SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYankees' 'gifted' shortstop skyrockets in latest top prospect rankingsYankees' 'gifted' shortstop skyrockets in latest top prospect rankings originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Yankees may have a star in the making. While Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero are taking care of shortstop duties in the Majors, a soon-to-be 21-year-old middle infielder is waiting patiently for a Major League opportunity. New York's No. 1-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline, shortstop George Lombard Jr., is in Triple-A and approaching his first promotion to the big leagues. After previously ranking 24th on The Athletic's Keith Laws' preseason top 50 prospect rankings, Lombard has skyrocketed to No. 6. "He’s a gifted shortstop and a 55 to 60 runner who has enough power to get to 15-20 homers in time," Law wrote about Lombard's potential on Thursday. "Given his history of adjusting to new levels over long periods of time, I’m not worried about the slow start." After tearing up Double-A pitching, the Yankees promoted the right-handed hitting Lombard to Triple-A near the end of April. In 24 games, he's hitting .204/.364/.280 with five extra-base hits, including a homer, in 118 trips to the plate. MORE: A rookie named Santa had a 1-of-a-kind MLB debutThe Yankees believe he is prepared to be a Major League caliber player on defense, but there are hitting improvements they'd like to see him make. One aspect of Lombard's game to keep an eye on: He's drawn just one less walk (22) than he has struck out (23) with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Combining above-average plate discipline with a steady glove will help accelerate his jump to the Majors. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMUCLA's Karson Gordon just figured out how to cheat the transfer portalUCLA's Karson Gordon just figured out how to cheat the transfer portal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The college football transfer portal is closed, which means that NCAA players on the gridiron who want to transfer right now are out of luck.Well, unless you find a loophole. That's what UCLA's Karson Gordon has done.Gordon has entered the transfer portal as a track and field athlete, according to On3 Sports. The track and field portal opened on Thursday and will remain open until June 26, so Gordon could enter there.Even though that's the sport he's in for the portal, "Gordon can sign with any program as a two-sport athlete, meaning he can join any interested football program ahead of the upcoming Fall semester," according to On3 Sports. That article adds that Gordon does indeed intend to play football at the school he ends up at.Gordon was a high school quarterback in the Class of 2024, a three-star dual-threat QB.On UCLA's latest roster, Gordon is listed as a wide receiver. It's not clear where he'd play at a new school, although he definitely has speed, reportedly running as fast as 4.28 seconds.Gordon was a high school national champion in the triple jump at the 2023 Nike Outdoor Nationals, and he last competed for the Bruins in 2025 during the indoor season. He was meant to be a QB at UCLA, but when Nico Iamaleava came to town, that essentially pushed him to a position change. Now, it sounds like Gordon wants to be a quarterback elsewhere, and he'll use his prowess as a triple jumper to give him a transfer portal window that most college football players don't have access to.MORE: There's a 7th-grade hooper named Kobe Bryant0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMichigan Legend Jalen Rose Fires Shot at Tom Izzo, Michigan StateJalen Rose is never one to miss an opportunity to defend Michigan basketball — especially when Tom Izzo is sitting nearby.During an appearance this week at the Mackinac Policy Conference alongside Dusty May and Izzo, the Michigan legend took a playful but pointed jab at Michigan State while celebrating the Wolverines’ 2026 national championship season.“I just need this room to give us a hand clap for the 2026 national champion University of Michigan Wolverines,” Rose said. “And again, shout out to the 2026 national champions. ‘Cause I don’t know about Tom Izzo, but I woke up feeling like a national champion this morning. I really did.”That line quickly drew laughs from the crowd and immediately added another memorable moment to one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries.Dusty May Embracing the SpotlightMichigan’s national title run has completely changed the energy surrounding the program. With Detroit set to host the 2027 Final Four at Ford Field, May made it clear that Michigan sees a major opportunity ahead.“It seems like Detroit is ready to capitalize and take advantage of this situation,” May said. “This is the greatest event in sports, and so we have to be ready to capitalize.”The Wolverines are already preparing for life after losing several key frontcourt stars to the NBA Draft, including projected first-round selections Yaxel Lendeborg, Aday Mara, and Morez Johnson Jr.Still, May sounded confident in Michigan’s ability to reload through the transfer portal and returning talent.Fab Five Banners Could ReturnOne of the biggest storylines to emerge from the event involved the possible return of the Fab Five banners to Crisler Center.May once again hinted that the banners honoring the iconic early-1990s teams could soon return.“We look forward to adding another banner in Crisler with Jalen and the guys on it sooner than later,” May said. That moment would carry enormous significance for Michigan basketball history, considering the banners were removed in 2002 following the Ed Martin scandal.Rivalry Fuel Added AgainEven years later, the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry clearly still burns strong.Rose’s comments were playful, but they also reflected the confidence currently surrounding Michigan basketball after its championship run under May.And judging by the reaction online, Wolverines fans absolutely loved every second of it.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPochettino’s AC Milan talks come at awkward time for USMNT ahead of World CupPhoto by Terence Lewis/Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesMauricio Pochettino has spoken with AC Milan about their vacant head coaching job while preparing to lead the United States men’s national team into the 2026 World Cup.The USMNT coach remains under contract with U.S. Soccer through the tournament, which the United States will co-host this summer. That does not point to a break with U.S. Soccer. It does, however, bring the question of Pochettino’s future back into focus before the biggest tournament in USMNT history.Pochettino’s Milan talks matter because of the timingPhoto by Jamie Sabau/Getty ImagesESPN reports that Pochettino has spoken with AC Milan about their vacant head coaching job.The timing is the key point. This has emerged before the World Cup, not after it.There is no verified claim that Pochettino has agreed a deal with Milan. There is also no verified claim that he has told U.S. Soccer he wants to leave. What stands out is more measured than that. The coach hired to lead the USMNT into a home World Cup is now being linked with one of Europe’s biggest club jobs before the tournament begins.U.S. Soccer hired Pochettino for this World Cup cycleU.S. Soccer appointed Pochettino with two years to prepare the USMNT for the 2026 World Cup.His contract with U.S. Soccer runs through the World Cup, so there is a clear endpoint to the current arrangement. That does not mean talks with Milan automatically threaten his role. It does mean the conversation around his future has moved from background noise into public view. For U.S. Soccer, the challenge is not only whether Pochettino stays focused. It is whether the federation can keep the message clear while attention grows around what comes next.Milan’s project explains the appeal, but not the outcomeAccording to the ESPNFC post, Milan plan to invest heavily in youth while building a competitive squad. The same report says that type of project appeals to Pochettino. That distinction matters. It explains why the link is credible without proving where Pochettino will be working after the World Cup.Milan can offer scale, history and a major squad-building brief. That makes the reported interest understandable from a football perspective. But the available reporting stops short of a decision. That line should not be crossed. The fairest reading is uncertainty, not panicThe USMNT do not need this story to become bigger than the tournament itself. They also do not need to pretend it is irrelevant.Pochettino remains the head coach, and his contract still points to the World Cup as the immediate endpoint. Milan’s interest sits around that reality rather than replacing it.Right now, this is not a crisis. It is a question of timing and clarity. The story is not that Pochettino is leaving. It is that questions about his future have arrived before he has finished the job he was hired to do.Read more:MLS icon claims ‘Portugal are at their best’ with Cristiano Ronaldo off the teamRicardo Pepi gets a different World Cup call as USMNT redemption stories come full circleStephen A. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMike Brown’s Trust in Knicks’ Bench Has Been Pivotal to NBA Finals RunOne of the most important hallmarks of basketball is its collaborative nature; nothing can be accomplished alone. Teams may have stars entrusted by the organization to guide them to the top, but winning is a group effort. When the going gets tough, it is important to know others can be relied upon to step up. While Jalen Brunson has been the star of his squad throughout the season, his supporting cast is a major reason the Knicks clinched their first NBA Finals berth since 1999. Mike Brown’s Bench PhilosophyAn NBA season can be a grueling marathon that takes a toll on players, especially stars. Utilizing a secondary unit is crucial in preventing stars from getting worn out as the playoffs continue. Throughout the 2026 playoffs, the New York Knicks have received contributions from up and down their roster. The team has had to sacrifice usage, shots, and minutes — but has maintained belief in one another. The support in the Knicks’ locker room isn’t just among the players; Head Coach Mike Brown also infuses it. Brown cites legendary championship coaches like Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr for teaching him the value of going deep into a team’s bench. Brown was an assistant coach to Kerr for six seasons and was a part of three of the squad’s championships. He also spent three years as a coaching assistant to Popovich, winning a title with the Spurs in 2003.Brown knows the importance of guys coming off the bench, having had a front row seat to Andre Iguodala and Manu Ginobili.Over the course of nine seasons on Pop and Kerr’s staffs, he picked up an important message from the head coaches: keep the bigger picture in mind. Inject confidence into role players over the course of the regular season so they are ready and confident to provide a boost in the postseason. “They both always used to say, ‘It’s not about now, it’s about the postseason. It’s not about now, it’s about the postseason,’” Brown said.“And you keep guys engaged by doing that. You develop not just a bench but a team as well, because guys get used to playing with other guys just in case someone goes down.” Mike Brown credits the likes of Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich with demonstrating the importance of going deep into your bench during the season:"They both always used to say, 'it's not about now, it's about the postseason.'" pic.twitter.com/s7Z64Ciykm— SNY Knicks (@sny_knicks) May 24, 2026A Change in WaysMike Brown’s philosophy is a stark contrast to that of the Knicks’ previous head coach, Tom Thibodeau. Thibodeau notoriously ran his stars into the ground, forcing extra mileage on their bodies. The starters-heavy approach may help accumulate wins in the regular season, but can often lead to an empty tank when the playoffs roll around.Brunson’s regular-season minute average has remained similar from last season with Thibs to this season under Brown. But other starters, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart have all seen a substantial decrease in minutes this season. Iron-Man Bridges’ minutes dipped 12%, going from 37 minutes last season to 32.8 this season. The biggest difference has come in Hart’s court time — a staggering 20% plummet from 37.6 to 30.2 minutes. Defensive specialists are often tasked with doing the nitty-gritty work and providing some offense, therefore, playing large minutes becomes even more taxing. This season, Brown has leaned more heavily into the team’s bench. One key standout is Landry Shamet, who was also on the team last year. Brown increased his minutes by nearly 50% from the prior season, making use of his two-way abilities. As a career 38.6% three-point shooter, his marksmanship from beyond the arc keeps defenses honest. On the other end of the floor, his defensive skillset eases the load off of Bridges, Anunoby, and Hart. He also boasts the highest net rating of the 2025-26 Conference Finals. SHAMET WAS ON FIRE IN THE EAST FINALS HE WENT 11-FOR-12 FROM 3 New York punches their ticket to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999! pic.twitter.com/AoGQ5yi410— NBA (@NBA) May 26, 2026In the Eastern Conference Finals, Mike Brown’s decision to leverage his bench paid dividends. Shamet scorched from beyond the arc, going 11-for-12 over the course of the series. Against the 76ers in the semifinals round, he went 7-for-12 from deep.Fifth-year guard Miles McBride has also provided a boost, shooting 11-for-26 and 11-for-23 on threes in the Hawks and 76ers series, respectively. Heavy Minutes Taking a Toll on PlayersThe impetus behind playing reserves isn’t just because Knicks fans had griped with Thibs about it; one of his players also pushed for the change.Mikal Bridges once called out Thibodeau to turn to his bench more and take it easy on starters’ minutes. He believed other players on the roster were more than capable of holding their own in a game.“Sometimes it’s not fun on the body,” Bridges said. “We’ve got a lot of good guys on this team that can take away minutes. Which helps the defense, helps the offense, helps tired bodies being out there and giving up all these points. It helps just keeping fresh bodies out there.”As someone who has never missed a game in his eight-year NBA career, no one cares more about player health and durability than Bridges. It is also fitting that, at the time, Bridges mentioned Shamet as someone who deserved more opportunities. “Sometimes you’ve got to tell him (Thibodeau), like Landry, for example, or somebody — keep him out there, they’re playing well.”Thanks to the increased reliance on the second-string unit under Brown, the 29-year-old has now gotten his wish. The adjusted minutes load is also part of why Bridges has looked fresh this playoffs and found an offensive groove. His points per game in the playoffs have slightly dropped from last season, but he is having the most efficient shooting postseason of his career. What’s more is that his turnovers have also decreased, and he is averaging 7.5 fewer minutes compared to last playoffs. The Bench is Necessary in the FinalsRegardless of who the Knicks face in the NBA Finals, there will be no shortage of offensive and defensive threats on the other side. Role players can often swing a game or two in big playoff moments to push their team over the top. Brunson, Towns, and the team’s starters will no doubt factor heavily in whether or not the team wins a championship. But the willingness to look beyond just the team’s stars just may be the reason the Knicks are the last ones standing. The post Mike Brown’s Trust in Knicks’ Bench Has Been Pivotal to NBA Finals Run appeared first on The Lead.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. With the elimination of the spring transfer portal, college football rosters have been just about set since the end of the winter — or are they?UCLA QB/WR Karson Gordon found a creative way to still enter the transfer portal, using his track prowess to enter as a two-sport athlete despite the college football portal having been closed for months. After two seasons with the Bruins but no playing time, Gordon is now set to move on in unusual fashion. Here's a look at how Gordon skirted the typical transfer portal window and whether he can still play football at his next destination.MORE:Who would a 24-team College Football Playoff benefit most?Karson Gordon transferGordon is entering the track and field transfer portal as a two-sport athlete and intends to continue playing football at his next school, according to On3's Pete Nakos.Gordon is a legitimate track and field athlete. He won the triple jump national championship in high school at the Nike Outdoor Nationals and last competed as a triple jumper during the 2025 indoor season at UCLA.Still, Gordon is looking to resume his football career at his next stop after spending two seasons on the bench at UCLA. Gordon redshirted his freshman season but didn't play in 2025, either. When is college track transfer portal? The track and field transfer portal opened on Thursday, May 28, and will remain open until Friday, June 26. When did college football transfer portal close? The college football portal was open from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16.The absence of a spring portal prevented situations like Nico Iamaleava's from arising this year; the UCLA QB tried to renegotiate a bigger NIL deal with Tennessee just before the spring portal opened and was told to transfer before ultimately landing with the Bruins.A year later, Iamaleava's teammate has found a much more creative way to enter the portal in the spring.MORE:Ranking every SEC starting quarterback for 2026Karson Gordon statsGordon has yet to appear in a game in his college football career. MORE:Ranking every Big Ten starting quarterback for 2026Karson Gordon track careerGordon is a triple jumper and last competed for UCLA during the 2025 indoor season. After committing to UCLA in 2023, Gordon told On3 that the school's track and field program was a major factor in his decision. "UCLA just has everything, honestly. Big-time football, moving to the Big Ten next year, with top-tier competition. Their track team is always very competitive in the national scene," he said. Chip Kelly also said Gordon's track and field background was something the football program had its eye on."Karson’s the state of Texas triple jump champion, I think he’s gone over 52-plus feet in the triple jump which I think is the state record," Kelly said. "So he’s a tremendous athlete but a really sharp kid at a high school where they really do a lot of really neat things and do a lot that’s put on the quarterback’s plate."Kelly would bolt UCLA to become Ohio State's offensive coordinator after the 2023 season and never got the opportunity to coach Gordon.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

Earlier in the season the club triggered an extension in Alisson Becker’s contract, but that has not stopped rumours swirling of a move away for the Brazilian.Juventus have been the most heavily linked side and at one point were confident of securing the 33-year-old's signature. Now though nothing is certain, and speculation is beginning to rise that it could instead be Giorgi Mamardashvili who leaves Anfield this summer.Third choice Freddie Woodman impressed in his limited opportunities this season but is now into the final weeks of his contract.Three Italian teams battling for Liverpool goalkeeperAs talk of Alisson spending another season with Liverpool intensifies, rumours of his deputy’s dissatisfaction do too.Mamardashvili wants to be a first-choice and, if Alisson stays, could look to move out on loan to secure guaranteed first-team football. With the long-term future of the club in mind, Richard Hughes has begun to look for a loan move for the Georgian ‘keeper, and three Italian clubs have been offered the chance to sign him. That’s according to transfer insider Nicolo Schira, who claims that Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Juventus have all been offered the chance to sign Mamardashvili on loan this summer.Negotiations over a move for Alisson between Liverpool and Juventus cannot be as advanced as some Italian reports are claiming if the Reds have now offered Juve their back-up ‘keeper instead. If Mamardashvili does leave on loan, the Reds will need to consider who can step up to replace him as Alisson’s deputy, with Armin Pecsi and Vitezslav Jaros both potential options from within the club.Alternatively, Liverpool could turn to the transfer market to try and find an experienced alternative.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRed Sox have baseball’s No. 3 overall prospect in latest rankingRed Sox shortstop prospect Franklin Arias is ranked No. 3 overall on Keith Law’s latest top 50 MLB prospect list released Thursday for The Athletic. The 20-year-old Venezuela native is dominating Double-A pitching. He is batting .343 with a .415 on-base percentage, .664 slugging percentage and 1.079 OPS in 38 games (164 plate appearances) for the Sea Dogs. He leads all Red Sox minor leaguers with 12 home runs. He also has eight doubles, one triple, 31 RBIs and 29 runs.Law ranks only Brewers shortstop prospect Jesús Made and Athletics shortstop prospect Leo De Vries ahead of Arias. Law wrote, “Arias has already set a new career high in homers, ... but more impressive is how difficult it has been to strike him out: he has just 19 strikeouts on the season, a 12.3 percent rate, with a whiff rate on pitches in the zone of just 13 percent this year. Arias is very likely to stick at shortstop with excellent hands and a plus arm, with 25+ homer upside.”Arias had never hit more than nine home runs in any minor league season, but he gained at least nine pounds in the offseason. The two biggest goals entering this past offseason were adding weight and hitting the ball in the air more consistently.Law ranks 21-year-old right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson No. 21.Eyanson has a 1.35 ERA in eight starts between High-A and Double-A this season. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMLB owners have proposed a salary cap for the first time since baseball's 1994-95 strikeMajor League Baseball owners made their long-expected salary cap proposal to the players’ association on Thursday, a system the union has vowed never to accept, setting the sides on course for a confrontation that threatens the 2027 season and perhaps beyond.Baseball owners haven’t proposed a firm cap since 1994. Their effort prompted a 7 1/2-month strike that forced the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years. The proposal would cap spending in 2027 at $245.3 million, with a salary floor of $171.2 million.“Our salary cap and floor proposal levels the playing field while sharing baseball revenue with the players 50/50 as we grow the game together,” MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said in a statement. “Further, by sharing media revenue equally as part of our proposal, we can address another top fan concern of local TV blackouts.”Management gave the union its latest plan during a bargaining session at the commissioner's office, one day after the union made its economic proposal. Owners say a cap is needed to improve competitive balance and restrain the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and other wealthy teams from assembling starrier rosters than their smaller-market brethren.Players want expanded free agency and salary arbitration rights along with almost doubling the major league minimum, increasing the money high-revenue teams share with the less-wealthy clubs and establishing penalties for teams that drop below payroll floors.Baseball's current five-year deal, agreed to in March 2022 after a 99-day lockout, expires Dec. 2. While a lockout next winter is expected, talks are not likely to intensify until late February or early March 2027, when the possibilities of losing regular-season games and revenue near. If regular-season games are lost, negotiations may become a standoff of which side can tolerate the most economic loss.Other U.S. major sports leagues operate under a cap. The NBA had a cap in its initial season in 1946-47, then dropped that and began its modern version in 1984-85. NFL players and owners adopted a cap for the 1994 season, and the NHL did so in 2005-06 after a lockout wiped out the entire 2004-05 season. The Dodgers shattered MLB's spending record with a combined $515 million in payroll and luxury tax last year en route to their second straight World Series title. Los Angeles' total was seven times the $68.7 million payroll of the Miami Marlins, the lowest-spending team, and more than the payrolls of the bottom six clubs combined.Players say a cap would hurt them and enrich owners, and they say they will never agree to one. Without a cap, MLB stars have landed lucrative, guaranteed contracts that outpace what the biggest stars in other U.S. sports leagues make. Juan Soto's $765 million, 15-year contract with the Mets is believed to be the biggest ever in team sports and is far greater than the largest deals in the NFL (Patrick Mahomes at $450 million over 10 years) and NBA (Jayson Tatum at $314 million over five years).MLB's last salary cap proposal in 1994 offered players a 50-50 split of revenue in a system that would have forced teams to maintain payrolls of 84-110% of the average. Salary arbitration would have been eliminated and the threshold for free agency would have been lowered from six years’ major league service to four — with the provision that a player’s former club could match any offer until he had six years.MLB's offer came on June 14 that year, and players struck on Aug. 12. MLB withdrew the cap proposal the following Feb. 6 after pressure by the National Labor Relations Board. The strike ended on March 31 after U.S. District Judge Sonia Sotomayor — now a Supreme Court Justice — issued an injunction restoring the work rules of the expired labor contract. Two days later, owners accepted the union's offer to return to work without an agreement. A deal wasn't reached until 1997.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHouston Rockets 2025-26 player grades: Aaron HolidayAfter spending his first five seasons with four different teams, Aaron Holiday has played the last three years for the Houston Rockets as a backup point guard. Holiday has consistently averaged 12-16 minutes per game throughout his career apart from his sophomore season, when he started 33 games for the Indiana Pacers. This included the 2025-26 season, where Holiday averaged 5.5 points, 1.1 assists, one rebound and 0.5 steals in 13.7 minutes. Across the board, Holiday's numbers were either marginally better or worse in every statistical category from a season ago, shooting percentages included. Although Holiday's defensive work rate is high, opposing teams often pick on him due to his size (6'0"). Despite an offseason injury to the expected starting point guard, Fred VanVleet, Holiday was unable to capitalize and earn a larger role. Holiday will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, casting doubt on his future with the team.Overall grade: CThis article originally appeared on Warriors Wire: Rockets 2025-26 player grades: Aaron Holiday0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPSA announces it's pausing new card submissions after seeing 20 percent spike with backlog already near 10MThe precipitous rise in card collecting in recent years has led to a lot more work for the PSA, the premier card-grading service. While the PSA has undoubtedly appreciated the rise in business, it’s reached a point where the company is getting overwhelmed with new requests. That hit a tipping point Thursday, as the PSA announced it would start pausing new card submissions following a recent influx that drove the company’s backlog to nearly 10 million cards. The PSA announced the news in a statement Thursday, saying it’s pausing multiple tiers of service on June 2 in an attempt to work through its current backlog. In the statement, the company said its grading output is at an all-time high, but even that’s not enough to keep up with new submissions. While our daily grading output is at an all-time high, with capacity up 5x since 2021, continuing to accept submissions at this breakneck pace would put more pressure on our operations and compromise the turnaround times of existing orders. To clear this bottleneck and protect the integrity of the PSA standard, we are taking a direct, proactive step. Effective Tuesday, June 2, 2026, we are temporarily pausing new submissions for the four Value service tiers: Value Bulk, Value, Value Plus, and Value Max.Card submissions won’t be paused for everyone, though. Per the statement, those who pay for higher-tier services will still be allowed to send in cards after June 2. Those tiers include “Regular, Express, Super Express, and Walk-Through and above,” per the company’s statement. Of that list, “regular” is the cheapest submission option. It costs $79.99 to use that service. Collectors who choose to use on of the PSA’s open services can expect longer turnaround times. The “regular” tier usually promises a 30-40 business day turnaround. That will jump up to 40-50 days or 50-60 days depending on the type of authentication involved. The PSA said it would reopen all tiers of service once its backlog was reduced to roughly 5 million. While the PSA did not put an exact date on it, the company estimated it would take roughly four months to accomplish that goal. TAG also suspends new submissions for certain tiers of serviceThe PSA was not the only card-grading service to suspend certain tiers of service Wednesday. TAG temporarily closed another tier of service Thursday, citing “incredible demand.”TAG did not announce when its tiers would re-open.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBills' Ed Oliver called 'really disruptive in new defense' by Jim LeonhardNew Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard met with the media during OTAs and talked about some of the ways his 3-4 hybrid scheme will reshape Buffalo's defensive identity. One Buffalo player who stands to benefit most from the front change is Ed Oliver, who was drafted 9th overall by Buffalo in 2019. The defensive tackle is adjusting to a completely different system under Leonhard and notes that the transition has been almost like starting over.“Everything I know and come to know, you just … yeah, throw all that out,” Oliver said to the media. “This is the new … like a breakup. Everything you did in the last relationship, throw that out of the way. That’s a whole other person. You’ve got to relearn.”The most significant schematic shift under Leonhard is happening in the trenches, where Buffalo operated for years out of a 4-3 or four-man front sub-packages under former head coach Sean McDermott. Now, the base defense will be a true 3—4.This means that Oliver won't purely be a downhill penetrator at the line anymore, as the 3-4 gives him more lateral freedom and two-gap opportunities. That change could unlock a new ceiling for the former top-10 NFL Draft pick."I think Ed's going to be really disruptive in this defense," Leonhard said to the press. "The base defense being more different for him than what it's been in the past, and in all reality, a little bit more freedom than he's had in the past. The sub-package things are a little bit more familiar to what they've done here from a front structure."Oliver sees the same thing in Leonhard's game film from his time with the Broncos.“I know it sounds cliché, but if you turn on the tape, the guy they had in Denver was pretty good,” he added. “And he looks like he’s playing pretty free. Hopefully, I can have that same success.”During the 2023 offseason, the Buffalo Bills signed Oliver to a four-year, $68 million contract extension that included $45 million guaranteed. He and the team also restructured his contract to open up additional cap space as they prepared for the 2026 campaign.Oliver’s 2025 season was limited to three regular‑season games and one playoff appearance due to a torn bicep. During that year, he underwent several surgeries to repair it.“It was hard. It was different,” Oliver said about that process. “I think that’s the first time I had two surgeries in one year … really three. I’m just happy to be healthy.”The emotional toll he experienced had an impact as well.“It sucks. It definitely does suck,” he said. “You start questioning yourself — why me? You go through the pity party, typical athlete thing. But hey, I’m healthy, and I don’t want to think about that. I’m thankful for my health now. Maybe this year will be different.”The good news is he says he’s now “fully 100% ready to go” and focused on thriving in Leonhard’s system. This article originally appeared on Bills Wire: Bills' Ed Oliver 'really disruptive in new defense' says Jim Leonhard0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDodgers’ Emerging Farm System Taking Over MLB RankingsKeith Law of The Athletic released a midseason Top 50 prospect update, which contains six Los Angeles Dodgers hopefuls. While no Dodgers rank within the Top 10, five of the six Dodgers prospects included in the list place within the Top 25—including three players who missed the Top 50 altogether in Law’s preseason ranking.Edgardo Quintero, No. 11Edgardo Quintero is the highest ranked Dodger on Law’s list, and just misses out on a Top 10 spot. He began the year in High-A after coming up towards the end of the 2025 season, and has serviceable numbers through his 37 games so far.He has two homers and 17 RBIs so far this season, posting. .721 OPS. While this is marginally worse than the five homers and .824 OPS he had in 32 games in High-A last season, Law still believes the 20-year-old has a bright future.“A slow start on paper for Quintero isn’t reflective of how he’s played; he’s at .265/.379/.360 in his return to High A — slightly below what he did at the same level in 32 games last year — but he’s still making excellent swing decisions and hitting the ball hard enough to stick with a forecast of future 55-60 power,” Law wrote.Josue De Paula, No. 13After a poor start in Double-A last season, Josue De Paula returned to Tulsa following a strong spring training and began hitting how everyone expected him to. He has a .899 OPS through 43 games this season, hitting six homers and driving in 40 runs in the process.MLB ranks the 6-foot-3 21-year-old as the Dodgers’ top prospect, and odds are he’ll be on the way up to Triple-A sooner rather than later is he continues swinging as he has so far in Double-A.Mar 4, 2026; Glendale, AZ, USA; Detailed view of the jersey of Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Josue De Paula (95) against Team Mexico during a spring training game at Camelback Ranch. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesMike Sirota, No. 18Mike Sirota, the return for the Dodgers’ trade of Gavin Lux two off-season ago, missed most of last season with a knee injury, but that hasn’t kept him from tearing up both High-A and Double-A in 2026.Sirota began the season with High-A Great Lakes, where he posted a 1.080 OPS through 35 games. He made the move to Double-A midway through May, and is batting .304 with an .883 OPS through six games so far. Sirota sat at No. 51 in Law’s last prospect ranking. River Ryan, No. 19River Ryan is a surprising name to see on a prospects list, seeing as how he made his MLB debut in 2024, but has missed the last couple of seasons with injury and still has his rookie eligibility.Ryan is extremely likely to return to the Dodgers by the end of the year, and has given the Dodgers a reason to pull him up through four starts in Triple-A. He has a 2.81 ERA through 16 innings pitched, and has struck out 21 batters as well. In Law’s last prospect ranking, Ryan was a few places behind Sirota at No. 55.James Tibbs III, No. 24James Tibbs III is another unexpected name for Law’s list, seeing as he didn’t even feature in the preseason ranking, but it’s no wonder he’s here considering his start to the season. Tibbs had two multi-homer games in Triple-A Oklahoma City’s first eight games of the season, as well as seven total. He’s since slowed down, but that’s not to say he’s been bad. Tibbs still has a 1.004 OPS with 12 homers—tied for fourth in the PCL—and 38 RBIs.Zyhir Hope, No. 28Zyhir Hope had a cup of tea in Double-A last season, playing in six games and recording as many hits, and has been even better in a larger sample size this season. He has nine homers already this season through 43 games, as well as a .810 OPS—his highest at any level since playing 54 games in Single-A in 2024.Which Dodgers prospect are you most excited about?0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHolly Holm reveals her raw reaction to Ronda Rousey’s lightning 17-second comeback and quick retirementPhoto by Harry How/Getty Images for NetflixHolly Holm has broken her silence on Ronda Rousey’s long-awaited return to MMA.Rousey was on top of the world in 2015 when Holly Holm stunned her with a head kick knockout at UFC 193, handing the bantamweight champion her first professional defeat.Just over a year later, Amanda Nunes finished what Holm started, stopping Rousey in under a minute. That bout would be the last time fans saw Rousey compete professionally – until now.Ronda Rousey made her comeback after a decade away from MMA, stepping back into the spotlight on a live Netflix broadcast earlier this month. The former UFC bantamweight champion didn’t waste any time, submitting Gina Carano in just 17 seconds at MVP MMA 1.Rousey then used her post-fight interview to confirm that she would be retiring again, stating that she wanted to focus on motherhood.Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images for NetflixHolly Holm responds to Ronda Rousey vs. Gina CaranoHolly Holm wasn’t surprised to see her old UFC rival look good after such a long layoff. She also wasn’t shocked when Rousey chose not to stick around the sport once more.Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Holm said: “I wasn’t shocked when she came back with this fight”. “I think maybe deep down, there’s just always this hunger that she had to want to get back in there and get a win, and it didn’t surprise me that she wanted to”“I think a lot of people, because of how her last two fights ended in knockouts, it’s so easy for people to forget everything before.“The reason why she was so dominant with what she did is because she was good at it, you know? She’s very good with her judo and she’s a master with the armbar. So, I wasn’t shocked that she came in and was able to win like that.“She’s a threat for anybody with that armbar you see right there. She’s a threat with anybody. She’s very good at it. So, more punches thrown, not letting [Rousey] get into that close range and all that, could have been different, you know? But she went in there, and she did her thing.“I highly doubt she’ll ever want a rematch. I always have said since the minute the last fight was over, I’ll always rematch her. That’s always been available.“But she wanted to come back and have this win and go back and enjoy and have a win like that. No hate from me. I hope she does well. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFrom 'Lobstah Poutine' to the 'Schwarbomb Sundae', the MLB concession battle is heating upFrom Arizona’s 128-ounce nacho bucket, Miami’s two-foot long flour tortilla known as the machete, Boston’s boat of lobstah poutine and Texas’ $40 26-inch wearable nacho sombrero, no concession item idea is too out of left field for Major League Baseball teams to try these days.In the TikTok and social media era, all 30 teams are not just competing for wins on the field, but also for who can come up with the most viral, over-the-top, attention-grabbing culinary creation in their ballpark concourses. Items like Citizen Bank Park’s Schwarbomb Sundae — a helmet filled with ice cream and a deep fried Uncrustable — or Citi Field’s Wok N’ Roll— which creates and sells a limited edition custom egg roll based on the opponent’s home town like this week’s Skyline Chili inspired dish from Cincinnati — are a bigger reason why some fans are coming to games ahead of the actual action on the field. The Schwarbomb Sundae is a helmet filled with ice cream and a deep fried Uncrustable. (Courtesy of Aramark)“We are truly trying to drive participation and encourage people to try something different,” Alicia Woznicki, the vice president of design and development for Aramark Sports and Entertainment, which runs the concessions for eight MLB teams, told Yahoo Sports. “Now people are coming to the ballpark looking for those items.”Data provided by the MLB players union to The Athletic last fall claimed that 39% of team revenue on average came from ticket and concession sales, a huge number considering MLB generated a record $12.1 billion in revenue in 2024.MLB drew more than 71.4 million fans to ballparks during the 2025 regular season. A 2025 study from frictionless checkout company Mashgin showed that the average MLB fan spent $56 on food and beverage per game during the 2024 season. A Sports Business Journal report claims that 73% of fans who attend live sporting events will spend more than $100 per outing on food and drink. While most teams lump in concession sales with overall ticket revenue, the Mets reported $38.3 million in concession sales alone last season, a 55% year-over-year increase. Aside from the New York Yankees, which founded Legends Global with the Dallas Cowboys and sold a majority stake in the hospitality company to private equity fund Sixth Street at a $1.35 billion valuation in 2021, nearly every MLB team outsources its concessions business to one of three multi-billion dollar behemoths. The aforementioned Aramark generated $18.5 billion in 2025 revenue; Levy Restaurants, which operates concessions for the Los Angeles Dodgers, both Chicago teams and both Beltway clubs, pulls in a reported $1.5 billion in annual revenue; and Delaware North, whose baseball clients include the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals, accumulated a reported $4.4 billion in 2025 revenue. In short, concessions are big business, which is part of the reason why teams are coming up with new and unique items to sell.As the collectible market has exploded in popularity since the pandemic, teams across the U.S. have started to sell various cocktail concoctions out of mini water coolers fans can then take home with them as souvenirs. The Dodgers are selling a $39.99 watermelon habanero margarita with a spice-dusted rim that are now being posted on eBay for nearly twice the original price. Red Sox cooler cups filled with Ketel One and lemonade are $20 and come in Fenway green or city connect yellow, while Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco and others all sell their own cooler cup iterations. Some teams take things even further, like the Mets do with a 32-ounce boozy bucket filled with either rum punch or Long Island iced tea cocktails topped with candy. “You'll see comments on social media of people who said they bought a ticket to the game just to go get that cup,” Woznicki said. “With baseball, when you have that more casual fan, you can still see the game but you’re not necessarily watching every single solitary play. In those scenarios, I do think food and beverage can be a driver to get people to actually attend an event.”That theory was put to the test in a major way at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on May 15, where the Washington Nationals took on the rival Baltimore Orioles and centered everything around one ballpark staple in a viral way. Last summer, the team’s business strategy, communications and marketing departments collaborated on an idea where for one night, the hot dog would be the vehicle to drive fan engagement, according to Nats president of business operations Jason Sinnarajah. All hot dogs would sell for $5. They had Levy create specialty hot dogs like one featuring spam and pineapple, a Korean-style dog topped with crushed hot Cheetos and deep fried hot dogs cut into shoestring fries and served with a ranch dipping sauce. At Fenway Park, fans can purchase "Lobstah Poutine," which comes in its own boat-shaped bowl.If that wasn’t enough, the first 20,000 fans received hats that said “bad day to be a hot dog,” a hit on social media, and had someone walk up to the pitcher’s mound and bite into the ceremonial first hot dog. The Nationals even introduced a new team mascot, a Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever mix named Natty, that night to cement the theme. Washington sold out the game, and fans purchased nearly 28,000 hot dogs, potentially bringing in new fans drawn in by all the glizzy madness. “We were excited to welcome these new fans and appeal to a younger audience looking for a good social experience,” Sinnarajah told Yahoo Sports. “The viral concession concepts, in particular the hot dog fries, were our attempt to create a social event and drive a packed house.”Washington epitomized what teams are trying to accomplish with specialty concession items and themed food nights: bring in new fans, bring in younger fans and have them engage with food offerings in a way the Nationals hope lures them back to the ballpark in the future.“The energy in the stands was off the charts,” Sinnarajah said. “It was a successful event and we will be looking to more events in the future to appeal to all segments of fans who will see this as a way that we’re leveling up the game day experience for them.”Aramark is already on the hunt for the next social media sensation. Rich Grab, the company’s director of culinary innovation, travels the country going out to eat while following the latest social culinary trends and working with the research and development team to see what might work in either general concessions or the premium luxury spaces. Woznicki hinted that a dirty soda bar concept or uncommon pairings like ice cream and red wine could soon be coming to a stadium near you. Now that teams are known for serving concession items they can’t get anywhere else, the pressure’s on all 30 teams and companies like Aramark, Levy’s and Delaware North to innovate year after year. While most fans will come to the ballpark to witness a Shohei Ohtani home run or a Paul Skenes strikeout, some are simply enticed by the thought of chowing down on a nacho sombrero, biting into a machete, or diving into some lobstah poutine.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAtlético Madrid use Antoine Griezmann example in Barcelona transfer talksAtlético Madrid use Antoine Griezmann example in Barcelona transfer talksAtlético Madrid are ready to point towards the fee paid by Barcelona for Antoine Griezmann in transfer talks over Julián Alvarez this summer. This comes amid the assurance that the Rojiblancos will not allow their star frontman to depart without a fight. The name of Argentine international Alvarez has of course reemerged as the dominant one in the media chatter in Spain’s capital across the day to date. After tying up an agreement for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, the aforementioned Barcelona are understood to be readying another big-money bid, on this occasion for Alvarez. If the latest word doing the rounds on Thursday is anything to go by, though, then the Blaugrana’s opening offer looks highly likely to be knocked back.As per a report from journalist Ben Jacobs, Atlético Madrid are ready to demand a sum well in excess of the €120 million they received from their La Liga rivals for Antoine Griezmann back in 2019.Barca, on the other hand, view €100 million as an appropriate starting point for negotiations.Conor Laird – GSFN0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal Are Ready To Finalise A Move For This Aston Villa Playmaker: Should Arteta Get Him On Board?Arsenal Are Ready To Finalise A Move For This Aston Villa Playmaker: Should Arteta Get Him On Board? In a recent report, Fichajes stated that Arsenal are ready to finalise a move for Aston Villa playmaker Morgan Rogers. It has been mentioned that the Gunners are prepared to intensify their efforts to land the English talent in this summer transfer window.Rogers’ Impressive Form In English FootballRogers has enjoyed another impressive campaign at the Midlands club as he has put in a series of eye-catching displays for them in the final third. He deserves a ton of credit for helping the Villans secure the UEFA Europa League trophy recently. The 23-year-old has found the back of the net 14 times and earned 12 assists in 55 matches for Aston Villa this season across multiple competitions. The English attacker is currently one of the best playmakers in the Premier League. Hence, it is no surprise that the Gunners are showing interest in recruiting him in this summer transfer window. His current contract at Villa Park will run out in the summer of 2031, which could make it tough for Arsenal to sign him on a cut-price deal later this year.ISTANBUL, TURKEY – MAY 20: Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa looks on during the UEFA Europa League Final 2026 match between SC Freiburg and Aston Villa FC at Besiktas Park on May 20, 2026 in Istanbul, Turkey. (Photo by Maja Hitij/Getty Images)Should Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta Get Rogers On Board?Rogers is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few impressive runs with it in and around the opponent’s penalty area. He can shoot the ball with power from long range and has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates to find the back of the net.The English talent is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a wide player on either flank if asked to do so. He already knows the Premier League well and won’t take much time to settle into life at Arsenal. We can expect Rogers to enhance the quality of Mikel Arteta’s frontline. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at the North London club in the coming seasons. At 23, Rogers has got his best years ahead of him, which makes him a worthy target for the Gunners to pursue this summer. He might even help Arsenal compete for some major silverware over the next few years. Therefore, Arteta should focus on getting him on board this off-season.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

APNEWS.COMAid supplies reach heart of Congo’s Ebola outbreak as WHO head travels to KinshasaWorkers offload medical and emergency supplies donated by European Union to support frontline workers in fighting Ebola upon arrival at the national airport in Bunia, Congo. Thursday, May 28, 2026. (AP Photo/Moses Sawasawa)2026-05-28T13:07:56Z BUNIA, Congo (AP) — Aid workers rushed supplies Thursday to the center of Congo’s outbreak of a rare type of Ebola virus while beleaguered medical personnel struggled with a lack of equipment, a distrustful population and armed groups in a volatile region. A white cargo plane with aid donated by the European Union delivered masks, gloves, boots and medications — all of which are in short supply — to the northeastern town of Bunia at the heart of the outbreak in Congo’s Ituri province. U.N.-branded forklifts lifted several cases into trucks.Health workers with scant supplies have been struggling to contain an outbreak of the Bundibugyo virus, a kind of Ebola that has no approved treatment or vaccine. In some areas, doctors have resorted to wearing expired medical masks while treating suspected patients. Dangers faced by health workers have been heightened by anger among residents over the stringent medical protocols for dealing with the bodies of victims, which clash with local burial rites. Residents have launched at least three attacks against health centers in Ituri province. Congolese Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said that during outbreaks people in remote communities can feel overwhelmed by an incoming flood of information and people. “We’ve seen in every epidemic that there’s always resistance,” Kamba said. “Communities always ask themselves, ‘What’s going on?’ And in epidemics like this one, it is really risk communication and community engagement that ultimately change perceptions.” Read More Aid donated by the EU is expected to arrive in batches over the next eight days, Jérôme Kouachi, head of emergency operations at UNICEF in Congo, told The Associated Press. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was on his way to Congo to see the efforts first-hand efforts. The WHO has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, in the hope of ramping up aid. The United States on Thursday said it is increasing its aid to Congo and Uganda by $80 million, bringing its commitment to more than $112 million since the outbreak. The additional money would pay for personal protective equipment for health care workers, Ebola test kits, support for health screening at airports and contact tracing, the U.S. State Department said.Africa Centres for Disease Control director-general Dr Jean Kaseya said that the organization on Monday believed it had secured funding pledges of nearly $500 million toward Africa’s emergency response, but that as of Thursday afternoon the amount had dwindled to $290 million as partners withdrew or reduced pledges. He also said that the Africa CDC hoped to have treatments and a vaccine for the Bundibugyo virus by the end of the year, and that there were some vaccine candidates already in the works. The Congolese government has confirmed more than 1,000 suspected cases, with at least 220 deaths, since it declared an outbreak on May 15. But the virus had been spreading undetected for weeks, and the WHO suspects it is much larger than what has been reported. The virus has also reached neighboring Uganda, which has confirmed seven cases and one death. On Wednesday, the Congolese government said the first survivor to recover from the virus had left a health center.“We are trying to catch up,” Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner said earlier this week. “It is a race against the clock.”The response on the ground has been hampered by multiple challenges, including customs’ red tape, insufficient storage facilities, bad roads and weak telecommunications, humanitarian agencies said in a report on Thursday.Tedros on Wednesday called for a ceasefire in a region where armed groups have staged violent attacks for decades. “We cannot build community trust or isolate the sick while bombs are falling,” he said.Tucked in the northeastern part of Congo close to the Ugandan border, Ituri province has been reeling from attacks by the Allied Democratic Force, a rebel group allied with the Islamic State group, and a coalition of ethnic militias. In early May, the ADF killed at least 40 people and burned several homes in Ituri. The illness has also been reported in two Congolese provinces south of Ituri — North Kivu and South Kivu, where the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group controls many key cities, including Goma and Bukavu. The rebels have reported two cases. The region’s main airport in Goma, which doubles as a staging ground for humanitarian efforts into the region, has been closed since January 2025, when M23 seized the city. The conflict has precipitated one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with at least 7 million people displaced in eastern Congo.—-Ope Adetayo reported from Lagos, Nigeria. APNEWS.COMExperimental hepatitis B drug may offer ‘functional cure’ for some patientsThis 1981 electron microscope image made available by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows hepatitis B virus particles, indicated in orange. (Dr. Erskine Palmer/CDC via AP, File)2026-05-28T08:30:15Z WASHINGTON (AP) — A first-of-its-kind drug for hepatitis B is letting some patients stop treatment without showing signs of the dangerous liver virus, what’s called a “functional cure,” researchers reported Thursday. In two international studies, about 1 in 5 patients given the experimental drug saw their virus reduced to levels low enough for the immune system to keep in check.“We have not had a treatment which has come to this level of cure,” Dr. Seng Gee Lim of the National University Health System of Singapore, who helped lead the GSK-funded studies, told reporters before presenting the findings at a scientific meeting in Barcelona, Spain. The data also was published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.Chronic hepatitis B can cause liver cancer or liver failure, and kills about 1.1 million people around the world each year. Improvements to today’s lifelong therapy, which can be hard to stick with or to access in some countries, have been sought for decades. The new findings “represent a major step,” Dr. Anna Lok, a hepatitis expert at the University of Michigan who wasn’t involved in the research, wrote in the journal. But she cautioned that more study is needed to see how long that remission-like state lasts. The drug is bepirovirsen, nicknamed “bepi” and developed by GSK and Ionis Pharmaceuticals. It is under fast-track review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, with a decision expected in October. Regulators in Japan, China and Europe also are considering the drug. Read More Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection spread through contact with blood or other bodily fluids, including childbirth. A highly effective vaccine can prevent it. For people who are infected, many have an “acute” illness that lasts several months. But for some — about 1.7 million people in the U.S. and more than 250 million worldwide — it becomes a chronic form that gradually damages the liver. Standard treatments, including daily pills, reduce levels of the virus and prevent liver damage. But a true cure is elusive because hepatitis B has an unusual ability to hide in the body, ready to rebound if therapy stops. The new drug attacks hepatitis B by binding to its genetic components, suppressing viral replication as well as a key protein, the “S” or surface protein, and stimulates the immune system, said GSK vice president Melanie Paff. The trials included 1,838 patients assigned to get either a bepi shot or a dummy shot weekly for six months, in addition to their regular pills. If the virus was undetectable for six months after stopping the shots, they could stop their regular pills, too. In about 20% of the bepi recipients, the virus remained undetectable for six more months after they stopped all treatment — that “functional cure” — something no patients given the dummy shots achieved, the researchers reported.Bepi recipients who started the study with lower levels of that S protein were slightly more likely to achieve a functional cure, Lim said. He is doing additional research to try to determine why only some people respond. As for how long the functional cure lasts, GSK has tracked a small number of patients from earlier-stage studies and found most still faring well up to three years later, Paff said.Lim said side effects included mild injection-site redness or pain and a temporary rise in enzymes that can indicate liver stress.Lok, the Michigan hepatitis expert, noted the trials didn’t include patients with cirrhosis, high S protein levels or other complicating factors.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOpinion: How conflict and contradiction have cost the Colorado AvalancheWe are now a few days removed from the Colorado Avalanche being eliminated via sweep from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After reading through a catalog of blame game articles and social posts, I’ve decided to make an entry of a different sort. I’m not here to blame any one individual for what happened during Colorado’s cataclysmic meltdown that saw a team that was 8-1 through two rounds of playoff hockey waste 8 days and leave the bracket with an 8-5 record. I’m more curious about how it happened and why."Joy and devastation, all in two pictures."The Avalanche have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. pic.twitter.com/QTtPTgqlyi— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) May 27, 2026The Avalanche and their fans got handshakes and heartbreak rather than the glitz and glory of another cup run, but what led to this collapse?Cognitive DissonanceIf you ask me, it boils down to saying what you do, and doing what you say, and how the Avalanche as a whole has failed to live up to their systems-first messaging. We are beaten over the head with “next man up” and “Buy into the system and the system will take care of itself”, but have seen management leverage young talent for “the perfect fit,” the coaching staff lean on and deploy top groups more than ever and when not even fully healthy, and top players refuse to embody the message in the most crucial moments.Logan O’Connor:“We let down coaches, each other, fans, management. It’s on us as players to be far better than we were.. lot of disappointment right now” pic.twitter.com/vaEJADEsrN— Romi Bean (@Romi_Bean) May 27, 2026Now consider that the bottom of the Avalanche forward group, which embodied the system and approach, was clearly the most effective group, yet still sat and watched an uncomfortable, hobbled Nate MacKinnon and Cale Makar attempt to wince their way to a comeback in the closing seconds of games three and four.I’ll be super clear on one thing. I’m not suggesting you bench either Nathan MacKinnon or Cale Makar, but rather that you reward the guys who are buying in and give yourself the best shot of winning by doing so.Problems Perculate on the Power PlayYou know where I see contradiction most obviously? How Colorado approaches the power play.Anyone who has followed the Avalanche season from start to finish knows that the power play was a hot-button topic all season after the Avalanche and their failure to execute on the man advantage last postseason dominated offseason narratives. The power play struggled again during the majority of the regular season and in the postseason.Adjustments were made to try to enable the highly talented top group, but in general, the Avalanche’s power play, with world-class talent, was nowhere near as effective as it should have been.None of those adjustments panned out, yet it was still the first unit that consistently held the majority of the advantage. The second power play group that has a few players you just had to trade for hardly ever saw a look at more than 30 seconds of a power play. Most of the time, it takes 5-10 seconds just to enter and cycle. So basically, the second group constantly got one crack at making a difference, even when the top group clearly wasn’t.Working Up the LeaderboardNow that I’ve laid it out, I want to talk a bit about the power dynamic in Colorado, as I see leadership from players all the way up to management having a hand in the separation between philosophy and practice.Let’s start with Captain Gabe Landeskog, who definitely bought into the system and was among Colorado’s most effective postseason players for two consecutive seasons now. Gabe no doubt has a unique perspective given his storied return to hockey, and was obviously in various shades of disappointment/frustration throughout the Vegas series. When Jared Bednar was first brought on, here’s what Landeskog had to say about Bednar’s approach: “He wants to play fast. He wants to play quick and play in the O-zone and get on the forecheck. With our speed up front, I think it will benefit us. Spending less time in the D-zone will be something we’ll all be looking to do. The systems are going to work to our advantage.”Based on Landeskog’s performance, he clearly appreciates Bednar’s strategy, and on paper, all of what he saw does fit this Avalanche squad. But what happens when your top guys try to red-cape it when the going gets tough?Gabe is doing plenty, as far as I’m concerned, by leading by example and by saying what needs to be said. With that, I turn to the head coach and how he could empower Landeskog and get the top guys to hold the big picture dear, no matter how competitive and capable they are, or how much adversity they face. Playoff hockey is like playing a game of stygian chicken, and Vegas never, not once, thought about changing course. They were going to go for a head-on collision or force the Avs to veer out of desperation. The Avalanche did veer off course, playing like an insecure club without any answers for what was being thrown at them.Vegas clogged the middle of the ice, stayed home, capitalized on Colorado’s mistakes, and said, “We can do this all night.”Colorado responded by being perfectly content with the fool’s gold of perimeter looks, time and time again. The message was “we gotta keep playing our game,” but in my opinion, they stopped playing Avalanche hockey in game two of the Western Conference Final. Does the undeniable shelf life of Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar as Avalanche mainstays require that Jared Bednar cater to them to a fault for survival? Would he be let go quickly if he stood his ground or made more public statements about the specifics of his displeasure?Did we see a passive-aggressive version of that with the “It’s up to Cale” phiasco? It’s impossible to say for sure, as vagueness is among the most-used tools in Bednar’s press bag.If Bednar isn’t comfortable sticking to his guns to foster a pleased elite core, that presents a real problem. The Great DivideYou don’t need to be a part of an NHL hockey team to know what a lack of accountability or consistency can do to a team. In business, if one employee sees another employee afforded benefits despite poor performance, it can be demoralizing. Moreover, if the message is “do your job,” but some are enabled not to do so, the whole group begins to lose respect for the process and leadership. No one goes above and beyond for a boss who seems to do things that contradict his message. The lack of accountability may lead to some division in the room, though I have no insight into that. On the surface, everything seems peachy (outside of disappointment), but that’s rarely the case when a team implodes like this. I could apply this thinking to Jared Bednar as it pertains to his stars, but I really don’t think he, at his core, believes in catering to superstars over the team. If his actions contradict that, I have to look further up the leadership ladder to find a reason why, and I think I have one.Starts at the TopWe can’t say Chris MacFarland caters to superstars if he traded one, right?Well, from my vantage, MacFarland has officially leveraged every shred of futures for the Avalanche in hopes of getting at least one more cup from the current core, and it’s all been for not. After dealing more picks for specific roles, the Avalanche are both without hardware or a clear path into the future. If your coach says it doesn’t matter who plays and that it’s about the system, wouldn’t it be better to develop more young guns and play the long game?We have examples of exactly that already working in Colorado.Logan O’Connor, Sam Malinski, and others have survived being traded long enough to develop into effective NHL players, with LOC being a huge part of the team’s identity. Or at least that’s what we are told. This whole article is riddled with hindsight and recency biases, but let’s take a look at some of the deals I view as challenging the idea that anyone can fill the roles in this system.MacFarland leveraged Alex Newhook for Mikael Gulyayev, Ross Colton, and Gianni Fairbrother back in 2023, as Newhook was asked to fill in at 2C along with J.T. Compher when Kadri couldn’t be retained after a cup win.Alex NewhookFirst player in Canadiens history to score a Game 7 Overtime goal on the road#GoHabsGopic.twitter.com/qZ8VfIMyZp— Sportsnet Stats (@SNstats) May 19, 2026Because he was unable to do so immediately and the pressure of a win-now window, Colorado elected to swap Newhook’s budding talent for a bona fide Stanley Cup Champion talent in Ross Colton. Rosco was good, but he was also scratched to start the playoffs, and Newhook has 10 points and has been Montreal’s clutchest player of the postseason in the here and now. That youthful scoring touch and gamer mentality would have been nice this year, and, to be fair, Newhook showed he had it in 2022; otherwise, we wouldn’t have thought he could be a 2C for a competitor for 3 months.Management also infamously swapped Bowen Byram in a one-for-one for Casey Mittlestadt, who lands pretty high on the list of biggest trade flops ever. He now plays for the Bruins, as he was traded for Charlie Coyle ahead of last year’s playoff disappointment.Charlie Coyle was subsequently traded with a throw-in of Miles Wood for Gavin Brindley (nice) and a couple of picks. So, inevitably, Bowen Byram is traded for a young player with potential, but one that’s likely 2 to 3 years away (at the time of the trade) from being an NHL mainstay. What was Bo up to this year? Oh, just playing a pivotal role in getting the Buffalo Sabres back to the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, and posting 7 points in 13 playoff games.Bowen Byram has his fourth of the playoffs as the Sabres' power play stays hot in Game 1 💪 pic.twitter.com/PeANMyx6RK— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) May 7, 2026I reiterate that I know I have the benefit of hindsight here. Still, the justification for leveraging Colorado’s fleeting surplus of back-end talent and young, not-quite-there forwards is that winning now matters. The Avalanche haven’t won anything beyond the regular season during this window. That’s a fact. The Way ForwardThis article sucks. It’s just me saying the easiest thing you can easily say about a team that didn’t live up to the hype, but it’s the hype I blame. My colleague Ezra Parter at the Mile High Hockey Lab coined our catchphrase: “Hockey is random and difficult,” and I think it’s a bit of wisdom that the Avalanche should take into the thought process from top to bottom. We officially know you can build a stacked roster, but you have enough small vulnerabilities that allow a team to dismantle the NHL’s scoringest regular-season team. Bednar himself said it takes some luck, but what it really takes is resolve and patience. Luck makes its appearance inside that mindset more often than not, but remember, luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I see a way forward for this Avalanche team, but it’s going to hurt. Believe it or not, this loss may be just what the now-mature core needs to recommit to the process. The Avalanche organization can’t buy the hype and has to get back to its philosophical foundations. They aren’t a team looking to change the culture and become competitive, as they were back in 2022. Now they are a high-flying, heavily decorated group of individuals set on living up to expectations.I say get back to the mindset of never being bigger than the game, or the process, or your team. You win as a team, and you lose as a team. When you leave the team behind, losing happens much more often and quickly.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA's board of governors passes anti-tanking changes to draft lottery process, AP source saysThe NBA approved sweeping changes to the draft lottery on Thursday that will strip the teams with the worst records from receiving the best odds of winning the No. 1 pick, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the league had not revealed the vote result publicly. The changes were made in large part to crack down on tanking. A vote by the league's Board of Governors made the plan official for the next three seasons. The “3-2-1 Lottery” proposal expands the event to 16 teams, flattens odds of winning the No. 1 pick and will try to deter teams from tanking by lowering lottery chances for teams that have the worst records.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/nba0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

A group headlined by first-round linebacker Sonny Styles and third-round receiver Antonio Williams have been in meetings and on-field work, mostly conducted against air. Activity ramped up on Wednesday during the first of nine OTAs that lead into a mid-June mandatory minicamp. There are still no pads or violent contact allowed, so we’re still a ways from the real football heading towards us in training camp and the preseason. That’s why Dan Quinn and his staff are focused on the little details that show progress, skill and schematic understanding. Washington’s head coach detailed what he’s looking for in Styles and Williams in this early going. Let’s start with Styles, an Ohio State product taken at No. 7 overall. He can’t hit or make plays on the ball, but Quinn flagged areas where Styles can showcase himself this spring. “As Sonny goes, it’s different,” Quinn said in a Wednesday press conference. “You’re not going to see his plays on the ball, but can we see the burst, the movement and as a linebacker — man, do we want to feel his communication.” There are moments, like this clip below, where you can his natural movements and athleticism. Sonny Styles working on his pass rush pic.twitter.com/Mj52FjXrCS— Scott Abraham (@Scott7news) May 27, 2026There are clearer signs for Williams, just by the nature of his position. “This time of year, what are you competing and what does that look like?” Quinn said. “And so, in Antonio’s spot, it’s the route, it’s the movements, it’s the catching when he is targeted, he’ll work with a number of different groups as we go through the process.” Antonio Williams going through individual drills pic.twitter.com/1RvD7G0PKq— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) May 27, 2026I thought Antonio Williams had a really nice day today. He looked comfortable in the offense and seemed to have a good sense of finding soft spots in the defense and sitting down giving the QB's a nice target to throw to pic.twitter.com/3PKLo350DF— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) May 28, 2026Williams has made a solid first impression on the man throwing him passes and deciding receivers to target, a positive sign for the Clemson product. “He’s a smooth kid and very crafty within his routes,” quarterback Jayden Daniels said in a Wednesday presser. “I’m excited to continue to build that rapport with him.”0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe march to MLB’s lockout beginsNEW YORK, UNITED STATES - 2023/07/26: Deputy Executive Director at Major League Baseball Players Association Bruce Meyer speaks as striking members of Writers Guild of America picketing in front of CBS Broadcast Center on theme Sport Writers Picket. Executives from NHL Players Association, NFL Players Association, MLB Players Association joined and spoke during picket. (Photo by Lev Radin/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images) | (Photo by Lev Radin/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images) The labor negotiations between MLB and the MLBPA began on May 12, with each side making opening presentations. On May 27, the MLBPA released the first substantive policy proposals for the upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).As expected, the MLBPA seeks to modify the current CBA system rather than pursue a dramatic overhaul. The major policy proposals include, per Jeff Passan:A “competitive-integrity tax” for any team that does not spend $150MAn increase in the minimum salary from $780,000 to $1.5MAn increase in the base Competitive Balance Tax threshold from $244M to $300MChanges to the revenue-sharing system that would distribute more money from local television revenue, but decrease the amount distributed from in-stadium revenue, to incentivize teams that win and draw larger crowdsFree agency for players who are 30 at 5+ years of serviceTeams that receive revenue sharing forfeit portions of their checks depending on payroll levels. Recipients who win receive more moneyPre-arbibration bonus pool increases from $50M to $180M$3M minimum tender in arbitrationArbitration super 2s jump from 22% of players to 44%Evan Drellich of The Athleticalso listed some additional union proposals that Jeff Passan did not mention on Twitter:The minimum salary would later climb to $1.65 million in 2028, $1.825 million in 2029, $2 million in 2030, and $2.2 million in 2031.The first tier of the luxury tax would be set at $315 million in 2028, $330 million in 2029, $345 million in 2030, and $360 million in 2031.The pre-arbitration bonus pool was a flat $50 million throughout the 2022-26 collective bargaining agreement. In addition to the initial $130 million increase, the union wants it to rise by $15 million each season. There was no proposal to create an international draft, though players and owners made some conceptual progress in the last round of talks.Under the MLBPA’s proposal, based on current payrolls, only the Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers would be above the CBT threshold, compared to the six teams currently over the $244 million threshold. Moreover, 13 teams would be subject to the Competitive Integrity Tax for having payrolls under $150 million.Bob Nightengale reported on the league’s response to the union’s opening gambit on Twitter:“We appreciate the union making a set of proposals and we look forward to continuing the bargaining process and working towards solving the competitive balance problem our fans are telling us needs to be addressed. We understand their proposals are designed to benefit players. Unfortunately, they do not address and in fact exacerbate the competitive balance problem our fans are telling us we must address. The MLBPA’s proposal would reduce the amount transferred to lower-revenue Clubs, weaken the Competitive Balance Tax, and lead to even more payroll disparity than exists today. For example, under the Union’s proposal, the Dodgers would pay less in luxury tax payments, giving them an additional $70 million to spend on payroll.”(Emphasis added.)As expected, the league will continue to use the Dodgers as a shiny object to push for a hard salary cap. Never mind that four of the six current division leaders (Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians, and Seattle Mariners) are revenue-sharing recipients. Never mind that, per Fangraphs, the teams with the second- (New York Mets), fourth- (Toronto Blue Jays), seventh- (Houston Astros), tenth- (Detroit Tigers), eleventh- (San Francisco Giants), twelfth-(Boston Red Sox), and fifteenth-highest (Anaheim Angels) payrolls are either below .500 and/or essentially running out the clock until it’s time to go to Cancun. Why acknowledge both the record sale of the San Diego Padres and the ongoing clown show in Queens instantly counter the league’s arguments for a hard cap? Echoes of 1994Regardless, the league was expected to announce its opening gambit in negotiations the following day, much faster than in the last CBA negotiations, when the league waited until August to make its initial proposal. On May 28, the league obliged, proposing a hard salary cap for the first time since the infamous 1994-95 strike, leading to the first canceled World Series in 90 years.Per Ronald Blum of The Associated Press:[MLB’s] proposal would cap spending in 2027 at $245.3 million, with a salary floor of $171.2 million.“Our salary cap and floor proposal levels the playing field while sharing baseball revenue with the players 50/50 as we grow the game together,” MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said in a statement. “Further, by sharing media revenue equally as part of our proposal, we can address another top fan concern of local TV blackouts.”Management gave the union its latest plan during a bargaining session at the commissioner’s office, one day after the union made its economic proposal. Owners say a cap is needed to improve competitive balance and restrain the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and other wealthy teams from assembling starrier rosters than their smaller-market brethren.(Emphasis added.)Under MLB’s proposal, using current payrolls, only nine teams would be in compliance using the proposed hard cap and floor: Houston Astros ($237 million), Chicago Cubs ($232 million), San Diego Padres ($209 million), Detroit Tigers ($207 million), San Francisco Giants ($201 million), Boston Red Sox ($196 million), Arizona Diamondbacks ($195 million), Texas Rangers ($187 million), and Anaheim Angels ($184 million). Six teams would be above the hard cap, and 13 teams would be below the floor. Also, per the AP, MLB’s last salary cap proposal in 1994 offered players a 50-50 split of revenue in a system that would have forced teams to maintain payrolls of 84-110% of the average. Salary arbitration would have been eliminated, and the threshold for free agency would have been lowered from six years’ major league service to four, with the provision that a player’s former club could match any offer until he had six years.MLB’s offer came on June 14, 1994; players struck on August 12, 1994, and on September 14, 1994, the ‘94 World Series was canceled. Ultimately, MLB withdrew the cap proposal on February 6, 1995, after pressure from the National Labor Relations Board. The strike ended on March 31, 1995, after then-U.S. District Judge Sonia Sotomayor (yes, that Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor) issued an injunction restoring the work rules of the expired labor contract. Two days later, the owners accepted the union’s offer to return to work without an agreement, and a deal wasn’t reached until 1997, causing reputational damage to the sport that arguably lasted until the steroid boom, punctuated by Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa’s 1998 duel to break Roger Maris’ then-record of 61 home runs in a single season.“Welcome to the party, pal!”Mr. Drellich also posted an article in The Athletic on May 27 that made many of the same surface-level observations about private equity in baseball that our own “The Vulture of Private Equity” made and more, six weeks earlier. Ken Rosenthal made similar points, referencing Mr. Drellich’s work on Foul Territory.Using competitive balance as an argument for a salary cap seems flawed, says @Ken_Rosenthal."The reason owners want a cap is clearly to enhance their franchise values." pic.twitter.com/21piCMXmpe— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) May 27, 2026Rather than repeat previously published work, which can speak for itself, for the convenience of either reporter or reader, all five revival “It’s Not My Money(ball)” articles are collated below. This collective body of work, all 13,764 words of it, covers an assortment of relevant topics likely to arise during the new CBA negotiations, in one form or another. This process will undoubtedly be a slow one over the next six months, largely occurring in the background. In conclusion to this brief update, it is worth repeating that there is no reason for a lockout to occur. But as with most things, some lessons need to be relearned, even when there is no value to the lesson. As shown during the aftermath of the 1994-95 strike, the parties could choose to keep the current system in place while a new CBA is negotiated and ratified — if the goal was stability. If the goal was disruption and chaos disguised to grow balance sheets that the public will never see, then locking out the players at the earliest opportunity would seem to be the only move in the league’s pocket, apart from turning the public against the players. The quickest way to do that gargantuan task is to keep using the Dodgers as a foil to why your team is doomed to be bad; never mind the moronic decisions arising from front offices ranging from San Francisco to Queens and points in between.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMF1 Groundhog Crash Sparks PETA Pressure on Canadian GP as Alex Albon’s Weekend Falls ApartF1 Groundhog Crash Sparks PETA Pressure on Canadian GP as Alex Albon’s Weekend Falls ApartFormula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix is facing renewed pressure over wildlife safety after Alex Albon’s violent collision with a groundhog wrecked his Friday session and triggered criticism from PETA over the circuit’s handling of local animals.More Stories Like ThisInside South Carolina’s $100 Million Driver Data Machine and Why Drivers Should Be Paying AttentionMcLaren Built A Le Mans Hypercar Too Extreme For Racing Rules And VIP Buyers Are Getting The Real MonsterMotorcycle Left Hanging From Traffic Light After Violent Crash In CanadaThe incident happened during the only practice session of the sprint weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Albon struck a marmot at Turn 7, causing major damage to his Williams and ending his track time early. The impact was severe enough that he could not participate in sprint qualifying afterward. For Albon, it instantly turned a promising weekend into damage control. For Formula 1 and Canadian Grand Prix organizers, it reopened an issue the sport has never fully solved at one of its most famous venues. And that’s where things get uncomfortable. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is built on Île Notre Dame, an area known for its groundhog population. The small animals have become an unfortunate recurring part of race weekends in Montreal over the years, with multiple incidents involving cars and wildlife occurring at the circuit.Organizers have attempted to keep the animals away from the racing surface, but the problem clearly has not disappeared. PETA made that point immediately after Friday’s crash, calling for stronger deterrent measures to protect both wildlife and drivers. The animal rights organization praised Albon for trying to avoid the groundhog before the impact happened. At the same time, it pushed for more aggressive action from race officials to prevent future incidents at the track. Here’s the part that matters for Formula 1.This was not just a minor inconvenience during practice. The collision effectively wrecked half of Albon’s Friday and left him entering the rest of the weekend already behind. Sprint weekends are brutal on teams because there is almost no practice time available. Drivers get one hour to dial in the car before competitive sessions begin. Lose that time and the entire weekend can unravel quickly. That’s exactly what happened to Williams.Team principal James Vowles admitted Albon was frustrated because the pace in the car looked competitive before the crash. He also revealed the driver was upset about hitting the animal itself after returning to the garage. The damage on track turned into poor grid position later. Albon eventually qualified 18th for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix, three spots behind teammate Carlos Sainz. That detail matters because every lost lap in modern Formula 1 carries consequences. Teams operate under tight restrictions, limited sessions, and constant pressure to maximize performance instantly. When a random wildlife strike destroys a car during the only practice session available, it creates a situation that teams simply cannot recover from easily. And this is where the story gets bigger than one Williams crash.Formula 1 constantly markets itself as the pinnacle of motorsport technology and operational precision. The sport spends massive amounts of money on safety systems, circuit design, barriers, runoff areas, and risk management. Yet every few years, Montreal ends up back in the headlines because groundhogs continue finding their way onto the racing surface. That contradiction is hard to ignore.Drivers are expected to operate at extreme speeds with near-perfect reactions, but wildlife remains an unpredictable hazard sitting completely outside their control. In Albon’s case, the situation became even worse because he reportedly attempted to avoid the animal before impact. That split-second decision likely complicated an already dangerous situation at high speed.PETA’s involvement also guarantees this story will travel beyond normal motorsport coverage. Animal safety debates create attention quickly, especially when dramatic footage or heavily damaged race cars are involved. Formula 1 now finds itself balancing two difficult realities at once. Protecting wildlife matters. So does protecting drivers and maintaining fair competition during a race weekend. The Canadian Grand Prix has long embraced the uniqueness of its location, but that same environment continues creating headaches the sport has not eliminated. And that’s where things change. You Should Read This Next140 MPH Chevy Malibu Police Chase Ends In Violent Rollover After Driver Tries To Outrun Arkansas TrooperMercedes-Maybach Refuses to Kill the V12 as America Becomes the Last Safe Haven for 12-Cylinder LuxuryFerrari 488 Pista Destroyed in Moscow Crash as Rapper Navai’s Speed Claim Faces ScrutinyAbandoned 455 Pontiac Trans Am Found Rotting in Junkyard as Muscle Car Fans Debate Whether It’s Worth SavingWhen incidents like this happen repeatedly at the same circuit, the conversation eventually shifts away from bad luck and toward accountability. Organizers have already acknowledged efforts to deter the groundhogs around the track, but recurring incidents make it harder to argue the problem is fully under control. From a competitive standpoint, the crash also hurt a Williams team fighting for every opportunity this season. Losing valuable track time during a sprint weekend is damaging enough on its own. Having it happen because of wildlife creates frustration that teams can do almost nothing about once the session begins.Fans understand mechanical failures. They understand strategy mistakes. A car getting destroyed by a groundhog during Formula 1 practice feels different. It feels avoidable, even if solving the problem is more complicated than simply putting up fences around the circuit. This is where the motorsport politics start creeping in quietly.Formula 1 promotes itself globally as a highly regulated, tightly managed sport where every detail is controlled down to millimeters and milliseconds. But when animals continue reaching the track surface during race weekends, it undercuts part of that image. It creates questions about whether enough resources are actually being devoted to solving the issue permanently. At the same time, there is also the reality that Circuit Gilles Villeneuve remains one of Formula 1’s most recognizable venues. The Canadian Grand Prix is deeply established on the calendar and widely popular with fans. Nobody is suggesting the race should disappear because of wildlife concerns. Still, pressure increases each time another incident happens. For Albon, the damage was immediate and visible. His Friday session ended in pieces, his sprint qualifying disappeared, and his Grand Prix starting position suffered. For Formula 1, the consequences may linger longer than one weekend result.Because eventually the sport has to answer a difficult question. If Formula 1 can engineer cars capable of surviving enormous crashes at over 200 mph, why does it still keep finding itself beaten by groundhogs in Montreal?Continue Reading: VW Tiguan Burn Lawsuit Heads to Trial After Driver Claims Heated Seat Left Her With Second-Degree Burns0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOthello tennis finishes out season in stateMay 28—SEATTLE — The Othello Huskies sent three girls to the 2A State Tennis tournament at Nordstrom Tennis Center over the weekend with senior Olivia Harris competing in singles and seniors Shaylee Freeman and Faith Risenmay competing in doubles. All three Huskies had successful seasons and were happy with the opportunity to compete at state."I think we've all worked very hard for four years, so it was fun to be able to all go together because we're all best friends, and to be able to play at state," said Risenmay. "We all did really well."Harris started out the competition Friday against Jenny Serebriakova from the Columbia River Rapids. The matchup proved to be tough as Serebriakova earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory and Harris was sent into the consolation bracket. The next match of the day put Harris against Lucy Cao from the Bremerton Knights. The two girls battled hard as Cao won the first set 6-2, but Harris tied the match up with a 6-1 win in the second set."I felt really good about that match because I fell like that was the smartest and most intentional I played," said Harris. "I thought about what I was doing and I tried to play really smart."Unfortunately, Harris fell in a third set tiebreaker 0-6 and concluded her run in the state tournament."It was a really cool experience just because the competition was actually insane," said Harris. "Getting into the state tournament was a long-time goal of hers, she said, and the amount of skill it took for her to reach this point is something the senior is very proud of."Just having that goal in the back of my mind and actually being able to achieve it was really awesome," said Harris. In doubles, Freeman and Risenmay started off Friday against a tough duo from North Kitsap. The North Kitsap girls won the first set 6-2, but the Huskies rallied to win the second set 6-4 to put the match into a third set that Othello won 6-4 to advance to the next round."It was a really long match, but we fought really hard," said Risenmay. The quarterfinal round put the Huskies against Tumwater's duo that proved to be an even matchup. The first set went into a tiebreaker that the Othello duo won 7-5, and Tumwater evened the match up in the second set where the Huskies fell 4-6.The final set of the day remained close as the two teams battled it out, but Risenmay and Freeman gained the advantage to win 6-4 and qualify for the second day of competition."We were exhausted, but we were able to pull through and win," said Risenmay. "That was really exciting because when you win two matches it means you're guaranteed to place."Saturday's competition proved to be even more fierce as Freeman and Risenmay went into the semifinals against Sehome and fell 6-2, 6-1 and moved on to the third/sixth place matchup. The Huskies ran into trouble in their final match of the season where they fell 6-0, 6-0 and placed sixth in the state."I don't know what it was if we were just tired from fighting so hard the first day, but we just didn't pull through the second day," said Freeman. "But we ended up placing sixth so that's exciting."Freeman said it was a great experience for her, after playing three sports throughout her whole high school career, to have the opportunity to compete in the state tournament to end her senior year."Getting to go to state in my last season ever was really exciting for me," she said. "I kind of feel like all my hard work finally paid off."As the seniors look back on their careers with the sport, they said the friendships and experiences built over the years are something they will always cherish. Over the years, each of the girls said they built bonds with people both on and off the court."You have so many people that are watching you and supporting you, and our bus driver, Jeff, was like my favorite person," said Harris. "He would watch all of my matches that he could, so that was just amazing."The Huskies also had silly moments over the years that they will always appreciate."Our sophomore year I completely missed a ball, and it hit me in the head," said Risenmay. "Just little things like that I can look back and laugh upon instead of feeling sad."Huskies' Girls Coach Priscilla Tovar said she enjoyed her time coaching each of these girls from the time they were freshmen and seeing their growth over the years was especially exciting. Each of the seniors showed hard work and dedication throughout their careers that impressed all of the coaching staff."It's not me, these girls put in the work," said Tovar. "These girls just took in everything, and they fought hard and are so well deserved of going to state. I'm just proud of each and every one of them."The coach said she was incredibly proud of the integrity that the seniors showed on the court in every match and how they showed respect to everyone during competitions."I got complimented all the time from other coaches, so (I'm) just proud of them and I hope that my younger girls continue that," said Tovar. Each of the girls plan on keeping tennis part of their lives after graduating and will continue practicing with friends and family who also enjoy the sport."That's one of my favorite things about tennis is that you can play it for the rest of your life with whoever," said Freeman. "I'm going to college with my siblings and they've all played tennis so I'm going to get to play tennis with them."The legacy that the seniors said they want to leave behind for the Othello tennis program is one of hard work and determination, but also that of kindness."You can be a kind tennis player and still win," said Risenmay. "People are mean, but you can still be kind and make good calls and still win. Just have good sportsmanship."0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Boston Bruins enforcer, longtime radio host Lyndon Byers diagnosed with CTE after deathFormer Boston Bruins enforcer and longtime co-host of “The Hill-Man Morning Show” on WAAF, Lyndon Byers, suffered from CTE, the family of the longtime fan favorite revealed Thursday. Byers’ family donated his brain to the UNITE Brain Bank at the Boston University CTE Center after his death last year. Dr. Ann McKee, director of the Boston University CTE Center and chief of neuropathology for the VA Boston Healthcare System, said that Byers suffered from stage 3 (of 4) CTE. ““With stage 3 disease like Lyndon Byers had, individuals almost always report cognitive symptoms, and 50% develop dementia,” said Dr. McKee, said. “We thank the Byers family for this contribution to research, which brings us closer to our goal of diagnosing CTE during life and develop effective treatments for those still living.”Anne Byers, Lyndon’s wife, said her husband’s personality changed toward the end of his life. “He was so fun and vibrant but towards the end it got to the point where didn’t want to socialize or even leave the house,” she said. “He battled severe depression, had episodes of hallucinations, and his struggles with short-term memory loss made it difficult for him to navigate the day on his own. I will do whatever I can to make sure nobody else has to watch their loved one deteriorate like that.”Byers’ family said they made the decision to donate his brain to raise awareness of CTE in the sport and to hopefully help more families. “The NHL can do better to protect its players’ safety,” said Anne Byers. “Athletes deserve to know what head injuries can do so they can make informed decisions about their bodies and work in an environment that supports their health first.”Byers played in Boston from 1983 to 1992, scoring 24 goals, tallying 42 assists, and racking up 959 penalty minutes, a testament to his toughness on the ice.Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.Follow Boston 25 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch Boston 25 News NOW0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

The question isn't whether they will buy or sell, but how big they will buy?Jim Bowden of The Athletic shared a prediction for the Rays at the trade deadline, saying that they will be a "threat" in the sweepstakes for Detroit Tigers $32 million Cy Young-winning ace, Tarik Skubal.Rays predicted to be 'threat' in Tarik Skubal sweepstakes"The Rays will be 'in' on Skubal, and they'll do it in stealth fashion as they normally do," Bowden writes. "They have the farm system to make a deal work here, and if they can put Skubal with Drew Rasmussen and Shane McClanahan at the top of the rotation, they'll be well equipped to do damage in October. They'll be a threat in the Skubal sweepstakes."While there will be plenty of attention on teams like the Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs for Skubal, the Rays can't be counted out just yet. They have a good team, and if they believe there's a chance to win it all this year, trading for Skubal would make a lot of sense.MORE: Yankees’ Aaron Judge on track to become first player in MLB history with five 50+ homer seasonsDrew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan, and Nick Martinez have been great for the Rays this season, but there is still room for one more pitcher in this rotation. While they could shop in the lower-tier of the trade market and come away happy, if they could add Skubal, the two-time Cy Young winner who has a 2.70 ERA this season, it would be a very fun rotation that could go head-to-head with any team in baseball. It won't be cheap, even though Skubal is currently on the injured list after surgery. But, he will be back, and once he returns and very likely performs well, it's going to be very expensive to trade for the Cy Young ace. This prediction from Bowden, that the Rays will be a "threat" for Skubal in the trade market, is a very exciting one. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMatthias Jaissle is Ralf Rangnick’s pick for Milan bench, Pochettino remains a possibilityMatthias Jaissle is Ralf Rangnick’s pick for Milan bench, Pochettino remains a possibilityAs reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Matthias Jaissle is Ralf Rangnick’s first pick for the head coach role at Milan.Years after his last-minute collapsed move to San Siro, the Austrian is being courted by RedBird to oversee the total overhaul imminent at the club, a role not too dissimilar from the one he was offered at Man United before walking out of Old Trafford after his ill-fated tenure as interim coach.True to form, Rangnick wants total authority when it comes to shaping the club’s sporting future, something he has been notably successful with when it comes to the Hoffenheim and Red Bull projects. For Milan, Rangnick wants Matthias Jaissle, a young German coach currently plying his trade in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli. Jaissle is part of the Red Bull setup, having coached their Austrian teams Leifering and RB Salzburg. While a relatively unknown capacity when it comes to the upper echelons of European football, the 38-year-old has been garnering quite the name for himself out in Saudi Pro League, having just delivered a second consecutive AFC Champions League Elite title to Al-Ahli along with the Saudi Super Cup last year.It is also to be noted that Mauricio Pochettino remains in the picture. The Argentine coach, currently leading the US men’s national team, is poised to return to club football and was approached by Milan few days before their last-day debacle that saw them tumble down the Serie A table straight into the Europa League and triggered a mass exodus across their sporting hierarchy.Additionally, Andoni Iraola, who is leaving Bournemouth after leading them to European football for the first time ever, and Oliver Glasner, who is departing Crystal Palace after winning three titles with them in 12 months on the back of Conference League triumph earlier in the week, are also distant candidates for the job.Rangnick holds leverage, and Jaissle deserves a shot back in EuropeIt is no surprise Rangnick likes to be in charge when it comes to projects at any club. After the eleventh-hour collapse of his Milan agreement from last time, as well as the spectacular implosion that has come about at San Siro since the conclusion of the season, it is easy to see who holds all the cards in this negotiation. If he does arrive in Italy, if given time Rangnick could overhaul Milan’s sporting project and their fortunes, though that requires putting in him the kind of trust we usually don’t see being given to any one individual these days. Case in point, appointing a relative no-name like Matthias Jaissle to one of the hottest coaching seats in European football would be quite the leap of faith, though it would be a move very much up Rangnick’s alley. That said, Jaissle has been quite successful in Saudi Arabia, and while it is easy to be snobbish about anything football-related that transpires there, coaches have evidently performed there only to come back and deliver in Europe as well. For coaches, this is usually a more well-trodden path.Pochettino, meanwhile, is also one of those coaches who thrives on the back of a healthy relationship with the sporting directorship, which leaves him to focus on coaching while having a satisfactory amount of input in terms of squad-building. That said, if Rangnick arrives, expect Jaissle to be the one in the dugout come August.Anshuman Joshi | GIFN0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 43 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

Long Park in Longview, Wash., on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. (Karen Ducey /The Seattle Times via AP)2026-05-28T18:56:34Z LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — Authorities resumed the painstaking search Thursday for nine workers feared dead at a Washington state paper mill where a chemical tank ruptured, devastating a community where many families have worked in local mills for generations.Among the 11 people presumed dead, including the missing, are a grandfather who was always willing to help anyone and a young husband described as selfless and caring, according to friends who organized fundraisers for the victims’ families.Authorities have said there was no hope of finding survivors of Tuesday’s tank rupture at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. in Longview, which was of one of the deadliest U.S. workplace accidents in recent decades. The partially collapsed tank spilled more than 500,000 gallons (1.9 million liters) of a highly corrosive chemical mix called white liquor that is used to break down wood into certain types of paper products. Fire officials said Wednesday that the recovery of the missing would be slow and deliberate because of the dangers posed by the remaining chemicals. Authorities said the cause of the disaster is still under investigation and they haven’t released the names of those who were killed. Gilbert Bernal, a grandfather who was an electrician at the plant, was the first confirmed death, said his friend Todd Cornwell.“He was one of the most genuinely good people that you’ve ever met. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was always there willing to help in whatever needed to be done,” Cornwell said. Read More CJ Doran, who was 26, was among those presumed dead, according to a GoFundMe post verified by the crowdfunding site.He was a husband who was “the spiritual leader of their family, the joy of their home, and the family provider,” the post said. The tank failure also injured eight people, including a firefighter. Some suffered burns or inhalation injuries, authorities said. The mill’s Japanese parent company, Nippon Paper Group, said in a statement Wednesday that it was offering its “deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families.”Authorities said Wednesday that the the spill hadn’t contaminated the air and drinking water in and around Longview, a city of about 40,000 people near Washington’s border with Oregon that has deep ties to paper and lumber industries. Generations of families have worked in the mills, and many residents who spoke with The Associated Press had family members or friends who currently or previously worked at the Nippon Dynawave plant.Crews were working to flush water from ditches near the plant and dilute it before pumping it into the Columbia River, which flows by the mill. Some contamination has reached the river, but the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it has had no noticeable effect. ___Johnson reported from Seattle. APNEWS.COMMLB owners have proposed a salary cap for the first time since baseball’s 1994-95 strikeRob Manfred, commissioner of Major League Baseball answers questions during a news conference at the MLB winter meetings, Dec. 8, 2025, in Orlando, Fla. (AP Photo/John Raoux, file)2026-05-28T18:50:07Z Major League Baseball owners made their long-expected salary cap proposal to the players’ association on Thursday, a system the union has vowed never to accept, setting the sides on course for a confrontation that threatens the 2027 season and perhaps beyond.Baseball owners hadn’t proposed a firm cap since 1994. Their effort prompted a 7 1/2-month strike that forced the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years.MLB’s proposal would cap spending in 2027 at $245.3 million, using figures for luxury tax payrolls that include benefits and the pre-arbitration bonus pool, and establish a payroll floor of $171.2 million. The Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball’s biggest spenders, had a $415.2 million payroll on opening day this year — around $170 million over the proposed cap.Owners said they would discuss a phase-in schedule that would give teams like the Dodgers time to comply with the cap and an escrow system with the union as part of a proposed seven-year deal, that all current contracts would remain guaranteed and there would be no prohibition of guaranteed contracts under the cap system. MLB said it would centralize local media revenue from the 30 teams equally and give players a 50-50 split as part of a proposal that would eliminate the current revenue-sharing plan among the clubs. “Our salary cap and floor proposal levels the playing field while sharing baseball revenue with the players 50/50 as we grow the game together,” MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said in a statement. “Further, by sharing media revenue equally as part of our proposal, we can address another top fan concern of local TV blackouts.” Read More Baseball’s current five-year deal, agreed to in March 2022 after a 99-day lockout, expires Dec. 2. While a lockout next winter is expected, talks are not likely to intensify until late February or early March 2027, when the possibilities of losing regular-season games and revenue near. If regular-season games are lost, negotiations may become a standoff of which side can tolerate the most economic loss. Based on 2026 opening day figures, eight teams would have to cut payroll to get under the cap. The teams over are the two-time reigning World Series champion Dodgers, New York Mets ($379.2 million), New York Yankees ($339.6 million), Toronto ($319.5 million), Philadelphia ($315.2 million), Boston ($263.7 million), San Diego ($260.1 million) and Atlanta ($247.9 million).Twelve teams would be required to increase payroll by a total of $617 million based on 2026 numbers: Miami ($81.8 million), Cleveland ($95.7 million), Tampa Bay ($108.2 million), the Chicago White Sox ($108.6 million), St. Louis ($114.4 million), Washington ($119.1 million), Pittsburgh ($122.6 million), Minnesota ($125.6 million), Milwaukee ($130.9 million), the Athletics ($139.2 million), Colorado ($142.2 million) and Cincinnati ($148.8 million).Owners and the union agreed to a luxury tax in 2003 designed to slow spending, but teams feel it has had little or no impact on the Dodgers and Mets in recent years. The last small-market MLB club to win a World Series was Kansas City in 2015, although Cleveland, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee all lead their divisions as of Thursday, while the Mets and Red Sox are in last place. MLB said its revenue has grown by 247% since 2003 and player payroll has increased by 149% in that span.Management gave the union its latest plan during a bargaining session at the commissioner’s office, one day after the union made its economic proposal. Owners say a cap is needed to improve competitive balance and restrain wealthy teams from assembling starrier rosters than their smaller-market brethren.Players want expanded free agency and salary arbitration rights along with almost doubling the major league minimum, increasing the money high-revenue teams share with the less-wealthy clubs and establishing penalties for teams that drop below payroll floors.Other U.S. major sports leagues operate under a cap. The NBA had a cap in its initial season in 1946-47, then dropped that and began its modern version in 1984-85. NFL players and owners adopted a cap for the 1994 season, and the NHL did so in 2005-06 after a lockout wiped out the entire 2004-05 season. The Dodgers shattered MLB’s spending record with a combined $515 million in payroll and luxury tax last year en route to their second straight World Series title. Los Angeles’ total was seven times the $68.7 million payroll of the Marlins, the lowest-spending team, and more than the payrolls of the bottom six clubs combined.Players say a cap would hurt them and enrich owners, and they say they will never agree to one. Without a cap, MLB stars have landed lucrative, guaranteed contracts that outpace what the biggest stars in other U.S. sports leagues make. Juan Soto’s $765 million, 15-year contract with the Mets is believed to be the biggest ever in team sports and is far greater than the largest deals in the NFL (Patrick Mahomes at $450 million over 10 years) and NBA (Jayson Tatum at $314 million over five years). MLB’s last salary cap proposal in 1994 offered players a 50-50 split of revenue in a system that would have forced teams to maintain payrolls of 84-110% of the average. Salary arbitration would have been eliminated and the threshold for free agency would have been lowered from six years’ major league service to four — with the provision that a player’s former club could match any offer until he had six years.MLB’s offer came on June 14 that year, and players struck on Aug. Two days later, owners accepted the union’s offer to return to work without an agreement. A deal wasn’t reached until 1997.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 44 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen
