,000 guaranteed, the most of any undrafted player on the team. That’s three times as much as the second-highest paid undrafted player on the Rams in 2026, but also the second-most for any UDFA signed by the team ever, behind only Josh Wallace in 2024. Wallace made the Rams roster in each of the last two seasons, so does that mean the Rams are going to keep six tight ends?Rams UDFA TE Dan Villari's $45k guaranteed is $20k more than Shaun Dolac's. 2nd most expensive UDFA deal in terms of guarantees behind Josh Wallace but 1st in total value. Evidently a much stronger case to make the roster than I thought he would have based on the money pic.twitter.com/xqQogxdkxs— AJ Schulte (@AJSchulteFB) May 24, 2026Villari, 6’4 and 243 lbs, is called a “multi-purpose move tight end” by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, and a former quarterback who is only starting to come into his own as a skill player. Zierlein calls him a “dynamic” talent who can run, catch, and pass.Taysom Hill version 2.0?Villari started his career at Michigan in 2021, but transferred to Syracuse in 2022. He actually had 326 RUSHING yards in 2023, but had his best season as a receiver in 2025 with 412 yards.Zierlein notes that many of the fundamentals still elude Villari. However, will a summer with Sean McVay and the best tight end room in the league be enough to get Villari up to speed for being a surprise name on the final 53-man roster after training camp? The deepest TE roomThe Rams extended Tyler Higbee and they drafted Max Klare in the second round. We know with 100-percent certainty that they will make the roster. The Rams also drafted Terrance Ferguson in the second round in 2025, making him a 99-percent lock. Colby Parkinson was the best tight end on L.A.’s roster last year, will Les Snead really trade him after the progress he made last season? That leaves Davis Allen, a 2027 free agent. But Allen also showed a lot of progress in 2025. Mark Redman and Rohan Jones, another UDFA, round out the room.Could Villari be the one who pushes Allen onto the trade block? Anything is possible, within reason, but clearly the Rams did not want Dan Villari to sign with any other team in the NFL. If they were willing to give him that much money in April, why wouldn’t they keep fighting to keep him in September? The deepest room got deeper.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBayern Munich reveals asking price for Hiroki ItōWOLFSBURG, GERMANY - MAY 09: Hiroki Ito of FC Bayern München controls the ball during the Bundesliga match between VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern München at Volkswagen Arena on May 09, 2026 in Wolfsburg, Germany. (Photo by Oliver Hardt/Getty Images) | Getty Images Hiroki Itō suffered multiple injury set backs throughout the 2025/26 season. A recurring metatarsal fracture, muscle, and fitness issues, ruled the Japanese international out for a total of 159 days, missing a sum total of 30 games. The Japanese international’s latest injury set of injuries may prove to be the straw that broke the camel’s back as Bayern look to strengthen their defense ahead of the 2026/27 season.According to Christian Falk and Heiko Niedderer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich are reportedly willing to listen to offers for Itō after his lackluster season.Bayern would be open to discuss offers of around €20m for Hiroki Itō [@cfbayern, @itstheicebird] pic.twitter.com/bFtRSkJrnT— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) May 21, 2026Itō has no reported suitors as of yet, but that could change very quickly after his 2026 World Cup campaign with dark horses, Japan. However, it’s not so much a case of proving quality for the former VfB Stuttgart man, but rather proving he can remain fit and healthy. A similar challenge awaits Itō at club level next season — should no suitable offers come in for the Bayern defender. Therefore, it seems Die Rekordmeister’s willingness to let the Japanese international leave is more an issue of health than a desire to upgrade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAaron Judge breaks scoreless ties with walk-off home run as Yankees defeat first-place RaysAaron Judge picked a good time to break his home run drought. With his New York Yankees locked in a scoreless tie against first-place Tampa Bay on Sunday, Judge took the plate with a man on and no outs against Rays reliever Kevin Kelly. Kelly had previously allowed Trent Grisham to reach first on a leadoff walk.Kelly left a first-pitch sinker over the inside of the plate, and Judge made him pay. Judge launched a towering opposite-field fly ball that carried over the right field wall for a walk-off home run to secure a 2-0 Yankees win.AARON JUDGE ENDS IT 👨⚖️WALK-OFF HOME RUN IN THE BRONX pic.twitter.com/yxFisjdpmo— MLB (@MLB) May 24, 2026The home run for Judge was his 17th of the season, good for a second-place tie lead with slugging White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami, three behind MLB home run leader Kyle Schwarber (20). It was his first since May 10 against the Brewers, breaking an 11-game drought. And it picked up a key win for the Yankees, who entered Sunday’s game trailing the first-place Rays in the AL East by 5.5 games. That lead’s now down to 4.5 games as the Yankees (31-22) come away from the weekend series against Tampa Bay (34-16) with a 1-1 split after the Rays’ 4-2 win Friday night. The second game of the series scheduled for Saturday was postponed to September due to weather. Judge’s home run spoils a standout start by Rays starter Drew Rasmussen, who allowed 5 hits and 1 walk with 6 strikeouts in 7 innings his scoreless start. Yankees starter Ryan Weathers wasn’t credited with the win in his own seven-inning gem (4 hits, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts, 0 runs allowed), but he set up New York for victory.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSeries Preview: Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis CardinalsMay 6, 2026; St. Louis, Missouri, USA; Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers (9) shortstop Joey Ortiz (3) second baseman Brice Turang (2) and third baseman David Hamilton (6) celebrate after the Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images | Jeff Curry-Imagn Images The Milwaukee Brewers are set to host the St. Louis Cardinals this week, beginning with an afternoon game on Memorial Day Monday. Milwaukee, who leads the NL Central at 30-20 on the season, swept the Cubs earlier in the week but dropped two of three to the Dodgers over the weekend. The Cardinals are coming off a rough weather weekend in Cincinnati, as they had a pair of rainouts on Friday and Sunday, wrapped around a 1-1 doubleheader on Saturday. They currently sit in second place in the Central, 1.5 games behind Milwaukee. The Brewers’ injured list is primarily occupied by pitchers, with right-handers Quinn Priester and Brandon Woodruff shelved along with lefties Angel Zerpa, Rob Zastryzny, and Jared Koenig. Zastryzny, Koenig, and Woodruff are all pretty close to returning, while Priester is aiming for a June return. Zerpa is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. On the position player side, outfielders Akil Baddoo and Brandon Lockridge are both out, with Baddoo currently rehabbing at Triple-A Nashville and Lockridge out until mid- to late June.St. Louis’ injured list is fairly short, with three position players making up the whole group. Outfielders Lars Nootbaar and Nathan Church are both out, with Nootbaar aiming for a June return after double heel surgery — he’s currently rehabbing at Triple-A Memphis. Church was placed on the IL with a left shoulder strain over the weekend, with his return currently TBD. Infielder Ramón Urías rounds out the IL, as he’s also TBD with a right elbow injury that has kept him out since May 5.Jake Bauers and Brice Turang sit atop Milwaukee’s home run leaderboard with seven each, while William Contreras has been one of the better hitters over the last month or so, boosting his season line to .303/.371/.410 with four homers, eight doubles, 30 RBIs, and 28 runs. With a healthy offense, Christian Yelich, Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick, Jackson Chourio, Gary Sánchez, and Andrew Vaughn are also regularly in the mix, with Joey Ortiz, David Hamilton, Blake Perkins, and Luis Rengifo rounding things out. As a team, the Brewers are hitting .246/.333/.361 (.694 OPS ranks tied for 18th), with 34 homers (last), 246 runs (eighth), and 54 steals (tied for second). The St. Louis offense is led by Jordan Walker, who is turning in a career year with 15 homers, 11 doubles, seven steals, and a .302/.372/.594 line through 50 games. Rookie JJ Wetherholt is second on the team with nine homers and is a perfect 6-for-6 on the basepaths, while Alec Burleson has seven homers. Pedro Pagés, Nolan Gorman, Masyn Winn, Victor Scott II, and Iván Herrera round out the regulars for the Cards, with Bryan Torres, José Fermín, César Prieto, Thomas Saggese, and Yohel Pozo providing the depth. As a team, the Cardinals are hitting .242/.323/.393 (.716 OPS ranks 11th), with 60 homers (tied for 10th), 233 runs (tied for 11th), and 34 steals (tied for 18th).Aaron Ashby anchors the Milwaukee bullpen with a 2.61 ERA and a perfect 8-0 record across 23 appearances, totaling 31 innings with 46 strikeouts. Grant Anderson and DL Hall are right there with Ashby with ERAs below 3.00, while Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill round out the “A” bullpen. Jake Woodford, Shane Drohan, and Carlos Rodriguez give Milwaukee plenty of depth in the innings-eater category. As a staff, the Brewers have a 3.31 team ERA (fourth), including a 3.19 starter ERA (fourth) and a 3.47 bullpen ERA (10th). They’ve struck out 488 batters (fourth) over 445 1/3 innings. The Cardinals’ bullpen has been less than great thus far, though they’ve had a pretty group, as seven players have 23 or more appearances. Justin Bruihl leads the bullpen with 25 appearances, though he has a 5.56 ERA over 22 2/3 innings. Riley O’Brien, JoJo Romero, and Gordon Graceffo are the best of the bunch, as O’Brien leads the way with 13 saves in 17 tries and a 2.96 ERA, Romero has a 2.92 ERA, and Graceffo has a 1.65 ERA. George Soriano (3.32 ERA over 21 2/3 IP), Ryne Stanek (6.00 ERA over 21 IP), Matt Pushard (6.23 ERA over 4 1/3 IP), and Brycen Mautz (no MLB appearances) round out the group, after Mautz was recalled on Sunday to replace Matt Svanson, who was optioned. As a staff, the Cardinals have a 4.20 team ERA (22nd), including a 4.07 starter ERA (13th) and a 4.39 bullpen ERA (21st). They’ve struck out 380 batters (29th) over 462 2/3 innings.Probable PitchersMonday, May 25 @ 1:10 p.m.: RHP Jacob Misiorowski (4-2, 1.89 ERA, 2.13 FIP) vs. LHP Matthew Liberatore (2-2, 4.70 ERA, 4.85 FIP)Misiorowski has simply dominated in May. Over his last four starts, dating back to May 1, he’s totaled 24 1/3 innings with no runs allowed on just nine hits and five walks (0.575 WHIP), striking out 37 to maintain his lead atop MLB’s leaderboard with 88 this season. He went six scoreless with eight strikeouts on just 74 pitches in his last outing against the Cubs, a 5-2 win as part of a three-game sweep. Including his MLB debut last June, Miz has made three career starts against St. Louis, with a 3.95 ERA and 12 strikeouts over 13 2/3 innings, though all of those appearances came last season. After a rainout in Sunday’s series finale against the Reds, the Cardinals pushed their probables back a day. That means Matthew Liberatore gets the ball in the series opener opposite Misiorowski. Liberatore, 26, hasn’t quite panned out as the top prospect he once was, with a 4.64 ERA and 4.28 FIP over 385 2/3 career innings. He’s made 10 starts this year, with a 4.70 ERA, 4.85 FIP, and 43 strikeouts over 51 2/3 innings. He went 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision his last time out, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with nine strikeouts against the Pirates. A common opponent for Milwaukee, Liberatore has made 11 career appearances (four starts), spanning 28 2/3 innings with a 1.26 ERA, 31 strikeouts, and a perfect 4-0 record.Tuesday, May 26 @ 6:40 p.m.: LHP Kyle Harrison (5-1, 1.77 ERA, 2.48 FIP) vs. RHP Michael McGreevy (3-3, 2.40 ERA, 4.03 FIP)As good as Miz has been, Harrison has been about as good. He’s made nine starts this season, with a sterling 1.77 ERA, 2.48 FIP, and 59 strikeouts across 45 2/3 innings. He’s won each of his last four decisions, and the Brewers have won in each of his last six starts, dating back to early April. He went seven scoreless against the Cubs in his last outing, allowing just two hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts at Wrigley. This marks Harrison’s first career appearance against the Cardinals.McGreevy, 25, is in his third MLB season with the Cardinals after being drafted in the first round out of UC Santa Barbara in 2021. Though he has a 2.40 ERA, his underlying 4.03 FIP is less than sterling, though that’s at least in part due to low strikeout numbers, with just 37 across 56 1/3 innings. He went five innings in a loss against the Pirates in his last start, allowing three runs on 10 hits and a walk, striking out just one. This marks McGreevy’s first career start against Milwaukee.Wednesday, May 27 @ 12:40 p.m.: TBD vs. RHP Dustin May (3-5, 5.00 ERA, 3.90 FIP)Assuming the Brewers are following their recent rotation, this would be Logan Henderson’s game. Henderson has made five starts this season, totaling 23 innings with seven runs allowed (2.74 ERA, 2.39 FIP), striking out 30. The 24-year-old righty went five scoreless against the Dodgers his last time out, allowing three walks and two hits with seven strikeouts. This would mark Henderson’s first career appearance against St. Louis.May, 28, is now with his third team in St. Louis after agreeing to a one-year, $12.5 million contract in the offseason. A former third-round pick by the Dodgers, May has made 10 starts for the Cards this year, with a 5.00 ERA, 3.90 FIP, and 42 strikeouts across 54 innings. He took the loss in his last appearance, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks, striking out seven over 5 1/3 innings against the Pirates. May’s only career appearance came all the way back in 2021 while with the Dodgers. He went just 1 2/3 innings in that one, allowing a run on one hit (a solo homer) and a walk, striking out three. How to Watch & ListenMonday, May 25: Brewers TV; listen via radio on the Brewers Radio Network (620 WTMJ in Milwaukee)Tuesday, May 26: Brewers TV; listen via radio on the Brewers Radio Network (620 WTMJ in Milwaukee)Wednesday, May 27: Brewers TV; listen via radio on the Brewers Radio Network (620 WTMJ in Milwaukee)PredictionThe Brewers hit a bit of a roadblock with the Dodgers over the weekend, but I expect they’ll bounce back against the Cardinals at home this week. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBuccaneers coach makes incredibly bold Rueben Bain Jr. predictionBuccaneers coach makes incredibly bold Rueben Bain Jr. prediction originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The idea for first-round draft picks is that they become key cogs on the team they are drafted to, and for Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge Rueben Bain Jr., he's expected to fill a huge need for Todd Bowles. But as we know, just because a player is a first-round pick, it isn't a guarantee that they will become stars, so there is an element of luck and where you get drafted, such as Patrick Mahomes. Had he gone to the New York Jets, would he be what he is today? Not likely. As for Bain Jr., he'll be expected to come to Bowles' defense and make an immediate impact from Day 1, and outside linebackers coach/run game coordinator Larry Foote has big hopes for what Rueben can become in the NFL."Off the film, if you had to bet, he's going to be a star," Foote said via the Pewter Report. "The way he plays the game, he's explosive, plays with great leverage and it's hard to block those guys."MORE:ESPN questions Chiefs' non-decision on key position group this offseasonWill Bain Jr. become a star?It all depends on your definition of a star in the NFL, but going by his college stats and tape, many firmly believe that Rueben's game will translate into the pros. Now, what he's asked to do by Bowles will also be a factor, but as far as a pure pass rusher, many have an idea of what Bain can produce. If he manages eight or more sacks in his first year, that's a great start, but to be a star, you have to produce to that level year after year.Putting a lot of pressure on a rookie isn't ideal, and while some rise to that challenge, others don't, and it will be interesting to see how Bain Jr. fares in his NFL career.More NFL news:Browns' Todd Monken goes off on QBs for embarrassing moment at OTAsESPN questions Bills move for star WRBills' biggest offseason question aimed at 1 key playerRavens praised for signing 'ageless wonder' this offseasonBrowns QB Deshaun Watson facing career-saving season in 20260 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMamelodi Sundowns win African Champions League titleMamelodi Sundowns were victorious on their return to the African Champions League final, having lost last season's showpiece tie against Egyptian side Pyramids [Getty Images]South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns won their second African Champions League title as a 1-1 draw away against AS FAR proved enough to clinch a 2-1 aggregate victory in the final.Sundowns took a 1-0 lead into the second leg in Rabat thanks to Aubrey Modiba's strike last Sunday, but Mohamed Hrimat levelled the tie five minutes before half-time from the penalty spot after Divine Lunga had fouled Reda Slim. However, in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time, Teboho Mokoena rattled a brilliant half-volley in off the underside of the bar to equalise on the night and restore his side's advantage on aggregate. With away goals still used in the African Champions League, the midfielder's strike crucially left Moroccans AS FAR needing two more goals to lift the trophy. The hosts had a glorious opportunity to revive their hopes in the 77th minute after being awarded another penalty, yet Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams brilliantly saved Hrimat's second attempt from 12 yards.Jalal-Eddine El Khfiyef fired over late on for AS FAR and Sundowns saw out eight minutes of added time to claim their first continental title since their maiden triumph in 2016.The South Africans, beaten in the final by Egyptian outfit Pyramids last season, pick up a record $6m (£4.49m) in prize money as well as booking a place at the 2029 Fifa Club World Cup.Home crowd disappointedThe vast majority of a near-capacity crowd at the 70,000-seat Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium were hoping to see AS FAR win African football's top club honour for the first time since 1985, and they created an intimidating atmosphere for Sundowns in the early stages.Yet there were few clear sights at goal before Somalian referee Omar Artan was sent to his pitch-side monitor by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), and he eventually decided Sundowns left-back Lunga had caught winger Slim on the back of his leg while attempting a clearance.Hrimat calmly converted, sending Williams the wrong way, but Sundowns brilliantly equalised before the break when Brayan Leon's cross was flicked on by Tashreeq Matthews and Mokoena flashed in a right-footed effort from 15 yards. The goal subdued the home fans until AS FAR were presented with an opportunity to retake the lead on the night when they were awarded a second penalty. That, once again, came following a VAR review after Williams spilled a low shot from Ahmed Hammoudan and then brought down Youssef El Fahli as he attempted to gather the loose ball.South Africa international Williams, who saved four penalties in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final shootout against Cape Verde, redeemed himself as he dived to his left and managed to divert Hrimat's attempt over the bar with his left arm.His save sapped the energy out of AS FAR and their supporters slowly departed in the closing stages, leaving Sundowns to lift the trophy in a near-empty stadium bowl.Their victory came a day after Miguel Cardoso's side missed out on the domestic title to Orlando Pirates, bringing an end to their eight-year reign as champions of South Africa.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTwins complete three-game sweep over Red Sox with 6-5 win at soggy Fenway ParkBOSTON (AP) — Brooks Lee hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in a three-run sixth inning, and the Minnesota Twins held off the Boston Red Sox 6-5 at soggy Fenway Park to complete a three-game sweep for their 10th victory in 14 games. It was Minnesota’s first three-game sweep in Fenway since June 13 to 15 in 1994.Most of the game was played in a steady rain with the infield becoming very sloppy in the ninth.Pinch runner Connor Wong, the potential tying run, was cut down at the plate by shortstop Ryan Kreidler’s relay on Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s double for the second out in ninth.Willson Contreras hit his team-leading 11th homer, a two-run shot, and Masataka Yoshida added a solo one for his first for the Red Sox, who fell to a majors’ worst 8-17 at home. The Twins moved ahead 6-4 when Austin Martin’s RBI double tied it before Lee singled, with Martin scoring the second run when catcher Carlos Narváez dropped what looked like an easy out at the plate.Bailey Ober (6-2) earned the win, giving up four runs in five innings. Travis Adams got the final out with two on for his first career save.Tayron Guerrero (0-1) allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Contreras’ drive went into the Green Monster seats before Marcelo Mayer, making his first career start at shortstop, delivered an RBI single to make it 4-3 in the fourth inning. Coming in 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA in his previous three starts, Boston’s Sonny Gray gave up three runs in four innings and was removed after 75 pitches. He took Josh Bell’s hard grounder off his right heel in the third but was only visited briefly by a trainer and interim manager Chad Tracy.Up nextTwins: RHP Zebby Matthews (1-1, 1.38 ERA) is set to start the opener of a four-game series at the White Sox on Monday. LHP Anthony Kay (3-1, 4.27) is scheduled for Chicago.Red Sox: Haven’t announced a starter for Tuesday’s opener of a three-game series at Fenway against Atlanta. ___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIs Texas Tech softball more equipped than ever to win the national title? | GieseEleven months ago, the rest of the college softball world decided the feel-good story of Texas Tech becoming a major player had taken a step too far.Signing NiJaree Canady, one of the greatest players to ever step onto a field, to a record-breaking, history-making NIL deal was one thing. What the Red Raiders did after coming one game short of winning the national title, though, was too much to bear. It's been one of the main talking points around the sport. Texas Tech wasn't the plucky underdog anymore. In a few weeks' time, the Red Raiders had become the arch enemy of a sacred sport not to be tarnished. Before the transfer portal became a thing, players transferred. They've done so at a much greater rate since the birth of NIL, and some ― the pearl-clutching, old guard of the world ― are offended at the very notion that what has made football and basketball such money-making sports could find its way into softball.Despite what some networks and outlets would like to tell you, none of this is new. It's been the case since last June when Mia Williams and Taylor Pannell, Jasmyn Burns and Kaitlyn Terry signed on to be Red Raiders, the team taking one final chance to give Canady the national championship a storied career such as hers deserves. But those elder statesmen and women of the game had a few cards they could play. Refusing to schedule Texas Tech was a move that most (not all) of the power players made, and it worked. The Red Raiders' RPI wasn't strong enough to give them a home Super Regional. All according to the plan.Problem with those plans is you can only account for so much. Sure, you can avoid the Red Raiders in February and March. When postseason play comes around, you have to face them whether you like it or not. Florida got a crack at getting even with their departed teammate Williams, hitting her with pitches on five separate occasions in the three-game series. Williams, and the Red Raiders, had the last laugh, bashing five home runs in the decisive third game on Sunday to return to the Women's College World Series. It didn't end at Williams, though. Tempers flared a number of times through the weekend, on the field and in the stands. No half measures were taken by Texas Tech to get the job done, utilizing the loophole in the rulebook to alternate between Canady and Terry in the circle as often as they saw fit. That's Gerry Glasco, using whatever he can to his advantage. Even powerful teams need to get creative from time to time.It could've been over there but, after Florida head coach Tim Walton was ejected in the fifth inning, his players refused to gather up for the customary handshake line with the Red Raiders. It's a tradition that, frankly, has run its course, but the message was clear. You may have beaten us, humiliated us on our home field, but we still don't like you.Talking about that sort of animosity and experiencing it firsthand are two different things. The SEC collusion to keep Texas Tech off the schedule was done in the shadows, behind closed doors, away from the players' eyes and ears. Most of the mudslinging was done through anonymous sources. It's hard to get a firm grasp on what it really means until it gets brought to your face. One of the few concerns about the Red Raiders this year has been a lack of energy. Makes sense when games are out of hand in their favor, but on the few occasions things haven't gone well, they haven't been able to flip that switch. The Gators gave them ample reason to get into it in Game 3. Plunking Williams was the start. Seeing her wallop a no-doubt home run was another. Having Victoria Valdez get a warning was gravy.A tough three-game series in sweltering heat with 90% of the audience openly rooting for your downfall can be a lot to handle. That the Red Raiders used it to their advantage, refusing to budge in the wake of adversity, is exactly what the team needed to endure. The Big 12 is competitive, to be sure. None of Texas Tech's conference mates had the same sort of disdain for the Red Raiders as the rest of the WCWS field will have. We won't even get into what'll happen if Texas Tech and Tennessee do match up in Oklahoma City, though they may need to call in the National Guard for that one.Has Texas Tech been as perfect as expected? Hardly. Canady and Terry have both been sporadic in the circle as of late. That came to a head in Game 3 against the Gators. The upside for Tech is this is why this team was put together the way it was. During last year's run to the national championship game, Canady needed to be nearly perfect for Texas Tech to have a chance. Now she has an array of hitting machines backing her up if she's off her game. They were needed to fend off the Gators and will be crucial if the college version of the Los Angeles Dodgers are going to finish the job.Texas Tech's path back to OKC wasn't the smoothest. All that matters is it's back, and it sees what everyone was saying: the only people who want them to win it all are in their own locker room. Almost everyone else wants them to fail to prove some sort of point. The rest of the country is going to keep the same energy they'd had for Texas Tech over the last 11 months. The Red Raiders have their own energy they can provide because of it.This article originally appeared on Lubbock Avalanche-Journal: Texas Tech softball hardened by critics, ready for Women's College World Series0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid star reacts to impending summer exit – “It’s been a very special journey”Real Madrid star reacts to impending summer exit – “It’s been a very special journey”Real Madrid ended their 2025-26 season with a 4-2 victory over Athletic Club on Saturday, in what was a match of farewells. Captain Dani Carvajal bowed out after 13 years at the Bernabeu, while head coach Alvaro Arbeloa also said goodbye after confirming earlier in the week that he will not continue in his position – and the third person departing is David Alaba, whose contract is also not being renewed. It’s been a difficult couple of seasons for Alaba, but on the whole, his 2021 move from Bayern Munich has been a successful one. The Austrian defender has been a favourite with the club’s supporters, and after the Athletic match ended on Saturday, he delivered a short speech to them, as per Marca.“I am very grateful, we have had many successes, also moments like when I broke my knee but they have always been with me, in my heart, I want to say thank you very much to all the team, the staff, coaches, the president… and of course my family. It’s been a very special journey, I can’t describe my feelings.”Alaba deserved more from Real Madrid spellAlaba had a positive first two seasons at Real Madrid, but ever since tearing his ACL in December 2023, he’s struggled to get back to anywhere near his best. He managed only 47 appearances across all competitions during the final three seasons of his Bernabeu stay, with regular injuries plaguing him.Had he not suffered that terrible injury in the match against Villarreal in 2023, Alaba would have got so much more out of his Real Madrid career. Still, he walks away with two La Liga titles, two Champions League winner’s medal and a Copa del Rey, which he will look back on fondly in the years to come. But for now, he will turn his attention towards the World Cup, where he will represent Austria.0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

If the Spurs are to have a legitimate chance to win the series, they will have to even things up on their home floor tonight as two of the final three matchups are in Oklahoma City.Despite getting out to 15-0 start in Game 3, the Spurs dropped a second consecutive game after Victor Wembanyama carried them to victory in Game 1 with 41 points and 24 rebounds. Wembanyama averaged more than 20 boards in the first two games, but had only four total rebounds and no offensive rebounds in Game 3.
