The Silvertips won the Western Hockey League to reach the Memorial Cup for the first time.Kitchener won all four games in Kelowna, also beating Everett 6-2 in round-robin play. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGeorgia baseball wins Athens Regional, star player faces suspensionThe Georgia Bulldogs won the Athens Regional with a 6-2 win over the Liberty Flames at Foley Field. Georgia went 3-0 in the regional with two wins over Liberty and one win over Long Island. Next up, No. 3 national seed Georgia will host the winner of the Starkville Regional in the super regionals. In Georgia's regional-clinching win over Liberty, the Bulldogs fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. Georgia's bats were quiet to start the game and Georgia's offense did not score until the bottom of the sixth inning when a Tre Phelps home run scored two. Georgia pitcher Caden Aoki threw six innings and allowed just one earned run. He struck out 11 batters and allowed only one walk. Aoki moved to 9-1 with the win. Liberty's starting pitcher Cooper Harrington held the Georgia line up in check for 6 1/3 innings, but things unraveled for the Flames' bullpen, which allowed four earned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Georgia reliever Zach Brown allowed only one hit over three innings in a strong performance. Overall, Georgia's pitching staff performed really well in the Athens Regional. The Bulldogs surrendered two runs or less in all three games of the regional. The Georgia offense produced well as usual with UGA posting 30 runs in three games. Georgia's regional was not completely smooth. Georgia infielder Tre Phelps was ejected for having words with the Liberty dugout and manager Wes Johnson was also ejected in the aftermath for defending Phelps. The Bulldogs will be without Phelps for the opening game of the Athens Super Regional. In a postgame press conference, Johnson clarified that Phelps was celebrating with his family above the Liberty dugout. Johnson will not be suspended for Game 1 of the super regionals. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMShedeur Sanders negotiated $9.24 million of $17.7m NFLPA royalty payment while with Colorado Buffs footballShedeur Sanders negotiated $9.24 million of $17.7m NFLPA royalty payment while with Colorado Buffs football originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders recently cashed in on a $17.7 million royalty check from the NFL Players Association for his rookie season in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns. As Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio relayed, a large portion of that payment was negotiated while he was still a member of the Buffs, and before he slipped from being a projected first-round pick to an eventual fifth-round draft slide in 2025. Mainly, on trading card NIL. In addition, Florio foresees another big payment after Sanders recently switched his jersey number to the No. 2 he wore in Boulder as he broke several CU records under center.“Most player royalty through the NFLPA come from group licensing deals, which compensate players for jersey sales, trading cards, video games, and other collectibles. As one source suggested, the $9.24 million payment to Sanders in May 2025 may have reflected his individual trading-card guarantee — something that likely would have been negotiated before he slipped from round one to round five in the 2025 draft,” Florio wrote.“Sanders could have a large payment in next year’s LM-2, too. In March, Sanders changed his number from 12 to 2; any jerseys that fueled his royalty payments for his first NFL season will need to be replaced.”With that one $9.24 million payment alone, Sanders nearly broke Tom Brady’s previous single-season payout ($9.5 million).Shedeur Sanders will keep himself relevant beyond the BrownsShedeur was done no favors in his ongoing quest to outcompete Deshaun Watson as the Browns’ QB1 when his younger brother Shilo started verbally attacking insider Mary Kay Cabot for claiming Watson should win the job.Luckily for Shedeur, his monetary value means he’ll get extra chances most former fifth-round picks usually don’t receive in the future. Sanders’ legendary, record-breaking career in Colorado will also extend his window beyond any potential Cleveland release. It’s staggering to see a player who was a QB4 for most of his first preseason become the highest-paid player via his player marketing. Sanders has built something bigger than anyone could’ve ever imagined.Especially because he was not exactly Rookie of the Year material last season.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeBron James on why he doesn't drink coffeeMany people grab a cup of coffee or some other drink with caffeine to start their day. But there are a few people who never drink coffee or any other caffeinated beverage for various reasons.LeBron James has been lauded for having a high level of dedication to keeping his mind and body right, and it is a huge reason why he's still a superstar-level player at age 41. But he doesn't drink coffee, and during a recent appearance on "Bob Does Sports," he explained that one incident caused him to abstain from coffee.“No, when I was in Miami playing for the Heat we had one early game start.” James said. “I think it was like 12 noon start and I got a [expletive] horrible night of sleep. So I woke up the next morning, I was like super tired. I told my chef, I was like, ‘Hey, I need something like coffee. Just give me the most basic coffee that you could give me, I need a little bolt of energy.’“So I drank it, got to the arena and my heart and my anxiety was racing. Like racing, all the way up until it got to the point where I told my trainer I was like, ‘I may have to sit this game out cause I’m not calming down.’ All the way up until like 15 minutes before the game started. The heart was racing, everything was just speeding up and I was like, ‘Oh no, coffee’s not for me.’ That’s the end of it. I haven’t had coffee since. I think that was 2012 maybe.”Caffeine may not be tolerable for a few people. Perhaps James is one of those people who doesn't necessarily need caffeine, and his body of work since the incident he revealed is proof. This season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists a game during the regular season this year, and during the playoffs, with Luka Doncic injured, he put up 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game. He's about to become a free agent, and he faces a big decision as far as which team he will play for next season. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: LeBron James on why he doesn't drink coffee0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSprinklers interrupt UCLA vs Texas Tech WCWS game as stadium plays 'Umbrella'No. 8 seed UCLA and No. 11 seed Texas Tech were engaged in a high-stakes elimination game in the Women's College World Series when the teams got an unexpected reprieve. As Texas Tech pitcher Kaitlyn Terry face her first batter of the inning, the sprinkler system at Devon Park in Oklahoma City turned on in the right field, forcing a brief pause to the action. In a moment of levity, the person operating the music in the stadium started playing Rihanna's "Umbrella" as the grounds crew turned the water off.REQUIRED READING: Texas Tech vs UCLA softball live score, updates: Latest from WCWS elimination gameSprinkler delay in OKC 😂 pic.twitter.com/y5D356dLmC— ESPN (@espn) June 1, 2026The delay was short-lived, with play resuming just minutes later (as Terry was allowed to get some more warm-up pitches in). In fairness, the game went to extra innings only after Jordan Woolery launched a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game into extra innings. This isn't the first time there have been some unforeseen difficulties at Devon Park, either. Partway through Texas and Texas Tech's winners' bracket game on May 30, the ABC broadcast went out and only returned after some time with "limited coverage."Who knows what next hijinks might ensue as the WCWS aims to crown a national champion. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Sprinklers interrupt UCLA vs Texas Tech WCWS elimination game0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMO'Sullivan breaks down Florida's Gainesville Regional loss to TroyFlorida's playoff run has reached the do-or-die moment. After Sunday's 16-11 loss extended the Gainesville Regional, head coach Kevin O'Sullivan acknowledged that pitching struggles have put the Gators' backs against the wall. A difficult weekend on the mound, with the Gators struggling to get length from their starters and consistency from the bullpen, has led to an uneasiness heading into Monday's regional final, but the team has no choice but to be ready and lay it all on the line.O'Sullivan expressed confidence that his team will be ready while emphasizing the need for one or two guys to step up on the mound. The offense's continued production puts Florida in a position to win at home, but it's been an odd weekend at Condron Family Ballpark to say the least. Here's what Sully said after Sunday's loss.On managing the bullpen in games like this"Yeah, explaining that to the guys at the end, like, trying to manage the bullpen today was extremely difficult. Because it felt like, obviously, we were chasing runs the entire game, and it felt like if we got within two, then we would turn around and give up another run and fall behind by three. Then we'd get within two again, and then we would fall behind by three or four."You're trying to manage the game, and if we could have just kept it close, we would have probably went after five innings to Caden or something like that. But then you start falling behind by too much, and then obviously the sixth inning was pretty much a disaster."So it kind of got away from us, obviously, but bottom line is we got a chance to win a regional tomorrow. We did this in 2017, had to come back on Monday and play. We've got a chance to win a regional, bottom line."Today's obviously disappointing. We haven't pitched well this regional. Our bullpen pretty much fell apart on Friday. We only got three innings out of Aidan or so last night, and then obviously the start today wasn't what Liam wanted. So we're just going to have to pitch better if we're going to want to move on."On message to the pitching staff"I think we're at a point this season that I don't know what else to do. There's nothing else to say. I mean, we've been throwing the ball really well. It's just for whatever reason this weekend we have not been ourselves, and tomorrow, hopefully, we will be."On plan for tomorrow/projected starter"No, not yet. We'll have to look at it and talk about it, but we're going to have to be really strategic in how we use our arms. We're probably going to have to use quite a few."On confidence in pitchers available on Monday"Well, I feel good, but I wish we had Barbs, honestly, but we had to obviously use him last night because we only got three innings out of Aidan. We gave up a lead, and we had a significant lead. So the bottom line is we're just going to have to have a bunch of guys go out there and give us two innings, and then the next somebody goes out there and hand the ball to Josh at the end."On offensive strength"We're swinging the bats really well, as well as we have all year long. Hindsight is 20-20, but if you knew you were going to score 11, maybe you'd go to Caden in the fifth inning or six, but it's hard to predict that. But, we'll have enough to be competitive tomorrow and have a chance to win. I do know that."If we keep scoring runs like we have them, we just need a couple of guys to step up. Just like that sixth inning, like somebody's got to step up. Hit-by-pitch, the bases loaded, walk the guy in, give up consecutive hit after hit after hit, with the bases loaded. We just couldn't do much. It's just kind of like an avalanche, just one mistake after another in one inning."On Liam Peterson's start"They were on his stuff. There weren't a whole lot of swings and misses, honestly. So, I know he's disappointed. I know he was looking forward to his start, but hopefully we win tomorrow, and he'll have another opportunity next weekend."On home run surge at Condron Ballpark"It seems like every fly ball, you kind of hold your breath, and we don't have a small ballpark. It's obviously 380 in the gaps and 330 down the lines and 400 in the center, so it's not like we have a small ballpark. So, yeah, it's kind of head-scratching a little bit, honestly."On team's mental readiness for the regional final"They'll have no choice. I mean, you win, you move on. You don't, your season's over. We played a tough schedule. We've been through our ups and downs, and, yeah, I most definitely think they'll be ready to play. I mean, what else do you have to lose? I mean, the alternative is your season's over, right?'You go out there and give it your best effort and have as much energy as you possibly can, and when your name's called out of the pen, you do your job and keep swinging the bats the way we're swinging it and keep playing the defense that we're playing and let the rest play out for itself."Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Gators Wire: Florida baseball HC Kevin O'Sullivan quotes after loss to Troy0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBills' DJ Moore admits early issue with BuffaloBills' DJ Moore admits early issue with Buffalo originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. There's still plenty of time for DJ Moore to get acclimated to the Buffalo Bills. In the early going after the trade from the Chicago Bears, though, things aren't perfect.Moore admitted there are "growing pains" in learning the Buffalo system.“It’s going good,” Moore told the Buffalo News. “I mean, it’s gonna be perfect later on, but right now it’s still growing pains.”MORE: Jason Kelce says the NFL is ruining its most valuable assetHis optimism is encouraging, and there's no reason to doubt him. When Moore switched teams from the Carolina Panthers to the Chicago Bears, he became one of the league's most effective receivers in that first season in the Windy City.Moore is older now, but he's going to be relied upon as the Bills' WR1, and so he'll have to keep working to figure things out and maximize his role. The Bills gave up a second-round pick to get Moore, which was viewed by many as a steep price. The reality is Buffalo felt it had to do it. The wide receiver group wasn't good enough for Josh Allen in 2025.Khalil Shakir remains a reliable slot receiver, but Keon Coleman and Joshua Palmer were both letdowns on the outside. The Bills drafted UConn's Skyler Bell in the middle rounds, and he has potential, but the only guy on the roster who has been an NFL No. 1 WR is Moore. That's what he'll have to be.Growing pains come with things that are a work in progress. The hope for Buffalo will be that by the time Week 1 rolls around, Moore is fully formed in Joe Brady's offense. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMUSA vs. Senegal, 2026 World Cup Warmup: Community player ratingsATLANTA, GEORGIA - MARCH 28: Tim Ream #13 of the United States talks with teammate Cristian Roldan #4 as they arrive at the stadium prior to playing Belgium during an international friendly at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on March 28, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by John Dorton/ISI Photos/USSF/Getty Images) | Getty Images The USMNT started their World Cup preparations in ideal fashion on Sunday afternoon, jumping out to a 2-0 lead twenty minutes into the game. Christian Pulisic, broke out of his well publicized 2026 slump (he had not scored for club or country this calendar year) after assisting the first goal when he scored himself 15 minutes later. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, there were a few surprises in the starting lineup, with presumed starters Weston McKennie, Folarin Balogun, and (perhaps most surprisingly) Matt Freese not included in the starting lineup. In addition Chris Richards was not available either as he had not traveled with the team due to an injury he had picked up with Crystal Palace a few weeks ago. The play of the starters was sharp though and Ricardo Pepi, starting in place of presumed starter Folarin Balogun, was involved in the buildup to both goals. Sergino Dest, who was playing pretty far forward this afternoon, slotted home the USMNT’s first goal of the match after Pulisic unselfishly slid a ball across the six. Then in the 20th a quick counter led to Pulisic rounding the keeper and slotting home from a tight angle. Unfortunately, Sadio Mane would pick up a goal for Senegal just before the half to pull Senegal back within one. Then, after a nearly full line change for the US at halftime, with substitutes for 10 of 11 positions, including the goalkeeper (Sebastian Berhalter was the only starter to stay on) Mane would score a second goal for Senegal seven minutes in to the second half to pull them level. The US was able to pull back on top thanks to a Folarin Balogun goal in the 63rd minute for the final score of 3-2. There were certainly some encouraging performances from the US though it can be challenging to evaluate a man of the match with in a 45’ minute appearance. What do you think? Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The NBA Finals are set between the Western Conference's San Antonio Spurs and the Eastern Conference's New York Knicks. It is expected to be a blockbuster matchup, especially since a lot of people have seen the intense games in the regular season and the NBA Cup Final. It will be a tough test for the Knicks as they will be playing against the most dominant defender in the league, Victor Wembanyama. The Knicks seem to be in good spirits as Josh Hart is welcoming the challenge of playing against the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year.Josh Hart relishes the opportunity to play against Victor Wembanyama's defenseWhen the Spurs are discussed, it is hard to overlook the 7'5" giant playing center. He is the most dominant player in the league today, as he can score at will, and he defends the paint like only he can. He is an intimidating force in the paint, and it has led to teams fully avoiding the paint. As the Spurs' NBA Finals opponents, the Knicks seem ready to play against Wembanyama. They are not backing down from the challenge, but they also know that it is an honor to be playing against such a special talent on the biggest stage possible.MORE: How the New York Knicks built their NBA Finals rosterHart knows that he will be one of the players who will have to attack the rim and Wembanyama. Even on switches, he will probably be matched up against Wemby often, just like Oklahoma City Thunder stopper Alex Caruso had to endure during the Western Conference Finals. Hart knows that playing on both ends against Wembanyama will be quite exciting."The only unanimous Defensive Player of the Year is guarding me. That's a good sign for me, right? It means I'm a pretty good basketball player. I go into the game and play the game the way the game needs me to play," Hart said about matching up against Wembanyama.Hart is one of the most underrated players who will be quite impactful in this series. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMUFC champ Islam Makhachev hints at August returnIslam Makhachev’s upcoming fight announcement is seemingly overdue. Makhachev (28-1) recently attended PSG’s Champions League victory match against Arsenal in Budapest, Hungary. Makhachev revealed that he would be going into fight camp immediately after, eyeing a return in August. Makhachev also acknowledged Ian Garry (17-1) as the frontrunner for the next welterweight title shot against him. While Makhachev also mentioned that there are other contenders, the Dagestani star doesn’t plan on parting with his belt. “Right after here I’m going to camp,” Makhachev told UFC on TNT Sports. “[Return likely in] August. I will be ready. Lot of contenders but No. 1 is Ian Garry. We still have couple of more [contenders] who want to take the belt but I don’t give no one.” A Variety of Contenders Garry has contenders like Carlos Prates and Michael Morales in the race with him. However, Prates recently said that Garry would fight Makhachev in August. The UFC has yet to officially announce the fight. However, Makhachev’s latest comments seem to confirm Prates’ claims. Makhachev defended his lightweight title four times, the most in the history of the division, before moving up to welterweight. Makhachev dominantly defeated Jack Della Maddalena to win the welterweight title at UFC 322 this past November. Meanwhile, Garry has 10 UFC wins while suffering his lone professional loss against fellow contender Shavkat Rakhmonov, who is now recovering from an injury. “The Future” has rebounded from that loss with wins over Prates and Belal Muhammad. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBen Shelton bounced from French Open in second-round stunnerBen Shelton fell in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, against Raphael Collingnon in the second round of the French Open (Roland-Garros) on Thursday. It's the latest in a series of upset losses for Shelton this year, who has gone 2-5 in Majors and Grand Slams since a quarterfinal appearance in the Australian Open in January. Hopes were high for the former Gator, who has won a pair of 500-point tournaments this year, including the BMW Open on clay in April.Collignon broke Shelton at the perfect moment in the opening set, relying on his cross-court backhand. Shelton tried the up-close approach in the second set, searching for forehands at the net. Collignon answered accordingly, playing the return with great precision. A couple of mistakes led to a late break, putting Shelton in a 2-0 hole.By the third set, Shelton was visibly frustrated and wasn't moving with the same focus he usually does. Collignon didn't back down and wrapped up the biggest win of his career. It took just two hours, and Shelton never reached break point."Been a brutal couple of months for me to say the least," Shelton captioned his latest Instagram post. "But like I’ve said before, the failure only fuels me and I got a lot to be grateful for. (He also coached the 2007 LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers, who happened to lose to Brown's former team the Spurs.) Brown has also been a part of four NBA championships as an assistant — 2003 with Spurs, and 2017, 2018 and 2022 as the associate head coach of the Golden State Warriors. The Knicks through the years have also boasted brief stints on the court by former Lobos Luc Longley and JR Giddens. Phil Abney and Toby Roybal, the only player in UNM men's basketball to have his number retired, are both former Lobos drafted by the Knicks, though neither ever played for them. For you Spurs fans, while there isn't a current tie on the court to the state, there are some on the bench and in the past worth noting.Tim Martin, who played basketball in high school in Rio Rancho and at New Mexico Junior College before an ankle injury ended his playing days, became a basketball trainer and has spent this season as a Spurs assistant coach for player development.Among the players he trained before they got to the NBA? Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama.Samson Kayode, who spent two seasons (2010-11, 2011-12) as the video coordinator for the NM State under former coach Marvin Menzies, is in his sixth season with Spurs. Kayode worked his way up through the scouting department, and this past year earn the title of associate vice president of scouting. And then there's UNM all-time leading scorer Charles "Spider" Smith, who was drafted by the Miami Heat in the first round in 1997, but played 60 games and made 22 starts for the Spurs in the 2001-02 season — while both Brown and Borrego were on staff.New Mexico Junior College gets to lay claim to some significant ties, too, in having been home to Avery Johnson's freshman season of college (1984) before later being a Spurs mainstay. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFSU baseball overcomes late deficit, scores three runs in 10th to advance to Tallahassee Regional finalThey don’t ask how; they ask whether you did or didn’t.Florida State baseball took the hard way on Sunday night, but the Seminoles survived and defeated Northern Illinois 7-4 in 10 innings to advance to the regional final tomorrow against St. John’s.FSU trailed 4-3 after seven innings and seemed to be falling apart, with three errors in the field and multiple mistakes on the base paths. But this team never gives up, and Florida State found a way to push the game to extras before opening the game up in the tenth. As the offense peaked and valleyed, the Nole bullpen, as it has been for most of the season, allowed their team to stay in the game. Although Cooper Whited only went 3 1/3 IP, Chris Knier and Brodie Purcell combined for 6.2 innings, 12 strikeouts, and only one unearned run, to give Florida State a chance. Both righty relievers posted career highs in strikeouts and threw their most pitches of the season as they left it all on the field and helped carry the Seminoles into the regional final. The two sides traded blows to start Sunday night’s game. Florida State took an early lead on an RBI double by Brody DeLamielleure, who traded places with John Stuetzer, who had begun the inning with a double of his own. However, in the bottom half, NIU pushed out in front 2-1, as an error by Gabe Fraser and a two-run homer put the Huskies ahead.Florida State responded right back in its next turn at the plate. Ben Barrett roped a single up the middle and went first to third courtesy of a base knock from Fraser. In the ensuing at-bat, Carter McCulley’s swinging bunt allowed Barrett to score, and with two outs, Stuetzer’s second hit of the day brought in Fraser, as the Noles went back in front, 3-2. Whited settled the game down for Link Jarrett’s side on the mound with a scoreless second and third, but it came at a cost. The lefty fired 63 pitches through three innings, with only three strikeouts and no walks, as Northern Illinois turned every at-bat into a battle. Momentum went away from Florida State in the fourth. With Fraser on first and McCulley at the plate, the second baseman swung at ball four while Fraser was in motion, resulting in a strike-’em-out-throw-‘em-out to end the inning. In the first at-bat in the Huskie half of the fourth, Gavin Baldwin drove his second home run of the day out to right field, tying the game at three. After Whited recorded the first out of the inning, he walked a batter, and Jarrett decided to make a move, inserting Chris Knier. The Seminoles certainly would have preferred more than 3 1/3 IP from Whited, but he struggled to miss bats and record easy, quick outs. It seemed like things were about to go from bad to worse for FSU as Dowd lost a lazy fly ball in the lights that dropped in for a single, but the center fielder made up for it as he made a diving grab and fired the ball into the infield quickly to double off the runner and extinguish the threat. After a quiet fifth, the Noles had a chance to reclaim the lead in the sixth. Barrett doubled with two outs, and Fraser was hit by a pitch, but McCulley took an obvious strike three that left the runners on, a common trend for this FSU team. Florida State squandered another opportunity in the seventh as a hit-and-run backfired for the second occasion, this time, it was Stuetzer getting doubled off after Dowd popped out on a high pitch that could have been ball four. At the worst possible time, the Seminole offense began to revert to its worst version.Just as the offensive mistakes started to stack up, FSU’s defense began to let them down as well. What seemed like a routine double play in the seventh ended with both runners safe when Fraser’s throw to second pulled McCulley off the bag. In the ensuing at-bat, Knier mishandled a bunt, allowing the NIU catcher to reach first to load the bases with nobody out. Even though the Seminoles seemed on the cusp of getting out of the jam as Barrett snagged a line drive and doubled off the runner at first, Knier started to run out of steam. The righty hit the second batter he faced before walking in a run, as Florida State fell behind 4-3 with only six outs left in its season. Although poor defense is a feature, not a bug, of this team, so too is their fight, and the Noles did not go down easy. In the eighth, Hunter Carns walked, and Nathan Cmeyla lined a double into the left-center gap, scoring Carns all the way from first as part of a hit-and-run to tie the game at four. Purcell stayed in for the bottom of the eighth and punched out the side. He found trouble in the ninth as the winning run reached second, but the former USC transfer struck out NIU’s lead-off hitter to send the game to extra innings. The bullpen did its job today, as Knier and Purcell looked like their best selves.Brayden Dowd began extra innings with a walk, and Brody DeLamielleure singled, allowing Dowd to go first to third and put runners on the corners with nobody out. In the ensuing plate appearance, Hunter Carns drove in Dowd to give FSU a 5-4 lead. However, the Noles were not done. With two outs and a runner on first, Ben Barrett smashed a two-run home run to the opposite field, extending the FSU advantage to 7-4 and putting the game out of reach. The offense scuffled for long stretches during the battle against NIU, including going scoreless from the third to the seventh, but five extra-base hits, such as Barrett’s bomb, gave Florida State enough punch when they made it count.High, Deep, Goodbye!!📺 ESPN+ pic.twitter.com/Etx2mUd97R— FSU Baseball (@FSUBaseball) June 1, 2026As for tomorrow’s schedule, Florida State will have to win two games in a doubleheader, starting with an afternoon contest, to advance from its own regional. It will certainly be a challenge with multiple arms spent, including all three tonight, but this group always seems to pull a rabbit out of the hat when they need it most.2026 Tallahassee Regional: ScheduleMonday, June 1Game 6: No. 4 St. John’s vs. No. 1 Florida StateTime: TBDChannel: TBAGame 7: No. 1 Florida State vs. No. 4 St. John’s (if necessary)Time: TBAChannel: TBA0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDetroit Tigers Reveal When/Where Justin Verlander Will Make 1st Rehab StartThe Detroit Tigers are one step closer to getting a future Hall of Famer back on the mound.According to reports, Justin Verlander is scheduled to make his first rehab start on Tuesday, June 2, with Triple-A Toledo as he continues his recovery from left hip inflammation. The start will mark Verlander’s first appearance in a competitive game since March 30, when he surrendered five runs in 3.2 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.Prior to being cleared for a rehab assignment, the 43-year-old right-hander completed two simulated games as part of his buildup process. The Tigers have been cautiously managing his recovery, but the decision to send him to Toledo is a significant sign that his return to Detroit could be approaching.Verlander’s 2026 season was cut short almost as soon as it began. After making just one regular-season start, he was sidelined with hip inflammation and has spent the past two months working his way back. Now, the focus shifts to how he looks against live competition. The Tigers have desperately needed positive news during what has been a difficult stretch. Detroit enters the new week with the worst record in the American League, making Verlander’s eventual return even more important for a pitching staff that has recently lost both Casey Mize and Kenley Jansen to the injured list. While it remains unclear how many rehab starts Verlander will require before rejoining the Tigers, Tuesday’s outing with Toledo represents the next major milestone in his recovery. If all goes well, Detroit could soon welcome back one of the most accomplished pitchers in franchise history.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAncelotti revels in thrashing of Panama: “A huge confidence boost”Ancelotti revels in thrashing of Panama: “A huge confidence boost”Coach Carlo Ancelotti described the 6-2 rout of Panama as a “tremendous injection of confidence” on the eve of the trip to the United States for the World Cup. More than 72,000 people filled the Maracanã on a night that marked the final meeting between the Brazilian fans and the national team, which departs this Monday (1st) for New Jersey.“(...) It was a beautiful night, we have to thank the fans, the atmosphere they created, it was a tremendous injection of confidence. I know perfectly well that we started well, with a good attitude and commitment. The work started well in these days, but the work is not only commitment and attitude, it is about being strong, resilient, every day, whether in good or bad moments, in order to finish well,” he said at a press conference.Carlo Ancelotti during the 6-2 rout of Panama at the MaracanãCredits: Rafael Ribeiro/CBFThe friendly went into halftime with Brazil leading 2-1, thanks to goals from Vinicius Jr. and Casemiro. In the second half, with virtually the entire team changed — only Léo Pereira stayed on the field for the full 90 minutes — the Seleção took off and made it 6-2.For Ancelotti, the match showed the competitiveness within the squad made up of the 26 players called up for the World Cup and also the need to improve in certain moments of the game, especially in the first half.“The performance in the second half was important for the team, for the players who came on, who showed quality, showed that they can compete with everyone on the list. But we have to keep in mind that the opponent dropped the pace, had less intensity and offered more opportunity to show quality. The first half had good things and things to improve,” he concluded. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTerry delivers in circle and at the plate to lift Texas Tech into semis at WCWS, 8-7 over UCLAOKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kaitlyn Terry allowed two runs in five innings and drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, leading the way for Texas Tech in an 8-7 victory over UCLA on Sunday at the Women's College World Series.Terry and NiJaree Canady alternated pitching duties seven times for the Red Raiders, but it was Terry who was the star of the game against her former teammates. Her double in the ninth inning scored Taylor Pannell to make it 7-6 and she scored an insurance run on an error later in the inning.UCLA rallied in the bottom of the ninth when Jordan Woolery, who earlier hit two home runs, drove in Rylee Slimp with a one-out single. Canady came back in to pitch and ended the game on a flyout and a strikeout.Terry, who transferred to Texas Tech from UCLA after last season's World Series, struck out seven in her five innings. Canady (27-6) was credited with the win because she finished the eighth inning.Eleventh-seeded Texas Tech (59-8) advances to the national semifinals against Alabama on Monday. The Red Raiders will need two wins to advance to the championship series for the second consecutive season.UCLA trailed 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning but leadoff batter Ramsey Suarez ripped a pinch-hit home run off Terry to make it a two-run game. With two outs, Woolery, who finished with three hits and five RBIs, sent an 0-1 pitch from Canady deep to center field for a game-tying home run.UCLA's Taylor Tinsley (33-8), who pitched every inning in the Bruins' three games, allowed eight runs, seven earned and threw 181 pitches.UCLA's record-setting season came to an end after scoring 672 runs and hitting 209 home runs. The eighth-seeded Bruins (53-10) also set records for most total bases and most RBIs.The matchup was the first between two teams with more than 600 runs in a season. The game was delayed for a few minutes before the bottom of the eighth when the automatic sprinklers came on in right field.___AP college sports: https://apnews.com/hub/college-sports0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMichigan coach Kyle Whittingham takes wild IndyCar rideHe may be 66 years old, but Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham has long been known as something of a fun-loving head coach, even during his time at Utah. The motorcycle riding, skiing, golf, and tennis enthusiast shies away from few recreational activities, but something says that what he did on Sunday may have taken the cake.Sunday marked the Detroit Grand Prix, an IndyCar race that's come back to the city in recent years, with a circuit around downtown Detroit. Whittingham had the honor of riding in the 'fastest seat in sports,' getting a quick tour in a second seat in an actual race car going around the circuit. And from the video released by Fox, he loved every second of it.Go Blue! @UMichFootball's Kyle Whittingham is going FAST before the Detroit Grand Prix.@CFBonFOX | @INDYCARpic.twitter.com/QodBQz3tN1— INDYCAR on FOX (@IndyCarOnFOX) May 31, 2026Not everything was sunshine and rainbows, however (though it was awfully sunny in southeast Michigan on Sunday). Third-place finisher in the Detroit Grand Prix, Graham Rahal, is apparently an avid Ohio State fan and made sure that the new Wolverines headman knew where he stood."I told coach when he was at Utah, I was a massive fan. And obviously, he's an understudy of Coach Meyer, who I know very well," Rahal told WWJ 950. "And so that's an interesting dynamic, for sure. But yeah, I mean, not a ton. I just wanted to tell him that I can't like him anymore. But I was a fan of his work out of Utah. I thought he did an amazing job with that university. And I have no doubt that he will here, too, which hurts a little bit. But it's always good to, frankly, good to see the Big Ten doing as well as the last few years as well."All in all, Sunday marked a day that Whittingham is unlikely to forget anytime soon, full of high octane thrills as well as rivalry drama. So, in a way, it was a microcosm of what it's like to be the head coach of the University of Michigan football team. This article originally appeared on Wolverines Wire: Michigan football Kyle Whittingham IndyCar fastest seat in sports ride video0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘Region of death’: UNC’s Paulsen, Rose reflect on super regional runNorth Carolina first baseman Erik Paulsen, who was named the Chapel Hill Regional Most Outstanding Player Erik Paulsen and relief pitcher Jackson Rose spoke to the media after the Tar Heels’ 9-3 win over East Carolina on Sunday, which advanced them to the super regional. It is the third straight year UNC has advanced to the super regional and hosted it. The Tar Heels will face the winner of No. 12 seed Texas A&M and USC from the College Station Regional. Here’s what they both said below..Erik PaulsenOn going 3-0 in a tough regional…“We knew it was the region of death for everyone else. We knew we were going to go out there and play our game of baseball, and when we play our best, nobody can beat us.” (Jackson Rose: “He’s right.”)On his emotional day …”It really hit me after I hit the double in the bottom of the eighth, and then went back out there in the top of the ninth, just looking around Boshamer Stadium, seeing how packed it was, and wishing my dad was in the stands. It was definitely emotional, and while I was taking all that, a pop-up got hit to me. But it was great, my mom up in the stands and she’s the strongest woman I know. I was really happy to see her smile and I can’t wait to see her when I get out of here.”Jackson RoseOn what his plan was for the game coming out of the bullpen…“I didn’t know what the plan was. I just went out there and pitched every pitch I could, and got out of every inning I could. And if they were going to let me go back out there, I was going to do everything I could to make us win.”On learning from the veterans on the team…“Being around the older guys and seeing how good of men they are to me, it kind of just helps going in here every day, being around them that much easier, and makes me that much better of a person. On friendship with Caden Glauber…“(Having Caden Glauber around) it’s sweet. Me and Caden are buddies. We come to the games together, and we’re living together right now in the dorm, and we’re always hanging out, we’re always close. We were here alone in the summer, and we were always a little nervous about getting here, and then we got here and it all just came together. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCommit! Alabama Football lands 2027 4-star running back, Nigel NewkirkThe Crimson Tide players and coaches work during practice Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024. Alabama running backs coach Robert Gillespie talks to Alabama offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan as they watch an offensive drill. Alabama just landed a big pickup for next year with the commitment of Nigel Newkirk. Alabama football has its first commitment from the first big weekend of official visits.Nigel Newkirk has committed to the Crimson Tide, he told Rivals on Sunday. The four-star running back picked Alabama over LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and more. The four-star running back from Gainesville (Ga.) entered his official visit to Alabama with plans to make a decision later this summer. Instead, the No. 89 prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking left Tuscaloosa knowing exactly where he wanted to play his college football.Newkirk committed to Alabama over the weekend and has officially shut down his recruitment. The decision did not come as a surprise to those closest to his recruitment. Alabama had occupied a spot at or near the top of his list for a long time.“They’ve always been in front,” Newkirk said. “Alabama has always been up there. They have always shown love, they have always made me feel wanted, and my visits there were always great.“I have been there around 10 times, and I have strong relationships with the coaches, and I am very comfortable there. It just feels like a family. It’s easy to adapt. Tuscaloosa is a great place for me.”Alabama’s 2027 class is still small (as usual this time of year), but June is when things usually start ramping up, and Newkirk is the first guy to really kick things off. And he’s already shutting down his recruitment, so that’s likely a good sign. Interestingly, Rivals has him as the 6th best running back and #89 overall player in the country, while ESPN and 247 both have him rated as a 3-star. You have to wonder if the other services will wind up closing the distance, or if Rivals will continue to be the outlier viewing him as one of the elite? And hey, the schools fighting for his commitment were Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, and Michigan. So the guy had the best in college football all being very high on him. Here’s a little analysis and stats from 247:COMMITMENT: Gainesville (Ga.) RB Nigel Newkirk picks Alabama over LSU & others, set to join 2 former teammatesSCOUTING REPORT VIA 247SPORTS NATIONAL SCOUTING ANALYST GABE BROOKSImpressive build with the look of a P4 RBGets north-south as quickly as possibleRuns hard and gains extra yardage through contact at the second levelNot an elusive move stringer, but capable of one-cut evasiveness to extend runsEncouraging track data that includes a 11.05 100-meter time as a sophomoreSees plays develop and knows how to effectively use patience or urgencySomewhat of a one-speed runner who can enhance gear-mixing nuanceLimited pass-catching opportunitiesProjects to the P4 level as a possible high-major back who could become a quality starter and/or valuable piece of a multi-faceted backfield rotationNewkirk turned in an extremely productive junior season with the Red Elephants before suffering a season-ending injury in the playoffs last fall. The dynamic running backs racked up 184 carries for 1,496 yards (8.1 per rush) and 19 touchdowns, while tallying 12 receptions for 128 yards and one touchdown across 14 games played. Newkirk racked up nine games with 100 or more yards, while also adding seven performances with at least two touchdowns (two games with three scores).Newkirk is the first RB of Alabama’s 2027 class, and with the Tide likely going to pull in a small class this season, he may be the only one. He’s a 0ne-cut-and-go player with excellent burst, breakaway speed, and the ability to shed early arm tackles. Add in some pretty impressive receiving chops, and the coaching staff likely views him as a guy that can be an every-down player in the future. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMassive scare for Gujarat Titans: Players evacuated after team bus suffers short circuitTimesofIndia.com in Ahmedabad: What began as a disappointing night on the field nearly turned into a far more alarming ordeal for the Gujarat Titans (GT).The night went from bad to worse for the Shubman Gill-led GT when their team bus suffered a short circuit while returning from the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday night, leaving the players stranded on the road for nearly an hour, TimesofIndia.com can confirm. The players and support staff were evacuated immediately, and everyone is safe.GT had already endured a tough evening after suffering a five-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. It has been a gruelling few days for the Titans. Their arrival in Ahmedabad ahead of the final was delayed due to poor weather conditions across north-western India. Heavy rain delayed GT's chartered flight by nearly three hours, and the team eventually reached Ahmedabad late on Saturday. The delay also forced the postponement of the scheduled captains' photoshoot featuring Shubman Gill and Rajat Patidar. The Titans have barely had time to catch their breath over the past five days. On May 26, they lost Qualifier 1 to RCB at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. The following day, they travelled to Chandigarh before taking on Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 at the New PCA International Stadium in Mullanpur on May 29.Despite losing in the final on their home turf, captain Shubman Gill had praise for his team "We couldn’t get over the line, but there are always things that you could improve on. And even if we had won the trophy, there were still things that we felt as a group that we needed to work on," he said at the post-match presentation.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLakers jersey history No. 42/No. 53 — James EdwardsThrough the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary.During the Lakers' 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. In 1977, the Lakers took center James Edwards in the third round of the NBA draft out of the University of Washington. As a rookie, he averaged 15.2 points and 7.4 rebounds a game, but the Lakers traded him after he had appeared in 25 games with them. In those 25 contests, he averaged 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.Years later, Edwards became known as a significant rotation player on the Detroit Pistons teams that won back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990. He returned to the Lakers in 1992 and spent two more seasons with them while putting up 5.5 points and 1.7 rebounds in 11.2 minutes a game.He retired after winning a third title with the Chicago Bulls in 1996 with career averages of 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in 24.3 minutes a contest. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Lakers jersey history No. 42/No. 53 — James Edwards0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMA Super Feeling: Dawgs Win Athens RegionalMay 31, 2026; Athens, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs players react after defeating the Liberty Flames at Foley Field. Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images | Dale Zanine-Imagn Images Tre Phelps hit the go-ahead homer and was not around to see the end of Sunday night’s regional contest between Georgia and Liberty. Neither was Diamond Dawgs’ head coach Wes Johnson. In the end, Georgia’s determination and a frenzied Foley Field crowd exceeding 3,600 was more than enough to douse the Flames as the Bulldogs won 6-1 to win the Athens Regional and advance to the Super Regionals for the second time in three years. The Bulldogs were stymied early, their first ten batters being set down by Liberty starting pitcher Cooper Harrington after the Flames drew a first-inning run. “For those first six innings, I thought their starter came out, threw the ball well. Kind of kept us off balance. I thought we got off some good swings and were just missing some balls,” Johnson said. “That’ll happen when you see a guy like that who’s kind of unique. He had a lower release height, was really commanding his pitches. He kept us off balance but really proud of our hitters. [I] thought we just kept grinding and didn’t give in and made it hard on them.”That’s when everything changed on multiple fronts at Foley Field. Phelps parked a Harrington pitch over the left field wall in the sixth inning, but the drama was only starting. Phelps was quickly ejected by game umpires who were also apparently auditioning for the fun police, and Georgia head coach Wes Johnson quickly got the same fate. Georgia’s skipper had no regrets. It’s also of note that seated behind the Liberty dugout that Phelps was gesturing toward were…Phelps’ parents. TRE PHELPS GIVES GEORGIA THE LEAD AND THEN GETS TOSSED FOR CELEBRATIONWES JOHNSON TOSSED. WOW. pic.twitter.com/kL36K3AVXS— 11Point7 College Baseball (@11point7) May 31, 2026“As far as the Tre (Phelps) situation, for the record, Tre’s family was sitting up in the stands. Tre was waving at his family. The umpires – whatever, you know I’m not an umpire – they thought he was talking to their dugout,” Johnson said. “Tre got ejected. Tre will miss game one of the super regional. I also was ejected. I have no further penalties. That’s the only statements that we can give and the NCAA will not be making a statement.”As for what exactly Phelps said? That’s a big mystery. Liberty's Bradley LeCroy on the ejection: "He made remarks to our dugout and looked straight in our dugout."When asked what Phelps said: "I'm not sure. I mean, it's 5,000 people — or sorry, 3,633 — yelling at the top of their lungs. I'm not sure, but obviously, it wasn't good."— Olivia Sayer (@OliviaKSayer) June 1, 2026But what is not a mystery is that the Bulldogs got a career night from starting pitcher Caden Aoki, who gave up a hit and struck out a career-high 11 hitters in six innings, getting out of a two-on, one-out jam in the fifth inning. “You have to go out there every inning. It’s like a new game every inning, every pitch. You have to stay locked in,” Aoki said. “You’re at your best pitching when you’re not looking at the score. So, I knew the job I had to do, and I wanted to go out there and execute.”What’s also not a question is that for the second night in a row, Georgia’s bats poured it on late, making it easy for Zach Brown to slam the door with three scoreless innings. The Bulldogs wore down Liberty’s pitchers with four insurance runs in the eighth, and I began with a heavy dose of poetic justice. Michael O-Shaugnessy, who replaced Phelps after his ejection, slashed a solo homer over the scoreboard, and an RBI double by Rylan Lujo and two-run Ryan Wynn single capped off the big offensive inning. Georgia now awaits the winner of the Starkville regional and will most likely host next weekend’s Super Regional. If the opponent is Mississippi State, it’ll be a team Georgia is 4-0 against this season. Go Dawgs!0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNCAA baseball tournament: Auburn eliminates UCF with 6 solo homersTime ran out on UCF baseball's run in the Auburn Regional, three days that often felt like an eternity given the numerous weather-related delays at Plainsman Park.Chase Fralick socked two of Auburn's six home runs, and the host Tigers — the No. 4 national seed — eliminated the Knights with a 9-3 victory on May 31. Storms in the area pushed back first pitch three hours, and there were two separate stoppages, totaling 50 minutes, within the first two innings.Auburn (40-20) advanced to the regional final, where it must defeat fourth-seeded Milwaukee twice for a spot in supers.UCF ended the season with a 32-23 record, highlighted by Andrew Williamson's three-homer game in Friday's win over NC State.DeAmez Ross and Zak Skinner went deep for the Knights in Sunday's contest, and Roman Kimball notched a career-high seven strikeouts in 4⅓ innings. UCF came up one win short of its sixth regional final appearance in school history. It still has never advanced to supers. Here are three takeaways from UCF's baseball finale for the 2026 season.DeAmez Ross spots UCF early 2-0 leadTwo pitches in, DeAmez Ross gave UCF a jolt with a line-drive home run over the right-field wall off Auburn starter Alex Petrovic. Nearly half of the runs Petrovic has allowed this season have come in the first two innings.Ross returned to the dish in the second with the bases loaded, and he legged out an infield single to plate Landon Moran and double the Knights' advantage.UCF could have used a crooked number on the scoreboard. One batter later, John Smith bounced into an inning-ending double play, and Petrovic worked through the next three frames unscathed.Auburn overwhelms UCF pitchers with solo homer barrageAuburn found its power stroke when it got a second look at Kimball.Mason McCraine put the Tigers on the board with a solo shot, and Fralick followed suit two batters later to knot the score. Ethin Bingaman blasted a 420-foot homer to straightaway center, his fourth of the regional, to give Auburn a lead it would not relinquish.UCF reliever Anthony Lariz escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning by allowing just one inherited runner to score via sacrifice fly, but Auburn tagged him for two more bombs in the sixth — one apiece for Cade Belyeu and Taylor Belza — to go up 6-3.Fralick capped off the Tigers' six-homer performance with a 405-foot no-doubter over the UCF bullpen in right field off Matt Sauser.UCF baseball rebounds after disappointing 2025 seasonTwo of UCF's three Big 12 campaigns have ended with trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Knights set a new high mark with 19 conference wins, tying Arizona State for third place in the regular-season standings.UCF won seven of 10 conference series, rebounding from a fairly dismal 2025 season in which it went 9-21 against league opponents.Terry Mohajir, UCF's vice president and director of athletics, saluted the Knights' "strong season" on social media."This team was always competing, despite battling numerous injuries throughout the year and earned its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons under Rich Wallace," Mohajir said. "This group represented UCF the right way all year long, exciting times ahead for UCF Baseball!"What a strong season for @UCF_Baseball!This team was always competing, despite battling numerous injuries throughout the year and earned its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons under Rich Wallace. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Just like last year, the Boston Red Sox face a critical month of June after getting off to a slow start.Last season, the Red Sox ended May four games below .500. June brought major changes as the team called up Roman Anthony and shipped Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. This year, Boston enters June in an even bigger hole, eight games below .500 and last in the AL East. The Red Sox are still searching for consistency, which has eluded them all season. Their longest winning streak has been just three games and they've won back-to-back series only once this year, all the way back in early April.Boston's been terrible at home this year, going 9-19 at Fenway Park. That needs to change in June if the Red Sox want to start building momentum and playing more consistent baseball, especially with 15 of their 27 June games at home, including nine of the first 15.Boston needs to maximize its home-field advantage against some tough opponents. The Red Sox play 16 divisional games in June and face all four of their AL East opponents, including the New York Yankees twice. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNotre Dame should add more Big 12 flavor to its scheduleTEMPE, AZ - NOVEMBER 08: General view of action between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish during the college football game at Sun Devil Stadium on November 8, 2014 in Tempe, Arizona. The Sun Devils defeated the Fighting Irish 55-31. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Notre Dame Football schedule is a thing of beauty — but also an absolute nightmare. I’ve always loved the mix of schools from around the country, but some years it can feel a little stale. I think there’s an easy way to throw a little more flavor onto this meat, and you already know that I love a good barbecue. When Notre Dame first started playing its ACC agreement, I have to admit that I was fairly excited about the schedule changing up a bit. The idea of more games against Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and NC State was cool to me. Notre Dame’s dominance over its ACC opponents (55-12 since 2014) however, has made the schedule a little stale. Despite Notre Dame’s lackluster schedule this season, the Irish slate does improve greatly over the next five years in terms of it being more interesting. Still, I do believe the Irish could (and should) add at least one Big 12 home and home series to its schedule for each season — and mix it up. Obviously, the Irish have BYU there, but there are still a number of games that could be scheduled as home and home matchups that would make things a little more interesting. This move wouldn’t be out of a need for schedule strength or playoff resume (which I guess is the same thing) it would just be to make things, again, more interesting. Yes, I understand that games against Tennessee, Michigan, Oregon, Ole Miss, or whatever mid to top tier Big 10 or SEC team would be an even more interesting matchup — but I’m a realist. I think my proposal is perfectly fine, and puts the Irish in some fun spots. Morgantown, West Virginia.Lubbock, Texas.Boulder, Colorado.Cincinnati, Ohio. Tuscon, Arizona.Just spread it out, and be sure to play the teams in their ACTUAL stadium and not some Shamrock Series crap. All of this offseason talk about the postseason, media rights, and congressional legislation has made a lot of what has made college football fun — not nearly as fun. This doesn’t have to be hard or some kind of crazy scheduling initiative/agreement with the conference itself — just sign up for a home and home with some random places Notre Dame doesn’t normally go to. Part of the perk of being an independent is doing things like this, so it should definitely be something Notre Dame should look into. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAngel City FC falls 2-1 to North Carolina Courage before international breakThe Angel City FC Midfielder Maiara Niehues #12 fights for the ball during an NWSL game against The North Carolina Courage on May 31st, 2026 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California.LOS ANGELES — Angel City FC closed out May with a disappointing 2-1 loss to the North Carolina Courage on Sunday afternoon at BMO Stadium.Playing before a crowd on a sunny 77-degree day in Los Angeles, Angel City entered the match in 10th place in the National Women's Soccer League standings, while North Carolina sat eighth. The first half featured a tightly contested battle between the two clubs. Both teams created chances and shared possession nearly evenly, with Angel City controlling the ball 47 percent of the time compared to North Carolina's 53 percent. Despite the scoreless opening 45 minutes, the energy inside BMO Stadium suggested a breakthrough was only a matter of time. The Courage struck first shortly after halftime when Evelyn Ijeh found the back of the net in the 48th minute to give North Carolina a 1-0 lead.Angel City responded quickly. Just three minutes later, Maiara Niehues headed home the equalizer in the 51st minute, sending the home crowd into celebration and restoring momentum for the hosts. However, North Carolina delivered the decisive blow in the 79th minute when Manaka Matsukubo scored the game-winning goal, handing Angel City its second consecutive defeat. The NWSL now enters its second international break of the season, providing players an opportunity to represent their respective national teams during the upcoming FIFA international window.Six Angel City players have received international call-ups for June.Following Sunday's loss, Angel City captain Sarah Gorden discussed the team's priorities during the break.“First thing is first for everyone to get some rest, to kind of get away and regroup on a personal level, then come back and really refine what we are trying to do,” Gorden said. “We felt like we had so much momentum the first few games of the season and we've kind of lost that. So June will be all about refining, kind of finding ourselves and our system a little bit more, and also just finding that belief again because that's what we need. We always say in this league, when you're getting wins and you have momentum, you've got to ride that wave, and we've got to find our way back to that again.”Defender Gisele Thompson earned her ninth call-up to the U.S. Women's National Team after previously joining the squad during the league's first international break.Defender Evelyn Shores and forward Taylor Suarez were both selected for the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team, which will face Brazil and train alongside the senior national team during the international window.Midfielder Kennedy Fuller, 19, was called up to the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team. Fuller will travel to Spain as part of the team's tournament preparations and will serve as team captain.Forward Claire Emslie received a call-up to the Scotland Women's National Team, marking her return to international competition for the first time since giving birth.Midfielder Ary Borges was selected by Brazil and is set to surpass 50 international appearances for the Brazilian Women's National Team during the upcoming window. While the loss was a frustrating way to enter the break, Angel City hopes the time away will allow the club to regroup, regain its confidence and rediscover the form that fueled its strong start to the season.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Chet Holmgren is well aware that he struggled against the San Antonio Spurs. As an All-NBA player, he has to deal with massive expectations, but he also must be aware of how badly he was playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was a rough seven games for the OKC big man, but his team is not worried about him.Yes, the reactions to Holmgren's passiveness in Game 7 are warranted. An All-NBA player only taking two shots is a bad look, but no one is more aware of his problems than he is. Back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has said he is rooting for Holmgren but is not at all worried.Shai Gilgeous-Alexander believes in Chet Holmgren coming back strongerHolmgren was an All-NBA player this season because he was superb on both ends of the floor. Offensively, he scored 17.1 points per game, while on defense, he was amazing with his blocks and overall defensive presence in the paint.Unfortunately, that did not work against Victor Wembanyama. It was a rough series for Holmgren, and it will be apparent to him that he has to live up to expectations moving forward. He will also have to match up better against Wembanyama, who seemingly has a special motivation when playing against Holmgren.MORE: Mark Daigneault takes accountability for Chet Holmgren's struggles in the Western Conference FinalsAs the team's star and leader, Gilgeous-Alexander was asked about how he could help Holmgren move forward. It seems SGA is not taking a hands-on approach with his teammate because he knows that Holmgren is good enough to realize the points he has to improve on and work on them properly."I haven’t talked to Chet about that. I won’t. I don’t feel like I need to. I didn’t perform my greatest this series either. Chet won’t come to me with a development for the summer, you know? Chet knows how much I care about this game," Gilgeous-Alexander said about Holmgren's approach in the summer."I know how much Chet loves this game and how he wants to be the best version of himself out there. Sometimes, it just doesn't go that way for whatever reason it is... He’s going to be a better player because of his make-up, his talent. I don’t need to umbrella Chet. He’ll figure it out."From an outside perspective, it does look like a healthy approach for SGA to do. He knows Chet's talent, and he knows the big man will be extra motivated to prove his doubters wrong. It will be a long summer for Holmgren and his personal team, but he has to put in the work to prove he deserves that $250 million contract that kicks in during the 2026-27 season.More NBA news:Chet Holmgren is motivated to work on his game in the summer after his WCF strugglesLu Dort wants to commit his future to the Thunder, but that might not happenShai Gilgeous-Alexander is clear about the Thunder's defeat to the SpursDespite the loss, Cason Wallace still believes the Spurs are beatableShai Gilgeous-Alexander wants Sam Presti to keep doing his job in the offseason0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThere is cynicism about the World Sevens — but this is why women’s football needs itWomen’s football will never recover. This will set it back years. This, of course, not being the 50-year ban that actually set women’s football back years, but Everton Women carrying on-loan Manchester United full-back Hannah Blundell out in a suitcase-cum-coffin before their World Sevens semi-final against United on Saturday and resurrecting her. Or Everton giving birth to a football with the faces of the injured players on it 24 hours earlier, not long after Aston Villa’s team danced the can-can and Chelsea’s squad turned themselves into a corporeal skittles board, and the Sky Sports television cameras forgot that they were meant to actually record Leicester City’s goal against London City Lionesses.According to certain pockets of the internet who caught a glimpse of the third iteration of the global seven-a-side tournament, World Sevens, at Brentford’s Gtech Stadium over the weekend, all of that and some of other stuff that occurred over this three-day whimsical jaunt of cartwheeling referees, no offsides and the revelation Manchester United manager Marc Skinner might actually know who Bad Bunny is marks the dead end for women’s football. This was an irredeemable insult to the great pantheon that is Elite Professional Football.World Sevens, co-founded by American entrepreneurs Jennifer Mackesy and Justin Fishkin touched down in west London last Wednesday. Only in its second year of existence, the third iteration of the competition, with its 15-minute halves on a pitch half the size of that of a traditional 11-a-side pitch but still (at least before last week) spiritually in the testing phase of existence, made plenty of noise. As Chelsea lifted the World Sevens trophy, along with half a million U.S. dollars in prize money following their 6-5 win against Manchester United, an overwhelming majority of that noise, on the ground, was positive. Players spoke about how much they had enjoyed it. Staff spoke of a sense of freedom and bonding that they aren’t generally privy to in the more demanding, high-stakes environment of club football. Directors of football and decision-makers spoke of the valuable opportunity to showcase their clubs as more than just women’s versions of their men’s teams, as original entities with personality in an increasingly personality-driven financial and media landscape.Which, of course, got some people really, really angry online. The majority of the criticism aimed at World Sevens zeroed in on its supposed unseriousness. Which, in an age of dedicated set-piece coaches, field tilt and referees with Go Pros on their heads, might as well be a capital offence.Looking beyond the most obvious irony that men’s footballers do plenty of unserious things too, like have dedicated YouTube channels showcasing all of the raw milk they drink and name their dog Win, the bigger irony speaks to the ongoing challenge facing women’s football, specifically that at times it can feel like it cannot win.Because how sustainable is unseriousness? How much money can actually be made by scrapping the offside rule and spending hours crafting dance routines to Sophie Ellis-Bextor? More pertinently, to what extent is it worth selling your soul? Your dignity? Your ability to wear the club’s badge across your heart as you and your teammate are roly-polying into your winger?Women’s football is damned if it attempts to ask for cash hard earned by its men’s senior team, or considers itself a sport on an equal level. But it’s equally damned, apparently, if it attempts to find alternative means of cash that aren’t selling itself to itself or prostrating to a nation-state.The backlash, too, is rooted in a fragility that transcends football, the fear of long-held traditions of being seized, of one’s comfort zone shifting. To be clear, World Sevens never intended to invade any space. While it was initially sold narratively as a potential rival to the Women’s Champions League, organisers have insisted since the start its intention is to augment an already existing space, not displace what’s inside it.And women’s football still needs to be augmented. Leicester City were relegated to the WSL2 this season and face a summer of total financial uncertainty after their men’s senior team dropped into League One, a demotion that will require the club to cut expenditure to revenue to 60 per cent, putting the women’s football programme squarely on the chopping block. But there’s also a perfectly adequate argument to be made that something doesn’t have to be so serious. There’s an unquantifiable value in simply permitting players and staff to have a bit of fun.As with anything, there are existential threats. Will World Sevens be able to make itself an immovable fixture in an increasingly busy international and domestic schedule? When does the risk of serious injury, as happened with West Ham’s Tuva Hansen — who is now confirmed to have suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury — being stretchered off during the group stages, outweigh the value of fun and branding? Or, more bluntly, what happens if/when the money runs out? While the two prior iterations provided prize money pools of $5m (£3.76m) spread among its eight teams, a more humble $1.5m (£1.1m) awaited this time around. Participating clubs earned a guaranteed £70k, admittedly more than what other European clubs make for winning their respective leagues, and enough to cover the costs of entering. But it’s hardly a pot that might turn the dial of a club’s financial situation if it fails to win the thing.Yet, World Sevens have at least made a compelling case after last week that they can move the dial elsewhere. A lasting cliche of women’s football’s value is its accessibility, its clarity of personality, its counterpoint to the sterile, money-soaked product of men’s football. As the game has grown, women’s football has slipped at times closer in line with its male counterparts, with media training and carefully curated behind-the-scenes access. For all the fun and disruption, the commitment to elite sport itself never felt reneged. Some of the goals scored were stunning, and the defensive interventions did not lack intensity. Jess Park crafted poetry. Chelsea’s Aggie Beever-Jones might as well have walked on water. And in the end, it was enjoyable, a simple experience that can feel increasingly elusive these days. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Women's Soccer2026 The Athletic Media Company0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDevin Tovey, 32, realizes a lifelong dream, wins prestigious Salt Lake City Amateur titleDevin Tovey holds up the trophy after winning the Salt Lake City Amateur golf tournament on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Bonneville Golf Course. | Courtesy Randy Dodson, Fairways Media Two years ago, Salt Lake City’s Devin Tovey watched a lifelong dream of winning the Richard C. Kramer Salt Lake City Amateur golf tournament slip away, as teenager Bowen Mauss made a clutch 15-foot birdie on the 17th hole at Bonneville Golf Course and edged Tovey by a stroke to take home the trophy. That’s why winning the 2026 City Am on Sunday night meant so much to the 32-year-old club-fitter at Impact Golf Center in Draper and part-time Bonneville employee.“Oh, man, I can’t even tell you how much this means,” Tovey said. “It is just the monkey off the back.”It didn’t come easily. After Tovey and Kenny Palmer both shot 6-under 138 in the 36-hole event, they began their sudden-death playoff on the easy par-5 1st hole.“Oh, man, I can’t even tell you how much this means. It is just the monkey off the back.”SLC Amateur winner Devin ToveyTovey hit a 9-iron from 164 yards to within 5 feet of the hole, and made the eagle putt. Palmer hit a better drive and had about 150 yards to the hole, but his approach spun back and off the green. His par wasn’t nearly good enough, and Tovey was able to scratch off the No. 1 item on his bucket list.“That has been the entire goal, to win this,” said Tovey, who has been playing at the course near SLC’s Hogle Zoo since he was 5 years old. “All my friends right here, they know how badly I wanted it. To finally do it, it is unreal. It is crazy.”Nikko Taggart made a birdie on the 18th hole to place third at 5-under, while Hayden Howell and Daniel Holmberg tied for fourth at 4-under.Palmer, 40, lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, and spends his summers in Utah, playing out of Glenwild Golf Club. He plays in several USGA and UGA events each year and was second in the Utah Mid-Amateur and Utah Winterchamps this year.“Very frustrating finish today, but excited for what is to come,” he said.Palmer shot 64 on Saturday and entered Sunday with a one-shot lead over Taggart and a four-shot lead over Tovey, who played high school golf at Highland and college golf at Cameron University in Oklahoma.Palmer was cruising Sunday until a double-bogey on the par-4 11th hole gave Tovey and the others some hope. Then on No. 17, the short, downhill par-3, Tovey hit his tee shot over the green and Palmer’s tee shot settled on the green some 20 feet below the pin.Tournament over, right?Hardly.Tovey got up and down for the par, while Palmer 3-putted for a bogey, and there was a tie atop the leaderboard.“I was surprised when he 3-putted, but, I mean, Bonneville’s greens, they get a little bumpy,” Tovey said. “Anything can happen. Once he missed it, I was like, ‘Oh man, now I gotta make mine.’”Both golfers made routine pars on No. 18, and the City Am went to a playoff for the first time since 2021, when Cooper Jones defeated Zack Neff, also with an eagle on the first playoff hole.“I was due. I was due,” Tovey said, holding back tears, in what had to have been one of the most emotion-filled City Am finishes ever. With his PGA teaching professional, Terry Myers, looking on, Tovey took his instructor’s advice and got aggressive on the playoff hole.“We talked a lot about just hitting stuff close,” Tovey said. “You know, a lot of times, just going for it, being aggressive and playing to win. You can’t have any regrets.”Not anymore.Tovey said next up on his bucket list is the Art City Amateur at Springville’s Hobble Creek Golf Course. That 36-hole tournament is next weekend. His best finish there is third place.“Ultimately, the State Am is the big one, but my expectations are not to ever (win it),” he said. “There are so many good players in that field. Obviously, there were good players in this field, too. “That one is a little bit harder to win, but if I can win just the top two-day tournaments here in the state, I would consider that a great golfing career.”Richard C. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhere would Cincinnati Reds be without these offseason moves? For JJ Bleday, it was about getting closer to home (“Midwest, east coast, however you want to say it”), about the talent and manager and about an opportunity to perform, and win, he said. For the Cincinnati Reds, it was about this. Everything the former No. 4 overall draft pick and sweet-swinging lefty hitter has done since getting that chance.“Coming into spring training I felt good, I felt like there was some opportunity here, and when I got optioned out of spring I still felt like I was in a good spot mentally and physically,” said Bleday, who signed a $1.4 million free agent deal over the winter after a frustrating season with the Athletics.“I just kept rolling with what I was doing in spring and took advantage of playing every day down there in Triple-A and worked on my approach and continued to get better," he said. “I was able to get the call and be up here, and it’s just about trying to keep on carrying it through.”Nobody has been better at that for the Reds since the kid from western Pennsylvania earned that call April 25 when Eugenio Suárez was forced to the injured list by an oblique injury — so good that Bleday might put himself into consideration for a first All-Star bid if he keeps it up.Meanwhile, two months into the season, he tops our list of the Reds’ best off-season acquisitions for 2026, a list that so far is missing some of the bigger investments. The top 5:1. OF JJ Bleday, 28, free agent ($1.4 million)Bleday homered in his first game in a Reds uniform and hasn’t looked back. Through Saturday he was hitting .295 with a .395 on-base percentage, nine home runs and 1.024 OPS in just 29 games. As struggling Opening Day regulars such as TJ Friedl and Matt McLain have dropped from the top of the order (and alternately out of the lineup), Bleday has taken on larger roles toward the top and middle of the order for a team that has struggled offensively as a group much of the season. If there was a Reds MVP award for May, he’d own it.2. CF Dane Myers, 30, trade from Marlins (for OF prospect)Myers doesn’t earn the elevated spot on the list as much for the numbers he has produced as the valuable fit he has provided. His exceptional fielding in center made him a late-inning replacement when he wasn’t starting early in the season, a valuable platoon piece with lefty-hitting Friedl and eventually an option for more playing time when Friedl struggled so badly the first two months.Myers also has come up with big hits along the way for a team that hasn’t had a lot of them.3. 1B/DH Nathaniel Lowe, 30, free agent ($1.75 million)The hard-hitting lefty with the Gold Glove and World Series-champion credentials didn’t sign until the first week of spring training, looked like a tough roster fit for a team with three regulars capable of playing first base and then started only two of the Reds’ first 12 games. But as his playing time increased out of need for offensive options, Lowe has become one of the most productive bats on the club. From April 24, when he hit his first home run of the season (actually two), through Saturday, when he hit No. 9, Lowe hit .286 with a 1.011 OPS and 20 of his 25 RBIs, in 27 games.4. RHP Pierce Johnson, 35, free agent ($6.5 million)This one hurts. Literally (just ask Johnson). When the veteran stabilizer in a beat-to-hell bullpen landed on the injured list with elbow inflammation over the weekend he took one of the last reliable relievers still standing for a Reds bullpen that has the second-highest walk rate in the league and has been a team weakness for much of May.Johnson’s IL move came one day after the club lost key leverage reliever Graham Ashcraft for what might be the season with an elbow injury and three weeks after closer Emilio Pagán suffered a long-term hamstring injury.Johnson had a 3.27 ERA in 24 appearances, a respectable walk rate and the coveted trust of the manager to get big outs.LHP Brock Burke, 29, 3-team trade (Gavin Lux to Rays)With all due respect to $15 million slugger Eugenio Suárez, who doesn’t make our list (so far) because of a no-show start to the season, Burke has quietly been the closest thing to a workhorse, if not a rock, in the struggling bullpen, leading the league in appearances along the way.Given the otherwise pen-crushing injuries to key late-inning relievers, the moves to bolster that group over the winter look especially valuable now. Burke has walked too many guys but gotten the job done often enough to have a 3.60 ERA at the one-third mark of the season despite his role in the bullpen’s struggles in May.Wait for it? DH/3B Eugenio Suárez, 34, free agent ($15 million)The highest-paid guy on the team has been a protective presence in the middle of the lineup for Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart when he was healthy. But he’s played barely half the Reds’ games because of an oblique injury and through Saturday had as many strikeouts (38) as hits (25) and walks (13) combined. And just three home runs. The Reds don’t need him to slug at the 49-homer pace he produced last year. But they need a reasonable facsimile of the hitter he’s been throughout his career (.462 slugging percentage) over these final four months. This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: Top 5 offseason moves for Cincinnati Reds, with one big name missing0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 50 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр
