WWE Clash in Italy: 5 big takeaways for Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi, Rhea Ripley and more
WWE Clash in Italy took over Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy, Sunday evening in a night that did more to move stories along than end them. Roman Reigns vanquished Jacob Fatu, Brock Lesnar evened things up with Oba Femi, Cody Rhodes and Rhea Ripley retained their titles, and Sol Ruca earned the Women’s Intercontinental Championship. Here are five big takeaways as we move into WWE’s summer slate of rivalries. 1. Acknowledge himRoman Reigns did exactly what he said he would, putting Jacob Fatu down for the three-count and retaining his World Heavyweight Championship. Reigns and Fatu put on an expectedly violent Tribal Combat showdown, with Reigns neutralizing the Tongan Death Grip by slamming the challenger’s hand with a toolbox midway through the match, spearing him through the barricade, and ultimately forcing Fatu back into a support role. It never really felt like Fatu had a chance on this night, and in the end, it was two spears — one through the table and another regular one — that put Fatu down. After the match, Reigns saw Solo Sikoa and the MFT ringside, then yelled they were next. WWE couldn’t have forecasted the next steps in this one more clearly than Reigns and the Usos walking up the entrance ramp, Sikoa and the MFT sitting in the audience, and Fatu standing equal distance between the two factions. WWE capitalizing on the success of the first Bloodline run should be no surprise. The challenge here is how they evolve this story to make it just as interesting, if not more so, than the first iteration. As for Tribal Combat, I understand WWE has established the precedence of the match essentially being a no-holds-barred match with the finish coming by either pinfall or submission. But wouldn’t it have made more sense for it to be the equivalent of an “I Quit” match? It would have been much more satisfying Sunday for the loser to have to say “I acknowledge you” than succumbing to a typical finish, since that’s basically the entire premise of this stipulation match taking place. 2. Don’t Oba-ndon shipWhen Brock Lesnar ended his one-month retirement for a surprise return and beatdown of Oba Femi, it seemed pretty clear WWE was angling for at least two more big matches — likely at Clash in Italy, then SummerSlam later this year in Lesnar’s home state of Minnesota. Lesnar fulfilled his end of the bargain, bringing the fight to Femi in Italy and hitting “The Ruler” with everything in his arsenal. A whopping five F-5s, repeated kimuras, an F-5 through the announce table, and a final seventh F-5 in the ring was eventually just enough for Lesnar to win and even the score. Now for the rubber match, which pretty clearly is being set up for WWE’s mid-year super show. I don’t think this one ever had to be an even score heading into what will likely be their final showdown, but that’s the direction WWE opted for. In a different world, Femi beats Lesnar despite Lesnar throwing everything at him, forcing Lesnar to put his career on the line for one more match. In my opinion, that’s a far more interesting route to get here without forcing Femi to eat a loss. Having Femi lose at this point in his dominance felt unnecessary. Oba Femi is no longer undefeated in the WWE.WWE via Getty Images3. She’s got SolNow this was more like it. After a month of matches and segments where Sol Ruca and Becky Lynch couldn’t quite find their footing, they put together an exceptional showing Sunday in Italy. Ruca’s athleticism was featured prominently, Lynch sold her spots in expert fashion, and the champion was devious in trying to retain her belt. In the end, Ruca hit the Sol Snatcher to claim the Intercontinental Championship in a well-done match. The win for Ruca was a needed breath of fresh air for her young career and a true standout moment. How she builds on this will help determine just how high Ruca can climb this year. The same can be said for Lynch, who played her part perfectly to move this story forward. It’s clearly not the end here for Lynch and Ruca, and it’ll be interesting to see if they can build some real momentum now. If I’m being nit-picky, the continued confrontation between Lynch and referee Jessika Carr feels a lot like guys on “SmackDown” attacking general manager Nick Aldis — the direction signals an eventual match, but WWE seems hesitant to pull the trigger. Hopefully for both cases, we actually get resolution in the ring eventually. 4. Nothing to see hereSlotted for the opening match of the show and the first match on ESPN, Cody Rhodes and Gunther put on a showdown that very much felt like a main event. It was a classic contest from both men, resulting in some expected chaos (just perhaps not the chaos we assumed) to end a tilt that felt like it was just getting going. After a Cross Rhodes put Gunther on the mat, Gunther’s foot snuck under the bottom rope without the referee noticing. The controversial nature of the result gives Gunther and Rhodes the ammunition to keep their rivalry moving over the next month or so. From everything that’s happened of late, it seems clear Sami Zayn will be involved in some form or fashion over the next iteration of their program. And with WWE Night of Champions set for June 27, there’s nothing that could push Zayn over the edge better than losing another championship match in Saudi Arabia.5. One contender in, one contender outJade Cargill gave Rhea Ripley everything she could handle, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to get the job done.Cargill dominated the majority of the match and seemed poised to retain the belt she lost at WrestleMania. First it was B-Fab and Michin putting Cargill’s foot on the rope to curb the near-fall, then it was Charlotte Flair evening the odds and putting Ripley’s foot on the rope to avoid Ripley dropping the championship. WWE seemed to really emphasize Flair distracting Cargill, opening the door for a Riptide and Ripley win. The women’s title scene has been messy in the build to Sunday’s premium live event, and the intention to elevate Flair back into that picture seems quite clear. Her staring down Cargill and brushing her away alludes to more competition for that No. 1 contender spot rather than Flair directly competing for the title. If WWE wants to build toward another mega-showdown at SummerSlam, planting the seeds for Flair against Ripley feels like the right direction.

Joshua Kimmich thrilled witjh Germany’s 4-0 win over Finland
In the standings, Germany’s 4-0 World Cup tune-up victory over Finland does not mean anything, but the way the squad feels about its performance could go a long way in helping this unit establish an identity and camaraderie. Bayern Munich star and Germany captain Joshua Kimmich was very pleased with what he saw. “We didn’t allow them much over 90 minutes, practically nothing, and deservedly won the game. We wanted to implement our high pressing as often as possible, and that led to a goal through Deniz. We scored a goal from a counter-attack, and we scored from a set piece. It was a mixed bag. We have a lot of talent in our team, and we need to bring that talent onto the pitch every game,” Kimmich said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Kimmich played a key role aside of his leadership duties. Playing out of position at right-back, Kimmich look extremely good and contributed an assist in the winning effort. Clearly, the captain wants to see his boys build off of this and carry some momentum into the next match against the United States. Canes Stanley Cup Final run brings buzz, big crowds to Raleigh ahead of Game 1
The countdown is on in Raleigh, with just days to go before the Carolina Hurricanes host Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at Lenovo Center. The arena is expected to be packed Tuesday night, with tickets already sold out as excitement builds across the Triangle.Watch parties, crowds expected across the TriangleFans who can't get inside Lenovo Center are still expected to show up in big numbers, with watch parties planned at bars, outdoor venues and gathering spots throughout the area. The Hurricanes' return to the Stanley Cup Final -- their first in two decades -- is drawing fans from across the region, creating a major boost for local businesses and game-day energy.Hurricanes enter as favoritesOff the ice, sportsbooks are also weighing in on the matchup. Despite Las Vegas ties to the opposing Golden Knights, oddsmakers currently list the Hurricanes as the favorite.Johnny Avello, Director of Sports Operations at DraftKings, says Game 1 could play a key role in shaping those odds."If the Hurricanes win Game 1, they become a much stronger favorite," Avello said, noting that home ice advantage and team performance both factor into the line.He added that while the Golden Knights' playoff run -- including a dominant series win over Colorado -- has impressed bettors, the Hurricanes' strong postseason record shows they can "win convincingly."The Hurricanes will host the first two games of the series at Lenovo Center before heading to Las Vegas, giving Raleigh an early edge in the championship matchup. For fans and players alike, the focus is simple: four more wins. And whether inside the sold-out arena or watching from across the Triangle, Hurricanes fans are ready to rally behind their team as the Stanley Cup Final begins.

Seahawks DT Byron Murphy II poised to earn All-Pro nod in 2026
Is Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Byron Murphy II poised to garner an All-Pro nod in 2026?Murphy emerged as a standout defensive tackle in his second year in the league last season. The Texas native was selected by the Seahawks with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and showed that he was worth being drafted that high with his play in 2026 for Seattle, though he was not recognized with an end-of-season award.According to Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker, Murphy II is one of 10 players that have yet to garner All-Pro honors in their careers that has a strong chance to do so next season. “The Seahawks’ defense should be championship-caliber yet again even after losing a handful of pieces, giving Murphy another year to build along a ferocious front,” Locker said. “If the former first-rounder can play more consistently on the ground, he’s capable of reaching another level of stardom in Year 3.”Murphy recorded seven sacks and seven tackles for loss last season. He played with a level of quickness and speed in the interior that helped Seattle win the Super Bowl at the end of the season.Given his outstanding physical capabilities, coupled with the trajectory that he’s on in the early part of his career, Murphy is liable to play at an even higher level next season and garner an All-Pro nod. This article originally appeared on Seahawks Wire: Is Seahawks DT Byron Murphy II poised to earn All-Pro nod in 2026?

GB's Burgin beats Wanyonyi to win Diamond League 800m
Great Britain's Max Burgin powered clear of a world-class field to win the 800m at the Diamond League meeting in Morocco. The 24-year-old crossed the line in one minute and 42.98 seconds, with fast-finishing Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi second (1:43.56).Victory at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat was Burgin's first Diamond League triumph.Algeria's Slimane Moula was third, while Ireland's Mark English came 11th in 1:45.00."I expected a race like this where someone would push me to my maximum," Wanyonyi said."I have done my best and 1:43 is not a bad time for me. My focus this season will be on the 800m, not the 1500m."Elsewhere, GB's Matthew Hudson-Smith finished second in the 400m in 44.25 seconds, behind the USA's Jacory Patterson who ran a meeting record 44.11."It's good to be back, I have had a lot of niggles but it is a great opener. Now I need to build on that for the rest of the season," Hudson-Smith said.GB's Molly Caudery finished seventh in the pole vault with a jump of 4.60m - 20cm behind winner Nina Kennedy of Australia.American Kenny Bednarek blew away the rest of the field as he cruised to victory in the 200m in 19.69, with Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana in second.Home favourite Soufiane El Bakkali capped the evening in style with a world-leading time of 7:57.25 as he won the men's 3,000m steeplechase.El Bakkali secured his fifth consecutive victory at the Rabat meeting, while Frederik Ruppert broke the European record to finish second in 7:57.80.Geordie Beamish, the New Zealander who created a huge shock by beating El Bakkali to gold at last year's world championships in Tokyo, finished a distant 13th.

Tsimikas set for Liverpool return and stay
Tsimikas set for Liverpool return and stayKostas Tsimikas’s adventure at Roma is likely over. The Greek, who arrived on loan this summer, will not remain at the court of Gian Piero Gasperini, with whom he has never had a great rapport. Returning to Liverpool, the club that owns him, according to English journalist Ben Jacobs, the full-back would like to play his chances of staying, boosted by the spot on the left flank that has opened up with the departure of Andy Robertson.Tsimikas, whom Roma had high expectations for, has undoubtedly disappointed. This season, he’s provided just one assist (in the Europa League against Nice) and hasn’t scored in 25 league and Europa League appearances, and he’s almost always been favored on the left flank by more adaptable players like Wesley and Rensch.

Jamal Musiala relieved to score in second full match since his return from injury
HERZOGENAURACH, GERMANY - MAY 30: Jamal Musiala of Germany, talks to the media during a press conference at Homeground on May 30, 2026 in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Germany are preparing in Herzogenaurach for their upcoming international friendly matches, before heading out to the United States to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026. (Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images) | Getty Images On the bright side, Jamal Musiala has scored in back-to-back games for Germany. Unfortunately, there was a gap of 434 days to separate those two matches. That’s right, Musiala’s last appearance for his national team was in the second leg of last year’s UEFA Nations League quarterfinal stage when Germany held off Italy’s last surge to move into the semifinals. After suffering the devastating leg injury against Paris Saint-Germain in last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, Musiala ferociously attacked his rehabilitation to return six months later. However, he missed all of World Cup qualifying and was solely focused on just making the roster. After Germany’s easy 4-0 win over Finland, Musiala took some time to reflect on the team and his journey.“We haven’t had many training sessions, but we managed to implement what we wanted into the game and created many chances,” said Musiala (via @iMiaSanMia). “I hope everyone enjoyed it. It feels good to play 90 minutes; I haven’t scored in a while, so I’m taking a good feeling into the next games. On a personal level, I feel good. I think the 90 minutes were beneficial for me.”Musiala failed to record a goal or assist in his last six matches with Bayern Munich. It was important for his confidence end that streak ahead of the big tournament.Musiala has only played two full matches since January. Coincidentally, he also scored in that 4-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor… Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts

Celine Boutier rallies from 4 down to win ShopRite LPGA
GALLOWAY, N.J. — Celine Boutier rallied from a four-shot deficit Sunday, making three birdies around the turn on her way to a 5-under 66 for a one-shot victory over Arpichaya Yubol in the ShopRite LPGA.Soo Bin Joo, the 22-year-old South Korean going for her first LPGA Tour title, lost her four-shot lead at the turn and then fell behind for good on the 13th hole, the same hole where earlier Boutier had taken the lead with a 30-foot birdie putt.Joo missed another fairway to the right into a clumpy lie, pitched back to the fairway, sent her wedge over the green with a front pin, chipped 8 feet by the hole and missed the putt, taking a double bogey to fall three shots behind.Boutier kept hitting solid shots, rarely getting in trouble. She missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the final hole to post at 9-under 204, and no one could catch her.“To have a chance to win today is definitely something very special,” said Boutier, the 32-year-old French player who won the ShopRite LPGA five years ago. “I think it’s great tournament, very special for me, so really excited to be able to have another win here.”Yubol, who was penalized one shot in the second round Saturday for going over her maximum time, birdied the last two holes for a 66. It was her second runner-up finish of the year, having finished four shots behind Nelly Korda in Mexico.Lauren Walsh (67) finished third, followed by Joo among four players who tied for fourth.“It was so fun. It was my first time leading the tournament, and I think I did my best out there as much as I can and I prepared well and I’m very proud of myself,” Joo said. “I was trying to do my best to stay mentally calm, and I think I still got to work on that a little more.”Chizzy Iwai, who also started four shots behind, had two birdies in three holes, but then closed with 15 straight pars.Boutier finished the front nine with two straight birdies to reach 7 under, and that gave her a share of the lead when Joo made bogey on the par-4 eighth. Boutier then hit her approach to 4 feet for birdie on 10th. Joo caught her with a birdie on the ninth but couldn’t keep up the rest of the way.The ShopRite LPGA is one of two 54-hole events on the schedule, and the field was particularly weak this year — one player from the top 10 — because of timing. The U.S. Women’s Open is next week across the country in Los Angeles, held at Riviera for the first time.Boutier now has seven career LPGA title and 12 worldwide. She has struggled to start this year, with a tie for ninth her best finish among 10 tournaments.“I feel like my game has turned around the last few weeks. I could see it coming together, and I definitely did not expect it to come together this week and today,” she said. “But I’m super excited to be back in the winner’s circle.”

Deniz Undav’s impact for Germany can’t be denied

Undav is averaging a goal every 57 minutes — yes, one goal every 57 minutes! The VfB Stuttgart, who Nagelsmann himself threw some shade at not too long ago, is now looking like Germany’s best option to man the No. 9 position: 57 – Deniz Undav benötigte für Deutschland im Schnitt nur 57 Spielminuten pro Tor (6 Tore in 342 Minuten) – das ist die beste Quote aller Nationalspieler seit Amtsantritt von Julian Nagelsmann (mind. 2 Einsätze). Facts.Undav’s three goal contributions (two goals, on assist) led Germany’s 4-0 victory before the striker left the match with a knock. Per reports, it is nothing serious — and that is a good thing for Nagelsmann and Germany. If Undav can stay healthy and hot, Germany might have a legitimate threat at the No. 9 position. No previous French Open champions left - who will seize chance?
Iga Swiatek's fourth-round defeat by Marta Kostyuk was her earliest exit since making her French Open debut in 2019 [Getty Images]When Iga Swiatek was dumped out of the French Open on Sunday, it meant there were no previous champions left in either the men's or women's singles draws.Opportunity knocks. But who will seize their chance over the next seven days in Paris?Grand Slam champions and highly ranked players - led by top seed Aryna Sabalenka - remain in a women's tournament which it was always anticipated would be a scrap. The men's draw was predicted to be a one-horse race won by top seed Jannik Sinner. Now there is guaranteed to be a first-time Grand Slam winner.Following Swiatek's exit, BBC Sport analyses who still has a chance of adding their name to the illustrious list of Roland Garros champions next weekend.Swiatek's skittling ensures new championMarta Kostyuk is one of the nine women's players left who have never reached a Grand Slam final [Getty Images]Swiatek was bestowed the title of 'Queen of Clay' on her way to the rare feat of winning three consecutive Roland Garros titles between 2022 and 2024.But, after losing in the semi-finals last year, the fourth seed was beaten by Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round.Poland's Swiatek, whose defeat came on her 25th birthday, remains in a crisis of confidence. When Kostyuk started to put her under pressure, and the scoreline swung away, a panicking Swiatek started buckling on serve and returning wildly."I know that I lost because I was tense, and my body couldn't really do the proper things," she said. "But it's not the first time, as well, so I just need to work on it."While Swiatek allowed Kostyuk to run away with victory, the 23-year-old Ukrainian should not be done a disservice.Kostyuk, who won the Rouen and Madrid titles coming in, played confidently and smartly to continue to ask questions of Swiatek from the baseline."Things change in tennis, but I'm much more consistent. I'm the most consistent I have ever been in my career," said the 15th seed, who has won all 16 of her clay-court matches this season.Kostyuk still feels she has a "long way" to go to crack the top five or top 10.While she might simply have been modest, she has another opportunity to test her credentials against seventh seed Elina Svitolina in an all-Ukrainian quarter-final.The other quarter-final in their part of the draw pits Sorana Cirstea, whose impending retirement is fuelling the 36-year-old Romanian's success, against Russian eighth seed Mirra Andreeva. It means a first-time Grand Slam finalist will emerge from this section. On the other side of the draw, Sabalenka is the standout contender as she looks to win the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen for the first time.Osaka is likely to be a difficult obstacle after finally finding her feet on clay, while American 19th seed Madison Keys - who won the 2025 Australian Open title - could await the winner in the quarter-finals.Outside of those three, none of the other women still to play in the outstanding fourth-round matches have ever reached a Grand Slam semi-final.Sabalenka v Osaka in French Open night sessionTitle favourite Zverev cruises into quarter-finalsKostyuk beats four-time French Open winner SwiatekHow men's top half became a free-for-allFormer Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini is the lowest-ranked player left in the men's draw, having missed eight Grand Slams in the past five years through injury [Getty Images]Not only will there be a first-time French Open winner in the men's draw - there will be a first-time Grand Slam winner.Two-time reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz did not come to Paris because of a wrist injury, meaning Sinner's shock exit blew everything wide open. When 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic also fell by the wayside, it ensured a new name will go into the record books. The top half - where the fourth-round matches are being played on Monday - is a free-for-all.Italy's Matteo Berrettini is the lowest-ranked man left at 105th in the world, but is the one with experience of a major final, having lost to Djokovic in the 2021 Wimbledon final.Canadian fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime is the highest-ranked player, while American 19th seed Frances Tiafoe also has notable pedigree. The dearth of obvious contenders in this section, though, means German second seed Alexander Zverev remains the strong favourite. It represents 29-year-old Zverev's best chance to finally land the first major which he has been long predicted to win. There are still tricky obstacles that threaten to derail him.Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar will be his quarter-final opponent, a match-up where he has the far greater experience, but there is also the risk of scar tissue from his previous three Grand Slam finals reappearing. But, without Djokovic and Sinner left to play, Zverev should feel more confidence that nobody can stop him - other than himself. Why is this Roland Garros so open? There are a number of obvious factors which have combined to blow open the singles draws - injury, sickness, the ageing process and the unusual heatwave which hit Paris. The searing temperatures lasted for almost a week and may have had a cumulative physical effect on some players. The heat has also changed the clay conditions considerably, with firmer surfaces making the ball bounce higher and loosening string tension.Another theory is that the weight of opportunity is becoming a burden on those left in the men's draw."I do think we're seeing the men deal with it for the first time in a really long time where it feels completely wide open," said Keys."They should really get their heads around it."Nine of the 16 men's third-round matches went to a deciding fifth set - the first time this has happened in the Open era - while Jodar and Jakub Mensik needed to go all the way to reach the quarter-finals on Sunday.Tennis has always been a sport where mentality is equally as important as the technical aspect, but the volume of five-setters underline why this French Open feels more about the ability between the ears than any other major in recent years.Live scores, results and order of playGet tennis news sent straight to your phone

Three Observations from Germany’s smooth 4-0 friendly win over Finland
LUDWIGSBURG, GERMANY - MARCH 30: Deniz Undav of Germany celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the international friendly match between Germany and Ghana at MHP Arena on March 30, 2026 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. (Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images) | Getty Images In Germany’s last home match before flying to North America this week, Julian Nagelsmann’s squad wore down an outmatched Finland side. Deniz Undav secured a brace while Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala also found the back of the net. There were very few physical challenges and Germany came away relatively unscathed, pending the status of Undav.Who is running Germany’s offense? In the first half, Florian Wirtz was making a lot of noise in the early action then disappeared for large stretches. Lennart Karl had a few nice runs but did not anticipate the next level of defenders being around. Jamal Musiala can dribble through tight spaces, but did not generate a lot of opportunities either.Just like Bayern Munich, Serge Gnabry was probably the solution. It is a shame that he will miss the entire World Cup after such a fantastic year. Felix Nmecha and Aleksandar Pavlović are decent distributors, but rarely create the passes that lead to a shot on target.Tonight proved that the simple answer is a committee approach. Different players will step up in different moments. This will make it difficult for opponents to focus on shutting down one specific area of Germany’s offense.Julian Nagelsmann still has a right-back problemIt feels like no coincidence that Joshua Kimmich’s primary contribution tonight was in the attacking third. Kimmich properly supported Lennart Karl, sent in dangerous crosses, and kept the ball moving as a third central defensive midfielder.Against lesser opponents, Joshua Kimmich will be visibly underutilized at right-back. Against better opponents, Kimmich will be forced to help out more in the midfield and attack, leaving the right flank exposed. Jonathan Tah is a solid defender but can’t cover that whole side of the pitch by himself against speedy wingers or counterattacks.Nagelsmann may also not have the luxury of waiting until the knockout rounds for Aleksandar Pavlović and Felix Nmecha to transform their budding chemistry into an asset rather than a work in progress. Kimmich and Pavlović played a lot of minutes together at Bayern this season and would immediately bring stability to the middle of the pitch.Deniz Undav proves his worth to the teamAfter a fantastic run of form throughout the Rückrunde and deep tournament runs in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal, Undav only scored two goals and one assist in his last eight appearances. Kai Havertz spent the weekend walking around Puskás Aréna (except that moment of brilliance), gifting the perfect opportunity for Undav to make his case as the better fit in Germany’s starting XI.For most of the first half, Undav was lethargic, lost, and lacked chemistry with the rest of the squad. The other attackers were simply moving at a different pace than Undav. Wirtz and Musiala both presented Undav with quality balls in front of the net and he squandered those chances. But there is a lot of value in Undav’s opportunistic style. On Undav’s first goal, Lukáš Hradeckýand both of Finland’s defenders could have taken one step toward the ball and prevented the header. On Undav’s second goal, the defender thought he had the proper position, until Undav accelerated at the last moment and used his upper body strength to overwhelm the defender and tap in the finish. Here’s the solution. Against lesser teams, let Undav start and find these weird goals. There will be enough opportunities that he doesn’t need to be super efficient. He just needs to be a shark. Against the better teams, let Havertz start and mentally wear down the opponent. This should keep both players fresh, hungry, and engaged throughout the tournament. Don’t forget to add Nick Woltemade as a tertiary piece of the puzzle.Bonus ObservationsNathaniel Brown looks to be the guy at left-back. He just needs to sharpen his focus when he is in defensive mode. Luckily, he is only 22 years old and he will naturally develop with time and experience. His star continues to rise.Cyan shorts, pink cleats, and a dark blue jersey. Draw your own conclusions.Did you catch Aleksandar Pavlović accidentally poking Deniz Undav in the eye after one of the goals? If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor… Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts

5 ways Álex Palou showed IndyCar dominance at the Detroit Grand Prix
The 1.7-mile track at the Detroit Grand Prix, featuring a hairpin turn, stretches of concrete, bumpy asphalt and hundreds of manhole covers, can make the best drivers look downright amateur. Chip Ganassi's Álex Palou, though, aced every one of those challenges for the second time in his career, leaving no doubt as to the best driver on the IndyCar circuit.Palou won the 2026 Detroit Grand Prix over 2025 winner Kyle Kirkwood, starting the race in the pole position and leading for 71 of the race's 100 laps. And even for most of those 29 laps he didn't lead, there wasn't much doubt that he would finish on top – unless you ask Palou yourself."It didn't feel like we were leading that much," Palou said after the race. "I know we were leading, but, man, it was a lot of work."The limitations of the cars, IndyCar rules and the Detroit street course require more than speed to determine a winner. A victory in Detroit requires smart planning, quick adjustments, good timing and flawless execution – all of which Palou showed on Sunday. Here are the five moments from Detroit that demonstrated why no one in IndyCar is racing better than Palou.Starting up frontRECAP: Álex Palou dominates 2026 Detroit Grand Prix for 4th win of seasonIt's easier to finish in first place when you start up top.Palou finished as the leader in Saturday's qualifying laps, his fastest lap coming in 0.22 seconds ahead of Andretti Global's Will Power (who briefly overtook Palou for first place in the first half of Sunday's race). And in a street race that doesn't foster as many passing opportunities as a road race or oval race, starting on the pole often gives drivers a huge advantage for race day. When asked after the race what set his team apart from others, Palou was quick to answer."Track position, being able to be up front was key," he said.Merely starting up front isn't everything, of course. But there were several decisions throughout the race that kept Palou up front and, eventually, separated him from the rest of the pack.Racing softBarry Wanser, strategist for Chip Ganassi Racing, didn't have an in-depth strategy when it came to choosing the tires for Palou's race."He just didn't want to finish on the [soft tires], so that made it easy for us," Wanser said. The warming weather in Detroit forced drivers into various strategies for how they would distribute their two required soft-tire stretches. Early in the race, Palou made it clear over the radio that he wanted to finish on the standard tires to give him an advantage towards the end of the race, meaning he would have to use the soft tires on his first two stretches."Obviously, the tires were a big factor," Palou said. "We kind of figured that the crossover was about 15 green laps before the primaries were better."And when it came to timing those changes, Palou's team performed perfectly.RecalibratingPower, a three-time champ when the Detroit Grand Prix was run on Belle Isle, passed Palou on Lap 17 and held that lead with impressive defensive maneuvers for 18 laps. Palou fell even further behind on Lap 31 trying to retake the lead over Power, with Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin and Arrow McLaren's Christian Lundgaard overtaking Palou after what Palou admits was a "mistake" on the maneuver. But instead of trying to make up for his mistake in the moment, Palou made his most consequential decision of the day – going to the pit on Lap 35 for his first tire change of the day when most drivers were still jockeying for position.Palou admitted he got lucky with his timing, but that's only part of the story. Power appeared to lose momentum after pitting himself, falling too far behind the rest of the pack despite having just led for 18 laps.Palou, meanwhile, got a head start with a clearer track as most of the drivers headed to the pit, needing three laps to go from 16th place to fourth place and then only three more to retake the lead. From there, Palou's win felt like a foregone conclusion.Pushing to passThe closest a driver came to passing Palou in the late stages of the race was Kirkwood after the final restart, where he trailed Palou by less than a second and had a small advantage in push-to-pass time. But after the final green flag waved, Palou used his push-to-pass immediately – not necessarily to get far ahead of Kirkwood, but to force Kirkwood to use much of his push-to-pass just to keep up.And with Kirkwood using soft tires in the final stretch, he was no match to keep up with Palou and his standard tires in the final laps."I think we had more pace than him because of the tires," Palou said. "Once my tires were up to temperature on the primaries, I was able to control the pace and the grip of the car."Palou admitted that he might have been in trouble had there been another restart at the end of the race, especially with Kirkwood finishing with more push-to-start time than him. But fortunately for Palou, his plan paid off.Finishing cleanUltimately, Kirkwood and Palou went for opposite strategies – Kirkwood using the standard tires in the middle part of the race to push from sixth place to second, and Palou saving his standard tires for the end to race away from any challengers. Palou ended up finishing 3 seconds ahead of Kirkwood and more than 5 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Graham Rahal.Rahal, who moved up to ninth in the overall standings following the podium finish, commented on the need for drivers to bounce back from "bad weekends" before adding a caveat to his statement."Maybe not with Álex, he's in a league of his own," Rahal said. And as Palou now has a commanding 62-point lead over Kirkwood in the overall standings after having won half of this season's eight races – with no other driver owning more than one victory – it might take a few bad weekends for Palou to fall from his top spot.Otherwise, you might as well pencil the Spaniard in for a record-tying fourth-straight championship. A league of his own, indeed. Need to catch up on the news during your lunch break? Sign up for our Sports Briefing newsletter to get daily summaries of Detroit sports! Record shattered! Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer script fastest fifty in IPL final history as RCB storm chase
NEW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bengaluru launched a stunning assault in the IPL 2026 final, rewriting the record books as Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer raced to the fastest team fifty ever recorded in an IPL final on Sunday.Chasing 156 for victory against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, RCB reached the 50-run mark in just 3.3 overs, eclipsing the previous record of 4 overs set by Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 final at the same venue. The blistering start put defending champions RCB firmly in control after their bowlers had earlier restricted Gujarat to 155 for 8.Kohli-Iyer unleash carnageThe opening pair came out with clear intent and immediately took the attack to Gujarat's bowlers.Kohli, whose iconic No. 18 jersey dominated the stands, was at his aggressive best. The batting superstar hammered 23 runs off just eight deliveries, finding boundaries with remarkable ease and sending the packed crowd into a frenzy. At the other end, Venkatesh Iyer matched him stroke for stroke. The left-hander smashed 26 off only 13 balls as the duo tore into the Gujarat attack during the powerplay.By the time RCB crossed the fifty-run mark in the fourth over, the previous record had already been consigned to history. The explosive opening stand underlined Bengaluru's determination to finish the job after producing a near-perfect performance with the ball.Bowlers set the platformEarlier, Rajat Patidar's decision to bowl first paid immediate dividends.RCB's pace attack dismantled Gujarat's top order, with Josh Hazlewood removing captain Shubman Gill for 10 before Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Sai Sudharsan for 12 in the very next over.Unheralded pacer Rasikh Salam emerged as the standout performer, claiming 3 for 27 from his four overs. Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar chipped in with two wickets apiece, while Krunal Pandya delivered a crucial breakthrough by stumping Jos Buttler for 19.Only Washington Sundar offered significant resistance, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 50 off 37 deliveries to help Gujarat post a fighting total.

🎥 Brazil watch Panama grow into the friendly, but lead at half-time
🎥 Brazil watch Panama grow into the friendly, but lead at half-timeThe festive atmosphere ramped up in the very first minute of play at the Maracanã.But they forgot to “run it by” Panama, currently 33rd in the FIFA Ranking and also set to play in the World Cup. There was no easy ride in the first half of this Sunday’s (31) friendly, but Brazil went into the break leading 2-1. With Vinicius Junior putting on a great display.Vini Jr. ON FIRE and... an unexpected responseBrazil were already ahead before the clock had even ticked past the first minute.Casemiro won the ball back, the No. 7 charged forward leaving Córdoba behind, and finished brilliantly.Vini Jr. stepped up again shortly afterward.Brazil controlled the action and kept looking for more space. Then Panama won a free kick. Michael Murillo took it, Matheus Cunha got a touch, and Panama scored after the ball completely changed direction (14').Brazil’s task was to find new openings against a fired-up opponent. And it was the Concacaf side that forced Alisson into action in the 32nd minute after an effort from Ismael Díaz.Vini Jr. + Casemiro = ⚽The tension eased in the 39th minute. Another move from the No. 7 ended with a header from Casemiro, who celebrated his 11th goal of the season with the deflection. The assistant initially flagged for offside, but VAR said otherwise.Raphinha also had a great chance to extend the lead. And at the other end, Waterman forced Alisson into another save in stoppage time.It really is a meaningful test with the World Cup in mind. Do they already need to make substitutions? It’s worth noting that ELEVEN substitutions will be allowed in this friendly. In other words: Ancelotti will be able to test a considerable number of players. On the bench are: Weverton, Ederson, Danilo, Douglas Santos, Ibañez, Fabinho, Danilo Santos, Paquetá, Endrick, Igor Thiago and Rayan.Who should come on at halftime? Charles Schwab Challenge purse, payouts: Russell Henley overtakes Eric Cole in a playoff to win at Colonial
At long last, it seemed as if Eric Cole was finally going to pick up his inaugural PGA Tour win on Sunday afternoon. Russell Henley ruined that moment. Henley came surging ahead down the stretch and ended his day with three straight birdies to force a playoff at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Henley then made quick work of Cole on the opening playoff hole, and stuck his approach just four feet from the cup for an easy birdie and the win.And as a result, Henley will take home a $1.782 million check.Cole entered the final round with a one-shot lead, thanks to a 7-under 63 he posted on Saturday. Cole made four birdies in his first eight holes of the third round and matched the best round of the tournament at that point. Cole got off to a quick start on Sunday, too, and opened the round with back-to-back birdies. But he made the turn back with just a share of the lead after a rough double bogey at the ninth, which just barely stopped short of the cup. Cole offset that bogey with a birdie two holes later, and then rode out his round with seven straight pars the rest of the way. Russell Henley, however, was making a surge in the group ahead. Henley, who opened with an eagle and a birdie, finished his day with three straight birdies to grab a share of the lead after he sank a huge putt on the final green. That was enough to force the playoff, and eventually set up Henley’s win.Cole entered this week at No. 117 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He now has three top-10 finishes in his last four starts. Cole turned professional back in 2009. The 37-year-old, who wears the MLB logo on his shirt, is the son of two former professional golfers. His father, Bobby Cole, won once in his PGA Tour career back at the 1977 Buick Open. Cole’s mother, Laura Baugh, was the LPGA’s Rookie of the Year in 1973.Henley, who carded a 3-under 67, has now won six times on Tour in his career. He finished T3 at the Masters last month, but missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Here’s a look at how much Henley and the rest of the field earned this week in Fort Worth.Charles Schwab Challenge payouts1. Odell Beckham Jr. is "hoping for the best" in a potential return to the Giants
The Giants need another receiver, after the recent torn Achilles tendon suffered by Gunner Olszewski. Could Odell Beckham Jr. be the answer?Beckham spoke to the New York Post on Saturday, at linebacker Brian Burns's charity softball game."You know, it’s a place I never wanted to leave," Beckham told the Post. "And it's just a special place in my heart just to see all these Big Blue jerseys. Just hoping for the best."So where do things stand?"I think you just rely on the things you always rely on, which is my faith," Beckham said. "And, you know, God has a place of special purpose and journey for me, and just being able to spend that time away, just made me realize some things. You know, I left some things unfinished, so hopefully we'll see what he's got working out."What would he say to anyone who questions whether Beckham still has it?"I guess we gonna find out soon," Beckham said.Via Ryan Dunleavy of the Post, the Giants will be working out free-agent receivers on Monday. Beckham reportedly will be among the attendees.Earlier this month, Giants coach John Harbaugh left the door open for a potential Beckham signing, with a caveat.“It’s got to be right for both parties," Harbaugh said, "and Odell wants to be the kind of player that can make a difference. I’m pretty sure that he can make a team in the National Football League right now. But can he make a difference?"The biggest question is where he'd land on the depth chart. Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Calvin Austin III are the expected starters. Olszewski is a backup and a kick returner. The team's anticipated use of Beckham also will determine the contract he'd be offered. Given that he hasn't played since the 2024 season, the Giants likely wouldn't be making a major financial commitment. Which means he likely wouldn't be in a position to make a major impact. That's the real question. Does he simply want to be on the team? Does he want to be on the field most of the time? Is he expecting to get a lot of passes thrown his way? Both sides need to be on the same page about Beckham's role. It won't be what it was from 2014 through 2018. Will whatever the Giants are willing to give him be enough? The answer will determine whether there's a deal to be done.

Arsenal fans turn streets red for victory parade
Hundreds of thousands of Arsenal fans filled north London's streets for a jubilant celebration of the club's first Premier League title in 22 years.Proudly displaying the coveted trophy, the players waved to the crowds from open-top buses as the Gunners travelled a five-mile loop through Islington, circling Emirates Stadium. They were joined by the women's team, who lifted the first-ever Fifa Women's Champions Cup earlier in the season. The victory parade comes a day after the men's team lost a nail-biting Champions League final against Paris St-Germain in a penalty shootout in Budapest.Arsenal paraded the Premier League trophy along a roughly five-mile route in north London on open-top buses [TOLGA AKMEN/EPA/Shutterstock]Crowds of fans were reaching their arms out towards buses as they travelled along the parade route.Flags were waving with the players hyping up the crowd, occasionally throwing Arsenal scarves out towards the fans.Fireworks could be heard along with the deafening sound of the vuvuzelas. The air seemed to turn red but the Gunners' fans were anything but angry as they cheered their heroes [EPA]Joe, who attended the parade with his young son Trey, told the BBC: "We've been knocking on the door for the last four seasons and we've finally done it. I'm so excited."Joe and his son Trey got front-row spots for Sunday's parade [BBC]Following the team's European near-miss on Saturday, Trey added: "In the late 2010s, they weren't in the best form, they weren't finishing in the top... six every season. So, it was a struggle."But now, since 2022, we've been finishing in the Champions League spots."It feels surreal to come up against such a good team with PSG."Theresa, pictured with her family, was among fans celebrating in north London [BBC]Another fan out celebrating was Theresa, who was born streets away from Arsenal's home ground. She told the BBC: "You could say I've been a fan since I was born."While she did see Arsenal win the trophy two decades years ago, she said: "It has been a long time since Arsenal has had anything to scream and roar about."Fans used flares to fill the air with red smoke to match the Arsenal's team colour [EPA]Michael and Teju were also enjoying the parade. Michael said he has been "an Arsenal fan since [Thierry] Henry - and Teju as my partner is one by default".He said the club's win was "a dream come true" and "it's only up from here - I'm over the moon".He said his favourite player at the moment was Myles Lewis-Skelly. A 74-minute game? Unusual finish for Sporting Jax men's soccer
Storms halt action early: Professional soccer is a 90-minute game, except when it's not. Following persistent storms and a delay of more than two hours at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium, Sporting Club Jacksonville's USL Championship men's soccer game was declared official in the 74th minute as a 2-2 draw against Brooklyn FC on May 31.Sporting Jax comeback: Four days after blowing a three-goal lead to San Antonio FC, this time it was Sporting Jax's turn for a multi-goal comeback. Tyshawn Rose's 20-yard blast put Sporting Jax on the board before halftime, and in the 55th minute, Edgardo Rito stole the ball from a Brooklyn defender and passed wide left. Kieran Sadlier received the ball, dribbled around an opponent and crossed low for Rafferty Pedder's tying finish.Brooklyn starts fast: Last in the league, Sporting Jax looked set for another rocky day early. Brooklyn's Peter Mangione scored eight minutes in off a rebound after 19-year-old midfielder CJ Olney had burned the right side of Jacksonville's defense, and Olney then set up Stefan Stojanovic for a 23rd-minute scoring header on a counter.Busy day for Olivares: Sporting Jax keeper and league save leader Christian Olivares repeatedly came up big on an 18-shot day for Brooklyn, particularly with a quick-reaction double save in the second half to deny Mangione and Juan Obregon. The USL credited Olivares with seven saves.Quick free kicks: Referee Benjamin Meyer stopped the game in the second half as lightning approached, and after waiting for conditions to improve, league officials declared the result official around 6 p.m. The remaining 16 minutes will not be made up. … Sporting Jax (0-8-3) remains without a USL Championship victory following the draw with Brooklyn (2-7-2), which ranks next-to-last in the Eastern Conference.Up next: Sporting Jax remains at home for another game in the in-season USL Cup tournament, taking on the Tampa Bay Rowdies at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 6.This article originally appeared on Florida Times-Union: Sporting Club Jacksonville-Brooklyn FC men's soccer score

A.J. Hinch Under Fire Following Head-Scratching Decision vs. White Sox
Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has earned plenty of goodwill during his time in Detroit. But after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox, many fans are wondering if that goodwill is finally beginning to run out.The Tigers completed a disastrous month of May with another loss, falling to 22-38 on the season and extending their slide to 21 losses in their last 25 games. The defeat wasn’t just painful because it completed a sweep at the hands of a White Sox team that lost 223 games over the previous two seasons. It was painful because it appeared to be self-inflicted.Keider Montero Was DominatingFor six innings, Keider Montero gave the Tigers exactly what they needed. The right-hander allowed just two hits, walked nobody, struck out four batters, and needed only 65 pitches to navigate six scoreless innings. At a time when Detroit desperately needed a win, Montero looked completely in control. In fact, Montero admitted after the game that he was surprised when Hinch removed him. When asked if he was surprised by the decision, Montero responded simply:“Yes.”He then added:“I felt really good. It’s his decision.”There was no indication that Montero was dealing with an injury. According to reports after the game, he felt healthy and believed he could have continued pitching.Hinch’s Decision Immediately BackfiredInstead of allowing Montero to begin the seventh inning, Hinch turned to reliever Drew Anderson. The move quickly unraveled. After recording one out, Anderson surrendered a game-tying home run to Colson Montgomery. Moments later, the White Sox strung together three consecutive hits and took a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish. The Tigers offense failed to answer, wasting one of the best pitching performances they’ve received during this miserable stretch.Following the game, Hinch defended the decision.“Drew (Anderson) has been pretty good against lefties, but they put together four straight hits. It’s a tough call because it’s a 1-0 game. You’re trying to win a 1-0 game if we couldn’t put anything together. I thought that was the best way to get there.”The problem is that the results once again told a different story.Fans Are Running Out of PatienceUnder normal circumstances, a questionable pitching change would be forgotten quickly. These are not normal circumstances. The Tigers entered the 2026 season as favorites to win the American League Central and were viewed by many as legitimate contenders to represent the American League in the World Series.Instead, they own the worst record in Major League Baseball.Every loss feels bigger. Every managerial decision receives greater scrutiny. Every mistake gets magnified. That’s why Sunday’s move has generated such a strong reaction from fans. When a struggling team removes a dominant starter after six scoreless innings and watches the bullpen immediately blow the game, criticism is inevitable. Is It Time to Fire A.J. Hinch? The answer is probably no.At least not yet.Hinch didn’t become a bad manager overnight. He remains one of the most respected managers in baseball and helped guide Detroit’s resurgence over the past several seasons. However, Sunday’s decision will only add fuel to the growing frustration surrounding the organization. The bigger issue isn’t one pitching change. The bigger issue is that the Tigers are 22-38, have lost 21 of their last 25 games, and continue finding new ways to lose baseball games.Whether it’s injuries, roster construction, offensive struggles, bullpen collapses, or managerial decisions, the results simply haven’t been good enough. And when a season spirals this badly, nobody escapes scrutiny. Not even A.J. Hinch.

A perfect storm could lead Notre Dame Fighting Irish football coach Marcus Freeman to the NY Jets in 2027
A perfect storm could lead Notre Dame Fighting Irish football coach Marcus Freeman to the NY Jets in 2027 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Notre Dame Fighting Irish football coach Marcus Freeman could be a hot name in the NFL hiring cycle next year. The New York Jets could have a head coaching vacancy, with Aaron Glenn being another bad year away from a premature firing. How realistic is the idea of Freeman in Florham Park, New Jersey, by the time the 2027 season kicks off? League insider Jason La Canfora believes it’s not off the table, since the Jets’ MetLife Stadium co-tenant, the New York Giants, were one of the main teams interested in Freeman."With Jets head coach Aaron Glenn among those considered to be on the hottest of seats, it would not be shocking for [Freeman] to be a prime candidate,” Canfora wrote. "The New York Giants were among the teams to do significant work assessing how interested Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman would be in joining their organization over the winter…"They were hardly alone and were prepared to move on him if he was sufficiently interested, according to league sources, as were other organizations. And there is an expectation in front offices around the NFL that this process will begin anew in November, in an even more robust manner, especially with Freeman yet to send an overt public signal that he isn’t open to giving the NFL a try."Glenn’s defensive identity is under the gun this coming season, having taken over the lead play-calling reins. Glenn was a star running the Detroit Lions’ defense, but not having a single interception all season has distanced anyone’s mind from his success in the Motor City.Meanwhile, Freeman is unfinished business in South Bend after the Fighting Irish were snubbed from the CFP field. Until he finishes that business, there may need to be some pumped brakes on the Freeman-NFL rumors.“Marcus is not going to leave Notre Dame until he wins a national title.”Notre Dame’s on-field reporter during NBC broadcasts, Kathryn Tappen, told me that she doesn’t foresee Freeman leaving the Fighting Irish for the NFL until he wins a national championship.“Marcus is probably getting, I don't know what's going on behind closed doors, but I'm sure there are a lot of teams that were interested and probably wanted to make an offer to him. But he believes in Notre Dame. I love that he stands by this program. I think, quite frankly, Marcus is not going to leave Notre Dame until he wins a national title, and he probably will,” Tappen said.Certainly, things could change. The NFL tends to consider guys already in the league over those with no pro experience. Even national champion head coaches like Urban Meyer and Nick Saban were chewed up and spit out by the NFL.Still, a championship with CJ Carr leading the charge could be Freeman’s major opportunity to make that jump. We’ll see what happens this fall, and if success could lead to Freeman exploring the great beyond.

French Open recap Day 8: Clay line-calling debate overshadows Casper Ruud vs. João Fonseca
Follow The Athletic’s French Open coverageWelcome to the French Open briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories on each day of the tournament. On Day 8, electronic line calling overshadowed a stunning match, two compatriots set up an intriguing match and a favorite began to reckon with pressure. Was Casper Ruud robbed of the second set against João Fonseca? At a hinge moment during two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud’s fourth-round match against João Fonseca, controversy erupted.Ruud, trailing by one set to love, was leading the second-set tiebreak 8-7 when Fonseca laced a forehand down the line. The line judge checking the baseline called the ball in, but a shout from the crowd said out. In the confusion, chair umpire Louise Engzell came down to inspect the mark. She ruled that the ball trace had caught the line. Ruud did not challenge the call, but asked who had made it. On television coverage, an electronic line calling (ELC) replay came to the opposite conclusion.By now, everyone is well aware that the French Open breaks ranks from the three other Grand Slams, as well as ATP and WTA tour events, by relying on humans to call lines. Umpires and players have been getting in time-consuming spats all week: One player showed an umpire two different ball marks during a match. A different player threatened to never speak to an umpire again.Had Roland Garros not made its choice, Ruud would have knotted the match at 1-1. Instead — after a shot of his own was called out and overruled by Engzell as in, with which the ELC concurred — Fonseca took the tiebreak, and a two-set lead. The 19-year-old Brazilian never relinquished it, defeating Ruud 7-5, 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-2 to move into his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. The French Open’s decision means that players, fans and commentators go from understanding in- and out-calls one way — electronic line calling — to another way — ball marks. Worse, those two ways of seeing can contradict each other.Because clay is a live surface, where elements such as wind and uneven amounts of red brick dust on different parts of the court affect how a ball leaves its mark, it’s not uncommon for a ball that lands in to leave a mark that looks out, and vice versa. ELC, which tracks trajectory and contact point, can “see” this and include that information in its final read-out. It also as a 3mm margin for error.A human umpire coming down to check a mark cannot do this, and can only determine whether or not the trace of the ball in anyway overlaps with, or touches the edge of, the line in question. But TV viewers at home see the ELC replay, which contains more information than the trace but is rendered in exactly the same way, encouraging a comparison which doesn’t quite overlap. It was tricky for players to adjust to line calling when clay-court tournaments adapted it, because they’d spent their whole tennis lives using ball marks as the letter of the law. It’s difficult for players to accept that their eyes have been deceiving them for their entire lives, then trust a new system immediately. The same is true of fans, and the apparent injustice toward Ruud caused widespread annoyance. Roland Garros has sewn mistrust in its own tournament.A bizarre moment at Roland Garros 😳A shout from the crowd made it sound like João Fonseca’s shot had been called out.The umpire checked the mark and gave it in, but Hawkeye showed the ball was out. pic.twitter.com/J49TakY2fc— TNT Sports (@tntsports) May 31, 2026 — Ava WallaceWhat will an all-Ukrainian quarterfinal mean to its players? For all of the upsets at Roland Garros, at least one of the quarterfinal matchups in the women’s draw makes complete sense. Elina Svitolina, this year’s winner at the Italian Open, and Marta Kostyuk, this year’s winner at the Madrid Open, will face off for just the third time in their careers. The head-to-head is knotted at 1-1.The match ensures that there will be a Ukrainian semifinalist in the women’s tournament for the first time in the Open Era, which feels fitting for how strong of a presence Ukrainian women have had at this tournament.World No. 55 Yuliia Starodubtseva defeated No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina, of Kazakhstan, in the second round. World No. 65 Oleksandra Oliynykova used her career-best run at a Grand Slam — she lost to the Russian Diana Shnaider in the third round — to advocate for Ukraine. Then there’s Kostyuk and Svitolina. The pair shared a high five in the corridor beneath Court Philippe-Chatrier as No. 15 seed Kostyuk walked to the locker room after upsetting four-time champion Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-1 to open play Sunday.Quarter-finalists check🫸🫷#RolandGarrospic.twitter.com/mUj9NTc63c— Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) May 31, 2026Svitolina, the No. 7 seed, was on her way to beat Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.Beyond their Ukrainian connection, Tuesday’s match will feature between best-performing women on clay this year. Kostyuk arrives with a 16-match win streak, forged by two titles for the 23-year-old: the WTA 250 Rouen Open in France and the WTA 1000, played just below the Grand Slam level, in Madrid.Kostyuk said Sunday that things started clicking on clay for her after she gave herself more space to be creative on the dirt and enjoy her tennis more.“I’m the most consistent I have ever been in my career,” Kostyuk said in her news conference.Svitolina, meantime, has always had a good relationship with the clay — especially in Rome, where she’s won the title three times. But the French Open has been a sore spot: it’s the only major where she has never made the semifinals.— Ava WallaceHow will Alexander Zverev respond to opportunity and pressure?Amid all the chaos, the world No. 2 and men’s tournament favorite Alexander Zverev continues to progress serenely. On Sunday, he eased past the lucky loser Jesper de Jong 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 16 minutes. Compared to the marathons many of his colleagues have been enduring, it was more like a weekend stroll.Zverev is about to embark on possibly the biggest week of his professional career. He has played three Grand Slam finals, losing all three, but this is the first major where he has been the tournament favorite — a status afforded to him thanks to the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, and the early exits of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. With opportunity comes pressure. It’s one thing to reach a final as a big underdog; it’s another thing entirely to have the chance to walk through an open door, the kind which may not open again while Zverev is still in his prime. The 29-year-old German is aware of his shortcomings, and has been pushing himself to play with more aggressiveness in tight and tough moments. He wins a great deal of matches by using his destructive serve and then doing just enough on return, but also loses them by becoming a backboard against opponents who are willing to try and sink a three-pointer when it really matters.Against de Jong, there were encouraging signs that Zverev won’t retreat into his shell as the thing he wants more than anything else comes into sharper focus. He ripped groundstrokes, attacked the net with conviction, and played a few well-timed drop shots.Far bigger tests than the world No. 106 await though, starting with a quarterfinal Tuesday against the rising Spanish star Rafael Jódar.Zverev knows there will be constant questions about whether he is feeling the pressure, and in his news conference after beating de Jong, he tried to downplay the idea that his mind is wandering to what could await on Sunday.“Look, I’m here, I’m feeling confident with my game. I feel like I’m handling the situations quite well, and I will do everything possible to continue doing that,” Zverev said in his post-match news conference.— Charlie EccleshareOther notable results on Day 8:Rafael Jódar (27), the 19-year-old Spaniard, came back from two sets down for the first time in his career to defeat Pablo Carreño Busta 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.Sorana Cîrstea (18) advanced to the third Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career, 17 years after her first. The 36-year-old Romanian defeated Wang Xiyu (Q) of China 6-3, 7-6(4).Mirra Andreeva (8) of Russia eased past Switzerland’s Jill Teichmann 6-3, 6-2 to reach her third French Open quarterfinal.Jakub Menšík (26) of the Czech Republic survived a comeback from Russia’s Andrey Rublev (11) to win 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 and move into his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.Shot of the daySofia Bielinska of Ukraine and Duda Gomes of Brazil may be names for the future. In the Roland Garros girls’ singles, they delivered an underarm serve and a stunning reply — on match point:Drop Shots🧠 How Kostyuk used her darkest moments to rediscover her patience with her tennis and herself.🧱 Świątek is not back, because the tennis she wants never left her. Can she find it?👴 Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are both out of the French Open, but their tennis descendants are making waves.Up next: Fourth round continues🎾 Men’s singles: Flavio Cobolli (10) vs. Zachary Svajda5 a.m. ET on MaxThe ruthlessness with which Cobolli dispatched Learner Tien, the American No. 18 seed, to reach the fourth round suggests that he is in the mood to take advantage of the opportunity in front of him. The 24-year-old Italian meets another American, 23-year-old Svajda, who beat clay-court expert Francisco Cerúndolo in the previous round despite having played fewer than 10 tour matches on the surface.🎾 Women’s singles: Maja Chwalinská (Q) vs. Diane Parry8 a.m. ET on MaxTwo of the most unexpected names in the fourth round of this French Open collide. Chwalinská, the 24-year-old Pole, has been weaving opponents into webs with her heavy topspin forehands and sneak attacks on the net, while 23-year-old Frenchwoman Parry has been using her skidding slice to drive her opponents to distraction. A fascinating clash of styles for two players who had nothing to lose and suddenly have everything to gain.🎾 Men’s singles: Frances Tiafoe (19) vs. Matteo Arnaldi1 p.m. ET on TNT, HBO MaxTiafoe came from two sets down to beat Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria in the previous round, helped by an exchange of views at the net in which he told Faria to “stop acting like you’re tough.” This match against Italy’s Arnaldi is likely to be very tough indeed, with both men coming off five-set matches and having to manage serious opportunity in their comparatively gentle half of the draw.🎾 Women’s singles: Aryna Sabalenka (1) vs. Naomi Osaka (16)2:15 p.m. ET on TNTThe first women’s night session match since 2023 is all star power. Sabalenka and Osaka have eight Grand Slam titles between them, they have both been world No. 1, and they are two of the biggest stars in the sport. Osaka has been serving at an elite level all week, and she will need that again to really trouble Sabalenka.French Open women’s draw 2026 First Round Second Round Third Round Fourth Round Quarterfinals Semifinals Finals🇧🇾1A. Concord, Goshen advance to sectional finals
GOSHEN — The arm and the bat of Goshen senior Bray Hoag and the daring dashing of Concord senior Jordan Flores helped spark the RedHawks and Minutemen into Monday’s Goshen Sectional baseball championship with crisply executed wins Saturday.Hoag fired a no-hitter and backed his own cause with a run-scoring double and two-run single as the Hawks blanked Elkhart 7-0 in the second semifinal. That came after Flores — with the help of an error — scored all the way from first base on Mark Herman’s beauty of a bunt as Concord grabbed a 3-2, eight-inning, walk-off win over Northridge. Both the Minutemen (18-8) and Goshen (21-6) played errorless ball, while their opponents each committed three miscues, those differences proving pivotal.Monday’s 6 p.m. final between Concord (18-8) and the defending champion Hawks (21-6) will be the third meeting of the clubs this spring. Goshen won the previous two, 4-0 and 9-3.The Lions closed 12-16 and the Raiders 12-15.CONCORD 3, NORTHRIDGE 2Fleet-footed Flores led off the bottom of the eighth by reaching on a grounder to third that was officially ruled an error, though his speed clearly caused the defender to rush the throw. Then Herman — who earlier in the game had popped out on a sacrifice attempt — dropped a sweet slice of redemption down the third base line, beating the third baseman’s toss for a single.Flores, seeing that third was left vacated on the play, never hesitated while rounding second on the play. The first baseman’s throw back to his still retreating third baseman sailed wide, allowing Flores to score.“I was waving him (to come to third),” Concord coach Greg Hughes said of Flores, “but he had already seen it. We talk about that in practice. When we draw that guy in, if no one’s (covering), you just keep going, and he did it perfectly.”The Minutemen prevailed in the lone extra inning after both starting pitchers, Concord senior Myles Jones and Raider junior Preston Ryan, had mostly stifled the opposition through the seven frames that each worked.Jones was one out from a 2-1 win before Northridge’s Lucas Eash lined a game-tying single to left-center driving in the tying run.“That was just a fantastic at-bat,” Raider coach Chad Gerard said. “We haven’t had a lot of hits like that in clutch situations, but Lucas really came through there.”So did Ryan all day, on the mound and at the plate, despite his team’s loss. Both runs off the righty were unearned thanks to a fifth-inning error. He allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out six. As a batter, he singled to set up the game’s first run and drew a pair of walks.“Preston was outstanding,” Gerard said. “He threw strikes all day, kept hitters in check. It’s a shame to pitch that well and not get a win.”Jones yielded two runs, working around five hits, four walks and a hit batsman to strand eight runners, before sophomore Drake Weatherholt earned the win with a scoreless eighth despite hitting the first batter he faced.A sacrifice attempt by the next hitter was pounced on quickly by Minutemen third baseman Derek Gomez, who fired to second to nail the lead runner. Northridge then opted for a second straight sacrifice and executed that one, but at the expense of the second out, before Weatherholt got the third on a routine fly.“Aggressive baserunning was the key for us today,” said Hughes, whose club went 4-for-4 on stolen bases and saw its two-run fifth inning assisted by a throwing error that came when Bryce Outlaw assertively broke from second to third on a grounder to shortstop, drawing a throw.“It’s not a bad decision, it’s a bad throw,” Gerard said of the one-out play, “and that’s OK, because if the throw’s there, the guy’s out.”Outlaw proceeded to score on the play for a 1-1 tie, then after the second out, Flores singled in the go-ahead run.GOSHEN 7, ELKHART 0Hoag, getting stronger as the game went longer, looked like he could’ve continued indefinitely, but he happily settled for continuing the Hawks’ season. He capped his masterpiece with several electric seventh-inning breaking balls while striking out the side. He retired the final 10 hitters in all, after a somewhat uneven beginning in which he walked three batters and hit another over the first 3.2 innings.“He needs to start throwing about 60 bullpen pitches before the game, so he’s ready to go,” Goshen’s JJ DuBois joked of Hoag after earning his 100th career coaching win.Hoag’s no-hitter was his second of the season, the other coming April 23 at Mishawaka.“I didn’t really seriously start thinking about it until like the fifth inning when we were batting and going into the sixth,” Hoag said about the possibility of this one. “I was like, if I get past these three hitters, three stronger hitters (in the 1-2-3 spots), the next three should be easier.”The righty struck out eight and closed at 103 pitches.“My curve was working really well,” Hoag said, “and I noticed in the first inning the umpire had a really open zone, so I was just trying not to throw anything near the (middle), just keep everything outside.”At the plate, Hoag added an RBI double in the second inning to score Bryson Wilson, who had also doubled, for a 2-0 lead, then delivered a two-run single up the middle in the fifth to cap a five-run outburst that made the score 7-0.It was way more support than Hoag needed on the mound, some of that support aided by the Lions.Five of the Hawks’ seven runs were unearned. Besides its three errors, Elkhart gave up four walks, three hit batsmen and a run-scoring balk.“They scored seven runs, and six of those were on base from an error, hit by pitch or walk,” Lions coach Scott Rost said. “You can’t win baseball games like that.”Elkhart entered the day on a season-high five-game winning streak.“We did get a little better toward the end of the season,” Rost said, “but obviously, we weren’t good enough today. Goshen’s a very good, very well-coached team, but our Achilles’ heel the whole year was free bases, and with the exception of a couple guys, our approach at the plate today was really bad.”------------GOSHEN SECTIONALCONCORD 3, NORTHRIDGE 2(8 innings)Northridge;100;000;10;—;2;5;3Concord;000;020;01;—3;4;0Preston Ryan, Mason Zimmerman (8; L, 3-4); Myles Jones, Drake Weatherholt (8; W, 4-1).Northridge: Hits — Colt Bollinger 2.Concord: Hits — Rennye Davila 2.Records: Concord 18-8, Northridge 12-15.GOSHEN 7, ELKHART 0Elkhart;000;000;0;—;0;0;3Goshen;110;050;x;—7;5;0Max Shreiner (L, 2-3), Trevor Hilliard (5); Bray Hoag (W, 5-2; 8 strikeouts).Goshen: Hits — Bryson Wilson 2, Hoag 2. 2B — Wilson, Hoag. BREAKING: Badgers land top remaining LB target
Wisconsin Badgers linebacker Mason Posa (8) is seen during the first half of the game against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday October 11, 2025 at Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin. | Jovanny Hernandez / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Wisconsin Badgers double-dipped with commitments on Sunday, landing three-star linebacker Nathan Jones after nabbing four-star wide receiver Jai Jones earlier in the day.Nathan Jones, also a native of Arizona, played at Desert Edge this year, and saw his recruitment really take a step forward this spring. He landed offers from Baylor, Florida State, and UNC after schools like Arizona and Kansas State offered back in January. The Badgers only formally offered Jones in May, but they made significant steam in his recruitment, being the only school to get an official visit from the three-star linebacker.Well, after his official visit this weekend, Jones decided to pull the trigger and make his commitment to the Badgers, giving them 15 commits in the 2027 class. He becomes the second linebacker in the class, joining three-star linebacker Keaton Wollan, who recently committed to Wisconsin and was in attendance this weekend as well.Jones had been crystal-balled to the Badgers for the past two weeks, as it became clear Wisconsin was his top contender. Heading into the weekend, there were six uncommitted targets coming to campus, and the Badgers had been crystal balled for three of those targets.Jai Jones, who committed earlier in the day, wasn’t a part of that group, while Nathan Jones was. Now, let’s see if Wisconsin can close on some of the remaining prospects in that group to cap off a very eventful weekend in Madison.

To Live and Lose in L.A.: Dodgers 9, Phillies 1
Pablo May 31, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy (13) slides past Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto (10) for a run in the second inning at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: William Liang-Imagn Images | William Liang-Imagn Images Call it what you like: Dodger Stadium, Chavez Ravine, Uniqlo Field at Dodger Stadium if you’re a pedant or obligated by branding contracts. It’s a special place. I visited for the first time earlier this month to catch an installment of the age-old showdown between the Dodgers and their former citymates in black and orange, and soon found myself overwhelmed. The history of the place— the almost-tangible presence of the many greats who called the ballpark home, the almost-audible echoes of the crowds roaring at yet-another championship as Vin Scully voices their joy in his immortal tones—knocked me flat, left me dizzy. There was no doubt about it: the sheer presence that fills Dodger Stadium had sent me into delirium.Actually, I was just dehydrated. One popsicle and two rapidly-chugged bottles of water later, and I was feeling normal. Still impressed by the stadium, sure: it’s genuinely great. But perhaps not quite so magical as woozy eyes might make it look. The Phillies, unfortunately, were left as woozy as I was, not by Dodger Stadium magic or dehydration, but by Yoshinobu Yamamoto and some unforced errors. The start of the game was an exercise in frustration for the Phillies. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper both struck out looking on pitches that were initially ruled balls and became strike three upon being challenged by Dodger backstop Dalton Rushing. Sandwiched in between was a groundout from Trea Turner. It didn’t get much cheerier when Shohei Ohtani hit a single that soared just over the outstretched glove of Bryson Stott. And it didn’t get any nicer for Phillies fans when Andy Pages skied a ball to deep center. But Justin Crawford, taking the mood of the Phillie faithful into his capable hands, dashed, leapt, caught the ball, and slammed into the wall. His cap flew off, his sunglasses were knocked askew, and the ball remained securely in his glove. After that, the Phillies got to engage in the age-old game of turnabout as J.T. Realmuto turned a Freddie Freeman walk into a backwards K via a challenge. The inning wrapped up without a run. Brandon Marsh walked to open up the second, then got tossed out at second when he jumped before Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched. The Dodgers had better results with their baserunner in the second, as Max Muncy singled and was plated by a double to center from Alex Freeland. Andrew Painter recovered nicely, with a strikeout of Ohtani to end the inning. The Phillies continued to get some bad luck as the Dodgers got the better bounces. In the top third, Realmuto was hit by a pitch, which would later see him pulled from the game. In the bottom third, Freeman singled, advanced to second on a Mookie Betts groundout, then scored when Kyle Tucker hit a weak grounder that bounced awkwardly off of first base, over Harper’s glove, and into right. But luck, like the wheels of the Dodger Stadium Express, eventually turns(it does not, however, turn for the people who eschew said bus in the hopes that parking near the stadium will work out. They’re doomed). In the top of the fourth, Turner hit a bloop single that fell perfectly between a trio of descending Dodgers. Alec Bohm singled too, but it came to naught. And it turned out the luck hadn’t changed so much after all: in the bottom fourth, Ryan Ward saw a slider from Painter that was about as spicy as the garlic fries they serve at Dodger Stadium— which is to say, not very. He sent it skyward, where it found the Phillies bullpen for what was his first career homer. It’s a lovely thing to see a milestone like that, unless it’s from the other team, in which case it’s just frustrating. That’s just a momentary frustration, though. The injury to Realmuto, who was pulled prior to the start of the bottom fourth, might be a longer one. Hopefully not. Rafael Marchán replaced him. Then Freeland saw a splitter that he rather liked, and sent a roundtripper to a similar spot as Ward did. The Tinseltowners took a 4-0 lead, Tanner Banks came into replace Painter, and the Phillies desperately hoped for a narrative change. For a moment, it looked like they got one. Márchan singled in the top fifth, and Crawford doubled to center-right, with the ball landing just past the reach of a sliding Pages. But neither could be brought home, and the Phillies wrapped up their portion of the fifth with a run column as empty as my wallet after I purchased the $80 Ohtani-endorsed skincare for sale at the Dodgers team store.Note: this is a joke. Not the part where the Dodgers sell that, which they do, or the part where they charge $80 for it, which they do. I did briefly consider actually buying it to turn into some sort of bit for this recap, but while I truly appreciate you, dear TGP reader, I still couldn’t bring myself to do it.Just like I couldn’t buy that skincare, the Phillies couldn’t buy a break. In the bottom fifth Betts walked, Tucker doubled, and both scored when pinch-hitter Alex Call hit a fly ball that dropped perfectly between the onrushing Phillies. Yamamoto walked Harper, struck out Marsh, and then finished his day (4 hits, 0 runs, 10 K). Will Klein was the choice from the bullpen, and, despite being more hittable than Yamamoto, soon thwarted the Phillies. They put two aboard, but neither came home, in part because a Bryson Stott bloop found a sliding Pages’ glove, with the latter turning the page from his earlier failed catch. Pages then rubbed it in by hitting a popup that Stott couldn’t quite chase down, the ball bouncing away and becoming a triple. Pages promptly scored on a sacrifice fly. As the Phillies entered the bottom of the seventh, they replaced Turner with Edmundo Sosa, and Harper with Garrett Stubbs. Muncy homered. That gave the Dodgers their eighth run. In the bottom eighth, Nolan Hoffman loaded the bases (walk, single, walk), with none out. The damage was limited, with the Dodgers plating only one more. The bottom ninth saw the Phillies finally score, via Stott solo shot. There was to be no grand comeback, but the moment was appreciated. The Phillies are 30-29. They return to action Tuesday at 6:40 for a series against the Padres.

Rain delays the start of NASCAR's Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway
LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) — Rain disrupted the NASCAR's Cup Series for a second straight week, this time at the Nashville Superspeedway. The start of the Cracker Barrel 400 on Sunday night was delayed by a weather hold for rain over the 1.33-mile, D-shaped oval that is NASCAR's largest concrete track. Rain shortened the Coca-Cola 600 won by Daniel Suarez last week at Charlotte Motor Speedway. And rain already washed out qualifying Saturday at Nashville with a storm that had track officials asking fans to leave the grandstands for cover. The rulebook gave Denny Hamlin, second in the points race, his second pole this year looking to add to his 61 career Cup wins. Ryan Blaney won here a year ago for his first victory of 2025. Currently third in the points race, he is looking not just to repeat as champ at Nashville but notch his second victory this year. Up next The series will be at Michigan International Speedway next week. ___AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

The Dodgers were the first to strike on Sunday in the bottom of the second as Alex Freeland lined a two-out, RBI double to make it a 1-0 lead. Yamamoto was working on a no-hitter briefly until he allowed a bloop single from Trea Turner to begin the top of the fourth. The Phillies had two men on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Yamamoto managed to work around the traffic both times.Yamamoto was not able to throw a quality start for the first time since allowing five earned runs against the San Francisco Giants on May 12, but he struck out a season-high 10 hitters while tossing his first scoreless outing all season and his first since his final regular season start last year against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Alex Call came in to pinch hit for Ward with the left-hander Tanner Banks on the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning, and he answered the call with a two-run single to give the Dodgers a six run lead. After Andy Pages reached on a bloop triple to shallow right field in the bottom of the sixth, every single Dodger in the starting lineup reached base at least once on Sunday. A sacrifice fly from Freddie Freeman extended the Dodger lead to seven.Max Muncy joined in on the offensive barrage with a monster solo home run against Chase Shugart in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it an 8-0 lead. It was Muncy’s 14th home run on the year— reclaiming the team lead— and it was his 129th home run hit at Dodger Stadium, placing him just one home run behind Eric Karros for the most by a Dodger at home.Max sends one halfway up the Pavilion! pic.twitter.com/EC7850Xg4s— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) May 31, 2026Freddie Freeman’s second sacrifice fly of the game to give the Dodgers their final run. Platner’s wife calls reports about Senate candidate’s sexually explicit texts with women ‘shameful’

Bukaty)2026-05-31T15:15:11Z Graham Platner’s wife called reports that her husband had previously exchanged sexually explicit text messages with several women “shameful” over the weekend, the latest controversy to hit the Maine Democrat’s whirlwind Senate campaign.Platner, an oyster farmer and combat veteran, posted a video taken by his wife, Amy Gertner, who reportedly told his campaign of the text messages last year. In the five-minute video, Gertner avoided speaking directly about her husband’s reported texts, dubbing the broader coverage as “gossip” and saying that “being married is hard.”“I find it really shameful that there’s a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip,” she said in the informal, selfie-style video where she walked along a road. “No marriage is perfect, and I don’t want a perfect marriage. I want my marriage.” Platner is seeking the Democratic nomination for one of the most closely watched Senate races as Democrats hope to defeat longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the party’s efforts to win control of the narrowly divided Senate. The Maine primary is June 9. Genevieve McDonald, a then-campaign staffer for Platner, told the The Associated Press that the candidate was “sexting multiple women while married” and that “the campaign tried to asses that as an election vulnerability.” The texts were first reported by The Wall Street Journal, which wrote that Gertner had told the campaign in August about the messages, which she had discovered on his phone last year, to make sure they weren’t a liability to the campaign. Platner’s campaign team reportedly decided that the texts were private and being handled by the couple, who were married in 2023. The two are in counseling, Gertner has said. Read More Platner’s campaign on Sunday did not specifically confirm the text messages to the AP, but issued a statement from Gertner saying the disclosure of the conversations she had with a campaign aide was a betrayal that “deeply hurt.”“I trusted this person with the most private chapter of our lives — the early days of our marriage before any campaign was on our mind,” she wrote. It’s not Platner’s first controversyPlatner, who has never held public office, has a gruff, less buttoned-up approach on the campaign trail, fashioned a platform around economic equality and has already had to navigate statements that surfaced from his past. The candidate had a tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol, which he said he didn’t realize until he was several weeks into the campaign. There’s also been much attention on his former Reddit posts, which were dismissive of military sexual assaults and used homophobic slurs, for which he has apologized.Platner’s campaign weathered those earlier revelations in what had been considered one of the most competitive Democratic primaries before Gov. Janet Mills dropped out of the race in late April due to a lack of campaign funds. Mills, a two-term governor, had been seen as one of the Democrats’ top 2026 recruits when she entered the Senate race before her campaign fizzled out. Platner has still pulled support from big-name Democrats, including Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Ruben Gallego as well as U.S. House Rep. Ro Khanna. The latter is scheduled to rally with Platner on Friday, and so far, it appears he hasn’t lost any endorsements with this latest texting revelation. Two Democratic senators on Sunday declined to directly address the topic when pressed by reporters. Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that Platner had served his country and community, but “also made mistakes and he has admitted that.” On CNN’s “State of the Union,” New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim sidestepped, too. “With any campaign in the country, the character and the transparency about the different candidates is going to come out,” said Kim, “and the voters are going to decide what they ultimately think.”Barreling forward Sunday, Platner posted a video on X from an event “happening now” where he entered a room to a standing ovation from ecstatic supporters. Questions over whether additional controversial information about Platner could still surface have added to some Democrats’ anxiety over his chances in a general election against Collins, who has represented Maine in the Senate since 1997. In October, after the revelation that he once had a Totenkopf tattoo on his chest and promptly had it covered, the AP asked him if other scandals were on the horizon.Platner said he was expecting his opponents were “going to keep dragging things up.”“They’re going to keep making things up,” he said. “I fully expect people to just lie about me at this point.”Voters are familiar with the couple’s struggles, including with infertility and traveling out of the country to afford IVF treatment, which they’ve discussed on the campaign trail. In late April, Platner shared that Gertner had suffered a miscarriage, and he’s discussed his own mental health struggles and the role of his family and therapist in helping. Former aide explains why she went publicMcDonald initially worked on Platner’s campaign as his political director and resigned a few months later when his now-deleted Reddit posts began surfacing, saying she couldn’t stand behind him as a candidate. She later declined a severance offer from the campaign in exchange for signing a non-disclosure agreement. On Saturday, McDonald wrote on Facebook that Platner’s campaign had “demanded” she retract her statements she had made to The Wall Street Journal or his team would accuse her of violating the couple’s trust. McDonald wasn’t named in the newspaper’s article, but after that exchange, she said she made the choice to be publicly named in a New York Times story.“His consultants greatly overestimate how much I do not aspire to be them,” she wrote on Facebook. After resigning from Platner’s campaign, McDonald moved to help Democrat Jordan Wood’s congressional campaign in Maine’s second district. McDonald submitted her resignation from Wood’s campaign Saturday morning, according to Wood’s campaign.Wood endorsed Platner after Mills dropped out.___Bedayn reported from Austin, Texas and Kruesi reported from Providence, Rhode Island. RCB's new era, Virat Kohli's old magic: Defending champions outclass Gujarat Titans in IPL final
TimesofIndia.com in Ahmedabad: Virat Kohli has never known how to hide his emotions. He wears them proudly, on his sleeve and often on his face. On Sunday night, under the lights of a packed Narendra Modi Stadium, there was not a single moment when he was not completely invested in the occasion.Even before the first ball was bowled, Kohli's intensity was impossible to miss. As Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) players gathered in a huddle, Kohli dropped to his knees, surrounded by teammates, delivering an animated pep talk in his trademark style. Every gesture carried purpose. Every word carried belief. From that moment onwards, he looked like a man possessed. He celebrated every Gujarat Titans (GT) wicket as if it were the winning moment. Every dot ball drew a roar. Every breakthrough brought clenched fists and unfiltered passion. And with more than 90,000 spectators chanting "Kohli, Kohli" in unison, the man who has built his career on rising to the grandest stages once again embraced the spotlight.Chasing a modest target of 156 in the IPL final, RCB raced out of the blocks before losing a few quick wickets. It was the sort of moment that has haunted the franchise in the past. It was also the sort of moment that could have reopened old scars for Kohli, who has experienced more than his share of heartbreak in IPL finals. This time, however, he was not prepared to let the story slip away.— IPL (@IPL) Calm amid the chaos, Kohli paced the chase with the assurance of a man who had lived every possible cricketing script. The greatest chase-master the game has seen took control, steering RCB towards a second successive IPL title with a commanding, unbeaten 75-run innings. It was fitting that the winning six also came from Kohli's willow.RCB defeated GT by five wickets. Such was the domination of RCB that there were 20 balls left to bowl when they won the match. Rajat Patidar also became only the third captain to have won back-to-back IPL titles after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.Earlier, RCB's pace battery produced a clinical bowling performance to restrict GT to 155 for 8.After opting to bowl, Rajat Patidar's side executed their plans perfectly, relentlessly hitting hard lengths and denying the hosts any momentum. Shubman Gill (10) and Sai Sudharsan (12) showed early spark but fell in quick succession to Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar respectively.Nishant Sindhu's promotion to No. 3 failed to pay off as Rasikh Salam Dar removed him for 20, while Jos Buttler never looked comfortable during his 23-ball 19 and Krunal Pandya outfoxed him with all his experience.RCB's grip never loosened. Hazlewood trapped Arshad Khan with another short-ball ploy, while Rasikh finished as the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 27. Bhuvneshwar and Hazlewood claimed two wickets each.Washington Sundar's unbeaten 50 off 37 balls gave GT something to defend, but 155 for 8 looked well below par against a formidable RCB side chasing a second successive IPL title. For years, RCB were often defined by Kohli. They possessed cricket's biggest superstar but struggled to build an identity that matched his relentless standards. Seasons began with hope and expectation before fading away when it mattered most. Even after Kohli stepped down as captain, the pattern largely remained unchanged.Everything changed in 2025.RCB took a bold call by handing the captaincy to Rajat Patidar and ended an 18-year wait for the IPL trophy. Sometimes a title transforms a team. Sometimes it unlocks a belief that cannot be taught. Sometimes, it takes a title for a team to unlock the beast inside it. That is exactly what seems to have happened with this Rajat Patidar-led RCB side.Barring the defeat in Guwahati, where Vaibhav Suryavanshi produced a breathtaking masterclass, RCB have looked virtually unstoppable this season. They attacked with the bat, hunted in a pack with the ball and carried an aura that few teams could match.Without a shred of doubt, they have been the most complete side in the competition. Every base appears covered. Every player understands his role. And fittingly, they now play with the same aggression, conviction and fearlessness that have defined the franchise's greatest ever cricketer.Virat Kohli may no longer be RCB's captain, but his spirit runs through this team. On the biggest night of the season, it was impossible not to see it.Brief Scores: GT: 155/8: (Washington Sundar 50*, Nishant Sindhu 20, Rasikh Salam 3/27) lose to RCB: 161/5 in 18 overs (Virat Kohli 75*, Venkatesh Iyer 32, Rashid Khan 2/25).
